Great Moments in Communication!
"Sure is easy today. A quick pair of thumbs can easily send a text to a friend email someone around the globe or place a call to order a pizza. Each time you do any of these things information is being transmitted from one place to another faster than you can say Trans Atlantic cable. Trends stop already there you can stop. But if you have learned anything from this show, you should know that it wasn't always this easy. A device called the Telegraph. Was the first big development in getting information from one point to another. It changed things dramatically because it was the first time information didn't have to be physically carried a letter on horseback a note on a boat, even a message in a bottle. These were a few of the only ways to tell someone in another place something anything. Imagine how different life was and imagine how revolutionary it must have been when an electric pulse could finally travel through a wire and deliver a message to that person much more quickly. British scientists, William Cook, and Charles. Manson created the First Commercial Telegraph. That wasn't all they dabbled in. We'd stint also invented a new kind of Concertina squeezy Reed instrument sort of like an accordion, as well as the stereo scope Victorian Parlor device that looked like a funny pair of binoculars and created three dimensional images out of. Pictures printed onto changeable cards. If you've ever used a view master toy, it was kind of like that. Anyway, their version of the Telegraph used multiple wires to carry electric pulses, which would move needles on the receiving end. These needles would point to the letters on a dial. This would slowly spell out the words of a message letter by letter in one sense, their version was nice because it required. No special. Code or a special understanding from the operator you just had to know how to read but installing the multiple wires was expensive, inconsistent and difficult. So soon, Samuel Morse's single wire telegraph became the international favorite because the message was on a single wire. It could only send one letter at a time and it didn't actually use letters but something to represent letters a required people to use a code known as Morse Code. Operators had to learn a new alphabet of short dots or debts and long dashes or does of the code to get each letter which they would translate. It wasn't immediate telegraphs took time to send and receive as the letter by letter codes had to travel along the wire, but it was still faster than trains, horses or running really really fast almost as soon as Morse's telegraph debuted in the eighteen forties someone was. Like Hey, we should put one of these in the ocean and send messages to Europe at the time to send a letter from New York to London usually took twelve days of sea travel that's not even factoring in the time on land, the letter would need to be carried. So communication took a long time Samuel Morse believed in his creation wanted it to make a difference. So he said great idea. Let me help. Turns out running a wire across the Atlantic. Ocean was a lot harder than you might think. Or. Maybe your a reasonable person and you realized immediately that this was a super difficult thing to do. It was especially. So in the eighteen hundreds either way there was a guy who with Sammy Morris help was going to see that it happened no matter what got in the way. Name was Cyrus field and he got rich in the paper business. It wasn't under Mifflin that he founded but another real and frightening paper company that sold newsprint to the Penny Press tabloid newspapers of New England. The company did so well that he retired at the age of thirty four as one of New York's richest men. With plenty of life. was he dedicated the remainder to the transatlantic cable a wire to stretch across the ocean settled on the bottom deep below the water? This marvel to be would carry electric signals and deliver international messages in Samuel Morse's special code both America and England loved the idea and pledged support and some money he sold stock in his New Telegraph Company to help raise funds but mostly he put up his own sweet sweet paper making money to get the project off the ground or I guess underwater. We'll spare you the super technical details mostly because we are kids, podcasters and not electrical engineers but telegraphic cable had to be over twenty six hundred miles long to stretch from Europe to North America, and every one of the twenty six hundred miles of cable had to be insulated and protected from the rocky bottom corrosion from the salty seawater and any marine life that may cause trouble. So it was coated in latex then tarred hemp and lastly wrapped in heavy iron braids is took months for giant teams to make. In eighteen fifty seven nearly two decades after Morse's Telegraph debut two ships sailed out from the coast of Ireland and started to unspoiled the gigantic telegraph cable to the bottom of the ocean the mood aboard the British ship HMS Agamemnon and the American ship USS Niagara was probably bubbling from excitement. Those aboard watched the first of the cable disappear into the mysterious ocean, they must have known they stood on the threshold of a new frontier ready to connect two continents as never before with the power of one seemingly magical. The VIBRATO. The line you mean the cable we have to stretch across the ocean for the next few months it's only the first day. Broken just flopping around at the bottom of the ocean. Okay. So after just a few miles had been unschooled, the would-be transatlantic cable snapped undeterred. The brave crews used grappling hooks to find the lost

