What the Shell? Cracking the Lobster's Mysteries

"I still get emails about this episode of the show friends where Ross and Rachel the characters finally hookup after this law. Middle Row Manson phoebe is Kinda Tree hugger in the group She's like Oh look I knew it. Her lobster. Because, she has this kind of pop culture idea going that lobsters made life. In, there it's going to happen. How did you know that? Because she's your lobster on you guys, it's a known fact that lobsters fall love and mate for life and you know you can actually see old lobster couples walking around their tank. Hoping 'cause. They. Are lobster. All these years later, I can still hear phoebe in my head saying bad. She convinced millions of people that lobsters are super romantic on the all I care is that lobsters are super delicious but I guess it's good that they have some happiness before ending up inside a buttered roll. Delicious Delicious Lobster Roll I live in New England and Lobster are pretty much the pinnacle of summer here. Perfect for the latest episode of gastropod The podcast that looks at food. Through the Lens of Science in history I'm Cynthia Graber and I'm Nicola Twilley and this episode we're considering the lobster like first things I do lobster's really have lifelong love affairs as phoebe claims or are there relationships a little more complicated than that heads up for those of you listening with folks who might find lobster sex little too steamy. Sorry. But this episode really does get into it with the lobster bedroom action you have been warned time getting a little worm. Already but speaking of steamy, how did steamed lobsters go from prison fair to the highest chalance a fine dining out of the lobster go from trashy too fancy and finally, what does the military one with our lobsters quick note from our last episode for you Baker's out there some listeners. Let us know that American pyrex is no longer borough silica glass. European. PYREX is which is great. But American. PYREX is now made of tempered Soda Lime Glass which is the same. Stuff as drinking glasses, but the tempering means it's harder and also heat resistant, but it's not quite as shatterproof Hasbro Silica class. So Americans can cook in this new PYREX. There's a lot of fine print from the company about how to use. It can actually shatter. We've updated the episode, but we also wanted those of you who already listen to know and be careful if you've got the newer American pyrex exploding glass is not a fun mix in cakes and casseroles. Couple of weeks ago I had to Maine, with my partner Tim for some very critical gastropod research someone has to do the hard work on this show Cynthia taking one for the team like the hero she is. I'M GONNA see how easy it is to crack this lobster shell. They didn't give me any like cranky things. How do I crack a lobster? Without a lobster cracker to bring your own. It didn't say turns out. All I had to do is go back to where the Napkins were and grab a nutcracker okay. I'M GONNA I'M GONNA try. Okay. That's not so bad. So the cracking wasn't super hard to do, and then I sat right into gorge myself on all that delicious lobster meat of course, all the while dipping it into the cup of melted butter. One of the very few things I miss about living on the east coast is the summertime lobster roll. I personally am a hot butter girl although I won't turn down a Cold Mayo. Role I'm equal opportunity when it comes to lobster roll I love lobster rolls. I also love whole steamed lobsters as you listeners all just heard and some are really is the height of lobster season here. It's when the waters closer to shore warm up and the lobsters crawl into that shallower water to and mate, and they also happen to crawl into lots of local lobster traps. Summer is also when the shore in. New. England finally. Warms up enough for lots of tourists to crawl out onto it and enjoy a summer vacation tourists like Trevor Corson of the book, the secret life of lobsters my grandparents were summer visitors to Maine when I was a little kid and we would go visit them there and as a very small child, I was completely entrenched with the lobster boats when they would come into the dock. So watch them unload their lobster catch and to me, the lobstermen were were like these cowboys of the East you know they were these romantic rugged individualism and I was so angered of of them in their boats that I had decided already. Pretty. Early on when I was a kid I was going to grow up to be a Lobsterman and that didn't plan pan out. At all trevor became a writer instead, which as everyone knows is way less glamorous but he figured out a way to finagle himself into becoming a temporary lobstermen by writing a book about it, and so I actually moved to the small island. You know with seventy people on it year round in the winter and lived there for two years and became what's called a stern man on a lobster boat fishermen used often the term fishermen are stern man in a gender neutral way. "Been a longtime follower of both of you since about day one every week and every day you to give me in so many other parents with laughter tears in such relatable content. Thank you both for doing what you do never stopped being yourselves. Thank you. Oh, that's sweet. We get it. Doesn't it. I'm your host Meredith Mason and I'm your host tiffany. Jenkins. This podcast will discuss all things marriage motherhood and everything in between. Please remember we're not professionals at anything you may actually need. So any advice we give you you can take. Or leave because it might be crap on today's episode of take it or leave it. My husband got tired of not talking about anything and just straight up nonsense so I did. I did find a couple of stories to talk about and he is right. I was just getting straight up lazy my brain I'm telling you this decision fatigue. My brain has just been so overwhelmed. So I picked a couple of topics to chat about. But today we have Kim opening up the show for us from Ontario. Be Sure to call three, one, five, eight, three, four, two, six, nine, six, and leave us a message so you can open up the show for us. Hey, this is Kim from kick down on the mom of a two year old saucy girl an eleven year old boy that's open the show a little differently today and says just doing her mom sale. Let's do a very proud moment. No live egging. She come up with that I. Think. So she said she wanted us to do a mom bragging moment. Momma proud mom men and she also said no lie bagging which I really liked that she. That's cute. Cool brave trail-blazing. She's trailblazer. I love it. Okay. So do you have any? I'm sure you must have some one. Yeah a few. Schneider's of one. No, I mean I. Proud moment. Just like I've been out of town in Georgia so I haven't really been around lately for the past since Friday but I kept my kids home today so that I, could hang out with them. Nice because I miss him. Yeah. You were gone for a for a little bit was just you in Paris that went? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Because I I saw your trip I mean what you shared of it. Anyway I cried like a baby and I was leaving yeah, I'm sure. What about you? I don't know if I mentioned this last week or not I. Know I mentioned it online on alive or something but. All of my kids summer camps were cancelled obviously because of covid and so. They were really bummed about that, and then there is a we found a surf camp. That's down at the beach and. I talked with David about it and I was like, Gosh we let the kids do this because they've been boogie boarding all summer and Sophia was like I WANNA learn to surf and so We decided that we were going to let them do it. We went and we watched one of the days of Surf Camp at the end of the last week to. See how they did it and to see really where the kids all over each other, what what were they actually distancing how many kids were in a group with these coaches and they had really small groups. They had three kids with a coach and they were out in the water and it's open air, and so it made me comfortable enough to sign them up. And what I can tell you as I am so proud of Sofia. She looks so comfortable on a surfboard they my kids were never beach prior to coming over to this coast and I can tell you that they just WanNa live at the beach now, which is where we've spent most of our time because it's very easy to be outside right now and you're not freaking out. But she's just getting up on that surfboard and she's just like ride in waves and it's the first thing that she's been excited about since she. Stopped doing competitive gymnastics. So it made me happy and it made me proud that she was getting out there and enjoying something and I don't know it's been. Good, job it's been great. So there's that that's amazing I'm glad that they like it faraway. They're saying I'm too far away you I I can't see their comments. So how the video they're saying I'm too far away in the video but I can't move the table because my large dog is sitting in one. Can you see the livestream is it is it from Dave's point of view? No it's here. It's just the cameras far farther away. It's usually right about there. Okay. Well, then maybe it's I, Dunno. I duNNo. Okay. Her arm. It's weird. My kid had a surgery after she broke her arm they had to screw the to the head of the elbow. The all back. The head of her elbow, the only head of her elbow had like a the. So the owner has that like weird bony side that sticks out that looks like like what you imagine a dog bone like when they pick up a dog bone I mean it's got like that piece it's called the head and it's right here and when she when she dislocated her elbow, this snapped off and broke, and so they had to screw the head back onto the bone. So she has a screw inside of that. It's it's intense decent size screw and she complains that it hurts all the time. So she keeps asking me to take her back and have it removed and I'm like I, don't I don't think they take those out like I think that's how it stays on now like I don't and she just wants it taken out. She complains every day that it hurts. So she has A. Pediatrician appointment for a well visit next month and I'm going to ask them. It'd be like, Hey, my kid had that. Had that screwed back on do they In our unit, an elbow head or can we live without it? Do you need it like once the bone heals can you take the screw out is going to be my question? No because then they're gonNA have to re break the bone to get it out your Wacko. Okay. Well, I don't. I don't know the answer it's going to be in I. Don't know either but anyway so. Anne who's olmec to`sell it probably does need to stay in there which I I keep telling her but she's you know eleven and ignores everything I say because I'm a moron. And she's constantly telling me how wrong I am about everything in life. So there's that it was I was listening to our podcast on the road trip Because I've never actually like sit down. Sat. Down and listened to it back and I. was like man I really need speed it up like I feel like I talked really slow and like take forever to get to the point. I don't I've never noticed that I have really I think yeah. It's like I was boring myself. With my mouth, my own voice. Anyway okay. As let's get into it now, I'm in a rush because I want to speed through everything because I feel do slow. I. Don't I don't think that's true but anyway. All right. So I figured we talk about a couple of stories because I've gotten I have gotten questions about both of these topics, email to me and message to me. So we ran a story over unfiltered free parents last week about the Hasbro troll doll. Did you see this tiffany? Yes, I did. Okay. So this troll doll, which is based on the character poppy. Is there a lot of pressure from these studios? Maybe they've gained investment off the back of their previous success in the being pushed like you need more than a one hit wonder. Scrabble app faces backlash from traditionalists as board game goes online

