'Good Kills' Author David Englehardt Is #1 in Christian Ethics on Amazon

"Show I'm talking to my friend David engel heart who has a new book out good kills God good and the sort. It's a funny thing. So many people buy books through Amazon and Amazon has all these subcategories so they tell you your number one in whatever obscure category no one ever heard of. My Bonham for book is consistently number one in systematic theology. What could be more strange and depressing than that? It's like I'm kicking Wayne Gruden's behind. Hey, no, it's kind of funny to me. And so your book or I think and my Luther book was number one in Christian popes. Not to be confused with all the other types of popes that are out there. But I mean, it's so bizarre. So your book, good kills, is smashing the competition and what category at this point too, but Christian ethics it's been smashing. Oh, Christian social issues and then Christian

"Ed green adam hill. And we're here each week to give you some of our thoughts on the las vegas raiders for entering into the world of news and topics. We find interesting here. We go out of my think. The only thing we're going to talk about this week is what we should. We know what happened with jon. Gruden raiders head coach. He resigned on monday after his emails from the past came to light in a new york. Times article this happened. actually tomorrow. It's going to be a week from tomorrow. That does happen Back friday win the one. Racial trope came out that he had an email about the union chief of the players association. When you heard about the at one email how much did you think. How serious do you think this would get. Would it get serious fascinating when you heard about that. Did you think there was more out. Yeah you we did that. Outcasts last friday so many big red moving other. There's something moving in this week. It feels like it was two years ago. And i spent a week at this point but i think the thing. We really kept coming back to in that first reaction. This is in the many after the first story grove. I think that that we kept coming back was well. What this does is i all. It's offensive in. Its own right. Obviously appall net. You'll need that kind of language. And that sort of thing. But i think that is the the raiders a really tough spot this today. This is going to be really tough decision. Innovate if they're gonna have to making the but the things to look out for it away for is what is next. At the time. I think our thinking was hey. Anybody in the league has ever been around him. That ever heard anything that hasn't asked to grind now Has an open door. The you know to turn over more information to say. Hey i also heard you know once when he was around me this they makes kind of joke and I think we thought that there was going to be a period. Where you know. That's how these things usually happened right. One report open the floodgate if this is the pattern of behavior and if it didn't if we hear anything else i think you could say it was a huge mistake vice later today He'd probably be disciplined pretty severely. But you'd probably the answer by that. It's your job whether that's right or wrong. Usually how these things play out but you know like we spent the doors open and what else out in to know something and it turned out. It was from the same source of information those emails that that came from an investigation into the washing football team. So we didn't have to wait for other people to say anything you know. They they play the game on sunday. The raiders had made a determination. And i think whoever put these emails out there Looked at that as. Hey you're going to go seventy two hours without doing anything about this. And now you're gonna have a press conference on. They were gone through. This actually said we've moved on That's not cool. And so then you know the the rest of out at that point. I believe on monday. The story hit their story hit. I believe within thirty seconds. I've called you and and John donoso joe of the business over it within an hour it was over so i i got the nine one one red alerts from the phone from you. Because you'd rather than your times articles couple things here. Let's go back to when the on to make way to say that. That was warranted. My one one it was warranted. No no. I'm not making funny. It was warranted. I mean you know. I might have been asleep. It was two in the afternoon to got the early morning show. Taking a nap. Woke me up. I'm glad you did. Because i had to go to work at that point but i want to go back to the friday. You're right we were on the on the podcast end when the first thing came out the release from the raiders certainly intimated that they had more documents at the nfl had sent on. And you put this out on twitter right away. Stay tune when they got more documents if they had the emails at that point the misogynist ones the anti-gay ones. The anti women wants all the thing. He's now really led to his resignation. It they had those at that point. Why in the world would they allow him to coach on sunday of all the things that i wanna be clear and i. I'm sure we'll director part of it. But the right now thursday evening. We've really have from our david. We've all call them. We've all talked to briefly. Got me on the property this point but he didn't say a couple of things here and there but really. It's essentially been no comment for mark davis and i m okay with it from the standpoint of listen. They've maxed out some of these things in the path. Which just right back at you know. I can breathe trying to make an immediate statement after the george fully trial. The trial They they tried to react to. I can understand taking your car and trying to formulate your thoughts It's anywhere away. I thought we we've talked about like inside the billions a worldwide. We're inside the building every bowl. It's not to say we're involved