"Swings. There's a high drive deep, right field way back. Guerrero at the long lip's gone home run for Joe Morgan. That's pretty cool there, Hank Greenwald. And, of course, rest in peace. Joe. We lost him in the off season. It was his second home run is a giant. They had a three nothing lead, and it was all good from there to Jack Clark. Yeah, added a three run homer in the eighth of a Jack Clark it in three run homers at Dodger Stadium. Giants win 6 to 1 and those of us who remember Alan Ripley on the mound. I could still see him in the Orange jersey and orange sanitary. It was only his fourth start is a giant. He went the distance about that. Allen Rippy complete game at Dodger Stadium, three hits. Eight. K's Giants win 6 to 1 on April 28 1981 Hey, before we go April 28 1992 Mattie Williams. Great giant leads off the bottom of the 10th inning with a home run for a walk off win over the Montreal Expos. Kids ask your parents with the Montreal Expos were 2 to 1 win 8100 and 44 it Candlestick sounds like a 2021 Oracle pork crowd right. Kelly Downs got a tough no decision going nine innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, but Jeff Brantley, who we just had on the Murphy Mac show, recently pitched the 10th to earn the win. Mark Gardner started for Montreal before he became a giant. And he went six and two thirds good names on April 28 1992, and this has been Brian Murphy with this date in Giants history, Lacking energy, low libido, stubborn belly fat that you can't get rid.

"Of it and we go through the first half and as we gotta start ready to get ready for the second half I said well, we're. I mentioned his name, but I said, well, we're ready to get the second half underway and I see the temperature is minus twelve wind chill factor of minus thirty two. Now, it's a throwaway line. I hear him turn on his MIC. He says, you know Ronnie. He says at minus twelve, your vital parts freeze. The healthy going instead it minus thirty two, they fall off your voice is getting a little bit high. On the air on the air guys. I, mean you had those moments. You've had funnier moments as well. As. Soon, as you started that story Ron, if I have a minute I'll tell you one was my years of the giants San. Francisco. Giants and I worked with a fabulous answer Hank Greenwald. And we're candlestick park and of course, candlestick park in June July and August was horrendous for baseball. The wind was horrible. So we're at candlestick for night game and it's so breezy windy night and I was a young guy from the same school of thought you had ron windows after be open while Hank didn't agree with me on that. So we are half and half booth. Hank had the windows closed in front of him I had the window open in front of me and finally the fifth or sixth inning and the wind is whipping around the papers are blowing all over the place and Hank goes a new journey commercial break. He goes eight ten turnaround look to your right. So looked at my right in the next booth. And the announcer is they're perfectly coiffed sitting there in such a distinguished manner with scorebook neatly in.

"You the way I define it is this is not necessarily the best moment I don't know if it's necessarily the most significant moment it's simply when I ask you what's the moment of the year what's the first thing that pops into your head that's kind of the way I define it like what pops what stuck with you they're a bunch of things I jotted down today and a lot of people been firing back even more ideas on social media throughout the day some taking nominations and despite what you may think with us some things that happened this year that weren't great for bay area sports this year was filled with huge stories no parades about by the way let me take a brief aside to say this I think we are way too obsessed with winning it all in terms of addressing whether or not a season or a team or experience was a good one or way too obsessed with winning the whole thing it's that it's that NBA debate that is so tired and so done whose greatest player of all time well am J. has six am lebron only has three Kobe's got let that thank all my gosh it's it's kinda like like this city knows the Joe Montana might still be in the conversation with Tom Brady the rest the world doesn't because were obsessed with the rings Paul has more rings times better well it can't be that simple or else what are we doing make sure we only watched the last game anyway I want to go too far down that rabbit hole but that's why I believe that this year was still a great year and have a lot of interesting things happen it's not just joy there's also intrigue there's compelling that's part of sports there's also just experiences did you go to a game with your mom or your dad or your kids or your best friend who you haven't seen in twenty years and did something special happened that night that you'll always remember it doesn't have to be a playoff championship type game I'll never forget as a little kid there's a game that stands out maybe above many many others I don't remember I was too young to remember any of the circumstances surrounding it what month of the season wasn't what place with the giants and I have no idea I don't even remember who they were playing it was one of those games though where I took over a radio to my dad and and listened to the giants and Hank Greenwald while I was supposed to be trying to sleep browse listen the giants and they came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning down five to four and the reliever through two pages through one two candy Maldonado who had a off the top of the fence and over to tie the game and then will Clark step to the plate and put one in the upper tank ball game deuces giants win and I wanna sleep I have no idea if that was a big game the giants might've been a last place for all I can remember I don't think they were but this was somewhere mid late eighties and I just remember it just stands out that was a big one for me but you know I jotted down some stuff raiders departed Oakland dot dot dot again clay Thompson tore his ACL Kevin Durant after the Kellys Kevin Durant laughed the bay area Bruce boat she ever quotes retired maybe but he did the part Madison Bumgarner did as well just earlier this week you signed in at a press conference in another city and we found out shortly afterward that that's the city he wanted to be at the forty Niners same game stands out there's a lot of forty Niners stuff that we could mention for shore that one to me stands out I think the whole NFL world feel like that was the game of the year to this point the ETS had a wild card game and build a stadium that is very rarely failed other sharks beat the golden knights yeah they they went all the way in fact the game six of the conference finals but what we remember probably round one March more so beating the golden knights rallying from three one down and then allowing within that game seven with just a flurry of goals what about even the Steph curry injury that happened this year the opening of jay-z's centering shortly after that Steph curry's out and the warriors are in full I don't want to say take mo that's absolutely not what what the words are trying to do but you get it there in full pause mode I guess we can call it so there's all kinds of stuff that took place this year and and there's no doubt it's a year that I will I will absolutely remember and I know there are moments I'm missing and I you can help me fill in the gap on that so it away can be are coming up next Mike Sando in about.

