Yeah that's kind of airplane on the cover hasn't had another one. Yeah thin of a cadillac. When i'm not sure it was an airplane. There's another one have listened to about fifteen years or longer. I should go back to have very fond memories but no yeah all those players that kind of emerged from compass guenter. Who's like i think. Joel salvin in is piece. Mentions that his first tour in cuba was in nineteen thirty eight and then in nineteen ninety six ninety seven. He's he's reporting a nine hundred ninety still goes on. It's like wow you know this kind of time travel mice and they got him just in time because fairly bracket the off the movies made they started off form by one a sort of the lives. That will stop playing music professionally. Aren't they in fact completely retarded little too. I think some of them didn't even have the insurance that they were famed for playing on so incredibly kind of i mean the other things that they recorded peacefully subsea a old havana. Cj which probably now and say what five vintage gear that you have but but it. It is fabulous sounding gazillion but they had buckets flow because there were holes in the roofs. I mean it was like it was not really working working studios kind of slightly in most polls mazing sound. I sounds fabulous. And i think the other thing about it is that it has actually managed to be quite influential into kind of contemporary music has been sampled quite a bit and that sound has kind of i think a lot of people. My generation would recognize one of his social club and it kind of bridges a gap away and let people. Because it's been so recorded you can sample it really nicely and it could've crops up everywhere and it's it's of this sort of guiding thread of sound that still still persists for me anyway. That's interesting didn't know any of the. I mean it's sort of. It's not just pre seltzer. it's almost pre. Remember it's It's it's very low thirty stately you very little bits fast. For example it's the it's it's quite Tempos stuff to dance to though still you can still you know. It's is fantastic. Know just grooves really are you need. It is historical context. Basically one you're listening to is what evolved into mambo. Mambo was exposed to new york in in the forties and fifties which ultimately evolved salsa. So it's it's it is part of that.

"Am to us. He's if one caliber talents informed. Toto wolff is said alex l. one should not be racing williams which is powered by the cds if he's a red bull backdrop cut ties with red bull. Williams hasn't said anything. As far as i've heard christian says it'd be weird because turner who've doesn't run the williams team not even a shareholder anymore. I'm pretty sure and as this right. It almost feels like both of these drivers now. I've been put up into the drive. A it specifically to your type the other team which is very strong. There's nothing like pity. Wargames between terry therese bar people like throw in to people as the whipping literally using they use literally using people as the weapon. Isaac alex alabama nick defray the torpedo tubes and firing. Finish on just. Who would have thought that would be the bargaining chips in in this ongoing sort of dispute between him and wilson horner so I know about you walk mall comfortable at rights. It's almost like the mafia in terms of they haven't pale. did i have over the greed. Let's be honest. I have sorry mini-debate they power and supply. Many teams will really have who is pulling the strings in this sport because the pairing the majority of the Mercedes court frankly. I don't know if that's territory which they should be in in dictating. Who goes where. I mean business on either. Those are the deals. Live life sondra with but if williams guy well thank you the offer addictive very start but we actually we want alexander on so yeah well well it's funny because The civial manufacturer ties has happened before. We saw esteban civil. He's mercedes ties effectively to go to rhino on the permanent basis. He was online at one point in a former renner life but certainly that toys go nasa. It's not sort an unreasonable request. Probably to be honest for for alexander it probably could do with big free of the shackles of duck. The helmet bakari needs halley. Choices stay safe austria. Twenty twenty mask to be honest. So i don't know how that plays out. But if for alex to become a sort of a free agent i guess and end up at at williamson the then so be it. But i don't know if i'm comfortable about tighter and christian sort of dictating who who gets who gets to be employed same no on williams what i think which is even stranger dollars. So these mixed courses antonio nutsy. He's the incumbent at alfa romeo He qualified very well this weekend. Couldn't score point 'cause you've got a puncture after he's fist up that gotta kill these race. But he's not off the cards either so there's still plenty of room to maneuver here and obviously we only two states left in the battle of not being about who gets there first which tame it seems like dominates compensation. Well this could go on for a little while and finally i do want to mention this on because this is an interesting kind of unfolding unlikely rivalry. I guess inside us between mixture mecca and nikita mazowe. Now there have been