We have a broadcast legend in the house. None other than chris matthews hardball. Good evening. i'm chris. Drive is hard balls chris. Matthews will join us in just a few moments. And i will confess. I am a big fan of chris. Matthews i've watched his show for years and when it was cancelled. I like what i would always have. Harvard mit watch it especially during the trump years when i needed some voice of sanity to guide me through those days and so when i got word that chris has a new memoir out called this country my life and politics and history. I knew i had to talk to him. And i was not disappointed was nervous. Yes when you're interviewing the guy who's famous for asking the hardball questions who's interviewed thousands and thousands of people in his career who's a big columnist and journalist. Yeah he want to bring your a game. But chris made it quite easy. He's a super relax. Nice guy. I think my only issue is. It's pretty hard to get it in a word edgewise. Because he knows how to talk but he's interesting so i think you're going to really enjoy this interview. We talked about a ton his upbringing just outside of philadelphia his transition from a republican to a democrat early in his life growing up as a young capitol hill aide and speechwriter and he was also a capitol hill. Police officer we talked about what he learned from. Such senate luminaries tip o'neill and then chris of course gets way into current events. He offers his advice to nancy. Pelosi in the democrats he talks about potentially upcoming election pitting. Donald trump against joe biden again. And then i even ask him some horrible questions like why did he leave hardball so abruptly and he answers that and we also find out. What is next for chris matthews. Will he be back on television. Or is he just going to continue as a writer. He has lots and lots of wisdom here. Such an interesting guy. I was very happy to have on the show. So without further. Ado i bring you. "First. Twenty twenty one. I'm russ and here's what you need to know about today. Well first of all it is world smile day today. And i know what you're thinking. How can i smile. I'm wearing a mask. Yeah there's so many places that are still wearing the masks. It's difficult to see anybody smile. I think i remember what smiles. Look like i zoom. Yeah but you know that is the first thing you think about probably right somebody smiling but you also the second thing or maybe even the first thing who knows that you're thinking about is that little yellow circle with the is in the little smile right. We'll basically that little yellow circle with the two is was created by this guy. Harvey ball a commercial artists from massachusetts. Well he created this back in nineteen sixty three. He was working for an agency and This insurance agency basically contacted his agency to say we need something to do. That's going to help improve internal morale. So harvey did the sketch. He's like well. You know everybody feels good with a smile so he put this sketch. Did it in black put a yellow background and created buttons. Those buttons that they created for the insurance company eventually landed in a store in philadelphia and then they started to get mass produced specifically at the store in philadelphia. They decided well. You know what we really got to capitalize on this and we do it quick because the happy face buttons started to outsell the peace sign buttons and those signs. Come on the sixties. Those were very popular right so this guy was like we gotta move on this quickly. We really need to capitalize on this happy face thing. So they put it on everything shirts bumper stickers more buttons. Just never you could think of. They sold a ton of the smiley faces. And maybe maybe that's how we started emojis. Not really sure. I didn't do the research on that. Because i was looking at the sixties and happy face buttons. Okay it is also fire pump day today and if you're thinking about fire houses and fire pups you're thinking of a dalmatian see. I'm telling you a lot of things that you're thinking about today. I'm psychic to october first. We'll just pretend that it's national psychic day. Yeah dalmatians the reason. Why you think of them right now is not because i'm psychic. It's because that is the actual mascot for fire houses and many of them have these way back when well that'd be have fire pup. Was it just for the like emotional support of the firefighters know. They actually served an interesting purpose. So win the fire trucks. These are the old horse-drawn carriage firetrucks when they would leave the firehouse. The dogs would go outside and start barking so that people would be warned and then they would run alongside the fire trucks or carriages and they'd bark to get people out of the way so they were like the for sirens. I guess you'd say so fire pups it is their day today. It is also manufacturers day will actually national manufacturing day today and according to the manufacturing institute. This is what they're telling me that there is a big change in manufacturing a right now basically. Everything is going from dumb products to smart products. And what i mean by that is well connected to the internet now. Yeah a ton of stuff is being hooked up to the internet. It's like you go to the store like by my blanket up to the internet. Well everything is going that route and they have confirmed. It will why this day. And what are they talking about. Why are they doing