The Harvey Milk, LGBTQ democratic club in San Francisco held a vigil last night at Castro and market streets to honor the victims who were killed in the Colorado Springs shooting. State senator Scott Weiner spoke at the vigil and said that he is angry that the LGBTQ community is still not safe. Governor Newsom echoed a similar sentiment saying hate is taught. Mill valley police say they are continuing to identify and arrest more people involved in an alcohol fueled massive underage party that resulted in teens throwing beer bottles at officers and stomping on police vehicles. Jeffrey Shelby reports, experts in the field of teen alcohol and drug use, say it's up to parents to send a message to their kids. Police from multiple agencies say they were literally surrounded by the youths this on an otherwise quiet suburban street, the one common denominator they say, underage alcohol use, Melissa wallstrom is with Marin healthy youth partnerships which works to reduce teen substance abuse. While something like this isn't quite the norm, having 200 use rioting in the situation. But high rates of drinking in our youth is something that's been going on for a long time here in Marin. Wall Street says reducing underage substance use and abuse begins with parents. Do I want to send that message that every event needs to be about alcohol? And when I'm with my kids, do I need it to be around alcohol. So starting with the parents and how we model behavior, I think would really go along way because they're always watching. Our kids are always watching, even when they're young. Three suspects were detained, the parents of one teen were sighted under the social host ordinance. College students who are stressed out at finals might do well to pet a Llama. That's right. Several colleges, including UC Berkeley, have discovered that petting a Llama alleviates a lot of anxiety around finals time. That's why the university of the Pacific and Stockton invited George Caldwell of sonora to their campus with a handful of his llamas, the students love it. The idea started back in 2014 when Caldwell took some of his llamas to people's park in Berkeley to share some Llama love with locals. John Zmirak: America Is Patty Hearst

"Talk about the piece that you wrote behind you. People who watch this on video can see behind you the image of a young Patty Hearst, symbiote, the symbionese Liberation Army in the 70s when we were kids kidnapped her. She was of extremely wealthy heiress. And people who are younger wouldn't know this, but something happened. Her captors sort of brainwashed her into thinking the way they were thinking. So that she sided with the people who tortured and raped and kidnapped her. And it's called Stockholm syndrome. And you've written a piece that's streamed dot org that deals with that. So go ahead and tell us about that piece. Yeah, Patti Hearst was grabbed by a bunch of San Francisco radicals of the kind that formed Kamala Harris, Willie Brown was the political mentor of Kamala Harris. He was also the political mentor of Harvey Milk, the gay activist and the reverend Jim Jones, the left wing cult leader who started that compound in Guyana and got everyone to take cyanide and drink in the Kool-Aid. This ferment, this world of crazed radicalism is what gave birth to the woke movement, which currently dominates the entire Democratic Party and is being posed on the United States.

"I missing the point here? I was quite shocked about this because he did win the Oscar for playing milk. Remember that amazing movie? Yes. About the out gay man in politics, Harvey Milk in San Francisco. It was the amazing movie. And he was married to Madonna. You think of Sean Penn as somebody as having very liberal attitudes towards the staff and it appears that no, he's really angry about it. I just think it's wild. And to me, why does Sean payo a care enough? And then be care enough to come out and make a public statement about it. I love that expression, where is it? What did she say? A gibbering fool. And then she goes, MF, which means we use your vocabulary. You used to be sexy, but now you're just tragic. I think she's hitting the nail on the head here too. I don't find people sexy who are gibbering fools. No doubt. I find someone's attitude the way they feel about other people. That's what turns me on more maybe than even the way you look Sean Penn, you should be a naughtiest of the day, but we're not yet in that part of the show. So let's keep going. Hey, this is a lovely story before we go to break. Harry prince Harry has organized a special Zoom call for all the royal cousins. So Harry might not be able to return to Britain because of safety concerns for a while, but he's decided this is no excuse for the cousins to not get to know each other. So he set up a very, very special Zoom call. It had Archie on a little bit on and also it had catan Williams children and George and Charlotte and livy they've not met each other as a big group. I think this is lovely. So although we know that Harry and his brother, William, they certainly have issues, they're not going to let their relationship there, toxic relationship, affect their children, their kids, their babies, and so they're all jumping on a Zoom together. I think this must be so much fun. Could you put your feelings to one side as a parent to let the children enjoy one another? I would hope that people out there could because the kids are just so young and they need to know each other because family sometimes is all you got. Cousins, as you grow up, you need people there in your life. So George and lily bet they could be besties. I'm not an extraordinary life they all have. They're all royals like they've got something to bind them together that most other families don't have. There are very few people in the world who are going to grow up with those circumstances. It's almost like how pop stars become friends with other pop stars because it's such an unusual life they live only other people in the same boat so to speak, can understand. I think this is lovely and you know what? I'm told from my sources that the children might actually help grow peace for the parents, isn't that wild that the children are the ones acting like adults here, but if something good comes out of this, I think it is just.

