The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix
A highlight from Rockets Surprise Start & Maxey's Star Turn
"This is the Crossover NBA Podcast. I'm Chris Mannix joined by my colleague Rohan Nadkarni and Rohan this is unfortunately going to be a James Harden centric podcast because the three teams we're going to talk about today, Houston, Philadelphia, the LA Clippers all have a connection to one James Harden and the only team that's struggling right now is the team that James Harden is on. But before I get to what we're going to talk about on this week's show, do you remember that takedown from a couple of days ago that the Dallas Mavericks broadcaster did on James Harden? A really well articulated takedown. Also felt personal. Also felt a little personal. I didn't really, honestly, I didn't feel that way. I didn't think it was personal. I thought it was pretty professional. I mean, it wasn't bombastic. It was all facts. Don't get me wrong. All facts. Just funny to come from a Mavericks broadcaster, but continue. Definitely. An unusual source on something like that, but it was factual and it viral it and was widely applauded for the substance of what it said. Our friend, Jimmy Traina, our colleague over at SI .com says that Bally Sports Southwest has taken down that video because yes, they've taken down the video because according to Jimmy Traina did not meet with the values of the Mavericks. What? What are we talking about? That was the furthest thing from controversial. It was certainly, you know, spicy. It was opinionated. Perhaps it was a take, but isn't that what you want from broadcasters? Like, don't you want them to have a take? I mean, how vanilla do you want a broadcaster to be? I mean, again, it was out of left field coming from a Dallas Mavericks broadcast. You expect something like that from like Stephen A. Smith on first tape first take or skip Bayless on undisputed. You don't expect that from an analyst on the Dallas Mavericks broadcast, but that's where it came from. And that's how it got into the universe. It got taken down wild, wild to me. So I had no clue. That's kind of an embarrassing look. I someone had to have complained. Perhaps it was the Clippers. Who knows? That is or maybe just Mark Cuban doesn't want that guy, you know, acting like he's representing the Mavericks. I don't know. But can like, can we just be adults about this? We all know that that's one person's opinion. No one is ascribing this take to the Dallas Mavericks. It was again, as we sat here, it was all true. Nothing he said was a lie. Nothing was exaggerated.

So let's, where are we after two weeks? I tried to fly through this. I limited myself to 22 minutes. I think I went two minutes over, but I flew through it, tried to get off as many comments as I possibly could. And then our old friend Malcolm Gladwell is gonna come on and do some sports hour stuff. There's some things that he's noticed about direction sports are going in that he doesn't like, and we're gonna try to fix it. So that's the podcast, first, our friends from Pearl Jam. Here we go. All right, I'm gonna throw an NBA Power Poll at you. I'm not sure I'm gonna do this every Tuesday, but I definitely wanna do this some Tuesdays. I'm gonna go through all 30 teams as fast as possible. And I'm gonna throw things out that I feel like are important when necessary. Pot shots, important comments, things I've noticed, some fake trades, you've known me for a while. It's gonna be all the typical stuff. Going backwards from 30 to one, I'll give you the groups as we go. The first group is called the Dregs. That's Washington number 30. They are 30th in defense. And the only reason they're 30th in defense is because we only have 30 teams. I actually think there's some way they could have been 36th in defense. They're the only team in the entire league that I do not wanna watch on league pass for any reason at all. They're one and five, 15 .6 point differential against them. Shoot this team into the sun. I cannot believe House thought this team was gonna go over 24 wins. They might not go over 14 wins. They're awful. I never want them on my TV. Next group, probably the lottery. I say probably, but I'm gonna zip through these teams and then go back to somebody. 29 Utah, 28 Portland, 27 Detroit, 26 San Antonio, 25 Charlotte, who is way more fun than I expected they would be to watch, and 24 Chicago. It just feels like the lottery's in the future for all these teams. I wanna talk about San Antonio really quick. Three and four, kind of a sneaky, tough schedule. They played Phoenix twice, the Clippers, Dallas, that goofy Indiana team, Houston, and Toronto. They're minus 8 .6 point differential because they've gotten blown out a couple of times, and they're 29th on defense, which I was surprised by per 100 possessions. The thing that I wanted to point out here, because this one Benyama thing is super important. This is the best teenager that's come into the league, at least since LeBron. We can debate. LeBron, I think in year two, for two months at least, was a teenager when he was putting up 27, seven, and seven. When he started his 27, seven, seven cycle. Wembe might be the best teenager I've ever seen. They're starting Jeremy Sohan at point guard, and Pop's been transparent about this. No, no, we know we're gonna take some lumps. We're trying to figure this out. I went to the game when they played the Clippers, I talked about it in a previous pod, and it was just an absolute debacle, watching poor Sohan try to run the offense, bring the ball up. Now we're seeing teams starting to pressure them because he's not a point guard. He's a small forward. There's crazy stats now. Trey Jones, just by being on this team and not being Jeremy Sohan, is now one of the best advanced metrics point guards of all time. Right now, his per 100 on -off is plus 28 .3 because Sohan is minus 22 .7. That's how disparate the two things are. Which brings me to my point, this is too important. You have the best teenager maybe ever. You have one of the best league pass players already in the entire league in Wimby. I have no idea how long he's gonna stay healthy, knock on wood, hear me knock really loud. I just got my dog going. No, that was me, dumb ass. They need one more point guard. TJ McConnell is on Indiana, and they have Halliburton, who's averaging a 24 -12. He's awesome. They have Nembhard, who's great as a backup. McConnell's like, he's 13 minutes a game. He's clearly a trade piece for them. Just go get him. I'm not saying San Antonio has to make the playoffs, but they need to be entertaining, and Wimby needs to play with point guards. He clearly needs just to play off people, high screens, all that stuff. They need one more point guard. TJ McConnell is my choice. They have all their own firsts. They're not gonna trade those obviously, but they have some goofy picks. They have Charlotte's top 14 protected first. They have a pretty good Chicago first that I wouldn't give up. They have a first swap with Boston. There's ways to do this. I would just put that Charlotte pick next year on the table and just grab them because you guys hit the lottery. Literally, with Wimby -Dyama, literally hit the lottery. You hit the lottery and you hit the lottery. Get to do two point guards. We're not asking for much here. I wanna watch this guy. I wanna enjoy him play basketball. All right, next section is panic time. Number 23, Memphis. They're one and six. They finally got out to Schneider. And number 22, Sacramento, who lost twice to Houston in three days by 18 and 25. No Darren Fox for either game. Panic time in this respect. I know we're six games in the season, seven games in the season, but the West is one of those things where you're gonna look up and the car is left. The car has left the driveway and your family is gone. You're gonna be basically Kevin and home alone if you don't get your shit together. And I don't even wanna be two games under 500 in the West. That's how deep and good the West is. So when you're one and six, like all of a sudden two and 12, two and 13, Sacramento could all of a sudden be three and nine. I would just be nervous constantly. This is not like last year when the Lakers started out two and 10 and ended up making the playoffs. Nobody is doing that this year. The cutoff line is gonna be 46 wins. Memphis looks, they just can't score. And I think it's gonna be really, we talked about this verno last week. It's gonna be really hard for them to crawl back and be at least like 11 and 14, something like that by the time Ja comes back. The Sacramento thing, we predicted this when we did the over -under preview, like the conference is way better and they stayed basically the same. And now Fox is hurt. So it can take Fox going out for 10 games and all of a sudden you're not even in the playing game. I would just be nervous, so it's both of those teams. Again, it's early. Next group, friskier than we hoped. We have number 21, Brooklyn. Ben Simmons averaging almost 11 rebounds and seven assists a game. And yet you can't play him at crunch time, bizarre. Number 20, Orlando. Number 19, Houston. Number 18, Indiana. And number 17, Toronto. Just quickly on Houston, a delightful league pass team. I had no idea. It's like being at a buffet dinner and somebody brings like some, have you ever had a fried oyster? It's like, great, I'll try that. And then it's delicious. They play hard. I like watching them. And I did not expect a Shungun to be a potential all -star, but that's where we are. They're three and three. Again, they beat Sacramento twice, we'll see. But Orlando at number 20. Every time I do this, I'm gonna have a BS all -star of the week. I used to do this when I wrote my column back in the day. I used to call them the Bill Simmons all -stars, just people that I just liked for whatever reason. I love Jalen Suggs. I don't really know fully what he is. He tries harder than everybody on every other team. He really gives a shit. He feels additive in all these different ways. And yet at the same time, he'll absolutely like airball a three in one of the biggest moments of the game. But that guy cares. I watched a game where he got this hustle rebound. Can't remember who they, they lost at the buzzer. Get this hustle rebound and dribble back out and took a three and missed it and put his jersey over his head for like the next minute and a half. I actually think he might've been crying. He was so upset they lost. He is the most competitive random guy in the league. I love Jalen Suggs. Oh, as Saruti said, it's the Laker game. I love Jalen Suggs. I don't know what he is. He might just end up being like a seventh man on a championship team at some point. He's gonna have a moment on a good team. I don't know if Orlando's gonna be the team, but it's gonna happen for that dude. I also really like Anthony Black more than I thought, but we'll see. It's early for this team. Palo hasn't gotten going. Somehow they're four and three. We'll see when the schedule gets harder. Toronto at number 17, just the Lakers miss Schroeder. And I like what Schroeder's doing in Toronto. They're three and four, but they easily could be five and two. I've been watching them because I have their over under, I bet on. And I like where Toronto's at. I think they're better than they were last year. I think they're at least a playing team. Number 18, Indiana though. So their second in offensive rating and 25th in defense. In the 25th, I was actually surprised it wasn't worse. They can't guard anybody. They're shooting 43s a game. Their top six guys are all over 40 % three point shooting. They're kind of like the 80s Nuggets, but with threes. And they just play with a certain pace. And some days it's going to be bad. Like the Celtics put 155 points on them and it probably could have been 160 if they'd made some shots. Hal Burton's special. He's a 24 -12 this year. But the crazy thing about their offense is that Matherin's been terrible. And Matherin was a guy that they were like, this is going to be our guy. He's making a leap. We're going to trade Buddy Heald. We got to give the card keys to Matherin in that spot. And he's been bad. And their offense has still been pretty good. This is a team that anytime you see them, I don't know if you bet basketball, but if they're like plus 11, plus 12, it's like they could beat anybody any night. I'm just telling you. I'm not saying they're going to win a round in the playoffs, but just night to night, that's a team that they could just go 22 for 45 from three, make some shots. And Hal Burton, they actually should be five and two. Hal Burton blew the last possession against Charlotte the other night. But I've enjoyed watching them. I've watched an insane amount of basketball, by the way. All right, next group, the wildcards. I don't have a lot to say about these teams, but we'll go in order. Number 16, New Orleans, just seem jinxed. I'll come back to them in a second. Number 15, Cleveland. I want to see them with Garland and just, I want to watch them for a couple of weeks. I like the Struce edition, but we'll see. The Knicks, they're three and four. Nice win against the Clippers. The Randall thing continues to be nuts. Now he's taking out guys in the other team. Clippers 13, just traded for Harden. We talked about the Knicks and Clippers last week. Look, the Clippers, they played one game and they got killed by the Knicks. They're worse. I told you that last week. Still feel that way. Guess what they can't do now? Any transition stuff. The Knicks, 26 to six in fast break points last night. Rebounding. They got out, rebounded by 17 by the Knicks. Harden just brings so many things that you don't want in a starting five, but then he brings the great passing and the scoring and he can have the ball all the time. They don't need anyone to have the ball all the time because they have all these other guys who need the ball. I just don't like the trade. I continue to not like it and I don't understand it. I actually liked the team they had before they made the trade. So congrats again, Clippers. Number 12, Miami. 28th offensively. Kind of feels worse when you watch them. They haven't had their full team for a couple weeks. I'm not gonna judge them at all until December. I'm not gonna judge Dallas either. Dallas I have at number 11. They're six and one, fourth in offense. They've had a really easy schedule. So that's why, let's see what happens. Their one loss is to Denver. Let's see what happens when they play some tough teams all in a row and have one of those four games in six nights or three on the road. One of those situations. But they are in better shape than they were last year. And you look at the Grant Williams piece, which I'm not spiteful when I watch my old players. I'm rooting for Grant Williams. It's like seeing somebody you dated that you still have a good relationship with. It was nice to see him do well for them. Derek Lively seems like they have something. We talked about him last week, but he's at least like a rim runner in that kind of Nick Claxton world, but maybe a little more violent alley -oop or a little young Clint Cappelli. The Kyrie thing is the piece that I'm really interested in this. He finally had a good game last night, but for this season, 24 % shooting, 3 .8 free throws a game, which are always the two numbers to look at with Kyrie. What's he shooting threes? Is he getting in the line? And so far it's been neither, but he seems happy. When you watch them, they've been a surprisingly pleasant watch, and he seems like in a good spot. So I don't want to jinx it because as annoying as he's been over the years, and you know my stance on Kyrie, I just don't trust him. And I just feel like a seven -year track record of imploding kind of has to start to mean something after a while, but it is fun to watch him play basketball. And it does feel like he's got a specific spot on this team. They don't have to rely on him too much. It's very similar to where he was in 15 and 16 and 17 with the Cavs where he could kind of float in and out like a cat with LeBron. It's like, I'm feeling it. Oh, all right, let's give Kyrie the ball. The shooting going down though, it's a small sample size, but they also haven't been playing tough teams yet. And I'm just monitoring that because with guards, it can kind of sometimes go sideways pretty fast, and you don't realize it happened until after it happened. Just quickly going backwards to number 16, New Orleans, because they lost Ingram, they lost McCollum already. And they have this Hawkins who they drafted that everybody liked coming out of the draft, but the fact that he can play right away has actually kind of saved them a little bit. I just, I still feel like we need to do some sort of ceremony or something with them. Like we need the people from the Conjuring to just do something with New Orleans basketball. It just shouldn't be this bad every year. Your team shouldn't have two, three major injuries every year. You should have good luck at some point. And this goes back to the seventies. Remember, when they moved, when they became the New Orleans Jazz, their first major, major giant trade was for Gail Goodrich with the Lakers. They had to give up two first rounders, and he immediately blew out his Achilles. He played, I'm gonna say, less than a season. And one of the picks turned out to be Magic Johnson. So that's where we started with New Orleans, and it's been awful ever since. Nothing good has happened in this team other than they've won a couple of lotteries, but even the lotteries they won, the Davis, Anthony when they were in Charlotte before they got to New Orleans, they bring him to New Orleans and he wants to leave. And then they win the Zion thing, which seemed like the luckiest thing that ever happened to them. And meanwhile, we're still waiting for him to play two straight months. So Conjuring people, something. We need something to happen with that team. All right, the top 10. We're at a good pace right now. Where are we at? Yeah, feeling good. This is working. Young and hungry is the next thing. We got Oklahoma City at number 10 and Atlanta at number nine. If you remember, Atlanta was one of the, these are the two teams I was going nuts for before the season for their over -unders. I love the Atlanta over -under. I love the New Orleans over. And I like what I've seen from both. OK sees four and three, Atlanta's four and three. Atlanta's sixth in offense. And that's notable because Trae Young has sucked again shooting west. He's 28 % from three. Last year's 33 % from three. This might not be happening the next Steph Curry thing. Like what age does he have to hit where we have to go? All right, he's not the next Steph Curry. Because I think I hit that age last year at age, when I was age 53. I think I hit that for Trae. They killed Minnesota, which is notable. We'll talk about Minnesota in a second. But they really, I watched that game and they really, really, really handled them. I like this Atlanta team. And I think there's a path for them to be a three or a four seed if Trae can get going. And then OKC, trade for a big already. You're a guy short, like stop. You guys have a chance to be like a 50 win team. What are you doing? I want to see what's going on with Josh Getty in about two weeks. Whether it looks different than it has for the first couple of weeks here. I don't like, he's not going in the free throw line at all. 1 .3 a game. 26 % three point shooting, which we knew. He can't shoot threes. But there's also like the Chet piece of it. Seems like it's throwing them off. And I've watched games where they've taken them out at crunch time.

