"harkey" Discussed on The Economist: The Intelligence

"Perhaps one of the most jarring things about being in Ukraine, especially in the east, is that the horrific stories of loss are just everywhere you look. Ceremony is a freelance producer and contributor to the intelligence. Even here in a coffee shop in the northeastern city of harkey, though people seem to be moving on, each of their lives has changed in the last year in countless ways. Right down to their morning routine. My morning starts whether I'm taking my phone before I curl up to bed and actually check in with everybody's life. If they are okay. Yeah. It's just constant. This is Kate from harkey, or at least that's how I know her from Twitter. There, she's tried to be a voice speaking to an English audience about the experiences of Ukrainians, but her real name is capable of. So, before we start, have you ever tried the shake? Give cake. No, I haven't. No. So it's the same. And people should know about it. Okay. Sure. I'll try that. Who was Kate from Harvard on February 23rd? 2022. Just a normal girl in her care. I had a job. I loved had family I loved. We plan to maybe have children soon my husband. That was it. I was just happily living in joy in my life. Was a very long year. For me for us for everyone, there was evacuation in the beginning of the war. There was a lot of funerals. It changed us, all of us. I mean, if I tell you it changed me for the worse, is that too bad, because I feel like I've become less of myself less happy now and for example, I'm afraid of phone calls. Have you ever met a person before who is afraid of when their phone ring in? Because I'm afraid that somebody died. And then getting informed about it. So that's how it changed me. I guess. And what made you come back to Harvey? So at the beginning of the war, Russian army was very close to hierarchy, but it was almost encircled. 24/7 Bond, like everything burnt and explored. And after a few weeks of living in the basement, basically, I broke I couldn't take it anymore. I decided to evacuate. My husband and brother decided to come with me, but we couldn't convince our parents. It was heartbreaking. People you love under bombing shelling. And then my mother had a stroke and made August, I guess. Yeah. And these people who are older, they can't take this much stress. This war makes them really physically sick. It's common. It's not only my mother. So we come back to care about her also. She's doing better. She can walk and speak. So we've been blessed. This looks amazing. So what is it exactly? Business. Caramel. Buttercream and there should be nuts. Hazelnuts. Okay, I think probably some people nuts in here. Mmm. That's amazing. That's very good. I'm surprised that people outside of hikaru but no one knows about you. I do like borscht, but. We can't plan. For what we will do when this warrants. For me, we plan to have children, but that was put on hold. Because it's just scary to be in this vulnerable state to be pregnant right now. When you might be forced to evacuate or run, or maybe you need to hide from a rocket. How do you keep going through all of the stress? I mean, this situation in Ukraine, it's heartbreaking, but also Ukrainians are so inspiring small nation of people with different views and different lives and how they are able to come together to resist this. That helps a lot. After we said goodbye, Kate went home, and she thought some more about our conversation. And she followed up with this voice note. That's question about how this war changed me. I struggled to answer it because I asked this myself also. And I don't like the answer. I'm gay. It feels like this part of me that was responsible for being happy, carelessly, and small stuff in life. His melting away, you know? And instead of enjoying my life, I'm always on guard. That's the change. And I really hope that after the war is over, that will go away. And I will be able to be happy that my following instead of virgin out because I immediately assumed that something of what happened and I'm just going to get this you right now with this phone call. You heard me what I want to tell the people that is listening, I want to tell how thankful they are. Seriously, every person in Ukraine understands the three depend on your health a lot. And we appreciate it. More than you can imagine. Anyway, thank you.

"Scott say what's up to fire nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with? I had a lot of what's up, everybody, happy to be here and what a great day. Man, let's start out with fire. Obviously, you know, for me, it's big failures. I call them resets. And a lot of times people think resets are a thing that makes you have to start all over, but I believe resets are a key to success. Because for me, every time I hit a point where I have to reset, I have to go to that next click. And what made me successful up to that point isn't going to work for that next click. So people could say like failure, that's kind of cliche, but I think resets are the key and maybe a lot of people will disagree with me like everything should be all good and a nice little path to the top. But I think the big resets are the key to success. I think people are scared of recess because they kind of feel like they're going backwards or they're starting over and people kind of get a little nervous with that concept. But fire nation, it allows you to clear the deck and say, okay, let's start fresh. What's the next step? What's the next process? What did I learn from some of the mistakes that I made? And of course, some of the successes and wins that I had going forward. And listen, we're talking about how to build a $100 million marketing empire from the ground up. So obviously Scott knows a thing or two about the power of the reset. And I want to talk Scott about your journey. Share with us how you got to where you are today. I'm a street hustler. I'm a college dropout. I barely graduated high school, I've been very passionate about the marketing business and the advertising business I had been that way since I can remember as a kid. But it didn't start out all rosy. It was a hard journey. I started in radio. I started selling radio like 20 years old because I was pretty much failing out of college. I tried to play football in college, failed that. And I just started selling radio. And I loved it, and I started to work with ad agencies, and I'm like, man, I think I could do that. So 15 years ago, we started our advertising firm, Owen's harkey and associates. And we started in my business partner and we started in his kitchen and Scottsdale with two cats. And a small little condo in Scottsdale, and we were, we would make excuses to meet people for coffee or lunch because we didn't have an office. We were embarrassed. And 15 years later, we have almost a couple hundred employees, 5 different ad agencies. We work with some of the biggest brands in the world, Walt

