Apple's 40-Core Desktop Is Coming

"Apple's pro desktop could have up to forty course This rumor was broken by mark. Gurman about apple's impending arm plans and there's actually a handful of rumors. Let's get through all of them. So i up. Is that new macbook pros a fourteen inch and sixteen inch are shockingly coming featuring apple silicon. I don't think anybody saw this new. Macs with apple silicon. No no they were going to have the segmented line forever apple silicon and intel living in perfect harmony No no not happening. They have this like doing their own thing in house ever. They're going to have four thunderbolt ports. Hd my and an st card slot meant having hdmi back. How freaking awesome. Is that going to be for all the people that don't have hdmi on their laptop already. Like what an upgrade. I actually ran a dell. Xps thirteen to one as a daily driver for almost a year. I think and that was the thing that drove me most crazy. I thought it was going to be usb like a usb type and from time to time that was pretty obnoxious because my ubt is the taipei and i do like to use a mouse. If i'm actually sitting in doing something for a while at the computer. I don't really prefer wireless mice bluetooth. I find noticeably noticeably. Leg man i just love to see an industry standard for something like logitech slate. Speed properly tried light speed kills really well. Yeah but i mean you need a dongle. They're all taipei. So basically you're stuck with a dog goal no matter what if you want to plug a decent mouse into your laptop. But that wasn't the one that drove me crazy. The one that drove me most crazy most often was not having hdmi. Because you never know if you're going to be somewhere doing something

"It's mark gurman scoop tuesday though. It's not an apple scoop today. Sources are telling gherman. That amazon is developing wall mounted echo device with a large touchscreen that can serve as a smart home control panel a video chat device and a media player all in one quoting bloomberg the company's lab one to six hardware division is designing the device to be a digital command center showing users upcoming calendar events controlling accessories like lights and locks and playing music and video. A little more about the information given some some details on apple's alleged upcoming mixed reality headset sources have more details including a rendering this time of what they say is apple's vr headset. A lot of the details are similar to what we heard from mark gurman of bloomberg earlier last month It's expected to use fabric. Mesh run on an apple design chip cost a lot. Although we've got a number as much as three thousand dollars the headset may have more than a dozen cameras for hand. Tracking lied are sensors for room. Mapping and a are affects dual eight k displays and i tracking to save battery life. The information sources says apple would use aided rendering. that's when you only render in full resolution. They're considering are a combination of hand tracking i tracking a dial on the headset or something. They call a thimble like accessory. Oh boy well the thing that jumped out to me. I because we have talked about this before. This rumor has been swirling. I mean really for years but it seems to be more of a reality than ever. Is that three thousand dollar price points now again. It's a rumor and yes. Apple tends to make things that are similar to other products that are more expensive and then says but it's apple so you know we can do that sort of thing. Three thousand dollars. Oh my goodness Compare that to oculus to for three hundred dollars. That's a crazy price point. I don't know how the company could get away with such a thing.

Apple Mac bringing back the SD card

"Starting to look like this. Next mac book pro is gonna be the mac book. Where sorry is gonna be the mac book. We were wrong because we already talked about the fact that there maybe probably moving away from the touch bar. We already know the fact. They went to an older style keyboard design. Yesterday we talked about or maybe two days ago that they were going to go back to having a mag safe connector. Today's report we're gonna put an st card in there s the card reader so this was a long experiment for them. You know what it was. Well let me tell you what happened. They let everybody go and buy the minimalist design figured out how much they missed having features so that now in this one comes out and gives them all the features back they rush out like crazy real quick to pick those up. So it's our fault right. Yeah i blame you really do. Yeah i card reader. How nice would it be. Just having st carburetor. Maybe they do some even crazier and put an hdmi port and now just fantastic. Let's not get good type stuff. We're asking for here analyst. Ming cheek will outline his expectations for the new fourteen inch and sixteen inch macbook pro models. Coming later this year with the mag makes a charging connector the removal of the touch bar a new flat edge design and a return of more ports built into notebook for expanded connectivity. I mean i'm so sick. Docs and i'm so sick of dogle today on the macbook air. I watched mo- have to pull out the docking station and everything else. He was tangled up in wire. He had wires because he needed to as the and he wanted to connect an ethernet. And i don't think we're going to eastern at jack on here but still so the next s the card Part of it comes from bloomberg's mark gurman the upcoming macbook pros and example of apple's renewed focus on mac loyalists. The company is planning to bring back in sd card slot for the next macbook pro so users can insert memory cards from digital cameras. Yeah that's what you do with an s. d. card slot. The feature was removed all the way back in two thousand sixteen hundred twenty one. Now this is kind of unlike apple but who knows you never know what they're gonna do remember when they went for the trash can mac pro for example and then they completely backed off the next time around They there were some issues. People wished that they had more ability to upgrade that device switch out. Gp's and things that they wanted a traditional design and so apple went right back to the tower the regular style tower. So i think it's the right move. I don't think. I think if you had you had a plan and things didn't really pan out then that's fine. You know you admit it and you move on this trash can was kinda cute but it just wasn't ready for prime time. We have the rumor that the next model could be a little cube but that they're probably going to keep the full-sized towers as an option. But this is about the macbook pros and the two thousand fifteen macbook pro. Not only did it have an st card reader. It also had in hdmi port. And you're be ports. Which i know. This is the kind of stuff that you're most. Pleasant drinks are filled with. Well the sweet sweet for all kinds of sports. The we'll see what happens but this is a nice little touch here. I know

"But it's good. You know what last night least. And i said we're going to watch some uplifting stuff we wanna watch something happy and so we watched that and it was very. It's a it's a cd plus tunes. Rentals have become really conflicted for me. Like when i spent thirty bucks on wonder woman. I don't think that's tv. Plus i think that's still itunes rental money. It's it's very it's unclear. Yeah and was the roles available for basic your basic twenty dollars to get in everywhere right. Well it's one of those movies. That opened christmas day made a few million dollars in theaters but not enough to support it and they've released it as a as it expensive rental on one of services. Okay yeah let's see. What else airpods max battery drain. Apparently have you had any problems of the airpods max battery. I did not. But i know several people who did and all of them banished to fix it by. I think all but one managed to fix it just by doing the reset holding down the to on it and repairing it and it went away which makes it sound like. It was just bad. Bits to me sound silly. But that's what happens. Even when left in the special apple brassiere The headphones during the chaps drained from one hundred percent to nothing overnight which is not supposed to happen but yeah. That's interesting you know. I mentioned last week. That my Iphone twelve pro max. It stopped change charging on the mac. Safe adapter a couple of people wrote to me and lisa reminded me. She's oh remember we rebooted mining started it again and is known bug apparently and Rebooting will fix it. I rebooted the iphone and then springboard. But i couldn't there was no response was unresponsive was in any app so i rebooted again and now everything works again. So there's still reboot windows. Windows are still a few bugs in ios. I dunno where am fourteen point. Is that my on. I guess. I'm on the latest whatever that is is it three already. That might be one. They wanna fix Sooner than later. I'm just saying it's kind of what they have now. It causes so much. Anger is that these things are so complicated that everybody gets different bugs based on their configuration. The software they're running sorry the processes are running and even one percent of people. Having those problems are hundreds of thousands of people but like they'll fix wi fi. It'll fix it for the one percent. They were having problems. But introduce it for the one. For one percent of the people who weren't having problems and it's like whack a mole over a billion installs. Are you excited that now with you. They found out with a sim. Sim card adapter. You can remove the headband. So rene is already spent thousands on apple watch bands. Now we can customize band on his ear georgia started swapping the cups trying to steal them. She's like i like this better. But don't tell her she'll take they apparently There's even some code in iowa's fourteen point four A headband type identifier. It makes sense because both the cups and the head of the things that are gonna like the the the everything else is really solid but replacing. They headband replacing the cups. Not only lets you customize them if you want but also lets those things are going to need like from your hair or from wear and tear from your ears. They're gonna get grudge. Either gonna get bad and if you can replace that. It's better than replacing. The whole thing here is the best. Believe it or not during this past week. Cas happened. No one noticed here. The best apple related accessories according to macrumors it. Cas twenty twenty one. Pioneer introduced carplay Head unit that with a six point eight inch touchscreen and a high hideaway control unit Coming this summer no pricing yet so This is yet another car. Play head Had unit you can install on your car l. g. o. Lead ultra-fine monitor thirty one point five inches nice eight million pixels. Hdr individual pixel dimming. It's the first lead from lg That's why the romans about adult getting back into a a less expensive premium monitor. Kind surprised me a little bit because historically they seem to only put things on the market when they don't think that other third parties are making something that's suitable for For for their hardware and that now that there are so many other companies that are making really really good ultra hd displays a with really really great performance specs. It's it surprised me a little bit that they want to continue to make super expensive monitors like what this is. The only thing. I'll add to that. They've always just taken so far for you've they've taken those lt panels the exact algae penalty i mac and just re wrapped them but when they stopped doing that and they let lg do it on their own you can say that design was pedestrian but it was also bad like the first generation would interfere with wi fi routers because they didn't put tin foil on it. The second generation just had all sorts just resin threads of complaints about how poorly it works. And i think the and those what apple was telling in the apple had no nothing else to sell and i think they're yes i'll g you make very nice panels. You do not make very nice display. You will give us back those panels and we will take care of the rest again. Thank you i do. I do as i think about my new pro many. I am thinking about. I've you know the problem. Is i have an i mac so i really want one of those really wide plays in. Lg is showed off a thirty nine point. seven inch five k. to k. ultra monitoring. Yeah i really want that with my new mission control yeah One of the nice things about many of these displays is they have built in. Kvm so you could or you could split the screen and have you know a lennox box windows box and mac On the same screen. I really liked that flexibility. Some very intrigued went went. Went to go back to the sort of like a military bunker sort of adding displays once once have the ability. I'm down to only two screens because of On this station at least got the one that only supports one display. I used to have two displays up here and then another display down there. I kind of miss having that sort of like on-deck circle for things just kind of to have visual access to so. Yeah that's I've i've got so close to buying a huge super huge curve display. I've had that that thing in and out of my my basket so many times on so many different stores because it really does change the way that you work. So i'm like nick fury. Where like how does he. How does he turn his head like. It's exhausting. I can't do it. I one display right in front of me. And that's all i can focus on. I try to. I get too tired with the design display. So i'm going to go for the unit task. Leo displays going to be mine. You're no universe unit Marvel universe superhero. I guess i was playing gallagher. They caught me. If you have five devices to charge techy has released a five. Multi device charging station uses She and up to five devices at a time as well as i see usb c port so I guess you put your airpods on the she and the couple of phones and a couple of ipads and Just hope the house doesn't as a family. I think schools actually probably Kensington has a studio dock for the ipad. Pro has nice stilton wireless charging. That's cool isn't it. Yeah yeah particularly with so. Many people are using the ipad. probe essentially as a wireless mac display With the with the another. Mac on their on their same wireless network. That is such a nice tidy solution just to say nothing about how well it just simply works as a standalone thing. If you have a doc for it that lets you interact with a with a keyboard and a mouse and a very very natural way and give you all the ports of you're gonna expect in a desktop such a great way to get value out of this thousand dollar Tablets you might pay for three..

