BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Houston Considered Top Candidates for Big 12 Expansion

"A report out this afternoon at Ucf could be headed to the big twelve. I know you're there to do the game. Let that potentially could really have a lot of the effects especially with texas and oklahoma. What what do you make out of that report. That has ucf byu let me. I'm trying to remember. Who else is in that. Cincinnati and houston in that. Yeah lucky me. You just rattled off one powerful independent byu a couple of group of five schools cincinnati. A lot of people think for a playoff spot this year because the schedule and then. Ucs tonight pot. You know gus malzahn. Well i spoke with him yesterday. As part of our coaches call. And it's no secret. Malzahn took this job because he was one a good fit for him but to hey knows that. Ucf is on the verge getting out of that group of five corridor and getting into power. Five football dan stand that the the winds are change. You're going to happen every year. We talked playoff expansion to twelve teams which would benefit. Ucf gus malzahn cincinnati. Luke fickle until. I'm not surprised in the least bit that. Ucf is coveted spot wide. Because it's the state of florida smack down to the central their orlando. There's a lot of talent this team who's is gonna feel tonight has a ton of talent. And so look it's it makes sense if you're in the big twelve and you just lost taxes and you just lost oklahoma. We're going to sit here and say that you're going to replace those brands with cincinnati. Ucf byu in houston but you do get a couple of teams that together can stop that bleeding just enough to still compete and steal it. Pretty competitive conference

Coaching search updates: Kevin Steele the favorite at Auburn

"Obviously we're in the middle. Coaching carousel to and i think the most interesting one right now is auburn I think they spent twenty one point. Five million dollars to buy out gus malzahn. We could argue whether he should have been fired or not the end of the day. He lost the momentum there and they the boosters put the you know got out the hat and collected the money and they fired him. So you think okay. You're gonna fire Coach gus malzahn. All that money. You're going to want to go out and get like the splashes possible coach. You can get tell us who's actually leading the coaching search right now as we reported this morning. That sources are telling me that the front runner for this job right now is defensive coordinator kevin steele and while that may blow some people's minds. He has some very very influential people at auburn who are big believers in him and in his corner at auburn. Especially that matters right so look We have a story up but the athletic now about who's in the mix there and the ones. I think one of the people who is really a big contender against kevin steele on this front is lane. Kiffin at ole miss But i think he would have a hard time turning that job down. I think he's obviously a big name. Now he's foreign four. It's it's interesting in that. I think a saturday's game between ole miss and lsu doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. You know outside of those two programs. But i think it may may need a little bit of something potentially at auburn as crazy as it sounds because for some people at auburn i think they could shape it and saying all right kevin steele dreadful run as the head coach at baylor twenty. Plus years ago he was one and thirty one in big twelve. Play at baylor is a long time ago but people. I've talked to down there have made the case where you know what at had a bad record. The first time he was a head coach and he just won a national title a year ago. And my my counter. That was well. He did have to times as interim pretty lengthy runs where he was at least able to show people he's evolved and grown and those people said look a people at auburn feel like kevin steele's been the guy who's hold it together for them the last few years he is very well respected within the scc And so also know how. Attractive is lane to auburn. He did a really good job at fau their foreign You know if he loses to. Lsu's not very good this year. He's foreign five. I think probably diminishes a little bit No its first year. It wasn't like anybody expected out all messed great. But he's definitely a candidate As billy napier from louisiana Maybe who freezes is somebody that that auburn would push for. I think and you still have steve sarkisian there. You know also in the state of alabama So it's a really interesting. Search in auburn is wildly unpredictable. What does but From what i heard they would love to have a coach Decided upon by the beginning of next week

"I'm new to F1 my first month following F1 religiously. I don't know if Abu Dhabi is always a boring track maybe the track layout lends itself to a boring race. That's not very good. I don't know but I will say there's also an inherent flaw with F1 wage. I don't know that it's like this world shattering awful thing. It's just a it's a thing that you can't really solve as the built into the way. The leak works is you always are going to have an anti-climactic ending. I mean, although I will say if there's ever racing comes down to the season that comes down to the final race. I think that'd be amazing. I bet it's happened before. Would have been so cool. Like this race had huge implications. It didn't because you got a point scoring system. And so Lewis Hamilton won a long time ago and a couple of weeks ago Mercedes one. So, we we knew took one the drivers championship and the Constructors Championship weeks ago now in this race and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Sergio, Perez had engine trouble had to retire early meaning he did not finish the race. So raising points hopes to get third in F1 relied on Lance stroll and Lance stroll could not deliver by the way. It's not a surprise if I were racing going to go off, okay. All of your hopes to get a Podium finish in the Constructors Championship to get third. I don't think of a Podium that and I've no idea but to get third all your hopes rely rely on Lance shovel. I'd go dang it. We lost and they did Landon or Scott V Carlos Sainz got sick so that gave McLaren 18 points on the day. They leapfrogged racing Point Lance stroll finished and that gave racing what one point on the year. So in the constructors got Mercedes got first. They had 573 points Red Bull got second with 319 points and June 3rd was McLaren with 202 points and right behind them and forth. Was racing point of 195 points rented was V hundred eighty-one. I was really all that happened. The only interesting thing that happened in this race. Was that McLaren LeapFrog Gracepoint. Otherwise the top three did not change the entire race of stayed the same and it will say as I reflect on F1, like I love the driver's I love the the technical terms. I love the game but might I want to give a shout out to one of the things I think is often overlooked by people that are not new to F1. So if you happen to have one fan for a long time, you take a lot of stuff. I'm about to say for granted. I would imagine I'm coming with an American perspective and watching football and baseball and the NBA my whole life. And what one thing I love about F1 is that the broadcasters are always the same and by the way, they're always great. I mean you watch an NFL game, you're never listening to the same broadcasters week to week unless you watch my life a couple of prime-time games. And even then it's you know, Sunday Night Football is their guys on fox says they are guy and ESPN. Is there a couple of guys and so listening to F1 get in the consistent same broadcast off every week makes me so happy and actually love them the British accents. It's so good and works really really well. The music is awesome. There are great graphics. There's no commercial breaks like them American Sports So you you're getting commercials with you know, the the team names and the stuff on their jackets and hats and everything, but there's no breaks from the race and I love that. There's different countries and different locations. You see these beautiful landscapes like the outs and the mountains and beaches and now my God, it's so cool. I love I love that aspect of F-16. It's an amazing spectacle really.