"Today's topic is scrabble. US Avid. Word nerds have been using the a scrabble APP for many years now it's a great way to fill the time and challenge your mind as you deal with the stress of corona virus and zoom calls. My Mom who's eighty five years old with an incredible mind for words plays every day. Unfortunately despite America's urgent need for things to pass the time right now, the folks Hasbro decided to kill ea scrabble. For most people. It stopped working on June sixth. Almost five hundred people have commented on my blog post about the shutdown and boyer they, upset. In the place of EA scrabble, you can try the new APP scrabble go created by scope. If, you can imagine they've game fide scrabble. scrabble go includes throbbing graphics in Garish Orange, Yellow and purple. It constantly bugs you to get your facebook friends to play. You could earn chestful of virtual prizes and customize your scrabble tiles. It includes duels, tournaments and timed contests that everyday scrabble players would have no interest in. After ten you get to watch pure. Add for other silly games more suitable for children. I did my best to give scrabble go a fair chance, but even if you can get past the distracting graphics lighting up like a Vegas Casino, there are problems. I cost four dollars ninety nine cents a month to get rid of the ADS and get features that used to be free like seeing the best move that you missed. Sixty dollars a year is pretty steep. Second. If you like to play the machine, you'll be disappointed. You Play Zoe an animated Avatar with an unnaturally large head. WHO's a pretty lame scrabble player? Many players, soliciting you to play, are actually bites. WHO also tend to be terrible? Third the game includes boosts which allow people to cheat. Once you accumulate enough gems. You can swap out your tiles anytime when any move which makes it way too easy. The only escape is a deeply buried classic mode. Finally. Many women players tell me that men are hitting on them using scrabble. Go as a dating site. My evaluation despite the name scrabble go isn't even good enough to use when sitting in the bathroom. Don't despair though there are alternatives. If you like to play the computer, the best choice is word master pro. This elegant APP created by developer and Brazil has a computer that plays at lightning speed, and can be set to a high challenge level, and to avoid strange words. You'd never spot outside a scrabble dictionary. It's only three ninety nine a one time purchase. There are scrabble variants like Lexus and works with friends, but classic scrabble players will object since they don't duplicate the traditional scrabble layout. If you want a timed game, go to I. S C Dot Aro, the Internet scrabble club. It's a rush, but not everyone loves the stress of a countdown timer.

