The Mysterious Death of Elisa Lam

"Was a sunny sixty six degrees when a Lisa, lamb arrived in Los Angeles on January twenty sixth two, thousand thirteen. It felt vastly different from the frigid winters back home in Vancouver Canada. Lisa was a student at the University of British Columbia. She had decided to spend her winter break traveling up the coast of California by train. This trip was a big opportunity for Lisa. She was fascinated by the film and fashion industries. So what better place to experience both then Los Angeles? Over the past year she'd gained some traction on her blog, a site where she discussed her favorite style and beauty trends. But Lisa also opened up to her followers about her personal life. At Lisa's parents were a recent theme in her blog. They had immigrated from Hong Kong Years Prior, and we're particularly worried about their daughter traveling through America alone. But at least had promised to call them every day to check in operating on a student's Budget Lisa booked a cheap hotel in downtown. Los Angeles about a twenty minute walk from union station. It was called these stay on main, but it used to go by a more infamous title the Sicel Hotel. When Hotel Your William Hanner built the Sel in nineteen, twenty four, he installed its marble lobby stained glass windows and Parisians. Sure. Hanner hoped these ornate features would attract socialites and businessman five years later, the Great Depression hit and over the following decades, the property fell victim to the economic disaster. While glamorous visitors continued to stay at the C. Soul in the nineteen thirties and forties. By the time World War Two had passed most guests were transients or low income citizens of the city. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel gradually became known as skid row it streets hosted thousands of homeless citizens. Skid row grew to be the epicenter of criminal and drug activity in Los, Angeles and the seasonal hotel was at the heart of it. Countless sexual assault cases, several murders, and over a dozen suicides have happened behind its doors Elizabeth short more famously dubbed. The Black Dahlia was rumored to have had a drink at the hotel the night of her murder in January nineteen, forty seven. Whether. Or not. She actually stepped foot into the sea soul her body was found only blocks away. In. One thousand, nine, hundred, sixty to a guest named pauline in dough from the ninth storey window landing on a passer-by. Both people died. In the Nineteen Eighties serial killer Richard Ramirez better known as the night stalker lived at the hotel during one of his murder sprees in return there each night after committing his crimes. It's unclear whether a lease, a new, the properties history, but the neighborhood didn't sound any alarms for her. On January twenty eighth her third day in Los Angeles she checked into the hostile style shared room at the newly rebranded stay on main hotel. On January twenty sixth and Lisa updated her blog. She seemed excited about going to a speakeasy at discreet cocktail lounge where she planned to catch some live jazz. Her next update shared some concerning news. She said she lost a cell phone that evening keyword being A. She wrote that the phone wasn't hers but had been borrowed from a friend. It's not entirely clear if Lisa had another device on hand or needed to borrow this one because her own phone was broken. She had a laptop with her to her blog but complained about the bad WIFI in the hotel. On January thirty, first, a Lisa was switched from shared dormitory to a private room. According to the Hotel Management Elisa's roommates had filed complaints about her odd behavior. Just what this behavior was is unclear even so at Lisa's trip appeared otherwise uneventful until January thirty first, which was supposed to be her final day in Los Angeles. She was due to check out the next morning on the thirty first she visited a bookstore close to the hotel. The shots manager said she spoke to a Lisa who seemed to be in good spirits. At, Lisa told her that she was buying gifts for her family. She was also looking for a book that wouldn't be too heavy to carry on her journey. According to the police the bookseller was one of the last people Lisa had contact with. When a Lisa's parents didn't hear from her that evening they called the Los Angeles Police Department in a panic. Lisa had been checking in daily.

