"Must be a big tree to, uh, big and very, very, very strong. Whose roots were still in the ground? Yeah, despite the really wet soil. Yeah. So I guess it could have been worse for everybody in that situation. And when a hurricane pushes seawater onshore, you never know what might come with it. Family in Louisiana, surveying the damage to their neighborhood found a surprising new neighbors swimming in the flood waters. A dolphin Amanda Huling said she first spotted the Dolphins swimming in the flood waters of her slide L neighborhood on Monday, and it was still swimming around her house on Tuesday, fueling said she'd been in contact with a rescue group that is planning to attempt to relocate the dolphin. If it doesn't Find its way out of the flooded neighborhood within the next few days. Another one of these weird angles coming out of these stories, flooding going to look out your window and you see, a fin is being covered Annual could be a lot worse again in that situation, right? It could be a shark. I mean, you never know, right? It could be literally anything. So you see that Finn and I'm sure that little disconcerting, Which is some of these things fascinate me about about the when a hurricane comes ashore relate that, especially in Louisiana. Because of the wind and and and and I can't relate to all of it Living in suburban New Jersey. Yeah, so I can't fully understand the forces of nature. But I'm always amazed when we see the reports that the Mississippi River starts flowing the other way. Write like the wind and storm surges so strong That now the river is flowing north in some spots, which you can see how you know a dolphin could be carried out of the gulf up the Mississippi River and into a flooded neighborhood. Yeah, yeah, that's that's you know, just incredible. That's.

"Who have read the book and those that haven't talked about what's in that a scientific fact. That is the scientific fact. That's awesome now. I also know as an author that there are a bunch of people that have it. that didn't read it but we won't talk about that right now. I wonder is two things i want. I want i for you. Tell us about the four disciplines corporate briefly. Of course. But then i wanna talk about what. What changed what's different. So but i what ra- quickly for people that haven't or for people that have slept since they read it. What are the four disciplines. You must know me well. Because you've emphasized three times briefly. That i have a history of long answer so i'm going to actually be true to what you've asked me to do. So therefore of these things that are easy to remember. And for everybody. If you're if you're pausing for a moment you want to write these down. I'm gonna give you a simple way to catch these four ideas. I still would like to buy the book if you don't mind. I have children going to college. And all that. But but but i give you the four ideas only take a second so before this execution or based on four universal timeless principles number. One is focused so the very first discipline is to focus on the wildly important. And can i know that's a cheesy name. I've often regretted it myself. But you know it gets it gets in the brain. It gets people's attention and the reason we chose. That name is because everything you and. I think we're doing right now. We think it's all important so in order to separate out the thing that matters most we had to call it something different to wildly important. So so here's an idea that will hold in the mind better than my words. Imagine every single person listening to this is really like an air traffic controller. And whether you're driving your car or your work or your home making breakfast you're listening to this podcast..

