"On the line with us as always and i'm stepping in this week because marseils got covid if we'll hamic will the sports editor for the wynette alley will big week coming up for gwinnett county football two teams in the state seven eight championship one in the six eight championship. We had a great semi final week last week. Did we not three of the four semifinalists in seventy was very impressive. I think a lot of people's attention than semifinals. Six three a semi final. It was a busy week for me last week but some some good football game. No doubt i'm going to ask you a question will it. And maybe i'm catching y'all guard here. Which one of those semi-final games did you go to personally or did you get a chance. Or ju stay at the home base. Just watching everything unfold from the beef valdosta. Those are both kind of obviously story programs that more state championships than any two programs in georgia. I wanted to check that one out. It's always good. Time up at tom riding stadium in be good stuff. Let's jump right into it and talk about a seventy games. We had three out of the four teams in seven in the semifinals. From gwinnett county proven. Once again this is a cobb county guy talking to you here. We'll proven once again and we've got bend over and say daddy because gwinnett county. Football is king three out of the top four teams in the state in the highest classification state. Ship will start off. We'll talk about grayson in norcross. Two storied programs in gwinnett county. Battling it out. Yeah the both won multiple state championships lately and both top notch program both undefeated so who looking forward to this. One norcross made made too many mistakes. i think. keep this one close against the great team. Grace and i think was surprised me was well. The greystone offense was able to move the ball at times against norcross defense. And no surprise that the grayson defense got the job done. That's thought norcross might have a tough time moving against those guys from grayson another shutout. That's enforced a playoff games. That's only six points allowed a grayson defense nuts. Four shutouts the last five games for the grayson defense so unbelievable defense being played by the rams right now that was pretty tough for norcross overcome in our other bracket it was a surprise for the two teams. That were there. Because i hadn't either one of them in my bracket semifinals collins. He'll and lounge lounge shot me get as far as they did. Quite frankly in collins hill was asleep in gwinnett county. You knew they were good. But i don't think the rest of the state realized how good they were. Yeah think kind of made their the plan. Even better late in the season started off. Great and i had a couple of stumbles that are mid season. But i think from game one when they put a beating on carroll's quirky class he kinda solid team to do. Their defense is really underrated. They got a great defensive line. They play better defense. People give them credit for sometimes and that's only because the offense has put up such numbers but when it got to the playoffs. I think councils defense has kind of been carrying the load of these last few rounds but they can score on anybody travis on her i think is the the number one in the in the state right now. He's just ridiculous offensive threat. And and of course. Sam horn the quarterbacks power five so score some points to say interesting matchup coming up no doubt the game. You attended the game. I watched and i think the majority of the state probably watched. If you're a high school football fan we'll at least you watched it for the first quarter or maybe till halftime buford in valdosta was supposed to be a huge game but buford had other plans did not will. That's a really impressive. Ranjan john right now. It's like we talked earlier season. I kind of lost f first game in pretty upset with the way they played against north. Cobb they've destroyed everybody on the schedule since then it's just A dominant effort weekend and week out. Nobody's tested a buford off about austin scorza points. The score look a little bit closer but it was really scott scored twice in the last couple of minutes. Really is just a dominant effort. Bubby for in really in the first half of this game away on this when leading thirty one nothing at halftime really dominating assets the fastest that a seventy six yard touchdown on the first. Play the game from jake. Jake bob dylan wittki. Tommy bugles that seventy yard interception return rat right after that and then the first route was on from their ballots did some things in the second half domestic somewhat somewhat interesting but is pretty much over with that first tablets. Well what was the mood at the game. I made on. Tv that the announcers were stunned as well as a lot of us and then didn't watching some of the comments from fans around the state. They were just mesmerized in. It seemed like every time buford touched the ball no matter which three running backs guy. It was a seven to twenty yard gain every single time in the first and second quarter. What was the mood at the game. Even from the valdosta side. And i think there's probably a lotta stunned folks on the valdosta side. I don't think they