"Case in point, Phil because it's like in the sixties, when I got to North Carolina for the first time. Discovered beach music and I've never been the same. Well, of course, Beach music has nothing to do with surf music on the West Coast, and it also in many ways has nothing to do with what's down the shore. In South Jersey. But Philly because knows all about that, and he has agreed to join us for the next hour. If you're saying who is this? I've got a link on rolly dot net to his Facebook group. And you can read all about it or just listen up. You'll hear all about it right here. All right, So let's see what we can do here. Hello, Philly Because welcome. Hello, rally. It's great to be Oh, here you again and it's just wonderful. A posted your picture and and it was like and fill it up. Everybody says I remember rally and, uh Until I said hello, especially like Caesar. Berry of the Times wants to sell over here and I first off. Let me just say that when you play that that music That that is even be tracks for May. Yeah? Yeah, Z just terrific. And a zay say, you know, you almost have to be a local or regional even know about this, And it's just so so neat that I thought it deserved a lot more exposure. Now I got to say I know about you through your CDs, the ones that I have, and listeners call they request such a zoo. Who do you love, which I agree is just like the perfect soul record. But tell me more about you. What got you into this? Well, I come from musical family. My mom was the piano teacher of the neighborhood and my uncle Jimmy Saunders took Frank Sinatra's place, he says Police Center and Harry James band And in fact, there's only there's only second songs. I believe that Frank Sinatra co wrote or wrote, And One of them was with my Uncle Jimmy Saunders. So I always have this have his background where I always loved the great American songbook of songs and I still playing when I I'll be hard sometimes to play to play cocktails for something like a wedding or something. I always refer to the Great American songbook. So always had that with me as a kid, my my mom when she was a preteen Her father on the bakery and south Philadelphia was spotted bakery and because my uncle was would have liked the the Bobby Rydell of the day in South Philly, he would bring home Visit and bring home Harry James. He brought a lot of lot of people that at the time of your tiny box, so the people of Johnny Desmond and my grandpa pops of house Was something so I grew up with all the stories I then I get into when I get into high school we have. Ah, we have a band High school band, and we actually We did pretty good. Where were you? We were legends in our own minds. But we did get a lot of TV. And we did a lot of rascal stuff and, uh, hang on sloopy kind of things, but we were on TV with that hearse. But the Al Karama sure and then I went home. Then we had another group. We opened for cookie jar on the crumbs when I was 17 and this is at the barn in Wildwood, New Jersey, So I start playing the clubs. And why would when I'm 17 And it was a very good year. 1968. We could be drive this week. E don't have your familiar, including jar, but, uh He's sort of like the picture in the clubs and the casinos down in Las Vegas. So, uh, I heard him sing and I was with my friends because I do the The San Genero feast in Las Vegas, which is one of largest outdoor feast in in the city, and I was walking and I hurt. And and my friends would be, you know, that is that's cookie jar. And, uh and I went up to my should. I haven't seen you since 1968. We had a good old time We're uniting, but we will come from. It's funny when I'm in Las Vegas. I'm doing the same music for the Crowder. I'm doing my wild with days. I'm doing all the way to Cape May and the people love it. They lot. Of course There's a lot of Philly people there, but there's a lot of entertainers. They come from. This area here. The South Jersey Philadelphia area and the thing about US and Philadelphia Is that In fact, last night I was watching the show and they were like He did this thing where they were knocking. It was one of these old films about the seventies, and they were knocking Jersey and from the Philadelphia perspective, we always looked at South Jersey has the Garden state And it was always beaches. It was paradise. So my family's got a house there in north and while Woods first we live with my my aunt Lucy. My next door neighbor in that house of Montgomery having it was Bobby right down. So I have pictures of me playing too and touching the street with Bobby, and then we moved to North Wildwood to all my life. I had this speech experience. And it's a different brand of beach. You know, I know that you have the Carolinas have their brand, which is which is actually sort of takes a lot of Philadelphia and but we way having like a The mixture of the bandstand pop. And the arm did Philly arm Day. And I just felt upon that and boy did you ever developed a following from that? I'll tell you, you know, there's there's a lot of local and regional performers. But you have you have pretty much made yourself a brand. Well, Yeah, well, I appreciate you saying that the total stumbled upon it. Because I was playing piano on, Um One of the hotels and Avalon. And people wanted to hear at the time. This is going back to round like the nineties, mid nineties and at the time people wanted Tonto here on the way to Cape May all the time was like me. Summer anthem of the Delaware Valley and Probably a lot of delicious don't know it. But it Zen YouTube because you two has it. But the point was that I said, Well, let me go back in. You re imagine this song because the way it was presented with Al Alberts and cozy morally, It was sort of like Was for you to be the World War. Two generators. And then I said, Let me let me put a Bobby Darin swing kind arrangement to this anyway. Then that got me into making an album. When I made the album I put like down by the ocean on a couple do wop songs on there. I started noticing number one. They loved my rendition of all the way to Cape May have got the front page news story of the Sunday Philadelphians choir, which was back then was a big deal because 4001 people reading newspapers every day. And there was this Sunday and was the front page story my album and we got my mom who was the most ruthless record promoter at the time. She was about like 79 80 years old. And she got me on all these boardwalk stores. You got me and Barnes and Noble's got me by the places. And then I.

