WTOP It's 2 -15, I'm Rich Hunter, thanks for being with us. A bottomless brunch has long been a popular way to make the most of the weekend, but it seems more and more patrons are tossing their cookies instead of eating them. restaurants Several in California have now introduced a $50 vomit fee for customers who have one most of too many. Washington Post food reporter Emily Heil joined our Sean and Ann earlier to talk about this diner's dilemma. So apparently this has become enough of a problem that a couple restaurants have decided to institute these fees that if anyone pukes in their restaurant in a public area, I should say, you know, I don't know, we're not going to know what happens in the bathroom with the door closed. That's their, you know, their customer's business. But if a customer pukes in a public area, they get charged this dollar fee and that covers, you know, the cleanup and the inconvenience to the staff. I guess it's been enough of a problem that they've actually found that this is like necessary and apparently a deterrent. Well, Washington is definitely one of the brunch capitals of the world. Have you heard of anybody around here trying the same thing? We do love our brunch here, don't we? Yeah, no, I haven't seen this locally, but it's one of these things California, right, set does a lot of trends for the nation. So could we see this kind of start to spread? We absolutely could. it's You know, interesting. Many states actually ban bottomless brunches or their alcohol laws are such that a bottomless brunch would actually be illegal and Virginia is one of them. You'll still see specials offering bottomless brunches, but I think that these laws are, at least that was according to federal data, that these laws are kind of misunderstood often and not enforced for sure. Emily, so what's going on with the folks that are imbibing too much and having too much and are we talking about like 20 year olds who and the younger 20 somethings who try to just, you know, get a little crazy when they go out and find these bottomless things or is it actually across all pages? You know, I don't know specifically who these patrons are, but you know, you kind of ends get a of sense who, who is your, you know, your typical brunch patron who maybe doesn't kind of get how many, doesn't pace know how to themselves maybe, you know, they're really trying to cram as much value as they can into their bottomless price and they're the ones who are typically going to over imbibe. That's Washington reporter Emily Heil. A quick look at the top stories we're working on at UTOP. Republicans choose Jim Jordan as their nominee for House Speaker, putting the job within of a staunch Trump ally. She owns Northside 10, a bar and grill in Alexandria by the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and East Glebe Road. That's a spot that floods repeatedly every summer. It happens so fast. The rain hits and then it just floods. It's like that. Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson says the city is paying attention. Our pet of the week is sponsored by the rocky gorge, animal hospital resort and spa. Joining us live now is Rebecca kavanagh of the humane rescue alliance. Good morning, Rebecca, you've got diamond diamond is looking for a new home this morning. Tell us about diamond. Yes, she is good morning, diamond is an 11th month old brown and white pit bull terrier mix who weighs about 40 pounds. She's a true diamond in the rough. This sweet girl will always be your number one fan and never says no to any type of adventure. Whether it's going for a hike in the Woods or snuggling up on your couch, she's a wonderful companion with endless love to give. Now, what type of home do you think would work best for diamond? Diamond is a true extrovert and she just wants to be surrounded by our favorite people. So nothing makes her happier than meeting new friends and going for long walks. She would also like to find a home where she can continue to work on her training and show off all the tricks that she's learned so far. Now, does that include homes with other pets or children? What do you think? Yeah, a diamond still young and she's working on her manners, so she would like to find a family without any young children. She does love to play with other pops though and would enjoy sharing a home with a dog who matches her outgoing and fun loving play style. Nice. How did diamond come to the shelter? She came to HRA when her family was unable to keep her and since she's been with us, our staff and volunteers have just fallen in love with her desire to be the center of attention and her full body wiggles whenever she sees her favorite people. All right. All right, let's see if we can find diamond a new home. How can folks see her and possibly adopt her? Councilman Says Many In Queens, New York City's Hardest-Hit Borough, Can't Afford Burials
"New York City continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States and within the city some of the hardest hit places aren't minority neighborhoods in queens places like Elmhurst and Jackson heights I'm joined now by city councilman Francisco Moya who represents those neighborhoods councilman Maria welcome to the program thank you for having me so we've heard about the racial disparity with the corona virus with it disproportionately affecting black and Latino residents those communities are over represented in the estimated death count according to the city's latest data have you seen that well yeah I mean look this is not nothing new for us I think I you know I've been on the ground since day one talking about how this is had a profound impact on the Latino community and the African American community for a few reasons one when that tidal waves just crashed on Elmhurst hospital I was on the phone with the CEO of the hospital are talking about what does that look like in terms of patient make up seventy percent of the impatience that came in those first few days were Latinos all from the surrounding community the reason why is because the majority of them are in the hospitality or service industry then they don't have the ability to telecommute from home they're the ones that are delivering our food well you know we're safe inside they are the ones that are manning the cash registers and stalking the aisles in our supermarkets I've they've been thrown into being this kind of front line support that has been keeping the city alive as we go through this process but they have been the hardest impacted by this because they have to work they have to be at their exposed to the elements which has created this problem for us yeah so what would you say right now are the primary concerns for people in your district do you think these fears and struggles that they have are are different than what people another pearls are grappling with yeah no I think it's it's it's it's more severe if you look at the statistics that are coming out for the borough of queens we are at close to thirty thousand they have been infected by covert seventeen hundred have died just in my district alone and one of the major problems that we're facing right now is the inability for people to bury their loved ones because they lack the money and they lacked their status so here in New York we have a program through HRA day provides a burial assistance but you need to have a social security number you know they give up to nine hundred dollars for burial and cremation but at the moment right now we have a lot of people in the Latino community there are undocumented we also have people they are poor and working class you can't afford this right now I'm asking and I've talked to the mayor and the city of New York I'm working with the our speaker Corey Johnson to expand that program so that we can bring some relief to families who will be able to afford to bury their loved ones as opposed to a seeing the images of people in mass graves at heart island this is what you see in in some war torn countries not what you're accustomed to seeing in New York City so consummate I'm sure you've worked for a lot of causes in your time there it's it's really sad that the because you're working for right now is to help people finance the burials of their loved ones look at it it's heartbreaking right these people are my friends they're my neighbors that my constituents that are crying out for help right now in a time where they can't even really grieve for the loss of their loved ones but you know this stemmed from a constituent that had reached out on behalf of a a young child who lost their mother due to covert nineteen the father is on a rest for on a ventilator won't know if they'll make it through the next week this child will be orphaned they don't have the money or the ability to pay for the burial the hospital is calling them saying you have to pick up the body they're not documented it just breaks my heart to know that this is what's happening and I think as a city we really need to push to get an expanded the program that would open it up for new Yorkers who are poor working class new Yorkers who like the affordability the status shouldn't matter you know we are all in this together I've reached out to my connections to the private sector to help with with some of the the the cost but my proposal is to get the city to changes policy expand that program and open it up for the most needy and most vulnerable in our time right now well keep up the good work councilman thank you so much for talking to us thank you thank you for having me that was councilman Francisco Moya he represents new York's twenty first city council district including his native corona