saw this kind of game coming. I think That was kinda surprising. But there was a lot of energy in the or stands on the buford sidelines. It was b-. I had a lot of success over the years. Nothing's kind of more expected. That'd be big time winds up in the playoffs. They're not not super shock but definitely excited. The really nice crowd has bigger. Crowd is curved. allow and everybody. There was pretty paul so that energy is really high fever sidelines than the depressed together out there from guys around the was in the lower class of occasions. The private schools g. a. say losers in the semifinals. As does wesley. and what. What's your thoughts on. Those games is a great season from wesleyan. They won the the region title and had one of the better seasons. They've had and while they were state runner up last year and made it back to the semi finals. So it's a no shame in that. I think they're into southern prince avenue. Prince avenue just beat the five time defending state at thirty eight nothing in the previous round. So you gotta figure that was really tough match for the wolf's a semi finals and brock vinegar. The georgia bound quarterback is tough to play in class. Iv providence Another to match up with them tough loss their effort for a wesleyan an even tougher loss for for jc who made some the clutch plays to keep that game going with oconee county but defensive has really dominated the game and and z one of these teams lose but they went to double overtime and the way it ended with a missed. Extra point and the stuck in overtime by jc was a heartbreaking ending for the spartans but but also great year for the spartans. They want another region championship and and made it back to the final four so kudos. Jc on another big cities. You know what's funny. We talk about teams like oconee county. It would be interesting to find out. How many kids on that oconee county roster originally started in gwinnett county. Elementary school will leave at at that. Because because i promise you there's quite a few over there to oconee county congratulations to them. Hey we're gonna take a quick break. "Them a chance to maybe he keeps a close close. Yeah i think so too. I think this is going to be with alabama. You have to get to thirty at least some probably forty and we know florida can get to their with with trask quarterback. So i'm very intrigued. By that contest and notre dame and clemson. Obviously this is a a a major till So i i personally think trevor lawrence who should be back. Even though in this era you never know about. I think he should be back playing with the team. But still under james a very strong squad as well and very unique. Acc championship game. I don't think we'll expected to see this. And we probably will never see it again But i'm very forts that contest. Personally yet it should be a fun game. I think a lot of people that are looking forward around to these teams because they played such a great game. The first go around. But but like you said. Trevor lawrence was going to be back. And that's a huge difference in this game They certainly have one of the better backups in college football too but i haven't traveled back out there. That's a lot of big games in his career and played in a lot of big games. I think it's gonna be the difference maker that sound levels xylenes to clemson. I think the more talent out the two teams The more team speed i think. Overall as a glimpse into one of those who think not playing notre dame anymore. You're not and you have trevor lawrence back quarterback that's too too big a manages. You didn't the first go round to really like clemson to win those. Yeah i think so too. And what's our nfl spotlight. We have a guy who is a found his way into the nfl and as offensive linemen and has made his presence felt in a major way. So who'd you select for. Our spotlight will former offensive lineman orlando brown a junior. He's dad courses. Nfl player for a long time He played a feature origina- remember talking to him as a senior his big transformation. He you've come as a football player. Even even as a senior in high school he was he was good that the he played football but he didn't play very well. He was out of shape. He could hardly get arly move. He admitted he's over. Four hundred pounds. Didn't have the looks of a football player. But he took it upon himself to lose some weight and he's a big boy still. Don't get me wrong. But these he worked hard to lose weight. What is in high school and he turned himself into division. One prospect by the end of this is high school period. Set for that wasn't even hardly play in and got out of shape so quick out of breath so quickly. He was impressed with the with the transition made in high school and the thinking continued to see that in high in college at oklahoma he got better and better all american and and then coming out of coming out of college overcame. Some adversity really a horrific combine performance. His speed was way down at the combine and drop him from being a probably the high first round pick and into the third round and the ravens. Really got steel there. He started every game as a rookie has just been a A big foundation player on that offense whether it's left tackle the