Ipo's you're gonna find this conversation to be absolutely fascinating so with no further ado my conversation with benchmarks bill gurley. This is masters in business with very reynolds on bloomberg radio. Extra special guests this week is bill gurley. He is a legendary venture capital investor at benchmark where he's been since nineteen ninety nine. Some of his better known investments have included grubhub next door open table zillow and of course uber. He is a member of the board of trustees of the santa fe institute and he is considered one of the most influential dealmakers in technology in twenty-six named tech crunches. Vc of the year. Bill gurley welcome to bloomberg bigger meager. Yeah this is overdue. We were supposed to get together a couple of years ago when events intervened. Let's start with your early. Career began as a design engineer at compaq. What does it design engineer do. And what sort of lessons did you take away from that experience at compaq you the job. I fell into compact Which was super super interesting for a person with a brain like mine We were a bit of a like a fire squad. They came in when there were problems so when they were bringing new computers to market they would pass them to the test group and the test group take all the latest and greatest software and back then it was like banyan vines and running three kami netted after a lot of stuff that doesn't exist anywhere today But inevitably they would break and and someone had to figure out why and the the people that are doing hardware design work didn't have enough understanding of how the software works to kinda reverse engineer the failure and so we kinda lived in between these two groups. What was what was fun about it. Is that you know. Oftentimes they were holding up shipping until we could get our job done so it was this kind of they put us in a room with a bunch of pizzas and expect us to work like eight hour days until we found the problem but it was fun because it was you know short and scope and be like one day a week before we figured it out and it felt important because everyone was kind of waiting on us And it was fun. And i it was super. I think also for me just because of the problem solving nature of the whole thing. I don't even know if a group like that exist anymore. So when you're involved in both hardware and software which talking thirty plus years ago how magical did the software look. Was it still all potential. You're dealing with both hardware and software. What what intrigued you client server was starting to happen already and and and there were different ways you know. I have no idea how they do this today. Because the clock speeds are so dramatic faster but There are different types of analysis. Tools that you could run either. Virtually in the background. Or you know and we plug. This thing called an ice which was a medusa head like thing. Top of the processor where you could measure every and and you'd watch the signals. Go by you you try and reverse the software failure. All the way down to where something was happening on the on the motherboard was causing a race conditioner this kind of thing and they're always odd things like you could make it really cold and the failure would go away and then you knew you had some type of analog rice time problem but But it was fun. I mean you really had to understand how the system worked all the way through or you. Couldn't you couldn't pull that that down. You know the the funny thing. Is you know when we were. We were already running into situations where the equipment that you would put on it. to measure would would mess with it And back then you know. I think the last thing i worked on was a forty six fifty and i can't imagine how they do it today like i just i mean i know they do it but i just can't imagine because the clock speed who we would have never imagined back then. The clock speeds would be as fast as they are today. Moore's law just keeps on compounding. So you you move to wall street as a research analyst in the nineteen ninety s what led you to cover tech stocks. Well somewhere along the way while. I was Had become an engineer and was working at compaq I started trading stocks and. I can't remember exactly how i fell into it I'm sure. I have a vivid memory of reading Peter lynch's book. And i also remember prodigy you remember prodigy who are kind of a precursor to ao l. Compuserve you could get a trading account on prodigy and so i was buying stocks and one of the ones i bought. You know if you read. Read that peter lynch book wasn't one up on wall street with yup. Yup exactly you know you said by stocks of companies. You love well. I was doing a ton of programming and borland Berlin turbo pascal. And i love the quattro spreadsheet like the way better than loaded. and we're using those tools every day and so i bought. I bought the borland stock on the idea like the day of the i. I don't think i got out of the case. Be good conversation for direct listings. I don't think. I got allocation through product. But i bought it the day of the offering So that kind of was already happening in my brain I do the ended up leaving campaign going to business school. Before i transitioned into wall street and i think when i got the business school and started really understanding you know different companies and reading about companies and and that fund that i was having Thinking about stocks and stock prices..

NFC West: Who will unseat the 49ers?

