"Enemy that series hits that right on the head of that entire conversation that we're having a society right now anyways also wonder how much of her popularity has to do with the audiences that are not white male sis hetero but love comics and love comic book characters in love those types of movies in love. Those types of animated series are just starving for a character that they can connect with exactly and so here she is and she's not that she may not look like them but she's at least not that and so they flocked to her because she represents the other end maybe if we started to diversify those characters more you might see some people who love quinn and a black female character. I would love to see them do more with black canary. The or they love harley quinn. Because she was there gateway character but now they also love these other characters that are a more accurate representation of who they are. And it's not so much that everybody can connect with this white bisexual jewish woman but she at least is representing people who are not everyone else in the comic world right now. Yep exactly billy also brought up the fact that kathy and directed birds of prey. And i just want to point out that that is not an insignificant fact because kellyanne her previous film dead. Pigs is a magnificent chinese ethic of the movie that you never would have suspected that dc would come calling after that movie but it is an incredible film and for whatever set of reasons. I think it's remarkable that she was able to take over that film. And i think that there is something very specifically chew the non western gays as well that it's specifically non male non western non white. That is really missing a lot from perspectives in comic book. Movies on the whole right now. And i think in the birds of prey film. I think that was something that allowed a lot of people to connect to harley quinn as the character and to embrace other characters a little differently. We'll see if this trend continues in khloe zhao's upcoming internals. How other people will receive that film as well. I keep hearing damaging narratives about her coming out. That really drive me crazy because everybody wants to drive the narrative toward the zack. Snyder's of the but let's say that's not my purpose anyway and with that but that's the whole thing right because there are so little women especially women of color in the blockbuster sphere making anything that finally went one of them or two of them. Get a shot. It's immediately like oh what can we say about them that this criticism as makers even though they have all the right to be there. S makers as any of the other makers have their right. And that's kind of thing that hollywood needs to unlearn and that's gonna take a lot of time until all the old white men sitting at the tones die basically what you notice whether it's marvel but especially with these see like i said where you have one or brother. Writers is that people top down. Look at things go like yet but this is not my perspective. Comic books are fruit. Boys are men so men can make look at the dark knight. That went well because nolan needed. And nolan is a man with vision so only men with vision. Ma comic book movies. Only penises with is on the is on them are allowed to make comic books and they have to be rooting. And if they can speak with a british accent even better whether they're british or not and if they can mumble with a british accent even better the best thing in a perfect world for these people for these investors would be an elon..

"They haven't completely divorced from how she was. They acknowledge it and they tried to change it. They're trying to evolve from out what she was back then to what she wants to be now in the two thousand twenty s and how that can be a role model to new readers in new people coming into the comic book. I whether it's true animation three movies or through comic books themselves so i think it's a smart move on deceased fat to okay week knowledge stat. How she started might have not been the best way. But we're seeing a lot of young people latch onto her character and her free spiritedness. So we're gonna update who she is and how she feels to match what she should be as a person that can be inspiring even as anti hero to a younger in new newer generations. Coming into this comic book world. I agree with that a million percent and i think a lot to add onto that especially would resume with the transition from the mail gates the female gaze. I think a lot about in suicide squad. There's a moment where it's the entry into the third act where they decided they're going to fight the villain anyways and they're walking down the street and harlequins smashes a window with her bat shop window to take a purse and when she grabs the purse. She bends over from the waist. Like you do to pick anything up. I guess and picks up the purse and grabs it. And i think women obviously can be sexy on screen and women can do anything that they want. They can display their bodies how they see fit and whatever makes sense to them. But that's the difference right there between a male gaze and a female Shots he mailed game. Because you're looking at it from the behind her instead of looking at it. Outside of her is at the purse that has caught her eye and then showing the reaction shot of the guys behind her as she had been over her very revealing shorts. And you don't have to go that far back right like it's not like it's not like we've been doing great job with the male gaze versus female gates in terms of the introduction of these characters. Layla suicide squad is super recent. But i think to an extent margot robbie get some credit for adding heart to the character and giving a performance that allows for there to be more substance in the role to harley quinn as a person than you would have seen maybe if somebody else had taken on the performance instead. I think she does a phenomenal job. And that's i think also what opens the door for kathy and come in and do birds of prey and and really start to expand that character into something else and i think that creates the ball rolling in combination with like why we like the other stuff that you were saying. It's it is. It is a very astute observation of exactly the things that they're grappling with and the.

"These animated series that are much more animated movie series that are much more human oriented like human ordinary experience types of things focused and i think all of the stuff that harlequin is going through the poison. Ivy is going through gives you that background of something. That is a joyful experience to see them figure out. That isn't going up against the titans of the hero world or whatever right like it isn't universe defying expectations. just buck. who am i and what does that mean. And how do i figure that out. And also what am i going to do about dinner later and i love that and then said when you mash all that up with some ultra violence and some foul mouth profanity. That's my jam right there. It's so interesting too. Because i still remember from the very opening line of the animated series when it was a captain raising glass and saying my fellow whites the second i saw that frame i was like oh this is this is. This is my show. I'm gonna like this. I'm gonna like this and then it ends in a rousing cry of fuck the poor and then you're like okay definitely my show definitely my show. It's so interesting. Though how this show is so specifically tied into certain messages as well about capitalism and misogyny and a lot of the things that this particular podcast is all about. And i always have found it so fascinating that harley quinn is the character represents so many different things as an lgbtq plus icon as everything. But she is. Why do you think that there's been this explosion of so many different aspects of media that focus on her right now. Do you think it's because of the way that she is crafted in terms of her social justice messages or the way that narratives are constructed around the think. It's in indeed like how things are changing currently especially with newer generations. How harley quinn was portrayed in the beginning was very from a very misogynistic like very meal gaze point of view whereas now she's involved to being her own character like we all mentioned the she can carry a whole movie. She's the main show for a lot of people and they've made her more independent and have her literally. Honest screen tried to pry loose from that male gaze character world that was bestowed upon her in the nineties. thousands so this whole independent woman independent person. Just going out there doing what you want to do for yourself. Character arc is very liberating m very up to date with how young girls nowadays wanna see themselves as well. they have something that they can actually latch onto. Learn from. What the new harley quinn is doing and if you look at it how they've done it for instance in the animated series..

"I highly recommend that for anyone who is interested in introducing the younger generation to harley quinn. I highly recommend. Also stephanie phillips new reboot of harley quinn. Future state. Amanda conner in jimmy poem. Yati also had a wonderful run of harley quinn as well that i also love but right now what. Stephanie phillips doing i think is absolutely amazing to have a really strong female writing voice on the character which we haven't had before and i think that's really powerful and i'm really happy that the comics industry has kind of stepped up to the plate with that and with birds of prey. I was so so happy to see birds of prey and all of the various team members the way that they came together in that film. I wonder though how the rest of you process that film comparatively to suicide squad or to something else. Was it what you were expecting. It's a much better. I think anyway. It's a much better film than suicide. Squad suicide squad is a lot of fun. Billy makes fun of me. Because i love the soundtrack from that film. Because it's basically the soundtrack from our high school days. It's like nineties dance. Yeah it is. It is great. Don't tell on me. I would but i enjoy watching that movie. It's really fun. But if you strip the soundtrack out of that movie. I think you go it lose a lot of enjoyment from it but the most fun thing about suicide squad is the music and the one liners and watching harlequin. Beat the shit out of people. There's not a lot more to it and birds of prey is in a whole different tier films. That genuinely good movie in. It doesn't need that crutch like well. It'll tap into your nineties. You'll enjoy it in that kind of thing. I think with both movies. What is noticeable that it they didn't give harlequin top billing basically but she carries both movies completely on her shoulders. 'cause people watch suicide squad because of harleys main look in. She was portrayed new trailers everything and people went to birds of prey. Not for the birds of prey but for harley quinn. The fact that they called it the verge of prey and the emancipation of something..

