He all spent time in baltimore. Of course pelosi connection plus and then northern california in and around oakland right right kelly and then of course with death row records In southern california so he brings a lot of things together. I do very political in his early career. That is correct You know one of my favorite to pop songs. <hes> is <hes> against lots in He He has a phrase in that where he talking about some things that related to when he was in a tough spot in new york And he would he would use the phrase. The realist ish. I have a wrote and I've just thought about that phraseology. A lot during the trump years because we've been compelled to engage in real talk because the stakes have been so high and we can't sugar coat. The situation that we confront to park never did And <hes> and against all lines. We were able to win back the house and now have this triangular alignment of values between the house. The senate and the presidency and and we'll continue to get things done for the people. Okay cards manhattan jeffrey. Thank you for being. Thank you for rechristening. "But i do believe that we're going to land in a very good place while you're here and of course the home district of of the boss. Nancy pelosi So give us give us a pelosi story that we we don't know about give us give us a insight to what it's like working with her that we don't that we don't know well and you you don't have to suck up all too much. You just give me give me something really well just simply say this. I think that We all we know that she's smart as a whip And we'll go down in history as one of the most legendary legislative leaders ever She's tough and she's fair at the same time. How does she keep people to get the the the the caucus together. I mean there's rarely defection. There's got some trouble with this tax bill but there's a rarely defects. What does she do to she. She's not a yeller she's a she's she come out like her daughter i said was. She's kind of like an italian grandma. Sometimes you know kind of guilting you in the store what would is. What is her superpower there. Well i i would say One was clear to me is that she loves the caucus. She loves the congress the constitution and the country. That is clear in everything that she does. I hadn't heard the italian grandmother analogy But that makes a lot of sense to me in. Italian grandma is very loving but also if you cross the line. There could be some challenges. Yes as as someone who has had a couple of time. Grandma's i feel that would it be learned from her personally. What would have you watched her up. Close she's obviously. She's a huge fan of yours. I remember sitting various to'real board where she was talking you up several years ago. What have you learned from her. Well it's been amazing opportunity To be able to work closely with her to learn from her And to watch how she leads during a very difficult time she was really built for this moment and was the tip of the spear in leading us out of the trump era winning the house governing pushing back against donald trump and his excesses and ultimately holding the house and helping to make sure we won the senate and the presidency. The thing that i've learned from her. I think that is most impressive. Is she respects. All aspects of the broad coalition of house democrats progressives and she represents a very progressive district here in san francisco. As i do beck at home. The people's republic. "That's what the former president said and it appears that so many republicans continue to adopt that philosophy and the people of california rejected that lie and that level of responsibility in the recall election. Not trump is not going to be on the ballot and twenty twenty two. How'd you get there's been a concern about. How do you get the dick. Latino voters young voters under thirty thirty five how do you get them. Engage without trump on the ballot trump. At the top of the ticket would. Would you do to get to turn out those voters who are very key in these house. Races in california especially in swing districts. We'll trump is not on the ballot but trump ism remains on the ballot and in the aftermath of the violent insurrection. You would have thought that reasonable. Republicans would have run toward democracy as opposed to running away from democracy But instead of embracing the fact that the heart and soul of america is the notion of self government. One person one vote and that what we saw on january six was wildly unacceptable and can never happen again and instead they continue to perpetrate the big lie that donald trump actually won the election and that joe biden is not a legitimate president and so it continued to worship at the altar of the cult of personality that is donald trump so i think trump is will be on the ballot for many voters but most importantly democrats are acting decisively to cut taxes for working families and for middle class families to lower costs including in healthcare and child care for everyday americans and to create millions of good paying jobs. That's what the build back better act is all about and as speaker pelosi recently indicated our top priority as we go back to washington will be to make sure that we get the bipartisan infrastructure agreement.

