So it wasn't you know, to become what it's turned out to be, but I followed that pathway. And, uh, I became a senior program that I come from a really big personal growth company. In a resigned and I went and to my own private coaching business and then writing books, and here we are 15 years later, it's ah, completely transformed and unrecognizable. "Aj began his Medical Korea Olea than moist. When he was still a child I would scrub up and help his dad in surgery at their family run hospital in rural India? AJ shares his father's mission to bring medical care and education to as many people in the developing world. As possible to that end, he even helped produce a bollywood film. Hi Aj. Thera- let's start with your dad. Told me about about him where did he grow up? So my father grew up in the state of Russia where Mumbai, the capital essentially his family were economics lives there were cotton pickers and I think the credit for what my father became should without any doubt Goto one of the most intelligent women I've met in my life and that was my grandmother although she was illiterate, you couldn't read or write. She had fathomed that the village and is environment would come out of this cycle of poverty and deprivation through education. It was her real gold to choose one person from the village to go ahead into secondary education college, and then how the village eventually. Well, how unusual was it for for kids like your dad to go on to further education all it would be extremely unusual. In fact, most of the kids would probably start working in the fields. Seven right and so they'd probably have primary education and that would be the individ I understand from the stories. My father told me that my grandmother would make every single libra but. All Copper Penny into an earthen pot at the end of each day of work, and once that was full, they would choose that one child who was supposed to be very special and then send them onwards. FAW Secondary Education and Higher Education, and how did they come to choose your dad? Well, my dad was without any doubt the pick of the bunch but my grandfather and grandmother especially had a huge conflict of interest. There is no way she could actually recommend her own son to be chosen. So, she left it to the village to decide and I don't think the villages any problems nominating my father he's always been one that they knew who would go. Was the caste system still a a presence in in life when your dad was growing up Aj over much. My father's family comes from the now. So called other backward class, there is the shed you'll costs the shed, you'll tribes, and then the backward class these are all. The former conglomerate of what Matt Miranda used to call the untouchables, but he never called them the untouchables. He called them the Harry Johns, which is children of God But these are the people who were economically deprived who are obviously educationally deprived who were expected to do the menial tasks and and the the hard labor. So this would have been the future that you dad could have expected except field grandma's brilliant idea of having the pot in the in the.

"Yeah Yeah it's it's I think it's hopeful in the end because it's saying that that with better farming practices and more awareness of all of these compounds that we started using in the nineteen hundreds. That aren't great. That are that are good for very specific things but are not great for other reasons That by just being more aware of stuff like that and by changing Consumer and industry expectations about the cost of food that we can all make good change in the world and we all want to do that. We do and I wanted to end on a slightly nicer note dot one so so tell us a nice story okay. Okay so as I was doing the research. We're this episode. There's one variety of strawberry. That kept coming up. It was kind of like a white whale almost like they were talking about. But I found a whole article that in two thousand Sixteen David Karp at the Smithsonian reported on the journey of horticulturist. Harry John Schwartz to try and breed the favorite strawberry of Jane Austen. Okay that has long been out of the rotation and it's called the musk strawberry yes because of its of its Musky. Scent has a very strong smell. It was described as spicy and floral and mixed of honey and wine and cheese Yeah okay it was. A popular CULTIVAR in Europe from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries and Jane austen loved. It loved it but they were soft and didn't transport well so they fell out of fashion in favor of Hardier cultivars. They're still around. They were just barely very rare. Fdr fell in love with them after trying the child while traveling in Germany so much so he asked the secretary of Agriculture to dabble into Muscat varieties of strawberries. We gotta get back me my strawberries. Yeah IT'S A. It was a really interesting. We're giving you a lot of little asserts that didn't go check out. It was cool. The person who's trying to bring these back just described him trying all of these strategies. Nope nope. That's what I understand. A lot of strawberry. Researchers wind up doing just eating like a lot of strawberries and being like No not quite. Yeah maybe this one. I don't know I I can't imagine that you know our very first episode. We did on sparkling wine the Our friend the brewer. He said something I stayed with me to this day was that he was waiting until his pallet was refined enough to be able to appreciate some really expensive. I think from the titanic. The bottle of something that he's just saving. He's like yeah. My palettes not developed enough rights to taste it yet. So I'm just GONNA wait. I still think about that. Yeah but I mean I guess if every day you're trying strawberries you learn to pick out on certain things. I guess. Share impressive very impressive. That's about what we have to say on the strawberry. We do have a little bit more for you. But first we've got one more quick break for word from our sponsor How do you judge someone