Lori Harvey & Damson Idris Are Officially Over. I Don't Think Anyone Is Surprised
"Welcome to another edition of Convo Over Cigars. I'm your host, Derrick Andre Flemming on a Friday. Let's talk about a big story right now. It's over. According to sources, Damson Idris and Lori Harvey have officially thrown in the towel on their one year relationship. They both issued a joint statement confirming this on, I think it was IG. Now the couple reportedly started dating around December of 2022, later confirming that they were actually together. Damson Idris is the actor and model from the popular FX series Snowfall, which aired its finale on April 19th of 2023. Now, Lori Harvey, for those of you who are not familiar with this young lady, she is the 26 year old stepdaughter of comedian and TV personality Steve Harvey. In a statement released by Damson and Lori Harvey, they said that we are at a point in our lives where our individual paths require our full attention and dedication. So basically we split remaining friends and with the utmost respect for each other. I just think Lori Harvey needs to just take a chill. This woman, you know, and I don't judge, that's not what I do here on Convo Over Cigars, but you know, the past relationship with Michael B. Jordan, other relationships that she has been in with high profile celebrities, we're not gonna really throw under the bus or call names, but she has had her share of celebrity boyfriends. And you know, like I said, this is the stepdaughter of Steve Harvey. I just think she needs to find herself. You know, a lot of times when you get out of a relationship, instead of jumping right back into another relationship, you probably just need to heal. Probably just need to take some time and say, you know, take a deep breath and just be like, I just need to recoup from this because relationships are work, man. You have to recuperate. You have to, you know, get back into that mental space where you need to be. It seems as if she leaves one relationship and jumps right back into another relationship. And I think that's why they never last. So my advice, not that she asked for it, but this is just my opinion here on Convo Over Cigars, Lori Harvey, just take a break and do Lori, you know. Take a painting class or something, you know. Take up some, you know, skiing or something. Find a hobby, man. You don't have to necessarily define yourself by who's on your arm or by trying to find love. Obviously you're not ready to be in a long -term committed relationship. I'm just saying. You guys have been locked in to another edition of Convo Over Cigars. I am your host, Derrick Andre Flemming. I'm hoping that everyone has a fantastic Friday. Take care, guys.

It's the first date It's like going to chilies. I don't mind it. I have a very special place in my heart for applebees because Not the dollaritas the dollaritas were mid but they have good drinks nonetheless And they have not better than fridays, but we're actually I don't know anymore I haven't that's fridays back in the day Coming up. I mean, you know, I mean, it's it's like it's like some women Who are not happy when a guy comes back because he had a good time. That's all it is That's all it is, man So cheesecake to me that that one that you're delusional ma Of course delusional. Yeah, exactly. Ain't no reason why people want to talk about cheesecake about of them Not wanting to go to cheesecake because no why it's not exclusive They can't put it on the ig stories. Oh, we're the cheesecake girl and flex on the other people These type of women that made this list are girls that want to flex on the gram They're the same women that agree with with surely I was whining about trying to go cheesecake. I like cheesecake leave my cheesecake Why we gotta fight for cheesecake great said it Thanks good old -fashioned oreo cheesecake. Let's talk like, you know, dude A question now, let me ask you a question. Yeah Which cheesecake is better juniors or cheetah factory, you know That's a great question because I don't know about juniors anymore, man, because I feel like it's losing its edge Wait, what what were the two juniors juniors or cheesecake factory cheesecake? Okay. I recently had juniors This year you never had juniors because I can't talk on it a friend of mine invited to eat at juniors And so I had their cheesecake because i've never been there as a new yorker Never been there, but that was my first time having it. It's very good. I have not had cheesecake cheesecake in a very long time so Based on my recent knowledge I would have to say Juniors because of the softer filling because I feel like sometimes Cheesecake cheesecake tends to be a little firmer Not necessarily hard but firmer But I do like both I will eat both i've given to me I prefer the cheesecakes cheesecake I mean they have like 10 ,000 different flavors. That's what i'm saying. They have 10 ,000 different flavors You can't go wrong with juniors You know, it's like if we're talking classic cheesecake, that's my answer But since cheesecake has like I love their oreo cheesecake their oreo cheesecake All right, yeah about that time Said he said give him your hand on my boy city 55 my private page city POV my public page and tik tok hasheem eight four five Is my name? "All right, all right, all right, all right. Welcoming you guys to another lovely episode of On The Record Podcast. I am DJ Intense, your host the most. And to the left of me, I have I am Walt. What's up, Walt? I'm about to say another word, my guy. If you guys heard earlier, you know, we were just doing some things off cameras. They're off the record. Things we don't, we're not going to bring on the record. And if we are, you're not going to get it. Unless you paid for it to Patreon. You know? Yeah, me too. That voice you hear right now, but there's no other than Ceddi said, what's up Ceddi? The infamous C -E -D. What's up people? How you doing people? I'm doing all right, I'm doing all right, man. You know, we took some time off. It was Labor Day weekend. Yeah. And then the final weekend, which is work weekend. Dude, we were work, work, work, work, work. Nonstop. Dude, I just figured they don't. Almost 90 hours of work. OT, OT. Man. One day was 20 hours of work. That's the state job. I can't wait till you quit that job. You and I both, brother. I need to make some money, but working like a slave ain't it, man? Nah. Bob Brock just said it. You think that you can get by with this hard work alone? Nah, you're fooling yourself. You're fooling yourself. Used to do that, but now you're doing that. It's a lie. It's a lie. It's a myth. All people is you do hard work, and you'll become a successor, that's all. Listen, reality is in this country, in America, you have to do a lot of grime. You gotta do a lot of collaboration. Depending on how you wanna do it, but most of the time, all those people who are billionaires and trillionaires are the ones who did the most foul -ish humanly possible to get what they're at right now in life. Listen, right now we're at over 180 days in the writer's strike and the actor's strike right now. And it could have ended this right now. This thing should have been handled already. $50 million for both unions. And now they're gonna get a loss of over $300 to $500 million because of this strike. And you have people like Drew Barrymore's punk ass. Well, she reneged on it though. She had to, because dude, she was getting the business with the WGA and the SGA. And it's separate, you know. Even... Bill Maher's bitch ass too, man, was... I didn't get the damn thing off the running. Was, oh, I don't need no writers, I'll be our show. Look, dude, your show sucks. The Seddie Swear Counter is in full effect. There you go, you have one. You can do like a ding sound from now on for my swears. I'm gonna keep it calm. I'm gonna keep it professional. Seddie the Sailor Man. I can't swish, come on. Listen, man, I'm just telling you, when Seddie get that spinach boy, man, we poppin' ice today. Oh, yeah. Little bird watch out. Now, but on some real issues, like dude, Bill Maher, the guy who said, I'm not a field n -word, I'm a house n -word, and who crapped on Stan Lee after he died and stuff, and says a bunch of other ridiculously retarded things, says he's gonna do a show. Stan Lee who? Marvel comic Stan Lee. Oh, Stan Lee, oh. That's what Bill Maher said. Yo, he be going extra heavy trying to relate to us blacks. You're a not house n -word. You're at the table, bro. You got the good chair. You got the good piece of chicken. He used to be down by the dam, but nowadays, man, it's horrible. He's just, you know, he's trying. What the legend Paul Mooney said, everybody wants to be black, so it's time to be black? Listen, you think Paul Mooney is trying to be black and competent? Hell no. I want to be in a gated community area. What's wrong with you? Like he says, everybody wants to be black. He listen to King Koon, so he know what that's about. Yeah, but Bill Maher is doing his show still, which I think it was crap with writers. It's going to be crap about writers. And then, you know, you're going to have to hire writers who are not non -union writers. We're going to be scabs. We're going to pretty much destroy their any chance of them getting actual work when the strike is done. If you get caught. Well, if you are what you say you are, then have no fear. Even if you're on YouTube and you want to get a chance of being in the industry, you can't do no reviews. No, no movie reviews, no TV show reviews, nothing. There's a strike. You doing that? You will be known and accounted for when you want to get your membership. And trust me, you don't want those problems. But my thing is, if there was already YouTubers like successful already doing movie reviews and being credible and stuff like that, that won't affect them. Is it already locked in like a partnership or whatever with certain movies? Then they could do it. As long as they get the permission from their respective union. OK. If they do something brand new, if we're coming out with The Exorcist coming out next week, they can't do no review for that at all. Oh, wow. Wah wah. Listen, I can't go into it because I want to become in that union because I want to be a voice actor. You want to sell out. I get it. So I can't speak on it at all. No, no, no. He's not selling out. No, he wants to. He wants to. No, he doesn't want to sell out. You want the Disney money. No, I want to buy in. He wants to buy in. Oh, yes. You want to buy in, you got to sell out, right? No, the license is fucking me, bro. I'm just saying. The license, the thing to get a SAG card, it's over $3 ,000 to get a SAG card. And you have to get that SAG card in order to get some work and residuals and all that stuff. That's just what it is. Listen, man, listen, Harvey Weinstein's in prison, bro. He can't get to you, my guy. He can't get to you, my guy. Listen, man, don't take that hotel meeting, bro. Am I Rose McGowan? Shoot it. It's either a Zoom call. I'm actually Judd. It's either a Zoom call or a posh Beverly Hills restaurant or a Permell Studios, wherever that super creep was out here making his rounds. But you don't got to worry about that no more. Filthy behavior. One of the girls was saying like, yeah, when I said no more hanky panky, you know. He felt a way. Yeah, you want that rolling letter to there, don't you? My guy, how could he feel a way? You've been imposing your will on these ladies for a long time. Speaking of entertainment, you had a concert this weekend, right? Yeah, yeah. I was, you know, I was like. This guy was really outside. I was like, I was like, I was like. What concert was this? I was like. Let me tell you. Go ahead, say it. I was like from the acting sheriff up north, back to back out here, you know. Yes, so for all the first time, longtime listeners, and you know, last time listening to how evidence goes, I had a couple of shows. This past Thursday, I went to an event that was sponsored by Spotify for up and coming artists. I saw three, three very, very talented artists. The main artist I went to see goes by Kamari. He's an artist that I discovered around COVID. He has a lot of like influences. He reminds me of like a Frank Ocean. He's really that, you know, artist type dude. And he put out this great, incredible album called A Brief Nirvana, which I advise everybody to check out. His name is Kamari, K -H -A -M -A -R -I. Highly recommend him. And I also saw these two other artists from the UK, St. Harrison and Elmin. That's my boy. And overall, it was a great experience, very, you know. It was at SOB, Sound of Brazil in New York City. Very intimate setting, great turnout, great energy.

