"Let's continue our conversation on the new amazon documentary louisville rich and the mlm industry robert. Why is there so little regulation of mlm's are in a nutshell. It's a political lobbying. Corruption that dates back to the seventies and eighties Mlm has a huge lobby on k. street and a caucus in congress and a big propaganda machine. That's pretty much the explanation for how they have suppressed any efforts at regulation when it comes to lawsuits in in the documentary referred to little row was taken to court by the state of washington. I'm in february of this year of a company settled paid over four million dollars to resolve the lawsuit. How often are. Mlm's taken to court rarely almost never when you look at the scale of this about one in seven households in the united states affected the losses of thirty billion dollars or more a year it it's inconsequential insignificant at all. What the government is doing and government is actually particularly. Ftc has become complicit in this by calling mlm legitimate without ever monitoring it or determining whether what are the foundations consumers are grossly misled here and and our wost. And that's how they are. So many are falling. Victim to it josie as someone like roberta who recruited people into these businesses. How were you trained to talk to people about why they should join a company. So there's something called forming and it's form it's an acronym it stands for Family occupation recreation message and this is a way that we were trained to recruit others. And what you're supposed to do is it's not supposed to be done in one day so as to take some time and you are supposed to form new person that you like say friend requests on social media and you're supposed to reach out to them and ask them questions about their family and you know. How many kids do you have. Tell me about your husband. And how'd you guys meet. And then later on you're supposed to reach back out and ask them about their occupation. What eating for a job. What is your spouse. do for a job. How long have you been there. do you like it. Then you're supposed to eventually reach back out and ask them about recreational activities. So what their hobbies are. What are you like to do fun. What is your family like to do. What are you wish you could do more of the future. And then once they've opened up to you and they've warmed up to you. That's when you're supposed to go in for the kill with the message and you're supposed to message them and say i have an opportunity that based on everything you've told me about your family your job your hobbies. I think this business opportunity could be perfect for you. It's predatory roberta. You were shaking. Your head as josie was talking to sound familiar. Absolutely yeah i there's every. Mlm has a different tactic. The forming is just one. I've seen so many different ones in lula rhode called seventy two crews and you would set a timer for five minutes and write down as many names as you possibly could. And even if you didn't know the person's name you could literally right starbucks barista who makes my coffee. If you didn't know their name and then you were to reach out to them and try to get them to book a pop up with you. It was incredibly predatory scammy and i never ever did it. Because just it made me feel gross. Robert explain a little bit more about the psychological side of of mlm's and it seemed like it's become deeply rooted in in the business model..

"And that's exciting and then the community aspect as well because we're in such an online world now where we think we're connected but we're really not we got this email from courtney who says can any of your guests talk about how. Mlm companies target military spouses as a former military spouse. I saw these. Mlm's all over basis and posts and went to a few parties for the products. Robert anything you can share. Yes certainly through pyramid scheme alert. I do hear from people all over the world. And i did see and recognize the some time ago that military spouses had become a target. I guess this is again. Driven by economic need loneliness multiple deployments and and they become quite vulnerable of the reasons That have been given here. 'isolation economic need Wanting to contribute wanting to make use of talents and mlm comes along. That's it really. The vulnerability is the common feature that you see psychological economic social vulnerability involving isolation or you know Inability to really fulfil lives potential. An mlm claims to to offer the opportunity to to fulfill all these things. Answer all these problems. That's part of the big lie out a vet. Mlm offers so military. Spouses are have become as have immigrants. Have stay at home. Mothers blue-collar You name it. They have found the the weak spots in our society which keeps increasing as the middle class suffers setbacks. Mlm's market keeps growing. What we did hear from some people who say they've had a good experience working with an mlm. Hey this is jarred from apple grove calling. I would say that. Mlm has definitely changed my life for the better. It has been a great second source of income for me for over a decade now. And so i am all about the right elms. There are definitely some charlotte's out there like any brand of business or branch of business So you have to do research julie. i'm from florida. I'm a partner with the juice. Plus company and network marquette industry is better than traditional. It may not be perfect but it is better. There are excellent company out there. You should not have to invest much. There should be incredible support. That's what we get with this company. And if people do their due diligence they'll be able to find one that they can feel comfortable with jared julie. Thanks for those messages and we should say we heard from from a good number of people who said they found a good. Mlm and saying you know people need to do their research and not all mlm's are the same rubber while we understand this is not a. it's not an industry. That's that's being watched very closely. Is it possible to have an ethical. Mlm no it's not. I mean the model itself is inherently deceptive and inherently harmful if your income proposition is dependent on recruiting other people. Those other people's income proposition depends on recruiting other people. that's an unsustainable impossible model. It will always place the vast majority in the bottom where they cannot make money so there is a built end lie to the proposition itself. It will result and statistically we know this in the vast majority of them suffering financial harm so the solicitation itself is is really an invitation to be horned. And that's the consequence that plays out to our that how anybody could define that as ethical are there any. Mlm's that follow that rule of the majority of your money coming from sales rather than recruitment again in the twenty first century. Does it really make sense that someone could make a sustainable living settling commodity products by themselves on their own from their house. I mean just on its face you can see that it really is not a model that would that could support many people. If any were discussing the new amazon docu series lula rich it digs into the multilevel marketing company. Lula row and it tells us about the mlm industry today.