not by what they say by what they do? We're a nation of doers. I Apologize I had do the choreography. Laura you don't know how excited I was today to open my podcast APP to see the title waxing poetic about sticky rice in my podcast feed as someone with a Thai mother who was born and lived for a few years and Johnson Laos. I have tried my whole life to express my love and admiration for glutinous. Rice are as always called it growing up sticky rice. We ate it with almost every meal much. Like how other cultures use bread to mop up sauces. We use balls of sticky rice to scoop up top with spicy say and Swirl and Papaya Salad but no one I grew up with had ever heard of it and even nowadays it is rare to find on Asian menus once. A friend of mine asked how to make sticky rice. They serve with Chinese takeout. I was AGHAST I. I informed him that the rice from Chinese takeout was not sticky rice and then proceeded to inform him that to make rice. That doesn't Cook into individual little loose grains. It'd be impossible to lift with a pair of chopsticks. He had to start with. Rice does not come from a box and has nothing to do with the San Francisco. Treat my two girls grew up loving sticky rice too which became a bit awkward when I took. My youngest pediatrician and the doctor asked her what her favorite foods were. In addition to glutinous rice. My daughter loves steamed artichokes. So her three-year-old reply was stinky rice and leaves. She didn't know they were called artichokes. I can only wonder what my doc thought I had my child on the daily stinky rice news sounds of the things. That's not the worst words. Three year olds are good at the worst they are Antonio wrote. I'm the longtime listener. Who wrote in last year about the pineapple mention in the favourite? Thank you. Yeah well. I was catching up episodes. That came out around the holidays. The Pineapple redux episode was like an awesome related. New Year's surprise I visited Hawaii quite a bit in the past few years so I really enjoyed the episode's related to your trip especially the visit to a pineapple farm. I just got back from Hawaii where I toured the quiet sugarloaf of pineapple farm the sugarloaf a white pineapple that super sweet fleshy that you can even eat the core. Unfortunately the panels are in short supply and the farm had a lot of backwaters. Each person was only able to bring back a baby pineapple. You picked so we made sure to power-wash them twice to ensure that they could pass agricultural inspections to bring back to the mainland. We gave one to our pineapple obsessed friend who is attempting to PLANT THEM IN OUR CONSIDERABLY. Cooler Northern California climate. This friend on a previous trip to Hawaii vowed to eat a pineapple a day. That scheme came in handy when we went to the beach and my husband and I both got stung by jellyfish. We had no remedies nearby and didn't WanNa pee on the wound. We realized we needed something. Acidic to neutralize the sting. Our friend had packed pineapple chunks as snacks for his family so we started rubbing our limbs with pineapple chunks. Which did the job just fine. As for the SUGARLOAF PINEAPPLE. They're only sold at farmers markets and stores uncle and a few specialty grocery stores when supply on Oahu and Maui one can order and get them shipped to the mainland. But better yet you can all do another sabre field trip to the islands. You missed and visit the farm yourselves. A Pineapple Day keeps the stingers away. Well there you go. It's doctor recommended pools. We have to return. I GUESS WE GOTTA GO S. I never would have thought to put pineapple on a jellyfish sting but now my mind is expanded there. A. put up a banner in two thousand fifteen she had the most sold out performances there at that time for whatever reason La Kings fans now get in the NBA teams play the to L. A. King fans think it's bad law doc because they've not played well since that banner went up so anytime the La Kings Nhl Hockey team is playing they cover the banner up because a number of fans complained that they thought it was bad luck that Taylor swift had sold out concert banner there and the team President said the connection to our fans is our highest priority and through their engagement they made it clear that the banner shouldn't be part of the game experience we didn't see an issue in covering it in games in fact we see it as an opportunity to show our fans that we hear them and by the way the number of fans equates to Konya he's the person that wants to know she was just named one of the foremost beautiful women in the world I believe Taylor Swift gee-gee Hadid's sister who did it's the goals number one it's the golden rule thing yeah it's about the ratio of the way the the fact that the team acquiesced to these fans this is dumb I just wouldn't WanNA put up with the swiftness they're going to be very upset about that apparently the kings fans are on aware of what kind of wrath down upon them they'll find them out individual Cleveland browns what's going on there so this is talk about a fan experience here so A couple of weeks ago the browns are at home Tennessee Titans player scores a touchdown does kind event at Lambeau leap Lambeau leap I think one of the players did a Cleveland leaps into the stands and one of the fans poured a beer on the on the title owning not good the browns accidentally falsely accused person who wasn't even at the game so Eric Smith this fan is filing a lawsuit and claiming that he wants a public retraction and financial damages stories all of the accusations in fact he said not only was not there he was DJ at a wedding and hadn't been a game in nine years. How did they pick him how did they choose and Brian How do you pick a guy that was in half and the team called him and told him they were doing this and that he was banned for life from the stadium uh-huh and he's like he's getting this call at work as co workers like he was like in shock how embarrassing for him I mean for the world to know that he's Dj -ing at a wedding even sharing the podcast