How to Be Patient in an Impatient World by Mark Manson

"How to be patient in an impatient world part one by mark manson of mark manson don net every introductory psychology class talks about this thing called the skinner box. Sounds like something out of assam uvi. But it's actually a famous psychological methods from the golden days of research back when pregnant women still drank and torturing rats were signs was cool. A skinner box works like this. A rat or some other unsuspecting small animal is placed in this box which has a lever and a little feeding bowl. The rats sniffs around the box and not knowing what was going on on so many levels. It will eventually pushed the lever by chance. A sugary little treat is then delivered into the bowl. If you learn anything from pixar movies is that rats really love to feet. The skinner boxes no different the rats quickly figure out that pushing the lever equals getting delicious snack so they keep doing it over and over and over but then at some point of giving the rat to treat and this is off the rat. You'll hit the lever over and over and over frantically trying to get the treat it feels it desperately deserves until finally after exhausting itself it will give up and resigned itself to fate that life is the treats are everything is ally the right will then smoke cigarettes and right-back french philosophy about his terrible disappointment with its own existence. The skinner box demonstrated something fundamental and animal. Behavior is something feels good. We'll do it again and again and again and eventually grow a sense of entitlement to that pleasurable thing. We deserve to feel that pleasure. We deserve to be rewarded and when the reward is taken from us we throw a total hissy fit today. Life is full of skinner boxes. Your phone is a skinner box. Your television is a skinner box. Your wife's is a okay. I better stop there. The point is every day in the modern world. We to get little packets of pleasure delivered to us with a push of abundant and the more packets of pleasure. The more impatient we get when we don't get our desired reward. Next thing you know. Were complaining about. Dr irs taking a wrong turn and too many unwanted emails on monday morning. And what the. The pizza guy was supposed to be here. A minutes ago triggered. I think the last time was managed to shut up and be patient. I was young enough. That i pulled my pants all the way down and lifted my shirt to p parents are always wagging their finger at their children to practice patients to wait a little longer to delay gratification and focus on long-term consequences instead of short term rewards yet as adults. We celebrate impatience so busy. I don't have time for this. Everyone's doing things at the same time doing all things poorly why because he can't wait nothing can wait. We need results now. Patience is a virtue anniversary of the world is sorely lacking at the moment. Be more patient. In our daily lives can do wonders for our mental health. Our economic prosperity and can perhaps make the world seem like slightly less of a hemorrhoids riddled full versus waiting patiently. A lot people mystic patience for the ability to wait for something but this isn't quite true. Patience isn't simply being able to wait for a reward is our attitude towards waiting. For example i might be able to wait for the pizza or an hour and a half ago but i can do so in one of two ways number one patiently calmly working on this draft reading a book and just enjoying my time alone before my large jalapeno pepperoni pie with extra garlic sauce. Arise or number two impatiently piecing around my apartment calling the restaurants again and chewing on my t shirt to soothe my hunger pangs. Obviously one of these options is better than the other better for me. Better for the delivery guy better for my t shirt but the evidence suggests that were becoming worse at this. Were becoming more impatient you see. Modern society has become. Its own slightly more complicated skinner box. Instead of levers we push buttons some real many virtual others imagined and instead of those buttons delivering sugary pellets. With which to stuff are gullit's deliver endless streaming entertainment options digital proxies for social interaction. Same day shipping on yet. Another new bedroom sets oh and sugary over stimulating tasty food for repair just gullit's and has all literally at our fingertips twenty four seven in the name of convenience. The market continues to promise a world where we no longer have to. We patiently that whatever we want we should have it as quickly as possible. These services and devices than act on us as our own little virtual skinner box making us less patient and more irritable. When things don't quite go our way hashtag first world problems.

Why Do We Do Good and What is the Role of the Holy Spirit?