What Man I'm GonNa Yard again? We should get a jukebox dude. Man Maybe a neon science as Darwin or something who just bit bomb hammocks big fan of quote. It is now about one o'clock and I intend sleeping in my hammock Hamic. I did so last night and experienced a most ludicrous difficulty getting into it. That's that's part of the deal with the HAMMOCK. Yeah it's amazing. This is Charles. Darwin never the boy just like we chill lacks a little bit. That my great fault of Jockeyship wasn't I'm trying to put my legs in. I you are this is the guy I guess. Hamic is where you come up with evolution. It is watch and Shit just like we're very similar. Lame diary last night was wild. Tried to get an Hammock feet first. No-go not the way the hammock being suspended I thus only succeeded seated in pushing away without making any progress in inserting my own body. Long Way of saying you can't get into a hammock. He cannot not get into his hammered. Love the game though. Finally the Beagle is ready to depart on the tenth of December. She set sail from Plymouth headed to but had ten. Everybody said it once. It'll help arith- grief R. I F. F. E. is re you're fucking stupid. Whoever that's literally one of the dumbest Davis belings Collared Reef? Dave is trying to say thank you for the correction. It's going to be the intermission intermission. It's that's GONNA find but keep in mind. Dave lives my president's great your country. We've got a good one Our country but as they as they sailed for the dumb named island bad weather came in the boat returned to Plymouth the next morning. Charles was hal about it. Still not figured out Hammett. His concern about Darwin is fairly like Darwin. It's just like it might be somebody nose day. Threes just still looking at the hammock confounded. Like what am I doing wrong. Got To get in this thing a while and harbor. He finally took action quote. My hammock after endless alterations has been made flat Okeydokey on the morning of the twentieth of December conditions. Were good for sailing. The Beagle should have been heading Out to sea but Charles said quote the sailors declare there is somebody on shore keeping a black cat under a TUB which it stands. The reason must keep us in harbour. I would ask what's happening but I don't think you know why this is happening. It's a crazy sailor's superstition though that you can't sale and there's a cat in a tub like you the cats underneath the TUB under atop. So how are you going to solve this. You take the cat out from under the TUB. Okay simple but for that day. You can't sale okay. We did obviously things. It'd be bad. Yeah many people die before they. I figured that out. None probably probably not. Yeah so the next day there is no cat tub issue cool. The biggest pulled anchor headed out and sailed straight into a rock. I'm starting to think that cat was still under that. Tub Journals. Quote the vessels stuck fast. Every maneuver was tried to get her off. The one that succeeded best was making every person on board run to different parts of the deck by this means giving the vessel a swinging motion. You know as soon as the ship is going down. Josh's like help me with the HAMMOCK. Somebody help let me get over here. We're going to save the HAMMOCK. Get it get it. The Beagle is finally freed and sailed back to Plymouth again good adventure so far so they set out again in the morning Charles woke and was confused quote stokes and myself look a pocket compass which we agreed was bewitched for pointed to northeast instead of to where we were sailing in. West by south are doubts. Cleared up by Whitman Wickham putting his head in and telling us we should be in plymouth sound in the course of an hour. The wind at apparently changed overnight in Plymouth. They dropped anchor. I'll tell you what though the anchor and got tangled in a chain and they drop her eight hours to fix okay so so. The biggest remained in Plymouth is just nail it to the the twenty fifth because it was Christmas. The officer and Charles went a short time but the crew remained on the Beagle because they weren't allowed to leave Charles on his return to the ship quote. The whole of it has been given up to revelry at present. There's not a sober man on the ship. King is obliged to perform a duty of century the last sentinel came staggering below declaring when he would no longer stand on duty and he is now in irons. The following morning conditions were perfect for sailing. That's not good but they could not because so many of the crew were locked in irons or hung over. Do they leave on the twenty seventh. The Beagle headed out and got past the rock. Well Dave already not good and was finally on its way to ten reef over. Don't over the next days. Men were flogged for their Christmas party and Charl was seasick but the big goal was finally off on its voyage right and now we take Are Twenty minute capitalists break so people can make money and the artist can suffer right back all right now. We find out if Darwin got the HAMMOCK. Good amount it. Everyone Nice and drunk all right there we go. That's why we do it. The ship arrived at what's been happening seriously. The ship finally left member point. Is that the ship left member. It was in Portsmouth the swimmer that I remember. They were in Portsmouth for over a month. This is a story of a Hammock. I'll be honest. The definitely had beers. Yes take the ship arrived at ten A.. Wreath on these sixth of January Charles was in awe at the beauty of the coast. He was about to study. Okay Dander the harbor and we're about to drop anchor. When they went back to Plymouth they had to they had a two vessel officials approached and told them because there was a cholera outbreak? In England they had twelve days. Quarantine Fitzroy sailed off noting. It was a quote real real calamity for Darwin. What does that mean micheals? Darwin was so excited they get to stay.

