Interview With Trey Haley

"Hey, guys welcome to the black GRONER's podcast. I'm your host lying and as you probably guessed. Unless? You've been hiding from it. We're still in the Kobe nineteen. We're still hanging out in the pandemic. Times out of ten, you're probably trying to figure out what you're going to watch on the streaming service. You know what movies are out right now and at the same time things are being canceled and push bag. But every once in a while, you can find like a little project, a little indie project this last through that, you can check out the me wouldn't have got the tension in the past and the past Hollywood because reinventing these days. It's all. Got Me thinking I'm like well Andy Andy Projects `Dinu thing now for Hollywood can be a new formula for how Hollywood Cannes film because they're used to the smaller budgets and used to make things work. But you have to take my word for it I. Do have an expert with me today. My guest today is Indie director Trey Haley and he's has had quite the influence on bt plus if you see where I'm going with that. He also has a series, the family business, always a bridesmaid which features the visa which you guys know by the way is going to be bad woman. So I, had the in my head to point that out straight and his his my favorite project of his at ease erected is called note to self. It's like a really cute romance movie like I don't know if you guys are check this out as Christian keyes Letroy. Lucky I just it's. So it's so I love I didn't know I didn't know you directed this trey and I decided to get shot because that's one of my favorites. Thank you. Thank you. You're welcome. Go ahead I'll. I'll let you take talking to know enough I just want to keep you up here. Appreciates you. Thank you for having me on and. Yet notice we shut that several years ago on actually Christian actually wrote that moving Christian keys actually real. Wow. Okay. So that was cool. When you know like you said, Eva was evil Pickford and I mean, that was a really fun movie to do that was Yeah. It looked like a lot of fun like I was always wanted like so you never know I guess and I'll get we'll. Get hopefully we can get a little secrets from you and and how you've got an industry but you never know when you're going to get another one of those projects but to me it was so cute I would have wanted a second one but you never know what's going on you know with that kind of stuff and you know that world and Hollywood and everything right? Right? No No, you know That wind just it was just that one note to self. Really what? Part to ever really created for it but right right Sometimes, we get the part to sometimes it's just like you know it's like even always a bridesmaid people keep asking. Is there going to be a part of this? You know no Yvette Nicole Brown wrote that movie and that. She's now. Made her thing we we should make our to we'll let you know what would Yeah Right. But yeah. So yeah, that's cool. But yeah. So you have a lot of a lot of products going, which is really dope because you kind of like I think it's really cool. your career by the way when I was researching because you, you're kind of you're kind of under the radar but not necessarily like your hat and stuff. It's just Hollywood had this weird way of like surveys out there as we know yeah, yeah. It's it's one of those things I think as we continue to go. Yeah we like let the work speak for itself. You know a lot right now what we do, they see what we do. We also consider ourselves in indy studio in meaning like we you know from locations to our resources out here in Los Angeles to the relationships we have with distributors in allowing ourselves to be positioned to where we still have ownership within our property that we create and collaborate with networks or distributors where we both owned The property together you know like. Fifty or or licensing deals where we bring in the capital two so that we have some crew you know more creative. Input into what we're making so that we'd contrite or read about the Dome of these projects is well. And do you feel guess going on what I was off the top? Do you feel because I feel in my opinion any projects could kind of give a rollback or or blueprint for how they could go about filming. 'cause I know everybody's been question is how are they going to finish a lot of these TV shows? You know how they're gonNA finish she's movies because you guys correct me if I wrong with you guys deal with on a daily basis. Okay. Budgets. How am I going to get this done with this little better? You know these amount of actors yeah. Yeah Yeah we look like we we always say we. We do our best to quality you know every new project, we just make sure we're growing and building and building level. We can make sure that are actors are excited about working but the big thing for us is given people rolls that they don't often get. As one of our things, you know when we cast, we look for opportunities to give people unique. Like we say, Hey, will you know what this person may be interested in his role because they've never done this before you know right earl instead of looking at somebody and say they will never do it. They may actually do it because they've never done it before it's kind of like the Halle Berry scenario with monster's ball right nobody. Yeah. That role because she was at the time is far will you know obviously, they didn't even consider her it first for this, but then our passion to play something. So different. Placed her into this situation. So it's a of actors here that are just always been putting by. So doing the same thing, you see them doing those same. Sometimes, they always win the same role. What's not good that they just want to do the same role that's what they're being presented to him. A lot of times will right take you flip it say, Hey, I know you do that. That's your bread and butter, but here's a scenario. May We pay half of what you get. But right right. But it now is going to show you the value. Is it for you something different so now you can walk away from this people can say, wow, I never see this person like that before which explain exactly. So it's about also giving people adding value that's what our world collaborative company we love like whether it's behind the scenes in front of scenes we're always in collaboration and making sure we have a win win scenario with everybody we work with but then when this covert scenario as you were saying. It's also about. You know we're we're about to go back into filming at the end of the month and.

