Harvard mit watch it especially during the trump years when i needed some voice of sanity to guide me through those days and so when i got word that chris has a new memoir out called this country my life and politics and history. I knew i had to talk to him. And i was not disappointed was nervous. Yes when you're interviewing the guy who's famous for asking the hardball questions who's interviewed thousands and thousands of people in his career who's a big columnist and journalist. Yeah he want to bring your a game. But chris made it quite easy. He's a super relax. Nice guy. I think my only issue is. It's pretty hard to get it in a word edgewise. Because he knows how to talk but he's interesting so i think you're going to really enjoy this interview. We talked about a ton his upbringing just outside of philadelphia his transition from a republican to a democrat early in his life growing up as a young capitol hill aide and speechwriter and he was also a capitol hill. Police officer we talked about what he learned from. Such senate luminaries tip o'neill and then chris of course gets way into current events. He offers his advice to nancy. Pelosi in the democrats he talks about potentially upcoming election pitting. Donald trump against joe biden again. And then i even ask him some horrible questions like why did he leave hardball so abruptly and he answers that and we also find out. What is next for chris matthews. Will he be back on television. Or is he just going to continue as a writer. He has lots and lots of wisdom here. Such an interesting guy. I was very happy to have on the show. So without further. Ado i bring you. Mr harvey ball himself. Matthews.

"Upon which he had painted to black ovals and a long semi-circular curve a smiley face. Now it could be argued that the icon of a circle containing a smile is probably not even something a person can claim they invented most kids win scribbling out there. I stick figure cran drawings usually top those basic bodies with the smiley face and they do it instinctively. it's pure and simple and almost universal but harvey ball was the first to see its potential as morale-booster and maybe even the first to put those black lines on a yellow background and his insurance company clients was even more pleased with it. They had one hundred buttons made with the image on it and management past the buttons out to employees whenever they noticed someone was smiling while they worked and with that the floodgates burst wide because neither harvey nor his clients ever trademarked the image. Just about everyone. With an ounce of entrepreneurial spirit started to make and sell all manner of merchandise with the smiley face upon it posters. Check t-shirts check coffee. Mugs you bet and harvey. Oh he didn't mind. Honestly how ironic. Wooded of ben if the guy who invented the smiley face took the world to court over the use of such an iconic symbol no harvey just sort of rolled with it. He sold reproductions of his original painting. He did signings at conventions and even started a charity. A world smile foundation amazingly even the paycheck for that. Original design job was less than ideal and yet harvey never complained after all his client had promised to pay him for his time. And that's exactly what they did. Forty five dollars for ten minutes worth of work. I hope you've enjoyed today's guided tour of the cabinet of curiosities. "After picking up to charging fouls and going to the bench with three Keith Williams is getting a tutorial from two of the officials that called those charging fouls. They're standing off to the side. One of the officials kind of visit physically going through what happened in his opinion, leading to the foul on Keith. I don't think he is going to feel any better about it. At least he is getting a detailed Explanation for what the official saw. Don't need you come over here and tell me why you called the file on me. Don't call the file of the guy's feet were on the line. We couldn't see the replay. Then you call the block. Obviously his feet were outside of the line. Keith ran into him, and that's a charging five. So keeps gonna have more body control. But don't come over and try to explain something to me. I don't want to hear it. I'm not something I'm trying to get. This thing passed in my mind, and you're trying to come over here and tell me what's going on. You see Apple throw it in. Pete Williams has come out. David Julius has come out Zack Harvey in Basin Mats and in the catchall, try some full court pressure. Mobley is the trigger man for UCF inbounds for Perry Harvey on him all. 94 ft. And Perry will dribble the ball past the time line with three seconds to spare. We've got 15 50 left in regulation carry driving toward the rim. Cross court pass caught by Fuller up top for Mobley. He drives outside the arc preparing good dog fires A three point shot Missed it. Mobley gets an offensive rebound You see up resets. Here's Perry between the circles Cincinnati leading 41 36. Perry, guarded by Vote tough matchup passes into the corner wide open three. In and out. No good. Put back up by Walker. No good rebounded by Davenport. He runs Cincinnati three on three. Now the bear cats wait for their team mates to catch up, Harvey with a long three. It is short rebound Gets hip to Mattson kicks