"It's a lot of money. I'm going to also have an unhealthy expectation right off the bat. And if you're me, I mean you better make me a rich man. If you want me to coach at Auburn if I'm Mario Cristobal or Mike Gundy who's very safe and very happy. So we'll see I am I got my eye on this Auburn job. We'll see what happens again. I just feel like they got angry. They're like there were so mad. They fired the guy emotion. They took action before they really had to replace him and we'll see you they replaced him with we'll see what happens. I mean, I'm criticizing Auburn but I mean two years from now, they could be winning a national championship. Who knows right? Try to be fair trying to be honest. Try to be open Monday. But I don't know the situation was entirely handled the right way, even though again, I'm not the first guy to defend my defend guess my son Gus Malzahn control freak. His offenses have it in playing very well off. He's not killing. It's like if you're not doing amazing, you're firing. Probably Justified but was it really Justified to do a 21-point four or five million dollar buyout right now during a pandemic off when you probably don't have a plan to replace him like any six and four. He had a winning record. By the way this year with the Young quarterback is growing like, okay. Good luck, man. Good luck. Auburn. Good luck to you guys. By the way, the Cleveland Indians are no more. The team announced that they are changing their name. So they're you know, I kind of like the washing and baseball team. I'm sorry the Cleveland baseball team cuz we're you know, we're in baseball and it's in Cleveland and that's named teams. Now. It's got like a charm kind of like the like Dallas FC Dallas football club or you know watching a football team. I don't know. I kind of like it. I think it's a smart move purely from a PR standpoint where it's proactive right? You're changing your team name. Ahead of a you know before it became a big problem before there was a crisis level event that you had to solve. I mean the why shouldn't football team had their sponsors pull out, We better change our name this hasn't happened in Cleveland, but you might as well get ahead of it. I mean they've they've been getting crap about this for years. And again, it's a smart PR move. You're probably not going to lose your die-hard fans anything you gain respect around the world people going like good on the Cleveland baseball team. Now the rumored name to replace. The the.

"The program is dead. Progressing at the rate. We should expect at this Advanced stage and Coach Smith's 10-year to achieve our competitive objectives. I believe new leadership of the football program is required. I will always look fondly on the time love you and I have spent together. I wish him and Marianne nothing but the best it's justified in my opinion. Like Illinois is totally justified there. They gave him five years and that's fair. You have a coach five years. It is 2 and 5. It's not working wage. I think it was mature. I liked his he had this cool white beard, but I think it's very fair to fire Levi Smith at this point, you know, not to mention that the next head coach can feel very comfortable knowing that there is a bulb patient Administration governing, Illinois football. Now Auburn fired their coach Gus Malzahn after eight years and so I burn is going to pay a 21.4 or five million dollar offer buyout to Gus Malzahn to get rid of him. They're paying him to leave by the way. Coach has got a winning record. He's six and four this year. And also looks even worse because you're now as a result of this the timings terrible because not only is it right before the early signing period starts in college football. It also makes Alabama's highest paid state employee during a pandemic is now a fired football coach not good. That's that does not sit sit very well spot optically right off now Gus Malzahn is not a guy. I'm going to go out of my way to defend. He's very secretive. His offense is supposed to be a strong suit it actually his offense has struggled like it's supposed to be an offensive guy what's going on with the Auburn athletic director came out and said that they were looking for a coach who can quote help the Auburn program consistently compete at the highest level. So they're like, we're not competitive enough want to get rid of them. I let's do a buyout. I'll be honest here though. It seems like Auburn somebody just got angry and said you're out of your get out of here scram and they fired Gus Malzahn with dog. Plant, and that's not ever really good again. Not a guy I'm not going to defend God's miles on that heavily. I will say that as a coach. He did go to the National Championship is very first thought his rookie season as head coach lost the national championship to Florida State. He was also the offensive coordinator for Cam Newton Cam won a Heisman Trophy that did win a National Championship with that year with him as offensive coordinator. And Gus Malzahn is a super control freak. That's well known about him. But he did have some cool moments here that kicks 6 to beat Alabama with really like the, you know kicked the album and kicks a field goal Auburn catches. It runs a grotesque down the left sideline and like Nick Young Nick Nick Marshall..