Uh Very few people mostly just dramatic tribes of people called the few engines. Okay now Fugen's ends is. Actually an English made up name that was applied to different tribes. A proper name for the Robert came across is the Yagan's so they just they just call them so because they were like we don't want to go talk to them. They're the foodwise SAGAS. Should we ask them what they're called Nunu we've already named it. The flotsam stumbles there are traditionally nomads and hunter gatherers. They travelled by canoe between islands to collect food. The men handed see lines while the women dove to get shellfish. Okay this was a true Luke clash of civilizations. Robert was from the upper class of the wealthiest in England and most industrial country of the time. And the Yagan again. We're some of the poorest and least advanced people in the world as a love story where they're gonNA end up together. This is the meet cute. It is the meet cute. I feel like this is where it ends. The egg started to steal everything they could from the crew smart. Yeah they're like what the fuck. This is just awesome. Should just as you know they would often shoot stones using slings okay. This would try to bribe them with gifts interesting when they're robbing you. What if we gave you something but they would give them something? And then the Yagan's didn't understand. It was a bribe. Then we'll just be like I want more stuff right if they thought some Geoghegan's where to threatening the crew would fire shots to scare them away so relations between the gains the crew. The Beagle were pretty much completely confusing. Sure tents to her. On the fifth of February eighteen thirty a small party was serving at Cape desolation whose naming these wearables it might have been pringle. Oh Pringle Oh yes yes that makes sense. They were sleeping in their tents when members of one of the tribes stole their whaleboat in two thirds of their supplies. Okay so that's quite a rip so these guys are starving and they have no way to get back to the Beagle so the men created a canoe out of wicker canvas and clay. That's let's see bound for sure ready to go. They say clamp the boat. It's better than I. That was me I'd be like well. I guess that's it. Yeah without question. Yeah Good Luck with that boy. I don't think that's GonNa work out so two of them paddle all day and night to the ship to seek help and would fitzroy sought he disdainfully awfully called it a basket not very empathetic. Yeah well we're alive in a very fancy dea. Yeah so Fitzroy is fucking live it. He could not believe. Some local quote savages had the audacity and ability to take his whaleboat fuck in English guys. Well boats great. It's great though. I mean he's fucking he's a a son of a Lord. I don't think they can handle. You can handle some some random native stake in his boat. Ashton Kutcher uses Demi Moore drama to direct fans to app
"That may I finally unleash the entire theory I have over Ashton Kutcher yes do a ninety bag today man okay so yesterday we learned a little bit about what was in demi Moore's autobiography and some of the things she says about Ashton Kutcher are really really not flattering to him and we had wondered like how do you think he feels about this yeah right and we thought maybe he had signed off on it and I said look we'll give it a couple minutes we'll see what he says like when maybe he's interviewed well do you we didn't have to wait that long but the way that he responded to it is the debate EST bag thing he could have possibly done okay tell me what he tweeted yesterday. he tweeted I was about to push the button on a really snarky tweet when I saw my son daughter and wife and I deleted it now you might call all good for him you know we practice self control. number one I would say by tweeting about not tweeting about it he's tweeting about that's just like one of those things like I was about to say something really mean that's where you learned aren't used aren't I lucky that you didn't say something mean thank you. that is like that is a high level passive aggression that you learn from Minnesotans but he's also from Iowa so close enough okay so don't do well exactly clearly I'm but then it goes on any treats the following. for truth text me whites and they need Texas out a number which I'm gonna say because he tweeted out and I can say it and guess what don't tweet it okay and I'll tell you why the texter don't sorry I don't tax it he said he puts this like one three one nine five one nine zero five whatever you can look it up if you want to six thank you. if you tax that do you know what happens I do because I've done it before what. you get eight invitation. to the community. what's the community. it's his like social networks yeah didn't we do this so I'm glad you were gullible enough to fall for it and then you started getting some spam I. in you know what's really okay so here's actually interesting here some insider information on that like I got that text back that was basically like join the community blah blah blah and they didn't do anything with that just about three weeks ago I