"Nice all right. Billy were onto you. What introduced you. It will definitely be the tim verse. The batman animated series. I watch that forever. And i think that's amongst the best of dc comic representation on the screen anyways. I'm an enormous fan of timbers. I think it's great brevity. With batman and superman all the way through the justice league united. But i think probably what i like about her. And what i find interesting about the timbers thing is a lot of conversation today is how accurate to the comics or the movies that were watching. How true to the characters are out his cannon. Go along and i really liked the idea that the timbers was this creation factoring for characters that became beloved comic characters. But they're not from the comics. I think that's a really cool thing. And then so when you see harlequin come on in suicide squad or birds of prey. Does it have to be exactly the same as everything else has gone before. An important fact. The movies are often doing things that are way more interesting with their characters. And they sort of wind up being shoehorned into in some of the comic book moments which isn't dislike off on comics but that wealth of creative input in the different mediums does add something to the characters so you get to see with the timbers this creation i think a very fun character and then fast forward twenty five years or whatever and then you get to see margot robbie take harlequin from suicide squad. Two birds of prey. And it's just really this amazing transformation of a character. So i guess i'm within yellow in terms of falling in love. I find her very compelling character once you get to the margot robbie era. But i think she's a very fun character always around like i've slept for giant mallet that she carries around and i think it's great that they get to show that in birds of prey to. Yeah i love that giant mallet. I also love the baseball. That iconography to yeah. It's really a wonderful thing when you get to explore that. But i'm also going to speak up for the comics here. Because obviously i love what dini and tim did in terms of everything with the animated series since that was the genesis of harley on the whole but what they did in terms of the comic books with her was really an extension of what they were doing on screen that got a little darker and a little more sadistic in certain ways than it was on screen. And then when carl kessel picks up the run of harley quinn. He has harley in poison ivy. Take up together in this wonderful partnership in the comic books that i really fell in love with and i have to say in terms of my relationship to the harley quinn comic books. It wasn't until karl kessels. Start of harley quinn's adventures where there's even a sequence where harley quinn goes to hell and there's all kinds of amazing things that happen. That's what i really started to fall in love with what this character was in a larger sense and so now i feel like there are so many different people doing so many different things ravi already mentioned har- lean. We've also had the young adult novel breaking glass which is fantastic..

"As as teeny kid. I was properly six years old or something like that to harlequin and in the full soup with the red and the black little bells and everything like the whole old school suit that we know and love and i loved it. She had a full gesture suit and the way she talked with. So peculiar to me especially. Because i'm from europe so american accents and different american accents can be very interesting and she had just such a way of saying like hey putin and this how she said putin every time to the joker just caught me. I just fell in love and they've never fallen out of love with her couldn't in each iteration that has followed since them. Yeah so that's my intro to harlequin the that men animated series cool so you started out with the very very beginning of the character yes it was first originated. Yeah yeah. I didn't even know that she wasn't part of the comic books. Back then for me was just like oh. She's always been there when i got older and got into comics and got more background information. I understood that she wasn't even part of the comics. They wrote her into the series and then later created background and added her into comic universes wall. So that was amazing to murals. Like oh is there for a little bit of history but yeah no it started for me with the animated series especially because back then. I didn't have any access to comex at that age here in the netherlands. It's pretty hard to get comics. In general you have to go to a specialty shop. At least if you wanna get american comics. Manga and stuff are easier to get in european comics or strips as we call them. Those are easier to get but american comics. You really had to go to the specialty shops so that was hard. Get by so yeah. The animated series was. We'll do this on tv every week. All right so up next. I would like danielle to tell me how she. I fell in love with harley quinn as a character well i think the two different questions that howard was. I i introduced. Her was also in an animated show and it was the version. Raviol- was talking about where she's in the full harlequin costume and hangs on jokers every word and she never made an impression. As that for me. I was just like this portrayal of women but when the first harlequin movie came out with margot robbie think that would be suicide squad and they portrayed her as a totally different character where she was a standing on her own and had her own ideas and was going to become this villain in her own right. That's when i fell in love with her very cool and you really particularly loved that representation of her i did. I loved that reservation for the idea that she could be powerful and intimidating. That was a big deal from her. Most of my life people have told me in not a flattering way that i was too intimidating and so to see this female character represented as both a sex symbol and intimidating. Was really something that drew me in. It was like oh this is great. And the way that she uses the men around her uses their attention to draw them in just to that she can kick their ass. I those fantastic. And i loved everything about the way that they designed her costume getting rid of the harlequin look and going for just totally different image with the red and the blue pig tails and ball the facial tattoos and all that kind of stuff. I was just like yes. This is my villain nice..

"A Boston news anchor named Joe Pinto was fired by the station she works for W.. H.. T. H. T. V. for making a cameo Adam sandlers horror comedy Huby Halloween. Halloween haven't seen it. I don't really know. Yes. So looks terrible. So she lost her job. Says because she mistakenly violated her contract by saying Oh. Yeah. I'll be the news anchor for a small part in this movie. Welcome back you're watching her parents in the movie and it's October thirty first, which is a special day across the country. Boston news anchor claims she was fired after appearing in Adam Sandler’s ‘Hubie Halloween’ film

