Former Rep. Dave Brat Talks About the Intersection of Free Market and Faith
"Yep. Yep. By the supply curve and the demand curve are both curves that involve human beings who are both fallen. But also made the image of God. The creation story right on the gate were created as co creators with God almighty, made in God's image, just something to think about. But what that means, go YouTube that one. And so we have that creative ability to create jobs and commerce to serve our neighbors, our brothers and our sisters. The hebrews were great business folks. Then the tradition continues with Jesus and the New Testament and the outwork of that. Jesus begins with a band of 12 around him. To go out and preach the gospel to the ends of the earth and in 300 years, the Holy Roman Empire and Constantine Constantine turns emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the Christian empire. So just shocking turnaround. And so what what people don't get is that tradition that judeo Christian tradition is responsible for our dignity as human beings. There's no other source that you can name the enlightenment project failed terribly on that. Jefferson and et cetera they could never name an alternative source for the dignity that is inherent in us. And so that is what undergirds the free market system. And then we're triply blessed with all that plus James Madison and the constitution and the rule of law and then Adam Smith and free markets, but the irony is you need the law to be a free people. And so the left gets utopian at times and they just say, you know, let's just make it up as we go marks. There's no need for God. There's no need for this rule of law. There's no need for human rights, all these ideas that exist in the air, are fake. No, they're not fake. They're responsible for the greatest civilization on earth. And it's our detriment that we lose those foundational pieces that set up the free market system that now serves us so

You're a single mom of four children and these crazy mandates and restrictions that have put restaurants in the New York City area through such agony. And I've watched it. I witnessed it last winter. I couldn't believe it with people trying to put tense out in the streets with karashi heaters. This whole thing has been a nightmare. So walk us through your story, Irene and tell us why you're challenging New York and tell us how these requirements have impacted Kellogg's diner in Brooklyn. So I first want to let everybody know that I'm not against of this vaccine or any vaccine that can save lives. But I don't want to be forced to take this vaccine or force anybody to take a vaccine. They don't want to put in their body. Now, these mandates, like you asked me, what have they done to me? The first man dates there was no protection put on us. So once these lockdowns were taken off. We started getting suit because we defaulted in our contracts. We couldn't afford all these big rents that we had or these mortgages that we had because we had no business. We were only doing delivery and takeout. We weren't doing the volume that we normally do on without a pandemic happening. Nowhere near it. We're even close to that. All we could afford at the time was food bills and payroll, and if so, like, it was horrendous. I didn't have the option to put tables outside. Very little. I had a little driveway. You know, I'm on top of a train station. I'm on a corner that is so dangerous and intersection. So I didn't even have that option that others also had to even, you know, do some business outside. Right. Everything was just take out and delivery for me. It was very difficult. I now face 1.4 judgment. Against

"My teeth to get into the industry like low budget stuff rubber monster movies rubber mass monster movies that i kind of grew up on so even though a lot of people like eight. Those movies that i've made recently. I love him to death. Like they're my favorite of the bunch in many ways. because i'm like this is me being experimental. This is me plan like the kid. I never really got to be because right away. People were like you're born voice of a generation. Say some things. And i was like all right Mall rats and like that so Chasing amy and they liked that very much then other ed dogma and they liked that very much dogma came with a lot of pressure a lot of right wing folds some religious votes threatened my life and my and my kids live my wife's live and all my friends lives and seven. A funny thing went to very serious very very quickly. So after that i was like look is wanna make a movie after this were nobody gets mad at me. Nobody pulls out a statue of mary and rubs at my face and says a rosary at me. Because i'm going to hell because they think my movie is is the pathway to to the devil as we'll make something fun and so i may. Jane saw bob strike back and that movies so drastically different from clerks mallrats chasing amy dogma because those movies clerks mallrats chasing amy and dogma. That's my entire life laid out across four movies. Everything i learned and loved was passionate about like that was all in me when i was able to start my career as a filmmaker and by the time he gets a dogma like i was like this is this is the ball's easiest thing i'll ever say plow and put it out there and then you know there is a threat of violence so at that point i was like well. I don't wanna say anything important because that gets one in trouble so let me. Just say something. That won't offend anybody. Let me just have a good time. Let me you know we. We made four moves. It was kind of a celebration. Jade's alabama back kinda like unfair. Maybe early. I know a lot of people. When they saw the movie back in the day they were like this is like a youtube. Fan film may by fan and it was a big fan of my movies. And that's what style bob strike back is. It's like me gone. We made four movies. Let's talk about all of them in the fifth one. So i don't know if it counts so much like movie and that is kind of. Were critics start separating from me with a like oh this is what he's going to do after dogma..