it out to Devonport for an open three. No good. With an offensive rebound outside the arc for Harvey in the Bear Cats Reset Mike Adams Woods for three. No good. Another offensive rebound for Chris Vote passes out to Mason Madsen Madsen 43 no good. Rebounded by Mehan four open threes, The bear Cats missed all of them. Now may hand driving to the rim running shot. No good. Rebounded by Davenport had his pocket picked by Mehan passes to Fuller into the corner. Mehan. His three point shot is no good followed tip in by various Perry. Lot of energy, a lot of action going on there. Now. Harvey in the front court for Cincinnati, wipes the ball in front of his defender drives to the low, block added post away by Fuller gets it to Davenport. The bear Cats will reset leading by three 41 38. Their cats have gone more than two minutes without scoring. Adam's Woods passing for boat to the Left wing and Harvey Harvey dribbles between the legs now accelerating against Mobley. Stops in the short corner passes to Adam's Woods. 43 Air ball as the 32nd buzzer sounded. UCF has the ball they gonna head into the corner. Perry 43. Missed it. Offensive rebound by Walker just outhustling Cincinnati. Davenport didn't box You see up down by three with the ball Theresa's going to check in for you see Perry out near center court crosses over against Harvey Ball's loose on the floor. Perry diving for it tipped it remotely had it knocked into the backcourt. Saved 2 may hand shoots from mid court miss the shot that will be a 32nd violation. That shot goes up in Jeremiah Davenport's watching the ball as it goes up in his man just came right around and grab the offensive rebound. Luckily, they scrambled and calls their second 32nd violation. Hey, Cincinnati, now four for 17 from outside the arc. After that flurry of missed threes, Bear cats, one of the worst three point shooting teams in the country coming into the game at 29% in there below that today, 23 a half what they have a three point lead. And for the first time today, Chris Boat's gonna play alongside Tories. Full court pressure by the Knights. Adam's Woods. Longley, feet Caught by East Gets it ahead, Mason Match and Wide open New York He knocks it down from the right corner. John Brandon calls a time out. I love these timely timeouts that he calls after a basket. First of all, you allow the emotion to set in, and then you want to keep that sentiment. Get him in something defensively. He calls more early time outs after made baskets than any coach that I can remember. You gotta stand on that. Dude. I don't have a status, not a camp. All set. I could try to look it up. They've got everything else. But you're right about that. I can't think of anybody who does that early in the game more often than John Doe. From a psychological perspective. It's easier to talk to somebody after they've done something positive is like Pablo's dogs. You can train a guy from Positive enforcement whether than negative enforcement where they do something bad and you take him out and you're ripping the entire time. John was always one of those guys where he's going to try to find the best in every situation. So when he sees something he likes you want to call a time out. So this defense, make sure they understand the system and also get Chris boat out of the game to protect him from foul trouble. Pete Williams is back in for Cincinnati. So is David Julius Davenport and Adam's Woods heading to the bench. 44 38, Cincinnati on top by 6 13 16 to go as fuller dribbles past the time line, Julius clapping as he defends staying about a stride away. Now he closes the gap a bit. Fuller passes on the wing. Perry has it top of the key for Walker Way outside the arc for Isaiah Adams, who checked in. He passes for Fuller into the corner. Perry three point shot too strong and Walker knocks it out of bounds. It's good contest right there since that has been scrambling Tardis and got a hand up and went out there that Baldwin out of bounds. Full court pressure by UCF, a Cincinnati inbound for David Julius passes into the middle of the floor, intercepted by Walker two on one break. Walker dunks it in tar is gonna come to the ball. Julius do a soft pass to the tar is gonna come to the ball. Rare mistake against the full court press by Cincinnati and the Bear Cat Lead is down to 4 44 to 40. Julius looking toward the bench. John Brandon giving hand signals as Julius dribbles right in front of him. Bounce pass outside the Arc. Williams driving into the lane, Bad pass under the basket. Cincinnati catches a break. Has instead of intercepting it. Perry fumbled it out of bounds decision making keep made the right Thought where he was going to penetrate and drop a guitar E. But instead of throwing it up at the rim, where he conducted, he's trying to throw between where all the hands on nine on the shot clock is the bear cats get to set to throw it in from the baseline. Harvey will be handed the basketball Zach hasn't looking for an open teammate still looking, bounces it into the corner and Mason Madsen steps out of bounds as he catches the past. Chalk that one up the Tari Tari was one back and forth like if he's gonna go out if he's gonna go to the rim, and by that time it was 3 3.5 on the clock. He had nowhere to throw the ball, throw it to the corner. Cincinnati by four..

