What We Can Learn From Microscopic Life In Antarctica

"Thing that i feel like a lot of people don't know about antarctica is that it's really brimming with life and a lot of different locations. It's just that most of it is invisible to us. You would need to have a microscope in order to see them. This is ariel waldman. She's a wildlife filmmaker at the microbial scale. And i'm an adviser to nasa and i'm also in antarctic explorer aerial. I became interested in ant arctic microbes. Back in two thousand thirteen. She was working with nasa and she met astrobiologists who study and articles extreme conditions and the life forms. That actually thrived there. I had learned that a lot of biologists goto antarctica but they very rarely ever take any photos or videos of the creatures that they studied there. And so i kind of saw an opportunity to really help both scientists and help people around the world actually get to see all this amazing stuff so that realization. That is what inspired you to basically become the first filmmaker to document these hidden ecosystems. But how did you go from that inspiration to making it happen. Couldn't could not have been easy going to antarctica just required a lot of preparation. I prepared for months and this was after. It took me five years of applying to go to aunt hartika and working towards becoming a wildlife filmmaker at the microbial scale. And so i was self taught microscopy and then i ended up joining the san francisco microscopically society which i am now the president of

"EMT be take me a while to get that. Right. What we got on there? Katie that people want to check out. So my favorite thing. You know, these kids today, they don't know how did you rotary phones? They don't know how to do much of anything that people used to do back in the day. Now, they don't know how to use a cassette tape in a car. So a mother I believe it was the mother filmed her daughter at trying to put a cassette in the car. And she just has no idea what to do with it. She doesn't even realize what a cassette is. The whole cassettes hard to find cassette players these days. I'll guarantee you. They wouldn't even know what to do with the CD player with an old pair of headphones. They'd be like what is this? What do you put in this? You're one to talk. Oh, I know where this has got a youngster who remember we cut LP a forty five record. It only she was wondering why there's well. I got two songs on here. She didn't know the record played on both sides. Really reading here. The old forty five RPM records that was actually your record. And Jeff's, right. You had given it to me one day to convert. So I give it to a DJ down at ninety three three, and he sent me back to files, and I was so confused and I came in next day. It was like jet. How weird is this Jamie semi back to files, and he was like. Yeah. And I was like, but why is it's a record. There's only one thing on it. And he just busted out laughing, and he will never let that go. There were sides to it the new everyday the pogo stick champion on one side and the oh, wow. You remember what it was? What was it called the Floridians, a yankee's opinion? I think he. You got me. Twenty two job offers at major stations around the country is stayed with us. We love you all know. I went to DC for a year he came back back. But you also you guys have to check out why ballet might be for men and the funniest video on the blog right now is that Gladys Knight video without the pips. Gladys knight. Without the pip hysterical. Gladys Knight doing the national anthem, of course for the Super Bowl. But have you ever seen the pips without Gladys Knight? She is pitiless hip list. But these guys are Gladys list. Hey, we were talking about blood role on real quick here about the state of the union address. What do you think but role? Yeah. I think they should get. But the president's speech is due congresswoman occasional tax. That would be that would be funny that would be a comedy show to have a OC doing the rebuttal to the president. I'd love to hear that one. And Tom in Clearwater quickly. You say you spent time in Antarctica. Good morning. All first of all, we're gonna miss Katie wish you the best of luck up in Oregon, you better believe and she's going to be in a pretty cold area to. Yes, she is sure she'll do fine. But yeah, I spent several months in Antarctica. And when they say that it's colder. In places in the US and Hartika you just have to take into consideration. This is the summer months in Antarctica. So. Time to go to the beach known getting Arctic ten relatively speaking each time in Antarctica. He's right. It is summertime now an article, I think what they're trying to say is it was colder there in Minnesota or whatever town in Chicago. And it was then it.