"So he designed to distributed those the the company's still does still there And Sunglasses and things like that and In that world Just like the apparel world and in many other places are big deal and a licensed brands are a big deal. So most people think of things like Like a Gucci Michael Coors Nike is a big one obviously Where they take that brand and they put it on. I wear sunglasses. And then they can obviously ask the consumer to pay a lot more because Nike's very popular brands including Nike. Didn't make the prescription glasses that I got from my in right optometrist. Right some big company bought the rights or Got Agreement with Nike to use that Swedish on their on their sunglasses. And they're in the frames and obviously now commanded much higher dollar and Nike gets on their side. They cut of the sales and also Often just kind of like flat payment. In addition to that and that that percentage of the sales they get a royalty and and it varies. It's all negotiation so everybody cuts a different deal for that But you know it's it's in theory a win win for the two companies Nike and the and the manufacturer of whatever product they licensed to and And a third win Is in again in? Theory is for the customer because they get a product that they like and they generally like it then. Yeah it's everybody wins so that that's kind of generally how royalties work right. It's Somebody who specializes in a certain product they need to kind of Pump it up with some brand power and instead of building their own brand which can take decades and it may not work they can go find another brand in an unrelated world and they can pay that brand the owner of that brand and and they're basically saying. Hey I wanNA use your logo. I WANNA use your name on my stuff. And they have brand power overnight in their in their category and everybody gets cut so in my world in eyewear as it happened like we had a need for a new kids Brandt We at the time and I believe still. The company's still is a license ee of Nickelodeon But you always want more brands in your portfolio so we had a need for additional kids brands. We had already kind of used up all the nickelodeon brands and we had sold product to all the different retailers and of course now retailers asks ask for more so we needed more kids brands and John Happens to be a big fan of one has broken in particular transformers and I remembered that our licensing director had come to me before and the licensing director is basically in charge of all the contracts and all the deals that the companies are cutting with each other She had come to me before giving be a A brand presentation from Hasbro that my company had gotten a few years before before I joined and Hasbro had actually proposed in the past a licensing deal to several eyewear manufacturers so it can go both ways you know these big companies that have brands that they think are very valuable. Obviously Hasbro makes a big deal. Their brands they know that they can make additional money. Selling just the brand licensing the brand to other companies and again the other companies do most of the work Creating the products Using those licensed brands and again what has broken is a check in the mail. What's what's that presentation called. That are the proposal called. I mean it's a licensing deck. You know it can it can be. It can be really anything it can be as gimmicky fine or as conflict straight laced in financial in nature As a company wants but It's it's a basically a licensing deck. If you said that to anybody in licensing they would they would know you were okay what you're talking about. It's like a reverse R. S. P. or something. Yeah it's it's basically would basically looks like is like in the case of Hasbro and really any company. It's them kind of saying like here are all the brands in our portfolio. Here all the brands that we own. Here's how popular they are Here's their target audience. Here are the sales every year In other licensed categories so ideally that they will say like you know this brand already works in all these different kinds of products like it's already proven successful that you can. You can put a transformers logo Autobahn Shield on just about anything and it will help sales so they kind of demonstrate that in the presentation and then sometimes they will In some cases actually kind of like put a very kind of loose structure in place at the end of the presentation. Just to give you an idea of how many years they would like an agreement with you Kind of how they healthy structure those kind of deals like at a very high level that would be at the very end of the presentation. But yeah it's mostly just the company kind of bragging on itself and trying to convince you that this sprint that these brands very popular very relevant and they work already As a licensed brand so it does happen both ways right so anyways that triggered in my head. Hey then I guess this means. Hasbro doesn't have an I wear license licensee and we need more kids brands. So let's Meet Hasbro at Licensing Expo and licensing expo is a giant trade show. That happens every year in Las Vegas and licensing. Expo looks a lot like toy fair. Frankly because there are giant booths everywhere in the trade show in the ballroom the Exhibit Hall. Hasbro's one definitely one of the bigger booths and in addition to obviously toy brands. I would say probably half. The show is toy. Brands like youth brands. Entertainment rants There are all kinds of things. So there's like a Martha Stewart booth and there's eighty Back in the day. There was a duck commander booth in. You know there's all kinds of Brands automobile brands any any company. That again wants to convince you to buy the rights to their brand and put it on your product. They are at that trade show and we as a team myself a couple of other people. We scheduled a meeting with Hasbro at their booth Which I was very excited about obviously and and we at that point. It's very casual you. Kind of meet with Hasbro's licensing director and you have your licensing director and you just can't you basically at that point you just discuss each other's companies and you're just kind of feeling each other out so. Hasbro just kind of goes back over their size and their success. And all that stuff you as a company you go over your history with licensing Your you're giving give an idea of your annual sales and you're just trying to kind of validate each other right so so after that initial meeting everybody goes home and of the licensing directors go to work and so other than the contract negotiations which are just numbers. Not as interesting. What you are doing often is showing Hasbro. Especially if Hasbro isn't very experienced in your product category you putting together prototypes in drawings and creative examples of what you do with the Hasbro brands and so you create a presentation and a pitch to Hasbro to show them. Hey we're you can trust us with your brand so we can take your logos we can take your Ip we can take your trademarks intellectual property and we can put it on our product. It's GonNa look good and people are GonNa want to buy it in. Here's what it looks like. So we sent them a presentation that showed all these transformers and my little pony and Plato product designs and concepts glasses sunglasses and all that jazz and that basically just shows them that. Hey we're not you know we're not amateurs at that at the product level and that's really what matters so you want product that will sell so you know. It's a courtship They they know that you were working kind of blind Because one thing that doesn't happen in licensing very often sometimes but usually not you don't get official artwork and yes before you cut the deal so has rose not going to send you all the official files for like transformers stuff. They did that. Yeah Yeah So. You're they know there's kind of a wink wink that they know that you're scrapping together. Things you find on the Internet and doing the best you can to just kind of concept stuff them so if everybody's happy with what they see a deal is kind of agreed pod and you know kind of what that is at a fundamental level is. It's a number of years. You guys agree to how many years you're going to be partners up. Basically how many years is Hasbro going to promise that you are the only company that's GonNa make transformers glasses or transformers wrapping paper or transformers clean? X.'s put your protected from From Hasbro going out and finding another partner however in some cases Companies do sign. Non exclusive deals. They're less expensive They're higher risk obviously But most deals in our exclusive so the company like Hasbro's committing to you Three years five years six years. Whatever it is that no other competitor in your space is going to get these brands and And then you also agree to the percentage of royalties so again that is. Hasbro is going to take a percent of your sales of their branded products. They'RE GONNA put it in their pocket and then the final thing. That's kind of like a updates of these agreements is a minimum so that is sales minimum. And it's basically agreeing to a minimum payment that the company is going to give Hasbro So you the LICENSEE Hasbro's licensor Hasbro is giving you their brand. You're taking their brand. So they are the licensor. And you're the licensing so as the licensee you're promising Hasbro that hey no matter how good or bad sales are and sometimes things don't work out even if the sales are terrible. I'm going to at least give you this much money every year. That's your minimum agreement. And you agree to that too so That's Kinda Reassurance from Hasbro that we're going to get at least something for for our trouble in at least something for risking giving our brand to somebody else. So when those things are all lined up what happens is then you get the official artwork in content and all that stuff and you know. In a case of a company's biggest Hasbro were nickelodeon or Mattel or or any of those kind of entertainment at brands. Of course that's very organized and clean and and you are you as the license. You are kind of kept up to date and you're you are regularly kind of seasonally sent new content which in some cases can be spoilers. If you're interested or knowledgeable into brand you do from time to time get sneak. Peeks at stuff pretty far advanced because the artwork and the creative content that accompany like Hasbro will give the t shirt maker or the I wear maker or again. Any of these licensees. They prepare that artwork way in advance very very far advanced. And they give that to us so we have plenty of time to design product. Get it manufactured often overseas. And have it brought over in time for it to hit market around the time. That has bruce core products. The toys are hitting the market. So everything looks pretty much like it's coordinated So we get we get stuff very far in advance and of course you sign nondisclosure agreements. So that's that's part of the deal for sure That a lot of the artwork that you're seen Six MONTHS EIGHT MONTHS. Nine months in advance That is confidential and your factories also half understanding that this is confidential and everybody does the best that they can. S- you to keep the secret so to speak. We know it's not a perfect system but I will say that John was very discreet. Oh thank you I would like you know. It'd be nice. Know some of this stuff but no mum's the word that's true. Yeah that's true that's true you especially again like if you have any knowledge of the brand like you would see certain things that would be exciting to share. But you honor that agreement because you never know and again. That's the agreement so we we see kind of across sports really hard to keep that secret the more people that are kind of exposed to that stuff especially when you get close to toy fair but but that's so anyway so once once the agreement is kind of set. One thing that I didn't cover is Approvals so like I said when when in the courtship when you guys are trying to get the deal with the company You're doing the best you can to make concepts that you think will make Hasbro happy. Wants the deals cut? Though when you have all the official artwork in all the stuff that you need the assets that you need to make real product now it's game time and now you have to make prototypes of the real stuff. So and this is for any product category has included has rudas like test shots in drawings and in that kind of stuff that we're familiar with all the all the licensed licensing companies all the licensees. They do the same thing The difference is they have to submit that stuff to Hasbro for approval so you're submitting prototypes of your product to.

Meg Whitman, CEO of Quibi: Leadership in crisis is about getting down into the trenches.

