"Third season, so we've seen the first 6 episodes. We'll be talking about everything up through that. JC, let me start with you. What do you think? When I started watching Harley Quinn, I immediately loved it. And part of it is kind of as you were hinting at Glenn with the clay face, right? The voice acting generally across the board is phenomenal. It's superb. And of course the idea of Harley Quinn stepping out of the shadow of the Joker and kind of becoming her own leader and her relationship with poison ivy, all of it is amazing. It's great. But I think for me, I couldn't help but see it as Batman the animated series all grown up, which is a very good thing in my mind. For in for folks who aren't familiar, as Glenn mentioned, Batman the animated series is where Harley Quinn was basically introduced, and it was a show that ran from about 92 to 95. And for a lot of late 80s and 90s kids, it was kind of the proper Batman. Like certainly for me, it was like, I feel like I was a little too young, like during that time for the Tim Burton films. And I think that this show, Harley Quinn, really taps into that nostalgia. It kind of replicates the darkness of that show into some degree the animation style. Like you can kind of see similarities between their two face, the way it's animated, they're mister freeze, Joker. But it's also way more adult and it has a lot more depth. So like double entendres and sex jokes are aplenty in the show, but also the human drama is real, right? There's breakups and talk of power dynamics and sexual tension, so it's a lot more complex and I would argue that at its core, this is a show without any heroes or villains in the traditional sense, but rather this is a show with anti heroes and their foils. So like Harley is the main anti hero, and you get to see how she's not at all like Batman. They see the world differently. They approach the world differently, but she's also completely and wholly different from the Joker who she used to be attached to. So I think that it takes what really worked about Batman the animated series and what worked about Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. And it says, what if we use all of this? What if we use this and just other things from the DC Universe to make a story? And I think it does it really well. I'm kind of at the point in my media watching experience where I'm just over superhero anything, which is really sad to me because, you know, like JC, I kind of grew up on these D.C. superhero shows. Like for me, Teen Titans was instrumental. I was a big fan of young justice, which is also on HBO Max these days for the first two seasons. And in high school, I was really into the comics before the new 52 K around and kind of reset everything. But for me, I've always been a D.C. fan over a marvel fan because of the way that they flesh out the women in their series. And kind of the way women are allowed to be heroes and villains, and sometimes neither. And also the way that they let their characters be queer. I mean, Harley is like one of those instrumental queer couples in comics. And, you know, I was willing to give this series a try because I'd heard great things and also because the soft spot I have for the Gotham City siren, which is catwoman, Harley Quinn poison ivy. Oh yeah. And what's great about this show is that this is not a mass market superhero show. And it's all the better for it. It's not interested in holding your hand and introducing these characters to you if you don't know them. It assumes that you know the lore and you're interested in seeing it furthered and I think the character work is so great. I think anybody who knows their DC Comics kind of finds Batman and Joker to be the least interesting people running around Gotham. And so to that end, I'm so thrilled to see all of these D listers like, I think secretly bane is my favorite character. In this show, which is like, what a wild card there in the season, there's this great running joke about a pasta maker. What the hell are you doing here, bane? Very expensive pasta maker for the day. This goes to keep the gift. Yeah, I think I'm just so over superhero shows taking themselves super seriously and I don't want realism from superheroes. I want the silly fight sequences I want powers. I want shenanigans and I think this show is just such a blast because the serious stuff is just like the Gritty mundane details of adult life. Yeah. So this is like a ten out of ten smash for me. That's great to hear. And you said the magic word which is further, which is something with a lot of even comic superhero stuff doesn't really seem interested in doing. I did check this show out first thing early on. Where I think in maybe in the early going, it was still trying to define itself by overcompensating by saying what it isn't. Clearly they wanted you to know it's not for kids. This isn't corny the first minutes of the first episode of season one is this bloodbath on a yacht. That also plays off joker's abuse of Harley for laughs, which, as we've mentioned, it's baked into the character, but yuck. So on the surface, I just thought, okay, this isn't my tempo because I was lumping it in with the cynical nihilistic glib and smarmy school of Deadpool and peacemaker and Suicide Squad, but those properties are lazier. They rely on attitude, which is super. Pretty ridiculous, right? Which is not a joke. It's barely an observation. Here, though, there are solid jokes hard, good, well crafted jokes. And the joke density is often 30 rock level, like in terms of JPM, jokes per minute. It's very difficult to achieve, very difficult to maintain, and before I knew it, I was falling in love with these characters who were depicted in a kind of proprietary, almost artisanal way unique to this series. They're not generic. You couldn't pick any of these characters up and place them anywhere else. They've been crafted to fit this specific version of the DCU, which doesn't feel like any other version of the DCU. Yeah. One of the things that I just respect about the show is that it's not black and white, right? It doesn't insult our intelligence in that way. It assumes that the audience is critical. It assumes that the audience is smart. It holds on to the humanity of all these characters, while also fully embracing the absurdity, right? Of the entire premise behind superheroes. It doesn't immediately assume that the folks with the capes and the folks with the badges are the good guys. And it taps into kind of a real cynicism of our time, right? So because it doesn't fake any reverence for superheroes. Like, for instance, when I watch a marvel movie or something in The CW Arrowverse, you know, you have villains talking about how angry they are and how fueled by rage they are, and still somehow they managed to make it TV PG, and it's like, I'm supposed to believe that you're going to blow up a school bus full of children, and you won't even drop an F bomb. No, I can't stretch my imagination that far. So Harley Quinn, I think liberates its characters to be who they really would be, and I just really appreciate that. Reverence is such a great word because there is a lot of reverence also for the criminal justice system baked into comic books and this show is like supremely anti copaganda. Yeah. Also, to the extent that there are no heroes, I think there are no smart people either. Like everybody's just kind of an idiot. Yep. And that makes it really great. I think especially the way they treat commissioner Gordon as just this washed up self absorbed man. I ate that up, man. Chris maloney, who voices commissioner Gordon, found something. It's a radically different take on the character we've ever seen, but it also hits at the core of who he is in the comics. There is a sadness, a schlubby Ness to him that is just kind of turned up to 11. And Alan Tudyk just pelt this guy with Emmys and awards because he's perfect. I think the choice of Harvey guillen as nightwing, I really like that performance. I would stipulate that it's more a Tim Drake personification than aimed at grace and precipitation, but that's a question for another day, but let's talk about Belle as poison ivy. Oh man. In this last season, especially, she has really leaned into a naturalism with her dialog. But here's a clip where she's talking to Harley and Torah fries who is mister freeze's widow about a plan to go to New Orleans. It's hard to explain. Is he hot? He's like vines. Swamp thing is so powerful. He could, oh, by the way, he could find Frank through the green, like easy. A couple things. That's Rachel dratch as norah fries. This is such a great voice cast. But that moment where she's like, oh, by the way, it's a level of off handedness and casualness that it typifies the series. Again and again, you see it. Yes. Of course, some of your favorite vocal performances. Yeah, I mean, the clay phase is fantastic. Color me shocked. I'm still out here riding for bane who is really like every single scene he's in. I'm like, get me more bane. The great James adomian is doing bane's voice and he's fantastic. As I said, voice acting, you know, across the board is amazing. I feel the same way Serena feels. But about king shark. Ron funches as king shark. He's one of the highlights of the show for me. It's Ron funches, right? So he's like relatable and unassuming and charming. I'm guessing you're the one having trouble finding a nemesis. Well, we put the profile up and we're not getting any bites. Is that a shark choke? If so, it's very funny. Let's go. I feel like king shark is almost a paternal figure to Harley's group in a way, very Linda belcher, I'm all in for whatever you're doing kind of vibe, just like I'm there. I think that's just one example of how all the voice work is just spot on. Yeah. Now, this show is famously off on its own weird corner of the TCU. And Warner Brothers kind of lets it be for the most part. Do you ever think about how this show fits into any other D.C. properties or are you happy with its being its own weird thing? I'm so happy to see it stand on its own. I think we need less interconnected media properties, you know? I don't think this needs a spin off. I don't think it needs to tie back in to anything else. It's doing great on its own because it has its own lane to drive in. I think if you connect that road to a highway, even one is fun as the Harley Quinn highway, you know, I think that's the road to disaster. Yeah, no, I agree. I think one of the things that it does and it does really smartly is that it uses the scraps. It uses actual characters from the DC Universe that are absurd. Maybe they were one offs or a short lived or not main characters and not household names. And Harley quin is like making this stew, making this gumbo, and it's like, you're just throwing that out, you're throwing that character out. No, I can totally use that. So it finds a place for someone like kite man or the Queen of fables or calendar man who's like in some ways a running joke in different things. And it's just like the creators of the show are saying, wait, this character makes no sense? Of course it makes no sense. None of this makes sense. So let's just have some fun. Let's just make a show. Oh, Jesse, that's exactly it. Because look, kite man is ridiculous, isn't the punchline of the joke. Here it's the premise of the joke. You take the trouble of fully imagining a world in which kite man is a thing. You give kite man a personality that reflects that his thing is gliding. And from there, that gives you access to so many different kinds of jokes as opposed to leaving it this power sucks, which isn't even a joke. Anyway, we already mentioned the kind of gray area the show works in Harley Quinn's arc over these three seasons. She's always been an agent of chaos more than malice, even in the comics. But she is taking on an arc now that is closer to the kind of catwoman ally, sometimes ally sometimes anti hero arc. How does that strike you guys? I think I found it interesting the way that her arc is a foil to poison ivy's arc, where the first two seasons poison ivy's very much like I'm not part of the crew. I'm not even really a villain. She's like, I'm just an environmental advocate. If you want to call that villain ring, go right ahead. She's trying to enact one of her first big plans to terraform Gotham. And so it's interesting to me to see the tension built into their relationship from that sense that Harley is moving more towards heroism and I needs moving more towards villain race. So I think I don't really care to see Harley purely in the capital H hero lane. But as their plans intersect and maybe bisect, I found that really compelling territory. And so, you know, I don't mind that Harley's growing some angel wings. The first thing that kind of comes to my mind when you ask that question Glenn is like, that's life, you know? When I think about my own life, you know, there's some moments where I'm like, man, I did that thing. That's not great. You're a bad person for doing that, JC, but then other times I'm like, you know, I'm a real hero. Like today I'm a hero tomorrow I'm a Dylan. That's the way it goes. It makes these characters more than just the sum of their parts. It lets them explore what it means to be human. And on that note, let's speculate on the future of the show. I think it's found its groove and serenity, your point, like hardly an ivy's relationship is at a fascinating point. The show has rapidly become about their relationship. So I want to see more. What do you guys think? Are you fearful? Are you hopeful? I think one of the worst things about Batman and Batman adjacent properties always getting canceled is that the thing I want most about them is the extended bat fam. So now we get nightwing this season. We get batgirl. There's a world in which we get Cassandra Cain, there's a world in which we get huntress. I love all of those B list C list characters, and I want to see more of them. Yeah. I will say that in a sense I'm optimistic because of what we've said of this being kind of on its own. It's less a property and more of a sandbox, right? It's not a place where D.C. or Warner Brothers would build or could build anyway. It's a place to come and play. It's a place for fans to come and say like, oh, what if, but it is, in a sense, something that's just allows these characters to come together and play in a way that hopefully Warner Brothers can just leave it alone and say, you know what? There are people who like this, you know, let's just, let's leave it alone. Let's let them