right tackle a bright future with the ravens for for a long time and a along. Nfl career much like his dad. So just great to see the kid rise from from what he was much of a football player at all to the becoming. The top offensive tackles in or the last year and he had a pretty fun game this week. Obviously with with a high scoring game with the browns the right night from the the ravens offense and certainly Orlando's big part of that. "For both these guys to play well to get their team to win. We're looking forward to that contest. Let's move on to class. Six a buford the the wolves will move up. Classification was still put themselves in position for another state championship. Are they're going to face a another major squad in their semi-final well let's recap their contest against us in the quarters. A buford d top seed from region. Eight was able to emerge with a forty four fifteen victory over some of the factors in victory for buford. thank you for just playing well in all aspects. They he's got a late touchdown. Amac mega fifteen points but really only up seven For the game with the stars on there and it was a really explicit. He's offense that has the playmakers on the offense this out of the ball quarterback and receiver and the defense played well and i yelich at that. He's defenseless very athletic Huge defensive line and hadn't given up any points to the first two rounds of the playoffs so us coming off back to back shutouts for the buford offense to put up forty. Four points really ran the ball will. The running game was a huge part of what they did. Gabe urban was over a thousand yards. Victorian was over a thousand yards. But both those guys did well in the running game to score forty four points on that defense. That was coming back to back. Shutouts was i think really thing that stood out the most people and now they face valdosta. These are two of the most state championships in georgia. History about dasa has twenty four buford with twelve. The wildcats defeated carrollton thirty six to fifteen and their quarterfinals contest. So the valdosta the second seed for region one make the trip north to buford a so. There's a contest tune story programs in the entire state. A would you expect to see in this tilt. It's going to be fun. It'll be on tv also so it's a it's going to be on the state of where you're watching us eagerly rush probes bought brought new energy there to talk about asta. So it's gonna be interesting to see that one play out a talk to some of these people and be kinda small school for so long. It's grown so much. In the last fifteen twenty years always a smaller classification school in valdosta of course always been georgia's largest classification. Pretty much for most of us existence so that people never thought they would see a chance to play valdosta. So i think it's the it's a good job your chance for for to prove themselves against one of the more story programs in the state in the last twenty years before you can claim that there's a top programme in the state of georgia regardless of class of. We'll see how that one goes. It's it's gonna be fun to watch. I think i think be explained. Really good football right now but is as well and both teams played pretty tough schedule so i could turn out to be very close game but i like the wolves at home to get the win. You're going to be at this one always ask you. Where are you going to be this week. Is this the contest. You'll be attending. I am i'm gonna i'm gonna check this one out. I'm looking for that first meeting so that should be good is this. Is this the first time they've ever played against each other. In any level it is as well that is. That's so odd they've been in different classifications over the years but we said he's a two by state championships the to talk in history of georgia. So we're really looking forward. The checking out moving on the class three a greater atlanta christian. They continued their run towards a state title. They're going to face a con o'connor county before we get to that. Let's recap spartans. Victory over apple in county in the quarterfinals. This past friday a thirty one to thirteen were. Some of the key reasons at jc was able to come out with a win. That's the one of the things that stood out talking to coach already was the jc played situational football. They snuck out. They play the time right at the end of the first staff. Gotta stop got a late scored right there before. Have them to swing momentum in this really well against an app the county team that i had a lot of weapons. It was very very tough game as it should be in the quarter-finals but she just keeps finding a way to win a lot of superstars over there for the spartans but it just like charlie always says it's true teen and played well in all aspects a lot of players all over the field and got it done a great win for those guys. They've they've another another big challenge this week in oconee county. Yeah oconee county. The top seed from region eight but they do travel to greater atlantic ocean though the spartans do get a home contest a what we some key factors for jc to earn a victory. What will have to execute. Well i think. Jc does well on defense. I think they'll be fine on that side