"Been trying to figure out exactly why apple thought it was so important. Why having ios app compatibility across two platforms was an important enough thing to actually make it into a formal feature. I don't think it's a bad idea. I just when you make i. It's just that when you make it voluntary like that. I think most people most developers are simply going to opt out and save themselves a whole bunch of problems Once you make something optional. That's the reason why apple the first mac didn't have function keys on the keyboard. Because you don't wanna make the mac support of the mac mouse optional developer whatsoever. So i'm curious. I'm gonna be curious to. I'm going to be keen to find out a year from now. How many people are actually using ios apps on the mac desktop. It's not a great experience. I know it started as a looking forward to it and again it's not. It's not terrible better than in many cases spare the nothing but in most cases the app that is available on the on the mac. Excuse me the of the app. It's available in iowa is also available in some way shape or form through either a through either desktop app or more likely a web browser app Sometimes a a browser app that can actually take his data with you. So i've haven't really. I haven't i haven't found it to be a as much of a mind blower as i hope that it was going to be. Yeah i wonder. I wonder if they thought there would be more pushback from the loss of boot camp and at this would in some way be the big boot camp lake story like we went to intel and you run windows apps. We went to Apple silicon and now you can run ios apps and just nobody really cared that much or see or i could just as easily see Because of the way that apple has been very very well managing architectures on its roadmaps. If if some some couple of engineers figured out that hey look we. We built a special version of mexico. Where if you click one button. You can turn out a mac amac compatible version of this ios app. And now we've mac iowa's apps running on the on the mac. It seems to work. We just did it for fun. Also because there's something more important than he actually didn't want to do like solving somatic save problems And then it just got enough. Traction that people said you know what it costs us. Nothing to include this We'll we'll just we'll have to deal with some a public relations with their development community but would be a really cool thing to put into the announcement. If we're a- for explaining why we're ditching the most famous and most popular processing platform on the world in the world for something that we'd whipped up ourselves and our back in our back bunker. That would be another another little feather in our cap. I forgot i mentioned in windows weekly last week. I forgot to mention on this show. you can now run. Sort of windows on your m one macintosh using The pre release of parallel. I'm running right now parallels And then you have to use the windows. Ten pro insider build four windows on arm Some things were great. Office runs Just fine. I'm not sure if it's a Pwa version of microsoft word but it runs quickly and and so forth in it. And it's you know it's it's completely doable. And then some things don't Like calculator Paul throughout says that's because it's a thirty two bit version of calculator and so it's just not going to run but You know it works and so for people who are. You can't run the microsoft store either. Oddly enough again to bid. I think but edge clouding everything like you relate to so close to windows being a web service that they're not really that intent on doing any of this anymore. Yeah i think that's completely right. That's microsoft you're you're saying and i think that's absolutely right but you can do it and So we were promised this back in june. Ww dc And parallels does. It's a pre release version of parallels and it's a pre release version of windows. Ten on arm surprise anyone if like next. Wbz the announced microsoft microsoft recently announced windows for asia and it runs great on mtv. Mac right right Yeah it's kind of fun to run it. There's a coherence mode as well. Which means you can run the some windows apps like word While you're as a window on the macintosh so you have access to both. If you've been hoping as many of us had that apple at some point would make messages available on android or windows. Maybe there's some good news apple last actually. Twenty nineteen began hiring engineers to quote build the next generation of media apps for windows and now they've delivered. Apple is working on music. Podcast apps to appear on the microsoft store sources told nine to five mac that apple's been testing these in a private beta That's all we know. That's ease. I mean like i believe the the message like all that stuff is very happily happily and eddies. And he's already has their entire own software development team. That does i work and music podcasts. And all of those apps. And i think once they got music on android they just had to. It was just like. Are we going to do it or not. And they use all very similar frameworks and design and implementation and everything so letting has ever non trivial. But i think those are the the nearest next neighbor apps for apple to move over as their services. I wouldn't be surprised tv app. Go out loud so much audience for that. Yeah and they make money. They can't if if they really want to gain traction especially with the content that they're creating they're not gonna do it by being world famous in western massachusetts. They have to the world and that means that they're going to have to support android and some fashion. They're going to have to support windows in some fashion Or else they just sort of admitting that we don't know how to know how to write code if we can't control absolutely everything from top to bottom patently not true. I said they make money on apple tv plus but not yet. They've now no not yet soon someday. Definitely definitely not yet. Those of us who have free. Subscriptions are now extended through july of this year member expense. They haven't been able to make her launch almost any new content and it doesn't look like that it's changed significantly right for them. So if you bought an apple a new apple iphone or a apple watch and apple tv in twenty nineteen you were given a year that theoretically expired november twenty twenty. They extended that to february and now extended again. And i have to say I'm watching servants season. Too good I watched watch the tom. Hanks movie News of the world. That was on apple. Tv was it. I think it was twenty dollars..

At what point does is our is our congressional regulators going to say it is part of your responsibility to. I know that. I know that you are the privacy company but this is this is. This could be their way of saying. This is why we are arguing that you should not have end to end encryption. Because you yourselves are going to be made responsible for any damages to body or property that happened as a result of private communications upon your network. If that's what you want to happen then great hold onto your end end encryption. Otherwise give our back door and let us police have for you so this is it's it's a long conversation that is probably going to be had. I hope it doesn't result in bad decisions and bad laws being made but this is part of a very long. This is like vatican two almost a long long process of evaluating. Here's how we've decided to regulate technology for the past twenty or thirty years. How should we continue to operate to allow technology to operate in the next twenty or thirty years is there something. Are there things that were great ideas. In the mid ninety s that are now proven to be not in the best interests of our society or are there some things that are like the first amendment. Just sacrosanct we're just going to have to work with them so these conversations that we're just gonna have it's they're also protected by section two thirty And yeah you know as a as we've mentioned so many times section. Two thirty is a very important part of the communications decency. Act that gives us. I should say you know. We're we're protected by two thirty as well immunity from lawsuits over content posted by other people on our chat room and in in a co comment sections on our forums Apple has kind of that protection as well. They're not responsible for the stuff that's on telegram anymore than the phone. Cubbies responsible does parlour. Yeah but apple does say and it's interesting apple does have a rule You know in their app store there's has to be well. I'll read the washington post said Apple has to have a method for filtering inappropriate content out it has to have a way for users to report it. They also have to provide contact information and have the ability to block abusive user from the service telegram meets. All those standards parlor. Never could never did So in this in this forcing out go ahead. It's also worth pointing out that. These are uniquely american things both of both sexual activity and freedom of like the freedom of speech that the way that government cannot impose. Censorship are uniquely american. And we're seeing now internationally especially in the eu poland recently especially poland. Recently are getting incredibly angry about that situation. The us has become a safe haven for social networks because of these unique protection that they're providing and d. Was on the verge of they work past it there. In the verge of implementing rules that are going make. The world almost split in half between between those two states. we there's a great conversation On our twit forums Www that twit community As part of the conversation after last sunday's twitter about because i had said the the first amendment is relatively unique but other countries do have some kind of like that Jamesy said the uk has the human rights act quote. Everyone has the right. Freedom of expression is rachel include freedom to hold opinions and receive and impart information ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. So there is. There are some first amendment like rules. In other countries we often also have hate speech laws which would contract which would not be allowed and this that in fact is exactly what the human rights act says. The exercise of these freedoms carries with it. Duties and responsibilities may be subject to such formalities conditions restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary democratic society and that's congress shall make no law exactly and that's the exact difference and angela merkel in germany and Emmanuel macron and france. Many others have said. Why don't they have a law. Excuse me why don't you guys have a live we that's the first amendment protects against then. Sorry about that. it's no they. Some people misunderstood when they said they didn't think the twitter should be in the habit of banning politicians or should have the ability to ban politicians because they believe the government should have done that long ago. And that's a completely different. Yeah kettle bees. They're opening their in germany Big d who's a brit living in germany also regular on our community forums says it doesn't germany doesn't stop you from saying what you want and private. That would be hard to do but you can't promote hatred or violence in public including ratio racism racial hatred incitement of violence murder. And i think that the first amendment does not prevent laws against those things you know. There are laws against hate speech. Well there's liable laws as slander laws in germany. I believe you still see. You still can't display nazi paraphernalia in the us of not being allowed to show confederate paraphernalia for for example would not. I don't think that's workable under us. Yeah yeah it's it's an interesting this is. This is a conversation that's been going on. They should widen the since since the capital Insurrection kind of be frankly. It's so confusing people outside the us because it seems like in the us. All this stuff is so flexible. It's like we believe in freedom of speech. And if you don't give it to us we're going to nationalize your company. That's really hard medical mar- even even we can't puzzled as anybody. Hey here's some good news. Smartwatches may be able to detect. I should actually get i. I wish there were an app for this covid. Nineteen days before symptoms appear This is a Study from mount sinai found the apple. "Break thank you. I t pro tv good job. Good job all right. Moving on from the rumor mill into the real world. Actually maybe i haven't had a whole lot of luck in the real world of the past maybe stacey land. Let's stay in fantasy land. The information says apple is planning a podcasting subscription service looking at what spotify's doing but they also cautioned. That apple looks at a lot of things doesn't mean they're going to do it. Yes everything every thousand forever. Yes yeah what do you think. Are we gonna sit up straight you know. At least i said we should call them. I said that apple's never they don't want what we do. That's not the kind of thing they'll do affect. I wonder if they'd even do technology. Podcasting the hot topic now and podcasting anyway. Is you know these true crime. Fiction show suspense shows that kind of joe rogan podcast. Yeah i mean. Let's jake paul. Paul rudd problem like you you you you have to hook up your to hook up your wagon to people who are getting huge audiences oftentimes because they are dealing with very very a fiery content say And you're kind. Yeah i think spotify. Saying jeez joe rogan deal. Was that a good deal. So we've gone there. And joe rogan might be saying that. Yeah well he got them hundred billion dollars. I don't think he's gonna think he's got howard stern money. he's fine. yeah that's a lot of watches. But apple's e is very very cautious about their reputation right as well as much so as damage. Yeah so that. That is a challenge. It would be interesting if they decided to produce their own podcast though like what if they decided do their own newscasts to do their own arts channel Two as a complement to all the other stuff that they're all the other stuff they're doing with content creation now that they have a studio for doing. Tv and movies. They could have. They could set up a radio studio simply say we have an idea for a twelve part radio documentary or we have an idea for a season lot. We're going to buy the rights to Neil gaiman next book and turn that into a fully produced twenty two episodes audio series. That's much more likely the apple tv plus model. Except it's audio. I think that's exactly what my only worry. My only concern is that they'll do not that they'll buy new games book. They'll make that into a tv plus series and then pay neil gaiman to host a podcast about it like the podcast that they were doing for. Hbo does a lot of those. They had to wash. podcast and they had a Was the a podcast with craig. Mazin and they. They have so much content or they don't bother to podcast really well like they have so many music centric interviews and things that they're only starting to sort of get up to speed with podcasts. But i think they will. They will look at it as well. I guess it depends on who they got to run it. But my guess is it'll stay with eddie cues Division and they will do it very much like like other entertainment brand have done it that makes me feel like the podcast. Nerves inside apple. We'll get to run. Apple has tried to set aside the half billion dollar vernet ex judgment and failed They now given you add interest in royalties total payout To lawsuits could be over. A billion dollars On friday a judge in tyler texas the home of so many of these lawsuits rejected apple's request for a new trial and several other claims They they apple said the ver- next as verna xs award should not exceed one hundred thirteen point. Seven million dunno where they got that from and that jurors should have been told that the us patent and trademark office had deemed verna xs claims unpatentable. Yeah that might have helped them in their decision So anyway but this is. This is exactly what happens in these cases in the in east texas. It's yeah the dockets. The rocket docket eastern district of texas. So you know it's not like abba can't afford it but it's kind of annoying. You can't negotiate you have to make you have to make sure that anybody comes after you. They're going to have to actually take this court they going to have to. They're not going to get a quick payoff or else. I i think in the long run. This is even if they have to occasionally write a check. It's going to be better from the long run out of terms of apple is being also sued by a group who said hey you cut off parlor. You should curb telegram to okay well. This parlors problem was the lack of like again apple. Make people are lying. The wrong but apple said you need content. Moderation and twitter and facebook have shown that you don't even need good content. Moderation something you just show them that you couldn't do that right. Telegram is not a public forum. Like you can't just go online to telegram and see a bunch of post. It's a messaging service. It's completely different in kind. You can argue. It's got much as content. But it is nothing like like. I keep seeing parlay. Because i live in montreal. But it's nothing like parlor but that's of that's the door you open when you when you start doing this The lawsuit was filed by the coalition for a safer web a nonpartisan group that advocates for technologies and policies to remove extremists content from social media the president. Marc ginsburg is a former. Us ambassador to morocco. They complained about telegrams role in hosting white supremacists news agency another hateful content. And that's kind of the nature of telegram. You can create a groups nature of the internet like they're finding these people in like like what are the high school sports forums. They're just going everywhere they can to try to to try to hide and get around this. And the other issue with parking say again parlour they had zero op sack had zero security. You could get every post deleted or otherwise just by incremental the post count by one and now i believe they're being hosted on russian servers so there were issues with it beyond like there was in fact. Ben thompson made an excellent point. He said this is. This is not this is just the market saying as the market can often does. We don't want to do you know and we. We don't want to do business with these guys so you know you go somewhere else. That's that's that's called the free market. But i think that the i think the the apple doesn't have the same situation with telegram with parlor. I as as rene said the biggest problem wasn't so much that they were as radical content being put on that site they were being warned and approached by apple And other providers saying hey look this is a problem take down or take to clean up after your dogs here and getting absolutely ghosted by them and they really had no nothing else to do They could possibly do however this is going to open up new conversation and twenty twenty one and beyond about what responsibility does an app store does Amazon.