"Hi i'm jen white. And this is the one a podcast. You may have been one of many. Who found themselves glued to a screen watching amazon's lula rich documentary the series uncovers the rise and decline at the multilevel marketing clothing business. Leroux i had achieved. The dream is selling magic leggings. This is a huge opportunity in america. Women were selling breast milk so they could afford startup. cost just becomes circus. Mark start spouting off passages from the moment a mass delusion my god. I'm in a colt. The documentary exposes the inner workings of multilevel marketing companies or mlm's these companies recruit contractors to both sell their products and to bring in more independent contractors. The more people contractor brings into the company. The more money they stand to gain leroux was one of countless. Mlm's operating in the us and while they're legal one estimate says only twenty five percent of people in them turn a profit. The federal trade commission is even said that some. mlm's are indeed pyramid schemes. So today we take a deep dive into the business of mlm's and we talked to people who were once in joining us. Today are robert l. fitzpatrick author of ponzi. Nomex the untold story of multilevel marketing. He's also president of pyramid scheme alert. That's an international association that works to expose and prevent pyramid scheme fraud also with us today. Roberta blevins former lula row consultant and the host of the life after. Mlm podcast and josie nike. She's the creator of the not the good girl youtube and a former top mlm distributor and we did reach out to leroux for their response to the documentary but did not hear back in time for this broadcast a robert. Let's start with some definitions. What is multi level marketing and what are the hallmarks of an mlm. Well that's the question. Most people don't address. They just get in them their solicited essentially they're all have four. Major characteristics are all based they present themselves as sales companies but they are based on the endless chain. that is What their most famous for is recruiting you recruit one person who recruits and other person. So you have this. Long genealogical chain of distributors so-called distributors and that becomes the basis for. Mlm's hallmark promise of an unlimited income. You have to pay to get into it. There's an entry fee. You normally have to buy products monthly or or In order to stay qualified you have to recruit if you're really going to make money that's the people who make money recruit and then there's Echinacea formula pay plan formula that transfers money from that long genealogy of recruits up to the person's at the top those four characteristics define what multi and all of them have those same four characteristics. Now pyramid-schemes are illegal in the us in theory. How would an mlm operate differently from pyramid scheme. Well in theory and there is no law in the united states. There's no national law that defines pyramid scheme or outlaws them so effectively. What operates here or case laws. There are various cases and under these case laws the trade regulators have sort of constructed theory or theoretical model in which an endless chain operation could be legal and so these include The majority of the money coming in the door and on which these bonuses or money transfers occur come from retail sales not from the purchases of the individual circle distributors or participants themselves that there is some mechanism for buying back if someone wants to get out or discovers the they don't wanna be ended anymore. They feel they've been harmed and third some disclosure occurring in which people really do understand what the odds are. What the mechanism is how they would make money. How many have ever made money or not made money. If there's adequate disclosure there's by back and the money is coming from read the government currently theoretically as a policy says that would be legal. They don't go out and monitor these companies to see if any of them do that right. That's you know so. A person should not assume that when they get into to accompany it is it is legal but by definition no because arbitrarily occasionally. Ftc prosecutes these schemes. All my god they discover. Oh most of that. Money isn't coming from retail sales. Nobody's making money and nobody really understood. What the heck they signed when they got into it now. Roberta you were a lulu distributor for those who may be wondering if they're in an mlm are signed. Do you think they should be looking for you now. There definitely are a lot of red flags that you're going to experience join these companies Somebody that's telling you that you're about to own your own business for a very small amount amount a small amount of money. It's usually a pretty big red flag the emphasis on the sisterhood the emphasis on the community the emphasis that it's about this business opportunity and not the actual product. Those are going to be really big red flags that you should look for when deciding whether or not to join these businesses josie. You're in the top one percent of three. Mlm's explain exactly what that means. So i was a six-figure earner in multilevel marketing and. I joined when i was a hairstylist. Sixteen months later. I was able to quit my job and do. Mlm fulltime from home. Something that i never thought about when joining like robert said you need to look at all the hallmarks of what makes them think. Pyramid game multilevel marketing. I didn't even understand really what. Mlm was in my head. I was just oh it's legal. Okay yeah i can make sale. And i really liked the product because a lot of the products are bad products. They're good just like other non mlm products and that's what gets people in a lot of the times and then at sisterhood and everything else it kind of goes from there. So i just started just to join And it kind of took off. I in the beginning it wasn't about recruitment or i didn't wanna recruit you know. I just needed a little bit of money to help me pay off a medical debt. Now we dug through some financial disclosure statements. For some of the biggest. Mlm's offer hair care company. Monate ninety two percent of the.

"Everybody at an anyone and yet whenever you see any of these practices offered outside of the context that you're offering them it's relate mainstream world of business and worked on and life. You know just like accessibility. In the context of life you do always see them bundled with sort of these three parts. There's the teaching. There's the teacher. And there's the sang-hun there's a community. There's a congregation. There is an end these three things new. It's it's been my experience that no matter what path no matter what tradition. You're looking at no matter where these these things have evolved out of that triumvirate always exists. And i've wondered in the past like what's the reason for that and and i've talked to so many teachers of different traditions and they've they've effectively also the same thing. Which is that. If you pull one away the house falls and so. I'm wondering how how you translate this to the world you're living in. And how do you recreate that. In a way where where you understand that the levels and the structure around it is still there in a way that people are supported in the work. Sure will for each of these paths right. Let's let's differentiate spiritual paths. The goal is basically some sort of enlightenment right. Some sort of you know final or never to be achieved final of enlightenment. That's way beyond this kind of human condition. And so i would say in the workplace were operating in a way that moves towards that it. The what we're talking about is not going to get us to the final place but it gets away from the human condition a little bit into moving from the head to the heart. Let's say maybe not all the way from the heart to the soul But moving at least from the head to the heart and so all of the things that we do at work. I'm very conscious of what has worked in spiritual traditions or wisdom traditions and we try to replicate some of those things so we have community groups as example because we know how powerful asanga setzinger a bible study or catechism or temple is for people. You want to have community. You want to be able to talk about the things that really important to you so we recreate that at work. There's a private practice at the the thing that you do on your own and.