Before Elvis, the Beatles before you know you name it. Frank Sinatra was the one that made somebody men jealous because they're you know, so many women would go crazy over him and screaming back, and that was the term the bobby soxers. "There. Yeah. That's what I was thinking. What if Dan Arnold Show? Yeah Anyway. Every. Time I. See that name that's what I think of There's one player who I always see her name. I think if somebody like that but I am. I'll find it I find. All right. So just assessing this team here obviously, I'm GonNa like it since he went back to back stub Wisconsin running backs here in the third and fourth round with Jonathan Taylor on that you agree, yeah that's the one that was missing I like the receivers on this squad tight ends aren't my favorite, but to get awesome knocks in the thirteenth, I I like it but he probably will need a breakout from either Smith or Knox here to be competitive especially with that position. Yes receivers are pretty strong to tyreek hill digs, Allen Darius Slayton, and then the jailings of those guys. I can't tell you can't really count them. No, you can't So you see he's GonNa be I think he might be. He might have to worry about the flex a little bit if there's a single injuries to his team. So I, think that's my concern. It's so Chandler Dalton supreme the penultimate team we're GONNA talk about tonight here Dave drew brees, Joe Borough and Sam Darnold quarterback running backs or miles sanders Kenyan Drake Kareem Hunt Matt Breda Ca Sean von the hime hines receivers Dj more Allen Robinson, Marquees Brown, Julian, Edelman, La viscous t higgins, tons, or Tyler Higby, Jay Stern Burger, and we'll. Item and changing my mind again, this is my pretty underwriter and here's why we were talking about. Here's why there are so many players on this team that I have talked up on the H. F. Our over the course of this off season I've talked Dj more Allen Robinson Kareem Hunt Julian Adamant Matt Brita Jay. Stern. Burger team Hines, all these players you're listening to the show they well, you must listen to me they just you out apparently I mean you like some of those players as well but I just I really like this is a team that I could not only see myself drafting. Team construction-wise I could see my self drafting it player wise. I mean there's a lot of players that really like now, there's a couple of duds that I don't like feel but that's true of everybody. We'll all running backs pass catchers if you look at it Sanders Drake Aunt Brita. Heinz every one of them there's no big bruisers. Are you know none of those guys in there? Yeah. I agree with you for the most part they do I mean, let's keep in mind they do need the Burger or justly leads to release. You know they hate me half to stay the course if he doesn't there in some deep trouble. It's Like. Don't worry about that. Yeah. I mean come on man it's like. He's in Wisconsin Guy. Sternberg. Wisconsin. The sounds eats brought and stuff but For the packers to he doesn't hasn't done much yet. So I mean, let's not get to stir crazy here well that that happened for me in like February. Discern. Actually I went stemberger crazy after the packers did not take tight under the draft. Yeah. I mean I. Guess They took the war but they didn't take a first or second round tied on anyhow. It's it's a nice team f like it rounding things up tonight here with the twelfth pick is four for four as Peter overset. He gets Matt Ryan Aaron Rodgers as quarterbacks. Camakers Zach Moss Boston Scott. Aj Dylan deandre Washington Barrington Evans at running back receivers are Davante Adams Chris Godwin Aj Brown Calvin Ridley DJ Chart Nikki Harry James Washington tight ends are many TJ Hopkinson and coal comex. Dave we we talked about this team. It I. Think it. It went according to what overs that was gonNA happen. The question is, can he get fortunate enough with a lot of these backup R- running back so they took if he does think he's GonNa be okay. like the tight ends and The you know the quarterback's are are going to be steady at ease as well. Yeah I mean this is not the way I would have drafted this team like he he had a strategy if there's a lot of running back injuries and works out with acres, he could be in really good shape. There's definitely standalone Value Zach Moss Boston Scott maybe AJ Dylan endearing Evans is already getting talked up a it as a pass catcher in that in that backfield. So he might have some standalone value I actually liked is I thought that kill Harry and James Washington picks receiver Sense. If. You have those top guys. A lot of times people go so-called called. Take four they like twelve rounds then everybody else's total garbage on the screen. Yeah. So I think he was thoughtful in that in that. So I give Peterson credit for that. Overall seem turned out pretty good I. Mean I it's hard to like it as much as some of the other ones that are more well-balanced but it's a good nice squad over on it has a shot and Pete for sure and that's the point either go bigger home right and that's what they do here too far out of my comfort zone for best ball slim draft for me absolutely love this team day but I do recognize the firepower and the ammunition that is simmering. And and saw king under over that's watch them could end up taking out the other eleven owners. And that is the action completed tonight here for pros vs joes number four, fat boy slim I wanNA. Thank my callers tonight. My Guess Matt Growth Shane Hallam Robbie Russell Good luck you guys this season WanNa think Armani. They've got the F. "Guitar player magazine once asked me who who is your influence, and I said, Hank Williams. And they said Hank Williams doesn't