"That will be focused on what they are terming. The she session of course not a recession in many ways but she session That has continued to exist up because of the fact that women. Disproportionately out of the workforce as you point out and unable to return to the workforce and so when we talk about the american jobs plan in the investment in physical infrastructure. That's important Bridges rose tunnels airports mass transit system crumbling but in physical infrastructure as you the overwhelming majority of the jobs when you're talking about fixing bridges rose tunnels things of that. Nature are male dominated jobs and so just investing in physical infrastructure will actually exacerbated divide. The gender divided ready exists as why president biden has included in his american jobs plan proposal. Four hundred billion dollars for what we phrases to carrying economy investing in home care investing in childcare investing in are essential workers not just essential during a pandemic. there are essential every day of the week and we need to make that clear. Not just talking the talk but walking the walk in terms of how women are compensated and then in these traditionally male dominated industries. We also wanna look for opportunities for greater expansion and reducing the level of male dumb. I love that. I think that's really important for us to have a plan for the future but also making sure that we're showing up for women right now. Who are struggling right now because of the pandemic well we have to make sure that we get the american jobs plan over the finish line and the house. I'm confident that we've got the capacity to come together and get it done of the senate is the senate is the senate will but you know the senate needs to make sure that they can get their act together in the same way that they did connected to the american rescue plan and that was critical of but we also make sure you get the american jobs plan over the finish line and subsequent to that the american families plant which will be another level of investment in our american families with an emphasis on child. Can't things of that nature. i'd also point out of that starting next month. As a result of the american rescue plan the enhanced refundable child tax credit will start to be paid out and because of the enhanced child tax credit which was pushed by a chairwoman rose with the loro and several other prominent members of the house democratic caucus in women leaders in congress. We believe that we will cut childhood poverty in half in the united states of america..

One have got great respect for the social work profession as you indicated it is incredibly challenging. I think for in the jeffries household you know. We value the family time that were able to spend together with our two now teenage boys of but certainly that journey with them has been an amazing one. Pre pandemic We all look forward to spending time on saturday or sunday afternoon. Going to the movies that obviously was put on the shelf temporarily during the pandemic in hopefully will be able to reemerge in practice. That family tradition but the living room became the movie theater in many ways in certainly during the initial days of the pandemic and spending that time together i think has been a blessing a lot of american families absolutely so i am the mom of a teenage boy. He just turned fifteen last month and a preteen will become a teenager at the end of this year. So i empathize with the journey of parenthood. And you know raising a teen slasher preteens so usage our at home during the lockdown. How was that like. How was it being at home. You your wife and two teenage boys Where you really couldn't go anywhere else or you know. We live in a new york style apartment and so we didn't know the prospect park is our outdoor space. Generally there is no backyard and we also had to make adjustments in terms of moving from being physically president either in school as it relates to two boys or at work as released myself and my wife. During the early first few months dependency we probably had more family dinners sitting down around the dinner table eating and having conversation with each other in that period of time then in the prior you know sixteen to eighteen years of their life. I think Because it was every day every night every night every night every weekend. And i think that was a wonderful thing because people's schedules will all synchronized for the first time and i think we've emerged Closer as a family as a result. I can definitely agree with that. I definitely spend a lot more time with my children. had conversations with them that i just never really had time to sit down in half with them. But now you're sitting at the table you're looking at each other you like. So how was your day and you start to get into things and then there was so much happening in the world at the same time that we had an opportunity to actually talk about those things in process what was going on around them as well. So i definitely cherish those moments I know that The pandemic brought a lot of devastation. But if there was one silver lining is definitely the amount of family time that came out of that experience..