"Question I wanNA start off with is weakened asked all of the time by people in our audience who are thinking about taking their next step in their career and they always ask us about how should they think about joining startup and ward. Should they consider when making that decision you joined Ebay what was relatively small at the time? Watergate things that you've thought of back then given what it later on became. Yeah well I was at Hasbro running the Preschool Division. Which was Barney Arthur teletubbies? My personal favorite Mr Potato Head and I got a call to go. There's no name. Startup called Ebay. We were barely on the Internet in Nineteen Ninety Eight. We're doing email so it was really you know completely new horizon. It's hard to imagine where we sit today and I have no to the haven't her? I said definitely not doing this. What do you call back later? That makes should really think about it. You're hooked for Ebay so I went out and met with hero media who was the founder twenty six years old time and at the end of the day. I went out there mostly because I didn't WanNa make the head hunter math and I got to San Francisco airport that night and I called my husband and I said we should do and some of the things that I would look for in. Consumer companies are is there a features and functionality benefits? If it'll allow you to do something you couldn't do before so like in my proctor and gamble days later why's cleaner fresher breath And do doesn't is there an emotional connection and if you have both of those a consumer product Bingo? Pm? Many are told me that people have met their best friends on Ebay and they were deeply connected to this website. And so I saw something that is very unique you know and then I always look for. Who's the founder or the CEO who is on board of directors? How well is the company funded? What is the consumer need that this new idea is delivering and it can be a B. Two B. Customer or the customer? But I always go to seamer going to think about this. You know in the end you jump into the abyss honestly and you have to ask yourself. What's the worst thing that lettuce like one of the craziest things that happened or something when you look back at those early days and Ebay they were like oh I did not think we are going to get through this well? I'll tell you one funny story in the recruiting process. And then I'll tell you the thing I worked wasn't sure we'd get through so when I went out to interview with Pierre and was super glad because I got to this office building and there was a receptionist and for some reason the fact that they had a receptionist to seem like it legitimized the country. Nothing I was very relieved my first day at work. I go in and where the the receptionist she used to sit. There was never sections. There was no desk. Don't make sure no receptionists. Go about my day and I sit down. I'M GONNA cube next year about. Halfway through the day I said appear what happened to the receptionist. They looked at me and he said Oh. We hired her for the day because we were pretty sure that we had a receptionist. He wouldn't think we were like big enough for legitimate enough to come work for and say well how right you were so the biggest thing that happened at Ebay that I wasn't sure we would recover from is on June tenth nineteen ninety nine. We had a twenty two hour outage for twenty two hours. You could not get to the website. Think about this. We had all these fires all these sellers. Nothing could happen. The CNN truck was parked outside of Ebay. Wanting hourly updates on the status report was it was the most frightening thing I've ever seen because we really did not know what had happened as it turned out. We have corrupted the entire back end database and took us twenty two hours to read about two hours before we brought the site backup. I looked at here and I said well. We can't bring this back up and he said don't worry right about now. Db database administrator will come running in here and they'll tell us what they found and that they're about to bring back up and I looked up here. Yeah okay. That's wishful thinking literally as if on cue about ten minutes later a DB Guinness Okay. Site is coming up. I mean obviously. That's hugely stressful. And an example. That's clearly marked in your memory. What are you like in a stressful situation? How do you react when stressed? Yeah I dive in really deep because I think leadership in crisis is about getting down into the trenches by actually slept at Ebay for over a month. Wait what yeah my system to get cops. You slept at Ebay for a month. Yes because I was sort of just have to be there like port of leadership. I was not a very deep technology executive at the time. I'm much deeper from a technology perspective today and so the only thing I could do was to be by being there lead by taking the temperature of the engineers leave by making sure all of our partners. Cisco OR VERA sign or Sun Microsystems. Were all on board to help us and so I figured that I really just couldn't leave. Because the thing was so unstable. We had a girl confrontations conference room and we use the bathrooms so when I'm fascinated by is obviously this was over twenty years ago. Workplaces look very different today. Era Trying to look different today. There's a huge movement around wellness and avoiding burnout in protecting employees from. Burn out when you look back at those days and the decision to sleep there. Would you make the same decision today? Absolutely one hundred percent because you know when there's and this was truly a crisis this was not just like sort of something that happened. This was really a crisis I mean the future of the company was at stake air and you know people have different leadership styles from my leadership style. It was absolutely the only thing to do. He considers no substitute for being there to say the truth is on the whole face. It's not at headquarters and the call was are not our network operation center and so to be there with the engineers talking to the vendors and partners just made all the difference. You know. We're interviewing you right now in a crazy time in our world where nobody is in the office now and leaders in you know us. Included are trying to figure out how to be strong. Ceo's how to be strong managers and how to show leadership them curious like you. Are you know in new leadership role at a new company However you being there. How are you showing that you're digging in? You can't physically be there. I feel like I live on zoom and we do too and I'm trying to drop into meeting. So my management style in the workplace is by walking around. I mean especially with a company of two hundred and fifty people like you know everybody above ground. See People go up to their desk. See what's happening so now. I'm dropping into meetings that I'm not actually necessarily invited to per se. Sometimes I just listened this Friday. We're doing it a company meeting on slack Which we have planned. I had breakfast with Nag which I did once a week. Which literally was breakfast with Mac? So we're still doing breakfast with meg only as coffee with MEG. And Its bring your own so we're just kind of keeping up some of those things I just got off the slack chat with women in the workplace at pretty and You know just spend half an hour answering questions from our women employees which by the way about fifty one percent of our companies. When you mentioned earlier that you become a much more technically proficient leader curly and I do not have a tech background. We certainly understand what it's like to check in with engineers and show up and show support without necessarily knowing the INS and outs of what they're talking about. How did you start to dive in to that skill set? I think for a lot of people. It can be intimidating but doing it. I mean honestly. There was no substitute for being there when the website went down. I mean just by sitting there listening to what they're talking about asking questions understanding what's happening understanding you know. Actually what a back. End Database actually does and what is corrupted what happens so it was really being there and asking questions. I think those of us who do not have a technology background you just have to ask questions and interestingly when I first started asking questions I thought they're just going to think I'm not smart. Or what the heck am I doing here if I if I add value from a tech perspective and in a funny way but I've found. Is that engineer? Plug to tell you about what they're doing and so. I just learnt by asking questions by doing it was completely on the job training for those ten years and then a different kind of tech at. Hp is that is that was big. Iron servers storage networking. Pretend trying new. Nothing about And so I just out below questions you obviously. Dramatically changed the trajectory ebay. Under your tenure. It became an enormous team generated. Billions of dollars in revenue. When you think back to what that did for you and we're going to dig into the next parts of your career. What do you think your core skill set is? What are you best at? People have sort of a core competency I think at my core I am a strategist and a market and probably on a strategist because my really my first job after Fangio was banned so I was trained in cost customers. Competitor Sustainable Competitive Advantage financial architecture. And so I think my core competency is probably strategy and I have a belief that if you had to rate strategy and less than perfect execution he'll be okay. If you have the wrong strategy and perfect execution you will not be okay and so I think that's probably my first company. See my second is from my training at PNG. Probably is marketing. Just been a marketer. You know almost sort of as a domain expert my whole life