"You know of her, she's a brilliant man. That story with the original 6 person? Yeah. And Brad brandy's great because what I saw what love about her is that she's a librarian who became a reporter who reports on the worst of conspiracy theorists and awful things. But she's still a librarian. I love that combination. And she's very good at it. She had a really good story. She spent a year on, not like The New York Times. As far as they eat in Panera, this is somebody who tried to really understand what was going on in his head. Somebody who got up to the steps of the capitol on January 6th and then said no. This is true. What happened to that process? This is from NBC. Escape from QAnon. How January 6th changed one person's path. The guy changed his mind, places like that. She makes the point. There's no one source. It's not like, oh, Facebook, that it turned out Facebook is okay, or turn off away and everything's okay. No, it feeds it's a whole bunch of stuff that feeds in. Media have a major role here. And once he was primed to believe crazy stuff, he's his first one was the pizza conspiracy and Hillary Clinton. Could be. And once he was down that rabbit hole, there was nothing but down toward the center of the earth to go. And a lot of things push him there. And so OAN has to have a large audience. His experience I've had that experience when you're in a mob in my case it was any Vietnam protests in the 70s. But when you're in a mob and he talks about, he says, I saw their eyes change. You know when somebody gets really angry and you just feel like they're going to go nuts. I feel like I was watching people get radicalized. And that's what happens in a much more mellow anti moratorium marches Lee. What kind of nasty marches were you in? We were all trying to save the world. Well, we thought we were trying to save the world. But in particular, one. In the mining of high fond harbor, do you remember that when we mined the harbor? It was in Santa Cruz. I was in high school still. And somebody decided we should march down ocean street and block the highway exit, go out and block highway one O, or highway one, I guess it was. And I have a vivid memory of this. I was carrying a vietcong flag. In fact, I believe, in case anybody wants to keep me from running for president, you'll find a picture of the front page of the Santa Cruz sentinel of me holding a vietcong flag. I thought, well, there goes my political career. But oh, shucks. But. I didn't think this was a good idea. I thought this was just going to piss people off. But you get swept away by it. And then they started rocking cars. And I could see how you slowly gradually. Escalate, and then the next thing you do is you set a car on fire. If you're angry enough, and it doesn't take that's the point is maybe it's only 10% of the crowd, but it spreads. It's in fact the Harvey Milk. You get angry. I for Dan white. There was this going, yes, yes, I saw that. Yeah. I was talking to moratorium marsh that was very mellow. Oh, I went to all the teachings in the mellow things. I did that too, you know. I'm going to take off 6 period. I'm going to a teaching up.

Just it was horrendous Just verandas and i remember freezing and just being unable to move or speak just the horror of it was so overwhelming and then i thought well it's all over now you know it's all over and were done and we were allowed to leave. We have to sit in his office. He was shot in. Dan white's office across the away. And we had to sit in there while they bundled up the bodies and got them out and we found the tape that harvey had last when he predicted his assassination. And i knew he made the tape. And i used to make fun of them. Is it important enough to get shot. No you're not jfk. You're not dr king. You're not malcolm x. Nobody's going to shoot you. just nothing. it's just all over and i felt very I know it sounds selfish. But i just felt so personally defeated this guy. I saw something in. He was probably the first adult to tell me. I had value. Just as i was and i didn't need to change and i didn't need to be this or that i could just be me and be useful and i just thought. Oh it's all over miss just all over. And then the sun went down and people began to gather on castro street and we were gay and straight young and old and lack and round and wide and immigrant and native born. And we'd let those candles and imagine many people hearing this story remember it were. I've seen the footage and when we got civic center and phil that plaza with all the lights are candles. "Was it during that time when you had first gotten there so I mentioned my above it with the quakers and that during that first visit to san francisco. I attended large. Gathering of friends was held in the east bay and i saw a notice on the bulletin board that said that gay and lesbian friends were going to be meeting in a specific time. And there's a room number i When enormous amount of internal angst To get up the courage to go. That meeting had been organized by two gay quakers named gary miller and ron bentley. Gary millar's Still alive actually still active particularly in education issues. And they had invited del martin and phyllis lyon to come and speak to the gathering down and phyllis were the first lesbian activists i ever met so you can imagine the impact that they had on this seventeen year old long hair boy from phoenix and doubt and phyllis were active in one of the earliest groups here in the bay area council religion and the homosexual which head enlisted liberal but we would now call today progressive clergy mostly from the anti war and civil rights movement to support us in our efforts to stop the police abuse. Stop the harassment in the beatings arrests. Which were so common then so i got to meet and phyllis and then i went back to phoenix to try to go to school. I gave it a semester. Couldn't stand it. i couldn't concentrate. I just wanted to go back to san francisco. And then i moved back but i already had the. He's rather remarkable connections to some of the greatest pioneers movement has ever produced another one. Was jim foster. Who has Regrettably been i think largely forgotten but he was the first out gay person to ever address a national political convention. He spoke to the democratic national convention in nineteen seventy two. I think it was at three in the morning but and this was about the same time that harvey was moving to san.