Here's Chuck Palm with that in today's tech news. Google's large language model, A .I., dubbed Deep Mind, has used artificial intelligence to predict the structure of more than 2 million new materials. A breakthrough, it said, could soon be used to improve real world technologies. Potential applications for the research include production of better performing batteries, solar panels, and computer chips. Real time discovery and synthesis of new materials can be costly and time consuming. For example, it took nearly two decades for lithium ion batteries to reach the marketplace. the In related story, Facebook's metacompany has come up with a new benchmark to test the intelligence of large language models like Open A .I.'s ChatGPT -4. Yann LeCun has come up with an exam of 466 questions that seems to stump most A .I.'s. In conclusion, we are likely still a long way away from reaching artificial general intelligence. Dear Dyslexic Podcast
Fresh update on "harden" discussed on Dear Dyslexic Podcast
"My own research is around a concept called lexism, and lexism is like racism, sexism, etc., except it's that which is applicable to dyslexics. So it's the othering and discrimination of dyslexics. Now that has some similarities with what's referred to as the social model of dyslexia, which was first put forward by Barbara Riddick, which was an adaptation of the social model of disability, but applied to dyslexics, and it's a very good model. It's very strong, and certainly there would be some argument by some people saying we shouldn't mess with it, and lexism is similar to that in some regards. So there are three key features to the social model of dyslexic. The first is that dyslexics face discrimination, prejudice, and so on and so forth. I don't really need to explain that to this audience because I'm sure they're more than well aware of that. The other factor is the importance of social and cultural norms, so how a language is constructed. So English, for example, is very irregular. It's a difficult language because it is so irregular. It doesn't follow any easy patterns, whereas Spanish is much more regular, much more consistent, and so is easier to learn to read, which is why in Spanish-speaking countries, generally speaking, literacy rates tend to be higher, or if they start at a low base, say in South America, they're easier to push up, whereas English-speaking countries are a bit more resistant because it's such an awkward, messed-up language. So those are two key features, both of which I agree with. So lexism would have those features in it. The third feature is dyslexia as an impairment. So in Riddick's model, dyslexia is an impairment. Now, she's not completely clear whether she means some sort of neurological impairment, some sort of disorder. She's not clear on what she means really by impairment, but impairment is used a lot in disability studies to distinguish between a medical issue and a cultural issue. So the cultural is that which disables somebody, but the impairment is, so for example, if somebody is an amputee, for example, then they have an impairment in terms of walking, right? Well, that's fine and fair enough for things which are physical or sensory, but for something like dyslexia, which is built on the assumption of literacy, and that becomes slightly problematic because if the other bit of the model is social cultural norms, well, social cultural norms and literacy don't stay the same. So my concern, and this is going to sound counterintuitive to a lot of your audience, and I should remind people at this point, I am dyslexic myself. I'm not pushing out a view out of ignorance. is that we need to separate the idea of dyslexic and dyslexia, because dyslexia as a theory exists to explain dyslexics, and it exists in the psychological realm and sometimes the neuroscientific realm. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the only theory or the only option we've got. The other option is to think about the existence of dyslexics as being socially constructed. In other words, we exist because there's this distorted and frankly wrong view that somehow intelligence and literacy are linked. They're not linked. You can have somebody who's not very bright, but very literate and vice versa, so that they really aren't linked at all. And there's plenty of psychologists who recognize that. And sometimes what happens is when psychologists start questioning the existence of dyslexia, journalists take it up and mangle the hell out of it. And you get a very unsophisticated view of what they're saying. And actually, they aren't denying the existence of dyslexics per se. What they're doing is questioning the existence of dyslexia, because as a concept, it doesn't really work very well. So what I'm saying when you say we should shift to looking at this as terms of dyslexics are defined by lexism. They are other than discriminated by lexism. So you have a bunch of social norms and expectations or academics sometimes called normative practices or normative assumptions, whichever discriminate people. So how a word is spelt, the fact that you should know and remember how that word is spelt, and so on and so forth. All of those things are actually much more fluid than people realize. So I'll give you an example. This is what a friend of mine calls a Craig special, because it's suitably obscure, weird, and historic, because I started out life as a historian. St. Ambrose of Milan, so we're going back to the 5th century here. Well, late 4th, actually, early 5th, was deemed unusual. And we've got a couple of historical sources. One of them is Confessions of St. Augustine. The other one is The Life of St. Ambrose, where St. Ambrose is seen to be very strange, weird, and have some mysterious power, because he can read silently in his head. Well, reading silently in your head now is not a biggie. You know, everybody does that. You know, it's not considered odd. But at that time, it was considered highly unusual, because when people read, they read out loud. Well, that's an example of a normative practice and a normative assumption associated with literacy. And you can see what exists now and what existed then is very different. Another example would be the spelling of English in the 17th century. People tended to spell as they spoke. So it was very normal to have a whole range of different spellings for words. But now we have a much more restricted thing. So as a kid, I grew up in the South of England, and I couldn't spell the word castle. And I kept putting an R in it, because the way, if you're brought up in the South of England, you pronounce castle, castle. So I ended up spelling it like that. My wife, who's a good northerner, also castle. And she's quite right to call it castle, because then you don't misspell it. So even dialect pronunciation differences. I, up the road from me, well, from an Australian point of view, it's random. You know, it's just up the street. From an English point of view, it's a fair few miles away, is the Lake District. And in the Lake District, there's a village, or there's three villages, and they're all called Plough, but they're all pronounced differently. So you can go up there, and the road, this is going to confuse the hell out of anybody who's not local. They all point to Plough in different directions, but there are three different villages called Plough, and they're all pronounced very, very differently. And I can't remember what the different pronunciations are. So those are examples of practices and assumptions where nice, neat little norms don't really work out. So when you get to psychological testing, and you've got to bear in mind, psychologists are obsessed with data, obsessed with numbers. They're not very good at interpreting that. I mean, I knew a psychologist. He's a very good psychologist. A guy called Victor van Dahl, who used to work at the same institution as me. Very eminent psychologist. And he always struck me as very intelligent, very sensible, because he would quite often say, I can only tell you what, I can't tell you why. And I really wish other psychologists were as sensible as him, because they do tend to build very fancy interpretations on a bunch of numbers, without thinking about wider issues. One of the ways I try and question a lot of these assumptions is through what's called thought experiments. Thought experiments are kind of hypothetical what-ifs, and they go back a long time. They go back to Plato. But other ones you might be more familiar with, if you've got any physicists in your audience. Einstein's special theory of relativity, if I remember rightly, he had this idea about a train traveling at the speed of light. Well, obviously, no train is going to travel at the speed of light. His point was to push our conceptual understandings forward by really trying to understand, yes, but what's actually going on here, to question a bunch of assumptions. And the problem with having lots of numbers, unless you really do some really solid conceptual work about, yes, but what does that actually mean, you could get to the wrong assumption very, very quickly. So some of my thought experiments test and question the concept of dyslexia. Some of them sort of try and lay out how we might understand lexism, because it's a new concept. It's a concept that I created because there wasn't a working concept that I could use, so I had to create one to try and really get us to question things. Now, with the exception of Victor, who did read one of my articles and did understand them, I'm not sure that any other psychologists have read them or understood them. So, you know, they're not really, you know, if you raise my name as a psychologist, they wouldn't have heard of me. But most of my stuff appears in, well, I've got a few articles in the British Journal of Special Education. I've got a couple in Disability and Society. So these are much more disability scholars, critical disability studies kind of area, which seems to be much more open to this. But this would, I think, underline my personal view is that we should be shifting the discussion to sociology. It shouldn't really exist in the realm of psychology because psychology doesn't help us. If anything, I think it's part of the problem. I don't think it's part of the solution. Are you saying that dyslexia doesn't exist in the form that we know it as? Yeah, basically. Which is why I said we need to separate the two. And why I stress that I'm dyslexic myself. I mean, this is a comparative case. It's not the same. I'm not saying it's the same. It's a comparative case. Think how race and gender were constructed a hundred years ago. That doesn't mean that there weren't women and there weren't black people. It just means they were constructed very, very differently. They were medicalized. Well, I think dyslexia has been medicalized and psychologized, however you should put it. And I don't think dyslexia as a concept helps us much. For a concept to be of any use, it's going to help us. I don't think it helps us. I think it gets in the way. We end up sometimes self oppressing. Dyslexics exist. Our difficulties exist. But put it this way. This is this is an example of a thought experiment. Say you've got three guys, right? One's dyslexic. Sorry, one's severely dyslexic. One's mildly dyslexic and one isn't. Right? And they get in a time machine and bear in mind, it is a thought experiment so you can have whatever you like in a thought experiment. They get in a time machine, they go back to the 17th century. Well, the guy who's mildly dyslexic isn't really hasn't got any issues anymore because he's meeting social norms of literacy. There's no difficulty. You know, he ceased to be in effect dyslexic. The guy who's severely dyslexic still got literacy issues, but they're not as bad. The guy who's not dyslexic is not affected either way. They then get in the time machine and go to a far future where the norms of literacy have gone up. Expectations of literacy have gone up. Attitudes to literacy has hardened and become even more awkward than they are now. Right? When they get out of the time machine, the guy who wasn't dyslexic is now dyslexic. Do you see what I mean when I say, well, where's the dyslexia? The answer is it was never there. The dyslexic was there and the dyslexic is defined by the societal context that they're in. But I'm not really sure that dyslexia is helping as much there. And if you go back to Barbara Riddick's idea of the social model of dyslexia, her argument, part of her argument was that dyslexia is a phonological deficit. Well, okay, maybe. But in a given time and culture, somebody's othered and discriminated by that, by how that impacts them. But the obvious question is, okay, you've got somebody with a phonological deficit. If you go to a time and a place where they're not othered and discriminated at because of that deficit, do they cease to be dyslexic? Or if you take them, or if you take somebody who isn't dyslexic and put them in a place where they are, either by the school norms and difficulties with literacy, or where was the dyslexia? This is the really problematic stuff. This is where people really got to think about it. They've really got to problematise it. And it's very uncomfortable because we grow up, certainly in my experience, I was fighting for, my mother especially, was fighting for the acknowledgement of the dyslexia diagnosis.

And then obviously our football stuff, all our culture stuff as well. And we're gonna have a big announcement on this podcast on Thursday about an upcoming show you might not be expecting. Coming up in this pod, I'm gonna talk about the Clippers trading for James Harden at the top and why I thought it was a huge mistake. And then our old friend Mike Lombardi, we're gonna talk about the trade deadline in the NFL as well as what team that seemingly looks like their season's almost over might actually jump in the second half of the year. And then last but not least, we're gonna talk Italian movies and Italian TV shows because why not? This is a fun podcast. First, our friends from Pearl Jam. ["PURL JAM"] All right, I'm taping this on Tuesday before the Clippers game on Tuesday night. The Clippers traded for James Harden late night. They tried to do this as late as possible at night when the most possible people were asleep because they were embarrassed by this trade. And they should be because they're the Clippers. They haven't made the finals ever in the history of the franchise, dating back to Buffalo in 1970, talking five and a half decades of bad luck, terrible injuries, mismanagement. We had the Donald Sterling piece of it. We had load management. And in the last couple of years, they've had some of the worst playoff losses of the 21st century. And now they're trading for a guy who's quit on his last three teams. So they decided, you know what, we'll do this in the middle of the night on the East Coast at least. So we'll take the least amount of slack. They were bidding against nobody. There's 30 teams in the league. One of them had James Harden. 28 other teams were like, we're good. And the Clippers said, you know what, we need this guy. We'll still be not nearly as good as Denver, but if we do this, maybe we could lose in either round two or round three, maybe? I just feel like they don't have any draft picks left for the rest of the decade. So they basically traded three picks for James Harden. The worst one was a 2028 unprotected first. Why do this now? Why do this for a team with no other offers? Why bid against yourself? And why not just wait? If you know you're trading basically two and a half picks plus all these expirings they had, why not wait? The league, I don't know if you've watched it the first week, the league is more talented and more loaded than it's ever been, probably in 30 years. And there's a really, really, really good chance that a couple teams that thought they were gonna be good are not gonna be good. Like for instance, Memphis is 0 -4. Or is Memphis gonna go 25 and 57? Probably not. But there's gonna be a couple teams that are just way worse than they expected. And guess what happens after Thanksgiving and in December and in January? Those teams panic. Guys become available. Like what if Toronto is bad? What if they're like, you know what, Pascal Siakam, this just isn't working for us. What if Chicago, who's already had two team meetings, I think, in three games, what if they decide to put Zach Levine on the table? Like you just don't know. What you do know now is that there was only one team bidding for James Harden and the Clippers ended up with him anyway. The other thing, if you're giving up this much for one guy, I better know that I have a chance to actually win the title. And I just don't feel like they do. I went to the game Sunday night. Kawhi, he looks fine. He looks fine. Does he look like the Kawhi from the mid -2010s? No. Does he look like the guy from 2019 Toronto? He does not. He looks like an older playing himself back in the shape version of Kawhi. And if that's your best player, that's just not gonna be enough this year. The Celtics are too good. Denver is too good. Milwaukee has Giannis and Dame. Phoenix has a ton of scoring. Golden State's gonna be really good. They're still not in the mix. So that was my first issue. The second one, who are you getting? Who are you getting in this trade? Where you're getting I .S. Quinn on three teams. You're getting the most disappointing playoff star this century, literally this century. And there's no other person you can put in there. There's nobody who has even half of the qualifications from a playoff disappointment standpoint that this guy does. Zach Lowe came on the Book of Basketball podcast, I think in 2019, we did a James Harden podcast. And in that podcast, which was four years ago, called him the Karl Malone of guards. And I was immediately the most jealous I've ever been of a comparison. Since then, he had the 2020 bubble flame out. Then they had in 2022, the Miami series, which he sucked in. And then in 2023, the Celtic series, this guy, it's an all time resume. And the Clippers who are just playoff futility through and through for the entire franchise history were like, that's the guy. That's the guy that can take the lovable loser Clippers over the top, James Harden. He slows you down. He needs the ball all the time. The Clippers now have Paul George, who succeeds the most when he has the ball. Koulai Leonard, who has perennially succeeded the most when he has the ball. Russell Westbrook, who loves to either have the ball or crash the boards. And now Harden, who needs the ball. See four guys who need the ball. Then Norm Powell comes in, he needs the ball. Bones Holland comes in, he needs the ball. Are we playing with three balls now? No, we're gonna still play with one. James Harden can't guard anybody. That seems relevant. He hasn't played defense in four years.

The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix
A highlight from Clippers Land Harden & Grizzlies Injury Woes
"He's not having to go and You know d up CJ McCollum for example or somebody of that ilk so I think he's gonna be able to To do this pretty regularly And I it had to but I was watching between that first and second quarter like just seeing how calm Golden State was not having to like rush back in like Steph Curry or rush back in Draymond Green or one of their starters you can play Chris Paul and Four reserves and do what they did I think in that stretch They were like plus six between the minute Steph Curry went out and the minute Steph Curry went back on the floor came back on the floor so Rowan I just think this is a You know this has the potential to to me I didn't know if the wars were gonna be better with Chris Paul because Jordan Poole You know did have his moments, and he's an improving scorer and all that stuff But you know this version of Chris Paul if the Warriors stay healthy with their their starting lineup It's a better fit than Jordan Poole is for it's not just a moving one long -term contract for a shorter one It's a better fit than Jordan Poole was I Agree, and I just think it makes everyone's life easier Including Chris Paul. He's still averaging over eight assists a game, which is kind of crazy Right now right now. He's at around roughly 30 minutes a night Which would be a career low, and I'm willing to bet that gets even lower. Yeah, it's just It makes too much sense again. I'm interested to see if he's closing alongside Chris Paul In these closing lineups, I mean it could be moody moody has been fantastic long time in guys I mean yeah, yes as long as I curry could be moody could be comingo So I'm so interested to see who closes because I don't think they're gonna go the Draymond Looney look All the time, but It's a it's a good problem for them to have right now because the time by the way I love that you know even with clay out Steve Kerr put moody in the starting lineup like yeah This is now Chris Paul's role like he's yeah, I'm not gonna jerk him around in and on the lineup You know maybe there's a long -term injury you put him right, but just for short -term stuff You're gonna start somebody else and keep Chris Paul in that spot I think it's only the more time he spends in that role the more comfortable. He's going to be the better. He's gonna be Plus 1 ,300 then plus 1 ,300 that's crazy That's crazy. Who was the who the frontrunners for six man like a manual quickly like I mean It's like the problem is it just always goes to guys who score a lot But it you know, I think it'll be incumbent on they'll be like a hearing kind of touch. Yes They'll be like a nostalgia vote first Yeah They're like top three and Chris Paul's like up there giving you 13 I know seven and five and I think that the like the same way that it took a while for Cy Young winners where you were getting guys that you know, was it Felix? Hernandez one year that had Like he went like 13 and 12 and won the Cy Young and it was kind of threw everybody off That he did or it didn't throw everybody off There were a lot of the new wave kind of new age guys that you know baseball I've always thought was ahead of basketball as far as the way analytics are used and I feel like we're just starting to see that turn with Basketball guys where that have an element of defense to their game I don't know It'll probably still take a while but like the Lou Williams prototype May not win the award for the next 10 years the way it's been for the last 10 or 15 or like Jamal Crawford and god bless him Like I think we all have been fans of him over the course of his career and and stuff but I think that it's starting to shift and I think Brock didn't quickly were kind of of that ill to have like guys that play some defense They put up numbers, too That's where I'm saying and I think quite frankly Rohan pointed it out If Chris Paul at times is not out there as part of their ending five That's the sort of thing I'd see is potentially cutting into his argument of it's a team that is really loaded Also on the wing sometime, you know Just where if he's not part of that that closing five does that hurt his case if he's hurt Because he's Chris Paul and he's older and misses a couple weeks does that hurt his case if someone like quickly is playing 80 games and Scoring more than him and plays really good defense.

