Donald Trump Is Grieving
"I feel badly for Donald Trump today. And I can honestly say I never felt that way. That's the first time in my life. I've ever felt that emotion about. Sadness, even when he lost the presidency, which we all think he won. I wasn't sad for him. I was angry for him. But it's the first time I think I've ever seen him stop and be wounded. It's a very strange thing to see. I know the man and I know and remember all too well what he sounded like. A big bodied billionaire real estate tycoon who helped build my city, perhaps more than anyone ever has or ever will. And he did it all with Ivana at his side. Now I know he must have been sad when divorced came and Marla Maples leaped into his heart and his home. But he didn't show it really. That just wasn't what he was about. He's an old school, hardened guy. The kind who believed crying, weakens a man. That to stop and grieve is to slow down and what do I always say? Lose momentum and Trump is a guy that love is momentum. And I'm not worried about him regaining it back at all. In fact, I think if anything, this kind of thing will propel him forward with the kind of a new result and a fury that we haven't seen. I think Yvonne is death in some profound and mystic way will propel him into the next presidential race with a different type of passion and energy. I think this is his let's win one for the gipper moment building up, if you will.
Myanmar executes ex-lawmaker, 3 other political prisoners
"The executions of four prisoners By Myanmar's military government announced in state media has drawn widespread condemnation The deputy Asia director of the watchdog Human Rights Watch Phil Robertson roundly condemns the hunters action and says the executions point up the failure of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN to take the lead in trying to resolve the situation in the country and that it was time for the international community to act decisively This is a real wake up call for the international community that they can not allow Myanmar to slide off the table to be concerned too much about other things and ignore Myanmar's worsening Civil War in the human rights atrocities that are going along with it One prominent activist tells the AP the execution show the generals were out of control and predicts the deaths would harden resistance I'm Charles De
"harden " Discussed on Open Floor: SI's NBA Show
"Second third string card for them, which is like, wow. Yeah, he's behind maxi and I mean, yeah. It's a little crazy to think about. Like, this is a really deep team, man. And like I said, it's really hard not to like them. It all kind of unravels a little bit if you lose embiid for considerable time. So I mean, I think like always, that's the question, but just on the surface, if they're able to stay healthy, this is a really good, scary team that I do think if harden does revert back to where he had been before, if he was unhealthy at the end of last season and now he's healthy again or effort or fit or gel, just gelling better, having more time with the team. It's a team that could win a title. I just kind of because of hardening because of everything we just talked about. I'm absolutely gonna take a wait and see approach with it. But I mean, it's a team that absolutely has potential. I'm with you. Finals potential. I'm with you on paper. I think you could really argue their top two in the east. I haven't loved Milwaukee's off season to be perfectly honest. No, they haven't done it for them. They haven't done much. I wish they'd gotten at least one more wing. It's going to come down to harden. As you mentioned, I mean, if he looks like even how he looked his first stint in Brooklyn before he got hurt and the playoffs he was playing fantastic, the assists were way up. He was playing really, really good basketball. Remember there was that brief conversation can someone win MVP if they were traded mid season and blah blah blah. He was playing really, really well. If he can be even that guy, I mean, I think they're really scary. That version of Hardin plus last year's version of embiid are as good as any duo in the NBA.

CompassCare Needs Your Help More Than Ever
"Again to folks who are listening to this. Folks, you need to dig into your pockets and help out these kinds of centers across America, avail, is here in New York City. They're doing utterly heroic work. Compass care obviously needs your help more than ever because they were fire bombed by genuine domestic terrorists. These are actual domestic terrorists using terror and violence. And as we know, Biden and Pelosi and others have ginned up this completely manufactured concept of white nationalists and so on and so forth. Show me where they are. It's utter Bologna designed to distract you from genuine domestic terrorism, of which we have an example right here, a firebombed clinic, and what amazes me is they took credit for it. That's what terrorist groups do. They take credit. They say, we did it. We want to scare you. We want to intimidate you. We want you never to go to work because you're scared. That's terrorism. That's genuine domestic terrorism. If we had a government that was operating, we would go after those people. And by God's grace, we will, but I hope you'll help out compass scare by going to erasing the need dot com. Is there a place there, Jim where people can help financially? Oh, sure. Erasing the need dot com slash donate. This was where people can go and give. And to your point, Eric, law enforcement really needs to get some arrests. 6 over 60 attacks so far nationwide zero arrest. I've been calling this the pro version crystal knocked since the beginning. And the longer it goes without an arrest, the more I am right, I have
Jim Harden of CompassCare Highlights Attacks on Pro-Life Centers
"But right now I have the privilege of speaking with the founder of the CEO of compass, care, Jim, the reverend Jim Hardin, Jim Hart and welcome to this program. It's an R&B with you today. Eric really is. Well, you are really kind. Listen, you are one of those heroes out there. My wife ran a pregnancy center here in New York City for 12 years, it's called a veil. I know about this world. And the people who are involved in this, they're doing God's work any time anybody tries to bad mouth people, you know, who are on the pro life side of the equation. They have no clue what they're talking about. They really speak at a ignorance because folks like you, you're doing an amazing thing, truly heroic, beautiful stuff. But the reason you're on right now, Jim Hardin, with compass care, is because of what happened recently. You guys are in Buffalo. So tell the story of, first of all, what is compass care and what just happened to your facility in Buffalo, New York? Yeah, compass care has operations in three different abortion hub cities in New York. Because the abortion capital of the U.S. with more abortions occurring per CAPiTA basis than any other state in the union and we're expecting a significant influx of patients from conservative states now. Roe versus wade, reversal of his way, essentially, totally changed the abortion industry. And that means that patients are going to be coming to New York from the conservative states. So what happened in Buffalo was on June 7th, our facility was firebombed. By James revenge, they took responsibility for it in a communique. And they also had their signature scrawl in graffiti on the side of our facility that said, Jane was here. There's catastrophic damage to the facility. And we're going to take, it's going to take hundreds of thousands of dollars and many, many weeks to
We Must Thank Donald Trump for This Epic Moment in History
"Roe V wade, ladies and gentlemen, I want to tell you, roe V wade, I want to say this very clearly and strongly, we know that we thank God for everything that's good. But God also wants to give thanks to people who do the right thing. And if you voted for Donald Trump in 2016, you did the right thing. Because Donald Trump, people said he's not going to follow through. They were very cynical. And I understand that. But it turns out that he followed through on his commitment to appoint justices who treat the constitution as it ought to be treated as originalists. And because of Donald Trump and because of his three Supreme Court appointees, we had a 6 to three ruling overturning row V wade. This is utterly historic. The only thing that it can be compared to is the heroism of Ronald Reagan, which resulted in 89 the Berlin Wall coming down in 91, the Soviet Union being disbanded. In other words, in our lifetimes, there are just a few things. Every number of decades, perhaps you will see something that is epochal, EPO, this is epochal.
Police Response to Shootings Boils Down to Execution
"Anything that you put into place. Now think about this. Even if you have police departments who are trained in these instant shooters, even if you have others who are going through this and their mindset is, this is what we've got to do without proper execution, you end up with these kind of issues and you see really what has become a box response. Now it's not just unique to Texas, we saw this in Parkland as well. And there was a lot of fallout after Parkland. This is why you got into the other issues of hardening schools and putting one entryway in, always locked a secondary entrance that could block someone from coming in. These are the things that you can do to harden schools that would not have allowed in this case. The shooter to come in through a side interest. If you funnel all entries through one area, you can better control it. Again, these are things that actually could have slowed or stopped this individual from getting into the classrooms. And we had a door that was, you know, that was malfunctioning. We had, again, a lot of issues here. I lay all this out to say, okay, what do you do to fix this? And the outcry was consistently gun control gun control gun control. These AR-15s are the terrible thing. They're the reason that all this happened. They're instruments that were used by very disturbed person. Who, by the way, as we said earlier in this podcast, would have never drawn any scrutiny or anything from it. Do you have a record or anything else? Because there wasn't
What's in the Bipartisan Gun Legislation Agreement?
"Of stuff from senator cornyn's office on the bill. It reads, quote, this is a targeted bit of a legislation addressing specific problems that have led to recent mass shooting. Get that, they're specifically addressing evolving. And there was news on baldy, which I'll come to in a second. Unless you are adjudicated mentally ill or a convicted violent criminal, your Second Amendment rights are not affected by this bill. So don't get upset. If you are a gun proponent, a gun owner, it's not going to impact you. In your law abiding. The proposal ensures schools are safe, kids are protected without placing new restrictions on law abiding gun owner. Big new investment mental healthcare, including in rural areas, more resources for school safety and school hardening helps keep gun out of the hands of those who aren't supposed to have them. Federal funding to implement programs help those suffering from mental illness, like veterans courts homelessness courts assisted outpatient treatment, increases the mental health and suicide prevention programs crisis and trauma intervention. That's all good. Invests in telehealth, mental health services in schools, including early identification and intervention. Intervention made the key to me. They've known they have known from the beginning, who the disturbed children are, and when they turn 18, they ought not to be able to run out and get a gun. And so, there are additional times for waiting if you're between 18 and 20. And if there's a reason for concern, it's a ten day waiting period, and that's good.