"Get there and do that so i'm late for everything. Dan never on time for anything my life and my mother son so that means them easily twenty minutes late when i leave the house and stuff i was not laid that deck. A went to the restaurant. An hour advance sat. There picked out a seat where i could see every entrance. Even if he came in from saudi-owned stuff. If george carlin was coming in and i sat there waiting for a full hour is just me and the wait staff and at noon on the button he came in he was timely so he comes into the restaurant and i can't do justice because i'm not george and i'm not standing. But he walks in. he stops dead. I'm the only person the restaurant now's like. I know you are. Oh my god. I've been listening to you my whole life watching him my whole life. My dad passed me onto he goes. I get that a lot goes. Listen i wanna talk to you about the script dogmas. Cryptos do like he goes. I like very much. He's gone can't help. So he said to me. His wife just passed away goes. we'll look. I would love to do this. But i wanted to talk to you about this. Because there's something that weighs heavy s but as you know my wife just passed away was not just as wide as business partner. They built the george carlin brand together for years so his devastating loss for so I said i heard. I'm so sorry abs and he said well i'm just not ready to take off my wedding ring yet. And if i'm a play a cardinal. I noted church. They don't wear rings unless they're big fat. Rings that show up opulent wealth but knock marriage. She's gone so we come to. An impasse is gone by think. I have a solution. If you'll allow me as the character of cardinal glick. I will put a band aid round my wedding ring and so it'll just be a side story thing that cardinal glick is klutzy or whatever. I'll be wearing that band aid in the movie. If i'm wearing that way i can wear my ring route the movie if you could deal with that then i can happily be in this movie and i was like why i you be my father as beautiful as georgia where bandaids all over your whole body. That's such a beautiful sentiment. One that i'm in. So i got to work with heroes of my you. Just you gotta be willing to like. It's not about your career. It's not about like what's going to get you to the next level is like what's gonna fill your heart and soul and those two relationships men. I'm lucky that. I had the both of those gentlemen past and you know i went from fans dude. Who was literally friends with them. George carlin would call my house bro. Stan lee came over to my house. When i'm on the ocean with sharks i did. It was fun. There's literally everything go rock climbing you. What's lenders even adult parts for for. Drop your kids off at this. Little care thing see again. That's why it's great for families to your family the entire time. Yup i love cruises. That's the disney cruise on the table the soviet cruise director. You never know you disappear for a long. The hard part is you actually as a cruise director. You're doing all of the planning. So google you doing all those things but you have to plan all of the programming on well. If it's dizzy crews i would imagine it's already done for you to show up and you got to be a part of you. Just have a team. You run a team. But a lot from from what i am familiar with. Take it with green. Because i'm not a cruise director. They do a lot of that planning though. And it's copy and paste at the but we're but here's a question. We ought to get that guy on there used to be a cruise director. Yeah sure because i want to know. When do you have time to have sex with the people that are on the boat. What's that window. Look yeah right so five. One three chris. You're on the air what's up. Hey chrissa pleasure. It's for some calls. I just want to say about the cruise ship. You know a few look down on the carpet and you see these little fishy going front ways. That's the front of the boat. Why put that in your pamphlet. We know that right. Yeah okay you took me. You know. I've been on about six hundred fifty two times in my wife says i always kept going into bakshi's look on the ground. I what do you mean book on ground crew was to and then i realized you know. Wow is a game changer. What what cruise line was it was the caribbean. Yeah yeah yeah well where. I was with dizzy. Cruise you just. He didn't care in front of the boat. Was i just learned not too long ago that i learned this because i rented a car once on what side the the gas tank is on and it's that little arrow that's on the gas tank on. Your dash indicates no idea. But but the lighthouse. Come on that right. What do you mean the the indicator has the little diagram of the gas tank Th there's like a little arrow next to it it'll that means which side the gas I'm oblivious. I didn't even know that. Don't feel thank god somebody else because i was waiting for your idea that we grow up to the property. Guess how many times have you out there report like when you buy a new car you pull up and you get out to look before you pull into the gas tank and everyone's like this deal this car here. He doesn't know that the little arrow do texan. Call him in your up. He's a first time caller. He said there so of course professional cruiser. That's what happens. Then you're on the air bending iron. I guess chris analysis has been the iron worker hands down best vacation. I've ever been on a christmas cruise. Through the caribbean stopped in ocho rios jamaica cozumel mexico in grand cayman island. Now if you've been on a cruise and you've got off the boat you realize i don't know if it's with just the one i was on car or a carnival but when you get off the boat you have to go through a metal detector. I did anyway and so when i went on a cruise i was like seventeen to international. Law doesn't apply. I'm not allowed to drink none of this. I'm not having all that going through the metal detector. You can't bring a bottle on xm if it's a plastic bottle. I figured this out pretty early on was bringing on half gallon. Vodka jack daniels all right so i walked on this boat with like four hundred bucks. All these.