Just things that have jumped out to us. And then Peter Schrager is gonna come on and talk about the NFL. Do we have a best team? What are we noticing through seven weeks? What can we expect in week eight that will lead to million dollar picks? And that is today's podcast. Let's bring in our friends from Pearl Jam. Here we go. All right, we're taping this. It's almost 10 o 'clock on Thursday night, Pacific time. Rob Mahoney is here from The Ringer NBA and showing TheRinger .com. We stayed up late because these were two good games. We've had three straight days of very entertaining basketball and we gotta start with the biggest story. Kelly Oubre in the Sixers. What a signing that was, he looks great. No, we just watched LeBron versus the Suns. LeBron's 29 minute limit I think is out the window. He played the whole fourth quarter. And then made the two big head down just going to the basket plays at the end. But biggest thing that's jumped out to you in the last three days is what? Lakers wise or just in general? In general. I think a lot of these teams that we expect to be really good clearly have some assembly required. And the Lakers are one of those teams. I think we saw that from the Bucks and the Sixers tonight too. We're seeing it certainly with the first days of the Victor Webinama experience. Everyone is getting up to speed into their rhythms, trying to understand how all these new pieces fit together. Not revelatory for the opening days of the season to feel that way, but I think even some of the stuff that personally I thought was going to be seamless, like the Giannis, Dame pick and roll, there's some kinks in it that they're going to have to figure out over time. Lakers I thought were the one that surprised me on that one because I thought they were one of the teams that were going to have the advantage coming in. You think about last year's team compared to this year's team. It doesn't seem like Reeves is involved enough either game that, I don't want to say he's an afterthought, but it just felt like he was more in the mix in the playoffs last year. And I liked what Schroeder did for them last year and he was good on Toronto last night and really fit in with what they did. So they're going to have to figure out that Vincent D 'Lo thing. Wood was playing crunch time, which I was really surprised. Did you think we'd be getting this much Christian Wood? I thought that was like a flyer for them. Guarding Kevin Durant on some possessions, wild stuff. But if nothing else, we can trust that when Christian Wood is out there, he will be Christian Wood. In these uncertain times, we can always fall back on that. He certainly had his fair share of like black hole kind of possessions in this game, but he also does play into the Lakers advantages in terms of their length, right? Their size against a team like Phoenix, they're just going to be able to out muscle, get to rebounds, get to balls that they can't get to. So that part of it paid off, I thought in terms of just like having another big out there and certainly the Anthony Davis experiment continues as far as like, do you want more size with him? Do you want to play small with him? There's always that internal question because he seems a little reluctant to do it on a full -time basis, but I'm sure Christian Wood's going to get his shots. I mean, clearly Jackson Hayes is going to get some shots in the rotation to be a meaningful part of the Lakers, the mix there for the Lakers. So I don't know. I think Darvin Ham has a lot of questions to figure out, including the one you listed with Austin Reeves, which is like, who has the ball? Who's initiating for us? Who is involved on a possession to possession basis? Because this game, this was a lot of D 'Angelo Russell, and it was a lot of a better version of D 'Angelo Russell than maybe we saw the other night, but it still feels like a lot. 33 minutes for him tonight. Yeah, Reeves, seven shots, one assist. And I thought all of his usage stuff was going to go up, but it seems like it drifted Russell's way. The other thing I was surprised, I thought Rui was going to be a bigger part of this team. I only played 12 minutes, but I haven't changed my thought on them. They're just such a big, problematic team. And if you're the Suns and you're feeling good after that Warriors game, right? And the Warriors, no Draymond, they were able to overpower them a little on the boards. The two centers had 22. And then tonight you see the flip side of the use of Nurkic experience, where it's like, you're getting zero room protection and you're getting somebody who's just going to be confused anytime somebody is coming off a pick. Basically Lebron at the end of the game just said, I'm going to go attack that guy. Yeah, I'm going to go attack that guy right there. Durant was better tonight, at least for the first three quarters that he looked on Tuesday night. It was really cool just seeing those guys on a basketball court after all these years. As I get older, I'm older than you, but just think like, man, this goes way back now. We're talking mid 2000s was the first time these two guys played basketball against each other and it's still going on. So that was in a cool way kind of lingering over this game. I was enjoying that one. How do you think Durant looks in terms of being a 35 year old guy who they gave up three first rounders and two swaps and Mikhail Bridges and Cam Johnson for? It feels like a slightly loaded question. Yeah. He's looked good. And certainly as you said, the first three quarters of this game looked more than good enough. I think the problem was just like this version of the Suns like felt very James Harden is hurt and Kyrie Irving won't get the shot. Nets, you know, just like Kevin Durant and a bunch of like - I blocked that net out of my mind. I think a lot of us have tried to, but you know, him with a lot of like serviceable workaday role players can get you so far. But as you saw on this one, against a really good defensive team like the Lakers in the fourth quarter, they can just shut the water off. And this is where, you know, I'm nervous about the Suns for a variety of reasons. I think if it was just the defense or just the depth or just the injury risk of their core guys, I would feel better. But it's all of the above all the time. And that's going to put Durant in some games like this one. It's going to put Yusef Nurkic in positions like this one where all of a sudden he's triggering your offense because you don't really have a default point guard out there. And sometimes the value of having a point guard in your rotation, I don't think it's really going to matter when Beal and Booker and Durant are playing together. Those guys can all handle and play make and do everything they need to do. But in a game like this, where two of those guys are out, sometimes it helps to just be able to run some offense that doesn't have to involve Kevin Durant pounding the rock through pick and roll. Yeah, 28 shots for him today. 13 including, and then 13 free throws. He played 39 minutes and was also playing the five in stretches. And this is game two. They had to basically try to unlock 2007 Texas Longhorns Durant. That's the last guy I want to be throwing miles on, maybe in the entire league other than LeBron. Cause he's, you know. That's going to be true for Booker and Beal too, right? Like when any of these guys are out, those three, whoever's left is going to have to play huge minutes or else you get into Grayson Allen and Drew Eubanks are playing like a massive role in your rotation. And I like those guys. I like Drew Eubanks. Maybe not like tamper and lose a second round pick like Drew Eubanks, like some teams do, but. I'd lose 50K for him. Maybe not a second round pick. It's a little steep. Yeah. The other game, Milwaukee Philly. So no Harden. I wish there was a way to just mute the entire Harden story of all coverage for it. Anything online, anything on Twitter, all conversations. I just don't want to hear it anymore. And I don't think he has any interest in playing. And I just think, just tell us when he gets traded. Their best chance now, now that the, especially the Clippers last night looked great.

Six Minutes
A highlight from S3 E49: Time for Roommate Drama
"There are kids in this world who are different. Special. They go to school in a place you can't find on a map. And they're about to get a new classmate. Key. So, keep rowing, Casey, and be grateful it's a nice day out. It's Florida. A nice day could turn into a torrential rainstorm in the blink of an eye. Are you always such a downer? Why do you care? Because this mission is hard enough without your incessant negativity. Big words, big mad. Usually when people see the worst possible outcome in a situation, it's because - Experience has proven them right. Or experience has, I don't know, hardened their hearts. My heart is not hardened. You sure about that? You seem to have no problem lying to me and my family, taking advantage of our worries and fears. You wouldn't do that if you had people you cared about. Or maybe it's because I had someone I cared about. I promised we are going to find Mila. Then you never have to see or speak to me or Brinley again. See, now that makes me happy. Actually, can we stop rowing a second? I want to see if I can get a signal out here. I'm really worried about Bernie. You won't get a signal now. We're in it. In what? It. You can't feel that? The shift in the atmosphere? Every hair on my arm is standing on end. Yeah, I feel it now. Let's see how it affects Hovey if I turn him on. Well, I guess that means we're almost there. I've tried, C -A -S -E -E, K -A -S -E -Y, C -A -Y -S -E -Y, I mean, unless you guys can come up with a spelling of Casey, we haven't tested yet. Oh, I know. C -A -S -E -I -G -H. How did I miss that one? Yeah, no. There's no record in the Headmaster's computer of your old roommate ever having been a student at Elixir Academy. This makes no sense. Maybe she wasn't a - Someone's coming. Hurry, hide. Remy, over here. Cybot, the download coming. Headmaster? I'm working on it, but it's a lot of data. It's me, Dr. Sargsy. Come on. Are you here? Cybot's not done yet. Dude, she's gonna walk in here any second. She's right, Cybot. We gotta go. Over here. In the closet. Headmaster, are you in here? Hm. Security dead. Yes, I'm going to need security at the Headmaster's home. Right away, ma 'am. She's gone. We'd better get back to the boat. Or, maybe you two get back to the boat, and I wait here for the Headmaster. Ben, are you sure you're feeling up to this? Well, so far, no sleepwalking, so that's good. Do you remember being down here in the auditorium? Sort of, but it's like it was a dream. I would have come by myself, but I can't do this alone. Do what? Well, that. Whoa! Dude, is that - I thought maybe we could take it to Brinley and the others. You mean steal it? I prefer borrow. How would we even get it out of here? Perhaps we slide it into the water and float it up to the surface. You realize our chances of being caught are - I know. I just thought it could give us some answers, possibly help Brinley. You're right. We gotta try. Good man. Come over here. I believe if we both get behind it and give it a good push - What are you guys doing? Kazu! I've been looking all over for you, mate. What are you doing down here, Jude? Ben and I were just exploring. This is how I got here, to Elixir Academy. We figured. I want to go home, wherever home is. Can you send me back? I don't know, Kazu. Why won't you help me? Why won't anyone help me? Easy, buddy. We're friends. No, we're not. I don't know you either. I understand. I feel weird. I thought I was remembering something, but now... Now I can't remember anything! Oh no. Stay back, Pen. I'll take care of this. What's that mean? Take care of what? It's all right, Kazu. I'll explain everything. Stay away from me! I don't know you! You're for Jude. He pulled something out of his pocket. It's just a screwdriver. Send me back home, or else. Kazu, I know this must all be very confusing and scary, but we're your friends. We can help you. I said get back! Casey, Remy, you'd better go before security gets here. Yeah, we're not leaving you. Yeah, we're not leaving you. This isn't your fight. It kind of feels like my fight. Remy? Mine too. You're both dummies. You know that? Right back at you, Pasternak. Oh. Is someone coming back, Saibot? No. I... I was scanning the files as they downloaded it. The last folder was housing, including roommate assignments. Can you look up Renly's roommate before me? Yes. And her name wasn't Casey. Am I imagining it, or is the water starting to get really choppy? Keep growing. That's your answer? Feels like we're fighting a current. What was that? It felt like seismic activity, but there are no fault lines in Florida. In fact, it has the lowest tectonic activity of any state other than North Dakota. Did you ever feel anything like that on Elixir Key? Maybe. I wish I could reach Casey. She was investigating the activity surrounding the island. The other Casey. I got that. Confusing, right? Two people with the same name? Yeah, well, it's not even my name. Wait, so you made up a fake identity? I didn't make up anything. Casey is a nickname. K -C. They're her initials. Casey? What do they stand for? Katie. My real name is Katie. Or at least that's what they told me when I first arrived at Elixir Academy. According to the database, the letter K stands for... Renly? Are you there? Pen? What's wrong? It's Jude. He's hurt really bad. If we don't get him help right away, I'm afraid he's not going to make it. It's starting. GZM shows. Imagination amplified.