The Hero from Season One

"It's time for another installment of si-hun it's still alive and this time we're going back to season one episode twenty-six the hero and it premiered on july fifth nineteen fifty eight sixty three years ago on my third birthday. The hero opens up with mike underwater. Telling us these working with. Dr george snider on a project to turn ocean plants into food. Apparently they need funding for their research. And that's where a millionaire elliot conway and his wife. Gloria come in you see. Elliot is a big game hunter and he wants to take his hunting underwater and he wants to hunt for sharks and giant squid only problem. He doesn't know how to dive. He needs mike to teach him and gloria so he can bag. What's down there. Mike price five thousand dollars now since it's going to research glorious says it's a worthy cause and a tax write off elliot agrees to pay like twenty five hundred dollars upfront and the remaining twenty five hundred when he gets his first shark. So now they're off to a place known for sharks portable ongko and they go in elliott's private plane and that plane. Looks like a dc. Three named misguided gal now. Puerto blanco is on the west coast of south america. A small fishing village with a new hotel. Not much more. Just as they're getting off the plane guy comes running up and he introduces himself as dr gomez. Any needs to use of elliott's plane to get a sick child to a hospital over three hours away. Elliot agrees so now. They're all set to start their scuba training. And mike tells. Gloria things will be okay if elliott follows all precautions glorious says he never does mikes response he better now before they start training mike scouts out the deep area offshore for sharks. We see a variety of sharks white tips black tips and even some clown fish interesting. Now we start to see what scuba training was like in nineteen fifty eight. Mike takes the couple through snorkeling skills and then talks about how the equipment is delicate and technical. He tells them there is only one way and that is safely theory in practice. That's what it takes. But elliott is getting impatient in the next scene we see mike demonstrating what happens when a balloon is inflated at depth and brought up boom. Goes the balloon back on the boat. Mike tells them it's called an air. Embolism and you must always excel. Exhale as you extend. Gloria asks mike. How fast and he tells her no faster than your bubbles. Elliott wants to know. When do we stop learning and go hunting. He wants his shark. Glorious says she's tired and wants to sit out the next dive. Elliot tries to coax her into diving. But mike says it's dangerous to dive if you're tired so now we switch back to the hotel and we can clearly see the tension between elliott gloria. Gloria tells mike that that elliott is a mixed up millionaire. He's an architect. Who inherited the conway oil company when his father was killed in an auto accident. Elliott doesn't want to really be an architect anymore. Just a big game hunter. Now elliott comes into the scene and he's carrying a spear gun that he's all proud of its cocked and loaded. Mike is furious and he and elliot start to argue. And in the argument elliot drops the spear gun. It goes off narrowly missing gloria and lodging in palm tree. Now we switch back underwater. Mike says elliott has be elliott has become pretty good. Shot with the spear gun. And they're shooting at this target. That set up kind of lake for archery. But mike says he just needs to stop pointing a gun at mike. Now we switch back to land where mike. Gloria elliott are working on camera to document the shark on elliott. Says he wants to order. Chicken cacciatore for dinner might tell them. Oh no that's too spicy before diving. Says okay good now. Probably order to and elliot goes off. It's just mike gloria now. Gloria tells mike she's unhappy made a big mistake in marrying elliot. Mike tries to console her and she tells mike he's sweet and she puts her head on his chest. Elliot sees this and is upset. What's going to happen when they go on the shark hunt the next morning. They are at the dive site. Mike cuisine i finds a shark and is ready to take them down for the hunt. Just as soon as you can get the bait ready now. The three of them are down below at seventy five feet. Gloria has the camera as mike elliott head off to the hunt just end we switched to the surface in a boat is approaching. Its dr gomez. He needs elliott's playing again. As you get close to the dive boat. He throws his anchor over the side and it crashes down into gloria breaking her rag might just happens to look back and sees the glory is in trouble and they both rush back elliott steps in and starts buddy breathing with gloria the sharks. Fresh off debate sense trouble. As the big one continues to circle. Mike is impressed. With elliott's calmness and sends them to the surface while mike fights a rearguard action again and he spears the big shark. We then see all the divers back on board and dr gomez says we must go sure back at the hotel. Elliott s mike. Why don't they haven't hospital here. In puerto blanco might tells him. It's always money. Justin dr gomez emerges and skulls mike for letting gloria dive in her condition. She's expecting a child in six months. And dr gomez congratulates elliott by saying congratulations senor. Now you need to take her back to the states to the hospital. That does elliott is going to build a hospital in portable. Ongko and keith tells mike it'll be done in six months. Mike says that can't be done elliott. Replies you don't know me when i go to work elliott conway the hero. You'd recognize him. Get Off The Cycle And Run With Rodney C. Burris

"Mindful tribe. I've read lots of books of had lots of authors on. We talk about mindfulness. We talk about getting grounded. We talk about habits. And today i have an author on who has created a book that is just so interesting and compelling in different unusual and it really grabbed me. It was a lot of fun to read. And it's about habits. It's it's you know that topic of routines and that kind of thing but it's framed in a very different way that i think you will find refreshing. The author i have on today is rodney. See burruss rodney. Are you and mindfulness mode. Today i am totally in mindfulness. Mold bruce a pleasure. Thank you so much. Well it's a pleasure to have you on the show really truly and i just wanna share a bit more about you. Rodney with my tribe and rodney. Cbs is an expert at team building and program development. He teaches workshops across the us and abroad. He holds a psychology degree from the john. Hopkins university and a masters in nonprofit management from capella university. And like i said he's author of a book and this book is called. Get off the cycle and run and i had the pleasure of recently reading this book and just really spoke to me. And rodney has a quote that i want to share with you right now in the quotas to inspire means to fill someone with the urge or ability to do or feel something. That's one of rodney's quotes rodney. What does mindfulness mean to you. Let's start there. There is a monk by the name of a and i'm going to try my best pronounce. His name bruce at figures tick nah hundreds of. That's right. yeah tear not on. Yes i i became aware of this. He was having a conversation with over and one of the things that he shared was he would go to these walks in the walk with never about the destination it was always about the journey and he the walk with take as long as it needed to take than every step. He was trying to be present in that moment in. I don't know why out of all of the years of hearing about mindfulness and hearing about being attentive and is one thing to be physically present but you may not be mentally there and all those sorts of things that conversation. It's mr On hun in oprah together it funk in in it would that was my start. That was about seven years ago bruce. That was my start to really become aware of. What does it mean to be mindful of how showing up in this world of how m- communicating of what my thoughts are. What are my feelings telling me but better yet. How am i choosing to define any experience. Over quarantine bruce. I cut my foot last year. My dad and my sons. We actually built this shed and my in my backyard my own property while we were tearing down the shared and putting up a new one. I had cut my foot pretty badly out there. Like kind of being seeded for some weeks going up and down stairs kind of scoot scoot in backwards. You know not really being able to walk thinking that. I can't stand a little bit trying. China wash dishes or whatever wouldn't agent and swollen up and it's very easy to say him passed off always happens to me man who not one thing. It's another at choice right How i chose to view that bruce is you know for better for worse. It took me a little bit longer to appreciate enfor transparency with everyone to share this markle this moment with us. It took me a little bit longer to appreciate the gravity of the situation and we were last year kinda worldwide globally. Just kind of stay shelter in place. Stay at home. It took me a while to really internalize that and what. I realized that me her having a hurt with like that it kind of kept me grounded. It kept me out of harm's way. And i chose to view kind of like you know bumper pool or kind of like things like offense a little bit. If i wasn't aware enough to not run out into the street right for whatever my reasons were were not. I had something that allow me as i came to grips with the gravity of what was going on to just stay put and i think that that mind phone is bruce. Kinda just being intentionally aware of how on choosing survive to defy interactions moments. Events is one of the things that that just really can lead to a healthier better life and it's something that i hope to share. I hope your foot's a lot better now rodney's better almost a year ago now so yeah puts a lot