"Welcome back to season two of zeroed IPO. Today we have a very exciting couple of entrepreneurs on the show. Rachel typical graph the founder of Mick Massey founder and CEO who was called by Entrepreneur magazine one of the fifty most daring entrepreneurs and we also have eric yuan the founder and CEO of Zoom. Which as we all know has grown into a beam of video conferencing. Yeah I think what's very interesting? Here is both enterprise software entrepreneurs one who is earlier in her journey another one who is later on in his journey. He's gone public taking it public but still has a lot of memory about what it was like to be at her stage so. I think this is going to be very very interesting. Let's introduce our guests grey. Eric Yuan is the CEO and founder of Zoom and has grown zoom into a little bit of a big company. I think it's very small compared to what you're going to become. That's how he thinks about it right down. Eric started the company in two thousand eleven and appealed last year and at the IPO. The company had a market cap of a little over nine billion now less than a year later. It's at twenty one billion on the public markets. Tha that's more that's more more a little bit more. That's great that's growth node and never look at him. I never let's right notice. This market cap is not sustainable revenue. Would you talk about the revenue growth? Revenue growth is very impressive. It's about on the order of about one hundred percent year over year kind of up on a six hundred plus million dollar revenue year consensus estimates. We're not seeing anything out of the ordinary here. That is very impressive. And when you can see that kind of growth that kind of scale that's something. That's very exciting. Well before we go any further. I want to introduce Rachel. Tipo graph the CEO and founder of MIC MAC which is a fast growing startup. And there's a lot of things I want to ask you about and talk to You. About part of the purpose of this show is to hear from you about how you're growing the company. What your hopes and aspirations for at our and any kind of obstacles that you see ahead that perhaps not me but the other two leaders of public companies might be able to chime in with some experience. Let me ask you to describe MC MAC for our listeners and talk a little bit about what the company does share so mic. Mac were a marketing ECOMMERCE platform fortune. Five hundred brands license our software to better understand their consumers by connecting digital invest minced. Online retail insights. So essentially when I put a dollar into facebook what does that mean for my performance at Walmart for example so my clients span. Campbell's Hasbro Lego L'OREAL Nestle essentially. If you sell it Amazon Target Walmart you will become my client because you live in darkness with retail data. Let Me Brag a little bit about you. If I may at age twenty four you became the global director of digital and social media at gap which seems pretty young to have that role. I wasn't doing much of anything at twenty four. I think I was taken out the mail for running that role at gap at the time. But then you walked away from that to start this company out of your apartment. I believe in Brooklyn that must have been a difficult decision similarly Eric. You had a big role at Webex. You were leading the engineering team. You had hundreds of engineers. You said your wife. Hey I think I need to go start this company. And she didn't like the idea yes. She's sort of an online at likely. That idea by almost field to graduate was twenty. Four years ordered the three of us. Degenerates Rachel Rachel? With killing by the way the other thing that I love about what I've heard about your career is Gary Chuck who was an investor. My company and I believe invested in yours describes you as a fucking gangster quote unquote and lucky to have his support. Let's talk about MC MAC and the growth of online video and the commercialization of online video. Obviously Eric has a massive video business. What you're trying to do with mic-mac some people describe it as infomercials for the web. I've heard the term mini-martial Did you come up with that may I coined? Yeah and the idea is that it was very hard before mic-mac to see video and buy something you had to jump through hoops. And the bounce rate was like above ninety percent when you click through and now with mic-mac the bounce rate comes down to often like just ten percent right and a thesis of MIC. Mac was I was a gap. I was seeing the growth of video. I was seeing the change in the customer journey so gap Dot Com. The home page was the most traffic web page when I started when I left the product. Detail pages were seen five. X. Amount of traffic so all of a sudden all of these landing pages were actually becoming the heartbeat of conversion but no senior leader was paying attention to them and then finally the rise of Amazon so the early signs at the major retailers were about to become new wall gardens. And if you talk to major. Cpt brands they would be investing hundreds of millions of dollars whether is in digital video social paid search programmatic and having no idea what the outcome was on the other side. So in your case you have this insight and you know it's a good insight. I'm going to start a company but you leave a massive company and now you're this tiny little entity all by yourself and you have your your powers. You have the insight that the bravest lady in the Roman. You're like little little the honest truth. We said we tell the truth. And you have these massive companies that could easily swoop in and take your idea like talk to us about. How do you navigate that? And I want to hear also from Eric because he was in the same boat as you leaving Webex. Yeah it starts with an insight. That's not the hard part. The hard part is executed and initially. My competitor advantage right is speed to market. I'm nimble I can move faster fast. Forward all of a sudden I start proving myself and then other companies begin to pay attention. Because obviously if I'm successful must mean that there's a larger opportunity out there. How did that make you feel what was your reaction to the you know? The encroachment potential encroachment. My first reaction was. This is a good thing because you don't want to be a lone ranger business. It means you're you're not doing something to market if you're the only one marquette so I was excited I'm like yeah like competition bring it on but then when you look at the size of those companies so I currently thirty employees my competitors have upwards of five thousand employees. Then you start to get a little bit scared because they could put you know. Fifty salespeople against the southwest territory and then no one at Kirk Dr Pepper. We're GonNa talk to me and those are. The dynamics began to change for me last year. Which was a like. I got a suit up. Because there's people who can be louder and market right now. I still have the utmost confidence in my product. I have most confidence in my ability to lead but the reality is that they're bigger than me. Eric talked pretty shortly to catch up. Because speed everything up today have thirty. You may not know in five years. Probably have five thousand or six thousand you know more than your competitors as