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is self-explanatory
"Suicide Squad kill the justice. League is about the suicide squad trying to kill the Justice League. The other big video game news from D., C. Fan Dome was learning a lot more about suicide squad kill the Justice League from rock steady games the developer of Arkham asylum city night. Suicide Squad kill the Justice League is officially its title and game is about the suicide squad trying to kill the Justice League the trailer for the game opened up on a decimated metropolis. There was a weird glowing giant purple skull ship in the distance and it cuts to Harley Quinn on a rooftop goofing off and making jokes in response to just the General Radio Chatter. Then the rest of the suicide squad was revealed along with Harley Quinn. This game will also feature Captain Boomerang with a pretty intense Australian. Dead Shot and King Shark they had some comedic banter making fun of dead shot for claiming he never misses well King Shark absent mindedly popped green lantern and Batman balloons, which is interesting to me because there have been side quests about popping balloons in the past arkham games. And then Amanda Waller came on the line telling them they had to get to work or she would blow them up. Was All pre rendered but the next part of the trailer gave a pretty good idea of what to expect in terms of Gameplay Harley Quinn zipped around using some kind of Hook Shot zip-line thing and used her bat mainly to attack these weird purple enemies. King Shark looked slow but carried a big machine gun dead shot had a jet pack did a lot of shooting and Captain Boomerang had some kind of quick teleporting ability while he was also throwing boomerangs and other weapons. And all of this happened while outkast's B O b bombs over Baghdad played on top of it. After finishing off the group, they quipped that what they did probably will knock a few years off the sentence and then Harley remembered that there was an Alpha target they needed to pursue. And that's when Superman showed up with his classic Yellow Belt and red. Underwear look. At first, it seemed like he saved a helicopter pilot from a crash, but then his eyes start glowing purple and he killed the pilot prompting these suicide squad to realize they are meant to kill the Justice League, the trailer ended with. Superman. Not really reacting to getting hit in the head with some kind of pipe that guess King Shark through and it revealed a twenty twenty to release window for playstation five. Series. Exit PC. After that trailer host will Arnett revealed a few more details about the game with the voice cast from suicide squad who were in character Harley. Quinn specifically referenced getting excited about killing Batman and Captain Boomerang mentioned the flash. After that game director Sefton Hill showed up. There was this whole silly conceit that will Arnett was being transported around to his hosting duties and Hill had joked that they had just shipped him a green screen which was pretty good joke but he answered a few more questions. The game does play S- in the chronology. So it is technically a sequel to Batman Arkham night it's going to be a lot different, but narrative is moving the plot forward. They decided to do a suicide squad game because they consider their games character-driven and the suicide squad highlights. One of the things DC has always been particularly good at villains they appreciated how flawed they were. It also gave them the opportunity to create an interesting impossible scenario, which is, of course, hunting down the Justice League. The gameplay will be a hybrid of hero empowerment action and Gunplay, which is definitely a unique for rock steady Batman does not use guns. The game will offer up to four player Co op, but will totally be playable single player. If you're playing alone, the AI will handle your other members and you will apparently be able to swap between them seamlessly. You can also go back and forth between single and multiplayer over the course of game it is also an open world. That world being metropolis. The twenty twenty to release window really surprised me. Batman Arkham night released in two thousand fifteen they lent it a lot of support post release but I think it's pretty safe to assume they have been working on it at some capacity since that game released since arkham night released. A suicide squad game was also teased as early as two thousand thirteen where there was something at the end of Batman Arkham origins. So to learn it is nearly two years away. Surprised me. I'm not really disappointed. Honestly, I'm happy to wait just surprised I would have assumed it would be
Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn
"The real question though Rachel is were you familiar with the birds of prey and these characters prior to the film. So I knew I've done a lot more of like the Marvel Mc you blah blah blah. But I knew a lot of the DC characters from the animated series like Justice League and Justice League unlimited and teen titans and like the the original Batman animated series. So I knew a lot of these characters but not in the context of birds of prey. yeah very cool my myself Black Canary I learned about a lot from the justice video gains from the CW show Arrow. Which I it's honestly it's not my favorite. Wdc Show but at the same time boy it started at all and I do love. It is your favorite. My favorite is honestly the flash the FLASHER supergirl. I've heard those are the two. Warren really likes them. I forget to watch the. I've heard really good things. Yeah no the flash. It's tough because if you're not the person that like 'cause Arrow has it's weird funky shit to but like if you're not a fan of the weird and has like weird you might not like the Flash. I love it and honestly yogurt. Sawn has become one of the greatest villains of ANY SUPERHERO BASED MEDIA. I've seen And also his name is. Yo- barred thon boy. Do I love. It really is a good name so we please So one of the things that like what just to start off one of the things I loved about birds of Prey. That is put me off a lot of. Dc stuff is that. I don't love when shows have people that are all attractive in the same sort of way yeah I know where everyone's like a polished millennial or polished older person or Polish like teenager Here's a guy with short hair named Chris. Yeah again you know. Here are all these rails in model tall women. Here's you know all these instagram models doing a show. It's like it doesn't. There's something about it that always takes me out of it a little bit and one of the things. I loved about birds of prey. That will get more into. Is that Everyone was such sessia unique character like they very much came from their own styles. Their own half. They weren't having to in a world together because they were a world together. Yeah so let me ask you this. Can you sum up the story of the movie since we're talking about a little bit in a lot of the ideas of what we love about it How would you sum up the movie? Go Rachel Go. Yeah so high summit up is on the movie starts where a Harley Quinn and joker just broken up. And she's narrating delightfully sort of like how they got together. How the relationship was going sort of all the benefits. She got from being in a relationship with him and now she's the process of grieving that relationship and sort of the the steps. She's taking like when she won't admit to it when she's just sad about it and when she starts to like do something and like work through it And in that process it sort of opens up this This space for a new Super Villain to start to take hold of the city and when that happens it starts to bring all these other characters a cop down on their luck of secret character that is revealed later in the story and even like the the evil guys Driver come into play to handle all these things. It's actually beautiful. A how like all these people get woven into the same
‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Dominates Box Office With Mighty $57 Million Debut
"When the first trailer for sonic the hedgehog was released months ago it was trashed on social media but it's Paramount Pictures getting the last laugh now because the movie made its debut at the top of the box office list taking in fifty seven million in its first weekend also the highest opening weekend for a movie adapted from a video game finishing second over the weekend was Harley Quinn birds
'Birds of Prey' Review: Nihilism for Fun and Profit
"Movie reviews let's jump right into it Eric how you doing okay all right Steve how are you good all right so we can see prepare children we got the movie reviews here which we do every Sunday we'll talk box office as well we'll catch up when I was off last week for the Academy Awards but Steve you did see birds of prey the Harley Quinn thing yes hi would you think well I mean it this is a film that once very desperately for us to believe that it's a G. and twisted in the NBA wanted so much to kind of forget to actually be edgy and twisted it keeps telling us how it deals with the the the and that's not to say that the the latest DC comics movie century isn't doesn't have its moments but certainly Margot Robbie's is was among the highlights of this sort of a spin off of suicide squad and she was certainly one of the highlights of that film but it is fun at times I I I like I can honestly say I can't think of a movie I've seen more recently they are seen so many people work so hard to convince me they're having a good time and yet the it's sort of extraordinarily conventional at the same time unlike unlike suicide squad which is sort of put together by a government agency the birds of prey kind of come together more naturally joker isn't actually in the sermon and by the way I should make it clear we're talking at the joker not the current dot that most recent joker iteration but the jerit letto joker from a couple years ago but he's not in this it doesn't matter but that doesn't stop the screenwriter who Christine at Hudson who did bumble bee which is actually a pretty good script from from sort of leaning into his influence on this whole story when were re introduced a Harley Quinn she and and joke or have just broken up which apparently means that any protection that she has being affiliated with him is gone so suddenly all the criminals in Gotham when the killer and I'm not exactly sure why but she has done some horrible things in the past I guess one of the people she has wronged is there is a crime boss this play by you and McGregor who goes by the name black mask something of sort of a flashy party boy E. but he kind of seems to have one speed in one elevated volume when he speaks he basically like rip Taylor in a black skull mask so he's more obnoxious than threatening the the hit the side kick that's played by Christmas Cena whose actually way more sort of deviant sinister and then black mass gives but we don't really get to see him that much but the the what happens is that they these these email characters all kind of come together some of them are more superhero oriented like a crossbow wielding huntress is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and then there's care during black Canary's played by journey small at bell and there's a young girl name Cass who's play ballads a Bosko is a police detective Renee mon twenty it was played by Rosie Perez and I gotta say of all of all the of all those characters Winstead in parens really kind of stand out I guess not surprisingly and it's it's actually kind of really great just to be reminded how much of a presence Rosie Perez can be and that when given the chance and given this kind of exposure and and sort of elevated in this way there is a far more interesting aspects of birds of prey than just the action of the actions not bad there's sort of a subtext about what happens to people when they sustain prolonged abuse or other forms of violence most of lead characters are suffering from some form of PTSD or another in the sort of find unique ways to cope with that it's a it's a shared condition that brings these women together and bonds them and makes them not only surprisingly strong as a team but but it's also sort of a new weird little group therapy thing the film doesn't address this directly but it's sort of hard not to hard to miss it like get a you know a like most things in birds of prey it's not exactly subtle but anyway the the I guess of the action sequences are kind of a mixed bag of sort of standard issue cases in explosions in fighting and with a few sort of clever original and and a little bit bloody idea sort of sprinkled in but a few case you're in curious birds of prey is actually yes very rated R. the some there's some gory violence there's some liberal usage of four letter words but I'm guessing the under age folks who will be speaking into this movie will not be traumatized by anything that they see it's got a great Sir high energy soundtrack to really bombastic score by Daniel Pembleton and and enough sort of deviance from Robbie and company to the keep it interesting mobile when the problem with the film is the bad guy even the Gregory is terrible in this he looks like he's having a good time but you know the thing I hate more than anything else in the world in movies is watching someone have fun yeah because it does not this I don't know I don't know what someone on a roller coaster I want to get on the roller coaster like so that's sort of the problem here and okay when DC finally figures out their bad guy problem they're gonna probably for anyway but that to me it's a mixed review but but that's about I got a I don't know if it's positive or negative all

"harley quinn" Discussed on Krypton Report: The Supergirl Podcast
"And we know that there was a scene that was filmed for this movie that figures featured some sort of representation of that Juncker characters parley getting kicked out and it's out there somewhere. Maybe we'll see extended edition the awesome a deleted scene extend addition or something like that I mean they do. It is the same. It's the same Harley so it's the same joker from suicide squad. They were going to use his footage from suicide squad but they decided against actually putting him in the film You do see a version of the joker from behind and it has the same style. Same hair slicked back and everything But it's just really quick. Some people are even speculating that the animation at the beginning because the animation of parley and the joker are more classic Comic Book. They're like oh they're already doing away with jared leto joker by making this this comic Book Accurate. Looking Joker in this animation. While it's like there was not that. Co Margot Robbie never portrayed that comic book accurate Harley Quinn except for that one shot that mirrored the Alex Ross Tuxedo joker and Harley Quinn. Like that's it so you know. Margot Robbie personified that version of Harley Quinn either so like it was a stylized animation just to you know just to give you the lowdown on her character Really fast from literally conception to the time she became Harley Quinn her to once you talked about this earlier like she's telling the story she's narrating all of this so it's almost kind of like we're looking inside of her head like she sees it as a cartoon animation..