Rev. James Harden on the String of Pro-Life Pregnancy Center Attacks
"So it seems in a couple days, maybe a couple of weeks, the United States Supreme Court is going to repeal roe versus wade, which would bring abortion, which send abortion back down to the states. It's a state's rights issue. Unfortunately, as this has been rumored because it was illegally leaked, still no arrest because of the leak. We have started to see in a mass amount of violence against pro life centers, across America, firebombing, and vandalism. One of those centers is happen in New York City and the person who runs that is the guy by the name of James R Hardin, reverend James R Hardin, who's the CEO of compass care pregnancy services, and he joins us right now. James, welcome to the Charlie Kirk show. Thank you. It's an honor to be here with you, Charlie. Tell us about what happened to your clinic. Well, about a week ago Tuesday, police and fire rescue responded to smoke coming out of our facility at two 30 in the morning. And they arrived to find broken glass and fire excellent in our facility and on the wall was scrawled Jane was here. A signature kind of trademark for a pro abortion terrorist group called Jane's revenge. James revenge refers to an underground abortion group in Chicago in the 1960s called the janes collective. And so they're not about women's rights. They're not about choice. They're about abortion. Their motto is if abortion isn't safe, then neither are you. And their intent was to shut us down into scare us, but they didn't. We were up and running the very next day. We had to reroute patients out to our Russia facility. Put some hardship in our patients, but we're continuing to serve patients even now. We will stop and we're not
U.S. Senators Reach Bipartisan Gun Control Deal
"Connecticut has now come out and he has said quote, we have a deal. Today, a bipartisan group of 20 senators, ten Democrats and ten Republicans, is announcing a breakthrough agreement on gun violence. The first and 30 years that will save lives. I think you'll be surprised at the scope of the framework. Yeah, before I go any further, I actually agree with you, senator Murphy from Connecticut. I am pretty surprised. I am surprised that Republicans from deep red states continually are able to betray their voters. I am surprised that they're able to tell their voters one thing when it comes to size and scope of government, federal overreach, the Second Amendment, and they're coming to the table to even begin the quote unquote negotiation process with you. This is not a negotiation. This is a capitulation. I'm going to read through. What Chris Murphy tweeted here, but there is not one concession from the Democrats, not one. There's not $1 bill that's going to be sent for armed security. There's not $1 bill here to try to harden our schools. There's not one piece of appropriation to try to make it harder to get into our schools. No, this is not a negotiation. This is not coming to a middle ground. This is Republicans agreeing with what the Democrats want to do. Maybe not all that Democrats want to do, but part of what Democrats want to do. Why is our country less free than it was 30 or 40 years ago? It's because one side capitulates while calling it compromise. Our side, the Republicans, they'll go to Washington, D.C. under the framework that they never have to try to drag Democrats to try to agree with them, but instead they have to go out of their way to try to agree with Democrats. Why is that? I think there's a deeper psychological issue of Republicans that just want to be liked. I know that might sound as an oversimplification, I know that might sound as kind of too easy of an answer, but it comes down to it. You have people that in their life, they live very sad and miserable, personal lives.

"harden " Discussed on Open Floor: SI's NBA Show
"I actually would have no clue because I'm so locked in on that one plane now. That I can't see anything else in my head. But he did complain like he had a few and I feel like he did complain later. He didn't complain, but he said, you know, I'm just playing within the offense. The ball didn't find its way back to me. And it's like, you know, you're James Harden. If you want the ball, you're going to have the ball in your hands. But what's the answer? Three times. Isolated three times in the game. Which is a shocking number. You could have 8 minutes. 43. There were a few. Zero points in the second half, 15 fewer than shake Milton. Scored in the second half. Yeah, like going back to my original point. Look, embiid was understandably bad. And when you take away his physicality and render him a jump shooter, he's not efficient. He's not impactful, defensively. They were going at him from the jump. Like early in the game, they were not really the heat we're not petrified of the paint either. I thought tyrese maxis defense was really bad. And just like talking after the game, you know, I just think it's interesting how I mean and be essentially saying publicly that this is not the Houston version of James Harden. Yeah, man. And he's a playmaker. This is two years in a row where he does this after his team is eliminated. It's like kind of suspect behavior. I'm not gonna lie. I know that it's the truth, but you shouldn't, you shouldn't say that if you're jealous. Here's the thing with that. I know what it accomplishes. Yeah, I mean, he's in a rare spot where he's such an unquestioned star, these star, the franchise player, the guy that no matter what's happening, you're not letting him go. That it affords you the right to be able to say whatever you want to say, I don't know that that equates to good leadership. You know, as we talk about somebody like Steph, who Steph obviously of all the things he does well, I think that kind of is understated with him, like how little drama there is generally what he says. There is a ton of noise out there in the basketball spheres about whose team is this, who's better, staff or KD, Steph never played that game. Steph been over backwards seemingly to reduce that. Steph, Steph got on a plane when Katie was a free agent and learned that Katie was siding in Brooklyn. When he was in the air to meet KD, which was like the ultimate selfless act. Right, and it's interesting, too. You know, obviously draymond had a big role in KD coming there in the first place. He also had a seemingly big role in Katie leaving because of the blow up they had in the middle of that one game. Right. So it's like draymond is draymond. He is really, he runs really hot when he's upset. We know that he gets very emotional when he's upset. Steph is so even keel. And embiid, I mean, he's saying it with a level tone. It's not like he's screaming this stuff at the media. It's that he takes the truth serum, and he's telling the truth, which I get it. On its face, him being the unquestioned star of the team, he has the right to say it. It's the truth. But it's also when you look at the Simmons situation, Simmons handled it very poorly. There's no question, but if you know that people have a tendency to kind of, what's the word I'm looking for here? Flinch and kind of counter punch because of what you're saying, and then hold out, you know, take passive aggressive jabs at you, it creates an awkward dynamic that guys may not want to be there. Now, I will say this, if you created a situation where hard doesn't want to be there anymore, you might be doing the right thing. Which is a whole different conversation. I don't think it's going to happen. And meanwhile, James Harden also said, I'll be here next year, which is like, I've been in situations sometimes where maybe there was a girl I was dating and I really didn't want her to stay any longer than she already had. And that's kind of what I immediately thought of when he was like, I'll be here. But can you just go home? 47 million is a lot of money, which is why he will probably be there. But you have to raise serious serious questions about what that looks like and that has to be the end of it. But it's an interesting question depending on what Daryl morey promised him or heavily suggested he would give him if he agreed to be traded there. So I have no clue what's going to happen next. It'll be fascinating. So I guess zooming out really quick about Philadelphia. One of the reasons I didn't like them as an actual title contender, even when Joel embiid was healthy, was they don't have any wing defenders. And so when Danny Green went down early on three minutes into game 6, it was like, Danny Green's low key, a critical player for this team. Not only was it one of the only guys who was making threes and he did hit a three before he got hurt. But at least a winged body you can throw on hero. He's a wing body. You can throw on Jimmy, although it wouldn't even matter. You have thigh bone, but he can't shoot. He's not a consistent enough shooter to be able to do it all, obviously. Correct. And they were playing lineups where thigh bowl in the first half. I was on the floor with shake Milton, and I'm like, okay. What are we doing? But you look at Jimmy Butler's series. And this man averaged 27 and a half points. He made over half of his shots in the second half of game 6. He scored 23 points and was ten for 19 from the field, just absolute dominance. And not to take anything away from him, but the sixers just can't match up with wing scorers and the most important. One of the most important things. Second to a superstar is like, you need two way wings to win in the NBA playoffs in 2022. Sixers didn't have it. Didn't have any of them, really. So that's number one why I was like, it's kind of like, there's no point in crapping on James Harden and saying, hey, we don't have any PJ Tucker guys who are like tough like PJ. I just don't understand what that accomplishes. When you kind of know that, yeah, we can just talk about this right now about the player option situation. To lay it out, James Harden has a $47.3 million player option for next season. And he is going to opt in. I would be shocked if he acted out. It makes no sense for him to opt out and I think that the sixers would probably prefer that as well, even though it doesn't look great right now. But you could you can tinker around the margins as best you can if your Dale Murray the soft season. You know you have James, maybe James was hurt. After they got him, or he tweaked his hamstring. At some point, I don't know. I kind of doubt that that's the case just because we saw flashes of him being really good in a 6 year uniform. So I don't want to say the hamstring was the reason why he struggled at times in the postseason. But you could add more three point shooting, you can find some of those wings. Maybe I don't know what happens with Tobias Harris who could have upped his trade value a little bit even though his contract is really,.