The Hidden Opportunity In A 'Work-From-Anywhere' World

"Has seen many people working from heart and as a result of that. There's an increased awareness amongst a lot of people that i'm the kenai actually work from home but i can kind of work from anywhere and the opportunity in that. Most people talk about is that companies can save money company save money on their corporate offices and overhead any structure and expenses that go along with that and of course there's the opportunity to the individual to spend more time at home with the family and get a bit more flexibility in their work life but the opportunity that i keep thinking about. Is that if you have a consumer facing or even a client facing business. There's an opportunity for you to create spaces way the people that come in to buy your products and services can also do would be to work while they imagine a scenario over the next year or so where somebody who is your customer. Just imagine if every one of those customers is someone that's been working from hun the opportunity to get out of every now and then. He's kind of a good thing for them now. If they've got to go to your store maybe by some nails at the hardware store order by some shoes at the sports store wherever they going. Whatever your businesses if they've got to go out and do that task during the day and they can also stay in your store in your retail space or your business space and work from there then that might be an opportunity for them to stay longer form a closer relationship with your brand maybe by additional products. But it's also good for them because it's a bit of the skype and even if you're in the services business i mean if you're an accounting firm or legal firm set up hot discs for people to come in and work from that spice so i think there's a big opportunity for particularly retail businesses. But really any sort of client facing business where people would come into your business to interact with you to buy a product or service. I think there's an opportunity for you to create safe spaces and nickleby hygiene covert safe and everything else but if you create those spaces kind of like co working spaces in a way if you create those spaces inside your business you might just find that you're gonna get more customers. Just come and hang out and in that hanging out the form a closer connection with your brand and presumably hopefully by some more products or services.

The Promise of Cloud-Native Gaming

"The first voice. We hear his jade as she explains how. She became obsessed with a young age. None of the thongs. We take an investment advice. Ca six nc dot com slash disclosures for more information. So i always knew. I wanted to make games. I figured it out. When i was about twelve years old i was visiting my uncle. Who lived in san francisco at the time. And i made it my mission to beat him at all of his games before i left for the and it was during that time that it dawned on me that someone gets sneak games and i thought awesome. Why not me. I had already been into robotics and done a little bit of programming. That's when i really decided to focus on that as a creator and started working on game projects mice airtime so how does building for cloud differ from what you've done before have always been attracted by the bleeding edge of games aims constantly. Reinvented if you look at what. A video game was ten years ago. It was totally different twenty years ago. What drew me to for example working on the assassin's creed franchise in building that up. The next consoles were coming in. That was big opportunity. Go okay what can we do with eight x the processing power and so a lot of those questions not have pushed me towards my career decisions all along as what attracted me to google this time which is okay. It's not ajax. It's the cold data centers processing power. Okay it's the whole model for how we think about client. Server multi-player games needing to work is totally offended and change some of the largest games today fortnight clans. They run most of their network on the cloud. So john what distinguishes what we have now from true cloud streaming or what you call it gaming. Which is what we're seeing now. Looks like it's actually mostly being hoisted existing council enters title development for playstation Stocks on and it was been found. These gains fundamentally different popcorn in some most excited about the second way of games that might become around the corner be called in cloud needed games. What really on any game. It's built around four cloud that's only play of all in the cloud infrastructure as opposed to something. We are currently in the first wave of cloud gaming and really what. We're seeing the convenience of cloud gaming. What we're seeing is okay. It's all the games that we can play another places but we get rid of the download time. We can play more instantly. We don't have to worry about dates to play on different screens other great benefits by the really exciting thing. And i think that's what's gonna be kind of the cleveland of what. Tv was radio is when we unlock. What the second wave of cloud gaming one of the things is obviously the client server model right. Now you're limited to the interactions and simulations that can run the locally on people's machines no matter what even if you're running your example fortnight is running on the cloud and a lot of other games are as well in the back end. There's still designed with the idea that they have to run on a local pc or a local consoler local mobile device in some cases. And really what's going to unlock not only the processing power and what we call elastic q. Of the data center but also the idea that essentially any game can be designed like one big land party. So you don't have to worry about networking times. You can at least know exactly what those are in an designed for them. Measure them in a consistent way and also hits up against a limit of how big of a shared experience you. Are there new game mechanics or even game genres that. You find uniquely enabled through the cloud. Johnny britain about how it might help solve games. Cold start problem. But what are some of the other mechanics. You see enabled by cloud gaming when you think about the magic of cloud gaming. You're being sent a stream that from the pipes and stuff. It looks exactly like a stream of video data when you think about this new paradigm there can be a one to sort of infinite and very strange connection of what in quits impact that stream so if you think about it someone. Typing in the side of a youtube shot can have an input into my environment. They type tomato tomatoes. Start falling from the sky in my game. Thousands of connected to my game could be. They're playing the rule of. Let's say zombie hoard. That's attacking those all could be real players right and they're in quicker just on a mobile phone in a very simple interface for doing that. Because the zombie needs controls. I think a lot of the really exciting things that disassociation of direct relationship between number of people connected to client either one or exceed or whatever. Hundred is ugly. The biggest we've seen and this way. That huns of inputs can impact. The simulation live