"So glad to be joined by Candace Silva of the rams wire as we go around the NFC west try to figure out who's going to unseat the forty Niners if they can be unseeded at the top of the division cam covers the the rams the rams who apparently are the hot bat right now to win the Superbowl at thirty to one what the hell's going on their camp yeah apparently they were the most popular Super Bowl bet of the last I think there's some were the bachelor come in anywhere on the rams won the Superbowl which is surprising because they've done nothing in the past okay two months to really bolster their claim as a Super Bowl contender in it's been a rough offseason for them so they got a bounce back in to see them as a Super Bowl favorite or not people will favor but to see so many people jumping on the bandwagon for them to win the Superbowl surprising I mean obviously they were just in the Super Bowl now might about a decade ago by our current time frame standards but it was two seasons ago and they still have the same quarterback they still have the same head coach where has it gone wrong we know what happened last year it in fact but if if people are buying in why would you say don't hi this is biggest issue right now I was really surprised that they essentially ignored the the office of identity try to remake it or bring in much talent really on the opposite line this offseason they refinance or what works best it brought back Austin blight who could play guard and center I'm so really they're sticking with the same group that they had last year there's a lot of competition really the only position that sat on the opposite wanted at left tackle with what danger what work right but the other four spots where they're gonna be competitions with Bobby Evans and rob Stein at right tackle Austin Blake and Bryan Alexander in the guard position is kind of just a mishmash of players who are relatively unproven at the NFL level so I would say that's the biggest issue switching Todd Gurley out for can makers they hope is going to be an upgrade at least hopefully in the in the explosiveness department because we do the regular Todd Gurley last season and he kind of seems like he's past his prime with the old me injury in right usage so they hope that with the improved often combined with these guys developing the younger guys and then a a better run game they're going to hopefully get back to their roots from the twenty seventeen twenty seventeen to twenty eighteen season that also supplying plan doesn't seem like a very good one considering that they're in a division with the forty Niners who I don't think I'm being a Homer here by saying that they have a pretty darn good defense of line like that that might not be a good match up for them yeah that's one of the best defensive line principality and you're gonna have it you're gonna have such a us a big mismatch every time that these teams square off because the defense of life for forty third San Francisco so good you got Nick Bosa all the guys on the interior Erik Armstead so there's gonna be tough match ups all across the front when these teams square off twice a year and you're not gonna want to right now in blocking these guys or Bobby Evans are often blight it's it's gonna be a tough match up for all these guys what's M. brings us to the cornerback what what went down with Jared Goff I mean I don't know what it was it all just smoke and mirrors in that Super Bowl season was he figured out I mean there there's been plenty of arguments I've seen a lot of smart people say listen as soon as Matt Patricia showed how to basically not bite on the play action it was game over for the rams they still made the Super Bowl but last year was not great is there any realistic expectation around the rams that they can make it jump now with you know maybe acres and there is the full time running back yeah I I wouldn't say your golf was just smoke and mirrors in twenty eighteen I thought he was a legitimate MVP candidates for most that season and then they kind of have that by the crazy Monday Night Football game against the chiefs and ever since then he's just more grass than not been the same player it was it was he was really terrible on play action last season which was a surprise but again that goes back to the office of line you just didn't have time to to get to a second read he didn't have time to to turn his back to the defense on these armies clashing passes so that a big impact but he's a player who I know they gave them a hundred thirty four million dollars but at this point in his career he doesn't seem like someone who's going to really master the issues of the rest of the offense it's not can overcome terrible off in one place so for him in the rams to really bounce back it's going to take an improvement on the offensive line golf getting back to how he was playing in twenty eighteen and then that running game coming alive and that seems like a lot of that on because it's it's everything coming together as a cohesive unit but I mean with the talent that they do have they still look really good receivers with concocting Robert wood acres and Henderson at running back our promising and golf if he if he lives up to his contracting really pleased the way the FHS quarterback showed the ram should bounce back nicely I like Henderson he came out of Memphis right yep yep he he really was under utilized last year yeah they were kind of well I wouldn't say stubborn sticking with elderly but he just didn't get many opportunities but when he did when he did get some chances he showed his show computer production yeah if you could once against the forty Niners last season to worry bounced off a few tackles and I mean he he's a smaller guy he runs hard and he he he also I'm interested to see how they utilize them with Cammy Kerr's

Falcons could field an offense with 11 first-round draft picks

"So we had a truck a couple of signings by the Atlanta Falcons over the weekend right to pick up tight end Hayden Hurst from the Baltimore Ravens and they also acquired look Kwan Treadwell a former number one pick for the Minnesota Vikings yeah as the Atlanta falcons roster currently stands right now on offense alone just on offense they have a Levin former first round picks all of these former first round picks quarterback Matt Ryan first round pick Todd Gurley who sign when he was released first round pick Julio Jones first round pick Calvin Ridley first round pick the Quantrill first round pick Hayden Hurst first round pick left tackle Jake Matthews first round pick left guard James carpenter first round pick center Alex Mack former first round pick Chris Lindstrom the right guard former first round pick and right tackle Caleb McGary also that he first started his first round eleven is incredible let them all eleven of them a former first round pick I mean there's no way that's ever happened before right I can't believe that what ever but here's the real question if you had to redraft everyone of these players how many would be former first rounder this okay because I think this is fair Lidstrom McGarry and carpenter I've always been really what one or two years no it's been really since two thousand eleven okay yeah so let's remind me Gerry I think you were taken off or taken them out yeah okay so all of the other nine how many would be redrafted as a first round what's what's going on it's not right absolutely no question that runs for Todd Gurley no yeah I I would say no I would sit well I would say no one quite frankly his a conversation about the value of the position in general could also affect the new with him that was the thing coming out of college yes I look he has fifty eight rushing touchdowns over his first whatever seasons and all the other ones are either in the hall of Famer going let me just say six are we saying first rounder today or go back to the beginning again it would re drawing back to the beginning again because I'm currently the way Todd Gurley came out I mean would you not still take him in the first one that's the question now right are you going to pay for that kind of production from a running back anymore we saw Christian McCaffrey Leonard for net like there's been plenty examples of even a legal or not re signing a big second contract drafting a great one of the first round can still benefit you a lot okay I'm just trying to get to it you know is that what they've done in their right career does that mean where are the first roll worthy to me the girly thing is to your point he had a knee injury coming out of college and right when they signed with the red sign that long term deal with they're trying they got out of now then he was going to be chronic so to me the top group member he was the first one that airports reset the market for running backs and it turned out no he just re establish the old line of thinking but that first three years of production would you that would you spend a first round pick on that because we saw that rand's office how much in common now it always goes like this with the running game but in combination with an offense of line that did really well what you brought into what worth over would you pay for that as the foundation of your off I'm beginning to go the Melkite around here that I'm not sure running back as well because Melvin Gordon was in that same draft and Melvin Gordon is on his team I got an extreme I think that's the biggest conversation we could take out of this is the running back position record number mellow one point eighty never take a running back in the first Rana I wonder for we're slowly but surely going back to it I mean there was a contract a couple years ago with the first running back off the board was late second round out of Tennessee and I think we're going back to that after a bevy running backs being taken so we were definitely in on Matt Ryan yes we're out on Todd Gurley a legit is amazing looking back at Todd Gurley's draft class there's not a lot of got like if you're talking about reworking the top ten Todd Gurley might be the most wealthy in that group maybe outside of Amari Cooper yeah we can we can have that discussion later because that's in it read graphic I think is always fast and you have to wait a certain amount of time Julio Jones know quite well right Calvin Ridley first round too early again I think it's too early last year what he had sixty three receptions okay just under nine hundred okay seven touchdowns I would mean he also can't account for how bad that team ask me yes or no right now I'd say yes but I still think it might be too early Hayden Hurst no not because look they they took marketers later in the draft in the third round he clearly became the tight end of Baltimore which made Hayden Hurst by the way has taken in the first row before Lamar Jackson R. Jackson for Lamar starting you know tight on that team right now marketers you said right Hayden Hurst also dealt with some injuries and stuff there too that's okay in perfect sample size and when you have a guy come on like marquetry who could predict that the way that offense ended up of what he was the Mackey award winner a what he was coming home with one truck will no no Jake Matthews yes I think so I think so I think so do not I meet yeah yeah I mean yes he's been there he's been there is a second contract I also wrote a like doesn't miss a lot of games he's he's dependable yeah I think that's what it our printer are probably not I mean he's he's been a guy that's been in the league for nine years now dependable guy but we're talking about first round right you know I mean when you're twenty four we'll talk about for sure we're talking about top ten picks like a lot yeah yeah yeah I I'd probably lean toward no on that as well yeah yeah Alex Mack yeah absolutely yeah yeah and then the other than what we remember and I think Lidstrom would be headed in that direction yeah kill the guy who's more reach last year get killed the one I have questions about obviously we know the health concerns that existed before the draft earning a hard issue that he had had to deal with early in this time oxygen so there's a lot to hash out with those two but just I mean blows off the page when you just read that number the every single hundred dinners with that crew yeah what eleven Ryan still got its still on that ride to reach for the paycheck first but everyone else has to at least go for their wallets and act like there's also a common I do with you know with my dad so you got rid you got Ridley help you got got this R. Ridley Hearst links from a Gerry all still on their rookie deals you know wrecked yeah everybody else is is all for them yeah if I'm looking at yes correct so yeah they're all fascinating eleven a former first rounders on