"In their own words. Good listeners were here with novo see san and we are talking about their wonderful new book. That's called the pronoun low down so novo. Can you tell us a little bit about why you wrote this book and give us some context for it. Oh yes so. I think a big reason why we're at. This book is exactly that context. I think that there is a real upsurge in the awareness around pronouns at the moment and a lot more conversation around trans identity which is really beautiful. I hold a lot of gratitude in my hot full that. But it's also not a new compensation and it's not an year thing. And so i really wanted to bring some of our attentions back to the historical context in which trans identity have has always existed in the world on the land. That i'm on the land of the clinicians. And i pay my respects to the elbows past. Present and emerging in the eighty thousand plus years of history that has existed on this country and gender diversity has existed for all of that time as well so i think it's really important to counter this sort of worm. Orange trans identity being a left-wing fads and re contextualised where we actually all within history within humanities time line and trans people have always existed. The gender diversity has always been president and also talk about how some languages are evolving with gender neutral use and especially gendered languages. I wanted to explore that. I wanted to explore trailblazers and pioneers. I wanted to tell a little bit of my story. And mostly i wanted to stop getting miss genders book about my life and continued getting mischief ended after that so i thought at least if i wrote a book about pronouns hopefully that will help and yet it seems evident even post this book that i will continue to get mis gendered even in gigs where they have booked me specifically to speak about my gender. Unfortunately wow i found this book so useful. I'm a teacher. I grew up in a segregated white community. As as i've grown as i've live i've been able to see you all of these boxes and labels and structures of patriarchy and how they have hidden from me this diversity and i'm also aware maybe for the first time of how much that i don't know. Thank you so much for expressing that sarah and for your auburn vulnerability and being truthful with that process. Because i think that that is a really important case step in. This revolution is understanding some of our orange shortcomings or earn lack of awareness of certain things. And i think the way you spoke to that was also really beautiful. Because it's not a mistake and it's not an accident that these truths have been hidden from us. They have been very much on the agenda of those in power to keep them from us. And you know the way the speak about the role of the patriarchy. I think is crucial because when it comes to feminist discourse and what comes to the liberation of of women for example you know that liberation comes very much hand in hand with trans people when we liberate trans people. Everyone else is liberated too. You know because we all oppressed engaged by the shackles of gender expectations and stereotypes. I've never actually met anyone who was really off. Finds these rigid gender. Binary is really empowering and liberating for me. I've never met a man who has been told to man up all these. Just such a wuss. Or he shouldn't have any emotions and that that has been empowering and brilliant experience for him you know and i've never met a woman who has told me that when she's accused of being on her period she feels seen and heard and understood because she is always on her period and then informs her perspective on everything. I don't hear those things. And i think that there is a deep grief else society from these processes of gender rings that we have undergone that we have had to really shave down pots about sales in order to fix into these really limiting boxes. And i just. I believe you can put seven point eight. Approximately billion people into two categories. I mean that seems ridiculous. Even if you are sustained a woman or a man the way that you embody your womanhood or your manhood your expression the way to address the places that you feel most comfortable in your hobbies your interests your expression is also vastly different from every other person. That might detract with so. I really believe that. No one is liberated by as boxes and that we can find ways to bring all ships to the shore with this rising tide of revolution. Beautiful you remind me of harvey's words. I am all of us. What can you say about harvey milk and harvey milk day was he was. He brought forward to use a figure in terms of learning about a gay history. Yeah that's a really good question. I mean he was somewhat worse. I feel a lot of grief. I think of how little i know about history and how much i would like to learn. More and s log on panels. And when i give talks about Sort of activist life cycle and how it is the instant gratification that we get from social media but rather a long game a generational gap what is important is out conservation and sustainability of our own self care and community cath throughout that process because we may never see the world that we envision that we fight for in our lifetimes and i think harvey milk is such an important example of that the work that he did while he may not have seen the ramifications of the output of the us has now been the fruits. I get.