But for now, that's primarily during the daytime because all bets are off when the sun goes down. The major pedestrian fatality problem is at night and that's why we wanted to start testing at night. But insurance institute for highway safety president David harkey says only one of the 23 vehicles they tested, the Nissan pathfinder, avoided a collision with a pedestrian dummy in all of their nighttime testing scenarios. The Chevy Malibu Honda pilot, Nissan altima and Toyota Tacoma did not slow at all or barely reduced speed before striking a dummy in multiple scenarios. Still, harkey says the fact that any vehicle did well is encouraging. So it's not that it's going to take new technology. It's simply going to take an improvement in the technology that exists to work at nighttime. John Aryan WTO P news. All right, here's the first part of my conversation with Scott harkey, the CEO and cofounder of OH partners. Scott, welcome to the martek podcast. Benjamin, good to be on, brother. Excited to have you as a guest excited to talk a little bit about some of the work you're doing and maybe we can weave some talk about hoops in here. I know that you're based in Arizona. Does that make your sons fan? Absolutely. We actually just launched a brand for Devin Booker right now called coco 5, which is like a body armor kind of Gatorade competitor. So we're really big subjects. Awesome. Awesome. Well, hey, I'm really excited for you for Devin Booker and he's going to be able to market the crap out of that product as soon as the warriors eliminate him in the conference final. Are you ready? Well, the refs typically over the past 20 years don't love the sun. So anytime we have a good team, we get really whiny because we feel like we don't get to call. Can you really blame the refs over a 20 year period? Really? We're phoenician, so we just have a lot of trauma around sporting events and almost making it. That I understand. But look, this is a marketing podcast and as much as I want to talk a little bit about the NBA. Let's talk about some of your work with the NBA and some of your other clients. You work on a really sort of interesting model. You've got this holding agency, OH partners, your integrated traditional agency, but then you've also got 5 or 6 other agencies that do digital marketing. You've got an analytics firm, even things like polling. So you kind of have your finger on the pulse of a lot of different parts of marketing. But I want to talk to you about one of the things that in your application to be a guest on the podcast you said was one of the most important facets of modern technology driven marketing, which is branding. Talk to me about why branding is really strategic positioning. Everything cycles as markers for, I think, a decade, it was all about targeted digital and lower funnel. You get people through and return on ad spend and then for a long time, it was about experiential. So trends kind of come back and for this new world, I consider that we're in right now and we're coming out of a pandemic. Technology has changed dramatically. The television ad can't reach 85% of women 25 54 anymore. And there's no amount of TV you could buy that would ever do that anymore. And it's dwindling by the day. People are just consuming media differently. So I think that's really allowed the brands and the agencies and the marketers to go back to the basics and really think about how they're positioning and how their brand is being portrayed amongst consumers before you can even get to the tactics on what media channels, like really making sure you're differentiated in your position right to the changing mindset of consumers. You know, if I had to read the tea leaves or rub my crystal ball and predict the future of marketing in the next couple of years, I agree with you that branding is going to become increasingly more important. And by branding, I don't mean what does the logo look like? I mean the whole kit of what your mission is. Obviously your visual identity, but also your marketing mix, your targeting, your segmentation. So the reason why I think branding is become so much more important. Actually has to do with technology in the flow of data. We've seen not only privacy regulation from some of the federal governments, even when California here we have CCPA, some of the state governments. We're also seeing the platforms restrict our access to data. Cookies are going away in chrome. iOS was a 14.5 or whatever the iOS update was that made it harder for apps to be able to get data knowing that we're seeing access to data be diminished. What are some of the things marketers can do to make sure that their brand is on point to make up for some of the loss of our accurate targeting? For a long time, it was really about personalization. And I was really beating that drum about personalization as being the future. I think personalization is still important, but the new currency of really the world economy, in my opinion, and I kind of get on soapbox, probably too much so, but I really think belief is the new world currency. If you look at what Elon Musk is doing, his companies don't make money. If you look at when I remember when Amazon acquired whole foods, the market basically paid for that acquisition. If you look at the crypto markets and NFT markets, everyone is now basically betting on who's going to have the belief of the customers. So it's not good enough to have these targeted campaign ads that move people down a funnel anymore. You need to really have this deep understanding of who you are as a brand and how consumers are going to believe what you're doing.