"An argument has developed over I. Think we. and. You can't be good on the low and you can't be good. Jesus. Either you're saying this both ways can't be exactly Jesus didn't have any effect like, Hey, you character agree one hundred percent wrong. Here. I'll give you four words just for the audience. And this this to me is how you learn. Because we both agree that Jesus. is where salvation occurs right? That's correct. So we're good and we love each other. So everybody were all family. We're all touchy feely today. However. The wording. Is We Zach Anna are on one side and you're on the other I have four words. Four words. To. As. The foundation of my argument and it comes from a letter written to the glacier and who thought. In Synopsis Form here. How will I say this who thought that? They needed salvation in Jesus plus. something. that. They could do. Now, in this case, it was circumcision, but to me, it can be anything. And that was a statement made and I'm getting to the forward. In Gullit relations to twenty. Paul said. I have been. Crucified. With Christ. And here are the forward right after an and. I. No longer. Live. So my point is. You can't do good. If you no longer live. How can that be? Because the next phrase. But Christ lives in me. So that's my whole point. You can't say you so well, how come in I John? On those who do good. Well I'm not sure it is but I'm saying. How can you do good if you no longer live. I John says there's two kinds of people those who do good and those do evil will do good. Why can't do it? So, I Realized that it's no longer I who do it? Where's that verse at? Christ lives in me. The Life I. Live in the body I live by faith and son of God. Who loved me where's that verse that says that it's it's I who no longer had the crucified Christ. Increased by I no longer live. That's a different verse. Maybe Colossians three. Let me say. Maybe. It's Romans. Romans. Romans seven says eighteen to. Yeah. This is this is another one. No seventeen seven seventeen as it is it is no longer on myself who do it, but it has since living I know that nothing good lives in me this Paul with Jesus. Yeah. Right, that is immoral sinful nature for I have the desire. To do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do but the evil I do. I do not want to do this I keep on doing. Well, this is this is post. Jesus. So, why why is he wrassling sale? He's going to ask you a question who's going to deliver me from this body of death because he just trying to you once Jesus comes in you say, can you start doing good then sure. But he had but he's in, he's in Jesus I I think that what? He's actually getting semantics well off because he's moving into Romans eight Romans eight is live by the spirit, which is where we get into this conversation last time on. John Fifteen and I think there is a this is a I had a hard time with this up until about twelve years ago because what I kept hearing was do better and be better. At tried it and I tried it and I tried to be yet I thought like Paul that fills here. I felt what a wretched. Man. Am I and every time I tried to do good evil was right there and it's Just I. Felt It. I felt like I couldn't bootstrap myself up and I and I. It's because we grew up in a faith tradition that really didn't have a good doctrine of the Holy Spirit. We didn't talk about the Holy Spirit Yeah. We really if we did it was what will retold he speaks through the written word only what about the inner conviction in my heart that the spirit is my counselor, my helper who's guiding me into all truth. So going back to the do good. I I. Think the Scripture tells us to do our behavior matters but the only way it's less about behavior it's less about works and it's more about what are you desire? What are you want? because. You're going to do what you want most and I think what the spirit is giving us those who submit to the spirit, the spirit as giving us a revelation of the beauty and the wonder of God so that over time my desires can be transformed. You talked about Phil when you are. You back in your sex drugs and rock and roll days like there was a time period. You know 'cause I interviewed you for project work on and when I heard some of the things you're into us man, there was a time period if I came up to you with a with a big fat joint or a scantily clad woman or a bottle. Of Whisky, you would have been tempted to partake in that but if I came to you now that's my point. But now you would not be tempted because the desires of your heart have been transformed over the last forty five years by the spirit because he's revealing to us reality and what it is not right and wrong it's not despair it's not saying. Your neighbors you do An elder must love good. he's got a desire to the older women to teach what is good get the young man set them an example by doing what is good but who is a? Saving you. It's not the already say you're not earning it. It's a free gift. So how do you operate? Well he purified him speak for himself a people who are he's very own and you know what they're eager to do. He. People what is his own and guess what they're eager to do on the PA do good.

What Made the Prehistoric 'Hell Ant' So Diabolical?

"Hey brains of is Christian, Sager here fire ants, carpenter ants, bull ants there. A lot of ant species that can cause a great deal of harm. The worst one alive today about two Guinness World. Records is the bulldog ant. It has killed at least three human some within fifteen minutes. But perhaps, the worst aunt ever was the hell aunt, a prehistoric insect that was recently discovered encased in a chunk of Myanmar amber dating to the late. Cretaceous period evolutionary. Biologist Phillip Barden of the Jersey Institute of Technology and his team wrote about the Hell Aunt discovery in the journal systemic entomology. The hell aunt got its name from its anatomy and behavior instead. Of having a typical mouth, the hell aunt had blades that stuck upward think like tusks plus a horn that was reinforced with metal scientists don't know for sure how the hell used. It's unusual appendages but they have some theories i. it clear that the ants tusks and horn were mainly used for catching prey. So here's one possible mo when it came to finding dinner when a tasty insect passed nearby the hell aunts jaw tusks would flip the insect up an onto its horn impaling it spearing prey does take a toll though which is probably why the Hell Lance Horn was clad with metal and if that isn't gruesome, enough researchers say this prehistoric insect. Some vampire like tendencies two when the ant snagged its prey, it's Tusk like jaws close to form a gutter, which may have been a means of funneling the insects blood right down into the ants. Gullit, the Helen scientifically known as Lingua Mir Mex- vladi was discovered in chunk of amber that was ninety, nine, million years old although it's unusual appendages were likely used to catch its food researchers say they may have occasionally been used defensively. This is not the only insect sporting metal either some present day termite species actually have zinc and manganese in their manuals. However, there are no modern ants similarly equipped.