"They talk about wanting to take up a line on china. They talk about recognizing pres- yee's hostility towards democracy his authoritarian bit but actions. Speak louder than words stuck just to say it's true and right now the baiji ministration has taken a really good game about china and security and being firm and when you look at their actions their weasel out of all of the things. Donald trump put in place to fight china. It's not that they wanna think differently. And fight in different ways is that they're walking away from stuff that even democrats in congress wanted like crackdowns on confucius institutes around the country. I i'm deeply deeply worried given the bite and families ties into china that they're going to sell us down the river on this issue and thus far they're doing nothing to show otherwise and we all need to keep an eye on the situation but in particular on china tried to control our technology. It's it's going to be frightening if they're successful on this and hopefully hopefully If the vitamins duration won't fight members of congress and there seems to be bipartisan concern. This will speak up vocally. Hello there it's your your in here. I wanna talk to you a moment about a story. That is circulating in percolating There's a story of the washington. "If you got better margins in charge, a high higher price, anyone in supply chain out there anyone trying to supply into the supply chain industry distribution. And what's known as I? o t the Internet of things into connectivity and supply chain. If you're not thinking about incentive alignment, I'd argue term success as much as significantly lower probability to it. I. I couldn't agree more I think you're absolutely right I I also. By the way I, isn't it great I thought that those would be the to. kind of proud of myself because I thought that those would be the two that you would actually pick, believe it or not. I'm betting that it is because I felt that they were the most powerful I felt like distribution, and then, of course you know the the idea I've read. The matters you you you. You give away the razors in. You're selling the razor blades a love that idea, right? It's just it's awesome, but the thing about this this idea of the stick the strategic control and you make this point towards the end of chapter. One is that you say strategic control points are not binary because I think I think what as people are listening to the show that go? Strategical Control Point, but it's really not whether you have one or don't have one right. It's a continuing thing. Talk about that for a second. Thank you so much for bringing up because I would would have been remiss had I had I not so one of the things by the way was great working with you as I said earlier before we were on. Is that you get it when you read it? Clearly you get the concepts, and that's not always the case, so it's it's appreciated the direction of the questions, and this is one of them that I. I probably should have mentioned before so I'll answer it to is one absolutely does not binary. It can be from really weak. It can be from nonexistent to really week to kind of medium to really strong to Iona mock. It can be anywhere in between, so don't think if you can't find a parallel to the soft soap example that you can't use the concept. It's just a matter how far will get you? In how how effective will be in the marketplace, but even a little bit in recognizing it can make a difference in the market so absolutely it's a it's a continuum and so I think it's really important to recognize and then building on that Jay. The one thing I wanNA make sure to to your audience. It's out there on my use an example I. I tell a story about my dad, and his Indian motorcycle back in the day, and I quote someone named Jay Parkinson, who is a serial entrepreneur and I asked him. What what advice would you give and he's I'm serious successfully. You had many successful exits as a as a entrepreneur. What advice would you give to a budding entrepreneur? I'm what one piece. In the one thing he said to me which stuck with me to this day. Is he said by a whiteboard? Literally flow out the flow of money sketch out on a whiteboard as each step, think about who are the constituents, the players at each step and are their own self. Interest is each of them aligned with yours. Where does the money flow spend your time and effort where the money is? And so I think those two pieces knowing that strategic control is not a content I mean is a continuum, not binary. The notion of vertically align incentives can be from strong to weak, and if you can buy a whiteboard or a piece of paper or an IPAD that you sketch it out whatever you like to do and watch, it exists in step back from the market and think about where are we misaligned and we're might points A. A strategic control be even if it's not in my core, and what can I do to access it? I think just that little bit of effort, and you can do it in an hour in your office in your in your living room or wherever I think that that can go a long way to help both small businesses entrepreneur succeed. Will I let me let me just say this about this to the listeners out there? Okay so? In your book, you actually do have kind of a brief example of what a whiteboard might look like and how you made how you might sketch this out and you call it. Follow the money where we're is what you call it, and and then you have your harvey balls, which ones you know, our full half old quarter full. They look like moons that you fill in to determine you know where where your points are. Basically how strong those points are because member. It's not binary you actually taking these points ago. How strong is that control point in those areas? Using our did I interpret that correctly. Absolutely spot on perfect and I. Try really hard in the previous book before this I'm not as prolific as you, but I've had two of them anywhere. But the first one goes through this and I try and do the same thing in that book, and the goal to me is not just to tell stories. My goal is to get very concrete steps that you can do with almost instruction, manual or process flow for how you would do it for your business, and so I have six separate steps you would do as you mentioned with the with Harvey Balls in almost instruction manual. How you would put together for your business so that hopefully for the reader, it's relatively easy to do given your knowledge of your core markets. That's awesome. His name's Dr William Putz Us..

