That's that's actually a funny Interesting interesting thing. Though that he is Twenty four straight and all star teams over twenty seasons but mays became the first player in history over to hit over thirty home runs before the all star game and he had thirty six home runs through july twenty eighth around that time. "In this case. A lineup of theseus. This question comes from chris who says the twins have had a lot. Go wrong for them. The season but one of the most frustrating has been injuries eight of the nine players from their opening day. Starting lineup have been or are on the i l. and their current roster has very little in common with what they started with. This made me wonder how many teams have fielded a lineup where it was completely different from their opening day lineup and none of the players matched who had happened the fastest and like the ship of the exercise. How much is this the same team now. I have a follow up based on that. What baseball teams opening day lineup contributed the least to a full season success. Bonus points for who did it while still making the postseason. I will stop this email now before it spins off into another half dozen stop s so the twins certain they have been hard hit. I guess if you look at the baseball prospectus. I l ledger. Actually don't really stand out in terms of days missed or wins above replacement player lost so many teams have been hurt. They do have ten guys on the al as we record here on thursday afternoon they are maybe getting a little healthier. Cantona's back reese arises back max kepler's about to be back byron. Buxton seems to be nearing a return but they've also had some new injury strike. Michael pineda rob. Schneider just went on the i l. Josh donaldson and andrew. Simmons left wednesday's game with injuries. So it's not looking great there many other things have gone wrong for them. But it's true that there have been a bunch of guys from that opening day lineup. Who were very quickly removed from their lineup. So i sent this to frequent stat. Blessed consultant robert nelson ran all the numbers and really went above and beyond tear in answering of chris questions. So reading from ryan's response here. It turns out that. This seems much rarer than i thought only one hundred sixty six times in. Mlb history going back to eighteen. Seventy one has a team run out a lineup where zero of the nine hitters played on opening day for that team. That is just point. Oh four percent of the time the majority of these come late in the season sixty percent came after game one. Fifty and eighty percent came after game. One thirty. my instinct is that these are mostly september. Call up lineups where they what. A bunch of kids play. Since the team has had contention but there were nine times that a team ran out a no overlap before game one hundred and he whisks them here. I will put all of the data for this online for anyone. Who wants to look at all the specifics. But the nineteen fifty one chicago cubs were close to the quickest june twenty. Second to june twenty. They're fifty six fifty seventh and fifty eighth eve's they had no overlap lineups. This is the second earliest ever to have won. Here's the opening day lineup. And the reason for missing games fifty six to fifty eight so weaned will occur. The second baseman was traded to brooklyn. Frank bomb holtz rightfielder off days. Hank sauer leftfielder off days. Unknown could find no mention. of the. 'cause bill serena third baseman injury fractured wrist sliding into second andy. Path co center. Fielder was traded to brooklyn d. Fandi for spaceman was sent down to triple a roy. Smalley shortstop was out with an injury. An ankle fracture rube walker. The catcher was traded to brooklyn and frank. Hiller the pitcher was just in the rotation. He just missed those games. So this was mainly caused bay. June fifteenth blockbuster trade with the dodgers johnny schmitz rube walker andy. Path go and waned her. Wilbur were traded by the cubs to the dodgers for. Eddie mixes bruce edwards joe hamilton. And jean her manzke so that accounted for a lot of that turnover there but this was not the earliest or weirdest. No overlap lineup. That would go to the nineteen twelve. Tigar's who on may eighteenth twenty-ninth game of the season throughout quite the lineup. For this one it was easier to explain who was in the lineup that day rather than who was missing and this is a a famous game which we have talked about before the tigers lost twenty four to two and he passes along the reason for this which we have discussed in previous podcasts on may eighteenth nineteen twelve. The tigers players went on strike to protest the suspension of star center. Fielder tie cobb. Who had gone into the stands on may fifteenth to attack a disabled fan who had been abusing him rather than four fit the next game. The tigers sent out a team of replacement players. Mostly local college sandlot players but also including tigers coaches joe sucked in and forty eight year. Old deacon mcguire manager hughie jennings also entered the game as a pinch hitter. Starting pitcher allan travers gave up twenty four runs on twenty six hits in a complete game loss. Both american league records. So that's a pretty famous one if you count that twenty. Nine games into the season is the record. If not fifty six. If we go by the twins achievement only one player from the opening day. Roster remaining is much more common but still not very it happened. Twelve hundred ninety six times that point. Two nine percent of games has happened at least once in one hundred nine of the hundred twenty seasons since nineteen hundred including every season since nineteen fifty eight except the shortened nineteen ninety-four and twenty twenty seasons again. This usually happens later in the season. Sixty seven and a half percent of the time. It happened in game one thirty or later but has happened pretty early in the season as well is happened. Thirty nine times in teams first sixty games and five times in teams. I thirty games and the fastest time.