"There. Is so obvious. I mean, he's an amazing arm. He can run really well. He's got good ball location. He can extend plays he can run for yardage. I mean DTR can do everything off Dorian thompson-robinson. He's got the skill set of a Heisman Trophy winner. I mean just to be totally honest. And we've seen flashes occasionally. I remember there was a washing the state game up and Pullman a couple of like two years ago. Maybe we're in the snow. He put it like sixty six points and had a crazy comeback. And so we've seen moments where GTR is amazing and the USC game. You played really really well. And I don't know what the problem is. I can't diagnose the problem. I think I can't tell you why he hasn't exploded and become a star. I feel like he's capable of it and it hasn't happened. GTRs had a very up-and-down career where moments of greatness and the moments are really bad Lowe's and maybe it's coaching. Maybe it's he was out with covid-19 year, so we'll never really know em. And again if it is coaching. I mean that appears to also been kind of the problem with Justin Herbert is he got the NFL got better coaching Justin Herbert exploded and were like wow, how could you ever doubt I'm going to go. Well, he wasn't doing this stuff. He's doing the NFL college, right? He's okay like you can be mad at you about Justin her but I think good coaching matters, and that's what made Justin Herbert even better. And I would love to see Dorian Thompson Robinson at the Senior Bowl. Or in an NFL preseason game because he's a really talented quarterback and I I'm not sure why he hasn't exploded. I don't know. Is it him? Is it work? Ethic is Thursday it is he just a really talented guy that doesn't care very much. Is he poorly coached? Like I don't know what's going on. But I know that when I look at Dorian Thompson Robinson play very very well. I go home. Like where is that all the time? It's discouraging and disappointing because it feels like I've missed opportunity with a guy that's incredibly physically gifted who has not exploded and has not had a great career and I feel like it's capable of potentially winning a Heisman Trophy with just as talent-wise. So I don't know DJ are makes me very very sad. UCLA football makes me very very sad Chip Kelly. I don't believe should be the guy that turned that program around and it's all just unfortunate. Now by the way, I want to give a shout out to UCLA running back. Dmytryk Felton dude can run dude can catch passes. He's got a really cool skill set off. I think he's going to get a chance in the NFL and I walked away from the USC game going. Who's that guy? Very impressed with Dmitri Felton and I want to see more of him down the road moving forward. All right. I'm going to take a short break when I return we'll talk about fired coaches will talk about Cleveland baseball Formula One at the end Gus Malzahn. You.

"The number one thing I can praise DeShaun Watson for this year. Is that he has not added to his team's problems at all at all. He's made great decisions. He's been very accurate dude has been patient. He's off 26 touchdowns this year five interceptions. Also I think is run for three or more touchdowns. So I I walk away from this year thinking that man DeShaun Watson deserves a ton of credit for how stable he's been this year. Despite the bad team around him Houston's 4 and 9. I mean again Chicago, for example, they had a drive that got ruined by penalties at a false start and then a a holding penalty. That's fifteen yards of penalties from I think it was like started on second down. It's ruined the drive. He also got sacked for a safety on a play where the Bears brought a four-man rush. And only by the way you have five offensive lineman. So five offensive lineman and running back in the backfield. Chicago brought a four-man rush and his Right Guard his right tackle and a center all completely failed their blocks just completely missed got badly beaten. So DeShaun Watson fact in the end zone that's two points for the other team on another Drive Duke Johnson fumbled. That's a turnover Drive ruined and on a certain date on their first drive the Berenstain tablets and the shuttle Watson being a a at this point a mature quarterback said, hey, I recognize a blitz if you Blitz me that means you got a weakness and covers. I'm going to catch the ball and throw the ball to beat your Blitz package. He did that and guess what his receiver did not get his head around KO bahat route if they Blitz alert alert. You need to look for the ball. Get your head around to receive it in a cat his head around maybe Jean Watson look bad and there was a through Nickleby pasok. It's so many things are going wrong, and I hate to be the guy but it's not just wanna watch his fault. It's hey receiver get your head around. Hey off. It's a line. How about three of the five? You don't just go? Only with how about we not have really that penalties that cost us fifteen yards on first sales first downright first down your what second first and twenty-five now that's not you can't have that can happen wage cannot fumbles can't ever turnovers can't of all these problems. It's crazy to me and all all everything I listed from that game is just the first half. It might not even be the end of the first half. I just stopped paying attention to stop caring except disecting what was ruining their drives and started feeling bad for the Sean Watson. I got sacked six times. Yeah pressure on his face all day and those six acts are not indicative of how many times he had pressure on his face because of all the other times where he escaped pressure. He got away made them earn it. He was making guys miss in the backfield. I mean, I feel so bad for the genre watch this poor guy has I really would sad is that Number one shout out to the Sean Watson. His team is awful and he's playing about as good as he possibly could write. He's making he's he's controlling everything..