Did we really dive into the culture of Western, but it's one. that. You learn in immediately. Is that the heart? The symbol of a heart is ubiquitous and you recognize. Declared themselves the heart of the Commonwealth. So. They were a transportation hub They are essentially located in Massachusetts. But also right around that same time in wooster the Commercial Valentine. was invented but really the third reason is the most Tackle reason you can feel. "harvey balls" Discussed on The IT in the D show: This is what happens when geeks, alcohol, pop culture and current events get together
"This is a previously recorded episode episode of the IT and the D.. Show so we are joined. We got special guests in the studio. We are kind of asked him last minute because things kind of blew up a little bit but we got Marcus here in. Thomas was from Saga Marketing but Eric you made the mistake of Writing a blog on Lincoln and your life got turned upside down or my jumping to conclusions. It's so many conclusions on. AM radio for two hours. You're pretty much You got caught up. There could be worse. You could wind up on flashpoint. Ah You ended up on Channel Four. Though I've been I've been I've been on the news on the radio. I think I think maybe four or five times less money. I dropped it Monday. I was just on the news like almost every day and I got picked up by the free press republished it. I was a metro times. I was in dayline. Joy mlive lies like literally every day. I was in a new media source or to Eric. Eric wait do you hate Detroit Gilbert at audience or something not yet so uh-huh command. You're here's the problem with my profession right so as Detroit Not Gilbert Bill. Ah I like him. Please cut me a check. Bill Burr Stan. I think it's called definitely whatever you do if you see him at a bar. Don't Komo bottle of Scotch. Because he doesn't drink we found that involves other people do but I don't drink either and get your some water the H. Two H.. Two hydrogen peroxide is a good thing. Yeah Fancy looks like Bob. Bob's on a break. You had a party yesterday. I brought him the most expensive bottle title of water that I could find. Yeah keeping it. Fancy Fiji took all the water from those Fijian's Fijian's right exactly so so I guess what prompted you to write. Let's start from the beginning right and then let's start at the beginning so I I own my business partner now we own a storytelling agencies so we have people do is figure out how to adequately tell their story in ways that people care about. That's what we do on the daily and so I started writing. I started blogging one year ago to really kind of sharpen that cause marketing and brandon can be boring if you let it and talking about even talking about community affairs can be Kinda boring if you let it so. I've been trying to sharpening that knife. But one time I was sitting on a panel Abou- about Detroit Grit and they were talking about. You know it takes a certain level of greediness to do visit into trey above Blah Blah and I was on the panel. Oh I begged to be on the panel and so they were like. So how do you feel about Detroit. Asked him if I could be honest and they were like yes. Sure the Blunt Guy tells the truth that was like I hate this place into the crowd was the honest guy. Or you're the guy that had a bag of joints with you me in Detroit. Being the guy with a bag of blends with the guy in Detroit I it was what was crazy. Isn't it blows my mind. So I'm going to try and like I've lived in my entire life like in the hood not in the beautiful city of Royal Oak but in Detroit and so all my entire crowd was he was like a mixed crowd. You know it was like ninety nine percent new detroiters who've been to Detroit once or twice right and so how could you rate is the best I everybody asks everybody how every month my stars right now. How dare you be honest? How dare you Detroit's the best place with both murders? There's like we do the most here. The car hard meter number one right. Have you been to the river that's where the water's at that sounds great. So Oh it's so true for a decade like for a long time. I'm from here. You know your friend like I've had friends killed in front of my house. I'm not here like yes. That's you know like at annoys as me and so I'm I'm a little peeved off irked a wee bit perturb uh-huh so I decided to. I decided to write. I wrote this blog to explain myself so when people ask me why I hate to try I could could direct them. My blog usually get about maybe three hundred to four hundred read. It I did have a Steve Harvey Balls. Dan went viral. Got One point five million years. Okay so this is my second and my second viral post in a year so that one right so you guys work so hard I just right above Steve Harvey's heirs And so I wrote what about. I wrote a book a stupid blog about a comic book shop and our site went down ignorant. Don't want to blow up right. That's the one that blows exactly and this one was one of those. Like I'm probably five hundred readers probably going to be at the upper echelon of my average and in we come in and he's like a post at twelve thirty Monday morning. I come into the office said about nine o'clock I look at the thing. It's got about one hundred and twenty seven readers. I said all right cool two hours later has about five hundred marks. We're looking at it. You're like I was like well. You know the the fifteen hundred mark is about to do things like twisted quadrant. When Steve Harvey Parts of aliens or like like ten meters nine meters meters seven minutes test at one point my Steve Harvey bad housing? A minute so Out so I was like Whoa. So he kind of felt he was thinking about it. I think I might not breath. So Miller Day hit about fifteen hundred dollars. I see no problem but then all of a sudden he just you start to explode and so right now my blog alone not including the free press the Metro Times. All that stuff is that one hundred nineteen thousand on lengthy aw leaked in two