Of course, homicide detectives were out here. There's police are still out here trying to find some clues exactly what happened here. I did also shut down traffic both north and south bound on late or drive. Our police in the area, so it is going to be kind of slow going through this area, especially as Russia are kicks off. Do. Police have any idea of whether this is gang related? Whether there was road rage involved whether these people knew each other anything on that yet? Not yet, And I mean, we don't even know where the shots were actually fired yet. I mean, they could have been downtown. They could have been in one of the, uh, you know, neighborhood streets here in the Gold Coast and then and I'll make sure um, so you know, it's hard telling right now, obviously, a lot more is going to come out later today. I like what you said in your last sports report, Dave that how did you phrase it? It's very strange when the Cubs and Sox both lose now, what kind of shows how far they've come. It's like a shock with Yeah, both lose. That's really a statement. When you think about the history and how I used to be. Yeah, and, uh, what did I see that there is some hope that Eli humanness make, uh, might come back sooner rather than later. Well, what they've said, is that he has been cleared to resume baseball activities. Of course he's been out all season. And his first step is going to be to go to Arizona and go through basically getting himself back into baseball condition, but there's still no timetable. The White Sox said in a statement that this prep next step should be about a four week process. So Right now. We're in the middle of June, right? So you're looking at maybe after the All Star break sometime, he could go on a rehab assignment if the doctors and the medical The athletic training. Folks think he's ready to do that. But that doesn't mean he's immediately. Back, ready to go for the White Sox. So it's still a ways off. But it's certainly encouraging the fact that he gets this clearance to proceed and take the next step. I can't remember all the sax players are out. Well, I mean, the The Big Three are Jimenez, Luis Robert. And, Of course, the most recent one. Nick Madrigal. Those are the most significant Michael Kopeck is still out. But he is expected back at at some point not too far down the road. That was a A hamstring with him by as for the Cubs is still Yeah, he's still injured his thunder, and maybe the I think it was the Saturday night game. When he went after a ball. I think near the stands, but anyway, he's Yeah, he's been dealing off and on with this thumb now for What? Over a week not on the injured list, but yeah, they've certainly would like to get him back out there. Another day in baseball and other Patrick Wisdom home run. Did it again last night? Didn't he did it again last night in the seventh, And of course, it was not enough. And that is nine home runs in 20 games. That's That's the most By a cub in his 1st 20 games since Hank Sauer hit 10 in 1954. And don't start with the You remember that don't you buy, aren't you? Didn't you interview him? Bob? "With Friday night. We celebrate Willie Mays, man and anybody who's put on the Giants uniform like you come through the ballpark. You don't have to play with him. You don't have to see him play, but you Show up in your a giant. Everybody's got a story about Willie Mays. I imagine building at some point you walked into the clubhouse and and there he was duty, maybe in unison with the high pitched voice talking to you. What? You have a background Willie Mays story first time you met him you can share with me did well, you know, back in the early eighties, they used to have the all time risking right old timers game and you see Willie McCovey. Gaylord Perry. You see all these guys in uniforms and it go out to this old timer? Gaming. You're sitting there going? Oh, my God. That's Willie Mason. You're not the bat and swing, you know, And the biggest thing I always say about Willie Mays is the first time I shook his hand. His hands are so big, so strong and powerful and you just go on my goodness. Look at this man. He is such a strong person. And one of the greatest guys, If you sit down and talk to him, his memory is just unbelievable about things he did. I've gone to several different events and literally sat next to him. And Renee who takes care of him and we've sat there 15 20 minutes and we'd start talking and people would just come around us and listen. And he'd always say it. Just just listen. Don't talk. Let me talk, you know? Hey, let him talk. You know his story just on point about everything and That's what's great about Willie Mays. You know his stories and all the things he did, and the players Jackie Robinson stories toe all the different players that he played with back in the New York Mets days and coming over here, Hank Sauer stories and, um, it's just a pleasure to listen to him. And he's turning 90 years old and You know some of the things he's doing now he always wanted to go to college. Now we setting up college scholarships for kids, and he gives Maura than people ever would believe in. This man just does it from his heart. He's got a golden heart. What a great great superstar the Giants will always have in their in their back pocket. You know, we know that everything you just said, is true bills because nothing you've said, is different from how anybody else talks about Willie Mays. Nobody says the same thing about you for 90 years, and it's It's fake. You know what I mean? Like that's legit, like Willie Mays is that you're still making a difference in kid. Lives, so it's great that he's made this impact. I'm lucky is a 32 year old to get to see Willy Mays at the ball park all the time, right to get to see all these hall of Famers around and Adam when you start looking at what he's done in, Yeah, you're just like my goodness. You know, this guy is just the best player ever. And, you know, you think about it into just thinking about Jodi Module on Mickey Mel? No, this Willy man, Willie Mays and to say, Hey, kid, and all the other things and You know, Mike Murphy was the clubhouse attendant for so many times so many years, they'd be in their office talking all the time. And Murph has so many great stories about all the people, but he is just like Willie Mays is the man and and I think that's all giant fans will always remember him as that's why he's got the statue out front of 24. Willie Mays Plaza, Right field 24 palm trees around If that's what's cool, and I think we can go 24 FT. High Wall out in right field. I think that's I think that's true, too. So, yeah, I think so, too. Anyway. All good stuff. Well, thanks so much. For coming by again. It will catch up with you again. Middle of the season did always great chatting with you, my friend. Take care yourself. All right. Great stuff from the great Bill Lasky. Fun talking. Ah, Giants baseball would bill all the time anyway more coming up..