"And you're like, what kind of tease is that exact means? Nothing know. We need to talk about DeShaun Watson the Houston Texans quarterback. Home and he sat up quietly impressive here this year where he was is just a mess on both sides of the ball all around him. I mean, their offensive line is awful. They cannot throw the ball. They're literally the worst running team statistically in the entire NFL. They have had a ton of injuries. They're terrible on defense. They've been unimpressive receiver again statistically the worst running team and dad are also statistically the second-to-last defense in the NFL. So the second worst defense in NFL, they're terrible running the football. All they really have is a quarterback DeShaun Watson and I believe and I'm spitballing here but in The Hobbit, there's a mountain called the Lonely Mountain and I just always imagined it as as P cat stands out above everything else around it. That's the Sean Watson on Houston, Texas and you can throw in maybe it's a long week with JJ Watt there as well. It's it's DeShaun Watson just standing out above everybody else and everybody else is just nothing around him. It's like it's like man this poor guy is just this lonely song Mountain out there hoping to get some help and get some support around him. I just oh, by the way, they also fired their coach in October and this obviously and they traded traded away. Hopkins member DeShaun Watson security blanket. His best friend is receiver his guy who anytime he was in trouble. He could go find new can throw him the ball. I mean DeAndre Hopkins losing him was a another example of just dead man. This this Texans football team has just beeped and beating the crap out of town watch and so sad and context matters. And the situation around DeShaun Watson is awful awful. However, despite that. 7 a good year. I actually I've been watching the Sean Watson every week and I go man. Like I watch probably way to more too much football. There are four 9 football team. I watch every game they played this year and I should not have but I have faith I cuz I like the shuttle watch and he plays very well. He plays cleaned plays a fish and football and every time I watched the Sean Watson all kinds of stuff happens around the dude stuff that the guy cannot possibly control dropped passes fumbles immediate pressure where like he'll he'll catch the snap and there's three guys in his face instantly and he like I know what you do there like it's not even it's a four-man rush. You can't block for guys home with five offensive lineman. And sometimes they're running back by the way. His defense gives up a ton of points and when your team is really really bad. It's easy to develop bad habits. I think the prime example of this is Carson Wentz the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback where Carson was holding onto the ball way too long. He was forcing throws truck make something happen to call a hero ball. And that's part of why Carson Wentz Eagles quarterback has such a bad year and eventually got benched for Jalen hurts has I think he was already struggling with accuracy to some degree and the the pressure Amplified things and then having a bad offensive line having receiver troubles. I mean he is just he was jacking off over the place hoping playing hero Bowl holding on a ball taking sacks get a fumble against the against the Cowboys we're extended plans accruable. I throw it throw the ball away and Carson's held onto it fumble that it was just like so frustrated that I made a video about if you want to go watch it. You can't so.

"Oh my goodness. Good morning. Good afternoon. Whatever it is for you. I hope you're having a fantastic day. My name is Zach shomler. This is strong opinion Sports episode 316 over to it. Very well out there and today's episode weren't talk about Mitchell trubisky the Bears quarterback. He's back and I think I got a good topic for Bears fans out there in that feel like I'm not going to say anymore. Actually. We'll get there in a moment want to talk about the Houston Texans. We're going to talk about USC football. We're going to talk about Chip Kelly UCLA some of the Frustration they're going to talk about Gus Malzahn getting fired by Auburn. We're to talk about some other college coaches that got canned. We're going to talk about Cleveland baseball. They do not have a team. And so I kind of vote, you know, the Cleveland baseball team sounds like a great name to me and then look I think we should have a fun show head. I'm really excited for today. There's Thursday Night Football tonight. That'll be awesome. I want to dive in though. And I guess I need water first. Am I strong opinion Sports mug real quick before that. I don't have a way to tell this to you guys yet. I'm working on it. Hope it comes soon. I want to make them really cheap and you know. Now high quality but cheap to buy I don't want to gouge you guys so working on behind the scenes. It's coming. I hope someday. But again, I want to make it a fair reasonable price. That's not going to blow people's doorknobs off. I want to give Bears quarterback Mitchell trubisky a shout out and look if you know me. I try to always be fair. And so when somebody deserves to be called out, hey, look I call it like it is I try to be honest all the time. But if I'm going to call people out, there's a bit of Integrity that comes along with that. So again, if I'm going to call somebody out when they're bad. I also think it's fair to praise them when they're good. And while I stand by everything I've ever said about Mitchell trubisky. He's played a lot about football. He drives me nuts. I will say the guy had a very very good game on Sunday against Houston and look he made good decisions and I've been waiting a long time for trubisky to play that way there were flashes every once awhile, where you go. Wow, trubisky Alex good I liked it. And you know, I am executed at a very high level on Sunday. I thought he under threw the ball a couple of times, you know down the sideline or on out routes where I go. I don't know that that's a completion against a better defense off. But he did have this awesome throw like where he's rolling left. He's got Whitney mercilus in his face had an underhanded delivery to Kolkata met and I thought that was kind of his best play of the day where I went. Oh God.

"My God, man. Yeah s o Gus Malzahn, who almost won the national championship there is now fired. Uh, what is he getting? 22 22 rounded up to 22 22 Million's go just Stop coaching here. Guys, woulda cost Texas 25 Million ish to move on from Herman and his staff. And when there's no slam dunk, super excite the base candidate out there, then Yeah, I just had it made sense. What? Crystal heart how public? This attempt was, You know, I wonder how Tom Herman feels about that. I think he was probably just thinking, you know, glad to not be fired. Speaking of things that make absolute total sense of the Longhorns are officially in third place in the big 12 ft. Oh, now I know that seems weird because Oklahoma State has more wins and a higher winning percentage. But in this weird coronavirus year of 2020, where nothing makes sense, apparently the big 12 rules saying an unbalanced schedule because Oklahoma State's play 10 Games Texas only gonna play nine. There's their 73, Texas is six and three. Okay. Texas beat them head to head. Oh, so they are. Texas is officially in third place. So sorry Cowboys, which matters there's no third place trophy, but but it matters because if Oklahoma or Iowa State are not able to play Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Texas would be the replacement. Why Texas is I'm not sure. When's the deadline If Iowa State calls in covert sick on Friday, this Texas fire up the bus and head up the Arlington I'm wants to play. Understand how this how this works. Also put on this jersey last week checked like a third of the Longhorn team themselves were in covert quarantine.