hundred comments on linked in then. I have the Metro Times article that was shared another. I think a thousand times. No four thousand times SUV shared for the Then you've got a deadline Detroit which is shared another thousand times. You've got Channel Four. My interview is shared. I think like six hundred forty seven times so I mean I'm probably in the millions of us on this one again and is just breaking down the reality of doing business in Detroit Detroit and living in Detroit and facts are is. That downtown is cute. But it's seven point two square miles out of one hundred and forty two square mile. It's like everybody Calvin runs seven point two tours. I love comedy. Yeah the homing and so we were talking about. His kind of thing is making more inclusive. Bring people who would necessarily come to enjoy his historic. Those are necessarily all for new Detroit. Tourists no I mean it is but he's also to introduce people like me. I'm from the inner city. I had no reason to go toward the riverfront. I was like I was over there. Some water right but when I got there I was like Oh wait. There's some people here. How did that happen? Where did these people come from a dual job the suburbs and people who are from here they just gave up downtown? We're like what I've written on down there but when you go down there you're like wait. Oh Shit there's hope they're sort of The I two locations this telling people freaked me out this. This is why we have to be honest about what's happening today because I I had these two adorable low I kiss. Oh Lord. You're so adorable. I was walking. I was walking across the parking lot at twelve thirty in the morning. Right so I'm from Detroit. I'm walking. We're going to get some food. Go back to the office. Little girl watching me braces on her teeth. Blonde hair doorbell mister. Excuse me Sir. You was that she got to slow. Hello this boy was. There must have been her boyfriend or something. preppy low cut part down to join the side looking like he had the money. Or whatever say guys would the hell are you doing outside right now. Why why why are you here as to? How old are you seventeen? I'm like okay well. He's actually looked like she was about thirteen year. Old victim of like getting like the pre abducted child so I was like okay. What are you trying to say? Oh where's the interested people mover. I said I know Second over there. But here's the thing. I wouldn't do that if I were you. She's on his fine. We just went to dinner the trace back as great. Now we I went under people mover before I'm GonNa take him on the people mover. I was like bread. I was like okay. The interest is over there And over there but excuse me Sarah. Now he's like if you if you want to do this and be suburban. What about this? 'cause you know people from the celebrities have like a like you get shot for some reason bullets bounce off. I don't know invincible visible vulnerability who is just like you guys get your job. The police car police will hit you hop car apologize. I'm sorry officer I did. No I wasn't allowed to do that. You know it's GonNa be suburban about this. You know that's all you but I wouldn't do it so she stops. They have a little micro bourbon. powwow I don't really know what to look like you know you look at each other would you little telecom. And he was like well we actually die. There were flashing flashing emojis at each other and they were like. Would you not do it really. I was like Nah. Okay okay so they go. Hey let's go get in the car so you go getting some brand new like vehicle or whatever and so I'll go and I'm getting my food when I'm walking back there waving by tomato. Have those those type of kids right bad things these kids until they do right and so I'll say I'll be going down town of Lake. Hart Plaza the shelters. Since I've been fifteen years old going to city club Bob again. I seem about bullets bounce off me. Nothing bad not one bad thing. That's ever happened to me my entire life in the city but yet I read about it every day that it's the worst place on the were. That's the thing I don't want here's my thing. It is unlikely that you would die right like it's not like we just killing people all the time but what I don't want to have in his ways Los uh-huh suburban k that have forgotten that things are bad to come down here and get shot. They would shut Detroit back down they would turn Detroit off. They will close the door. Bourbon blind kids get shot trump's vow. How get built at eight mile turn the TV back on like me White America? You know like they were shutting down so -hension suburbanites attention. suburbanites standard is now closed off. We will not be able to give chicken. Scans but that's the that is so that's really real concern for me when these new restaurants are opening their closing just as fast. Because we're not talking about properly they're not talking about income per capita and density. If you look at like right next I know there's been about eight things that open up there and it was a barber shop bar goes so fast because what's happening is that we're not having genuine conversation about. Could they opened something for people in Detroit they would stay open weight. So it's record shop that oh no. But Jaguars got long money. Barb until like John Maeda Javale does is empty nine hundred percent. Because you're selling hundred dollar t-shirts kiss my ass. Beads like ninety eight bucks an okay so on boosting the people who are the people can't see me but I have a shiny asked ask ponytail and where John Barmaid scars. I have I wear. I have to John Veto scarves I got them for sixty percent off at sixty percent off. They were both they were one hundred fifty dollars a piece. I suppose three hundred dollars on half off my that's not for the Detroit. Detroit audience breath. What is four? And so. That's the problem if we if we have a genuine conversation about doing business and building things trade. That's great but did you hear.