The Financial Guys
A highlight from The Ongoing Conflict: Targeted Massacre and War Crimes with Sean Parnell
"Beware of politicians who you agree with all the time, because 100%, they are lying to you. Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests and my fellow citizens, America's comeback starts right now, from the land of the free and the brave, I love my country, they can't take. Welcome back, Mike Speraza here in studio today, I have a special guest now, Sean Parnell, a combat veteran, a New York Times bestselling author, and host of Battleground on Red Voice Media. Sean, thank you so much for joining us. Hey Mike, thanks for having me. I'm going to get into your show in a little bit when we finish, because I want to hear about your show and all the good stuff that you're doing, but first I want to talk about this Israeli -Hamas conflict that we've seen now for the better part of the last two, two Pretty sad stuff all around, seeing what's going on to the people of Israel, the innocent people of Palestine too, there's innocent people getting hurt, killed, treated very poorly in that region, but I want to start with your thoughts today. Today we are recording this, Joe Biden is in Israel right now, your thoughts on him going out there, and again, I'm going to give you my thoughts quick, I don't know Sean how this guy is going to do any good there, he can barely talk to the people of America in I can't imagine it going very well when he's sitting there with a little reader. Yeah, there's a reason why, you know, when Joe Biden is giving a scripted speech, people say that the teleprompter writer or the teleprompter itself is the most powerful entity in the world at that specific moment, and it's because you're exactly right, Mike, Joe Biden can barely string together a coherent sentence, he can barely walk up a small flight of stairs, I often say on the show that he's just an animated corpse, I mean, it's like every morning they dip the guy in the Lazarus pit, and it's less effective as every day of his presidency goes on, and so it doesn't fill me with confidence that he's going into one of the most complex geopolitical situations in the world, and has been one of the most complex geopolitical situations in the world for the past hundred years, so in fact, as we've seen so far, it means it looks like almost all of our Arab partners in the area have canceled meetings with Joe Biden based on the propaganda that Israel hit a hospital, which of course now we know is not the case, and of course we saw the news this morning of Biden in a meeting with Netanyahu, I mean, honestly, Mike, just rambling about stuff that was just totally incoherent and didn't make any sense, he trailed off into the distance, and so it's not an overstatement to say, and it really upsets, I hate when members of Congress and politicians are like, World War III's on the horizon, it's like, isn't that a commentary on the world that we live in when people think World War III, oh my god, it's just a political talking point, but it is true that with this guy at the helm, it's very, very clear that our enemies see this and are taking full advantage of it, and that's why you see all the chaos happening around the world. Yeah, and obviously this isn't the first bit of chaos we've seen over the last three years, there's plenty behind it as well, and here's my thing too, like, the Joe Biden thing, like, I get it, if it's like a PR thing you gotta do, that's fine, but what's starting to really irritate me, Sean, is now we have people like my governor in New York, Kathy Hochul, that's like, I need to get to Israel and really meet with these folks, Kathy Hochul can't run New York State, what the hell is she gonna do in the Middle East? I mean, it's such a great point, and obviously New York has problems of its own, whether it's with Kathy Hochul or Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, you know, who, by the way, just in the past month said that Israel was gonna, or, I'm sorry, that New York City was gonna collapse because of the migrant crisis, goes to Mexico, meets with Mexican leaders, and then comes back and promptly say that we need to keep our borders open, so I don't know how those two statements exist in the same world, but I'll tell you, like, something that concerns me greatly, circling back, like, Jen Psaki -style to the Israeli -Gaza conflict and the tragedy that happened there, a couple things on that, and let's just walk through this at 30 ,000 feet. When Hamas attacked Israel, I say this often, Mike, but it's not, it is underselling it that that's, it does not do, it does a disservice to what happened to the Israelis by calling it an attack, because it wasn't an attack, it was a massacre, a targeted massacre of innocent men, women, children, elderly, Holocaust survivors, seriously, take a second and just really let that sink in. Somehow you survived the Holocaust, you're in your 90s, and now you're captured by Hamas and being taunted on camera for the world to see? That is evil incarnate, it's horrific, it should not happen in our world. I mean, they murdered, killed babies, they raped women, they paraded these women around the streets, bleeding as if they're some sort of trophies, they took women, children, babies as hostages, they're using those hostages as human shields right now, I mean, all of these things, every single one of these things is considered a war crime of the highest order, you know, so Israel responds, right, and by the way, all these Republican politicians come out and immediately they start saying that Israel has a right to defend itself, but I think Republicans need to really hone their messaging here, because of course as we saw yesterday with the propaganda about the hospital, the public opinion fight in the messaging is critically important, it's not enough just to say Israel has a right to defend itself. Well, what does that mean, right? As a military tactical term, it means that Israel has a right, you know, to fire a few indirect fire attacks or bomb a few Hamas targets in Gaza, and that, hey, look, it's proportional, right? There should be a ceasefire now, and that's what you've heard from Democrat politicians taking advantage of the rhetoric that Republicans use with the whole phrase proportional response and ceasefire, okay? But what Republicans have to get comfortable saying is that Israel has a right to eradicate and destroy Hamas. I mean, and the reason for that is, is that Israel has proposed and extended an olive branch to Hamas into the Palestinian Authority multiple times in the past 75 years and proposed multiple two -state solutions with the Palestinian authorities, and Hamas have of course rejected each and every time. And so there comes a point in time where you have to say enough is enough. And I'd also say this, you know, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, they demand a two -state solution, and what that means is they demand a country of their own. Well, if you're evaluating the potential of a country, right, and you're saying you're just like asking questions, and you're like, what's the charter, like, what's the mission of your country? And the number one mission of that country is to commit genocide against your neighbor. Maybe you don't deserve a country. I'm sorry, maybe you're not entitled to that. So the idea that the Palestinian Authority and Hamas are entitled to a country is I reject that premise right off the bat. So my point is, is that Israel made a commitment after that attack to go after Hamas and destroy them. And I said very publicly that two things need to happen in order for them to accomplish that mission. They have to have the military capability to do it, Israel has that, they have to have the tactical flexibility and the space and the freedom, which means free from international pressure to do it. And that is where Israel is going to have problems, and that is where the Biden administration has done everything they can to hamstrung the Israeli Defense Force in this way. Israel was poised to invade Gaza after surgical strikes on Hamas on day one. They were right on the border, and the Biden administration has done everything that they can to delay that, knowing full well that every day they delay, the percentage of Israeli casualties that will happen if a ground invasion actually happens goes up exponentially. Right now, and this is just military doctrine speaking, Mike, right now the Israelis are poised to take anywhere because of the delay between 33 % and 60 % casualties in the devastation that surrounds Gaza and what they call military operations on urban terrain. That's not Sean Marnell talking, that's U .S. military doctrine. Casualties will be high because Hamas has had time to set booby traps and place snipers, delaying complex ambushes, to put in IEDs, I mean, it's just going to be treacherous as hell. And ultimately, that's why I believe Biden is in Israel to delay that invasion further because Biden made his objective very, very clear, Mike, that he does not want Israel to invade Gaza. He said that on 60 Minutes on Sunday, so here we are. So I think what's frustrating for me, I'm a person that's never had military experience, so I'm speaking to the likes of, we should be trusting the people that have military experience, right? We should be talking to more people like you. I interviewed Joe Kent last week, too. People who have had experience, great guy. We should be listening to those types of people, not Joe Biden, not Rashida Tlaib, people that actually know the battlefield and what's going on out there, and Joe Kent said exactly what you just said, Sean, they're going to booby trap everything. And this is not combat like you see in a movie or something, he's like, this is the most dangerous of combat that you're going to face going into buildings, which you have no idea who's in or out of there, right? You have no idea if it's a bomb, if it's people, if it's hostages, you have no idea. And the level of complexity of it is off the charts, and that's what bothers me. We have all these talking heads on TV, on social media, everywhere that know nothing about it and don't care to, so they can just push a narrative. It drives me insane. You're exactly right, Mike. And I'll tell you just for your listeners, for your viewers, why it was critically important from a tactical standpoint and to minimize civilian casualties that Israel invade immediately after their airstrikes. There's something in the military called echelonment of fires. I've done this, I've fought in this terrain hundreds, if not thousands of times in Afghanistan. And the goal with echelonment of fires is you hit with your biggest bombs first, as you're moving as infantry, me is moving to the objective. And as you get closer to the objective, you diminish your firepower. So you go from maybe an airstrike to artillery. And then as you get even closer, you go from artillery to mortars. And once you get even closer to the objective, you turn off the mortars and then infantry hits the objective. The reason for that is you don't want to give your enemy even a second to breathe. And so every second that you delay gives them a second to consolidate, reorganize, and fortify their defenses and harden their defenses to make an invasion in Gaza, in this specific tactical example, almost completely untenable. And here's the deal, Joe Biden knows that, and there are people in our military that are telling him that, but he's just completely blowing it off. And so he's blowing it off and he's talking out of both sides of his mouth saying, is Israel has a right to defend itself while simultaneously freeing up $6 billion in sanction free money to Iran, who's then using that money to export terror around the world, crazy. And what scares me even as sometimes more than this is these people, you know, our, our American troops, they don't want to die when they go to war. They know that's a risk, right? But they, these guys on the other side with Hamas, they, they like praise dying out there and blowing up people and not caring what happened. And you're facing a much different enemy than I think a lot of American people, especially these Gen Z kids and millennials understand, like, this is not like love wins out there. This is the scariest of the scary, the most dangerous of the most dangerous. And you know, I'm going to move to my next point here with, with Rashida Tlaib, this, this attack on the hospital, I'll call it an attack, I guess, but on the hospital yesterday ended up being what it looks like right now from the actual data and evidence to be a, a, a, a weapon used by either Hamas or somebody like Hamas, a terrorist group that was misfired or shot there on purpose. I don't know, but here's my problem. We have American politicians coming out that moment, Sean, saying, you see, Israel did this. They killed, you know, innocent people. They went after a hospital. That's really dangerous. Is it not? It's incredibly dangerous. And not just that, you know, first of all, it was, it was strangely all at the exact same time that that hospital was hit. And I'll get into the tactics of how that happened in a second, but the exact time that the associated press, the Washington post, the New York times and Democrat politicians all echoed the same thing. They elevated terrorist propaganda. And that's exactly what it was. Terrorist propaganda, because who fired that rocket. Now it looks like it was Islamic Jihad, which is a state department declared terrorist group. Okay. They elevated terrorist propaganda and they immediately blamed Israel. And what happened is that that caused a chain reaction around the world, caused violence and uprisings and U .S. and Israeli embassies all throughout the Middle East. The blame for that, and there needs to be accountability for this, but the blame for that should be laid at the feet of these fake news media outlets and these journalists who are not just the enemy of the people, they're, they're an enemy of global stability. There needs to be accountability for that. And especially these Democrat members of Congress, I mean, why they haven't been expelled from You can bet that if it were Republicans doing irresponsible things like this, the Democrats would remove them from committees. If they had the majority and do everything they can to expel them from Congress, here's what kills me though. It's so anti -America in every stretch of the imagination. These people are the most anti -America humans of all time. You should not be representing our country if you hate the country. And that's what the Rashida Tlaib, the Elon, Omar's AOC, they hate America, Sean. They should not be in politics. I mean, I completely agree. And, and, and, and just look, if you look at the facts of yesterday's attacks, I want to make sure I touch on this. So I think like 30 to 40 % of rockets fired by these terrorist organizations from Gaza into Israel fall short. And that's because, I mean, people were wondering the Democrats are out there like AOC talking about collective punishment and how they're, how they're the Israelis cut off water. But the reason why the Palestinians don't have water is that Hamas dug up their water pipes and uses them as field rocket launchers. And that's why these rockets fall short. And that's also why the Palestinians don't have water right now because, because of Hamas and the moral responsibility for, for civilians caught in the middle on the side of Gaza and the civilians murdered in Israel is because of Hamas and not the Israeli defense force. Where does this end? Because they have not gone in yet. The IDF has not gone in yet. I would assume, and to your point, I would hope soon, because as the days go on, it gets more and more dangerous, but when do they go in and then how does this conflict start and finish? I don't know where to set, where to go from here. Yeah, it's a good question and it's a complicated answer. And I think, you know, is what, what the Israeli military, along with their, you know, is, you know, Bibi Netanyahu is going to have to decide and they're going to have to evaluate what's called the tactical risk and balance it with the mission objective. And what I mean by that is if the mission objective is to destroy Hamas, you have to look at the tactical risks and assess what the cost of that mission would mean for the Israeli military. And right now, 33 % to 60 % casualties. If you're a military commander in Israel, I mean, that's tough, man. That's tough to say that you're going to, you know, casualty doesn't necessarily mean death, but it could mean, you know, a severe injury or wounds that then the Israelis are going to have to take care of. And it's just, it's just a real tough decision. They're going to have to make that decision on their own, but here's the deal. If it ends up, if Israel does not destroy Hamas, the cycle of violence will continue. And you can bet that Iran is going to continue to fund and export terror around the world. They're going to fund Hezbollah. They might even attack Israel from the north, which that really scares me because if Iran and Hezbollah attack Israel from the north, it triggers the war powers act. It actually, it actually complies us by law to respond, uh, to respond to that invasion of, of an ally, which would be an escalatory possibility. That would just be a very, very scary thing, especially when you consider that the war in Ukraine seems to be going on in perpetuity, along with us taxpayer dollars, going to fund Ukrainian pensions with no end in sight and no mission. You add to that a war, essentially in the middle East against the Islamic world, because the war continues to escalate and if American troops find themselves dragged into the conflict, you can bet that that will galvanize the Islamic world against us. And so it's something, you know, like, and again, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence that Joe Biden's at the helm trying to navigate these really tough diplomatic times. So it's, we'll see, we'll see. That's exactly what I was going to end with there. Could there be a worst leader for us and really the world, right? There's not a worst leader for the world right now that a guy, you know, you mentioned before I called weekend at Bernie's, cause that's what we're dealing with here. Like we're just moving them around where, you know, uh, he's doing as he's told literally, it's just not very good.

And he's been with The Ringer pretty much since the beginning. But it's nice when somebody works their ass off on something and it actually pays off. So I'm glad people like it. Check out the first episode. It's not that long. It's really well done. And you will definitely 100 % enjoy it. Okay. Let's bring in the cuz. Let's talk some football. Let's talk some wound licking with some bets, some Eagles, all kinds of things. It's all next. First, our friends from Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam! All right. We are taping this. It is 830 Pacific time on Sunday night. Cousin Sal is here as always. He's wearing a nice, fresh Oregon hat that I think you probably bought probably this weekend. You went to visit your son? Smells very new. Yeah, I went to visit my son. I'm not happy with the way my hair looks. And I think the hat's an improvement. So what am I going to do? It looks great. We just watched Dolphins Eagles just now. And at the same time, Rangers Astros was happening. And it really felt like, I don't know, it felt like a great October sports night there. And then Texas blew it open in the end. But next week, we'll have basketball. There will be baseball going on. It'll really feel like October. The Eagles though. So right as I start sending texts to Eagles people in my life wondering what's going on with Hurts and what's going on with this team, and then they just turn it on and they win by 14. It's weird. Eye test wise versus the stats and just looking at the standings and stuff. It's a team that doesn't seem like they have all their shit together. And yet it doesn't matter because they have so much talent. They can just kind of pick and choose. And then all of a sudden they win anyway. I know don't what other team in the NFL is like this. Do you see that too? Yeah, absolutely. And it's a bummer because I think you agree. The Dolphins are, I don't know, favorite team to watch if you have to cut everything else out. Best offense, so much going on, like dynamic, Tyreek Hill, anything. Tua. But when they play a game like this, when they go to Buffalo, they're just going to get beat in the trenches. And like what you said is it doesn't really matter if you're so physical, Philadelphia, offensively or defensively. And like Tua's getting swallowed up in the pocket on third and ones. And where Philadelphia could just run that tush push like it or not, it's going to move the chains every time. So, yeah, it sucks. Yeah. The less flashy team wins. And they happen to be in my favorite team's division. But that's what's going to happen in January. Ten turnovers for Hertz. He had eight off last year. There's times where, you know, like sometimes, and I don't know whether he's protecting his body or what's going on, but he'll kind of duck away from taking hits, which is smart. And then he'll have weird throws. And I texted Solak today during third quarter. I'm like, are we going to find out that Hertz has had like torn rib cartilage since week two or, you know, he doesn't look right sometimes. And then in the fourth quarter, all of a sudden looks great. And I don't really know what to make of it. And I can't get a feel for it. But on top of it, they have this tush push thing that in the big drive of the game, they're able to get two straight fourth and ones on their own side of the field. I know we, you and I have talked about it. You've talked about it incessantly. And at the same time, it feels like it is the most important NFL invention in the last five years, this play that nobody can stop ever at any point. If he does, nobody else can do it. I know it's weird. And we likened it to the Tom Brady thing. There was no reason why Tom Brady should convert fourth and one and a half every single time, you know, physically and everything else. But except they had their shit together, the Eagles, they really do. And if he does have cracked ribs, I hope it's from his own teammate, smashing them over the line of scrimmage there. Yeah, it was just wear and tear on the back of his body from several guys. Yeah. So they're performing the Heimlich on him like every eight minutes. So I guess if you're taking the takeaway from the Eagles is nice when they needed to have it, they're also supposed to win. But the AJ Brown piece of it, the fact that they traded, you know, a first round pick basically, and then they paid him. And I don't know, he's one of the four best receivers in the league now. Is he one of the three? He's somewhere on the shortest possible list. I have him on multiple fantasy teams, and it's gotten to the point where I'm just expecting 100 yards in a TD every game. But that turned out to be one of the better trades, I think, of the last 10 years. Just kind of took him from Tennessee. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that was ridiculous. And he is such a great possession receiver. And it's like, it's scary, too, because you'll forget about him, too. You probably put Justin Jefferson in the top three. And then every time Cousins drops back the pass or any snap, you're like, all right, this has to go to Jefferson. Otherwise, it's going to go for nothing out of this offense. And then eight tush pushes in a row. And then you see AJ Brown's like, oh, my God, I forgot about this guy. What? He's got 120 yards. It's nuts. So, yeah, dynamite. I like, yeah, there's like four different kind of catches he can make, too, which I think makes him stand out because they can throw those bubble screens. They can just put them right over the middle, like for seven, eight yards. It seems like whenever they want, they can send him deep down the sidelines, which he seems to love. And then that kind of deep over the middle with two guys on him and he can make plays anyway. But he he has, like, I think the biggest bag of any of the receivers right now. Yeah, personal. I don't know. I got these guys. Yeah. Yeah. I hate this team. I don't know. I don't even know what to say anymore. Like, you know, the Miami have what, 10 or 11 penalties? It's just like it's a it's like a mind fuck, too, when you play him, too, because you can't get out of a can't get out of your own way when you play against them. Kyle, don't turn on the tick tock camera for this. Has Philly replaced Boston for most interesting sports city? Like, look at all the shit they have going right now. Right. Right. They're they're about to make the World Series. They have this Eagles team that made the Super Bowl last year and it feels super relevant again, is definitely going to be a final 14 worst case scenario. And then they have this NBA team with this James Harden saga that God only knows how he's going to sabotage things over the next month. But and then you look at my team where my city where I have the the you know, we have a great NBA team, it looks like. And then other than that, completely forgettable across the board. I think Philly's kind of grabbed the mantle a little bit. I don't like it. I don't like it right now. That's not good. And it's not good for their fans because their fans are supposed to just hate the other team, not supposed to like their team. So it doesn't matter if their team is good. Right. Yeah, I don't know. It's a bummer. Although I'll say that they were in this position last year, too. Right. Phillies win the World Series. The Eagles win the Super Bowl. This has been this is the 2020s has kind of been the Philly decade. I don't like it. It's upsetting to me. And fortunately, the Sixers are it seems like they're going to go in the tank. But I got to say they have great crowds like the the Phillies playoff crowds are way up there. That's about as good of a baseball crowd as you're going to get. It really feels like if they can have like a do or die game or a must win game or a clincher at home, you feel like they're going to get it. And whatever happened with Bryce, you know, pretty special, like to sign that guy from another team and he becomes the signature athlete in your city. We had a little bit of that with Manny Ramirez, where we kind of took him from. We paid for it, but took him from Cleveland and he kind of became one of the symbols of that run. But pretty nuts that they just took him from another team and he became what he became. Yeah, it's a great crowd whenever they I mean, I thought the Rams crowd today was dynamite, too, against the Steelers. I thought they really showed up. It's really loud. Yeah, yeah, it's been proud to be from L .A. Yeah, I have a I know you don't want to talk about Phillies, so I'll move on. I have a Tyree question for you. What's your all time receiver list for receivers you've watched just where you're like, that guy's fucking amazing? Because for me, it was always Rice number one and Moss two and then a drop off. And then some people like Tio's three for me. I'm like, cool. Tio is like an absolute franchise murderer and was a huge head case and you couldn't trust him. And as the years pass, the stats will be great. All the fucking drama that he brought to every situation he's in, that stuff will kind of die off. But for me, I think Tyreek's unequivocally three now for me. Every single game, it just you just feel like he's going to have 250 yards as you're watching it, right? Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Unstoppable, Tyreek over Calvin Johnson, that type. Yeah, I think like where you would put him. Yeah, I think for me, he's definitely over Calvin Johnson. Michael Gallup is three, four. I'm trying to see where I would put these people. Yeah, I think you're right. I think you're right. I think he's got to be number three. Although if you look at like Antonio Brown, who's now a punch line, he had like six of the best seasons you'll ever see in a row. But but in terms of presence and being unstoppable, Rice, Moss, Tyreek Hill, it's a good three. That's how I feel. I think, you know, Sharp, I think, could have gotten there in the Packers way back when in the 90s. And then, you know, he hurt his neck and he basically only had like a six or seven year career. But I thought in the 90s, I thought other than Rice, he was the second best guy. Your guy, Irvin, was great. There's no question that team was loaded. We've had some good ones over the years, but Tyreek, the speed, how he just tilts the field over and over again, how scared the other team is of him. How much space he opens up for everybody else. I think he's three. I don't think he'll ever get over Moss or Rice for me, though. I'm trying to think who could pass him, though, now at three. I mean, we've put Justin Jefferson up there before. Now that we haven't seen him for a few weeks, we've kind of forgot about him in the right now. But Hill's done this now for, you know, six, what's it, six years since he's on the 18 Chiefs. I can't remember how many years he's been in the league, but yeah, he'll be stride for stride with two defenders. And then, like, if the ball hangs up there long enough, he's now seven, eight yards past them. Oh, I know who's number four. That's a nice little advantage. Pooka. He is? Guys, see that catch he made on the sideline today? It was pretty great. Before the Rams realized they were going against a force greater than any satanic force or anything, the Pittsburgh Steelers. You want to talk about that? Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it. So they're four and two. I've watched every play of all six games. I have no idea how they're four and two, but they've hit the point now where I feel like they're going to win when there's no signs. Like that guy missed the extra point today for the Rams and made it nine, three instead of 10, three. I'm like, oh, here we go. Steelers come down. All of a sudden it's 10, nine. They have five first downs because they get the TJ Watt, you know, the pick that sets up the touchdown. And you're just like, here we go. They're doing this. And we've seen this before because this was the Eli Manning. Danny Heifetz was the first person to point this out. This was the Eli Manning recipe for years and years that I can't believe that team's winning. What the fuck just happened? He only made two throws. How did he do it? They're four and two. I totally believe in them. And I feel like they're going to go 12 and five and have a negative point differential. Well, the good thing is we're making money off them, right? We've been and we saw them. Plus, I mean, I thought they'd be favored last Sunday night. I thought they'd be favored, but they're not. So we're doing that thing, but also just taking them because the Steelers. But I found the gem and I gave it out on ringer wise guys, Rams first half Steelers to win the game 10 to one. You know, I'm positive that their bullshit is going to pay dividends and 10 to one. I think it'll hit like three more times. Like you're right. That TJ Watt interception brings it down to the eight. We see some separation from Pickens on a receipt, like the little one drive you wait for all game and it happens. And then that terrible spot at the end, it didn't give him a chance. That that was beyond really big. McVeigh also probably should have had a timeout left. I know. But, you know, what is it important to be like, hey, listen, we could get this right, but we'd rather teach you a lesson, coach, to save your timeouts. Like, I don't, this, the spot thing bothers me more than missed pass interferences because it's an old man jogging eight yards and he has to see between 20 bodies. And then like, you know, he sticks his foot in the mud and says, here, this is like a surveyor from 1835. He's like, this is where your property in, sir. Like we got to put, there's a chip in the ball. Isn't there a chip in the ball? What's it for? It's funny that we figured out Wimbledon. We figured out we've in U .S. Open, we figured out how to measure serves immediately, whether they hit the line or not in football, which seems like it would be really easy to just have some sort of magnet that was attached to the chains. The other thing that was weird about that for the people who didn't see it, the Steelers did fourth and one, they had the lead. There's probably like a little more than two minutes left and they run the QB sneak play, kind of the Brady play where you, you kind of put your head down, but you go left. But he slipped and fell on his knee and his knee went down. And it wasn't one of those when you're watching it where you're like, oh, I wonder if he got it was like, you knew immediately, oh, he didn't get it. He slipped. And then they come in with the spot and then like, oh, he might have gotten it. And they did that. I couldn't believe it. And I'm rooting for the Steelers. But I was like, oh, my God, it's the worst spot of the year. I thought they deserved to win anyway. But but that was pretty tough for the Rams. We need some clarification. And I get it because McVeigh didn't have timeouts and it wasn't actually the two minute warning yet, even though it did wind to that after that. But is there a ref in the sky? Is there this guy in the sky or is this everything has to go back to New York? Like, I feel like we're told three different things. It's a bummer because that could have been overturned. But you're right. Ten to one we hit. Let's just keep doing it. You know, you know who else would have gotten that fourth one? Eli Manning. He would have fallen down a half foot in front and somehow would have gotten the spot. The Rams kicker was the MVP of this game for the Steelers. He missed two longer field goals. They were like 50 yard field goals, but he missed about them. Then he missed that extra point. And then Tomlin just, you know, he threw away the challenge. He screwed up a challenge, which is the Tomlin staple.