Are going to be great for Philadelphia. Why? Because you have a motivated James Harden out there on the floor. He's motivated by people criticizing him for how it ended in Brooklyn. He's motivated about being a good teammate. Someone that can find a way to mesh his talent with Joel embiid to mesh his skill set with tyrese maxi to be a leader out there on the floor. The next few months are going to be the very best of James Harden. And on top of it all, if he does all those things, there's a pot of gold at the end of that proverbial rainbow. There is a equivalent of a 5 year contract, or a four year extension, whatever it's going to be for more than a quarter of a $1 billion waiting for him. So I expect James Harden to be the a plus plus version of himself of these final few months of the season. What's always worried me is what happens when James Harden gets that bag. What happens next year when you get into the dog days of January and February and Joel embiid is putting his hand up for a post pass and James Harden dribbles the ball 18 seconds on the perimeter. What happens when Joel embiid, who is not known for keeping things to himself, either on the floor with his body language or afterwards in postgame interviews, says something that irritates James Harden. We have seen James Harden, effectively detonate two franchises in the last 14 months. Houston, he, I think he was on sturdier ground there to do that because he'd been there a long time and that team was clearly on the decline. Brooklyn though, it's all better roses, that first year, our first half year, however long he played there, and then when the going got tough, James Harden literally got going. Say, you know what? I'm not doing this. I'm not feeling this. And force his way to the Philadelphia 76ers. So I'd be, I wouldn't be scared at all about the rest of this season. I think he's gonna be great. I think next year, if you give him that quarter of a $1 billion contract, you should be worried week by week about what happens when things get a little bit rough. Well, maybe things won't get rough. I mean, I think that's the gamble here is that, yes, when things go sideways, James Harden checks out. We've seen it happen enough times to know that that's a risk. And we should not base too much on these first two games as you know, not exactly the highest caliber of competition. They've got some tougher games coming up, and we'll see how that goes. But things could not have gone better in the first two games of the James Harden Joel embiid era of the Philadelphia 76ers. Could not have gone better. Both guys thrived. They look great. They play great. Day one, and then there's this. Like, how about, I'm going to read these composite numbers for the last two games. 24.5 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game on a shooting percentage of field goal percentage of 6 6 7. That's not embiid and that's not hardened. That's tyrese maxi, the guy who, if you were a critic of this trade or concern trolling the trade, it was maxis had this breakthrough year. How is he going to function when all of a sudden the poll is not in his hands and he doesn't have control of the tyrese maxi is like kicking serious ass and like 12 or 16 one game 8 for 14 from the field and next. And that was a legitimate basketball analysis concern, right? How's this going to impact this really good young players emerging? I mean, he's been fantastic, even better than he was before. So I really like things could not be going better. So you're right, Chris, as long as things are good, and in the near term, while they're trying to pull this together for a championship run in the near term. Everybody's going to be on their best behavior. I think it's legitimate to wonder what happens down the road if embiid and harden are not on the same page or if there's a game or a series of games where somebody is do it a little too much and they get but Hardin's also at a point in his career where and look, I believe like not everybody, not every superstar wants to win at the highest level as badly as the others. Some do some do a little bit, some do a lot, some that's all they ever think about, I don't think James Harden's one of these guys who's going to be satisfied just to like hang it up one day being a top 5 all time score and having made a ridiculous amount of money. I do think he wants to win at the highest level. I do think he wants to validate the fact that he's not just a great score, but a great player. And you need to win at a higher level to move from one column to the next in the public consciousness. So I think he will do his best to make the partnership work. I think embiid absolutely sees himself as somebody who could be an all time great, but needs to win at the highest level to do so or to validate it or confirm it. So I think it can and I still go back to, I know it was a smallest of sample sizes. But when hard and Durant and Kyrie Irving were together last season, they look great together and Hardin gave up the ball a lot. He was more than willing to keep the ball moving as long as they were winning and those guys were in a great rhythm. So I'm like, I'm weird. As somebody who's been critical of hardened at various stages, like I'm weirdly optimistic about this partnership. Like I think it's going to work. Yeah, but didn't you just kind of made my point for me though? Last year, his first year with Brooklyn, things did get tough. Obviously with injury issues to some of the guys, including himself, but he was so desperate to erase the stink of what happened at the end in Houston that he did all the right things that he did morph his game into more of a playmaker mode that he did embrace a role opposite Kyrie Irving, that he did kind of try to carry this team when he needed to and be the facilitator when he didn't. And he did it for, you know, the entirety of the season. And then next year, things got a little bit tough. And putting aside the Kyrie stuff, which obviously is a discussion unto itself. Like, Kevin Durant didn't tear his Achilles. Like he had a knee injury. It's going to get him back onto the floor any moment now. So I think when things get a little bit rough, it just seems like James Harden turns. And again, I don't think it happens this year. But next year, armed with the security of a 5 year contract, if things aren't going his way, I'd be concerned about it, I would. If I was Philadelphia. You still do it, but it's just there. It's always there. You're right. And I don't dismiss that at all, but as of right now, I'm bullish on what they've got and the potential there. You're a very positive guy hard. We always acknowledge that about you. I'm Emilia..
"harden " Discussed on Open Floor: SI's NBA Show
"Looked good. Yeah, I think that the supporting cast and all the role players trying to fit in around harden and embiid is now that was kind of my concern last week. And I still think it is somewhat of an issue. We saw Tobias Harris is really figuring it out hard and spoke after the Knicks game saying that Harris passed up 5 or 6 wide open spot up shots and tried to put the ball on the deck and that's the type of player to buy users is. And he hasn't really been super confident in his three point ball. This season, so. It's not a given that he'll fit beside harden and Bieber. He can't ever really develop a rhythm. I think they called, they probably called more than one play for him in that game, but the one I noticed or I only noticed one play called for him. And you know, as you were saying, there's staggering these two guys, which makes a ton of sense. But I mean, Hardin's playing those benjamins with Harris a lot, too. It's what it seems like. The plan is right, right, right. We'll see about in terms of backup 5 Willie cauley Stein they signed to attend a, you know, I don't know if he's going to be able to kind of make the most of an opportunity at some point over the next couple of games. Paul Millsap is a backup 5 probably not viable in a playoff run where you're trying to win four playoff series. So we'll see how that shakes out. But maxi has looked really good. I think that that was also a question mark. He just, I mean, he's just such a really he's just a really special player. Like I love tyrese maxi is probably my favorite player on the team, honestly. I don't think it's the best player on the team. I think he's my favorite, just to watch how he kind of single handedly increases the tempo. You were talking about how the Knicks and the Timberwolves really weren't able to attack Hardin defensively. They tried a little bit, but. It really gets you out of your offense when you're trying to run like a pistol action on the side, and force a switch, and they were doing that with fournier and Randall a little bit. And the Knicks are just garbage. So they turn the ball over and I was going to say trying to say, some teams, I think, are going to be able to do it better than others, right? I look at it seem like Atlanta that's almost kind of begging you to switch all their actions because of the number of similar sized guys that are playing on the wings, et cetera. Miami with their off ball movement. I mean, if they try to hide harden on Duncan Robinson, they're going to be running him through screens, control hand offs with Pam. Chicago is going to be a really, really fascinating matchup. Especially when they're at full strength. I'm not saying these teams are better. I'm curious. I'm excited to see it play out. I'm not predicting it one way or another, but I'm really excited to see it play out. There were a lot of good games on yesterday, by the way. Sunday, I mean, 6 years in its game. Did you watch that jazz suns game? I did watch that game. Yes. I was watching it, and I down the stretch. Down the stretch, I thought the sun's had a really good chance to win that game. I think they kind of lost it just because they got dominated in the white side minutes actually. Their starters were playing really well. Tell me what you think of this. I thought it was a little interesting. Late in the game, they're obviously running high pick and roll with Gobert. With the sons have been better off hiding Deandre ayton in the corner on Daniel house. Putting Crowder on Gobert and switching everything. So taking a playbook, taking a page out of his playbook, basically, where they put rob Williams on a wing and they put jaylen Brown on the big so that they can switch everything. Sure. Yeah, if you want to give him credit for coming up with that basketball strategy. Well, I mean. You got to do what, okay, so if you do that, I don't think that that's wrong. And it just felt like they were getting a really good shots in that game, yeah. Yeah, and I mean, Mitchell's pull up three. He's super confident in it. And so you really can't deep drop. So maybe the adjustment is to bring 8 and a little bit higher on the floor, but then also you got to be tight with the rotations on the backside if Gobert is rolling and but Gobert's just played really great basketball in the past. I don't know like a week and a half. But yeah, I mean, you always keep me on my toes. And I really appreciate that. We have a son's related question coming up that display, but let's go back to the sixers for two seconds. I guess just like. Defensively, is that the biggest concern now for you? I know, I feel like sixers fans are very angry at us because we frame everything from a negative standpoint where we're looking for the flaws in this team, I'm just dubious still because like harden holding up, it's strange. Disbelief for me hardened, just looking so bad and then suddenly looking so good and why like what will it take for either his body to suffer another tissue related ailment or I don't know, something about it at this point is listen, I'll just say I'll just say Mike, I just want to see like I'm a skeptic because frankly. This sounds like such an old man thing to say. I don't know if it's because I'm turning 30 later this year. I just want to see some more like respect for the competitive spirit of the game. That's what it is. Like James Harden, you've put on two teams in a row, you've like time and time again had playoff failures for the last ten years and I'm not one of those obviously there's nuance to those, there's contacts, et cetera, but I'm a skeptic just because I just do you want someone who so clearly quit on two straight teams to like, are you excited about this? How do you get excited about that? How do you get excited about someone who is willing to just give up on his teammates? You know, it was one thing in Houston where although, again, he was the one who, do you look at what happened in Houston, for example, okay? He couldn't get along with Chris Paul, and he said, get this guy out of here. They bring in Russell Westbrook. It doesn't work. He said, yeah, you can trade Russ. And now he's like, I don't think this team can win. I want to get out of here. And it's like, again, like escaping any accountability he had for all the failed partnerships he had in Houston. He says Philly was his first choice. I just have a hard time believing that that was his first choice and he somehow ends up in Brooklyn. But okay, you end up in Brooklyn. Yeah, you're playing with Kevin Durant. He's one of the best players in the game. Arguably the best. I understand this Kyrie thing is literally a once in a century once in a lifetime. Once in a generation occurrence with this pandemic and the vaccination rules, et cetera, he's getting fed up, but we just saw him openly quit on his team in that Sacramento game..