A highlight from 1239. Bitcoin ETF Approved By October? Bloomberg Intelligence INTERVIEW
"All right, so today we're going to dive into some interesting stuff. I think you guys are going to like it. It'll be breaking down some of the ETF news that, of course, we heard last week and, of course, some of the interesting aspects around what was going on with BlackRock. We'll break all that down today. I think you guys are going to love it. My name is Paul Baron. Welcome back into Tech Path. Joining me today is Eric Balshunis, who is a senior ETF analyst over at Bloomberg Intelligence. Great to have you on the show. Great to be here. Thank you. Hey, Eric. So a couple of things I wanted to kind of touch on. Obviously, some of the things that everybody was looking at last week was, of course, the delays. The letters started coming in on Friday. We saw all that happening. There was a little bit of a slowness of the BlackRock news. Just your opinion. Why do you feel like that was happening in the way that it was happening? Yeah. I don't understand because BlackRock was up after some other people, or before them, rather. And so it didn't appear as though the delays were chronologically rate -based. It didn't appear as though the delays were based on size. There was no rhyme or reason. It seemed random. And BlackRock came a little later. And the weird thing is, on the site where they consolidate all of them, BlackRock was never added. Yet, on a different place, they did delay BlackRock. So I've long equated what I'm doing here to Jim Garrison, played by Kevin Costner in the movie JFK. There's all these things that could be something, like did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone? And in the movie, he uncovers all this, some legit, some not legit, circumstantial evidence that there was multiple shooters and a conspiracy. So this reminds me of one of those things that probably means nothing in terms of that. That said, just the fact that BlackRock filed is big, and that does mean something. And obviously we can get into that, but certainly BlackRock getting delayed and Fidelity, it shows that they just delayed them all. For a minute there, there was a thought that would delay some of the smaller ones and just approve BlackRock and or Fidelity. But again, we had thought all along this was going to be delayed, because this lawsuit happened like two days before. So it was not a surprise. If they're going to put them out, I think they need more time to work with the issuers and develop some kind of a game plan and make sure all of the T's are crossed and the I's are dotted. So that would not happen in two days. So no biggie. All right. So you mentioned, obviously, the fact that BlackRock is filing in the first place. That's really the huge news here. When you look at BlackRock's position of filing, along with other major proponents, we'll just use there Fidelity as well. And you look at the likelihood with this, obviously, they have a very low ratio of losses when it comes to our non -confirmed ETFs that they've filed. What would make, first of all, what would make BlackRock to have this much confidence to go ahead in this market, the way that this market has been evolving with Chair Gensler and everything that's been happening with the SEC, it's not, it doesn't feel like it's a slam dunk. Why would BlackRock go out on a limb? Yeah. So we have a couple of theories. The best, I mean, BlackRock is a publicly traded company. They're looking to make money. Larry Fink has to appeal to his board that he's doing new things. And it does feel like BlackRock was full on into ESG. That kind of has died a bit. And it seems like this might be taking its place in terms of something BlackRock can do to grow its business, because you cannot make money battling Vanguard in terms of selling like cheap beta ETFs, because even at three basis points on $100 billion, it's not a ton of money and it's not a high growth area. It's growth for assets, but not necessarily for revenue. So we think they're obviously motivated by having a new area they can launch in. Vanguard will probably never launch a Bitcoin ETF, so they're worried about Vanguard there. They could charge a decent fee and they can make it have a new revenue stream. So I think that's largely their motivation. I also think Larry Fink, in my opinion, has heard some back channel that he thinks the U .S. is losing the sort of global battle to be a leader in the crypto space. And I think that frustrates him to a degree. So I think those are two reasons. Back to the revenue, though, think about this gold ETF GLD was launched in 2004, I believe. To this day, it's still the third highest revenue generating ETF, even though there's many cheaper ones. And the reason is, if you could be the big one that has all the liquidity or a lot of it, that gives you pricing power. You don't ever really need to lower your fee because there's just so many investors who just prize liquidity above all else. So we think BlackRock thinks they have a shot to be the one, the GLD of Bitcoin, and that that's going to be a nice little business for them. And we were talking, if it had the same assets as GLD, it would be, again, top five revenue generating ETF. GBTC, by the way, which isn't even an ETF, if it were, it would make the same money as GLD. So like two, GLD and GBTC are in the top five if you ranked all ETFs by revenue. And so I just think that's their primary motivation. I think they also like, what they tell you publicly is they're in the business of sort of democratizing investing and bringing down frictional costs. And I do believe they believe that and they would do that in this case. That said, I think revenue is definitely a motivator. Yeah, for sure. OK, so a couple of things you mentioned there. One, of course, is Larry Fink's position around ESG. He has been a very strong proponent of sustainable governance throughout the last few years. You know, in his letter to his investors over the past couple of years, that's been a big part of it. Now you move into Bitcoin. Bitcoin often accused as one of the most non -friendly carbon neutral tokens and projects out there. But yet at the same time, you have BlackRock potentially on the lead position here for an ETF. How do they balance that out? I get it that they've kind of backed off the ESG message. But how do you balance that out to the investors? Look, I mean, I'm just going to be frank. A lot of ESG, if you get too moralizing when it comes to ESG, it's tough because guaranteed you do something that makes you a hypocrite. It's just the way it is. So I think they backed off a little. And ESG ETFs haven't really sold that great. Even BlackRock took money out of its own ESG ETF from its models. Let's just face it. All this evidence is pretty strong that the term ESG is under pressure and ESG investing, I think, is also going to face some headwinds for like, what are we really doing here? How does it actually impact anything? It just, you know, I've seen this happen. This trend gets a little ahead of its skis. The media love this story. They really hyped up ESG. It's going to save the world. The millennials are into it. And then, boom, it started underperforming and it got political. And so reality set in and it's now going to be probably relegated to a very niche status in the ETF world. One to two percent market cap of the total. I mean, I look at it just in the sense of, hey, it's a capitalist market. Capitalists are going to do things that capitalists do, and that is find where the market flows. And this is obviously what's happening right now. A couple of things you had mentioned around the potential of this ETF going through. I know your percentage right now with you and James has been climbing. Have you changed your position since last Friday before the holiday in terms of percentage of approval? No. Seventy -five percent factored in the delay on Friday. We assumed that. We'd be shocked if they approved them. That said, we went from 65 percent to 75 after Grayscale. And the reason for that is in our 65 percent, we had a 70 percent chance likelihood that Grayscale would win based on our senior legal analyst. So the fact that they won gave us a little extra juice. The other thing is it was three to oh in terms of how that lawsuit was, the ruling came down. Two of the judges came from Democrats. That's really important because there are political workings here. Gensler has a Democratic boss. He is a Democrat. And if enough Democrats start to just move over on this issue and shift to the middle or to the crypto side, it makes Gensler's position more politically untenable by the minute. And so he could keep moving the goalposts legally, I think, as long as he wants. But it's going to begin to look more and more desperate and he's going to face more backlash. And this is a big deal for us. So we thought it was the decisiveness of the ruling, the language, like everything you said has to go out the window. Your whole reason for denial is vacated. And the fact that two Democrats signed on to that, huge. Then the second part was the media attention. Once every six or seven years, do I see ABC News or CNN have an ETF in the headline? I know this because ETFs are in their own little underground. Every now and then, though, something big happens. And ETFs were all over mainstream news. New York Times, ABC, Washington Post. This also matters because the headlines were like, SEC loses, paves way for spot Bitcoin ETFs. Well, now people are just sort of thinking this is going to happen because the New York Times said it and people on Capitol Hill read this. They don't necessarily read crypto trade publications. mainstreamness So the of the media attention and how they were presenting it also made us think that the pressure would increase. And our senior litigation analyst looked at the legal side and determined the SEC has very little wiggle room. That was his words. So when you add the PR aspect to the legal aspect, that's where we upped it a little bit to 75%. That still leaves 25 % for this theory, which is that Gensler being potentially a stubborn guy and or just truly, truly not feeling this should ever happen, even though, again, the stuff that's come out is way more dangerous, 2x Bitcoin futures, come on. Anyway, what he might do is he might lock into some other reason, like custody. I don't know what the custody is safe, then he might start to look at how custody could delay these further. And he may make that the next denial. Like I said, it's going to look more and more desperate every time they latch on to a new issue, but it's possible. And that's why we leave the 25 % opening for that. I want to jump over and onto the Grayscale side of things. From an analyst position, and you look at Grayscale's current scenario playing out, obviously there's a little bit of lead time here. Maybe they do some changes in the way they submit a spot ETF. What is in the future of Grayscale's potential of getting into the ETF game? So