Heidi Klum & Seal's Ugly Legal Battle

"Walk to the top so much to today. Let's dive right in starting with highly clue and sealed nasty feud the exit ugly legal battle over the kids she's trying to bring their four children to Germany. While to films showed there. Now seal who has joint custody of the kids does not want them to go Heidi filed for an emergency hearing then seal filed for his own response telling the court he believes Heidi has a hidden agenda to move the children to Germany in keep them away from him. Now we all remember how do you feel as a loving couple back in the day they kept doing their mouths all the time but now things seem to be getting so ugly between them. Twenty twenty honey this year is a raging dumpster fire everyone. is so paranoid and scared for every single thing in their lives and if I was I. I understand his paranoia. If you're going to go to Germany, you're GONNA love it. Their schools are going to open your parents are there you get to spend time with them? What makes him think that she won't say Oh my God the kids and loving it here we're going to stay for another six months I understand. But the thing is it's like, okay I understand where he's coming from as well. These are his children. But when I was lied when I was reading the court documents, he literally says or his lawyer says on his behalf well, I understand that we don't have a specific schedule in place to see the kids but I still don't want them to live somewhere else like it doesn't seem like they're necessarily a weekly priority. It's kind of just like whenever he finds time to see them and I'm sure she finds that to be inconvenient inconsistent, disrespectful and hurtful to her children. So if she wants to go to Germany which all the points you made are valid the schools are open her grandparents lived there. She's German she's probably a national treasure. He can fly to Germany and spend time with his children the way he's been doing it in Los. Angeles. Well, that's not saying every week. That's the thing is with custody you use it or you lose it I mean, if you have the right see the people I mean he did say just to be fair in the arguments he did claim that she makes it difficult says that the kids are sick all the time I'm not sure what's true obviously but either way you can enforce to see your children. That's what. Your legal rights is according to their custody agreement. So He needs to make sure that he ensures that that happens I. Don't think that he's to win this one because she has really plans it out. She doesn't really seem to like have a reason to stay in Germany forever she is said, I'm leaving on this time I will be back by this time even though it's my Christmas I will send the kiss. Christmas. So, right Is Making a big. But that's but if you put that in legal documents and sides like even though the children's spent Christmas with sealed last year, I'm willing to let them spend Christmas with him this year it seems like she's really trying to work things out and I know that we've seen this sort of in the past where if she's saying the kids are sick or it's not time, it's probably because she feels like whatever he was just drop in and see his children is disruptive to their schedule. Yes but I mean. Fair either. But that's when you say okay this is not fair to my kids. Let me get this in writing and let's go to court and let's get a supervise in stable schedule. Don't bring it up when you're ready to move to Germany you guys have had uh Obviously. So hadn't seen kids on a regular basis in years go ahead and put that on file. But the problem is if a parent moves the children outside of a state line and the kids go ahead and get a life, they're they're in sports they're in school they're the mom can petition for kids to move the residences to another state. Imagine another country six, thousand miles away I don't know how to fight custody between California New York much less California in Germany standing. There I understand him being scared. But at the time I just don't think he's GonNa win this one because she's being very clear about coming back. I mean she's not really she's filming she's working. She's providing for her family show happened to be moving over there because of Kobe reasons and it is a weird time and I think you just have to be flexible. So I hear seals concern but I don't think he's going to win this one I think he's GonNa get to take gives you know what's also What's interesting is we just saw this with Brad Angelina as well where their custody case and divorce case had been going real smooth for two years and all of sudden in made a left turn because somebody thought somebody was influencing the judge. It's crazy that we haven't really figured out the facts of what this pandemic has on people. I mean when the Great Depression happened and the financial thought fall of two thousand and eight happened two or three years. Later we started thinking I got everyone's depress. We have the this generation of anxiety riddled people what's happening to people in the time of corona is this paranoia is really get into them and we're going to see a lot of stable and settled court in custody cases begin to get rocky because people are paranoid that their kids are going out and seeing people. No, I'm just saying it's crazy you. Healing. Really affect the roller is going to be in Time magazine. That is showed. A words I'm telling you true. Affecting everybody is true.

"Today's national news headlines. Yes Mishan. is standing by with National News, but I in in today's Tame News Today Halle Berry has decided to back away from playing a transgender role in an upcoming movie after receiving some backlash online now halley revealed last week it was an instagram live interview that she was preparing to take on a role for a new project, but had not been officially cast in the role. She explained it's a character where the woman is a trance character, so she's a woman that transitioned into a man. She's a character in a project I love and that I might be doing. And she also added that she liked to take Halley said I'd like to take a deep dive into the Trans Community while the transgender community immediately criticised Halley for repeatedly. Miss `gendering the character as a woman and also for taking on a role that would be more accurately portrayed by a trans actor, so halley did issue. Issue an apology earlier this week, and she said over the weekend I had an opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man and I like to apologize for those remarks as a cyst gender woman I now understand that I should not have considered this role and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their stories so Halle. Berry has A. Look I mean it does make sense. If you go have a role to let somebody play it. Who would know more about it than no more body know? But in Hollywood. They don't know how to do that, but at the same time halley being actress. Has a right to go out for any role. She won't like if they have a role and therefore white man and I go out. Of course, trump's critics claim he's the one playing politics. While the nation is still struggling to eradicate the virus. Meanwhile Joe, Biden announced the plan yesterday aimed at rebuilding US supply change with a focus on making sure the country does not have. Lin-Manuel Miranda responds to 'Hamilton' slavery criticism

"By the way. Did you guys catch Hamilton streaming on Disney plus. Mass, of course despite massive success, there's renewed criticism about how writer and Star Lin-manuel Miranda's didn't go deep enough into the founding fathers role in America slavery history and lend totally gets it. He replied to one twitter user with all the criticisms are valid the sheer Tony of complexities and failings of these people I couldn't get or wrestled with, but cut I took six years, and fit as much as I could in a two point five, our musical I did my best. Halle Berry apologizes and is no longer considering a transgender role in upcoming film