So we know that a person just going to their letters to the shnell talk there or quite there fee or EM DR, any type of there's going to be some improvement. Someone a person who is in the life of someone who they believe has anxiety or has something going on. Maybe it's a worker is, is acting in a way that makes you worry about them or family member or a spouse, what are some signs that, that you can spot or that you can kind of look out for or red flags? And if you see a red flag in think that a loved one or a coworker or someone else might be going through an exciting disorder or OCD than what can you do. Let's just goes for some of the signs, I. Right. So anytime you see a person who is distracted. They might be distracted because they are dealing with intrusive thoughts that they not necessarily because they are just inattentive or not paying attention. So this is like, someone who is chronically the. Distressed by not being able to focus in the tension. And an executive disorder can be anything from social anxiety, which doesn't mean the person is just anxious in social situations. A person with social anxiety means that they actually fear being judged in proceed negatively being criticized, which, you know, a lot of the more popular social, people actually have social anxiety disorder master popular under social doesn't mean they're that they're con-. There's also separation anxiety. This is where they fear something bad will happen to either them or their loved ones if they are separate from the person, and then there's also generalizing zainy disorder which is often a catchall diagnosis for clinicians. You know, I'm just going, I just have say this. There are a lot of patients who are misdiagnose with generalized anxiety disorder when they actually have. Something more specific I had as order or OCD in the Russia now for some of these the notions is not well CD is more is a more severe diagnosis. So I'm going to give you a less severe diners, which doesn't help the person at all. Sure, what's, what would be the motivation behind giving a less severe diagnosis? If the clinicians suspects, something more specific navy because if it's more severe diagnosis than the treatment is more power or difficult..

See I'm putting an extra extra syllable elaborate in this Alaba, okay? So Lisa standing around elevator. Yeah. Which means some of you probably know what we're talking about. Maybe the talk about the death of Alexa, lamb. Okay. So I don't have to ask you what we're talking about today. That was my next cue. I feel like I was robbed you brought it up. Okay. So please inform me about elite at Lisa lamb. So I will get into all of the details of her death a little bit later. But for now what you need to know is that Lisa died at the SEL hotel in Los Angeles is at the hotel the litter. Yes. The cease has a long sorted history. That has become known as L as most haunted building. The see-saw was built in nineteen twenty four by hotel. William banks Hanner Hanner intended for the hotel to be a destination for the social elite and he spared no expense in its design. The lobby alone made mostly of marble cost more than one million dollars in the nineteen twenties. Wow. Yeah. That really says a lot a lot the hotel opened its art deco doors in nineteen twenty seven hotels, beautiful still like 'cause it still like it kept the art deco style. It's really it's really really beautiful was again in Los Angeles, Los Angeles organ so the stores in nineteen twenty seven and then in nineteen twenty nine the depression hits. Sure FOX so that downtown area of LA fell into disrepair and became known as skid row and the cease became a gathering place for junkies, runaways and criminals. Okay. Definitely villa Parton depression it did. So the first documented death on hotel property. On November nineteenth nineteen thirty one w k Norton had taken some kind of poison capsules was found by made a week later in his room. Wow. Okay. Whole week whole week. And not weird. Yeah. I feel like maybe they can only afford to pay made to come once a week. I guess because it's the depression. Yeah. That would make sense that would make a lot like, hey, don't expect your room to be cleaned every day. Yeah. I get that. I get that especially when it's a hotel full junkies in criminals. The nicest hotel, probably not stay that way. In nineteen thirty to twenty five year old Benjamin Doda or dotage shot himself in his room in nineteen thirty four fifty three year old army. Medical corps sergeant Luis de Borden slashed his own throat with a razor in his room. Short three duck snow in nineteen thirty seven grace e Magara fell from ninth story window and landed on telephone wires. She died later on a hospital and police weren't sure if she intentionally dumped accidentally fell or was pushed, okay. Alien by alien Sherston. My not in nineteen thirty eight marine firemen. Roy Thompson thirty five jumped from the top floor and was found on the skylight of neighboring building. Okay. In nineteen thirty nine navy officer Erwin c NEB lit thirty nine was found dead in his room after taking some kind of poison in nineteen forty a forty five year old teacher named Dorothy Skyguide took poison while staying at the hotel, the Los Angeles Times reported that she was near death. But noone further reports wherever made on her. So we don't know if she actually died or not we just think those are really good pasta. She don't have an obituary. I don't know. I didn't don't into that. Okay. Just cut it off on newspaper reports said she was near death in the nobody ever covered it again. Okay. Okay. That's where I'm leaving. That says you probably didn't die. I would assume that the newspaper would say, well, she she died. It's not interesting when this she didn't I right? So what that seven now? Total. Okay, sixteen you don't need to count. It's. Okay. Okay. And then in nineteen forty four nineteen year old Dorothy per cell was sharing a room at the seasonal with thirty eight year old shoe salesman. Ben LeVine, Dorothy didn't know she was pregnant, and then went into labor and she. Yeah. It happens. It is very common actually, very common. So she didn't want to disturb bend because it was the middle of the night, and he was sleeping. Why would shoot? So she went into the bathroom and gave birth to baby. Boy herself the baby was dead..