in the story but we're covering the is changing every second it's been a whirlwind You know i. I don't want you like. I've exhausted like from this week with people inside. The building are like I'm okay with taking a step back and collecting your thoughts and saying the right thing and try to say the right thing. I will say like a couple of players. This league in a couple of coaches has sent some things and phrases have been picked apart. Where okay you're saying the right thing for ninety percent of the time but this is not acceptable. That's the kinds of things on talking about. Want to get it right. You wanna come out. You wanna step the right tall and say the right thing and sometimes that requires some thought in and i'm okay with it from that standpoint. I've not really okay with not answering this. I suppose if the raiders got these emails on friday if they were aware of these emails on friday and they just hadn't come to late publicly. Why on earth for jon gruden on that side on sunday. I don't know if i'm gonna agree or disagree. I think at some point if you're saying that mark davis is collecting a stock to some point. Mark davis has to stand up. Adopt people doc in the media and talk to his fans his general manager. Mike mayock gas is interim coach for saatchi has is quarterback. Derek carr has is coordinators. Is the other players. Have mark davis the face of that franchise and he needs to step in here at some point. Maybe it's next week. I'm not sure when it is and talk about the guy that when he signed as the coach for ten years trying a million dollars he almost brought to tears. He chased jon gruden for years and years years loved him like a brother wanted nothing else but jon gruden coach and now it's led his resignation at some point mark davis. I think you agree has to say something. I'm not very speaking till january. Like i'm speaking from monday or tuesday like i'll i'll give him a week again. It right. I mean. Listen what i was referring to and i'll just it back into it. I think you would agree. Derek carr was pretty good and he's yeah well. Let's hold off on terrific good car close with. Hey she basically he got the first but the he said let's have everybody emails back comes off as excuse and it's not and i know what he say. I actually agree with him. Honestly just to get it out there. I agree with them. Like i think anybody. That's out here. You know fiery away and saying you know. There's no question here about the privacy issue than all those other things. I would agree with and i would say there's a lot of people out there that are really wagging their finger that if we looked at their tax on their email they probably wouldn't have a job. Yeah i i think that's a fair point. I agree with their car saying it but.

"So to Sean, you cover the Las Vegas Raiders for the athletic. How would you describe the last 72 hours of your life? Yeah, it's been one of the most hectic stretches of my short career, you know I've only been doing this for about four years now, but I'm gonna initially comes down and it's like that moment of shock that you have, and then obviously as a journalist, you gotta get to work and kind of tell the story and the most comprehensive wage you can for the readers and so between the press conferences that have gone through the team, reporting on my own doing podcasts like this or radios or TV spots have been pretty much nonstop. I would really say since last Friday, not even just so much Monday, but does this whole kind of cycle started when those emails first started to come out last Friday? Well, speaking of that, let's rewind and just do a quick reminder of how things unfolded. It has been a little bit head spinning. As you mentioned, it really started on Friday after The Wall Street Journal published an email Jon Gruden had written back in 2011 to Bruce Allen, who was then the GM of the Washington football team. In that email, he wrote about demoral Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, quote, DOM Boris spelled UMB or ISS, DOM Boris Smith has lips the size of Michelin tires. So to Sean, you know, when you first saw that email last week, what was your reaction? Yeah, I mean, it immediately registered with me as racist. There was really no middle ground with it when it comes to making comments about the size of black people's lips or something that really has been happening for hundreds of years and kind of when it comes to the depictions of it in art since 1800s through Jim Crow, which started off as kind of caricatures and then it became something that really helped drive laws that I have to slavery was over continue to oppress black people in this country and not just that, but it's just a combination of downplaying the intelligence of Smith who's obviously very well educated man and intelligent man, but downplaying his intelligence through his physical appearance. Because everything about it was racist, just to comfort level how casual it seemed. It was very apparent to me, the chances are, this is in his only time saying something like this. And if you're that comfortable sitting that through an email, imagine what that person may be saying, you know, on casual conversation or text or phone calls. And so it definitely had me question his character immediately. For me, I mean, I'm the only black rider that covers the team that works for an external outlet. It does make me have feel like I have a sense of responsibility, not only to write about these things and to talk about them, but if there is a figure that says something that's racist, it's my job to confront them on it. And to hold them accountable. And can you talk a little about how Gruden and the Raiders tried to handle the situation initially when it was just that first email about Moore Smith that had come to light last Friday? They had opportunity to address it then and just get out the way to answer