It's going to be very difficult for everyone to navigate McCain analyze that will make furnishes past aged aged the twenty first of December. Yeah so all. He's got really is just transfer impacts Muslim teams. Every every week until he's got a good team no not me personally of a triple Chelsea of not been on triple Lester downgrading gaming of one or two of his less than Chelsea plies. I mean live applies. Maybe so you can do. But I wouldn't. I personally wouldn't worry too much about it. I two seasons ago. There was a blank game week and our plan plan for it so far in the vence by in overseas transfers in applies that will apply in this game week and my school was so shit shit for those six seven weeks honesty. Now think to myself. Why why why are we too much about is one week? Every single week is important as the other so if you sacrifice these next few game weeks just to prepare for one you're gonNA hurt yourself. I have a suggestion. Wosa play your free hit. Say I'll would not know early on on what you're GONNA say. No Yeah Lot there with an argument. Yeah a lot triple captain. There was no real strategy for that loss as a lot in the free hit by argues forget doubles and blanks wchs towards the end of the season off offer. You need to keep them like just Chris one team just because Free plays a blanket. Lie IT'S GOING TO BE A. It could be a lot worse than the season artist Pat. He must for now when you cross that road a little. Oh bit more when it gets to where maybe maybe get rid of one or two. Even if a short term but for now Leicester and Chelsea have good fixtures well oh no less than a frigging fixtures and less Chelsea Liverpool have good fixtures for now soy just focus on getting them point seen scene What could fix still there? And they lost question James Allen twenty-three count form with Simonova siler however is ace however it's a long season foam can change. Who Do you both believe who scored highest come into the season West? A tough bomb. I aww Germany feet man I is it could. But you've got a point to the evidence evidence he's Mon- I Asia looking is the this season are looking on real morning all the way for me. So Yeah we've got two things to finish this this episode. It's quite easy to find a good the story from one of these Unicorn companies because this this is a lot of great stories coming out of fossil leaving companies because moving and so trying to balance the program mm-hmm singing talk like Davies. Talk from Nedbank. I think personally for myself. I think it's really impressive. That a big enterprise that is generally known to move slowly adopted him look of the practice and so I think it's it's Disney message for everybody to hear that if it's possible Nedbank it's possible anyway if it it. devops isn't only for a certain certain small group as everyone. We've also seen a lot of adoption in many of the bank base in South Africa so I think it's it's great to have their Nedbank and being so involved in our community there sponsor they split last year and the year before food. So it's great uptick. Yeah I think at Devastates Minneapolis. We often have people from you know our local retailer or whatnot. Because it's nice to see. The uptaken devops practices from the wider industry. Not I just those of us who you know. The percentage of us here who work at tech vendors are like excellent tech vendors. This is how we do things but it's actually it was. It was refreshing declined and Dan to hear your talk because I think you brought a perspective that people don't always get tax. Love you quickly. Summarize we'll Lincoln shots but if you can quickly summarize what the focus your talk was it was a pitch right yes monitoring analytics. No it had nothing to do with that. So the folks at the talk with name of the talk rather was what enemy taught me about working in tech. It's something that's been a big part of my life. Is Computers in another thing. That's been a big part of my life is is mixed martial arts and realized not too long ago that a lot of what's important important to me in my career in terms of how I act make decisions and interact with the world around me. I learned from training and in doing martial arts and that was basically as we just the story I wanted to try to tell. Yeah I really liked that because I think that in both of your talks. Were that at those actionable takeaways takeaways of hey. The team matters and the structure in the organization and the way we set up incentives. I love how you're talking about how you'll take some of your management budget and use it to put treats at the meeting and the meeting has educational things for people to learn more about devops strategy. Yeah because I do think. It's not a tension between the personal. The organizational right. It's people are what makeup these organizations and I saw that both of your taxes accounting. So did you folks plan that as well. There's a lot of good. Planning a data is always a fun. Trying to balance between technical tokes and more cultural Normally get bogged down. 'cause tech. His name of the problem is always people I was actually. We surprised at some of the doors. Even though we thought we'd taken fix your one Cultural components which is also because I think that has more effect than an actual run the latest thing in production to be fair. I did have some demo videos and I did have an awful lot of tip of this project and this project and it's something search project they're cool and they do this and they do that but I do think that you've probably seen that. Maybe you can speak to your positions the rate of uptake or adoption of any given tool or any given open source. Project has a lot to do with the decision making of the people who are deciding whether or not to use it like they'll it could be a technically excellent tool and if there are no documentation and they haven't said anything on their requests for six months people are like I. I don't think I trust the humans. Even if they're called looks okay like I mean how experience you had Adrian in the workplace with trying to decide which opens her chosen right one for you or anything like that. I think I think you hit the nail in the head. They a tool and there's progress that have been sitting around for months and are dead quiet right and the last six months ago and there's no new