Bengals at the Combine in Indianapolis, taking a closer look at Joe Burrow

"With us here from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis where we will be all week so much going on. I'm waiting next with Adam. Schefter Louis Riddick Todd mcshay and Mike Tannenbaum just to catch you up right now. Here's what's happening today in Indianapolis. It will be a very busy week. At Five o'clock eastern though owners are expected to meet players to talk about the new CBA which could expand the playoffs and move to a seventeen game regular season. We've got forty seven. Nfl head coaches and GMT. We'll be talking today. You're also hear from SEC. Standouts Joe Borough and to a ton of Aloha who also addressed the media earlier today. Jonesboro put on an absolute show as you know on route to a national championship for Lsu setting an FBI. Single season record with sixty touchdown passes and Ditto. While completing a whopping seventy six percents of his passes and not only that but bro won the heisman trophy in dominant fashion receiving a record ninety point seven percent of the first place votes here. Our previous comments from Joe Borough on February seventeenth during a reception. For the Davey. O'brien award. He had this to say I do have leveraged the Bengals have their process and I have my process. We haven't even gotten to the combine yet. There's a lot of things that happened. Leading up to the draft. A lot of information gathered bras. Mother Robin shot down the idea. Her son does not want to play for the bengals. Saying we have no idea where that came from. It's a story out there that has created that doesn't have any substance at least from our perspective here Hasbro earlier today here at the combine. Of course I want to be the first pick. That's that's every kid's dream you know I've worked really really hard for this opportunity and I'm blessed to be in this position. I'm a ball player. Whoever picks me on my go show up? How play whoever for forever dressing? You know. I'm just not going to be presumptuous. About what they WANNA DO I. It's the draft. You guys have been covered it for a long time and you never know what's going to happen so we played a month longer than everyone else and everyone else's been training a month longer than us you know. I wanted to put. I don't I didn't think I'd be able to put my best foot forward here at the combine so I wanted to wait till pro day had another whole month of training and just be the best that I could be when everyone when. Everyone's eyes are on me. You know coming in. If you're the number one pick the teen is picking number one. Is there for a reason? So you're going to have to come in. There's going to be ups and downs and you've got to stay steady through the process. Our research tells us about Joe. Borough is his own man. He's not going to be talked into saying things for other people's benefits so if that's what he said. That's that's fantastic. I'm looking forward to getting to know him getting to meet him through. The process haven't been able to sit down with them yet. But we've got that on the horizon. We'll talk more about Joe. Boroughs plans to hold off throwing here at the combine. But might I'll start with you in terms of do you want? Do you not want to play for the being. You have any issues at all with where we landed at least at this point. No I mean as I said last week Joe Borough at the end he does not have leverage. The bengals have the first pick in the draft. If they want to draft. Joe Joe Borough. That's where he's GonNa go now with that. Said I think it's incumbent upon sack Taylor in the Bengal organization to create the Right Environment. Where he could come in and they could build something sustainable and truly transformative so. I think where we wended. Wendy is appropriate last week. He could've handled that better but to Joe Boroughs credit. I think they tweak things I think they're in a good spot now. He's been well-coached past week. Tower doesn't it. Yeah and Adema to your Do All your contacts. It appears that borough likely young he's projected pick. I still think that's where the bengals ultimately go. And they're sitting there and that's about this a team that needs somebody to revitalize that franchise and they are expected to look to trade Andy Dalton at some point this off season and so when you're sitting there in division with Lamar Jackson there in Baltimore think that they know that they have to get somebody in there. That's going to put some points on the Board Baker Mayfield Cleveland and this is going to be the pick for the Cincinnati bengals. Even Joe was considering trying to exercise some kind of leverage really the only leverage you have is withhold your services and not playing not report even if he was thinking along those lines. Let's say he's doing a deep dive trying to figure out exactly. Just what the Cincinnati offer as far as developing me as a quarterback. Could you blame him? Could you really blame him for wanting to dig? Deep on exactly what? What does the future going to look like during over the course of my rookie contract with this football team would exactly? What exactly is Mike Brown's commitment to go ahead and building out this roster around me because we all know a lot of what's going to happen to him has nothing to do with him and has everything to do with everything that's going to be around him. Just look at the past three or four drafts. And how certain players have benefited from going to certain to certain teams? Just look at l a look at the difference between jar rookie year in his second year. Sean mcvay came in. It flipped his rookie year. People were saying Jared Goff to Canada. All of a sudden his second year is like. Oh wait a minute. Maybe he's not so bad you couldn't blame him. If that was a thought Lewis to that point I also think an opportunity. If you're Zach Taylor to say hey what's happened in the past. It's irrelevant we're going to myself with you and we're going to build something great and we can't worry about what's happened before we have a lot of work to do. But if I'm the bengals if I have a hey coach Taylor. That's worked with quarterbacks. Like you mentioned Jared Goff Joe Boroughs Billy and character. That's a great opportunity for the bengals. Sino three things one. Is that if something were to go on with. The bengals is not going to happen in public and this has been addressed in the past week if it's going to happen behind the scenes so whatever we hear from this point on. Don't even don't even look at it. Don't think about it because it has nothing to do with with what is going on behind the scenes. The second thing is this guy's different cab he beats. It goes a Beatles drummer. He doesn't care what anyone else has done. In the past what everyone else is GonNa do in the future? He's going to do what's best for Joe Borough but the third thing I know about him is he's a football guy he's his. His brothers played linebacker at safety at Nebraska. His Dad's a almost four decades coach in football. He's a football guy at its core. He's from Ohio. Obviously I think when it's all said and done he winds up going in Cincinnati if he's number one overall pick but again. If it's GonNa Happen it's GonNa Happen. Not In the media. It's GonNa happen behind the scenes again. Joe Bro not expected to throw on Thursday. He said he just wasn't ready yet. Not a huge deal. Sam Darnold Kyla Murray. The last two years have opted not to throw here at the combine as well. What did make headlines on Sunday? Oddly enough pros hand measurements the measurable quarterbacks took place on Sunday on the smaller side. Love listen here's what he said after it was suggested his aunt size was small considering retirement after. I was informed that we slipping out of my tiny hands. Please keep me in your thoughts while he's got good company because here's what Super Bowl fifty four. Mvp Patrick Mahomes had to say who had just slightly larger hands than did borough my small Andrew doing great so far all right he should say believe in yet. Here's borough earlier today addressing his hands. Yeah I mean these measurements you can. You can take so much from them if it's a glaring issue on film with turnovers. Yeah it's probably an issue but I didn't have a lot of fumbles or anything like that so I just tried to make a little joke out of it I think it's a non factor I don't get paid to talk about. Measurements and analyze. The measurements like played to play football. So that's what I'm GONNA do. I look we're not gonNA make too much of this question. Well yet about what? They actually do what they're actually measuring here so worry not. We've got a ruler. We've got Louis at. I mean really what you're really trying to do is just trying to measure the expense of someone and they put it down on the ground and you actually hear about guys actually doing hand exercises to stretch their hand as wide as possible although when you're grabbing a football you're actually going to measure from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the Pinky here and this is hard because this is a hard rule and you can't really get good accurate measuring you look tired type by just under nine right. Look I'll give you a non center's Oh that's attention and would have actually done something with my. I mean what's interesting when you watch the tape of Joe Borough? There are situations where people come from behind strip him when he's trying to move up in the pocket and run. I mean that's going to happen if you have nine if you have ten inches so I mean it's not a glaring obvious problem as far as him on the football field and that's why I think it's really. It's just going to be something that will hopefully wind up forgetting about certain the biggest thing is and you know this with all of these drills you know as well. Mike you go back to the tape and you're trying to find something after the fact that says okay. Now I'm going to look specifically at these things so you're gonNA look cold weather rain and then ball security and Joe Boroughs as good as any college quarterback you're ever going to see in the pocket in terms of two hands on the ball and protecting the ball. I saw him in two thousand eighteen the last weekend. In September against Ole Miss. You can go back and watch the tape. My suit was soaking wet when I did the open of that game. It was pouring rain driving rain in anyone who says it doesn't rain in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night is lying to you. Because it poured and he completed seventy two percent of his throws with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in that game. So you go back to the tape and you try to look at these things and what the tape tells you is. He's just fine. You know I had a theory here. I have an interesting experience with hand size so I was forced out in two thousand eight. We were we trade for Brett Farve and just as a fan of sport. I can't wait to go out to the first practice and watch Brett farve throw. There's nothing physically imposing about breath and he goes out there and he's throwing Abe I've ever seen and I ask them like what is the value. Where's this philosophy comes from it? He said you know what Mike I have long fingers and I actually couple of football the way a lot of people throw a softball. I could actually be over the top and that's where I get all my philosophy from just watching my practice. It was unbelievable to watch though. I know as Lewis show. There's a tradition of how we measure hands but finger. Length is actually an underrated aspect of playing quarterback so far so far small hands but long fingers and you know what my pinky and all the time strong throwing football pictures of the five. It's easily the least important finger in the hand and I can't remember it ever being a big factor. It's all there in the grip. The pinky to me doesn't matter. It's archaic. How we're measuring the quarterback's hand span now with that. Said there's thirty four quarterbacks in the last fourteen years who have been drafted that have had hands of nine inches and smaller and really only two of them had any sort of Sustained Success Ryan. Tannehill is one of them and Jared. Goff is the other. That's it so there are thirty two out of thirty four. Who have failed. But are we going to say that he's going to the Joe Boroughs? Not GonNa have success because his hands tells me that the reason for their failure wasn't because they were nine inches weight.