"Holly Berry. She was supposed to play a transgender in a new movie. But after receiving backlash from the LGBTQ plus community, she decided to apologise and said she's not going to do it. We're taking your calls. 805 +851051 Not a thing with that is I see both sides. But you know, as if you go to acting class, or if you study acting, they teach you how to embody different people in different things. So when you become active because you know I was that there's being I don't know if you know that, but I was in two movies, but that's neither here nor there. But you know what they teach you to be an actor. They actually teach you how to become different characters. So Just curious what you guys think, national man. You said you see it on both sides, right? Yeah, definitely see both sides and I totally can understand. You know the transgender community wanted to be represented. You know, there's not a lot of transgender representation in TV and film world role when those roles do pop up. They want someone from their community getting getting those parts totally get it totally understand, because I don't think that If the role of assistant and woman our man is out there highly doubt Hollywood is reaching out to transgenders taught discipline those

"This is a corkscrew. This is what turns the crank this. This becomes her her the driving. Engine Right Cattleman you know how in real life those guys are probably really handsome. In the movies they look generic. They just like generic bad guys. Yeah they put like Weird Matt powder on their faces to make them less attractive. It's like if you splash them with warm water. You'd be like damn on. The one hand is kind of cool that Halle Berry is joining this. Lineage of Cat Women and the movie is making. It seem like there is a lineage of actual cat women but okay. The movie can do that but on the other hand is joining this long family of other cat women. It's like Earth Kit and Julie Newmar on the show and Michelle pfeiffer perhaps most famously and then there's an hatheway in the third. Christopher Nolan Batman Movie Batman Deduct Nate Rises Vent Razzoo's. Thank you very much. The on the other hand Halle Berry is playing a cat woman who has nothing to do with the DC universe. I don't know where this woman is from. I don't know I don't know what town this is like. We're calling AH got them. But we're being real nice because first of all every other cat woman as far as I know was named Selina Kyle and they were all basically thieves and cap burglars and they didn't really have superpowers. They just like it was a comic book. They just they were. They weren't bad they were just drawn that way. If you know what I'm saying they they. They were thieves who happened to have real agility and wall climbing prowess and that sort of stuff and Batman was really into them. Oh yes she does know. Erica is this. She becomes cat woman. Is this origin story. Does the cat have to fall in there with her to I mean? This is the only kind of suspense I like these days. It's not spider man. It's not spiderman or spiderwoman for that matter. Although it's up this might be up for debate when when the accident starts but I feel like it's a combination of venom and Mr Manhattan and like I dunno like it's all of these things wrapped up in one. He happened to be standing right next to the box by the way he's like a black woman near city. Nobody'll miss her. It's fine just turn on the pipes. Honey what what underground labyrinth is where I? I don't know but you know what the truth is Jenna. This is where they dump all the chemicals into the river. That's not a water water. Val that's a that is for dumping the chemicals into whatever whatever. Gotham river is. That's how that's like. That's the bill in Bath Wesley. Doesn't this park. Kinda REMIND YOU OF LEMONADE. A little bit beyond say visual album. It looks very it. Looks so similar. Do you think this was ambiance as mood board for. Oh my God. I mean it's entirely possible both characters. They are in this room space there in this watery tunnel. They are going through this period of deep incubation station Halle Berry just beyond say journeying through an underworld dealing with Pluto dealing with Haiti's I mean very colty very witchy. Look I hope the links there I approve into it? Oh that's brilliant less okay now so. I do some questions here. What are the real cast in the digital cats like in? How long did Halley have to lay there until they all do they were supposed to? Do you know what I was just thinking though. This is the real cats and it's better than cats. You know cats. Kohl's is that what they're called. I forgot this. Is the Jelly coat yet? That's the ROKA. This is some carriers proudest moment. Wait what's IT GONNA do to her? Giver Co Vid. Is the origin story. Recover not so dark so I used to have a cat and it did this to me in the mornings. It loves soon my chest and BURRI. That's cat breath in my face. I never I never had anything. Half succeeding happen is. What's happening right now? So I wonder if you're Halley. You know like the reason you put up with being a mousy sort of Klutz for the first twenty minutes of this movie is that you know that you're at some point. GonNa get to kick some people and jump on some railings or something. I mean Halle Berry had already been in superhero movies. I mean she was in some of the best expert movies in my opinion X. Men which came out in two thousand and the next two two thousand three is that right and she played storm. You know and it's interesting actually remember because I love those movies and in a way she was kind of the weakest link there too and it's it's not really her fault. They just didn't really give her a lot to do in. Those movies gave her a bad white wig and she just made it really windy. Remember cyclops Zoe's like storm a little cover and she would grab the armrest in my car is would roll back in her head and the fog would ascend and it's like were. She was my favorite x men. And yes that's what happened her. So maybe highly read the script and was like I do WanNa crouch crab walk down an alley and look at some spiders in high def. Yes that is this. Is this true to her origin story. Does she fall Nevada Chemicals? I gotta look this up just like she get bit by the cat that she found the chemicals. I just need to know I love that. You need to know this I just. I'm very curious. Do you would ask you would ask Let Me Rack my brain for a second. I don't recall this happening to any cat woman. An any of Bob Kane's additions. Account woman like it even subsequent additions cow woman. She just likes to steal things. She just a thief. No cats gave her a virus and turned her in to an actual cat. The as far as I know the other women just liked to impersonate cats because it was a sexy thing to do because she is the creation of men. No women have had any say in the creation of this character. She's just been pulled on some strings by some dude. Let me just read you? What Bob Cain? The creator of cat woman thought he was doing when he invented this lady. This cat woman Creator Bob Kane saying in his Memoir Batman in me I felt that women were feline creatures and men were more like dogs. Well dogs are faithful and friendly cats cool. Detached and reliable. Cancer is hard to understand as women are. You always need to keep a woman at arm's length. We don't want anyone talking over. Idols and women have a habit of doing that. So there's a love resentment thing with women. I guess women feel that. I'm being chauvinistic to speak this way but I do feel. I've had better relationships with male friends than women. I feel like this unnatural. Binary explains decades of Sour relationships between men and women and then just wowed all goes back to the DC comics universe. This explains so much about the American psyche. Screw Jane Austen. We're going for Bob Kane. Bob Kane started at all who fully.