releases it it definitely is a problem is the the problem is in the the code. It's the people of this community around it. It's going to happen. I mean unless you look at the code. Dan Shaking his head and I'm wondering eight thinking. Well maybe the code is Great. And you've just jump on and become the project legally thought to take decisions. Fatality of a project is an important important and interesting thing to look. I don't think it necessarily discounts whether it should be used or not. There's definitely projects and pieces of software that I've used in continue to a US that haven't had updates you know for ten years because what they were designed to do they still do properly now right so just because something hasn't been updated in in a few few funds that doesn't mean it can't be used probably a veteran a horrible security updates problem. Yeah I've read into that. We're like well guess we're pulling that out this week. That's not going to be a password. Snowy after we factor off of it this week with that's always a risk right yeah absolutely Thankfully there's more and more tooling around that that's making it easier to know and you build it into your lines or even just occasionally take a glance. CV Listen Austin and really get a feel for the horrors that our industry has wrought. I actually am curious Debbie from your point of view because obviously when tooling choices are being made at large enterprises. That have you know stay colours. Who are looking at large stacks of rand or euro or dollars Sir? Whatever I'm guessing? They're not pay with you throwing something into production. That has no one commissioner. WHO hasn't touched three years? I'm guessing like do you have standards. In general you the specifics. But how side is an open source project. Okay so we actually have principle that you can use open source We do have very tax security. And we've got to go through quite a few security checks and things like that before we put in open source before we test was to The approach that we reform worked for us was actually to take the community that uses is the to start unpacking. What are the problems that they are experiencing and then we map out the entire value stream process that they actually go who we look at one of issues that they're dealing with within within that extreme process we get team to prioritize? What our biggest issues that these are that they have to deal with and then we start looking at? What are the tools that would actually solve the problems? We then a put the two into a proof of concept really. It's an open source tool or something not may have to cash money for we. Then take the to fully who the pilot proof of concept and then we then you wait the outcomes against what we originally fun with problems that we wanted to solve way. We we actually do any time stamp measures we actually literally stop watch our developers with the times when we put the two lane after. We've gone all through learning cycle time stagnating again. And then we have reasonably scientific measures of efficiency gains and we been do like Harvey Ball.

"I think. Well, might might very well of hit on it. And I think there's a couple of reasons that you know, he deserves every every follow up chance. But you know, but she read I think was a little shaken, by the way this unfolded. He didn't like the way he looked going to the going out on the tracks that he had gotten washy and and that had not been him previously. So, you know. You can give him a mulligan. But at certainly if we think back to horse, like Irish war cry in fact, in recent years, Irish war cry, you know, had a miscue in Florida and and then snap back. So he was actually. I can't go on and become a really good steak source at amount of fifteen per mile and eight, but if you're looking for Kentucky Derby, you know, a mile and a quarter and the trip you need to do and if nerve being unraveled at Gulfstream Park on holy day was an issue. That's another thing. You don't wanna see in your Cam heading towards the Kentucky Derby. So if the reason he ran poorly was one he rejected the trip to it was an emotional issue. Well, any going to get any easier? The first in a mile quarter with twenty horses with that crowd with the long pre rates, the pomp and circumstance that goes with it. I like him a lot he can come back and win the fountain of youth. He could come back and win would Morial. I would not be shocked by that. I just think for a Kentucky Derby prospect, those were to really tough things swallow, and I love the horse. I hadn't ranked number two coming in. I was all into him to the point that I thought this race setup for closer. I wrote in countdown to the crown. The closer to watching the race was Harvey ball Bangor. I picked him second in the race. I played exact as Maximus chip with Harvey wall banger. I didn't play Harvey wall been I thought Maximus chip was that much better than them. And I thought the heavy jockey, you know, with those two what was the way to attack the race? Turns out it did meltdown pace does make the reysen in almost all accounts. Harvey wall took excellent advantage of being the only closer race that looked like it could fall apart a little bit. I didn't expect Maximus Maximus mischief to give it back. Some thoughts east coast, west coast, New York, California. Tactile horse. I don't think he's a world beater, but I think he's a pretty decent horse to come home the final three furlongs in the weather's thirty eight and free. That's not that bad because they weren't the first six one eleven to. So it's not like they went one thirteen one fourteen and walked home. I mean, they would faster the last three of the withers than they did the Swail at seven furlongs. Now that tells you the Swail was really slow late with the winter too bad late. So a good effort from tax and they're getting beat anything. It's gonna get way offer we know when the Gotham in the Wood Memorial roll around, but he's a nice horse for Danny Goggin outlet mutual Gustavo. I mean, hey qui-. It looked like he probably be loan speeding there. But magnificent McCall really wanted under Flavian Pratt. They went gunning out there. It was nice to see him just off pounce and go on. But as John White just mentioned improbable really handled Muccio Guzzo kinda held him at bay, you know, an arm's length in.