"Together, we are cincy strong joining us as we wrap up. This nightcap, my friend, Dave Hanner, the mayor of fort right in my IT tech guy fresh from a council meeting. I bet that was riveting. It was absolutely riveting, Gary, Jeff, you can only imagine. We laughed. We cried it ran the whole gamut of emotion. Fantastic. We talked last week about holiday tech gifts, and you gave some great advice. And by the way, also thank you for some help with a personal project. We won't go into I think my wife's asleep. So anyway, anytime anyway. Is it a good idea? I mean, you could say this about any kind of product. But what's the wisdom of say waiting until after Christmas to go and buy that new PC laptop big TV and all the rest of that. Well, you know anymore. I'm not sure there's a lot of great wisdom in that. Because you've got folks like Amazon running these really early specials on five or Monday and black Friday, and that sort of thing, I don't know that you can say that much anymore like you used to in the old days when people would have stopped leftover and they wanted to get rid of it. I think you can still get some pretty good deals 'cause I'm sure that's still true businesses have stuff left over. They wanna get rid of it. They need to space. They don't wanna carry the inventory that sort of thing. But I'm not I don't think you're going to get anywhere near the kind of deals now after Christmas like you did in the past because it's so easy to buy things online, and you've got these mega corporations running unbelievable deal in the United Kingdom. Police investigations into cybercrime are up fourteen percent in the last year. It seems like every time we turn around there's a new phishing scam. There are new hacking efforts and the like, but. They revealed the hack attack. Police under pressure research paper revealed fourteen police forces have launched total of twenty five hundred forty seven investigations into reports of computer and social media hacking over the last two financial years, and I guess this is in Great Britain. Correct. Yes. The Great Britain. But I bet you if we had the statistics handy, they would be similar or even greater here. Because to your point cybercrime continues to rise that article that headline really has to interesting point one is it shows that the number of attacks has not gone down. In fact, continues to go up, but I think also more people are starting to report it at trying to get law enforcement and Paul I think is a good thing. Now, it's bad in a way because law enforcement is typically not really capable of handling these kinds of crime because they don't necessarily have the skill or the resources. I think it's good that people are finally starting to say, hey, you know, I've been defrauded here and if. Nothing else at least by trying to get law enforcement about they're helping to raise awareness. So that other people hopefully, we'll get scam. I think that that metric is good. But yeah, I mean, it's it's gonna get worse before it gets a lot of a lot of these efforts. And you're talking about local police forces, whether they be in the United States or in the United Kingdom or any other specific country. These cybercrimes many times are being committed by people who are not in the same country. Right. Right. So you take going back and forth for a second. We have thirteen police officers. None of them are skilled in cyber security type forensics. And to your point even if they were they've got plenty of other stuff going on in many of the perpetrator not most of the perpetrators are often outside the legal jurisdiction anyway. So you know to really get much satisfaction. You're probably going to the FBI involved. And even then it's often. I'm sorry. You broke up. What did you say? It's often difficult for even