Elliott races into NASCAR championship; Harvick eliminated

"The field is set for NASCAR's championship for next week to battle for the Cup series title at Phoenix Raceway but getting there required the sport's most popular driver chase Elliott to punch his ticket with a win at Martinsville speedway and that's exactly what he did to win a championship in this series you have to make the final four we see the same crowd make the final four since this deal's been implemented and we want to assert ourselves amongst the people who can make it consistently L. it was outside the cut heading into the action but he dominated the race leading two hundred thirty six of five hundred laps Elliott joins Kansas race winner joined lagana along with Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin in the championship hunt Kevin Harvick who won nine races in twenty twenty just missed the final round I'm Jerry Jordan

Kansas Speedway Starting Lineup: October 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

"Series rat of eight kicks off this weekend at Kansas despite other media members thinking it's more and other weird stuff. These are the drivers that are going to battle it out for four spots over the next three races Kurt Busch Alex, Bowman Martin tricks junior joey logano chase Elliott Brad Keselowski Denny Hamlin, and Kevin Harvick bloom that is a star studded pack of drivers there for sure. So eight races will be pared down to four for Phoenix. which is going to be the round of four, which is only one race I guess but I mean look at look at that lineup, you've got one, two, three, four, five champions. You've got the guy who's the perennial second place Cinderella story that never gets it done at any Hamlin the most popular driver and Chase Elliott, and then Alex Bowman as well. The future forty-eight drivers. That's pretty cool and we've got a great mix of manufacturers. Yeah. Yeah. No joke I mean we've got a pretty good representation of everything here. We got to Chevy's two toyotas. Fords right that were at. I see in three three chevys. Sorry. Three Chevy Chevy three forwards and two Toyotas. That's pretty good. especially when you consider how few Toyotas are in the field. That's that's par for the course you're only gonNA get two of them in there but that's that's a pretty impressive field of drivers for this. Finally, all right Kansas speedway opened in two thousand and one it's bad fast on the list of top ten fastest tracks, which is a weird list. Drivers, of course, have to dodge rows and rows of corn and wheat growing right there on the racetrack in between the workers and the cracks. would. That might not be true.

Kevin Harvick wins Bristol night race

"Winning the second round of NASCAR's playoffs, holding off Kyle Busch at Bristol Motor Speedway for his serious leading night victory The season he denied the reigning Cup series champ. He's first win of the season made it a little too tight through the center of the corner, but turned into a heck of a race in and out of traffic there with Kyle. He got me. Gabi once pinned up there in traffic and Was able TTO do the same thing back and and then hold the lead there there till the end, so just really proud of everybody, that they for everything that they've done all year and just continuing to fight, And there's not many races that you can win, or like like women here in Bristol Night race, so That was. That was a lot of fun.

Kevin Harvick talks about every racer's dream

"Week's Pocono winner and last year's Indianapolis winner. Kevin Harvick talks about every racers dream for for me. Indianapolis is is is is a place for that I grew up as a kid. You know wanting to raise indy cars add so it's be able to go there and actually compete and win is fulfilling. Your childhood dreams so. Every time I go to indy look forward to driving in that tunnel, and and you know I. Think as as you look at this weekend. one of the parts that will actually miss his driving in that tunnel. All practices going or something is on the racetrack. Because there's there's really nothing more special to me than than in being able to you know. Think back to the things that you did as. As a kid and wanting to to go there and rates one day, and so winning last year was was really special, and you know having hyper there, and my my whole family there, and having those pictures, or are you know one of the one of the coolest things that that all have when when my racing career is over so India's a is a special place for me and I enjoy. Coming back each year to to show up and company, how his strategy playing a role without practice or qualifying for the most part we, we've talked about it before the race enduring the race, I typically just let them handle it just because they have way more information, but in from the driver standpoint. It's it's a little bit more stressful because you aren't really around the cars all the time that you're racing and you know that if you give up a little bit here to give up a little bit air, you don't know how much they give free traffic or Coming back through the field or what strategy there on so from driver's standpoint, it's a little more stressful and you know you have to push every lap in order to make sure you get the most out to give up the least amount of time, so it's just A. It's a different style race, which is good, right you, you know you have all these different elements play in different styles of race tracks said that you know the same style and element that play and all the other racetracks so. It's actually more stressful in my opinion. Because you yarn, you can't judge it off a car that is around you at somewhere else on the racetrack, but it all cycles