The Running Back's Struggle

ESPN Daily

The Running Back's Struggle

"Josh last time we had ESPN. It was to talk about fullbacks today. We're talking about running backs in our way through the backfield man just like Aaron Donald Josh firms. Meyer writes about football for five thirty eight Josh late last week. The Rams announced in a shocking move that they were releasing running back. Todd Gurley. This was a remarkable turn of events Given that girlie one offensive player of the year in twenty seven teen thoroughly. He was discussed by some people as an MVP candidate in two thousand eighteen on route to the Super Bowl led the league in rushing touchdowns that year. The ten the five untouched. To the end zone touchdown todd Gurley and on top of that. He's only twenty five years old. What happened my goodness twenty five year? Old running backs are already aging out. The first thing that happened to him was he has arthritic me. So at the end of the two thousand eighteen season he had to be replaced and spelled by Anderson Mentally played a little bit in the Super Bowl but he was just entirely ineffective. Fortunately that ineffectiveness carried over into the twenty nine thousand nine season and inbetween. He was given an extension that made him one of the highest. Pay running backs in the league. So this season couple that knee with his expense the caps situation in a loss Angeles and he just became a casualty and I think he is kind of an exemplar for everything. That's going on with running backs in the NFL. It's this idea of short and careers injury proneness and loss of effectiveness and therefore being cut or getting lower pay on the day that he was released. Espn stats and Info. Put out an number that I found fascinating in two thousand fifteen year. That Gurley was drafted. Twenty two backs were drafted. Not a single one of them. Josh is still on the team that selected them. What do you make of that goes to this idea of running backs? Having really short shelf life season for running back usually occur in one of their first two seasons at least in terms of productivity in terms of touches. You wear them down so quickly in this league. Though it's one of the toughest position on on the body and so I think the League as we've seen so far this year they still are kind of have a predilection overpay for the very good running backs are the ones that just had a good season but on by and large I think across the league. You're seeing people being really risk averse and moving on from running backs after a couple of seasons. When did you notice that that some teams not all and we'll get to some teams that have continued to pay running backs winded some teams for start to realize that they had been overvaluing the position and wanted to invest elsewhere. It's hard to trace it back specifically to a particular team but I know that People in twitter sphere and analytics the NFL analytics of talked about the replace ability of the running back position for quite a few years. The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the first on board to kind of spend money at the position but spread that money out over multiple players to kind of make the injury risks inherent in the position kind of spread across multiple sets of legs. The Baltimore Ravens are also one of the ones that the forefront of really just paying the absolute minimum that they have to at that position and actually getting pretty good production out of you mentioned that the analytics community was sort of early on this trend. What did they find? What did the data tell us about running backs really two things? Were most important about running the football. The results of run plays are primarily determined by run walking and defenders in the box. The defense and not who's carrying the ball because of that the finding is the inferences. They're running backs are interchangeable and investing a lot of resources whether it's the draft or whether it's free agency just doesn't make a lot of sense is also can be pinned on the changing nature of football itself. By and large. The data tells us that passing more passing. Early is more efficient right absolutely absolutely. I mean it's not even close in terms of the average value of a planet passing versus running on early downs. Then you still have to get into this idea. Of How much does it matter to the mentality of the team? How much does it matter to keep the defense on their toes? How much do you have to do to keep them honest? And so there's no question about how much teams should passing as a percentage of plays but is probably a case. They should be passing more than now. So are there any situations in which running the football is more advantageous absolutely? I absolutely you need to be able to run well at the goal line on Short yardage. If you have a running quarterback like Baltimore had last season definitely scrambling in design runs for quarterback are extremely efficient. Jackson will keep it on the read option expense at the thirty Lamar Jackson. Ted Pa Touch Lavar captain with the spin. This print Emma score. We saw what happened with Baltimore last year. They say hadn't run into that. Tennessee buds buzzsaw in the playoffs. They probably would have made it to the superbowl in my opinion. So there's definitely something to be said for the analytics and say stop running entirely and if you are going to do it do it with deception. Right off of play action. Get the other team guessing. About what your actual formation means and so they lose half a step in responding to what you're doing those are the kind of the things analytics pushes for not not whether or not you should be one hundred percent run or a hundred percent. You mentioned that Tennessee buzzsaw that beat the Baltimore. Ravens upset them. I think a lot of people point to that team to Derrick Henry and say see having a unique generational running back does matter. Look they upset. You Know New England in Baltimore. What would you say to that? I mean he got a twelve point. Five million franchise tag out of that performance. The back end of that year so I understand their point. They're looking at what just happened. They're looking at how he's being rewarded. No saying obviously matters but they beat another rushing team it the problem that I think the face the Ravens and we saw it with Kansas City. And how they didn't share. This same problem was that if you're built around the run whether it's by the quarterback or running it up the middle an wide zone like ravens did last season if you fall behind against a team that is also a ground and pound team in trying to control the clock and control the pace and you put yourself in a position where you have to come back. And you're not used to doing it or you don't have a quarterback quarterback that perhaps his is known for that type of play. You get what happened in in in Baltimore that night Jackson under pressure always lose ball stemming interception Jedi for the titans come up with another turnover hennessy. Titans are shocking the ravens whereas with the city chiefs they fell behind early three straight times but ended up winning the Super Bowl because they have a pass attack higher variants. You could make up ground easier with the passing game that you can with the run. When everything's working great rushing is the first thing you should try. And if you're good at it you should do it as long as you can but when it fails it fails pretty spectacularly and you need to be able to pass and in fact at the NFL level we ever parody is so prevalent that you really should just start out passing at that point because everyone's trying to run and everyone's trying to stop the run so the chiefs are sort of the analytics darling in this scenario because you know they passed their way to the Super Bowl. Josh they also have Patrick Mahomes right. So if you're a team with an average quarterback do you still think it's better to take a pass first approach in every NFL GAME? Even with a mediocre quarterback we find that they are better and teams are better and more efficient passing the ball and in sometimes. It's even more apparent when you have kind of an average or slightly above average quarterback because the defense and the defensive coordinator is almost sure you're going to not rely on them right. They're gonNA say well he's kind of crap you know. They're probably going to run out us all day long. And try and be safe with the ball so to the extent that you can put a mediocre quarterback in good positions like. Perhaps Tennessee did last year. Then you can take quarterback that had been floundering for years like Ryan Tannehill in. Turn him in to one of the best quarterbacks in the league the number one running back by the end of the season a guy that some people thought could have been the super bowl. Mvp was undrafted Damian Williams who is set to make just over a couple million dollars next year. How much does finance or the market factor in to know what we think about running backs today? I think you know if you're a casual fan. And you see everyone else. Basically on the team. Except for the punter and kicker getting more than on average than these running backs. I think it's beginning to percolate that. They're probably not the most important piece on the offense anymore. Things about analytics. Is that unlike baseball? Where like things got more boring? When analytics became involved when analytics can evolved in Football. Become more exciting. We want more passing. We want to go for it on fourth down. We want to know more so I one of the good things about all of this is that you see more aggressive more exciting football when it's played in the way that evidence seems to suggest it should