A highlight from Reflecting on Unbelief
"Today, we are going to really wrap up a major portion of the book of John. And you'll notice we still have nine chapters to go after this. And as a point of reference, this is the 50th message we have in the book of John, okay? Now listen, I was at a conference this week and there was a guy there who took three years or more to preach to the book of Romans. So, I don't feel so bad, okay? But just to give you an idea of where we are in the book of John, we're coming now to the end of the public ministry of Jesus. We began to see that at the end of last week and now today we'll see the full conclusion of that. Jesus is going to spend now a good portion of this time, of the Passion Week, with his disciples, informing and seeking to help their faith in him for the things that they're going to go through. So today at the end of John 12, we're looking at this idea of reflecting on unbelief. Because really that's what this is. This passage reflects on the reception that Jesus experienced there in Israel as he came as the Messiah. It was a, he experienced rejection, unbelief. You know, you always have working titles for things. My working title for this message was an autopsy of belief. We went with something a little less morbid, you know? Reflecting on the unbelief that permeated Israel. And we've seen that over, we've seen it all come to a head here in John chapter 12 in the Passion Week as people have their own ideas and ideals and fantasies about what the Messiah is and who, what he will do. And now as John kind of wraps everything up and shows us what he said, by the way, in John chapter one, he said, he came into his own and his own people did not receive him. And so it's almost like a funnel, right? Now John has funneled us down to this passage and says, look, I told you this is what was going to happen and here's how it ends in John 12 as Jesus, as the Passion Week continues. Look at John 12 verses 36 through 50, we'll actually pick up in the second part of verse 36 and read to the end of the chapter. When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him. So that the words spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled. Lord, who has believed what he heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe. For again, Isaiah said, he has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn and I would heal them. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless, many, even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees, they did not confess it. So that they would not be put out of the synagogue, for they love the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. And Jesus cried out and said, whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge. The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day, for I have not spoken on my own authority, but the father who sent me has himself given me a commandment, what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say, as the father has told me. Lord, we thank you for this time we have to open the word of God together today, to study it, to be challenged by it. Lord, we ask that today you would transform us by the power of your word. You would use your Holy Spirit in our hearts to illuminate, to convict us, to draw us to yourself. Lord, as we look at this reflection of unbelief today, our hearts are burdened by what we see, they're challenged by it. Lord, I pray that the one who hears this message today, who sees themself in this category of one who has never placed belief and trust in Jesus and Jesus alone, that you would again confront them with the reality of their sin and draw them to the Savior.

A highlight from EDWARD SNOWDEN: BITCOIN IS A WORLD STARTING IDEA | Bitcoin Amsterdam 2023 | Sb Originals
"John I've not known you long, but I love you already, but I have to say that it's it's disingenuous To claim that the biases they're exhibited on Fox News are any different from the biases exhibited on MSNBC It's difficult to suggest that these corporations operate as anything other than mouthpieces for their affiliate owners in black rock and vanguard And unless we start to embrace and then also mate like just spiritually if I may use that word in your great country We have to take responsibility For our own perspective. I've been on that MSNBC mate. It was propagandist nutcracker It was absurd the way they carried on There was no one called Joe there no one could concentrate they didn't understand the basic tenets of June journalism No one was willing to stick up for genuine American heroes like Edward Snowden No one was willing to talk about Julian Assange and what he suffered trying to bring real journalism to the American people What's up guys and welcome back today We're gonna dive into a realm where technology meets privacy freedom and a sprinkle of rebellion because hey We're talking Bitcoin and who better to kind of navigate us through this digital jungle than the master of privacy himself Edward Snowden And just this past week Snowden was the star at Bitcoin Amsterdam And he had a lot to say so let's decrypt his insights and explore what he calls a peaceful revolution Hey, we got a lot to cover. Let's get it Bitcoin has a privacy problem Everybody knows it and it's for many as many years as I've been giving these talks now It is still on fix The world has a privacy problem Okay, so so so what do you do about it? You know people in the room? Oh, you know, let me do a coin join I'm gonna erase this by shuffling these round and I'll do 200 levels of mix -ins or something like that cool. Yes, you know, I am proud of you for knowing that it's possible But no stop that that's not what we're looking Contorting yourself to be able to fit to pass through the keyholes of the tyranny that is surrounding us That's not the solution The goal is not to you know Wake up in the morning and be blessed with the perfect suite of knowledge and skills That will allow you to dance through the Byzantine a hell the smartphones, you know evil invisible Perfidious network traffic that is timing you out to everybody in the can without asking your permission Just in order to be able to interact with society in some approximation of safely, right? You go. Well, I got VPNs and I've got these things that hurt they're blocking this I'm using ad blockers and I've got a hardened browser and whatever that's not the goal And it only benefits, you know, the the smallest minority fraction When we talked about, you know, the old case of Lenin and these people who were sort of putting their acts on the ground It comes from the collective there has to be a mass there has to be enough people and the more exclusively The more exclusive your community becomes because of the burden of knowledge that it requires to participate in it the smaller that collective will necessarily be And we need to recognize that the status quo of the world it is whether it's the way Sort of on chain privacy analysis is happening and they're you know, tracking cross -chain transfers You see people tweeting this stuff out. But oh look this person moved to this that person moved back That's not normal. It's not acceptable, but it is here It's inside the room. It's on your phone. It's in your pocket. It's in on the Wi -Fi It's the cameras that watched you walk into the venue to now have vehicle recognition and person recognition baked into the algorithm It's on the chip. It doesn't even cost the manufacturer anything extra to add in. They just got to enable the software It is everywhere And the thing that I want you to take away from all that is that the acting in secret is not not freedom Right. It's not the goal. It's not that we want to liberate Ourselves as the individual we want to liberate that the collective individual And accepting that it's normal for there to be processes out there where you have to submit, you know a notarized photo of your paint Let's say, you know Your on -chain team maybe not to your rulers in Manhattan be an automated form in order to establish Your identity or your proof of funds in order to be permitted to spend your own money. That's not freedom The necessity of coin joins and so on That is Because you are unfree that is in proof of funds that is proof of unfreedom You know Snowden hits the nail on the head about the world's privacy problem But the world's privacy issue isn't a sinking ship just yet It's a call to action though and a shout to innovate and take back control and Bitcoin it seems is our paddle in these stormy Seas, you can create systems now that are unowned and still function that can be decentralized They can be private by default And that is powerful this is big stuff but creating unknown systems a realm free of control and surveillance It sounds utopian today, doesn't it? But with Bitcoin this utopia seems within grasp However, not all the glitters is gold. The crypto market is buzzing with the talk of ETFs But is that what we really want right now? The reason everybody's getting excited about the price is they're thinking about you know Even if price is moving Because that is a kind of subordination that is a kind of subjugation that is a process of taming That we see being played out all the allure of the ETFs. It is a tempting fruit for some but Snowden warns It's a step towards subjugation We know what they can do with rehypothecation and a move away from the core essence of Bitcoin Which is self -custody removing banks and intermediaries The idea isn't to emulate but to innovate to liberate when you think about why everybody's so excited about the SEC and it's more it's Like stable coins and everything like that is because there's a real demand for stable points because you know They want to find a way to offset volatility Then okay, if you will not engage in that sort of legacy systems you can but but don't try to emulate the dollar Liberate Seize it right make it on own make it decentralized make it private None of the stable points that exist right now, but I'm aware of our private by default There are some that at least don't have blacklisting or whatever as opposed to like a tether or USDC But it's important to remember that that's not enough just like with Bitcoin. Bitcoin is an enormously powerful enormously useful That's as it is If we think about Bitcoin as how it was there was a time when everybody thought big payments were private Right, just because there wasn't a name on the account and people are still you journalists are still out there saying Oh Bitcoin You know the anonymous digital currency or whatever. We know it's not That level of sophistication creeps up. The ledger is always out there the ways that will be applied and exploited will only grow What about tomorrow and yeah all these people they're talking about stable coins, etc speaking of liberation a hot topic as Snowden points out as stable coins have a long road ahead to Embody the ethos of decentralization and privacy and it's not just about creating some digital dollar counterpart It's about crafting a currency free from the shackles of control. This is why there's Bitcoin and everything else We have only two roads freedom and happiness Or the grave When the system considers your life to be one of its primary resources a Crucial move that is available to any collective is to hold one's own life for ransom You need to push forth the question are the concessions that are being asked more easily endured Than the life than the loss of life that withholding those concessions would provoke Not not only the loss of labor, right but the cost of extinguishing the intransigent lives this is Effectively the root of all minority power all labor bargaining. It will be harder to Remove me than to live with me We're kind of drawing closer to this climax our two paths are clear freedom and happiness or this dreary dystopian world economic forum end and the stakes are high and the time is ripe for action and our action according to Snowden starts with disengaging from seeking validation or permission from these traditional authorities and these failing institutions and we need to stop asking for permission for this all of the people who are Tracking the price looking at the headlines and you know going over the SEC the SEC Gary You know Gensler is not daddy Bitcoin I don't really care what he thinks and I don't think you should either and yeah Gary Gensler isn't the gatekeeper of bitcoins potential We are the community is and as the saying goes power to the people, but how do we harness this power? How do we respond to the tightening noose around creative and financial freedom? Our space is being cut off The space for invention space for creation space for transaction Has been narrowed and it's continuing to be narrowed And at what point do we respond? At what point do they see our response at what point do they stop marching off our developers to prison? and at which point Do we start taking their authorities away? I forgot to mention on Tuesday's pod, we put up a new rewatchables on Monday. We did So I Married an Axe Murderer, one of my favorite nineties comedies, and it was me and Sean Fennesey and Chris Ryan. We had a great time. I put up a lot of content this week because we had the three part NBA under podcast as well with Rossello and House. Did Sunday's pod, had this pod. Sorry for all the content. It's a lot of me, a lot of talking. I do have some Ringer news for you. Austin Rivers. Yeah. He is spinning off onto his own feed that is called Off Guard. It's Austin Rivers and Pasha. They've moved on Tuesdays and Fridays. They're going to be putting up podcasts. Make sure you follow it on Spotify. Also in that Ringer NBA show feed, the group chat podcast, which is excellent with Barrier and Woz and Mahoney, they're going to be going now basically Sunday, late morning, early afternoon -ish and then Wednesdays. So they're moving to twice a week. So that's our basketball news. Also, we had our first true crime pod, the first Ringer true crime pod we've ever done. Justin Sales, my guy, New Englander, still kept the accent. One of our finest. And he pitched us this really, really, really great seven part series about how he got scammed. That is what episode one is about. And it just keeps going. It keeps going, gets weirder, gets weirder. There's no way you're not going to like it if you like true crime. So check it out. It's called Wedding Scammer. It is the Ringer's first true crime podcast. I also went on Jimmy Trainor's podcast this week. So if you want to hear me talk about me, which I hate usually, but I did it on that podcast. I'm on there as well. Coming up on this podcast, Howard Beck from the Ringer talking about John Morant, James Harden, some other stealth storylines heading into opening night on Tuesday. And then Million Dollar Picks, feeling really good about the Million Dollar Picks this week. And then Arno Hwani, our guy, talking Knicks, talking Bills, talking the big UFC event this week, talking about the influencer boxing thing he did last week and some WWAW stuff. And then I thought I'd end the podcast there. No, no, because we launched a new segment that we're probably spinning off into another podcast. We talk about it during the segment, but Amanda Dobbins came on to talk about The Morning Show, which is the worst good show on TV. It's either the best bad show on TV or the worst good show on TV. Just make sure worst is somewhere in there. It is just inexplicable. It's unbelievable. I can't stop watching every episode. I hate myself for it. Amanda and I are gonna break down all the reasons why we just can't believe the show exists. That is the podcast. First, our friends from ProGip. Show"] ["The Morning All right, Howard Beck is here. He works for The Ringer. We love having him. We're gonna talk some NBA storylines. I did four hours of NBA preview content on with Monday Priscillo and House, and it already feels like seven things have happened since we did that. The biggest one was ESPN wrote a huge story about John Marrant. It's written by Baxter Holmes and who was the other one? Tim McMahon? Yeah, that they reported for a while. Tim McMahon. The timing of it was interesting, heading into the week of the season. I also thought Jaa's absence was being slept on a little bit, especially when we're talking about The Futures, where I think their over -under was like 44 and a half, 45 and a half, and I was like, Jaa's gone for 25 games? This feels like a big deal. Plus, what are we getting when he comes back? And you read that story, and it was mostly stuff that had been around or stuff that was out there. There was some unflattering stuff in there, but in general, I left that story going, hmm. Now the narrative is going to be this story was out there. There's a bigger spotlight on, but now it's actually a little bit better for Jaa in a way, because the attention, now you can kind of use that. Nobody believes in me that this is, I don't know. I was wondering, how do you think that story and the whole blow around it affects him and his comeback? Well, it's interesting. By the way, I'm only about 90 minutes into your five -hour marathon on the over -under. Yeah, maybe over the weekend. But I listen to pods while they wash dishes or while I'm on the treadmill. I'm gonna just have to, I need more dirty dishes and I need to get into better shape. And by the time the end of the week, I'll be through it. No, I mean, you were right to flag that, right? Ja Morant, not there on media day. So he still has not spoken to anybody in the media, to the public in general, since this 25 -game suspension was handed down by Adam Silver, that the story came out now. Look, I haven't talked to our friends at ESPN about reporting the process and everything else, but those things take time. I don't think anybody should read into it that it dropped now, it's relevant now. We're going into seasons opening up next week and one of their brightest young stars won't be there under really unique and troubling circumstances. Well, it seems like they also talk to every local business owner in Memphis because there was a bunch of them. So you could tell they worked on it for months and months. For sure. And by the way, neither of those guys is Memphis -based. I think like McMahon has responsibility for a lot of teams and Memphis might be one of his and Baxter is just kind of more like all -purpose investigative guy. So if you're not based there, so there's the first challenge. As I'm reading this as a reporter, my first thought is like, wow, either somebody pointed you in the right direction, like you need to go talk to this restaurant owner or this might've been strip club owner, this bar owner, whoever. Cause if not, you're just kind of making the rounds and trying to get a fee. Like you could do that. You could do a lot of just like the shoe leather reporting, but that's tough when you're not based there and you don't have that local network of people. They talked to obviously some really important voices there. People who knew not just the on -court version of this or what the internal politics of the Grizzlies are, but how he's being perceived in the community. And it also tracks Bill with a lot of the other incidents that have been reported on in the last six to eight months, right? It's not just issues with, obviously flashing guns is the big thing right now, but it's not even just issues with how he's conducting himself within the organization with teammates or coaches or team officials. Social media judgment. Social media judgment, but the attitude or the entitlement issues that seem to present themselves with these local business owners, who I think we're all speaking anonymously, tracks with a lot of the stuff that was like the shoe store incident, the mall incident and all these other things, right? There's a pattern here. And so I think the story is really valuable in that sense. It's giving us a more full picture that this is an ongoing issue on a variety of levels, even including just the way he carries himself around Memphis. The other thing that struck me, yeah. Well, there was one piece in there. I knew most of this stuff or I had heard secondhand, but I think the people like us, we just talk to a lot of people. So you get a general vibe of where things are going or what things are happening. The one thing that was in the story that I never really thought about, one of the anonymous owners was saying, and this guy was the biggest celebrity we've had since Elvis. And I read that and I did like a double take and I'm like, is that true? And I'm thinking about it. I'm like, yeah, that's probably true. Like who, it's not like any of the, they had Zebo, they had Pau Gasol, they had Derrick Rose when he was at the University of Memphis. But for the most part, I hadn't really thought of it that way. And then you think like this young, kick -ass, incredibly fun to watch star just drops in their lap as like the consolation prize in the Zion draft and then becomes what he becomes in a small city and just becomes the guy. And I guess I'd never really wrap my head around that. But when I read that, did you do a double take when you saw that? I did and I guess I chuckled a little bit because it's just such a like, whoa, wait, hold on. Well, cause we're old enough to remember when Elvis died, that was like the biggest thing that happened in 1977.