questions in front of media instead of doing that. They basically duct it going into the game weekend. And so that part of it, I thought it was a pretty weak move on top of obviously the email being offensive. And John Gruden spoke, maybe like 5 or ten minutes before the story with the email came out apologizing or coming up with the excuse that he did, and you're saying it was referring to a term he says is rubber lips that he used for liars. I apologize for Friday saying he uses the term rubber lips to describe someone he feels is lying. The 58 year old Gruden was working as a Monday Night Football analyst for ESPN at the time. Allowed him to go ahead and coach. After the game Sunday, he spoke. I'm not a racist. I can't tell you how sick I am. I apologize again to Dee Smith. But I feel good about who I am and what I've done my entire life. And I apologize for the insensitive remarks I had no, you know, I had no racial intentions with those remarks at all. I don't have an ounce of racism in me. I had an issue with the press elevator at Allegiant Stadium. So a lot of the media members included myself conveniently didn't make it down for his press conference, so first time I had a chance to ask him a question about it was Monday before everything else sort of came out and you know, I asked him what he learned from the situation and he really kind of didn't answer the question. Conversations that you had with others or your own reflection? What have you learned just from the reaction to the email and just seeing how wars can affect others? Yeah, I've learned a lot. And again, I'm not going to rehash the event again. I think I feel very good about the things I have learned. I also feel really good about what I stand for, as I said yesterday and I'll be happy to talk about football, but I'll just leave it at that. That was the only question he received about the situation. Monday morning before everything else came out. So it almost been already moved on from and what I wrote that day is while it is, you know, one email from ten years ago, he kind of used that excuse, so it was a one time outburst. None of that really means anything unless your actions back that up and obviously as we went on to see. It wasn't the case. So let's fast forward to Monday evening. The New York Times reports on a new set of emails sent from 2011 to 2018 and there is just a laundry list of offensive stuff in these emails. He suggests women shouldn't be NFL referees. He uses derogatory terms to describe gay people, including the F word. At that time, jashan, it seemed pretty clear that John Gruden's career in the NFL was over. Oh, yeah. Whether he was resignation or him getting fired. Like he had to go. There was no way that he could move forward. Really, with any team, but particularly with the Raiders, obviously, you know, most of their roster is black, like, every team in the league, but they also have Carl Nassau on their roster who's the first openly gay player to be on the active roster. Obviously the Raiders have women that work for the franchise as well in other departments. I mean, the raters have a pretty long history of diversity and inclusion and pushing those things forward under our Davis before he passed away and his son Mark David was trying to continue that through his ownership. And so everything that grew and said, it was just so antithetical to what the Raiders stand for. And even if it didn't, you know, even they had no history in their stuff. You just can't have somebody who thinks that way. And it's from a lot of things he said. I feel pretty comfortable saying he's a bigot. You can't have that person being the face of your franchise. Which Jon Gruden was. I mean, John Gruden was the star player. He made all the decisions. He was a head coach. He was the biggest name and most recognizable figure in the organization really if that person is representing these things that he obviously does through these emails. He just can't be at the forefront of your organization any longer. On a Wednesday to Sean, raiders quarterback, Derek Carr actually said something that I found a little bit haunting. He said, when talking about Jon Gruden, no one is perfect. No one's perfect, you know? If we just started opening up everybody's private emails and texts, you know, people would start sweating a little bit. You see what I'm saying? Hopefully, hopefully not too many, you know. Do you ever just sit there and kind of wonder how many people within the NFL are thinking and feeling the kinds of things that Jon Gruden express? I mean, really, the situation and what it illuminated, it was just saying the quiet part out loud. I don't think anybody is surprised that the NFL is not sure on people who are racist or misogynistic or homophobic. This is part of the football culture that I do the two earlier and when you look at what the people in positions of power look like, it doesn't surprise you that they think this way and Jon Gruden is far from the only one. There's no illusions about that. He just got caught. Obviously, he was emailing NFL executives and there were other people who evolved in his emails as well. This kind of thing is so widely accepted to the point that somebody as notable as John Gruden would feel comfortable sending that from his company and email account to an NFL executive on his company email account. The other thing I sensed in Derek Carr's comments was the suggestion that he maybe thinks the Raiders are being singled out. You know, from the way that he talked about what might happen if all of the emails from the NFL's investigation of the Washington football team were released. But maybe that's what they should do for all coaches and VMs and owners from now on. There's open up. You've got to open up everything. You want to see what happens. And I've seen people make that suggestion elsewhere, too, that Jon Gruden and the Raiders were.