I'll say for countries I just her awkwardness but bad asam But also we all have Mary. Elizabeth winstead too. So yeah. It didn't come out on audio. Some everyone everyone compresses in anyways. Leave it in so other than Harley Quinn. Yeah isn't hardly grandma. Harley Quinn Favorite character because she is my favorite writer on. Are we not supposed to win. No he just said hundreds and I don't know if that was supposed to be because has no I mean who's your second favorite. Okay then. Yeah Harley Quinn would be my favorite and then hunters staying away from favorite huntress shred our favorite harlequins second Mask My would be hardly granted lackner I'm saying actually don't change me. No don't go changing on me. It was hard it was because he was black maskell. Yeah it's there was such a great duet that they had even the number you and just is He's just amazing. It was such you can tell he was having fun with which was awesome really everybody watching their performances. It was really it this one. Actually we is something. I forget what we watched recently where it was hard to pick a character because everybody's performance was yeah wasn't easy either. I loved everyone in this movie. Like it wasn't it wasn't like both of those. A long shot near those just happened to me my favorite. I like everyone in this movie and like shut up to Rosie Pres- I she's great in everything. You know what happened. The white men can't jump is one of my favorite comedies. You don't happens her who she turns into the question. Oh Nice so everyone. Home listening The question is Originally Vic sage who is a guy with like a duster actually who works was based on watchmen He's got a blue hat blue duster and his face is blank and he could re like remain commingle his face to look like anyone's on but Well Renee Montoya is like one of the highest like detectives and GDP and just how the movie said like she drinker way until like failure And then she ends up getting like taken under the wing by Vic sage and he says go train under Richard Dragon. Richard Dragon is known by the League of Shadows. by Sheva as well as Kane Kane who's an assassin And he's like the guy who's like if you go through me and then you're ready to join the League of Sassoon's And she and he does happen APPA than she liked it a lot of cool shit where I'm like. Oh like I. It's it's interesting. I'd say like the way that the the during everyone's origins like Yeah Helena Bertinelli origins pretty high attacks by canaries. Unless you WanNa talk about multi verse. It's never going to be in taxes. Yes I do. You know what happens. CASSANDRA CAIN RIGHT IT senator. Kaine Cassandra candy comes comes back girl. Why so so? CASSANDRA CAIN in the comics. So lead shadows There're there's a lady Shiva and David Cain who end up having a child. And you're like we're good amrried the best. So driver becomes CASSANDRA. CAIN and she actually doesn't learn how to speak and her first language is to read her opponents Like techniques and shit right so like she is she ends up growing up Kinda Mute Mute and she has a broken English And then she actually goes on first assignment. David Cain and David Cain takes her into like we're going to go kill this Guy Blah Blah and she thinks it's a game and then she finally kills him she's like Oh oh my God. My Dad's a bad guy and she leaves and this and actually all. The birds appraised like origins really kind of our surround around like in Gotham. There's a moment where there's a giant earthquake and they they call it no-man's-land And then like all. The police laughed. Everyone left only Batman and a few police stayed to like try to maintain peace. CASSANDRA CAIN was one of the few. And Oracle Robert Gordon monitoring finishing speak and then brought her under her wing then later on like like introduced Bruce backrow. Because she's like I used to be back her whole for since so you don't have you don't speak we're gonNA cover your mouth. So she's the one with the stitches on her mouth Gotcha and then currently now for her origins a little bit recon where she's now called orphan. Um and it's it's it's really cool study. I saw a black mass. Have the knife to renege on. Like is he going to cut it and then she's GonNa become you and what that's where. I was like soon to violin. No I was like I don't know if I like the imagery or the ideology of a man taking voice from a woman in this year. Yeah Yeah I will say this also find out. Why.

"What what. which animated I liked? Are we talking about the Orion the way for Harvey earlier that that was my particular favorite but I feel like that was in one of the assault on pre. Was it a Arkham assault on Arkham mm-hmm that they showed that which was which one was that in. Because I feel like I've been in a few things I think was the one that was approached in mad love. I believe leaves. Oh I think it's when Harley for shows up that origin of his jokers favor favorite season one three. He was a Dean Tim. I think were the creators of One of them was friends with the lady. That actually inspired Harley Quinn Arleen Sorkin from days of our lives and I looked into that. Apparently more like adjusters southbound down Internet episode. It was a dream like state that she was going to save princess e Lou and then she ended up doing the voice on that series. It's so cool because the original origin isn't the same as what we just talked about with her being super intelligent and a doctor that that kind of was. Yeah so I think eventually grew to want to give her that. Depth of having the the mannequin. Nick and then the The needy nece that she had and then the depravity that she would show with with like now having a problem killing people like that just is went naturally with the evolution of the joker himself to start to try to show the Kinda influence that because this is the guy that didn't doesn't have money. He's not Batman he doesn't have millions and Gillian's exactly to pay people or gizmos and gadgets and all the stuff he's gotTa Kinda cobbled together so it's gotta be very influential somehow. So what better way to do that than to have his little his gun mall his little sidekick will that and that also leads with joker gets captured neath stone arkham asylum How would he naturally meet someone new? Oh what's doctor or another inmate and a doctor makes it much more easy. 'cause then it's leads to a way for him to break out your jokers going to be like Oh. We met at Church childhood friend. Not The meet Cute Harley but at the same time the joker can use a meet my doctor and it's like Oh wait I'm GonNa let you think you're getting enemy but really I'm just I'm just digging girl like he totally you totally just reverse I. Students Joker like nineties are in be leaning. Was It us you know but seriously like the right because somebody can play with up through you know mentally play with somebody because he totally gives no Fox about who he damages. WHO also? That's that's joker being like. Oh here's here's a fun game. Let me see how much I can fuck up this person. That has their shit together. Yeah yeah this is to prove to himself that he's mastermind at manipulation is to take this. This person that's Keith. Sees Little Little crack and just keeps picking at it and picking at it and picking out until the law falls apart but it's funny because she's actually tucked away in her own issues her own problems and he doesn't see that so her crazy comes out later on and where she actually tries to kill him. How many times so I don't think he doesn't like her actual crazy? No not a fan of actual also crazy is more dangerous than his crazy knowledged time. That's the right relationships male or female that everybody's been in that relationship where you're like. Okay you got some Weirdo cool and then down the road. You're like oh no GEICO break aboard if you're like okay. This isn't a video podcast but we'll we'll do the tally. After I had pulled on him and relationship in ninety four. I mean I worked in kitchens a lot of knives that was like an opening. Call all exact. That was like a week. A wake-up was like okay. I'm GonNa look for everything that you were about and if I see that new car yeah Oh aw damn never never the TRIFECTA. But I hope that's not a try to the people like Yep that's the thing Naipaul's abuse is the knife gun car. That's the O- Rochambeau Russia. That's not a go dark road relationship Rochambeau. ooh It's clear that it was a two way street in that Harley was trying to deal with her own issues and seeing somebody that wasn't and was happy about now dealing with the issues. That was the avenue that joker didn't even fully realize like you're saying saying that he was taking with her that she was like. Oh cool I can be this and not have to worry about holding everything back so and then then you get Harley Quinn Cajole bore Harlequin and that's where that relationship that toxic relationship I think develops from his NBA. Like Oh shit. This is just a fun. Game for me but I think he realizes sooner than she does that. This went really bad real quick because he tries to kill her. I think that's a lot of the reason to why he probably did. A lot of that was to push that away. It's like wait a minute kind of getting close to this person. I'm GonNa shut you out of a window. Yeah I'm GonNa Stab you now. I'm going to you know whatever whatever shooter he's done he's done after the first time he realized that I think he also made a mental note. That like I'm only going to get close to her to have we do what I want. And then I'm just GonNa side yeah once. I've used her killer again but it wasn't because he was closer because like I just I need it for this thing killer person. They do this then. It doesn't work. I can use it again for this. So try to kill her again after that and on and on and on just keeps. She's been used a well. She's not useful anymore actually gets pissed off that she catches Batman. And she's like you're gonNA BRING ME AND MR J back together and MR J gets there and is best west at her. I saw something really funny. Where they liken Batman to Dr Phil and the Harley job a relationship with some kind of I want that Melito and I was like Oh my God? What a thing? The man who has serious daddy. Mommy issues and dresses like a bad is going to be the rain. The reigning any person here for eight Suhail is healthy. Do know that Dude looks spray. Tan House doesn't look like a guy that is sitting in the dark in his living room in his underwear ugly sobbing loudly. Britney Spears to see him as like how deep is your I love playing. BG's Beatty Teaching. You'll be knocking them. BG's live that's him trying to Jesus itself Mimic the joker seen in the beginning where he's like making him smile bristling the mustache. Dr Phil is the joke. The T shirt. Oh Dude. Oh Yes oh I might have to work on that. Oh God that is a good spot not for us to take our break. Guys can listen to stuff going on and we can really marinade and this whole Dr Phil dressed as the joker so uh yes to Britney Spears of. BG's either okay. Birds of Prey Changes Title At Movie Theaters In An Effort To Boost Ticket Sales
"Let's see several cedar the theater chains have changed the name of birds of prey and the fan tabula Samantha patient of one Harley Quinn two Harley Quinn birds of prey on their websites because they're hoping they're putting putting the name Harley Quinn in front and center will improve business on this movie yeah I don't know if that's going to work I don't know either I investigated what it's made so far so in its opening weekend here only made thirty three million the budget it looks like was eighty four point five
'Birds of Prey' Gets Rebranded With New Title
"This but is kind of a weird story going on about the Harley Quinn movie cell in case you don't know it came out last these called birds of prey and it actually name is birds of prey and the methane tabular emancipation of Harley Quinn or something like that that's the full title whom we sell but it's called birds of prey in on the movie marquees it's listed as birds of prey so it only made thirty three million in its opening week it was supposed to make over fifty and the retail movie chains say the reason it's not making money is because when people try by the marquis they don't realize it's the Harley Quinn movie so they are re titling it Harley Quinn right so that when people see the