He's is faster and you'll be done with it sooner. So you've done a lie running to or is it the climbing that gave you the endurance probably running I haven't ran I've only ran like I dunno, not that much lately. Is, injury but when I do Ryan I think the first time I ran after lake not running for like four months I. I think I did like four miles. So I was like I was like, yes, still got it. To, definitely the running. Climbing is more for me. It takes more strings which. String. That's really hard. Do you have a history of competing and running though like in school and stuff? Yeah. I did like cross country and track and stuff like that did soccer for a little bit. cheerleading. All the athleticism? Athletic yeah, narrowly just play video games all the time and just have. Less. Bursts bursts show. You were a much different person much different interest are you did play somebody games as a kid? I was playing video games like drought all that is also doing a lot of other things but when your kid you sleep like three hours a day and you're like, yeah, full of energy now, it's like six hours like. Yeah I'M GONNA need a NAP right about like three PM. Maybe a coffee at eleven am and Y-. Now with software engineering and coding and other tech stuff also something you did it a young age. been like. Computer stuff. Leaks, websites, and. Building, my own stuff and whatever. Did you make a Geo city's website did not make it to your city's website now. About my space. I did my space. I had the dope EST mice basically out ever or overlay sorry overlays that it was making. Did you have the like the emo auto play music and all that I do think I had auto clan music always probably be music I was are definitely wasn't enough kid I think. I never jumped on the mice bandwagon. That's good. You Save yourself a lot of. Wasted time. A lot of people were enthusiastic about the customization. Yeah I'm going on with months seven of ankle injury. Yeah. It's. Bound to good is it more like a hike or an actual climb? It's like a mix of both, but I think now I'm just going to be an enthusiastic hiker not not so much a climber anymore are there like clubs and stuff? For climbing where you can all go together and have jelly time. Yeah. I, mean there's there's a climbing clubs in climbing gyms and stuff like that and like.

"Engineering stuff. Yeah. If for different place though. Yeah I think I'm done with Software Engineering I. Kinda like it work more than engineering where justice fixing stuff and tinkering. That's fun. Yeah building networks and things like that. Yeah. Baby I'm just lazy. You want to be one of those people who sits in a basement just chills all day and waits for those phone calls. No. Okay. We've not that. Lazy. You. Ever see the IT crowd I have not I. Don't watch television much. It's a British comedy from around fifteen years ago. It's about to it guys doing their thing. You. Would even doing lately, you'll never guess I started a podcast. Shit That's I never would have guessed. Just. Kidding. How many have you done so far? Are you just starting out or like bestowing my second one? Okay. I am just starting out. Nice. Do you an intention of which direction you WanNa go I'm kind of winging it for the most part. I'm talking to people. And whatever happens happens you know. That's that's the way to do it. That's Kinda high life just like. As a wise millennial one said yellow. I know there's things I should be doing, but I'm more fun to do things you want to do right So I. Know I should go back to getting a job and things like that. But my last two years off, I've experienced a lot and learned a lot and this is one of these new things where. I want to experience and learn. I think there actually is a lot of value to talking to people. And as a society. A lot of times we're only interested in talking to the most successful or well known people and in their footsteps. But there's also a lot of value to talk to people. You don't know because everybody has a story and I know we may feel insignificant compared to the giants of the world. But I, don't really believe that anyone is insignificant. I don't think anyone's insignificance not like. Caste system or anything like that. Yeah and that's a big inspiration for doing this because I know most podcasts all try to do is get the most high profile guest possible and here I am I'm like, Hey I'll talk to anybody but also I can't really get the most profile guests anyway. But I wonder if I had the option to do that would I do that? And that kind of goes against the integrity of what I'm doing. Right. You talked to high profile people if you ever got the opportunity but don't acknowledge their..