"harden " Discussed on The Lead
"Lead. So Sam, the NBA deadline is behind us, the all star break is just ahead. As a reporter, have you gotten a minute to take a breath here over the last few days with the deadline past us or does it feel like you're sprinting full speed? No, you get a breather after the deadline. And honestly, it's rejuvenating because especially in these still these COVID times where the media access is not what it used to be. And so by the two thirds point, if you will, around the trade deadline and the all star break, you're almost running out of storylines. And the trade deadline always provides that. It's not always in fireworks forum, like this hardened Simmons deal. There's always something though. So you got new stuff to dive into and write about and talk about. So there's a new energy. So no complaints here. Well, we definitely got a big news storyline to talk about at this deadline. Now, we're talking to late in the day on Monday. And James Harden still hasn't made his debut for the sixers. So as of Monday, what's the latest there? The announced today, in fact, that James with that hamstring problem that has kept him out for quite some time is going to be out through the all star break. But it certainly will get into this later, but it is interesting in the context of this hamstring problem having been kind of roundly ridiculed with people thinking that James wasn't really that hurt that he was dragging his feet because he wanted this trade. And so the idea that he's actually not ready to go certainly seemed to contradict that and he can put your tinfoil hat on if you want and decide how much of it you believe. But yeah, that is the word that his debut is going to have to come after the all star break. Well, Sam, we're in the era of player empowerment in the NBA. And you wrote recently about the unique impact that James Harden's power had on making this trade happen. But to understand that, we have to first go back in time. So take us back to October 2020 and a phone call you had. Can you tell us who was on that call and why it was significant? Sure. So Daryl morey at that time, currently, of course, the sixers president of basketball operations, the guy who got this deal done on the Philly side was the longtime Houston Rockets general manager. And in the wake of the rockets losing to the Lakers and the second round of the playoffs and the Orlando bubble. We learned that Daryl is going to resign from the rockets. It was unexpected. Now, of course, it also came not long after, then rockets coach, Mike D'antoni, had headed for the exits. Mike had a lot of frustration with rockets owner tilman fertitta felt disrespected. And that was a big part of his calculus and not wanting to come back. And so that phone call that you're referencing. I'm on the line with rockets owner tilman fertitta, Daryl morey, who would obviously just resigned and then our athletic rockets beat rider Kelly ico, Tillman, who's kind of widely known to be a guy who I don't want to say is a temper, but he can run a little bit hot. Tillman is clearly upset that I asked about the Antonio's exit, clearly not loving the idea that he was somehow to blame for Mike leaving Houston. And he jumps in and says, wow, Sam, you're the only one right in making something out of nothing. Did not agree with the premise didn't agree with the Intel. We strongly disagreed, then and now, but my takeaway in the context of the hardened Simmons trade is this. D'antoni leaving Houston did have something to do with fertitta. But Mike in retrospect clearly could see the writing on the wall, clearly could tell that James Harden was unofficially done in Houston and when James Harden makes up his mind that he has done what they situation, you would be very wise to start trying to figure out your own exit plan. I think Mike was ahead of it. I think Daryl was next and obviously winds up in Philly, where his number one goal was to get James. They have a CEO at the time, Ted Brown, who was very close with James Harden who would also later leave Houston and land in Philly. So the trend is really obvious. When James decides, I think it's a wrap in this whatever location he's in, then you're probably need to heed that warning and figure out what the next steps are. So not long after that call, in January of 2021, James Harden forced the trade from the rockets to the Brooklyn Nets. The nets give up a ton to get him. And after he arrived in Brooklyn, it seems like the honeymoon with this new team didn't last all that long either. What's your sense of what went wrong with Hardin in the nets? It's interesting because in admittedly, even if you read my latest column, it was fairly tough on James. And I do believe what I wrote. But I think this was not all James fault by any means because Kyrie Irving's decision to not get vaccinated was to me the spark of this entire explosion, if you will in Brooklyn. And it was really as simple as a guy like James Harden who has not won a championship who has gotten very close. So by the time he gets to Brooklyn, the motivation to win a title is obviously at a very high level, he's having a reunion with his old buddy Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City days. But then the Kyrie component, I always found interesting because at minimum it just seemed like it was imperfect. You had two ball dominant guards. Now make no mistake. When they were on the court together and that limited time, they were dangerous. But when Kyrie doesn't get the shot, and when all of a sudden he's out for so much of the first half of the season, then he eventually comes back, he's only playing half the time. I don't blame James whatsoever for looking around and just saying, this is not what I signed up for. And I think the age component comes into play big time here. He's 32 years old. He doesn't have time to waste. And so he obviously made a decision as the trade deadline neared that I think I'm going to go ahead and do this. I'm going to get out of here. Now, the nets did ultimately force him to say it because he had been back channeling signals and he had been telling people around him. And it reached a point. Even a column I wrote heading into the trade deadline where it was almost uncomfortable and awkward where, for me, it was clear as day that Philadelphia knew that James was leaving Brooklyn this summer, and the nets didn't hadn't even come to grips with that reality yet. And so the question became, his nets GM Sean marks going to realize before it's too late that you better do something now or else you're going to lose this guy for nothing in the summer. So when Hardin decides he wants out, we've seen over the years that he does have a pretty interesting playbook for getting his way. And you mentioned some of this already, but Sam, can you just remind us what we saw from harden toward the end of his time with the rockets and then in the final days of his time with the nets? Yeah, with the rockets, it was dean Tony leaving people wondered how big of a deal that was going to be for James because Mike was his guy. So as training camp arrived, all of a sudden, you learned that James is not there. You're learning that we're not really sure where he is. And then we're kind of in the peak of COVID at that time. So the optics were pretty terrible. You know, you got social media posts with James hanging out in Atlanta with little baby and putting videos up that don't exactly send the message that he's taking COVID seriously. And then he's in Vegas doing similar things. James, what was the point that you were trying to get across when you went to Atlanta and Vegas when training camp was starting? I was just training. What were you training for? Started the NBA season. How did going to the Atlanta in Vegas help you there when the rockets were starting training camp in Houston? Just one person with trainers. I mean, it's really no different than your kid who's upset and they're throwing a tantrum, but I'm not trying to denigrate James at all, but this is how you get your parents attention so to speak. But the Brooklyn thing, I think is a little bit more up for debate. It wasn't as egregious, but there were similar themes here where the hamstring issue was discussed by Steve Nash and other people with the nets as not the most serious injury yet all of a sudden he's missing. I really significant stretch of games. For me, because I'm based in Northern California. I go to Sacramento Kings games a lot when I'm not traveling, you know, James Harden's last game with the nets, which I was at is kind of.
