"It's a really easy form at auto populates. Do that now. And I'll also note that if we had strong public schools and we're busy funding public education and building that infrastructure instead of outsourcing it to private schools, we wouldn't be in this mess right now. Yeah, well, we would need to have you on for an entire additional hour. Look, the Republican Party agenda is to dismantle public education and replace it with the kind of education that you can opt into that allows you to live the life of an Amy Coney Barrett and go all the way to the Supreme Court without ever being forced to associate with other people who would challenge insane dogmatic beliefs that were indoctrinated into you as a child. And the entire history of our nation, the point of a liberal arts education, the point of having public education in the first place is to do the opposite of that, is to say, we want you to develop critical thinking skills. We want you to be exposed to a wide variety of viewpoints. We want you to develop fully and freely as a citizen. These are John Dewey in the 1920s and 30s, right? Like this is a bedrock position that it is no coincidence that Donald Trump picked as his secretary of education, somebody who was opposed to public education. It is no coincidence that Republicans want to do nothing about the skyrocketing costs of college. They want to do nothing for loan forgiveness. They want to do nothing that enables people to break out of the bubbles, the explicitly religious indoctrinating bubbles that folks are in because they know you can homeschool a kid with as much as you want, but you send that kid off to college at age 18, the first person they meet is going to be like, wait, you think the earth is 6000 years old, and you've lost them. They're gone. But if they go their whole life in cargo cult universities run by Jerry Falwell, that magically been accredited or the equivalent and go to a cargo cult law school, then clerk for a judge who shares that. I feel like I've taken over Andrew soapbox. No, it's soapbox is big enough. Just even taking religion out of it for a second, so I understand. What's even the criteria at all for these things to be considered schools? I mean, is it just that these religious schools are good at doing like the bare minimum requirement to be called a school and then also add in the religious bullshit? Like, why not the Harry Potter school of witchcraft and wizardry? Can I get some sort of funding for that too? Now it's unclear. So originally, the school had to, it had to be approved. And that essentially meant that it had to be non sectarian. It had to meet two specific things, okay? Either not be associated with a particular belief. But if it was, it could not promote that belief or faith in its curriculum, or at least for the students who were trying to access sort of the public education. So it could be religious school and still get this public money so long it was able to provide a secular education. And so that was what it used to be. And now it's not clear. And they had to be accredited by and let me see. Yes, and let me throw one other really important and fascinating note here is we already talked about and I mentioned how the bigoted nature of this school's educational standards, all of that stuff. The schools at issue did not make it clear that they would accept the funds if the state actually gave them to the parents in this case. So the court should not have been deciding this case. But as we've discussed on this opinion and as I detail in the book, they watch to decide these days. To amplify there, that is a standing issue, right? There is not a live case or controversy. Therefore, if this were any other kind of case, you would have dismissed it out on standing grounds as being an advisory opinion. Yes. Thank you. But now that they have 6 justices who can do that. They don't care. They don't care. Standing doesn't matter. And why wouldn't the religious schools have accepted the funding? Is it because of these requirements? Yes, that's the question. Because right now, public money means public regulation. And that should mean that they can't impose those discriminatory standards on students and staff and things like that if they're taking the public money. But the court knew about it all that and still decided the case in their favor. Now, there's possibly an open question about whether or not that will actually the funds will actually flow to those schools and what that might mean for those schools. But you can easily see, especially with this court, those schools turning around and say, no, no, no, no. That is our religious belief. You have to let us do that. And you've already said that you have to fund us. You can't force us to do that. So I think it's a little bit of a distinction without a difference coming, especially since the court already decided it. But one thing that our groups, the secular movement, Americans united, all these different groups of Americans atheists, American atheists, excuse me, have argued is that if we're going to send public funds to private religious schools, then that means public standards public regulation public accountability is coming too. That is theoretically an open question moving forward that we are going to see a clash on soon. Well, I'll wear the negatron hat on that one. But I'm right there with you. But good argument. And I guess where I want to kind of close, I love that you are always thinking about ways that we can be active and take our moment of despair, but then pick ourselves back up the pavement and get back in the trenches and do the hard work. I just want to emphasize the position that that puts us in. And so to be clear, and I agree with this 100%. Your position, the position at Americans united is now get behind the idea that as state laws, it should be restricted to public funds, go to public institutions, and that it was our misguided humanitarian efforts to open those up that created this particular doorway. And so I just want to be clear that the reason those exceptions got put in in the first place was out of liberal compassion to say, hey, I totally get it. It must suck to live in rural Maine and to not have a high school within an hour of your house. And so yeah, you got to private school down the street. Great..