"I think that's what Gus malzahn did last night. How about Jack in Memphis, Tennessee? Hello, jack. Hello hit. You think Georgia's biggest competition that used to Sears? I think it's, it's Florida. Who would you vote for? I would go, I'll Florida but I think I I don't know. I think I think Tennessee's on the rise to, to tell me what you from Tennessee. That would make you think that could be. They could be Georgia. The coats and they're bringing in good. Good players. You think you could you could match up, what kind of done recruiting wise versus Georgia's done over the last four years, probably not away. Listen, I'm not I'm not saying that they're not going to be good in the future. But I mean there's no one in these right now. That's comparible, Georgia. But I don't I don't even think Florida's very close. I mean there there may be in the same. Maybe one time zone over, but they're not that close. Hey, thanks for the call. Do appreciate we're we've hit the end of the first hour Richard dyke among our guest. We have a lot more to do on this Monday afternoon. We'll update you on the Arkansas. Baseball game. "So that's critical. Now. The question comes down to how quickly can Gus malzahn. Get got a quarterback, ready be Gatewood or, or bow Knicks, most people think it's going to be VO Knicks. And how well does he navigate one of the most difficult schedules in the country? I mean, there are there, two schools that have Clemson Georgia in Alabama. But the to me it's the front half of the season that is problematic for Auburn. If they don't get off to a fast start with Oregon AM and, and Florida. All three are away from Jordan hare stadium, one neutral site, the two road games. And then, and then add LSU, Georgia, and Alabama. So you hit you in the second half of the season. You have three top ten teams, including two of the top three you tell me. I mean for Auburn to, to have a big year, they have to pull several upsets I think I agree with you. And I think are scheduled will probably the biggest downfall. But like you said it goes to whether everybody around here, thinks that nicks is going to be the quarterback. He was great in hostile. Yeah. Is that going to translate over in college? But I'll tell you I've seen it we've seen it. We we've all seen a lot of freshman quarterbacks. Be good. Yes. But, you know, Oregon has a veteran quarterback. I know everyone wants to laugh about the Pac twelve but I think that game is is is the first bellwether game. I if Auburn Wednesday game then they can get on a roll. I think Auburn has to be either Georgia or Alabama. I know they'd they'd beat both of them two years ago. I don't think they can do that. But yeah, I would give Auburn a shot at their if they're good. Auburn is among the most dangerous home crowds in in all of college football. So you have to factor that in it. Exactly. Are Paul taking my call? Hey, thanks. And you know, I don't think I think malzahn is certainly a good coach. He just hasn't been a consistent coach. And that's really why we have this biannual conversation about his future. Thank you for the call. Mario is up next in Memphis. So a Mario. Good to hear from you. A couple, of course, bet least Dallas putting together for coaches even if you see school ever food. Yes. The most I think design does he can't know here. Here's a couple of coaches who have who have laughed and then gone somewhere else. And then ended up, they must champ was was let go at Florida. He spent a year at Auburn, and then he went to South Carolina. You've had the only other ones we've come up with. And you gotta go way, back in time here in the late sixties, Doug Dickey, was the coach at Tennessee. He, he wants to floor, Florida. In fact, he played they played each other in the gator bowl that year, somebody mentioned Dennis Francioni, Dennis Francioni did leave Alabama to go to an, the only problem is all AM was not in the SEC at the time. I mentioned Houston note, I think used to not was let go by Arkansas and rebounded at ole miss. Gerry DiNardo left Vanderbilt in the in, in the nineties to go to LSU. And there may be another one or two. But those are the ones I can remember all the top of my head..