"harden " Discussed on Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman NBA Podcast
"Bet online, where the game starts. Okay, the trade deadline was a big game yesterday, bob. You know, a blockbuster with James Harden and Ben Simmons. Simmons Seth curry Andre Drummond a couple of pics. They go to Brooklyn harden and Paul Millsap, go do Philadelphia. I know how you feel about Simmons, how do you feel about this deal? Number one, the big winner in the I told you so category was Daryl morey. He listened to people like me and there were plenty of us who said Daryl, give it up, go 50 cents on the dollar, go 33 cents a dollar, do something, get rid of the guy, you're wasting it's a waste of time. Nobody's going to give you what you want. So guess what? He got a high high profile player back in return just as he said, he insisted that he would. So congratulations to you, you got what you wanted. Okay, now I hate to sound like mister wishy washy, but you can make a case for both teams enjoying what they're going to get. All right, let's start with start with to harden to Philadelphia. What if people talking about all the experts in the cognitive diet the last 18 hours? Oh my God, it's going to be a pick and world arrival. The greatest of all time. They're going to put Stockton Malone in the rearview mirror. They're going on, they're going to revolutionize the pick and roll with those two. We'll see. You know, I see why they think it could happen. If harden is playing well, we know me and beat playing at the peak of his game. And he's arguably the most efficient player in the league at doing what he does over the last month. Nobody's played better than Joel embiid. So he's tremendous. Okay, let's see what Hardin does with this. There's no doubt of his technical skill, but there's something missing. You know, first of all, let's go back up, he's never won it. And he's bouncing around now searching wing searching and all that. He's never won it. And there's something, you know, just something that we'll find out. Maybe Doc can solve the puzzle. I was going to say, I think he has the right coach. I think that when James Harden, the reason I think it'll work with Philadelphia is when he arrived with Brooklyn, he bought it. I mean, we found.

"And then you see the 6 game losing streak and they just seem really dysfunctional. And it's hard for me to believe all this stuff's not related, right? Do we think Kevin Durant and Kyrie for especially Kevin Durant would sign off on a hardened sentence thing? Like based off of you recorded 15 podcasts of Kevin Durant. He does like flow and movement, but I think I think I don't know. I thought Watson at Celtics series last year it sure seemed like that team was going to be pretty incredible. So it's hard for me to say this didn't work. The Kyrie piece is the piece, right? All the dysfunction that he brought to the situation this year. Maybe that was too much for James. I don't know. I mean, maybe he didn't want to play with him. Harden did have that what seemed like a joke recently. He's like, I'm gonna put I'm gonna give him the shot myself. Right. He walks off the podium and it seems like a ha, very funny joke, but maybe it's actually it's embedded in some serious frustration. Like, really, this guy just can't get vaccinated. And I carry the load and be tired by April May June. That's the one thing I feel like you were right. You're right about hard in Philly. It's not a guarantee. And it's not a guarantee because the version of James Harden that we saw this season is not the MVP or even like the no brainer all NBA guy. He's just not that the season. Do you think he should have made the all star team because I thought two weeks ago, yes, and then when they named all the all stars last night, I actually thought he shouldn't have made it. I thought there were better guys that got left out than the up and down season that he said. I would not have put him on. If I drew holiday, guys like that, maybe. Hey, Sarah Allen. Yeah, Jared Allen, 100%. Somebody from Charlotte. Bridges in lamella. They've been balling all year. They don't take games off. They didn't show up out of shape. I thought it should be in the all star team, but I really regretted thinking that after the last two weeks. Have been funny if Jared Allen to make the All-Star Game over James Harden. Oh my God. Yeah. But you think all right, from the nets perspective, we have no idea when Katie's coming back. No. So he could come back next week. He could be fined. He could also this could, who knows? We haven't really heard that much about it. Davis, all of the sudden showed up for the Lakers. He was fine. Yeah, I went through the game last night. He looked awesome. So maybe that'll be Durant. But for now, we have Joe Harris seems like he might be out for the year. We have not seen Durant. Kyrie only plays part time. It doesn't seem like they're changing the vaccination piece. And if you're Brooklyn, maybe you're thinking, this isn't your year. And you get Simmons, you try to rehab them. You get a ton of assets back to kind of replenish what you gave up to Houston. And you still have a puncher's chance like once we get to the playoffs at Durant's healthy, who knows. But I'm more bullish on this trade for them than I was two weeks ago because man that hard a number to the thought I give him an extension and not knowing where he's going to be mentally or physically two years from now. That really makes me nervous. Right? There's a scenario here where how many years I love it, but as you know, I did a whole thing on my podcast last week. I have no idea if he's going to be able to stay on the court three years from now. You know, like the history of big guys is a little sketchy. And then the hardened piece, I don't know either. So if you're Philly, you're going all in on two guys who just aren't sure things the same way like Giannis and penciling in. Jokic and penciling in, you know, John morant, that makes me a little more nervous 'cause the way he plays, right? But you have to think long term. Like, how safe of a bet is so and so. And harden and be together. It's definitely a gamble. There's no question. That's also why for Philadelphia here, despite the fact that they might, they might feel that they could wait until the off season and get hardened for less than they could right now. For them, well, if you do that, you're wasting an MVP season by Joel embiid, but he's ran across the shear. He's one of the best bigs that we've seen the century. And if you're going to waste that just to get just to maybe get James Harden for a bit cheaper, that seems in some ways, like you're not respecting what you have this year and Joel embiid. With what you could be and with harden, there's no guarantee it works, but bring in those players that what was the line mori had four years ago, he talks about, I don't know, increased your risk profile. I think he told that the ESPN, you know, we want to raise our risk profile. We have harder than bead. You're upside is enormous. And the downside can be low, but the upside with those two guys playing together, they could beat you in any single way any single game, depending on the series, the personnel on the floor, you could play a more perimeter oriented style through pick and roll. You could play with isos. You can play with the low posts. I mean, those guys together could be an absolute dominant force in the half court when the game slows down in the fourth quarter of postseason games. That's the upside if those guys work out. And I think it's one of the rare trades that could actually be mutually beneficial for both teams with Brooklyn they said you're extending the window. You're getting a younger guy three years left in the contract. He can screen defend facilitate, do all the stuff Blake Griffin did last year and was important to that team before he fell off a cliff and with Philly for all the reasons I just stated. I mean, to me, it makes a lot of sense on paper for both teams. That's my main feeling that I have about the situation, despite how big of a deal it is, it makes sense on paper. And I agree with dealing with on paper with the caveat of we have no idea we're getting from Ben Simmons..