flashpoints this season already between these two guys i think back of course to the high profile one in back when masbate almost a million i hate to think of what kind of accent might have caused with a pretty light defensive swerve down that super long straight on the last lap as well we'll battling twelfth whatever was we'll probably lower that actually They had several flashpoints. A masterpiece was unhappy. That chewbacca pasta during their preparation. Lap in q on even though schumacher have been given permission by the team to do so. That didn't seem to factor into pins thinking after that was explained to him at the intel in the competent did tell him afterwards and then on tracking you can go and find these videos online various places. They had a bit of a battle she trying to get past deeds against some very lights whereas almost put him in the wall against the people i knew or shoved him into the people at one point by moving very light and macaroni picked up some wing damage from that tussle. They clearly this cutting our love lost between these guys and you've got to kind of feel guenter stein a here because on the one hand you got mixed you and who look. Maybe something's going on behind the scenes. We are no but for as far as we can tell seems to be kind of doing what he's doing job. Kadima's is clearly putting his elbows app. Because he's trying to make point and he's also the side of the guys keeping the tame alive. What do i mean. It's unfortunate. yeah it is because he wants to clunk heads together. Tell them snap out of into behaved. We've got who the back of the defect owners of the text shadow owners. tame then You got makes you know the part of that engine sort of deal with ferrari probably He's gonna be he's gonna trade on cable territory because he's going to be you know. Tell them to get in life but just as quickly if you piss off enough in public Nice that is an interesting one and to be honest to be honest. I think gunston acer stay and read them the riot act in. Tim's of guys this is. This is a team. The you're representing. You're representing all the mechanics. Sir putting all the hard yards and you bloody squabbling truck look couple of imbeciles at it. Does that kind of battle doesn't doesn't do anyone. Any five is in terms of their reputation. Of course masbate has the measure sweden reputation. And what have you done is probably much lined then keenum as a pin or first for all sorts of reasons and they make sure mockeries the golden boy golden boy she mecca. He's the he's literally. Bambi is doing i wrong. You can do wrong cy. He yeah but yeah so doesn't need to get into that kind of squabbling battle massive in just needs to sort of hunker down and just let the results do the talking. Yeah it's it's a. "You haven't done anything sense. Aaron yes you want an mvp but like you haven't done anything sense the teams that have been like you haven't been to a super bowl sense. You one one. The only time. Tom brady only year. Tom brady in the nfc. He took his into super bowl and won. So you see for one year and yes. It'd be nice to have all your friends back like. Hey you had random. Randall cobb back. The packers don't if you don't know the packers traded for randall. Cobb to come back to the green bay packers from the houston texans. So he's back. So aaron is basically saying. I'll like how all these guys were. let go. i felt. We should've kept them in place in green bay. If you find a company that you are taking over of has a problem. That is something in the way that the next step you had to clean house. You have to get rid of the problem. Get rid of the cancer right. Not trying to say that. These guys were kansas on the team. But look what's happened since these guys have been. Let go the past two seasons. This team has made to the nfc championship game. One at san francisco and the other one at their home turf so whatever they did to clean house. It's working so far. I'm just saying i guess. Aaron rodgers playing quarterback and having an mvp type season latte mvp seasons type mvp season. Last season helps but they cleaned house. Got rid of those some of those guys and realized. Hey we're actually. We can be a lot better as long as we continue to build and other areas now. That's not saying anything from coach. Coach pat leflore. That's not saying anything from Guenter gut's or whatever you pronounce this guy's name. I don't know like that's not saying that. They're doing bad their job. Because i don't think they're doing bad then. They realize that you've got clean house now. The way they did it is probably also what's sitting wrong with erin like when when new regime was taken over the indianapolis colts when andrew luck was drafted. Right they let go not only if peyton manning they let go of veterans dallas. Clark gary bracket. I'm jeff saturday. They let go players. That were longtime veterans on this team. They moved on from. They said woods. We're moving on. We're starting fresh. We have a brand new chord coming in and we are going to build around him with a young talent so this happens and what happened. They made it to the playoffs. The first three years made to the wildcard game then the divisional round and then the the afc championship game. So they had to just to start fresh. Remind