"Before we begin our next segment. We note that we will be discussing sexual abuse the testimony. On capitol hill yesterday was both angry and anguished for usa gymnastics athletes said law enforcement including the fbi ignored them and lied about them when they said they were abused by former team. Doctor and convicted sex offender. Larry nassar simone. Biles was one of the women who testified to be clear. I blame larry nassar and i also blame an entire system that enabled perpetrated his joining us. Now is marissa witkowski hausky. She's an investigative journalist for usa today. Who began covering the abuse scandal years ago at the indianapolis star. It's been six years since usa gymnastics heard the first allegations. And it's been five years since you and other journalists at the indianapolis star began reporting on this listening to yesterday's testimonies. What stood out to you. What lawmakers heard yesterday was the continued frustration of survivors. Who felt that their allegations against larry nassar had not been taken seriously enough. They had been calling for change in calling for accountability for the failures of usa gymnastics of the us olympic and paralympic committee and of the fbi former olympic gymnast michaela maroney in her testimony directly. Blame the fbi for not acting fast enough to stop by larry nassar. Here's her testimony. What is the point of reporting abuse if our own. Fbi agents are going to take it upon themselves to bury that report in a drawer.

He was so flattered because he loved the character he loved the character to you know and it's just a beautiful thing and it's just you know i think all we can say is like anyone just wish wishing love and peace to his family and everyone who loved him and there are a lot of people who loved him absolutely. Perryman was just acquired and kind of a similar player. Ask mcaliskey so. I think he's going to make the team. Obviously more would be on the team and then it comes down to divide diablo. Nick wykowski and jason white. And i mean i'll be honest like that is a tough decision to make and where i'm looking at is i kind of think you know if you cut mcaliskey at least with him. You don't have to risk him getting picked up on waivers like you would with divine diablo jason white which white since they're younger players they'd have to go off waivers and especially with jason white. Who's had a great preseason if you put him or if you cut him another team could easily come in and swoop them up and then the raiders are sol with cook hausky. It's still a risk because you're going to cut the guy and he will be a free agent what you can kind of come to a little under the table or handshake agreement of. Hey we might. We're gonna cut you but that's just so we can put somebody. Maybe like jane wider nicholas moro on injured reserve so that we can give them an injury designation and don't have to risk losing them obviously. There's the risk of moral not being exactly thrilled with that and wanted to go play somewhere else or sites using make more on nick. Witkowski wanted to go somewhere else. But i think that is really an option. That the raiders can explore. You know they did it in two thousand nineteen. I think again with the with josh moro and i think witkowski could be a similar situation where they end up maybe cutting him and then bringing them back or just cutting him completely like i said denzel. Perryman has a similar skill set. You know chelsea's probably a little better than coverage whereas paramount's better run-defender but between littleton and muse and diablo and even morrow those are kind of your coverage linebacker so with the raiders are looking for are maybe that guy in the middle that can be that thumper in the run-defender and perryman has that same skill set and chelsea's been injured for the last two or three weeks. Maybe threes little dramatic. But it's at least been too. Well i think you kinda go with the guy that you just acquired the guy that does have some familiarity. Playing with gus bradley. And i mean. I legitimately think you know quick hausky could be on the chopping block and i mean i think we're due for surprise in in this position group no matter what it's a it's a group full of a lot of guys that are sold good players nobody. That's a real standout and so many injuries just makes this complicated. Because if you put the guy on i are. Now you're gonna end to season or you can have or you're gonna have to have them make the roster and take up a roster spot which could end up screwing you out somebody else so the linebackers going to have a lot of drama and i think we'll be right up to the deadline until the raiders. Make that decision so get the ob on the edge of our seats for a while when it comes to the lb's moving on a safety. And i think this is another position that