"Thing about it. I've been lucky to see tigers in other parts of India. But some people go to India and don't see a Tiger and they might go on 6 or 7 safaris. You almost guaranteed to see lions in gear forests you almost guaranteed to see wolves and hyena and black bucks on black parts of thousands of them in this park. And for birders, not that I've was particularly but I know I'm getting older because I'm getting more and more interested in taking photos of birds. They did like I did not know that that was a characteristic of getting older, okay. I'll have to work on that. But there was some beautiful period like this. I think we saw 6 or 7 different types of raptors. There were lots of different storks. I'm not an expert in the names of this talk, but there were different storks. We also saw rollers, which are absolutely beautiful, little colored birds. Be eaters too. Again, what's medical colors on them? So I would highly recommend it. Again, you would definitely be the only tourist going to this part and it is a very unique national park compared to what you're going to see in the more traditional parts where you look for types and lipids in the east of the country, which was absolutely magical too, but this is a very unique experience and the accommodation the food the ambiance of that lodge was just spectacular and was a great way to finish our short stay in couture. Excellent. Anything else we need to know about Gujarat before we get to some of our wrap up questions, James. The only thing I would say is, if you want a very unique experience that's nothing like the rest of India is a great place to go. But if you really it's your first time in India, I think you still should tick off the big ticket items like the Taj Mahal and Delhi going to see tigers. They are certainly magical experiences and I highly recommend it..

"Frame for sponsoring this episode of amateur traveler. The other place in that center that's worth visiting is and it's only a really quick stop and you can do that on the way to the fort is. I call that the verse mausoleum. It was built in the late 19th century as a Muslim for the vizier who ran good at that stage. And it's these beautiful and with these minarets on four minarets and with these winding storybook minarets around the side, which are spiraling stairways around the sides, which are pretty amazing. So highly recommend that too. So that would be a very full day. So that's the end of day three. Johnny gard is a really town to stay in as well. And avani just briefly mentioned the food before but the food in a couple of points I'll make about Gujarati food. If you go to India anywhere in the area, you'll see Gujarati restaurants. It's that will own for its food. It's purely vegetarian. So for anybody who loves meat, they're going to see no meat for a week. However, I am a carnivore that I will say that I could easily convert to vegetarianism in India, particularly in Gujarat, the vegetarian food is just absolutely amazing this, all fresh vegetables. There's no alcohol either, which is again quite different to the rest of India. They're very devout Hindus there and it's an alcohol free state. So that's really got to cut into their Australia tourism. I would think. Well, I'll tell you a bit more about what we did go to another state fair south, which I'll mention that it was a breath of fresh air for Jeremy and I who were traveling there with my business partner because it does allow our alcohol. So it was very nice. Two Oz's without our call for awake is tough going. But we got through it. But I will admit that one of the specialities which I just loved on a sucker for a good milkshake. But Indian milkshakes are another level again. They did this one made with pistachios. It was basically pistachios and cashews. Pistachios and cashews that they're basically ground down to make almost like a milky type milkshake and then added it to a standard milkshake, but it was they said nearly all made out of the ground nuts. I love cashews and I love pistachios. So they're having milkshake that was, and it was almost like a thick shark. It was that thick. It was an absolutely brilliant drink. And I haven't seen it anywhere else in India. So if you get a chance and you often get these great food places in dabas right side darpa's which are like middle of nowhere, you'll see these darbys and they're basically right side restaurants. Okay. Very, very cheap for the truck drivers and local travelers dot every way. So one tip though is you need to pick a place that's busy. Because there are so many, and if you are going to get Delhi Billy, you're probably going to get it from a bad daba with hygiene is poor. Conversely, the busy ones are busy for a reason. And it's very cheap food. And they have these fantastic milk checks. And to be honest, it was nice not to have to worry about drinking beer for a change instead having these milkshakes and Gujarat, especially their nuts, milkshakes were absolutely to die for. So we started for day four. We drove an hour and a half west to some death..