I had known harvie as a long haired free like the rest of us and he just come from his tomoe horgan days in new york and suddenly he appeared in a suit and tie with short hair and he said he said i may look like. I'm no longer one of you but this is this guy this is. This is a performance. I have cut my hair and wearing the suit and tie as he performance for us to gain power within the system. "It's not. And i do have a chapter in the book called out. If the crowd comes harvey milk this chapter four. I'm moved to sixteen. And castro gauges in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight if you walk down castro street almost at anytime. Then you'd probably see harvey milk physically going about his business either posting flyers or at work in his castro camera store. Work in air quotes. Because there wasn't a lot of work that happened. One of harvey's flyers that i sola said dr businesses in the castro that you patronized and our homophobic then it listed several stores. One of them was called mike liquors and urged people to stop shopping there and lobi people dead and they lost the stores. A lot of money will guess what in a week or two. Those store said over. Hiring drag queens. They were our best friends. They totally reverse course. It was a pure business decision. It was a brilliant straight for its strategy. What did it take a little flyer. I really loved it. People underestimated what gay people were really thinking. They thought we'd all be docile. And just say. Take the money and discriminate against me. Oh well harvey came to my attention by doing that. But the most significant thing he did involves standing up to the police. I always had problems with cops in how they treated. Everyone in those days straight punks would come into the neighborhood. Usually around two. Am they would start to beat up on some poor gay guy. If you call the cops the cops would come from. Mission station enabled hassle the gay guy. Then you would try to stop them from hassle hassling. The guy harvey milk stood up to that crap in the castro the report out of the bars around to of course it's a side will turn people just didn't dispense immediately. They stand around into a they do a little dance they cruise for someone to gone with. There is a particular evening when all the bars emptied substrate guys pulled up jumped out of the car started to wail on poor gay guy. Fortunately there are some people there with alarm whistles Wanted them. Thanks to hank. Wilson distributed these whistles previously. Everyone started to whistle for help. The drew attention to the The incident we all over to her. The gay guy was beaten the straight punks. Were gone once the whistles went off. Zoom they left. The cops showed up late but when they did their interaction with the guy who was beaten up was not positive. The guys treated him like he had done something wrong by getting beaten up they were snide to him and all that kind stuff. Suddenly out of the crowd comes to jewish calvary harvey milk. He says to the cops. What are you doing here. don't you understand. This meeting matt needs help. what's happening. My heart leapt in my throat. I thought i really don't like cops. And i always want to stand up to them but i was afraid i'd get killed if i do that right then and there was an epiphany about who. Rv was and who we could be. There are a lot of queens very conservative. Didn't lock right. Rock the boat even over incidents of gay violence. But it was when it was in your face. It was hard to equivocate about it. I mean the cops were definitely out of line. When i saw harvey stand up the golden cops out on their stuff in front of everyone. I thought there's my hero. That is tom miano reading from his book. Kiss my gay. As air from out of the crowd comes harvey milk. Wow so listeners. This book is available to you as a premium. We have two copies. Eighteenth nineteen seventy seven just after he was elected to the san francisco board of supervisors on november eighth. And this audio comes to us. Courtesy of milk colleagues. Walter kaplan and dan nicoletta originally remastered from the cassette recording by jenni olson and friends. Let's listen harvey milk speaking restore on the evening of friday november eighteen. This is to be played. Only in the event of my death by assassination gleb given some strong and long and considerable thought to this not just since the election. I've been thinking of this time election and certainly over the years a fully realized that A person who stands for what. I stand for activists. Activists becomes the target or the potential target for somebody who is insecure. Terrified afraid very disturbed themselves knowing that could be assassinated at any moment any time. I feel. it's important that some people know my thoughts. The first and most obvious wasn't concern. Is that if i was to be shot and killed the mayor as the power. George clooney appointing. My success on the board supervise. So i would like to have him know my thoughts are. I stood for more than just a candidate. I have never considered myself candidate. I have always considered myself part of a movement. Part of a candidacy considered the movement of the candidate. I think there's a delineation of those who use the movement. And those who are part of the movement.

Visit give to wbai dot org or call the donation line at two one. Two two zero nine two nine five zero. You are listening to radio gag on. Wbai ninety nine point five fm. And now we'll hear from another activist. Tom yano california. In san francisco elected official. Tom sat down with me. And our review gag team member libby edwards and he reads about harvey from his memoir. Kiss my ass or is this acerra lily on the radio gag team. I'm here with libby edwards and we are interviewing tom. i'm yano. He is a longtime social justice. Advocate an elected official in a stand up comedian and he has written this great book. That's called kiss my ass. That's what it's called so. Yeah so tom. I'm just wondering out of out of all your accomplishments over. What do you want to tell our listeners about today. What what has had stood big impact out of the many things that you've done. Well i mean shorthand visibility visibility arenas that ordinarily have been Exclusive and still have a long way to go and that is so busy comedy than particularly elected As an elected official you when there is no voice My not just myself of courses all a team effort and especially around education as a teacher that is ability in that push for a for our own rights for young people. And the other thing is you. Harvey mill was very instructive about connecting the dots. Actually he didn't just say connecting the dots. He said connecting the dots. You very emphatic about it. And today we call that intersection -ality so if you look at his first campaigns you will see outreach to the disabled community a detenetions to workers to seniors to the chinese community asian community you know and to me that's the secret for today as well We can do this. But we have to be united around it recognize. You know each other's isn't friend is meant and so we don't need it's a beat rate. Now you with harvey on briggs right. It was almost ten. Surreal because here in san francisco around seventy