"It was really interesting was he talked about preparation and I think preparation is an often overlooked part of creativity and he said he learned from Hank Greenwald one of the great giants but has since at least no longer with us he learned from Hank that you you prove the papers you get all these little items you quit battled little facts but the thing that I thought was most interesting he said you know you have young broadcasters today who do that but they don't necessarily feel like they have to pick one at the right time they just kind of four speed does not get into the broadcast would creek say it said that Hank thought it was that you have the stuff at the ready and then if it's appropriate use it and you may not use it for a week and then something comes up in a ball game five five days later and then the you have the perfect little bit of trivia for that moment and that's when you use it it is about yeah it was the old John wooden of the failure to prepare is preparing to fail exactly there you go so crews got his yeah they're the best man and Hey you got to the sequel and a few Kuiper well I loved it I I'd left and if you type in and you know I did I did speak to drain it in advance of the interview I I often would talk to a couple people who knew the subject so I talked to Marty Lori I talked to Flannery and I caught the doing paper and they all have comments in the introduction each chapter is preceded by about three or four pages of biographical introduction and and so you know in addition to the group I have all sorts of people that I've interviewed like Smokey Robinson and the author Barbara Kingsolver the director Francis Pople the explorer Jane Goodall and and on and on Graham Nash and you guys like music yeah his book is called the creative spark the authors Michael Shapiro and check it out for Google Hey real quick before let's go Michael Smokey Robinson when the all time greats give us we would take away from the legend Smokey Hey Michael without upper register voice yeah well you know what Smokey was just so gracious I was offered fifteen minutes of smoking at seven fifteen on a Friday morning and I know that's not really if you guys but I usually play poker and on Thursday nights so they're like would you be willing to talk to smile again as like oh my god of course anytime day or night I would talk to smoking at the end smoking is it something that kinda showed why he still so good after fifty plus years I said you know what are you most proud of smoking he said you know what Michael this moment right now that a young guy like you still want to talk to somebody like me he's been doing this for so long and he just makes people feel good and I think that's the key he just he said he sings about love because love is timeless and he doesn't want to get political or anything he just wants to move people in and get into their hearts and I think he's really done this is the best man all right my thinking gradually is no easy feat writing a book you taste and all these different people but people should definitely check it out the creative spark by Michael Shapiro and and focus in on the crew go chapter so well done Michael thanks for coming on sure thanks so much for having me really appreciate him Michael Shapiro the creative spark his friend of creative Tony's right all right credits on in quite a list of people he's talked to Lucinda Williams Francis Ford Coppola Smokey Robinson all American singles at your guy was still think it's a survival skills as to my Grateful Dead show almost seven seven the bone shout out the Living Dead coast I drove out to Melvin seals home where I went down as to his basement studio he's out there not far from kills the park actually got a house there go I mean I can I can I put my hands on that rig can I touch the keyboard because all the keyboard everywhere from Madison Square Garden to the Warfield and on and on and Melvin he's such a generous dude such a sweetheart of a guy he's out there playing music Murphy can see Melvin he's around good stuff man how right Hey it's been awhile because the keyboard by the way he did yeah it's true yeah okay so going to get to later on call you six going to join us and we still have sounds too from the drew Brees big night last night and I was your creative support by the way generally speaking has it is it it's in need of a trip to Hawaii it is starting to fizzle out yeah late December the creators markets a little we like Nick Bosa we've had our snap counts been high in twenty nineteen yeah I haven't done to the Texas listen the nine one seven you know we get so many of these you suck I hate you I wish your I wish you nothing but ill and all that nine one seven murders are It's three to later on tonight. Royals and the Astros that's in Houston and the dodgers host the Braves from dodgers stadium. As far as the lineup is concerned for the giants. Derek Colin goes to the mound. He is back off the injured list. He's one in four with a five thirty four year. He'll take on John gray the right hander for the Rockies three and three with a four twenty to the lineup. That's going to go up against John gray. Joe panic is gonna lead off and play second base. Stephen Douglas in right field. He's batting second. Stephen votes in about third. He's catching tonight. Brandon belt is at first base. Batting fourth. Evan longoria at third base, batting fifth MAC Williamson. And again as I said he comes back into the lineup. Four RBI's last night to for four continuing the home run streak. And of course, San Diego's to know beating the giants Arizona and the dodgers of split their one and one each, but you know, vita when we're looking at the west we talked briefly about it. No, Colorado, signed our Nado for a big chunk of money. But I think that solidifies him as the leader of that team. And what what is your thoughts on Colorado? He's one of my favorite players. I liked to watch man. You know, you sometime you pull for teens, but I usually will pick a team and pick that gown that I used to be Louis scale who's now with the Yanks he made thirteen but he is deleted own enough to feel. He is the face of the franchise knows which teams are stepping up to do that with their with their star players, and I don't blame him. And he seems like one of those guys that's willing to to carry the torch and beat at guide the face of the franchise for the franchise. And I think he is that leader, you know, I think the team looks up to him, you know, they gave him a nice big chunk of money over two hundred seventy million dollars. And it shows them that you have to be our leader you have to be that guy. Absolutely. And I think he enjoys it. But he doesn't talk. He's just does his of on the field goal is fantastic. Third baseman you. And I love him. I think he would hit regardless if he was in Colorado not. Yeah. I do too. And of course, a loss Paul Goldschmidt, another one of our favorites. And what does he do yesterday? He hits three home runs home run. And I think with Saint Louis I think that is a perfect fit for him with the Saint Louis fan base as grand as join. Extended his contract over one hundred million dollars. And I think that's what's happening when we're looking at some of these faces on some of these teams where they're getting extensions now instead of trying to hit the free agent market the great game of baseball at its best. It is and we look at Harper Machado. And I think some of these guys are saying, hey, you know, why do I wanna sit out three four months wondering where I'm going to go. And they love it where they are. And they've taken some great extensions. So all right. We got a couple of four lines here. Vital lighten up. Let's go to Regina, Regina. You're on Cambio vita and Bill. How are you? Hi, I'm good. Good. Good. Good to you. You're basically should I love you guys from the old days? How you doing good? Snake ac-, it's spring training again this year high Bill, our you. Good and vitamin it's blue blazer. Anyway, you guys are outstanding. I remember you very well. And but you he stuck in nerve. And I just wanted men with my memory with you. Do you these great guys that we lost recently? The biggest thing Regina is people that we watch people that we adored, you know, in the latter part of their lives, and and we're seeing these gentlemen pass away in the honors that we can bring to them and reliving. Some of the memories are are what we're what? And those are the things we have to live onto Regina tell us a little bit. What you remember about Willie McCovey? Well, it's my favorite going up native and. I remember just. Those long arms and his his stretch. And I remember the first time I saw him up close was it spring training. He was looking to the lobby at remember this special plaza resort. It used to be the Sheraton the giants which stat north Scottsdale. Yeah. I remember him walk in a while. You know, so six four those long arms all the better to stretch with and scoop up the. Throws. But two way he was such a little smile. He was so sweet. And I don't know. And and the way he hit the ball may God it would just was like a walking. We talked to Joey earlier about the sound of the ball. When it hit the back. There was something different. When you look at hall of famers or your top line hitters, the crack of the bat the sound of it. You know, he he hit that ball solid and Willie did that so much. Oh my gosh. I don't know if anybody hit it harder. And I have great memories is. Manager Frank also in his his shoes definitely hardcore like vitamin mentioned that he got eleven that old school style. Thank really well. And I love listening to his storytelling. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him on the plane down a spring training once and have met him various times it. Peres etcetera. But what a storyteller and his I would wait on him Carla and Kelly had the stadium club sometimes as well. And they were always very sweet and down to earth, and I have Hanks book, and I went to see him at the center of San Rafael Pacifics game over in marine, maestro Perry. Sponsored it they had a bobblehead for him. And that's the last time. I saw him alive. Was the last few years? He was he was following Doug around. I saw him up in Sacramento dot came into the face a river cats and brought the whole family up. They went out to dinner and just some great stories. Of course, Hank was around invite in I played and his voice was always so calming. It didn't matter if you were having a good day or a bad day. He made it sound as you are giving your best effort. And that's what you know. A good announcers did any he'd never ripped on anybody never through anybody under the bus and hankering while was the face of the franchise when you talked about the media back then. Yeah. He's he's a classic broadcaster. And I'm glad cooking type got to learn from him. And I hope that can somehow stay in the organization somewhere down the road. Where regina. Thank you so much for calling today. We appreciate it. You're our first caller for our seas. And all that is Regina. You guys. You guys are Gina. Let's go to Berkeley. And let's talk to Carl Carl. How are you? And what's your memory about Willie McCovey? Oh, man. It goes back to childhood. But first, let me say man you and by the blue are beautiful thing that people don't realize what you guys went through. It'd be a pitcher. Natural gifts. The magic the magic to read those batters throw your different pitches that you thought would work well read about as well execute on the pitches. Another chair that one. Both the beautiful thing, man. Well, Caro, you know, your your memories serve us. Well, but Willie McCovey had been in your eyes when you were growing up and did you grow up in northern California? Yeah. I did Bill. My father worked at a music store on second in Howard street, and it came up in the old chain elevator Willie Mays McCovey to buy some wholesale musical instruments. And that was the first experience to meet the two ballplayers got their autographs, and I lost him. Yeah. You're growing up your kid. You don't know you might have been playing in the backyard with him and didn't even know there were signed. You know, what they were big fans of when when the warriors would play over in in in Oakland. I went to see him play some exhibition game against a team. I guess it was just called the eagles. You know, like the Harlem, Globetrotters or something? They were big fans of basketball to McCovey anthem age. Wow. I didn't know that. Let me ask you Carl do you? Remember, the voice of Hank Greenwald. Yeah. I was listening to your show. I do remember that voice voice. It's not it's not as nice as yours. Well, you know, the memories I were bringing on some of these guys as well as Peter McGowan. We we really haven't touched on Peter much and Peter was the one that really was the instruments to keep the giants here in the bay area. You remember those type of days and all the pressure that you're hearing about Tampa Bay. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I'm going to the game next week next Saturday get rained out. You know, McCovey was on the Roberts market. What side shopping? No problem. Get this stuff. The items off the top of the shelf. And I saw that you who I think you already said. Yeah. That's the giants. Always a fan. I said, you know, I go up to the check stand. Get a pen. You know, we signed my habit. She's glad to always gentleman always gentle. My hat's off to you. We appreciate your call Carl. Thanks for all the memories. And thanks for support invited night. We appreciate it. Bill. You guys are always there brother into stats and stuff that you guys bring frost the radio to the people in their homes and educate us, all the all the facts are great. We appreciate it. Have a good day Carl. We'll see out the ballpark vita. Okay. Take you the stat, man. That's why call you. Everybody can find stats value. This gotta keep Delvin in there. And just wanna know did we win or lose the game? I don't care about stat. I came. If I know that the game has changed, and we talk about this. We got a few more minutes before our next guest. Joe Morgan comes on. But the analytics today, I understand it. And I understand all the information information highways getting more and more and more. But but I go back to one thing. And and I know you're gonna jump right in the heart of the lion harder. The lion. Is that player going out? There busted under tail day. And I just feel with all the analytic. Sometimes you're going to go. I only have to go three innings day two innings today. I don't like that either. That's what my question to. You is all the analytics can tell you everything. But when you're not playing every day. Heart listed as so that's that's what I'm. And you and I will talk about that. Until the last day, we take that last breath air because baseball is changing and the old school type of game. I it's not there anymore, and I just loved on Madison. Bumgarner said in the beginning of spring. He said I'm here to pitch nine innings. I don't want anybody to help me, and that's the old school in Madison Bumgarner, and I love that about it. And that's the key there. So listen, we're gonna continue to honor our four gentlemen, four gentlemen. We lost over the winner Willie McCovey hand Greenwald. Frank Robinson and Peter McGowan as we continue here on the sports leader vitamin Bill. We brought back. You're listening to on the hill with vita blue and Bill Laskey sponsored by Lunardi as markets with eight locations to serve.

"Didn't mind I just felt like. You know, I was learning so much. Well, John understood how much Joe new and John's set them up and that that's the beauty. See the the first guy has got to set up the analyst. And well now that I'm thinking about it. You know, there's so many on TV today. Rick Sutcliffe never stops talking. And now we got me on Rick Sutcliffe, my annual rant about him. Never stops talking ever as much as I like buck Martinez. Never stops talking. Ron darling never stops talking. And the problem. See this is the problem in the now, I'm thinking about this stuff. Thawing out here after the winter. But my whole thing about this broadcast thing let the game play. You don't have to talk and analyze every pitch. It's different than football football. You know, you have a play third and sixth third seven is what they're going to do and his formation, blah, blah, blah. You know, you're talking about constantly baseball. You can let it sit a little bit. And let the let the play by play guy set it for you give you the scene you do not have to analyze every pitch. So you bring up Koubek and Joe Morgan they understood that I think they they they they knew the left baseball play. I wanted to ask you on a related related, but a different topic about players into Tinkler for this season. One of them may not even last season. Those two players just what do you think they're gonna do? Twenty nineteen one is Madison Bumgarner Tyler Beatty. Good question. Lot marty. Okay. We'll take my on the okay? No problem. Thank you Tyler beat. He's been terrific. He he could force the action here on Chris Stratton. Absolutely tied block. He he can force the action on these guys. He's a starter. And I don't think there's going to be enough innings for him coming out of spring training. But it's not impossible to see Andrew Suarez and beady and Sean Anderson in the rotation Sacramento with a bunch of these infielders Sacramento is going to have one heck of a team. So Beatty has been fabulous and camp ninety seven breaking ball, looking his I. He's he looks like a different pitcher. He and I think he knows it. He's the right age. I think he's grown up a lot so Beatty. Absolutely someone. I can't wait every time. He pitches now watch him really that's how good he's been his life. First couple of times out. Bumgarner is is the pitcher. He is you know, he's he's the sheriff. He's the Marshall is the enforcer. He's he's the the lead pony, whatever you wanna call. And that's who he is. And he's got two thousand innings on his arm already. He's got to keep the ball down. He's really got a pitch. And I think he's capable of having a good year. I don't think he's ever going to be the guy that he once was and my personal feeling is that he will be traded and depends on what happens in as I say from March twenty eighth to July thirty first, but knowing what far Han ANZAC Minassian and j p Ricciardi what they're trying to do. Here is is regroup this team piece by piece Bumgarner can get you at that auction on July thirty first if he has a good first-half, which we hope he does. I hope the guy is ten in one in the first half obese. Just lights out. And if he does that they can auction them off as everyone does and that July thirty first that big pitcher and maybe get three players back for him. And I think that's the fate of where Madison Bumgarner is going. I don't think he's going to be resigned. And I think for him it's for the benefit of his career. It's probably time for him to move on and have his last few years on a team that has a shot to be dominating team. Whether it's Houston affiliate or whatever the team that's being put together here for the next couple of years. So that's how I feel about that. Sam spear has sent me another one, let's see what SAM's gonna say here. First of all Christmas has been Scully Lon Simmons Hank Greenwald and Bill king, and it's tough to leave. John Miller off agree with you on that. Sam has got a New York at one time. It was Mel Allen red barber Russ Hodges, Kurt gowdy, and Ernie Harwell absolutely Hodges came west with the giants Gaddi went to Boston Herald went to Detroit. The first grade TV team dizzy dean, and buddy Blattner then pee wee Reese, followed by Joe Garagiola. Good history. Sam of broadcasting and sue the sidekicks were as well. During some of those times, those guys I said, those sidekicks understood just let the game happen. Let's go to Craig and Santa Rosa, eight hundred Cambior go ahead. Craig you're on the show. Thanks for taking my call mardi. Enjoy your work. I I could debate well in the bathing. Phases. Two three and four on Lon. Simmons was voice of baseball in my youth. It was by transistor radio voice. He was my maze. Mccovey and mirror. Shell boys. You know, you touched upon. Guys when we only had one game a week doors, yo and Koubek. We're good. But. A little bit different than calling appear game, which I know Mel Allen doing this week in baseball that was really formative for me. But I I don't think you can lay Ben Scully up any other whoever's the fourth one is highly debatable, and John Miller is right up there about Simmons was just a voice of baseball. Why I am a lifelong giants fan. The fact that he did the as and the Niners that that Steve Young rumbling bumbling forty yard dash through the Viking that seminal. But he was.

