He guides the formation, development and implementation of all programs and policies affecting the Army National Guard. Force of nearly 335,000 soldiers and 50 States, Three territories and the District of Columbia. General Jensen welcome back to Memorial Day and Minnesota military radio. Tom Lines. It's great to hear from you again. Uh, quick, be back on the show. I think this is my eight year my eighth consecutive year thing for Thanks for Let me call in and be a small part of this. This year's show. General. I think I had standing orders to make sure I kept room for General Jensen and and General make you politely said absolutely. Let's get him on the show and see how he's doing and Sir. I know you've been out in Washington, D C and director of the gas out of the Army National Guard for almost a year. You were with us last year on Memorial Day Show as your eyes Your reflection on Memorial Day changed Now that you're Taking care of soldiers all over the United States and three territories and the district, Colombia. I don't know that it's really changed. Um, I mean, it's still I mean, much like general manky. Just described 19 call of your death this morning. Said listen to the whole the entire show. You know, we talk about the soldiers and the families that we that we know personally that we had contact with. That that we lost while we served with them. And, you know, every day I get the honor driving past Arlington National Cemetery on Do you know much like driving past the forts now? Cemetery. You know, you drive by and you can't help But remember those soldiers in those families and so I don't think it's changed. It just remains a very personal Uh, holiday for productive, ascetic served. In general, Can you give us just a little input house? How difficult is the pandemic man to deal with all over the United States with the Army National Guard? Yeah, well, I took what? You know what we've experienced is, you know probably What we've seen on on the news is that you know the pandemic had different impacts of different times. Two different Parts of the country and just being able to manage yourself lead ourselves through those those particular stressful moments. And any any region of the country and then obviously the impact that it might have on unreadiness of the Army National Guard because, well, we have done admirable job serving domestically here over the last year year and a half. We continue to meet the requirements overseas as well again. General Manky laid out Minnesota contribution overseas on their sword is not alone in that effort, so just being able to lead ourselves through that, as we continue to prepare soldiers and units toe go in harm's life. Eh, sir? Good morning. Um, in the previous segment, Tom and I talked a little bit about how the Minnesota Guard is doing and you know, I know a couple weeks ago we were together, but Maybe you could articulate for the rest of our listeners What you think or you know, I know for guard nation as a whole Cross of 54. What do you think? The op temple in the business. Is doing to the force. And, you know, I think you articulated pretty positive news. When we talked a couple weeks ago, maybe could share that, sir. Yeah. Games, things showing. I appreciate that. And you know, like all of our society, obviously. There's been stressed to the force stress of the force through the endemic stress on the force to some of the domestic missions that we Had to take on over the last year. Um, but we're resilient force. I think Chaplin went talked about that this morning about the resiliency of our force. And so as as you laid out, Sean We see our retention rate across the country higher this year than it has been In the short term. I think that's an indication of a healthy organization we've already met are in strength mission Nationally. I think that's a sign of a healthy organization. And I think We're all looking out to the horizon here a little bit as we see, you know, potentially the end of the pandemic. Our National Guardsmen. Have been able to administer over 10 million vaccine doses to the to the citizens of this country. And so, um it's been a difficult year year and a half, but I think I think we'd shown our resiliency our ability to meet every mission that our nation is asked us to meet. And to do it professionally. It's just been, You know, I think the highlight of many of our careers is to observe during this very difficult time. General Jensen. Most of the service members that we interview over the years are proud to serve and perform their deployments in the federal missions. But over the course of the last year we've seen Some of general monkeys, airman and soldiers that were thoroughly pleased with the ability to step up and help with the vaccines help with the pandemic. Move things around and help their friends and neighbors. I'm sure you're seeing that across the across the garden across the United States. Well, I'm just used the example here in Washington, D C would know we brought 26,000 National Guardsmen wash in DC in support of Operation Capital Response and when you would go talk to those soldiers in their midst. Role, eventually proud to be here. A immensely proud TOC contribute in in They're their way to ensure that we had a peaceful transition during the inauguration, and then that we maintain a secure environment here. And while that missions come to an end, uh, I know that the soldiers Norman and I thought you were very proud to participate and in that operation Hey, sir. A question for us here is, you know as people, you know, we're starting our summer season as well. And kids will be, uh, more free from school. I know when I was out there a couple weeks when I came through Reagan, it was pretty quiet in Minnesota, and all things are starting to open up more. Um, as far as what's going on. What are you seeing out there? As far as Ah family, maybe from Minnesota coming looking like maybe come out and see some of the sights on the mall, is it? Are things opening up people able to move around or or what's the status in the capital region as far as a pandemic. Yeah, Absolutely. Things are starting that O open up here. I mean, obviously in D. C. We kind of followed her Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia and each one of the three entities have a little bit different rules. But As you know, Shawn. I lived really close to Ah, the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium. And just, you know, my my litmus test is the number of people I see on the street attending, not baseball games, and that's going up significant like the last two weeks, and so You know the mall's open many of the museum's guarantees he are open, so I would I wouldn't describe it is we're fully open up for business. But we're trending that way and and we're beginning to see a lot more. Visitors come TBC, So I think it's going to be an exciting summer here in Washington, D C Channel Jensen one last question. Are there some ceremony's coming back now for Memorial Day, years, most of that going to be deferred till next year? Yeah. So the president will be over in Arlington National Cemetery in about a half hour to the traditionally re plane of that over there might affect later today. I'm going to go over and I think I'm gonna spend My moment of remember and so great at Arlington, but it's it's still not. A lot of large public events are international cemetery is open for visitors. But no large gatherings yet, and I think we're all waiting for for that signal toe open up and conduct more public ceremonies. And General Jensen. Thanks for bringing that up. This afternoon, we invite all of our listeners and everyone across the United States to observe a national moment of resemblance.