Wacky Khakis: Mind Games

"Hello and welcome to pants on fire. I'm Deborah Goldstein. And for the record I am not and have never been affiliated with the United United Order of Holy Depres must be thinking of another Denver. Okay anyway here with me as always to play. Wacky Khakis is our sound affects robot. Lisa whose name stands for live in-studio audience. How about you play as one of your classic Sound Effects Lisa in these are you by any chance a member of the United Order? Uh No I wish chosen. Lisa's of the Oracle. Better chance. Okay you know I could ask more about these a strange spiritual societies. You've made up. But I think the less I know the happier I'll be instead. Would you please explain how we play. Wacky Khakis sure. Turn turn away from the truth. It's your loss Deborah. I think I can live with that on. Every installment of went Khakis Deborah and each tell one crazy story about the world one of breath is actually true and the other one is a lie off the job of a human child to tell which is which and here to referee. Wacky Khakis is our producer. No albaro pleasure Bro. Good to be here. You need a whistle Noah. Thanks Lisa I'm really not that kind of tell you what I'll let you know if I do need a wish. Okay Lisa do you think perhaps you could just go ahead ahead and introduce today's can read. I'm afraid I'm going to have to introduce this week's contestant are human child contestant Zohar Laura from the teeth episode and joining her Serena who will be on the mushroom episode comes Laura. Welcome Serena Art. I tell you guys doing today so hard you were just on our teeth. Episode is that right and Serena you're going to be on. Our Mushrooms was episode. Is that correct. Yeah and that's because you're a huge fan of mushrooms again question. What did they ever do to you? What they did was they be very slightly? Yeah awesome stopping so slimy. You're listening knock it off okay. It's time to play Wacky Khakis. Deborah and Lisa will each have a minute and change to tell their stories. We've flipped a coin. And and unfortunately Lisa vaporized it with his laser but he said it was probably going to be tales totally tells Lisa has chosen to go first our topic. This week is mind games. You're ready Lisa. I was made for this moment. Okay listen carefully Serena and Zahara your timer. Mr Will Begin now. tetris is one of the oldest and most famous video games in the world. It goes like this one by one. A A series of differently shaped blocks dropped from the top of the screen to the bottom and you have until it falls to guide it into place. If you aligned blocks in a perfect perfect horizontal row that row disappears and you get a point so on and so forth until the tower of shapes reach the top of the screen and then it is game over one morning. tetris is super over addictive. If you don't pay attention you could wind up playing it for hours on end in fact the addictive nature. tetris has been studied by psychologists just and they've discovered that people who play the game for long enough or sometimes start to see tetris blocks falling in their mind's eye even when they're not playing anymore others fall asleep at the game still going on in their heads or look at groceries on a shelf and start immediately trying to imagine fitting them as Tetris blocks. This strange phenomenon is known as the town. TAT's backed the game is so addictive that the Creator Alexi NAF had trouble making a final version. Why you asked? Because he couldn't stop playing the prototype. The addictive nature of Tetris also gave rise to a new programming invention venture called the Bosque. When your boss walks by your desk you hit the key which pauses the game and pulls up a fake spreadsheet to make it look like like? You're working fools Deborah every time and time. Well Done Lisa except I'm not sure it was such a good idea to to tell us about the boss key right in front of Debra. Yeah Lisa what. I'm not blind tetris. I'm playing spreadsheet. Well Serena's Ohara. What did you think of of Lisa Story? It was good. I guess unbelievable kind of kind of not okay. Well now it's time for Deborah's mind game story. You're ready Deborah. Let's do this. Your timer will begin now. Okay have you never heard of the game the game. Well you just lost the game and so did I. That's how the game works. If you think about the game you lose the game. That's the only rule. It's kind of a stupid game but also brilliant because once you think of something. You can't not think of it here try. I'm not thinking about the game. I'll give you a moment. You just lost the game again. The origins of the game are unknown but it reached it's peak popularity in two thousand nine when the game developer Hasbro arranged company-wide sweepstakes to see which of its employees could win the game for a prize of one hundred thousand dollars. The setup was a force a paradigm whoever tried to claim the prize would necessarily have to admit that they had I thought about the game and so the company figured it would never have to give up the money. This ended a contentious lawsuit in which the Games disputed winner sued Hasbro for the one hundred thousand dollars they had promised and actual court transcripts from the trial goes as follows judge. How can your client contend that she has won the game if thinking thinking about the game me and she loses the game defense? My France has not thinking about the game. Your honor judge. How could you not be thinking about the game if she is pursuing a lawsuit regarding the game defense? My client is thinking only about the lawsuit not about the Game Judge Council. How did your client hire you for this case without ever mentioning the game? Defense Harden your honor. I just lost the game and time. Nice Work Deborah thank you I just lost the game to the and so did you Serena end so did use. O'hara what did you think of that story about the game. Sound a little relief full. Yeah Yeah it sounded a little more believable than Lisa's back. Okay Serena and Zahara. It's decision time time for you you to decide who told you the truth and who tried to play you. Do you believe Lisa's tale of the tetris. Effect and how psychologists discovered an addictive computer game name stays in our head even after we're done playing or Deborah Story of the game and the ensuing legal battle over whether anyone could actually claim to win. I believe so. Why do you believe my story is true? I think you're sure is true because it. It sounded more believable that that would actually happen other than Lisa's. Lisa's story. About how you keep trying to play the game even if you're not playing the video game heart heart that doesn't sound like it's believable. Yeah not really so there was just nothing about Lisa. That convinced you. That was true. I will give you cotton candy and like not even Cook Con Candy just like the raw and you can try to bribe Rybeck until Bride Cotton Candy Anyway disgusting. It is bribing okay. Fine Yeah no more bribing so hard. You agree that my story sounded more believable. Es Why do you think that It's because the game team. It actually happened at my school. A law ally that actual game. Yeah well not what the money thing though but like trick people into losing it like they'd be like okay. So here's how this game works. And then the other person would not stop thinking about the game Suzanne. They they lose the game and everybody at my school did that so I just know trio okay. Well we'll the real truth teller of today's Wacky Khakis. Please reveal who you are. You're the true truth time what it. That's right Isa was telling the truth. This time with his story of the tetris effect now checked us by being totally Honest that's not a trick that is one of my assets. That's a treat. Yeah so so deborah the game is a real thing right right but there was never a court case over someone writing a claim from winning it. Yeah that was all made up and you know what this is my first time ever as the liar on the game I'm show and I kinda rocked it. How does it feel I? I'M NOT GONNA lie kind of felt. Good sorry kids. I'm just so good it all the time. I'm always telling the truth. That felt fine. I feel alive

Hasbro’s poor earnings report tells a trade war story

"The calendar proper says it's fall all the counter according to Wall Street says it's earning season and in general corporate America's doing alright that sentiment however does not extend to Hasbro the third quarter was not kind the toymaker reported profits of this morning that we're well below estimates of earnings news that is actually the story of the trade war in miniature three of tariff announcements and delays and the chaos that makes it one company just ahead of its most important season marketplace's Merrill Sagarra tells the tale in the Toy Business Chris Miss Comes in the summer that's when retailer start stocking up getting shipments of toys from Hasbro and other manufacturers they can buy those toys directly from Hasbro in the US were they can import the toys from Hasbro factories the retailer buys the product from them in China the retailer puts it on their own ship you know there's a lot mark target the big guys and they ship it to the US themselves that's Linda Bolton Wiser managing director at Da Davidson? She says a lot of retailers do this because it's cheaper they get discounts is an economy of scale but the calculation was different this summer retailers were staring down a deadline September first that was when new tariffs were supposed to go into effect on toys and lots of other stuff coming from China tariffs the retailers did not want to pay therefore if you're a retailer between June and July August you're saying Oh my God we have to change the order retailers started cancelling their shipments from China they told Hasbro to import the toys itself and tariffs to Hasbro had to scramble they had the rush around and get whatever freight on the ocean from China and they had to pay more you're but those tariffs everyone was freaking out about they didn't go into effect in September in August the trump administration delayed them until mid December to save the holiday. being season but that didn't help Hasbro the toys have already been put on the bow it takes six weeks on the boat so it's too late you can't switch it back you know and that's the problem it's not just the tariffs it's the whole on again off again thing the uncertainty Garrick Johnson is equity research analyst at B. M. O. Capital markets uncertainty is often worse than bad news because you do assume the worst and not knowing how to plan especially for very seasonal business has been very different old and this won't be the end of it for Hasbro because those tariffs are still slated to go into effect on December fifteenth unless they don't I'm Maryelle Sagarra for marketplace

"Collector scale beit masterpiece or transformers or the legacy line from power rangers i'm very curious to see what's going to happen i can't see hasbro shutting out the collectors but hasbro primarily markets the kids it just so happens that hasbro toys that are built for collectors are some of them are pretty cool for kids like you look at some of these titans return figures those marketed towards lake in a sense like us midmarket basically hasbro has like three different tiers they have like the very simplistic designs they have the ones that are geared towards their more adultish series i'm michelle obama and then they hit linked or masterpiece line and then whatever happens to come out in between like for for the films and for timelines of universe kind of his legacy figures and the they have the many moving parts going on between them depending on what's going on in the media so it'll be interesting to see what they do as far as the toys with with them producing them incident bain donate vandamme co or whatever it is the company that produces them but the other thing too is we could end up seeing a more kid like more kid friendly in a more adult version of power rangers kind of further separating the lines of what we have now yeah i mean if you told me they would produce something that was equal to their legacy line but something a little bit more adultish ib all four like if you told me they could produce a trying to think what might be really good.