He's had Antonio Brown before. The idea that Aryans coach Tony. Brown should actually lead you to think he probably doesn't want him more than he does. Yeah, I mean listen organizations. "Banning them people are trying to get down there mark down. It gives you. It's GonNa keep ricky busy for the show. I'm like just getting rid of people trying to log into our stream. Oh I can see why because it's got the hideous job editing cropping I should say crappy in the photo there. It has very easy to type address to the stream of twenty twenty twenty to thirty people in Ireland. Trying to get into this one guy and he likes heard smirking because he could see it and I was like. I'm trying to ban people tomorrow mark. I didn't know that would be the effect there. You'RE GONNA need to update your NGO a security online training courses at NFL media. That's very I and the only one I assume that did that. Ngo Course the two days ago and it was it was pertinent. Yeah Yeah that's fair into NFL network. Tomorrow I am very curious of what is the scene is going to be like there. I feel like like anything could like Paul Tagliabue. Just being in a corner office tags. Respect the hell tags. I couldn't remember his name last week but I respect the guy I tell you that all right so this is our where we I think. We're reaching a record. We've tied in all time around the NFL podcast record. This is our fifth podcast in as many days and we are going to close out the week strong and tomorrow we are going to set an eighteen record six straight shows and we're doing it because it is the new league year and even though things aren't popping off and they really haven't been since the Tom Brady News. News continues to kind of trickle in. And we're going to keep you up to date on everything that's going on in the NFL. Give you a little bit of a analysis. Get touch mirth figure out. What's going on behind the scenes with Cecil because I still think we don't have the whole story there with his living situation. I mean why isn't Simone at that house? Now how come. She hasn't been granted status. We really haven't had that much to do in the last three or four days have we. I think this is more about where the show occurs. And there's no reason to be here all day today. Which is why I was home and she were here. Where would my nine and seven year old so I I there are? There is a logical reason why she's not here with me. At the moment is on is the residents larger than your home. No the residents reminds me of the first department. I lived in When I moved to Hollywood the first time was here for seventy five days in worked at Hamburger hamlet in Hollywood and what I rented was a eight foot by eight foot room. That didn't have a big enough space for a bed. That's essentially this. I mean I looked for a space. That probably isn't applicable to be on AIRBNB and bang the founder and not to make light of it at all. Obviously because people are dying of course not well. I'm moving on from your situation People Are Dying of course from this Corona virus. But I guess you know Shawn Payne testing positive mark. We just recently came in direct contact with the man at the scouting combine Do you have any concerns there? You touch yet. I saw you touch him. Yeah we talked about this on a on one of those combine shows where I believe the move was and I include the non heated to obviously we were in a in a bar but I you know he was a bunch of rose everywhere and I like had to create like an alleyway for him to get through and I basically put my hand on his shoulder and kind of tried to sweep out the flotsam around us so he can have a walking path. But you're right. In the process there was contact in close proximity. And if I ever were to catch the corona virus from Sean Payton. I think it's kind of like coolest way not the coolest way but it would be a notable way to catch it. I can think of some better ways but that would be. That'd be top five. I did just look it up in my phone. Because I did transcribe it as it happened in real time you said. Let's make some way for my man. And then according to my notes you clasped his shoulder and then. Peyton looked up stunned and made eye contact with me thinking that I knew him and that you knew him but nobody knew anybody and Dan that was on twelve twelve seconds before I walked up to a random girl sitting at a table and took a giant swig of wine and a glass. So if anything I paid it forward if I if if if I've caught anything so has someone else. That's fair all right. So let's get into it Sean. Payton test positive probably won't be the last. Nfl figure that we hear about that. It's popping up all the major sports But let's hope it doesn't Isn't a news item? Comes up too often. Let's get into the big news of Thursday. Which is the Los Angeles? Rams are maybe not a complete rebuild but a complete reorganization organization of what they are doing. What their operations is about and a huge domino fell this afternoon. When the rams released Todd Gurley with the post June first designation. You will remember that. He signed a four year. Sixty million dollar extension is how it was described back in July of two thousand eighteen. Not even to two years ago But later that season he was the dominant player and then his knees started aching. It was an issue through the playoffs and to the super bowl where he barely played and then last year. Despite scoring fourteen touchdowns for the rams was on a workload did not carry the ball nearly as much had career lows and touches and yards and didn't have the same explosion and the rams west a team in salary cap. Hell decide they gotta move on from girly. Even if it's GonNa be you know a bad look organizationally and it's going to cost them financially. Yeah I think we saw some improvement toward the end of the year and his agility but it wasn't enough and especially from guy where like you said they reduced his workload and still couldn't have that same explosiveness or regain that same explosiveness. He did in his all pro years. I immediately thought well. Ironically this may open up a spot for Melvin Gordon to go across town and find a starting job in free agency at a much less amount than he wanted in the first place but this is an opening now for him and I saw that Adam. Schefter reported that before girly was released. The dolphins and Falcons were two teams interested in him. I don't know why you would invest a lot in todd. Gurley at this point I guess interest is one thing why not take maybe take a shot on him the fact that the Rams who love what Todd Gurley mental the organization so much that they gave him this contract two years before they needed to. I mean he would have just been finishing his rookie contract. This year says what they felt about him and they are not cutting him because of finances. I mean they're saving a little bit of money once you get past June for design their rookie class in terms of the CAP. But they're eating tons of dead money. They're just saying Todd. Gurley can't help us win. That he is a net negative. That is like not worth having around as someone we would give the ball to like. He's not he's just not good. Yeah it's like. I think they're scouting report on him. Should be taken into account by all these people that WANNA match todd. Gurley with the Bucks and Team B or C. You're right the falcons were mentioned and they have a need but I. I wanted to get a really good close. Look Todd Gurley. Before I paid him a cent and I don't you can't do that right now. So he he. His is probably hurt by teams wanting to take a pretty thorough medical check on him. And I'm just you know the rams who also like Clay Matthews go which is not as big of a surprise but you hear the Brandin cooks is out there as trade bait and the teams with him similar situation medical wise very concerned about the concussion situation with Brandin cooks and was noted on the NFL network. Well the rams were fine because they love him so much. Well it's like. Actually he sounds kind of untradable at the moment also in so it just to me. It's Kinda crazy and we say this all the time about teams that get into a super bowl window and then two years later. They're they're on a totally different continent. But the rams of today ernest shocking place. If you looked at where they were two years ago. It's just it's it's pretty wild because they were the epicenter and talk of the NFL and they are far from it right now. And you see how it works in the League team entering last year and certainly the year before that they're super bowl season where they were so aggressive in their free agent spending and you just wonder like none of us cardiologist. But it just felt like the bill's going to come do eventually and they were going to end up being in a tough spot and that turned out to be Twenty twenty and they have a ton of work to do to kind of fix their cap and at the same time. It is a complete world of Mystery for them going forward. Here is just a brief rundown of who they've lost now in this offseason girly Dante Fowler. Michael Brokers Cory Littleton Clay Matthews Nickell. Robey Coleman Eric Weddell Wade Phillips has gone. Brandin cooks trying to offload. That's a guy is a really talented playmaker In his twenties but he cannot stay on the field anymore unfortunately because these head injuries and you imagine his market is very low as well at this point so the rams are in a very tricky spot. The window again closes so quickly and they are just the latest example of that. It's it's early yet in the offseason. But I can definitely envision a scenario where we're picking them to finish last in that division with the improvement to cardinals are making and the forty niners hawks where playoff teams last year so it would not surprise me if we end up picking them to come in last tests for Sean mcvay as he is. He's anywhere as good as we were making him out to be two years ago. They should be competitive. I mean they were nine and seventeen. They have lost a lot but they still have Goff Ramsey Woods Haven Stein worth cooper Cobb John Johnson Jared Goff. I know it's not nearly the same team but if you're a really good coaching staff and good for an office which we've given them credit for..