"The mets apt. Why could want this look every time. She refers slow jam. That's jam okay. The upcoming products are part of apple's radical. Overhaul of its personal computer lineup. Yeah which is you know apple silicon and we had hoped that there would be new designs. Well there'd be new the i mak redesign. Yeah will they be new. Yes we think they're going to be new Laptop redesigns as well right. He did another article he did three articles. He did that when he did the pro article and he did the flip iphone heart of so. This is the one that says the magnetic charging you think it will be. I think he's saying mag safe right. It'll have a breakaway is just again like not charging the other charging cable So that's a very interesting rumor because it does On the on the macbook pro. Because you always see when apple has an idea that they know everybody loves the they will they will keep that thing on it until like stops working when something never really worked to begin with like a if there was a touch bar. that people are Okay if there's a keyboard the people an okay. If there was a charging connector that people were like okay but the people who didn't like the change where never never stopping being vocal about it the next generation of hardware. If none of those things appear that you know that this is they're saying not mea culpa but okay okay we we don't we don't have to beat ourselves up about it but it turns out that. We made a lot of unsafe bets. Three or four years ago. Andy were right on that right on that also right on that. Let's just move on They he does say that. The new laptops will have a new chip. It won't be the m one it'll be the next generation versions of apple's has back processors upgraded with more cores and enhanced graphics. The person said asking not to be named dizzy. These devices will mark apple's first high end laptop high end. The important part here to move away. From until because these these the these m. one of pros and macbook airs are really as you said a number of times. Just kind of a refresh of the low end the lowest end apple laptops I have to say i. I don't feel like i'm using a low end machine. I feel the m one is so fast that you don't you feel like i'm in the pro line. Which makes very excited about what the pro line is gonna offer. Yeah when when they decide that they want to have the they wanna hold the mantle of un un arguably the fastest desktop workstation. You can buy in a retail setting. Boy we're gonna we're gonna see some big clouds of dust when they decided they want that title because the the the the the ceiling for this is pretty damn high with their hardware. A major change to the new computers will be how they charge rights. Mark gurman over the past five years. Usb companies now bringing back. Meg safe Would it be a usb c maxine. Yes right it'd have to be or no well. So this is the thing like the c defines the plug and its usb three point and they just renamed everything like two weeks ago they renamed. Everything is usb three point two baking even worse like three point three point one three point two or three point two of some variety now. It's it's appalling. I liked having the three point. Two usb three point two each things to be can be charging or for data. Yes but now. It sounds like they're going to have a charging port that's distinct yes which will be on the wrong side. Every time i wanna use it used to be. I don't know if. I think that's the right way to go. Could they could do a breakaway usb. Three point two type c saying right. They could have a breakaway. I think there's third parties things like maybe make a puck and let me attach it magnetically any part of the mac interesting. No inductors charging is not fast enough for one hundred watt of i know yeah well i mean there are there are some phone companies that go really ludicrously fast. But what they do. Is they separate the battery out independently and then charge each part of the separate battery thereby reducing the total health and a total volume of the battery. They can advertise real fast. Charging right yeah. Apples also planning says goldman redesigned macbook air. But that's not expected to be released until long after the next mac book pros also the touch. Par apples tested versions. That remove the touch bar from its laptop keyboards testing. She calls at. It's going away. We'll go sorry kuoming cheese that that it's going away completely as he thinks are getting rid of it. My thing is that regardless of how you feel whether you love it or hate it. Apple announced in two thousand sixteen and promptly done nothing with it. if not advanced it not interested. It hasn't gone to any more computers. Not available on desktops. They haven't added hap- to it at all. It's just stuck there and that does not seem like a technology. Apple's engaged with it felt like it was a stealth way to get the arm chips into the intel. Macs the t. One and later t to chips into the intel macs And now they don't need anymore so minor standing just started off because they wanted to put touch id and and they had to put right what was essentially an s chip at the time and they were concerned about security so they wanted to discrete display exactly for the price so nobody could try to hack the price that you're agreeing to and then it sort of escalated from there until we got a whole car. It's it's it's time is gone. It's done it's over. Third article apple preps next mac chips with aim to outclass top end. I should point out. Mark almost certainly does not write his own headlights. Somebody a bloomberg does that faster performing. Intel's best i love. I do love hearing stuff like that. It kind of are already though. I mean it was only the very latest rising three that were currently single core performance. Competitive with bmw. So it's not. It's not a high bar. I mean there are things like there are certain tasks that the intel chip but some people still prefer intel. amd for gaming for very specific reasons but in in general. Apple's doing really really good architecture Actually that wasn't the third that was. That was an older iphone. Flip the iphone flip. Oh tell me about that. What's the iphone flip. So he and jon prosser both put out stories. This week Originally apple and for years they were working on a screen foldable version. And now they're both talking about working on using samsung style. Foldable foldable display technology. To either make something like the galaxy. Fold or in. John and mark's maurice articles something like the flip that would open up into a iphone twelve pro max style device and the reason. I like this so much is beyond the fact that we're human we fold everything we fold wallets. We fold pizza. We only animals fold pizza. I want to say yes the other way around only animals don't fall all right. I'm confused here in new york. It's nice about this is that apple is built this infrastructure for their software. Excuse me one of the biggest problems with the foldables on the android side is that google is having to work hand in hand with every manufacturer to fit every different screen size and model and transition and the app developers haven't done a lot and there's really positive tablet apps where apple from the apple watch interface and app store to ipod. Os and that huge catalog of ipad apps they really can use size classes and auto layout to propel you through different size of app experiences. So if it's like an apple pocket watch where it looks a little apple watch interface on the outside and then you open it up and you know the iphone interface or an iphone where you open it up and suddenly you have the ipad version of every app except for instagram..