you when manning went down. They went one in fifteen. They were garbage. So go back to rodgers now. I this is why we find out why he really was gone. He didn't like how has how everyone was. Let go how he didn't have any say and they now is just coming to. He said i want more. Say what's going to affect my job and this you know as someone who is you know in his case like technically a manager. It's quarterback you kinda managed a team. You're gay manager right. You wanna make sure that you had the right pieces around you to be successful. And maybe that's why. Aaron felt like that he wasn't able to be successful for the green bay packers. But he's back. I think there's going to be a one year like a one year thing. like hammond. devante azure gonna like try to have a great season together and try and make it to the super bowl. This time i just don't i don't think it will. I don't think remains that team that's going to like. I don't see. I'll look at green. Like oh wow. They really improve this offseason. There's just there. I look at a teams. I know they improved better than green bay. That will dictates episode of one and done radio. Thanks for tuning into the show. Be sure to

That Mouse in Your House: It's Smarter, Thanks to You
"You've ever hosted a mouse as a house guest you know they can be incredibly clever finding your food and that makes sense. They had to become better in traits like problem solving because we became better at hiding food from then on your guitar with the max planck institute in germany. She says that battle of the minds has made mice craftier over time longer. Demise was humans better. They are at problem. Solving there are more than a dozen subspecies of house mice worldwide and each began cohabitating with humans at different times in our evolutionary history. Take for example. We're marcus domestic. As it began raiding human pantries around twelve thousand years ago. Whiskas musculus our relationship with them began some eight thousand years ago and musculus castanos that one is a relative newcomer which began cohabitating only three to five thousand years ago and that spread in evolutionary life histories among the three groups gave guenter team and opportunity. They gathered one hundred fifty mice with constituents from all three groups and tested them with seven. Different food puzzles. Each puzzle was baited with a mealworm which the mice could only get by pushing or pulling live for example or extracting a ball of paper from a tube or my favorite opening the window of a lego house and they founded the longer amounts variety had lived with humans. The more likely it was to solve these puzzles. Basically what we are left at with trying to explain these results we see is that the mice really developed higher or enhance cognitive abilities. While living with humans the results appear in the proceedings of the royal society b and as the human footprint on the globe expands. Guenter says. it's more important than ever to understand how we influence animal minds to learn. Why some creatures like house mice adapt while others simply die out.

"Lovely just like moxie voice I would recommend this book to anyone especially if they read in the bath. Thank you Janet for extolling the tactile virtues of the book as well. I'm averaging about one review of the book per week Liz Rookie. Numbers we gotta get those numbers up. Do you think we could get to two hundred by the year anniversary. If you've read the book whatever your honest thoughts are head on over to Amazon or good reads and drop Assir Review Won't you. On the topic of dealing with the press as we were a few minutes ago that can often be a sticky wicket. The conclusion of World War Two saw Germany and its capital of Berlin split into East and west sections with the West controlled by America Britain and France being capitalist and the East controlled by the USSR being Communist. And while we usually refer to them as east and West Germany their official names were the GERMANIC democratic. And the Federal Republic of Germany respectively. Life in east. Berlin was difficult to say the least with the Soviets draining resources from the economy as a form of war reparations and the secret police with wiretaps and informants always listening for dissent disloyalty. As much as twenty percent of the East German population fled to the. West. Before the government began to build the infamous wall in nineteen sixty one putting up over one hundred miles of brick wall and barbed wire fence in a single night. The wall would eventually include Spike Strips Guard towers and even land mines as well as the demolition of nearby buildings to stop people from escaping by jumping from high windows. Contrary how you may have pictured it and definitely how I pictured it until about last year, the wall didn't bifurcated the city but instead went around West Berlin. This because the capital city was entirely within the country of East Germany. I know you would assume if you split a country and its capital into to it must go right down the center but no Berlin was nowhere near the border. The term for this is an enclave, a portion of a state or country surrounded by another state or country. A passport which was hard to obtain was required to go from one side to the other and