"Us now obviously the rams are looming out there so the Seahawks this center COS is not sold out for the for the forty Niners I do think the rams are making some sort you know in baseball is like you get hot in October you're good in the rams I think I'm not is a mother worry about okay what they're playing really good right now so you know I I called a game last week force would want all the way up in Seattle hand yeah I think that the maintainers listen I don't know if you want to pitch count talk about Todd Gurley year auto shop but they said it wasn't but it didn't make any sense of the word on the pitch count the why you didn't running late so that makes sense but now the backstretch of the season here's a mortgage council he is running the ball better and his defense since they got general Randy and clay Matthews who's been helping outside of that Reagan game that they had because recently done that to multiple sequences in the National Football League that are that place this year it may look very average operator that they've already given up quite nicely to Gary so they're they're they're marching in the right direction I think your golf he needs a running game your golf is not the quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers that can to win with his arm you need running game as a quarterback yet as that one again goes you see what they do they run that stretch place the rebel stretch place there on the stretch quite that they're on the boot also then they run the old state speech speech they take speeds we can then they had it all and then they run the boot off of it that's what they do he's at his best when they're doing that when that is exceeding four there are the others also unit golf is playing really good football I know we had two interceptions last week but the first service was not his fault her lover would have to run through that route he he stop route often your call the store that I was one of the many stopped at the D. "gurley" Discussed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd

"NFL defensive backdraft by the bills in the second around an NFL scouts built up the panthers and Seahawk Rosters here here to defend todd Gurley looks like he's got no. He got no juice to me. I think they're in trouble tomorrow. You still you so you think they won three in a row against the seahawks. I think they're okay. I think they understand. It looks like he's shot fighter. I don't know if he has enough opportunities to see if he he has it. I think here's the thing that runs wrong with the rams when the rams become a team that has driven by Thai girl not by Jared Goff. They kind of get wayward their team. That needs to run through Todd Gurley Tiger leaves their best offensive player. He's the most dynamic most explosive offensive player when he gets the ball. It changed the way the defenses defend the rest of the often as a former scout is he the same guy I would say he is the same I think what has happened is look everyone talks talks about what happened in the playoffs they talk about the New Orleans game and the fact that Cj Anderson came in and had some success but remember in the Dallas Game Todd Gurley also ran for one hundred yards like one hundred year game against the Dallas cowboys in the playoffs in the superbowl. If given more opportunities he was a guy that was getting in rhythm and being table to make plays Todd Gurley has to get the ball twenty to twenty five times a game be it runs be a combination of runs and passes. He has to have it enough to affect the game when you give it to him. Ten Times fifteen times is not enough for him to have an impact on the way the defense is play and also when you talk to people that play against the rams what teams are doing now is. They're banking on look. We can lock up the running game early a make the rams through off traditional dropback passes Jerry different passer. When you don't have the threat of the running game he changes the office changes is not as voting? It's not as explosive by the way I've got. I think the most fascinating game there's about six. I can't wait to watch Monday night. Football Cleveland goes to San Francisco Now San Francisco's off a bye and Kyle Shanahan hands very clever that could be but Cleveland's defense. I think can play with a lot of teams in league but in the first three games I did feel like Cleveland was trying and to get oh. BJ involved last week Chubb Landry Baker and it's the best Cleveland's looked in. I thought even last year now my question is Monday auto. BJ's worst receiving yards game ever to catches. Will they go back to appease. He's Oh Bj because I think it's a real thing people say I'm just exaggerating. I do think they have to make sure Oh. BJ's at least satisfied with his opportunities I mean this is the nature two position your Adam feeling come out and talk about cousins like when you play wide receiver man it is like a track meet if you don't touch just running up and down the funeral and you're not involved in so good coaches have some somebody or they have a place on their play ah sheet to remind them to make sure that they keep those guys involve. You have to get him. A hitch route a slant something that keeps them active because in the fourth quarter if you need him they feel like they reported a game plan. You can't ignore for three quarters. Did it. A fourth quarter say they make a play. It doesn't work like that but to your point about the the browns Freddie Kitchens has figured out what makes them go and what makes them go is. What made them go last year? Everyone went crazy about baker their offices. This is at their best when they run through Nick Chuck Niche up the running game sets up everything else when they're able to run the ball it allows Baker Mayfield to throw off play action action in enables them to be able to get the ball to the receivers of some of these subtle play fakes quick slants things behind linebackers creeping up to defend the run as long as Freddie Freddie Kitchens keeps the main thing the main thing which is the running game pounded control the clock and then throw complimentary passes the browns offense will be fine I was saying. NFL ratings are up at every network despite eleven backups playing this week and I think you could say it's just gambling. Maybe it it is but I think what is happening is. It's a very good movement in the NFL Baltimore went from boring FLACCO to uneven but exciting Lamar or Jackson Texans went from Boring Brock osweiler to dynamic new Shawn Watson Kansas City productive but sort of tired Alex Smith to Patrick Metric Mahomes ally to Daniel Jones we are seeing these are flawed quarterback fewer grade most or uneven but as a television consumer are there fantastic. I love watching Cuyler Murray play Daniel Jones play. I'm going to go to your scouting now too. I think works works in the NFL I think how many quarterbacks do you think get drafted early next year. You've looked at tape you've seen him. I think it's a huge quarterback. We're back here great year for quarterbacks. I think we're talking about five guys for sure that end up going in the first round how to if they come out so we have to. We have Justin Herbert Ervin. We have jake from gets a lot of attention. Georgia Jordan Love Utah State and you you have Joe Borough whose get some attention Jacob Easson who is in the mix who may maybe the most talented of them all and then you have Jalen hurts and so you have guys that are beginning to look at the quarterback position and not only realized that hey we can take what they do on Saturday and we can speak with into the Sunday game and they can have success coordinators are more creative more willing to do some of the stuff that we're seeing play in like some of the stuff that's used prominently in the college game and it's allowing the young quarterbacks to flourish the giants just look at the giants with Daniel Jones versus how they play Eli Manning you're seeing. RPO's you see a movement based stuff. We saw danger Jones run some zone re things it opens up the field is different is refreshing and because the game on Sunday looks more like the exciting games that we see on Saturdays. You have more people tune in yeah I mean it's just an Herbert Kid Oregon Oregon big strong athletics. I mean just he's GonNa work in today's. Nfl To who worries me a little he's a little Russell Wilson but more fragile is going to work in the NFL Jacob Ethan's a little flacco to me Denver will love him huge arm the kid at Utah State Plays Lsu this weekend you love him. Yeah Jordan Jordan love is the guy that is is experiencing what I call the pet mahomes bounce Pat Mahomes as a prospect and there's some guys on our side they loved him. They knew he would be this hour say you'll be hard oppressed to find. NFL Scouts that really felt that he was going to be the MVP two years into the League the common refrain when you talk about Pat Mahomes super talented why why unbelievable raw arm talent but you just didn't know who could refine it perfect storm Andy Reid great quarterback coach great whisper every quarterback that he is touched has played will Andy Reid had experience with a guy that was similar and Brett farve kind of nurtured him in hell breath follow me uh-huh is going to get this kid drafted absolutely because once we miss something that looks similar to that of a team that looks anything like that we're taking overdraft and so so I think the kid is talented. He's raw but because pet mahomes has worked in Kansas City. Someone's going to climb up and say a joy. Love just needs some coaching. We got the right coaches. We can make him be the next PAT mahomes yeah. I'm watching. It's funny bucky. I'm watching this Saturday college football. The quality of quarterback play Trevor Lawrence is a Sophomore Justin field at Ohio estate or sophomore. Those are two like those are two like last year at the two championship game. Everyone was ready to anoint. Trevor Laurence says the number one. I'm telling you right now. Justin MM fields at the end of the day would be the billable in that draft class. Justin feels has everything by the way he's a sophomore twenty years ago their Sophomore Sophomore quarterback in college. Were not that developed yes they were not no. I mean this whole thing seven on seven camps. I have a buddy whose kid was a is a developing quarterbacking backing southern California eleven years old. He had a personal coach training year whole industry the writing books on it whole industry looked train differ his up he lied eleven. I work with those guys on that. Did you get a chance to see those guys part of the reason why can go big onto and frahm and some of those other guys they all came through it so you get a chance to see them. In competition you get a chance behind the scenes and I will say there's never been a quarterback player then the plate. We're seeing right now. Yeah no I agree. I Saturday's you're seeing sophomores now. That look like Oh you could put them on a roster bucky brooks great stuff.

