Professor Shows Painting of the Prophet Muhammad and Loses Her Job

"There's a university in Minnesota called hamline university, small Minnesota college, and hemline recently refused to renew the contract of an art professor named Erica frater. Why? Because in class, she showed two famous Islamic paintings that depict the prophet Muhammad. One is apparently from, well, these paintings are for between the 14th and the 16th century. Now, some Muslim students complained initially just one, but then later the university met with the sort of Islamic alliance on the campus. And it was the usual claim of being triggered. There is a woman, a senior named aram weta Tala, and this individual was in the class, this woman, and she says, I'm like, this can't be real. As a Muslim and a black person, I don't feel like I belong. And I don't think I'll ever belong in a community where they don't value me. Now, why don't they value her? Well, because apparently she believes that in Islam, it is not allowed to show any visual depictions of the prophet Muhammad. Now, the professor, by the way, Erica prater was well aware that it is controversial in Islam to show depictions of Muhammad. And so before she even showed these paintings, which by the way are famous paintings, as I mentioned from between the 14th and 16th century, she said that this is controversial, she kind of warned her student. She goes, quote, I'm showing you this image for a reason. And that there is this common thinking that Islam completely forbids outright any figurative depictions or any depictions of holy personages. And then she goes on to say, while many Islamic cultures do strongly frown on this practice, I would like to remind you there is no one monolithic Islamic culture.

This is masters in business with Barry riddles on Bloomberg radio. I'm Barry Ritz, you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio, my special guest this week is Spencer Jacob. He is an editor at The Wall Street Journal's heard on the street column before that he wrote the ahead of the tape column. He just wrote a new book. The revolution that wasn't GameStop Reddit and the fleecing of small investors, Spencer Jacob, welcome to Bloomberg. Thank you. So first of all, I really enjoyed the book. I read it on the beach this summer and a couple of weekends. Really reads like a fascinating novel if it wasn't a work of nonfiction, it could never have been made into a work of fiction because it just wouldn't be believable with it. It's crazy, right? It lends itself to a book and I knew that right away when the story began to unfold. I sent an email. I had a three quarters written book proposal about something else, sitting at home during the pandemic, and I wrote an email to the acquisitions editor at Penguin Random House, person I don't even know, didn't know then. And when I saw this story begin to unfold, I hadn't first article had not been written about it one of my sons. Let me stop you and just say the book came about and please pardon my language. Because your sons, self describe themselves as degenerates apes and retards. Can you explain why a group of people would self describe themselves that way? So I have three sons and two of them are very online. They're all online, but two of them are very online. They are on Reddit all the time. And they were on this forum on Reddit called WallStreetBets, which was at the epicenter of this story. And the people on this forum, it's an investing forum, but not really an investment cord. There's a different investing forum on Reddit called R investing. This is our WallStreetBets, which is a entirely different speculative, lots of access to grind, lots of social issues come up. It's not a straight up investing group. No, it's like jackass for finance. That's what it is. It's like, you know, you do crazy stuff on there. And you show off crazy stuff. And I don't know if a lot of the crazy stuff actually ever happens because you can't tell people are using pseudonyms, but they are all over that. And my oldest boy, he's not 23. He was a college senior on this happened, came over, and he said, dad, are you going to write something about GameStop? And so GameStop, they're all into video games. I've driven them there are lots of times. They were going there less and less over time, which is a problem with GameStop as a business. It's in a mall. It's old school. It's the blockbuster video games. Totally. Totally. And that's the problem. That's why it had been losing money for years. That's why that's how it found itself at the center of the story. The book is not really about GameStop and people always ask me about don't you think this, don't you think that about GameStop like I can talk to you about GameStop, but that's not really the interesting thing here. The interesting thing is this unprecedented thing that made it the most traded security in the world for a while. The most searched term in the world for a while. And from just total obscurity. And I said, no. And he's a friend of mine. This kid who I've known since he was tall as my knee had bought it and I took a look and said, well, he's doubled his money in the last two days. Maybe it should sell. They're talking about it on WallStreetBets. And I've seen this dozens of times before. You know, it's a kind of a flash in the pan and I really wouldn't hang on too long. And what kind of got my attention was he said, no, he's not going to sell. Ever. No, he can't sell. So what are you can't sell? And so I started reading the board and I was like, oh my God, they're executing a corner on this stock. So they all sort of agreed online to buy as much as they could and not sell. And then buy options too, which forces further buying buy options dealers. So it was this trap. Is this thing that you can't really do, as you know, Barry, like you can't not leave legally, right? You and I can't get together and do this, but a bunch of anonymous teenagers and others, it wasn't just teenagers, could talk about it in this venue without real fear of reprisal, because there are a bunch of little guys engaging in some speculative wishful thinking. That's right. And if you take at that point, there were about 1.9 million people on the forum by the end of the next month there were 11 million people. So they did quadrupled in four days, the number of people in this form is just people got so excited by it. And so those people individually may not have had a lot of money, but they did two things. First of all, there are a lot of them. And they all rushed in in the same way into the same stocks, especially GameStop, and also people were telling them, hey, if you want to get real bank for your buck, don't even buy the stock by way out of the money call options. On the stock. And then the options