five. We got some recognition of gay teachers and harvey was very helpful. That was establishment. Gays air quotes. And they were more. Don't rock the boat of be visible. Be nice we'd ever espoused that night. That's what i admired so much about harvey and so when we accomplish that in san francisco. We're feeling a little smug i guess. And then all of a sudden is you know kind of wacko guy in sacramento Coincidentally i actually went there myself. Many years later in the assembly came up with these ideas to to ban gay teachers and also anybody who knew. I mean if you really looked at that. Go proxy six. But the measure got a lot of attention so even if you knew somebody who was teaching you could be fired i mean it was really broaden painful. Listen but we knew that there were a number of people who respond to this. Because of the always focusing on the amidst recruiting molestation and so harvey took on this issue along with a woman named shelley gear art and they were the spokespeople for the treaty and decree as usual was fa- factionalized there. Let's do this way. let's do it that way. You know we finally just did it the way we wanted but under the umbrella of the same goal and i think that's what worked so there is people who spent a lot of money on ads and then this and then then a lot of us while we did the knocking on doors. I you know. Lot brave people and there was harvey and sally carrying at at flag for us. And we beat it back to two one. And in nineteen seventy so not not a bad thing not a bad thing. What you were saying that the bill would also affect people who know that someone was gay. I mean frank east. Germany exactly nazi. No just that's horrifying i do. I think it's any secret that every group has its own problems and in those days particularly goes teachers who were gay but deeply closeted you know and there was merit that i get that. Were very very hostile towards openly. Gay teachers and what we're trying to accomplish that internal a self hate that many groups experience but it is. It is a complicated issue. Any of these. Oh oh precious especially when your son legislation you know the equality act is Coming up for consideration soon. The usual suspects are really lobbying heavily against the catholic church. I always. It's only moves me when i who is probably an old man album young african-amer of just you know if it was me you know we know exactly what it was that l. true loud sahara all isn't it. Yeah well we wanted to talk about the book in the new author going to treat us in read. Sure well you know you live a long time. You see a lot of things so through friends. We decided least to put down my take on the dirty four years Being round witnessing things like the damn white riot squeak audit done You know almost eighty. So it's a memoir particular san francisco and of course. I'm happen happens that you know we know about maybe nationally the movement and all that and it's done pretty well and i understand we're going who lead donate to to the station and you can do with them. What you wish Name of the book is kiss. My gas and it comes from an incident that i had with arnold schwarzenegger. I'll leave you hanging about that. "To see if tai i you're on the line yay. Yeah i'm doing great and time we're back alive again. So can you tell us about this. Yeah tell us about this. Next interview with You tell us who's who we're going to hear from can't kid who If anyone knows anything about harvey milk can kids will love to tell you as much as he can about him and it was inspiration to come out. But i'd like to go full circle to say that can kid less west virginia moved to new york. Came out was on tv when i was a teenager And was an activist and that that energy put out york Was then televised and and talked about in reached me at a young age and kind of gave me hope that there was always a place to go and that there was always people looking out for me if i did come out so i wanted to say that before we introduced Is interview just to let you know how powerful coming out can be great. So let's go to the interview. Thank you So one of the things we're talking about with our gas is how he has transcended fame essentially to become an icon. Tell me a little bit about how his legacy has inspired or informed your own life or how you live your life first of all i. I'm really glad that really knock with this question. Because i think that you know to me. Harvey is a hero and to me. Harvey is inspirational but to eighteen. Nineteen year old can get harvey was aspirational. And it's really really really important to to kind of remember and put it into context. What might t seventy seven. Nineteen seventy eight looked like as an eighteen From the lands eighteen year olds. You know gay guy in a growing up on the virginia west virginia border at that time what was happening in my life was my first boyfriend. Who was mary my my big brother in my fraternity and i were causing a real scandal at my college. We lost our fraternity losses charter because the national Or got with the fact that we were getting so we lost charter. And i actually had a drop school because we got. It was a big scandal so i moved charleston. West virginia in nineteen seventy eight living in charleston. West virginia with his friend. He's broken up with his wife. And i start hearing about harvey nil and be still. Keep it on the dan le. We've just been scandalised for keeping them down low. I certainly not at work. But here's a guy in california. Who's telling me that i can be. Here's a guy who's telling me that in my first job. I can rewrite the rules. I also at college had been told by my advisor in political science. He knew that. I wanted to be a senator. I wanted to go into politics. It was what i wanted to do and he said to me you can either be gay or you can be a politician. Can't be both can't yet. And i was just shocked and he said i said well i said what do you mean Somebody's gotta be the first because it's not gonna be. You're not strenuous. And i remember that shocked me like that absolutely contributed to why i really did out a closet harder and harder and why. I just made a choice. Like it wasn't a choice. There was no choice. I had to be true to myself and the consequences for real the fraternity lost. Its charter. the you know we were scandalized. Marriage broke up my grades plummeted. I began drinking and doing a lot more drugs. Frankly and then we found ourselves limited charleston west virginia and right about that time harvey milk is saying your narrative can be changed right about that. I'm looking at this guy. Who who has the bully pulpit. Here's a man who is a shopowner. A business person. Here's a man who has legitimized himself. Here's a man who they're talking about on national tv right. We had three networks said. Never there wasn't even cable news network. It was like for this guy to get airtime. He's doing something right right. So here's a guy they're sticking the microphone in front of who's got a home. He's got a business. He's he's respected he's valued people are asking in his opinion. That was as important to me as the fact that he was an elected politician here was somebody who was making ends meet and i knew and i really thought that if i came out to my boss i knew i