"Going along with the agenda. Democrats had a good election at the presidential level, but everything else was a bit of a disappointment, and I think it's really left a lot of folks in the Democratic Party wondering. Is it time for a change in leadership in Congress that right now the Democrats have really failed. I think have a very adequate pipeline for those who are younger and in their ranks and who might be moving up to be the rising stars of the party in the future. They just haven't had an opportunity to do so because the very same people who have been running the Democratic Party have been doing so for a very long time. And so to the extent that we wind up in a situation Where they're still gridlock where progressives feel like, Hey, we have AH, lot more control in Washington. We used to when we still can't get things done that is going to place enormous pressure on Nancy Pelosi. She's she's held control for a really long time. I don't expect that she'll face a challenge that significant or speakership, but she's gonna have to do a lot more. I think to try to create a sense that she is allowing younger Democrats to have a seat at the table in the leadership of the party. Let's get on it away in on that expectations are high, particularly among progressives. How to Speaker Pelosi balance these competing interest on it. She has shown incredible leadership and bringing everyone into the room so that everybody has a seat at the table. Look, we have Hakeem Jeffries. We have, you know, elicits lock and we have so many young Democrats who are Basically at the table, helping to lead this great party. We don't throw people away or telling the city going the back of the room simply because of the age. She loves and value the experience that every Democrat bring to the caucus, and she's going to continue to lead the Democratic Party in the house. And I think she's gonna be an incredible force, along with President elect Joe Biden and vice president Comma Harris and moving the country forward in 2021 beyond Jason. It may not be an easy job for Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who may be looking over his shoulder wondering whether Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez may give him a primary challenge in two years. That's right. Nancy Pelosi, the on I'll Say this, and I get a lot of heat from my conservative brother. And when I do say this, but I'm gonna stick with it. I know you can't change my mind on this one. You really cannot change my mind. She is the very best. She's the goat cheese, the greatest speaker of all time, man that hurts to hear that it hurts to say, But there's one job. The speaker of the house and that is to wrangle votes passed legislation for your party. There has been no one that could hold a candle to Nancy Pelosi, and I have probably one of the biggest Nama say is this is the biggest piece of evidence there. In a election that saw them lose What? Nine seats in the house. They were supposed to gain. 15. There were said the Democrats were supposed to gain 15. They lost. They got crushed. Her speakership was toast. There's no way they're gonna follow her. She's running again. Son opposed. That is the biggest example. I can tell you she is the best at her job description is what she needs to do her constituents air so misery her colleagues. They're so afraid of her. And we'll do her bidding. Always even after a crush like that they re elect her as speaker of the House. Nancy do what Nancy does. Nancy is very good at wrangling votes, so she apparently wrangled enough votes. You say? Do not dare challenge me. You will be the next one out. I will crush you like I'm going to crush the coronavirus that it is completely threatening. There was no happy conversations. It's a knock on the door and say Oh, won't matter. Speak, right? I didn't know you're coming about great. Are you voting for me for speaker of the house? I was going to give it some thought. Do you want to win re election? Yes. Then you are you voting for me for speaker of the house? Yes, good, and she leaves onto the next one up and does that over 100 Times called up Hakeem Jeffries, whose people were mentioned in the guy from New York Democrat from New York, Okay? He made sure that Hakeem Jeffries publicly went out in front of the cameras and said that he is happy with his chairmanship of the chairman role that he has every a wish. Like many stairs, 15 charges. Some Democrats say I am very happy with the speakers performance as speaker of the House. Madam Speaker. I will not go. I will not run against her question. Is this white supremacy? Is this the way I asked this question? Hakeem Jeffries is a black man. Pretty well for himself As a legislator. He's got a pretty good name recognition. Not nearly the name recognition is Pelosi. But Pelosi is a white woman of