Managing Finances When the Flow of Income is Inconsistent With Jeff Fishman

"Hello. Everyone and welcome to the latest episode of wealth management dot coms celebrity estates wills of the rich and famous for anyone new to the and each instalment myself in a guest on a different celebrities. State attempt to extract some key lessons planners can apply to their more traditional clients. The idea being that celebrity estate planning stories although often ridiculous in their details generally have at their course basic issues that can just as easily apply to non famous or fabulously wealthy clients. Our guest this week is jeff fishman. Jeff is the founder and managing number of jsf financial in los angeles. Thanks for joining us jeff. It's great to be here so normally. This is the part where i introduced the celebrity subject of this week's episode and then run my mouth for about five minutes telling story about their state. We're gonna throw a curveball this week though no celeb- instead we're gonna flip our mission statement a bit and talk with jeff specifically about advising high profile clients in those in the entertainment industry which is a topic a number of our listeners of interest in hearing tackle so jeff. Before we get into the real nitty gritty. Do you mind telling our audience a bit about yourself. And your sure david ed. So i'm born and bred in los angeles and went to college and law school in new york so i basically spent my life here on both coasts and after having this law a couple of years i've gone through. Ucla financial planning program and decided to start my own fee based financial planning practice which i began twenty five years ago and being in the middle of los angeles having grown up here inevitably. I have a lot of friends from childhood in other people that i've met who works throughout the entertainment industry and our whole practice has been built upon referrals. And as you can imagine. Those young producers young writer suddenly become showrunner has become directors They introduce you to others and it's basically just been word of mouth progression throughout the industry which is taken us to where we are today interesting so i know a lot of for a lot of our listeners and a lot of advisors on working with sort of you know entertainment clients in high profile clients. Like this is sort of an aspirational thing. So a very popular question we get is. How do i break into this industry. How do i start having these clients. It seems like you started collecting your client during childhood. It's funny it is it all goes down to relationships like anything else on the one hand On the other hand. I mean it's interesting. It's type of an industry that you could get started if you wanna start at the bottom. And we've all heard the stories of people working at the agencies in the mailrooms coming from harvard yale and literally going ahead and working melrose at creative artists agency or one of the others. And it's pretty much the same if you wanna go and start working in the industry. You've got to start with those kind of people because the way the industry works is those people to bottom inevitably one of them move up to somebody's desk ultimately become the agent or somebody young writer's room to become a writer himself a lead writer or producer. And it's really just starting early with certain people in their career like any other industry and hopefully growing with them and that's really interesting point. I'm glad you brought up here. Is that. I think for a lot of people. Entertainment equals celebrity. So if someone's in the entertainment industry automatically high profile person and it's just this leap but in reality there was an entire ecosystem that makes up the entertainment industry. And so you can enjoy working with everyone. Among the legal system much like working with clients has said and other industries is an important part of eventually working your way up to those higher up people completely completely and again once you start forging relationships in people forget entertainment industry is. I mean you've got invented the camera and you've got all the people who are behind the camera and there's a lot more people who work behind the camera than in front of the camera and that whole industry behind the camera. They tend to be much with all call more More consistent type of income situations they tend to be far more stable and so make sure business standpoint while the people in front of the camera or a lot. More appealing maybe sexy. The other side is actually a lot more attractively. Think about it. From an overall business perspective you mentioned consistency of income. Can you expound on that at concept a little bit in sort of what that means with with this sort of segment clientele sure so if you are in executive studio you're going to typically be under contract for multiple years if you are a writer on a show as long as the show's coming back and it's doing well. You're typically going to come back season after season Alternatively if your talent on a show and even if the show or if you wanna move movie to movie if you're on a show only subject to renewal but more than that if all of a sudden the show starts doing well but typically will happen. We'll be the talent is looking to earn more money per episode

