opposition by the Michigan governor Gretchen Witmer we're joined by former Georgia congressman Bob Barr who is now in private practice in law in Atlanta and also is chairman of liberty guarded nonprofit pro liberty organization and the heads of the law enforcement education foundation and has a big consulting firm was well liberty strategies your take Bob on what the president had to say thank you tonight I enjoyed listening to the president last night that says a lot for me because I haven't enjoyed states of the union over the years back when I was serving in the house that got kind of tiresome go bobbing up and down constantly but I think the president last night did an excellent job not just of recounting the tremendous successes of his administration over the last three years but the successes for the United States he kept it very positive he kept it very specific and even some Democrats I noticed you know stood and applauded him from time to time and it's nice to see that little glimmer of bipartisanship quick through every now and then it does certainly was not a night for for bi partisanship between the president and house speaker Nancy Pelosi who as she is but the almost the entire speech looking rather upset and distracted thirty one of the more obvious visible sets of differences between presidents and speakers that we've seen in awhile I agree and even even prior speakers whether they're Democrat or Republican you know by and large well at least once the president and even if they don't applaud as much is C. O. the president's party members to stay at least would would sit there and you know pay a ten and most times in the evening last night she yeah I had a very sour expression on her face and here she was reading at one point it looked like she was reading menu what she was going to order for breakfast I mean completely descent arrested not think in a very very unprofessional coming up of course later today an estimated four PM eastern time will be the final Senate vote on impeachment coarsely drama regarding the outcome is long gone the president will be acquitted there's no way that the Democrats get the two thirds necessary of of the senators in attendance but I think that there might be some drama left in terms of the extent to which the senators leave the the the part is and surroundings if you will of of this entire effort good to see the number of Democrats who might vote for acquittal and the if there are any Republicans who would vote to convict it'll be very interesting because I think in the third but there are likely to be at least a couple or few Democrats who would vote for acquittal on and at least one of the articles may be on both I would look that particularly for example to West Virginia senator mansion Arizona senator Kristen Christensen Amman and Alabama senator Doug Jones for example so I'd be very surprised if we don't see at least a couple of senators vote for acquittal on at least one of the two articles and of course as we speak is about twenty four hours after the Iowa caucuses not handled well obviously by the the Democrats and we still don't have final results it would appear based on not quite two thirds results that it was a very good night for peak booted judge and Bernie Sanders they they certainly appear to have done well but it also indicates to me and I know and I think to a lot of other people at the Democratic Party nationally is is completely rudderless at this point there's no real leader there's no vision there is very little substance it's all anti trump and now I understand that to a certain extent but it does not portend well for the future of the Democratic Party over the next one or two can election cycles to be at this point and have no real leadership no front runner and particularly bad for for the Joe Biden former vice president Biden former Georgia congressman Bob Barr fifteen still coming up Iowa caucus vote total in question when American morning returns after these messages now the human resources VP Ashley Campbell has Kronos for HR payroll talent in time she's managing our work force like a rock star she even has her own type song.

Early Bowl Games, CFB Playoff & a Conversation with Jim Delany

"Joe's I'm Stewart Mandel L.. Joined by Bruce Feldman for our Christmas week episode Bruce a really special guest Pleased to have the outgoing big ten commissioner Jim Delaney on this show here a little bit. He is down to his last ten days or so on the job. But I How is your house your viewing experience first weekend of Bowl Games? It was good I got to see most of the Games. It was one thing I'll say is it was three. NFL Games. That ran on Saturday in those games. Were more competitive Than some of the bowl games I gotTA admit You know hats off to Fau. They had a coaching change and even without the coaching change. I think a lot of people would have thought okay. You have a bigger group of five really good team. SMU AGAINST A smaller group of five and it turned out to be a blow out but not the way. Yeah probably a lot of us would have expected so hats off to the owls. I thought that was a real head-turner The other one that jumped out at me. I think is Kent State it considering how bad that program was Not long ago I mean Sean. Lewis has stepped up there and really made a a huge impact. They are a fun team to watch they at their first bowl win in school history On the first first day of the bowl games it was one of those reminders of what I think because they had to really scrap just to get to be bowl eligible. I think that they are a great example of Y. No there aren't too many bowls it's five hundred team that got into a bowl game. They were impressive how they handled it. And it means a ton to that program Graham and I think Those players deserve the spotlight. Yeah I got that one wrong. I picked Utah State to win by like thirty. Whoops that's bowl season for ya the SMU ONE SMU Fau? Definitely surprise me as well. I think that that. SMU's one of those teams that got a lot the hype because they were doing things they hadn't done a long time and then it just kind of unraveled You know their their signature win was TCU and then TCU doesn't end up making a ballgame So hey that crazy shootout with memphis though You know it's interesting. There was a time when everybody was lobbying for their respective team. Conference for the Group of five New Year six bowl and Michael Rescue was furious that at one point. SMU is ranked behind Appalachian State. Obviously Mountain West. People were furious. That Boise State didn't get more credit Compared to the AC and then both SMU eastbound Boise State Mountain West Champ gets blown out by Washington honestly a Washington team. That wasn't all that great this year but I felt like nick and kind of I think you had the same hunches. Well and Chris Petersen's last game that they would. They would come to play and they did. That was a Thorough domination and now we all wait to see what Jacobson do. Yeah look I mean this is now Jimmy Lakes program. There's already been a little staff shakeup. Bush Hamden the offense coordinator. WHO's there for two seasons? He is already out as well as One other offense of assistant so one thing to keep an eye on and I'm GonNa have a story on this on the athletic Later this week is there's a lot of sizeable offensive coordinator vacancies out there. So Bunch in the PAC twelve oregon is looking for an offense coordinator as his Washington. As is cal- I think there's going to be quite a few more coming There's you know look. There could be a few big ones in the south as well as the ones that already have had coaching changes. This is where they're looking for guys so it's an interesting subplot to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks Again as we mentioned a few weeks back You you know. We both have a lot of respect for Chris. Peterson thought it was cool. To see the way he went out We'll see if he ever comes back to coaching or what he does next. He's somebody I would. I'd love to have on the podcast at some point down the road Just because I always thought he was one of the more interesting people in coaching even though sometimes he didn't always WanNa show oh you his hand publicly so hats off to him stew before we get to Jim Delany though This is probably our only chance to restore at least on the audible to talk about the semi final games. And you'd think it feels like they're way off in the distance but as we're taping this They're less than a week away. feels like the right up on us. Does I mean to me. The teams arrived working on this part on Sunday night and the teams arrived. I think a couple of them at least arrived in Phoenix already. It's nuts it's It's playoff semi final week already. So how do you break this down. I know you didn't want to tip your hand on what was going on especially in Europe ballgame. You're going to be covering the one in Phoenix covering the one Atlanta for the athletic. So Oh