"Rare to see especially in this era to see movies that are fully full voiced celebrations of what the people making. You wanna make you know. And i think those are the ones that actually work best in this comic book space too because comic books are similar in that. Like people just like i wanna see sharks. Eight and people like great. This is perfect for that. So you relationship to the suicide squad characters at all no no. I'm not. I didn't neither do i but it is. It's an interesting experience to watch a movie. Like this and i have to admit. I don't think i ever actually finished suicide squad like the first one. I may have watched. I think i've watched big chunks of it on tv. But i don't think i ever like sat down and was like time to watch suicide squad watching this one. I have no idea who any of these people are. With the exception of harley quinn and the movie is relatively free of being like you've been waiting to see blood sport like this or a Whoever it man like this. And i think that there is almost like a self reflexive joke about like nobody knows who these characters are and they are in without giving anything away somewhat more disposable than the marvel characters because of that bite watching a comic book movie with no emotional connection to the legacy of the characters is it does make you look in the mirror and say what am i doing with my life. Well why why am i watching. The guardians was like that too. Absolutely i certainly for the majority of people in that. But he made it kind of emotional and such a huge success that they wound up being a major part of all of those other movies. They maddening. yeah it's that same thing is like dan. Dan knows his daughter. You know is that.

"No and then you get into like what felt like you said a challenge where you have batman. They're not batman. Robin fighting the tight fighting a bunch of enemies in titan. I died the first time to this. The second time i killed everybody titan. Anyone anyone better. I did not have a good time with this one. I probably played at six times before. I beat it. I really hated it. It's annoying but i beat and now my question is where do that. Titan dude come from negative. They got all the titan after the last point. Yeah like was he just like in a basement watching cartoons or something. 'cause you titan arkham city. It's been a week. They rounded up. Yeah someone is a good idea. Hey we need satan. Goon in this game might not. Let's just throw menendez. Even though it doesn't make any sense yeah and all the The goons with the armor at looked like pillows duct tape to them. They annoyed me. All the guys. Stun-guns annoyed me all guys. They were madison Hate there's more things to mention about this before. We go to shelf stagger back. You had the batman defusing the bomb. Which was dahmer on a timer. I almost died. Couldn't find the bombs you're on a timer gives you the most ineffective way of finding the bombs. Yeah usual meters. there's all you're getting closer. But i couldn't figure it out a couple of times. Yeah no. I didn't do very well with it either. And you know what who cares and then the hardest fight for me is when you have to fight a bunch of robots that. Don't show their countering that. I had issues with now. It's interesting because i breezed through that. The first time. The fight. Before with the titan i just i couldn't do a damn thing fight wasn't so bad for me but this that fight where you had to frigging fight them with connery. I couldn't i was hard time one. I'm russell play this game in months and to. I need the counter. I don't play this game hardware. I don't play it without having to read their actual. I looked for the little blue thing. All my spider senses singling. I'd better go triangle. Like that's how i fired so threw me for a big lou when i had to do that. Yeah but once you get through that then you finish the game. You've finished the game. The deal i should say even after you. Disarm the bombs blows up any damn way and say. Oh no harley must have come. back doesn't hardly after he threw off the bridge. He come back doesn't she. Yeah she comes back. She's tied upside down hanging from a piece of iron in the work and somehow manages to get down even though she's suspended like twenty feet in the air and arms the last secret bomb. That's in the joker statue. Okay that's what happened and it blows up. it was going to blow up anyway. Why did we waste our time..