"Those numbers will climb by the time this episode airs. I have a feeling it's going to be more than that I have. I have faith. Alright so where do you what do you. What do you think we go from here? I I remember when Leo when we talked about it last week league. We're just talking about the trailer and stuff and the first reactions and Leo's like I don't like I don't like this because Harley in the birds of prey you you know. They don't have any affiliation. I think the fact that they don't join together to the end and the fact that at the end of the movie she just takes off Harley takes and separate and like John mentioned before like a you kind of kick off two franchises that way. I think that's such a smart move and I think the those that are that love the comics and really don't like when things are changed probably will dig the fact that okay cool like they went their separate ways. You're not going to be like a giant team now for the rest of the DC use existence. So yeah what do you think it'd go from here. I feel like with Harlequin. I think I WANNA see next is a Harley Clinton Ivy movie like David Your. I'm not sure I'm episodes urine into it now. But you'll see the relationship. They do really well in the Harley Quinn on The DC network but I will let see a really good like almost like a buddy a cop movie between the two of them more more explaining her relationship with joke or more harlequins pass and just a straight and then on the other side of it a straight up Birds of prey movie. I'm always be down to see that Jen so I definitely feel like despite how much money see. This week's Margot Robbie has occurred as much to carry Harley and Zoe feel like there's GonNa be another film And then I mean if we're also also alluding to the post and credit seen that they sort of set up or try to tease to us. I feel like we're going to see her. At least I mean do we know L.. How long she has a contract to be Harley? Did she sign anything. That was like five movies or something. She's a producer now so dope. You probably stay. Yeah so she might have still who knows. She might show in the Batman Earth but a lot has changed in suicide squad. She's now two time time Oscar nominee and she does a lot of serious stuff now. So who knows but I think we'll get another one. I actually want a movie with her. And Joker as has against each other as jokers villain and she is the protagonist. I would like to see that to see and not Joaquin's joker broker obviously can't be locked. Would you wanNA bring jared Leto back or do you just recast. I would give him another shot if a favor completely redo his look like if he comes back completely different I give him a shot. I'm not one of those. That hated him. I more indifferent with him than any others I think he I think he catches a bad rap because of what he's in between if you really look at it. He's in between ledger he's in the best performances ever. So that's true that's tough you know so I'd give him another. There's shot but I wouldn't you know I can't. I can't see that damage to on that Ford ever again. Because that's not gonNA work and in in terms of the Batman. I don't think she'll be in the Batman. I think that Batman movie is going to try to separate itself from everything as like joker did. That's what I personally think but yeah birds of prey now. Oh and in regards to the birds of prey depending on the box office does we may get under the Louis but when it shocked me forget like a non Netflix of me like a DC universe series with them. Now where do you rank it now. That's that's where I'm going next so I said to Generale. I'm like all right so this should take about three minutes or everybody. Let's rank okay. Let's rank with the entire. DC You all eight movies so I'll give you my rankings and if you guys have anything different than you guys shout are are yours so in last place for me I have suicide squad. Does anyone have something different. Yes Yup all right. What's your worst man of steel steal? Same Wow so. There's a lot of damage that movie. I'm sorry but like we said thousand times a mini mini. They don't you don't Save Your Dad you lose me everything else just doesn't matter you're my number. Seven is man of steel. So I guess you're number seven to Ryan Genesis suicide squad. BCS PVs today. Oh No why it disagree with you guys. They're my number. Six Is Justice League thing Ding. Ding Dang yeah no just like same and then my number five is I cheated here. I will say the director's Cut Batman v Superman as is my number five but suicide squad. I actually put suicide squad number five as well have you. I've seen their recently. Yeah actually very recently it on last week I did too. I was like last week Monday. So I I was blinded by. How Great Harley was that? I thought the movie was good. Boy was I wrong movies. Not Not good at all. They're the beginning is fine once they get out of the prison in the actual movie kicks in. I mean everything will hardly will. Smith is gray. That's it and everything. Yeah and Kevin boomerangs fine. Everything is the villain isn't great. It's the trash are eighty so my number four. Have you guys haven't eating different. They're really I'll write my number. Three is birds of prey. Do you have anything different. Than what are you know saying. Same okay cool. Cool my number two issues Zam. Do you have anything different there. Okay and number one the best. DC You movie is wonder woman color. Let me share. And No. It's not because she's a woman it's because some long one of the most well done in one of the best origin stories of comic books hero and I love that too out of these eight movies directed by a women but the ending of wonder woman stink. Just WanNa put that out now that is a swirling pilot trash everywhere. I re watched it Last October yeah actually watched the whole D. C. you in preparation for joke. I don't know why because it's connected but but yeah. The ending of that movie's just doesn't work it. Because it's so good up to that point unit really extra. CGI You could've just kicked ass without Outta no-man's-land has minimal CGI fucking kicks ass so it really didn't needed I worry about the CGI eighty four. I think the movies and it'd be good. I just wonder wonder if they're going to pull back on the CGI. I know Gal has said that she did a lot more work in this one. As opposed to the first one. So I'm curious yeah so that's our. DC rankings. That's our quick review of birds of prey and the fantabulous fantabulous emancipation of Harlequin. Next week we will be back to break down the Academy Awards and to break that our top ten performances inches of all time. I was actually really looking forward to this and so everyone got sick over here to to tease. I think that we're GONNA argue a lot next week. I'm sure I sense a lot of arguments. I have no women on my list and and that may upset another person on here. You know women for like a best performance at all. Yeah I she I have two women at eleven and twelve could do a lot of honorable mentions so I've to women and let me guess. All the other men are white men in those performances. Let me see yes. We're looking at my thighs. I am I am. I may have to cheat next week and just do all female performances. Then I gotta represent for the ladies. Do do it the right way. So yeah that pretty much wraps it up for today next week. Jenny will divorce me Ryan. I'll forget very famous. Amos actor's name like that Ryan if you're doing a performance lists you better know that God damn that performing the movie that one time you know so we'll see you next week for the next two dysfunctional episode of Roh chronicles. Yeah next week..
'Birds of Prey' flies low on Oscars weekend with tepid debut
"The birds of prey the full title birds of prey and the fan tabby was emancipation of one Harley Quinn doesn't exactly some of the movie but it sure captures divide this started when the joker and I broke up yet despite its Oscar nominated star Margot Robbie in the eleven Oscar nods for joker the latest DC comics spin off disappointed at the box office opening with an estimated thirty three point three million dollars domestically because having a good time still that was enough to push bad boys for life to second and Best Picture nominee nineteen seventeen to third I'm Ben Tom
DC's Birds Of Prey: Everything You Need To Know
"On the big screen this weekend at DC comics film featuring one of the main characters from suicide squad one Robbie is back as Harley Quinn in the birds of prey what would you say it diamond I can find Sears I know the east and better than anybody this forty film critic Kristin children with his take on birds of prey in the fan tabular cements a patient of one Harley Quinn is part of the DC comics universe which seems to extend and expand as we speak but yeah this stuff isn't connective tissue here but there's no joker even though Margot Robbie's character is pining for him for much of

