Pete Hamill, legendary New York columnist, has died
"I have some sad news as well being informed that apparently legendary New York Post and Daily News columnist Pete Hammel has passed away. Unfortunately, at the age of 85 so he was a longtime editor. For the New York Post and a longtime columnist for the both The post and the News rush. You and I spoke with his brother, Dennis family, also a terrific columnist of mine. And, You know, people who know their history may remember this. But Pete Hamill was a pretty close friend of Robert Kennedy and Hammel helped persuade Robert Kennedy to run for president back in 1968. He worked on Kennedy's campaign. Then he covered it as a journalist, and he was one of four men who actually disarmed, sir. Hand, sir. Hand you know, removed his gun in the aftermath of that Kennedy assassination is a pretty good documentary series about that Kennedy assassination on Netflix. He's one of you know, when you talk about family you're talking about him and Jimmy Breslin. I mean those air, the legendary people. I'm saying Steve Dunleavy. I'm so sad about that, because he's really and you know, I gotta call Dennis the minute we get off the he Not only, though, would Bobby Kennedy, but he was quite The man on his earlier days dating Jackie Ah Onassis Onassis. "Welcome back to win the gate as we all await for the angel of death to pass over our houses and spare us much of the ancient Israelites. Did in the book of Exodus. You know the tenth plague. We take the time to remember a couple of people in the horse racing community who unfortunately were not spared specifically in the harness racing world. John Brennan was a four decade owner and trainer starting up at the harness track in Saratoga and then at the meadowlands in New Jersey he died on Tuesday march tenth at the age of sixty nine. Just as much of the world started shutting down. He was the first cove nineteen victim overall. Who LIVED IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY? John Brennan lived New Jersey but had recently been working as an official at yonkers. Raceway in New York where he came into contact with trainers carmine. And Vincent FUSCO carmine age. Fifty Five Vincent Age fifty three and their mother and sister all died from the virus within six days of each other carmine Vincent and their sister Rita were three of eleven fusco children. Carmine FUSCO lived and trained standard breads in eastern Pennsylvania and like John Brennan and New Jersey Fusco was the first resident of Pennsylvania to die from the virus to put into perspective. What these deaths mean in the context of the corona virus. We welcome in here to win the gate. Mark Ford who is also a trainer and the president of the standard bred breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. What did think as you heard of John? Brennan staff and that of the whole Fusco family to start with John job better than I were very very dear friends and he was one of these guys. Was I CONTI? Act like every day he was going to the hospital about something and you know after a while you sort of like put it off. He said what's John You know. It's no big deal but he been sick for it. Seemed like forever and finally we were supposed to travel on Friday going to be. Usda meetings in Columbus. And I talked to him on Monday at two o'clock in the hospital and the money was also the day of reckoning here with all these arrests being made and He was pretty upset over that you know a lot of the people we knew were involved in such and Tuesday morning. They've got another call at six o'clock and John died during the night so it really it really put things in perspective and really they really should be because he was such a dear friend and essentially dear friend of the industry to he was In a paddock. Every night at offers and it'd be horsemen had for years and years and towards the last two years he'd been the horse runs at the office and a USDA actor for the last twenty years or more and John was always there fighting for the horsemen and not only a real good friend and a really really good guy and I'm sure that they understood. We'll certainly miss him and It's been it's been one shock. You know for everyone so I certainly remember watching him drive at the meadowlands when I was growing up and remember when he was part owner and trainer of sugar trader. Who in two thousand and three finished runner up in the sport's biggest race. The HAMMEL Tony and one. Another leg of the trotting triple crown. The yonkers trot sugar trader. Crank it up at shooter trader effortlessly on now to take the lead solicitor. Hanauer given way on tours locked in third but as they come towards the top of the stretch and sugar trader has given them the slip. It's sugar trader by five. The forty nine edition of the front goes to sugar te traitor and I believe John. Brennan was on the Board of the standard bread owners of New York for more than three decades. What was he like as an administrator? He knew everything was going on and he was he. He's a true friend of the Horse. Didn't have a big family. Didn't have any kids. But he spent a Lotta time with the horsemen and more or less adopted a lot of their kids and you know he was. He had lots and lots of friends around and they just like he was. He was truly wanted to shock you. You just can't believe that you know he's saying he's not around. I come to New York. He was the first person if people that you meet on the backstretch man. He always said not big stable. But you don't have the ten or twelve all the time and was always was always there and it's Just terrible Shaw Mark. Ford of the Standard Bread Printers and Owners Association of New Jersey is with us here on indicate one of the sisters of carmine and Vincent fusco said to everybody. This is a virus to us. It's a person. What do you know of the effect these deaths have had on the FUSCO family or dear friends with carmine FUSCO for years and years? We traveled together. We he was ten of mine for for years and trillion our good friend and You know