didn't think i knew if i out to my boss i wouldn't be able to makings neat. There's a glimmer of hope coming from california from this guy doing it. Who's got people that respected you know. He put it out there and that was inspirational to me but the career that he had was aspirational life. He had he could pay bills. That's much more important than people ever really talk about. So suddenly these possibilities broken up in harvey was just emblematic of that. And he was telling other people through his through this life he was educated and other people that that that was possible for them to and by other people i mean eighteen year old can hit love to hear more about your coming out story in the workplace or your professional life. So i'm in working in the state tax partner charleston west virginia and in nineteen seventy eight in november of nineteen seventy a arvin assassinated and i remember In that time the technology of the day was we had an fm radio in the orders. That with this too and they announced over the radio that there have been sas. Nation was one o'clock in the afternoon. It was lunchtime. Because you know the time difference i was. I was dumbfounded. I was devastated. You know it was like it was. The world was rocked. It was like it was like somebody kicked me in the chest because he was a hero. Who had to be my secret here. Right 'cause i couldn't really it. We talked right at home that had some friends we knew harvey milk was. Nobody else really knew this was talked with embiid and even the way they pitched it does. Local charleston station is kitchen thing about this strike. This guy didn't know harmful ham sandwich. Threat and i did. I remember you. Devastated came back getting. there was one work friend. i had their. Who's straight and i remember. He looked he goes remote right. Because you don't. I'm not alright. This harvey milk thing is a big deal to me. Harvey milk was a hero mining. Rarely i don't i is. I don't know. I don't i said i do Announced its guessing. Larry larry. I told i came out to a co worker on the day. Harvard 'cause harvey because of his legacy. Because i remember was fresh in my mind talking about coming out. And i had wanted to come out so desperately and the reaction wasn't right in our work. Relationship was not exactly the same after that he looked at me. Scans for he always wondered. Whether i we were good friends Because the homosexual panic as they say right off my experience of that day was my might. There was a definite immediate change. In that i had some. I was out in the office. I risked gossip. I risked.

We'll share these archives with you in the harvey milk day. Radio gag podcast. That's two one two two zero nine two nine five zero. That's it and we're so excited to bring you a conversation now. That josh had with our first special guest. None other than harvey milk. Nephew stuart milk stewart travels the world champion championing. A message of hope much like his uncle. So your uncle believe that. The personal Coming out could have an immense impact on society and help younger people. You made the decision to come out soon after his death. Could you tell us a little bit about your own coming out story well. Interestingly enough my uncle knew that i was gay. Although i never came out as lgbt hugh and i was out a little bit before my uncle was assassinated but still had come out to him yet. Do that. I was gay and told everyone in san francisco. Had you know this game. Now that he's had these conversations with my initial conversations with my uncle was around ceiling different It really began. The conversation began in nineteen seventy two. He was producing. Jesus christ superstar the original production on broadway and he took me and my mom to one of the premiers and you know he said afterwards. Do you want to go back and meet. Jesus christ you. Mary madeline new on a knee. Judas and i said no i wanna be beaching herod and he said oh really. Why do you think he's still wearing drag. As so and i don't know if you know in the original version of jesus christ superstar banting herod was in full drag with like you know ten inch heels and everything so so yeah that began our conversation about my seeing the world differently and he was the only person in my life who really saw that as a positive or who gave me you. He said i wouldn't feel bad about feeling differently. Liked you know. I would say that to my parents to my mom and she would say. Don't worry eventually you'll fit in or your aunt. They yeah your uncle was like no no no. You never wanna lose that and i remember saying well pretty lonely place and he said well there's something powerful that will come from that too and he gave me actually a book called seven eros which is a native american teaching about people being and he wrote in the cover of that to me. He said you and all your differences the medicine that will heal the world even when the world doesn't recognize that and so that was like a real touchstone for me and a compass. And i to this day. Hold onto a really powerful message. And that's what he pretty much talked to me about so my coming out publicly was so i was out. I was my first year at college. american university was my first semester. And i had been going to gay bars and feeling at the time. That's about as out as most people were if they were even that most people were not even doing that. And when i did come out and became visible i got to see now. I felt like i had to do that to honor my uncle who was also you know this amazing martyred now figure in in my broader community. My family my lg family. But i lost half of my friends. When i came out i mean. I don't think i knew a single soul on the campus who was openly l. Gb and i was called into the president and office at the school and joseph cisco who is the provost at american university now the president he called me into office and i thought he was going to call me in to give his condolences on the loss by uncle. Come out. I said you have come out as nice doors. He was homosexual. And i said yeah and he said well i need to help you choose a new major and i said what because i was in the school of international service to study to be in the foreign service and he said you know you cannot legally serve in the state department. So there's no reason for you to be in the school of international service. Let's choose a new major powers my reality coming out. It was one that i think most. Lgbt people go through which was really refreshing. And you know it's kind of like when you can take off a mass and you can breathe and you are who you are but at the same time the repercussions were pretty severe. It was still a brutally homophobic environment. Although clearly the my uncle's tadic bishop and it was a vision. It wasn't spiritual. He didn't believe that you know that he was ordained to be killed but he knew that the reality was that it would most likely happen and he wanted that. If that did happen he wanted that to have be sustaining. And life affirming message. That would go out. Not just for the uncertainty community but for anyone who society didn't accept who they are then were and so his message like the bullet smashed through my brain smashed the door. It really wasn't just not be message with.