"Quinn is Harley Quinn's role is to say nothing at a mass no one gives we are beyond that the movie that you directed is about Harley Quinn becoming her own master I feel absolutely and and the sort of trials and tribulations of that because it's not easy and you see her going through all these various stages of grief in our break up montage in everything from bloodying noses during a roller derby I came down to eighty yards at a phase exactly not just Harley but then introducing the birds of prey as well because all of these women go through something and they're all trying to break free from their own chains will one element that's common across all of these characters is that they're all angry right there all angry for different reasons whether they be personal trauma how they're treated in the workplace bad relationships but none of them apologize for their anger and what they do in this movie is that the express their anger with a violent life why do I have to say that watching it on one hand it was a little unsettling to see like all these leave full carnage but on the other hand it was refreshing and sort liberating for me to see women not care about the consequences of their actions what tell me what you think is the value in seeing women express rage the way these women do in this movie yes I mean without sounding too much like a Die Hard bra burning feminists yes I think that women have rage and I would rather have that range be channeled in this heightened fine wild ride of the movie then in other ways but I think we are tapping into that well you know there was something cathartic about watching the movie absolutely I understand that you had an almost all female crew on the set what was it like filming these pretty violent scenes sometimes watching these women just destroy their enemies I think there is this sort of cinematic history of it that you know you want to dis hoon holler when these anti heroes stick it to the system these are bad guys that these women fight and they represent a system that has been pushing these women down a lot of people can relate to that and at the same time it's fine and Harley's hitting a guy with a mallet as you know Canary is kicking a guy on moving floors and so was there ever a moment when you were like a boy we we got a dial that back this is way too violent you know really I think trying to make responsible decisions about it without you know condoning too much with in terms of gun violence especially I also wanted to really keep it mostly hand to hand because you can really do a lot of great action choreography with it and I also want to make sure that these women decide Canary don't really have super powers and so they have to use their physical strength as real women to fight these guys and I love that yeah so you are still pretty early in your directing career and you know then on top of all that there's this talk about you being the first Asian American woman to direct a superhero movie when you first walked on the set did that way on you yes of course I think unfortunately when there are so few yeah it's inevitable that there is self pressure to do the best that you possibly can so that you don't mess it up for anyone else were there things you deliberately did to acknowledge that you are Asian American and Asian American woman is in charge here I think it's more inherent in the decisions that I make and so there was an instinct to just be more diverse with the casting and even among the crew I'm proud to say he had a lot of Asians on sets that deliberate or was a complete coincidence that there were so many so many Asians on this crew I was certainly not like I need this many Asian and fat but it was more like maybe part of it was sharing that space of bean Asian and have it in the industry where it wasn't necessarily a deliberate quota but I think there was this shared sense of otherness that brought us all together I love that I mean we are seeing more and more women directing there and like I just in Hollywood to work with more female directors what do you think are some concrete things that directors can do either male or female directors to make sets more equitable I've been thinking so much about this they're two major things I think one for me is and I've spoken about this with journey so about two who is a real activist in her own way and I think her child was two years old when she shot birds of prey and we just threw around this idea of like well why isn't there a daycare trailer why do we have to put that elsewhere and I think that there isn't much of an institutional support so you don't get something like maternity leave because you either on a project or off the project and if you're gonna have a baby don't get on a project exactly and then another thing that I would love to you know work on Monday is a mentorship program where female directors can shadow other female directors on features because there's just so much to learn about the actual process of making a movie especially a movie of a larger scale that you can't learn anywhere else and on top of that I think I'll just be a great way to start building a network of female director these Campion film is birds of prey and the fan tabula S. emancipation of one Harley Quinn thank you very much for joining us this is a lot of fun thank you so much this.
Christian Siriano brings Margot Robbie character Harley Quinn, 'Birds of Prey' to NYFW
"Harley Quinn and friends are back on the big screen with birds of prey Margot Robbie's comic book villain from suicide squad teams up with a bunch of equally twisted women to wreak havoc on Gotham in the movie guy is on our come on his line because he is stuck flooded out so bring this is the first comic book film of the year what do you think I'll just cut to the chase actually a lot of fun with it this is a like I like great mentioned this is based on a Harley Quinn after the movie suicide squad a lot of people are hoping that this would be better than suicide squad and I would argue that if birds of prey it would you be watching the screen went blank at the two minute mark it would still be better than suicide squad that was one of one of the worst movies comic book movies I've ever seen although Margot Robbie was just stand out that film's I'm glad she got our own movie this is an ultra violent bubble gum girl band superhero flick but its fuel on tons of funk and jazz it's a mess guards to the story to the kind of hops all over the place is not super coherent but the explosive kind of kick **** sixties demented T. but do gooders pretty fun to watch it again Margot Robbie is to stand out in this one Baker plays the filling he's actually fantastic as well but Margot increases that anarchists Corey server character and we actually slows down it don't have to spend some time on the spirit of sisterhood and team work appointing dizziness superhero movie this actually directed by a female to cast is largely female and this weekend it's gonna make all the money is gone but sometimes dumping decline and this is one of those times I give birds of prey as solid be into that kind of stuff comic book clicks I highly