"Is a really nice city to visit. We didn't see a tourist and the architecture is glorious there. You get all the temples you have a lot of Muslim architecture as well. The Muslim architecture is quite a spectacular more from the 19th century, but you get so many different layers of history when you go to a town like Jonah God. But the absolute highlight was going to heal and the festival. We got a talking to the start of the festival and we realized how big it was. It was packed with people, everybody dressed in their best saris in the best outfits. There was also a lot of people not dressed at all. They have a lot of nags. They call them nuggets, which are sacred city settings. They're price. And a lot of the priests were naked intentionally. It's quite a shock walking person sing a whole lot of that good place to try to get you over to donate money. It was an interesting thing, not for the faint of heart, this festival, because not only you get all these people. It's just millions, like I said, so many people are thronging. Climbing this mountain, which is 1100 meters high. That's the highest in Gujarat. And I talked about 3300 steps. This one had 10,000 steps. Now we started that it was 33° and about halfway up 33, so that would be roughly about 90 Fahrenheit. I'm thinking. But we started get overcome with the heat. So we'd seen enough and we decided we could see all these temples on the top of the mountain that we had seen enough at this stage to not get there. It probably would have taken us another two, three hours to get to the top, and we still had to get down. But along the way, it was dancing. There was food everywhere people selling food from the side of the steps. They were throngs of priests..

"It's somewhere between how I mentioned Buddhism and Hinduism. It's got properties of both of them. And in fact, a lot of giant areas often have Hindu temples with it and certainly chaturanga does. And it's a large hill, the hills, I think it's a 500 meter climb. So it's about 700 feet clan, and it were told that we were counting by the end. 3300 steps. It was a lot of steps to climb here. It's a lot of space. It was a tough climb. But the whole time you're climbing, you're going past temples constantly to get to the summit. And at the summit, is its most famous temples. They are 900 years old. So very old. And they are holy because at enough who was the founder of jainism supposedly meditated under a tree up the summit there and hence you've got these absolutely magnificent all night temples at the top, which there was hardly anybody up there with us walking. We were able to wander through them freely, absolutely beautiful. The temples themselves, not only the temples fantastic, the few from the top of this mountain because Gujarat is quite a flat state except for a couple of these peaks, which makes these temples even more prominent, but you could get a 360° view of the surrounds and spectacular views as well. So the carvings up there will also just absolutely stunning. So that I would highly recommend for anybody who's going to live for fitness. If you haven't, but if you haven't, you can, we did see it. Because obviously for giants being one of the most important sites of sites, a lot of people just simply can't climb these numbers of stairs. You can actually get carried up there like a king. Carry you like the Egyptian pharaohs. And we asked how much it would cost, not that we were going to do it. But I think it was only like 20 American dollars to be taken up and down. Pretty tough with these four men. You could see even with a lot of people, that was hard work. And one person actually tipped out going down the stairs. So I don't know how safe it is. I didn't get hurt. It's definitely worth even going to the bottom and the temple and looking up at the temples, which are a long way up, 1700 feet above in terms of elevation, the mountain itself, I think is about two and a half thousand feet. So you basically it's a scent that you have to do. But once you get the top, it's well worth it. The next day we drive further south to what I think was one of the most stunning places I've seen in my life. And that's sassan gear national park. And it's about a 5 hour drive, so it takes most of the day and the driving is interesting and I didn't mention driving. Do not drive. Do not drive in India, and I think you've been big. I hope you'd agree with me Chris is there is never a moment that I was tempted to. Well, I shouldn't actually say that that's the case. Way, way back in the archives, an amateur traveler, you can find an episode we did on the enduro, India. Oh, that's wrong. Which was a long distance motorcycle rally, not a race on old World War II motorcycles through rural India. That's probably the only time that I thought that it was an all tempted to drive in India when it was when we did that episode..