Violence and this week's in memoriam is dedicated to harvey milk. Rv bernard milk. My hero was a visionary community leader in a gay rights activists born on may twenty second nineteen thirty in new york and raised in a small middle class jewish family. He attended the new york. State college for teachers in albany enlisted in the us navy and served in the korean war after four years of service. Harvey was officially questioned about sexual orientation. He chose to leave the navy at the of lieutenant junior grade and moved to new york city where he worked as a public schoolteacher and wall street investment. Banker party took no and enjoying his sexuality and he was an avid opera buffed becoming more involved in politics advocacy and activism in nineteen seventy-two. He moved to san francisco. He opened a camera store. On castro street. The became a meeting place in the heart of the city's growing queer community because of harvey sense of humor and deatrich. He became known as the mayor of castro street. After an initial unsuccessful run in november nineteen seventy seven harvey was elected to. San francisco's board of supervisors becoming one of the first openly. Gay officials in the united states and the very first openly gay elected official in the state of california. His unprecedented win is proudly. Gay candidate for public office energized the lgbt community during a time when it was experiencing rampant discrimination hostility and violence as a dedicated san francisco city county. Supervisor harvey's political agenda included protecting gay rights establishing daycare centers for working mothers renovating military facilities into low cost housing reforming tax codes to attract businesses and even passing pooper scooper law for san francisco most notably though he was responsible for passing a stringent. Lgbt rights ordinance. In the city of san francisco on november twenty seventh nineteen seventy eight. Harvey milk was gunned down at point blank range in his office by a disgruntled former city. Supervisor dan white who had methodically crawled through a window to escape the city hall metal director detector assassinated san francisco mayor george mosconi and then taken the time to reload. His weapon with hollow tipped bullets to assassinate harvey because he had received daily death. Are you We're up in san francisco in harvey's Office at castro camera and Harvey's graciously taking a few minutes out of his very busy schedule to To talk to us about politics and san francisco and how he got elected the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in california. History I'd also talked about the politics california rather than cisco that's because i don't think there's Delineation they don't think that there's a difference in in politics in san francisco as opposed to. Let's say politics in los angeles degree. It is no boat built. Sam cisco that separates us for the rest. Sometimes we wish they were But i think we're takes cisco For whatever reasons can take place any place is just about of understanding when it's all about san francisco for interesting. Because i'm gay. That becomes the big media event that sells newspapers. But it's very important that we realized that. I was elected as a candidate who was gay. Gay kennedy did it run on a gay issue The eleven districts We have In san francisco difference is that We are both of county supervisors in city council people. What are the same Cities divide into eleven districts and since we are city and county. It's one powerful. Very powerful legislator group you have to pick your your. The George Moscone and Harvey Milk Assassinations

"Hello and welcome to the podcast. I'm tracy the wilson in its november twenty seventh on a stay in nineteen seventy eight san francisco mayor. George mosconi and supervisor harvey milk were assassinated by former supervisor. Dan white white had resigned seventeen days earlier but he had tried to be reinstated as a member of the board of supervisors but while the mayor had initially said that he would be able to return to his job when he made this request. The mayor refused mayor. Mosconi had run on a platform of social progress and inclusion and while in office he hit appointed women and people of color and gay people to government positions white on the other hand had campaigned with the slogan of unites and fight and in one pamphlet he had said quote. I am not going to be forced out of san francisco by splinter groups of radicals social deviants incorrigibles. He had also voted against a gay rights. Ordinance in san francisco. The mayor had seen an opportunity to replace white with somebody who is more in line with his own goals. He had tried to pass a number of reforms before white's resignation and they had consistently failed by one vote so on the day of the murders mayor mosconi was planning to announce white's replacement but on the morning of the twenty seventh white entered the building through a window to bypass metal detectors. He entered moscow office and shot him four times. And then he went into the office of harvey milk in the supervisor's chamber down the hall and shot five times before leaving the building later on. He said that there were others. He had planned to kill it city hall as well. Acting mayor dianne feinstein. Who had been the person to discover harvey. Milk's body made this moment. Quote as president of the board of supervisors. It's my duty to make this announcement. Though th mayor mosconi and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. The assembled crowd was stunned very vocal and once they were quieted she continued quote. The suspect is supervisor. Dan white whites defense when this came to trial was diminished capacity and that has come into common parlance as the twinkie defense. But that idea is really a myth. There were some mentions of junk foods in one psychiatrist testimony in this trial but it was really about being under huge amount of stress and prone to cycles of depression. So the testimony about junk food. Wasn't that dan white eight a bunch of twinkies and this caused him to commit murder. It was that the junk food based diet was a symptom of his struggling mental health. And that it also exacerbated the existing underlying problems. He was having the twinkie defense. Nickname was spread through news coverage. But doesn't actually describe how junk-food came up in the trial even though he had confessed to the crime and he had reloaded his gun. Before approaching harvey