of the ball. He's going to be offensively. Gnc do enough offensively against what is very good. Cutting county defence A lot of athletes on that side of the ball. Some power five players on the defense edible. They give up a points. A game over there at coney. County scored more than sixteen on oconee of the entire season. Just the team. That's been year up to win. The state championship. Teams were talked about in the commerce station for wednesday in triple Going into the season. So it's it's gonna be a major challenge for jc But i think it really comes down to offense of success can can jesse score enough points to win in this one. You're looking forward to checking that out. And then finally class a private are wesleyan wolves kind of become to cardiac wolves. They have been so many close contests throughout the entire season and they keep their season going and they're going to face. I avenue christian but going back to last week. They're able to defeat savannah christian. Twenty one. to seventeen a late touchdown pass in the fourth quarter apparel propelled a wesleyan to that victory. Sue will be wesleyan day. Keep finding ways to get victories. And that's all that matters at this time of year. That definitely even in the regular season. That kinda started Holiness by touchdown late in the season for big regional win a hebron overtime and then you look at the state house. They will in their state playoff games by six points. Three points and four points And all been exciting down to the end games. It wasn't found a way way to win. It's team that's the coach's really liked trust the kids and the veteran players that have been around for a lot of playoff games of course made the state finals last season so that they know what they're doing in these situations in that concerned when they get down at any point and when the game gets tight late coach bridge and has confidence in his kids that they're gonna find a way to get it done so far. That's been the case in the playoffs. They've been able to win some huge games and get back to the final four and they face prince avenue christian a team that probably the about shocking story lines are still scores some last week. i mean prince avenue christian top seed from region eight and they'd been in a top two or three in the rankings all year but beating eagles landing christian thirty eight and nothing that that was on. Tv so a lot of us got to see that just a brilliant performance by prince avenue christian to have a talk ranked quarterback in just a really good squad What will wesleyan have to do to. They have a home game which is good Will what would have to do to Make competitive in chita make their cinderella run. I guess in a wife towards to state title. I think it's gonna take a lot. This is obviously a major mismatching and was lynn. The first to tell you that the big time underdogs in this one. They played early in the season and prince avenue on fifty two twenty six. Just a i think what it comes down to does not make mistakes. Prince avenue did pretty pre- pretty big win on him earlier in the year but was also didn't play. It's best in in that game. Wasn't that some offensive success. Which which. I think that can take into this game with some confidence. They they did score. Twenty six points on prince avenue in had a chance to to to really do some things offensively that they liked a defensively as is the problem the way they played the first go around. I don't think they thought they played very well. Defensively nelson made some mistakes both in turn the ball over and missed assignments and that sort of thing that really helped out Prince avenue in those twin. They can avoid those mistakes. Not give anything free Play a little better tackle better on the defensive side of the ball. I think they could make the closer game than people. Think and Think was wasn't as the offense to do with it. They're gonna wanna they big line. They want to run the ball. Griffin carpool of thinking. That running game going a little bit control the clock and and limit the amount of touch. The pantograph gets on the other side of quarterback That'd be a big factor in this game. So hopefully hopefully. It wasn't.

"gwinnett" Discussed on Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast
"Common. Hi welcome back to the daily post. Football friday podcast. Which things up a little bit this week with a college schedule especially locally being all over the map Literally we are going to transition to recruiting news and discuss some of our local talent making their college commitments. So we'll over the past week. See what have been some standouts. It's been a big hit particularly this week. It's been big for peach periods both former and current players albert jiang. Who was the county punter and kicker for for lines. Couple years ago he He committed a pin. He had been originally committed to army and it kind of changed his mind to pin in the early market. If he's got an army and as options he's gonna avi league where i think he'll do very well at penn and cody arcade fox off. Its alignment up therapy Committed central arkansas. But i think the most noteworthy news was a was amari. Mcneil bestiary senior lamis. He's big good six four to