Long FEared Hong Kong Climactic Conclusion Delayed, For Now

"Will start in Hong Kong where the long feared climactic confrontation between protesters and security forces. Seems seems again to have not quite happened. A standoff is ongoing between police and protesters who have occupied Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This particular kill a battle has been one of the most violent of the demonstrations which have beset Hong Kong for the lost several months. Protesters have deployed Molotov cocktails and bows and arrows. Rose against police who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets Stephen. We'll start with the eternal question here. The rapidly becoming eternal question which is is Beijing prepared to wait this out for ever if necessary. I doubt it Now I'm old enough to remember. What Hamden Amnon Tenement Square in nine hundred ninety nine but actually to have been Work I wasn't there but I mean I was working at. The BBC is covering what was happening elsewhere in eastern Europe when we kept close eye on that as well on I remember saying to someone on the third of June nineteen thousand nine. You know this could all end in tears. And of course it was on the night of the third fourth that they sent in the troops Given the kind of system come a communist China has I can't see that they can allow this to go on and and I can see a gradual buildup And the fact that you know the police seemed to have been allowed to act without any any comeback at all I mean there there's been filmed. They don't seem to be worried about in a film was being shot at very point blank range of protesters protesters being beaten. And so they they. They seem to have no No worries about this at all is if there's not gonna be any comeback on them and that suggests a build up to to a point where China may well turn around and say. Well we don't care what the rest of the world says. Hong Kong is part of China and We're GONNA keep it that way. And in which case they could send in troops so I think there is still a buildup guy on I find it very worrying Terry on that subject of the apparent Abandoned with which Hong Kong police are increasingly acting and Steven is quite quite right too pointed out that they they are getting increasingly rough and increasingly indiscriminate and there doesn't appear to be the official restraint on that but to what extent do we overlook the human factor in a situation like this is not to excuse the behavior of Hong Kong police or indeed any police when they exact outside they remitted it but these are people now who are physically and psychologically exhausted. Yes I think if you see reports from in particular the impact on on these students who trapped inside the university tear gas water cannon. You know that it's not it's thirty eight. People were wounded over during Sunday night. So you know lots of people and then you hear from people trying to get the word out there saying yeah exactly that they all. They are exhausted and they've even been some really worrying comments with student saying look. We're we're we're prepared to give our lives in this cause And you know obviously nobody wants that to happen. But you think the you know the more and more that's The protesters feel will literally. They are literally under-siege The the less and less likely they are to to want to stand down and there seems to be no kind of process I mean they put demands food. What they wanted to there seems to be no kind of negotiation and in the meantime in Hong Kong is being is suffering real problems for this? I mean if you look at the economy automate started to contract. The tunnels are closed. Roads are closed. Schools have been closed. And there's even a threat now. The local elections will be cancelled which is probably likely to make the protesters even more cross. Just seem to be situation. That's the is escalating In on the subject of that Esscalation Stephen have we. Are we approaching. Have we past the point. which which often occurs in similar situations at which the the violent starts to feed on itself everybody on both sides kind of lose track of what the protests were about in the first place and especially in Terry quite rightly points out that people have been injured some seriously that becomes a self perpetuating writing thing once people start to think well people have been hurt in this 'cause therefore the cause must be pursued on the fate it does Also given the the the focus of the protests at the moment is coming from students Always rely on the fact that young people think it you know I can go in and they can say things. I you know. I'm prepared to die for this. And so on because they don't believe they will And and similarly here you've got students and again if I can go back to nine hundred. Eighty United Gentlemen those were student protests. And the students who who thought that you know they don't have such life experience they think life can only be better we let protest and we'll get eh And they don't really understand the I think the threat to themselves even when they see all this violence around them is always going to happen to someone else. Thanked is often an element of that that and so they. I think they don't seem to be backing down on the country. They they are getting more violent and as we say the police too. I mean that their actions are reporting reporting one an interesting point that I noted was that a lot of the police have been heard speaking mandarin to each other. As opposed to Cantonese he's which most people speaking Hong Kong so are these police who've been drafted in from mainland China. which is is that kind of the thin end of a wedge? It reminded me of when the summer when there was big demonstrations in In Moscow which didn't go far this of course but there were big demonstrations and the police acting there were often. It's very difficult to find a policeman in Moscow. The WHO from Moscow. They're normally they come in because they they get a better life living there and so they will do as they're told similarly are these Mainland Chinese police who are now in in Hong Kong or who've been living in Hong Kong like the the the the the system that An prepared to to to to to keep it themselves. So you've got there. They're very high stakes on both sides. Terry we did see after a fashion over the weekend. Chinese soldiers deployed in the streets of Hong Kong. This was people's Liberation Army soldiers leaving their barracks to help clean up. Is that just well. I mean there's a number of ways to look at that. It might just have been soldiers leaving their barracks to help clean up It might have been a warning of further escalated or might have been kind of a PR exercise. Yeah I think I probably I tend towards The second of those that you know that they this is a deliberate. We are reminding you that we are here. I mean remember the earlier on in these protests we saw images from China of troops in a big Football Stadium I think was in those those images were it was kind of a big. You know just so you don't forget we are. We're here and although we're trying to make it look like we're just helping you nicely We don't we don't have to play so nice I would. I would think that that is probably Probably one of the main factor to that. I mean I'm just going back to what we were saying. I think we can't forget. The students are not probably analyzing this in geopolitical terms as the role of China. What's the rest of the world's reaction action going to be? They probably just think that they're in the rights. And you know I think to a large extent they are. They say we would like more democracy. And we don't have people extradited to China. We don't entirely he wants to be Run by China and you know maybe we should give them more of the benefit of the downs. You know in the same way that we did to protesters in whether it was eighty. Nine or Chinaman Square you know th. They may get crushed quite literally by geopolitics. But let's give them a shout.