"I don't think so either you to go back. The doctors are the people for whom there's an there's nothing but healing. That's all i think about this. All i care about the people who should be therapist counselors and and business people are those for whom you know. At least that is the driving. Pull in their life to go to that. Because anything else dabbling in anything else. Can i say this is. Oh really wasn't authority. Even though i'm not is number one if you dabble your way through life you never got to be happy. Never gonna be completely happy and check at. You're probably never going to do anything of great significance so why not find the thing for yourself. That is your thing you know the thing that makes you want to get up in the morning and do it that thing. That's that would be a message. When ewing hats you never would reach your wildly important goals breath just saying very nice guy this book before disciplines of execution. It's been out for a number of years. And as i said. Now you're you're out. Touring the world of podcasts. Talking about it because we're in the second edition have any books. That have a second edition. So i got a lot to learn here but i want to ask you this question. So it's been. I don't remember when the i i i should have done my homework. Gone over to my eleven years ago. Thank you. I should have looked at the original. Copyright what do you think has led to the success of this book. Yeah i love this question. And i feel my answer now not just coming from my mind but maybe come from my heart as well kim. I think everybody struggles with execution. You know our our first edition and second edition are really written with a predominant thought of leaders of teams mostly in the business or nonprofit segment. But you know the principles apply to our personal lives. They apply to our parenting apply to everything we tried to do. So they they are powerful in that sense but with to come back to your question. I think everybody struggles with it you know. There's a reason that new year's resolutions are a cliche dawson. your new year's resolution and they rolled her eyes and say it february yet. Talk to me on the twenty two january right. We have a long history of this so so in other words this book the your both the original and even better in the new one provide what we believe is the best answer we know to. Why is that. And how do i change so okay so now i have to ask a question. You challenge me to ask questions. Don't ask you so. I almost chuckled. When i said we're talk to an expert at execution because you know there's a whole other definition of execution. Why did you think execution instead of implementation. Because i find myself using the word implementation because i sometimes get stuck on that word execution is just curious greg's question wrong with the word execution of course if there was a conscious choice there one or the other. Well let me. I'll do my best to express it but do you mind ten seconds to tell you one of my favorite examples. Is i gave a keynote speech on the four disciplines in bogota colombia and the billboard outside the stadium where i was going to be speaking said jim hewlett chief executioner. True story hand heart true story chief executioner so there have been times when i've wondered about this name but i'll tell you what i like about this. If for example we said disciplines not principles ideas practices and we said execution not just dabbling. You know. I think it's an edgier word a stronger word that you go out and you do it an- not to not to say that as a heavy thing for people hearing us but to say our book from page one to page three hundred..

He's a husband father of two grandfather of three. He's our guest today. His name is jin jim ruling. Jim welcome thank you kevin cut. What a great introduction you even. I was getting a little interested in what i had to say. Thank you i say. Thank you for the introduction that my mother wrote right bad day listen. We're going to talk about this book the four disciplines of execution. And especially now the one that has this little blue stripe across the top says second edition revised and updated. But we'll get to all of that when you were ten years old jim. You probably didn't say. I'm going to be a ceo. You probably didn't say i'm gonna write a selling number. One wall street journal bestselling book with two editions. Like none of that was on your radar when you pretend i'm guessing so my question to you is tell us about your journey. Like sorta quickly. How did you end up where we are today. Gosh what a great question you know. I've only known you a little bit although as we said a moment ago. We're already friends. But i was expecting today to be full of unique questions and i love that. So thank you for starting there and you did emphasize the short version. Because you know. I'm i'm an older guy so i could take all day go through the whole purpose. This is a remarkable journey. Podcast and kevin podcast. That you should have a second. Podcast kevin my team. Say that's a bad idea kevin. I do want to tell you though man. I am so honored to be on this podcast. I mean your your world class and the world the podcast. You're in the top tier. And i feel very special today. Because i get to have a conversation with you so thank you and to go right to your question you know. I have an answer that you may not be expecting. I actually started my life as an artist. I was a musician played in all the rock and roll bands and worked my way basically through college singing and playing in bands and and well. I don't know you know there is a song about that. I won't quote it on your podcast but the but you know. I had a blast and i literally loved the aspect of expression. Even after i graduated college. I went and lived in new york for a while pursued a career for a very short time as a professional singer and and then really had a life changing moment and the interesting thing is that life changing moment. I wanted my life to be about something other than just music at a very wise professor. Who said to me once if you can do anything other than music and be happy. You should do that because the only people who can survive in the arts because it's a difficult and challenging career are the people for whom there is nothing else so so i made a change went into business. I got into what was in those days. The emerging field of computer science. Can you imagine with back to school. Got another degree in computer science and went on to start at what really turned out to be a forty three year career in business. Working my way up through the it. Ranks i became cio of a couple of world class companies huge corporations. I ended up being ceo of a technology company for eleven years..