"I got my bags back on the road I'm heading out there and I'm ready to go looking real good in my passport photo oh no. Amateur traveler episode 781 today the amateur traveler talks about temples and festivals, fishing boats and palaces, striped hyenas, and the asiatic lion. As we go to Gujarat, India. Welcome to the amateur traveler. I'm your host Chris Christensen. Let's talk about Gujarat. I'd like to welcome back to the show James Schoenberg, who has come back to the show to talk about Gujarat, India, James. Welcome back to the show. Thanks Chris. This is very different to the last two times I've come to speak. I said, welcome back. I think you were on 5 minutes ago, as I recall. It feels like that. I almost never do this. Bring somebody back right away, but James did such a great job and pitched me such interesting places that, you know, that's what happens. That's the danger of making a good pitch. Oh, thank you. And Gujarat was not a place that I could even have put on a map in India. Where are we talking about? So it's in the far western central to northern western border bordering Pakistan. So Pakistan's its western border. And the southern borders of the Arabian sea, and the states that people probably don't know a lot better than it is to Rajasthan and where a lot of people go for the first time as Indian visitors. And also Maharashtra, which is where Mumbai is the capital. So it's actually close to some of the big heating states in terms of tourism. But it's very different geographically. It's very different feel to the rest of India. I've been to India 9 times to travel and teach and it's got a very different feel to the other states. And it's quite unique, which quite attractive for somebody..

To comb through the soil, very dangerous work, sometimes in violent conditions to find, uh, these pieces of carbon, which are brought up to the earth's surface through These volcanic tubes of what's called the kimberlite. And so you find them in the river bottoms and some of the most primitive mining imaginable and, uh, some of these diamonds In emerging from such miserable conditions still find their way to The U. S market. I went to Angola, another nation in Africa, of course, which has been wracked with Had been racked by civil war largely funded through the smuggling and the sales of diamonds. Uh, I went to India, which is the Headquarters. The state of the Indian state of Gujarat polishes the majority of diamonds in the world and I saw the conditions and some of these factories where child labor is used to Get the diamonds into the glittery shape that Westerners have expected. Uh, I went to Russia to see the birthplace and still the headquarters of the synthetic diamond industry. A way that machines have been built to recreate the heat and the pressure and the Earth's mantle that create the diamonds in the first place. And then I took a long look at the marketing history of the time and The way that these shiny pebbles have been sold. To Western consumers through the genius and I say that word Uh, with a certain amount of respect but also advisedly, the genius of The corporation called DeBeers Consolidated Minds, which acquired of the market. In South Africa, Uh, in the 18 nineties, thanks to the The scheming of an Oxford graduate named Cecil Rhodes, for whom the Rhodes scholars are named. Cecil Rhodes founded the Bears Corporation, and he hit upon the inside that the way that you create high prices for these For these little minerals is that you just simply create artificial scarcity in the market, which is what he did and what the beers continues to try and accomplish, even though it no longer dominates the market, as it did today. So I was not only a hive of artificial scarcity. It was also a marketing factory. Uh, it was the Bears Corporation that created this idea out of whole cloth and invented custom. That young man is supposed to spend two months of his salary on his sweetheart's engagement ring. That turns out that sounds like something from Charles Dickens. But It's actually a complete marketing fable. And it was also out of the DeBeers Idea factory with the help of a New York ad agency called J. Walter Thompson. The idea of the eternity of a diamond poetry. Surrounding this drink it, um I look back at some of the ads that were created in the in the Great Depression to convince American men that this is what they needed to do just to spend money, even in the midst of a depression. And the ads all centered around the idea. Of temporal, itty and of mortality and the idea that this diamond is going to survive you. It's almost rather morbid. But this was a successful advertising.