"The two people in America that don't like MAC and cheese found each other and do a show to get you can do so much with it. Noodles and cheese. You can add whatever you want into it. Like, that's I know. My my math is shocking. Everybody loves. That I get that. But I don't know how you could find two people sitting right next to each of the don't like MAC and cheese. Could you ever do that? I mean, could you how hard is that to do to find two people that don't like MAC and cheese? Man. That's that's pretty he shouldn't have gone there. What? What your disappointment? Bear. I thought it was gonna come back with MAC and cheese. That's the cheapest Landis velveeta crap. I don't want that wouldn't eat that. I encourage my kids to not eat it. Tommy. No, it's very popular. Brian my worst. That's the worst of it. That's nothing. I was hoping Tom would do something. Like, I thought he was not knowing have already a Vardi. That's another. I even got a little tweet for my guys. Jeez. I didn't know these guys live such a high lifestyle. You know that they're sampling cheese. Yeah. But like you're bragging about anyway. Tom, which is playing there. I thought Tom was going to go there. You don't like my beer segment you're talking about cheese. Anyway, let's go to Jim gray who this is kind of funny. We're going to get off of cheese to go. Sure, you ready to make that transition child and John Rivera nice about it. That was fun. I. In the way, you segue from Anna from cheese to gray was seamless which. Excellent job, my friend. He is. I mean, I I have my Jim gray ingratiating himself story that I'll share on the seven. Larry's you've never had homemade MAC and cheese. Yes. I don't know. What the hell that means? Yeah. But stop by make me some. Yeah. Okay. I I don't like MAC and cheese. I mean, it's it's the which lowest grated cheese. Heck, the the the one that might make for my kid. It's even cheese cheese powder. Gross. Okay. Realize you don't like it every there's nothing we can do. I'm not going on a pilgrimage saying, it's kind of I don't want, you know, teach their own I with never floats your boat, James gray was mad. Jim is mad because Oprah you've probably never seen on the Oprah channel super soul Sunday. I don't think my cable system has the Oprah channel. Well, get it. Anyway, for sunny were Oprah just has a friend on she had Brady on she's interviewing Tom Brady. But they take a group shot and the group shot that is being distributed is Oprah. Tom Brady, right. It's wife Giselle, and Jim gray is right in there. So Jim gray. Does do the weekly CVS weekly hit with Brady? Yeah. Right at halftime. And a game or something or pre game is in there, Monday night football. But the point being so to radio host in Boston. We're kind of like Oprah Giselle Tom Brady, and then what Jim gray doing in there. So Jim gray went on at Super Bowl week. He was making his way up and down the aisles it was too short to churn rich. One of the top there in ninety eight five the sports hub there and Beantown. All right. And so there, anyway, here's just a piece of it. And how the interview ends kinda funny. Very secretive. Oh. Oh. I don't know what what your time. We'll get to the point. Yeah. You don't wanna be here? What are the questions when you when you just won't answer any questions? It's boring. I mean you being defensive and looking at we're a stupid question real quick. Okay. What are you doing having dinner with somebody? No, we didn't know you were having dinner. I just told you he didn't like the answer. Jesus. Jim just go do whatever you have to do by. Here's the headline luck to you. And that's the end to this is awesome gray was insulted that like they were they didn't over make fun. But it's like, geez. What are you doing with Oprah? You know, basically why you hanging with Oprah. And and Jim gray got annoyed. Well, but they were interested because a Brady. Brady wipes bought they've got nine reporters. Yeah. But, but I guess the idea is great like I like awkward radio stuff where people get married and say goodbye, of course. But those those guys are big time. They just ran off Jim gray there. Well. Jim. I'm sorry. You know, like like you're interviewing God, exactly. No, no. That was real good nervous. You're she SIA. Get outta look at the video. You'll like it. I mean, it was really really good. Just make my quick those guys on the iheart. Sometimes. Yeah, they're good. But just a quick Jim gray. This is years ago when it's getting started in San Diego. Remember giants went down there and clinch there have been so abrasion began. Yeah. Steve physiology with the final call caveman served up the fly ball to the hack man in the corner. He said they'll pop up and it went to the fencing member it, right, right? And the giants could not use that on their highlights of these eighty seven right? Well, first of all they shouldn't have had him in there to begin with. It should have been Gary park is like the giants. Suddenly just moved Gary park away at the hour. Imagine if you had one announcer all year it's crew can crew crew. Pipe, and then all sudden, you're going to clinch, and here's here's a, you know, a new high Hank Greenwald's kid or something or just somebody who's not. Yeah. Somebody's never been on all year. He went onto the angels. Cleanses city. Now, I think he's still working they introduce Steve physique, right then. And there like as they were clinching. Oh, no. I if he you know, he would look at me all the time we joke about, but he goes. Wow. You get away with a lot as well. You know, it's just this style of doing it fits because phys. You put up here read this. Well, my wife, I don't love her that much. It was on the prompt. Or I'll say, you know, what I mean. He just somebody robotic is just but anyway in the San Diego press box, Jim gray idols, and he goes I hear there's a sports opening your are you Gary. Yeah. Yeah. It's a sports opening near the last guy signed for only thirteen weeks. I like to send you a tape. Well, Jim until the bodies buried it was Tom nettles. Right. I said you can't you know. I I don't think they're accepted. He tapes you like to give you one anyway. So that was it. And then Dennis O'Donnell was there, and we both kind of blue Jim gray off. So little did. I know that he was going to be with Oprah. I love whose agent is because he between him and the guy rose those guys get out of nowhere. I don't want to say they're non talents. But they are in there like omnipresent mean that guy rose gets the best gigs of all time. He's on the MLB network doing the. Nice talk. And then he's on the NFL network at the combine. And I you know, if you really said does the guy know a ton about baseball does he know a ton about football. But you know, what he's there. He's kind of pleasant as you said he's kind of optimistic and he's must have a great. We won't mention any names. But there's a guy worked at ESPN telling Larry the story the other day is that nowadays with