Halle Berry wears nothing except a pillow as she nails viral social media trend

"Next example of celebrity losing their mind on social media is Halle Berry. She's doing the pillow challenge. You know the pillow challenge. It's like one of these social media trends right now where people take a pillow and then they sit at the waist with a belt and they like where it they wear a pillow. Oftentimes they're naked rhyme the pillow. It's like you know you never know what's going to crop up. You never know what the next trend is going to be. But this is the trend of the moment. Where all at home? So we have time to take a pillow and since it with a belt. Halle Berry took to the Graham and posted a picture of herself doing the pillow challenge in her gorgeous Louis. James Lipton, ‘Inside the Actors Studio’ Host, Dies at 93

"To start with some sad news and that is the James Lipton passed away so so the age of ninety three and he was dealing with cancer but he passed away peacefully this morning at his New York City home you know he of course was the host of inside the actors studio who's a veteran TV writer and had a storied career in and around to television and film in inside the actor's studio he would interview actor is big and small to kind of pick their brains about the craft so it was really perspective that you would get on these stars well I loved it because just as a regular layperson yes was not an actor it still was so fascinating to hear them talk about their craft and how much they how much work they really put into developing character and the list of people that he interviewed on that show I mean every single star I I could I mean Ben Affleck Halle berry Jeff bridges Morgan Freeman Gwyneth Paltrow Brad Pitt I mean it Henry Winkler yes on and had such a wonderful style of interviewing like yeah would get out of the way of the interview and you know that really allows the person you're being that you're interviewing to you know sort of occupy the space which ultimately is why you showed up it's so true and it was in front of a live audience of student actors on the show still on by the way just with other house besides James Lipton he retired in twenty eighteen after twenty two seasons he started the show in nineteen ninety four some of the students would get to ask questions from time to time and I think when I think that was what was so unique about the concept of what continues is that these interviewers are coming at it from a perspective of what can the what kind of gems of knowledge or advice can you give to the students right so then you have just you're coming from such a pure place when that's where that's the place that you're coming from to ask the question also puts the those celebrity in a place where they are thinking about their answers differently yes right so they open up in a way but it but they know it's to serve somebody else for sure he said to TMZ when asked has anybody ever turn and you down to be on inside the actors studio and now well everybody would do I think that is that is the interview you do because that's not gonna end up looking like a a double last not going to end up you know yeah blubbering like you do with yeah raft it's