I three ten ten eleven ten one. one zero. You eight gigs. Ram and one hundred twenty five gigs of storage for six hundred ninety nine dollars a shortage of semiconductors affecting automakers. Volkswagen said last month that they needed to adjust first-quarter manufacturing plans around the globe because of the shortage. Now honda says it will cut domestic output by about four thousand cars this month at one of its factories in japan nissan is adjusting production numbers for its note hatchback model and ford has moved up previously planned downtime at a kentucky plant for its sport utility vehicle factory to the jin chips all right. Well we're talking about cars. Let's talk about the the apple car. Yeah a lot of rumors as of late will really over the last few years. But but but the rumors had resurfaced recently and hyundais. Now talking to apple about kerr's so says the company hyundai representative told cnbc quotes. We understand that apple isn't discussion with a variety of global automakers including hyundai motor as the discussion is at its early stage. Nothing has been decided. Korean economic daily said that apple suggested the arrangements and hundred was reviewing the terms that involved e production and also battery development hyundai has had his own battery platform called e. g. m. p. going into production later this year. So might be saying what you're doing. Reuters sources say that apple would like to produce a passenger vehicle by twenty twenty four however might not be that date bloomberg's mark gurman reports in thomas e. v. from apple is five to seven years away and michio recently said he wouldn't be surprised if it takes until twenty twenty eight. Yes what's probably going on. Here is apple and i think this significant part has decided to start investigating how they would build. Whatever it is. They're going to build whether it's a whole car or an integrated platform and they're going to different manufacturers and parts suppliers and folks like magna including hyundai. And saying what are you got. How can you help us with this. And is a great company for this because they make parts they make systems. They make full cars. There's all kinds of services in the conday company that could play a part with apple so it may not be. That apple knows what they want from hyundai. It may just be that they're going and saying hey let's talk. You do a lot of the kinds of things that we think we're going to need. I'm pretty excited about this. I just got my first hyundai ever this year and my perception of this story was weight but hyundai currently uses android auto and a lot of their their cars. So i would love to see. How apple would integrate Hyundai's current technologies into something that is very useful for that apple ecosystem not just looking at e itself but also the The the systems inside of it the controls in how they would manage that four a driver and a passenger in the car. Yeah i mean. I think that's one of the big questions that i have is okay. Let's say let's say it's hyundai that that applet ended up working with with clearly not set in stone at least from what we know at this point. But let's say it's the companies for kicks. Let's imagine that that's what it is. Yeah it is. It is an apple car that hyundai produces a lot of parts for the way that works with lots of other companies to produce other hardware for apple. I mean that that's the loftiest kind of goal that we're looking at and maybe that would take till twenty twenty eight at you know if if apple was lucky. I think it probably has more to do with like you said shannon not that you know android auto wouldn't still be prevalent in a lot of passenger vehicles but maybe at some sort of it's a special relationship. It's it's a special kind of os inside a car that is supposed to you. Know i don't know move some merch because What apple is providing on the software side is is. Is that much more interesting. I really don't know if you look at that. Bloomberg article mark gurman sources are saying that Tesla people that apple has hired are working on things like interior exterior. Drive train stereo. Desist the kinds of things. You need when you're building a car not carting a software platform so then the question becomes is it the apple car period. Maybe hendaye makes it. Maybe somebody else makes it. And you know they'll figure out how to distribute it or is it the apple car by sunday and you go to hyundai dealership to buy it the way you went to an. At and t. store to an apple iphone but it's really apples car in cooperation with sunday. Are there multiple partners. I mean that's all the kind of stuff we're waiting to see but it really does feel like we have gotten to the point where this is no longer just yeah. They're working on project titan. They don't know what they're gonna do to. They have an idea. It's more than just software and they're working out the details. Maybe they don't even know that yet. Well i'm interested to see what happens but we also have some other news. Security among the systems impacted by the solar winds attack is the electron filing system. Used by the us federal courts at investigation is underway to determine if confidentiality of documents filed with the courts was breached and as a result starting wednesday confidential documents filed with the courts will be stored on standalone systems. Not uploaded big difference so these are documents sealed from public access because they contain sensitive information like investigative techniques identities of informants and a lot more other. Us federal agencies affected included the justice department the state treasury and energy departments as well solar winds has engaged. The krebs stay most security consulting group to help deal with this attack. That firm was formed by alex. Stamos the former chief security officer at yahoo and facebook and chris krebs the former director of the us cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency or sisa. So krebs was fired last month. By the president after finding no evidence of with voting systems in the twenty twenty election. Yeah stamos first of all brilliant for those two to team up and smart for solar winds to engage them for what they say is Helping with transparency with companies that are affected But this we we are not done finding out how bad this is. There are reports that there may have been other ways that this whoever is behind this intruded beyond just solar winds. They're finding evidence of that. They have not been able to root out the people that got into this vulnerability from all systems yet. They're still in there in a lot of cases. And you know this. This kind of confidential information is exactly the kind of thing you fear that someone would get intruding into a government system informants investigative techniques that you can now learn from to evade being prosecuted or caught yourself. That's that's crown jewel type stuff it's it's very interesting. In fact krebs spoke on record saying that it could potentially take years to figure out how deep the solar winds attack actually went and how many different kinds of infrastructure. You know brands and everything that it might have affected so this is not something. That's going to die anytime soon. I'm glad that they are reaching out. Craig's and stay most though because that i agree with you tom. It's excellent. excellent team roku made a few interesting announcements roku says. Npd data shows that the roku s was the top selling smarter operating system in the us and canada in two thousand twenty thirty one percent market share in canada. Thirty eight percent in the united states That's pushed the samsung's tizen number two. At least we don't actually know samsung's ties and was number. One in two thousand nineteen also announced a wireless soundbar reference design that uses wifi for its roku. Tv ready program remember. Last year roku announced the program which had a designed for wired. Sound bars. The program includes tcl. Pokemon on an element has just announced. They'll join as well with two point. Two point one ready sound bars roku tv ready to expand internationally later this year as well. But here's the big roku news roku has agreed to acquire exclusive global distribution rights to more than seventy five Shows documentaries some of which had not been released before qube shutdown. So there'll be some new stuff that nobody's ever seen after their exclusivity deal expires. That'll happen in a bit more than a year. Depending on the show roku will still have the rights to show the content just not exclusively until thousand twenty seven the content will have to be presented in original increments of ten minutes or less. The deal doesn't let them stitch it altogether. The content will be added to the more than forty thousand movies and tv shows already available. In the roku channel shows include from Be anyway punked. Murder house. Flip and dummy which stars anna kendrick. I never watched the new punk. I heard had its moments. The whole qube thing. It's really interesting to me because it was sort of like. It crashed and burned so quickly. And there's a lotta shot and friday around folks in the industry about it. And i think that's not because qube was doing things wrong. It was because the company had raised so much money time. Because you know. They had meg whitman. Jeffrey katzenberg who are you know. Heavy hitters and there was a little bit of like you are being to embassies and therefore you shall fail. The company did fail and the idea that some creators will have a new life on another platform shows. That just don't even saw but people still worked on. And maybe you're really good. I think this this makes a lotta sense and good for roku to get exclusivity for at least a few years so does roku have to wait at all in order to start showing this content or can happen immediately. I don't know when the start date. Whenever the deal is you know goes into effect. Then they'll immediately be able to to show it so you know within a month or so it would be my guess anyway but no they. They don't have once. The deal is actually in effect. They don't have to wait. What's going on here. is that the baby. Production companies own the rights to their own stuff but they have a two year exclusive for each one of their shows with qube and those two year exclusives are now being transferred to roku so roka will be able to have the exclusive for the remainder of whatever. The period was with quick. That's why it's more a year. Exclusively goes away then they still have the right to show it until twenty twenty seven but the production companies that made it can now start shopping at around to other places as well so the production companies do hold the content and remember this is just the content. Qube is still in a over. Its turnstile technology which is holding it up from selling its technology and i would expect once it resolves that lawsuit should resolve it in a way that they still hold their technology. They'll sell that to so this isn't the last you're going to hear could be selling off a part of it. I would imagine. Gotcha yeah that whole. The whole technology part of qube was again was an ambitious thing that was released at a very inopportune time in twenty twenty when everyone was like. We're just sitting at home like we don't need this like mobile phone technology. It's like cool that you can shifted around but you can't even cast thing. I mean the company did fix that pretty soon after allow about she was just. I mean it's just did. The timing couldn't be worse but that technology when you think of it in a variety of other form factors such as monitors that swivel talked about some of those yesterday. I don't know that qube or tiktok or snapchat or all of the stuff where we're like. Oh yeah that's the. That's the portrait view. Rather than landscape view. That works for certain apps is is is all that this is four. I think there's more to it So we'll see what happens and there's patents and things that are always valuable because you can use those to extract some concessions and money and stuff. So yeah expect that all to come join the conversation in our discord which you can join by linking to a patriotic. Can't get in there and talk about your favourite qube shows with all the other discord folks. Just lincoln to your patriotic out at patriotair dot com slash. Dpd s all right shannon. How do you clone a security key. Well i i will say please do not stop using your security keys because of this story i will explain it. Researchers from ninja lab published a paper on thursday showing how you could clone a google tightened security gate this is a two factor authentication key which is very similar to a you. Be key that you have to plug in or tap in order to access an account after putting in your username or your password credentials. Were both so in order to pull off the clone. You would need physical access to the key for about ten hours. Sometimes a minimum of ten hours just kind of depends on how good you are at this. About twelve thousand dollars worth of equipment physical equipment and custom software and some advanced skills in electrical engineering and cryptography as well. So you have to remove the chip and then take measurements of it at a being registered on each account that you went to attack the measurements observe electro magnetic radiation as the chip generates digital signatures that let the attacker slowly deduced the private key so measurements take about six hours per account. That's not including taking apart. The original tighten security key putting it back together. Then you need to seal the chip back into its case. You also need the targets password in order for this to work. So the reason it works is because of vulnerability in the security hardware chip residing within the google titan key and that is called an eighty seven hundred x by this company called. Xp if it's exploited in attacker could grab the elliptic curve cryptographic private key for the account and the same chip is actually found in other two factor. Authentication physical tokens as well like There's a ubiquity that it's found in but chances of attack or very very minimal given the scope of the attack so if you do all of this without the target ever noticing then they would never duplicated key but again given the scope given how much it costs and everything behind the scenes probably when it happened to normal user. The point of these security keys being the best way to use For two factor. Is that you can't even get at your private key right you. Nobody has to be able to get in there like the chip. Just doesn't make it available so the fact that they were able to get in there and get it is huge. You know the fact that they were able to do this is significant. But i mean if you're not a target of an advanced persistent threat. You don't need to worry about this. No one's going to go to the trouble to do this. And even if you're a target. I would guess shannon that most of them probably would be able to notice if someone took their key for ten hours or more you. You likely likely would especially since a lot of people with hardware tokens like google titan will stick them on a on their keychain for example like with their house keys or whatever wherever they keep all those personal physical devices that they don't want lost or stolen they keep them all on engaging so if somebody was to take one of these out of your purse out of your gym locker wherever it might be and remove it for like ten hour street minimum. You would likely know that this would have happened. the neat thing about these chips inside of these. Google tightened security keys. And any other cryptographic hardware tokens like these is that. Even the manufacturer doesn't know the private key so the fact that they were able to find vulnerability on these specific chipsets is really interesting. And i think that's the important bit of that. Is is even though the google titan like the end all be all of really excellent. Two factor authentication. There's always. The potential that vulnerabilities can be found. So i'm happy that this research came out. It's so fascinating and it's so interesting in this means that an x. p. and other security chipset manufacturers that sell these teeny tiny chips to google or whoever the company might be They can build on this. They can research and figure out what the next version of their chipset needs to entail in order to not be vulnerable to this again in the future. Yeah i mean this is really a good security story right. We finally figured out because there's always a way right. We finally figured out the way you get the private key out of a security key and guess what it's really hard takes a long time and now that we know it we can make it even harder and hopefully you know push that barrier out even further and even if somebody did have time to do this and you didn't notice i was reading the paper because i'm a huge nerd and they go as far as using fuming fuming nitric acid in order to get like melt the epoxy off of the original google titan. How are you going to put that back together. In order for somebody to not notice like there's a lot of intricacies with this attack in order for it to actually be pulled off so chances are very very slim that somebody would be able to pull off so again as i said at the very beginning. Don't stop using your google tightened security key if you have one keep using it because chances are you would never be attacked with this. Just just know if you haven't seen it in ten hours look together strange. This is going to be in a movie though. I'm calling that shot right now. We're gonna we're gonna see this movie. Where like i hope so. Somebody goes into surgery and they take his key and they go out and do all this and they slip it back in because ten hours later. He wakes up from anesthesia on something like that. I just hope they talked to the researchers so they actually show it off right. Yeah Sony tv and audio announcements Starting with details for its own tv lineup. Sticking with lead ravi x four k and k. Tv's will support four k at one hundred twenty hertz variable refresh rate vr as well as a l l m low latency mode and e arc. These are all things that are important. If you've got a ps five now you've got sony. Tv they can go. That sony also has an improved a chip that is going to improve the picture and sound positioning. So it aligns with what you see on the screen. Sony's master series. Tv's will come with a sensor that adjusts white balanced immense. Your ambiente color temp. You don't have to do anything they'll just do it. Also an aluminum heat shield. That will make for brighter. All the sets will support. Hdmi two point one. Another big one for ps five dolby vision hdr angle tv. Sony also announced. It's three hundred sixty reality audio platform if you're not familiar with three hundred sixty degree audio places instruments and vocals in a virtual sound field around your head but using just the one speaker so you can do this in an amazon echo or google. Home sony will start streaming video with three sixty audio later this year. Starting with concert from zara larsson on january eleventh. And somebody's gonna make speakers that support this. It'll be may supported by other speakers as well. But sony is going to put out the are five thousand and three thousand They've got that dark cloth. Surface that all these speakers seem to have these days with either bronze or silver accents. Work with google and amazon assistance and can connect to select sony abroad via. Tv's as well as supporting wi fi bluetooth. Spotify connect in google cast. The speakers do automated calibration to the room. They're in donut. The press a button for that. Either and we'll simulate three hundred sixty degree audio for stereo tracks as well. The five thousand cost five hundred pounds or five hundred ninety nine euros no. Us price yet on the three thousand two hundred eighty pounds. Three hundred fifty nine euros. This seems this. Seems like it's shaping up to be one of the trends. Is this the sort of three hundred sixty degree audio while you're listening to your black bank and it's just one speaker or potentially a couple of speakers ativan. Maybe yeah yeah already supported. Yeah there's less of kind of like What do i have to do. Five point one surround or at least get a couple of speakers and make them a stereo pair type thing. I really haven't heard this in. I don't know. I used to hang out at magnolia at best. Buy all the time. And just like geek out on stuff like this. of course. this technology wasn't around at the time. But it's really come on. Let's turn on some stuff and see the speakers. Do it works well. Then that's awesome my first reaction because i got rid of my kind of pants speakers some years ago because friend of mine needed them more than i did and i didn't have room in my apartment but i miss that i'm also an a. A permanent now that's smaller and kind of has a lot of weird angles and i find audio bounces off walls in wiz. That wouldn't if it was more of a square box broom So i'm not sure that i'm the perfect target market for this. You're the you're the one puts this through its paces and sees if it really works. Yeah if i could actually work as advertised again with some funny angles in a big old frame. Then i'm i'm really into this and i've always been. I don't have a sony. Tv currently sorry zony. But i was abroad. Bravi a person for years. Nears i think what the new bravi line is coming out with. Looks really nice. And i mean not totally in the market for a new tv. But i like the fact that i might get a new sony again paired up with a sony speaker. You got three six. Yeah already got all this stuff. It's going to be a messed anyway. You slice it. But i like. I like this to be sixty reality audio platform. What would you have set up in your house. I was straight up going to mention sonos because if if it doesn't have the connectability to be able to work with all of my other platforms that currently have invested in. Then chances are i wouldn't buy it. So i do have sono says in my house and i do have some issues connecting those with other speakers in the household to like like my google hub for example so the fact that this works with google and amazon assistant the speaker specifically The audio speakers. I think that's pretty cool. I like that. They are bringing that in and i am interested because i do live in a household. That has very high ceilings. How this would work in that kind of environment. So yeah. I'm very interested in the audio aspect. Well you might also be interested in what colour has come out. Oh yes the folks who make things like toilets and and sinks and lots of appliances however. Been a real. Cas mainstay for the last few years for some cool innovations and this year is no different. Even though we're not in vegas koehler has a new smart bathtub called the stillness bath. That lets you use an app or use your voice using google or amazon's assistance to fill up the water or perhaps set the mood by changing the color of the lights around the tab or even add some fog. You know you wanna kind of pretend like you're in the then present routines also turn on features in a certain orders if you wanna get kind of creative. that's cool. Yeah the certain amount of limitations with the base model and the base model is not cheap so temperature and depth control models alone will cost around eight thousand six hundred ninety eight dollars. That's right it's almost nine thousand dollar bathtub. If you want the experience tower that lets you activate fog and aromatherapy. That will run you just over ten thousand dollars. Both models are available in july. There are real things and if you want the version with lights and floor grades for overflow fifteen thousand nine hundred ninety eight dollars available. This october signed me off. I won't be buying those. Nope not even a little bit but we could have taken a bath at s in the new in the pre show roger was like. Why would you want fog. It's like this. Why does anyone want to be on. Yeah racist luxury suites in hotels for sure as well as apple's houses sure yeah something well. Yeah it's it's that like hey look at what my bath can do people go. Wow very fancy and then you know ten years from now will be like remember when we thought it was fancied to talk to your bathtub so that it would start filling up without touching it but Yeah it's it's somewhat silly because of the price. But i'm not really much of a bath person but they do look very nice all right. Let's check out the mail bag but ads do it. Nick wrote in with a pronunciation. Ramps own neck. You are not alone he says. Ac's rog is an initial list. Because it's our og like fbi or cia. People say ron yet. They're lower end gaming brand tough not initially them. It's an acronym like scuba or produce you f but pronounced off. It's like ace's can't make up their name minds. Then there's strict which is our subbrand strikes as a word it's a completely nonsensical made up word. But it's a word and you pronounce it as such nick as honestly as somebody. That buys a lot of hardware. Because i've rarely had a bad experience with them over the past twenty years. I am baffled by some branding decisions. The one the bugs me. The most is the strict subbrand. Sometimes acis makes the tricks products. The high end product in the product stock yet other times. It's a mid range product. Would it be too much to ask for consistency and product. Branding twenty twenty one. Yes apparently apparently we feel your pain. Nick i love the dichter's just like i just need to vent you guys. An Apple/Hyundai Car?