gets a little complicated with the numbers right. Last year they kept three. I think they'll keep four this year if they do keep three than i think. They'll keep an extra linebacker co calc- will be safe. But i have a feeling. We're gonna go with four and i think dramatic jonathan abram. Those guys are hands down on the roster. And i think tyrod gillespie is gonna make it and i think down eleven is going to make it as well just because of what he's able to bring on special teams which leads me to believe that karl-josef and roderick teamer is going to be The cuts the biggest surprise is coming from there is going to be karl-josef boss obviously and when it comes to karl-josef joseph he's a guy that i've liked a lot guy liked when the raiders drafted him back in. What was it twenty. Sixteen or whatever and you know. He's been when he's been on the field. I think he's been a good player but the problem is i think he's been off more than he's been on it and even this year is dealt with a lot more injuries and dealt with injuries and training camp already and again i keep saying keep harping on it. We all know how much patience. Jon gruden has for injuries. And i think that's ultimately it cost them as well as not being able to play special teams. Special teams aren't supported. As i'm thinking or maybe kirie glaspie is gonna get going to be the special teams contributor from this group that may be karl-josef gets the nod over dow levitt. Who like i talked about last week doesn't bring much as actual defender so we'll again you know you're gonna hear me. Keep saying we'll see what happens. But i would not be surprised to see on the outside of the raiders roster anwar wrapping things up with cornerback. And i mean. I don't really think this one is going to be much of a surprise anymore. But it's never lawson now the raiders. Do get some help because never lost the suspended. And they can't cut him but at the same time he doesn't count towards towards the roster counter or anything like that so it's not that big of a deal for these first two weeks in the raiders to see what nate hobbs look like in the first two weeks to see if they want to bring back lost or not. But i'll tell you i think nate. Hobbs has just taken this position. I think talked about that last week too. I think nate is earned the earned the starting cornerback. Spot earned the starting slot. Cornerback spot and i mean yesterday for lawson i think put the nail in the coffin. It felt like and. I don't think they work because it was a preseason game but it felt like the forty niners were targeting loss and like they had a game plan of like. Yeah once twenty six on the field. Just throw at them like he got. He gave up a few catches and the benefit of a benefit of a few drops. As well and i mean it was just an ugly game for them. And it's a guy that you know. He's a veteran player. He kind of he is what he is at this point and i don't know if you can really expect anything more from them. So i got a feeling that nevin lawson's days are raider over and even when his suspension is up and week three. I don't know if he'll be back on the team. That's going to do it today. It seems to me completely inevitable that you were going to do what you're doing right now. Which is to be on stage and unscreened because of all those influences you talked about. Was there ever a moment along the way where you. We're gonna like be an accountant. Was there ever anything else on the radar for you or was it like. This is who. I'm going to be well. You didn't see my grades. So i knew very early on. I needed to hold my personality. I think anything else. Not really. I mean i. I grew up with a very practical father who always was worried about the rainy day for me and so we looked into other things you know. I thought for a while. I want to be a lawyer. That was never really gonna fly some other things. I thought i would want to do but i was lucky enough to get to get yes to get to get in And yeah and i say i just feel like i've been lucky enough to to be challenged by it. All these years to to still love it to still be ignited by at all And i really there's been there's been years writing get work and times in our career where we're hiring or not hiring or the right musicals are being done or you're just like two inches too short to be opposite the leading or many many weird reasons that we don't get jobs in show business and those those can knock you down but I don't think there's ever a moment. I really wanted to do anything else. And things happen really quickly for you. I mean you're you're on a soap opera where you're how do you know all this did you do. It's all. it's all pipe into my ear inn. Now tinier worlds. You're nominated for emmys your vacation. Because vicki everybody loves like you're getting good stuff early. Doing good work..