people ready to sue. And there's all types of things going on politically correct world they hired a guy on ESPN. He was good. But also that he was safe was not going to get him in trouble with not going to say the wrong thing. And he got a big high paying job, you know, whether it's two guys, actually. And who are they want to name them? I'll say one guys early in the morning real early and one guy is late at night s VP. I'm just you guys early in the morning, you can't confirm neither an ordinary because I'm taking the word of somebody who worked at ESPN. It was a real nice. And that the. You've asked VP pizza. Okay. Well, and s VP is your no less VP. No, I'm not as fee. I couldn't do. You couldn't read that's dominant dominate over. The nineteen th row. I I had to host issue when I'm when I got my SPN stuff, not as fi. Yeah. All right. Larry do I have to bring bad not saying? But they when they brought me back there Overman left the first time. So I go back. I've told you this and that and they're the guys walking around and picks me up at four seasons in fifty fifty seven drives me through Greenwich and says here's where you could live. They don't wanna show you Bristol to the last minute. Then there's Bob Lee and Charley Steiner both in chairs coming out of the chairs. You're what I'm saying? And they look down. He goes that could be you. And I said jeez. Yeah. They're both terrific. I know that. And I, you know, I mean, I I just couldn't I just wouldn't the regiment. I couldn't take your no ad van Virk. What? Yeah. You hear about him? Yeah. Actually, I did. Actually, he got tell that story. I mean, you he story. I don't know the story other than he got let go for for talking to the media at advance or add Adron, Adnan. Okay. As last names Virk. Anyway. He was terminated by Pnn for allegedly leaking confidential information to the website, awful announcing dot com about the network dumping baseball tonight or something like that. And they felt it showed them in a bad light. They felt like it came from Virk. And now Virk and his lawyers and ESPN and their lawyers are trying to negotiate some kind of some kind of some kind of the story. Oh, yes. Let me just finish Burke real quick that very Virk it. So so what they did with him is they tell we're not gonna have baseball tonight. All right. I guess he was going to be one of the hosts or something. And then a couple of hours later it shows up according to ESPN word for word on awful announcing dot com. Exactly. And it, and it's a sure Virk is probably not happy that he was you know, that they were getting rid of the baseball tonight. So baseball tonight on ESPN by the way on Monday through Saturday. So they only have it on Sunday. I mean, you know, that speaks pretty loudly about how ESPN views baseball and the whole grand scheme of things. Yeah. Now, that's not good. Talk. What.

"It's gonna be a super fun year. Listen, I walked into the park, the first person, I thought it was Peter McGowan, and you guys your group built this Peter was obviously the major visionary from New York who links the remember that remember fifty one is up there because a of of Peter, and I know you're very sad is your your dear friend, and and you guys. Our city icons concert. What you two did together and built this. But between him and Willie McCovey not to mention Frank Robinson and Hank Greenwald dirty Al Gallagher, but I would imagine is there some way we're going to honor Peter and Willie Mack this year. Yes. So so a couple of things first of all and importantly every giant in uniform will have Willie McCovey and Peter mcgowan's. Marks on their sleeves. So they'll be asleep. Patch for Willie MAC and for Peter. Dear. Dear. Thank you. Dear. Dear members of our family. And you know, I'm Peter which is most recent and fresh in the service which just last Monday. You know, Peter was Peter cared about the fans in. That's just coming at you. If you come at it that way. And that's what we all try to do then everything will be okay. Because the fans want great players fans. Want winning teams fans what good service a clean ballpark a great place to watch a game? And that's that's that's kind of what what Peter was all about. And he tweeted everybody in the front office as as as friends, not the boss, but as friends he then treated everybody the players he'd go in and just talk to players as you know. How's your house your wife? How's your children, and that that goes a long way? So. You know, we're going to we're going to really miss Peter were also going to think great thoughts about a life. Well, lived and his family, his daughters and Dahbi and Matthew and Kristen. Kim Hillary Margot we're thinking about them, really. Well, said Larry, I know you gotta go your players are coming on in just real quick. 'cause we're in the speed round will the universal D H B in the National League in two thousand nineteen. Yes. Or no. Will the? Well, the giants management ownership remain opposed to it. We'll see I mean, I I that's my natural inclination. But we'll see what happens as we go through baseball. I mean, one issue in the in the in the sport, as you know, is every youth league now has the D H. So it's kinda hard to be by two thousand. We've we've always liked the game better without with without the D H. Let's see all we know is we'll go year by year two thousand nineteen no D H. And in the meantime, I'm fearful for what's going to happen in two years. I know we gotta go on getting yelled we had to go. But I can we work this thing out between owners and players because it's it's it's. Look, I this is a situation where every year every collected by agreement. They're going to be adjustments. So are Justice last time they're going to be adjustments. I believe there's an ability to get some early discussions going. I know that's the we had owners being this this week. And I mean, I think that's where where the our side the ownership side wants to do. So let's get the conversations going early. We have a couple of years to to get to a deal. So section one thousand nine for the friend zone SF jazz dot com. Don't let Yankee fans get in here. Please take us twenty percents off. No, Bryce, just yet. But still Larry Baer everybody give it up for the giants. Thanks lot out. You guys in the best fans in baseball three billion every year, anybody here's the best fan in baseball too. I don't care. What's a little Ray? Right. Here comes Joe panic. Brandon Crawford and Chris Shaw. Stick around six eighty the sports leader NBR's six eighty eight John Lund here. I'm just like you. I want more energy more strength more drive. That's why I take 'em drive every day. It's made by a family run business. The father Garry is a world class. Scientists who made this everyday supplement em drive to keep himself feeling like he did in his twenties and thirties to stay active to keep hiking to keep biking. He's refusing to let his age beat him. And I'm doing the same energy strength drive..