"Books Chicago Cubs, the big 50 and looks at 50 different stories or moments in the history of Cubs baseball. Ah, lot of great hits here, including this little ditty. I hope we get. I didn't get the pump it up than 3000. People show up everything. You know how this ends. That, of course, is Li e Li of the famous rant and it's in Carrie's book, Carrie. Welcome to W G and I hit the wrong line here. Carrie, I'm sorry. Hi. How are you? Carrie? I'm very good. Thanks, Steve. Thanks for joining us. I appreciate it, Jeff. I might have the wrong line up here. I'm hitting the wrong buttons. Okay. Um All right, Carrie, I'm so sorry about that. We're still learning how to mute during Zoom calls. I've been doing this long enough, though, Were you weren't around for the Lelia rant where? You know, I was not. I'm not That? No. I mean, I wasn't having been covering the team that long. I started with the Cubs in 87 0 in 87. Okay, so I was talking earlier with some of the guys off the air. Do you remember Bob Greenberg? Um, no, no. Doesn't know. It was a reporter for WB. Easy and he was blind. Oh, yes. Okay. Remember, Bob? Yeah. I don't know why that came to me. But okay, so tell actually, if you um one of the chapters in the book is on Pat Hughes on and what I did was I X instead of talking to Pat. I talked to Craig Lynch. Who's a blind broadcaster who does a lot of freelance work, and he sees the game through past uses voice. So So what I tried to do with this is you know, a lot of people have heard. A lot of the stories about Ernie Banks and all on a lot of these people, but so I tried on some of them to take a little different tack. And Craig was just so he and Pat had this amazing little report where they get together before games, they would have a little trivia contest between the two of them. But but for Craig happy Hughes, his voice and his descriptions are so key and it just just to me was really just a beautiful way to kind of on a radio. I've always appreciated the radio broadcast. I bet Pat absolutely loves that too. That's a real tribute to him. Um Okay, So I'm just run down some of these names and you're gonna tell me the story. Some of them I've lived. Uh, For example, Rick Monday. Yeah, with the flag. Yeah, he saved saved the flag when he was with playing in Dodger Stadium swoop down to fans Look like they were going to set it on fire. And he and what I like. Is that he now goes and raises money takes takes the flag has it goes and does different charity events. We can raise money for veterans groups. Good for him. I mean, that made him such a hero in L. A. That they ended up. I don't know if they sign it was a free gin or the Cubs traded him out there. And is he still a broadcaster for the Dodgers broadcaster for the Dodgers? Really classy guy, So it doesn't surprise me that he did that. When I was a kid, he was my favorite cup. And in fact, I even saw his wife once on the Joker's wild. Game show that so I'll never forget those things. Okay? Merkel's boner? Yeah, that's that's a complicated story. We might want to skip buttons of rookie rookie mistake, right? Yes, it wasan and it's good, I guess What part of the reason that that's included is that it's It's something that's related to the Cubs. And it also sort of trying to get these tried to explain. It is briefly as I could, but it xylitol just bonehead s. So how did you decide to tell me the these air 50 stories or 50 events? What was the 51st? What's the one that you wanted to get in and maybe just couldn't? Well, actually, I think when people see the book, they'll see that I sort of snuck a few extra in there. We went over this. I went over the 50 so because well, yeah, just that they're not numbered. So there's There's some such for example, Ken Hubbs is the second basement that died in a plane crash and I've I've always been intrigued because Ron Santo had said that He said. We'll never know how good this kid could have been. He was one the rookie of the year and then and then died and tragically, and that was it. And you just you just never knew. Or Hank Sauer, who was, uh M v P and was called the mayor of Wrigley. You know what is the way that he would entertain the fans and the futures and his interactions? So I so hope so that there's you know for 51. You know, I've always wanted to a chapter on Sean on the show no meter, right from Sean done to, so I was finally able to track down the people that came up with that and add a little sort of sidebar on that. So besides It's kind of considered a bonus. You get 50 men and moments and then you get certain bonus check. Right. So you've got your little insects on some of the pages. That's what you're talking about. Okay, so I've spent a lot of rainy days and nights at Wrigley Field, but two of the rainiest were once in the book, and I don't think the other one is one is the 1990 All Star game. But on Carrie, you know, I didn't read the whole book. I've been coming through it. It doesn't look like you included. The first night came in the book That's actually Chapter four. Chapter four, right? Said scepter for that such all 88 88 there it is right there. Okay? Yeah. Blame the editors for the headline so but because that was what I thought was interesting. I tracked down Chuck Cottier, who was one of the Cubs coaches for that team, And he told me and I guess I didn't know this. He told me that the night before they had a workout to sort of tests the lights. And realize that they couldn't see And they told the Cubs officials like hey, you know the lights are great, but we're supposed to play tomorrow night, and we can't see the ball so they had to do a whole bunch of tinkering to get it to work. And then, of course, they had the rain in the fourth inning, And that's the end of that. You know, I was a street reporter for W. G and then and I was covering the anti lights