"Hello, and welcome to let's talk, a podcast series produced by hazel and Betty Ford. I'm your host, William C moyers. If you've tuned into our award winning podcast series over the years, you're familiar with doctor Joseph Lee. He's been a guest here before, sharing his expertise as an addiction psychiatrist focused on helping young people and their families. He's also an author, public speaker, and advocate for access to care and recovery from substance use disorders. But today, today we talk leadership, vision and the power of telling stories with doctor Lee and his new role as the president and CEO of hazel and Betty Ford. Welcome, doctor Lee. Thanks. Thanks for having me on. Great talking to you again. Good to see you again. Tell us quickly now that you're in this new role. What are three things personally that you want our viewers, our audience to know about you today? Oh man, that's tough. It makes me feel like I'm on a dating show. But I guess first off, you know, I've had the privilege of having experiences that have enhanced my empathy during the pandemic. And what I mean by that is when this pandemic started, I was a frontline worker as a medical director. And I saw all the effects of stigma, the increase in substance use. The lack of PPE, the fear, the inspiration, the courage of our staff. And so that's something I'll never forget is something about me is I am a frontline worker at heart. And I connect with our employees and our ambassadors in that way. And so that's something that's very important. Now that I'm CEO. Second thing is I'm a big fan of duke basketball and Oklahoma sooners football. I'm not a huge fan of the gophers. I think their colors are kind of like a Harry Potter. Harry Potter school. I'm just kind of kidding. But I like that. And the third is I'm a very value driven person..

"It's all about the opportunity for these nonprofits to collaborate with one another and one of the things that we've done to increase the impact of some of our great organizations who are serving youth of Children. Is we've added some common spaces in the building that could serve as incentive to bring more kids to the space so that we could help funnel the kids into the other great opportunities that exist Most recently we took an old locker room and we turned it into the best life you describe is to say it's a It's a totally free David Buster. It's this amazing arcade with all the coolest games of the kids asked for which are all from like the nineties, by the way, so I think they googled him because I don't think they grew up with street fighter NBA Jay but anyway, and we put in a sound like a Pac man. There is her. Well, there's a four player, Pac man where the Pac Man's can eat each other. Larry, you gotta come over. We could say that we can consider this work related, because absolutely at all times that of the best shit, right? Right? It does. Basically the kids can play an arcade as long as they're involved in after school programming, So it's totally free. But you got to be involved in the program and you gotta be consistent. Another thing we put in Is a totally free laundry mat, and this one was a real surprise to me. I learned a year ago that at the time the number one reason kids were turned from school in Detroit is because of lack of access to the ability to wash their clothes. And so we responded to bad thanks to some funding for the Jewish funds, and we put in our free laundry mat. We also took the swimming pool, which we tried to give away to several organizations for free, but no one wanted it because it cost a quarter billion dollars years that we build it in with concrete. Turned it into this after school tutoring space. Because the demand for tutoring and mentorship is so high even higher than what we've been able tormund it with our great tenants who are here and so we're all working collaboratively and really excited about the latest greatest that we've been able to do here to the space. Yeah, it's awesome, and I can't wait to get back there and then develop our growing relationship with first tea as well. And so I know you well enough to know that you're many things all good, by the way, and you're an entrepreneur. You have a great vision. And so what are you looking forward to is? It relates to life remodeled in the future and 2021 beyond so what's on the horizon? Well, as we talked about earlier, you've seen quite an evolution organization's strategy. Our mission has remained the same. We exist. The bridge people across device to help transform each other's last. We believe all this division were experiencing around race. Religion, politics, socio economic differences. Division is keeping us from being who were meant to be a human's. We're better together and so everything that we do is about that. Now that said, I believe after 10 years we've discovered our niche in terms of our strategy. And our programs of our six day project, our home repairs those air here to stay. And so is this program of acquiring a vacant school building Repurpose ng and turning it into this one stop shop of opportunity. And it's incredibly socially impactful in its financially self sustainable because once we pay for it with the renovations, it pays for itself through the presence of our tenants, which we charge them under market value to be here and were able to do that because of the philanthropic dollars through construction and were convinced this model needs to be replicated. This model needs to exist in several neighborhoods in the city of Detroit, and so for us, that's about a 5 to 7 year come in that per community. Right now. We're trying to figure out where we're going to go next, and we only want to go where we where we're wanted to be in a community that says we need this. We want this. We want to partner with life for model. And and then it's a mutually beneficial relationship. Right? We're learning the community. The community is gaining additional resources and opportunities, so we haven't solidified 100% where we're gonna be yet, But I will be very transparent with everyone in that our number. One candidate is Cooley High School. That's where we want to be. And we're in the process of the service discerning if that is the perfect fit. But but that's why I hope everything ends up going next. Excellent. And Cooley is, I think, just from what I know it's about three times the size of dirty that right? Let's see a 321,000 square feet compared to dirty 143,000 square feet and sitting on 18 acres compared to Dorothy's eight and it's been vacant self. It is in almost critical condition. It needs to be renovated soon or that building will be unreachable. And so is the project. We're trying to figure out over the next few months. If it's a go or no go All right. So, uh, well, I hope it's a go because I want to be involved from the Children's Foundation and several different ways. And if people haven't seen these schools there, unbelievable. Architecturally. They're like little castles. Almost and so they need to be renovated, and they need to know. I have a rebirth and you're doing that, so hopefully that'll happen. I just want to say when I tell people we rehab schools. Typically, they think about these boring, ugly jail looking buildings that we often build today. But I say the best way to look at his think about Harry Potter school. That's what these schools look like. They were built the twenties like a dirty, You pull up to the front of the building, and you think you're arriving at a state? It's so cool, so keep up the great work at life remodeled. And the Children's Foundation wants to be a long standing partner of yours, So I look forward to that. So keep us posted on where you're going Next. All right, brother. We're.