NASCAR reveals changes for short tracks

"There's a new short-track package in use this weekend. And for more on that here's them. Rn's Kyle rigging while a lot of attention this week at Phoenix. We'll be focused on the championship race. Being moved there and what teams can learn from this race. That will apply later this year. There's another change at Phoenix. A new short-track package debut in for the first time in twenty twenty Stewart Haas racing. Eric Merola is up for trying. Anything that will help. Make the short track racing better. I think it could make a lot of difference. I think it certainly could make the racing. Better I I. I feel like Nascar really achieved a pretty good package for the intermediates to where it's a lot more racy the car. The car's are closer together the competitions tighter and so now on the short-track count lost that. We had that with the two thousand eighteen package where the races were awesome. And we were you know. We're racing side by side and passing the lead and all that and then as we got more downforce The cars were more gripped up to the race track and and then it was a little bit more challenging to pass this year so I feel like the marriage of the two. Now we're having the high downforce high drag on the intermediates but then the low downforce on the short tracks is really going to be good For our season and for those short track races teammate. Kevin Harvick echoes those feelings and says this could help S. HR dramatically whether the tires changed a little bit since two thousand eighteen Very similar to what we had in two thousand eighteen. That was a great year for us at Stewart racing. And and you know for US. We have a different car even been. Finley had in two thousand eighteen with with the Mustang now. So you know there are everybody's got differences chevrolets got a new car Toyota's probably the only one that got that. Got The same car but you know there are enough changes. That's going to be different but I think with the lower downforce obviously with higher downforce. I don't I think it's pretty common knowledge at this point that everybody knew we needed a change on the short tracks for us. That's a good thing because I felt like short track program in our road for stuff was probably the report of what we had last year. So you know I think as as we go forward You know I think there's a lot of things that point to a lot of bright spots for us is that could be positive but like you say you never know until you get into it. But I think it's GonNa it's definitely going to create better racing. What we had last year. T. May in rookie. Contender sole customer is hoping the package makes the cars closer to what the extremity cars were like. Yeah me I'm looking forward to the short tracks. The changes that they made probably for the aero side of it is GonNa help the racing a lot from what it seems like from last year but at the same time. I mean it's still going to be a little bit new to me but It'll be closer to what the extremely cars were last year. So I think I'm really looking forward to that and seem you know what the short-track package is going to be like. I think it's it is something that could probably depth a little bit better to sentence probably gone meal. The more simple Kurt Busch breaks down. Why getting the racing right at short tracks is such a big deal. The easiest way for fans to digest it as at at the short tracks where we have less speed have hardly any downforce so the slower the track the more we're going to be sliding around the faster the track the more the cars are going to stick other than Daytona Talladega. That's different RESTRICTOR PLATE. Rules there so just think of it size of track the smaller the more they're going to be slip sliding around. Just it's GONNA keep us jumping around a lot and I love to see the same rule package work at all tracks but it just won't put on good show that we need to have the side by side is if the short-track package produces the desired effect. Phoenix race. Fan should be in for a treat. Come Sunday