Grayscale is going to be tricky. We have this phrase that Grayscale may win the case and lose the race. I'll make some of those things rhyme if you're a headline writer. But anyway, Grayscale is a private placement trust that was just for accredited investors. We've never seen anything like that just, boom, become an ETF. We've seen mutual funds convert to ETFs. I think one closed -end fund converted to ETF, separate accounts, but I guess it's possible. It's just unprecedented. And given you just embarrassed the SEC, it's possible the SEC says, let's make you refile and get in the back of the line, and we'll prove all the other ones first. So this has been somewhat of our theory all along in why BlackRock filed. BlackRock saw a scenario where, I doubt the SEC told them this. That would be a little, I think that's illegal, but let's just say BlackRock thought of this whole scenario, which is, you could see this is a pretty viable thesis. Hey, let's file, because if the SEC loses to Grayscale, you know they're going to be pissed off at Grayscale pursuing them and embarrassing them. And maybe if we're sitting there waiting, just, oh, hey, by the way, SEC, if you want to use us and our new surveillance sharing agreement that we put in here, which is kind of novel, as an excuse as to like why you never approved Grayscale, and you can make them wait, and you can leave this whole thing with the adults in the room of BlackRock, right, you know we're not going to mess this up. I could see that appealing to the SEC, and I could see BlackRock seeing how that would appeal to the SEC. So you get to save face and kind of enact a little revenge on Grayscale in the process. Now, possibly Grayscale could sue them again for that, I don't know. But I see how that would possibly be one of the reasons BlackRock thought they had a route to approval first. Interesting. Well, I think in that kind of scenario, I mean, it makes sense in the essence of this being such a political landscape as it is right now, because you're right, it's all really kind of a card game right now, especially around the issue of ETFs. I want to get into the potential of the impact on the market. And I remember in a podcast you had mentioned potential here around $20 billion in the first couple of months, $150 billion in the first year or two. When you look at that market, do you feel like that is where this, this I'm assuming with BlackRock leading the way as kind of the premier ETF? Yeah, if you have a BlackRock ETF, okay, that's prime time. I mean, we have a saying on the team that BlackRock and Vanguard ETFs are the new IBM. And what I mean by that is if you're a 65 year old financial advisor and you were a broker 30 years ago, it used to be said, you could never get fired for buying IBM. It's just, it's just too good. It's like all American company. No, none of your clients are going to be like, what did you get me into? Now it's, you can't get fired for buying a BlackRock or Vanguard ETF. It's just, it's too good a deal. It's just too bulletproof. Whereas if you went into some crazy hedge fund and stuff, they make it mad, right? But BlackRock and Vanguard ETFs, solid. So once you put it into a BlackRock ETF, it sort of goes into this, it elevates it, I think, for the financial advisors who are like maybe willing to use as a hedge or an alternative, or they have younger, you know, their, their clients' kids are into it. And they're like, ah, now, now I feel comfortable, safe and willing to do this because I use ETFs in the rest of my portfolio. I trust BlackRock. I certainly don't want to custody it myself. They're going to do it. I feel safe with them. The fee's not that bad. It costs one basis point to trade, to trade. I think that's very powerful. And so when I come up with the 150 billion, here's the math, right? One is that's about how much gold ETFs have. Two is if you take advisors and wealth managers, they have $30 trillion that they run for the rich boomers of America, basically. If only 0 .5 % of that comes over, that is 150 billion. So that's, I think, pretty fair because I think you have some advisors who might allocate 2%, but then some that just find it to be repelling and do nothing. So I think 0 .5 to me seems like a pretty fair number. Even it could be low. That's how I get to the 150 billion over time. And gold is about there. So GBTC has 20 billion. So I think you could, let's just say that moves over instantly. That's where I get to the 28 billion pretty soon because either the people move or it just converts over. And then you get BlackRock Fidelity, you're adding to that. And I think also they'll steal some business from the exchanges, frankly. I think if you're in a crypto exchange and you're charging 30 to 150 basis points per trade, this ETF trading on NYSE at one basis point is going to be appealing. So I also think institutions could get into it, especially the one that becomes very liquid because I wrote a book called The Institutional ETF Toolbox. And institutions don't need ETFs generally. They can get everything on their own in separate accounts for almost cheaper than ETF. And they like it private. They feel like ETF is kind of like the dirty public pool down the street. That said, what the ETF does have is even an institution can't resist this liquidity. And it's also anonymity. So if an institution wants to get short or long crypto quickly, it would use this most liquid Bitcoin ETF as a way to put that trade on. We see that happen with GLD all the time. If you look at GLD or SPY, these are things that institutions can get. But the liquidity in them is great because they can go in there with no contracts, anonymous. They don't move the market and they can just get that into their portfolio quickly. So the most liquid spot Bitcoin ETF, I think, will even draw big fish in. So you add a lot of that together and I think you're looking at that much money. Now, let's say there's another FTX that could delay some of this. But I was pretty impressed at how quickly Bitcoin, how resilient Bitcoin was to FTX. It was in the gutter both PR and price wise for a little bit, but not that long. Like I said, Bitcoin, even though I don't understand every aspect of it, I respect its resiliency. It just keeps coming back. Yeah, it's one of those that has made its way finally into the mainstream. Now, I think a lot of this has been legitimized with companies like BlackRock obviously getting involved. But to your point, before we go on to other ideas around this, because there are other components key here that might make sense for how successful BlackRock might be. I wanted to go to James Saffert's post here, one of your colleagues there. Some of the key dates that, let me zoom in on that, you're going to look at a couple of dates here. You've got iShares coming in on 10 .17. There's quite a few coming up right here in the middle of October and even early October with GlobalX. They've got a refiling, I think, coming in. Anyway, when do you think the next potential timing would be for a lot of these potential ETFs to maybe get a green light, if there was a window here? Yeah, so I've got to be honest, I like October because, I don't know, first of all, it gives the SEC two months to work this out, roughly. October is when the Bitcoin futures ETF launched. We're also going to have a whole slew of Ether futures ETFs in October. As you get closer to Christmas, I think maybe the odds go down a little because the holidays hit. October is just a very vibrant month in general, and you've got a slew of deadlines coming up in October. But I sometimes put the deadlines aside and I think that, because if we're going strictly on deadlines, and they want to punt, punt, punt, the first deadline is ARK in January, final deadline where they have to approve or deny. And I don't know if they want to put ARK out first, and that'd be two months ahead of anybody else. They'd be playing Kingmaker. And I think after Bitto, they let Bitto out first like a week before Valkyrie, and Bitto has 95 % of all the volume assets. So I don't think they want to play Kingmaker here. So my guess is they're going to scrap the timeline and we're going to wake up one day and hear probably going to be a scoop or from Coindesk Wall Street Journal or something, or Bloomberg hopefully, that the SEC has decided to say okay to these and they're going to work it out. They'll launch in two weeks. That's my gut. I just don't know if they punt in October and they keep punting and they get to January and they actually deny ARK. I don't know. That makes it feel like just every other denial that's ever existed. So I don't know. I'm leaning towards we're just going to wake up one morning and we're good. I could be wrong. How does this play out, Eric? If that were the case, let's go the absolute negative side of this and they do punt and they finally go to the deadline. They don't push out ARK. They basically do a denial. What does that look like on BlackRock's record? Does BlackRock even worry about that at all or are they like, hey, this is getting out of hand here? You mean if BlackRock's denied in October again? No. I mean, look, what can they do? There's not a ton they can do. Well, if they approve others and let BlackRock, that would upset them, I think. But as long as they're in the group, their main goal is to be outburst. I think their goal is to be one of the ones launched on day one. So as long as that happens, whether it's in October or frankly next year, I'm sure they're fine with that. Now, I think the longer you wait, the longer you get into the situation of what I think also bothers Larry Fink, which is the US is behind the rest of the world in this big time. They've got spot Bitcoin ETFs all over the world and they work fine and they have less liquidity from big time market makers like we have here. So if they can work well during overseas a period like FTX and the percent premiums are pretty tight, they're going to work here. And this is why ETFs are so good. They allow arbitrage. And so I think by releasing the ETF in the US sooner rather than later, it just makes a lot of sense in terms of that race with the rest of the world. But again, Genzer clearly is tough. But the last SEC guy is Jay Clayton. And he said on CNBC after the Grayscale ruling that they have to approve them. It's inevitable. JP Morgan, my colleagues in the sell side, who I'll just say this. I feel we stick our necks out a little more and we're trying to be progressive. JP Morgan now finally after Grayscale says, yeah, they're probably going to approve them like, well, OK, well, welcome to the club. We've been here for a little while. Yeah. Very conservative position. Yeah. And Bernstein said the same thing. But again, as you get these bigger banks actually coming out, again, the narrative then becomes the SEC is approving them. And so, again, it's almost like a self -fulfilling prophecy at some point, especially, again, as you see headlines in The New York Times, it paves way, paves way.