"I don't I don't see. I think I would like to look at too quick plays that I saw. Todd Gurley run one against my Dallas Cowboys one against New Orleans Saints. The I went thirty five yards for touchdown. Tell me he looks hurt on this. Because he looked like Todd Gurley to me when he got when he broke loose. This is against my Cowboys. Tell me do you not see the burst. Look this. Look what he did to my safety. You gave your woods that just looks like Todd Gurley to me. Which is what will you hurt like that? You can always show spurts even on that touchdown run. He scored in again. Let's look at that one. Got that one too. This is from I think six yards. Yeah. Six yards TD and he got to the goal line. I mean, I don't know that look like Todd Gurley spurt looked explosive spurts even when at towns my hurt Monday. I can go out and get a sack or two. I just couldn't play well for sixty plays. Right. You know, what he can go in and do some spectacular when it's needed. But he can't go out into stain. Your price. Thirty snaps. That's what anybody was hurt. You can do what's necessary when when needed, but it's no way he can go online about to get, you know, tablet, a few times online backup. And then go cut off again if you get putting the backfield his situation what he did. Of course, you can show a spurt and you'll get an is on he needed. We're going to see a lot of CJ. Yeah. So you're big gang back big game. Big. That's what they some guys. Just have have better games against other guys. But Tago he has a week off. I don't believe you do a whole lot this week on either big or put the game plan in. So everything what you get to Atlanta to be addressed rehearsal. You just fine tuning Geico. Get.

"It is not affected him. He can still hall ask. So when I hear the running back market has been reset, no, it hasn't. No, it has not. Todd Gurley is just an outlier like David Johnson right now wants a new contract. How in God's green earth is David Johnson gonna get close to as much money as Todd Gurley just got. He just missed the entire season last year with a broken wrist. And I think David Johnson's awesome personally, thirty five ish million. I pay him ten million dollars less than Todd Gurley and he's fantastic. I and I would clearly as people it feels like Todd Gurley. David Johnson are a little easier to deal with Levy on bell, but you're going to hear this all year whenever Levy on shows up probably before week, one Levy ounce going to break the Bank. He is going to just pull up to Wells Fargo and say, pay me my cash. No, I can't see a team in the NFL giving levian bell next year when he hits free agent free agency as a twenty seven year old with a suspension as past with shattered leg Innis past with some hold out. To this past with issues not getting along with the easiest Orgainzation to get along with in clearly not even the most important player on his offense. Non quarterback. We're saying non-core back. We're Todd Gurley. It's not even a question. He's in his own stratosphere when it comes to importance of what he brings the table in that offense like that's not even arguable. So I promise you the narrative will take on a life of itself. Levian Bell's not getting paid. Also, I see people, Twitter, the narrative nonstop is got Donald gotta, be mad, look at. They're paying all these other guys. Well, I've you it like this. If you're going to buy something that's worth a hundred million dollars and you're going to, you're also purchasing things that, let's say in this crazy amount of money, most people can't relate to this. I can't either, but if you were prioritizing by something that's worth one hundred million dollars and you were a business that would be a pretty substantial by. And then if you were buying things. Between thirty and forty million dollars. Those might be a little easier to buy, right? Might be easier to negotiate. It's easier to part with that amount of money relative thirty or forty percent of the big purchase, just easier to deal. You buy those two things. They add up to the other one thing. So when I see people like, oh my God, I can't believe they broke off Brandin cooks, which personally, I don't think that's a great contract. I would not have done that. We're paid Todd Gurley before Aaron, Donald will those deals or just easier to do obviously, earned Donald is going to get way more money. Maybe he'll get the amount of money that those guys got guaranteed combined hell he might get more. It would shock you if you got ninety million dollars guaranteed. No, but that is a very complicated deal to do. He is going to be the highest paid non quarterback in the history of the NFL. That is a complicated deal regardless of how much I love him, regardless of how town. Entity is it is just easier to go, hey, Todd, here's forty, five million dollars guaranteed. Todd probably ran his four three legs to the facility to sign contract Brandin cooks when he was handed his contract. I still haven't seen the exact guaranteed money. I think it's twenty nine injury and fifty injury guaranteed. So combined, that's, you know, fifty forty ninety five million dollars between the two of them guaranteed Brennan kooks just been traded by Bella check and Sean Payton..