crowd fact, Congressman Mike Quigley was worked for Bernie Hanson, the alderman, then Yeah, And so that was my beat. So I knew all about them and I'm in the game. It starts raining and I get a call or something. I don't know if I had herself one than what it was, but, you know, they said, Get up to the booth. Everyone were trying to kill time. So I go up to the G. M. Broadcasting Booth and Harry Carey wasn't doing the TV. It was a national TV call. So he's in the radio booth. And it's Me and Chuck Swirsky and Harry Carey and And I think Chuck or someone, said Steve Burke. Trans here, He's covering the neighborhood. And my first line was well, There are a lot of people happy to see it raining right now. And Harry Carey turned and gave me a look like Who the hell are you? You punk kid? Bill Murray. The comedian was in the back of the booth, and he assumed as cyclists. Through that sentence. Phil Bradley hit the home run off of Sutcliffe. Bill Murray's in the back of the booth saying, you know, turn off the lights. Turn off the lights. So you know you weren't the only one. Well, let me tell you something. I'm no Bill Murray Kerry, Especially Mary Carrie's eyes. Well, that's Well, see now, and I have a chapter on Harry..

"The Cubs are on their way way. 7 21 and with us is someone who has covered the Cubs for the last 30 years. Carrie Musket who's got a book out called the men and moments. It made the Chicago Cubs the big 50. Hi, Carrie. Hi. How are you guys? Happy opening day? Yeah, it's a typical Wrigley Field opening day and more like bears weather. I love the book. I love the book. Carrie. There's so many Cubs books, but I think this is the best of all of them because If you're AH, fan going way back, you'll love these stories. And if you're a recent bandwagon jumper, it's great is only assault as a zoo. It is And if you can only buy one Cubs history book, I think this is the one you really did a great job because, uh, it was fun to try and come up with When they first gave me the assignment. I sat down and I was watching a day game and it was pretty easy to come up with 50 men and moments. But of course, you could come up with 59 moments from just the 2016 season alone. But but no, it's kind of it's kind of fun to pick out what we put in all right, and I love the little sidebars you have in here like you've got a page devoted the Eddie better, which is a lot of fun and the introduction by Anthony Rizzo. You know what I remember when? When Rizzo first came to the Cubs and Peter Chase that covers media relations Guy was taking him around. I think of the Cubs convention, and I was talking to Peter and Peter pointed at Rizzo, who was signing some autographs or something. And he said, This guy's the real deal. Watch him, and he sure turned out to be right. He's like the new Mr Cobb, isn't it? Yeah, he's evolved into that. And I've been fortunate enough to go with the Anthony and some of this hospital visits at Lurie Children's Hospital and also attended some of a lot of his fundraising events down in Florida and it Zoe so genuine. I think that's the thing that that always struck me about Anthony is is there's no, There's no phoniness here. This is genuine and again. It's the man's a cancer survivor and hey knows he knows he goes over four during a date. It's not a big deal. His battled a lot worse things and he's just he's just such a big, lovable person. It was I was very happy that he was willing to do the forward. But of course, he would do it only if I promised him a chapter s o. He is chapter 44, which is appropriate. And of course you have champions devoted to banks and San Oh, and Williams and Fergie Jenkins and the 1969 season and the reason and tell me if you go along with my theory, the reason why I think those guys will always be beloved. And when the Cubs won the championship in 2016 people were saying, Well, that's it. There will be no more reminiscing about 1969. Not true. And I think it's because those guys really became ah, part of the community, didn't they? Yeah. Yeah, And I know Santo told his. I talked to Santo's daughter, Linda about him for the chapter, And she said that they were never really allowed to talk about the 69 team at home. But he did. He did say that that was the team. They may not have won, but he has made his best friends for life. From that team, and I think that really says a lot about the group. It's always amazing to me to talkto Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins and realize that what keep moment they were part of in Chicago Cubs history. Care with limiting yourself to 1/50 of the moments in the event. I mean, it's like, how do you do that? I mean, because there's such a great history of this ball club. Well, and you, probably Mass is very hard for me. So that's like a radio. But I have 50 moments, but I also was able to sneak in those sidebars. So actually, it's kind of 50. Plus because I really wanted to do something on Hank Sauer and I really want to do something on Ken Hubbs but couldn't quite bump them up to the one of the main chapters. So we were able to kind of sneak that so it's kind of 50. Plus, so hopefully fans don't hold me to the to the number. So Andy you could have written. The site should have asked you for For like 50. I bet you could come up with 50. I'm thinking it's like I have, like 45 in my head already. Yeah, just just by sitting there talking again. Yeah, on you have a chapter devoted tonto El Mago. I'll be by is and now this guy because of his enthusiasm and love of the game. He's hard not to like right, Carrie. Yeah, he is, and it's what I've liked, and I guess because I've been around the team for so long. It's been fun for me to watch some. Watch him. People like him. People like Anthony Rizzo, watch them grow up. Is intended to see him evolved from being this sort of wild swinging infielder