"I think that's an interesting quote. Okay so where are we john. Gruden's gone you. Don't mark davis. Of course it's resignation but mark davis asked about it yesterday. At the raiders practice said. Don't ask me as the league. Which tells me they told. Mark davis fire him. Which of course is now resignation. But jon gruden had say fifty million dollars left on that contract reports about one hundred million true. Do you think he's walking away with zero now. Of course not that. Resignation should mean that but now they said are john. You're going to go and he said fine. I know a lot of these emails Where the bodies buried and they probably said. Well we'll give you pick a number twenty million to go wet and not talk about and structured payments to make sure you don't talk about. I just think there's a lot going on here. And the fact is. I just mentioned this before. Transparency breeds trust. There's no transparency here about this. Six hundred fifty thousand emails about this issue about why we're not hearing anything about the washington team. We're hearing everything about a coach of the raiders. Who's been deposed. What what so. Transparency bridge trust. We don't have that here and the end the opposite of that breeds this kind of these comments. I get about the. Nfl owners being kind of a mafia. Like the just there's a code and they're not gonna turn on daniel snyder and they're not gonna turn on other people affected in these emails but they'll sacrifice grew coaches are expendable unless the coaches are in good graces. But this guy's not clearly and now it ruined piles on gruden. listen again. sometimes. I just feel i gotta keep saying this. What he did was repugnant. But i just think it's interesting. A lot of people are coming out piling on rudy about. Oh yeah i knew. I knew i'm like come on. Never said across word about gruden until a week ago. Now you knew he was like it. I just lose you know to me. You lose credibility with those contacts so where we are. And they'll be a drumbeat as i've been doing to sort of see more but nfl owners probably know am. I'm not sure they're right but it probably know this. There'll be some other scandal next week. I'll be something else to talk. And the games. Of course now. The monday night game got hijacked this news because of the timing. But there's always games there's always games there's tonight you know the eagles in the bucks which i'll be streaming for on twitch please come to my twitch stream andrew brandt live police do but the nfl owners know that there's always drama. I said this this week. The nfl is full of intrigue drama an interest and then there are the games. Not the games are just a front for this crazy business. Okay.

"Of this other stuff was address it makes everything else. Feel like window dressing connor and i think this is where you often hear. People talk about the difference between diversity and inclusion and that you can make an efforts to hire people from different backgrounds and representing different groups but ultimately if there isn't an inclusive culture these people will have a hard time ascending to the tops of organizations gaining real power and the nfl ultimately may be a place that they don't want to work and i think that's what these windows represent is some of the entrenched values value is a weird word to use. It's like the anti value but some of the entrenched lines of thinking that are in the nfl and that ultimately have prevented a lot of the progress forward that we should have seen by this point another pothole traffic and flight delays aging public transportation. Congress close to making historic investments in america's infrastructure. It's up to the house to finish the job. Past the infrastructure investment and jobs act paid for by business. Continue to support local moneda all year long by investing in education engaging in hispanic focus recruiting a training and keeping us connected. We believe that. We are unstoppable after all night without the other so okay. Let's move on to the least important topic we're going to discuss on the show. And that is where the raiders organization goes from here And then more. Broadly where the nfl goes from here. But let's let's start with the raiders. I mean this was the guy who was brought in to shepherd this organization for the next Yellow us four years into a ten year. Deal and look. I don't think else would have been surprised. It was sort of six more years of mediocrity and he got another ten year deal for mark davis but they have to sort of change up now and it has been a middling organization and i'm not quite sure what direction they have because the previous direction was just Were jon gruden and his football team and we're just going to be that. Yeah i mean it's interesting. If you think about had mark davis will. Head mark. Davis stuck with jack del rio. I mean they were in the playoffs. They are in ascending franchise. They had khalil. Mack in amari cooper Where would they be now. I think that would be kind of an interesting thought exercise. But if nulla if you look at the two thousand eighteen in two thousand nineteen coaches who were high around the same time. There's certainly some very talented coaches that are still there especially in two thousand. Nineteen the class But a lot of those guys were again available and raid interview. Two thousand eighteen. You know where they would be You know you think about Coaches who have perpetually not gotten a chance and it's like you know how how different would've dare cars career ben if you know they were one of the first seems to hire eric. B enemy or another coach. That still hasn't gotten the chance like that and see wonder all these. What if if they really wanted to make a change. They wanted to make a splash for the