milk then white was found guilty of manslaughter rather than murder. He was sentenced to seven years eight months in prison and would ultimately serve a little more than five years. The verdict led to public outrage including what came to be known as the white knight riot and a candlelight march from san francisco's castro district to city hall california later abolished the diminished capacity. Defense in part because of its successful. Use in dan white's trial. He took his own life after getting out of prison. In nineteen eighty five and a lot of ways. The assassination of harvey milk has overshadowed that of mayor mosconi. Milk was one of the first openly. Gay elected officials in the united states and he was a known public figure and activist in san francisco. How or whether homophobia affected whites in the jury's verdict has been debated in the years since all of this happened and milk himself has become a lot more widely known in the context of the gay rights movement

Cleve Jones: Queer Spaces After COVID-19

"The reality is that the Gayborhood are going away. So, if you look at San, Francisco's Castro district or Seattle's Capitol Hill or Washington DC's Dupont circle or boys town in Chicago West Hollywood or anywhere you want to look lavender Heights in Sacramento wherever you look where there's a defined gay neighborhood. It's not just a place where there's bars though bar life has always been an important part of our culture. It's where very important things happen. I is political power. When we are concentrated in specific precinct gives us the power to elect our own public office the the power to defeat our opponents, the power to pass legislation that directly affects our lives in our wellbeing. As we are dispersed. We lose that power. Another super important part of it was the cultural vitality look at all the amazing stuff that's come out of West Hollywood that's come out of my neighborhood I mean it's no coincidence that the rainbow flag and the First Gay Synagogue and the First Gay Film Festival and the Aids Memorial Quilt and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence all were born in the Castro because there's that magic that happens when creative people when choreographers and filmmakers dancers and deejays and painters. Are All in that same area and I. Know that collaboration can occur very effectively online but there's nothing like the magic of face to face contact close proximity for that cultural vitality, and then the third thing that's at risk are the specialized social services for our most vulnerable population. So. Whether we're talking about people like myself who are getting old long term survivors of HIV or queer kids trans kids who were fleeing trump's America where do they go? They can't come to the Castro a little crappy studio apartment in the Castro is going to cost you twenty, five, hundred dollars a month. So this is the reality that nobody's really quite talking about that that community that has given so much and strengthened us in inspired US moved. US forward. Being threatened and there's many factors technology. Many. People will say, Oh, well, we can live anywhere. We want. No, you can't. Tell me that try it. You know go to Duluth and walk down main street and hold hands no offense to duluth or any other city. You Might WanNa try doing that outside of a gayborhood. So we need these these spaces they're important and we need to figure out what's our next move? Do you have a solution. There's no easy solution but yeah, when people say oh, cleave. Cities Change well. Thank you for that brilliant observation. Yes. Of course, it has changed but we want to. Be Thinking about that change and the big factor is that cities have changed in a way. That's profoundly new. For generations since the industrial revolution, the cities were the place where refugees went immigrants, Bohemians, counterculture people, artists, homosexuals, and all these people of all these different backgrounds and ethnicities genders would you know create this these cauldrons of creativity and and they would climb their way up the economic ladder move out to the suburbs and that was really accelerated in the Post Warrior the nineteen fifties, the nineteen sixties, nineteen seventies, the phenomenon of white flight. So when I got to San Francisco, the population of that city had been declining steadily since the end of World War Two and we were able to go into these neighborhoods that had been largely abandoned by the working class immigrants that had built them originally. And create what we created I on Polk Street. Then on Castro and folsom street hate streets you know he's really vibrant communities. These are now some of the most expensive neighborhoods in the world. So the district that gave us Harvey Milk. is now inhabited increasingly by wide heterosexual gendered millionaires when you arrived in San. Francisco, you had a sleeping bag and a couple of shirts and forty two dollars and you were welcomed into this guy's home. You would never met who was not expecting you. It was an address you have from a friend and there was a safe place to live and to get on your feet. Even, if it's not as San Francisco, like that mentality is so unique. I think that's pretty much now partly because it's just so difficult to survive. So the young people I meet in their early twenty S. You know these and of course San Francisco, it's all tech And there's a lot of anger towards the tech invaders but I have a lot of empathy and. Real concern for them because first of all, most of them are working sixty seventy hours a week. They have no job security. There would never use the the phrase exploited workers to describe themselves but are blanche you are but I think also back then and especially in San Francisco it was still Kinda Hippie dippy. And it was very counterculture. It was very communal. And everybody was kind of expected and really encouraged to contribute in some way. You didn't necessarily have to be all that good at what you did, but you needed to do something whether it was a drag show or video or film or A. Poetry contest or something there was A. There was a real nurturing of people's creative pulses and a lot of support for there was so many places I knew where if I was hungry I just show up and there would be every night. There would be a communal potluck dinner. There were probably six or seven of those households within a few blocks of where I was living on Castro Street. So I never went hungry.