"Edition of the ringer NBA show. My name's Kevin O'Connor and I hopped on with my boss Bill Simmons on Spotify green room and we recorded a live conversation right after Sean sherani from the athletic drop the report about Ben Simmons and James Harden. Having traction. So we talked about what were you hearing? In that situation, what to watch for this next week, and what we predict will happen by deadline day. Thursday afternoon with harden and Ben Simmons. Here's our conversation. I hope you enjoy it. Thank you everybody for joining us on Spotify green room today, got Bill Simmons in the house. He gave me a call bill. And we decided why not just have this call happen live on green room to talk about the latest report between the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 7 8 sixers with some James Harden Ben Simmons stuff, Sean shirani reported that the nets are now open to listening to offers for James Harden and that with harden. There's some challenges with their offense. They get two different systems with harden on the court with harden off the corn and the team would like to play more of a consistent style than what harden can do for them. Bill, what are you hearing with the latest here with harden and Simmons? What do we watching for this next week with what could be a massive blockbuster deal? First of all, very professional intro KFC. Really, really sounded like serious weighty. It better than the table. I'm just, I'm doing this green room. I have a strained hand. I heard, oh no, that's sorry. That's James Harden. Yeah, look, there's been breadcrumbs really. The story drops what two weeks ago or a week and a half, whatever it was. And I was really suspicious. I thought it was coming from clutch. I thought they were trying to drive Benson's stuff. But then you watch everything that's happened with the nets the last two weeks and the breadcrumbs starting to drop and harden missing games for random weird injuries and that four point game he had the other day. And then, you know, more and more people are talking. And I think at some point, when did you start to think this was not just smoke being blown around that we actually had a brush fire? What day was it? Yeah, it was around the time of that report you're mentioning that Jake Fisher report on bleacher report. And I think it was Zach Lowe last month in December. Zack had mentioned the rumblings of it. But at that point, it didn't seem real. It probably wasn't until a week or so ago for two weeks ago that I felt like, oh, this actually has a shot at happening. And the thing is, though it makes sense to me, it makes sense for Ben Simmons to be if you're a Brooklyn and you feel like hard and might actually walk the summer or you have any reason to believe that he might walk. And you don't know that he's talked to the front office yet. But if he does indicate for any reason he might leave this off season, if you get Ben Simmons there, that's a great fit next to a potential full-time carrier Irving at some point later this year with Kevin Durant. They love the switch screens on defense. He can be a facilitator for them in the half court. It makes sense for me for Brooklyn to walk Ben Simmons is my point here. That's why I kind of started to feel okay. I see the logic in Brooklyn doing this. All right, counterpoint. The last time we saw Ben Simmons, he was basically in the fetal position during the Atlanta Hawks playoff series. And then has decided not to play since. And we have no idea what's going on with his head and where he's at and what kind of conditioning is in all that stuff. I think the upside of Simmons and the ceiling of him as a player where penciling that in as a reality and I mean, how is that a safer bet than what we've seen from James Harden the last year? I have no idea what to expect from Simmons as a player. You're right. On paper, he would solve a lot of issues for them. He'd give them a transition game. He'd give them a defender who could defend every position. He doesn't need the ball. You'd still be able to revolve around KD and Kyrie for the scoring. I get all that, but what Ben Simmons am I getting? What Intel have you had? This is now we're in month 9 of him basically disappearing. Nothing that matters. I haven't heard any Intel that indicate that Ben Simmons is going to come right back and be a all NBA talent. But I'm not sure how much even if we were hearing that those rumblings of shams drops source story that Ben Simmons is eager to come back and ready to commit to winning a championship from Brooklyn. I don't think that matters. You don't know what you're going to get necessarily. But what I do know with simons is that some of the stuff like the shot criticism saying he's soft or like the stuff that we've actually seen in the court, him not shooting the reluctance to even do stuff outside of what his own comfort zone passing the ball to fiber in that game that sticks against the hawks. I mean, I think, with him, with Brooklyn, if you're playing with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and you've got like Joe Harris facing the floor and the guys that have on that team, I'm not sure some of the Ben Simmons flaws actually matter that much because of the offensive responsibility is going to be handled by those guys. If you're Simmons, all that matters is him fully embracing what they need him to do. And that's the type of stuff that he was never able to do in Philadelphia because in Philly, they never had a point guard that can shoot threes like Kyrie Irving. Nobody's had a guy like Kevin Durant who can do what he does with Simmons in Brooklyn, what it would be is being a defendant that you've been in Philly for years in elite defender, a potential defense of player of the year candidate. And then it set screens. It's run the offensive transition. It's cut to the rim. And maybe I mean, who knows? Maybe he would at this point spot up and shoot threes. But I don't think that's even a necessity when he's surrounded by the guys that he would be for the nets. And for Brooklyn, I don't know how much more they get than Ben Simmons, maybe. So that's the thing. Yeah. What else is in this trade? Well, so my understanding is that from a Philadelphia standpoint, in that Sean's article, he mentioned, well, what more is really going to give? Are they going to give tyrese maxi? Are they going to give them a TI ball? What first round picks are they going to give? My understanding is that from Philadelphia standpoint, there's no chance they give up maxi, even as probably is unlikely in that deal. It would be more like an older player like a Danny Green in that situation. And for the nets, oh boy, that's the risk there for Brooklyn because if you ultimately though, the key hair Bill, the key is what James Harden tells the nets. If harden indicates to the nets that he'll likely walk or will walk, that's what's gonna determine what Brooklyn can reasonably ask for..

"Know there's <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> still <Speech_Male> this is still really <Speech_Male> about you know. This is the players <Speech_Male> league this stars <Speech_Male> league and it's really still <Silence> about <Speech_Male> what james <Speech_Male> harden wants <Speech_Male> and is willing to do <Speech_Male> what kevin durant wants <Speech_Male> and is willing to do <Speech_Male> what kyrie irving <Speech_Male> assuming he's back on the court <Speech_Male> is willing to do <Speech_Male> like if those <Speech_Male> three to <Silence> make it work it will work <Speech_Male> if they <Speech_Male> want to and the <Silence> good news for them <Speech_Male> is <Speech_Male> durant and kyrie irving <Speech_Male> both have <SpeakerChange> rings <Speech_Male> already. <Speech_Male> So if <Speech_Male> if there's <Speech_Male> if that <Speech_Male> factors in at all <Speech_Male> you could at least make the <Speech_Male> case that they do <Speech_Male> not need <Speech_Male> to to <Speech_Male> do as much. Maybe they'll <Speech_Male> see it as a relief to <Speech_Male> have hardened to do <Speech_Male> some of the heavy lifting <Speech_Male> and they don't need <Speech_Male> all of it because <Speech_Male> they've they've <Speech_Male> had their moments and they've <Speech_Male> had and <Speech_Male> this this could give <Speech_Male> them <SpeakerChange> you know <Speech_Male> another ring <Speech_Male> or two or three. <Speech_Male> Maybe <Speech_Male> maybe <Silence> they look at it that way <Speech_Male> and maybe <Speech_Male> the premise that i floated <Speech_Male> last week in that story <Speech_Male> where i talked to ray <Speech_Male> allen about the celtics <Speech_Male> coming together maybe <Speech_Male> that applies here <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> the premise was the idea that when <Speech_Male> you get in your thirties <Speech_Male> and you've been a star <Speech_Male> in this league and you've <Speech_Male> done all the individual <Speech_Male> things and you've got all the individual <Speech_Male> accolades in your <Speech_Male> thirties is when you say okay. <Speech_Male> Now it's time for team <Speech_Male> goals. And i'm willing to sacrifice <Speech_Male> a little and that's what <Speech_Male> ray on paul pierce kevin <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> garnett. Did <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> a kyrie <Speech_Male> will turn twenty nine <Speech_Male> march. <Speech_Male> So he's not quite in his thirties <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> yet. <SpeakerChange> But <Silence> <Advertisement> hardens thirty-one <Speech_Male> katie's <Silence> thirty two <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> again <Speech_Male> two of these three guys already <Speech_Male> have rings so <Speech_Male> may- <Speech_Male> maybe the recipe <Speech_Male> is different. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> It's not three <Speech_Male> come together at age. Twenty five. <Speech_Male> I will <Speech_Male> say this anybody who <Speech_Male> wants to point to kevin <Speech_Male> to James <Speech_Male> harden kevin durant either <Speech_Male> being teammates before <Speech_Male> or hard <Speech_Male> being sixth man of the year. <Speech_Male> Just throw that <Speech_Male> stuff out. The window. <Speech_Male> Folks that <Speech_Male> james harden was <Speech_Male> like twenty two <Speech_Male> and young <Speech_Male> and sixth <Speech_Male> man of the year <Speech_Male> who <Speech_Male> you know had to <Speech_Male> play behind katie and <Speech_Male> westbrook at that time. <Speech_Male> Because that's <Speech_Male> that's what. The pecking <Speech_Male> order was. He had not <Speech_Male> established that he was <Speech_Male> going to be a <Speech_Male> perennial. Mvp <Speech_Male> and one of the greatest <Speech_Male> scores of all time. <Speech_Male> Whatever potential <Speech_Male> was there. Whatever people <Speech_Male> see. In retrospect <Speech_Male> people did not <Speech_Male> know it. Then <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> once you've established <Speech_Male> yourself at that level <Speech_Male> for <SpeakerChange> eight <Speech_Male> years <Speech_Male> it the equations <Speech_Male> different <Speech_Male> so just because <Speech_Male> he's willing to be deferential <Speech_Male> in <Speech_Male> two thousand <Speech_Male> eleven twelve <Speech_Male> does not mean <Speech_Male> that he's <Speech_Male> Gonna <Speech_Male> be willing to do that right <Speech_Male> now. <Speech_Male> Maybe he will. I'm not <Speech_Male> saying you won't. But i just <Speech_Male> i don't i. "I mean he has wanted to go to brooklyn throughout this process. I have to believe that he's going into this with his eyes wide. Open a all that being said it's one basketball and you've got durant who is playing out of his mind right now. Kyri we can get back into him. We did this on the previous podcast earlier this week. You can check that out if you want a deeper dive into that. But if kyrie comes back he's volume score not a pure pass first point guard and you have james harden who having the ball in hands for like eighteen seconds on the shot clock on every single possession during his time in houston. So how do you think this mix comes together. What do you think of this deal on the court for the nets. Look at it two ways. There's the scenario where kyri is still there. And there's the scenario where kyri is. I don't know where we know so little about this carry situation. You know why. He's begun as long as he has. What the all of it we don't know when he's coming back we don't know what his mindset is is. He still completely bought in. So let's put that to the side for minute. let let is for. Let's for the sake of this discussion. Just say kyrie irving is back soon. Totally engaged in his all in and that he and katie are still tied at the hip throwing hard into that mix. I think even the best case scenario is difficult for all the reasons you've outlined. He's one of the highest uses players. We've ever seen katie and career both high usage although not hard and levels of usage as i outlined in the story week ago i don't what james harden will do and none of us really know except for james harden what he'll do when paired with other guys who need the ball a lot and how much he's willing to sacrifice he did not sacrifice for russell westbrook for all the discussion of we're friends. We're gonna make it work and everything else russell. westbrook sacrificed in that scenario. Westbrook sacrificed another guy who a lot of us me wondered. Would russell westbrook ever adapt game. Well he did for harden hard and did not harden's usage rate. I think only went up. He did not make with chris. Paul against somebody who was friends with they went two years and then then couldn't wait to get away from each other and he was the one who wanted that. Deal done. Paul for westbrook. So he's thirty one and is this time where he's going to be willing to adapt where we he's gonna be going to evolve where he's going to give up a little too and kyrie and how much are they willing to give up now..