started getting pestered again no not even probably like a week ago that number started tweeting you're texting me back again. join the community get to spend time with Ashton Kutcher could get to know the real him so obviously like it when the latent for a hot second and now they're trying to re embark on this stupid journey. to get to know Westing good no actually. I've never wanted to get to know Ashton Kutcher. in you know what's it like this is the part that really gives. what I love about this is so trashy and it is easy so like he's always I think Ashton Kutcher has always modeled himself a sort of like Leo de Caprio junior like he's you know it's that Hollywood man syndrome we got a circle HMS Hollywood man's HMS Ashton Kutcher he to suit exactly more like anyway full of hot air and gas blue blue what it does say was. he he's like I'm gonna spend thirty million dollars on a social media happens really transform my friend even one muscularity slim around like two beliefs trying to disrupt the whatever well over and basically it's like no dude you just can't get a real job in Hollywood so you're like sitting around with your over paid you know privileged cronies you know. trying to come up with excuses for your sad I mean it's. but also to use this moment when demi Moore has like I mean many of the headlines about demi Moore and her autobiography are. at Jack yeah including but not limited to the story she tells about I'm essentially being brokered for sex work by her mother yeah and the miscarriage she suffered at the at six months of practice and really like the death of her child it is that is a state that is essentially a stubborn and Ashton Kutcher wants to take this moment to promote his social network. through her painful sharing of her story. that tells me so much about who Ashton Kutcher is it confirms for me a lot of the crap she said about him in that both course and it just it wasn't all that he's gone for we already know which is it he's a D. bag because you can just smell it the way that he interacts with the world around him that it just comes across very like patronizing and very sort of looked on the nose and again you know look demi Moore I'm glad that she's sharing their stories and they are personal and

"Having your in studio is a guest and Johnny sap. I've never asked you to sing. But I'm sure if we called on you. Great. I was in the HMS pinafore the Admiral. Yes, I have. Yes. Get that on video. No, this was like nineteen seventy five at the video exists back. Then that's a travesty. She's got the photos from the FBI. Yes. They're on me at the age of twelve. So now, we've got the next segment of the show. And I almost hate to even bring it up because it's just adding fuel to the fire, but may two losses in the practically Brady surpassed you right? Yeah. I mean loss against Miami. Which is still really tough to fathom. How that happened? You know, they had the lead that a fair point lead. And the dolphins had the ball on thirty one yard line with seven seconds left as there's no chance they're going to win that game the dolphins. Right. When they do the multiple multiple lateral which worked at gronkowski on the field, which will be on the field for hill. Mary Ryan tannehill was not gonna reach on from his own thirty one yard line. And then you back it up even five yards. He's not throwing the ball. Seventy five yards down the field because one plane. Maybe one play up to midfield along the sideline. Then you try a hail Mary. So that that game I think maybe had some carryover affecting against Pittsburgh here. And now here they are nine and five there the three seed in the AFC if they can win the last two games in the Texans lose one of their last two than the patriots would be the two seed, which means a by home playoff game win that they wanted the AFC championship game. But you're right. You're just kind of saying the end of the dynasty. There. Brady's all done. Brady's numbers in December. This year are better than his career in December. Maybe the test is he hasn't looked white as good because he's through a really bad interception against the Steelers in the red zone Sunday. And then he forgot that they had no timeouts left at the end of the first half against Miami. But those are just judgment. His body is complete although Mike Giardi one of ours. Yesterday on touch and rich. He he thinks the Brady's dealing with an issue. So that could be problematic, especially when you forty one heals quickly. But you know, what I mean, I think again, you know, the NFL is always at this time of the year. There's this upset certain teams have guys out of the game completely others. Yeah. The play is a beaten up a little bit. But the biggest thing is they need to establish a running game. You know what I mean? Because you just can't go back some pressure off of because I mean, you get gronkowski who is blocking great. I mean, I don't know. Whether you've noticed his blog young just can't get it. Open downfield giving them a lot of attention. Made some people say, oh, he's not moving smoothly as you used to. That's the beta bottle, but they