the FBI to get these perpetrators there. Another concrete because they're in third world countries where there's no extradition policy. That's one of the reasons why cybercrime is so prevalent. There's no there's no way to catch. These people. Well, I tell you what we'll take a quick break. "So I think there's a bunch of things happening across the different stakeholders on the other hand, as I'm with you in the sense that the I think part of the part of my fears. Full volume. The the sheer volume of of these models will get deployed information. That's why I think actually, I really do think that we need machine learning tools to help us on their machine. Learn that the Nisshin. 'cause I need to look more into that because I don't know enough about what that would look like. I mean, you know the one of the ways that I've been trying to sort of describe my interest in this book. Is those the point where the data goes wrong? Right? The data either amplifies some sort of bias that's floating through society or you know, some variable gets mapped the wrong way or or the person building the model, didn't the assay include the bias in and kind of inspect the underlying distribution of of the trailer Rada or things that excluding some variable is going to mean that you know, longer discriminate against it when in fact, it turns you'd probably have to to code to to compensate for that rather than ignore it. This sort of mechanical. The things that I think are are definitely gonna need to be part of the process of building systems that are that we're gonna corporate. The other part of it that I'm also trying to look at in this book is the way that human beings respond to being given an answer by an automated system. And there are some very well a sound of psychological principles out there that can give us some sense of how people are going to respond when they are told what to do face on an algorithm. So the people who study anthropomorphic ZIM right those the sort of imparting of intention, human attributes to it system say that there's this really well established pattern in that when people are are shown a very complex system and given ZIM sort of exposure to that complex, whether it gives them an answer, whatever it is it tends to produce in human beings, a level of trust in that system that does. It really have anything to do with with reality. They just basically the more complex, the system to more people tend to trust it. And so for me, I'm seeing these instances, I'm trying to sort of document these instances in which people it's not so much what the, you know, the answer that the algorithm kicks out as much as the way that that answer gets sort of grand onto by humans. Somebody just the other day was pointing asked me, for instance, that Peter Dow, the guy who got pulled off the United flight. He got bumped off the flight and then was was beaten up by a couple of security guys. When he when he refused to give up z. that guy's name was pulled out of the system kicked out his name. You know the computer said this guy kick him out, you know, and maybe it was because he pinned the cheapest fare booked at last who knows what the variables were the cosmetics out. But when those two humans, the security guys were given the name by the computer. They went to these outrageous lengths to get him off the plane. They didn't stop and go, is this really a good idea? Should we really Graham, this guy, you know, like. Sure. This is the guy. You know, there's no questioning. They say, computer says, you gotta go, you gotta go and you can see that Hanner echoed all sort of in all these different industries that if a piece of maller piece of kicks out an answer for whatever reason, the human brain goes, I'm not qualified sequestered that answer. I'm just gonna go for it..