"This idea. Which is why i said you know marshall The best movie well Is that a controversial statement. Anyways we're out of time so james question. There is no good. Oh this is a point of contention in our house. The background for that. That's brad gullickson and my one of our favorite. Theatrical experiences was sitting in an empty movie theater on opening prayer with us watching. Neil marshall's boy and have it. Just a rip roy tie. We had a great time with that movie. Yeah he told me all about it actually. He loved that time and he also rates that movie way. Higher than i think you should. I will say though just to tie that to harley quinn where those things can go. There is a lot to be said for having a good time at the movies. When you're really enjoying it with friends and stuff like that. And i think that harley quinn is starting to tap into that and you get to see especially with some of the birds of prey screenings we get to see people come in and have a great time at the movies and if they can keep that up. You really can't push the envelope of question ability because you will find an audience and it doesn't have to be everybody. It can be a very specific audience of people who that movie will become their heart movie and that will drive something else going forward that maybe other people connect with so. I think that's really cool but see that's dangerous when you're dealing with female headline character because you can get away with that with a male character because if it has a small return it doesn't represent the income potential of all comic book movies for ever and ever if you make a harley quinn movie that features questionable content. That's catered to a niche audience. And it doesn't have a mega return. It could jeopardize the ability to make future ones while now. I'd like to talk for an hour. About how capitalism is the council of the patriarchy. Because i mean with this group of four. That's a one hour conversation i think. That's more of a twenty four seven lecturer in. Never 'cause we are out of time. No thank you so much for joining us. And i wanna thank you all so much for being a part of the omnibus and a part of the family and i cannot possibly thank everyone who is with me here today and nuff and i can't thank you our listeners. Anywhere near enough for the support. That you've shown to this show over the years and i over the one year and some change but i'm still going to call it years. I'm going to stand behind that. And i just wanna to say that. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to billy and danielle for keeping my head together and in the game at all times whether i was making a movie or covering festivals or who knows what else they were the only ones who could ever keep me together insane with it and i really deeply appreciate that you make it very easy with the heart that you bring to the table aerial to keep you in line with doing cool things. Oh we'll thank you. Yeah we love you to ravi. Ah i love you to my darling. And i can't wait for the future adventures. We have in front of us. "They haven't completely divorced from how she was. They acknowledge it and they tried to change it. They're trying to evolve from out what she was back then to what she wants to be now in the two thousand twenty s and how that can be a role model to new readers in new people coming into the comic book. I whether it's true animation three movies or through comic books themselves so i think it's a smart move on deceased fat to okay week knowledge stat. How she started might have not been the best way. But we're seeing a lot of young people latch onto her character and her free spiritedness. So we're gonna update who she is and how she feels to match what she should be as a person that can be inspiring even as anti hero to a younger in new newer generations. Coming into this comic book world. I agree with that a million percent and i think a lot to add onto that especially would resume with the transition from the mail gates the female gaze. I think a lot about in suicide squad. There's a moment where it's the entry into the third act where they decided they're going to fight the villain anyways and they're walking down the street and harlequins smashes a window with her bat shop window to take a purse and when she grabs the purse. She bends over from the waist. Like you do to pick anything up. I guess and picks up the purse and grabs it. And i think women obviously can be sexy on screen and women can do anything that they want. They can display their bodies how they see fit and whatever makes sense to them. But that's the difference right there between a male gaze and a female Shots he mailed game. Because you're looking at it from the behind her instead of looking at it. Outside of her is at the purse that has caught her eye and then showing the reaction shot of the guys behind her as she had been over her very revealing shorts. And you don't have to go that far back right like it's not like it's not like we've been doing great job with the male gaze versus female gates in terms of the introduction of these characters. Layla suicide squad is super recent. But i think to an extent margot robbie get some credit for adding heart to the character and giving a performance that allows for there to be more substance in the role to harley quinn as a person than you would have seen maybe if somebody else had taken on the performance instead. I think she does a phenomenal job. And that's i think also what opens the door for kathy and come in and do birds of prey and and really start to expand that character into something else and i think that creates the ball rolling in combination with like why we like the other stuff that you were saying. It's it is. It is a very astute observation of exactly the things that they're grappling with and the.

"These animated series that are much more animated movie series that are much more human oriented like human ordinary experience types of things focused and i think all of the stuff that harlequin is going through the poison. Ivy is going through gives you that background of something. That is a joyful experience to see them figure out. That isn't going up against the titans of the hero world or whatever right like it isn't universe defying expectations. just buck. who am i and what does that mean. And how do i figure that out. And also what am i going to do about dinner later and i love that and then said when you mash all that up with some ultra violence and some foul mouth profanity. That's my jam right there. It's so interesting too. Because i still remember from the very opening line of the animated series when it was a captain raising glass and saying my fellow whites the second i saw that frame i was like oh this is this is. This is my show. I'm gonna like this. I'm gonna like this and then it ends in a rousing cry of fuck the poor and then you're like okay definitely my show definitely my show. It's so interesting. Though how this show is so specifically tied into certain messages as well about capitalism and misogyny and a lot of the things that this particular podcast is all about. And i always have found it so fascinating that harley quinn is the character represents so many different things as an lgbtq plus icon as everything. But she is. Why do you think that there's been this explosion of so many different aspects of media that focus on her right now. Do you think it's because of the way that she is crafted in terms of her social justice messages or the way that narratives are constructed around the think. It's in indeed like how things are changing currently especially with newer generations. How harley quinn was portrayed in the beginning was very from a very misogynistic like very meal gaze point of view whereas now she's involved to being her own character like we all mentioned the she can carry a whole movie. She's the main show for a lot of people and they've made her more independent and have her literally. Honest screen tried to pry loose from that male gaze character world that was bestowed upon her in the nineties. thousands so this whole independent woman independent person. Just going out there doing what you want to do for yourself. Character arc is very liberating m very up to date with how young girls nowadays wanna see themselves as well. they have something that they can actually latch onto. Learn from. What the new harley quinn is doing and if you look at it how they've done it for instance in the animated series..

"I highly recommend that for anyone who is interested in introducing the younger generation to harley quinn. I highly recommend. Also stephanie phillips new reboot of harley quinn. Future state. Amanda conner in jimmy poem. Yati also had a wonderful run of harley quinn as well that i also love but right now what. Stephanie phillips doing i think is absolutely amazing to have a really strong female writing voice on the character which we haven't had before and i think that's really powerful and i'm really happy that the comics industry has kind of stepped up to the plate with that and with birds of prey. I was so so happy to see birds of prey and all of the various team members the way that they came together in that film. I wonder though how the rest of you process that film comparatively to suicide squad or to something else. Was it what you were expecting. It's a much better. I think anyway. It's a much better film than suicide. Squad suicide squad is a lot of fun. Billy makes fun of me. Because i love the soundtrack from that film. Because it's basically the soundtrack from our high school days. It's like nineties dance. Yeah it is. It is great. Don't tell on me. I would but i enjoy watching that movie. It's really fun. But if you strip the soundtrack out of that movie. I think you go it lose a lot of enjoyment from it but the most fun thing about suicide squad is the music and the one liners and watching harlequin. Beat the shit out of people. There's not a lot more to it and birds of prey is in a whole different tier films. That genuinely good movie in. It doesn't need that crutch like well. It'll tap into your nineties. You'll enjoy it in that kind of thing. I think with both movies. What is noticeable that it they didn't give harlequin top billing basically but she carries both movies completely on her shoulders. 'cause people watch suicide squad because of harleys main look in. She was portrayed new trailers everything and people went to birds of prey. Not for the birds of prey but for harley quinn. The fact that they called it the verge of prey and the emancipation of something..

"Nice all right. Billy were onto you. What introduced you. It will definitely be the tim verse. The batman animated series. I watch that forever. And i think that's amongst the best of dc comic representation on the screen anyways. I'm an enormous fan of timbers. I think it's great brevity. With batman and superman all the way through the justice league united. But i think probably what i like about her. And what i find interesting about the timbers thing is a lot of conversation today is how accurate to the comics or the movies that were watching. How true to the characters are out his cannon. Go along and i really liked the idea that the timbers was this creation factoring for characters that became beloved comic characters. But they're not from the comics. I think that's a really cool thing. And then so when you see harlequin come on in suicide squad or birds of prey. Does it have to be exactly the same as everything else has gone before. An important fact. The movies are often doing things that are way more interesting with their characters. And they sort of wind up being shoehorned into in some of the comic book moments which isn't dislike off on comics but that wealth of creative input in the different mediums does add something to the characters so you get to see with the timbers this creation i think a very fun character and then fast forward twenty five years or whatever and then you get to see margot robbie take harlequin from suicide squad. Two birds of prey. And it's just really this amazing transformation of a character. So i guess i'm within yellow in terms of falling in love. I find her very compelling character once you get to the margot robbie era. But i think she's a very fun character always around like i've slept for giant mallet that she carries around and i think it's great that they get to show that in birds of prey to. Yeah i love that giant mallet. I also love the baseball. That iconography to yeah. It's really a wonderful thing when you get to explore that. But i'm also going to speak up for the comics here. Because obviously i love what dini and tim did in terms of everything with the animated series since that was the genesis of harley on the whole but what they did in terms of the comic books with her was really an extension of what they were doing on screen that got a little darker and a little more sadistic in certain ways than it was on screen. And then when carl kessel picks up the run of harley quinn. He has harley in poison ivy. Take up together in this wonderful partnership in the comic books that i really fell in love with and i have to say in terms of my relationship to the harley quinn comic books. It wasn't until karl kessels. Start of harley quinn's adventures where there's even a sequence where harley quinn goes to hell and there's all kinds of amazing things that happen. That's what i really started to fall in love with what this character was in a larger sense and so now i feel like there are so many different people doing so many different things ravi already mentioned har- lean. We've also had the young adult novel breaking glass which is fantastic..