"Russia in a different direction. I think my last question for you is everything is a breaking news headline right now. I will not lie to you. I also have Twitter open because I was joking with our producers at something is going to happen while we are doing this. And we've already seen horrifying news of the bombardment of harkey. What is the thing we should be focusing on that we're going to be getting so much information and misinformation over the next hours, days, weeks, what should we be focusing on? Yeah, so I'll tell you that we're in the fog of war. We're not going to be able to get it all right all the time. I think unfortunately we need to get ready for a world where there are a lot more civilian casualties. There's going to be more nuclear saber rattling and threats. Because Putin, we have to remember has not faced serious opposition. For 22 years, his mind is kind of locked in into a particular direction. Now he's facing it. And his instinct is going to be to double down. So we're facing an acute situation, but in our fight or flight reaction, we need to fight that urge to flee. Because the stakes are too high here, if we don't hold our ground here, we are setting ourselves up for even more serious confrontation down the road that doesn't have to do with Ukraine. Something closer to home. And what we need to remember is that there are precedents for this. He's not suicidal. He's not a madman. He just needs to be recalibrated. And that's what is going on here. Is there anything else you want to tell me? Anything else that you think is important for our audience to know? I would just lastly say my thoughts and prayers go out to the Ukrainian people that are living this, they're fighting for their homes. It's tough to think about that, tough to think about the personal cost. But there are millions of people under threat right now. And they're fighting for our values and our interests. It sounds.

"The east but after 2014 the situation had changed a lot and a lot of people started to think that trash is not our friend but the enemy and our Easter part and hockey as well it became more Ukraine and that it used to be So interesting walk us through what would happen if Russia did decide to invade this part of Ukraine You know Ari it would be like a foreign army invasion not like Slavic brothers coming to help You know today I went to the history museum of harkey and it had a big exhibit from World War II where the Soviet Army the Red Army Russians and Ukrainians together fought the Nazis And that was fascinating but there's a new exhibit well since 2015 about the war in the east that has been stoked by Russia And you know it shows pictures of the harkey sons who have gone to battle the battalions from here and the civilians helping them So I spoke with the museum historian Sarah hay Danang and here's what he told me in Ukrainian He said you know the best signal to Putin is that thousands of people from eastern Ukraine including from harkey region are serving in the Ukrainian armed forces and he pointed out also that that war has been going on in eastern Ukraine for 8 years And how has that war Internet can affected life in harkey which is not far away Well you can't tell there's a war going on at all There are Christmas lights everywhere the city looks beautiful You know it's the orthodox Christmas season It's a university town There are loads of foreign students here particularly from India and Africa So it's really strange to think of this juxtaposition of these troops on one border and yet the borders are open to the world to excited young people studying to be doctors here and I actually asked some Indian students if they were scared of the Russian invasion and they just laughed That's NPR's Eleanor Beardsley in the Ukrainian city of harkey Thank you very much Thank you Ari German judges sentenced a former Syrian intelligence officer to life in prison in a historic verdict Guilty of crimes against humanity The trial took place in the German city of koblenz the defendant 58 year old Anwar rossland was convicted of overseeing the murder of 27 people and the torture of 4000 people in a Damascus prison And pierce Debra Amos was in the courtroom The verdict was seen as a victory for Syrian torture survivors the very people that the regime of Bashar al-Assad had tried to silence in a civil uprising that turned into a war Some 50 Syrian survivors many who brave threats to families back home gave evidence of brutal torture humiliation and starvation in a prison known as branch two 51 in a residential neighborhood in Damascus flanked by a grocery store and a pharmacy The defendant Anwar westlaw and a Syrian intelligence officer was in charge of interrogation there He told the court he never tortured any one But was some of God says he suffered there for months after his arrest in 2012 He's a Syrian musician now based in Berlin a co plaintiff in the case Our suffering was not in vain he said soon after the verdict was announced he had a front row courtroom seat to witness the final session today This verdict.

"Nickname as the jumbo package that they have in that lineup. Of course. Yeah, we're talking about, of course. No, no. Come on. Look at them. 656667. The 12. Is downstairs, and they are on the outfield today, and we see them from left to right right there. I'm going to. I'm going to have it because I'm just kind of a little bit of O. C d. I need them to line up in order like a height. Stature. 22 Swing it a bouncer foul third base side. And obviously, I'm just talking about the fact that Joey Gallo is 65 Giancarlo Stanton is 66. And, of course, Aaron Judge is 67 the jumbo package per viewpoint. It's amazing. And again, they No, they used to have CC. They still have Mike Harkey out there. Dillon, Matanzas, who was sixties they used to have The 22. Who's in there? Got him looking, Oh, great slider that Carlos Carrasco is using today as a strikeout pitch for their and judges just really working beautifully. Carlos Carrasco looks like he's found his groove now their boobs. Two judges struck out twice here. Stanton well at RB double To right center his first time that's on the Linder three run home run before to manage Three fielders on the left side and the first pitches in for a strike just to finish the thought on the tall guys. I mean, it's been this way for a while, right? I mean, now it's just A new group of tall guys added in If you remember that 2017 team to pitch. Swing and a pop up foul out of play off Randy. You mentioned Kansas and see See and Judge and Harkey. But Matt Holliday was on 19th at holiday is not a small dude. That holiday had me laughing because I saw him after the team picture that day, and I said, How are you? And you said, Man, I'm tired. I said, why? I said, because I've been standing on my tiptoes now for the last 15 minutes. Next pitch upstairs. He's standing on his tiptoes for the entirety of the team picture just so he could be a little a little closer to judge.