"Hundai has confirmed that it is in early discussions with apple on collaborating to develop a self driving car. But in case you're jumping ahead to apple may be buying hyundai or anything like that. This seems to be just a partnership right now and also hyundai says apple is talking to several carmakers about a bunch of things right now so quoting. Cnbc we understand. That apple is in discussions with a variety of global automakers including hyundai motor as the discussion is at its early stage. Nothing has been decided a representative from honda motor told. Cnbc's cherry king. The statement followed a local report from the korean economic daily. That said apple suggested the tie up and honda motor was reviewing the terms. The report said both electric vehicle production as well as battery development were included in the proposal. And that the car could potentially be released in two thousand twenty. Seven apple declined to comment on the report and quote at the exact same time in bloomberg mark. Gurman has a piece up saying yes. Apple is developing an autonomous electric vehicle. But the timeline for release. His sources say is five to seven years. Also this quote a key. Differentiator would be apple's ability to integrate. Its driving system a pricey initiative that has spurred the company to develop its own software sensor hardware chip technologies. The goal is to let a user input their destination and be driven there with little or no other engagement. According to the people familiar with the project apple doesn't manufacture its own products and it will likely take the same approach with a vehicle. It's unclear which company would assemble the car. Though in its first attempt about five years ago apple worked with engineers from magna international a major auto industry contract manufacturer apple has continued to investigate building. It's self driving car system for third party car partners rather than its own vehicle the people said and it could ultimately again abandoned. Its own car. Efforts in favor of this approach in assign it has now rebooted development of a vehicle apple in recent months shifted in executive known for his work on vehicle interiors and exteriors to its car team in twenty nine thousand nine apple hired former tesla engineering. Vice president steve macmanus but he initially worked on projects unrelated to the car. Now mcmanus leads a development. Group was several employees focused on car interiors fabrics car testing and vehicle manufacturing people with knowledge of the matter said he reports doug field a former top tesla vehicle engineer. Who runs the apple car project. Day to day apple also recently hired jonathan seve a vehicle engineer from bmw ag tesla and alphabets as a senior manager on the car projects in two thousand nineteen apple. Tapped michael schwer kuch tesla's former vice president in charge of drive systems adding to a growing list of former tesla employees working on the vehicle effort late in two thousand twenty apple also hired another former tesla vice president stuart bowers. According to a person familiar with the move. He led tesla's self driving technology team until mid two thousand nineteen and was an executive in residence at venture. Capital firm grey lag partners until july. According to his lincoln profile apples car team is filled with dozens of other x tesla hardware and self driving car. Engineers in total apple has several hundred engineers working on the project with most of them developing the self driving car system rather than the full fledged vehicle and

"gurman" Discussed on Waveform: The MKBHD Podcast

"Doesn't have to be exactly like sennheiser you said. It's a fifth of the price but it has to be over over mesh hold. Yes yes i think my main gripe with them is how heavy they are. I don't think they would be great for a long editing session. Yeah that remains to be seen. I'm going off the bat. Yeah just yes guessing that. They're they're too heavy. So here's my like. This is where i kind of have an issue here and it all comes down to the case. The case to me feels like a tale of two wide. I just don't really get these. And maybe that's like why. I'm thinking look like kind of poorly about them. I hear so. Many people say is like a status symbol. And it's like a. It's a premium brand that you buy just out of the apple logo. I generally don't agree with that. I think apple has like a bunch of really really things. They do really really. Well yes. they're more expensive. But usually i think you get the benefits of paying that extra four and a lot of that has to do with Their support Like going to an apple store is just something that i think. You're willing to pay hundreds of extra dollars for because a lot of being these. If you're trying to tell me that there's something that these are like meant for everyday life and like supposed to be for people who are just like traveling and walking around with headphones. The case is just the dumbest thing i've ever seen. It makes no sense. It doesn't fold up any any better case if you're trying to visualize now imagine like a diaper and you just put like headphone in each diaper leg. And that's it. It doesn't cover the band at all. Which is the softest least durable. I think that that material on the headband is very soft. I think that's actually going to potentially have some problems in the future but it just. It doesn't protect them at all. It doesn't make them any smaller. It holds them together. You can only put it in low power mode if it's in the case which is just like so you have to use the case. I just like it makes me feel more. Like this is a product that i could potentially call a status symbol because the way they created that case it they want you to physically hold it like a purse all the time like that feels like a fashions last like status kind of thing would be walking around with and you're walking around like i have. I'm wearing five hundred and fifty dollar phones. Someone's gonna walk red carpet with those like in their hands or hey man on the subway take this off my head because nothing is stopping now. Yeah it's like. I guess i i see both sides of that case which is when you compare it to any of the cases. We use headphones. Because here's the thing. Headphones are an everyday product. Like apple makes products everyday. They make phones. Computers speakers people use headphones. All the time When you compare this silly case to like like i said the sony mark four is where you fold them up. You put him in there. It's a hard. Shell case protective. It's compact like this isn't a bag super easily in the back. This is this. Apple's version of this case is super stupid. Pointless basically but when you compare it to the two thousand dollars sensors which also don't fold and also don't come with any sort of case You would never really consider bringing the senators anywhere. They take much more power draw you. Don't just plug him in your computer. You need an amp a preempt to go next to them but these apple ones he kinda you kinda can bring him anywhere. You can put them in a backpack if you want you can get maybe that sennheiser audio experience but you can bring the more places and you don't need a with you everywhere. Maybe maybe that's something that's gonna allow the reviews going to be super interesting of these. And i think finding target demographic for it will be interesting. I think no matter what you're going to see a lot of people wearing them every day as a status symbol. Jeez i don't think they look particularly great. Just just a heads up. If you're planning on like walking around new york city wearing these they are not sweat or water or dust resistant at all. So yeah if it rains. Put them away to release will not protect protect you. They're not meant to be everyday headphones at all. But because it's apple you're right. People are going to just hop on this and wear them every day and make status symbol. Because hey i've got apples. Five hundred dollar headphones what you got. But i don't know. This is a weird niche product. But again i think this is eventually a term play into making sort of like in that beats level of like two hundred dollar wireless noise cancelling headphones that you get someone as a gift for christmas. I think the next move in in airpods. I just don't know what they naming so so going on that we were kind of interested on like. What do you guys want us to compare it to in the review. I think it's so easy to pick like trout. Would we call them just traveling. Headphones is that the category of quiet comforts and yet the xm fours. Yeah that's microsoft surface headphones. Whatever i don't think that's exactly the more we talk about this. I don't know if that's the demographic it's looking like when a lot of people went up and compare the next yard with like their hundred forty four hertz gaming monitor which is like. Wow it's got way more hurt. And i've got the same almost the same resolution. Why would i buy apples display i. It's just not the same as the target demographic so it's gonna be tough again sent off and on twitter or any comments. If you've got suggestions also. I just want to toss in there. It doesn't come with any sort of cable. I forgot to mention that. So all of the the headphones we've been talking about like the sunnis and the bose all come with a cable so if you're a plugging into your phone or plugging into the airline jack you just you just plug straight in These don't come with any cable or than usb two lightning charging cable. If you want a lightning two three and a half millimeter cable. That'll be thirty five. Extra dollars for yeah. I wonder how long that even is. I bet it's like it's probably a meter and a half and if you want one of the cool things. We did mention about these. Headphones is the removable earcups. So nice little. Magnetic renewable earcups a lot of people in the high end headphone world do a lot of replacing of old year cups. And the fact that you can pop them off with magnets popping back on his nice sixty nine bucks for a pair of new air. Ear pod covers and for the way they are. I don't think that prices actually as ridiculous as seems I've also just really recently learned that when you're getting nicer headphones you should replace the cups pretty often. Yeah i had like my hd. Six x x.'s The ear the ear cups of just become a little rowdy over two years and are getting a little uncomfortable and then someone told me. I should be replacing. Was ron main gear. Said you're supposed to be replacing them because there's supposed to keep the drivers a certain distance away from your ear to keep the sound stage. They compress time but also they're just less comfortable. If you look at like an old everybody technical like the leather gets like harder and starts cracking more like you don't want to use a three year old pair of those compared to a new one but a lot of people will just throw them out and buy a new pair because they're like wow..