Speed are most of the time incapable of. Scene A if the guy really had down be where exactly did contact where was it made the human I, can't capture it I've been. Out of too long man you, can capture it there they basically look at the, reaction in the guy being hit and if it appears that he's. Plastered in his head goes backwards they're, throwing in the flag and a lot of times those are perfectly legal, hits they say they're not going to get it under review If these shenanigans go on during the regular. Season in terms of them. Getting them wrong all the time and they change games. People are going to be turning it off man period I agree, and you're. Going to be mad. What happens? In a late in the game really do what people need. To understand is wins and losses change careers they change lives they changed coaches lives player. Your coach, gets fired guess what half the roster's, going to be out the door as well and that can happen on a team. That has won more. Lost than than, the owner you know the the owners not happy about it, and he's moving people out at the end of the season in a big game something, like that happens, third and fourth, in three? From the forty five yard line under a minute a team down by three and a garbage call like that happens and it's, not reviewable come on man get it right isn't it I always remember and here's the. Problem with the player. Safety but I always remember with going to those officiating meetings this spirit the, biggest the biggest spirit of all the rules is to get it right ultimately get it right it's hard, to get that, one right Well said man hey, thanks we're, looking forward, to another fun year have a great call tomorrow we'll see you, soon enjoy that forty. Let's see that those Anna to see Colton take someone else and then. It does seem odd that he has to either pick leave or youth Tia, because nobody else is under that circumstance. Like, why can't he can't both of them just see where it goes. Why is that? Not enough? And it really does seem to come down to not letting it be, and then the other women and men, they're not letting either. It's like they're putting this extra level of expectation on them like, well, you can't just do this. You have to pick t. r. nobody us. Yeah, it's like, why can't you just hang out in not have seven day cards and just talk to people and be normal. Right. Rose that I have a fever dream or is that live action romance? "Just starts, ironing him, Casey, could you play my messages. Ow. Ow. Sorry. You said to play your messages. Why were you holding me up to your face Casey's earning your face through the iphone. So Hannah in Bricker talking and she's like, guess what noted noted? Haunting. She's like, well, we'll the strange coin key, dinky Honey, dinky the scene is Jawara in and Brooke together. Oh, by the way, someone says saying to why. Wow. So micro aggressions to sorry, Joel. Why is it a micro wise? It microaggressions? Is it. When you when you misuse someone's name on purpose like that, you're like being addicted to their whatever. I mean, I mean, isn't even a micro aggression is just an aggression, subtle lectu out all of a sudden we all know about being my her aggression towards Joel. Yeah, I think we have to leave Joel out of micro aggression talk. That's my vote. He is a micro aggression. He's an aggression. He's macro. He's macro Gretchen. He is. He's a large aggression. So anyway, I don't know why brought that up because I such well, that's why I felt guilty. And then I was like, guess what? I'm not gonna feel guilty for awhile. I'm learning and growing, but not when it comes because his family lineage young, Joe, and like this. Probably several other allows at cetera, whatever I have enough to feel guilty for, I'm not gonna. How about this? How about this? I've been living my life at. I've been very happy and now I've gotta watch on my TV. How about that? That's a micro aggression. Okay. Who's going to me for that? Bravo were waiting. We are waiting hana's like. What a, what? A strange Winky dance that is seen as Julian Brooke together. She's Antar Hanner. Which by the way, because wreck is way more aggressively anti Hanner. Now she's got Joel, you know, whispering with his, you know, it's bad breath into face the whole time. Oh, yeah. Is totally like powering her whatever. I mean, they do this too. I mean, we see this with every head stew. We see it with with cable. There's only been two cayden, Hannah. I'm not gonna include Adrian, but you know, like at the end of a season I refuse out very out, no, but I won't. I like every season they make the chiefs do look so super lazy and then everyone rebels. So she's just playing into it. And of course, we get a flashback of Bugsy from last season being like, if. DV than you do. Yeah. Oh bugs. We miss ya. I'm kinda. Okay. So. Hannah goes into the kitchen and she's like, she's like, yes, what? What? A strange Winky broke his anti Hanner and he's like. Unless you not hear stirring for run ounce, then out of it. Tells us Brits not the first one to say that about hand. I really good at losing earrings and blaming the people getting expensive clothes from deeds, but western falls short. It's being a manager. Yeah, badge of this restaurants just settle down. Okay. You don't just settle down. You're not to that level yet, sir. We hear the sounds of a harpsichord playing mournfully and upstairs broke his like quietly cleaning up for table scape, gathering the pebbles and the little rocks. And she's like. Kathy has. Is Roxana shall gather these rocks like I get the my versions. So. So Conrad goes over to her and he's like, you want to talk show that me talking to, you shall not cause any problems between me and Hannah. It's this and he's such a wuss. He's like, whispering, like what you like to walk. She's Tele ball. The happen to say something, but I'm banging and behead on the brick wall and someone to left me up, not bring own. On hit. Someone to me can embrace man show with imagine the splendor of love, not the misery and bitter masive cold headstone. Have you heard? I'm she, she, she shed. All the jump stones and little rocks and chairs, and that that all women could ever want. And he's like, honner is Ana, you don't wanna change, move on and then Hannah sees them talking. She's the goyim sophisticated pro with is consoling me enemy have haven. On back. So. Cowan with. And Conrad says, come back where they quit with them out, so should all its high love taste..