The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix
A highlight from Preseason Begins & The Annual GM Survey
"This is the crossover NBA podcast Chris Mannix joined as I always am by Chris Herring and Rohan Nadkarni. Quick housekeeping note fellas the NBA preview issue is out I guess the basketball preview issue because there is a lot of college stuff in there as well but the cover is NBA Jimmy Butler guest editor for this NBA preview issue Rohan you spent some time with Jimmy Butler in parts unknown I assume South Florida did a a story with him it's excellent check that out I've got a piece on the Phoenix Suns spent some time talking to Matt Ishbia James Jones Frank Vogel key pieces of that organization trying to recreate exactly what happened after the season ended how they got this point where they have one of the most expensive teams in NBA history a lot of good stuff there scouting reports different elements as well make sure you pick up the magazine on stands right now. So fellas we've got the NBA GM survey that's out and I want to dive into some of the elements of that but before we start recording this podcast I was just going through social media looking up some clips and all that stuff and I came across one from the Pat Bev pod the Patrick Beverly pod he does with Barstool Sports I just want to play this clip for you because Pat Bev was joined by Michael Rubin the former owner of the Philadelphia 76ers now this still the CEO with fanatics someone who has a strong relationship with a lot of players including James Harden who they discussed in this clip here as a past NBA owner obviously you're close to the Sixers the situation that's going on with James Harden how would you handle it it wouldn't have happened you know first of all James is family to me and like I'm not going to hide about that I love James this thing is breaking my heart this thing was just not handled well he was playing with us in practice and boy he was cooking he was oh I'm talking about the pot was out and he was stirring that bitch up there's nobody who wants to win a championship more than James Harden I know this guy like my brother people give James a hard time because you know he likes to have fun it's bullshit like the guy the guy's work ethic for basketball is insane and his attitude has been great he's been leading he's been giving advice so you might hear all the bad shit you know TV from reporters that's not there but actually being a teammate that's there he's he's been phenomenal I block out the noises really same because I think a lot of people just don't know like the real James Harden how badly he wants to win I think he's in great not good shape he's in great shape yeah he's in great shape right that's right body looks great yeah every time I'm in the weight room he's in the weight room he's gonna ball out this year so herring I know my blood shouldn't boil when I hear stuff like this and I know it you know the podcast is doing its job if it gets me kind of drawn in and talking about it but to hear Michael Rubin say that James Harden wants to win a championship more than anyone at the same time that James Harden is trying to force his way off a championship contender that is a Rubik's Cube of nonsense that I'm really having a hard time wrapping my head around your thoughts on the propaganda emerging from the Pat Bev pod about James Harden I'm just trying to think of a stranger mashup than the one you just explained I mean the the whole universe of Michael Rubin and all the there's so many things lately that just on social media that I've wanted to mute and I don't think I know enough about how to do it I haven't taken the time to do it but if I had a way of muting like Michael that Rubin parties James Harden and any other number of athletes are at or like all these white parties and everything else it's like I would do that but that makes this element of this story this this framing odd because it's like okay well he presumably is friendly with James Harden or James Harden is friendly with him but also the fundamental standpoint now at this point that maybe there are people in the organization that instead of kind of just gloves off which it seemed like it would be based on what James Harden said about Daryl Morey earlier this summer that there's also the very real possibility that maybe he's not traded and so they need him to feel wanted and they need him to feel like they want him to perform well which is what you would want if you're a team that at least there's a you said in one of the last pockets we did it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could be a winner a contender a champion if everything fell right you know the right way so I think that's all this is is just positive reinforcement but I mean it's also silly from the standpoint that you're saying that clearly people that are making trade demands whether it's behind the scenes whether it's publicly whether it's saying my general manager my president is a liar it's hard to hold those two thoughts in the same time in your head that you know on the one hand he can say those things but also nobody wants it more than he does come on like I did I know it's just you know the first thing probably that popped into Ruben's mind but it's just silly Rowan I know you're you're a regular at these white parties but do you have a issue let me just first of all echo my esteemed colleague Chris herrings fatigue with Michael Rubin just this guy's everywhere all the time fanatics sucks I'll say it fanatics is not good wow let's start there I mean like kudos to Michael Rubin you know what he did getting involved with meat mill etc but like we could have left it at that listen I if I were James Harden I might be living my life a similar way I let me put it that way but there is now a what is it a preponderance of evidence that winning a championship is not necessarily number one on this guy's priority list just not only in terms of how he's carried himself this offseason but how he likes to carry himself during the season when he's staying in Miami or Vegas for an extra night I'm away from steam mates are flying separately etc that all that stuff's been reported I'm just I'm sick of the the Sixers offseason I'm sick of the Embiid hard in partnership I respect you Mannix for still holding out hope having faith you've always been kind of an optimist a wanderer a dream I died that's why I don't describe you but I'm just so over this it just well like you said I mean respect to that podcast we're here talking about it I love Pat Bev he's a good personality but like what are we doing here Michael Rubin who are you who are you fooling okay we are familiar with James Harden's game okay you're not fooling us game off the court specifically right like you you can't say James Harden is misunderstood or gets a bad rap when right he he forced his way out of Houston by throwing a multi -week temper tantrum he effectively quit on the Nets which forced them to make a when deal they probably didn't want to and now here he is trying to get out of Philadelphia after holding you know one of the worst holdouts in holdout history to stay away from the team it just the the I mean just trying to get us to believe that is just wild so you know we had to talk about it you know James Harden still officially member of the 76ers we'll see what happens as these preseason games go on and what they do with them but right now James Harden kind of between a rock and a hard place might have to play for Philadelphia this season so I want to talk in this episode about the GM survey which always provides good preseason material whenever it comes out and there were some interesting elements in this year's GM survey guys and I want to start with the championship prediction from the NBA GMs which turned into a two -way tie between the Boston Celtics and the Denver Nuggets Milwaukee coming into third place 23 % Phoenix 7 % they came in fourth in the LA Clippers finishing at 3 % last year the Bucks were the leader at 43 % Denver doesn't surprise me Denver has the core of that team back we've talked about this before I think they can expect some organic growth from Christian Brown I think Peyton Watson might be able to play they've some other guys on that roster that can take steps up by the way while we're speaking of the Nuggets condolences to Mike Malone's family for the passing of Brendan Malone his father that was revealed by the organization this week but when it comes to Denver on the floor I can see why they'd be a championship contender the Celtics I might be one of the few pessimists I don't know if I'm pessimistic about the South I have more questions about the Celtics than many people do my good friend Scalabrini was on TV recently and he said every GM would want this roster and I tend to agree with that sort of because if you could bubble wrap this roster and guarantee that it plays 65 to 70 games together and will be healthy going into the playoffs I think you're absolutely right I think the backcourt is really strong especially defensively Drew Holliday elite defender Derek White big time defender we know what Jalen Brown Jason Tatum can do you know that that that speaks for itself the front court is good right Chris has Porzingis good player Al Horford good player but Porzingis chronically injured right like he played what 60 -65 games last year but that was a contract year and I have less confidence he's going to be able to repeat that he was already injured this off season with whatever happened with his foot over in the World Cup Al Horford's 37 by design he's probably only going to play like 50 games this year because they want to keep him healthy for the playoffs so we don't know what's what Al Horford is going to look like at the end of this season after that what is there they signed Wennion Gabriel Wennion Gabriel last year played 68 games for the Lakers in the playoffs he played 10 he averaged 3 .7 minutes per game in the playoffs with the Lakers last year that is the definition of playable in the regular season and unplayable in the playoffs like it just is what it is Luke Cornette is still there he was unplayable for Boston in the playoffs last year you know this is a team that was already thin when Grant Williams was there now Grant Williams is gone and I don't know what they do if one of these two guys goes down for any length of time so that's a long way of saying like yeah I can buy the argument that the Celtics are the team to beat Eastern Conference I can buy the argument that they are a championship contender but Rohan I just I have a lot of concerns about what happens if anything goes south in that front court I agree I mean that's why I thought the holiday trade was so fascinating and why I wasn't sure how seriously to take Boston as a contender for holiday even though his name was obviously their name was obviously coming up that entire weekend before he was traded a huge reason why they've been been special the last few years is kind of the alchemy of their front court mix -in matching Horford, Rob Williams, and Grant Williams that's gone entirely I see people saying now Porzingis and Horford might start together this talks about does Derek White come off the bench there's a right that's another thing I don't understand I mean you don't you don't have a backup really for either guy right now why aren't they backing up each other that already is starting to not make a ton of sense for me the way I look at it Mannix is I do think we're starting to see some trickle -down effect of the second apron because you look at the top teams right now whether it's Milwaukee, Boston, Phoenix, Denver to an extent it's not that the championship teams of yesteryear were flawless but we're looking at teams that are especially top heavy these days and Boston doesn't have a lot of avenues to improve the roster same for Milwaukee I mean I think Milwaukee has a great five and uh Holliday, Conaton, Middleton, Giannis, and Lopez but then they have Bobby Portis and they have a bunch of question marks after that they don't have a lot of playoff rotation guys uh Phoenix is in a similar boat Denver I think you and I are probably high on Denver's bench than most people we like what we think Peyton Watkins can do Peyton Watson can do Zeke Najee Swarther had a nice pre -season debut but those are a bunch of question marks for them right now so on one hand I echo your skepticism about Boston only in terms of Horford's coming off the worst postseason of his career um I think on both ends of the floor and he's only getting older Porzingis he's played 10 playoff games in his life but when you match them up against kind of the other contenders unless you think like a team like the Lakers or Warriors who have a little bit more depth maybe not quite as much top and talent uh can make a push I understand why you'd put Boston there only because I think a lot of the contenders are really top heavy right now well I mean but the the front court like to get out of the Eastern Conference you gotta get through Milwaukee and Milwaukee's front court is still really strong they still have all the pieces that were in place they still got Giannis still got Brook Lopez still got Bobby Portis they've still got all the guys that have the potential to give Boston a lot of problems and I go back a couple of years and the Celtics back when they had Rob Williams and they had Grant Williams they were in the mix for Yaka Purdle when San Antonio was trying to deal him they wanted to get Purdle they didn't want to get two first -round draft picks back then but they knew back then when they had you know three you know strong front court guys that they needed one more to get through Milwaukee that was when they made the deal for Mike Mascala and he turned out to be unplayable in the playoffs as well so I have concerns about Boston's front court anything about the predictions hearing concern you or you know stand out to you whether it's the Celtics or somebody else I mean I can admit to the same thing you guys are saying that I was surprised that Boston was tied for first for just you know the team that GM's thought was the most likely to win the whole thing it's really hard for me to look at this roster without wincing just a little bit we all can acknowledge that there's a lot of top and talent in this team there was before the moves they made this summer there is now the Porzingis fit is interesting I think everybody can look at that and say wow that if this works out they can win a title obviously no one's denying that it's just to have him and Horford as your two centers and then Wendy and Gabriel who I really like but I don't think of as necessarily my second or third string center or you know if he's even a center he's like six nine or whatever he is so that's all it's just you know and look I've been critical of the Celtics from the standpoint of you're trading away a lot to get Porzingis if only you're talking about Marcus Smart from the standpoint of you know a backbone a heart and soul obviously a very versatile important defender within that cog that they have defensively so they go get Drew Holliday and I think it does kind of answer a lot of those questions a lot of those criticisms but I just I still wonder a little bit of if now you're doing that and in doing that you give away Robert Williams if it makes you thinner at the spot that I was most concerned about now you know it's center even when they had those three it was kind of a weird hodgepodge of guys that you're not for any reason you're not gonna feel comfortable about whether they can hold up and be healthy the whole year also stylistically if you're missing one of guys it changes the way your offense looks because two of them are guys that can shoot from three one is a guy that's kind of more around the rim and setting screens and stuff like that so anyway I was just a little bit surprised that as we're all acknowledging the potential thinness of this group that they would be a co -favorite here I think the Nuggets still deserve to be the favorite and I personally would probably take the Bucks over the Celtics as a favorite but but all that said you know I don't think there's a runaway team here after the Nuggets I would probably leave them at number one because there was a lot of other stuff that happened between the depth of the Lakers the top end stuff of the Celtics the top end stuff of the Bucks to me when I see that much stuff happening I'm just going to defer to the team that won last year that granted they did lose some things but they have the potential to get better with more continuity of the top end guys that they have that haven't been healthy up until last year so I would you know I was a little bit surprised to see that Boston pulled into a tie with Denver among the GMs well we as we know the Boston media mafia is working over time in these kinds of situations I'm kidding I know it was the GM survey one thing I want to throw out there is in a in kind of a funny twist like the Celtics have had the best Joel Embiid defender over the years in Al Horford and Horford was giving Embiid problems in the semis last year to the point where Tucker had to get in his face and be like bro you need to take this matchup but what does Boston do now in that matchup because if you're playing Horford against Embiid does that mean you're playing Porzingis and Horford together and which of your guards are you keeping off the floor does that mean you keep Derek White off the floor it's kind of an interesting problem they've created for themselves unless they're willing to live with Porzingis on Embiid but that kind of takes away one of the biggest strengths they've had in that matchup over the years yeah is it going to be a challenge for them because Horford has been excellent I mean Embiid he gives him so many problems he clearly has the timing down on Embiid like he does he knows yeah it's fat it's fantastic to watch he pushes him off his spots he's he's just got a lot of you know and maybe some of it's mental too like Embiid's seen him so many times over the years that it's like all right well Al Horford again and you know he's asked about every single postseason he's had great games against Horford don't get me wrong he's played really well at times but it is I have a little surprise guys that the team nobody's really in on the Suns yet seven percent seem a little low for me you know man look I understand maybe Herring you got to give this team time to figure itself out and see if these guys can play together and see if this mix of players can work but you know if that team gets the playoffs fully healthy hard to stop very hard to stop in the postseason no no question I mean you know I watched clips I watched bits of the the game that they played against the Pistons and granted it's the Pistons you know one of the youngest teams in the league but to watch the Suns who you know have just started playing together that you know have 80 points between the first and the third quarter of a road game road opener for preseason there's obviously a lot of potential there offensively I would say that as we talk the things we like and dislike about teams the thinness the depth of these rosters I'm a little bit surprised that the Suns haven't done a little bit more to go out and get a a bonafide point guard I think it's a big granted you have a lot of ball handling on that roster it's not to say you don't and top level guys that can do it but it's a big change to go from having Chris Paul be your point guard and even to have campaign be your backup point guard to then going and just saying we're you know we're going to kind of take the Clippers route to have our forwards handle the ball to have Devin Booker handle the ball again all guys that can do it but these are also guys that you like to just kind of throw in iso situations you don't want to wear them down the whole season of having them handle the ball so I they've added depth and I think they need that they obviously needed it last offseason or I'm sorry last postseason and so they've done well to add to that but I think that they still it would do them well to have even if it's you know I look at something like what the Bulls did they went and got Javon Carter someone that played for the Suns at one point the sort of guy that could really be helpful to this team I also wonder just a little bit just a little and I think I saw some of this in their first preseason game as well Yusuf Nurkic is an interesting fit I think he can do good things for them he's good you know as a playmaker here and there defensively I worry just a little bit about him of how big it seemed like he took in Portland and you know for all the problems Ayton has at times I wonder if he's more nimble defensively and would work better defensively with that team but we'll see we'll see what happens I think that the Suns absolutely could win it they absolutely have the talent and skill to do it I think they have you know a coach that I really like one of my favorites in league and Vogel but I definitely have some questions about them which is why again would still take Denver head and shoulders above everybody else for now I actually am a little bit surprised the Lakers didn't get more picks here as well in this in the survey I maybe would have liked the Suns more before the Nurkic trade I'm just I'm replaying that Denver series in my head and while Landry Shammet was getting a ton of open threes and theoretically that could be Bradley now I mean I look at them as even worse or you know more poorly equipped to slow down the Nuggets than they were last year and while we're on the subject of health I mean Durant you know he missed some time obviously he came back right before the start of the playoffs and looked great at times and I think bookers only continue to improve but I mean there's a health there's a health question mark hanging over them you know as long as Durant is there and I I need to see it I mean there's definitely some exciting moments just watching kind of Beale Booker and Durant take their turns in that preseason game and it's like oh man like they have three guys who can go just iso and get a score seemingly anytime they want but and I'm I'm warming to the Nurkic move more than when it first happened but I really need to see that defense in action for a little while before I can take them seriously as a title contender yeah I think you guys just articulated why they only got seven percent of the vote there's a lot of question marks out there about them until we see them actually come together and play all right we had Nicole Jokic picked up first place in two different categories and I want to talk about both of them first was the player most likely to win the 2023 -24 MVP he got 43 percent of the vote in that category Yanis at number two at 20 percent and then if you were starting a franchise today and could sign any player who would it be he got 33 percent of the vote in in that category Victor Webayama coming in second with 23 percent on the subject of MVP guys let's start there 43 percent of the vote I'm actually shocked it wasn't higher like I thought it would be like 70 percent because not look first he's 28 years old he's in his prime he's durable he's just won a championship he was you know the best player on the best team in the NBA there's no reason to believe he's not going to come in next year and put up comparable or this year put up comparable numbers and I do think that the people that were divided on Nicole Jokic last year are not going to be divided this year the people that were skeptics about his ability to win and use that against him when it came to MVP voting and use that as a reason to vote for Joel Embiid those people aren't going to exist or that feeling isn't going to exist if Nicole Jokic puts up MVP numbers on the guy on the team that is at or near the top of the western conference there is no doubt in my mind he is going to win MVP he is going to get deservedly I think every benefit of the doubt this year when it comes to MVP votes so whether it's you know Embiid, Giannis, Jason Tatum, Luka Doncic I think Jokic is going to get the benefit of the doubt there Herring I think he's going to be by far and away he is by far and away the front runner to win the MVP.

