"A lot of money starting up this company with him. And everything went silent for a few months. And without any discipline, I went through almost all a cat and I savings and we were expecting a second child. And without discipline or still understanding of how to really succeed without the guidance and my father in this department because he was the consultant was really the networker, if you will. I have had guns in my face. I'm not afraid to meet like billionaires. So I was not afraid of this, but I didn't have the practical knowledge to make our business succeed without my father. So I started going out and trying to do film. Realized I sucked at acting and I should never try again. And that was hard lesson learned. So I got a second job while waiting on my dad at a hotel. And this hotel is the Hampton inn suites in Burbank off of Glen oaks boulevard. And I remember going there. I went there so I could get discounts at Hilton's when we traveled. I remember going there and people were always warning me of this guy in Tucson, Adams, and I watch out this guy's got the pass through he's going to try to save you. And in my head, I'm like, you can't save somebody like me. You know? My wife and I, and she was very Catholic. I used to call her Shiite Catholic shudder at the grocery like an hour every day. And I was more of like, I just hope my family goes to heaven. That was always my goal. I was like, I'm going to hell. I'm firmly planted knowing I'm going to hell. And just hoping to meet my family legacy better. It was my goal. So they tell me this about this character. And I remember thinking, I'm going to make this guy doubt who got it. My whole goal in speaking to this guy was to make him doubt who got his. So I get scheduled with him. And I remember saying to him, I was like, you're pastor correct. Is that yes, sir? And I was like, what if I told you that everyone deserves a good help? And he's like, amen, bro I was like, no, even you as a pastor, I think you deserve to go to hell. And he's like, amen. "Did you know that your taste buds change in there? No. That's why they changed the type of food that they serve. Interesting. Is that why everything's so salty? Yes. Yeah. And also why a lot of people order tomato juice supposedly? Oh. I didn't know any of this. I read an article. It's kind of like sleeping at the Hampton inn or whatever. Yeah. No buy actually, flight attendants need to take this. I was on a flight and I told people about this, but I'm telling you. The skin care woman told me to take this. So I was like doing a facial for me. And I started taking this thing. I won't live without it. The reason the FDA is trying to ban it and you can't find it on Amazon. The FDA is they want to make it prescription because this stuff is so good and you can get like two 50 for like 1999, okay? I am never tired. Never sick. The only reason I caught a little cold last week is because I forgot to take it for like 5 days. This thing makes your immune system so rock solid. I feel like I could lick a subway pole and nothing would happen to me. It's given me like dynamite. And then I was on TikTok and I saw this other guy, come on, he goes, there was a study out of Baylor university that they might have cracked like the fountain of youth is what he was saying. He goes, these two supplements over the counter taken together. Could be the fountain. Just a second one. NAC was one, and the other one was glycine. Glycine. That sounds like some Clorox shit. Yeah, so you take those together. So I'm gonna go and pick up some glycine. Glycine. Not medical advice. It's all natural. What is glycine? I don't know exactly what it is. I have to do, but it's another look at it. You should not look at what it is. Don't look at what it is, just take a bunch of it. Over the next couple of weeks. And then just see what happens. And then look to see what you were taking. It's kind of like you ever gone to a restaurant. No, they've got like some fancy looking name or whatever. And then my thing is actually turn to people like what is this? What does that mean? And they're like, oh, it's like a liver or heart or whatever. I'm going to just get the burger. Yeah. Right, exactly. But no, it's supposed to be amazing. NAC and glycine. I'm a go do research. But the NAC thing, I mean, I swear by that and I'm not like a big supplement. I take what I need. Do you think? But this is the one that.