"Tech stuff i'm thinking like roadster model asked the way they started. And then once everyone's establish that as like the highest tech the best quality in some way then when you bring out lower priced version then everyone can jump on it and it's still kind of premium like model three still pretty expensive. Yeah but you've already established you're awesome tech the higher end and i think audio from apple kind of works the same way look at home. Pot started off with a three hundred fifty dollars smart speaker where really they worked for a very long time on making it sound as good as possible now. Most people don't care that much about the sound but they're establishing themselves as the tech leaders and they're establishing themselves for their quality of sound so when they finally years later make a still premium but much less expensive than homepod mini. A lot of people are more likely to jump in because they've heard good things about home pot so same thing with the headphones. Now you get these five hundred fifty dollar. Incredibly high end headphones. We've heard we've seen articles about how they've been working on these four years which is a long time for any company to work on anything in tech and again we're gonna see how good is actually sound. But basically they're focused to make these the tech leaders as good as possible and maybe in a year or two or three or who knows will have. Oh god the name Airpods pro max light or something. That's like one hundred fifty bucks wherever it goes up. I heard about the the max this is going to be. Where jumping on. Apple's over ear headphones. It's kind of weird though. Because it's like i guess. In that sense it would have to be specifically on headphones. Not because they already have an audio wireless audio solution. That's airpods whitchurch. Your buds not headphones. That went opposite way or did they just upgrade. I don't know. I think most people don't burn the more expensive or did they just upgrade it while keeping the cheaper ones around i think in my head. Maybe i do this more than others but i think of over your headphones and earbuds as like very separate products. Yeah i i agree but like in that sense the way they put those out they put the cheaper one out and then the more expensive ones. I still think there's room for it. Sounds weird but a more expensive versions of. Oh my god the airpods you lacks on like. I said we talked about studio like i. I could see a pro version year where it would make more sense to me having a higher price tag. Yeah you know about the name dojo now. It is really high. I think the name is maybe throwing us off a little thinks so but if you look at pro display. Xt are a lot of this. Same conversation happened where it was like. All right what is critically x. dr. It's a six thousand dollar monitor. Most people will never even consider buying a six thousand dollar monitor but for a small niche group. Who really appreciates what they've had to spend forty grand on for a reference monitor for six k. resolution for know single cable high quality images and accuracy. This was like a breakthrough tech and it. It took apple lot of work to work really hard to make that display possible and now that exists if they make a some other display and it's a third of the price i think a lot more people will hear good things about prototype. Lexi are jumping on that. And i think maybe these headphones at the risk of sounding like i'm defending their price is maybe just like a haunt of. Rnd has gone into this and they're spent they spent tons of time and effort to make this very difficult to make thing. I don't know how difficult these headphones are. Make sure they are. But if there's something to that then maybe eventually the plan is you know. These headphones aren't for most people. I think we see an apple product. Wow apple sheep will buy that too but like it's very not for most people product and maybe eventually we get a third of the price version that is for more people so like i can. I see i see that perfectly with the prototype. X t r and. I think. I'm just having a really hard time adding this segues into like my main. Gripe unease is. I don't know what the the niche like niches here like. What is who. Who's the target demographic for this because it's not like the purchase by ours obviously a reference monitor for people who are really like professionals doing video editing and want perfect color calibration whereas this is like it's supposed to be high sound quality but it's not going to match something like you're like high-grade sennheiser that are wired and can okay stay with me okay. Okay so i it. In video to the a two thousand. Four hundred dollar pair of senator reference headphones and to me again if you're giving benefit of the doubt to apple and sound quality which is a lot. But let's say we give it to the then board for giving them the okay so then. These headphones are a much lighter. Wireless much more convenient much more. Technically impressive and feature-packed version of the sanitizers for a fifth of the price. And so maybe maybe for the people who are buying those six seven eight nine hundred twelve hundred fifteen hundred dollar headphones audio files who just want pure amazing audio experience have been annoyed by cables and maybe something to them wanting like a like an airpods max version of that experience to like take on a plane. Then i think best case scenario for these are the fact that they have w one chip can connect to a macintosh computer for audio and video editing. Wirelessly and hope that through wireless it can give you a sound quality..

"Onstage. Unboxing the new smaller box and they'll conveniently forget to mention that. There's no charging break in the blocks. But they'll they'll be very excited about the new smaller box. I think that's okay so that they don't physically mention it doesn't have it but they show it and explain the other benefits around it. They show the new smaller box. They unbox it and they'll go. Wow look how great that was and they all go all right moving on. Okay i know one says i feel like we kind of agree here. That's i don't think they're physically going to mention the charging brick by. Yeah it. it does make sense that they would show something like that again. It's it's and. I think i had a pretty bad take on this previously with apple I was like pretty into defending them with their environmental stance. But i was wrong. I was just straight or progress is a bad take I saw a really great quote lately which was a smart person. I'm paraphrasing but a smart person has to answers to why they did something the good answer and the real answer and for apple. Getting rid of the charger. The good answer was oh the environment which is technically true but they had a answer behind the scenes which was tallaght bill. I think it's also not like totally fair to say just apple. It's every smartphone company apple. Just seems to be a little day seemed to pioneer the profit. First they should apple. Yeah honestly all these companies should be thinking apple for catching the beginning of the flack and then because do we really think samsung would have gotten rid of the headphone jack. I if no one else had done it. I might have taken a much longer. I think the headphone jack was like more of a commitment to getting rid of it. Like a charging brick doesn't seem that crazy but like a whole headphone jack. That just seemed like such a staple in a phone rid of. It seems pretty important yet more about you just did a whole video actually portless iphones about. Yeah like has selling solutions. So that's that's what apple does well. Yeah we'll talk more with mark gurman about that at the episode. But that's definitely a thought that goes through mines. Okay let's take a quick break. We'll come back. "I welcome back to another episode of the way form. Podcasts we're your hosts marquess brownlee and i'm andrew manganelli and it's finally december which means twenty twenty is about to be over one of the longest decades in a while Finally getting through it. No it felt like a maybe the fastest shortest you're ever but we are finally in the home stretch. Yeah it was a weird year. Because i mean you came in every single every day the rest of us had through four months off right and you had to wow. We moved into the studio this year. Like a lot is changed a lie down. A lot of things happen this year just like on the channel which is pretty hundred percent so in today's episode. We're going to talk about a little bit of the year. End stuff the blind smartphone camera test. Bts renna talk about galaxy s twenty. One possibly not shipping with a charger brick. Then we'll get into apple's new five hundred fifty dollar airpods max headphones and we'll talk apple silken and then at the end we actually have an interview with mark gurman where we just talk about iphone. Thirteen possibly not having a port and what that could mean for the rest of the industry. So let's just jump right in straight from the top You have any contact you liked for the last couple of weeks. I've a super quick one. I've just been playing a lot of valor lately. And they just had their first big tournament. So congrats i was rooting. For hundred thieves they won super pumped about that way. Okay it was valerie valenza game. That's very similar to like counter strike. Which i'm sure you've heard of. I've heard of it like tactical shooter. They call it basically like shooter. That's super strategy-based. Just got really into because all my friends got into it and there's a couple of players on hundred thieves that are really likes. I've been rooting for them. And they just one the first big north american tournament so sick newish game only like four or five months old okay. I'd say sounds like if they're ready to have tournaments like it's kind of getting fast owned by riot who does legal legends like. They know how to do tournaments and leagues and stuff and obviously it's a lot different because it's all virtual which they do do a lot of virtual stuff usually when they get into these big ones they do like land events. They couldn't from his reasons but they still made a really good tournament. Right knows how to get casters. They get interviews. They do everything they make it as as close to real sports as possible launching. Something physical is not easy but launching a game in two thousand twenty is also probably very very difficult so props to them on that. I wanna give a shout out to spotify wrapped. I just feel like every year. So i started Doing the spotify rap thing in twenty thousand sixteen. But i'm sure it's older than that but basically it'll just take your whole year of how many music how many minutes of music you listen to and sort of sorted out and tell you what your top songs were top artists top albums top generous and it compiles it all onto this one really sharable image. And this like sharable lincoln playlist. That people just can't help but share. It's such a good idea. It's marketing genius. It's pretty great and i. I know every year. I want to resist the urge to tweet spotify wrapped and i always shit every year. I like i look. I tweeted about this every year. I look at mine and i go. Oh i can't wait to see what this is. And then every. I realized how predictable i am. And it's basically the same stuff But it still interesting to see in see everyone else. I think i listen to the music of everyone here. This was the year. That i my. My minutes was the lowest. It's been in a long time because there was less flights less traveled through flight. So i i. I mean i'm i'm usually listened to a lot of music but i only had forty thousand minutes this year and i'm pretty sure like two years ago ahead. Seventy five seventy eight thousand minutes hutto a big drop off. But i still this. This is the first year that kanye west wasn't in my top five artists of the year in like five years. So that's that's something. That's kind of crazy i had i had seventeen. Thousand minutes listened and is that is that including podcasts. I it's just all spotify just spotify. I forget how many podcasts is that. I listen to this year despite not commuting as much as still as a ton of podcasts especially political ones around the election time so shadow to everyone who had the way foreign podcasts top five podcasts listened to for spotify wrapped are we saw those. We saw the mentions. So you guys twitter sharing your spotify wrapped a lot of people at wave form number one which is crazy so you guys there is that there are some people who had like it would show how many episodes you listen to in a day and some people are like six or seven which is so dinging. If you're spending seven hours of your day listening to us old. I'm saying i'm sorry that's probably a lot And like people listening to twenty six episodes here and stuff like that. It's cool to see. Actually so spotify did a a wrap for podcasters which i brought up here. That has some cool stuff. You can get a chance to listen. I have not seen this yet. We'll go through this together. Really quick. share I love numbers so she be. Numbers are fun. There's some cool stuff. Let me see Way form podcast grew one hundred seventy seven.