from Puerto Rico. Dealing with issues with his sister, who, unfortunately passed and then suddenly becoming the superstar during the playoffs and 16 and face of baseball for a little bit. I mean, it was The guy's just so super talented and okay still is a wildly swinging infielder from Puerto Rico. But, um, I just think that there's some really good things ahead for Javi. It's nice for me to even think that disguise. Finally a dad. He's got two kids. Now it's zest. I guess I've become people ask me who's your favorite cub? I can't pick one. It's like picking your favorite child. You know, they're all they're all my favorites. Of course you're right about Harry Carey and Jack Brickhouse. And don't you think that Brick house because of the wildly successful years of Harry Carey and the WGN superstation and the Cubs, Fielding better teams and Harry's Day, that brick house sort of got for gotten sort of overlooked for his contributions. Yeah, I think people that no, Jack no. How hard he worked and how talented he was and how he could handle so many different events. I mean, he covered political events as well a sporting events and did it all so professionally and I, That's That's another generation. I guess that that would would really to that. What I also tried to do you know, you mentioned people like like, okay..

"In Giants KBR weekend for us, Mr Marty Loury joining us on the home, I guess lying here on the SportsCenter, Marty, It's always a pleasure to talk to you, sir. How you doing? Very good run. How you guys doing here in Arizona? Oh, lucky, lucky you. I'll ask you the same question as Joe Rich So, Ah, week 10 days ago. Are you How cool is that? First off to just have fans there instead of cardboard cut outs? And, you know, just to get that that natural organic kind of ballpark buzz. It's not as loud as you would normally because you don't have the same amount of people. But just any human being there. Watch it sounds It sounds like a good good thing to me. No, absolutely. It gets the players into it the coaches into it, and you're just not looking at some an adamant object in the stands, even though I like my cut out. I was right next to Adam Copeland. And every time there's a right handed hitter up, I saw myself but we need fans of the game. And the Orange tear is coming up. Hopefully for San Francisco, which means about 14,000, hopefully for for opening day, So I think they're good things ahead. Yeah, from your lips to God's ears. So the first time I've had a chance to talk to you. I'm gonna do a question of you don't have to various people. Buster Posey as one hobby. Lopez. We've been having a debate about it here in the last few weeks, But where do you stand on this shift? And the seeming changes that are coming because it sure looks like Major league Baseball is going to do something. You know whether it's a little bit or a lot with the over shifting. It seems to be a problem for the higher ups in major league baseball. Where do you stand on it? Yeah. I'd like to see it where they have the foreign fielders on the dirt on even two on each side and let the pendulum swing back a little bit. Uh, to to baseball, You know, I watched the game last night, right? And, you know, in the inning where the Giants were there, three runs, there was a pop out. And three walks a strikeout. Wild pitch, and then Solano got his double, Then another strikeout and I the end. He must have taken 30 minutes and the two baseballs were put in play, So I think you need to get that back into the game and if it requires getting the shift out of the game That's what's got to be done. And, plus the pictures. They're so much better. Now you got every guy throwing 97 or 98. The pictures really have taken over the game, so I think the hitters need a little bit of help to get that part of the game back on the field. Amazing as a kid. If you had a cheat sheet, you were cheating. But if you're a major league baseball player in 2021, you have a cheat sheet. You're not cheating enough with the cheat sheet sucked. I want see guys going to their hat in their back pocket for From notes either yet digest the notes between the innings and if you got it, you got it If you can't remember it. Well, look at it a few more times. I mean, the notes is so 2021 That's just mean. Come on. I mean, could you imagine if Willie Mays had notes? If you watch the old the old you know, Giants footage, they got footage of maize, literally pointing McCovey here pointing Sapyta. They're telling the fielders where to position all based on not analytical data, but his experience. Now we've got some guy taking out his note card and how many things can he write down on a car? I mean, it's just it's cheesy and and that to me is also giving the defense an advantage and I'll I'd like to see the offense get a little bit more of an advantage back. Well, the world has changed and all this information is available and they have your last 10,000 bats and where you hit the ball and where you'll hit it on the field against the slider in a 31 count of that kind of thing. That's the world we live in today, and I think we have to get used to it in baseball. It's not going away The information highway and baseball is is greater than ever. And I always use that example. You know, we watch the old movies of Apollo this some of the space shots and you know, they show the work room, you know, with 70,000 people in front of computers and headsets and all that on That's what a baseball front office looks like. Today, you open the door, and there's there's 2000 people trying to figure out where you're going to hit the ball that if a hitter doesn't Marty, whatever hitter doesn't would have all of sudden during the at bats, the guy backs out and he takes out a didn't take out a card. He takes a little book, and then he's like, Okay, 31 against this