"Then the lieutenant colonel in the National Guard does the same thing. And people on the bus are starting to freak out. They don't know what's going on. So anyway, long story short, the bus finally gets to its destination. And by the way, he's Facebook. All of this is on Facebook Live. The lieutenant colonel is Facebook Live. It just keeps getting worse. Is that how you say Facebook Live? Yeah, no, you did good. You did good. Thank you. So anyway, they get to the, this nice little hotel, and is it foul mouth or foul mouth? It's falmouth. Whatever. The admiralty inn and sweets. It's a very nice looking hotel. They have a little swimming pool in the middle and the courtyard. And I don't know, I guess they give them a free breakfast, I don't know. No, that's only at the Hampton inn. So anyway, they pull in and then the guy starts he jumps out and he starts banging on the door of the bus. And he says, you have to let me in. Let me in. And the bus break down the door. The bus driver's freaking out. And the guy said, I know you have illegal aliens on the bus. And this is all in the dark of night. Can you imagine Michael Vaughan is the driver? He is the owner of Mike's limousine, it is a bus company. They don't work trying to get a bus to go to Nashville next week. A party bus. A party bus. But I digress. So anyway, Hoffman thought that the bus was full of illegals. And he wouldn't, he wouldn't give up. So he would not leave, and mister Vaughn says he harassed us to death. This is the Cape Cod times story. Everybody was scared to death and I have to imagine show. And all of this is being recorded live on Facebook.

"Again, looking back is an empty nester at even hits me more. I love that. Troy and I had a similar experience. We went to get a 5th wheel, took the truck out, had to go cross country to get it on the way back the truck breaks down. So we're stuck Memorial Day weekend for four days, waiting for this truck. We're staying at a Hampton inn and eating at cracker barrel next door with no vehicle. And we swam. We played Scrabble. He was probably 7. And we get in the truck. I have an attitude like I'm out 2500 bucks. Plus the hotel plus four days of Memorial Day weekend and we're driving down the road and he goes, dad, this has been the best vacation ever. And I'm like, what? What are you talking about? So if it's all perspective, isn't it? He loved it. It is. And you know, we really miss that even more looking back. I had some intimations when my youngest daughter was just 12 years old. I'd forgotten something on a speaking trip and had to go to a mall to pick it up or something. And I saw a young family there. It was a mom and a dad. They had three or four kids with them. One of the kids was very small. Curled toddler. She ran up in front of her dad and jumped in front of him and stopped and said, daddy, you got to carry me. My legs are too tired. And you can tell he didn't want to, but he looked like a good dad, so he moved all of the bags to his right hand and scooped her up with his left and started walking along. And there was just something about that scene that hit me, Gary, when is the last time you carried one of your kids through the mall? Because they're little eggs were too tired. And it was the first time I realized that season was over. It's so subtle. You know what's happening every day. All of a sudden years have gone by and it's not going to happen again. And I so wish somebody had said to me that last time, Gary, this is the last time you carry one of your kids through the mall..

I'm married Louise Kelly and I'm Ari Shapiro. Babish Patel has been working in hotels since he was about eight years old. We helped clean rooms. I used to be a lifeguard at our property. We did maintenance. I did lawn care. You name it. I did a front desk all aspects of the industry. It's his family's business. So my father started out with three small properties migrated over from England and then we moved here in the box. Probably in 1976 small 25 room property by McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. And it was a family run business. Primarily, we lived on the property because such a small property had living quarters and that's basically how we grew up with. So you literally grew up in a hotel grew up in a hotel Exactly. By the time he went to college. He had a different career path in mind, but fate intervened. I wanted it to business. Financing. So my last year in college, I had a job lined up in New York City, all ready to go and my dad had a brain aneurysm. It was my mom basically saying, Hey, finish school, and then we'll see what we want to do about these properties. And then I just fell into taking care of these properties. And then we just added from there, and today he has seven hotel properties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and Illinois. Their franchises like Hampton Inn and Comfort in And so we're going to follow Babish Patel as one of our American indicators. These