people had to pass through one of three heavily guarded military checkpoints designated Alpha Bravo and Charlie. Families were divided and people lost their livelihoods because their jobs were on the other side of the wall. Much, in the way of a prison soldiers patrolled the wall and shot on sight anyone who tried to go over under around or through. While there were successful escapes in the nearly three decades the wall stood many of which are utterly fascinating like the family who built their own hot air balloon. Many people did lose their lives in the attempt. As time, went on the government began to grant people greater freedom of travel. But with near prohibitive fees and tons of paperwork requirements though these did not deter everyone. By one, thousand, nine, hundred, nine, the Cold War had thought significantly, and there were sweeping changes in eastern governments. Protests. For Democracy Free Elections and greater personal freedoms were gaining strength. The government tried to placate the citizens by making travel permits easier to obtain. This was announced at a live press conference by Guenter Schabowski. A low level official in the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. At the press conference, he read a list of sundry announcements, but one concerning passport caught the reporters attention. Schakowsky. Said in effect that every East German would now be able to get a passport and go where they jolly well pleased including to the West. A voice from the back of the room shouted, when does this take effect? Schakowsky. Caught off guard by the sudden interest flipped through his papers and tossed out his best guest now immediately. This statement hit the airwaves like a match touching fuse. The citizenry did not know or care that the rule was meant to go into effect the next day with a litany of fine print restrictions. Tens of thousands of people descended on checkpoint Charlie and the other crossing points to west Berlin. The East German border police entirely surprised and severely outnumbered no idea what was happening and orders on how to respond to it eventually just opened the gates. People poured through the checkpoint while others on both sides began to climb the wall sitting on top triumphantly. Someone showed up with a sledgehammer and so the Berlin Wall both the structure and what it stood for came tumbling down. Germany was reunited less than a year later and the Soviet Union dissolved soon after. This nation changing moment could be viewed as a treaties on the importance of reading your notes in advance. Schakowsky had been given the memo shortly before the press conference and had just skimmed it in the car on the way there. The single marching characteristic of the Cold War which held the world in a state of tension for over forty years. was. The imminent threat of a Third World War one that would be fought not with planes and tanks, but with nuclear weapons and would foreseeably be the final. World. War. This extinction level event nearly began on the morning of September twenty sixth nineteen eighty-three. An alarm sounded in. Sherpa. Call fifteen the secret command center outside Moscow where the Soviet military monitor it's early warning satellites over the United States. Five minute man intercontinental ballistic missiles had been launched from an American base, the computers warned. The timing hardly have been worse three weeks earlier. The Soviets had shot down Korean Airlines flight as it entered Soviet airspace killing all two hundred, sixty, nine people on board including a US congressman. President Ronald Reagan had rejected calls for freezing the arms race declaring the Soviet. Union an Evil Empire. Soviet leader. Yuri Andrew Pov was obsessed with fears of an American attack. The critical link in the decision making chain that day was one Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov. He was only two steps removed from the people who would advise Andropov to launch a retaliatory strike. His recommendation would have been received with little or no second guessing. For five agonizing minutes Petrov tried to assess the information that flooded in from computer screens, the telephone and the Intercom. Finally he made his decision, the alert was probably a false alarm. He called headquarters and reported system malfunction. If he was wrong. The first nuclear blast would hit within minutes. What did he base this world saving call on? His Gut. He'd never fully trusted the early warning computer systems. Further, he suspected an attack that brazen would involve more than five missiles. His decision was actually a breach of protocol and disobeying orders was not something taken lightly by the Soviet military. A. Later investigation concluded that Soviet satellites and mistakenly identified sunlight reflecting off clouds as the engines of intercontinental ballistic missiles. It would be some years before the incident came to light and people learn to the name of the man who quite possibly saved the entire world with a phone call. Petrov received no rewards for his actions. This incident and other bugs in the missile detection system embarrassed his superiors and the influential scientists responsible for it. If he had been officially recognized, they would have to be punished..