elite status. Very, very rich worth about a quarter of a billion by last check. Somewhere in that neighborhood, the freezer just for ice cream. She has a $27,000 freezer filled with ice cream. So that's like my mortgage for two years. Nancy's fridges right is that so? That's why I asked that question because the left loves to accuse the Democrats love to accuse the other side of being a white supremacy party, right, built on this whole country is built on white supremacy. Well, Nancy Pelosi is a 100% of part of that. She's 80 years old. Hanging on a power just won another election. But here you have a nice, Ah young black man ready to assume some leadership. Roles in the Democrat Party. But Nancy Pelosi is in his way That's a rich white liberal woman. By the way, the most systematically racist people in this country are woke white progressive liberals Chelsea handler. I'm talking to you, the comedian who told 50 Cent that he can't vote for Donald Trump because he's black, and she said she had to remind him. He's black. Yes. So she's telling. Black people what to do and what to think. That's insane. He did offer herself to him, so not worth it. Not worth it. He's already been there anyways. Man used to date He's like Been there done that. Moving on? Yeah, exactly. But we should move on to forgive herself more. Yes, exactly. How about how about this? Yeah. I don't know if you wanted this as the happy ending, because I got a happier ending than what you got here. I got some good stuff. We want to let you tell me what you pig. What's up, Rob Hunter is covered free. Rob hunters covered free. Ladies and gentlemen, if you if you did not notice we were broadcasting from our respected covert bunkers. Mind from the West Valley and robs from central Phoenix. And it was because you had come in contact with somebody covert policy. A friend of mine that I hung out with last Monday. We could go Monday told me Saturday. He tested positive. I was like, well, hung out with a Monday. I don't know when he got that. I don't know what the story is. Average is about. 4 to 6 days when you start to show symptoms sounds like that's in that window. So Saturday night when I found out I called Mike, what texted him because I had a text like nine people. Yes, right. By the way, he just won't let you know. So I can I sit in close proximity in the studio, right mask lists Massless. So the plan was okay. Anybody had come in contact with me had stayed home for a couple days just in case I started to show symptoms. So I wouldn't get tested Saturday night. Got the results last night Negative, took a second test on Monday got those results this morning to negative tests. I've been out of house in those since Saturday. Getting tests. A bunker down, hunkered down. That's a serious I'm taking this. Yes, in a lot of people are accusing Mike and myself of all our look, No, We're both taking this very seriously. Mike has kids. You think he wants to give his kids and illness of any kind? Come on. Now. He's such a good dad. He's gonna get his wife's sick is really good. Sister Sick is the sick, So he's taking it very seriously as have I So for those you're, Yeah. Maybe I don't believe that master the panacea of the be all end all but I've taken this very seriously. And I'm glad I don't have to covert right now and get my stayed home as well. When Rob got very tired of this question, Hey, to get tested, Paid protesters suspect Easy test results. Are you feeling okay? You have any symptoms? It is. It is no secret that I do not like broadcasting and working from home. So I wanted to be back in the studio is also serving wrong and that we have shooting events that we have this weekend that I was not going to you sounds important. That was not gonna miss out. It's too negative test. It wasn't is weird how you go through that mental kind of mental game where you're doing, stringing the yarn to how many people you've had contact with since then, and what we contact we need to talk, my kids. My kids were at a sleepover over the weekend. I'm like, Oh, my gosh, We have to tell their parents now we just at least have to warn them. They were, you know that I might have been exposed, so that's just it. It's weird When you look at it, you're like, dang it. Yep, It's a 99.4% survival rate. Libby. I and I knew that I have the ability to fight it. But I didn't want to get anybody else sick, And that's the part that that's the toughest part to go through is like what if I am sick? What have I spread? What if I'm a super spreader? It's horrible. It's okay. It all unbeknownst right, because when I hung out with our friend on Monday, he didn't have it. No, he didn't no symptoms. Then he had to go through what he had positive test. So here, they're going, Everybody all hands on deck kind of thing. It's an interesting deal when that happens..