play electric guitar. And, but that's where it was and music to me is like a facet in my life. I I love many things I've trained lions and Tigers for raising for thirty years and been in the Marshall with thirty years when flying airplanes and just doing so many things that are very interesting and music was just one of them. And I was raised actually listening to the big band era like guy Lombardo, Harry James in the first person that I really listen to us chain coupon drums, and that's where I get this. This heavy staccato drumming affect on playing like, Mick Fleetwood Fleetwood MAC once said to me watching me said my my God, he says you play your the most progressive Garissa I've ever seen in my life. You look like you're playing drums, and and I do I'm playing all the different parts of the drums when I play my guitar. So actually drums was my first and Jeanne Cooper was my first big influence. Some of the surf music stars didn't really serve most most notably the beach, boys. But you did you actually did serve. Is there a connection between the sounds that you'd hear surfing in the kind of music you were playing yesterday actually sounds were actually compared to? Actually, my lions and Tigers and the ocean the power of my Tigers and the power of the ocean. When I would get thrown across the cage with one blow or seeing the cat goes with twenty two hundred pounds per square inch by four stainless, steel pan. And you just marvel at man cannot control that and then you get out in the wave, and then you get out in and you stop paddling, and you're facing a six footer or an eight footer and let alone a ten footer. It is the most frightening thing in the world, and you just have to just dig down and go for it. And then when you get sucked up and taken over, you never feel strength like that and your life, and you just can't stop that that policy you must ride with it. And that's when I learned to really go with the flow of everything in life and the waves did create my feelings of that sound like a deliver wave coming over the top of my head. I stick my finger in the wall and get my ear up as close as I could get into that tube. Or then doing a bottom turn and missing it and getting sucked up over the top. And being just crunched right through your board. And those days we used to big big ten footers, you know, did the sound of the ocean. Making wanna get that that loud amplified sound that you want it. Yeah. It was it's a combination of the ocean. And the roar off my Tigers and lions and just putting it all together that force and the of the ocean just has. Has the two sounds. It has to one that comes over the top of your head. It's a lacy sound. And then it has that bottom rumbling sound. And then it has that wipe out sound and with my big sixty gauge strings guitar players are using sevens and eights nines, the slinky's know, intense, Mike, my thinnest string is a fourteen and wound. And then I use to eighteen and one's for my second and third string. And then my fostering, I here's a thirty eight wound in my fifth. They use a fifty eight forty eight and then I use have fifty eight or a sixty once I can get. So this is like really thick strings, you're using and that gives you. Yeah. It gives it a big. Joe Sullivan calls him bridge, cables, he. It gives you a real real fat thick thick sound along with the combination of what goes into the amplifier and the guitar, and the the speaker, it's a combination of everything but playing them it's very hard. It's it's very painful because it's like sticking taking your finger and and going up and down the sidewalk with it. That's why I make faces everybody goes. Oh, man. You make the neatest faces because that's pain. Now, what about the picking style that you developed the picking came from my father, my parents? My father's side of the family, his grandparents his mother and father were born in Beirut, Lebanon, and my my mother's side of the family were born in Poland. So they I was subject to the the musical styles of both countries. But when I had an influence of that Arabic music. When I came to California kid asked me said can you play on one string 'cause I was playing, but I called rockabilly, and I developed a rocket style of strumming guitar because I didn't have a whole band. So I I would go. So now when I did that this little boy is probably about ten and at my first show at the rendezvous balm and Balboa, that's when it opened up like seventeen surfers and the surfing when he says can you play on one string? And I didn't know what to do. And I says we'll come back tomorrow night. And I'll have something for you just to get get rid of them. And then when I went home, I says, oh my God. I'm going to get caught. I'm going to be found out that I'm a fake that I can't play on one string or something. And and I I thought and I says visiting new and miss Lewis played very slowly, I wouldn't and quadrupled the sound. I went because I wanted a machine gun staccato picking sat style which is very difficult to play. Because you have to keep your meter properly. And as a result, you break stainless steel strings, and you melt picks down two or three of them in a song. I'm they melt, and that's why I have a special pick pickle reach down. I throwing out when I play pick one up, and I continue melting. But that's how I get that sound like a machine gun, stop picking style. Let's hear your original recording of miserable which you made back in one thousand nine hundred sixty two. Yeah. I think the original people that did it was are probably turning over in their grave. And the way I play it. What was the scene like on the beach when you started surfing and flying? We would.