franchise but opted not to go with kind of the object of mark davis affection. What this whole thing would have looked like because you did have a really promising core players. You did kind of waste three years here And derek carr was up for another contract after just ending an exceptionally affordable. Wonder coming closer. One so i feel like there is definitely a gigantic opportunity. Missed here in general and you have to wonder how hill reevaluate his own hiring processes if at all To make sure that you can still capitalize on on the window here connor. You make a good point in that mark davis's entire direction after his father. Al died was to bring jon. Gruden back to the raiders. He was so focused on it. Even when they had other coaches like jack del rio he would always say. Oh if i can get john. I'm going to bring him back. So that has been his entire northstar for this franchise. Everything depended on him bringing gruden back. So now what is his plan. And how does he recalibrate. And when you think about the fact. That mark davis was so obsessed with jon. Gruden leaving it to the raiders organization to discipline. Him probably wasn't going to make sense. I mean we're talking a lot about now. When did the raiders have the emails. When did they know the contents. Did they allow him to coach on sunday. Doing everything and i think a lot of this comes back to the fact. That mark davis probably is in the person who was going to hold jon gruden accountable yet me never seeing that he. I mean the press conference. The introductory press conference was one of the one of the things that i'd ever seen in my life. It was like if a celebrity was. Like if i knew that lady gaga was coming to my house for dinner I would. I would try to do something really ornate but that was just so over the top because i would assume that that's what she would would want You know i don't know maybe lady gaga Quite dinner. I don't know but like it was just so over the top and like he made the whole thing. Just of just the highlight package in like the hype and everything surrounding. It was was so uncomfortable. And it's like you just watched how giddy he was during this entire thing. And and that's when. I think it became clear that like jon. Gruden was basically the owner of the raiders. At that point you know what i mean like you come in and that guy's never going to tell you know i mean you. You see the look on his face. You see all excited. He was I'm still amazed that he fired him to be honest. Or i guess like you know. Put him in a position where a confronted him to the fact that to the point where he decided to resignation was was appropriate I'm surprised that happens. Still to be honest but i think it's It's just a we all have these preconceived biases you know. I'm not You know certainly suggesting that. Nfl owners the only people who are entrenched in thinking in a certain way. But you know marks was jon. Gruden can fix this thing. And i think now You you have to wonder now. They've moved to vegas. The whole plan was built around this showy franchise with a with the television star head coach. You know what what is the plan. Here you know. 'cause there is no higher that can really match a perceived public public gravitas of of jon gruden But you know you know your quarterback maybe doesn't have the out outer star power. You traded away the other two guys that potentially could have had that star power. And so you know this is really going to be a a. I don't know. I mean he's going to be casting a wide net and but also trying.

You're you're very public figure. You do have to be aware of what you're putting out there Even to a small audience and number two. I think there's a a lot of thing where you can sort of say. Oh i you know. I i was upset and i was uttering things i mean. We know we do podcast. Sometimes you utter things and it doesn't come out quite right. I mean y when you're writing it's a little bit different. It's a little more a little more aware of what you're doing at that point and look. He's taking his medicine. He lost his job. He probably won't work again but I'm not quite sure how you can possibly justify This as some sort of the jon gruden being victimized in some way. Yeah gary i think they're written and they also were sent over a seven-year period. And the way the times characterized. The emails was that he casually and frequently engaged in this language. So it seems as though it's a pretty large sample size. I think the other important thing to remember is that we are getting a view. A rare view into how powerful men in the nfl speak behind closed doors and regardless of who the intendant intended recipient of these emails. Was you know. Even you know his expectation that these were private. Communications not meant to be made public. But he's engaging in hate speech that certainly calls into question his ability to lead. Nfl locker room in a league. That seventy percent black. He has an openly gay player on its roster. His organization has both men and women in it. So i think what we've seen from those emails. His own words certainly disqualified him from being in a position where he was leaving a franchise. I think this gets to the heart of the complaints that a lot of people have You know thinking about the coach hiring process for example right. Where if you look at. So this is just a casual chap between bruce allen and jon gruden but roussel is a guy who is a hiring position and you know is in a lot of these meetings and deals with the hiring of coaches jon gruden at the time with someone who is certainly consulted for his thoughts on head coaches over time or players were different scouts or whatever it is. I mean he's still part of the nfl infrastructure and so when the conversations behind closed doors have