picture. He's thrown me a change. All right. I'm back in there. Now put my book back and I mean, I get it. The information's here. But if we want a faster, more action packed game to me, you know, eliminate anything that takes takes me into dressed lag time. That's one of them. Yeah, that is one of them. And you could eliminate it, You know? Hey, the old hitting coach used to Hank Sauer. Someone like that left the old duel. The old timers used to take you out. And Jack Clark used to tell me he'd fly in. And the Hank Sauer would meet him and take him to one of those batting cages and put quarters in the machine and work on his swing. Well, the batting coach today. The batty coach today is not like that. He's got a binder like we had in college. And every page of the binder is Aziz. You versus the pitcher and certain counts. And they go over that before you get up there. They should be able to remember it. So I'm with you. I think we can do without the image of taking a card out and looking at it and then either getting back on the mound there in the outfield or at the plate I could do without it. Give me Ah young guy that you're looking forward to sing and an old guy you think is gonna Let's start some some emotions that Giants fans haven't felt in a few years. Sure, I think on the young side, the one guy who has stood out eyes Ramos and he still raw, very raw as an outfielder will overrun the ball, Who Go to different routes in the outfield and he needs a lot of work in the outfield. But he's fearless at the plate, and I think he's a right handed hitter. He can reach the seats. At Oracle, and I think he's he's the real deal, and I think we shouldn't put too much pressure on him because he's still very raw in the outfield. I'm not sure he's a center fielder. And I think he'd be the one guy this year that I can almost guarantee will be up in the big leagues. On the other side. It's interesting. Two of them one is Longoria. I mean, he looks so good at the plate. And you know the swing is there..

That song, the heat is on it was on. Because then then things that I had learned with the giants and playing for with for under Joe Morgan who came from the big red machine things that he taught me by the way I know he was a very good friend of mine as really sad to hear about his passing the other debt love Joe, and he was the most important and influential person in my. Baseball life and career coming from San Francisco played there. He helped me. He showed me what it was like the biggest compliment. He ever gave me even years later when I was doing some radio and I did his radio show number time. So the best compliment Jack I give you. You could have been on the big red machine while and I'll because he always said everybody should have opportunity to play with sparky Anderson for Pete. Rose. That was him saying that and the things he told me what he would do with Johnny, bench and twenty and give them signs. And it was really helped me and that home run I ended up hitting against the dodgers was with Joe Morgan Bat. That M to fifty three is joe mortgage mouth that Emma's for Morgan to fifty three. "Yeah, I remember that man hitter to the power hitter Johnny Leon Leon Wagner with the Giants couple of left handed power hitters that there's just no room for guys like that on the team is loaded with the Giants. How about this one? Hank Sauer and Jimmy Davenport. Both had 12 home runs at the end of that year. Yeah, Amazing. Well, Willie McCovey came up in flea, Pollux threaten to go back to AA. The Dominican Republic unless they kept him on the active list and he actually left for three days and they brought him back and to bring them back. They said the Hank Sauer, you're now a coach and I was the end of Hank's Our So there was one picture. That was one picture that had one home run. But of course, Basin soup. Ader, where the league home run hitters. That was a hell of a line if they threw out there Willie Kirk. Oh, yeah. Traded. I think for safer Harvey Keen ground. You know, I never believed in printing. Ah, lousy quote. Like well, we swung the bats pretty well today, but that's don't put it in there. You just don't use it, but But those guys would really have, you know, great perspective on things and with some humor and Then they just the crooked cop. They talk baseball. That's what so many people interviewed for this story. They always come back here. They're just talking to you. It's like they're in the living room with you talking ball, and there's no manufactured announcer voice is on the bottom of the seventh inning. You know, it's true. This is true. "You gotta take a Marshall Gibson in Sebring Pedro Martinez and Bob Feller yeah and satchel Paige but yeah I think we do and then mine mostly because he was he was center for this guy he is a great story about him on the on the go on the golf course see some guy was saying that we had three guys in when we were about to tee off we really wanted to get a fourth and always and this guy shows up because even if I if I come in and join you guys again yeah sure you know they didn't know who he was and he didn't say a word the whole round he didn't do anything spectacular he was like one under he was just he was just so he was completely good in the in the manner of you know finance and professionalism and I saw I saw an awful lot of Matix and you know it's I think somebody mentioned maybe game two was it of the ninety ninety six World Series I was at that game and you know we're at Yankee stadium here in this the Braves in the Ericsson he just competes just shut them out in the rains and blogs and Tino Martinez infielder in Paul o'neill and and just walked off with a complete game full service so well done I think you know what when you look at it Marchand Gibson these guys Clemens it paid or they were so small they were just spectacular