"These and other company will design that's why it's od 'em original design manufacturer and then sell the phones under the licensed brand name so all nokia and blackberries are made by other companies and sold under their names The lower and lg phones were already being made by other companies. Now the mid range ones will also be made by other companies as well still sold under the name l. g. will reduce its research and production positions and focus its on premium smartphones cutting costs on the production of these mid range phones. So really trying to shave off their losses because l. has had twenty two consecutive quarters of losses in its mobile communications business I don't know that the high end phones are going to last much longer. Honestly given that. They're they're now down to number seven in market share. I think two thousand thirteen was the last time they were in the top five. Yeah and the idea of cutting costs and letting other companies essentially make your your mid range and lower end phones the lg name on it at the end that that makes perfect sense so sane. Okay well our flagship phones. Were still gonna handle that ourselves. Best of luck. Maybe maybe they will have some luck with this but would that many consecutive quarters of losses almost two. Gosh i mean. Math is hard but twenty two consecutive quarters of losses as many years of losses It i wouldn't be surprised if lg gets out of the Design manufacturing business totally at some point and keep in mind. There's there's a couple of different. Lg's there's lg display and lg electronics They they have some some connection at the very very top end of the corporate structure but there are essentially two different business. Lg electron ix is the one that does tv's home appliances kitchen. Refrigerators laundry etc. They're doing great with their whitegoods. Like like washers and dryers and refrigerators doing great. Tv's they are obviously not doing so well with phones but phones used to be the bedrock of lg electronics. So i do feel like there's this is. This is a big deal. And and yeah they're gonna make more money licensing out the name than making these low end phones but not as much money as if they had successful phones. Yeah well speaking of successes. The m one isn't the last chip designed from apple it has been available on on certain computers to do a bit of fanfare and it seems obvious but some folks seemed also skeptical of how well that m one ship would be at powering. Bigger max so sure. Macbook air mac mini great. What about the others. The answer is there are other chips for that. Bloomberg's mark gurman and ian kings sources. "There's no way this is true right. It doesn't make any sense And you know it wasn't able to get enough confirmation time to get that story out But yeah that is something I knew about. That wasn't able to get out the door but I'm more proud of all the hundreds and thousands of things I was able to get out before others too. So yeah and that says obviously a lot about you. I mean that. That story was pretty popular recently. And I'm sure you knew how great of history that would have been but to know that you you'll pull yourself back because you're not confident enough. I think that's that says immense amounts about about your integrity and all of this and thank you. I mean it's important. You don't want anything wrong. I don't think there's ever a story too big too small. That's worth taking a risk over. I look at every story is the same you can get the most minor thing wrong or the most major thing wrong and it's basically the same thing in my mind And just having an understanding of your place in your responsibility where people believe everything that comes out of your mouth. You have to hold yourself to that standard and you. You can't deceive people and so if I'm not you know. Two hundred percent sure about something. It's not going online is there? Is there still a sign of relief? Moment when something you're like. Eighty five percent about is finally confirmed on stage or is it to the point where basically everything that's published now. We knew like we knew one hundred percent that was going to happen. You know. Obviously there's always a sigh of relief when the apple on stage and announce it But it's typically at the point where it's just like okay. We know this is going to happen. there's usually lots of stories after ours saying the same things there's other people saying the same things around the same time so you have a pretty good idea. These things are coming So there haven't there hasn't really been a time recently where I've really been worried that something wasn't going to happen. I think when you get to like an apple event day I think everyone knows you know you guys. You know myself other people on twitter. I think we have a really good idea about what's coming and actually it was exciting to see some of the things that maybe didn't come out right and so you know. What could we get next? Yeah there's also one of the things that's most interesting is how far in advance some of these stories happen like what you're talking about. Twenty twenty one for for arm based Max How far in advance is so far? Advanced that you're like concerned that it has room to shift and wiggle because we know about you know chip design taking years and you can be confident something to three years in the future but if someone came to you and said look the iphone sixteen is going to have this crazy new feature like how. How far ahead is too far ahead to trust something? Yeah I don't. I don't think anything's ever to head long. As you put that caveat or disclaimer in the story to say you know and this is obviously obvious to most people buy you put a line in there that says hey this is still really early. These things can change. It's very fluid. You could have a global pandemic in the middle of this whole thing that throws everything off right. You never know what's going to you. Never know what's going to happen. And I think people understand that I feel like if if I was running like a major like if empty hd studios was like a major company and there is some some leaks going out like MGB HD. Video is going to be about this. If I had enough power I would like sort of steer the ship based on those leaks. You know like I would see those stories and I'd be like Oh you know what I'm GonNa do. I'M GONNA lean into this year or I'm GONNA I'M GONNA get on stage and say this different thing you throw people off or I might just change my plans to make the leakers wrong Do you find that you've ever seen apple or any company sort of respond internally to leaks or you think maybe things change. Once some plans get revealed and plans changed. They get to to swerve away from that. You know in terms of Apple. I haven't seen it lately. I know that was sort of like a Steve. Jobs type of thing. Just just basically what you just said. Marquee. Semina- change this up because this thing came out right I think that was more of an back apple. Ten years ago but at this point apple is such a big trillion dollar company with hundreds of thousands of employees and billions and trillions of dollars at stake that they need to basically stick to their playbook right and they can't really change something unless it's really far in advance. I mean you look at the iphone twelve right. We're in April right now. That thing was finalized. I would say probably between October and November of last year right. So there's really not much they can do on that In terms of other companies the only thing that comes to mind this was man. This was a decade ago. I remember HP slash palm was gonNA have like this big keynote with like the touch pad pre three or pre four. Becca time. I don't remember And the whole thing like a couple of days before they put a whole statement out saying that you don't have all of it right. I think that I the only one I could remember At this point I remember when the iphone four was announced in two thousand. Ten after the Moto leaks. Steve Jobs made some quip on stage. Like you haven't seen it yet. You haven't seen how cool this thing is So I think that you know. Maybe we'll see more of those in the future. But you know I think this is business as usual and apple certainly in major companies hopefully mk HD studios one day. Understand that part of the game and you know what the worst thing could be for a company and I've had to explain this to some smaller companies that have covered in the past. Imagine if I didn't care imagine if people just didn't give a damn about your upcoming products and stuff imagine if people didn't Wanna read about that. When would you rather be in that position or would you rather be in the position where people want to know every foot you move every move you make as true as true? There's a there's a certain way to it. I also think like man is SCR. The iphone twelve was finalized the late last year. That hits me because it's like you could. Maybe if you could tweak some things in the months leading up to finalizing it like using feedback from the leaks that could be like sort of unintentional benefit. So let's say you know. Today we're getting info like. Oh we're GONNA see this new smart connector or this new form factor for the ice on the IPHONE and the Internet is in uproar. We won't buy this. We hate this. But Apple's reading all this what we finalized this and we're sending it to factories like we have to keep do they. They really have to keep going with that. There's no room for for changing these things. There's no room now. It's actually a good point though one similar situation to what you're talking about that. I remember this was a year or two ago. This was before the first facebook portal and the facebook wall was yeah was supposed to be announced like plan to be announced right in the middle of the whole Cambridge Analytical Saga Right and that was a nightmare people about to put this video chat device in and so what facebook cat to do even though this thing was already coming off the shipping lines is they had to go back before these things were being shipped to customers. They added Covers Kim recovers to the original model year or two ago In order to sort of you know. Quell those privacy concerns so this is something that has happened but facebook. Puerto volumes are less than a fraction of apples flames. I mean you talk about how many devices they pump out of those factories annual. You're talking hundreds of millions of products that takes a really long time. They they start building. These things people don't realize like this I. Iphone is going to start going into small scale production in the next few weeks. It probably in less than a month so these things are going to start getting built pretty soon so these these things are ready to go. Yeah also I always see what apple events right we. There's this this whole this huge stigma about like. Don't say anything. Bad about apple or though blacklist you or here's you know various versions of that statement But you know I've talked about apple stuff in the past you've reported on upcoming products before they're supposed to be officially talked about. Have you found that? Change a relationship with apple do. Does that ever come up or are they just inviting a nine to five or a Bloomberg reporter? What's that like with with apple? Yes so I've seen nine five Mac at the you know the apple events some of them occasionally the macrumors guys basically the world that I was in prior to Bloomberg I was never in an apple event representing nine if I MAC and no one for nine if I mac was ever invited to an apple during the time period where I was there I was I've been at most apple events since I've been at Bloomberg and what I found is that the people who work at apple are actually. They're they're cool. They're very nice. They're understanding you know. This is business as usual and in order to cover the you know the events in the best way possible. You sort of really have to be there. Obviously none of us are going to be at the June or September events likely because of Cova But otherwise I think the relationship is good. You know I also think I was just kind of goes back a little bit too. We were talking about before but companies like responding to leaks as they happen. One of the most infamous versions of that was Pixel Four. Where you know this. This phone was leaked pretty much completely like everything you could possibly now. Yeah it's you knew everything probably including the price That's usually the last thing you find out is all right. Here's how we're going to price. You knew everything about the song and Google tried to lean into that and say just you wait like you haven't had this video onstage with like clips of youtube videos from leakers and people talking about the phone But they didn't actually share anything that we haven't already seen after all that so. I'm just curious what's your reaction to that and have you seen anything as bad as pixel for On the apple side. No I mean the iphone four but the difference was they actually had some stuff up their sleeves. The whole retina display back with the IPHONE. Four Moto couldn't get the phone powered on right the retina display. I have to say when the first time I looked at it that was I guess. Maybe the IPAD three as well that was just like the most jaw dropping usage of new tech product. I've had the whole facetime. Software integration was pretty new to basically only had the design the faster processor and all that so there was a lot. That didn't come out on the IPHONE four to buy them actually having a unit in hand Since then I haven't you know nothing. I've never seen anything like the Pixel for leaks and I think the pixel three leaks or the same. There's got to be a really really interesting background story. It hasn't been done already and I hadn't seen it about all those pixel weeks. I mean obviously you see them. I think a lot of those leaks happened in Vietnam in some of the other countries rounding the supply chain too. So it'd be interesting to sort of dig into see the the the how and why I mean there are people doing. Mgb HD style reviews of the Knicks afford before the announcement as you didn't have one. Yeah man I mean it's just crazy because like you said they they finish the the design. They lock everything up. They start pumping it out and they have them ready to go far far before the actual date that they're supposed to show up in stores and on shelves. De Remember a pixel three. It almost felt like the way they were hyping. It up more is dig latched onto everyone talking about Pixel ultra and they started doing these like little fake meetings about Pixel Ultra and stuff. Almost hyping people thinking it was going to get announced then that was like a whole big deal on youtube. The new pixel this and this and if you think about maybe newer leakers or or Youtube. Is this platform that everybody can get on right now and it seems like a lot more people are trying to get into this league game that you're already a part of and has a somebody who's wants to be trusted in the leaking community later. Can you ever really recover from something like that too? We have possibly newer and younger audience with a smaller attention span. That might forget about that once. Someone gets a couple.

"One was the price three hundred fifty dollars way too much for speaker of of that size of that quality and functionality into the OS serey right so this year. They're going to fix both To answer your question I think one forty nine is a price point that people will just running by these things. Is it going to be one forty nine absolutely not? Apple's not gonNA charge one fifty for the speaker. I think it'll be between two hundred and fifty right. I think that's going to be the sweet spot for them What I would assume that it would have a couple less woofers. Probably still one tweeter on. So yeah I think it'll be a nice device for people for the for the holiday season but the bigger picture here is getting Syria. Right getting you know spotify integration in there and I think that's also part of the the set of goals for the homepod this year so they're not killing it they're they're doubling down. I remember such a big focus of the homepage with sound quality. And they feel like maybe they didn't have to lean on that but that was easily their best feature of the home pod because beyond that there wasn't really a huge reason for people to go out and get a cereal box in our house Is it possible? The focus of the smaller home pod is still get this for the great sound quality or maybe they're leaning into look at smaller. It's convenient series better There are other reasons why you might want to buy this expensive smart speaker. I think it'll be a mix of both. I think they're going to really play up. The part about spotify integration third party audio APP integration. I should say a better futures But I I just don't think Siri is there yet. I think the Alexa capabilities are so much stronger. And a lot of people use these devices because of their integration. With smart home setups right. And so you're going to see is there was that partnership announcement with Google Amazon and Apple To sort of unify the smart home language. So I think you're going to see a big push on that as well. We'll talk about that when they announced this whole pot Even though it's more of a twenty one twenty two but that is actually a really big area focus Apple has an office or new little campus in San Diego California. So you know one hundred fifty miles south of mean. La and they're doing a lot of the smart homework there and there's a lot of people engineering that smart home unified language with plans to implement that into the home So what they're going to need to do is really a up the amount of smart home devices. They're compatible with right now. They have fewer than five hundred whereas Amazon and Google have over one hundred thousand combined. So there's quite a lot of room to make up and I think having that unified language requires apple to really up the ante in terms of support. Okay well let's move right to apple tags Because when I think of all the headline and the news it'll come with a leather key chain pouch. First thing that comes to mind is sounds expensive. Sounds Pricey yeah look at tile and how inexpensive you can get like a pack of three What is what is the marketing play. What is the reason to get an apple tag versus other similar products? That already exist. I mean for me personally. The most important use case would be fine away connected to my apple. Tv remote. I have to apple. Tv's number one remote is still. Can't the other one so that But I think it's really going to be focused keys right. That's why it's going to be on sort of other keychain. You'll put on your keys. You won't be able to lose your keys. Makes the IPHONE more sticky? Let's say you have. You know an Apple Tadic in your backpack you have in your your purse. You have on your keys. You have one on your remote wherever right. It's going to be like. Wow this new moto edges so fricking cool this new Samsung so cool but it's going to be such a pain to you know to move off the tax. I already spent money on the tags. So it's like I might as well buy the IPHONE twelve right. I think that goes into their thinking with pretty much everything these days. Yeah exactly like the. The ecosystem is already strong and this this kind of feels like one of those products like air pods. Where maybe you could switch off at the iphone but if you have come to us and love tags you you miss whatever they're connected to you you drop your keys all the time. It's just another one of those Plug ins to the ecosystem where it makes it more difficult to leave It's really smart. And it's another thing that I could see Google or Samsung trying to copy one or two years later. Yeah like you saw the Pixel Buds. I saw your video on that. And you know the leather case. I mean like you said it's GonNa probably make these things pricey. I wonder if they're going to sell them in bulk. Hopefully they do three five ten packs. But I wouldn't be shocked if they sell them individually as well. I can imagine a thirty or fifty dollar or even eighty dollar price. Point caught for good for each of those things. So not only. Is it GonNa make the ecosystem much more sticky to your point? It's also GonNa make them some nice cash. Andrew One adventurer guests on the price of a dozen air tags on. If you just bought one I think going one by one is a better better way of going about it. I don't know. Eighty eighty sounds like fairly. GimMe Gimme I would hope. Like forty nine ninety nine bar case. Yeah Man. I didn't buy them. I didn't buy the wheels you know. I got the stand on Mac pro. I didn't spend seven hundred on the wheels but I could see people you know. Having you know two sets of keys having the spouses keys. Get the tags on those. Suddenly you're spending twice three times the money so it's just another plug into the ecosystem Let's take a quick break and we'll come back and we'll talk about. We'll talk about just leaks. General and the Mark Gherman origin story and Bloomberg and everything. So we'll be right back..