Obviously, it wasn't a great start to it. James Harden had previously requested a trade to the Net sources now telling ESPN Harden is open to a trade to the Sixers. Among others. "Welcome to kiss myths and Mystery Syam, your host Kit crump today, the Bohemian Grove and a little bit about secret societies. Perhaps, you belong to a club some time in your life maybe the girl Scouts or cub scouts I was a cub scout many clubs have rules and regulations that go no further than the halls were the members gather like the elks however organizations like the PTA Parent Teacher Association can affect schools, school districts therefore students the reach and impact of. These organizations are limited and generally they're intent is not secret records of meetings of the scouts, elks in the PTA and many other clubs are available to the public. But there are many secret societies out there Yale's skull and bones founded in eighteen thirty two and has had both bushes Teddy Roosevelt and his cousin Franklin as members but a complete list of members is difficult to acquire and the intent of the club impossible to know Dan there is the barbarian aluminum. An lighten era secret society founded may first seventeen seventy, six. The BILDERBERG group is so secret that is considered by many to be a shadow world most secret societies, clubs and organizations so far flung with headquarters in different cities around the world. But the Bohemian Grove is located on two thousand, seven hundred privately owned acres located in Monte Rio California and established eighteen seventy two security at the grove is year round ex-military hired to keep out the curious high end equipment including thermal night vision cameras, and motion detectors are used. As. Part of the sophisticated detection and alarm system, they have ceremonies with strange names like the yearly cremation of care ceremony. It was revealed by a California judge during a discrimination suit brought against that grow by the California Department of Fair Employment and housing over the club's refusal to hire women when the judge that issued decision in favor of the club's practice of not hiring women stated the club members urinated in the open and that hiring women would alter the members behavior odd ceremonies and members strange conduct aside members like those. Of Yale are rich and powerful pictures of President Reagan and Nixon indicate they were members. Also, the Grove is particularly famous for a Manhattan Project Planning Meeting this took place there in September of Nineteen, forty two, which subsequently led to the atomic bomb those attending this meeting include Ernest, Lawrence j Robert, Altman Heimer, the s one executive committee heads such as presidents of Harvard Yale and Princeton along with representatives of standard, oil general, electric as well as various military officials. All members at the time oppenheimer was not an s one member. Although Lawrence, an open heimer hosted the meetings grow members take particular pride in this of and often relate the story to new attendees. However, other behavior at this famous campground has led to numerous claims and even some parody in popular culture. Education Department Probes Harvard, Yale Over Foreign Funding

"The US Department of Education announced late yesterday that it is investigating two elite. Us Universities Yale and Harvard. The government says the schools failed to report hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign gifts and contracts. Npr Education correspondent. Returner is following this and joins us in Studio Corey. Rachel all right tells more what exactly is the education department saying. Harvard and Yale did wrong. Well it's saying. They violated a part of the higher education. Act specifically section one seventeen and it says colleges and universities have to report to the US government any contracts or gifts from foreign sources. If they're worth more than a quarter of a million dollars in the case of Yale the department says the school failed to report at least three hundred and seventy five million dollars in foreign gifts and contracts and chose not to report any gifts apparently over the last four years the department says it is also concerned. Harvard hasn't fully disclosed all foreign gifts or contracts and is this really just limited to Harvard and Yale not even close We should say both schools Harvard and Yale confirmed NPR. They have received These notices investigation. They are preparing to respond but the government has already been looking into other schools including Georgetown. Texas AM CORNELL RUTGERS MIT Maryland. This is a widespread problem. The department says since July of last year it's enforcement efforts have triggered the reporting of about six and a half billion dollars in previously undisclosed foreign money. Okay so corey explain what? The trump administration is really worried about here. Yeah a few things. Espionage certainly wants to protect US intellectual property and Research. It also wants to make sure. Foreign governments aren't exercising. You know undue influence It's chief concern here seems to be China remember. It was just a week or so ago. That the chair of Harvard's chemistry department was arrested for allegedly lying to Defense Department investigators about lucrative research contracts. He may have had with the Chinese government. And I should also say Rachel. There was a Senate investigation last year that found nearly two thirds of US schools that received more than that quarter of a million dollar threshold from what it calls a propaganda arm of the Chinese government actually failed then properly report it. So as a result basically the Senate brought the hammer down on the department for non enforcing the law and so now. Ed is bringing the hammer down on schools. So where's the line though? Corey explained the line between gifts that then opened the door to espionage and gifts. That are just gift something less than furious. I think the challenge here is that line is not even remotely clear There's just a lot of gray area. One example is is a central focus of that Senate investigation from last year. They looked into what are called these Confucius institutes that are on dozens of us. College campuses and They're funded essentially by the Chinese government and they're meant to promote Chinese language and culture and they're essentially a a really powerful expression of of China's soft power here But it also clearly made Senate. Investigators really nervous right so so. What are the schools saying? I mean? Are they defending this? Well you know what no one denies that this is a problem that they need to disclose this stuff They told me though. You know one reason. There's such a need for this. Money is because state funding for higher. Ed really hasn't fully rebounded since the great recession I also heard from a few folks saying like look when it comes to cutting edge research scientific development. Collaboration is important and that collaboration is often international. I also want to say one more thing which is a few folks told me that. Look you know what the department is also to blame here because this law has been on the books since the one thousand nine hundred eighty s and the department has never bothered to enforce it or to clarify to create any sort of rules to make clear to schools. This is what you need to do and this is how you need to do it. So there's plenty of blame to go round. Npr's Corey Turner. Thank you corey. Thank you