Eight hundred years ago today, Nebraska was thirty six state to ratify it and. But this was still on the global headlines. And I'll let you go with another little piece of nothing history. Sixty nine years ago. Tomorrow was the great Brink's robbery. On print straight guys walked in there. And they walked out of the nearly three million dollars. And. But I've I've reached out to have him back or if you're not doing anything much trauma to Charleston right across from the monument. You're going to be speaking about the Boston massacre could probably get him on your show prior to that. And he's also speaking about evacuation day. March seventeenth as well. If if somebody who's gonna come to Charlestown, what are a couple of the two most important things to see. I take people right down from where I live is John Harvey ball told them all about the pure and settling. Yeah. The monuments. Great. But that's you know, that's the revolution. Every history I ever open service worship to go out with in Charlestown city square. And take him to the habit. Moral Tombo, Sean how many? Yeah. And John Winthrop puritan settled here and. They couldn't find potable water. So they went to Sharma which is Boston. The monuments. Good show people forty four street. Trying to Kennedy became the knights of Columbus member there also show people. The Dexter state right across at its now. Now memorial hall, but Samuel Dexter was John Adams Secretaria war and president Adam stated his residence tweet, and it's right across from boys club at fifteen green street. Just so much history. Bradley. So whenever you wanna come round get your life found on Facebook. Let me know I walk all you around show, you everything, you know, show. You the old sugar factories to circle factories. And when I went to school, I like it was chocolates bacon at Schrafft's. Right. And then we Gary. Jerry. Windings in United farmers. So much, Bradley. There is one of the most I call Charlestown, the cornerstone of America because. Not just of the open service worship. But we stood up to hell. But also, the general court of Massachusetts began here is channel quarter of assistance again right in city square area. So here the man, I hope he's right. He must have written a book by now. Right, bobby? Yeah. I will I wrote a book of poetry, call Charlestown cornerstone of America. I'll get you a copy of it seems like you ought to write a book though. 'cause I better we'd be working on that, Bradley two. I'm on. I'm working. All the working class and the Catholic saddling here. I mean, Mike sure at Saint Francis is the fourth oldest continuous Catholic church in the country. When they sold that land to the Irish guy that they sold it to drag him from one end to the other Todd. And the power that land Bradley lot of people landing from Ireland and they were burying them because they come over. They were in coffin ships. The couldn't make the trip. But yeah, showing you there to Saint Francis to sales. It's one hundred sixty years old this year. So thanks, Bobby. Thank you. Thank you, Bradley. God bless you pal. Equalizer and Bobby the trick is I guess they told me, right? A little every day the minute you get up the first thing in the morning, you make your coffee you start, right? And doing our day. No matter what if you wanna do more. That's okay. Minimum an hour every day every day every day soon as you start skipping days. You're in deep trouble. It's kind of like the gym. I'd be curious to know if there is a graveyard with markers for people who died on the coffin ships coming from the potato famine. Did they in fact have markers buried in unmarked graves? Six one seven two five four ten thirty do chat. Now want to talk about the. Speech state of the city state of the city speech Marty Walsh. I was super impressed. I thought this was a presidential candidate level speech. And I just I kinda was proud of being in Massachusetts. I thought you know, what we do live in a good place. We have people who care, and I like it. There was a lot of talk about diversity. I know a lot of you. Don't like diversity a lot of you work against diversity you vote against diversity. So that so he probably didn't like that speech. But I was quite proud. And the am I think he's getting better at speaking. It was great to see Charlie Baker there. It's great to see them. They're on the opposite sides of the aisle yet they worked together they're going down to DC together and show those morons down in DC that you can work together. And when you do it's a good thing. And we'll we'll play a little chunk of that the finale of that speech for you again. So you can get a sense of these sort of new Marty wall speaking orator, if you will it's.