Over the course of our conversation at the L .A. offices of The Hollywood Reporter, the 59 -year -old and I discussed his unexpected path to comedy and the origin of his unusual stage name, his occasional forays into dramatic acting in films such as 2007's Talk to Me, 2008's Cadillac Records, and 2017's First Reformed, his debut novel, Flipping Boxcars, co -written with Alan Eisenstock, which was inspired by a grandfather he never met, and which Amistad, a division of HarperCollins, will release on September 12th, plus much more. And so, without further ado, let's go to that conversation.

The Bill Simmons Podcast
A highlight from Part 1: USAs World Cup Collapse, Basebrawls, Jets Optimism, Life in The G-League and The OC 20 Years Later | with Gabe York and Zoe Simmons
"Coming up, an unexpected two -part podcast cameo from me. It's next. We're also brought to you by the Ringer Podcast Network, where we turned over Sean Fennesey and Amanda Dobbins' big picture feed to Brian Raftery. It's a narrative podcast called, Do We Get to Win This Time? How Hollywood Made the Vietnam War. You can find it on the big picture starting on Tuesday. And it is an idea I'm really excited about because it came from a class that I did as a senior in college in 1992. Me and my friend Horgs talked a movies professor into doing a special Vietnam War movies class where we watched basically every Vietnam War movie that had been made up to 1992 and then tried to write a big picture term paper about it. And the thing that was really fascinating about that class and something that stuck with me was just that whole concept of Hollywood reinventing the entire Vietnam experience under the premise of, Did We Get to Win This Time? So we got Brian involved and he turned the idea into an awesome, awesome podcast. I even went and dug up the term paper that I wrote 31 years ago. I thought it was gonna be horrendous. It wasn't bad. I was kind of proud of myself, retroactively 31 years later. Anyway, Do We Get to Win This Time? How Hollywood Made the Vietnam War. It is gonna be in the big picture podcast starting on Tuesday. So that's one piece of business. Second, new rewatchables on Monday night. It is the 300th movie that we've done. It's a special one. We're doing National Lampoon's Vacation. It was time. Meet Chris Ryan, Van Lathan. Yeah, and Van was pushing for it because we wanted to do Christmas Vacation during the holidays and you can't do Christmas Vacation. If we do National Lampoon's Vacation, super fun. Can't wait for you to listen to it. And we'll be running the video at some point on the YouTube channel, youtube .com slash Bill Simmons, where we put up a whole bunch of rewatchables podcasts in case you missed it. Boogie Nights is up there now. Goodfellas, Independence Day, just a slew of them. So if you're bored and you wanna throw on some rewatchables and watch us make fun of each other, there you go. Last but not least, I don't wanna say this is the most important, but it's certainly the thing I spent the most time on. Our documentary that we did about the G League with Religion of Sports and Ringer Films, we combined, and it is premiering on Tuesday, August 8th. It is called Destination NBA, A G League Odyssey. It's really good. We immersed ourselves into the G League season. We followed Scoot Henderson, Gabe York, Ryan Terrell, Mason Jones, and Denzel Valentine. And the big question was, what is this world like? What's it like to be in the G League? And I am really proud of where we landed with it. And we even have, much later in this podcast, Gabe York is gonna come on. He's one of the five that we followed, and he's gonna tell us what it's like as you're holding on to your dream in your late 20s. We try not to spoil the doc too much with Gabe, but I really liked him. He's probably the guy that jumps out of the doc in the most sympathetic way. So look forward for you to watch it. It is prime video, Tuesday, August 8th, Destination NBA. A G League Odyssey. You love basketball, just watch it, it's good. So there you go. This is gonna be part one of a two -part podcast. Gabe is coming up later. My daughter Zoe Simmons is coming up later because we did a whole bunch of OC stuff on the Prestige TV podcast. I was even on two of the episodes. But I ended up watching season one of the OC. And my daughter was watching with us and loved the show. And she was born a year and a half after it premiered. So me and her broke down season one from the perspective of what is it like when somebody 18 watches the OC, a show that is now two decades old. The anniversary was actually August 6th. And what she liked, what she didn't like, what people aren't doing anymore for her kind of audience. And we just dove into it. So that is much later. First, coming out of the gate, I'm gonna open a six -pack because we have a lot to discuss over the past three weeks, all the stuff I missed. So that's gonna be part one. And then part two, which is gonna go up later on Sunday night, me and Rossello doing this evergreen idea that we've always wanted to do. And this seemed like the perfect time because nothing's happening in basketball. So that's gonna be part two later tonight. Part one coming up. First, our friends from ProJax. What's up? All right, I'm taping this. It is Sunday afternoon Pacific time. And I'm gonna open a six -pack. There's a bunch of stories in sports and culture that happened over the last three weeks. I was just writing stuff down, things that would have been fun for podcast segments. I was just like, man, I wish I could have given my thoughts on that. Just gonna rip through them. So I have six and then maybe a couple bonus ones at the end. The first one, the biggest one, was the US women's soccer team, which lost today in penalty kicks to Sweden, scored zero goals in the last two games, scored one goal in the last three games, and that was off a corner kick. You could feel from the beginning that something was off with this team. It was all the ways. You knew in a checklist of what are the red flags? There were just red flags galore. And the only person who was really calling it out in time over and over again was Carli Lloyd, who was doing the Fox studio show. And she was the one person in the horror movie who knows the house is haunted. And everyone's like, shut up. You're not being patriotic. You just wish you were still on the team. She was right. She was right from the get -go. This team, you could see it before the Vietnam game when it was like, look at the new Nike suits. Look at these new suits. And they're all like styling as they head into the locker room. And they're running commercials. And every player has a commercial. There's players who've never done anything of that commercials. And the vibe was just off. They only beat Vietnam three -nothing in a bracket where goal differential was gonna be super -duper important. And that was a huge red flag. And we did the usual thing that we've been doing since 2019, 2015 of, oh, well, they almost scored a bunch of times. Oh, well, if that had gone in or some bad luck. There was just an arrogance to this team. Like they were carrying themselves like the defending champs, the same way like the Denver Nuggets would go into next NBA season. Like we're the champs. I was like, yeah, you are the champs because the season just happened. The World Cup happened four years ago. Everyone's four years older or wasn't on the team. And you could see they wanted to build the team instead of around the identity of, here are these new up and coming awesome stars that are gonna be in your life. They were really latching on to Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe. Alex Morgan's 34, Megan Rapinoe's 37. I think one of the differences between the discourse with women's sports and men's sports is that in men's sports, we grasp for angles. And if somebody is disappointing in some way, we really go nuts. Like think of how James Harden's been treated over the last 12 years. So he's one of the 35 best players ever and has taken just an incredible amount of shit. Oh my God, the playoffs, look at his game log. Oh, he choked again. Alex Morgan, who scored twice in her first two games in the World Cup in 2011, she scored once in 2015 in seven games. She scored six times in 2019, five against Thailand in a game that was 13 to nothing, one in the other six, and then scored nothing in the four games this time around. If you take away that Thailand game, she has scored two goals in the last 17 World Cup games. This is the striker. This is the one who's supposed to be the most dangerous player in the field, who's supposed to produce goals. And she hasn't produced goals since the mid 2010s on the national level. And yet it's Alex Morgan. She was supposed to be the next one. We got to keep propping her up and pretending she's a superstar. She's not a superstar. She's really honestly never been a superstar. She certainly hasn't been as impactful as somebody like Abby Wambach was. So you have the team built around her. She's got to play. They play her the entire game, game two, the entire game, game three. She plays like 95 minutes in this game today, and they don't score goals. And the announcers just won't talk about it. It's like being on an AYSO team that your kid's on, and the coach is playing somebody at striker, and everyone's like, why don't they play Sally at striker instead of the coach's daughter? It's