"To them you know and and if they wanna call themselves. The flying eagles and put pictures of eagles all over their scoreboard and hanging in the break room where everybody can see it. All of that just influences the way. The team plays the game of winning. At the goal so discipline three is to create a compelling scoreboard and then last of all disciplined for is the discipline of accountability but not accountability in the traditional sense. In other words on all of us have lived and worked in environments where accountability me to my boss right. And if you and. I are on the same team i may. I may even care a little bit about you but as long as me and my boss sir okay. I'm not worried about you. Well indisciplined four. We build a different kind of accountability. We build an accountability to each other and it turns out people will perform at an entirely different level to avoid letting down their team than they will to simply please their boss so we said that really fast one was about focus too was about leverage finding the behaviors that actually drive results three was about engagement creating a scoreboard that makes people want to play this game and then four accountability the discipline of accountability but becoming accountability to each other. Not just to your boss. Those four things in a package are the behaviors and the principles that drive extraordinary results as you know. Three hundred thousand teams all over. The world are using this process right now and achieving incredible results from really big companies down to really small ones. Okay yeah there's a ton of stuff we're going to dig into. Indenture sure but before we do we have to think blue shift for their support of marketing over coffee if your wildly important goal includes revenue growth or improving customer experience and really what marketers doesn't the lead measures to learn more about blue shifts smart hub. You is the best way to put your data to work not to sleep so again. Check it out. Over a blue shift. Dot com slash mo. And we thank them for their support. The show the wildly important goal. That you get you get that. That's pretty common. For most marketing people but the second discipline of acting on leading indicators versus lagging indicators. I think that's something that all marketing people miss completely. You know. so many people look at it with low sales and what was the attendance at the event. And all these after things so talk to us more about finding those leading indicators point especially in sales sales is a beautiful laboratory for studying all aspects of human performance. Isn't it in fact. It might be the purest laboratory in terms of the relationship between action result so close in the sales organization. I love using that as an example. So let's say every sales person in the world has a goal to make more sales in an oversimplified example. And so you know your boss gives you this number and usually in fairness to most bosses. They don't tell you how to achieve that goal. They kind of expect you to figure that part out right and so what most people do is they try to achieve a goal especially a big goal by sheer effort. They do everything they can think of. And they do everything in the best way that they possibly can and they they literally just on this massive attack plan hoping that in there somewhere are some things that really work now. I don't mean to put the whole world into one column john but we both know that most of the time we ended up missing the goal we set and we end up being exhausted. And maybe a little disillusion. That i worked so hard i got almost no results for so in forty x we reverse that completely. We say before you do anything. Study your process. What is it that actually drives most of your results. You know the pareto principle twenty percent of what we do produce his that turns out to be true so in other words why focus on the other eighty percent. Why not find the twenty percent. That's a real driver of the results you want and then put all your energy in that. Become world class at that. That's the key we call it leverage you know let me put in one x energy and get back three x result instead of one x two one x and john. If we have a ticket. I'll give you a couple of examples because the people listening they may say okay. I guess that conceptually. But how does that apply so so. Here's here's several examples that might illustrate this now. We worked with the largest hotel company in the world as you know for the last twelve. You're still our largest client anywhere in the world today. And one of the keys to their success at improving guest satisfaction was creating a world class first impression. How do you create a world class first impression on you probably have. Can you tell me ten days but it turns out in the hotel world that most of the first impression gets created by a the warmth of the greeting first of all. Did you even get a greeting or did we say hey. Do you have a reservation. But if somebody said hello and welcome to our hotel. We're so glad you're here. How can i help you today. Whatever that is that really drives the first impression and the second is speed of checking. It takes me an our to check in. I don't care how nice the hotel not having a good so in other words if you were a hotel manager and guest satisfaction matter to you which it does. You might start by saying. We'll what all i care about is let's get off to a great start so i would instill the action in my front desk team of creating a world greeting and having the fastest possible check in experience i could. I put my energy there. And not in the seventy three other. I don't need a bottle of cold water. And i don't need to change the air freshener in the lobby. And i don't. I don't need all that. I can do all that but i need to really put my energy into these two things. I want to move the number. The same thing is to in sales. We go right back to the heart of where you started me. Every every sales person in the world knows that a customer interactions or the way to sale whatever business. You're in good grief. But let's say in a traditional sales role where you're making face to face meetings with the more in franklin covey. We know the more time we spend face to face with our clients the better servants. We are to them and the more stuff they buy. And there's nothing mercenary about that. That's just how the formula worked people buy from other people. Well yes so. In other words one lead measure might be simply increase the number of face to face hours you have with clients every week. Suppose we went from average of three face to face hours to twelve face-to-face hours. That alone would drive the results. But what if we also said. I wanna have world-class face to face and whatever that meant to you. Maybe that meant. I had an agenda. I sent out ahead of time. Maybe that means you have a follow up email. i always do. Maybe it means. I'm one hundred percent. Whatever i committed to do during the face to face meeting with you. i actually do. What a novel idea you. So in other words the key is finding the most predicted actions or behaviors that drive the go and put your chips on those numbers. On the roulette wheel put a bet that if we become world class and those two things we will drive sales even if we don't become world class at everything else we're doing it makes sense the way i've said it so far. Yeah yeah absolutely. No that does and that is such a key point of you need to find those things that indicate before the deal is done. You know because you're staying in front of it. 'cause there's just no value to sitting back and looking at the numbers and i done now. We finally have our list of what. We're gonna do q three.