other stuff was just mind blowing you're trying to think who who have stuff like this that I've ever seen you know I don't know if you really said that with Matix except next thing you know he just be you Hey anyway all the way and see you later they needed that time after time he had a seven year run mostly with Atlanta where is the R. M. server was under three the winner was a one point six three and just so masterful I mean yeah that's what a lot of guys today when you see so many pitchers going under with Tommy John surgery and so many of the really hard throwers are going down they really should go back and look at this guy and how he changed speeds with his fastball and it never looked like he was throwing as hard as he could but he he had something in the low nineties he had some in the in the high eighties maybe even down lower than that and he was always mixing it up and keeping you off balance which is the whole essence bill as you know of pitching mmhm well the second SystemC of going out after start after start throwing the change yeah off the corner off the edge go a little farther and Bruce and Marty we always talk about the old time homebuyers you give me an answer I'm gonna keep going that far there and show you called a ball and if you don't I'm going right back there when I need to because that we got him out anything extractions in the US you Bruce didn't throw like an eighty one pitch complete game one time is under two hours I hope so I believe it was I believe it is and and I was astonished yeah it was really like an hour and forty minute game and there was like a two to one game in the future like eighty one pitchers are all up to look into it but he was phenomenal about to strike so and he went knee high he'd go below the needed rise the ball a little bit and he looked like he was never swatting here was like he was just simple stuff and to pinpoint like he did just like Tom Glavin did they both pitched so well and when they got to the Braves with Liam's own it only made that craft better for them but those are the things that Greg Maddux I remember he never walked eyes and he'd always get you to swing at that last pitch just off the corner and have made him so successful buildable thing isn't again it's a great lesson for young pitchers well I love the fact he's got one more win then climb in and and look at ninety four ninety five he lost part of those two seasons with the labor issues you know if this guy could be three hundred seventy five wins the only thing holding back is this postseason record where he was eleven and fourteen the area was over three acres remembrance averages over will Clark laid him up when he's with the cubs in eighty nine you know people look at that and they tend to go more towards you know Gibson and Clemens and whoever shows leave you no longer Johnson those guys but he's absolutely in the argument that you know after all the reason all the reasons that we've mentioned here that is very distinctive it is way which is another thing to me and he was a spectacular and yet he totally set himself apart as well and he looked like a professor yeah like one after the game here's here's here's here's what watching this guy from afar who is you know that that's the guy that just did this so what is what is on the do those interviews is not so that's funny yeah and great character really great baseball character the great touch and if in the bag really put out a tweet this week at present if you saw it or not but the leading home run hitters against Colfax did you see this guy's did you see this drive up to see that all right I don't know I listen to this number one well seven home runs Ernie banks thank you Aaron Frank Robinson and fully follow well runs six home runs Clemente five home runs made sense to pay them now the key to the whole thing Phillipa Lue seven home runs sixty eight at bats everyone else's you know in the hundreds and ninety seven and eighty have a fully felicitous why I brought it up you know we had problems with Jackie's okay yeah yeah anniversary Wednesday and I was thinking you know baseball's never acknowledged the lack Jackie Robinson and I thought fully pay you make the argument for Clement then there's there's movement to retire his number throughout baseball but I will tell you something first spokesperson for the Latin player in baseball hat for who he is and who he still is I think fully pay should be the guy I really do yeah I I agree I mean in terms of breaking ground the way Jackie did you know he shows up in the U. S. in nineteen fifty six he doesn't know anybody can't speak the language and he's never faced racism which was rampant in those days I mean he's from the Dominican Republic nobody from his country has ever played in them in the major leagues except for Aussie Virgil but he you know he went to high school in New York isn't that will not count and in all the although it's you know guys from the early years especially from the Dominican look at fully pay it as their leader not just because he was the first but because he he acted the part he was the perfect guy you know he was he was an outspoken defender of Filipinos you know the rights in baseball when doing so many things are stacked up against him in his own people thought he was so outspoken that's why the giants traded in because he spoke out against all the dark I mean take belief is word right there anytime but he was the guy he he was he was a guy I mean in any and he he completely for me to say this would be mentioned the Colfax I was at Dodger Stadium one night around sixty five or sixty six and his plan for Milwaukee in fact this morning everybody down you know Aaron Matthews in Adcock and god knows who and hosted and fully pay a little steps to follow not not a little bit a little as he is pronounced as it steps up there