NASCAR America Motormouths: Carmichael recaps Daytona 500 Newman crash

"Five Times supercross champion and NBC analysts. Ricky Carmichael had the best seat in the House for that one. He joins US now on motormouth. Ricky I'M GONNA get to bikes in a bit but I wanna ask you about this past weekend you were in Daytona as an honorary official. And I know you've talked about Ryan Newman's wreck on your podcast. You've seen and been a part of crazy accidents even so what were your thoughts. You've taken back by what you saw was and I was glad he's okay. Just incredible the turn of events to see him walking out. Yesterday was definitely special and Man. I was thinking about him. I met Ryan through Kevin Harvick when I was driving for cage. I in two thousand nine and we've kept in touch ever since then. Everybody knows his sense of humor. Is is so fun. He's a great guy to be around so I was really concerned. Hated seeing that. And you know it's just daytona an all racing really. It can happen anywhere so I was concerned but at the same time I was so relieved to see the outcome yesterday. And hopefully he's going to be all good. I now we all breathe a sigh of relief. And you talk about that sense of humor. Sometimes I don't know fans get to see that but yeah he's a very a very funny guy so I'm glad you brought that up those crazy accidents though I talked about you having well. They've been on both lakes and in the NASCAR TRUCK SERIES. You mentioned driving out at number four for hi and back to back years at Daytona. I think two thousand nine and two thousand ten. What were your thoughts? I think you had some some some hits there at Daytona. It and the truck. Of course I of course I did. They weren't they weren't that bad. I was very lucky but I loved racing. They're a loved racing at Daytona whether it was two wheels four wheels. I was really excited to be able to raise four wheels there. Because you know my history there five-time Daytona supercross champ and to to be able to race at Daytona. Four wheels at a pretty high level race. There two thousand and ten. I believe it was so it was special. Just because I'd had so much success here on two wheels to be able to experience that racetrack on four wheels was something that I'll never forget. I'm so grateful for that opportunity but It's fast things happen fast. I always tell people you don't really know how fast you're going until something goes wrong and then when something goes wrong you're like oh man I really. There's a lot of speed here but I applaud NASCAR for what they do in the racetracks and making them as safe as they possibly can be. And that's what I really respect about about NASCAR so you kind of get comforting feeling a little bit when you get in get in those roll cages them race cars a little bit different compared to motorcycles as you know yeah had in my notes xfinity race in Daytona. Two thousand eleven. So yeah you were close but yeah you also know about comebacks to. I think it was a crash in a torn. Acl that kept you out of the two thousand four supercross season. You came back with a perfect run outdoors you want all twenty four motos. Obviously we don't know about Ryan's road to recovery or his future plans but can you talk about the mind of an athlete. What you went through mentally to to come back and then to come back even stronger. Yeah for me. It was. It was almost a blessing in disguise. I mean as you know Chris. I was at it for a while and competing competing at a high level winning championships at a high level. I think that that came at a great time. It kind of put things into perspective. It was a nice break at a four month. Break of just basically re having training doing all that stuff and it gave me the motivation and the the want again that. I wanted to go out there and race and finish out. The last three years of my career came at a perfect time. It wasn't ideal but it really boosted the next three years for me and so if you look at Ryan you know. Everybody knows that. He's strong and he feels like he's not done yet and he hasn't made it left the mark that he wants to racing then. I fully support it. He's very intelligent person. So I know that he'll make the right move and decision that is best for him and his family but he just has to believe in himself believe in himself his team and at the drive is still there then then I'm in support of of his his comeback. And you know anything can happen. You certainly fascinate. Had No reason. He can't be throughout the rest of the season.