"41 in the nation's capital G T. O P and 5 11. Congress does not have much time to reach an agreement on a new Corona virus relief package. What is any progress being made? Joining us live to talk more about that Wt LP, Capitol Hill correspondent Mitchell Miller eyes anything getting done Mitch up there on a new relief measure? Well, Brennan and Sean There is a lot of discussion of getting legislation done. That would provide another round of stimulus checks and more help for small businesses. But while the tone is pressing, it's often what we heard today from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has asked the Senate to accept several inadequate partisan proposals. Democrats have refused, refused to let us continue helping White House chief of staff. Mark Meadows was asked today where the negotiations are any basically said it's up to the House and Senate there had been talks as you know, between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. But those don't appear to be active, so it's just hard to see in this political environment. Our major coronavirus measure will come together. Mitch Democrats today cleared the way for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to once again lead their caucus. But I wonder are all Democrats on board with this. Well, for the most part they are. There are some noises from the left liberal side of the party that maybe they should start moving in a new direction. But Democrats today endorsed the same leadership that's been in place Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn as the House whip. Pelosi has a legacy is the most powerful woman in American politics, and she's held this Sometimes unwieldy political caucus together, But this will likely be her last term. She is 80 years old lawyer is 81. Clyburn is 80. The party has some younger voices, including Alexandria, Ocasio Cortez, who believe trying to push for those more liberal policies to get traction as Joe Biden comes into office. One person to keep an eye on is New York congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who will again be the caucus chair and was widely seen to be in line to become speaker at some point. If Democrats remain in power in the House. Now, Mitch most Republicans are still holding out on saying publicly at least that Joe Biden is the president elect. Do you think that will change? I don't think any time soon. South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of President Trump did today reiterate that he thinks by and should be getting intelligence briefings. But aside from a handful of Republicans most aren't saying anything. Some, including Graham gave some fist bumps to fellow Senator Kamala Harris when she was on the floor yesterday, but it looks like most will lead At the court cases play out, and they may not publicly acknowledge Biden as president until states certify their voting results, which could take weeks. So it's rather extraordinary. Since as you know, Biden has 306 electoral votes the same number President Trump one in 2016 when Donald Trump called it an electoral landslide. Alright, lots going on. Thanks, bitch. You bet. It's nobody T O p. Capitol Hill correspondent Ms Mitchell Miller Coming up. Next we'll get you cut up on sports. It's 5 14 CNBC Shepard.

"News. I'm Noelle King and I'm Steve Inskeep, the old saying holds, the vice president is a heartbeat away from the presidency. In this election cycle. Both presidential candidates are in their seventies and one just got out of the hospital with Corona virus that added some interest to last night's vice presidential debate in Salt Lake City. Mike Pence and Kamala Harris discussed the response to the Corona virus, the economy taxes, thie environment and the Supreme Court. Among other things. Here's how one voters saw Harris Comma. Harris was very professional shows very calm, despite his interruptions, despite his long winded answers, and not allowing the moderator to moderate Fatima Bury an immigrant from Sierra Leone, who lives in Maryland, says she can identify with Harris. People are very much connected with her. They see themselves in her, especially for those of us who had immigrant parents who taught us the values that She missed houses in reference to her mother, the fight to make it in this country. But Sharon News back of Stevensville, Maryland, had a different view. She's like Hillary Clinton. I guess I don't know, because you're not making faces, And I don't get that while she kept doing that you could making all these weird. Strange. I don't know. Maybe she didn't realize she was doing it. News back is an immigrant from Venezuela. She didn't trust Harris's answer, she said, particularly on race and protests, and she told us she cannot imagine herself voting for these Democratic candidates. Even if something happened. I'd probably look in any work is nowhere. I would build a Democrat for them Two because they're like socialists don't have specialists to of many views were hearing on last night's vice presidential debate. Let's hear now from a representative for the Biden Harriscampaign will be hearing from the Trump Pence campaign. Later in the show, representative Hakeem Jeffries chairs the House Democratic Caucus. Good morning, sir. Good morning. Last night was a more issues oriented debate than the first presidential debate. So we'll talk about the issues specific policy issues in just a SEC. Let me start by asking you whether you think Senator Harris made an air tight case that the death toll from Corona virus and the economic catastrophe this pandemic has caused are the fault of the Trump administration. Without question, Senator Harris made clear that the Trump administration's response to the Corona virus pandemic has been an unmitigated disaster. She