Yes because you wanna put if you wanna put yourself out there and you're going to have to go through some fear and goes through some. There are some players out there for sure you have to be able to spot them. Quicker the red flags but know that there's green flags out there too and then reinforced those people. Because if you have all of this fear then how are you going to get to the other side. How do we wrap this up black. I mean black in do we did. We'd like the blake no scratchy. Well let me list. "Yeah i think the best places to if you have a friend that you know that does drive combined driving then call them and say hey look. This is what i'm looking for because a lot of people. Don't advertise their carriages. It's by word of mouth and then by the time it gets around. You're like oh. I was looking for a carriage. I wouldn't get it but there are reasonably priced carriages out there. That are very good carriages. New GPT-3 Models Can Generate Images From Text
"Open a has introduced two new. gpt three models. The first is called clip. Which can classify images and categories from arbitrary text. The second is more interesting. It's doll e which can generate images entirely from snippets of text coding. The it technology review for all gpt threes flair. Its output can feel untethered from reality as if it doesn't know what it's talking about that's because it doesn't by grounding text and images researchers at open a and elsewhere are trying to give language models a better grasp of the everyday concepts that humans used to make sense of things dolly and clip. Come at this problem from different directions. At first glance clip contrasted language image. Pre-training is yet another image recognition system. Except that it has learned to recognize images not from labeled examples in curated data sets most existing models do but from images and their captions from the internet. It learns what's in an image from a description rather than a one word labels such as cat or banana clip is trained by getting it to predict which caption from a random selection of thirty. Two thousand captions is the correct one for a given image to work this out. Clip learns to link a wide variety of objects with their names and the words that describe them this then let's it identify objects in images outside. It's training set. Most image recognition systems are trained to identify certain types of objects such as faces in surveillance videos or buildings in satellite images. Like gpt three clip can generalize across tasks without additional training. It is also less likely than other state of the art image recognition models to be led astray by adversarial examples which have been subtly altered in ways that typically confused algorithms even though humans might not notice a difference instead of recognizing images dolly which i'm guessing is a wally slash dolly pun draws them. This model is a smaller version of. Gpt three that has also been trained on text image pairs taken from the internet. Given a short natural language captions such as a painting of a capybaras sitting in a field at sunrise or a cross section view of a walnut dali generates lots of images that match it dozens of capybaras of all shapes and sizes in front of orange and yellow backgrounds. "Guest. Today is Alex which Hausky. She's an adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University. And the deputy chief technology officer for innovation for the city of New York. She recently released a book called the Information Trade. How Big Tick conquers countries challenges our rights and transforms all worlds. I sat down with her last week. At Cornell Tech to explore further with her these notion of net states. Her book starts in two thousand and seven with the first iphone launch. It's hard to believe it was only thirteen years ago. Which Hausky calls it? Our last mass magical tech moment a time when the entire world got truly excited over technological breakthrough so I began by asking her what she means by that. I really thought back to when the IPHONE came out how incredibly different it was from the kinds of technology we were using and the excitement and the enthusiasm around this new device. People were waiting in line camping out overnight to get the iphone heart of it was a really good marketing campaign that hyped the product but part of it was people. Were just so excited about this idea that it would be not just a phone but a device that you could use for its maps for APPs for all kinds of things and this was still a time when I think people looked at the Internet as democratizing force as something that was mostly good for the most part people still felt really good about their technology and this has changed dramatically. Yeah I think since two thousand seven we have seen technology take a lot of turns not for the better as we've moved online with social media. I think in the beginning. We thought we were just connecting with our friends and then after the two thousand sixteen presidential election the United States. We realized that we weren't just connecting with people. We knew we weren't even just connecting with people in our own country. We were connecting with people who were foreign Actors trying to disrupt our election and between that and news that social media companies were sharing our data or selling our data to people that we had no idea who they were. I think people felt this great sense of distrust and worry about what technology was doing in their lives. So when I started with this idea of the iphone being this mass magical tech moment it was because I think that that starry-eyed hope for the future of technology really started to turn around that time and I think that's something that we've kind of lost at this point so you built builds on an OP. Ed that you wrote for wired back in two thousand seventeen in which you coined a new term that of net states in your wired piece you wrote we need new language to describe these non-state non bad guys. Can you first start by explaining? What net states are? Why we needed these new term. Talk a little bit about this idea that they're non states but they're not not violent actors. There's a very specific moment where I got the idea for this. Which was actually in two thousand fifteen so two years before. The article came out with the Isis attacks on Paris. It was this horrific event. We knew they were what we called. Non-state actors then we saw groups like anonymous hacker collective and others trying to take down twitter accounts from Isis Recruiting people and we saw that. There was a role for places like youtube and Google and facebook to play to stop the spread of Isis recruiting material online. It seemed like these tech companies had a role to play in international peace and security but they weren't non-state actors. 