Breaking Down 'Shazam!'
"Finds itself at an interesting inflection point. I would say I thought she was a very fun and entertaining movie, but it did not really feel like anything that had come in the DC universe before. And you kind of explain to me. What should I am is? And what it's trying to do. Sure. I mean, I kind of had the. To do the same thing after watching the movie because like right around the time the post credits scene with a evil Caterpillar happened. I was kinda like I've no idea what any of this stuff is. So thankfully, Mike does have a a piece on the ring dot com. A great website kind of breaking down the kind of Kazan origins. But yeah, he's he was actually originally called captain marvel and like in the movie there was like a wizard named 'schisms who gave him like all these superpowers. But when he sorta got folded into DC comics because marvel had its own captain marvel he then became Zam. But the whole spiel is basically the same thing like the wizards powers you activate it by saying Zam, and then I guess in the big conversion you just become buff, Zachary Levi. Yeah, I didn't even know buff Zachary Levi was going to be a thing that I would ever have to talk about. I can't say when I was watching Chuck ten years ago. That this ever crossed my mind that he would be a superhero, I think Tony Lee. This movie is pretty significantly different from superman vs Batman and the Justice league films and even wonder woman, which I thought was you know, is a very charming and obviously hugely successful movie. But there is a lightness in the tone, and it's not quite as operatic goofy. As was l-. You know, what did you make of the kind of movie that Sam was trying to be yet? No, I thought it was fun at kind of had like almost throwback Amblin entertainment coming of age vibe like something you'd see from like Amblin in like the eighties. But with the caveat that instead of a kid going on venture or something he can just become a superhero. But I thought it was a it was it was kind of an appropriate tone for for the kind of here that this guy is and I kind of like that, you know, a kid like a teenager becoming Kazan like he has like a bit of an aimlessness to him at the beginning. Like, there's not the sort of great power with great with great power comes great responsibility type speech. You just sorta has to learn things on the fly Yemen. One of the first things that the character does after he realizes his powers as he just goes to a convenience store in buys beer and candy. And you know, I it, you know, the movies clearly pitched as sort of what if big, but superhero, and it's very effective in showing us like maybe not with the real world ramifications would be because it's a little bit different in tone in the real world. But some of the like aspirations that you have as an adolescent, and the things that you wish you could do when you were thirteen sham does for the first hour of this movie, and the movie ultimately just becomes a story about like friendship and the way that we act bigger and older than we are. And what we can get away with in that time. And then it does turned into a little bit of a superhero movie. What did you make of the kind of balancing of those tones? Yeah. I mean, I think I did prefer sort of the the first half of the move. In that respect, as you know, there are so many superhero movies out there. And I think for the most part it's sorta gets derivative to when the movie gets the guy discovers his powers, you know, like Peter Parker, like scaling skyscrapers type of thing. But it was fun for Suzanne because it felt very like very genuine response. What if a fourteen year old kids suddenly had powers like, yeah? He would try to buy beer. He would go to script strip club in like beam about the chicken wings because this is a PG thirteen movie. You know, if he's in a world where superman Batman exists, and he doesn't really know. What to do is? You just if he can't find people to save is he just going to he's going to try to make cash and become a YouTube star. It was an interesting approach. But I think like I preferred that half of the movie versus like, the Mark strong shows up with seven CGI deadly sin, archetypes, or whatever. And it's time to punch him a lot. Yeah. I agree. I don't think part was active. It's funny because it feels like a movie like this, which is not exactly a reinvention. But is a is a reconsidering of what these kinds of movies can be still does arrive and its conclusion at the notion that needs to feature a lot of punching and a lot of fighting the bad guy. I'm curious to see if as we grow inside, the D C E U, I guess much like Zam. If they'll ever change the the the approach that they take having kind of the final showdown in the final forty five minutes of the movie that was also one of my struggles. Honestly with wonder woman, which I thought as I said was really clever and well made and then ultimately just turned into Diana fighting a demon monster who was played by David through Lous. What do you make of the decisions that DC is now making to singular is each of their movies? I mean, it's interesting because like, you know, they they did a pretty quick pivot from like fast-tracking their Justice league movie which end up being like relative to the expectations a bit of a bomb for them. Also, it didn't really track critically. But you know, they're kind of like making these films that have this very little interconnectivity like aquaman was only really playing the seeds for Auckland to and I guess a trench spinoff, which I could go on like a twenty minutes handed about the trench about the trend. Can't wait for the trench. And like kind of the same thing with wonder woman sequel in feels that way, which is. To you know, if it does well enough at the box office like affiliates just leading into sham two or maybe like a black atom movie, which is like a sham villain. That's supposed to be played by Dwayne Johnson. If you look at like the C projects that are in the air like a rebooted suicide squad, James Gunn, new bad movie. Perhaps a flash movie there's all these other projects like the one glaring omission is there are no plans to make like a Justice league to and not to say that would never happen again. But clearly like the D C you right now is content. Just kind of throwing stuff out there and seeing what resonates with audiences yet. If you look down there slate, we talked about this a little bit during the release of aquaman, but I was just in add an in Vegas at cinema Khan. And they were very proud of the approach that they were taking telling their stories because the next the next handful of movies. They have is of course, Zam, and you know, they also have joker which is coming in October. Which also feels quite standalone seems to have virtually nothing in common with the movie Lakesha Zam. And then there's also a birds of prey which is. Theon story of sort of five superhero team that will also include Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, and that totally and visually looks completely different from those other two movies. And so they've taken this decision to not just make that flash movie and not just make whatever inevitable green lantern movie. And with the same kind of stormy visualises that that Zack Snyder created, but to just kind of individually each story, which is what a lot of comic books are actually a lot of comic books have separate illustrators. They have separate writers their tones are quite different amazing spider. Man could be quite different from x men and superman could be quite different from, you know, detective comics, and what's going on with that, man. And of course, I guess next year late next year. We'll have the Batman which Matt Reeves Batman movie. Do you know, your your very closely track the comp films for us is it more interesting to you of all of this the fits together or do you like it better? If it stands alone and the movies get to be what they are. Well, I. Kind of like maybe I just have a bit of a marble fatigue. Just because it feels like we've been preparing for endgame like just just forever. But yeah, I kind of like this approach because you know, like, if something doesn't, you know resonate with with audiences like I personally wasn't as big of a fan as as wonder woman as other people were which is fine. You know, I I like parts of it. But, but you know, for the most part people really enjoyed it. And I think you know, it's an interesting approach. I think what will probably be most interesting is with wonder woman command and Zam they've all been pretty well received. And they've made a good amount of money. I'm curious what happens like how the DC EU responds when something flops with critics audiences in the box office. Do they like shake it off? Or if it's like, if it's bracing a certain tone, like, you know, let's say joker is actually quite terrible. And and you know, it's like a Scorsese prestige that. Just kind of doesn't work like will the DC you kinda void being that experimental. Again. I I'm curious to see what happens when there's kind of like a speed bump on the road for them. I am too is an interesting question because it does seem like in with Shas AM and most likely joker and handful of these other movies. They don't come with that two hundred and fifty million dollar production price tag. You know, they're definitely smaller movies with more modest ambitions, at least in terms of the execution of the movie. And so the risk is lower. So if let's say joker is not the sort of world-beating, cultural colossus that many would have us believe this week. That's okay. I think that they could probably survive that. And it's an you're right. It is a really interesting pivot away from all of that interconnectiveness. Is there anything else about his that you you really liked and you responded to? Yeah. I really like that, you know, I thought Zachary Levi was was just so good at like kind of capturing basically like, you know, a kid in a swollen dealt spot ended it so well like there were times where you almost felt to childlike for guy who's still like fourteen years old, but you could tell he was just having such a blast. And and yeah, I would have never expected Chuck would be like a swollen superhero. But I never expected Jim from the office to like, you know, make some hard movie also become buffer like Michael bay film. So I I guess, you know sick. I'm stars. They can transform. Yeah. Could you cast a sitcom debauche sitcom figure into into a superhero movie right now is there? Anybody springs to your mind? Is Jim Parsons our next. Green lantern. You think? Oh god. No, no. I'm trying to think of like if someone from parks and rec ado that transformation that isn't Chris Pratt. Because I mean, he's he's just forget about this point. He's he's like a discount printing. Frazier. But he he has done that as well. I mean, I guess maybe if if Adam Scott were cast as as galactic that would probably that. That's as close as we're gonna get

"The good news is I want you to be back real great. Because anytime I look at a script and see background my heart's like so happy the bad has can't be Harley. I said why? And she said because I want back girl to live in Harley land, I want bat girl, hyper and crazy. And you know, she has no attention span. And she's all over the place that I'm just worried it's going. To be too close to Harley, and as you know, I had to kind of say I understand. But because I've played so many rations of Harley said do me favor bring me in and we'll do back girl. And then let me do five or six different Harleys beside it and see if we can still pull it off. And so we do the back row we set her voice, which is higher than any backer life done 'cause she's crazy crazy town. And then we start playing around with Harley, and I sort of had this inspiration to make her a little Brittany Murphy ish, and like that kind of clicked in to her. And so they heard that and they're like, okay. No more. We're done your and so to play them both back to back and yet another version of Harley was so fun. So check that show out to in. It's totally different than fun. That sounds so fun and exciting. "Iheartradio app or wherever you find your podcasts. And we're back in before we move on to current Harley. I just wanted to touch on for those of you that kind of thinking of where to start with her obviously the animated series, which was saying still holds up so beautifully. I feel like you could honestly freeze frame any part of that show and like make it a poster it's so pretty but another thing is her. She also appears Harley appears in the nineteen Ninety-four graphic novel. The Batman adventures mad love in that recounts, a lot of her origin story and also her, you know, her love with joker that relationship. You can see all of that in mad love. I actually just bought it. I'm really excited to podcasts of people talking about it. And it sounds amazing. So pick that up and yes, so now we have a heartily in suicide squad. She also is going to be in birds of prey my fans went ape when they found out. I wasn't playing her on camera. And I'm like, dude, I go on Twitter. I'm like. Margot Robbie is the hottest chick. And and she's a stunningly amazing actress, she's also a lot younger than mean, not valid vigor, but like like, let her shine. And she she's a star. Like, I if I pick her to play Harley like great, I understand that. But I would like Tara Harley Quinn. I I've said a million times, which I think would be really fun. I think they should put me Hemel in Conroy like in a booth at a diner like how you know Stanley doesn't. I think we need a little cameo. I mean, I think so. Oh, that'd be so fans. Go nuts. Yeah. Hopefully, totally I was reading I thought I read somewhere that you vote. You did like a little thing of Harley for aero. Yeah. Okay. So that was like hurt because people didn't really get to see her, right? He's all went nuts because they knew right away with my voice. And I was like you should put me on the show the fans would really like that. But anyway, it was just that one little went off without fun. Everybody, right. Make this happen. Four aero hashtag to the number for like, you know, Harleys a mom, and she has teenage boys or something like mom Harley. Clinger's what does Harley as a mom do like, she's still like likes to dress up and look hot? But then in the morning, she makes oatmeal like pain. Maybe she kicks ass at night. But during the day, she goes to PTA. Gosh, that would make a lot of sense. That would be such a clear run highly, you know, at home. She's like everyone have the breakfast, then she's like. Kick. Some maybe you know, there's too. I don't know you guys can totally pitch that stealing. Find me in an episode. Let's get cracking. I did want to say into sides. What did did like the fact that Harley was, you know, she still had her hopes and dreams when she was in love with joker. They had that law land sequence of her like with a baby. And I love that fact that like what Tara was saying that she's fully fleshed out. You know, she's not a one dimensional villain. She's a woman that had dreams of her own. She someone that has this love interest. She then like we said moves from a follower to a leader. She is she's a one woman show. Yeah. If he is this where you wanted to do your gush session before you let taraoke. I wanna individually just go down. I'm Debbie and thank you for each individually. Like, you know, been tin already. Yeah. Inspector. What were well? We have two more hours, right? I wanna tell tarot. So we had a Reese Wasser who's a transgender actress in supermodel come on. And she did are my little pony episode. And she was talking about how much your show the new animated show has affected her life. I hear that..