"Yeah and those ships move in a twodimensional plane rather than three dementia says they should have just been picked off like flies by those admittedly very cool looking imperial walker's i mean it was it sort of hoff 20 it's definitely a call back to heart which i don't have a problem with ed it looked really cool not this getting back to the weaponization of hyperspace there was when i had a problem with him sacrificing general hul though that such a high level person would the number two person in your resistance is the person to kill is the person's going to sacrifice and there was a moment when it was the second time i saw the movie when when whole doses to princess leia she says someone needs to stay back in and pilot the ship i wanted to be a beat and both of them to look over three peo that would that would have been a joke land i look and this was a recurring theme throughout the movie is just the tossing off of theoretically major characters do you have snow cruise been built up in the first movie who gets his brief little i'm emperor palpa team at the end of return of the jet i moment accept i'm wearing might my hugh hefner gold robe guard small has an afterthought yeah he's got just totally guide ler malt and then yeah my final point is is i just the most heartbreaking thing for me of all of this is is well we know there's going to be lay in the next movie so she's gonna have to be written out i don't feel that luke really got his exit it didn't feel really good to me but the most heartbreaking thing was that the belief that han died for a purpose in a force awakens and you find out no he didn't in this movie he died for nothing he did not save kylo ren he did not help kylo ren kylo ren is just a dick and that sadden me to no end.

"And that's why i like the picks but everyone we were like which one would you graham right now yeah consistently the answer was the picks i mean a lot of people wrong any really planet character this episode is a stage lighting material that this idolised now if you're on clay i got i won't be lows talking about something i was watching uh ashley play with the uh portugal came on the front and i kind of like tried to photo bomb her photo a little bit and she switches over to this remote editors blacks me all of our words are you your requirement of what you think the porsche mode and the selfie mode is fine i mean fine further look a selfie doesn't have to be the best photo in the world if i look good man as i came out and as i consider if the backgrounds blared in the attended by me you're okay but you're at age lay who now that that jets barrel i never takes over in the lyon odds so when we review the eight has like this is going to be everywhere i've seen it zero t because it's bad for you senior on yours i mean my feet is mostly pictures of other people heavy apart part of it is not a lot of people the eight or eplus because most of the people that would bought it in september have waited for the ten but the other parties it looks bad play good tan just like hey i know not like dan name something you like i love the display of the eye for note of pro a complete product you're longest pena backups yep universe glorious a most oreos but there's no one life is not so subtle hits uh but like others states lighting is like one of those things where it's like i can't believe you are listening to this show in you think that i'm the cranky one i just want you to know that i am at welltempered every day and much of it and safer amac crankier just want things to be better and dan sit across from paul i and it sears they like home improvement fence outlet like her of like what what you guys get hyped above all girl general hul girl deflate the height bubble fired all right we've got hurt her cut into the end here.