"As as teeny kid. I was properly six years old or something like that to harlequin and in the full soup with the red and the black little bells and everything like the whole old school suit that we know and love and i loved it. She had a full gesture suit and the way she talked with. So peculiar to me especially. Because i'm from europe so american accents and different american accents can be very interesting and she had just such a way of saying like hey putin and this how she said putin every time to the joker just caught me. I just fell in love and they've never fallen out of love with her couldn't in each iteration that has followed since them. Yeah so that's my intro to harlequin the that men animated series cool so you started out with the very very beginning of the character yes it was first originated. Yeah yeah. I didn't even know that she wasn't part of the comic books. Back then for me was just like oh. She's always been there when i got older and got into comics and got more background information. I understood that she wasn't even part of the comics. They wrote her into the series and then later created background and added her into comic universes wall. So that was amazing to murals. Like oh is there for a little bit of history but yeah no it started for me with the animated series especially because back then. I didn't have any access to comex at that age here in the netherlands. It's pretty hard to get comics. In general you have to go to a specialty shop. At least if you wanna get american comics. Manga and stuff are easier to get in european comics or strips as we call them. Those are easier to get but american comics. You really had to go to the specialty shops so that was hard. Get by so yeah. The animated series was. We'll do this on tv every week. All right so up next. I would like danielle to tell me how she. I fell in love with harley quinn as a character well i think the two different questions that howard was. I i introduced. Her was also in an animated show and it was the version. Raviol- was talking about where she's in the full harlequin costume and hangs on jokers every word and she never made an impression. As that for me. I was just like this portrayal of women but when the first harlequin movie came out with margot robbie think that would be suicide squad and they portrayed her as a totally different character where she was a standing on her own and had her own ideas and was going to become this villain in her own right. That's when i fell in love with her very cool and you really particularly loved that representation of her i did. I loved that reservation for the idea that she could be powerful and intimidating. That was a big deal from her. Most of my life people have told me in not a flattering way that i was too intimidating and so to see this female character represented as both a sex symbol and intimidating. Was really something that drew me in. It was like oh this is great. And the way that she uses the men around her uses their attention to draw them in just to that she can kick their ass. I those fantastic. And i loved everything about the way that they designed her costume getting rid of the harlequin look and going for just totally different image with the red and the blue pig tails and ball the facial tattoos and all that kind of stuff. I was just like yes. This is my villain nice..

"I wanted to say. Welcome to our hundred episode of ride the omnibus and today. I am joined by some very special people who are near and dear to my heart my new co host ravi as the tabby woohoo and my audio editor par excellence william dass hello hereafter known as villi whether he likes it or not. No i think that's great. Okay my name we can get into it if you want but it takes like twenty minutes so no no no the rest of us are spinneys and we will not abide that all right so danielle on the other hand is not only the production head of billy and also myself and also communicator extraordinaire and extra brain when i need it. In every way imaginable she is also on the board for ride the omnibus inc and is absolutely amazing so hound of applause for daniel. Oh thank you. what an intro. So indeed i brought all these wonderful people together because they are a superhero team to me. They are not of course the justice league. They are more aligned with the legion of doom. If the legion of doom didn't in back of sucked and in facts era going to celebrate someone who talks about branching on their own as a super villain today. Which is of course harley quinn and we are going to celebrate all things today and so what better way to do it then with my favorite super villains in the world so we are going to go in reverse alphabetical order and start with robbie a- asking how you were introduced to the marvelous character that is harley quinn and what format you were first introduced to her okay as an police. I won't be youngest of the group. I was very young kid in the nineties. When the batman animated series was out. And i think in ninety two harlequin was introduced as a background character for joker. I think the first episode was jokers favors and thing and it was used. She was not even meant to be a big role or anything. Like hey putin you know the way she would talk. She didn't even have that much lines. She was just like a background character. And oh my god. She caught my eye and apparently not just my. I the eye of a lot of different people because i think paul dini after that got inspired to make her full-fledged character and actually keep her in the animated series so i got introduced in the nineties..

"To look one. Both sides have the diamonds and their star on each head The weathered side is the sidewalk facing out for people to see. I'm not sure if you can tell it's pretty weathered and this is i don't see a magnet unless there's a magnet inside so this is going to be a friction. Hold sure how i feel about that. I'm used to working with magnets and you can feel the magnets. Grab this one. I don't think there's just a a friction. Hold a metal pike cares. Maybe they've got a pig hole drilled inside the hammer for more stability but man i. I'm not sure about that. I headed at the house. I i'd be tempted to glue that hammerhead on there doesn't fall so the last piece like i said when which is not a bad thing is ahead and we're going to be very careful. She has the pigtails. Don't grab a by pigtail and pull up or pull pigtail off the head We're gonna go like forehead back ahead. Where the bulk of the stuff is just blew. It comes out so so easy. Came out of the bag. Dear i'll that's purdy as he. Here's what i'm talking about. All the little hair strands. I mean if you don't want to actually be careful when you grab the forehead do that. Don't grab a couple of strands of fall down in front of her face. Said you won't be very careful in delicate kinda grab front back. Don't force it or use lot of strength. Just kinda wiggle. If he does come out you just keep working at. It'll it'll visually pop out while this is so let me check out. These is okay. So she's looking up novoye. This is so pretty. It's keyed as most of is. I'm guessing that's going to be magnetic we will find out. I'll stick it in the top for neck. You can see at even the neck muscles restrained a little bit where she's looking back at over the way they have these key. You really can't put it in the wrong way it won't lineup right like all emission not supposed to looking for no. She's not supposed to look over his shoulder. So probably gonna be up a sideways type thing and to hide the line they. She's wearing a choker to kind of disguise that join line in the joke. The choker has a heart right there in the middle man. I like this and with the the old school harley head you know. She's wearing the red and black and the mask. He's your delineation lying there. So it kind of masks that the join line so pretty. Oh my goodness of the easier was put together. Also like i said this is a harley quinn premium hell on wheels available on side. Shoe dot com. And this is the the harley. The i'm you see never really liked her much batman adventures with the red and black harlequin suit. I liked her more in the I guess you arkham asylum and the connor pammy audie style of harley. I'm trying to find something wrong with it man. I'm just not i am. The only thing i really am hesitant about. Is the hammer. The head of the hammer being just friction on air not magnetic. I think maybe they should have put at least a small magnesite ahead. I don't know maybe it's too difficult seat belt all the bells move a little. The belt is not molded onto the body. See comes all the way you can kinda Why want to lace cross her hips just like that boom. It's so good in its simplicity. This is a great addition to anybody's batman joker harley type lection dc fish this of your favorite iteration of early which it is mine. So we're gonna turn our back like that so there you have it. "First time i watched the movie i couldn't decipher what it was that she she had four shots lined up a noses. This piss yellow drinking lemon cellos. What the hell like. that's not. that's not very bad. Asked for shot of lemon cellos. Your harlequin for fox sick. But when i saw it the second time and i could actually read what was on a bamako. She did four straight up shots of absent. The start which that's that's pretty intense and didn't have the whole sequence. She breaks the driver's legs and she sits down. And then you have this woman. Come over like cigarette girl. Kinda circular thing is just a tray of nondescript obviously whatever it was psychedelic or uppers downers to selection of pills to take taking. She takes one and one of the things that even when i was not liking it as much the first time around. I did laugh when she quickly in that same scene as obviously hit a bad place in grabs a woman's corwin person peaked. Green all into it so that was good but the the other thing i want to point out is having seen film the second time i stopped because when she's talking to dinah lance and she's telling her the whole thing about like a harlequin need the master annals you see the One of those girls with the cigarette girls that off the tray of pills and it's creepy. Fuck they they don't really show it except for the background scene. They don't show that those girls where this creepy cloth mask where like these is. It's almost close encounters of third kind but with hair. If you if you go back to it oh rear. Catch that at all. No it creek. I mean why. They didn't show that. I don't know because it is a creepy creepy little detail. That's in that club that i wouldn't caucus dinner clubs very small whatever but yeah check out the servant that sequence when harlequin is drunk and talk into dining at the bar. You do at some point. Get a glimpse and it's really creepy. How they look a also creepy and fitting into what i said about the team of enslavement. Domination i noticed that all the little. At each table they have a mannequin. Head which is obviously a woman's mannequin head and the second time watched it. I could decipher that. All the mannequin heads. Which are women have. What seems to be pairs of roman scientists is gloves either covering their mouth or their ears. There is so it's wow yeah it's weird symbolic representation of scientists desire to censor bettering controlling. What women can see say or hear. Wow that makes it a much Yeah that's that makes it much deeper fill yet. I did not catch that. I mean i was shocked. Really going this film. I dismissed this movie. Whatever you brought up all right. This can be fun movie that that we obviously both love. We'll do this movie that we but i looking at him like you know what this is a little bit richer or an attempted something much more richer and deeper than i would have ever expected. Yeah kind of makes me wish they had done more of that. I like i feel like it kind of they touched on it but it was so subtle. I didn't catch a lot of it. Yeah no again..