"It was funny when george costanza did it because it wasn't real trying to get fire trying to get moved out. What james harden did incredibly disrespectful. And he's not going to live that down anytime soon. You said you thought the rockets did well. I'm not so sure i love. Draft picks. Believe me and draft picks. Ken pay off. They paid off huge for the boston. Celtics in that previous nets trade. They got jason tatum. I think is going to be an mvp in the league. At some point they got jaylen brown who i think is going to be a perennial all star. This league few other guys mixed in they missed some of those draft picks as well but that was a huge success for boston. But i think sometimes we just grossly overweight draft picks yes. They can be enormously valuable when a confluence of events occurs. And your team goes into the crapper the way the nets did in those those years after the trade with boss but more often than not that doesn't happen and granted anything can happen. Kevin durant could get hurt. James harden continue to sink. We'll talk about this. But the chemistry those players might not work out. But i don't know i'm not foreseeing. The nine four x four years being a bad enough team to make those picks super appealing at this point and given that howard. They didn't get a blue chip guy. Depots good. he's all star but he's not like a guy with this enormous upside he might be able to start once again in houston. Maybe john wall discover some magic in that back core. That's a really fun athletic backcourt. They're put together in houston but they didn't get that blue chip guy and for weeks. I was hearing. That's what they want. Teams that talk to houston said. They wanted a star player. That's why boston wasn't getting in the mix with the celtics rightfully said you're not getting jaylen. Brown jaylen brown. For james harden at this point several teams had a similar mindset when it came to discussing a deal with the rockets for the last few hours before the trade on wednesday. There was chatter about philadelphia. I've got to believe that shatter had some some truth to it. That the sixers willing to part with ben simmons if they sixers deal fell apart because the sixers couldn't create enough draft capital or they weren't willing to throw entire east maxi. I think it's a mistake. I think in d like this. You've got to get the blue chip player. And ben simmons at twenty five years old with. I think at least four years left on his contract so he's not able to go anywhere anytime soon. That was the guy to get the got plenty of draft capital. They are now armed to the teeth for the six. Seven years with draft picks they can use to rebuild this roster and maybe raphael stone is a drafting genius. And he and. Stephen silas can put together a roster that way. But i would have preferred ben simmons. Ben simmons or like to draft picks. Give me ben simmons. All day long..

"On ESPN radio and the ESPN app. All this is made even more amazing by the fact that. As James harden goes through this, and there's so much talk. I heard Paul Pierce, and our great NBA team talking about what do you what do you do to address this because the tear he's been on? Obviously he has been the sole focus of every other teams game plan. Do you go out and double team for a guy who's shown us in the last few seasons? James harden playing that point guard spot and Mike dantonio often has shown us he can be as capable of distributors. There is in the NBA. He's really built as the perfect point guard for this might Dan Tony system. That's why so many people were hesitant about the impact that the Chris Paul signing could have shame on us for not realizing that they were going to be able to morph in absorb that just fine. But for James harden in that role, you go out you try and double team him as soon as he gets over half court, and he's going to deliver to other guys in spots and allow them to win this point you've got to do anything. But James harden, though, like that is the only rule much like we were. Frustrated at the end of the AFC championship game. Watching Tom Brady, go back and forth between Julia and rob gronkowski the two most obvious answers for who is Tom Brady going to go to in crunch time of this game. Like, you gotta make somebody else beats you. And at this point easier said than done with James harden because what do you do when a prolific scorer now? Oddly enough, James harden has this great. And he is still probably at best fourth on the list of guys that you would take to start a team with to build around on offense in this league behind LeBron curry and Kevin Durant. Like, you taking James harden before any of those guys, I'm not sure I don't think so. And yet in all of that he is probably the most difficult to guard in the modern MBA because of the way we protect three point shooters because of the way and we heard a lot of these complaints early in the season defense. Is now officiated in the NBA changes made this season to how they do that all of these things, and we know what the common refrain is going to be for James harden is what happens when it comes playoff time. Is there gas left in the tank for this guy that remains to be seen? I think the timing of the injuries. And if you get Clinton cappella back down the stretch of the season and Chris Paul comes back, and you're able to in that lead up to the NBA playoffs. Take some of this load off him allow it to not have to be James harden going for sixty just see you have a chance to beat the Knicks. Then it might be something that we're able to talk about gains momentum back from last season. Now momentum lost unfortunately for the Indiana Pacers. Really sad news last night for Victor, Ola depot. Pacers star player last night. They believe suffered a pretty catastrophic knee injury. Here was Nate McMillan their coach after the game. They x Ray. But we're gonna do MRI tomorrow. We'll have more information tomorrow. And we will basically talk with everyone about what they find out believed to be serious. I mean, do you have a general feel for think? So you know, I think it is a serious injury. But we're not going to really make comments on it until we get that MRI tomorrow and find out for sure. One of those injuries where as soon as it happened. I jumped on Twitter, and the first thing you see is don't look like when you hear some of the things about this injury that we're being said if you didn't see it the first time around don't recommend seeing it now Victor depot on the way out on the stretcher, you know, imploring acknowledging the Indiana fans trying to still draw energy from the crowd. But a crushing blow not only to him who's going to have to spend plenty of time rehabbing this going forward, but for this team that was sitting I believe at third place in the Eastern Conference at this point was has been clamoring rightly so for its due respect especially coming off what we saw from them in last year's MBA postseason suffers a major setback now heading into the rest of the NBA season..

"Shut some thirteen thirteen thirty six sixteen from three, and you know, he might run out of gas a little bit because they get an ad to fight back down fifteen and you know to get to one possession game. There's a trip where they're down three. He got to really looks at three didn't make either MRs last four threes. Played like, forty one minutes might run out of gas a little bit. But again quit at the bugs for making them work that hard Jackie do you. Are you a believer in the bucket of call to? I am a believer. Big believe in the bucks, and I'm gonna call a little bit of shenanigans here on harden being guests. Okay. Because I watched that game start to finish. And I mean harden look what he does with the ball when he's on. It's it's incredible. That one shot tin that hitting the corner was just ridiculous ridiculous. So that aside I watch and see there's something about hardening bugs me and it happened again in this game last night. So they go fall behind by ten. I think it is. He comes down one on three drives to the basket. I got no problem with that. Because he's an incredibly gifted offensive player. I got no issue with him taking them on and go and hard to the whole what happens afterwards. What bothers me. He misses. Okay. That's fine. People miss puts his head down barely jogs back. And then out so like, you can't be tired. When you miss a shot. All right. And then the next time down for him. Sorry. That's just how I feel. You come down the next you come down on the next possession. He misses again. And I forget him. You can. Help me -cause. I'm watching it in my pajamas. But he. He misses the shot. He's frustrated any files the guy in the back court. And so this is something that could hurt our fastball from Yonathan in between did did. No agreed with all that. Right. But this is something that does happen with harden. And it brings me back to something that Koby Bryant. And I'm talking vintage Kobe Bryant said to me once and I wish I could remember everything. But I don't I do remember I was asking about a young player who was scoring crazy who was doing great. And their team was winning and Kobe looked at me. And he said, yeah. Well, you know what I don't care about. How players do when things are going good. I care about what great players do when things are going bad. And so that's why I still hold out as one of these all in James harden is the greatest thing I've ever seen people. Call shenanigans on your Shannon's Jackie. This is this is a double shenanigans just like ain't gonna say them double negative type situation. So. I'm gonna say something here. Not not it. Thinks will go invention going pretty bad. When Chris Paul strains Hammy, which by the way after two or three weeks, it's still two or three more weeks for we're gonna see three. And so they're the rockets are no sepia three owned five without him this season. We saw obviously what happened in the playoffs. When he went down last year man just felt like the rockets rolling C P three goes down. There goes it's going to be big trouble. And then James harden plays the best stretch of basketball in his career. So I mean things have had for the rockets during this ridiculous stretch. And harden his lifted that team back to the point where I think right now, I would say conventional wisdom is the rockets of reestablish themselves. The primary threat old to the warriors disrespected Denver who just lost Houston or to Oklahoma City who also lost a Houston Dern of stretch. But the tough stretch of the schedule C P three goes down, midway and hard to absolutely cared. The rockets soda like it's just. I've been smooth sailing while while no I understand I understand that. And that's a very very very. Okay. But I'm talking about I'm taking the game them down to micro level here. I'm talking about when things go awry. Okay. What happens? And I still think the jury is out for Kevin James harden at the end of big games in big situations. When things don't go his way. That's all I'm saying. And what in the big scheme of things for the stretch. He's just had. That's a little complaint, isn't it? But it's just one that I can't shake sorry. So that was a fastball..