Diversity at the Oscars: The 2020 Race Isn’t Looking Any Better Than Last Time

"I feel like hell for the law and Michael to Michael for lying and get contraction I saw this French film of course later on so I was very excellent and might just make it to be honest it would not Maxis the prices for me you know at the very beginning of awards season three kicks off with three phone fast fan is Toronto in telluride at the end of the summer the beginning the full and then bounced off you start hearing people's reaction and this is the red slacks a waiting van and you're looking at pictures saying well they're all satin and a prominent films with African Americans the soon so would directed by women I didn't know if they were going to cross over the queue for that group of voters in a few years ago actually when when a post all the adults because so white we could get at round tables with the active the directors the writers and when we were putting together the actress round table there were absolutely no women of color who seems like they would even like to to get nominated and I remember and and we got pretty massively criticized rightly I take the blame for this to have an all white women's round table and and we changed direction after that but it was evident that the industry walking creating those films and I think it's easy to say if the cat in the for XP industry see both you and you have to tackle things in multiple directions I think the academy's has done a great deal to do that what we have is talking about this the other things the academy dot for instance mentorship program financing for education there are multiple patrols here that lead to this problem and she also looking at the ferry downstream and the cat in the wrong but you call take in isolation April Stephen has a great point we tend to look at the academy not that the academy shouldn't be accountable they should they're sort of the tip of the iceberg in many many ways what's your view of the academy that you focus so much attention on verses the industry I absolutely agree with Steve and that it's not just the economy it's not just the golden globes is not just a Baptist we need to go all the way back to the very beginning to the screenwriter stage and figure out again whose stories are being told and who is telling those stories when someone is sitting down with a blank page and findings front of them hoping that they have written about to write the next best picture you know what is the protagonist look like is it a tall leggy blonde from the Midwest because if so by the time we get the casting months the maybe years later then the only person you're thinking about is Scarlett Johannson or Jennifer Lawrence but then one has to ask what is their hair color have to do with how well they perform in that film right because that means then then Daya and Gina Rodriguez and other people won't even get an opportunity to audition just because of what's that in the mind set I absolutely agree that the economy is the very end of the line so we really need to start back at the beginning and find out what opportunities are being given to traditionally under represented communities not just with respect to race but also sexual orientation gender identity disability to get those films made from the very beginning and at the same time April you have written about the types of roles that black actors and actresses do get nominated for once they are cast once they are in that pipeline you wrote a piece in variety you talk about how the only black woman to be nominated for Best Actress was Cynthia Revo who plays Harriet Tubman in the film Harriet similarly Lupita nyong'o won an Oscar for her role in twelve years a slave but this year she was overlooked for the to care after she played in Jordan peels hit movie us talk about what you see is the pattern for how black actors and actresses get promoted and celebrated when they are in films it's a real problem and I think that Stephen touched on this a bit you know that that in their minds that even when they were sending up those round tables they didn't think that those you know particular performances were even going to cross over for women of color and so they were included in the panel and one must ask what kind of troops palatable to the economy to voters to film critics because the vast majority of winners especially for women of color and black women in film have all come from a place where the characters are experiencing significant trauma so inflamed women women living in abject poverty even Whoopi Goldberg who played the cookie skit side kick in ghosts and when the best supporting actress you know they were there were questions about whether she had mental health issues right the only black woman who's ever won for Best Actress is Halle berry in monster's ball and clearly she with the troubled character and so one has to say well are there only thing is that the economy fees you know that only a slave narrative that is palatable to again a majority white male voter membership and that's the movies that we see time and time again you know why is it that my pain the pain of my ancestors is entertaining for you that that is what you will award but when someone like Peter in young girl has to fully fleshed out characters in us she is snubbed for that role because we actually the very first of may off to be on the actress roundtable if you will be pizza it was a wonderful performance so it isn't shown true of actresses of color you know for the rack access to the email you'll you'll you'll call the mansion on college and terrific performance by Adam Sandler but is deceived official in the movie Sean movies don't tend to do well they lost to until movie was was one of the very few exceptions and this applies just as much to active in that applies just as much the film that win the Oscar for Best Picture DOT flight in the whole history of the office you call he had any comment is that where you thought I called think of a single is shown a picture of that as well on the other hand Schindler's list winter so this isn't shocked a criterion for the place to women of color let's talk about some more films that could have been nominated that didn't get nominated we've already mentioned Stephen you mentioned hustlers one of many movies with a cast of mostly women directed by a woman they got zero nominations this year fair fail to to cross over is you say let's get people to hang on I want to I want to give people a little bit of a listen to hustlers here we go Wall Street guys it's in this country stole from everybody working people lost everything one of these things back to jail the game is rigged and it does not reward people who play by the rules like robbing a bank except get the keys hunter Harrison vulture some people have suggested that Jennifer Lopez campaigning for the nomination too much might have played into her not getting an Oscar nomination for her role in hustlers what what are your thoughts on this film and on the reason why J. lo was overlooked I mean how search has a very special place in my heart because it is based on and your magazine story but outside of that I just enjoyed it I think it has a lot of momentum it's a lot of fine and I mean my favorite teen hustlers as winter for Lawrence's teaching Constance Wu how to strip essentially and it's just such a loving scene between two women who were just you know being friends with one another but at the same time I think the thing with jail is that I think when you're voting for and someone when an Oscar part of the sort of metric is that you have to know that how much they wanted and away and that they need it and with Jello she's already like an icon she is such a form I mean we also heard the Superbowl last week and so I think it actually might have been the opposite that maybe she did and maybe that there's been that shouldn't wanted I'm not for need it to be to sort of solidify her status in Hollywood or or in the world really but it I was really surprised by Jill rocketing nomination because she had gotten a lot of the precursors and her biggest competition is obviously Laura Dern who is the favorite to win for playing a lawyer in marriage story but for a lot of the season especially after hosters career in Toronto they were pretty head like neck and neck but I think the jail thing is that did that character of like a mama bear stripper was not really you know super palatable to a lot of people she dealt drugs and you know sort of engaged or Shoup's worked as sort of a pen been engaged in sex work but at the same time like that's not really a role that we see women especially winning Oscars for I think I wanna push back in Stevens point earlier that that you know the problem about the roles women when the colors spit specifically play in movies is that extends to everyone I don't really think that's true anything Custer's is in some ways an example of that that this was sort of a prickly story about women who are doing bad things and getting caught doing them and that's just not a movie that people see as an Oscar movie I think that's everyone's detriment what we got this voice mail from a listener sharing his opinion about the role that race and gender should or shouldn't play when it comes to Oscar nominations we got several responses along this theme listen IBM injury Oscar is I don't mind or don't care who the with gender of the person is or what color the person is I care about quality in the movie that's being produced I don't care what color they are what gender they are I don't think it matters Linda tweeted this is it just possible that there were no good movies made by people of color or women this year when will the best just be the best without conditions attached Stephen you go first and then April what's your response okay I just briefly want to respond to sing about Jennifer Lopez I we saw she did get nominated the best supporting actress before it could be a thirty two fax one is that movie is very unsentimental about her role and it had a different ending in the retention people would have like that for the cliche narrative the very strength of the film is resistant to that meeting as you said less palatable the second thing is when conformist so let you see the acting when he seems so real that you think this is just what they like the performances of look she made it so real the people football if you'd just what she's like it's one of the reasons Tom Hanks has been so rarely nominate a you got nominated this year but not for many many years he makes it look so easy well certainly we're seeing the film let's let's put J.

"Okay. I've missed John wick one and John wick house, John wick three bay about the same. So John whikiss counter Reeves. Halle Berry is in this Laurence. Fishburne all-star cast, and they've been in some of the other released in some of the other ones. So here's the deal. So John wick is a super assassin K, and there is a think of it as the assassins. Union other unionized their guild, if you will. Well, he, he violates the code if you will. So they put a hit out on his head. So this movie is two hours and ten minutes. Hold on a bad thing. Okay. Of John wick, killing people in every conceivable way you can think of. Wow. Actually, one of the jokes is out. There is like that people were trying to keep track of the body count. And they can't. This will be is bloody. Exactly. The story. There's a hit on his head. He has to try to find redemption. This people are now going for the story, I can acknowledge that, you know, know, if you haven't seen one in two you might be a little Austin this. There's a lot of call backs to the previous movies is maybe why things happen and number three basically picks up at the last scene of, of number two, basically. So go back and see to at least two and three but for the type of people that want to go see enjoy John wick one enjoyed John week, to like that kind of action like that kind of death and destruction. John MC three is, is it on steroids on the on the one to five scale I gave John Waco four. Wow. Okay. It's for this is exactly what people expect the care less about