"I'm already sucked in so cool. That's right now a let you guys know how I feel about it. Recommend artists that finished up, gone girl, and then we watch. We watch the movie and I just got to say like Ben Affleck is like deep perfect casting for Nick done like the even the cleft chin, like it's just so perfect and that movie everybody in that is fantastic except for Neil Patrick Harris. It's still don't think that he is like right for that role, whatever. No, but yeah, no, everyone else's fucking perfect. Like. Well, obviously, Roz mcpike. My wife is absolutely no one else I could've played that like, oh, yeah, stunning Tyler Perry being in the he's he's so perfect as what's his face on my own my God. I just fucking right now at Hanner tender bowl is the perfect Tanner bowl. Everyone is great. What's her face for the leftovers being his sister. Perfect. Yeah. So I would recommend reading that and watching that because that from what I've seen is bio- very long shot. My favorite Gillian Flynn content. Yes. Ah, let's let's spill some tea on that. This controversial episode, I feel really flawed opinion. We're watching sharp objects like the rest of the world. And that's another Jillian fund book. If you didn't know it's her first. Oh, that's I, I'm pretty sure that one's her first. Then gong girl then, but I could be. So gone girl. I read loved movies, great. Then I tried to read dark places and I could not get into it. I give an example. Like, what is it briefly? I don't even okay because I have no idea what that one another, like small town, dilapidated town. It'd be her shit. I didn't know. Sharp objects was going into it, but I didn't wanna look anything up. So then we're doing that and like the first Assode hooked me. I was like, okay, this is going to be darkest, fuck, but it looks like it's going to be sweet. It's really fucked up that, like you're saying that it's darker than Handmaid's tale. I wouldn't even say, starving, Handmaid's tale. I just think it's harder to watch and ham, and that's saying something tell us hard. Watch this one. I just feel like it's almost just like gruesomely dark just for shock value, and I get that like the book is also written this way, but I dunno, I dislike. Honestly. Okay. I ball someone explained to me why they would put trigger warnings at the end. I know filling we've discussed this maybe not like can someone explain. Yeah, nobody's sticks around for the credits come on and I would highly highly highly recommend you be careful watching it if you struggle with. So a lot of things, a lot of things you should just sexual assault and self harm. Please just be fucking careful slash tune 'cause it's their present. There's a lot of these usual very graphic and knock grade. I have a lot of hard time watching it suicide as well. Yeah, it's so good acting superb, cast superb visually besides being graphic as fuck is good. Yeah, it's it's the same guy that did big little lies and you can tell it's exactly like big. No. I mean, like big little lies is so much brighter because of the scenery. This is like literally like shades darker like actually there's barely any. Scenes in daylight, like it's usually her in the car at night, but you Get get you you get get. you gotta sit more vibe of in the filming style from white. Yes, to shows. Yeah. So my issue with it and then I get. So I didn't read the book. So I know a lot of people will be like, well, of course you think it's lobes read the book. I still think it's an eight episode miniseries and it's just going to be that because it's just one book. Right? And it's. Could contend? No, no, no. It's a murder, mystery kind of thing. I'm not going to give away any spoilers, but a could've easily just been five episodes because I got to the point where I've been just so frustrated with how each episode is literally, just like we're going to displace him gruesome shit. And then the bitch is going to roller skate. Amy Adams is gonna drink in her car, and there's going to be a lot of gossip and adore is gonna say some fucked up shit and that the cop and there's, there's not a lot of action, propelling the plot, and there's a little bit of subtlety here and there..