"Welcome to your space journey where we venture into the future of space exploration and the incredible leaders who are taking us there. Here's your house. Phil. Hello thanks so much for joining me today. This has been exciting summer for space exploration. Just a few short days ago. We witnessed the incredible hop of starship by SPACEX This is very historic. I. Mean I who thought that silence could fly, which is incredible. But just down the road few years, this starship is capable of flying up to a hundred people to the moon. Moon and to Mars that will be just incredible. also We just witnessed last week, the incredible splashdown of astronauts Bob, and Doug who went aboard space is crewed dragon for this historic mission as well and then of course, we saw the launch of Mars perseverance on its seven month journey now to land on the surface of Mars in February of Twenty twenty. One. But. Again, we're happy to return to around the world and space series because again it's not just about what happens here in America, but around the world as well and today we're going to focus on the European Space Agency or ISA. Now, they just had historic moment a few weeks ago to their solar orbit emission launch earlier this year just made a close approach to the sun, and return some incredible close up images with hi Rez images of what sorta resemble campfires on the Sun. Here's a clip from their impress conference where they fortunately took a question from yours truly asking about this amazing images being return from solar or. So. We have a question from co space journey, which is a US podcast, and the journalist is Chuck Fields Hello Chuck. And press question he has what is the approximate size of each of the campfires in today's images. One solar orbiter makes its closest approach to the sun. Forty two, million kilometres. How much smaller campfire features? Would it be able to resolve in size compared to the images released today? So I think would you like to question? Issue the The campfires that we see today are the smallest ones on a couple of hours pixels. a pixel is corresponds to four hundred kilometers spatial resolution. So it's about the size of European countries say that's decisive. The smallest campfires The thing with the solar corona is that it's scaling variant. So if you look at smaller scales, you see smaller stuff. So I'm expecting that's as we go closer, make our images bitter, get higher resolution that we will see yet smaller ones while there's images of solar orbiter are incredible. We'll have more on that later in the episode, as well as some other amazing accomplishments from Isa, but before it gets to that literature, the story of my friend Lane August. Hi I'm lane August with Alpha control a lost in space podcast. We'll you know watching the alarm strong pick that first small step for man? that. Wow, it'd be so cool. So. Cool. To go up into space. But. Regularly. Do these long haul twelve to sixteen hour international flights. I've discovered that my endurance. For being. Confined Small Aluminum Tube. Has Its limit. So I'm afraid that. For me to, get up, in spate. One or two things is gonNA have to happen. They're either going to have to make those spaceships a heck of a lot larger. 'cause I need some room to run. I'm going to be up there for days, weeks or years or two. We really going to have to do something about developing work speed. Or hyper drive or a stargate. Because I don't think I could make it to the Moon Mars, not even to mention out this and Tori until we get something like that. So let's work on that now. "Experience to do. And hopefully get out. Good the Dan. What are the key lessons taken from this period? And do you think any of any of those will be carried forward into how you approach your job in Formula One after this? Yes and I agree. Go back before I made sure the data that we give ourselves a little bit more margin in everything we do if you have got the. What That person and we as an industry. Don't forget how Bernabei are. Actually business involved I. Want you know so? We don't have to forget that. Because then we can look always plan something. Wait a moment. We need a ten percent awesome here. You know what we do if it goes home so I think that the whole below and. Then everything goes stood again. It's very easy to forget because you the arms from again. The background peachy again. Crisis always equals opportunity, but it also equals always a lot of risk. It looks like you've managed to skirt. Round the risk as spoke for now. And there's a lot of people who were saying Oh. You Know Formula One is much stronger from this without really defining what they mean by that, but. Do you actually. Are you a glass half full guy on this respect him. Do you believe that the sport actually can emerge from this stronger? Yes I believe EDYTA again. It'd be said. Before became to get and decided them on on the Budget Capello one, and this is a good initiative decided Berry creeped. Next the comic I'm going to design a new, so we did some things which we go DOA. At the the twenty two relations should make it at a car. I don't say Gee Bo because nothing is cheap along. Come home, but never be cheap. You know a little bit more efficient, effing a little bit more cost efficient. But I, think know somewhere. Now beneath to make sure that we don't forget about the good times defrosting history do let's discuss about baking the Budget Cup up again, you know. Or take it away. I don't think it will happen, but I would keep it in my mind. The shouldn't be doing it, and that is how become how stonewall what you ask if I think. Outvoted because if you get to yet is that you know that they're not complete. No, I'm not speaking generally coup because we haven't gone by using ETHICA compete calendar. I'm very optimistic. Touch pass for that. We get to the chief and. Dumping. Can just see. Everybody didn't include that by. Owning teams equals like guy to get out of this and radiating out of this is to gus helpful. So it's interesting, because obviously we hit with the budget cap. The some of the smaller teams yourself included Actually it won't