"But we couldn't find another state with a policy prohibiting it. Community colleges didn't get any mental health care to prevent another Virginia attack. They did, however, get threat assessment teams, which all public colleges in the Commonwealth are required to have thanks to another statute passed in the wake of the shooting. Threat assessment teams try to figure out who might hurt himself or other people. Before it happens. They scan students social media accounts, They talked to professors and friends. If someone raises a red flag, people from various departments like campus police or the dean of students get together to discuss their concerns. Students may not even know they're on the watch list, but nervous schools mean watch lists can get so long as to be effectively meaningless. At Virginia Tech, for example, there were 600 people on the list in 2019. Since 2012. There have never been fewer than 350. Nobody knows for sure whether threat assessment teams actually prevent dangerous incidents. I talked to Toni Hagen, who's deputy chief of campus police at Virginia Tech, and asked him how he knows if threat assessment teams actually work. He gave me an answer. I heard from lots of other people, too. You don't until it doesn't You don't until you fail. So you have to assume that as long as nothing bad has occurred, that you're doing what you're supposed to be doing. Not everybody is so convinced Julian Peterson is a criminology professor at Hamline University who studied mass shootings. Unfortunately, we really don't know that they prevent mass shootings and that gets to this problem of measuring prevention, which is just kind of a massive problem. It's hard to know when you intervene if you've stopped something from occurring or if that wasn't going to occur in the first place, so We do a lot of things, especially when it comes to mass shootings that we assume are preventing mass shootings, but it's impossible to know if they really have done it. What we do know is that running threat assessment teams cost money. Nova spends $12,000 a year for special software, plus staff time for the interdisciplinary team..

Our current times just below the wage. Growing years that followed the failure of reconstruction. Yeah. They're they're not wrong. Right like people are sounding the alarm in a major way and it's it's you know, you hate to see Democrats basically go by the conventional I mean like this is this has been the story. Like I said for 30 years. We just we kind of acquiesce to their demands and at some point that's going to have to change you said over 200 bills and forty-three states. I mean what they are trying to take everything now and there there is no time to waste package and know essentially what we have is two years. We've got two years and people don't realize that they're like, oh we got Biotin for four years. It's like, yes, we have Biden for four years. But if we don't get your stuff done now, like people just won't be able to vote and will continue to slide right? And you know, I think everybody realizes now that Trump a walk in the park compared to what's coming. I mean the future of the Republican party will just like we look back on Bush like oh Bush was at least some level of normalcy will look back on Trump and Save At least some level of like not this I don't know if that's you know, what I'll have to I'll have to disagree with you there. I think Donald I don't think anyone could be as bad as Donald track cuz Not only was he stupid. He was he was a puppet Putin's although so he said cruise and some was A Mitchell Kahn only, you know, so I mean it's it's you know, what happened to the office is actually cuz I I totally disagree I think Trump is going to look like a saint compared to what's coming next. I mean just look at what's going on in turkey or any, you know, Thora Therrien country across the world where they fake coups and then send the military into jail their opposition. It's like everyone's like no that can't happen here. And we've already seen they're blurring of fact and fiction. We've got people in their separate universes if the Republican party took power again, and they said the Democrats are trying to Stage a coup and they're trying to do it with the military. It could be a totally fabricated log. I and they can say we need to act now and put them in jail. You don't think they could do it. I think they will do it. I mean that's where they're headed because they can't maintain power any other way and this just happens time and time again throughout history. And you know, you see it happening and again turkey is a great example. Austria looks like they're on their way. They're Brazil looks like they're on their way. They're the same. Scary thing about Brazil is they got bolsonaro is the Trump of the tropics? He's actually said like we need to go back to military dictatorship and you've got thirty percent of the country. That's like, yeah. And so like what if somebody stood up in America and said we need military dictatorship to stop the antifa leftist Chinese from taking over. I mean if we I'm sure the evangelicals would say yeah. Yeah the crazy left-wingers like we can have that and and when you're playing a game of giving the military who are just people off edible power and power corrupts a good as gold says, please ask Justin why there is no fire in the belly of the democratic party and I agree, you know that, you know, there hasn't been any like I always thought that we become complacent, you know what I mean hundred percent. I mean, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I mean corporate corporate money is so entrenched in our politics now, that's something like blowing up the filibuster. You've probably got corporate interests who give to the Democrats and Republicans who just say no. No. No, we can't have this lopsided Society where let's just only Democrat off. Republican we need to have it balanced style like the same group of people that said, oh no, the Republicans need to win the Senate. So the Democrats don't take everything and whether or not understanding is the Republican party is not the same Republican party there an authoritarian autocratic movement. Yep. And you know, I really think yeah, there are some corporate interests at play here me think that it's also we're in a place that we haven't necessarily seen in our lives. We haven't experienced at first hand. So there's a real, you know, we have trouble grasping what could actually happen cuz you're like, oh no Trump tried to become a dictator and it failed and it's like he's sort of tried, you know, he was he was doing a lot of things authoritarians do call in the news Faith discrediting everyone but there's there's no substitute for experiential learning like you can read the history book and say, okay this happened but until you age, Experience that you don't grasp this can happen. Right? And so yeah there there should be some you know, a lot of the progressives have a fire in their belly right? Like yeah, I'm not even I'm not even a huge fan of all the like some of the real far left, but at least they're like we need to take charge now, there's no negotiation Tweety kid. Thanks for the summer. I don't stupid chat Saturday. Do you think Steve Bannon and others like him are pushing to get? All right into office..