"That and the fact that we can now illustrate that so it's incredible so i did that with this couple and i said look let's just charter what if inflation is higher than expected how that impact your plan what if inflation is about what it's been historically you're right now to lower than that and we're able to show them the impact of that over time and in their case they have a plan that can handle that the they they have the income they have enough guaranteed income they have enough money in the market that that i really think they can handle it but they just didn't know and that was causing a lot of anxiety and so to be able to sit in gullit's chart that out in actually show you in a detailed analysis what it looks like if inflation is higher than we expect and by the way on the flip side of that because interest rates are going up we can also build in that that that your income will be a little better supported with quote unquote safe money than it would have been ten years ago when interest rates have been lower so what if interest rates pick up with the plus side of that they don't water for all wrong and interest rates stay low longer than we expect the key is can we chart this out and see it because the moment you begin to see it you can get your arms around it and say how do we build a plan that's built to be flexible to handle all this that's what i did with that client and it was amazing to watch the there they're they're demeanor move from anxiety coming in saying how we hear that inflations rising interest rates arise and we're they're gonna look like two confidence walking out because we've been able to illustrate this to map out so they can see what it would actually look like and to make sure their plan has built for if you've never done that before it is an incredible thing to feel confident about your future do not live within society about what's the world going to throw at me but go i've built a plan that can handle that can pivot that can shift its dynamic in that's what we do with clients.

"The s p n gullit we got tweets yeah we do we have some to far tuesday's ashley tweets the falcons will remain in a fog missed the playoffs and finish below 500 i had them out of the playoffs this year following along the line of the super bowl hang over you and all that hasn't been true a super bowl losing teams the last two years but they're shrug on right now they are man you know what i know people were really get on these are keystone off it's a sign of unbeatens drummad beaten strub insane this though if you watch these games it's not the play calling the executions just not their detention the details not there looked phone first in ten you want to throw the football through it what when you open to tackle gets hold for holding announced first in twenty then you run the ball people say will they need wanted more and you run it and you're all pro center gets whipped and you're running back it's tough for no gain now it's second in twenty use throw the ball a team brushes three in sexual quarterback because the tight end blows the protection that's good is that often corners faulkner now it's thurdin twenty now certain 24 and you have to check it down i mean those are the kinds of things that are happening to dispute ball baltic understand but the question i would have in response to that is when teams have sensational attention to detail and execution we always credit the coaching sir so does this not if they don't have it now all of a sudden does that have anything to do with the coaching surrey it falls on them without a doubt green i'm not saying that two coaches are now totally exempt but i'm saying it's more to it than look we just one can of water down in this kind of like put someone you know this right there on on the you know this just on alleged where we can this push them off and go with your thoughts about that here and it's not like that that's not without news team quickly richer tweets at denver broncos will not win another game this year with trevor simeon at quarterback or just a few seconds after do you think he's close to.

"Will dang man that is quite the story is a bit of a rollercoaster ride there my motions urge stall all over the place it was alive when who and it was happening sure man uh so first i am curious why did you finish college and i wanna talk a little bit about that do you feel looking back now that you'd needed a degree end i'm curious what your degree was in as well yeah i think there's a couple reasons the that it went back and that i didn't drop out when i was failing in the beginning you know one of them is that i just don't like to fail it anything i have an unhealthy as my coach ruud gullit hatred of failure and and giving up and i don't like the concept of giving up on anything which has been helpful in my career for sure because there's times when things don't seem like they're and work and that's that's really the biggest reason and then the other reason is just you know societal norms ill my mom and family not why made to at you know drop out of college so namely those really the two big ones what did you end up getting your degree in economics which was the closest thing we add to business and by the end i was mostly doing seminar classes that were essentially business glasses right right do you think you could have still had the same success you do now 25 it without the degree or were i'm curious if it did add any sort of value to your life i'm curious as to what that is you know the thing is interesting about that is that i do think back on it sometimes because and when i was graduating high school like i said i was making a grand a week in cash as a 17yearold buying and selling laptops and you feel like you're on top of the world at that point and i was actually tempted to not go to school and not take the offer and just run that company is unlike yom seventeen win making a ton of cash and this is fun but.