"Because for all of his accomplishments, as a head coach Gus malzahn, still seems to be the topic of a lot of fans and media alike about his future. What is this shooter? Yeah. Well, you know, I think that, that happens across the country, honestly, and it happens in our league the most, I think every coach I league is pretty much on the hot seat for the most part, the expectation of our fan base. All of our fan base is to win national championship. If I remember correctly, I think there's, there's nine head coaches right now, who have Costa national championship game. And coach malzahn is one of them. So he's also calling the place this year, which will be a think a much different environment. I think we'll see a much different team this year than we've seen in years past and the level of detail that he expects his players, and he has himself. I think you'll see that come come to fruition when we watch our team performed. What do you expect from him? Wow. Why should we hope? He doesn't have to throw any touchdowns. Catchy. Touchdown run. The ball through the GATT. I expect him that I spent to put forth, a pretty pretty flam not flamboyant, but a game plan. But it's going to really think, in my opinion, exciting he knows in you know that we run the ball a lot. But we run the ball at the past and here I am talking like a football coach. I'm I just don't even know how to hit a curve ball, but just making sure that our young men are prepared to play and that they're engaged from from kickoff to to, you know game in. And final question on that. But. You said all these coaches are on the hot seat. But, but he's, he's one of the few though, that according to reports came came close to not being the coach at the end of last year. I know that's not an easy subject to aggress, but it certainly hung out there for a very long time that like for you. You know, it's, it's, it's part of our industry, a think, especially in the southeastern conference. You have fans who are very passionate about college football. One of the things that gives me great confidence is the number of juniors who came back and, you know, the statements that they made about for, you know, taking wanting to come back to finish off, what they started knowing that they're going to, you know, they had a great opportunity to be in the NFL the young people. I think send a huge signal to the trajectory of our program and the fact that those guys wanna be back gives me great confidence, and it shows that their confidence and their coach and their program that we have a chance to be pro this year. I don't know what you're saying to play just over. You may have given us lot of raping news. Alan green. Thank you very much, appreciate you coming by. It's always good to see you. Thanks, paul. "Anyway, what I wanted to like two years. It's bothered me with Gus malzahn. I just want to ask your opinion. They'll go right ahead. You remember when kerryon Johnson got hurt dip after I think they'd beat Alabama and they play Georgia and he played in. Yes. And if a one to went to the national championship, and they put Alabama and after that, I played a lot of football. Do you think that that was a huge mistake of playing kerryon Johnson in that game? And that carry on probably pushed the point saying, I'm ready. I'm ready. I'm ready coach because he didn't use him as a decoy or any of that he tried to play the same old thing. Well, listen, I mean, it's it's the Alabama game. I are you are you supposed to I mean, I realize you're trying to get to the national championship game. But I I don't have a problem with it. I I had a problem with these offensive philosophy. But that's a whole another story. Yeah. The only team that I feel sorry for more than Florida, especially you. Remember the kick six with Alabama. That was one of the most exciting plays it ever seen. Yeah. Absolutely. And every year I look forward to the iron bowl and every year and disappointing. Anyway, it was a great interview with with everybody today. It was great. Thank you very much. Appreciate the call. Let's take a short break. We have a lot more to do on the program. "Yeah. I mean, I don't want to be a broken record here, but their enforcement division, which was once theory is now laughable, they don't go out and do anything they just I mean, they basically you bring it to them, and they may or may not decide to do. Okay. Thank you. All. Thank you very much. Really? Appreciate it. We're gonna head to a break. I think we need a break after the last couple of callers hope you'll give us a ring at eight five five two four to seven to eight five also gets his some conversation that we we've we're aware of involving a very low, very respected opinion on on Gus malzahn, and the Auburn the Auburn offense of philosophy all of that coming up next listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We welcome. You back want to play this for you. This was on earlier. This is Michael Mbarga well-known NFL scout and ex informer front office executive. He was this is called the GM shuffled to podcast he did with Adnan Virk in the subject is Jarrett stidham, and what his past was like and what he looks like from here on Jarrett stidham, the kid from Auburn. He's a five star four star kid at Ballard with art rows. And they have. The absolute fiasco that happens there, and then he decides to leave Ballard and goes to Auburn now really if the kid was smart he would've stayed at Ballard that rule because if he plays it with Matt Rua barrer, he's probably going to throw it. He might have been a first or second round pick. He's easily better than Daniel Jones. He's plays in an offense that would have highlighted what he could do that offense. And Auburn, I'm not sure what the hell is they run power. They run them balanced. Seriously, is might be one of the worst offense football. And so you can't evaluate a quarterback in it. Or you can't they can't train a quarterback there. That's the other thing. You can't train them. Some pretty stinging comments there about Gus malzahn offense from a former NFL executive, let's get more calls here at eight five five two four two seven two eight five. Sam is up next Sam go right ahead. Hey, good afternoon doing the show. Thank you very much. My heart goes out steward. Also, very touching story on modern history. I I don't know that I could be but his brave or have the attitude that he has. I think he's he's quite a quite a great individual. Thank you. Oh, absolutely hard Paul really wants to your opinion on the coaching scrub trid, Alabama. If you remember a few years ago, we were having since Kroger's with our quarterbacks the coke saving even said, he didn't wasn't heater. That's the offensive coordinator had quarterbacks also had enough time to devote those areas. So we brought in coach Dan Amos. We all saw some significant improvement. All you know, Jalen hurts. Everybody was me. So obviously that has been the visible coaching in their profited very much cotija in Venus and tutelage. And then I notice this year Kosar is back and also has the quarterback. In addition to the the offense, can you share your thoughts on that structure with us? Yeah. I thought it was a it was a loss. The danny. You know, departed a thought he had done a really nice job. I I have some questions about Sark his reputation is good. He was at his best when he worked with lane kiffin, but you're talking about two powerful personalities there. But I'm still not sure what to say. I mean, I know saving feels comfortable with him. He it was like he was getting the band back together again after having a much newbies last year who he clearly was not comfortable with. So from that standpoint. I think it's a good move. I don't think it really makes. I know this may sound silly. But I I think Alabama's offensive so good that that that Sark even if he's not as good in some respects is as kiffin or or even knows he's certainly good enough to to get this quarterback situation. Progressing down the road. I mean, he starts a season with us. The best of the second best quarterback in the country..