"I actually would have no clue because I'm so locked in on that one plane now. That I can't see anything else in my head. But he did complain like he had a few and I feel like he did complain later. He didn't complain, but he said, you know, I'm just playing within the offense. The ball didn't find its way back to me. And it's like, you know, you're James Harden. If you want the ball, you're going to have the ball in your hands. But what's the answer? Three times. Isolated three times in the game. Which is a shocking number. You could have 8 minutes. 43. There were a few. Zero points in the second half, 15 fewer than shake Milton. Scored in the second half. Yeah, like going back to my original point. Look, embiid was understandably bad. And when you take away his physicality and render him a jump shooter, he's not efficient. He's not impactful, defensively. They were going at him from the jump. Like early in the game, they were not really the heat we're not petrified of the paint either. I thought tyrese maxis defense was really bad. And just like talking after the game, you know, I just think it's interesting how I mean and be essentially saying publicly that this is not the Houston version of James Harden. Yeah, man. And he's a playmaker. This is two years in a row where he does this after his team is eliminated. It's like kind of suspect behavior. I'm not gonna lie. I know that it's the truth, but you shouldn't, you shouldn't say that if you're jealous. Here's the thing with that. I know what it accomplishes. Yeah, I mean, he's in a rare spot where he's such an unquestioned star, these star, the franchise player, the guy that no matter what's happening, you're not letting him go. That it affords you the right to be able to say whatever you want to say, I don't know that that equates to good leadership. You know, as we talk about somebody like Steph, who Steph obviously of all the things he does well, I think that kind of is understated with him, like how little drama there is generally what he says. There is a ton of noise out there in the basketball spheres about whose team is this, who's better, staff or KD, Steph never played that game. Steph been over backwards seemingly to reduce that. Steph, Steph got on a plane when Katie was a free agent and learned that Katie was siding in Brooklyn. When he was in the air to meet KD, which was like the ultimate selfless act. Right, and it's interesting, too. You know, obviously draymond had a big role in KD coming there in the first place. He also had a seemingly big role in Katie leaving because of the blow up they had in the middle of that one game. Right. So it's like draymond is draymond. He is really, he runs really hot when he's upset. We know that he gets very emotional when he's upset. Steph is so even keel. And embiid, I mean, he's saying it with a level tone. It's not like he's screaming this stuff at the media. It's that he takes the truth serum, and he's telling the truth, which I get it. On its face, him being the unquestioned star of the team, he has the right to say it. It's the truth. But it's also when you look at the Simmons situation, Simmons handled it very poorly. There's no question, but if you know that people have a tendency to kind of, what's the word I'm looking for here? Flinch and kind of counter punch because of what you're saying, and then hold out, you know, take passive aggressive jabs at you, it creates an awkward dynamic that guys may not want to be there. Now, I will say this, if you created a situation where hard doesn't want to be there anymore, you might be doing the right thing. Which is a whole different conversation. I don't think it's going to happen. And meanwhile, James Harden also said, I'll be here next year, which is like, I've been in situations sometimes where maybe there was a girl I was dating and I really didn't want her to stay any longer than she already had. And that's kind of what I immediately thought of when he was like, I'll be here. But can you just go home? 47 million is a lot of money, which is why he will probably be there. But you have to raise serious serious questions about what that looks like and that has to be the end of it. But it's an interesting question depending on what Daryl morey promised him or heavily suggested he would give him if he agreed to be traded there. So I have no clue what's going to happen next. It'll be fascinating. So I guess zooming out really quick about Philadelphia. One of the reasons I didn't like them as an actual title contender, even when Joel embiid was healthy, was they don't have any wing defenders. And so when Danny Green went down early on three minutes into game 6, it was like, Danny Green's low key, a critical player for this team. Not only was it one of the only guys who was making threes and he did hit a three before he got hurt. But at least a winged body you can throw on hero. He's a wing body. You can throw on Jimmy, although it wouldn't even matter. You have thigh bone, but he can't shoot. He's not a consistent enough shooter to be able to do it all, obviously. Correct. And they were playing lineups where thigh bowl in the first half. I was on the floor with shake Milton, and I'm like, okay. What are we doing? But you look at Jimmy Butler's series. And this man averaged 27 and a half points. He made over half of his shots in the second half of game 6. He scored 23 points and was ten for 19 from the field, just absolute dominance. And not to take anything away from him, but the sixers just can't match up with wing scorers and the most important. One of the most important things. Second to a superstar is like, you need two way wings to win in the NBA playoffs in 2022. Sixers didn't have it. Didn't have any of them, really. So that's number one why I was like, it's kind of like, there's no point in crapping on James Harden and saying, hey, we don't have any PJ Tucker guys who are like tough like PJ. I just don't understand what that accomplishes. When you kind of know that, yeah, we can just talk about this right now about the player option situation. To lay it out, James Harden has a $47.3 million player option for next season. And he is going to opt in. I would be shocked if he acted out. It makes no sense for him to opt out and I think that the sixers would probably prefer that as well, even though it doesn't look great right now. But you could you can tinker around the margins as best you can if your Dale Murray the soft season. You know you have James, maybe James was hurt. After they got him, or he tweaked his hamstring. At some point, I don't know. I kind of doubt that that's the case just because we saw flashes of him being really good in a 6 year uniform. So I don't want to say the hamstring was the reason why he struggled at times in the postseason. But you could add more three point shooting, you can find some of those wings. Maybe I don't know what happens with Tobias Harris who could have upped his trade value a little bit even though his contract is really,.

"From ugh. All right, I want to bounce around a little bit on a couple of different things. It was like three days ago, Sarah, that I had like my shovel here, and I was ready to just pour dirt on James Harden's grave. That was done with James Harden. And I was ready to write the column and I still might. Like, what do you do Daryl morey with James Harden? Who has not been the James Harden that Maury had in his years in Houston. Then game four of the series against Miami comes around. And James Harden breaks out 31 points, 8 of 18 from the floor, 6 of ten from three point range. He hands out 9 assists, he pulls down 7 rebounds, he was excellent in that game. And it kind of, as this series shifts back to Miami tonight, I don't know which James Harden's gonna show up. That's a big part of all this. I think MB is gonna be there and motivated when get to why in a minute, but like, do you have any read on what James Harden's gonna look like? Night after night, you saw him for a season and a half in Brooklyn. Like, what version of James Harden is left? Like how close can he get to the player we saw for years in Houston? My instinct to that is James Harden is probably asking himself in some regard the same questions. And after spending what a year and a half or so that he was with Brooklyn watching him come over from Houston, obviously there was a lot of layers and factors to him his time in Houston wants one that style of play coming to Brooklyn that first half a season last year, or sorry this year, the first half of season go into Philly, James Harden is such a cerebral player for as much as we think about him as a scorer and.

All right, let's turn for a minute to James Harden, who made his debut with the 76ers over the weekend, played brilliantly in these two games, averaged 28 points into game shot 57% from the floor, shot 57% from three, handed out 14 assists per game over these next two. Granted, it was against the Timberwolves and the woebegone New York Knicks, but it was impressive. So I want to go kind of go first here though, Howard, because I'm not surprised, right? I've been saying every time we talk about this or I write about this, that the next three months or four months. However long it goes for James Harden this season. Are going to be great for Philadelphia. Why? Because you have a motivated James Harden out there on the floor. He's motivated by people criticizing him for how it ended in Brooklyn. He's motivated about being a good teammate. Someone that can find a way to mesh his talent with Joel embiid to mesh his skill set with tyrese maxi to be a leader out there on the floor. The next few months are going to be the very best of James Harden. And on top of it all, if he does all those things, there's a pot of gold at the end of that proverbial rainbow. There is a equivalent of a 5 year contract, or a four year extension, whatever it's going to be for more than a quarter of a $1 billion waiting for him. So I expect James Harden to be the a plus plus version of himself of these final few months of the season. What's always worried me is what happens when James Harden gets that bag. What happens next year when you get into the dog days of January and February and Joel embiid is putting his hand up for a post pass and James Harden dribbles the ball 18 seconds on the perimeter. What happens when Joel embiid, who is not known for keeping things to himself, either on the floor with his body language or afterwards in postgame interviews, says something that irritates James Harden. We have seen James Harden, effectively detonate two franchises in the last 14 months. Houston, he, I think he was on sturdier ground there to do that because he'd been there a long time and that team was clearly on the decline. Brooklyn though, it's all better roses, that first year, our first half year, however long he played there, and then when the going got tough, James Harden literally got going. Say, you know what? I'm not doing this. I'm not feeling this. And force his way to the Philadelphia 76ers. So I'd be, I wouldn't be scared at all about the rest of this season. I think he's gonna be great. I think next year, if you give him that quarter of a $1 billion contract, you should be worried week by week about what happens when things get a little bit rough. Well, maybe things won't get rough. I mean, I think that's the gamble here is that, yes, when things go sideways, James Harden checks out. We've seen it happen enough times to know that that's a risk. And we should not base too much on these first two games as you know, not exactly the highest caliber of competition. They've got some tougher games coming up, and we'll see how that goes. But things could not have gone better in the first two games of the James Harden Joel embiid era of the Philadelphia 76ers. Could not have gone better. Both guys thrived. They look great. They play great. Day one, and then there's this. Like, how about, I'm going to read these composite numbers for the last two games. 24.5 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game on a shooting percentage of field goal percentage of 6 6 7. That's not embiid and that's not hardened. That's tyrese maxi, the guy who, if you were a critic of this trade or concern trolling the trade, it was maxis had this breakthrough year. How is he going to function when all of a sudden the poll is not in his hands and he doesn't have control of the tyrese maxi is like kicking serious ass and like 12 or 16 one game 8 for 14 from the field and next. And that was a legitimate basketball analysis concern, right? How's this going to impact this really good young players emerging? I mean, he's been fantastic, even better than he was before. So I really like things could not be going better. So you're right, Chris, as long as things are good, and in the near term, while they're trying to pull this together for a championship run in the near term. Everybody's going to be on their best behavior. I think it's legitimate to wonder what happens down the road if embiid and harden are not on the same page or if there's a game or a series of games where somebody is do it a little too much and they get but Hardin's also at a point in his career where and look, I believe like not everybody, not every superstar wants to win at the highest level as badly as the others. Some do some do a little bit, some do a lot, some that's all they ever think about, I don't think James Harden's one of these guys who's going to be satisfied just to like hang it up one day being a top 5 all time score and having made a ridiculous amount of money. I do think he wants to win at the highest level. I do think he wants to validate the fact that he's not just a great score, but a great player. And you need to win at a higher level to move from one column to the next in the public consciousness. So I think he will do his best to make the partnership work. I think embiid absolutely sees himself as somebody who could be an all time great, but needs to win at the highest level to do so or to validate it or confirm it. So I think it can and I still go back to, I know it was a smallest of sample sizes. But when hard and Durant and Kyrie Irving were together last season, they look great together and Hardin gave up the ball a lot. He was more than willing to keep the ball moving as long as they were winning and those guys were in a great rhythm. So I'm like, I'm weird. As somebody who's been critical of hardened at various stages, like I'm weirdly optimistic about this partnership. Like I think it's going to work. Yeah, but didn't you just kind of made my point for me though? Last year, his first year with Brooklyn, things did get tough. Obviously with injury issues to some of the guys, including himself, but he was so desperate to erase the stink of what happened at the end in Houston that he did all the right things that he did morph his game into more of a playmaker mode that he did embrace a role opposite Kyrie Irving, that he did kind of try to carry this team when he needed to and be the facilitator when he didn't. And he did it for, you know, the entirety of the season. And then next year, things got a little bit tough. And putting aside the Kyrie stuff, which obviously is a discussion unto itself. Like, Kevin Durant didn't tear his Achilles. Like he had a knee injury. It's going to get him back onto the floor any moment now. So I think when things get a little bit rough, it just seems like James Harden turns. And again, I don't think it happens this year. But next year, armed with the security of a 5 year contract, if things aren't going his way, I'd be concerned about it, I would. If I was Philadelphia. You still do it, but it's just there. It's always there. You're right. And I don't dismiss that at all, but as of right now, I'm bullish on what they've got and the potential there. You're a very positive guy hard. We always acknowledge that about you. I'm Emilia..

"Looked good. Yeah, I think that the supporting cast and all the role players trying to fit in around harden and embiid is now that was kind of my concern last week. And I still think it is somewhat of an issue. We saw Tobias Harris is really figuring it out hard and spoke after the Knicks game saying that Harris passed up 5 or 6 wide open spot up shots and tried to put the ball on the deck and that's the type of player to buy users is. And he hasn't really been super confident in his three point ball. This season, so. It's not a given that he'll fit beside harden and Bieber. He can't ever really develop a rhythm. I think they called, they probably called more than one play for him in that game, but the one I noticed or I only noticed one play called for him. And you know, as you were saying, there's staggering these two guys, which makes a ton of sense. But I mean, Hardin's playing those benjamins with Harris a lot, too. It's what it seems like. The plan is right, right, right. We'll see about in terms of backup 5 Willie cauley Stein they signed to attend a, you know, I don't know if he's going to be able to kind of make the most of an opportunity at some point over the next couple of games. Paul Millsap is a backup 5 probably not viable in a playoff run where you're trying to win four playoff series. So we'll see how that shakes out. But maxi has looked really good. I think that that was also a question mark. He just, I mean, he's just such a really he's just a really special player. Like I love tyrese maxi is probably my favorite player on the team, honestly. I don't think it's the best player on the team. I think he's my favorite, just to watch how he kind of single handedly increases the tempo. You were talking about how the Knicks and the Timberwolves really weren't able to attack Hardin defensively. They tried a little bit, but. It really gets you out of your offense when you're trying to run like a pistol action on the side, and force a switch, and they were doing that with fournier and Randall a little bit. And the Knicks are just garbage. So they turn the ball over and I was going to say trying to say, some teams, I think, are going to be able to do it better than others, right? I look at it seem like Atlanta that's almost kind of begging you to switch all their actions because of the number of similar sized guys that are playing on the wings, et cetera. Miami with their off ball movement. I mean, if they try to hide harden on Duncan Robinson, they're going to be running him through screens, control hand offs with Pam. Chicago is going to be a really, really fascinating matchup. Especially when they're at full strength. I'm not saying these teams are better. I'm curious. I'm excited to see it play out. I'm not predicting it one way or another, but I'm really excited to see it play out. There were a lot of good games on yesterday, by the way. Sunday, I mean, 6 years in its game. Did you watch that jazz suns game? I did watch that game. Yes. I was watching it, and I down the stretch. Down the stretch, I thought the sun's had a really good chance to win that game. I think they kind of lost it just because they got dominated in the white side minutes actually. Their starters were playing really well. Tell me what you think of this. I thought it was a little interesting. Late in the game, they're obviously running high pick and roll with Gobert. With the sons have been better off hiding Deandre ayton in the corner on Daniel house. Putting Crowder on Gobert and switching everything. So taking a playbook, taking a page out of his playbook, basically, where they put rob Williams on a wing and they put jaylen Brown on the big so that they can switch everything. Sure. Yeah, if you want to give him credit for coming up with that basketball strategy. Well, I mean. You got to do what, okay, so if you do that, I don't think that that's wrong. And it just felt like they were getting a really good shots in that game, yeah. Yeah, and I mean, Mitchell's pull up three. He's super confident in it. And so you really can't deep drop. So maybe the adjustment is to bring 8 and a little bit higher on the floor, but then also you got to be tight with the rotations on the backside if Gobert is rolling and but Gobert's just played really great basketball in the past. I don't know like a week and a half. But yeah, I mean, you always keep me on my toes. And I really appreciate that. We have a son's related question coming up that display, but let's go back to the sixers for two seconds. I guess just like. Defensively, is that the biggest concern now for you? I know, I feel like sixers fans are very angry at us because we frame everything from a negative standpoint where we're looking for the flaws in this team, I'm just dubious still because like harden holding up, it's strange. Disbelief for me hardened, just looking so bad and then suddenly looking so good and why like what will it take for either his body to suffer another tissue related ailment or I don't know, something about it at this point is listen, I'll just say I'll just say Mike, I just want to see like I'm a skeptic because frankly. This sounds like such an old man thing to say. I don't know if it's because I'm turning 30 later this year. I just want to see some more like respect for the competitive spirit of the game. That's what it is. Like James Harden, you've put on two teams in a row, you've like time and time again had playoff failures for the last ten years and I'm not one of those obviously there's nuance to those, there's contacts, et cetera, but I'm a skeptic just because I just do you want someone who so clearly quit on two straight teams to like, are you excited about this? How do you get excited about that? How do you get excited about someone who is willing to just give up on his teammates? You know, it was one thing in Houston where although, again, he was the one who, do you look at what happened in Houston, for example, okay? He couldn't get along with Chris Paul, and he said, get this guy out of here. They bring in Russell Westbrook. It doesn't work. He said, yeah, you can trade Russ. And now he's like, I don't think this team can win. I want to get out of here. And it's like, again, like escaping any accountability he had for all the failed partnerships he had in Houston. He says Philly was his first choice. I just have a hard time believing that that was his first choice and he somehow ends up in Brooklyn. But okay, you end up in Brooklyn. Yeah, you're playing with Kevin Durant. He's one of the best players in the game. Arguably the best. I understand this Kyrie thing is literally a once in a century once in a lifetime. Once in a generation occurrence with this pandemic and the vaccination rules, et cetera, he's getting fed up, but we just saw him openly quit on his team in that Sacramento game..