this kind of general tone to it. I think that this sort of really depicts well. The frustrations the confusion The anger from groups like minority coaching candidates. Where it's like okay This is how my boss talks. You know this is how my bosses friends talk. And so when i go into meeting with these people You know is what i'm hearing. Just lip service you know. Do they talk like that. When i'm not around is the reason. I didn't get the job because they secretly feel this way. And i feel like that to your point. Jenny is is really a valuable window right. It shows people kind of how these conversations go the the tone that they take and that we kind of have a reason to be vigilant about The way that The way that people talk and you know and and be on guard about Some of this stuff. And so. I don't know i. I thought that you know when i saw those things. That was the first thing i thought of. Was you know. Other coaches at the raiders have interviewed in the past Other coaches that dealt with bruce allen in the past. And what were they thinking about when they left those interviews. And what do they think about it now. Reading those words you can see why there are things like an investigation into the workplace conduct at washington. You see why there have been hurdles for inclusion for people in the queer community or women or groups that are different. From what people in the nfl the predominant group is which is white men. I couldn't help but notice during the monday night game and also right after. Espn and on their halftime report on rooms resignation. One of the commercials. That played was the out. Football is for everybody. It was probably not playing that way but it was a little reminder there that yes in some ways. Football is for everybody and it is becoming more inclusive. But we kind of have this. I don't know just just as this old disease that still needs to be stamped out permanently because even if you don't see it front facing It's still there. And i think this was a reminder that it is still there in it's weird because if you're the nfl roger goodell you can put every- ernest foot forward in every ounce of effort into creating an inclusive environment which vile council does seem like. There is an effort in that direction to do. But until you're willing to directly confront the source of the systemic issue. It's like all this money and all these hires. All these initiatives are gonna fall on deaf years because the people that own the thirty two teams. you know. Still feeler thinker actor. Talk this way and it's like it's the most self defeating behavior. I think i've ever seen and you know i noticed that commercial too. And that's you know that's what popped into my head was like well like there was probably some marketing group. That was brought in here and he spent money on this. And you ask people how this would make them feel in all along you know that you know their owners that just don't care about this or you know you have. You're sitting on all these emails. You know of people who were talking this way and so it's it's it's very It's a it's a very like. I just said like kind of a self defeating behavior for them because i do think the people who are putting forth the earnest effort to create inclusive environment or ultimately going to be defeated If none.

Jon Gruden Resigns as Raiders Coach Over Decade-Old Offensive Emails

"John Gruden has always been kind of a wild child in the NFL always been a little bit of a loose cannon, if you will. And I believe he was also he was also the coach of the Oakland Raiders in like the 90s. And then he went to the Buccaneers and led them to the Super Bowl very complicated. But then he rejoined the Raiders in 2018 after he was an analyst on Monday Night Football. Do you remember those things he used to sit down with the quarterbacks? And it was like Gruden's corner. I've never been a big fan of Jon Gruden. I'll be very honest. One in 2002, that's right, my memory's not too bad. I'm not going to be an apologist for Jon Gruden. Okay? I'm sure he lives a complicated life like most people in the NFL. But this recent saga involving in his resignation slash termination is disgusting. And the national Football Association is in many different ways. In enterprise that is built on a House of Cards. The entire structure of how many of the teams are filed as nonprofits on how almost every stadium is built thanks to taxpayer dollars. There's a lot of corruption that exists in the national football, the National Football League. And so it came out a couple days ago that John Gruden is going to be fired, or it has to speak out for his racist and homophobic emails over ten years ago. And I shrugged my shoulders and I actually didn't know where this one was going to go. Because John Gruden signed a ten year 100 million dollar deal with the Oakland Raiders. And now so he technically resigned whatever he says, I have resigned as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. I love the Raiders and do not want to be distraction. Thank you to all the players coaches and staff and fan fans of raider nation. I'm sorry I never meant to hurt anyone, John Gruden. And so it was revealed in some of these emails. And based from what I've said, seen should have said something's probably not no, was he joking around in private in a context that none of us can understand? Yes. He incited Joe Biden, insulted Joe Biden I can't even say what he called Joe Biden on air. It's kind of hilarious. Called Roger Goodell, a certain name. I'm no fan of Roger Goodell. So if this whole thing is like a Roger Goodell, apology tour, but here's what really matters. Here's the question. In the National Football League, do they ever allow people to do bad things and continue to participate? Like murder. How about rate Ray Lewis and his legacy of the unsolved double murder? Or how about you remember this one? You remember ray rice, who literally punched his fiance in an elevator? It was an elevator, right? Which gained total notoriety following the indictment he was released by the ravens and suspended, and now rice would be reinstated after he successfully appealed the league's decision. And this whole thing with John Gruden is this question of should you be judged by things you have said in private ten years ago to destroy your current