"But she like a looney toon character with with the bean bag gun rifle and tax. It's like oh wait a minute. I forgot to say this thing. And you go on tangents and you. Then you go on the the you touch upon the back story or origin of the hunter's a little bit which which happens like three times in the movie where they keep going back there and also i wanted to. I forgot daniel. Pemberton does the sm- music for this. And he did the soundtrack to man from the man from uncle guy ritchie's foam. If you saw that. I have really enjoyed that one. I loved his score for this and this is fine. The music in the snow. I mean and suicide squad to the money that they spent for music rights alone. I mean they have different cut of music every forty five seconds of like expensive popular music. Yeah i think it wasn't as bad as suicide squad. Suicide squad was like a music video at points. It was crazy but go back towards the so you get lost and to the point and then it goes back and then literally twenty minutes later. Were brought back to the same moment of harley going parlay and you're like your oh this is too much too much you guys take into. But so now that i knew that Had that idea of it being from her point of view. What i want to bring up. What i thought was very interesting. They said she wanted to street. Level story in apps of the world of the usual superhero fair but they also wanted to be unusual and structurally unusual unusual and margot robie and claimed date that they were loved and inspired by trainspotting and true romance because both which they thought were ensemble nontraditional storytelling movies but have traditional react structures. Which i thought okay. I kinda transparent but when i was watching this would be. I watched this before i read. This article My notes were like so. Is she trying to be a guy ritchie film because it felt like she was going for lex. Lock stock two smoking barrels or snatch jumping around but messier. Yeah not as good. I know you're talking about by the way just a side note. Have you seen guy. Ritchie's king arthur. Movie have not. It's really weird. He does all of his typical like jumping around rapid cots and everything. But it's it's medieval times or whatever. It doesn't work. It doesn't work for those genre who it's amazing. Okay now anyway. Sorry i have to check it out. But the other thing when i was watching the movie initially in the animated sequence and just help craze i would've i would've said guy ritchie louise or natural born killers but they claim was trainspotting or true romance which i don't remember torments being that dead optima ahead structured. It's not like pulp fiction. No no it's not. Yeah yeah that's weird. I don't get that. I don't get that either but whatever i've seen i've seen true romance lot deny that's mcconnell households favorites of true But in any case you've got to give it to her. She actually the other thing. I thought was interesting. Got her us citizenship in the midst of doing this film. So i thought that was. That was interesting and the other interesting thing. Talk director kathy yan. She wrote directed phone. Call dead pigs in two thousand eighteen. Which i have not seen seems a quite a bright woman. She attended princeton. Nyu and she was a reporter for the wall street journal. She's got an interesting resume. I yeah i read about her to as like wow this is..

We're the hottest deal. He's not an executive anymore because he gave up still pretty rich. But that's okay. He's got an old fashioned suit. Now what do you think. Add what you think about. What's going on with patsy While you know. I mean i don't know but there's a lot of mind manipulation going. Oh yeah quarterbacks trying to manipulator. But then i mean i liked dave and remember she used to be married to damian hellstrom too so yeah and brings up all her memories of how you don't know this kind of stuff you see and this stuff like this these. Are these little chance to let you know. This is what guide needs a starship. Man you got. Someone made him feel so conscious about his awesome facial hair. No i'm sorry. My awesome facial hair is just fine. he's like well. Guess shave it. To- don't want the first torched it looks like a silly face Get a great flashback. I don't know how i feel about this. 'cause i do feel the electroconvulsive therapy as a treatment gets a very bad rap But i also realize how frightening it can be especially if you are in a psychotic state. And they're doing this. This new. His new marvel declassified shows show on sirius. xm yeah people should Oh of course. Tony putting together his squad of you know. Oh you're the only people i could find. I liked the squad. But you know this. This is the thing that bugs me about it. So we've got scarlet spider. Man spider wasn't in vegas. Yeah i mean in the co- in in that conan bulky was there when peter the last series he had with peter david fighting it news in vegas all. That's what i was gonna say all of a sudden he's it says he's working as a night shift circa one at the metropolitan museum apart. Like right. yeah that's a lot that's a lot. I guess he thinks shakes out. Just a week in new york for tony. Stark's amy and you know and you know who knows how his last arc ended in. He's not in vegas anymore. Because that our candid yeah but You know what they're doing here with the trojan horse idea. They set up the basically. You're not telling me they killed miss unite out to like if they kill frogman. I could buy it yeah. I'm not gonna buy it Let's like oh. Why do you introduce frogman. Giving my need seamer. Oh yeah i speak sign language with no explanation for why he speaks hanley words. It's like you don't kill this many characters even the ones you just introduced even the b. side characters like children like that. It's killer misty knight. Know exactly to sort of reassure. The fans were to up the ante. And then you know we see you know. We have a quarterback walking away in his terminator face to go to tattoo. But yeah so. I don't know what we're building here but do feel it's lies to whatever great great albatross cover though again it's always I mean i don't know if it's just like the journey it's like the starts going to realize. He doesn't need his fortune to be a hero or the quarterback. You know i can do anything great. That's just what he needed a reason to stop feeling bad about himself. Yeah exactly we can learn some kind of less than you know. Yeah i. I mean i don't mind. I love the story of how the actions progressing. That's the thing. I don't wanna i don't wanna stop so would a good story. It is because it is. But it's like you know you you you give me these characters you make we care about them and then you blow them up but also you know. I know you didn't blow them up. That's the thing it's like. I don't even take the totally boa. I love the fact that actually that was like so. The 'cause the last i heard about gold i don't i knew it was working at a restaurant so the i don't know what was the survivor. So that's the only. That's the only thing i'm not sure of 'cause he did. Actually the last time we start. Gargoyles was a issue of patsy walker. Held at story. And where you find out that basically His other identity actually is as this guy who is a mystic. It's kind of Who's that who's that guy with the demon attached in dc comics. Her got that you're gone again. Yeah yeah yeah. Actually and so gaga is marvel's version of that except he's a guy who kind of made himself into a car coil. sort of. Yeah he's guy yeah he's just like stuck in the body the yeah yeah But yeah he does own a restaurant and so but there was a thing where he was trying to work with magic to try and bring him bring his guardrail self back which obviously is managed to do now but wound up putting splitting patsy walker into oliver different. She's been over the years so it was an interesting story that was we were here restaurant. I love the fact. That frogman is there to frogmen has had a couple of other gigs with batboy for awhile. The he he the towed in batboy actually actually he. The toad wasn't the iron. I think it was the deny think. So yeah yeah. Yeah they were. Team recalled the rejects for a while. But yeah so. He's had he has been around there on that for a free and it makes sense that he'd wind up working for another for another superhero busboy in their restaurant. You know and then it's like when when the call to adventure comes is oh. Let me get my superstar. So i liked. I liked it. he's there. I liked it. There actually is an argument for. Why is there and i like that. He is a part of it. And i don't like they blow them up at the end too. But we'll see what happens again physical cliffhanger. You'll see everyone's you know exactly and voice with corvette has said i don't want to kill anyone. I don't want to hurt anyone. You know so. I think that i don't think he would say that. And then blow them. I remember i kill the vendors before brana. They've been brought back yeah. I think he's manipulating something. Okay sore four. Eleven yes man. Dan blake is messed up. And i'm just gonna say this right now. Jane foster is way to calm talking to clearly. Hannibal lecter dan blades beginning. I don't think she she doesn't know that well he's off. Yeah but it's like how long you know. Even if he was normal. it's like. How long has he been buried in thor. Yeah i know you can argue it. But i'm just like Really i don't.