"I love 'cause play families. It's cutest thing ever when they're all in cost you and like the mom was back girl. The daughter was raven. The boy was Ben ten. The other daughter was Harley, and I was with a director friend of mine, and the mom said we take a picture with my daughter. She's dressed as Harley, and I said sure, and like actually, let's do a family photo. And I said, okay, when I'm standing next to raven, and I go do, you know, do you know who I am? And she's like, I know who I am. And I go, okay, whatever. And she's like, yeah. Whatever like, they didn't know. Right. And then my director goes, you know, she voices all of you. Right. But she's our whole family, right? And they're like. Second air like just, but 'cause place so fun. Yeah. I always look I liked seeing when. Daniel Radcliffe was like spider. I think he walked around Spiderman. But since he had a mask on. Nobody knew. Yeah. That's the greatest myself much fun favorite is one year. Blake Blake Anderson for work a Hollick's was he just he wanted to go in and buy stuff, and he just put on a woven green masks. Yeah. And like I was like, but I could still see your hair. But I was like, I only know because I know it's you anyone who's that weird hair fun to just walk around the con in cognitive and be able to go anywhere and do anything as fun. If he was going to say we have to take another break. So that we can take a break and then wrap up with the future of Harley and and. And and you know, it's it's going to be a new segment, I call the gush session, and we'll go there. Founds. Good. We'll get to it. We'll see you after the break. Wait is that you're going to break a wh-? What did you want to do? I don't know just say, hey, so we'll we'll get into the movies. The future of Harley Quinn, oh wrap up, and that whatever we can keep that cheap and all of that. But we'll see y'all after the break. That's great. You know, people say necessity is the mother of invention. But that's not always true. Sometimes the mother of invention is advertising. Yeah. Or pure accident. How about ego maniacal delusion? Absolutely. Or just a desperate longing. To be cool. I'm Robert lamb, and I'm Joe McCormick. We're the host of the science podcasts stuff to blow your mind. "And then over the years white people love her and how she sustained is because she's grown with the times, you know, some characters stay very classic. But she's like grown like people like, wow. Like in some of the games that you see like her becoming her own woman in her own power and kicking ass by herself. And like, I just think it's something people aspire to go. Well, she started out as this meek little, you know, wilting. Flower beside joker. And now she's doing things by herself and kicking ass all on her own. It's like, wow, people like blown away by her power. And she so powerful like you're just drawn to her and everybody sees something in themselves from her nothing people are all psychopaths. But. Definitely see. Well, I've put up with some crab in my life that I shouldn't have. And I still love that guy or whatever it is. That you go she's so devoted, and but also she's so cute, and that's part of it to her design is so cute. It is a reason people 'cause play her people don't always 'cause play TIMMY Turner, if they're not hot really naked cost. Too sexy to me. Let's see I'm gonna look for that. I did want to say this was an interview from Bruce Timm in Vanity Fair in two thousand sixteen he said, we didn't want to give joker girlfriend because it humanizes him. We are really trying to stress how bizarre and creepy. He could be and this is from Paul Dini complex. I was writing the script for the Batman animated series. When I was coming up with an idea for the jokers gang of henchmen. I thought I'd like to put a female character in there. I was going back and forth in my head about what kind of character. She should be. What if she's funny? What if there's a bit of a throwback to the henchmen from Batman in the sixties? What if she gets laughs from the henchman sometimes when the joker doesn't? That's what I really love about her. Is that like you said she moves honestly from being a follower to a leader? Yeah. She went from she appeared in a suicide squad in the new fifty two that was in twenty eleven the new fifty two was when DC came through. And kinda just we did a lot of their lines. And then she ended up in rebirth. Having her own comic Harley Quinn comic. And she's also. Gotham city sirens. And she's like one of the only sustainable comic heroes that didn't start as a comic yet. You know? And now all her comics are huge in the the bigger book. Ones are awesome. I mean, I bought them all. I've read them all yet. But as soon as I did killing joke, I had to buy everything that was like that too. That. Yeah. Yeah. It's so funny about it too. Is a Harley is kind of similar in joker in the sense. That joker was supposed to just be a villain of the week. And somehow he called me out. And then, you know, same thing for Harley she was going to be just this character who popped on. And she just was so amazing that I yeah, there's there's something I think about her that is just so infectious where you just love seeing her. And I think it is just in a way where I find that, you know, joker. Like, he is funny. But he's funny in a creepy way. Like, it's very dark, and you don't really trust his last where Harley seems like she's having fun. You know, you're what you're doing bad. But she's also a train wreck which is always fun to watch. What is that girl? Going to do next. Right. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Terry. I wanted to actually quote, you because we have this in here from that Vanity Fair article where you said feminism is about showing women as fully fleshed out human beings. And that's what Harley is she doesn't make choices that are smart or good for woman, but she gets to make those choices men are allowed to be Upson all kinds of characters and women. Aren't we have to be idolized? She gets to not be good quote. Our producer put that in there. He was like well because he pulled a lot of the research. He was like he texted us yesterday. And was like, wow. A lot of these quotes are from Tara..

"That's how the that's kind of what happened with Harley, you know. And I think that there is some I think she has sympathy for the joker. And then the ba- Batman. Has sympathy for her and watching this like watching her chase after him. Yeah. There definitely seems to be a level of Batman being like, you're you got like there were like few episodes where you see him like the joker doesn't care about you. And she's like shut up. He was a big Malley. You guys get the digital remastered that just came out. Oh, yeah. You mean with the tiny funk? Oh, oh, yeah. It's sitting here in my walls. Yeah. At comecon. They played it on the big screen side by side and that show holds up anyway, it's like film, Noir mutiple, but to watch it re colored it's like, holy crap. It's so beautiful. Yeah. Got it. I mean, I feel like you know, we're talking about origin stores. I think this is a good place to jump in on Harley Quinn. So Harley Quinn her full name is Dr Harley Francis Quincy, well, this V H D. And this is you know, she what's dope is she came from the animated series, but she still had that like nineties level. Like naming where like superhero names, their real name sounds like their nickname. I always bring it up on the podcasts. Black bolts real name is blacker guard bolt again. Really shot for the moon. Edwards 'nigma? Right. Yeah. That's that's the Ridler come on. That's that'd be like, that's the guy. That's gonna be the guy. It sounds like but early Quincy fictional character. Appearing in DC comics was created by Paul dean and Bruce him, and I appeared in Batman the animated series, which makes her so unique, you know, which goes to show just the performance just like, you know, I feel like a lot of times people underestimate or under appreciate except for the fans the over. I was gonna say over appreciate. But he appreciate just enough voice actors and just how dynamic their performance can be because Harley Quinn would not exist without the performance. You know, like if that wasn't a amazing performance in the animated series. It could have just been a character that lived in died with this series. But instead it was so good that because of Arlene. Yeah. Like had she not given that voice all those crazy little quirks and highs and lows and things like catch ear the what was that? Not just another chicks voice. It's really she breathed life into this character that you want to hear more from even though it can be high or irritating. Crazy like I got to work. I want to hear. More. Yeah. Yes. So going off of what you were saying about Arleen. So she was a former star of the soap opera days of our lives and appeared in a dream sequence on that series in which she ward just or costume. So like terrorists saying it was literally based on literally that episode is why they created Harley. Yeah. Yeah. So she starred in an episode titled jokers favor in September of nineteen Ninety-two tear. I wanted to know because she was just supposed to be kind of like a walk on role. If she was just supposed to kind of be like, the sidekick, but not really have what she is. Now, why do you think that people latched onto her and have stayed latched onto her? Yeah. I think that reason has changed over time. And I think initially people were so drawn to her because first of all the fact that joker even has a girlfriend interesting like who would date the joker. And the fact that she's so lovable in so loyal. And also her costumes are always kick ass. No matter what they put her in Harleys. Like, you know, it's the biggest cause play. Like, especially Comecon, but any of them, you know, there's just Harley events like I went to like a Harley panel in the whole room was Harley. Of course, I the prized everyone in 'cause plate, and it was freight, those pictures are awesome. But I think people like I think they were drawn to her initially because of the total package it was her drying. It was it was the writing of her. It was the acting was how she looked and the dynamic between her and joker and how she would go for Batman like what cute little chicks gonna go after Batman Harley. You know, like, I think there was so much that went into this perfect storm to create this kick ass chick..