"It's hard when you're not held accountable for it doesn't it doesn't really make sense. It doesn't make sense if nobody ever says. Hey you're wrong. You're going to pay this punishment or you're going to have to you. Know take whatever the crime you know the time for the crime whenever you want to look at it. How how are you going to get better. How are you going to grow of. No one ever says you're wrong. If no one ever hold you a cowboy of no one ever says hey how you feel. There's an okay how you what what you're saying right now is not okay. We're not gonna let it slide. How can it change. How can you get better from that. Especially a forty eight especially at fifty fifty five. They come on. Does you know sound right. Does he make sense what you're saying when you say it out loud it doesn't even make sense when talking about a ten year old here. That's about eight old. You know we're not talking about a twelve year old. We're talking about a grown ass. Man has been through a whole lot of shit as been to a whole better on a whole lot of people even just even just put that an email as stupid as it is like all everything else aside is dumb doing. Don't make sense. He just says a lot about your character like even put that in writing and say that. Like how stupid can you really honestly be. Does he make sense in that regard. So that's it that's it. That's all. I gotta say jon gruden which do was wrong. You're paying for it. You're gonna continue to pay for it and the only thing that i do. Sit here on this podcast. Sitting on twitter is continue the conversation that you don't wanna talk about that that that's the only way i can hold you accountable. The world sees it. The world knows what she said. I know you wanna say the past is the past you messed up and i know a lot of a lot of a lot of people look at it that way. A lot of people look at life that way it was ten years ago a is unchanged he's is a differ man. He doesn't treat me like that. I hear you. I hear you. But he never was held accountable for that though and he's going to be and the conversation will continue and more people need to be held accountable because this is still if it still feels super picker. Choose on people people. People don't hold people accountable when their friend when they're buddy when a when a work with them or bill would them. They don't hold them accountable out of time they want you know sh keep quiet. They keep quiet. You'll you'll even see this now on twitter on social media on podcast. There will be someone who did this exact thing or something very similar. This and some people won't talk about it and then they'll come out and talk about jon gruden. No like that doesn't that doesn't help. Everyone has to be held accountable. I know everyone's not perfect..

"I don't get homophobic. i don't need to grow. I don't need to age out need do none of. That's just not who. I am and the fact that it took all of this to get him to resign. He resigned straight after the racist comment. He didn't we didn't need to go any further than that. That was enough to be embarrassed. You know hold yourself accountable. If you're apologetic then leave. That's just the way that's how i look at it and you know it's just a it's an issue that we're facing as a people. It's not just in sports not just in the nfl. It's not just nfl locker rooms. This is just problem overall So jon gruden did the right thing. By leaving the raiders. Were going to do the right thing by firing him if he didn't leave. I'm i'm sure of that. I'm very positive of that We'll talk about other things that transpire from this after this Again players that follow up you know and talk about it coaches the nfl Anything that there is to continue following this will we will do that. if you're looking strictly for the raiders side of it the follow for that. I have a podcast call. What happens in vegas. you could follow their But on here on clock daughters. I'll also be doing you know whatever updates. I can with the investigation if more people get Aired out that. We're doing these racist things. These homophobic things Let it be a constant reminder. Everybody if you have written something in your past on social media on emails on anything it doesn't matter if it's ten years ago or not you'll be held accountable in twenty twenty one and moving forward. You will not get to use an excuse like it was ten years ago. it was. But you're what you're gonna pay for it now. That's just the facts. It's just the facts and your best step is to apologize fully. Not just some words like put your apology into action certainly telling people you don't wanna talk about it. It's not an apology. That's not the way to proceed at funny enough. You'll be talking about it the rest of your life. jon gruden. You will answer to this. You will speak on this. You will be asked about this. People will be axed about you about these comments about these emails for the rest of your life so whether you feel like you don't wanna talk about it or not it will be spoken about and you will always be axed about it and whenever people see you they will see that you are your action. Unfortunately that's just the way it is. You know whether that's who you really are whether it was a mistake whether you've grown.