"Time. Let's get going. Roll those headlines let's say it's happening at Auburn university where they've got a quarterback race. Gus malzahn has narrowed it down to two. Joey Gatewood, Bo Knicks. They're too young guys. And that's the direction that Gus malzahn going what would have to be considered a critical year for the Auburn coach he needs to win any needs to win. Big is one of the most difficult schedules in the country, and he's putting it all in the hands of a freshman, but he has one of the best defense in the country. So that could be his saving grace. Meanwhile, west. Lessened Joe Moorhead learned in year one, you know, people thought it was less than spectacular year. He lost a Florida in that big time game against Dan Mullen, the former coach our folks were down on him. But if you if you go back in time. It was pretty decent for a first year. Coach now now Maoz on retired the trophy. He went to the national championship game came within thirteen seconds of winning it all in his rookie season, JIMBO Fisher not bad last year Sabin, not the Alabama season that went seven and five we're talking to LSU season when eight and four curbing so Mr. head. "I mean, let's not sugarcoat it if I if he doesn't have a big time year he's done. I mean, it doesn't matter what it costs. It doesn't matter. How it goes? But it if he fails to and I don't the only thing I don't know is where that line is UT is a fan. You could tell me more than than I can tell you. I mean what what do you need to see from him next year? Me. I if that's impossible. But to me Levin wins undefeated would be the only way. I would keep him. I mean, not happy with you might win. The wind is is not getting it Auburn, it's not getting at all. And I'm I'm so sick of fan support supporting mediocrity and call I mean, it's all about winning. I don't care. What college? What school you go to? It's all about winning, and you can't win and you can't develop and you can't compete. I don't want saving to retire. I want to beat him every year making quit or leave whatever. So if he's he's not he's not an elite coach, I think our school and some of talent is elite or could be but somebody has a problem with developing that, and we got it's a dumpster fi. So I mean coaches leaving look how many recruits four and five star recruits, Mr. Alabama's and stuff like that. You know? Another issue that I don't heard some people talk about is that there's a lot of concern about the season after next year and. I mean, that's really not relevant or germane right now. But but most of what you're saying. I've heard echoed. I mean, we're not ganging up on Gus malzahn. I mean, you're an Auburn fan. And I hear that time and time again Auburn fans are very unhappy. Right now, not everyone. But but some yes. Well, I appreciate your time. Thank you. And I'll be she'd get bit would get on here, and voice my opinion. "I agree with you totally with what you just said to the gentlemen from Florida. They are going to be giving us BULLDOGS a run for our money. I have watched a lot of Florida games this year, and their execution is really really good. And I'm very impressed with him as a coach the reason though that I'm calling is. And and I don't know if it was just me, and I wanted to call you prior to now is when the national game was was being played wash the SEC show prior. And Gus malzahn was on the air with you as well as our and others, and I felt there was a bit of uncomfortable. Nece is is that just me because I I know that this past year is speaking about him. There's been the buyout. There's been this Holly. That's an interesting observation. I. Did couple of shows with coach malzahn last week in. California. And I he was on our the the afternoon show. For a pretty long segment, which we really had a great time. I'm not I'm not making excuses because sometimes those interviews can be a little stilted, but got Gus is a very much a straight shooting coach and his answers can be interpreted that way. I I really don't I think I asked him one question and everyone asked him. But I didn't remember that. It could be that. It was so loud that I'm not sure I could hear what he said. But I remember the interview earlier, I in fact, I may have done to shows within a day he may have been on the college football live show as well. Or some other show. I did and he was very relaxed, but Gus malzahn to me. In spite of everything is more relaxed in interviews than I can ever remember him being. So I'm not contradicting what you said or saw you may have seen it. I may I may have been detached by that point. But but but he he he he also one thing though, he is facing a very big year one that I think is career at Auburn is clearly on the line. And and I agree, but I truly felt with you being on the far left with our and him being on the right? I really felt that I could see how uncomfortable. He was. And I felt like his rear end was on a flight. And I'd say there, I understand I will admit I've done some interviews with him where it was not easy because he is just a he's very black and white when it come. But but but I I will say this. I appreciate your call this. We had I think it was Gus and was it was a chip Kelly or Jim Mora. I can't remember which one it was. But when they were on the afternoon show from Levi stadium, he he was in fact, he may have had the most pressing comment of the day in terms of you know, we asked him is there a way to get to to. And and he felt like or was there a way to where it was? Where was excuse me where it was Alabama most exposed, and he and he said on the edges of the secondary..

"Because clearly neither one does they vote sort of trade it back and forth. And I think for the for the future of college football. That's exciting. Because not only do you have the Yankees team that you either love or you hate. But now, you've got a rivalry at the tip top of the sport that will be enormous every time they meet in the college football playoff. Whether it's in the national championship game or semi final. Let's let me ask you about the SEC because I think I think there's the obvious answer being Georgia that you know, which school is is closest to Alabama right now. I mean, we we seen the last two games. I think that's pretty easy to answer. But beyond that there. Couple of contenders who seem to be moving pretty quickly down the the homes. Stretch show. Where would you land with Florida with with Texas AM LSU had a big year? Auburn is who knows where Auburn is. Yeah. I mean, I I would probably go of all L spec to say, although I do think it's a little bit of a longer path than Florida just because of the division, but Texas saying to me I mean to to do what they did at the different sort of nine and four this year. It's not like a Kevin someone nine and four. It's a it's a a year in which they progress throughout the course of the season. They had the best run defense in the SEC, basically from the outset which has been a huge problem at Texas saying 'em jimbo's recruiting his tail off right now. So I think in terms of of, you know, death than ability to to play and win at that level. Texas say him is gonna be there at some point. And have staying power Florida might be more of an immediate turnaround. But I don't necessarily know if it can get to the point of beating Georgia consistently either they still gotta find a quarterback, I know fleet by Franks a a really good year by Florida quarterback standards at least decade, but. How much they trust him? I'm not sure they got a replacement players to the NFL. And and we'll see if Dan consistently recruit players that levels. But I do think tech to him in Florida. If you're looking for the two primary threat moving forward, those two are it. I think Florida, you know, because the rivalry with Georgia should be, you know, a factor a little bit earlier than Texas AM, which still has a giant Nick Sabin problem in the SEC west finally Barrett of the programs that have had success, recently or modern success. Who would you be the most concerned about going the wrong way? Oh, going the wrong way. Oh, man. If Auburn is going in the wrong way, if Auburn is one account that's having recent success than yeah. I would I would worry about going the wrong way. Yeah. I worry about Auburn going the wrong way because you know, getting Derrick Brown, and and back is huge, obviously. But they don't have a quarterback Gus malzahn, basically betting on himself is that going to work is the Purdue game a sign of things to come. Or was it just an aberration against the bad defense? But you know, they don't really have a running back. They trust the me. I just I would be very skeptical of Auburn just because of of Gus malzahn stubborness, and the fact that really they have not been able to develop a quarterback. And if you're looking at the transfer market, you know, where you're gonna go because outside of Jalen hurts anybody you really trust out there. Brandon wimbush. Austin KENDALL tape Martell. Not really. Always great to have Barrett's. Liam, barry. Thank you, very very much. Great to talk to you. Well. Good stuff from Barrett. Seasonal hurt later on the week. Predictions for the Iron Bowl - Alabama vs Auburn