necessarily make a difference your spending, but at least you now know there is an upper limit, and of course, the other teams that were spending more that something that they've got to to work, too so this whole approach, this whole new deal approach that was kind of fundamental to get to this point. It, but it sounds like you're not one hundred percents. Show that it's Kinda here to stay you WanNa make sure the that's locked into this forward, right? Absolutely entities locked relations. They established through FAA financial relations between bad before, so the distinction before in Denver, we could discuss that people a budget company place a six months ago. Be couldn't take no of that because there was nothing in place, but going back to the budget cub. You say as you said the reaching that point. Yet, hopefully in the future will be can, but the good thing is if you see it like this in the moment before the budget. But just a moment because there's no vodka is that it got? The big themes is about between Hamilton fifty million for a small team, if you will be made between ca fifty. Is Not the good step I would say yes. It's not been equalize it yet, but it's a good stead. Could use. By. Five Times which I think it's it's. It's a big achievement most of that our day, isn't it? I mean the operational side of things is more or less assign from team to team, so the differences their ability to make a demonstrably foster carbon you basic. Corrected and he sources in development, and doing just a a making developments that had a big. If because going basing scuffling the same for everybody, you know, it's a little bit up and down five percent difference, depending which state but the Costa Anyway outside, but at the cost despair despair pasta off the saying because we use. Awesome at the same amount can know so, but the big thing you say is the development that just. CanNot be a big advantage? Investing a lot of money for that is small gains because demolished there anymore demons the Mondays, there you can spend. You think enough's being done to give the smaller teams and more encouraging future that. You've got a chance of good success, maybe not. The next year, but longer term. Never not be done. "What sort of world would it be if it was a world of coordinated Technology Raven world. But so yeah, we know now that Corbin's like ravens used tools, and this more recent study showed that once ravens had learned that they could use a particular tool to open a box and get a piece of Dog Kibble, which they absolutely love, they would choose if they could to grab that particular box opening tool and keep it on hand win. The food box was not even present so that they could use it to open the box later whenever it was presented to. To them maybe you know minutes or hours later, so that's already interesting like the bird is recognizing okay I can use this tool to get food. I'm going to hang onto the tool. Even though I can't use it right now. Gather thinking ahead. Also the same researchers demonstrated evidence that Ravens on average have a pretty strong ability to delay gratification to get better reward like those as demonstrated in humans with the marshmallow test. Yeah, yeah, so of course the classic marshmallow test, I? Why am I getting a tickle? The that somehow people have questioned the setting of that test now. They, certainly been a legacy of reproducing the test and altering the yeah different different versions of the test me I don't remember what that is off the top of my head. Maybe we can revisit that in the future. That'd be fun basic ideas like you know. If you cannot eat this marshmallow for five minutes, you'll get three marshmallows or something. and they do a version of that kind of thing with different animals to test their abilities by in large animals are terrible at. At this just hopeless they live in the moment. They have impulses immediately. If a piece of food is in front of them, they're going to eat it, but in this this current group what the study found is that when you give the ravens choice between okay, you can grab an okay piece of food right now, or you can grab a tool or a bartering token that the ravens have learned can be used to access a better more delicious piece of food later. One of these experiments showed the ravens will pick the delayed path to better food more than seventy percent of the time it. Was Seventy three point eight percent of the time they'd get the tool or the bartering token than they knew would lead to the better delicious piece of kibble. Oh, well, and in these experiments, the intelligence of the Ravens in question was even sometimes an impediment to controlling the experiment, because for example I was reading. A motherboard article about their research where they talked about how there was one raven started building his own tools to defeat the box. So instead of using the tool, they were supplying the Raven. It was like I. Can I can get around this, and so it was like putting together sticks in an arrangement there were could trigger an open the box without the tool. They supplied it in also that one raven apparently started trying to teach the other ravens how to exploit the box. Wow, and neurologically speaking. It's been shown for example twenty. Twenty sixteen paper in a by Ochowicz at all that birds like cords, and some parents have an enormous number of neurons packed into the four brain areas, quote, large parrots chords have the same or greater four brain neuron counts as monkeys with much larger brains. Avian brains thus have the potential to provide much higher cognitive power per unit mass than do mammalian brains, so mammals primates like us. WE'VE GOT A. A bigger brains than birds do, but it seems like birds are really packing in the neuron connections in there to make make more with less matter, but there are also really startling. examples of social intelligence incorporates like Ravens like their stories of how the trainers who have close relationships with Ravens can train these ravens to follow and fly ahead of them. There's even video as watching before we came in. In here of a BBC