you've been in New Jersey. This is a blue collar family that has been working in the horse business for years. I mean the mother father three or four of their brothers and sisters and was just you know like you can't imagine freeholder Jersey off the festival family there's just so many of them and Vinnie Ginsburg is whether leading drivers freehold us. A few of and It's just it's one thing to lose a member of their family. I mean very very tight met brothers and sisters but I know a couple of years ago. They lost their father for for national causes. And it was such a you know such a big deal. But now you use parminder matriarch for the family and then his mother and sister and it just keeps going and then Vinnie was probably You know as long as they're just New Jersey people that I've been around forever and ever expected to be going anywhere else and have you understand this. I mean it's just it wipes you know like a big big part of your A big part of you that you know pop the Horse Population and as well as that. They're all good friends to an exam for personally. It's been a terrible we command you know. Life must go on but It's not GonNa be near as easy as well. I'll get to that in a second just so our listeners. Know carmine FUSCO SERVED A five-year ban starting in two thousand twelve from multiple drug offenses involving his horses. Much like Rick detro- in the thoroughbred world. Now as you know several thoroughbred tracks have continued to run with limited personnel on site during this pandemic with deaths actually occurring in the harness world. How are people and tracks coping and moving forward? It's it's just one of those things where this has happened so fast. I know it's been two weeks now since this happened but people were walking around the days. I mean it's just rocked our whole world. I mean it's one thing to cancel the racing where it none of us. Hannity income but this is real. I mean like you look for them. It's hard to believe that on my bus goes not maybe year anymore or five or six of the people that we deal with literally on a daily basis. Aren't going to be here anymore and It's just devastating. I mean I don't think people talk about a dose of reality. I mean for one thing if someone was killed in a car wreck I mean you could more and you can get over it or the family was You know if the whole fusco Harry was killed on a for instance a car wreck or a house fire or something or you. Can you think it over and you know that's the way life is? It's terrible we have to go on but with this stuff. It could be one of us tomorrow. I mean it's I mean people. I'm sure to take this theory seriously at all. Or maybe they're still not taking it seriously enough but these are things that we have to deal with. And it's this is a tremendously big deal because you know it could be any one of us tomorrow or the next day. It's it's serious stuff. I don't think you've seen media. Mark Ford President of the Standard Bred Breeders Own Association of New Jersey. Thank you so much for your time and for your candor and we hope that all of you can find peace and stay safe. I thank you very much and We'll be in

"The the enemy of my enemy is my friend essential. Exactly. That's appoint that. Hamilton had to teach Jefferson Jefferson thought because France had lent us money. They were really nice people. And since the Brits had fought against us, they were bad people and Hamilton had to persuade him. No France didn't lend us money because they're nice people. It was in their interest to do it because Britain was their great rival. So in the new book on on Hamilton, let let's get into some more details. What what is. The Hammel Tony in perspective on on the ability to tax the population and the ability for government to develop credit and issued debt in order to fund its ongoing operations. But one of the key aspects of the United States constitution, which Hamilton was one of the spearheads for in the seventeen eighty s you know he was a delegate to the convention was to get the national government, the fabric, the new federal government have its own revenue in the constitution allowed that. And then Hamilton is appointed the first Treasury Secretary, and he wants to restore really establish the public credit of the United States. So he basically restructures the US national debt into the modern treasury bond market with three different new securities. And then he uses the revenues that are coming in mostly from customs duties to pay the interest on that debt and very quickly in the early seventeen ninety s he turns the sort of junk bond. So the seventeen eighty s into prime government bonds. That are purchased not only by Americans, but by foreign investors as well. So Hamilton basically establishes public credit, but of course, he did a lot more. He founded the first central Bank. He defined the US dollar in terms of gold and silver, and part of his plan I think was you know if he creates these new securities government bonds and stock in the Bank in the United States, capital markets will be established a trade, these securities, and the new York Stock Exchange, we know is established under the button would tree in may seventeen ninety two. That's because the brokers needed a better trading system because of all the new securities that were being traded. So the securities markets are result of Hamilton's policies and the states, you know, he established as the Bank of the United States and the US government's gonna earn a profit by investing in it, state governments that say, well, we can start a lot of banks to and maybe take a position in them and earn some money. So we then have a banking system and the Bank of the United States was very large corporation for its time. And so that. Courage, the state governments to establish more American corporations and in my career, I've studied a lot of these things in terms of the numbers, and you just see that you know the the number of corporations rises rapidly in the seventeen ninety s the states are establishing more banks..