"There by by day. Frank robinson. You did not hear passed away yesterday. Murph our trading text yesterday talking about again, probably the most underrated player ever immerses Howard Bryant attacks him and says that. Hank? Aaron probably the most underrated which I it's a fine argument. That's okay. That's fine. But I think Frank Robinson a guy who retired. And Dave Dave look this up this morning ten thousand at bats. And he's the last guy to reach the ten thousand at bat plateau. Dave, yes, sir. There's a couple of inter close eight euro, I think jurors about eighty like you said ninety at bats away or bats. Come back. Pass. They're for Dave total, great, great knowledge or great memory there from last season. Probably right about this time right after we started doing the leadoff spot Rafael Palmeiro announced that he was working on a comeback. Right. How about that working on a comeback Rafael Palmeiro trying to get back into the hall of fame? But Frank Robinson does pass away a two thousand four career batting average twenty nine hundred hits. He might have tried to play one more season get that three thousand hit. But decided he was going to retire to become the first African American manager major league baseball history just a list of his credentials real quick fourteen time all star two time World Series champion and sixty six ended seventy he was in that World Series. Dave you and I were talking about it this morning, actually, sort of sort of a funny story. My dad yesterday bless bless, his heart. My dad not the sports fan. Not the baseball fan. I've told this story I actually last week. I think Dave I told the story about Burt camping areas that was at this. This Bobby bonds memorial golf tournament. Back to back years. My dad was hosting. This is like backyard barbecue type thing the night before the golf tournament. So it's all these former ballplayers told we'll we'll Clark I thought he was going to the hall of fame, and he laughed in my face. And he's he's not gonna go. But we'll Clark that that was funny that a kid who really hadn't seen a plane as prime was telling him he thought he'd be hall of favor told Bergkamp air Sam in the pine tar game. He said what pine tar game? And then the coolest moment. And I think I told you this what's Dave was I got to spend some time talking to Brooks Robinson and Brooks Robinson. Degrade third baseman signing baseballs, and I noticed he's signing balls left handed. I said what I thought you were right handy. Play third base better. And he said, well, I I've been left handed in everything my entire life except for playing baseball. I always felt like writing left meant that was my dominant hand, and it made it easier to snag balls with the with the glove on my left hand is a right handed fielder would feel balls left handed or with your with your hand being your your dominant hand is what he was saying the funny part about this is yesterday. My dad says to me text sends me a text, man. French route Frank Robinson passed away. Super sad, man. I heard and he said you still got any balls from him that were signed. And I went I I talk I've never met Frank, rob. I remember that. I would know that for sure. And he goes to all those all those golf tournament things. And I went off at all, dude. No, man. That's that's Brooks Robinson. And then he he gets the the any any any young African American kid knows when your dad turns it on. He turned it on. I mean, no, I know negro who who Frank Robinson is. Yeah, he dropped it on me. Dave he went. He went dad on me. And I said, no dad, you're you're mistaken, and then I had to show him evidence that there was no Ray Frank Robinson was at one of those things because he was a managing the Washington nationals at the time. And then my dad backed off. But we remember Frank Robinson today. We're told to the all star appearances gold glove award and fifty eight dude won the triple crown in nineteen sixty six won a World Series MVP that same beard, sixty six PM both leaks. How about that and MVP and both the National League. And the American League he's got his number retired by three different franchises the Cincinnati Reds. Baltimore orioles. And the Cleveland Indians. He's he's Dave. You gave me the note. He's one of two guys to have his number retired in baseball in three cities. Yes, sir. Neither one was a uh. A former teammate of his would be Nolan Ryan former teammate of his and also he was immortalized in the great movie bull Durham time. It seems like a bad trade part of baseball who can forget Frank Robinson Pappas for God's sake. Nicely done. Dave who could forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, especially when Susan sarandon's reminding you early in the early in the did, you know, Dave. A a Catholic rosary has the same. Number of beads as stitches on a baseball would be one hundred and forty four a one forty four nicely done a manager of the year in one thousand nine hundred ninety manage the giants here for for three or four seasons. And then again, it's number retired in three cities in the reds hall of fame. The Orioles hall of fame, the Indians hall of fame, and who would have known that the Washington nationals had a ring of honor. He's in that too. And he's also in the McClements high school hall of fame over here in Oakland as their greatest athlete a local guy. So we pay and we remember Frank Robinson today a tough off season since the since the year ended for the giants. I mean, even even going back to last year losing Hank Greenwald, and then and then Willie McCovey, and then you get Peter McGowan. And now, I mean Frank Robinson. I wouldn't. But a part of the giants family go manage the teamdwayne Kuyper. Of course, talks about them all the time. Great story that kyp- is told I think a number of times, I really cool to get to see him manage for as long as he did Frank Robinson. Because he he managed the Expos from the time. They were the Expos. Up to when they became the nationals. And if you recall those last we'll see the last two seasons that the Expos were in existence. They played a portion of their games in San Juan Puerto Rico. Remember that they weren't selling out games in Montreal. So they played I only remember this day because AJ Brzezinski hit a big grand slam down in got in San Juan Puerto Rico. And then also there was a a random rain out at one point where the giants weren't going to go back to San wants to the last time the Expos came to San Francisco they played a one ticket doubleheader because the game was scheduled to be played in Puerto Rico. They put a one ticket doubleheader like a Saturday day-night doubleheader might have been a Twi night doubleheader against the Expos and giants ran Brett Tomko and Wayne Franklin out there. Anyway, you have Frank Robinson. Who was the manager of the of the Expos or the nationals at the time early on when the nationals were bad. And and Cape was telling a story about how I Robinson. If he told you to do something if he gave you a sign and anybody who plays baseball knows? Cardinal sin missing assign. You do not want to miss aside. You business. Most baseball managers or coaches can deal with the physical air. It's a mental air that is no excuse, right. That's what you work on being mentally tough in the game of baseball. He told the story about how Frank Robinson set him up to pinch hit or not pinch hit set him up to sack, but he said you'd better get that sack down. He gets up there and the pitcher decides he's going to pitch out because they're afraid the guy might take off from first base doesn't matter. If he's intentionally walking he's pitching out, you'd better get the bunt down guy goes to pitch out in type just throws his bad up. And and tries to get the bud down makes contact with the ball. Ball goes down gets the button-down down sacrifice gets back to the dugout. Fred Robson wouldn't even look at him. Didn't even make eye contact. He got up there and through his bat up to get a sack and Frank Robinson wouldn't even looked at him. All right. I'm glad we have this digression Dave nicely done there on the rejoin finding us some Frank Robinson sound and to come full circle. He played in that World Series. With Brooks Robinson that great play that Robinson makes backhanding up to third baseline incredible play. All right. We got our. Baseball fixing tomorrow ten AM fan fest oracle park. Broadcast will begin at nine AM on the main stage. I'll be with Marty from nine to eleven we'll have a series of players. And if you can't make it out if you're not going to be able to be there and you want to keep tabs on on what some of the players have got to say, we'll have far Zaidi's going to sit down with us talk about. Maybe we'll ask him a meeting with Bryce go. See a Gatorade guide was his hair. Looking good. Did we fit him for some orange and black? We'll talk to him about that. But if you can't make it out Camby are dot com and SF giants dot com. We'll have a live video stream. "Hundred rolls on. Here's your host. Ryan kobe. Snowflake tweeting. All right. Mike crew was on the morning show. We'll get to that in just a moment. Ricky and Belmont. Those got a quick story for his Ricky on kmby are far away. Rickie? It's your time to shine. How's it going? So you're talking about smoking with celebrities, and I just couldn't believe that. 