"Look at a couple of other games. This may not take long the iron bowl Alabama certainly with Georgia next week. What does auburn's path victory? Well, I I guess the only thing I can think of is I've looked at some things this week early in the week is I'm falling in love with his Alabama defense. And I think what tasha poi- has done with a brand new secondary. And losing so many great leaders from a year ago. They have come a long way from Louisville to where they are getting ready for the iron bowl, obviously those game raps and just an understanding of their sign mints with their there. When you face Gus malzahn, uptempo offense, if they're able to get some first downs, and you've witnessed this and they're able to create a rhythm. They're able to kind of get you on your heels and with all the jet sweep motion pre snap movement. They can affect your eyes, and they can affect the and all of a sudden you bust in assignment, which has been somewhat of an issue with this this Bama defense this year you bust in assignment. And next thing. You know, you got to you got an H back. That's live out. Nobody saw him play action fake the jet sweep and there's a guy out in the flat. Nobody picked up and they dump it to him and he picks up twenty five yards. It's gonna take moments like that for all. I think to get traction. They're gonna stems going to have to have time. But they're gonna have to come up with fooling Alabama, kind of smoking Miers lot of tempo. A lot of distractions with the pre snap movement and hope that affects the communication about Obama. And that they they've bussed coverage three or four times when they do they gotta make big plays. And they got a score on that that that that to me is the only way I can envision them staying in this football game. The other thing is I think Alabama's been dealing with some guys that have been dinged up at receiver. They, of course with two and Jalen I think now they're starting to get healthy. And I think that offense that that used to be like a video game until the Mississippi State and LSU game. I think that Auburn is going to be very. Challenged when when Bama gets into their four wide receivers said Georgia punished Auburn on those nickel Bax safeties trying to cover those inside receivers would not surprise me at all to see to try to make that same thing happen attack. The man the man that all plays by going after the linebackers and going after those Nickelback so bam is going to win the game. But Gus malzahn, man, he saves a few wrinkles for this game. And I wouldn't be surprised if if they get a few busted coverages and make a few big plays in the past game.

Auburn Bouncing Back

"So Auburn bounces back given up for dead. They won a couple of games. Now that gives them a little momentum heading to Georgia Saturday. I didn't see that one coming. You know, they were down ten in that in that ballgame. And I really thought I was going to be over. So it was good to see them find something. It was good to see I think that leadership Jarrett's did him that football team kind of learned something about themselves down in that football game. Now, here's a little say, you can't run the football. So win this football team. Decides to put the ego aside and say, you know, what this is who we are. And until Gus malzahn says you know, what we can't run the football. Let's do what we do best. They're still gonna walk in there to Georgia. And they're going to try to be something. They're not they're gonna try to run the football. When they can't if they do that. They're not gonna come close. If they see you know, what we can do some things wish works. We can do some misdirection the back, but we can steal some is allow Jarrett stidham to throw the football go four and five lied that. That's what gives us the best chance to win. If they do that. They're talented enough on the defensive side that they could keep it close. They can make it a ballgame. But I just don't know if from an ego standpoint that staff can get together and say, okay, we can't run the football. What can we do? I think they're still going to try to beat their head against the wall. Go into Georgia run the football. And again, I just don't think that's going to do it.

College football season second half bold predictions

"Winning Auburn, losing Georgia, going down, LSU knocking off seemingly everyone, but Florida. And then there's the Gus. Gus malzahn told us Friday night in Auburn, a new season begins tomorrow. Well, the way it went. I don't think they want that type of season. So have we seen this horror movie before? Yes, we have preseason rank in fifteen and twelve. Of course, the Gus bus was not there in twelve that was the Chizik bus, but nevertheless fall from grace like you wouldn't believe. So where does it go? I think we all know the situation. Gus malzahn new contract courtesy of president. Stephen lease last December, seven years. Forty, nine million dollars. The buyout is thirty. Two million Auburn fans be acceptable to that. Will they embrace Gus malzahn. We'll find out as we go throughout the rest of the season. And what about those barking? Dogs? Darrow quit the show last week and the dog just had no fight. Nightmare in death valley. Seem pretty similar to the Auburn game last year and on the planes Kirby smart where you got, obviously we didn't play our best football game today. Now, responsibility starts and files of me thought LSU did a hell of a job. Their quarterback played really well. He got him in the right place on a lot of run checks, and we didn't tackle rule well defensively, which we've seen before and then I'll festively. We couldn't get any rhythm in the second quarter, and it's frustrating all day. We had some plays where we miss them opportunities, but we didn't make plays when we had to. And it would probably lost the kicking gang for the first time too. And that's not indicative of who we are, but I don't want to take anything away from new coach, Ron. They did a tremendous job. Their fans had a tremendous environment, and we got a standard at Georgia. We play too, and we didn't do that today. The good news is we get an opportunity to go out and get to work and get better. Okay. The well, the east is certainly up for grabs now and Florida, Georgia. In two weeks, the world's smallest can't say it. We're not allowed to. So Georgia is reeling did curvy smart, make the right move by sticking with Jake from many are wondering, many are questioning that we saw a little bit of fields not enough Cording to some Georgia fans that I know, but that's why we are here, and we will spend the next four hours talking about all of those situations.