like, oh, you know, the coach's daughter. She's got to play there. So you have that, and then you have Rapinoe, who's 37 years old, who's just, unfortunately, great career, legendary, true legend, huge big time player. And when you hit your late 30s in soccer, it's a wrap. She looked like Yudana Rapinoe, not big Rapinoe, and comes out for the last 25 minutes of this game and can't do anything, and then misses the penalty kick. That's the thing. If you're beholden to past performance, you can't expect to succeed in the moment. And I did feel like, what were this team's strengths? Speed. They had Sophia Smith, who really was bad the last three games on the left wing. Like, she just, she couldn't even connect passes. Trinity Rodman, who's a beast. Lynn Williams, who's super fast and athletic and had some really nice moments the last two games. And then Alyssa Thompson, who's the prodigy, who's the, you know, potential tiger or LeBron of this team. 18 years old, best high school player I've ever had. They won't even throw her out there. But this was not a team that could connect passes. They weren't, like, especially creative. The coaching was just bizarre, and we'll never see that guy again. But it was like, the one thing they did have was speed, especially the forwards, and they just threw that away. And Alex, you know, couldn't do anything. So now they're out. It's the most disappointing finish of the last 25 years for the women's team. And it reminds me in a lot of ways that 2004 Olympic basketball team that we had, the USA team. And I tweeted this, I think after the second game, because that was a team that was between eras, like this one was, where all the best players on that 2014, the ones in their primes, weren't that good, except for Duncan. And Duncan was completely banged up. He'd played so many NBA games the last couple of years. I think his knee was hurt. But, you know, it was Iverson and Marbury. The talent, it just was a between eras. And you had guys on the bench, like LeBron and Carmelo and Wade, who were four years away. Kobe wasn't on the team. And it just felt generationally, like we caught that team in the wrong time. The style was wrong. And we learned all these lessons and we moved on. 2008, we win. There's a documentary about it. But this team felt like it was between eras. The Alex Morgan, Rapinoe era, which was basically done. And then you have this era coming up with Rodman and Sophia Smith and Alyssa. And, you know, it's just four years from now, we'll probably be fine. But they need to re -imagine this. And I think if you're gonna learn any lesson from this, it doesn't matter what happened four years ago. It's the World Cup. It matters what's happening now. So that's one thing. Second thing. So Jaylen Brown gets this huge contract, $304 million. Some people seem surprised that it was that much money. Chris Ryan even took a shot at it when we did our library watchables. Hurt my feelings a tiny bit. Mainly because I didn't really have a comeback. Rosella did something on his podcast about how this actually makes sense. This amount of money, when you think of how the salary cap has climbed just since 2015, and it's gonna keep climbing. And there's this world you can go into where you think about just how much everything is gonna cost in the NBA four or five years from now, that Jaylen Brown at $70 million isn't actually gonna be that intimidating. The same way we feel about Tobias Harris for $40 million now, or Klay Thompson, $40 million now. Yeah, you don't really wanna pay $40 million for Klay Thompson, but you can survive it. And I think that's gonna be where the Celtics land with Jaylen. Here's why they had to do it. They're the favorites on FanDuel right now. They're plus 470. The thing that made them the most special and has made them the most special for the last five, six years is the Jaylen Brown -Jason Tatum combo. They've been incredibly successful. The team itself has made five conference finals in the last seven years. They came super close to making the finals last year. I have now gone into the what if zone with that Celtics team where what if Tatum doesn't hurt his ankle on the first play? Do we beat Miami? They were close is the point. And when you're that close, you can't fuck around. This is not Bradley Beal resigning with Washington for 50 million a year when everybody knows you can't get past the eight seed with Bradley Beal. This is different. You're trying to win a title. You're trying to keep all your optionality open. The thing that's a little scary about it, nobody seems to totally know if he wants to be in Boston. This is something we've discussed on this pod. It's been floating out there. The fact that he wasn't happy about landing in the Kevin Durant trade rumors a couple years ago. And just in general, where the league is now, where as Woj called it, the transfer portal, where people get their contract first and then they decide what they want to do. And I think for the Celtics, they know they bought themselves a year with Jalen and they are still one of the favorites to win the title. And a lot of it's going to depend on health and Porzingis. You could also, I don't want to make the case, but you might be able to make the case that Brown had a fucked up hand last year. Cause he did. Cause he sliced his hand open. It was bleeding even during the Philly series. And maybe that was why his ball handling went sideways. Listen, you got to do the contract. It just breaks your brain. I remember a million years ago, Sports Illustrated and Inside Sports say every year they would have like a salary issue. And they would talk about these guys are making $1 million a year. And it seemed like so much money. And now where we're heading with the money, plus the NBA is the meteorites deal. The moment any of these guys becomes unhappy, what do you do? Because you're paying Jalen, let's say you're paying him 55 million a year. Plus he is the trade kicker, which the team has to pay. Right? So if he decides after a year, you know what? I'm tired of being the scapegoat. Everybody loves Jason. I'm like the middle brother of this team. I want my own team. I want to go to Houston or Atlanta. You got to trade me. What are the Celtics going to do? On top of who would want out, you don't have a lot of options and you turn into what the situation Portland's in with Deem. And then on top of it, it's so much money. It's impossible to get any sort of a fair trade for the guy. So they had to do it. And optionality the that comes out of it is frightening. I remember in the early 2000s, when the first time the contracts kind of went nuts and you would see that people get signing like six -year, $100 million deals, seven -year, $110 million deals. And the Celtics really, really stupidly traded for Vin Baker. One of the worst trades of the last 30 years for Boston Sports. A trade so bad, you knew it instantaneously. And I wrote a piece that you can probably find somewhere in the ESPN archives about it, where I compared it to the end of Thelma Louise when Harvey Keitel is running toward the cliff trying to stop the car from going off the cliff. That's how I thought about the Vin Baker trade when it happened. Then it happens and you just had this salary albatross. It's a salary cap league. And you're like, wow, we just threw away 20 % of our salary cap on this trade. There's going to be a couple of those that are just franchise killers. And whether that leads to them bringing back the amnesty clause, who knows? I wish, I've made this, I've had this idea before. I wish that they had a rule in there that if you drafted a guy, every year that he stays in the team, you get rewarded in some way from a salary cap luxury tax type thing, right? So Jaylen was 2016 draft, this would be his eighth year. Maybe like after the seventh year, because that's usually like the third contract. The guy stays in the team, maybe each year after that, he doesn't count for 2 % of the luxury tax, up to like 30%, something like that. The point is the Warriors should be rewarded for keeping Draymond and Klay and Curry from a tax standpoint, that they were that smart to draft those guys, keep those guys together. They should be incentivized, the players, to want to stay with them because there's some luxury tax stuff that the team gets. And the team should want to be incentivized to take care of those guys because it's also beneficial to them. I just wish they figured out some version of that rule. Anyway, Jaylen was always signing for $304 million. Talk to me in a year, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Next thing, I missed the running back pity party. This was crazy. The running backs all got together and they were really upset about how much money they made. And I don't know what to tell you. There's too many running backs and not enough running back spots. And I don't know if you're trying to build a responsible salary cap team in a collectively bargained era, why would you spend $30 million over two years on a running back unless the running back was awesome? Nobody even wants to spend more than $11 million on running back. So I knew that this was crazy when Damien Harris, who was on the Patriots, who I thought was really good. He's maybe not an elite running back, but a good running back, right? Somebody that if he had been on the Chiefs, he easily could have started for the Chiefs. And he signed