As foundational things not not the videos themselves but just my interpretation reputation of of stuff that i learned from him <hes> because it's very very comprehensive and the nice thing is that he will take his time explaining explain everything and he'll play multiple times vacc- you can actually hear the differences in what he's doing which a lot of people won't a lot of people's okay. Here's how you do it. Leads leads a small little thing on your dog. You can't see what the screen is doing and and and you know maybe titles tell you what's going on and maybe not just the the name of the video supposed to clue you in his what's going on. It's like i have no idea what you doing. I don't know you you might want to explain this <music>. There's one piece of software that <hes> that have got for generating basically basically working on a classical arrangements and i'm just starting to play with that and it was kind of pricey but i got an on sale okay great. Let's take a look at this. This looks like really really cool stuff and the instructional videos explain a few of the functions and then say things like okay. Hey this is generated based on question and answer. What do you mean by question and answer in this context and i've been searching searching the manual. I've been searching videos. I have no idea what this is generating a musical phrase based on question and answer or just on answer or i'm question what yeah i hope. They have a good forum somewhere but anyway now you see here now. We're babbling about sex stuff but it is fun. Yeah it is it is once you get into it. If you like with our music. If you enjoy it you can really dig in deep and have a good time with it is very artistic and creative as long as you get that informational basis yup found and i apologize because you wanted to cut. This short probably going longer than you want to happen. I mean this is. It's you so you put us together in a room. We're going to talk for a while and does your very nine next thing. You know you lose an hour. It just happens with now. I do want to tell everybody listing who stuck through this whole podcast commend who to just yeah. I mean make sure tom smith gets to dragon. Con go check out his website in within the next week and he should have some new music up there erin by it all right now already got like twenty albums up there. Oh we don't have it. I just assume most people listening to this probably have all your stuff but if if they don't yeah i mean i noticed you had a collection of all of your stuff in one download that that's a band camp function. It's a very nice one. Yeah okay it basically youths thirty-five percent discount on the the set price for everything there. It's like click that and i think it's what i eight or nine concerts shirts and whole bunch of single tracks that haven't been putting on yet and albums and albums and albums so the best way to help tom. You know wait a week. Gets all the stuff up up and then by everything that's that's what i'm asking yeah do that. That's an and if you go to my patriot which is a patriot dot patriots dot com slash super. Tom and you sign up there than you'll get only new music ahead of everybody else. That's true <hes> yeah. You said you told me before we were talking before before the podcast that you <hes> that that that song that we listened to before we went on patriot i right as a matter of fact i got. The next world remind all god's as long as no extra charge if we can get injured veep we're here for you. They all also <music> offer void and get a mandolin in here. It's great you just do do any damn thing with it but <hes> but yeah i've been doing for a few years the kind of panel final that you do which is to say a beginner getting into creating music and recording panel i think i think the biggest difference between the two of us is that i've been trying to focus on people who know nothing gotcha a recording okay and because i i i i attended several panels not any yours at this point okay i. I attended a couple of years along the way in annual good stuff in there but there were some where it's like okay. We're going to tell you how to get into recording and by the time it's done okay you know by the time it's halfway done. It was breaking down into a microphone wars. There's and software wars. It's like no no you gotta have gotta have this particular. You know sure thirty nine. No no no you gotta have this p._d. And it's like the beginners eyes are glazing liaising over. It's not helpful. It's not helpful when you get in a year words on that say here. Here's what a cord is yeah. Here's what a musical physical style is here. Here's some software to try and here do this with it. You know you all need audacity download <unk> download that i kind of tried to approach it more with the knowledge about how to do things and i i try to emphasize that you can use a really low quality computer mike and somebody else who doesn't know what they're doing could use a really high quality ten thousand dollar microphone and years duffle surround better. If you know what you're doing engineering absolute and that's that's what people tend to not understand at first but then you have the truth. The gear or is less important than understanding how to use it <hes> exactly now now. It's these days with presets in the quality of software. It's less less of a thing than it used to be. <hes> people can make stuff sound pretty decent without much knowledge because okay vocal okay open the vocal preset on their the effects us come on and it'll sound okay but yeah but it's it's. It's still nice to have. The foundation of knowledge says actually doing yeah yeah. I mean got it. I'm a big fan of the y. You know. You can't really understand what how to make a decision about these things. If you don't understand why it works the way it does and once you do that brings you the good stuff so yeah totally understand so this is a thompson music machines. You can find it on facebook. Yeah excellent excellent yet definitely not 'cause <hes> believe me. There is no such things one resource to learn everything music that sounded as as as a matter of fact. I will recommend one of the best ones that i use okay is the recording revolution dot com okay now. The thing is <hes> the guy who does that. <hes> he has a program on mixing and he has programming recording. He's got a lot of stuff that he sells or tries to so and if you sign up you'll get about four or five emails will be trying to sell you stuff yeah but he's got a lot of free stuff. He's got a lot of free articles on a lot of free videos especially lots of things on youtube but youtube channel which will give you solid practical advice on beginning to intermediate.