He was the son of two-time Cup series champion and Nascar Hall of fame driver but Baker at six foot six inches tall but he could have gone into any number of sports but racing was in his blood. His father buck wasn't always sure that he would become a racecar driver as he described during a nineteen eighteen seventy five race broadcast. That's right he Barney when he started out he would sit in the grandstand his fingers in his ears and he didn't even like the sound of automobile. Automobiles you know and I we started out and I got an old car and and Afra Deg on your bankrupt myself Surapon and begin to see where he looked like. He has some potential. You know people come along and civil. Oddly sport go make it and then there you go and he popped up one day and told me Said Dad you know. "Owner definitely hall of fame worthy one of those championships was with Kevin Harvick. And he's standing by with our woody gain so Kevin Tony Stewart in the hall of fame. Finally and I don't think right now. There are many more deserving guys still out there. Why does Tony Stewart belong in the hall? Well I I tell people a lot when they ask about Tony Stewart and and you know his Nascar career in the things. He's meant to our sport. It's really not about NASCAR. I know this is about. The Nascar are hall of fame. But you know I think the part that makes Tony so unique is the fact that he covers so many different areas of racing and has given back to so many pieces of of the racing world You look at the race tracks that he owns and the things that he does You know in the sprint cars and the race teams at he owns he owes an RC. Car Team He's raised indy cars. He's raced anything else that you can think of at least probably once or twice to to experience it and in probably one. And he's been in Iraq champion Indycar Champion Cup champion. So you know I think for for me. It's it's Tony the racer That makes him so special. SCHOL obviously Going into the Nascar Hall of fame. He's had a great career here Winning three championships and now on the team owners side has has has won a couple of championships with with Jean And you know for for me. I've been on both sides of with with Tony Driving for Tony Tony. Having Tony Drive for dining I in xfinity cars and experience all the all the races that he was was able to win from being the driver driver and and me sitting on the ownership side. But I would still tell you that the thing that makes the guy the most unique is the thing that probably made him. The happiest in the most most proud was winning. Go Kart race at my house. You know We went on Ebay and we bought a trophy for ninety nine cents. And you know he he. He told that thing around all week and he put it in the front of this bus in front of the shades so everybody could see it all weekend and to really just rub it in your face and that was that was. That's who Tony Stewart is. He's the guy that wants to win whether it's a go kart race in your backyard at your house or it's a Nascar Cup series championship kinship. And that's what makes them great. Twenty twenty season is here right around the corner. You've won a ton of racist. been a champion but you still get that Oh boy feel when you go back to Daytona five hundred every year. Does it still make some butterflies for you. Well you know. Our sport is so unique with our biggest race being our first race and and with that comes a whole bunch of hype a whole whole bunch of enthusiasm from every team on the grid You know you've got new cars new sponsors new drivers you've got so many things to talk about and not not made a lab and you don't know who's good who's bad and even even when you run the race and it's over with you still know who's good who's bad Because the Daytona five hundred sits by itself its Own Unique weekend. That is our sport's biggest race to win and it's it's There's nothing like sitting in that seat that you experience all year as to leading up to the the green flag at the Daytona five hundred. Because you you take all that enthusiasm and excitement and and leading to that green flag you know that you have an opportunity. Thirty two to win the sport's biggest race You know in in that day so it's It's a great feeling in something that never gets old and and it it still. Oh by far the biggest excitement level that you come into the green flag in in the car all year. Thank you what he coming up next. We'll honor three time. "In twenty seventeen. The motor racing network. Congratulates Bobby Labonte as an inductive of the Nascar Hall of fame. Twenty twenty class glass and bobby. The Bonnie joins us on the phone. Right now welcome back to scar live. Mr Hall of Famer has that sound will sounds pretty. Good You know it's just Like I said before we went on the air. It's amid it's it's it's really really exciting and it's like okay so I'm getting prepared but I'm sure when I get there it'll be a different when you see the car when you see things and talking to people it'd be it'd be different come closer to the weekend but very excited about What's happened you obviously were named into this class of the hall of fame back in May and your career started back in nineteen eighty two in explicity race at Martinsville of? It's taking your thirty eight years to get here. What have you been thinking about? Ever since you found out that you were going to become a Nascar Hall of Famer will I mean it's When when you know when you're racing up and up until years ago of course you don't think about it but I think he just raised your new. Your stuff every every day but