air people whose path through the pandemic recession will help us understand the Ark of the recovery. Since he started running hotels in the 19 eighties, but tell has seen a lot of upheaval from 9 11 to the great recession. He told me those were nothing compared to what's happened to his industry. During this pandemic. Think the pasture is the worst we've ever seen it with Cove. It must. Our properties are the running like between a 10 or 15% occupancy. So in a normal year, I know 100% occupancy is not normal. What is typical for you? So for us, we can range anywhere from 60 to about 75 80% occupancy, sometimes higher, and now you're looking at 10 to 15%. Were looking attended 15%. What does that mean for your employees? So we were able to stay open, and at that time, most of our employees said we Don't want to come to work or we're afraid to come to work. And so those that didn't want to come to work. We said. That's fine. We understand when you're ready. We're here and then some because of occupancy. We just had to further our or lay off. Having run these hotels for so many years. You must know the employees really well. Was it difficult to have to make the choice toe for lower lay people off? It really hurt me? Because you get to know these employees. They're like family to you and You know some of the kids? Yeah, it was hard. Lucky we didn't close. But we were like right there. So we just had one person running the property, and then at night, we would either shut down or Very limited service because there was no one traveling. No one coming in. Do you think this experience says anything more broadly about the American dream and a person's ability to build something lasting in this country? It depends on How you believe in your American dream, And if you really, really want to fulfill your dream, there's always ways there's always there's. There's a lot of different ways a lot of different avenues that you can pursue and you can fill those dreams. Yeah, I think To some. Maybe They might give up and say This is just It's not gonna work for me anymore, and I give up just going to go in a different direction. But I think those that came here for a dream. I think they can fulfill that dream. You just gotta be a little bit persistent. You gotta find the ways you gotta find the avenues. Got a network, but I think there's it's still a possibility to me. What I hear you saying is that despite the devastation of this last year, despite all of the hurdles on the challenges You're still confident you're still optimistic. You're still hopeful. Am I am I have a dream. I again my father started this small company. I want to expand upon the company. I don't want to see it. Go down on dime. Not gonna go back. I'm not gonna let it go down without a fight. I'm gonna put every ounce of energy. I have. Between myself. My wife is here to stand by me all the time. And so we'll do what we need to do to keep it afloat. Lavish hotel. It's been great talking with you. Thank you very much. No problem. Thank you again for having me and tomorrow we'll meet a woman who runs a manufacturing plant in Georgia, where business over the last year has actually been good. Manufacturers across the country are having trouble filling positions. A large number of manufacturers just went into overdrive. And it's not uncommon that they've gone to mandatory overtime and that they've really had to scale up. She's our next American indicator. There's new information about the helicopter crash that killed basketball star Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others. Last year the pilot violated federal air safety rules when he flew through fog and clouds. That is, according to a National Transportation Safety board investigation, which determined the pilot likely became disoriented and lost control as NPR's Russell Lewis reports, This crash highlights an ongoing problem in aviation. When the pilot of the helicopter Ariza by and took off from Santa Ana, California in January, 2020. The weather wasn't great. A low fog and marine layer was already thickening and continued to deteriorate. Is the flight progressed? Here's NTSB lead investigator Jim English. In this situation, this weather did not sneak up on the pilot very quickly. It was a condition that was very stable. The charter pilot pressed on talking to air traffic controllers and bypassing airports where he could have landed. Brian had flown Kobe Bryant and his family before and investigators say he possibly felt pressure to continue to the destination, a youth basketball tournament. The pilot was highly experienced. But when he entered the clouds as he was legally prevented from doing, he started a sharp climb and a left hand turn lost control in spiraled into the hills near Calabasas. At the hearing, NTSB Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg was frustrated. We pretty well know what happened. We have a very good idea off why it happened, and we absolutely.