'cause I smoked by Jews celebrities, whatever in my life in one of them. Limbs back in the nineties this up. Just incredible. I mean, I listen to you when I drive home and tons of stuff that I feel like holy crap. I can't believe you just said that exchange that so great. It's a great, listen, you know, the drive home to and I just thought it was hilarious that. Well, we have a connection with. Eastbound artists that we've smoked with. That's awesome. Hey, where so you're coming home from work right now. Yeah. Just got home. Yep. What's that? What do you work? I'm. Working at a hospital. Late shift. You know? Well, hey, I gotta tell you Ricky like, you're exactly who we want this show to be four man people working late night grinding just trying to, you know, get by make that money. Make that ends meet and hopefully, we can entertain you a little bit, man. So that's dope. I appreciate you checking in hey, man, we got high with ECOWAS that's pretty sweet. Anyway, one last thing did you catch on the news about a week or so ago where somebody found? Your of the Menendez brothers back and killed their parents. Yeah. So. Apparently between the time that they got their insurance money and the police talk to him about a six months spending spree. They went out spend all kinds of cash. Yeah. Right. So somebody found a Mark Jackson basketball court. I don't know what top two what brand with to Menendez brothers front row at a Knicks game. Oh, man. Mark Jackson basketball court. On ninety three or whatever you want. We'll investigate. All right. That's crazy, man. All right. Good stuff. Ricky check at any time. Brought to have a great night. Okay. Oh, dude. Mark jackson. Well, let's look that up. That's crazy, man. I know Jags where he spent whenever people get into storytime on the late night hand on the dump button. Dude, you like, I don't know where this is going then we're talking about people that killed their parents. But he was okay. When he mentioned the Menendez brothers man anyway, right to the Dave. And you know, we've worked together long enough to know the look, right. It really seems like when we look awesome. Take off wearing. I mean that was that was the only way you could talk. Menendez brothers and make a funny story out of it. And that is priceless. I could just see sitting courtside. So here we go. I just googled it. Menendez brothers. There is a card. Menendez brothers. Oh my God. They're they are prowling Eric sitting courtside on a Mark Jackson basketball card at a Knicks game. Dude sitting courtside, dude. It's it. That's it. Those are the Menendez brothers. Gotta shout out Ricky in Belmont. Thanks, brother. Nice job rookie. I'm looking at it right now. It is a Mark Jackson. Let's see it says NBA. Oops. Let's see who makes this is just like an NBA card sin official NBA basketball cards. So the property of the NBA tops or anything. But yeah is in an eighty nine ninety basketball card. Mark jackson. There you go, dude. That's pretty crazy. All right. Yeah. Yeah. Hopefully, hopefully, those guys are enjoying prison. Nice job, murdering your parents, dude. All right earlier today. Mike Ruko now is yesterday because you know, I'm on at one in the morning early here yesterday. Murph and MAC, they spoke with my crew co as they do a couple times a week here on the sports leader and Mike was talking about Peter McGowan. So we're just going to pick it up kinda mid interview. While they said, you know, good morning group and everything and then we'll just take it away. Go ahead might it's a really tough time for all of us. And I'm not talking about just all of us in the giants organization because Peter affected everybody in the area. Everybody who who love baseball. Everybody loves San Francisco. She affected us in a positive way. And so I'm processing, and I think if you knew where he was physically last year and. How difficult it was for him. I mean, you anticipated this day was coming but still. Star was so bright. You just didn't think it was ever going to stop. And now there has it. It's been impactful. I loved Peter McGowan I loved him. He was a true visionary. He was a gentleman throughout his whole life. And and what I see. Visionary. He saw he saw possibilities, and he had the intelligence and he had the drive to go get them done. I mean, remember talking with Larry Baer this morning. He was laughing. He says, you know, they couldn't he couldn't get together. Grouped by the team. There was a negative surrounding him. Then that he couldn't get it done. And and yet he did. And then and then he started the painstaking process to develop political relationships to to get a positive affirmation that did the ballpark db said he was going to do it three dressed up candlestick. You couldn't make it any better. But he did he made it our place and he never apologized for and any kind of ballpark building. I mean, there were so many things along the way that he did that he brought us in. And we just kind of were an off of how he was going to do these things and he did and. And in the process, he met all of our lives better. And. And I think I be a lot of people when I say that I loved them, man. I stand proud, and I said. I think he's a guy that was so unique in so many ways so special in so many ways that you will always be remembered and positive way important because that's what he was all about. He was about the giants about about San Francisco Bay area. About the giants. Imaging New York. I mean, he bridge that gap. Think about that. It's almost as he left New York as a kid growing up rooting for the giants came west. It figured out a way to go back and bring that group of of giants fans that were left behind. He brought them back into the fold. He did so many things. And and so that I I'll be eternally grateful, and the fact that I was a part of it. And and I got to watch him, and and we got to have dinners and celebrate the days of victories, and it was just. It's a tough time process. But what a wonderful man, he really is. I was lucky enough to do the fifty yearbook thanks to him. He he and Blake roads pick me to do this fifty year book, and I picked picked it up last night and looked at it again because they did such a great job. It's gorgeous. But one of the things that one of the interviews. I did was with Hank Greenwald. And who another guy we lost? We lost a mama Covey Greenwald. Mcgowan cheese, but he said Mike this was in. Oh, seven in the book. He said there should be a statue of Peter McGowan outside of packbell park. That's how that's how impactful he was like leading ES Willie Mays. Yes, Willie McCovey. Yes. Peter mcgowan. Why s Larry Baer that question this morning? Are we gonna put a statue throw ballpark for forum? Larry surprises. He doesn't let the cat out of the beggar. But just the way he he responded. I mean, I think it's gonna get done. But you're right. He deserves it. He deserves it. Me think about. He kept the team there. When he was elected to obey hall of fame in November. I was asked to present them and the way I started the whole the whole night was I had everybody stand up sing take me out to ballgame that everybody did it was rockets, and that was fun. And then when they all sat down, I should think about this wasn't for Peter McGowan that song doesn't get some in San Francisco after nineteen ninety two. That was powerful. Is a powerful thing as much as we like our baseball as much as the history of the Pacific coast league was so rich and baseball was was loved in in the bay area. It was almost taken from us. And you know, he kept up from happening. And and. Yes. You should have a statute. I mean to me you could put it right in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge. I mean, he could be anywhere in San Francisco. I mean, that's that's how much of an impact he made a my life. And I think all of a sudden the same thing. But yeah, statu I'm in I seriously. I remember when I mean, literally, this was two thousand and again when when I heard that and I was like there, right? Because it's