"And he's just I the dinking and dunking. It's fines. I don't think the raiders will be good and I don't trust Jon Gruden as an NFL head coach in twenty eighteen the other one that I agree with you. I would just simply have higher up is Jacksonville every single team in the AFC south should be markedly better this year. The colts get your, I believe, patron Saint Andrew luck back the Texans, get an entire defense industry on Watson back and last year, the titans. I know they made the play. White, sound odd. Maybe they won't be better. But Mary ODA had an oddly ineffective year and I expect him to bounce back some. I just think it's hard to duplicate that type of dominant defense year-over-year. And they'll be reminded that their quarterback is still Blake Bortles. I'm not surprised you found a way to throw shade at my guy. Par for the course we don't have to start having that debate. Yeah. Yeah. We're at least three weeks away. So talk early gets the money and lady and bell gets the flimsy offer an I believe, one offer was record setting changes the paradigm running back pay. The other one was insulting and it wasn't just about their game. It was a message and the Rams message to the locker room was good dude will pay, and the Steelers was, hey, cleaned it up, quit colonists out. We're going to, we're going to leak. This story of the bat offer. It was, I think both teams sent a message. What did you make the girly great offer? And the lady in bell, embarrassing offer, listen, I think you're at least partially right? I think that obviously, girly having no suspension under his resume, girly being seemingly one of the better guys in the league helps and Levy on bell being one more failed drug test away from another suspension hurts. But I also think the Rams are. Organization in Pittsburgh because if they're just worried about quality of character, how good of a guy you are, I don't know. They go out and sign in consumer. I don't know that they go out and trade for a key to leave. And my guy Mark is Peter's, I think they're worried about raw talent and Todd Gurley is the most talented running back in the NFL. He led the entire league in scrimmage yards and touchdowns last year, but do you know how ten years ago there wasn't such a thing as a stretch for and now we talk in the NBA outstretch fours. We're going to need to create a new positional designation or Lou vernacular for this handful of running backs that are running back wide receiver, three down hybrids because they cannot be paid the way run into the line of scrimmage on first and second down old school. Twenty-eight carries ninety two yard running backs, work, Todd Gurley is one of these guys. Zeke is one of these guys l. bell is. I believe David Johnson is those guys certainly deserve to be paid at the very least like number two wide receivers. I mean, I had been a little confused with the way people have just simply said, oh, well, you can't pay a running back that much. You're not paying for the position you're paying for the offense accounted for and this like Levy on bell and Todd Gurley are better players than Brandin cooks, more valuable to their offenses, more bigger difference makers than Brandon cokes, but nobody thought they would sniff the type of money Brandin cooks Scott. There's only a handful of guys like this, but in the judgment was needed. Todd Gurley started to make that adjustment with his contract. If l. bell has a quality year and he hits opened free agency. He'll do the same. We'll see if David Johnson, Zeke follow suit to basketball questions. I said earlier this week, I don't buy this well people in LA. They don't like LeBron because he's Kobe's rival. I mean, I can think of an eight second, all star confrontation and nothing else. I don't remember their twenty two matchups which LeBron dominated I don't buy LeBron Kobe arrivals. I've never they're literally different generational attitudes. What do you make of that story? Okay. We'll listen obviously on the court as far as all time ranking historical performances. There is no comparison. If you wanna take regular season or playoffs any stat, advanced or regular, here's the full list of ones that Koby has on the Brun free-throw percentage. Yeah, that's the entirety. Of course. They're not historical rivals, but your feeling that there is no rivalry between them amongst the fans..

"To show it to you. Let me start with this. A message teams and businesses and messages all the time. How they treat one employed, they send a message to the employee's how they low ball. This employ, they send a message to other employees. It happens in every business I've ever worked in. Todd Gurley yesterday for the Rams news broke on our show, got a record setting deal, not just a new contract, a record setting deal. Shatters the way running backs or pay guaranteed. Money was massive. Lebian bell was low balled by the Pittsburgh Steelers leaked to the press. Isn't that interesting stuff leaks when somebody wants leaked the Steelers dead. Those moves were not just about football. I do believe girlies more valuable than Rams. Jared Goff young quarterback than lady and is to the Steelers hall of fame quarterback Ben Todd girlies had no suspension. No drugs, no holdouts, no calling out his team to the press in bells had suspensions and injuries, and drugs, and hold outs and bad press. Todd Gurley has frankly been the better employees and his bosses not only rewarded him. They gave him a little more than the position usually is worth. This is why NBC chose Jay Leno over David Letterman critics preferred, Letterman are tests comedians preferred, Letterman. Holly read or twice, but the fact of the bed is you kill highlighting. So no, the worst is either lead. Todd Gurley is more valuable to the Rams than lady on his to the Steelers for the simple fact. They have Antonio Brown, they have juju. So with that being said, I would take Todd Gurley as being more valuable than lady on. So Ginny for almost two years. I've said over here on this side of the debate desk, and I've heard him day after day after day after day. Tell me that levian bells the best running back in football. Right. Hold on. I would take lady on slightly, but the more value the more valuable to two different things. So what if you put me on what, if you bet Levy on the Rams right now would he be better than girly. 'cause you say he's a better running back and a better catcher. Got better hands. I think tiger the little quicker and for what they do Rams do offensively.