"Well you see i'm one of the things i'm very curious about how the crossover with other franchises i guarantee you there will be a power rangers transformer crossover at sandia comecon if they're smart there will be dino combined colored in the mega colors because that's a nobrainer and that's just a recruiter retool now see bino dealing i would see that happening is in comic form well that's another interesting thing too because currently most of the hasbro licenses are at idee w but boom comics has gogo power rangers and mighty morphin powering right now but who knows how long that license has been has been signed for yes so i'm curious to see what will happen with that because i w like i said has transformers my little pony internals ninja turtles oh no that is playmates not hasbro but they w has ninja turtles yeah so i'm curious to see what will come out of this now seeing transformers crossover with powering to me seems like a no brainer i guarantee a we'll see something mocked up by twenty fair next february guaranteed also if you would have put a ranger helmet on my little pony figure guaranteed sell some ponies that way like if you had pinkie pie up as the pink ranger that sells itself virtually why they're so many possibilities to cross brammer twin boys and girls now they can expand the the brand out i'm curious to see what it means for other toil lines like for example hasbro owns nerf if you told me i could get a mighty morphin blade blaster that shoots little nerf dirt's or like when they have beast more fers i'm there's gonna be parring nerf guns i assure you that we are injured nerf weaponry like probably the power sword and all that stuff from mighty morphin or whatever that would be a no brainer honestly with that that's like there's so much stuff you're plus hasbro's animation most of the original mighty morphin cast is still around and still active doing stuff if you told me if you wanna make money you make a net flicks or whatever series animated you do boom comics shattered grid if you did that in animated form with as many people as you can get obviously you can't get.

"Yeah yeah if they produce shattered grid as a netflix series or even as a one shot animated movie or something like that i'd be down for that i would love to see it as a as a netflix series honestly i mean they're so much money to be made there or if like hasbro could like i said adapt so many things from it or i'm curious to see where they'll take beast more i what toys will come out of that because you know those toys are already being tooled up right now i know they're still casting the show right now but you know zords arrayed ago the action figures that don't show the actress faces are already being tooled so i imagine we'll see product get hasbro at least in my experience you always see toys being leaked a few months before fair you'll see hasbro power toys leaked probably in the next couple of months if not sooner in that's that's one of the wonderful things about hasbro's a lot of that information comes out sooner just because the hasbro fan base of whatever tweet franchise that they have is practically all over it when it comes to any kind of news that comes out of that company and i mean they're one of the biggest toy retailers in the in the world i mean you got mattel in there too but i mean those are pretty much the two juggernauts and mattel they hold a portion of the power and his license but i guess they don't anymore because they had the imagine x megastore dragonzord and the white tigers or so i guess that licenses now reverted the hasbro i guess i'm not entirely sure on that but i knew that bandai namco had.

"The one office here uh but sometimes you just need to grow or don't have a longterm plan settled on yet uh looks like they're putting it together longterm plan to get everybody in into one building if they can pull it off hasbro had as you said has made overtures to mattel add that mattel has resisted to this point a year from now do you think this deal has gone through because and and i don't have a dog in this fight but i i i'm not really sure if i should be rooting for this merger or not uh presumably if the price is right than that works out well for mattel shareholders but i don't know i kinda like that there's the competition out there and i also like to see new ceos get a chance to turn the company around in and that's the case of mattel i mean the ceos been there less than a year and i feel like she should have a chance to i don't know implement her vision for what success looks like a mattel well so mattel just the other day dago reported that uh it is anticipating a disappointing holiday season and while as one might imagine the holiday season is kind of kind of important for a toy maker and hasbro's made no such a announcement and i think that mattel this is another in an ongoing series of disappointing announcements from mattel and i think when you ask uh you know can i speculate will this be done in a year from today hasbro's a wellrun company they're not gonna overpay uh did they've made a and offering mattel's rejected it but if mattel thinks they're going to get more money they may be right but it they think they're gonna get more money than they're worth uh i think they're wrong and i think that there.

"All air hogs that garang create the the tv shows in the movies and then the characters in the games to go along with it on also owners of sketch an you know for some throwback games but a unique keep growing imagination of these kids trying to compete with ipads and things like that but certainly a long tail uh trend that were big fan seven in the canadian market we've chosen to go a spin master uh in that regard this move by hasbro doesn't surprise me it would surprise me if it was the reverse just because uh margo george janas who's the ceo at mattel she got there in january and everything i've read about her uh just sort of struck me as okay this is this is certainly an upgrade in the corner office at mattel and i just figured give her at least a year maybe even two years before you too as we would any c itoh so if this was a move by metab by her and her board that would surprise me i think has railways smart to make this move now in this regard that they might look at her and think pay before she gets a chance to really impact the culture number of things of this might be the weakest point they're going to get as long as she there she's there so let's go now yeah and the enemy chicoms from google so she has certainly i think positive exposure on the culture side certainly a tech background that can help mattel at this point so yeah i think you're right in that they're looking at mattel right now as a company that is uh down but not out in in it doesn't mean that they can't turn this renningen they do have some popular brands out there but they have put themselves in a bit of a bind up financially in in in again when you look at i mean this is a business that is one hundred percent lever to the consumer any retail environment that is just really scary right now in in they have they they have not made the investments in technology that they've needed to make a whereas hasbro has up so again you either adding hasbro's probably looking at mattel seen a company in a position of weakness they certain.

"You you have mattel the digits clearly it up the company in a position of weakness in that didn't happen overnight right i mean honestly this was set up by former leadership binding brian stockton a was a bigger part of the problem probably you know some people like to admit but he was he was fired for reasons i mean it routed even question as to whether he was fired initially abut but aj actually did commencing up he was fired you know he just he wasn't getting done end up i mean there was a culture problem the company certainly it it it seemed that they were failing to innovate at a pace up which kept them up with sort of the changes that technology is is implemented on the market in the enemy not i'm not saying it's easy ride emanates not clearly it's not in them but that's what you get paid big bucks for the can't do it than you need to step aside conversely when you look at hasbro i mean they have really been investing a lot in in sort of finding new ways to uh leverage there ip their toy properties through partners like disney um i i think that really the loss of that disney deal from its l was sort of the beginning of the end if this deal happens that's great honestly though the thing is i am i really am not convinced that hasbro needs this headache i mean at the end of the day it gives them some valuable property some valuable brands but i mean mattel is a mess of a company i mean there there are culture problems there are financial problems i mean there's a point now where this debt is you can't ignore it i mean operating income doesn't even cover their interest expense a threetimes over this point so it could be a lot of headaches if it has burt assad staked his own yeah this is one space we really like in stock of utter care would just recommended uh 'cause i can better spin master which owns brands such as popovich.