laid out the statistics. Which illustrate the pain, suffering and death of the American people have experience which is extraordinary. More than 210,000. Americans dead over 100,000 small businesses permanently closed and the Trump administration at the moment has walked away from negotiations. And early on. Failed to reveal to the American people the severity of the illness, even though they knew it in late January. When asked what a Biden Harris administration would do to combat Covic, should they win, Senator Harris said. Contact tracing testing administering a vaccine. Vice president Pence points out. That's pretty much the Trump administration's strategy. Does he have a point there? There wasn't much new in that answer. No. The Trump administration and Donald Trump have failed to be able to even contain the virus at 1600, Pennsylvania Avenue. They're testing isn't even reliable. Including what is being administered to high level officials. Of the government. And so Senator Harris is exactly correct when she talks about testing, tracing treatment, social distancing protocols as well as the administration. That is Of the vaccine in a safe and effective fashion. Those are things that may sound basic. But Donald Trump and his administration have failed to execute upon what the public health professionals have indicated, would be necessary in order to permanently flat in the curve. That is why I think what she's basically saying is that the Biden administration led by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, or going to proceed in a competent And comprehensive fashion. We haven't gotten that from Donald Trump and his administration. At one point in the debate moderator Susan Page as Senator Harris if she would take a vaccine. Let's listen to her response if the public health professionals if Dr Douchey if the doctors Tell us that we should take it. I'll be the first in line to take it. Absolutely. But if Donald Trump tells us that we should take it, I'm not taking it. We know that many Americans are suspicious of a vaccine and that that may be a problem in the future. Was this statement a problem? If Donald Trump tells us to take it, I'm not taking it. It was not a problem because Donald Trump has told more than 20,000 lives during the course of his presidency. And it cannot be trusted at this particular point in time, Donald Trump said. There were 15 cases it would go down to zero. Donald Trump said that one day one day it would all disappear. Donald Trump also suggested to the American people that perhaps They consider injecting themselves with life soul. And so there's no reason to trust Donald Trump at this particular point in time, But Senator Harris was correct if the public health professionals Have made clear to the American people that the vaccine is safe and effective. We all should be taking it as part of the effort to crush the virus. Let's move on to some issues that we're not about the pandemic. Vice president Pence accused Joe Biden in Comma Harris of supporting the Green New Deal. Senator Harris denied this as Joe Biden has denied this, but there's actually a Biden Web page with this sentence..

No sign of end to standoff over Trump impeachment trial

"And now to the impeachment debate here in Washington the Senate Republican leader is accusing house speaker Nancy Pelosi and what he is calling shamelessly game playing those comments from senator McConnell came after the speaker again stated she does not plan to send articles of impeachment of the Senate until seeing proposed rules for trial a president trump the continuing standoff between the speaker and the Senate Republican leader focusing on the president's conduct toward Ukraine comes as the president addressed the nation on the hostilities with Iran a crisis that is now over shadowing the impeachment drama from the Senate floor Republican John Thune of South Dakota but as a very straightforward process one as I said that met with the approval of all one hundred senators both Democrats and Republicans back in nineteen ninety nine the Clinton president is seems to me at least to be a fair way in which to proceed and and won that Senate Republicans have agreed to move forward with soul if and when the house Democrats under speaker Pelosi determine that they are ready to send those articles over here seems like maybe they're waiting for something to rescue what I think is an otherwise fairly weak argument that they have to make but when those articles arrive here we will have a process in place in which to move forward and and and get this trial under way in the Senate and hopefully hear the arguments and at some point in I hope in the not too distant future I conclude this and get it behind us in on to the work that the American people I think sent his here to do obviously there is an election coming up in November the first of all we'll start being cast just a few weeks from now in the state of Iowa and New Hampshire and other states followed very closely on by super Tuesday so the election process is already under way and I think that is the means by which most Americans believe we ought to deal with our leadership and in a democratic system of government we have the opportunities people to express our opinions and the voice argues in that manner and I would hope that that is where we can settle these political differences industries that we have that from Republican John Thune of South Dakota on the Senate floor the hill newspaper reporting a democratic senators are quote growing impatient over the delayed start of the impeachment trial some saying it's time for speaker Pelosi to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate in fact this from democratic senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut telling