It was like this, and it's no way I'm going out those samples and need to to be nice. Elation volunteered for folding days. Ain't gonNA happen. We need to find a solution for it. Israel was already requiring anyone returning from abroad to go into a two week long self quarantine, and that meant that the mall was out after all if he came to Cyprus in had to quarantine when he returned, he'd lose two weeks worth of business. e! It didn't know what to do. And we need to find someone else and you yourself for not immoral. No. But as he was trying to figure this out Cyprus, declared its own fourteen day quarantine. So now. Whoever would come would need to quarantine for fourteen days in Cyprus and then porn for fourteen days upon returning to Israel. All for one little cut, and surprisingly enough he managed to find someone enter shown Izenberg from. A houseplant tour with Mercy Morris

"Let's officially start by saying hello mercy. Moore's we're here in your front room back room. I didn't know how you describe this room. And I'm the first I mean you haven't had a toy yet your N. G. S. opening of Your House plunk collection so I guess I'm honored to be getting the experience of coming on this tour. I think this is really special. Ngs's agreed to have this as an open house tour which is by arrangement. Only did you able did. How did it come about well? I met one of the local guys last year when I was selling. Houseplants at somebody else's opened and he just said to me in passing wanted has plants and initially though stupid idea and then the idea kept going round round in my head and I actually know that would be really fun. It would be really good for house plants with Nick because people then they'd be almost as important as Garden People Heaven Full Fan. Yeah the case. Yeah so I got them round and they did. They did say I was mad. They didn't say couldn't do it so he we on here. We are and you have a wonderful collection. We've just heard today that you've you've been awarded. The status of National Collection of clarified. Some cultivars tomato cultivars. Hey fantastic you have to have your teeth into say we? Can we get to see as we go round some of your collection which we can talk about fervor? There's loads of big leaves in here. We start with some of these big leaves how I take you to the beginning of the whole thing. Yes you cut. That is a beautiful Swiss cheese. Plunk just say that is a really nice specimen. This is Austin Austin Morris. And he was the first house plant that I had that lived. My mother was deeply into plants and she spent most of my childhood trying to get me into plants as well. Roy didn't work and as a student on why the student I had lost plants that are killed and this was the first one that actually lived so he is the the three years old this year while spence is that Short because I've continually are taken out the pro tournament cartoons and shrink against East. He's nice and short. He's very compact isn't he? And I think that is a really good tip because lots of people get to the stage with Swiss Cheese. Plumber does get out of hand and they kind of very much. Fear doing that hatbox. But you're not really shows that that works brilliantly because it's go beautiful fantasy leaders come which mature leaves. But he's a reasonable size. I'm taking a leaf out of your book. Literally with my own monster is when they get to that stage because that is the way to do it. I love the way you got the black label lesser. Ns Nineteen eighty-seven bats tasked with me many many times. Sometimes of taking on the train last time it moved has had to get French petunias carcass. It's quite heavy. I can imagine it's a bit of a job to report is a fantastic looking plot and Yeah you've you've you've kept looking in great shape and it's very very healthy and I'm sure there's always somebody looking for cutting. Yes yes so you got one. That was yes. That's the scruffy. One from last lauper is due to be done in about eight pro. People want to see it in its full glory. They need to come in okay. Okay and so people can couldn't contact you to make an appointment to come and see your collection here in Hun Hun Bay in Kent of Forget. Murray off for a minute How how busy you expecting to be with this tour? Is it going to be literally going to wait and see? Yeah I would have thought was the first house plant offering from the NGOs that would be an attractive option for people but I guess time will tell exactly I think a lot of the established. Ngs Garden visitors so used to visiting herbaceous borders and shrubberies and so on the there will be a bit hesitant about it. Perhaps but I'm hoping also that bring people who've never been to an end. Gs gardening before perhaps a younger crowd who are into house. Plants on rather than than hanging gardens year savvy unless just turned to this one for stepladder with your some of your floor fights Komo SOM plants on it. Let's waste display plants. I'm always looking. I find those wooden stay. I'm always looking for him. Outside junk shops. It's one of those things to kind of serendipity has to be in place OPA you have to go to your Grandad's garage to for that. Was she unlock all of the ones? I've seen have been about thirty to sixty pounds. I've found that one for a five. Oh good good boy. Good and you've got lots of calm. Glorified Komo some. How many cultivars are there in your national collection? It is about seventeen or eighteen but that may reduce as I find some of them are identical plants but with separate cultivar nine. Roy and what made you choose clarified? Some commotion Cultivars as a subject for national question because it's not too massive and not to. Yes we want to do is quite compact collection so you can have it in a small. How also I think they're so under appreciated as house plants. They are really long suffering. They're the easiest thing in the world to propagate they just propagate themselves while you sit there and do nothing and I think the world really needs to Stephen for the beauties that they are. What's your favorite Cultivar? Ooh That's my but you know why ins oh lovely. She's actually perseus tat. It's more Lime Green and stripes. That's really nice. They set on Powell as well. The one that's recovered was chopped the year before and you can do cuttings of them relatively easily as well. Yup well the the you have a one fleet leafy living. We've also got more shells with more plants on them. Some little baby spider plants. I can see and some. Is that some Premier Li ads there or some kind. Of course he ever media earth style. They're all out. That's propagating moment. Look at they are in Little Koya. Oh yes Paul Fox. I find them really difficult to route because they they tend to live ever without route. Wuhan Beyond The Virus with Ivy Yang, Founder of the Wuhan Reboot Project