I particularly like <hes> me. This is my taste so i'm totally just you know it's my podcast. I can get away with it in the alternate universe lost and found is i think that's the title right yet is the title okay and i just <hes> yeah. That always makes me laugh and it's it's. It's kind of <hes> i. I don't know if it's a commercial free <hes> commercial service or a p._s._a. Roy <unk> on non non commercials but it seemed a thing yeah the the more the song goes on the more. It's just kind of like oh my gosh yes i and that why have i not thought of this before kind of way i will i will point out something at this point all right and and this is maybe <hes> sticking sticking something on people's noses that they don't necessarily have to have one of the things that both of us talk about when we're doing our our panels on getting people into recording music is that there are gear wars all over the place. You know it's like okay. Do we a us reaper. Do we use logic brody. We use this microphone to use that studio monitor speakers we use this this that that did and it doesn't matter because the listener at the end doesn't care what year you use as long as it sounds good yeah now. It happens that this song this recording that you've got a a this this is from the life show last year <hes> from the sunday show last year. Yes the sunday show yeah. I was gonna say it's i. I think it sounds pretty good. Okay the studio recording of this also sounds pretty good but if you compare it with the mortar bed-and-breakfast recording which is from this this year all right. I've learned a bit in the last thirteen years and my mixes or solid and you can tell that and there's a couple of things in in the past. I love to go back and a remix. I gotta find the files and see if i can but it's just like if anybody out there is inspired to try recording and everything if you've been <hes> listening to andrew talk about getting into recording if you've been checking out his panels dimensions even checking on my panels practice does make perfect at least at least it improves it heavily. I am such a better engineer than i was when i first started doing this twenty three years ago. It's it's it's not even funny. It's it's i mean there's experience with knowing how to do something or tricks to make something sound a certain way but i think a lot of it the major a percentage of it is training your ear being able to hear the subtle differences between a and b it takes time you can't when you first started and you try doing very subtle effects on things and you can't tell the difference i mean you have to do it in a serious major way to be able to tell l. and then you just say well. I hope the subtle thing is good too but later it's <hes> i mean gradually your ear starts to be able to hear these very slight changes changes with just raising frequency by one point five decibels which must be something like that and it's also few learn along the way e you so you can be taught the stuff but it's it's going by feel a lot of the earliest oh yeah and the other thing that i think people have trouble figuring during out is that <hes> there is no wrong here. Absolutely.

"I mean, you pick any book off the shelf in a bookstore. You pick any magazine if that wreck, and I'm sure there's something in there that will upset somebody go to w h Smith and complain about everything that's just do that. There's no shortage of titles in there. I think you could probably make this argument for, but as rub said, you're we're not even being given an opportunity to present our material, and that is that is a really glaring stance on ideas because you do not give give our publication the chance to be in in the discussion in people's minds and on the shelves to to spark and engage that discussion. And and it it's it's a presumption that the controversy will. That everything else is not as controversial as we may potentially have with before. There's even a opportunity for anyone to raise a kind of complaint. Yeah. The fear of complaints. I would actually welcome government censorship over this. Because at least you can fight you can you can fight that Blake at least in this country. You can fight blatantly, and and with a lot of publicity, but when you have corporations that are overly timid and don't want to have these battles that kind that kind of of. It's not the same. It's not censorship per se, but it has the same effect. It's basically corporate silencing and that's not something that any of us should support. No, it's an editorial decision. So you're sort of putting bumpers and and guides on the the entirety of of what people can choose to read or not read. I mean instead of in people just, you know, passing it by or if they don't agree with it or whatever putting it down or not buying it. We're we're being barred from that marketplace. And it's it's in there's other attributes that you mentioned that you didn't mention like finding out where some of these stores are oftentimes distributors put other constraints on as well as the costs and stuff that you've mentioned, and this content requirements in sort of community standards that are in our private thing by these companies it really really narrows how we can operate and. Yeah. As an example, we wanna share things like where where people can go to get. Issues in in in these different places. So it's it's a really wide ranging in scope, we are working on that the hassle. It is we are working on on getting a full list of places that you can find the magazine in this country at least, and that's like pulling teeth to get that information because distributors are competing against other distributors. And if they give out the stores that they sell in that might hurt them by the sure hurts us if you don't let that if makes not because people don't know where to find this. It's really silly. But I just think back, you know, to the nineties the the height of the Zine explosion and the variety of material that you would find walking through any of these bookstores that has not been silenced because they're afraid of controversy despite all the all the stores have gone out of business. The ones that exist. Now, the distributors that supply them are afraid of any kind of controversy, which you know, have they ever seen a book before have they seen a magazine controversy is is the lifeblood is controversy illegal. I mean, it's it's it's one thing to have been accused of being. Of promoting legal things or or sharing ideas that that could be used by criminals, which is something we've been accused of in the past..