"I know I know I know, but I'm saying from the standpoint that the that those are the next guy's number two options, right? I don't know because I think appellate this fits perfectly would James Hardie. Okay. Okay. Out of his Capella after Capello who was better who wanna rockets is better than Malcolm broad, nobody. Nobody who wanna rock better, nobody robot. Okay. So they have better support game right now. But I don't know if that should that be determining factor navy p to me it is because we talking about the most valuable player because I'm gonna go to him as worse than other one facts. I understand that. But let's go back to like previous MVP's like last year who's the less hard. He had the same exact same right before that Russell Westbrook. That's that's the definition of caring team. Because that's he was not very good years before we had we had Steph curry who steelhead Klay. Thompson was not a fantasy remind being my vote. He didn't get my not at that year. He he was supposed to get it because they were on the seventy three games. They was they was crazy dominate Janas offering to winnow damn seven three. But the Pri the year the first one that he wants James harden or. Two-time if you know somebody even three I know that I wasn't going for curry. But to me about it, you gotta take so much for me. Personally. I don't know how everybody else do when they when they vote, but I love this the story line that goes along with I think that's why James harden has hand fourteen see and now they're back up to one fourth. Any not only doing score on by. He's giving out ten to fifteen says a game. He's getting the rebounds that he had a lot of good rebounds late night game as some crazy precise passes. The warriors were pulling away. Mouse has also through that lob clink appello. He had his back. Yeah. That was a big one. So yeah, we gotta we gotta tip couldn't cappella to. He really held it down form. Like you sell. Some rivers was real big. When I shall the question. When Chris Paul went down, I cannot remember everybody's initial reaction. Or was there a sense of like Danis differ 'cause they were struggling already with them. James harden had missed like three or four games. If I remember when Chris Paul went out with the reaction. I oh, man. It was another blow today team. They were going to lose Chris Paul again. And it was I believe it was a hamstring injury. Something against another hashing, right? He can miss a couple of weeks. I thought it was a fourteen see more hanging around that area. James harden already in and out. And then you lose Chris Paul develop situation. I think more my reaction after that after the injuries like they're going to be paying him forty million dollars. If it's they gave him max contract. He's already declining the day after he gets that max that they were. I think even when we talked about them during their their days where they were struggling we always said they're going to make this is not gonna miss the playoffs. And I think even gone now he's struggling as he's planning out. He needs to be there for the playoffs. That's the biggest thing. He just needs to release some of that pressure. James? I'm honestly with Kenny my whole reaction to this whole thing. I love MVP talk and all that is fun. And I like the fact that it's real close because. I'm with hard and right now as of Jane where he fits buffet byu fist. I might be right back with John because we can't ignore the doing. But as entertaining as this is fun as is. And I think I'm all I'm also remember this LeBron is gonna patiently let himself do what he had to do. And these Lakers one in four when he come back all it is hype..

"Percent shooting. He's making zero point six out of two points teams. Just let them seems letting sue, but I want to go back to the conversation because I don't have Sardinas my favorite right now. What he's doing right now is incredible. Was it? He's average of forty points less than. How's he not your favorite right now? Jane, January fifth because Janas has been doing what he's done all season law. I think that if we if of course, James harden continues average forty he's gonna be that guy. But the reason why I still think that Jaanus is my every p is because you don't get to have those gains with John is because they blow everybody out they blow their last couple of games last night against the hawks. They were forty two fourteen he plays. He played nineteen minutes. And then the game before that they went by thirty the game for that. They went by seventeen. This is some information that I didn't have previous when I was just talking about supporting case. But if the year having these type of game games than I do I have to go back and apologize to Derrick for what I was saying about supporting cast, then if he'd playing nineteen minutes and doing that. I don't think Jantar nineteen this differentiates for me, the most value play is in the words. He's a most valuable player. Go back on what I said. Then there. I apologize. Then you was right because we've seen. Leasing the bugs come out and win without Yonathan against he's miss. He'd be they'd be the raptors without your angle. What if? Playing coed and also play that game. And what I'm saying is James harden loss, arguably he lost Chris in laws airborne RB there four player he's still paying off best. But. But that's what I'm saying that you can't take James rockets team had them be successful. He has to be there. The NSA has to be the two he is. But I'm just looking to talk about the number one team in the league right now. Like they're going to need their stars. Well, does Chris is Quinn Cuenca bedroom and Chris motor?.
"harden " Discussed on The Starters
"I guess it's official. We're now in Facebook. It is still official happy new year, by the way. This is the first drop a two thousand nineteen on today's drop. We're going to discuss the first fan returns for the two thousand eighteen NBA all star game and to beat who were voting for. Let's cast our ballot. Let's have our say, and maybe we'll have some disagreements on some of the physicians. Are we're going to step on the beach to read your questions including good one about John wall's season ending heel injury. It's something we haven't really got into because it happened over the holiday break. We also have worst the week nominees. We've got the punt gun. We've got I assume a tweet that you're going to read something that Matt. Will you be complaining? I forgot to ask you about the tweet. Yeah. Maybe not what we'd be stepping into the complaint area before tweeted the week. Yeah, we can do that. Okay. Maybe. But I. Yeah. James harden, James harden, jeans, it the beard on Thursday night. He hit a contestant definitely contested our employer. Yeah. With two point seven seconds left in overtime and finished with his fifth straight forty plus gained forty point plus game. Rallying the rockets past the warriors one thirty five one thirty four. It was thriller there on TNT that second game of the doubleheader finished with forty four points. Overall, fifteen assists, ten boards clink, cappella, contributing quiet as Berkeley called at twenty nine and twenty one game. And it sorta was harder though. Unbelievable in the second half warriors were up big. It looked like it was going to be a honor here, and they were going to put it away, but Hardin and guys like Austin rivers Daniel house and then Capella like I said got back in this game. And then hardened just really just took over down the stretch and in overtime hitting step back after step back after step back, and he continues this. I mean unbelievable offensive scoring. Run here that he's on over the last five games. But really more. If you're looking at the last ten or eleven or twelve games. It's crazy. Yeah. Only a few dudes have done forty plus in five straight games, Michael Kobi himself and Alan Iverson are the only ones that's pretty good company and people are people say, well, the three balls a lot more prevalent. Now. That's totally true. James harden ghost line a lot? That's totally true. Last night. I think it was sort of an aesthetic Lee. Nice game for James only nine free. Throw attempts. That's decent flops or embellishes that stood out. Ironic. He should have been called the defense. Draymond green should have been called for the foul in that one in overtime. He hit them five. Yeah. But he doesn't get that one. But you're right. He wasn't flopping around there. But man, it feels like he's just like I'm just going to step back three every time. Almost check this. Check this number. He is hit one hundred setback threes. The next guy in the league is at twenty eight. He's the king of the step. That's that's according to second spectrum and Zach Lowe found that. But he's literally perfected that especially with you know, he they don't pass the ball. So he's got to find a way to get space. He's literally made that his shot. And if he ever has a statue outside Toyota center, it's going to be stepping back. I guess needs to Needs be like. to be like moving stats. Bobble leg like stepping back. If Johnson's going to be in the background. It's all these steps against really good defense. And a lot of cases to an bunch of them on the warriors. I mean, Durant's height you can do it against him multiple times. Klay Thompson, a great defender. At least the staying close as possible guy looney looney cooked curry on a jumper one not a three Draymond green. And in the overtime, Shaun Livingston. He goes on and on that one you talk. Steph was in that third period. Where actually I thought that was a key run in the game. Because he kept them close. That was in the warriors could have quite easily blown that game open..