manufacturing date. Well it is actually to raise awareness for manufacturing careers. they're encouraging more people to look into it like thousands of companies. They're trying to get them to open their doors to educational institutions around the nation. So that students parents teachers and community leaders can take a look at what's going on there and hopefully head down that path of manufacturing by the way right now manufacturing because of the pandemic is down about three point five percent this year. What is not down this year. Is cookie production specifically home cookie production. Yeah homemade cookie day today those are up way more than three point five percent and what are people baking. Well number five is sugar. Cookies number four. Most popular cookies is peanut butter blossoms. That's the peanut butter cookie with hershey's kiss in the middle. Those things are amazing Oatmeal cookie is next followed by peanut butter as number two so peanut butter really dominates this list on a chocolate chip cookie though takes the number one spot. Okay so on wednesday. I mentioned that it was national. Coffee today is international. Copy day which should be a bigger celebration but now starbucks is in giving anything away for free at least nothing that i could find so hopefully you got two cups so you can have that second cup today yeah. Coffee is celebrated two days wednesday and friday. Today is about the international coffee organization. You can learn more about that at ici. Oh dot org. Basically today is a day to recognize. All the farmers roasters baristas coffee shop owners. All those people that do the hard work to create an serve that beverage that we all love okay. As i mentioned it is october. And there's plenty of things to celebrate in october including october fest. Now we'll get into that as the month proceeds here unless i have too much beer and pretzels in which i will forget to cover october fest but hopefully i don't i we'll see what happens. there's also other celebrations that happen in october. Let's run through a few of those. There's so many. I cannot mention them. All it is insane. How many national celebrations there are in october. Some of them make sense some of them. Don't yeah let's take a look at his first of all. It is adopt a shelter dog month. That is also aids awareness month. Breast cancer awareness month. It is caffeine addiction recovery month. I'm going to say this one makes sense since we just wrapped up to coffee days. And maybe this is a good thing Go sober for october. I get that they wanted to do something. That rhymes there. But it's october fest. So when really makes sense for october. It's halloween safety month. That would make sense. Because you'd hate to have that one in july that would make sense. It's national bully prevention month. I guess you know maybe because you're in costume. We'll say that that one works national. Read month that one makes sense because of october fest. National liver awareness month. Well that makes sense. Because i guess of october fest is also vegetarian. Month and pretzels and beer. Like vegetarians can have that right. So there you go balan makes sense as well all right. We gotta take a look at our weekend and some of the events that are happening this weekend. We start with national fried scallops. Day on saturday. That's delicious national. Name your car day. Last year i road rage. Randy's driving with randy podcast on the show. If you've never checked his show go do it. It's awesome. I also national steel workers recognition day and national produce. Misting day which i can only imagine is about those little masters in the grocery store. They deserve day. That's right is national boyfriend day and national day birthdays this weekend. Steam turns seventy on saturday. Kelly ripa turns fifty one on saturday as well. Sunday neve campbell. "Upon which he had painted to black ovals and a long semi-circular curve a smiley face. Now it could be argued that the icon of a circle containing a smile is probably not even something a person can claim they invented most kids win scribbling out there. I stick figure cran drawings usually top those basic bodies with the smiley face and they do it instinctively. it's pure and simple and almost universal but harvey ball was the first to see its potential as morale-booster and maybe even the first to put those black lines on a yellow background and his insurance company clients was even more pleased with it. They had one hundred buttons made with the image on it and management past the buttons out to employees whenever they noticed someone was smiling while they worked and with that the floodgates burst wide because neither harvey nor his clients ever trademarked the image. Just about everyone. With an ounce of entrepreneurial spirit started to make and sell all manner of merchandise with the smiley face upon it posters. Check t-shirts check coffee. Mugs you bet and harvey. Oh he didn't mind. Honestly how ironic. Wooded of ben if the guy who invented the smiley face took the world to court over the use of such an iconic symbol no harvey just sort of rolled with it. He sold reproductions of his original painting. He did signings at conventions and even started a charity. A world smile foundation amazingly even the paycheck for that. Original design job was less than ideal and yet harvey never complained after all his client had promised to pay him for his time. And that's exactly what they did.