the mob and Sherry odd casquette download the free Bob and Sheri APP website or wherever you get your podcast we're back with Jim Zoki and a baseball player and a doggy door and a Taser what the Hack Jim the dog was not harmed because there's no dog action the story just a doggy door police arrested San Diego padres minor league pitcher he's playing in for the Peoria team accused of well apparently there was a dog in the story Jacob Nixes pitcher accused of breaking into a suburban Phoenix home through a doggy door or shot with a Taser by the homeowner her no he was on alcohol or drugs L. no tried to crawl through the doggy door of a home before four am the homeowners governed knicks kicked him in the face tasers him before his teammate who was with them pulled them back out of the dog in Asia in the back by the homeowner police arrested him he got released on one hundred dollars bond don't know why he due to the homeowners have the Saint Bernard I mean we have we have like a cat door couldn't get my head in it a little stupid come coming in to the talking door but if you had like a Labrador Z. trying to go to the line there was alcohol was a factor is and there was another guy that didn't try to go to the doctor the wait is going south let me pull you up your feet have you ever had so much to drink that you decided to get into your neighbor's house through the pet door anyone in the room wants to answer that ever had that much hard past looking at todd and we're all looking to plead the fifth todd you ever been tempted to go through I don't remember this neighbor guys in interesting cases and the though I mean on the one hand he's got a doggy door big enough for a human being evidently to get inside his house on the other hand and he's GonNa kick you in the face yeah let's let's end today with the Pope's support of Hash egg seats and the thing is Hashtag saints and this is a guy that uses the word saints a lot right Pope Francis so he sends out some kind of tweet that included the hash tags aints which happens to be the New Orleans Saints Official always that would happen so he was showing support as it turned out to the New Orleans saints with the Emoji that POPs up after that for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars as saints would go on to win and the team thanked the Vatican for their support after the game on their twitter account put it lose after this Hashtag blessed and highly favored Miami fans were saying we need the Holy Father on our side here's the thing got forgotten right pope could help the saints or the cardinals I mean maybe next Sunday yes helped out there jim before we kick you out of the room how are you how was London. "His he cannot stop the brain of his from the dump stuffy says every day, and you know, I don't want to we're going to ask him if he ever use locker room talk wonder, what his answer to that is going to be because I have a pretty good suspicion in my head where I think he probably has, you know. And then we got the story of creepy. Uncle Joe swimming, naked in front of secret service agents advice, I mean, oh who does this. Anyway, here's his tape. Just released coming. To you. Hold on vision. Always been record today. I wanna talk about Chechen corden encouragement I've made to women. So men made them uncomfortable. Always trying to be in my career voice. Trying to make a human connection. That's one responsibilities. I shake cage. I hope people I grabbed in my shoulders say you can do this and. And. Women been young all the way always been way. I've tried to show I care about listed. Nobody years nowhere. What I've been through the things faced found that scores. Hundreds of people come up to me. Reach down for. Filthy, something anything that may open the tragedy. They're going through. And so I just. I never thought of politics cold. It is always thought about connecting. With people say shaking hinge on the shoulder encouragement now, and now it's all about taking selfish together, you know, social reforms begin to change shifted and protecting personal space. And then reset and I get I get I hear what they're saying. I understand it, and I'll be much more. That's my responsibility Meyer responsible in Alameda. But I always believe governing quite frankly life for that matter is. Connect with people that will change I will be more mindful respectful people's personal space. And that's a good thing. With wife to empower women worked my whole life to Ren abuse. So the idea that I can't adjust to the fact that personal space is important more important than it's ever been is just. Okay. Crazy uncle Joe. He's got a long way to go. We now have two more women have accused Biden anyway, and it gets really even more strange. I told him we talk about the Lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. I mean, these are serious charges. This is not you know in your grill personal space in your face it at a unwanted touching holding smelling rubbing noses. I mean, can you imagine rubbing another person's knows? I mean, it's whole thing. Creeps me out. And he is creepy and he's nuts. I mean, he he just he's really nuts. Got this. These two women that have come out and. You know, they're saying the same thing we now have he's determined to run. Anyway, apparently, you have a writer telling the New York Times that she had an uncomfortable encounter with Biden and Minneapolis in two thousand twelve when Biden on his top advisors telling backers and donors that he was still expected to enter the presidential race. After Easter the hill reported anyways, taking this all very seriously still committed to running. Got a lot of other problems. No. Nancy pelosi. I'm a member of the straight arm club. I just pretend that you have a cold than I have a cold. That's what he's advising Biden to tell everybody all the time. I have a cold pretend you have a cold keep your distance joined the straight arm club. Wow. Wonder if Donald Trump did this and all those videos that Donald Trump? And kissing people on the lips invading