I think once we see that you know it's aim or whoever who has won the Who want to be working for. she owner. Whoever they're going to center in trying to rescue wanda Well actually i think she got caught up in it. That's the thing. That's agnes sweet. Generally speaking use agatha harkness and. Monica i basically. He's i think that ben after after engaged so game but a type wanda. She's not well they put it to you simply she's not well You know e- exists but vision is gone and the world has changed the last five years and i get the feeling that basically what's left of shield does exist now with these because all of the scenes in the last division field take place but for the game which i think is. They've really that needle in that time when they're like. No this is what happens in between so this is how we can actually get like some shield stop at the end is what shows been doing. And here's where we are now. So that probably. Monica and agnes are assigned to her and agnes being It is active a heartless being a mythical being beaten. Someone who maybe you know insent by doctor strange. No i need you to be there for her. Because she is a power are powerful and that kind of thing so that they get sucked into what the the on what has Burst into this quantum pocket round to manipulate her awareness of the world and that they're trying to establish their and i think that's what we're going for so that's my prediction. We'll see if it works. I'm not gonna say mark my words. No it's okay but assuming that it all works out great. Then i'll be very happy doing talk some comic book so because what is my what it's supposed to be comic book. What is you know my favorite comic book today. Oh man okay so some porn. I'm gonna go. It was very close with moda act but as modi has it all. But i really like juggernaut up story. I'm going to yeah so so d- so is a mutant. Yup in denial and we get what the whole thing is. Which is that you know as happens with some of these mutants. You know she. I don't even know. She accidentally killed her parents or her parents were accidentally killed when her powers surface. Again flared up there that first time or something. That's where it looked like. Yeah but it's the central powers are diesel ration- yeah it makes sense that something hit them and her powers automatically kicked kicked into dampen it but it couldn't save her parents so it's not that she killed her parents that she couldn't save or slow. The dry was her dad. Did she slow the driver down. I mean Might imagination is that yes she. She somehow managed to prevent basically saved herself by decelerating her when the driver hit their car but she couldn't save her parents because unfortunate nece. I the great use of swarm here home. Were these swarm powers to send these in his ask. Everyone laughs about more. But you know what you ever get. You ever get to hear mass dude. It's not good. Nazi skeleton covered in bees. Yeah and the you know the the whole thing crashing. I like and this is where i get my idea about. You know if. I was a person trying to deal with. "Is a super villain. I i can do that all day. Quite it's you know. It's it's and i love the fact that i always feel when they get short shrift to edison myself but everyone likes to do everyone. Loves loves tesla. Even though i actually think that was probably the scientists. Because didn't he did a lot when he actually worked but when he he had ideas of what he was trying to do and didn't want to do the work to do it. I think you're i think your theory works in the my theory were member i said. Oh maybe they're tricking her somehow. What if aim somehow lake in other tricking her like. Oh yeah you can use your Somebody's tricking or. Oh yeah you can bring vision back. You can create the perfect life. And every time she uses her powers siphoning off her powers like power that quantum tunnel. Well it's it's interesting because you know what it actually gives me and this is sort of this thing where it's like. Oh i think marvel's going to try and do better is it kind of reminds me of dark phoenix when jean grey is being manipulated by What's his name mastermind. Yeah to see a world that is her of course obviously isn't a leather leather bound. Romance novel wander but of course you know. That's the one that doesn't envision. Her fantasy world astle either bound romance novels. What would this girl growing up in the slums of segovia her fantasy those crazy wacky eighties. The crazy you ask sitcoms imported from america you know and i think that is maybe even I actually get the feeling that maybe that is what they're building is they're saying you know what okay we wanna tell. The story of dark phoenix better because obviously fox screwed it up like three times. Now let's look at what happens in dark phoenix. Listen to okay. So super. Powerful person but wanda okay great. Someone wants to manipulate her for her. For the power she brings. Okay search building out these fantasies. Okay well that sounds great. But what if we don't do you know just a classic you know bodice ripper fantasy. Because is that really bothers. I guess they are written for women but is the fantasy having your body stripped or is your fantasy something else and invariably it always. It always is ole ease. Wait for it. The man i can change the man who isn't quite what mama wanted. But you know what. I can change him. And when you're wanda guess what you can change. Well i'm thinking it'd be more about resurrecting vision because well i'm doing a super. I having never seen this understanding like doing the pitching so i like to think of superconductivity as is like the pitch meetings i imagine for the film we are about to see. Oh yeah well okay. Well let's do this. Let's do that. And i think the idea is. Maybe that's what they're looking at. And they're using quantum technology that the aim has funded that the mandarin has funded through. Its ties with a hydra. Of course wanda is a product of hydra and will hydrate in shield maybe simply two sides of the same currency no longer valid. The mandarin and is a much older much older being and being looking to create a universal world order. So like when you look at the so and even if you go back and he'll to mention novels in the the The idea of the age to primacy model of it It it does build into this idea of these of being in a person and an organization that they've created that is seeking world domination but arguably for the good of mankind The idea of you know we will control mankind and then we will make things better because everyone no one wants to show man time study purposes all your purposes stated by controlling. You know a couple of islands somewhere. You don't need to control all mankind for that but if you want to control all mankind you wanna say have a much more noble ideal and so. I do think that's something that we're gonna be looking at with us that there could be. These is in to the mandarin and again would explain why that is the one disney plus thing. They didn't release. It is so weird you know. That's the thing we look for what they give. You gotta look for what they don't give you. Yeah you gotta look for the secrets that they want to keep it because there's something in there something in that that's my take on it You know i am. I you know a meisner going to be reviewing each episode of one vision Of course we have on the podcast. We're do a big one division discussion. After the first episode jobs we'll probably get into a lot of comic lore. Yes i figured maybe some background. Yeah yeah but that's the thing. I think that's the thing with. Emc is that their comics adjacent. Yeah they they know the comics. They know who they know the basic character of the comics. But they're going to tell their own stories. And i think that's what makes because they understand that we said this a million times. They know what makes for a good story. They know the stories that they've told that are good and they know how to keep telling them and make them continue to be good so I like that about it beyond that Beyond that it's you know. I mean i don't know much more to say such insensitive looking forward to it and so i'm monica rambo's gonna be in this right so i'm thinking i wonder if they're gonna give carol danvers comical gorge. She can be caught in some kind of something.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is self-explanatory

"Suicide Squad kill the justice. League is about the suicide squad trying to kill the Justice League. The other big video game news from D., C. Fan Dome was learning a lot more about suicide squad kill the Justice League from rock steady games the developer of Arkham asylum city night. Suicide Squad kill the Justice League is officially its title and game is about the suicide squad trying to kill the Justice League the trailer for the game opened up on a decimated metropolis. There was a weird glowing giant purple skull ship in the distance and it cuts to Harley Quinn on a rooftop goofing off and making jokes in response to just the General Radio Chatter. Then the rest of the suicide squad was revealed along with Harley Quinn. This game will also feature Captain Boomerang with a pretty intense Australian. Dead Shot and King Shark they had some comedic banter making fun of dead shot for claiming he never misses well King Shark absent mindedly popped green lantern and Batman balloons, which is interesting to me because there have been side quests about popping balloons in the past arkham games. And then Amanda Waller came on the line telling them they had to get to work or she would blow them up. Was All pre rendered but the next part of the trailer gave a pretty good idea of what to expect in terms of Gameplay Harley Quinn zipped around using some kind of Hook Shot zip-line thing and used her bat mainly to attack these weird purple enemies. King Shark looked slow but carried a big machine gun dead shot had a jet pack did a lot of shooting and Captain Boomerang had some kind of quick teleporting ability while he was also throwing boomerangs and other weapons. And all of this happened while outkast's B O b bombs over Baghdad played on top of it. After finishing off the group, they quipped that what they did probably will knock a few years off the sentence and then Harley remembered that there was an Alpha target they needed to pursue. And that's when Superman showed up with his classic Yellow Belt and red. Underwear look. At first, it seemed like he saved a helicopter pilot from a crash, but then his eyes start glowing purple and he killed the pilot prompting these suicide squad to realize they are meant to kill the Justice League, the trailer ended with. Superman. Not really reacting to getting hit in the head with some kind of pipe that guess King Shark through and it revealed a twenty twenty to release window for playstation five. Series. Exit PC. After that trailer host will Arnett revealed a few more details about the game with the voice cast from suicide squad who were in character Harley. Quinn specifically referenced getting excited about killing Batman and Captain Boomerang mentioned the flash. After that game director Sefton Hill showed up. There was this whole silly conceit that will Arnett was being transported around to his hosting duties and Hill had joked that they had just shipped him a green screen which was pretty good joke but he answered a few more questions. The game does play S- in the chronology. So it is technically a sequel to Batman Arkham night it's going to be a lot different, but narrative is moving the plot forward. They decided to do a suicide squad game because they consider their games character-driven and the suicide squad highlights. One of the things DC has always been particularly good at villains they appreciated how flawed they were. It also gave them the opportunity to create an interesting impossible scenario, which is, of course, hunting down the Justice League. The gameplay will be a hybrid of hero empowerment action and Gunplay, which is definitely a unique for rock steady Batman does not use guns. The game will offer up to four player Co op, but will totally be playable single player. If you're playing alone, the AI will handle your other members and you will apparently be able to swap between them seamlessly. You can also go back and forth between single and multiplayer over the course of game it is also an open world. That world being metropolis. The twenty twenty to release window really surprised me. Batman Arkham night released in two thousand fifteen they lent it a lot of support post release but I think it's pretty safe to assume they have been working on it at some capacity since that game released since arkham night released. A suicide squad game was also teased as early as two thousand thirteen where there was something at the end of Batman Arkham origins. So to learn it is nearly two years away. Surprised me. I'm not really disappointed. Honestly, I'm happy to wait just surprised I would have assumed it would be

Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

"The real question though Rachel is were you familiar with the birds of prey and these characters prior to the film. So I knew I've done a lot more of like the Marvel Mc you blah blah blah. But I knew a lot of the DC characters from the animated series like Justice League and Justice League unlimited and teen titans and like the the original Batman animated series. So I knew a lot of these characters but not in the context of birds of prey. yeah very cool my myself Black Canary I learned about a lot from the justice video gains from the CW show Arrow. Which I it's honestly it's not my favorite. Wdc Show but at the same time boy it started at all and I do love. It is your favorite. My favorite is honestly the flash the FLASHER supergirl. I've heard those are the two. Warren really likes them. I forget to watch the. I've heard really good things. Yeah no the flash. It's tough because if you're not the person that like 'cause Arrow has it's weird funky shit to but like if you're not a fan of the weird and has like weird you might not like the Flash. I love it and honestly yogurt. Sawn has become one of the greatest villains of ANY SUPERHERO BASED MEDIA. I've seen And also his name is. Yo- barred thon boy. Do I love. It really is a good name so we please So one of the things that like what just to start off one of the things I loved about birds of Prey. That is put me off a lot of. Dc stuff is that. I don't love when shows have people that are all attractive in the same sort of way yeah I know where everyone's like a polished millennial or polished older person or Polish like teenager Here's a guy with short hair named Chris. Yeah again you know. Here are all these rails in model tall women. Here's you know all these instagram models doing a show. It's like it doesn't. There's something about it that always takes me out of it a little bit and one of the things. I loved about birds of prey. That will get more into. Is that Everyone was such sessia unique character like they very much came from their own styles. Their own half. They weren't having to in a world together because they were a world together. Yeah so let me ask you this. Can you sum up the story of the movie since we're talking about a little bit in a lot of the ideas of what we love about it How would you sum up the movie? Go Rachel Go. Yeah so high summit up is on the movie starts where a Harley Quinn and joker just broken up. And she's narrating delightfully sort of like how they got together. How the relationship was going sort of all the benefits. She got from being in a relationship with him and now she's the process of grieving that relationship and sort of the the steps. She's taking like when she won't admit to it when she's just sad about it and when she starts to like do something and like work through it And in that process it sort of opens up this This space for a new Super Villain to start to take hold of the city and when that happens it starts to bring all these other characters a cop down on their luck of secret character that is revealed later in the story and even like the the evil guys Driver come into play to handle all these things. It's actually beautiful. A how like all these people get woven into the same

'Birds of Prey' Review: Nihilism for Fun and Profit

"Movie reviews let's jump right into it Eric how you doing okay all right Steve how are you good all right so we can see prepare children we got the movie reviews here which we do every Sunday we'll talk box office as well we'll catch up when I was off last week for the Academy Awards but Steve you did see birds of prey the Harley Quinn thing yes hi would you think well I mean it this is a film that once very desperately for us to believe that it's a G. and twisted in the NBA wanted so much to kind of forget to actually be edgy and twisted it keeps telling us how it deals with the the the and that's not to say that the the latest DC comics movie century isn't doesn't have its moments but certainly Margot Robbie's is was among the highlights of this sort of a spin off of suicide squad and she was certainly one of the highlights of that film but it is fun at times I I I like I can honestly say I can't think of a movie I've seen more recently they are seen so many people work so hard to convince me they're having a good time and yet the it's sort of extraordinarily conventional at the same time unlike unlike suicide squad which is sort of put together by a government agency the birds of prey kind of come together more naturally joker isn't actually in the sermon and by the way I should make it clear we're talking at the joker not the current dot that most recent joker iteration but the jerit letto joker from a couple years ago but he's not in this it doesn't matter but that doesn't stop the screenwriter who Christine at Hudson who did bumble bee which is actually a pretty good script from from sort of leaning into his influence on this whole story when were re introduced a Harley Quinn she and and joke or have just broken up which apparently means that any protection that she has being affiliated with him is gone so suddenly all the criminals in Gotham when the killer and I'm not exactly sure why but she has done some horrible things in the past I guess one of the people she has wronged is there is a crime boss this play by you and McGregor who goes by the name black mask something of sort of a flashy party boy E. but he kind of seems to have one speed in one elevated volume when he speaks he basically like rip Taylor in a black skull mask so he's more obnoxious than threatening the the hit the side kick that's played by Christmas Cena whose actually way more sort of deviant sinister and then black mass gives but we don't really get to see him that much but the the what happens is that they these these email characters all kind of come together some of them are more superhero oriented like a crossbow wielding huntress is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and then there's care during black Canary's played by journey small at bell and there's a young girl name Cass who's play ballads a Bosko is a police detective Renee mon twenty it was played by Rosie Perez and I gotta say of all of all the of all those characters Winstead in parens really kind of stand out I guess not surprisingly and it's it's actually kind of really great just to be reminded how much of a presence Rosie Perez can be and that when given the chance and given this kind of exposure and and sort of elevated in this way there is a far more interesting aspects of birds of prey than just the action of the actions not bad there's sort of a subtext about what happens to people when they sustain prolonged abuse or other forms of violence most of lead characters are suffering from some form of PTSD or another in the sort of find unique ways to cope with that it's a it's a shared condition that brings these women together and bonds them and makes them not only surprisingly strong as a team but but it's also sort of a new weird little group therapy thing the film doesn't address this directly but it's sort of hard not to hard to miss it like get a you know a like most things in birds of prey it's not exactly subtle but anyway the the I guess of the action sequences are kind of a mixed bag of sort of standard issue cases in explosions in fighting and with a few sort of clever original and and a little bit bloody idea sort of sprinkled in but a few case you're in curious birds of prey is actually yes very rated R. the some there's some gory violence there's some liberal usage of four letter words but I'm guessing the under age folks who will be speaking into this movie will not be traumatized by anything that they see it's got a great Sir high energy soundtrack to really bombastic score by Daniel Pembleton and and enough sort of deviance from Robbie and company to the keep it interesting mobile when the problem with the film is the bad guy even the Gregory is terrible in this he looks like he's having a good time but you know the thing I hate more than anything else in the world in movies is watching someone have fun yeah because it does not this I don't know I don't know what someone on a roller coaster I want to get on the roller coaster like so that's sort of the problem here and okay when DC finally figures out their bad guy problem they're gonna probably for anyway but that to me it's a mixed review but but that's about I got a I don't know if it's positive or negative all

Breaking Down 'Shazam!'