it's and we talked about all day yesterday. This is this is this was a life that impacted in the great city of San Francisco one hundred and seventy years of post gold rush settlement here, and you can put them on the shortlist in the last fifty years or the most because my whole neighborhood down there you live down there during the season that was in one thousand nine hundred ninety three or when they took over the team. There was no nothing. I mean old warehouses and a couple of old shops. I don't know. But nobody went down now UCSF Benny off hospital world-class hospital Joe lake upset. Hey, I like it down there. I'm gonna move my warriors. They're all those condos that you. And everybody lives in down there. My grabbing part of the city now, nobody even knew the best weather in San Francisco is on the east side, right? Exactly, it was an industrial wasteland. You wouldn't go down there. And you're gonna get fined by the league. But now, it's it's one of the most desirable places in in all of San Francisco. So the guy do so many things like that. But I mean to me I mean, it was it was he and his wife Debbie that after a game in a tough game. And in Miami. Who were you know, let's go have dinner. Well, it's midnight. Not a problem. Let's go and we go there. And then we tell stories, and you know, he was a great storyteller. And and he would always have stories about the New York Giants and how they were so comparable to the San Francisco Giants, and and he would tell stories we would tell stories it was wonderful nights. And you'll learn something this morning was so significant you said he saw Peter last weekend. And he was sharp as attack all the way to the end alerts that he was a piece in one of the things that Peter said to Larry was, you know, all of us in the ownership group. We're loved by the giants fan. You know, not every owner in special sports. Say what our guys can. And it's because they kept the giants here. They kept that history here. I I don't call them investors. I call this story because they stepped forward to to to keep this great legacy program here and. It it just the things that I'm gonna miss miss those those moments when we're at the ballpark any he always did this even towards the last time I ever saw him walk into a ballpark. He lit up like a kid like a kid. It was more than a twinkle in his eye. He just couldn't stand still. He was so happy to be in in the ballpark in his ballpark. He come into the booth with Skype, and John and David and and. It would always be a conversation. But it was always beat a little smile that. He had brought us in it. And it really when he would leave. We look each other. These days regretted one not ever and Peter. We got to see the ballpark his eyes again. And it was always that same way. It was magical. Yeah. And the name Willie Mays, of course, everybody knows Willie Mays and how important he is to the great game of baseball. But Peter McGowan made sure that there is a whole millennium. Now that walks past a gorgeous statue, what are the prettiest pieces are in the entire city. He's at our address is going to be you want to send us a letter. You're sending it to twenty four Willie Mays plaza. And there's twenty four palm trees, and that was Peter because of his New York, and plus how many times have all of us said, hey, meet me at the Mesa. Am I just real you can offer your thoughts? But here's the maze quote to John shea. Shea shade has a good thing with maize Willie told him. He and Debbie cared about me. And it was so easy to care about them. In return. It's hard to find the right words just now. But in losing, Peter..

Remembering Hank Greenwald, the gentlemen, humorist by Bruce tank ins, tracking hang Greenwald's broadcasting career is a bit like trying to identify every song ever performed by Bob Dylan. There's a new discovery around every corner Greenwald who died at eighty three on Monday covered. Syracuse football during the heyday of Ernie Davis Floyd little and Larry's uncle he was the voice of USF basketball for a spell in the nineteen seventies. He wants hosted a weekly forty Niners television show appearing one night in a helmet. So comically large it came down over his shoulders. And that was Hank. John Miller fondly recalled anything for a laugh, and then there was that visit Portland in nineteen sixty five. It was a western Hockey League trip covering the San Francisco seals against the Portland Bucker ruse and during a quick stop in Seattle Greenwald hap-. To meet a woman named Carla writer. They had a very innocent date and when Greenwald returned to Seattle three years later on a San Francisco warriors trip, they launched a relationship. He was such a gentleman Carla recalled this week, I think we went out three times before he kissed me. I said to myself my God, what's with this guy. The gentleman happen to be extremely funny and bound for glory in his profession. It was his wit. That really got me Carlo said, he always told me life with him would never be dull. And it certainly wasn't the two were engaged in nineteen seventy and Greenwald had big plans. He traveled to Australia the year before and fell in love with the country so much so that the two spent their honeymoon. They're back in San Francisco where they had a two bedroom. Two bath apartment on Nob hill for three hundred sixty five dollars a month. They arranged a return to Australia by freighter bay set sail on a sixty. Trip in June, nineteen Seventy-three with stops in Hong Kong and Malaysia. And quote, we were thinking of staying in Australia for good Carlos, Ed, but Hank founded difficult to get work, and we were both getting a little homesick. And by the time Douglas was born September nineteen seventy four we knew we'd be coming back. Doug grew up with his dad's passion for sports, especially baseball and next spring will be calling the Fresno grizzlies games in the Pacific coast league for the seventeenth year memo to major league baseball somebody get this man to the big leagues. He's that. Good life was more difficult with the greenwalds second child Kelly who was born with down syndrome. That's when Hank was at his best Carla said, he got me through the hard part with Kelly. There were times when I just wanted to throw in the towel with her. I just couldn't handle it. But Hank was right there. He told me from the day. She was born we are not giving up on this. Child to see Kelly today is to witness a person who has always been loved full of life. Enjoy as my colleague Henry showman described her this week and the family presses on without the man who joined the all time greats of the broadcasting business Dwayne Kuyper played four seasons with the giants after being traded from Cleveland and by the time of his retirement in nineteen eighty-five. He had a radio show on Ken Biard joining the giants broadcast team year later he had the good fortune of working with Greenwald. He was the perfect guy for me and Mike to learn the business Kuyper said this week, we were young energetic ballplayers coming off the field. And somehow he had to corral that energy and focus on making. Sure, we had a good broadcast. His preparation was. Unbelievable. He carried around little notebooks on each team filled with stuff he'd clip out of newspapers and scotch taped onto the page, and he felt that a true. Professional dresses that way, he wore a suit and tie every single day. Even if it was one hundred five degrees in Houston laughter invariably found its way into a Kuyper Greenwald booth. We were in Miami. And we heard these two deejays doing a spoof on the local broadcasters who constantly made mistakes and shrugged them off with the same. Catchphrase must have been the glare. I was just starting out on play by play doing a few innings before Hank took over. And I totally blew a call had the giants Willie McGee hitting a home run. When in fact, Jeffco nine caught it. So I'm trying to explain my way out of this. And I look over at hang and he's just shaking with laughter because he knows what he's gonna say must have been the glare. I'm sure the people at home wondered what was so damn funny. But Hank was laughing so hard I had to do the play by play the next inning. These are the moments that sustained Greenwald's memory and make it easier for everyone to excess. Such a great loss every night. You turn on the news. And it's a HP officer dying age twenty seven leaving behind three kids. Doug, Greenwald said or hearing about kids with cancer who don't live to age ten. This wasn't the case. My dad lived his dream doing major league baseball, even near the end listening to games on the radio. It brought him so much joy. He lived a full life.