personal space. Remember when they had the top fold New York Times article about his ex girlfriend. Harry John was mentioned in that article. I started interviewing the women one by one. There's none of this is true. New York Times doing everything they can do to elect Hillary back. Then. So you have two more people. Now talk about the encounter twenty twelve incident writer DJ hill said Biden put his hand on her shoulder, then dropped it down or back in a way that made her very uncomfortable. All hell and her husband were posing for pictures with him at a fundraiser, Minneapolis. He said her husband noticed the movement made a joke about it only. He knows his intent. He told the times of four saying if something makes you feel uncomfortable. You have to be able to say it in second incident of former college student. Caitlyn Caruso told the paper that Biden rested his hand on her thumb. Why even as she squirmed in her seat showing this comfort and hugged her just a little bit too long at an event on of all things sexual assault. Now, the university Nevada Vegas told the paper that she was nineteen at the time. Recounted her own story of sexual assault at that event. Pretend you have a cold. That's teaching crazy. Uncle overton. Do you have a cold? Wow. That's a great idea. President now is in. They're blaming Bernie Sanders and right wing trolls for this information, right right wing who's right wing here. Anyway, Jill brand won't say anything. She's another one of the I believe IRS, and a pack has now released a creepy. Joe Biden, Ed. Then you got the issue. We'll get into at the top of the next hour. John solemn he has a real issue with his son and Ukrainian officials there because two years after leaving office. He couldn't resist the temptation to break to an audience of foreign policy of foreign policy specialists about the time as vice president that he's strong armed Ukraine into firing their top prosecutor in his own words the video exists. It will bring us on Hannity tonight cameras rolling Biden described how he threatened Ukrainian president the Ukrainian president at the time for a shaneco in March twenty sixteen that the Obama administration would pull a billion dollars in US loan guarantees sending the former Soviet Republic Ford insolvency if it didn't immediately fire the prosecutor General Viktor Shokhin, I said, you're not getting the billion. I'm going to believe in here. And I think the next. About six out. Why are you dumping it? All right. Son of a B. He got fired. There you go and they put in place someone. What was quote solid at the time. Now, here's the problem. He's not telling you, the prosecutor was investigating his son. Who was on air force to? Making millions and millions of dollars. We're going to break that investigator reporter John Solomon coming up on that part. I know that. There's just this massive double standard. And that that is the whole sick part of all this now to go to the issue of Biden swimming, naked this is from US news back in August of twenty fourteen headline Biden, swims naked upsetting female secret service agents, according to a book. Anyway, author tells us news the book as well reported balanced anyway, it was written by Ronald Kessler is never heard a bad word about Ronald Kessler. We've interviewed him in the past about he writes a lot of books. And anyway, it's the first family detail, and the book goes into a long explanation agents say that, you know, whether at the vice president's residents in Delaware Biden as a habit of swimming in his pool nude. And then he says female secret service agents find that offensive. I think anybody would find that offensive. I don't want to find a secret service agent. I'm not wanting to. Oh. What you don't care? You don't give a flying rip do you? I don't wanna watch a naked anybody swim. Well, you're bathing suit on an almost people don't really wear basis these days, but I'm one of those beach people. Anyway, I can't sit there for hours and hours. There are people that can sit on the beach all day. I don't know how they do it. I've tried you know, if I'm not playing football, or I'm not playing, you know, with my my son saying here who also have the patience of in that it's not that. It's so it's so that who wants to sit in the blazing hot sun in any way. You could barely sit here. I didn't give you a microphone be out here. I'd be standing. We stand we used to stand more. But I still stand when I do the radio show a lot. And you know, they got these standing desks now, and you can have a little treadmill in the Nathan you can kind of walk slow pay dare you to put one of those in your studio. Go ahead, haven't it. By Christina wins the producer. She says, it, silent Shakespeare that's. Like no, it's not silent it's speechless but there. Are even speeches in, it we break our role but I basically wanted to let. Me go back a little my, mother was an, English teacher English lit major and she wouldn't, let us read comic books but she would let. Us read those. Classics illustrated you remember those and so I read Romeo and. Juliet in the comics version and when I got to ninth grade and had, to read that Shakespeare text which sometimes, look like a foreign language I kind of knew where it was going. Because of the comic book so this is kind of what I'm doing and sort of priming the pump for young and old audiences that. Follow asleep at Shakespeare festivals so they kind, of get a sampling of I don't know. How many plays we deal we're not counting really how many of his plays we refer to or how many quotes that I'm going to guess somewhere, about fifteen Of his place and my background dance and voice as well as. Acting so I thought would it be interesting if we pull in some of his non specie features like dance and song stage combat some. Comedy and make it kind of a vaudeville, sort of thing and I decided I want. To write a play that connects that I didn't want it all stop and start so I decided to make speech ler speed executive I feel better now Speechless Shakespeare I decided.