segment, where they had a raven trainer, who had a relationship, a previous existing relationship with this raven that he'd trained for a long time, and this guy's riding along on the side of fast moving truck, with the Raven just like flying along chasing after him, trying to land on his arm so I mean that kind of activity. You like the Raven chasing after it makes me okay. I see. Potential possibility for like a delivery system. Involving Ravens doesn't seem entirely out of the question. Just remembering when we did this earlier episode on Bird Intelligence, one of the things we did was I interviewed one of the researchers who'd worked on a paper that we talked about in that episode on on bird intelligence The researcher owner Guenter Yes, and you know I I was asking him about the differences in cognitive ability between different bird species, and basically the question of have we underestimated all birds, or is it just basically core Vitz? Parrots that are smarter than we thought, and he was pretty generous in his estimate of all birds. Though of course, Corbin's in Paris he said you know essentially, there's no major cognitive difference between what they can do, and what primates can. Can Do so yeah, he's putting them like way up there on the cognitive ladder th, they're much smarter than we realized for a long time, but even birds like pigeons chickens, he put more on the level of mice and rats. which you know, I think the average person probably assumed. Oh, my sir lot smarter than pigeons. That's not necessarily true. Yeah, and in the idea that a chicken is up there as well I mean check made verner Herzog. Who I believe what he was. "Of the class and let's get right. Today's topic I wear a hat keeps me warm in the winter and it keeps me warm in the summer when. I'm in a store or restaurant that has its air conditioning said Solo that it feels like a brass toilet seat on the shady side of an iceberg. So imagine how I felt when I walked into a classy restaurant and I'm told I can't get a table unless I checked by hat to hat for. Christ's sake does not like I walked in with an AK forty seven or a horse with diarrhea for some reason. The restaurant thinks it's too good for hats and if customers want to wear a hat go someplace else. We don't want today. We're going to talk about pretentious restaurants. And why they think that all men should be wearing a coat then they give you some little green jacket that doesn't fit. It was probably picked up at a second hand store. And if the guest embarrassed and who wouldn't be that's their problem because the restaurant has its standards and it's more important that those followed even if it makes the paying guest feel unwelcome by now. You know where I come down on the issue so what to others have to say the Huffington Post warning signs that you are in or about to enter a pretentious restaurant. The first is its name. If it's unpronounceable those fuller Shea. Anything hide your wallet. Ambience is a factor. The walls packed with old books. Bad examples of modern art or antics. It's probably a pretentious restaurant. If the menu includes Foams deconstructed anything ingredients. You wouldn't feed the neighbor's cat than the food is over shaft honestly. I been at a restaurant that had a deconstructed B. L. T. Sandwich now. Most of US would call that a salad topped with tomatoes croutons and Bacon but says labeled deconstructed. It costs three dollars more. The next sign of pretentious restaurant is held childlike. It is fried twinkies with C. Salting one lastly look the people around you if the people are wearing two thousand dollar suits or a dripping with jewelry. They're there to be seen not because they believe the food is just that good. It's probably not in twenty sixteen. The New York Post did review of a new restaurant called Guenter seeger. If you wanted to see the menu forget about there isn't one you pay one hundred eighty five dollars per person and you get whatever everyone else is having that night and you pay that money upfront. But it does include tip. You pay another hundred and fifty dollars for a wine pairing but it's difficult to know what wine to order when you don't know what you'll be eating as for the menu you get that as you're going out the door. The restaurant that says closed no surprise there. Then there are. The plates chargers with plates have become passe instead. Our food is served to us on a plank of wood a slate rapid paper or ball jar in London. There's a relatively new restaurant called Muse. The hundred eighty five dollar tasting menu tells you little about what you're going to eat after all. Do you think you know better than the chef what you should eat. The first course in this tin item tasting menu is called always picking. If that doesn't help you understand what you're going to be served. The chef offers this helpful description. Snacks inspired by the season. This stems from the recollections of being in the garden with my mother picking anything that was edible. Oh good random food the rest of the menus pretty much based on the Chefs Childhood Memories. Now we finish up with what is one of the least pretentious restaurants in the world McDonalds. A recent AD in Britain takes a chef's knife to a pretentious restaurant at age says the advert was created by Leo Burnett and reminds viewers. That it's ingredients are also used by other outlets. Put a link to that in the show notes so now when it comes to pretentious restaurants. Pick a place where you like the food. Feel comfortable and know what you'll be eating. That makes you a smart cookie. Hungry in Nashville is brought to you by out of my pocket. Productions and copyrighted by me. Jim grinstead you can listen to hungry in Nashville on our website. Persistence of division: after the Berlin Wall