"Finds itself at an interesting inflection point. I would say I thought she was a very fun and entertaining movie, but it did not really feel like anything that had come in the DC universe before. And you kind of explain to me. What should I am is? And what it's trying to do. Sure. I mean, I kind of had the. To do the same thing after watching the movie because like right around the time the post credits scene with a evil Caterpillar happened. I was kinda like I've no idea what any of this stuff is. So thankfully, Mike does have a a piece on the ring dot com. A great website kind of breaking down the kind of Kazan origins. But yeah, he's he was actually originally called captain marvel and like in the movie there was like a wizard named 'schisms who gave him like all these superpowers. But when he sorta got folded into DC comics because marvel had its own captain marvel he then became Zam. But the whole spiel is basically the same thing like the wizards powers you activate it by saying Zam, and then I guess in the big conversion you just become buff, Zachary Levi. Yeah, I didn't even know buff Zachary Levi was going to be a thing that I would ever have to talk about. I can't say when I was watching Chuck ten years ago. That this ever crossed my mind that he would be a superhero, I think Tony Lee. This movie is pretty significantly different from superman vs Batman and the Justice league films and even wonder woman, which I thought was you know, is a very charming and obviously hugely successful movie. But there is a lightness in the tone, and it's not quite as operatic goofy. As was l-. You know, what did you make of the kind of movie that Sam was trying to be yet? No, I thought it was fun at kind of had like almost throwback Amblin entertainment coming of age vibe like something you'd see from like Amblin in like the eighties. But with the caveat that instead of a kid going on venture or something he can just become a superhero. But I thought it was a it was it was kind of an appropriate tone for for the kind of here that this guy is and I kind of like that, you know, a kid like a teenager becoming Kazan like he has like a bit of an aimlessness to him at the beginning. Like, there's not the sort of great power with great with great power comes great responsibility type speech. You just sorta has to learn things on the fly Yemen. One of the first things that the character does after he realizes his powers as he just goes to a convenience store in buys beer and candy. And you know, I it, you know, the movies clearly pitched as sort of what if big, but superhero, and it's very effective in showing us like maybe not with the real world ramifications would be because it's a little bit different in tone in the real world. But some of the like aspirations that you have as an adolescent, and the things that you wish you could do when you were thirteen sham does for the first hour of this movie, and the movie ultimately just becomes a story about like friendship and the way that we act bigger and older than we are. And what we can get away with in that time. And then it does turned into a little bit of a superhero movie. What did you make of the kind of balancing of those tones? Yeah. I mean, I think I did prefer sort of the the first half of the move. In that respect, as you know, there are so many superhero movies out there. And I think for the most part it's sorta gets derivative to when the movie gets the guy discovers his powers, you know, like Peter Parker, like scaling skyscrapers type of thing. But it was fun for Suzanne because it felt very like very genuine response. What if a fourteen year old kids suddenly had powers like, yeah? He would try to buy beer. He would go to script strip club in like beam about the chicken wings because this is a PG thirteen movie. You know, if he's in a world where superman Batman exists, and he doesn't really know. What to do is? You just if he can't find people to save is he just going to he's going to try to make cash and become a YouTube star. It was an interesting approach. But I think like I preferred that half of the movie versus like, the Mark strong shows up with seven CGI deadly sin, archetypes, or whatever. And it's time to punch him a lot. Yeah. I agree. I don't think part was active. It's funny because it feels like a movie like this, which is not exactly a reinvention. But is a is a reconsidering of what these kinds of movies can be still does arrive and its conclusion at the notion that needs to feature a lot of punching and a lot of fighting the bad guy. I'm curious to see if as we grow inside, the D C E U, I guess much like Zam. If they'll ever change the the the approach that they take having kind of the final showdown in the final forty five minutes of the movie that was also one of my struggles. Honestly with wonder woman, which I thought as I said was really clever and well made and then ultimately just turned into Diana fighting a demon monster who was played by David through Lous. What do you make of the decisions that DC is now making to singular is each of their movies? I mean, it's interesting because like, you know, they they did a pretty quick pivot from like fast-tracking their Justice league movie which end up being like relative to the expectations a bit of a bomb for them. Also, it didn't really track critically. But you know, they're kind of like making these films that have this very little interconnectivity like aquaman was only really playing the seeds for Auckland to and I guess a trench spinoff, which I could go on like a twenty minutes handed about the trench about the trend. Can't wait for the trench. And like kind of the same thing with wonder woman sequel in feels that way, which is. To you know, if it does well enough at the box office like affiliates just leading into sham two or maybe like a black atom movie, which is like a sham villain. That's supposed to be played by Dwayne Johnson. If you look at like the C projects that are in the air like a rebooted suicide squad, James Gunn, new bad movie. Perhaps a flash movie there's all these other projects like the one glaring omission is there are no plans to make like a Justice league to and not to say that would never happen again. But clearly like the D C you right now is content. Just kind of throwing stuff out there and seeing what resonates with audiences yet. If you look down there slate, we talked about this a little bit during the release of aquaman, but I was just in add an in Vegas at cinema Khan. And they were very proud of the approach that they were taking telling their stories because the next the next handful of movies. They have is of course, Zam, and you know, they also have joker which is coming in October. Which also feels quite standalone seems to have virtually nothing in common with the movie Lakesha Zam. And then there's also a birds of prey which is. Theon story of sort of five superhero team that will also include Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, and that totally and visually looks completely different from those other two movies. And so they've taken this decision to not just make that flash movie and not just make whatever inevitable green lantern movie. And with the same kind of stormy visualises that that Zack Snyder created, but to just kind of individually each story, which is what a lot of comic books are actually a lot of comic books have separate illustrators. They have separate writers their tones are quite different amazing spider. Man could be quite different from x men and superman could be quite different from, you know, detective comics, and what's going on with that, man. And of course, I guess next year late next year. We'll have the Batman which Matt Reeves Batman movie. Do you know, your your very closely track the comp films for us is it more interesting to you of all of this the fits together or do you like it better? If it stands alone and the movies get to be what they are. Well, I. Kind of like maybe I just have a bit of a marble fatigue. Just because it feels like we've been preparing for endgame like just just forever. But yeah, I kind of like this approach because you know, like, if something doesn't, you know resonate with with audiences like I personally wasn't as big of a fan as as wonder woman as other people were which is fine. You know, I I like parts of it. But, but you know, for the most part people really enjoyed it. And I think you know, it's an interesting approach. I think what will probably be most interesting is with wonder woman command and Zam they've all been pretty well received. And they've made a good amount of money. I'm curious what happens like how the DC EU responds when something flops with critics audiences in the box office. Do they like shake it off? Or if it's like, if it's bracing a certain tone, like, you know, let's say joker is actually quite terrible. And and you know, it's like a Scorsese prestige that. Just kind of doesn't work like will the DC you kinda void being that experimental. Again. I I'm curious to see what happens when there's kind of like a speed bump on the road for them. I am too is an interesting question because it does seem like in with Shas AM and most likely joker and handful of these other movies. They don't come with that two hundred and fifty million dollar production price tag. You know, they're definitely smaller movies with more modest ambitions, at least in terms of the execution of the movie. And so the risk is lower. So if let's say joker is not the sort of world-beating, cultural colossus that many would have us believe this week. That's okay. I think that they could probably survive that. And it's an you're right. It is a really interesting pivot away from all of that interconnectiveness. Is there anything else about his that you you really liked and you responded to? Yeah. I really like that, you know, I thought Zachary Levi was was just so good at like kind of capturing basically like, you know, a kid in a swollen dealt spot ended it so well like there were times where you almost felt to childlike for guy who's still like fourteen years old, but you could tell he was just having such a blast. And and yeah, I would have never expected Chuck would be like a swollen superhero. But I never expected Jim from the office to like, you know, make some hard movie also become buffer like Michael bay film. So I I guess, you know sick. I'm stars. They can transform. Yeah. Could you cast a sitcom debauche sitcom figure into into a superhero movie right now is there? Anybody springs to your mind? Is Jim Parsons our next. Green lantern. You think? Oh god. No, no. I'm trying to think of like if someone from parks and rec ado that transformation that isn't Chris Pratt. Because I mean, he's he's just forget about this point. He's he's like a discount printing. Frazier. But he he has done that as well. I mean, I guess maybe if if Adam Scott were cast as as galactic that would probably that. That's as close as we're gonna get