'cause that term has come to mean just violent or extremists entities. But they're not nation-states. Either they're not countries so I felt like they needed to be some other way to describe them tech companies that had global reach that were involved in territories that used to be just the domain of governments like defense and diplomacy infrastructure in citizen services. But also that were in some way swayed by a belief that the people that working at these tech companies weren't just after a bottom line but they really had this sense that their technology was there to do good in the world. I introduced this idea of net states and the funny story. Here is that when I wrote the article in Two Thousand Fifteen? My readers friends of mine said. I don't think you have enough evidence here. I think this is a little bit far fetched side. Put the article aside for two years. Then it was after Hurricane Maria in two thousand seventeen hit the island of Puerto Rico and the entire island lost power at low cell phone connectivity and Internet service and the US Federal Government. Just really did not respond quickly. But you know who did private tech companies? So Tesla came in with power packs to provide solar energy and Google has project loon. Which are these low altitude balloons that provide internet connectivity? So it was the tech actors that were providing basic services that the countries weren't so at that point. I thought OK. I really think I have something here. And that's what I propose the article and when it got published some people said well why are they not just corporations? There's lots of multinational corporations global corporations that work in many many fields. Look at Coca Cola. Look at McDonalds. They're all over the world. Can you imagine McDonald's having a counter terrorism unit? This is something that doesn't happen. But because tech companies provide the services and platforms that allow people to organize and to connect and to come together to find each other. There's activities happening on their platforms. That make it so they have to get involved. In counter terrorism they have to get involved in diplomacy because all kinds of things are happening with their tools and services that they never really intended at least of companies that you pick as net states. He's really interesting. They are the usual suspects so Amazon. Apple facebook Google. But you add to the mix Tesla and you leave out twitter. Yes can you explain why because I think when we talk about big tech? We think Apple Amazon Google facebook twitter. We don't necessarily think about Tesla. There's a very specific reason. I I chose the companies that I did. All of them are first of all massive in scale and size and in terms of revenue so they span the globe in terms of their user base. We have touch points with them throughout our days. That's number one number two. They're all expanding beyond their core products and services into other areas that are in our physical world so for instance Amazon purchased wholefoods facebook has as I said before started. Its own counterterrorism team. That's larger than the State Department's counter-terrorism team Ella so they are really getting engaged in physical world activities. Twitter has not diversified in this way. Twitter is really sticking to its core product. Which is micro blogging platform? And it's not investing in or acquiring other businesses to expand into other realms. So that's one of the reasons. I didn't include twitter and the reason I did. Include Tesla Tesla so funny case because in some ways it's just a car company but it's also An energy provider so it has this arm called power wall which produces these home energy storage units. That people can buy to go off the grid if they wish or partner with. There's other company called solar city. They can have solar panels installed in their on their roofs. And then store that energy in these power packs and be completely detached from the grid so the reason that I included Tesla and its various other entities is that it is a perfect example of how tech company or tech based company expanding into sort of real world

We've been overcome by technology technology in real life and now there is the perfect time to make the matrix four to retroactively fix the matrix two and three which could have been one very good movie rumor was i heard this this was back in the early two thousands that the animatrix and the matrix two and three it was supposed to be a trilogy but they wanted to do one before the matrix one after the matrix but because of the star wars. I don't know if this is true. Through warner brothers like no no no so they made the animatrix and then they split two and three into two movies but it should have just been one and that's why this movie's filled up loaded. I've watched the first one planning but the second to there's an entire sequence if i remember correctly with the architect where there's a bunch of nieto's what easier franchise to fix than one where there's that many reality is easier. It's a movie about coding recode. The damn matrix is right there. So all you needed was the people that want it and the technology to catch up to make it different enough to make it worth making and the talent and we got all that in this announcement one of my very favorite things in this announcement is a quote and it says many of the ideas lilly and i explored twenty years ago about our reality are or even more relevant net lake more relevant now. Or any sort of second unit what the assemblage blue-chip the matrix is because we only have one which hausky instead of the pair so i'm really curious what the movie feels like and we'll be able to tell it's one of them instead of the pair of them because we've only seen them work together to my knowledge.