"You off. And this is time for a rip-off alert. This is Clark Howard off alerts. The apartment market around the United States is. So weirdly distorted right now. For people renting at the high end of the market in most of the United States most cities in the United States rents right now, we're going down down down. And that's because since twenty twelve. Apartments had been way over Bill at the high end of the market. I know every apartment complex you ever look at says it's luxury housing, but I'm talking about at the high end of the market. The construction has all been expensive apartments. Nobody's building mid price apartments at all. And if you know classic real estate over time, the overbuilding of too many high end apartments will create because of the excess supply will create lower rents overall. But right now, what's happened is the high end deals everywhere, but modestly priced apartments and particularly lower priced departments or an extreme shortage. And in many cities, those rents are rising. So people are desperately looking for affordable housing, and that's caused a boomlet in the scams where people pretend they're a landlord pretending to rent a place. And you end up getting ripped off in the most common scam. A crook will duplicate listing for a real place. And they will show you what looks like a fantastic dwelling, and they will show it available for rent just a little bit below the market. That's how they keep credibility because if they were listed way below market, you'd smell a rat. But let's say the prevailing run. I'm just gonna use crazy numbers. Okay. This may not be any relation to the rent price. You're looking at. But let's say. The rent's generally on the apartments that. You're looking at earned the range of twelve hundred. They might list it at a thousand. Maybe fifteen twenty percent, but low prevailing rats, and so it'll be these nice pictures of a place and all that. And remember, it's a it's what's known as a stolen or hijacked listing most often called hijack listing where they post pictures, they may have taken off of condom listing site may have been off Zillow whatever, and they just take those pictures of a place typically, a condo for sale more often than a rental unit for rent, and they'll duplicate the pictures do listening is if it's a rental have it available. Unfortunately, most often on Craigslist. And for whatever reason they can't show you the place, but they're happy to rent it to you as long as you fill out the rental application all that. And they go through the whole protocol just like you would with any other place and the whole gimmick is to try to get a security deposit out of you and first month's rent. So what you need to know, particularly if you're moving into an area from out of town, or even if you're local you don't want to rent a place sight unseen pictures on the internet, not enough you want to actually see the physical place. Now, the crux are gonna vanish. When they know you want to see the actual rental property. And that's the greatest protection you can have Magda is with us on the Clark Howard show. How are you? I'm perfect. Great. How can I serve you? Well, my husband is having his big birthday next year. And I was wondering if there is any way I could. The research for him vacation in Antarctica. I could afford on a librarian budget. He's a big nature lover. So I just wanted to surprise you with something. Nice. Well, aren't you? Just the sweetest. You're not gonna go now. Okay. So I have not Antarctica is the only continent I haven't gone to. And normally you think it's because I haven't gone because I'm cheap. And I won't spend the money that's half the answer. The other half is if you watch any videos on YouTube about what the waves are like is you go south most people go south from Argentina, the waves are giant monster waves most of the time, and then it calms as you get closer, Dan Hartika. And so do you think your husband could handle going through? He wants to. Galapagos? And I understand the waves are rather unpleasant there as well. Okay. So good for him. I'm not doing that. So let's see not me out for like two days, and I woke up, and I hadn't known I've been through them. So the reality is going to Antarctica is going to be an expensive venture. And there are no true bargain trips that I have ever heard of to an article something that has to be a very very special event that's worth laying out some serious cash. That's not the answer. You were looking for for me was it. Well, I will just wondering maybe if there is a season of the year, or if they are any last minute specialists. People go to an article gets through from there, you go to an article during the north northern hemisphere winter because it will be summer. So you really wanna go in? December January February and Antarctica is. Generally, you go on a boat, and they're. There used to be like discovery fights people would go on where you just fly down and fly over the Antarctica. And then you fly back, and that's something that I'm not aware as done anymore because it just doesn't give you the experience you have. If you go by boat, many of the boats that go our first scientific research, but there are journeys for people who just want to experience the adventure. And I'm trying to think where. You know what? Okay. Krista. My producer just came up with something on the web that did not occur to me. You're going to like this. She just came up with there are when they have uncertainty soul births on the cruise to Antarctica. They offer deals on them. Just like they do for any other cruise for last minute, unsold cabins. Wow. I never thought of that. That's why she's my boss. She's got that brain power. That's that is the right thing to do is to look for a last minute cruise. What month are you thinking of him going? It's flexible he can go can go any any any time next year. Okay. Whatever. So what I do is. I would talk to someone who is a cruise only agent and get he or she to keep monitoring it. And when there's a real special where one opens up, particularly for a last minute that that's how you book it. And that's how he goes. And you have to add in the cost because most of them as I mentioned go from Argentina. So you have to add in the cost of a flight from wherever in the US to Argentina not to Buenos Aires to to probably use free. Ben flyer miles. That's what we did for the in Galapagos. Very smart. Very smart that combination Magda would be a great deal us a free ticket and then a last minute cruise, and he will have experienced the only continent I have not been to. And maybe I need to stop being such a wimp. Roberts with us on the Clark Howard show. Hello, robert. Hey, it's still nice to talk to you today. It's great to have you here. You have a question for me about how I get a razor last so long, right? You have mentioned they'd drying the blade. Well, I can't figure out how to do that. I don't do it the right way. Robert, which you're supposed to do is. You're supposed to use like alcohol to dry it or some people that are obsessed us a blow dryer there are now devices you can buy drugstores that when you're done shaving, you put the blade into it. And then it's basically an internal hairdryer kind of thing that drives the blade I simply. Dry it on my towel shake it off dry it on my towel put it in the drawer and two blades ago. My boy lasted fifteen months. My most recent blade. I am sad to report only lasted three months. I don't know what I did wrong because that's the shortest any blade is lasted me and years and years and years, but only got three months out of it. Let's do the impression when I liked that alcohol idea. I think I'll do that way. So how often do you replace a blade, Robert? Oh well. Shape about twice a week in. I can probably go a month. Well, now, if you start drying it you'll make it twice a week shaver, you might make it two years. Well, we will see I'm gonna take up that challenge. All right. Let's see the longest I was impressed with my fifteen months, but there are people who've gone way past fifteen getting razor to last because the key is that blades don't deteriorate from the act of shaving. They deteriorate only from moisture the manufacturers Schick and Gillette and the other smaller players make fantastic razors. Now, and there's no reason for him to degrade. And never particularly ladies don't leave your razor in the shower. Or are you going to shorten the life of it to about nothing? You're listening to the Clark Howard show. I'm.