"Existed until you just said his name. Exactly. Outside of duel embiid, the Philadelphia 76 was like when I forgot he played tonight. I swear. When he said when this short on offense, like when it rains it pours for these guys. Tobias Harris, two for 7 -40. This terrible. Nonexistent. I keep my lips feel on him. When this team is vulnerable, it's something that can really capitalize. And this is yeah. Earlier before Bobby came on. I honestly do think this is a message. I'm not a message in though. We'll take care of you guys with a look out for us, where we'll build something here, type of message. Yuck. I wonder if embiid had PTSD from the they always kick our ass when he used to talk about it. It's not a rivalry. It's not a rivalry. They always kick our ass. I love that. 'cause this was a this was a beating. And I don't care if James Harden or not. I mean, this was a beating. Oh my goodness. Yeah. That's what they had coming in. I mean, the missing curry, right? Out of that group and the drum and second unit, and it's mattered. He actually looked pretty good for Brooklyn and his debut too, by the way. So this is the risk that we've taken here is hard and going to stay stable and healthy here and if not, they cut out their debt big time to get him there. Well, Bobby, how are they going to play though, you know? Are they going to give them the keys? You know, are they going to be like, do your thing? That's what he was reportedly complaining about in Brooklyn. What a dog say about that? Yeah, he was just talking about all the different stuff that they can do with those guys together and how that's like the least of their concerns, but it was a lot of chemistry talk. You know, and he's a very honest guy when he talks about his group and what he's doing here. In fact, he said he doesn't know how to use Paul Millsap and he barely played in this game because of it. But in terms of the two guys there, he was saying, you don't know how they were going to respond to his personality and to the way he's going to do things here. There are ground zero there and he was pretty Frank with that. They don't have a lot of time. There just isn't hit right now. And so guys in the practice, like trying to feel off each other and figure out what they're going to do in terms of each other. This is going to be a boom boom boom process here in terms of figuring out how to play with each other..

"Bet online, where the game starts. Okay, the trade deadline was a big game yesterday, bob. You know, a blockbuster with James Harden and Ben Simmons. Simmons Seth curry Andre Drummond a couple of pics. They go to Brooklyn harden and Paul Millsap, go do Philadelphia. I know how you feel about Simmons, how do you feel about this deal? Number one, the big winner in the I told you so category was Daryl morey. He listened to people like me and there were plenty of us who said Daryl, give it up, go 50 cents on the dollar, go 33 cents a dollar, do something, get rid of the guy, you're wasting it's a waste of time. Nobody's going to give you what you want. So guess what? He got a high high profile player back in return just as he said, he insisted that he would. So congratulations to you, you got what you wanted. Okay, now I hate to sound like mister wishy washy, but you can make a case for both teams enjoying what they're going to get. All right, let's start with start with to harden to Philadelphia. What if people talking about all the experts in the cognitive diet the last 18 hours? Oh my God, it's going to be a pick and world arrival. The greatest of all time. They're going to put Stockton Malone in the rearview mirror. They're going on, they're going to revolutionize the pick and roll with those two. We'll see. You know, I see why they think it could happen. If harden is playing well, we know me and beat playing at the peak of his game. And he's arguably the most efficient player in the league at doing what he does over the last month. Nobody's played better than Joel embiid. So he's tremendous. Okay, let's see what Hardin does with this. There's no doubt of his technical skill, but there's something missing. You know, first of all, let's go back up, he's never won it. And he's bouncing around now searching wing searching and all that. He's never won it. And there's something, you know, just something that we'll find out. Maybe Doc can solve the puzzle. I was going to say, I think he has the right coach. I think that when James Harden, the reason I think it'll work with Philadelphia is when he arrived with Brooklyn, he bought it. I mean, we found.

"So that I was just as interesting to think about this from Philadelphia's perspective as I was from how does Brooklyn respond to all this? For sure. So on the Philly side of this, I've seen a lot of cynical understandably cynical. I get it. It's the world we live in. Reactions where people were saying, oh, this all this hard and noise about harden wanting to be in Philly with them beat or whatever. This is just the sixers are putting this out there. Daryl Moore is putting this out there. He's just trying to leverage his position all this stuff. And I get that. It's not coming from there. Like it may also be coming from there, but I've heard this. I'm sure you have to, like, it's other people around the league who are not part of Brooklyn's franchise or part of the sixers who have said they're hearing that James Harden is looking around wondering what his other options may be and eyeing Philly because of the obvious relationship with Daryl morey and a trust there from other years in Houston together. Harden's also tight with Michael Rubin, one of the sixers owners..

"And we know when James Harden left the door open before the season. He didn't sign the extension. There was all the reason the world to say, well, going to free agency is the smarter route financially. You can sign a bigger deal then the idea of him wanting to be a free agent and just test his options because he's never really been a free agent. That part of it, I think we downplayed, but as things unfold, and this happens sometimes, you know, the season takes a turn and suddenly it's not just, oh, I want to resign for the most years and the most money and so I'm just doing this financial reasons. It starts to be, I like the fact that I might have other options 'cause maybe it's not going so well here. And it's an interesting decision because and I'm curious to hear what you think of this aspect of it, but if it's hard and staying to play another X number of years with Kevin Durant and presumably Kyrie Irving, who can also opt out versus playing X number of years with a younger but also an injury history with Joel embiid, that's an interesting choice for James Harden. Where do you think you've got the best chance to win a title or multiple titles, something he does not have yet on his resume? Are you better off hitching your wagon to Kevin Durant or to Joel embiid? Well, there's also the Dara mori part of all this, you know, James Harden has what 7 years of experience playing for a franchise run by Daryl morey. And he knows that in Maury there is an executive that will, you know, do a, do whatever it takes to win at all costs, and B like is willing to kind of build your franchise around him. Now, I don't think harden's foolish enough to think that he goes to Philly and becomes his team, it's Joel embiid's team. Like he is the Philadelphia 76ers. But there's got to be some comfort in going to an organization where you know how things are run from the top down. So that kind of struck me as being advantage for Philadelphia..

"I think that the rent fit in a little bit easier there than he will when this situation yeah I mean there's a reason why the rant wanted to leave what seems to be a perfect situation they you know because he wanted to go somewhere where he could be the man right where he could be the guy who who you know really LED things and ran things and so he's you know the idea was well I'll team up with Kyrie and I'll have a a good guy with me but you know he's talking a good game I'm buying I'm buying into what Kyrie's saying he's gonna set me up and you know I'm going to run this thing and we're going to highest quality of talent and you know Kyrie understands the game and blah blah blah and before you even talk about Harden going into this and let's phone number Kyrie is not played a game I think in the last four games for undisclosed personal reasons is coach doesn't know why why that is what he's doing wage What's going on? He's found last night. Apparently while the Nets were playing a game. He was on a zoom call for the Manhattan district attorney can get this is so just talked about those two. That's the reason why Brooklyn had to make this deal Brooklyn had to make this deal because they can't trust what's going to happen with Kyrie Irving. I mean we got Stephen A Smith saying that the Kyrie Irving Shepherds I shall retire so to hold on Tudor and that's really what I saw a lot of messages about today is to hold on to rant the the Brooklyn Nets had to make this move they had to make a move and they had to get James Harden in here works and all because they had to keep Katie happy and if they can get Kyrie to figure out his stuff and figure it all out, then they they do have a big three-oh weird. They don't have they don't know they got one dead. And they get one guy they can't even count on and that guy that can't count on isn't James Harden. Well, here's yeah I get it and it's funny too because here is Durant, you know paired again with hardened but I don't even know it didn't seem like Oklahoma City really knew how to get hardening Durant and and and Westbrook to be able to play together, right? So how is this going to work? Is it because they're more mature cuz they're older but or was it Westbrook needed to have the ball in his hands all the time to you know, he's definitely ball-dominant, you know lead guard score to write so I don't think that fell out because of not enough touches. I think that fell out because these albums yeah. Yeah. I mean they they had the dog Press two decided he had to make a move preemptively on Harden and they had already re-signed perk and so instead of saying well, you know, we're going to give you know, Harden I want to say it's like 15 million a year..

Have to do something they don't ever nobody wants to go to cleveland. And it really might be time for them to relocate. I mean they have been just drifting. I mean it's really unfortunate that they're still they're better than the pistons right now. And the raptors are to aid wizards at thirty nine or forty seven so at the very bottom. I'm really surprised. They're bound feeding. I'm pretty surprised at the raptors are struggling so much but they had to go through their issues of course So i think what the wait and see with them but huge win for the rockets. I mean i guess it's a win for the nets if that's what they really wanted italy and the the nets are in is in a win now situation which i can understand and to win the east. In fact to use our twenty. Twenty one catchphrase. The nets are down if you if you were in the navy mount them doubling down not definitely did And what a big way and raphael stone double down you know from his free agent acquisitions to this trade. He's really showing that he's the gm of the future and double down. He just really made him really smart mu no eight double down because i think doubling down because of comparative what the former gene did if you're going to be around. He is officially a mauri underlying like he's from the maury tree retreat sorrow. You would think he wasn't underlying you under his. Darryl was still under contract but he chose to step away we went to the toll rant could be around that re be his curls. He's don't black folks okay But here we are couple months later in raphael stone. Who brought in some bigs. you know. Try to to satisfy some important knees that he felt we needed on the tame. Your some shooters you know. Got got into draft. Got some undrafted players that were really good and here. We are now with moving harden restructuring and getting that forty something million dollar contract out the book which is in bring deceived by the way you think about it. He moved both contracts rothe contracts. So you know. That's that's pretty big. You know to forty something made out of contracts. He's moved although we still have one with john wall people right now. There's only making twenty one million dollars yup so somewhere near where we officially. We're back in business. We can if we we don't have cat room. Were closer to being under the luxury tax. Yes now not so much this season but definitely next season so now win that bio market comes in and he was you know waving. We actually might be able to grab a person or two. That doesn't want to go to the lakers. That doesn't want to go to the leykis exactly so the nets this point. Yeah which could happen. It could very well happen. And maybe the rockets say. Hey we'll give all the depot thirty million dollars right now. Give you an extension right now. Four years thirty. Some million abbas kimball. That's still saved them. Fifteen million dollars. Yep so i'm okay with this. If they play a smart. Don't give you a big old anybo. If forty million dollars give him a modest thirty to thirty five over four you know let it let it be what it is. We're not doing. I know max deals or nothing like that. Don't do they call it a day. John wall victor depot. Eric gordon christian. Would you still got. Pj tucker you still got. You still got jason tate. And you got buggy. So i run it the way it is back. All you need to do is add one more big. Maybe a young guy cheap. That can do something. Yeah and run it. The pecking <Speech_Male> order was. He had not <Speech_Male> established that he was <Speech_Male> going to be a <Speech_Male> perennial. Then <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> once you've established <Speech_Male> yourself at that level <Speech_Male> for <SpeakerChange> eight <Speech_Male> years <Speech_Male> it the equations <Speech_Male> different <Speech_Male> so just because <Speech_Male> he's willing to be deferential <Speech_Male> in <Speech_Male> two thousand <Speech_Male> eleven twelve <Speech_Male> does not mean <Speech_Male> that he's <Speech_Male> Gonna <Speech_Male> be willing to do that right <Speech_Male> now. <Speech_Male> Maybe he will. "I mean he has wanted to go to brooklyn throughout this process. I have to believe that he's going into this with his eyes wide. Open a all that being said it's one basketball and you've got durant who is playing out of his mind right now. Kyri we can get back into him. We did this on the previous podcast earlier this week. You can check that out if you want a deeper dive into that. But if kyrie comes back he's volume score not a pure pass first point guard and you have james harden who having the ball in hands for like eighteen seconds on the shot clock on every single possession during his time in houston. So how do you think this mix comes together. What do you think of this deal on the court for the nets. Look at it two ways. There's the scenario where kyri is still there. And there's the scenario where kyri is. I don't know where we know so little about this carry situation. You know why. He's begun as long as he has. What the all of it we don't know when he's coming back we don't know what his mindset is is. He still completely bought in. So let's put that to the side for minute. let let is for. Let's for the sake of this discussion. Just say kyrie irving is back soon. Totally engaged in his all in and that he and katie are still tied at the hip throwing hard into that mix. I think even the best case scenario is difficult for all the reasons you've outlined. He's one of the highest uses players. We've ever seen katie and career both high usage although not hard and levels of usage as i outlined in the story week ago i don't what james harden will do and none of us really know except for james harden what he'll do when paired with other guys who need the ball a lot and how much he's willing to sacrifice he did not sacrifice for russell westbrook for all the discussion of we're friends. We're gonna make it work and everything else russell. westbrook sacrificed in that scenario. Westbrook sacrificed another guy who a lot of us me wondered. Would russell westbrook ever adapt game. Well he did for harden hard and did not harden's usage rate. I think only went up. He did not make with chris. Paul against somebody who was friends with they went two years and then then couldn't wait to get away from each other and he was the one who wanted that. Deal done. Paul for westbrook. So he's thirty one and is this time where he's going to be willing to adapt where we he's gonna be going to evolve where he's going to give up a little too and kyrie and how much are they willing to give up now..

"It was funny when george costanza did it because it wasn't real trying to get fire trying to get moved out. What james harden did incredibly disrespectful. And he's not going to live that down anytime soon. You said you thought the rockets did well. I'm not so sure i love. Draft picks. Believe me and draft picks. Ken pay off. They paid off huge for the boston. Celtics in that previous nets trade. They got jason tatum. I think is going to be an mvp in the league. At some point they got jaylen brown who i think is going to be a perennial all star. This league few other guys mixed in they missed some of those draft picks as well but that was a huge success for boston. But i think sometimes we just grossly overweight draft picks yes. They can be enormously valuable when a confluence of events occurs. And your team goes into the crapper the way the nets did in those those years after the trade with boss but more often than not that doesn't happen and granted anything can happen. Kevin durant could get hurt. James harden continue to sink. We'll talk about this. But the chemistry those players might not work out. But i don't know i'm not foreseeing. The nine four x four years being a bad enough team to make those picks super appealing at this point and given that howard. They didn't get a blue chip guy. Depots good. he's all star but he's not like a guy with this enormous upside he might be able to start once again in houston. Maybe john wall discover some magic in that back core. That's a really fun athletic backcourt. They're put together in houston but they didn't get that blue chip guy and for weeks. I was hearing. That's what they want. Teams that talk to houston said. They wanted a star player. That's why boston wasn't getting in the mix with the celtics rightfully said you're not getting jaylen. Brown jaylen brown. For james harden at this point several teams had a similar mindset when it came to discussing a deal with the rockets for the last few hours before the trade on wednesday. There was chatter about philadelphia. I've got to believe that shatter had some some truth to it. That the sixers willing to part with ben simmons if they sixers deal fell apart because the sixers couldn't create enough draft capital or they weren't willing to throw entire east maxi. I think it's a mistake. I think in d like this. You've got to get the blue chip player. And ben simmons at twenty five years old with. I think at least four years left on his contract so he's not able to go anywhere anytime soon. That was the guy to get the got plenty of draft capital. They are now armed to the teeth for the six. Seven years with draft picks they can use to rebuild this roster and maybe raphael stone is a drafting genius. And he and. Stephen silas can put together a roster that way. But i would have preferred ben simmons. Ben simmons or like to draft picks. Give me ben simmons. All day long..