When India's Cash Disappeared

"This is planet money from NPR. Hey just a quick note today. Show is about India's massive experiment to get rid of cash. It originally aired in two thousand seventeen eighteen. we've got an update for you at the end so stay tuned on November eighth at ten PM. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi got on TV and out out of nowhere said all of the money in your wallet is totally worthless. Starting now be have decided that the prior one hundred Rupee and tower that booby currency norps presently in use bill no longer be the legal and pro midnight tonight five hundred and thousand rupee notes about eighty five percent of the cash in India the five hundred and thousand nodes hoarded by emptying this intitial eliminates will become just `less piece of paper worthless pieces of paper. Imagine that imagine in president trump gets on TV and says all of the ten twenty fifty one hundred dollar bills in your wallet do not worth anything anymore an India's not like the US where most people have credit cards and debit debit cards ninety percent of business transactions in India happen in cash and a lot of that cash is to use Modi's term black money like doc money's basically any money that is outside of the tax system. It's become kind of a catch all phrase for corruption in India. MODY said you have one month to take your cash to the bank and exchange it for these new bills that we have just minted and you can change at a maximum about sixty dollars a day sixty dollars as a lot of money for most Indians. Most Indians live on less than two dollars a day but it's not that much money for wealthy. Indians and this limit said mody meant that criminals and big time tax evaders would be stuck with these big stacks of cash country Bill Gates success. Thank you very much. Thanks a lot shot. After after Moody's speech India's entire economy ground to a halt people are still lining up for days to exchange old money buys provoked a frenzy as hundreds hundreds of millions of Indians. Don't have bank accounts died of shock. Others committed suicide. Million people waited for eight hours in the blazing being son to change their money at the banks. Small businesses went bankrupt because nobody had any money to buy anything. A baby died because his parents didn't have cash for taxi to the hospital. The bills out and his hands were shaking. He told me this money. It represents a far more. I can't afford to lose it. Don't go out to you ever done this. Saudi Aramco inks deal with India's Reliance Industries

"Saudi arabia is making a high stakes investment in india's. The world's largest crude oil exporter seeks is to deepen its ties with the fastest growing energy consumer. The saudi state energy giant plans to take a twenty percent stake in reliance industries refining and petrochemicals business valuing the businesses seventy five billion dollars he was to discuss the deal is angry rebel. They're not senior energy correspondent down the line rejoined oil mumbai correspondent benjamin parkyn so then what are the terms of the deal and how favorable are they reliance well aramco is going to take a twenty cent stake in realizes oil and in petrochemicals business which valued at seventy five billion dollars including debt so that means we'll get about fifteen billion dollars which is a huge sum and one of the largest foreign investments ever in india in addition reliance will obviously get access to saudi arabia's enormous oil reserves cbs. You'll get access to aramco's technology which will help to make it's refunding operation most sophisticated and so on and it will get access to around close was management expertise and aramco will appoint some managerial positions within the new unit there for me however the deal isn't finalized finalized yet and they're all details to resolve realizes channel mckay shabani initially announced it in a very confident fashion at their annual general meeting meeting but aramco went onto a little bit of cold water on that by saying that it was still a relatively early stage however ryan so confident that it's just a matter of time crime until they concluded and what's the appeal of the indian market for saudi aramco around the foreign oil and gas majors increase investments in the country to well b._p. And reliance lines recently entered into a deal to form a network of petrol stations and aviation fuels business so clearly oil and gas majors are interested in india and for a good reason because it's the foss granted you consumer in the world and it is among the fastest growing larger economies you know there are literally tens of millions of people people and even hundreds of millions of people in some cases entering these new markets as consumers for the first time so whether it's driving causal the most cycles flying in planes buying and switching on t._v.'s getting connected to the electric grid and no other country in the world bar i guess us china can claim anything like that so with dimond lagging in other parts of the world india is very very important for aramco and other big oil and gas companies reliance particularly important for aramco well reliance <unk> has one of the world's largest and most fisted refining operations they state of the art complex in gujarat on india's west coast i but crucially reliance also has a strong presence throughout india and across regions and sectors that few others can claim seem to have a presence so it has an incredible research among indian consumers and in addition to its oil and chemical business this it has to very fast growing revenue businesses in retail reliance retail and in digital services called gio and now it's not obvious obvious how these could help a company like aramco or b._p. But there are lots of opportunities and reliance executives have talked about that so gio has three hundred forty million mobile customers which is equivalent or larger than the population of the u._s. So it's a huge is base of people and gio creates kind of loyalty scheme whereby its customers have an incentive to refuel at a specific petrol station and network or whatever it is or realize of land on which aramco could build if they need to which would massively speed up. What's otherwise is a time consuming and painful bureaucratic process. What will relies use the investment ford. One crucial thing is to pay down its debt so so realizes come under an increasing amount of scrutiny for its growing debt pile precisely because it spent a huge amount of money in order to build up this digital gio business