"What Okay. All right. Yeah. So we're just standing by getting some more information that if we hear anything, we're gonna pass that along, and we're trying to get some get some images and some scenes coming in What's happening there in areas to the North Tonight, Colman looks like the worst of this is is through. I know it's late at night. A lot of folks staying up with us and a lot of folks have been asking me about the all clear And anywhere you're north of this line. You see this here Double Springs, Marion County over towards Hamilton and Coleman. You're in good shape. Some of the most active weather in the immediate short term is going to be roughly along the I 15 9 corridor. Let's check out what we have here. JP Yeah, We got some video trying to come in. But picture of the tornado crossing. I 65 no Fulton, Dale, just north of Birmingham. Extensive damage, a tweet coming in. And of course, we have the the roof boil on off the Hampton Inn and the ice 65 exit. Massive damage. There was looking at some of the pictures a few moments ago of that damage with no woman there right now, At this point, it's been kind of back and forth, and it's pretty much what we you know these marginal setups. It's It's very tricky like this, you can have one storm suddenly spends up And it was just incredible. The lightning I was looking north of the station here from Red Mountain earlier tonight, and it was just that continuous lightning. You know how it gets around here? When it's warm like this. We have severe weather night. Some of these storms, and it just had that ominous appearance to it. And and soon later we saw it rotate, and we've got a debris signature. And there you go. You got At Stony Brook Apartments in full Tyndale. Yeah, that's reporter Bria Chapman is checking out some of the damage up that way. Obviously significant damage Stony Brook apartments and the Hampton Inn there. Nice 65. So exactly Fulton between Fulton, Dale and Garden, Dale uh, Webster Chapel. Those were areas that were hammered and we're still getting pictures in and trying to get some of those pictures in from around the center point area. And around Carson Road. I think there's some damage through their based on what I'm getting from some of the reports on social media, so there's gonna be a lot of trees down. You've got some structures down and we may still have some situations out there where people are trapped in buildings. I'm getting kind of some rumblings about that. We're gonna follow up on but not a pretty sight out there with that storm that really hit a pretty populated area. I don't know the strength of the storm, but The weather Service is gonna have to figure that out tomorrow. But based on what we were seeing, it's not gonna be in a level of like ef 45 or anything of that magnitude, But you're probably just kind of eyeballing it. You may have EF to damage from this. And again they're gonna go out tomorrow and look at everything, but it was enough to take the roof off some of these commercial buildings and do some significant damage. Knocked the power out. Wanted trees down that sort of thing based on what we're seeing, so eager to see the weather service reports tomorrow on the strength of that storm at the end of the day, a lot of damage out there right now. No active warnings. The watch is in effect until.

"The G and Ursula show happy Friday, and we are grateful that you listen to our show coming up at 10 o'clock we're gonna bring in someone who became homeless with her two kids during the pandemic after her landlord gave her The boot. But right now, Ursula, we need to talk. And here's what happened. Let me explain. I don't know if you guys heard about the door dash situation. There was a video of a door dash driver that was berating a customer over there. Tip. The driver delivered the food and was not not not. Hey, I'm not giving you your food because this $8 tip was not enough. Yeah. Yeah, That's what happened. So anyways, that's the story. Which brings us to the next question and is real simple. When should you tip And who should you not tip? I know. Sometimes people are having this conversation like it's normal to tip your server and everything. But there's some other situations. I believe that Life is better for you if you if you if you can tip It would be better for you. So I want to talk about that a little a little bit. I'm already feeling nervous because I think compared to you, I'm gonna sound like a complete cheapskate. But I'm gonna pull a G right now. Can we all agree that holding someone's food hostage over a bad tip is not the right way to go? Not just