with the Bills for like one year, 2 million. And when that happened, combined with Pacheco on the Chiefs' seventh round pick, they won the Super Bowl with him. It's just, this position's devalued. I work on this player, I've been actually working on it the last couple of weeks where I try to rank the players for blue chippers, red chippers, pink chippers, honorable mention, and have this whole point system. And so quarterbacks, Mahomes, who's the alpha of that position, he's worth 10 points. And you could even see this in the point spread. If Mahomes gets hurt, the Chiefs are 10 points, nine points, whatever, less than what they would be as a favorite. They'd switch to an underdog. And you go on down the line. Jalen Hurts, I had him as an eight. I had Joe Burrow as a nine. And you go on, you keep going down, and it's like, Geno Smith's probably a two. But then you look at some of the other positions and you have to value them the same way the salary cap values them and teams value them. Guards, they aren't worth that much. Running backs, sorry, they're not worth that much. My top running back was three points because ultimately running backs don't really matter that much. In the last like five, six years, I would say Derrick Henry was the only running back that you could definitively say, this guy almost won the Super Bowl. Like he was that good. Other than that, you know, it's plug and play, quarterbacks, it's receivers. It's much harder to find the number one receiver. Every team needs one. It's much more tangible if you don't have the number one receiver. And it's much easier to just kind of scrap together the running back position. And yet people went nuts about this. We ironically had this in the NBA with centers. You know, Vucevic, who's a really good offensive player, he signed for 60 million for three years, 20 million a year. And Jaylen Brown's going to make $52 million a year. Is Jaylen Brown two and a half times better than Vucevic? No, it's just, he plays a way more important position. You can only play one center at a time. You can patch together the center position. You could have like Isaiah Hartenstein for $8 million. You could, you know, get Robert Williams for 16. You don't need to spend what Phoenix did on Eaton where they're paying $8 and $30 million a year at center. And you don't really need to do that. You kind of feel obligated if you don't want to lose the asset. But I think the NBA is going to go this way eventually where unless it is Jokic or Embiid, the center or Bam Adebayo, it's a bonus. You could argue that was already an overpay. They gave him a huge extension. The Lakers just gave Anthony Davis $60 million a year as an extension. I would argue that's a little frightening. I feel like you could patch together the center position. What really matters in basketball is having the creator. And this was the argument five years ago with Luka versus Eaton for the number one pick. And I made this argument. It was like, go look at who wins the NBA title every year. It's always the people who have the creator. There's somebody who's on the perimeter of the ball in their hands. Even Jokic, who wins the title this year, he was a creator. He's not a typical center, right? He's basically their point guard on offense who could post up. So this happened in the NBA. Nobody went nuts. And this is happening in football. And is this where football is. If you want to make the most amount of money playing in the NFL, I don't know why you would be a running back. I would be a cornerback. I would be a wide receiver. I'd be an edge rusher. But if you're a running back, you know your shelf life's probably like five, six years. You know the money is not totally gonna be there. Now they're in this, like you have people like JK Dobbins, like, I might hold out. It's like, really? You didn't barely even play in the field. Barkley said he was gonna hold out. And then, you know, probably looked at it. And the money for Barkley is like 10, 11 million. That's unfortunately the market. So you can't fix this. They collectively bargained it. And until we get to the next CBA, I don't know how you fix it. I thought it was really weird. It felt like people had nothing to talk about. And it was like, ah, let's feel bad for running backs. All right, let's take a break. And then I'm gonna finish the rest of the six pack. All right, picking up on the six pack. We're gonna talk a little more football. I talked about the running back pity party. This is a different kind of party. The Jets optimism, which has just been stunning to me over the course of July. I have Jets fans in my life. These are people that usually have no hope and are very reminiscent of the pre -2004 Red Sox fans, just assuming the worst at all times. Why does God hate us? All that stuff. And now they have this crazy optimism based on the fact that they brought in Aaron Rodgers, who I did not think was very good last year, just throwing that out there. I wouldn't say he was bad, but for Rodgers, he was bad. I mean, we thought Rodgers was, he was the reigning MVP and we thought he was still one of the five or six most impactful players in the league. And I don't wanna read stats to you for the next six minutes, but deep balls, he was bad. Turnovers, he was bad. Leadership, he was bad. And the case for Rodgers coming back would be, well, he's gonna be rejuvenated. The Jets, New York City. This is his team. He got away from Green Bay. He's got Hackett back. I get it, but he's also at an age where we've really only seen Tom Brady succeed at a high, high level at the age that Rodgers is at. I was trying to figure it out. I have my QB ratings and I had, you know, the top tier is Mahomes and Burrow and Allen and Herbert and Hertz. Those have to be the top five. Then it drops off and it's Lamar Jackson and Lawrence. And then Rodgers, probably a hair underneath him with a chance to play himself up with those guys. But from what we saw last year, I'm not ready to put him there. So he's the 10th best quarterback in the league, probably. 10th or ninth best quarterback in the league, probably. Well, they have no offensive line. And I don't understand why people keep glossing over this where it's like, hey, Rodgers and Garrett Wilson, he's one of the best receivers in the league and Breece Hall's going to come back and the defense is really good. And it's like, yeah, the offensive line is terrible. Beckton and Dwayne Brown, sure tackles again. And then you have Robert Salah as the coach, who I cannot say I thought that Jets were crisply coached last year. Whatever he was doing with Zach Wilson was insane. No idea if that guy's even a decent coach. So I'm already worried about your offensive line, the age of your quarterback, and the competency of your coach. And that's before we get into the hard knocks curse, because for some reason they're doing hard knocks, the incredible Super Bowl hype already. And then we have the schedule, which is the AFC East has just got screwed by the schedules this year. The Jets, just for quarterbacks in 17 games, they got to play Josh Allen twice, they got to play Mahomes, Herbert, Hertz, Dak Prescott, and Deshaun Watson. And then they also have to play Miami twice. We'll see what we get out of two this year. And then a really good Pats defense. And then Denver, who knows, they might be rejuvenated. So Danny Dimes, they have to play him. It is a brutal schedule, so you have that. And then on top of everything else, you're the Jets. I was there with the Red Sox before 2004, and this is probably just as bad, where you just think the worst possible things can happen is all the time. You're not allowed to have optimism when you're Jets fans. You can be cautiously optimistic. There was an entire Curb Your Enthusiasm episode once, season 10, episode seven, about being a Jets fan. And it was called, I think, the ugly section. Nick Kroll was the maitre d'. And part of the episode was about, he would put these people in different sections of the restaurant, depending on how attractive they were. But there was this other plot, Larry's buddy who loved the Jets, kills himself. And Larry becomes convinced it was because of the Jets, that the Jets killed his friend. This was only a couple of years ago. So now they get Aaron Rodgers, and everything's good. And they're gonna win the Super Bowl. I don't see it, guys. I don't wanna step on my football stuff too much, but I'd be shocked. And Lombardi points out the defense that everybody's ready to compare to the 85 Bears. Lombardi said they had two turnovers over the last eight games last season. So that means something too. I am dubious, to say the least. If you're gonna tell me a tortured franchise actually turns it around this year, I want a tortured franchise that doesn't have expectations. Because the Lions are another one. Everybody's ready to put them in the Super Bowl or close. And the only case for them is just pretty explosive offense. They couldn't stop anybody last year. And the NFC is terrible. But that's another one where is that a fan base that should be super excited and have a ton of hype? The one that's kind of lurking that fits in this group is the Browns. Because the Browns are actually super talented. They're in a winnable division. Burroughs already hurt. And I think they're four to one to win the AFC North on FanDuel, something like that. Their over -under is, I think it climbed up.