"Obviously all of us have been impacted by Kuroda in some capacity. We just talked a little bit before review that we're working from home And like some people have traveled act to their actual homes just to practice more precautions. Stocking up on little things like instant carding toilet paper and some Dry packaged goods Obviously has impacted us as New Yorkers but how has it impacted you and your family and can you tell us why it might be a little different from the average person? Yeah I mean the situation. Hun was really really bad. I would say like the past couple weeks and my dad was actually here for Christmas. I was planning on on going back to Wuhan Early January because your family's from there right. Yeah they're most of my family's still there. Some of my family members are fighting this virus in the frontline. They're doctors or community. Workers not enroll. 'cause of making sure people are Ok but like if feels actually super personal result we again with them and like my dad. Who was supposed to go back was still planning on going back going back like couple of days before they locked down the city and that's actually hit as that. This is really serious. I think they will hire. We were all very much like what were the. Us has at right now. We're just like this might be. This is just Like symptom collects them terms and it will cast. It's spiraling thing. It really is coming at hot and it's coming in in a really strong. We're all we all have to take cautioned measures especially given that it's now in the US Russia And you know. I don't think we actually set up that you were born in new hot and you move to America when you were nine years old or Katya our home town America And you just a little bit about that journey about your parents Coming here and your career at how it's been really They'll all about the. Us China relations. You work for Alibaba. You've worked as a whole China. Just you know how it might also struck a chord in that like. You've always been an advocate for your culture in different spaces and how corona may actually be impacting that even more yeah so prior to Columbia a were Alibaba group and in the International Congress. There's function and it's about tallying alibaba story to a Western audience and then kind of the whole ecosystem and the different visits unit. That people might not be aware of as part of the ALIBABA can economy And Penta reason I loved that role was that I was constantly traveling back to China to the headquarter and That gave me opportunity just within a day or two and fly to see my grandma who still lives in my family And it's a really big part of my identity because I grew up there until I was nine and every year since then I will. I went back to see my family and I still have all these like really fond memories of going to the night market eating watermelon. Worm some reason those like kind of the experiences that I still associate with like I still think about because there was just my most like like the best days of my youth in some ways so this like what happened in Wuhan. It's like when it happened. I mean we're all New York and it just felt really personal. We had to do something. You're what we wanted to do. Initially because people were all trying to Supplies fire from the. Us face masks and there was no shortage of that people. Were all trying to Ben and helping ways that they can and when you say we can you tell me who who that is We so we have. A group of friends are working on the project. We more out with currently Attendee as a she is an illustrator and she's also from hot and we've been working on trying to design these kind of images and at those represent. Wuhan will be more on the PODCASTS. Were talking about this like Hand Sinu- Joe Blake like that shows like a w sign but it also shows hand in hand in solidarity and we're just like going through all of these images and themes are what we associate with John Who's not from. Mahanta had been super helpful in like brainstorming. Different ideas Do you think about how we could do. rebooting like post a coronavirus. Were also working with a WHO Bay Institute of the Arts They're they've been super gracious in supporting design aspect and just having a team does all can working with us to think about what does will represent. What are some of the things that we want to bring to the world in addition to just like John Cornyn virus like that's the only association that were currently kind of learning hunt pool because no one ever has been able to pronounce like Han so thickly yeah and um not everybody knows about

At-Home Workout 2

"So this one is going to be an intense one so clear some room in your house your garden or wherever tatum at home and tell me some explosive movements. Ms First Up. We get between jumping lunges song regime know how to perform a lunge but all the difference here is not it's apply metric movement is boost cardiovascular endurance as well as lower body strength. So what did you get into the lunch? Position prepared to jump by bending your knees and sinking down into a deep lunge lean slightly forward and contractual on then explode up as explode up and jump into the air. Bring your feet quickly together on twitter. Feed positions is as you begin to land. You should also switch your arm positions as you do as well and then obviously as you. Land maintain a balanced Position you'll forward knee each Catholic bishop Ford made should be over. Your forward foot are not beyond and obviously to make sure that you land softly on the forward mid foot and let your he'll come in contact with the ground and then repeats so that's a first movement the jumping lunch with that. Have a jumping. Squawked say similar to a bodyweight squats becoming the lost episodes but we're GONNA explode upwards instead of stopping at the standing position and jump up arms towards the sky or the ceiling and then landed safely sink into all squats. Repeat we did have the inch. One said the inchworm exercise for a little everything really helps strengthen the muscles of -Tario chain which the front hall your body and also stretches the muscles of your Paul Stereo Trains. Back off your body. So He's talked to me entire body in some capacity and getting the blood flowing again. Start Your feet. Roughly hits and support. Take a big breath. Did that as you exhale. Look down at the ground installed reaching your hands towards the floor in front of your feet allow you back to bend one. Vertebra at a time and place your in front of your feet and start walking your hands away from your feet as you can get further away from your body. Allow you heels to come off the ground as your body begins the straighten so when you huns directly under your shoulders check your phone at this stage because you should be full plank position you'll coal chess quads triceps and shoulders or engaged. Then when you're in the plank start walking your hands back towards your feet until directly in front of your feet and stomach up on repeat the movements again from this begins. Go into a high knees. Say Hynix engage. I'll cool strengthen the muscles in legs and get our heart rates up to improve momentum. A coordination and flexibility so feet hit with Paul together a false explosive action. Lift your knee up towards your chest. Alternating knees each time on next excise thing called a groin. A- now the going is was the two movements not cold. The Groin Outweigh game for the one that is the explosive movement rather than the stretch. So how do we do this again? To Stop for the plank or extended push-up position with Angie jumped. Bertha feet woods chest. Landing with feet next to our hand started on the floor and does jumping off feet up towards a hands again to raise your hands in front of us on. Rays are up a tool so so. We ended up finishing in a deep squat. We have placed on back on the ground in front of us and jump off the back and repeat movement so jumped the feet forward from descended prying colpepper position and then into deep squat and so on jump defeat back so these are all movements. Now is persistent conceptualize circuit. So we're GONNA START WITH FIFTEEN REPS OF ARE JUMPING. Lunges straighten to ten to fifteen reps of are jumping squats. Were then going to straighten to ten inch. Worms followed immediately by twenty five seconds of high knees. I'm then going. Finish the first round of the circuits with ten to fifteen groin as an opponent completion of the Groin. As this marks round one of four soon repeat this three times and hopefully you'll experience your heart rate. Pounding calories being burned sweat working up on. You'll have hot a great at home workout again. If is slightly beyond your experience or ability level than simply adjust the number of rounds of the number of reps exercise or again. Make it more difficult for yourself. By adding rounds or increasing rep counts or trying complete. It's time to say self-assessment time and then try to stick within like I had to do it under excellent time each time we can. We'll keep physically active at home. We just need a bit of space. A Road Trip Along the Oregon Coast