us almost from scratch in some senses ties and that debt of around twenty billion out of the end of the most recent financial year which is much larger than what i had a few years years ago so this has concerned some investors and holidays to downgraded the radio net stock so alongside side the aramco deal reliance announced that does zero company by twenty twenty one and the roughly fifty billion dollars is going to get is gonna make a huge difference to that needless to say but reliance is adamant that the deal is not about paying down debt. It's a strategic partnership and it's part of a broader vision that involves loves bringing on mopeds no just in the oil business but across the company in order to sort of shake up the way its run and its management structure and how will it's digital and retail business with its oil and chemicals operation the retail and digital businesses current account for around thirty percent of eba but reliance wants to increase that share to around half now. This is all part of a quite an ambitious strategy to go from being a business that refined oil and makes wchs petrochemicals to a consumer facing giant that will provide you with everything from mobile phones to your t._v. Service to clothes to to food on multiple now notice to do this. The company plans to restructuring quite a significant so wants to separate the oil and chemical unit then twitch around investing into a separate entity within five years and may listed it also wants to list raced gio and reliance retail over similar timeframe so in five years time reliance will look very different and you know something more akin to a holding company will do succeed in winning regulatory approval rawlins's confident that it will it will be closed by march next year yea twenty twenty but as i said the terms still have to be finalized with aramco who relevant more hesitant in their own statements turning to you how does this deal fitting with aramco's overall strategy so saudi aramco has made huge efforts over the last few years to expand abroad and this is mainly through asia and false growing emerging economies and it struck huge number refinery partnerships across asia from korea korea announced india. The plan is always to lock in future sales of crude. It's a measure of security for the world's biggest oil exporter exporter to be able to do this. The point is also that it wants to secure these markets where demand is still growing quite quickly. Particularly as consumption elsewhere begins to weaken and over time beginning c mo remove this particularly with big global push towards cleaner gina fuels and so this is part of their overall strategy tools diversification so diversification but in a slightly different sense the kingdom and muhammad had bin salman the crown prince of saudi arabia has actually talked about moving the country's economy beyond oil but if it wants to do that it needs to have a steady stream of cash coming from its existing oil and gas businesses in order to fund all the new stuff and create saudi arabia two point. Oh so whether it be in technology or tourism mining all these other sectors that saudi arabia wishes it could it will be an expert in at some point but it has to leverage its know-how in order to do that. You mentioned the saudi arabia's efforts to diversify away from fossil fuels away from dirty sources. She's a fantasy. Where is it that with particular process so the kingdom's diverse vacation of its economy is largely to do with securing its future future government revenues and it's extremely early stages. They've tried to invest in a huge number of technology companies abroad these very fast growing foreign companies in some ways but actually not generating the kinds of revenues traditional oil and gas businesses can deliver so it's very tricky will also happened as they've been trying to embark walk upon this big plan led by the very powerful and quite impatient crown prince is that they have had a series of political crises from the killing of journalist jamaica shoji and what the has done is created this sort of wave international censure and stops the country okay from getting these funds from abroad that really needed to help diversify the country's economy but this is another reason why they've turned to india india has been <hes> with open arms and is really willing to legitimize and give saudi arabia that ranking as a global investment went powerhouse with a deal like this and also because india's economy still heavily reliant on polluting fossil fuels so we'll aramco's technical no hair that they've they seem offered as part of this deal helping to cut back on the pollutants the so damaging to the health of the population why would say at this stage. The answer is probably no do india has got one of the most aggressive renewables programs out there but the demand is growing so quickly that they need more of everything everything whether it be oil gas coal even as well as newer forms of energy clean like solar so india is probably googly looking to saudi arabia to ensure that indian energy security is firmly in place and this remember comes a time when oil all supplies from countries such as iran or venezuela have really been disrupted. It's obviously a private company reliance but there is a broader context in which this deal is happening. You mentioned the the fall of supply from venezuela and iran in terms of the amount of oil. Were talking about as part of this steal. Will this offset the loss of those imports for india from around because of the u._s. sanctions. So what we've already seen is that some countries such as saudi arabia and iraq have tried to replace runyon barrels not just in india but other countries too and the thinking here is for reliance that they will end end up securing forty percent of the amount of oil that they need from saudi aramco itself but they're still will be other suppliers out there and eventually how how confident the saudi aramco the still will go through saudi aramco has said that india's massive strategic priority for the company and the country but the chief financial of did say on the company's first ever earnings call that the deal was still at a very early stage due do you diligence was still required over the next four months or say and board approval was still require it so they really were trying to as bensaid waterdown how far hour-long the steel had gone to but would save very senior. Officials in saudi arabia and also in india definitely would have had to sign off on this to even get to this point.