The Hugh Hewitt Show: Highly Concentrated
A highlight from Hugh talks "Filthy Rich Politicians" with Matt Lewis
"Welcome America back using a song from the boss because it's quoted in this brand new book. Matt Lewis, filthy rich politicians. Matt Lewis joins us now. Good morning, Matt. How are you? Hey Hugh, I'm doing amazing. Good to see you. Good to see you. It's been a long time. First time I met Matt was in 2008 at the Texas Republican State Convention. I don't know if you remember back that far, Matt, but you're that old. I do, you took us out to dinner and paid. I remember that really well. All right, well, Matt, this is a fine book. Congratulations. I want to begin though. Thank you very much. And Hugh, I was a young staffer at townhall .com at the time. And that's why you paid. your I appreciate mentorship of young conservatives. I try, I try. And this is a very good book. We agree on about 75%. We disagree on some and we'll get to that. But I want to start with, you know, you wrote the best article or book on grifting by PACs, by super PACs. And you know, one of the things Jack Smith is investigating is illegal fundraising by the Donald Trump stay in office effort. Do you find it unusual that the first person to get prosecuted for that is the former president? Oh, I think it's, you know, I think it's one of those things where the nail that stands up gets hammered down. What's the old proverb about that? You know, I think it's a combination of factors, but Donald Trump has put himself in the line of fire, so to speak, legally. So not - I'm just so disturbed by that because based on your first book, I don't think I've ever received an honest fundraising appeal. I mean, you, especially the ones that came up during the Tea Party movement, didn't you write that original story on the Tea Party movement with just a giant grift? Yeah, no, I wrote, so I wrote an op -ed for the Wall Street Journal about this. And part of it ended up also being in my book as well, my old book, Too Dump to Fail. But yeah, this was a real problem. In fact, there were candidates running, I'm sorry, candidates who weren't even running for office, had no plans to run for office, and someone would start a super PAC like Draft Condi Rice, and somebody would raise millions of dollars, and most of it would go in their own pocket. I it's think scam PACs was the term - That's your term, scam PACs. And I appreciate that, and I tell everyone about it all the time. Never give a dollar to a PAC, never. It's lining the pockets of a crooked person. So Matt, let's get to filthy rich politicians. First of all, I did not know you grew up in Maryland. I did not know you had moved to West Virginia. So are you gonna support Jim Justice or Joe Manchin in the Senate race, Matt Lewis? What do you live with? I'm for Jim Justice mainly because he has this amazing bulldog named Baby Dog. And I literally live in a state when during the COVID pandemic, in order to get West Virginians vaccinated, which by the way, Jim Justice was a leading governor early on pushing vaccinations, in order to get West Virginians vaccinated, we had a lottery where Baby Dog would pick the winner and you could win a gun or a truck. And so based on that alone, Jim Justice has earned my vote. Well, Baby Dog has been on this show. And Baby Dog, I don't know how old Baby Dog is, or if it's like the Georgia Bulldog and it's like Baby Dog 4, but Baby Dog is a heck of a campaign operator. Let's start with a name of a book I've never seen before. Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty. This is a big book in your life. I wrote an advice book once called In But Not Of. Is this book still, you're the one you recommend, Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty. Does it still work? It's been decades, I assume, since you read it. Absolutely. So it's by a guy named Harvey McKay. And he was, believe it or not, in the envelope business, as I recall. I think he had another book called Pushing the Envelope. He had another book called How to Swim with the Sharks and Not Get Eaten. And he literally wrote this book, it's called Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty, the only networking book you'll ever need. And me coming from a very rural background, the son of a prison guard, my dad was a correctional officer in Hagerstown, Maryland for 30 years. I honestly had no idea the concept of networking. I mean, even the concept of like, let's make friends with people and when you have a book that comes out, maybe you email them and they'll have you on the radio show. Like the way that the world works for 99 % of successful people, I literally had no concept of that. No one ever taught me, no one ever taught me like, literally set me down and had a conversation with me about it and I also never observed it in practice. And so at the age of 25 or 26, I read this book and it actually changed my life. And it still works? You think it would still work today? Absolutely. Oh, absolutely. I mean, because this is based on relationships. Remember in Jerry Maguire, his mentor, is it Dickey, whatever, says to you, the key to this business is personal relationships. You can't sell anybody if you don't love everybody. Like that will work forever. It doesn't matter if there's technology or no technology. And by the way, this is not a manipulative thing. That's the thing I loved about this book is that Harvey McKay was not advising, let's manipulate people. It was about building relationships and friendships with people that are reciprocal and mutually beneficial and I'm a fan. Yeah, there are three kinds of friendship according to Aristotle. The first, the friendship of utility. There's nothing wrong with it. It doesn't bring pleasure. The second kind of friendship or wisdom, the third kind of friendship, but it is necessary. So I'm glad to plug that book. Now on money, your general theory is Tug McGraw quote. I like it, I love it, I want more of it. I am with you too, but the best way to do that is to work three jobs for 50 years. You're not gonna get rich quick in America. You have to work three jobs for 50 years and you'll be comfortable. You have got nothing against money. I want to be clear at the beginning of that. You're not an anti -capitalist. That's exactly right and I tried to go out of my way to really stress that. My wife is a Republican political fundraiser for conservative candidates and I'm somebody who's here hawking a book desperately, trying to get people to go to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books -A -Million, wherever fine books are sold and buy filthy rich politicians. So I am a capitalist, I am a entrepreneurial, I love America and I want to become filthy rich. But I also, I will say, Hugh, I don't think money's the root of all evil. I do think the love of money is the root of all evil. So obviously we have to keep things in perspective and not become greedy. And honestly, I think that's the problem with our politicians is that a lot of them, they're disordered. Their priority is not we the people, it's actually cashing in. That to me is the problem. And you make a good argument that a number of people are driven by that. Let's start with our common area of most agreement. I believe with you and you make a good case, stock trading, active stock trading by members of Congress should be illegal. You make that argument at length, Nancy Pelosi is exhibit number one, but there are a lot of offenders. Why do you think that? I agree with you, I can parrot your argument, but you make your argument. Why should stock trading be illegal by members of Congress? Well, first let me say, I don't wanna take credit for this development, but just today, this morning, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Senators Josh Hawley and Kirsten Gillibrand are about to propose a law that would do exactly what I'm calling for, which is banning members of Congress and their families from betting on stock market. And the reason for this, Hugh, is a couple reasons. Number one, it really looks like several prominent members of Congress are engaging in insider trading. In other words, and I can go chapter and verse on this if you want, but we don't have to get too in the weeds, but very clearly, if you look in the book, it looks like members, prominent members of Congress are using inside information that they have from their jobs in Congress to make money to profit on the stock market. And also, I think even more disturbing, during times of crisis or great change, they're using their information to mitigate the losses, to dump stock before something bad happens. They have information you and I as citizens do not have. So I think whether they're really, whether they're engaging in insider trading or whether it just looks like it, either way, it is eroding trust in liberal democracy, in our institutions, and in our lawmakers. Yeah, if we go back to the market crisis of 2008, my dear friend, John Campbell, one of the most ethical men I know, a car dealer, by the way, who came to Congress with a lot of money told me, because Matt has some harsh words for car dealers where I disagree with him, but we'll come back to that, but John is very, very ethical. I've gone to church with him forever. I know him very, very well, and he's a good car dealer and an honest man. He's out of the business now. But he told me about a briefing he got during the financial crisis. He didn't trade stocks. He would never do that. But if you had been in that briefing, you would have dumped every financial stock, and apparently some people did. They should go to jail, but that's not technically insider information. Right, so first of all, it hasn't even been illegal for Congress to engage in inside trading until 2012. That's when Congress passed the Stock Act, and now it is illegal for them to do it. However, I guess my argument is, and I go back to Martha Stewart, you know? I mean, what would you do if someone called you up, let's say someone called me up and said, hey, Matt, you know that stock that you've got your entire retirement in right now? They're gonna announce tomorrow that that super drug doesn't really work. So just a heads up. Tomorrow it's gonna come out that that drug that you've invested your entire life savings in is not effective, and it's hurting people, actually. What would I do? You'd kinda be a fool if you didn't dump the stock, right? You'd be an idiot. And so I think just as the normal course of work of a member of Congress, you're going to be privy to information that average members, average citizens do not have. And so the best way, and it's impossible to police this, how do we know for certain whether Senator Richard Burr knew COVID was going to be so bad because he's the chairman of the Intel Committee, or maybe he just reads a lot of newspapers and follows the story more closely than most Americans. It's impossible to sort of parse things like that. So the simplest way to solve this problem is to ban members of Congress from trading in the stock market. You can still own mutual funds. And Matt Lewis and I are gonna continue talking about this, but banning stock trading by Congress and their family, their spouse, not their kids, their spouse is absolutely essential to the integrity of the United States. Don't go anywhere. I'll be right back with Matt Lewis. The book is Filthy Rich Politicians. Matt knows the Luntz Law, which is to say the title of the book seven times in every interview, but we're gonna say it more than that. Filthy Rich Politicians. Stay tuned.

Steinberg says Anthony's exit from the court was partially obstructed by a chair, adding that video of the incident confirms that Edwards did not swing the chair at any one. I'm guessing cool ball.

What Is Going on in El Salvador?