The Washington Post yesterday quote I think the time is past we should send the articles over reacting to all of that the house democratic caucus chair Hakeem Jeffries of New York sorry say has no the resolution going to like what do you gain by waiting for one of our as speaker has consistently indicated it's very difficult for her to determine who would be appropriate impeachment managers to present the house's case in the absence of understanding the rules of engagement and what the contours of a trial would look like beyond of course chairmanship and chairman Nadler who one would think we're going to be logical choices and participants to lead the effort but what we have seen over the last several weeks all the additional disclosure of documents that continue to highlight that the president did abuse his power by targeting an American citizen for political gain while withholding intentionally three hundred and ninety one million dollars in military aid from a vulnerable Ukraine additional documents subsequent to the speaker's decision to hold the articles have come out that's a gain in terms of information to the American people and we've also seen during this period of time that a critically important potential witness John Bolton has said he will testify if subpoenaed John Bolton had direct communication with the president about this sordid matter and abuse of power and we know from testimony from doctor Fiona hill characterize this whole scheme as a drug deal and the president's main operative Rudolph Giuliani as a hand grenade that from democratic congressman who keen Jeffries part of the house democratic leadership in this note regarding the house California governor Gavin Newsom today saying that he will not call for a special election in the district held by resigning Republican congressman Duncan hunter saying that we received his letter of resignation based on the timing a special election will not be called Duncan hunter officially steps down next Monday after pleading guilty to charges of campaign finance

"House, Republican leadership holding their weekly news conference with reporters. You're listening to C-SPAN radio. Well at the same time in another area of the capital, a news conference is being held by the democratic caucus. We hear first from caucus chairman Hakeem Jeffries morning, everyone. Early at the day of the caucus meeting. At a very active discussion on the wide variety of issues, but we were particularly pleased that Dr Henry Louis gates. The prominent Harvard historian was with us to share clips from his new film on reconstruction and remind us of our long journey that we've been on in this country to make sure that we can bring the values of liberty and Justice for all and equal protection under the law to life. Introducing dock gates. I reminded everyone in the room that four hundred years ago this month. June of sixteen nineteen the first slave ship left, the west coast of Africa and arrived two months later. In Virginia, thus began a long journey of the African American presence here in the United States of America. Dr gates has catalogued it almost, unlike no one else from slavery to emancipation to reconstruction, reconstruction, Jim crow, Jim crow through the civil rights movements of rights movement through the years of President, Barack Obama, and now the moment that we're in, and it was an opportunity for us to reflect on why we do what we do as Democrats fighting for the people, particularly as it relates to HR one, and our democracy reform legislation, and the effort to make sure that every single American regardless of race regardless of gender, regardless of zip code, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity. Regardless of religion has an opportunity to participate. In our democracy, and we, of course, will continue to dedicate ourselves to that causes. We move forward in an era of voter suppression and in an era. Of some even those in power trying to turn back the clock as we continue to try to move America forward. Also at the meeting Jan Schakowsky Doris, Matsui and Connaught lamb. Announced the relaunch of our task force on aging that will focus on the well being of older Americans consistent with our for the people, the gender where we've promised to make sure that we reach out to every single community to get things done on their behalf. In the case of older Americans are promise to make sure that we will protect social security, and protect Medicare and protect their well being as someone the other side of the aisle endeavor to slash and burn the social safety net in a manner. That is highly irresponsible. We also announced and speaker Pelosi has emphasized are weekend of action on health care in the United States of America. We expect that there will be over a hundred different member lead events that will take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday of this weekend to emphasize what Democrats have been doing on the question of lowering healthcare costs. Protecting people with preexisting conditions and driving down the high cost of lifesaving prescription drugs. And what we intend to continue to do. We will not be swayed by the fact that the grim reaper continues to obstruct progress in the United States of America, and at the Senate has turned into a legislative graveyard, we're going to continue to make it clear to the American people that we're committed to the cause of lowering healthcare costs and protecting people with pre. Existing conditions and lowering the high cost of lifesaving prescription drugs, we want to find common ground. We wanna work with the other side of the aisle. We want to get things done, but we need the Senate, and we need the president to be willing to do their job. I mean now yield to dynamic vice.