"I'd like to welcome Jessica Baker from Boundless Bakers Dot Com. Who's come to talk to about the Oregon Coast Jessica? Welcome to the show. Thanks Chris Thank you for having me and you are currently coming to us from Orlando. What were you doing out on the Oregon coast and the trip that we're gonNA talk about well. My family and I have been traveling in a RV for the past thirteen months so we have seen quite a bit of the country and probably our favourite stop so far where we spent twelve weeks was the Oregon coast this past spring. And we've now we're in Florida and you see your family. I understand that to be your husband to kids three and five and three cats at its correct so we have a thirty five foot trailer just full of love of of of little people. Lots of cats and That's that's our family. Excellent in why should we go to the Oregon coast? Well probably the number one reason to go to the Oregon Coast is. It is absolutely gorgeous. Like I said we've been traveling the US and up into Canada for the past thirteen months and the Oregon coast is probably the one of the most unique and probably the most beautiful areas on that. We've seen this far. So just the natural beauty of it. It truly is where the Where the forest meets the the sea and between the the lush green forests and the rocky rugged coastline is just absolutely gorgeous. And when we say we're the forest meets the C are we using a slogan from tourism? That really sounded like someone had thoughts. I didn't know that is like I don't know if I had heard that somewhere. I should call them and we can make that their official their social model excellent. What were you gonNA start us long to start us in Northern Oregon? So what I thought we would do as we could break it up. I'm kind of in a couple of different sections along the coast and talk about What to do each area thinks see in that sort of stuff but I figured we would start at the top and northern Oregon Group so for California like me. Just listen to what you say and put everything in reverse. I got exactly. We actually came from California so we did it in reverse but I figured we'd just start from the top for the for this a story. Yeah absolutely So as I said we. Rv So when we were in northern Oregon we stayed at a RV campground in seaside Oregon. Which is it is basically just west of Portland. I'm it's where a lot of Local Portland Portland Liens. I believe they where they go out to the coast. It's a beautiful little. Seaside town on a story is just an hour. North of seaside in Asturias where the Columbia river the mouth of the Colombia River. You'RE A little further. South of that is correct yet Yes the Columbia River and flows into the sea there. That's where Lewis and Clark. National Historical Park is so you can actually visit for platts it is where Lewis and Clark you know. That was kind of like their base when they were in the area. It's up there near story. A- another thing we loved about the story area is the story of tower So it's this. I don't know exactly how tall it is. But it's this historical tower that sits atop one of the hills in hysteria. You can actually climb the steps to it and they they sell little would in airplanes there for dollar and you can As you're as you're taking in the views like the magnificent views of the city and the the river in the C. You can actually throw your little airplanes off and watch them kind of float down into the nearby forest and it's it's really cool. My kids absolutely loved it. As did I perfect for a three three year. Old a four year old and a nine year old for me. Yeah No I. I enjoyed it just as much as they did So yeah that was kind of That was probably one of the would've are highlights in the story was was the tower and then also kind of Getting some of the history of Lewis and Clark around the area so definitely definitely all. We're checking out. I guess the idea between behind it being a paper airplane is that it's biodegr- Iraq yet. Absolutely because chances are you're never going to see it again unless it happens to float straight down but Yeah we we definitely did not get back. Yeah so then kind of moving a little bit further south as I said. We stayed in seaside Oregon Kind of some of the top attractions that we enjoyed in that area First one was a state park a state park so beautiful lots of history Lewis and Clark. Actually we're in that area as well so there's a couple of historical attractions there. We did a wonderful hike. There the climate's a loop trail. I'm it's a couple believe it was about two two and a half miles long. It actually takes you up so it is quite a bit of elevation change but the views from the top are Gorgeous you can actually see quite a few miles out into the sea where you can actually take a look at the. Tillamook rock lighthouse which is about a mile mile and a half off the coast. There's no longer in use this tiny little rock with time. He little lighthouse on it and you get a great view of it from the top of that trail so definitely an area. I would suggest checking out for again. The beaches and The hiking trails south of state park is where can beaches Cana- beach is probably one of the better known areas of on the Oregon coast. It's I think most known in terms of if you've seen pictures of the Oregon coast this is probably what you've seen pictures. Chances Are you're looking at a picture of Haystack Rock Which is a two hundred and thirty five foot sea stack and that is just off the coast of of the beach there. When the tide's out you can actually get pretty pretty close to it. They don't really encourage climbing on it But you can get get pretty close to it. When the tide's out so beautiful picturesque little little town and then yeah just getting up close and personal with Haystack. Rock is kind of one of those experiences. You WanNa. You WanNa have. When when you're in that area continuing on South? I'm just south of Ken. Beach we really enjoyed. I'm an area. It's called hug point state recreation site. I'm against kind of like a state park a protected area on but what it is is it's it's a recreation site right on the coast and it's actually a beach area and the beach is only accessible at low tide so I highly emphasize making sure you check the tides if you want to go there because there's no there's nothing to see when the type in so definitely check the tide's head outright low tide so you are able to get as much time as possible so high point so what it is is an back in the Lewis and Clark days be stage coaches before there was a road there on the stage. Coaches would actually drive along this area only at low tide and they'd kind of have to hug this point in order to get around this rocky point on the coast and hence why it's called hug point and it's really cool because you can actually see the wheel. Ruts that have been carved into the rock from the stage coaches that used to travel super neat. What else is cool about this Recreation site are. There's a couple waterfalls little waterfalls that you can kinda climbing around the rocks and checkout huns of tide pooling. So I know my kids love. The titles of the Oregon Coast as deny area has some great tide pools. There's actually pools that form within the wheel. Arrives from the stage coaches which is pretty neat Lots of little sea caves to explore. So again you don't want to be stuck in their tide's coming in so Another reason to make sure you have I on the tides and 'cause he's these little caves or super cold explorer lots of little creatures in there and and Super. Funnier it to to check out so definitely recommend going there