"Tomorrow marks thirty years since the Berlin Wall fell with the Iron Curtain Separating East West Young East Germans dash the last one hundred to the wall and will hold into the West by West German food. They don't come on. The wall was built overnight in nineteen sixty one dividing city and a country in symbolizing a divided continent but three decades ago. There was a change in the air. In East Germany. Revolutions had begun to sweep through central and eastern Europe. Communist rule was beginning thing to come to an end. There was a sense having lived in a pressure cooker not just that year but for a number of years preceding it and I think we all I decided to go on like this and macelroy is a senior editor at the economist in nineteen eighty nine. She was working as a correspondent in East Germany. My the experience that the fall of the Berlin Wall was sitting at a press conference with condition of ski head of the Berlin Party. Who accidentally fall by trying to relax travel restrictions and then saying for immediately so a number of us then rushed to checkpoint Charlie and do other crossing points tried to persuade border guards at the wall was they didn't believe us and then a couple of Acer it was on the evening news and that seemed to who people like a suction from across the city tens of thousands of people to go due to the wall and to stop shouting? Let us cross. Let Us Cross and about eleven o'clock in the evening. The gods was no other advice just gave up an I did that. And that's the way it happened. quickey is sue easy enthusiast. People celebrated celebrated on both sides of the wall some took to it with hammers and shovels tearing it down piece by piece not surprising lots of hugging lots tosses of vodka and we take some with the Berlin Wall in historical significance. WHO's a healing of the scar? God that ran throughout Germany it was a country being slotted back together again but it was also a Europe whole and free. It was about pushing. I'm back together something. It'd been destroyed in that Calamitous War in the twentieth century for those living in East Germany the change was profound and I watch television all night and I was in tears and I just couldn't believe what I saw. I have the feeling something's happening in this year. Of course no idea and no thought that the war would come down. Cornelia Guenter manages our Berlin Bureau who was born in East Germany. My knife has changed enormously many aspects first of all I was able to travel. That was always my wish and in my desire for me it was very very happy thing that has had a very positive impact on my life but not everyone in the east called at the same in his speech last month. German Chancellor Angela Markle who is herself east. Germany said in Ulster. Today must all learn to understand why live from many people in East Germany German unity has not been a solely positive experience. Reunification made successes of some victims of others. Today it's being debated like never before one of the interesting things that's happened in the last few years. Is that large parts of West Germany. How many have started to realize that the way that they look at reunification is not the way many people in the east so retort experienced? It's almost half of West German. Say They consider reunification to have been a success story and the same goes for less than a third of East Germans. Tom nuttal Berlin bureau chief. The speed with which change with brought to East Germany was almost unfathomable if Germany was to be folded into what was a modern market economy like West Germany. Then mass layoffs and deindustrialization the industrialization were inevitable. Because voss way to these Germany was simply uncompetitive with mass privatization of East German companies to bring them into onto the market. That was a union of the currencies that ensured that the East German currency could be exchanged at one to one rate for the West German deutschemark. Moth what that meant is that firms in East Germany. All of a sudden having to pay their workers salaries that they could no longer afford and voss way to them with bust overnight essentially and had to lay their workers off by one estimate. Eighty percent of East German workers at some point in the post reunification years found themselves out of a job. And do you see evidence of that trauma still today. Yes you do you see it. In a small but persistent economic gap wages ages in the east are between eighty to eighty five percent the average of what they are in the West as productivity gap the proportion of large German companies companies that are headquartered in the east is absolutely tiny and then you have things like they call it. The transfer of elite of the sort of upper echelon of public jobs in the East only four percent of them occupied by east.

East Germany and their wives stitch spend together to make the balloon the burner was made out of propane bottles and a stove pipe. The cast iron platform had posted on the corners for hand holes in rows anchors and the guardrail. What's a clothesline the whole time they were building the balloon. They were still going to work in their first. A few tests of their balloon were unsuccessful and they experimented with different materials to improve the balloons construction on the night of July third one thousand nine hundred ninety nine the cells family went to a meadow about twenty five miles from the border and attempted to make the trip to West Germany. The vessels cels had backed out afraid. The plan was too risky. Unfortunately the balloon dropped to the ground due to water vapor that added weight to the balloon in in the family did not make it across the border. They abandoned the balloon and wet back home fearing the East German authorities would be on their trails Thune soon. The Celtics decided to build a new larger balloon on September Sixteenth Nineteen seventy-nine. Both families went to the launch site. I took a twenty eight minute hot air balloon trip across the border into West Germany people who lived in Iowa the Bavarian town near where the hot air balloon landed offered the family's food money clothes housing and jobs the Celtics later moved to Switzerland then back to Germany after German Senate reunification in one thousand nine hundred ninety. The story of the balloon escape has been told in a book and movies. I'm eavesdrop coat and hopefully a you know a little more about history today than you did yesterday.