"Yes. You love boomerang, which is actually taping. The remake is taped wave bring it back in Halle Berry signed on boomerang for this love person right here. Boomerang was like the beginning of my personal rules like commandments of my heart. Like, remember, you how we all know the movie how highly varies character was like she fell for the player type and whatever. And then he didn't treat her kept sheeting mock. Kept cheating on her as she was like, you know, what you won't do like she was like next like, you know, what is what is are. They say, thank you. And she did that even though like she didn't think he could be hers, then he was hers, and then he didn't treat her right? And she stood up for herself. And she was like, Nope. And then when he got his shit together and came back in brought the kids remember, the art students and everything she's still like it took her a minute because she was standing up for own values in her heart. So, you know, we all we don't always get it. Right. And I was really young when it came out. But in my mind, I was like I'm always be like Halle Berry was like five. I clear memories of going to this. When we come out like ninety one. School babe. I had no business watching boomerang. So this means I probably watched it on syndication on TV. You probably watching a VHS 'cause I don't think In the. I would. Lotina brought you home with jam though. But when she said that and she used up for herself and the kind of relationship she knew she deserved. I always get it. Right. But I would literally have conversations myself in college like in my mind behind berry, do better do better, tell him to get the and that you don't need his shit, you keep your standards in that. I always think about that scene. Like, she was like, Nope. Nope. No. You know, what I mean, regretted it? I wish I was at like the Halle Berry in my love life. I know. I kind of left some do. Right. I don't. Where we're from will be reciprocate not like in the movie. She's but it was definitely like that. That example of a black woman onscreen like hell, no, which you won't do is disrespect me. I don't care what we had you want that girl by another thing about blue meringue brianna, author told me Bouma rain really showed her what it meant to be a black professional woman. Yes. Really encourage her because all of those women were they all had big dogs. These were boss women back in the day. So she said that really came an inspiration for her the kind of job in the kind of atmosphere. She wanted to be at work. So an environment of all black created a lot for this really beautiful creatives. Make a lot of money from being a creative. Not all of us have to be doctors, and nurses. I mean, no, no shade. Please Geller saving tweet. You're doing. You do feel that was growing up to be a doctor. I have to be a lawyer or have to be a brain surgeon or whatever. Yeah. Kickstart Your Memory with the Jennifer Aniston Neuron

"Com slash curiosity and use coupon code curiosity. We're going to wrap up with some compelling memory research, and it's all based on something called. The Jennifer Aniston, you're on it shows how easily our brains drawn new connections, and you can use it to kick. Start your memory, except now, I'm just kind of sat never got into friends. I never did either. Let's play name the friends characters name more. I've got Rachel and Phoebe. Is there a Carl? Now, wait any Zander. It's new Sander of Ross, Joey, yes. Nice thing. Ding, ding. This has been the most fun game show. We've ever played in this podcast. Well, don't worry. This science requires. No prior knowledge of the TV show friends, except knowing the Jennifer Aniston wasn't it in this whole thing comes from an accidental discovery in two thousand five a team of epilepsy. Researchers were trying to find the police in the brain were epileptic seizures originate this started to notice a strange pattern in one of their participants. Every time she saw a picture of Jennifer Aniston, a particular neuron would fire in her brain the trend showing her the words, Jennifer Aniston, and again that same neurons would fire the tried bringing up Jennifer Aniston in other ways, and every time it shot off the conclusion was inescapable for this particular individual. Anyway, there was a specific neuron tied to the concept of Jennifer Aniston. Other participants in the study had their own unique triggers for particular neurons. In one they found a particular neuron associated with Bill Clinton and in another they found one for Halle Berry and the subject's brain would react as if they recognize the person, even if the person was unrecognizable in the image. So for example, the Halle Berry part of the brain might fire off if the subject saw her in her cat woman costume as long as they knew beforehand that the actress had been unfortunate enough to win that role. This actually tells us a lot about how our brains work though, as we learn to recognize people places and things our networks of neurons. Start to store that data by developing particular patterns of activity, and it's surprisingly easy to manipulate that pattern, for example. Sometimes Jennifer Aniston neurons would light up when they saw Lisa Kudrow that implied that part of the job. The neuron was doing was making a sociation. Lisa cujo, made her think of Phoebe from friends which made her think of Rachel from friends, which made her think of Jennifer Aniston who played Rachel the biggest takeaway from this is that making us association between two concepts could be one of the most. Effective ways to kick. Start your memory, the one that comes to my mind is always thinking of a person, you already know when you meet someone new who has the same name that is my number one tried into trick for memory names. See what other associations, you can make and see how much you can