that the right way to go. That's not that's not the right way to go so So my uncle John Scott, who was two story he was the driver for Hugh Hefner for a little bit back in Chicago. Of course he was. This is my This is my great uncle, My dad's uncle, and then he taught my dad and of course me. When you have the opportunity to tip in this and you're being serve, or it's a service that's being done for you where there's food or anything, I believe any and every opportunity that you can tip Do it because trust me, it comes back to you. And people wonder why they treat you like for a treat You like a million dollars. So, Ursula, I tip in all situations. I tip when I'm going to the airport. You know who you tipping in the airport when it will. I park my car at a parking area by the airport. Master part kind of gets you okay? So when they come and grab your bags, you tip boom, right? And what? What are you because I do, too, And I noticed that there are many people who are pretending that they forgot their wallets or whatever, and they're just jumping off that bus and not giving any money out, And I always make a point to give I'm not giving huge I'm giving like two or $3. That's cool. Okay, That's the thing that school now the night before, before you go on your trip. You supposed to get your dollars together like some people go to certain clubs and they have their dollars together. In this case, you have your dollar together for your vacation Now when you check into the hotel Ursula, huh? There's somebody right there. Hey, excuse me. Can Nelson can somebody get my bags? Oh, yes. Sure, sir. You don't matter. L can't you at the Hampton Inn doesn't matter what hotel you have them. Bring your bags up, and they'll bring your bags up Boom and with a few dollars look, Tip boom. Okay. This is so bad, because so often husband, I'll be like Lugging our bags up. No. Let them do it. So so you could go and get it. And then house housekeeping when it comes out every if you're there for 34 nights, everything gonna put a couple dollars on the bed. Okay, that I d o Okay. All right. Just a couple dollars on the bed with every every couple dollars. Chef. There's a couple dollars. No. You find you find that you get some extra soaps of extra towels. That's the little thing. Extra soap. Hey, I do Dumela soap speed. They will also be going with one swipe anyways. Now I want to talk about the restaurants because right now, a lot of people are going. They're doing a lot of pickup services because we can't dine in, right. So when you guys were going to the restaurants to pick up your food Do you tip the person for for take out A couple of days ago. I did, but I don't always and this is where I feel horrible or I will I see that the big line. Is there an empty and very obvious and then I'll grab a couple of dollars and put it in the jar instead. Instead, because every time I see that, or they turn that thing around, I feel like do I have to go 15% 20% Now I have been much more generous. I've tried to be much more generous during the pandemic. Okay, Because there is no dying it a Zilong is we don't have dying in on putting. You know, I realized that is a big part of their income to or I just feel like Oh, my look at the empty restaurant and I'm picking up some stuff I'm thinking, okay. I'm just gonna do my part. But traditionally if I'm picking up I have not been so I might just horrible. I've not been tipping. Yeah, I guess I got I got a tip in this situation. Ursula. Okay. How about here's another scenario I need. I need to ask about something because I worked in a service type job all through college. I worked Had a cosmetics counter. And, uh, no one gave me tips when I was I'm not trying to do. Ah, Hey, they didn't do it for me. So why would I do it for them? But what? Where do you stop? I don't stop, Ursula, because no one let me know. Hold on Now, Guys, guys, guys, Here's why I don't stop and I look I would love to be like everybody told you. You're such a nice guy. Look, I'm a little selfish to let me let me explain. Let's just say you're at a bar or something like that. And there's a bartender. Have you ever been frustrated? Where you like? Man? What is the bartender Not see me is taking me a long time. Because dollar Bill up. That's because you got you can't it can't be a rookie. Your very first drink. You give that bartender 20. You could do that. I guarantee you, Jeff. You for sure have to do it. But what sex ain't no way they see in me a second time. If I'm not getting some money about it. So again, there is nothing. There's nothing better when you do that. You'd be amazed.