"Going on in El Salvador El Salvador's out of country we talk about a lot, unfortunately, the only reason we usually talk about El Salvador is the criminals that are coming from El Salvador that are coming into our country, but El Salvador is deciding to take things into their own hands. El Salvador borders the north Pacific Ocean. It is obviously in Central America, borders Honduras and Guatemala. And it's a small country, all things being equal, but it's also a very violent country. In fact, unfortunately, El Salvador, most Americans, if they were to think of El Salvador, they would think of El Salvador as being a violent, a viciously violent gang infested country. But I think this is worthy of noting of how El Salvador has decided to take things into their own hands and be leaders. So the new president of El Salvador, in fact, I don't know if he's new. I just think he's good. I don't know how long he's been in office. We'll find out in a second. President bukele has decided to embark on an ambitious new project. As soon as I saw this news story, I thought of a very specific Hollywood reference, of course I thought of Harvey dent in The Dark Knight where you just arrest like 2000 gangbangers at once. He's been president since 2019. So apparently he's been working on this for some time. Let's go to cut 60 Jesse watters who reports on El Salvador's new president moving gang members to do to a new mass mega prison. And is the country safer? Not only is it safer, but crime in El Salvador has dropped so dramatically there has not been a murder in the whole country in a week. What a concept

I don't normally get very involved in these kinds of races, but I think I felt as well as Ron DeSantis did that when you got an operation that is consistently losing, reducing bad results. Think of a corporate CEO's got bad earnings for four years in a row. And ronna mcdaniel produced bad results in 2018, 2020, 2022. Now I'm not saying this is single handedly her fault, but the Republican National Committee is in fact the organization that is in charge. Of managing the strategy for the GOP for the Republican Party in elections. It's got resources to do it. It's got the strategic ability to do it. It is involved in races across the country. 'Killing Kennedy' Author Jack Roth Discusses Lee Harvey Oswald
"Let me ask you, you know, excuse the kind of cruel pun, but gun to your head, what happened in Dallas, Texas. I try to avoid the gun to my head. And in the book, I tried 'cause, yeah, I'm a journalist. Documentarian, and I'm like, oh, what do I say at the end of this? And I learned a lot. But what I tell people is, when they ask me, who killed Kennedy? The first thing I say is the Cold War, and it's cold warriors. Killed candidate. And what I mean by that is it was the times in which Kennedy governed that got him killed. That's my first answer. And my second answer, I know who didn't kill Kennedy. I'm feel very confident about who didn't kill Kennedy. And that's Lee Harvey Oswald. So let me ask you, do you think do you think Lee Harvey Oswald was in the Texas school book depository at the time? Or do you think he was somewhere else? I think he was there. He was told, you know, that's where his job was and he was doing certain things. And it isn't intelligence capacity. And he may or may not have been in front of the building. There's controversy about a photo there that shows really looks like Oswald there. But again, not definitive, whatever. It is very interesting. But I think he was in there because that was part of the setup. And I also think that he went to the Texas theater because his CIA handler told him to meet him there. And that's why he goes there. And within minutes, there's, again, a hundred Dallas police officers there arresting him. There's so much to that that just doesn't make any sense. And so yeah, I think Oswald was oswalt actually, I'll go ahead and say this. And if you read the book, you'll see why, because of what a lot of people say. He actually thought that he could prevent the assassination. And I think he was told by his handler and by, you know, whoever his bosses were, that he was there to infiltrate Cuban exiles, the Cuban exile community,

She did but not enough to wear one wanted an as an adult wanted. Somebody else to serving that. But i was one of those put conditions on it so my whole thing was okay I pay everything you live comfortable. You're good. I was meeting very selfish. And i'm gonna lay my ass in his bed and i'm not gonna wash dishes and i'm not gonna do nothing and you're gonna come in here and you're to serve me food which i was totally wrong back in those days for doing that now today. I'm the pull opposite i. I'm the guy. I cleaned all that stuff now. My elderly age of fifty six. Cindy said that she has no problem serving guys in any extreme right. The guy who's paying for everything. You still serving august. I'm with you see in my days. You know i had the disease to please. So it didn't matter if you took me to mcdonald's or whatever if i had a man i'm going to serve you i there's another extreme but now that i know my worthen i know who i am because in my old days fifty three almost fifty three cloud that blackboard crime. We stretch fifty three album fifty three and a couple of months Yeah you know what it is. Is these these green drinks and exercising and love like my husband loves me. i don't have. I saw love and that stress. Not worrying you know just exceed all over your face. Jesus i but but you with your dancing. We'll get to that. But literally i if my husband now and he takes care of lot. Thank god i mean. It's just it's just so he's he's so sexy going to work paying the bills. I want to serve him. I want to i. Sometimes i say let me serve you. What is it you want. what is it you want to eat. And he's like no. I'm good. I got him like no. What is he thinking you might want. And and he's like no. No no i got. His is a bit of a food snob. He doesn't want me to because he's a vegan and everything i was like. I just have a taste for soup. Let me make your soup. Wow you know so. And for me. Now i get it. I don't care what anybody say. Anything brother. He pays the bills though he doesn't you know the bible says it like this and i normally get in trouble for this but that woman should regardless of the status of a man that is their husband they should. They should be there for them. They should serve them with gladness. But i will put a caveat on that right right now. you know he's a crackhead or something like that or he's out there messing up. The bible gives us a couple of instances where we just need to be like all right you you you add he. You know whatever. But it's still even without god's saying i get it now i get it. I love to serve my husband. You know and it's not always one hundred is not always perfect but like he is me and he loves on me in such a way. You know that yeah. We'll see you need. You need to start serving something.

The internet's he and people working for these sales now sitting at home and they get more money. Getting unemployment is so when when september one of unappointed september. They come on back. But she's saying she's saying to all of us collectively as a group his dad. If i for for harvey walked in with an excuse me but dubov saint harvey harvey walked in there knowing that this job is what it is and i know the description of job if i walked in with that h influ. She's a high. She's no doubt i'm ready for success. All i'm saying. And that's all the show on his cell noticing. So do you tell them before the interview to dress up. Yes i definitely do so even if you told the person not address and they still came in with a two in doing what are you gonna do. I put them to work. So you still hiring them. I won't hire them because they don't listen it. The reason i would hire them is because of the job that they did like. I said we we are told it. I'm gonna be honest. Pajau is going online now. We are told to give them the person that comes in. What we do is ship interviews so interviews. Actually you come into work shifts. Okay at that point that you come into work that shift if you come in in your soup anti. You already told that you're going to be working for her before higher you to do it twice and i will pay you that exact day in for the hours that you did work. I do pick for that came in a suit you already knew beforehand so they can change real quick start put on regular clothes and get to get the work that they that can they do see. We'll see to me. That's a sign that you don't listen because if i specifically told you to wear them jay some boots some work boots and whatever shirt and you come in deliberately would assume you won't get the job because that may you cannot follow breakfast with you from here on out so so wait a minute. They can't come to work. They can't come to your location dressed up. If i told you me i'm still you right. So you're not gonna you don't follow directions. Well right so you're not hiring a person but the is is is hiring and i even if the person said to me if i said you know when you work clothes on don't come with a suit. They came with a suit. I'll still hide him. Go ahead. I'm not hurting them. Off the fact that they came in a super talk of course emmy with appreciate that yes you you know you did it come through and but then i have to look at your work efforts in what you're deal. Yes that's that's the listen you've been on the phone too long. You gotta you gotta go back to climb trucks but you more than that job you have over there and you have been to someone and god bless you. You are not only remember. Who feel sorry for victim because bobby would you like to all right now. Thank you know. see later. So we barbie just Sean harvey morning show sydney. Bobby only exhausted sean. Who's black campaign on about all. This is definitely. This is definitely a great topic of discussion on his definitely a Go with the times discussing You gotta understand that that this generation today isn't like corporate isn't corporate anymore like if you go for an interview for google you could wear jeans with holes in them and a pair of sneakers and and radhi served if you go for an interview google. Because they're lay back like that Got to always keep in mind. I don't know degeneration. I came from his dad. You know if you dress good you feel good about yourself. And it's not so much about Impressing the interviewer is is is. Is you feeling good about yourself. And you feeling worthy of this position So generation is definitely generation thing but Those that grew up in my generation. No that it's best to put your best foot for with Audit actually jobs that that that that today that corporate. That's my question is like win. This conversation started. I was just saying well in in in person interviews for sure that didn't happen at this time last shit. That's what i was saying. July are able to twenty seven with to twenty seven twenty seven. Two thousand twenty. I don't think there were any person interview because people were dying by the thousands every day. But we're doing virtue virtue interview right to lock still so that was my point. My point was wide. Even doing this is ridiculous. Blue suit because even if when this thing opens up again in his possibly open now this still maybe a small percentage of corporate folks that have impacted interviews and you make a great point ken. There's certain google you might walk in their genes. Mcdonald's you might have to go in there with a suit ours. Just saying few folks in everybody had different opinions on the fire line. The fine line is is corporate in professional. So you don't have to be Interview for a corporate position to be professional. Did that thing. I think that's the fine line. Corporate world corporate in a world professional You should be professional because you going to. Mcdonald's is a professional business. So you're going to a so you should be dressed professionally f- corporate or something like totally different corporate is Go to big money callers. And they d- owners and all that stuff there and They just on that give telling me suits. And and all the you know but corporate and professional. I think we should define what we actually mean. Take dress up affectionately you sean. I you professionally. Go protesting your comment right. But that's in your comment here. You go for no addition. You're going to dress professionally for the audition. Yes you're not gonna just corporately for the audition. So so you defy what corporate and what's professional but It.