"Want to kind of discuss John wick three. This is Joey when it first came out was a huge surprise everybody on how awesome canneries was in an action movie with killing a bunch of dudes. Now, don't get major cool. But this is more this actually one of these movies that they said the actually change the action. John. Rowe the entire action on how action things are shocked. No, more crazy. You know, slow motion bullets. It's all real live. And he didn't doesn't he doesn't himself. If you Google Keanu Reeves three gun or gun shooting range. He is amazing zeal and he's like. And I I I never liked him as an actor till John wick the desert, see more. He was born several other stuff. He did as a person. Damn Yuki honorees, you're making me like, you know, how dare given his seat up to somebody. Letter three the guy the other Bill and Ted the other guy who Preston Brenston Bill or something he's going to be done with three playing the manual shoveling. No, just kidding. That that'd be great crazy doing the guitar. Yeah. So this is going to be more of a speculation thing. We don't it's still out there. We know who that cast the we definitely know who they cast his back and the hotel. Yeah. The hotel manager maybe at well. I think is the manager. Okay. Hotel hotel, which I I watched told the other night. Yeah. Really wish they actually would make because I I heard streaming that they might make hotel continental show about about body about fanciest chain of those hotels internationally there. Forgive me for him in though. So yeah, but Lawrence fish worms come back. Right. All his character is posing gonna clash heavily with English as because lords Fishburn, the leader of the. Yeah. That was. Yeah. So you got two other big names with Halle Berry. Yes, she's Safiya fasten. We'd be rose potentially rose was she was in jumping to what she did. She was she was one of the main people are right. The thing is like at the end. He I think either shoots our stature. And then he says hold this here, and then he leaves? So we didn't see her by so. Yeah. Well, I wouldn't she wouldn't be top billing was the way. Yeah. But I at the end the also saw where they told him. Hey, you know, we got to come after you. Yeah. Go ahead start. What is it? I looked it up Zeevis pessimism barrow bellum. I guess that's a that's the para bellum is the dumb with three pair of idle subtitles subtitle, and he was excommunicated resigned. So he he screwed up and he killed so many on hotel continental at the let me rephrase spoilers. But you know, if Yeah. I'm. Even one or two people in this movie and two, but yeah. So he p kill. He kills guy in the hotel continental which is rule number one. No, no. It's a big. No, no. So you get you get banned from your assassin club on you because. Yeah. Be safe ground. Yeah. So yeah. So John week three, man. It's going to be apparently he's on a horse that was that was on that Trump is scape. The city, and I guess that was one. There. It is. Yeah. Who's feed is dog? Will he's leaving big pit bull compete himself. Now just goes out and killed scores. Like, wasn't you? Don't wanna do is mess with John wicks is -actly. Oh, you know, the first one was a beagle. Sick was a pit bull. So yeah. Yeah. There was going to be like a miniature horse one isn't a big horse. So yeah, I think I it's going to be one of those movies where you you just got to go watch theaters. But yeah, it's it's it's gonna it's gonna be crazy. I can't wait until it is especially I lords Fishburn and Andy mcshea any machine. I mean, if you're like you oughta Reeves's xactly picture by being. It's the fourth matrix Laurence, Fishburne and canneries. They're they're going to be consuming. It out. Ooh. Ooh. Thank you did see that tied tied it altogether. Matrix, the fourth meet, well, you know, matrix revolutions what I'm saying here joke. Houston's going to be in this also as the director member of the hi this is this is you'll be one of the high ups. I hope this is going to be like the JAMES BOND series. I could I could get behind that get behind that in like five years, John wick is actually in five years. They replace it with with another personal. Yeah. I could see him going following another assassin. I hear here's thing. I think what they're going to do. They're going to do the board series. It's going to it's. Joan week. That was the worst born ever. I like Jerry come on man on Hawkeye. Yeah. Oh, yeah. People heroes, but hey, comma, down below because what do you guys think about John week three coming up? I think I can't wait that that is one of the movies. I'll just go ahead and pay for out of pocket. I don't have movie pass anymore. Screw you movie that by it'll Blu Ray watch marathon. Yeah. The draft house should do a marathon for John wiggled comes out. Yeah. All fact. Makes you wanna frigging kill somebody. I just wanna shoot something. Cool. John wake say it ends. Starting the Dixon starts. It's not a time. Oh, Exactly. exactly. Right. Yeah. Yeah. In just just cut with the credits. In the movie. Yeah. Yeah. Don't even show the credits GIS credits in just just go to. Yeah. It's a nine hour movie. I would watch that to cloth bags other went to get up missing. "Tobey Maguire is also also extra more also ACTA more if they have a very hard time putting on weight poor poor them, and they have a fast matab we don't need to talk about them anymore. Okay. Moving on the advice for somebody who would be in this super skinny category would be to eat before you go to bed because then when you go to bed, you know your muscles catava is and like poor, you moving, maybe I'm just an extra Moore who solved my problem. One into more spotty shirt. It's like a very specific type of Joe seem to put up by way. Dieticians job, you're going to send to your colleagues do more for life. Okay. Okay. Zooming out. Zooming out doing out. Zooming out. Okay. Scar Joe would put on weight if she were in a celebrity. True. I hear that. Like if she ate like she was in constant on camera, she probably would not be a small. Yes. Again, I'm not really any who's the other example, Halle Berry. I can't pick to her in. "So actually, I saw Halle Berry at that party and we our eyes met and we didn't. I don't go over to people have stars because I, that's not true. I've seen. So you go to Cowburn at about legends woke will join us. Someone I've known for, you know. That's true. Yeah, you have known, but I've seen over to people that you love admire or really wanna meet, but you don't do it. Normally I won't because I don't send them to throw shade and be nasty most most stars that I've appro. I like most of them have been shady and I know it's hard for you guys out there to believe. 'cause you have your fantasy about who stars are and what they're like, but they are real. They're real people, wail mood with real moons and most most them are are shading or like what others you can see it. You can see who's like that. So I don't do. But I did see how berry at that party and our eyes met, but we didn't go and say, hi to each other last year, the Emmys. This is gonna be a mouthful. But last year, the big girl Emmys a hundred grownup image EMMY Rossum. I know a lot of Emmy's following a hummy Rossum sat right in front of us. Yeah, I love shameless. That's not the point. But anyway, we were there and she. She halfway through it was much longer last year. She pulls out a kind bar, you know, like the little granola, but the healthy ones and I stuck and I don't know if you were there or not there, and I said, ooh, that's a good idea. Like, I don't know. Her never met her. She turned around like who the fuck is that like getting my business, I was like you, that's a good idea. And she lives at the barn was like. Do you want like she didn't know what to make me the stranger. She didn't know who I was, and it was a weird moment of. Are you how you gonna handle this right now? I don't give a shit. I got nothing to lose year the star how you gonna act and she was actually nice about it. But in the beginning you could go ancient, you take a tips and eating I was wearing. I was wearing velvet. I was half dead, but it was really sweet of, you know, the reaction because it could have gone all wrong. But there's those moments where you see those celebs in your, like when you seem in real life, they're unapproachable because of that. Well, I, I always say it's safer to not to keep the fantasy alive and to not go over. I agree, you know. So you know, well, the Emmys. Well, what's your recap that was your recap, Michelle, I guess maybe we'll go next year. Maybe this is the end of the run, who knows? But you know, again, I didn't get into businesses, natch trophies. I was never never thought the status quo or the stablishment would accept me in this business. And I, I realized I did. We need the establishment to accept me in this business outs going to do this one way or the other anti-establishment all you know. But the fact that they are recognizing our little show who's been on the air for ten years and you know, showering us with with trophies is really brilliant. I'm very thankful an silt thrilled that all of the producers and writers and all the people worked on this for some of them over ten, you know, ten years on the show have been recognizing. So it's really a long sweet journey did a bias a couple more years vice. It will see I until the next awards shoes. Can I get. Love yourself hand the hand on allow somebody else. Can I get a name and don't forget to subscribe on IT. Can't love yourself. Pound the hell. You're gonna love somebody else..