"Thanks for your call on thanks for the question the other two are right the issue is that we don't have significant right of passage where when that connected with culture we disconnect it from our culture and we don't have these things in mass we should be practicing rights of culture across the country black vote big but because we are does connected from our understanding all rights of passage are even an awareness that bit we don't go through it with rights of passage young people aren't to stay and the responsibilities of being a man and the responsibilities of being a woman they have the held there's passing on that information to them they learn respect and dignity and integrity and all those things that it takes for to be successful as a people so until we wake up and we start practicing right of passage in our communities we're going to be operating with this deficit and that's funny had that on long discussed only even called look at the coleman dot the brother tells you know some folks was you know there was preaching morsel spear jalin the race you level contests this and that's right but i think you know the culture in your spirit saudis in a twine itself and they can make that and that you know for you to just up spirit out of the united sculpture gives you the discipline and and and the same to wait your spear tell me how do you treat somebody eleven of yourself before you can someone and have some on this pencils before you could come to the double what other people another in the groups in culture you gotta brings on the table was an on something about yourself a feel confident confident about have met discussion so you know it's funny that you brought that up because i was going to be thought about that because i will give jumped on say and hey live images is is is is essential to us and culture as well and and in there and had it is you about the touching base is when you know i connecting back with the mother land with this culture and they with our yeah that's not necessarily we try bed in the sixties it and blah blah blah and and just that now the one working but what had him when when that went to build off into it in hammel conversation the sixties wells working that's why they stop it stopped.

"So he was you know pretty good to i wanna get it with a dog but anyway he's a lot more careful is mining outside that you know you always worried when you have cast around that your kids are going to take it your wives to take it right but you don't think your dog is going to eat so anyway this thought did i think i was money that there's no article i saw that nature vs nurture i've had this discussion with my clients before and with other people we get on the subject matter what would be like to clone your pick to think about your favorite dog your favorite catch your favorite whatever and it spending that insane amounts of money to clone of the pat are you going to get your same pat and answer clearly by most experts i am not one expert but i certainly have the same that's our as they do in the entries absolutely not there is so much that goes into shape in you have to exactly mimic everything you did some of that time when that thought you're trying to replace or that pat you're trying to replace and clone that the exact same stuff you get of exact same environment the exact same exact same exact same to have a chance at creating there are truly this a pat we are so she eight my prior experience is just ask any psychologist so it would be insane to think that by cloning a pat you're going to end up with the same pat so my recommendation is and i think is something else how many of you have had pets in the past and it pass and of course as a pat lover that you are you will replaces you'll get another pat or pets down the road i have many at home and that there are always is always something i can't i would have a very difficult time to say that so it's so ways the by far the best that ever because i think different characteristics differ traits difference races i've had with my subsequent hammel's there are so many that i look i know i have for example i'm sure i talked about it before my older oldest thought now my five is grow for grove or is it lacked labrador who if you makes it to march you months away he's going to be sixteen.

"The problem is you would be along as a teacher without attitude i think mostly the teachers encouraged this behavioral health and inspired i know i know which is part of what they get mates running the asylum okay if if if teachers are using kids political a that's the whole nother story i mean i thought whole nother story and i think those teacher should've been fired straight up if you're cursing a kid walk out of class for any kind a political move but that involves you your the problem you need to go yeah yeah they would they would answer that we just trying to make good citizens of the students yeah although there right singling and will and how to protest well then they should protest things that don't to it directly impacted and benefit the teachers that that's what they should be protesting i mean that's inflamed that's a story for another with another conversation for another time but parents also have to have high expectations for their children children will rise to the level of your expectation more often than not i don't know anybody is expectations are so high but their own realistic and i'm reasonable and your child has no chance a by getting if you're looking here create your fifth greater in saying you've got to cure cancer before six great okay we can toc but nobody does that but at the same time you should expect a's on every report card i would you don't get a's on every report card you should theater cared wow i was open you get a zone every you know every great what happened what we need you to make that happen the kids are not straight a students i get it but they should at least be high beat if you're accepting report card from an elementary school a kid that is or below word you need to really dig and intervene and and start to start help and i can't right now in high school that that's another story altogether sometimes you get bad great that thing just two or their parents i've come to the conclusion i knew those kids in high school i had one of those kids when he was in high school and i suerte just a to two in a way are you know but they younger they are they should need to should be hammel i get it and in elementary school.