A black man in New Jersey suing the police department after he spent 10 days in jail being misidentified by facial recognition technology. Groups in early 2019. The police were called over to a shoplifting incident at the Hampton Inn and Woodbridge, New Jersey, The suspect fled the scene, clipping a police car with his vehicle on the way. Weeks later, a man named Gear Parks learned police issued a warrant for his arrest. Parks. Uh, what? What asked his cousin to drive him to the police station to clear his name. But upon arriving, he was handcuffed and spent 10 days in jail. This isn't the first time that facial recognition software has involved in involved in suspect misidentification. Earlier this year, Robert Julian board, Jack Williams was arrested in Detroit and we talked about that story. Um Accused of stealing five watches, accosting $3800 from a shoe Shine Ola store in 2018. Unbeknownst Williams at the time, he'd been I misidentified by facial recognition Tech called Data works, plus Um So that now let's see Mr Goodyear Parks. I thought the charges and ultimately got them dismissed. His attorney says. The police and prosecutors pursued his client based on Leon evidence provided through facial recognition technology, which seems to have a inherent bias against minority users, which is quite fascinating. Indeed, Obviously, the reliance on this technology is premature and is resulting in some rather embarrassing mistakes for law enforcement. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways. And I believe forensic technology had been up to the task for most cases prior to the use of facial recognition technology. So how about we roll things back a little bit. Anyway? Flawed Facial Recognition Leads To Arrest and Jail for New Jersey Man, New York

"So this is, uh, issue that I think is something that has because here has been so busy with so many things. It's an issue that has slipped by most people, but it's not slipped by Cashmere Hill reporter with The New York Times We've spoken on Cairo nights. She is now joining us here on Seattle. Morning News Kashmir DYNAMITE Story in The New York Times about facial recognition technology. Can we let's start at the beginning of the story. Can you tell us a little bit about who is Nigeria Parks? And why does he matter in this big discussion about facial recognition technology? I feel like you're part that he's in New Jersey. Man. He's 33 years old. You started a grocery store. He now works making kitchen cabinets, and last year he was arrested. Um, for A crime he didn't commit on. See there was Where do I start to know there was a shoplifting incident at a Hampton Inn and in New Jersey, and this guy came in. He stole some candy. The cops were called When the cops got there, He apologized that he would pay for the candy. He gave the cops a Tennessee driver's license and when they ran it in, turn out to be fake. He, um Tried to handcuff him. He ran to his car. He pulled out very quickly. He hit a police car hit the calm of the hotel. And when the officer said he had to, you know, dive out of the way to get cannot be hit by the car on they found the car a mile away, abandoned into the only thing they had for the crime. Andre were this driver's license and You know, there was a problem today. There. There's fingerprints, but they decided to go with his driver's license, and they ran the photo through facial recognition technology and they got a match to night here, Park. And arrested them. And he ended up serving 10 days in jail on at the time that I've I've never been to the Hampton and I've never been dead to that town. You know, he just also happens was in New Jersey. We're talking with Cashmere Hill technology reporter for The New York Times. All right, so, so they arrest Mr Parks Based on what who? Apparently they were told by facial recognition technology who had committed this shoplift against subsequent potential, I guess assault on a police officer. When he was arrested. What was his response? What he was was he surprised that the police showed up two to arrest him. He actually went to the police station to say, Hey, you guys have the wrong guy. This isn't me. Um this is a case of mistaken identity on, do they? They didn't believe him. He Hey, did have some prior convictions in his youth 10. Years ago, he was arrested for selling drugs and he had spent some time in jail. So I think for the Costigan said, Hey, this guy said face matches. They've got prior convictions. He's our guy. Um so yeah, he went to the station. They arrested him. Um, at his Hearing. Uh, because he had these prior convictions. He New Jersey has a no bail system and so at the point system rather than cash determine if you're released before trial. The point is that he had to stay in jail. So he was in jail for 10 days. Well, I got transferred to a pre tile laundering program after he hired a private attorney, which ended up costing him $5000 on then for the you know, the next year, he was Battling this case, you know, he was offered a plea deal. You could take six years and in jail instead of going to trial, and you consider taking it just because he was afraid that he would lose it trial and because he had the prior convictions, he could have gone a very long sentence. It was really scary for him. On and Yeah, it's hard. The police the police always have told me have reported a lot of facial recognition. They say we've never arrest somebody based on Leon facial recognition. We just just the clue in the case. And we do other investigating, But this is the third case for somebody's been wrongfully arrested based basically just on a facial recognition match with very little additional investigation.