Predicting the Decade and Distributing Conferences

"You are listening to talk machines. I'm Katherine Gorman Neal Learns and I know it's a little bit belated Neil but happy new year. Happy new decade if you believe decades does come from complexity about zero counting depending on. Whether you're a Fortran or C I. I don't know how do you and happy do you decorate. Yeah absolutely and try to see whichever exactly but you know however you counted. It's a nice. It's a nice artificially artificially imposed time to think about what this last unit of time has meant and what is next unit of time might hold so I would love to do the traditional navel-gazing commute period of time kickoff that journalists love to do which is thinking about what we might see in this next unit of time in this next decade. And you know Oh is informed by what we've seen in this last decade. I think that we've seen this kind of reflection right. Now is so important because I think we have seen humongous change not only early in the the research and what has been technically accomplished but the way that the practitioner community works and the implications of that four four things going forward. So what do you think. Neil if you had to choose one sort of hallmark of what you think signals what we can see in the future around how work gets done. I think there's lots of lots of crystal ball gazing about. What kind of work is going to get done? And that's very exciting. I Yeah I think the how that work is going to get done and how we talk about how that work gets done is going to have a huge impact on what problems picked up in solved so it is appropriate that we choose an arbitrary number based on number fingers we have only Chand for period of reflection it makes the universe make sense with tens right. Yeah Yeah I B as being an amazing decade in terms of adoption machine learning techniques. That's absolutely clear and I guess if I look back to twenty ten I don't think I would have full cost tool that. We would be where we are now a common who who says that the things happen slower than you expect in a period of years but a period of decades same false and that seems to play. He's he's something that I I was reading over the holidays. which is the printing press was being developed? The fourteen forty S in mind in Germany by Gutenberg and I think the prince his first Bible in fourteen fifty five by fifteen twenty Martin. Luther is banging things on church. Dole's saying saying he doesn't like the pope anymore and you've got a sensitive the beginning of the reformation of the church which I find extremely interesting vesting when you compare nineteen forties when people building computers in various parts in the world And I it it'll technology to two twenty twenty. It's the same seventy eight year period and first of all it makes me think. Wow actually things happen. Pretty fast with the printing impress and wild things in some sense happen pretty slowly with computers but one of the things that happened with I think the printing press some Some point was initially. It was a tool that was used by churches to print indulgence season. Bibles and things like that. And then it was used for descent and I guess one of the things we can we seen in communication is the increase in social media and it being used in that so really radically changing the way we're having conversations not necessarily all to the good. I think probably would say the same thing about the printing press but but it takes a while to assimilate how to to do these things I think. For example. You can see changes in the way. We're doing politics and that I think he's not he's not I don't I think when people are becoming popular major politicians are becoming popular on social media platforms. I don't think it's because they are sort of spend golly geniuses that know how to conduct population reputation. I just think that there's a coincidence between that politicians personality and way of communicating and things that well on these platforms and that's that's kind of interesting and I think Yet so there's some of that going on and I think we have hope we're going to get. We need to be able to use these tools to do better communication in science as well which I think is really interesting challenge. Yeah and I think that we've we've started to see that right. I don't I I don't know when I mean you know this. I don't know when archive opened up but like I certainly became aware of it And its impact within the last decade decade and then. I think that we've seen so so that to me. Sort of took the the model of or at least the timeline of publication location of academic papers especially for this community which seems to rely so heavily on archive to communicate this information that changed radically but also the journal structure in machine. Learning at least has never been what a traditional journal structure would be like. It's sort of relied at least from my point of view relied more heavily on the main the main flagship conferences. But but now even those main flagship conferences were seeing things like people putting their posters online heavy use of QR codes in posters to like communicate back to the paper. And then also this idea that I think naps is taken up That seemed to be growing in popularity. We saw the meet UPS last year. The idea around decentralisation allegation of these larger points and I think that that Willie roles in neatly and nicely to your idea around like the printing press was a tool for four the well-established to communicate. And then it became as the idea as the technology became democratized became used to express a wider variety including dissenting opinions. And so I wonder if as we see not only the communication but the community the practitioner community become decentralized and reach a wider population and include a larger number of voices if we're knocking to see a larger variety of research questions getting chosen particularly with response to the on the ground questions that people are facing geographically being wider. I don't know does that make sense. What do you think the so many things going on? I guess when people look back at this period you suspect then they they might just say Oh and then all hell broke loose a hun- because actually there's something else that went on win. The printing press was developed at a similar time. The Ottomans Monds I think the second sacked Constantinople and that actually cools A large number of written works to leave Constantinople things. Things have not been known in say Western. You're sorry very European perspective and that sort of gave material for the printing press to welcome and one of the things things that's going on when you talk about ideas and dissemination of ideas. He's also the ideas that came out so people then started re translating the Bible. But in this case it's very complex because when you mentioned archive I see that as an old combination of the old and the new. Because this genuinely if I speak to most people that finding sort of clarification blog posts all software perhaps the most useful thing and driving through their ideas but when it comes to their citations they will cite archive papers but not those blog posts all very often not the software despite the archive papers. It's not having gone through a sort of a more formal peer review process. I think Perot Tom Dietrich how to sort of check many of them to make sure they're on subject great service to the community see but they haven't gone through a sort of formal pair of you yet. Somehow they had artifact which is more tracing back to the the notion of what a written piece of work is and how it should appear as a paper which in some sense is also relatively modern notion. Only two hundred years old. But it's so important important an interesting the what you write this disruption. Going on there's also massive conservatism. In the way we expect to do things it's not like let's revisit everything we think about scientific if it communication and conferences and everything else because in some sense I would say. Many of conferences have become undermined by the status. We place on on getting a paper in that conference. Venue for conferring they have become a status symbol for getting your tenure or students are in a very difficult position because I think they feel. PhD students that they feel that unless they have a few Europe's papers papers or you IRA. I starts papers the they I see la so now now you have to start worrying. Which conferences have I missed an GonNa Win Fund and other really good conferences that I forgot to mention they feel the the pressure to produce these papers because they feel that probably the only mark of success that came up with the new? NFL meeting. which which I thought was a great innovation this Europe so there was a meeting for people that machine learning once? You're on the stand about the community a lot of questions around this and I think that there's a way what I'm slightly worried about. Is The misalignment between those contributing to understanding and those being credited for that contribution it almost seems like back. Once you've got this idea that someone's explained clearly in a blog post you. The archetype is to cite this paper that you've never really read. Don't really understand now now. Of course the idea maybe in that paper and so forth but it's really sucked too sophisticated ecosystem communication now and I think that that's opening up challenges which you see reflected in people talk about