"You'll shoot nobody over no tag on Halle Berry argument. That's crazy. Well made. It's a wreath of Franklin argument. I feel like at some point, I don't know who was the shooter, what position they were on. But as soon that you don't get very mad about Halle Berry, but you get mad about suggesting that Howdy bear can play Aretha Franklin right on because Halle Berry played the Dandridge in introducing Dorothy dangerous for the HBO movie. So maybe she has a little bit of sinking talent, put it on the poll. Have you seen Halle, Berry played, Dorothy Dandridge. Nobody to seen that movie. Why it I saw bits and pieces. FOX of you see on the credits? I, I haven't seen it. That's not where I mean, if you bring Halle Berry, that's not what jumps to mind for me. I've never seen it. So I'm sorry. So what jumps to mind FOX. I mean, I, it's very careful. I got to tread lightly because it might come across as creepy. The first movie that jumps to mind for me for Holly berry. Okay. So we'll avoid that. I, it comes to mind for me is David Justice, former Braves, outfielder. Yeah. That's a good that's a while. It's a bad bad story, but it's a good reference since school angle FOX. Also domestic violence angle, unfortunately. Yeah, ugly sore. Whilst having cable trending on Twitter donate. I think it's a wreath related. Also. I've been trying to get to the bottom of this, but I think that Tevin Campbell trending. And anytime you see celebrity trending, your immediate thought is still alive and it appears Tevin Campbell is still alive, but it's been suggested maybe that he's going to sing at a wreath funeral, and some people are called by this and more more people seem to be on protect inside because heaven voice, he could say, Tevin. Campbell was the first dude that as like a young man made me feel extremely insecure about myself. Tim Campbell shows up in the place. I'm hooked. This would I gotta do to get to get a day. I'm like, this brother can sing. He. He appears to be respectful and nice. He's clean. Got nothing on this dude. She's clean. I like that be clean as a hurdle. You remember what he's saying the Ashley on. I rinse for birthday. I think that's win off felt the insecurity the most. So you are actually fan. You saw tavist show up. He was like, no, can't do it. I wonder what's Kim, but looks like these days. You think he's still got it. Yeah, type of campaign let himself go. I don't know. Don't have ever candle Tevin. Campbell has been keeping up his appearances waiting for his moment, and this might be his moment. He if he kills it at a bad word, if he blows us out of the water at Aretha sooner. I think Kevin thinks he's got another album coming up. What is Tevin Campbell's best song? I think it's can we talk? Yeah. I mean, that's classic. That's not even a question. Okay. I mean, what will be the runner up? I don't know name. I can't remember right now at seven king. We. Got a great voice. I need to scrap this radio business. I'm really out Rita situation. I don't think that people understand how vicious Retha was. Let me make a side point here. Aretha Franklin is the American. That many folks of other cultures and other countries said, she's the best thing in the world. Cheesy America. You go overseas people know Rita. She was American music to a whole lot of folks, plain and simple, and that easy to do specify when you're solo artist. I mean, it's slow solo, female, black artists like it was during a time where well, it was a tough time for Retha then, and I think she was for Mendes and I've learned more about her musical ability because.

"Jennifer Hudson is playing Aretha Franklin and a bio pic about her. Life Jennifer Hudson, is you, know one and Oscar and a Golden Globe and a sag award for her role in. Dreamgirls she won those awards for best supporting, actress and that was her first role was playing EFI white in. Dreamgirls and so at the time you know that they would be deciding about an Aretha Franklin. Bio-pic they knew that she had the chops to be able to act it and to sing. It so it seems like a very logical. Choice I loved. It Aretha Franklin was, like I want somebody who will play the. Role don't bother me if you think you're this person would be good at. It if you don't have the confidence to play the, role then why are you gonna play me because I had. Confidence, next I love that is a level of that is like, the Of diva somebody who's you, know she understands what she you know that not only does she understand her own greatness she. Understands the greatness, required of a person that is going to deign to play her on this.