eighty five something like that. He's a e- committed the tennessee volunteers. This week is a guy that was recruited up there as a defensive laminated. he didn't even at all salaam. it has entire career. Peachtree ridge just started playing a little defensive line this year. And i guess the tennessee volunteers and coach pruitt is obviously. He's a defensive coach. Knows what he's doing Saw something that they really liked about a mcneil on defense and ended up offering him late in the process. And and i took that offer up tennessee. Chance to plenty sec. I think he's a. He's been a very underrated talent. The last several years. It's great to see him that opportunity and this week also wills a recruiting convention or a meeting that mill creek. I saw the article on prep sports. Dot com a. What was that event like. Especially during this pandemic and the change really into recruiting practices and approach to things. We've had to deal with in twenty twenty. It was the was the touchdown club with their annual college recruiting fair. It's a it's a win. It's hosted by the touchdown club goes but it's really the teams from all schools from oliver. North georgia high schools to come there. A lot of fulton county schools for site schools cop schools of the government is this event. It's very well attended by college. Coaches in the past. You'd see hundreds and hundreds of college coaches run through Recruiting when it gives an other kids. Another areas of the college coaches is largely smaller schools. You'll see some big schools in the travel They can come kind of a one stop shop to see that many kids at that many different schools and not have to do as much traveling around all over the place when their budgets. Not the same as Some of the sec schools in that sort of thing so it gives them a chance to talk with local coaches see video. Get a little more information. On inside on players it's generally in the arena and the and the civic center there and it's a it's a lot of people packed into a small place but of course with covert. It was a little different this year. They had to do it. Outdoors Mill creek the tents. We're kind of set up around the track which those the best they could do in that situation with covid and i. I think the other big differences. The college recruiting is a little different right now. smaller schools don't have the budget and don't law out of uncertainty. How spots seems going to have with gets coming back and that sort of thing so that the number of colleges attending was much much smaller than normally is but still reasonable number of teams and schools showed up over there to look at kids and And i think there's probably certainly see a handful of kids that found some opportunities coming out of the fair which should be a handful of kids can can find their way to college football program. I think it was worth having if for sure any other college stanton that you saw from this past week represented gwinnett. Well i think a couple that stood out to me. I think i think number one davis mills Former gs jason quarterback he led stanford to win over number twenty washington. It was the first loss for a season. For washington's a record on the season davis was twenty out of thirty passing. Two hundred fifty two yards and a touchdown all set a couple of runs and that Great effort by davis. He's having a big senior season. He's a free education into which is never a bad thing while he's out there and kid i wanted to mention will show Former oxford defensive lineman troy shutout south alabama and. He was a big reason why last week he had one enough sacks and continues to be a force on the defensive line for troy for sure and nfl spotlight. We'll have a repeat this this week with another guy. He's taking advantage of the opportunity to play in. Probably leading one of the hottest teams in the nfl to now only by plow spa potentially a division title lang almond from the nearest guy eligible clemson and played grayson here locally his kind of rebirth continues to it kind of got drafted in the fourth round in two thousand seventeen and a nice rookie season restaurant. And seventy four hundred seventy six ago and we'll like is going to be the future of the franchise and then The chance to drift saquon barkley. Who's just once in a generation type talent. They're running back so kind of push pushed to the back burner. He had a hundred seventy six yards a second year in the pros and the only one hundred rushing yards all of two thousand nineteen so we can get a lot of lot of touches. Their saquon getting hurt. He's gonna rebirth. This year is kinda showed. His value had a career high. One hundred thirty five rushing yards last week in the giants. Be a big sixty yard. Run in the third four. That was a career long so at his career. Along with sixty yard is your best. One hundred. Thirty five rushing yards is actually one of the three league nominees for the fedex ground player of the week. So like you said a breakthrough for performance one of the hottest teams of the league teams in league. He's he's a dominant. Football player was a great linebacker in high school. And he's doing it for a team that's on a lot of football games right now and that makes it a lot more fun.