give him a lot of attention. So now Brady's gotta get confidence. In either going to Jordan going to whole gammit HOGAN almost never gets tired and the big play against the Steelers. And now Josh Gordon is done with the patriots because announced early today stepping away from the team to deal with his mental health. And he was all the rumors are the rumors and reports from the likes of Ian Rapoport in Tom pulsar, oh, the NFL network that this has to do with his drug testing had failed another test. And now he's out of the picture. That's a major bright and just kind of weird. I mean, they got forty catches out of him in eleven games. Seven hundred twenty yards three touchdowns pretty good production. But you knew this was a ticking time bomb, he's got issues mental health issues, and he's got to deal with and when they acquired him for fifth round pick. He kind of knew that is he gonna even last full season. Yeah. So unlike last year, there's no and Dollah women Dolan Mars. Yeah. That's right. Very good. Very good. And then the other receiver winter the rain and cooks, so now's less for Tom Brady gronk who's a shell of himself. You gotta Edelman who's thirty two coming off that knee surgery from last year. He's looked good this year, but not like Julian Edelman of two or three years ago. He's thirty two years old, and quite frankly beat up the running game hasn't been really good the last few weeks. So there's a lot that Brady's trying to process their this three games this year guys with his score ten points. You have to go back to the previous hundred. In fifty games where they had three games where they didn't score ten points. I mean three times this year against Detroit, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, ten points. You never seen the patriots more ten points in a game. You're going to get into the twenties. Right. And they've had some problems on offense the defense still leaks, but still they're nine and five and if they can win these two games down the stretch, which they showed against buffalo and the jets eleven and five and then you just root for the eagles against the Texans on Sunday. Because of the eagles beat the Texans and the patriots could still be the number two seat, which means get a bye bye. And then they would play in Foxborough in the division around. Yep. A team to be determined later. And then if they're able to win that game then they're onto the AFC championship game. I still think and I've been saying this all year even in the off season. I think the chargers are the best team in the AFC. Kansas City last week. I think the most complete team the most pro bowlers seven so top to bottom. They have a really good roster. But everyone always expects the chargers to do something stupid season and implode, but their rosters loaded, and and I think that they're going to be the AFC champions. But if Kansas City wins the last two games the chargers would be the wildcard. So they'd have to win three games on the road. Yeah. Get to the Super Bowl. But of course, they don't really have a home field advantage. They play in a soccer stadium and Carson sitting -fornia which holds twenty seven thousand. Stadium. God the Rams are building this five billion dollar palace right in both play play there. Yeah. Stain. Frankie valley is one of the richest men in the country. The wall for that kind of pretty much point. Let me think about that. That's a big wall. Yeah. Nine thousand nine hundred seventy two miles. Who's ever going to be in one thousand nine hundred seventy two mile wall? Yeah. Critical points this, but I digress. No, no, look, I I've often said though, with the president that go from sports the politics that like if you're the Democrats a piece him with this. Okay. We're going to go along with this Mr President. But here's what we want to use it as negotiators tool. But you know, what infrastructure Democratic Party has bought so much into the sanctuary city thing. And you know, they'll fight him. If he was gonna give everybody free cable. Get bigger than that is. I think they realize the Texas is very close from having been a red. Yes. And it's on its way to being a blue state, and that's all about demographics. It's all about, you know, new new new Americans coming in south of the border. Ted Cruz won the Senate seat by four percentage points better. Rox shows you that Texas is on the verge of perhaps being a purple state, right? And it also shows you that eighty million dollars can buy you a lot of votes if it right spent twice what Ronald Reagan spent to be president to be president in one thousand nine hundred thirty five million dollars keep in mind tip O'Neill promise Reagan, border security, back in their early eighty s took at the amnesty deal. It's awful. So we've we've heard the whole just let us go right now. We'll get it. Right. Check in the mail ever. Obama talked about it. Yeah. State of the union, but talked about it, right? It's your talk for the Democratic Party is pivoted to where they're putting so much of an investment in this idea of new Americans with others. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Got to go whole hog with do away with ice sanctuary. Friends of mine liberal friends of mine. And when I bring that up there like oh my God. I can't believe you're saying that I said we'll work with them negotiate with him. That's what he likes to do policies. Maybe not what the wall, but she more apt to negotiate with them. Then Paul Ryan, I think they're actually going to have a good relationship. Because again, they come from the same generation. His her husband is a builder is someone who owns a lot of the president's going to be intrigued by. We're living in the day and age now where with all the technology that goes into politics and people on mailing lists and people in social media and political consultants it's all geared towards raise money. So if she went down that path she would just follow her. Yeah. I think she can get a lot of things done by negotiating with them. We had to decisions last week with by federal judges one of which was out of Texas that said ObamaCare was unconstitutional. The other one was out of Washington that said the deportation was was wrong. And which one did they cover? Yeah. They covered the deportation that, you know, we'll be appealed as he's appealed every single one and one on that end absolutely right now. I mean, even the idea of the riots in France, and for that matter Belgium and other places, you know, things looking pretty shaky over in western Europe that doesn't get any coverage of the channels. It's it's very limited in terms of. Okay. There's writing, but they never drilled down. You know, these are some of the ramifications of of open borders and all the migrants coming in refugees from France has always been ready willing and able to protest them a decade ago when they were going to take away a holiday from the French workers, and they protested they got their holiday back. It's one of those countries that you the people the government fears the people not the other way around. I think we're still government kind of a bottom up. Right. Yeah. So it's just like you're taking our holiday away. We're going to speak up about. That's a good point. But think about the initial reason for the the rioting and the demonstrating the diesel fuel tax that they've got on. And it does go to the point of the climate warming and so forth. But people get to the point where they feel like, hey, I'm not going to be able to pay my mortgage. I'm not gonna be in Europe. It's they sell gasoline by the leader. So it to about eight dollars a gallon. So we think paying high. Fuel prices here. We're paying nothing compared to what they on your now. The cars are made to deal with that the Fiat's. Yeah. Get your forty miles a gallon or whatever. But the other thing is if you look at one of the things that set off all the rioting in France was a big tax on diesel fuel right by mccrone. And that was part of the whole Paris agreement that we pulled out exactly that affected all of the drivers over there. All the truck drivers and people trying to make a living. Anybody trying to get to their job all on a non binding agreement to make himself which you signal to the world. He had a back off of it. Because Paris was starting to turn to flaming city in the argument from those demonstrating would be the elites they've got enough money. They don't have to worry about the day to day making ends meet in so easy for them to be there. Like, the plastic bag, Ben. And again, I'm signing more conservative lately. But in terms of that that's an issue that I think I wrote a column about a couple of years ago about the plastic bag been does not work ban. Plastic bag down that doesn't work because what happens is after an internal person myself has fifty five, you know, we're all kind of in the same age group would you use plastic bags for after you use them to throw trash out? Now, if you don't have those available when you need to put your trash in plastic bags, you're buying that that sounds high and mighty to say, well, let's just banned plastic bags because they're bad from the environment. Yeah, that's true. But also cutting down trees is bad for the environment back to paper bags. Also, these canvas bags that they make you buy. They're not really safe. Terry chicken. In the next time. You put vegetables in the third time you put beef and all of a sudden you've got cross contamination. That's not healthy. So it's and I really delved into this. Because Austin was one of the first cities that did this, and it didn't work it doesn't work. It sounds great. But all of a sudden in who's at a tax on the poor and the elderly, right? And again at the end of the day, it hurts people, and it doesn't help the environment. It's only five woman who you know, when she goes and gets her four bags at market basket, usually those four bags to throw a trash out or whatever. And now she's going to have to spend three four bucks on heavier trash bags that are worse for the environment. One of the other things I had seen was the coverage. I think it was stop at shop. They're charging five cents a paper bag, but they're donating the money to the state..