"Oh three the momentary glimpse of the Connecticut. Police shooting is getting perhaps new ammo for protesters live with more on the story WCBS reporters, Sean Adams, Sean paula's, a to talk about your Connecticut. Switched on the camera initially and state police say that's violation of standards a hamden officer turned it on just to after the shooting. And that part of the critique was not really there with Mike compare. What's more the general approach of doing more with less doing more with diplomatic sanctions? And that kind of pressure is very much an approach that the Obama administration took throughout their presidency. The difference. I think it's important. I mentioned to my column that. You know, the administration tried to eventually have a rapprochement with Iran and the Trump administration, particularly Mike Pompeo has really tried to rally the world in America's allies against your honor. That is an important difference. The Middle East, but the approach which was which is to say that Trump is with Brian forces from Syria at this moment and talking about restoring forces from Afghanistan for the approach of using other levers of power and not relying on the military that has remained visit in that respect. I think that you know, the foreign policies are similar. What's the downside of that approach? Well, I think there's a downside is that you have a very ambitious policy agenda for the United States, which is to counter Iran in all of its forms and proxy throughout the Middle East to continue to keep the Islamic state and other SUNY Jihadist down and be honoring some ways against Russia with a smaller military foot, Chris, and this is compounded.

"Places like that their big thing is they feel left out and i'm an independent so i have been for fifty years so i'm not gonna sit here and say who i'm four but people will figure it out someday i'm just playing on his by by saying that we've got young people who are leaving places in droves in parts because they feel is nothing they're they're they're a lot of young people are not reaching their full potential in schools up there because they're not that push and all of this stuff that you've just mentioned has a lot to do with it because the people in the north resent the people in the south because the people in the south it looks like they're always controlling everything and they feel left out so you know you draw that line wherever you wanna draw north of waterville north of bangor east west those folks up there really hurt and and and i you know for whoever sits in that big chair up there they're going to do something because it's it's it's just killed us i mean i i had to sit with people yesterday because they want my program to go all the way up to van buren in places like that to work with kids there as well as we work with kids down here well you all know i'm chasing money all the time i've made a commitment that and i've already got in trouble in new york over it we're going north for twenty nineteen we're now in bangor will reach an over the hamden and belfast but we're going to prescott with going to van buren we're going to have kids from they're coming down and meeting the kids here on equal terms because when you get a kid who's a freshman and he's talking to another freshman from windham or from you know from gorham example for a couple of kids you know from over your way they all of a sudden no matter what their kid looks like they sit there and have a conversation they say jeez that kid kiss at some of the issues i have right i need this i need that the kids.