"hakeem jeffries" Discussed on WNYC 93.9 FM

"I'm Jamie Floyd, the longest government shutdown in US history was also an early test for Brooklyn Representative Hakim jaffrey's in his new role as a leader for House Democrats as WNYC Washington correspondent, John O'Connor reports colleagues of Jeffrey say he passed that test, but still has more to deliver open. The government. Brooklyn, congressman Hakeem Jeffries had just delivered a pep talk to his House Democratic colleagues on the thirty third day of the partial government shutdown a public now at press conference. He was delivering a message to President Donald Trump and Republicans the government shutdown needs to end in order for us to have. A responsible mature conversation about border security, two months into his term as chairman of the House Democratic caucus Jeffries immediately found himself in a pressure cooker fighting back against Trump keeping his flock on message and bouncing the instincts of moderate Democrats to cut deals with insurgents who want to breathe fire just two years ago. He was a backbencher in the minority party and flirting with a run for mayor now at the age of forty nine and in his fourth term Jeffries is the fifth ranking democrat in a newly energized majority allies say he got there, by honing. The Democrats message to a sharp point and using sharp elbows for rivals who get in the way right person at the right time, given the diversity that we have in our caucus. That's democratic Representative. Greg Meeks whose district includes parts of queens, and Nassau counties is unprecedented. The longest shutdown history of our country. And yet. He's realizing skills that he's obtain from the state legislature to here. It's been here. It had to learn quickly on the leadership job itself was a surprise. It came open when queen's Representative Joe Crowley, lost his primary last year to Alexandria, Cossio Cortez. Colleagues say Crowley council. Jeffries on how to beat Oakland. Representative Barbara Lee who announced that she wanted the job three months before Jeffries did Crowley declined. An interview for this story, but he praised Jeffries after House Democrats voted in November the country's in great hands a caucus degrade hands. With Akeem the quickest wits in the house today, the race echoed ideological divisions. In the party Lee is a hero to progressives. The only member to vote against open ended military action after the nine eleven attacks. Jefferies is also a member of the progressive caucus, the one who raises campaign money from Wall Street and the real estate industry and supports charter schools. Jeffries, beat Beasley by ten votes with support from the new centrist freshman, and formerly red districts, and they voted down Barbara Lee activists like jank, Uber of the young Turks with his four point two million YouTube followers, were angry that Lee lost. They denied her that leadership role. So they could put her Kim Jeffries in there. They'll buckle the Donald Trump. Welcome to the new democratic majority Jeffries declined an interview for this story allies say he climbed so quickly because he knows what it's like to be stepped up. He started out as a corporate lawyer with a masters degree from Georgetown in a lot of grief from NYU in two thousand. He challenged veteran state assemblyman Roger green and lost two years later. He thought about challenging green again only to learn his home had been redrawn. One block outside of greens district, New York assemblyman. Walter Moseley's, a friend who won Jeffrey seat when Jefferies left for congress. He says the loss meet Jeffrey stronger that politics is a contact sport. You might not get it done the first time. But also believe if you're persistent and people around you believe in what you're do that you alternately Barry out your goals Jeffries eventually won the seat when green ran an unsuccessful campaign for congress by two thousand twelve it was Jeffries who was eyeing a seat in Washington. The one held by Representative Ed towns for. Thirty years towns retired rather than face the challenge. Great respect for my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, but under Republican control Jeffries was a pit bull on the House Judiciary committee here he is during July two thousand sixteen hearing about Hillary Clinton's private Email server. It's a reckless legislative joyride designed to crash and burn. It's a sham but advisers say he was restless in the minority in two thousand fifteen he floated his name as a possible candidate against mayor de Blasio here he is on the local public television station, W NET or have no plans on running for mayor. But I'm running for mayor. Well, I certainly have no plans at this moment on any of the moment. Moving forward. Advisers say he was still considering a run last year if Democrats failed to win back the house in November since then he's played his cards carefully ducking internal party warfare. When Pelosi was facing a revolt by some Democrats Jeffries declined to say if he'd help her gather the votes, she needed for speaker continue to support.

The president has said Mexico's going to pay for this on. Let's anchor ourselves into reality. Mexico is not going to pay for this wall. So no the Senate began its new session as well. The Senate will come to order. Nice President Mike Pence presided over the proceedings the new Senate is much like the old Senate except the Republicans expanded their majority to fifty three but leadership remained pretty much the same. And so did many of the issues of get off on the wrong foot with House Democrats using their platform, reproduce political statements rather than Syria solutions. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, referring to a house Bill to reopen. The federal government. It's a Bill that Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer supports the two bills. We proposed separate the wall fight from the government shutdown. You don't have to have one. Even if you can't resolve the other, but McConnell double down.