since I was kind of putting the pool a couple of years ago and voted in last year. I mean you know the the biggest thing for me is reflecting back and I think that my parents what when all that they did for me and my brother and both of them just You know never wavered from From our racing career. And that's all we thought of and it's all we did you know from the time Terry started racing to the time. I started racing when I was five. I mean we just continued eighteen on. And so when you think about you know after the The selection to be in the hall of fame. You you you kind on a put those times together you know before you you talk about it and you might relive a little bit but now when you start to talk about it more and you save. Somebody asked the question of. How did you get here? Not How does your last week in or what are you GonNa do to fix this weekend. That's what you heard for years right. So how did you get here. And how did you do this. And how that so I think he just reflect back on on fifty years or thirty years of you know racing and You try to put it all together and you think wow I. Can't you know I kinda don't talk about that much but I worked on in this car. I drove that race to expend eraser late model sportsman series and did this for these people and was part of a budweiser pit crew. My first job racing was to cut middle cut Coors Light Middleweight Banners. Off The wall off the walls at hotels Daytona. You know what I mean. Just all this stuff comes together you put it all together other with with it and it just it just likes to real really is man. I can't believe I've done this for that long. For Joe Gibbs racing faithful fans this is is an extra special hall of fame induction ceremony. You obviously got coach going in your teammate. With Tony going in you going in as well. Is that a special Schule for you as it is for a lot of us I I know it is I know especially for us especially for me You know I've got Jimmy Carl. That was instrumental from middle. And and everything you know. Joe Gibbs racing has ever done and he's still there and he was very huge part of success in my career and to know that coach and Tony. You're going at the same meantime and the and the obviously you know Tony it all his accolades and what what he's been able to do there and move on and and still doing and You know it was coach. I mean you just you just never lose touch never lose That feeling of what what we're able to do together and just so I said that if it wants to you know Jimmy make car interstate batteries and to give I wouldn't be here I'd I'd I'd be. I wouldn't be if this position. So you know they they. They you know totally helped me so much so to win a championship and to get to this point. So it's it's it's an unbelievable and I'm sure I'm just GONNA get Just GonNa get more as the as time goes on here but it's it's awesome feeling and it's great great for Joe Gibbs racing and all of us while there are still bobbing the Bonnie fans even to this very day. That still long for you to return to the racetrack here in the states. You've been racing in the NASCAR euro series but they still want to see a backup car and Xfinity even a truck rock. But you've created a lot of memorable moments for a lot of folks and no doubt. That'll be saluted and recognized Friday night when you were inducted into the Nascar Hall of fame on behalf of all of us at motor racing network. We congratulate you for your accomplishments. And thank you for what you've done for the fans and done for the sport as a whole over the course of of is your time and your tenure in the sport Mike I mean I tell you it's been awesome Nascar in my life I really I mean I can't I you know since I was a little kid wanted to race in. NASCAR SCAR was the path and I can remember watching that you're on TV and you know the semi non Daytona five hundred and all that stuff and working race cars. And you know I'm I'm sure I bleed red blood but also bleeds NASCAR and there as well just for the fact that not only did I want to do. I got to do it and I still part of it. "Kevin Harvick is winless, twenty nineteen something he and his team at Stewart Haas racing have on their brain constantly, but every step forward, they find something else that takes multiple steps back really at our place right now, you're, you're kind of reevaluate everything as as we started the season to the wrong direction had been backpedaling trying to get everything. Right. Obviously the speed of the cars, come back and still working on all the details. Very similar to the way that we started two thousand seventeen but they've done a great job in turn in turn the ship around and getting speed back in the cars. And I think the steering box issue is, is obviously a new conversation that you have to look at all the suspension pieces parts. Everything that goes with it every week, where twelve eighteen miles an hour faster through the center of the corner. So he's just a there's a time more load on suspension pieces spindles wheels steering boxes clips, everything that, that. Has to do with the car is under a lot more load. So you have to step back and to me that the learning situation that came out of mistaken boxes is asking the questions about everything else. So obviously that was a topic of conversation. I don't get to in-depth involved in, in the conclusions to those questions. But you have to ask questions building toward the playoffs is presented by court for builders wasted time is wasted money with grow core. All people software data or connected on one platform.