Texas Tech's School Of Medicine To Stop Considering Race In Admissions

"Support for NPR comes from investor dot gov. Presenting this message when it comes to investing. We all have questions and investor dot gov has answers, it's your free resource for tools. Tips and information about investing before you invest investor dot gov. Okay. The Trump administration has ordered the medical school at Texas Tech university to stop using race as a factor in admissions. And now one question is whether this case has broader implications for -firmative action in this country. This is the first time the administration has made this kind of a demand of a school. It comes after a fourteen year. Federal federal investigation of Texas Tech's use of affirmative action, Michelle hack, Ben covers national education policy for the Wall Street Journal, and she had access to some of the documents detailing an agreement between the university's medical school and the department of education, thanks for coming in days for having me. So what exactly did the administration conclude here that has the making this demand? So there are two requirements if you wanna use affirmative action. The first one is that your use of race when you're picking, you know, students in admissions is that it's very narrowly used it's one factor in many and the other is that you do regular checks in colleges. Most colleges have interpreted this to mean annual checks that race is really a factor. That's uniquely helpful in sort of achieving the type of diversity that you wanna campus that you can't use race neutral factors like, you know, a person's income whether someone's bilingual things like that. And they found the Texas Tech the the medical school had not been doing these annual checks. And so it was unclear whether their use of race was really necessary the way that they're seeing it was. So what happens now is the school basically saying, yes, we weren't doing these checks where wrong, and we're going to cooperate and stop using raise. That's right. So what they signed with the education apartment is called a resolution agreement where they say we agree to stop using race to come into compliance with your view of anti-discrimination law. Now, I think what's remarkable about that. Is that the education department sort of you know, their enforcement was that they wanted the school to immediately stop using race rather than sort of conduct the analysis that they hadn't done remind me of the broader context here. I mean hasn't the supreme court ruled several times schools can use a -firmative action if they want diversity. So why do these legal challenges keep having so proponents of affirmative action woods? Say that they'd say this court has said several times that race permissible that it's imported in fact, if you wanna be able to achieve diversity, but in the twenty sixteen case, so this was first Fisher versus the university of Texas. The decisions would have left an opening for legal challenges. They said you have to do these sort of regular checks to make sure it's still necessary. And the we've seen the Trump administration really lean into that and say, we want this to be as nearly tailored as possible last July. They actually you've rolled back this guidance. That was almost like a roadmap that the Obama administration had created to say, here's how you can use affirmative action legally. So the Trump administration took that away sort of signaling that they were going to go ahead and try to enforce. Affirmative act. You know, not using affirmative action as strongly as they possibly could blow on the the administration is is investigating policies at at other places like Harvard Yale could this be the administration just getting started here. So I think the specifics of this case are unique to the Texas Tech health sciences center. That's the you know, the larger school with medical schools housed. But the administration does have, you know, a civil rights investigations open at Harvard at Yale over their use of -firmative action. Those cases specifically looking at Asian American students. And so it's a question whether we'll see them continuing to enforce this really strict narrow view of affirmative action at those schools or possibly other schools where they could open investigations, I think it puts those schools on notice. "Finger information with bud Adams when the powder blue suit wearing owner of was it then the Houston Oilers is it was a tight. It was the titans. You know, he might have done this in buffalo. He gave double middle fingers. No side. Flaps nothing just to middle fingers. Naked it ended up in a giant fine for him. We'll get to God says we can survey ships in a second. But I am sad to report. That the taunting in the Harvard Yale game this weekend. We're running back for Harvard. Got fifteen yards for taunting. It looked like he was giving a middle finger to the defensive back not very heavy league. But photographic evidence suggests otherwise now it is not unfortunately a middle finger, but there was a middle finger yesterday that Malcolm Jenkins gave Sean Payton. Did you see that Stu got? I did see that. Yeah. Sean Payton can get under someone's skin man cameras. Caught Jenkins giving the middle finger because the defending champions were down thirty one points and the saints went for it on fourth and six and of course on that play Alvin Kamara beat Malcolm Jenkins. A few. If you have any other middle finger information, please that we did we need to develop a hotline time now for stugatz as weekend observations. It is time for us to guys to share his game notes. No, one in the media will tell you what happened..