"Humor me for a moment, go back to the impeachment conversation if the Congress were to have time or if they do want to try and impeach him. What do you think is the act that the president has done of late? That is most impeachable. What would they hang their head on a campy that we don't like him? What's the thing he did or failed to do? It has to be something I think, given the politics right now. It has to be something about that speech that he gave. Um on was it was Wednesday morning Wednesday morning as they're getting ready to do that to do the review of the audit of the electoral votes. I think that would be it. But I've been trying to play with us for a couple days to in terms of saying, how would I formulate that? You know that the president advocated. Um Open rebellion and insurrection against the United States. I mean, that's sort of guessing that's where I think, um, Articles of impeachment would go for people who, just like Trump. They'd want to frame it that way. It seems to me like that arguments kind of thin. I mean, so we were going to find a line in the speech. After four years we're gonna find a line in the speech he gave before the mob stormed the capital. It was horrible. People died and dozens and dozens of police officers are in the hospital. Dozens or in the hospital, and dozens and dozens were injured. In one police officer died. A civilian 2 to 3. Other people died at the scene because of medical emergencies. I mean, that alone is just breathtaking to say nothing of the embarrassment of seeing our capital stormed by these crazy ass citizens, So I I appreciate fully the gravity of it. But if you're going to say the president was not one of the people that stormed the capital, so okay, What did he do when he gave a speech? Okay. What was in the speech? You're telling me there's a sentence in there that you're going to throw him out of office for? I think what is really in people's hearts that go down this path. David Schultz is on the phone line. He's a constitutional law professor at Hamline University. I think what's really in people's hearts. What's motivating them is just his general demeanor of late and they don't They don't like that. But I don't think we should be impeaching people just because we don't like them. So if you don't have a specific thing he did. I don't know how you throw him out of office. Based on impeachment. Am I absolutely agree at this point is that impeachment's not for, you know popular or, like you're failing the popularity contest and here technically in a court of law, um he engaged in free speech. He said You've got to be What Forceful etcetera, etcetera. Nobody. Um um Giuliani said. Rudy Giuliani said combat Donald Trump Jr said some insane things, the president said some very provocative things, he said. Your election was stolen from you and he said, Let's go. But I I'm sorry. I don't I don't know that you would impeach somebody for saying that it's listen get it protects. It's protected free speech to at the end of the day. I don't agree with it. I don't like the sentiments. But guess what? God bless America. You know if if he wants to say, um, we need to fight to the end. He gets to say that. And as you said here, you know, it's the For me. It's the yahoos in the goons who said we're going to go down there and storm the capital slob. I mean, they should be held criminally responsible for what they do what they did, and I hope they do have 30. Seconds left, David Just back a moment to pardoning him who would decide Would go to the Supreme Court to decide if the president can pardon himself. Eventually it would cause I suspected he pardons himself. Someone's going to challenge that. And it might wind up before the U. S Supreme Court who is probably gonna challenge. It is some prosecutor who's trying to prosecute the president of the United States at the federal level President's going to say I'm pardoned. You can't go after me, and that's how it's going to eventually get to the Supreme Court. If that were to happen. Okay. David Schultz is a constitutional law professor at Hamlin University. His book is presidential swing.