I just hammers a fastball down the left field line for a double images dead polls one of these on hittable things I'm going to count all mighty who is that you know and then if that was him all that whole season in in in the mid sixties during his prime and then be plus Marty just you know the the patient said he had a manager in the minor league coach in the minor leagues in managing the minor leagues but I think he spent six years with one single a team the Montreal organization he finally gets up there the next thing you know in nineteen ninety four he's got the best team in the game that I felt so bad for him because the the strike through the worst the worst labor crisis of all because it worked out this season in the World Series you know to privately pay or maybe you know getting a roommate ring as a manager but just the dignity about him you guys know that I mean to be around him close to be around royalty well the biggest thing is you know one of the biggest things back in the day was the communication and from the Latin players not speaking much English and not understanding it you know that one thing fully paid to go over and I remember Jimmy Davenport trying to be the guy in the middle try to unite the clubhouse because that was one of the hardest things you said was trying to communicate in getting them safe from the ballpark to wherever they were staying and making sure I eat well and did things like that and Debbie said that was one of the hardest thing Latin players had to adjust to come in America absolutely and it's a terrific thing that he broke in with the giants and not the red Sox in nineteen fifty nine did red Sox were the last team to integrate with Monty Greene the giants had you know with talk about dark skinned guys they had to pay that Mazen you know Willie Kirkland and McAbee and Leon Wagner put god in sundry Rogers and he only comes Marshall and many motor and the other a little bored brothers coming I mean what a what an atmosphere for Philly pay to really prove what the kind of the kind of man that he was into lead other guys and to show what was going on that that's a part of giant's history that I think they should be most proud of not just really pay but all those guys yeah he should have more recognition so yeah this is something that we have to think about it and talk about even for you know the the Buck o'neil award whatever he he deserves he that regulation and he told me the story then nineteen fifty nine when McCarthy was brought up they needed a spot on the roster we pay was hitting three twenty whatever and of course bill Regnier Stoneham whoever was said well we're going to send you back to Phoenix and we leave the roster then he said I don't think so and he went home he left he went home to the American Republic and they had to get rid of Hank Sauer that's when Hank became a coach and that's how Felipe they came back and this is Betty ninety fifty nine is still a kid and he just said he was like twenty four years old right yeah it's unbelievable sorry then I was wrong on that because he was had stronger overly Cooper he was he was right yeah keep me and not for Hank Sauer here I know macos coming up but I'm not going down yeah that was that and then Arnold Hey no wonderful writer sport magazine wrote that great article in the right around the Alvin dark era the Latin American baseball bill of rights at three Ellie.

"It's interesting that the other thing is that we combine the offense and defense and kind of thing, and the historic ly- the fastest best path to become a most valuable player in. Either in American or national Lakers starkly has been if you lead in home runs and RBI you've got a hell of a shot at winning MVP. If your team in assuming you're team has any kind of reasonable standing. And there have been many controversial. Examples of that were the sabermetrics people who didn't exist when Hank Sauer beat out, Robin Roberts in nineteen fifty two or when Jeff Burroughs beat out whomever the year he won simply because he led the league in home runs and RBI. Now those people now do not put as much stock in particularly RBI and and so forth. It'll be interesting to see how the voting body approaches it because some of the voting body are the younger writers who are very much into the sabermetrics and we'll find a way somebody out there will find a way to downplay the contributions of j. JD Martinez you watch 'em Bob, you know. Listen to Bob Ryan. Mike Lee began the Monday sports Puertas pack is Bob. He had done what he did in Detroit with the fading team. Okay. He did it with a contender in Arizona, but would you have ever dreamt Mr Ryan. That when they got him after all of the hullaballoo after the Yankees got fifty nine home runs in Giancarlo Stanton that Martinez would be so far a superior hitter in Stanton hasn't been chopped liver either and so much more important to his baseball team that Stanton has been to know. And I gotta point something out in in once again, if I'm going to mount the the argument, if I were going to be the plane of here for him, he is doing something to this quite rare right now. And that is at the moment he leads the American League in both home runs, and he hits total hits that speaks to his overall batting. Thicky was going to be this good. Bobby. No, of course not. I thought he would be good. I thought that you know, you realize Mike in people worried some experts. I'm just telling you, you know, and I know you heard this one that he would be punished by Fenway because of his well known opposite field power, however, many home runs he hit over the last couple of years. And to to right field where Fenway of course, is an advert punishing in Whitefield where and that he would first of all, there's eighty one games elsewhere, and but the fact is that it has been a neg- no effect whatsoever.