"Hey what's up everybody? Welcome back to another episode of the way foreign podcast where hosts Marquez Brownlee. And I'm Andrew Manganelli and this week. It's all about the behind the scenes of the tech. We're talking about the league game so we won't get super specific because they're not literally actively trying to scoop anybody here but that whole world of where tips come from whether or not they spoil the eventual events and the best and worst leaks. We've ever seen is always fun to talk about so joining us. Today is our special guest reporter from Bloomberg News noted Apple leaker and also fell. Nba Fan Mark Gherman. Welcome to the PODCAST. Yeah thanks for having me Marquees I I love your stuff. Love your videos. It's always great running into and all the events so thanks for having me on your for sure Did I miss anything because I know we always we try to give a title and a good intro for people and we always banter about l. a. Nba teams but anything else. I know we're we're also the same age. Roughly is that right. Thinks I'm twenty six same. Okay Yeah Yeah. I don't play Frisbee though but I do some pickup basketball from time to time. That's fair okay. So we'll start just by getting into the whole the leak stuff that we've seen in the news. Now we're GonNa talk about leaks and apple and big tech for this entire podcast but I just wanted to get it right off the top just because we have stuff in the news that I think a lot of people are interested in one from you. Apple aims to start selling next with their own ships starting in two thousand twenty one This one's not as like juicy of a headline is maybe the iphone. But I find this really exciting so maybe break this down for us. Yes so I don't think this is really going to apply to your setup your rig whatever you have going on for your for your video recording but this is going to be a change. They're going to be making I on the low end. So perhaps maybe the MAC mini In the earlier wave but mostly. I'm thinking there's going to be a new replacement for that. Burma that twelve inch macbook That was discontinued a few years ago. They had the air and the pro before then then they did that. One off twelve inch macbook with the new keyboard and all that technology. So I think we're gonNA see something similar to be the first computer with the arm processor and basically what an armed chip is the same thing that you have in your iphone your ipad. So it's basically replacing Intel with a processor designed by apple and the benefits there. Are you know performance power efficiency? They can tie it more closely to the other components designed in the computer they also are able to develop it much earlier on so the road. Map is in their control. They don't have to rely on Intel. And so this is a transition you're gonNA see starting as early as next year in terms of when the devices are going to start being sold and I think this is going to be a several year thing until they're able to replace the whole stack with Apple's own processors yet. There's a lot there because I said for a while like the IPAD pro super impressive chip obviously and obviously super powerful. But it's not this. This eight thirteen isn't in their computers. But every time I you know benchmark a Mac book air for example or Complain about performance in the twelve inch macbook. You always have that thought new bike your head. While shouldn't apple. Just make these chips for the machines themselves. I guess the biggest question that I think a lot of people might wonder is. Why would it take so long? What what is the behind the scenes process at apple to decide now is the time to do it or twenty one. Twenty twenty one is the time to do it Or last year was too early to do it. That's a great question so chip development apple a new processor whether that's the a fourteen the eighth thirteen. It takes three to four years right. So if these chips are gonNA start hitting the manufacturing lines and of twenty twenty sometime in twenty twenty one. This was a decision made around twenty sixteen twenty seventeen now around that time is probably when people apple started to really get fed up with Intel. Right around that time you saw the increases year over in terms of speed really decreasing. I'm sure you remember. There was a time you know back when we were much younger that you would get a new MAC book pro. Update a new. I make update maybe every six months or so right I remember. There was an act updates three months apart. Like you know ten fifteen years ago that challenged because Intel's roadmap really slowed down right and so in order to you. Know basically do it at their own speed. They have to do with themselves. And so that's something. They probably realized four or five years ago and it just takes that amount of time also they wanted to get it right From what I understand that a twelve ax to your point that the processor in the two thousand eighteen ipad pro basically the same as in the in the twenty twenty ipad pro from March. That's when they really felt like okay. We can do this in so what you're going to see is basically the version to succeed. Dato. Bax The fourteen likely the first MAC chip Nice. Okay I mean this is. This is what we say about. You know every time. There's an iphone or new IPAD. The power of apple is. They don't have to focus on talking about the specs. This is why they never tell me. How many cores are in a chip? Or how much ran is in a phone because it doesn't really apply when you have the vertical integration of the software that ship the hardware everything as lockstep as apple does in those devices Some I'm really curious to see what sort of the a fourteen might bring to something like a macbook air Whether they actually do start updating the more frequently will it be ideal for for most customers? the one question. I have is because I've seen this question. Come up is discontent ability potentially take a hit When you change out from Intel chips that everyone knows everyone's ships and everyone codes for and put in apple chips do MAC APP. Suddenly have to all get updated. Or how does that work? Think you're gonNA see two things one you're going to see sort of a transition where apple's gusts are pushing developers may be at the upcoming. Wwe WE'LL SEE to start writing. Apps for that arm code base but I also think are going to see some sort of software similar to Rosetta that we saw when they did the POWERPC to Intel transition to sort of make it easier to make current Mac APPs compatible. Maybe they run in a special emulator. And then there's also this whole I call it Marzipan because that was the original codename but they call catalyst now the ability to run IPAD APPs on basically a Mac. So I think that's GonNa to play into it as well. There's also going to be the merged APP store down the road so I think these things are all concurrent into your point about the vertical integration. Something I noticed is I have this twenty twenty ipad pro with Gigabytes of Ram the previous one twenty eighteen was four gigabytes Iran who's totally fine and never had a slowdown sluggishness right. My sixteen inch. Macbook PRO has sixteen gigs of Ram. And it's like I'm always hitting myself. I wish I would have went for the thirty. Two or sixty four and you know what it comes down to Intel. Right apples chips allow for a super slim power efficiency. Everything's optimize you don't need much. Ram Intel at. This point is really the opposite. So that's a really strong rationale for why they're doing this. Yeah it's it's a I think. A bigger than a lot of people realize and apple taking that control be fun to see the other one the second one I think the juicy exciting one From a few weeks ago and I'll just read the headline and then I'll give you my reaction to it. Which is iphone twelve will be released weeks after the typical mid September launch will have an IPAD pro like design five G. Light are Plus a smaller home pot is in the works and Apple Tags will come in a leather key chain pouch. That's a lot visit the thing I was most excited about the iphone twelve with the ipad. Pro like design. And I'll just start with that because we've seen all these like cad based renders and all these speculative drawings of what it might look like What do you think of this new design? Well first of all proud that I was able to get that story out before the first cads hit I think they hit like one or two days later so was kind of excited about that but it basically it looks like If the IPAD profiles is really weird the IPAD PRO and the iphone. Eleven pro had a kid right. It has a lot of the the aesthetics of both the edges will be much sharper. You know it's kind of like the the iphone five the five. That's what I've always wanted. Yeah that's basically what it is. It's going to be jumbo one of those right. There's going to be that six point seven inch version which I know me and you're probably gonNA spring for And that's really exciting from what I understand. It looks cool. obviously The light are will be there but my concern on the light are. I don't know if you if you feel the same way in your testing. There's really nothing to take advantage of it right on an apple APP not a third party APP And it's it's feels like the hardware yet again for apple is way ahead of the software. So at what point do they have a killer? App for lion are who knows. Maybe it'll be ended this year maybe next year after. But you know this technology that people are paying for in can't do anything with it yet. One hundred percent on that I tested of course in the IPAD PRO and apple gives their examples of a couple things that may use it. And of course I'm over here pointing the measure APP at things like trying to see if there's any notable improvement but honestly yeah this is This is something people will be paying for and probably not using much And that also brings us to five G. Which is interesting to see because you know. There's I've tested a couple of five g phones this year I guess the word would be five G. capable That don't necessarily connect twenty five network and they focus on it to varying degrees in their messaging By the time this podcast is live. My review of the Moto Edge. Plus we'll be live and phones. Verizon exclusive for life and that's that's a heavy focus for them is like this is a five G. phone you want this because it's got an edge screen and five G. Like that's big time for them. How much do you think? Apple Leans into five G. In the new iphone in two thousand twenty if it is G. capable yeah in terms of how much they lean into it I'd be shocked if they named it. The iphone five G. and made it central to marketing. They may try to underplay it a little bit just because of what you said I in terms of the market penetration. But they have no choice really to put five G. because today five Jeez not everywhere but if you look at the lifespan of these phones three to four or five year life cycles five. Us going to be everywhere. If you look at how long it takes between two iphones the launch. So the iphone after this next iphone will be you know September October twenty twenty one right at minimum in terms of flagships. You can't wait till the end of twenty twenty one to release a five defoe and you're gonNA get crushed in the market by Samsung and everyone else. Motorola like you mentioned. So they. They need to do and they're going to do it. it's interesting the whole background in terms of the negotiations with qualcomm into this They are running against the clock to get this thing out the door right. Five G. is not. It's not a difficult thing to do. Unless you struck an agreement with qualcomm to get their chips in know just about a year ago right these things have a long element cycle and so they're running against the clock out but I think they'll get it done. I think it's funny. You say that I- apples is the one company that I think could probably get away with as long as the lifecycles is. The IPHONES are And maybe probably the best cycle of any phone is like a new iphone lasting four or five years I think apple is maybe the one company that could launch a phone. That doesn't have five G in two thousand twenty and get away with it They've done this in the past. They've launched phones that also. Don't have you know bleeding. Edge TECH LIKE A HIGH REFRESH RATE. Or you know wireless charging might have come late. There's there's some things that they tend to lag gone and get it right So yeah I don't know five. Jesus curious one for me. I don't know if they necessarily would get crushed if they didn't have it. Yeah his there much about five. Geeta you can really get right though or is the thing that people getting five G. Right the carrier services that are actually giving you five G. True You WANNA get. You WanNa get millimeter. Wave COMPATIBILITY WANNA get low and mid band compatibility But also apple designs a chip. So hopefully they just maximize compatibility and I think. That's the issue to the millimeter. Wave situation that you bring up. I think that version is is going to be a little bit. You know delayed that might be exclusive to the six point seven inch phone. That's more of a higher end feature and I think it's GonNa take them a year to balance out. You know five G. compatibility across the line rate would. I think you're going to see is millimeter. Wave become part of all the IPHONES. Maybe in twenty one or twenty two. At least for this I go. It'll be limited to the high end and then there's a couple of other nuggets in there. The smaller Home Pot I. I called the homepod The dumbest smart speaker in my view. It's fantastic sounding smart speaker but it doesn't really do much it's Siri which is you know. It's a great You compare them together connecting. Tv Do you think there's a market for the smaller home pot? And if so what price would convince you that it's actually worth making it. Yeah I do I think what really doomed the home pot for. The beginning was two things..