"About john again. So we'll see how you know their responses change after this. Let's not forget. These guys are actively employed by the raiders. They may not want to speak out there in the league. They may not want to get you know we've seen backlash on some players when they speak out as it's ugly it's not good. It's not fair But they may be concerned about that. You know they may be Not as vocal and some of these guys. You know maybe. Just don't feel the need to discuss it right now. But maybe they will in the off season or maybe. They will after their careers. We've seen a lot of guys who played in a league previously. They're the ones being the most outspoken currently We're not hearing a lot of guys in the nfl. Speak but to be fair. It hasn't just this all happened. So quickly So maybe we'll get more comments from players on the raiders And more across the league We'll we'll see as it transpires and we'll update as it transpires But you know we'll see. We'll see how they respond. Is you know everyone's allowed to have their own opinion. Of course I guess we'll wrap this conversation with the fact that jon gruden should have been fired or resigned. I agree with that jon. Gruden should be held accountable for what he said should apologize for what he said. It should not tell us when the conversation ends Jon gruden won't wasn't the first and won't be the last in life in sports in the nfl in this investigation. That had these issues. Let's be honest and you know just knowing what the climate is like in the world period. I'd assume that there's some level of this happening in probably not in email form because people are are smarter now and even if they're racist or homophobic they may not just put it in writing they might not share it But we know they're out there right These just exist. It is what it is right. We can't be can't get rid of him as much as we try to teach and educate and you know better people. They're still going to be people. Think in such a limited capacity Or as such a hateful capacity And we'll we'll we'll see how this goes forward again. I'm not here to say that every time. Someone makes a mistake while when their mistake is you know dug up from the past. They should be destroyed and never heard from again. But you are going to be held accountable. You are going to apologize and you will likely lose your current employment and it will likely be difficult for you to find employment in the future We we we've seen it work though for certain guys. I mean we have seen people come back from these things and you should be allowed to redeem yourself. just know that people who want supported you and didn't know you were this kind of character i will not support you before and more than likely Because there's some people who i mean. No one has to forgive. You know one has to accept. You know one has to do anything so you know he'll have his supporters have people who don't have people who forgive you could feel however you wanna feel towards jon gruden but just understand too that this is a bigger issue that more and more information will follow and should follow than just jon gruden and then more people do things like this than they should. When i get mad. I don't get racist when i get mad..

"A perfect life has everything they've ever done. They've been only proud of. We've all been you know. Done things had poor judgment and and have done things that we weren't you know the proudest of however making racist comments. I can't say we've all been there my man. That's that's definitely unique to a select group of people making homophobic comments again. Unique to assessing certain people as some people may say. Oh well you know as locker room talk is how people talk with their friends when when people talk like that when people try to use that. Excuse number one. It's an excuse and still you still did it. But he he's using this in this email as a negative context. He's not he's he's putting in right in in a negative context. It's not like you. You used a word that is now found upon and you use the back in a different context. He's using it in a hateful manner. He's not just using the word he's using these words hatefully with anger. So that that's the part where becomes even more racist or homophobic or whatever it is when you when you're slinging these words around in a negative connotation towards people it's it's meant to hurt meant to inflict you know pain or anger or whatever you're trying to do to somebody so we're not gonna play that game where you know. It doesn't matter or It was so long ago. And this and that you're going to be held accountable for it. You're going to apologize for it. I'm not. I've been on record with this in the past. I'm not you know this word. I guess us around cancelled culture and that kind of stuff. I'm not a fan of it. People do make mistakes. People's lives shouldn't be ruined for the mistakes. However you're any job and you lose your job because of it. That's that's how this works is not cancelled culture. That jon gruden lost his job. That's not cancel culture. That's him being held accountable for what he did. That's how life works. You say something. do you fired. Will he ever get another chance again. Who knows who knows. We'll we'll we'll see how he responds. We'll see how he tries to you. Know move forward. We'll see how others feel about it. We'll see if anything else comes out to the light but he's not cancelled for life. He's not you know he. He lost his job. That's what happens when you do things wrong when you do something bad. "Matt Walsh from the daily wire Welcome back to the show Thanks for taking the time with us today We appreciate it Hey Dan thanks for having me Yeah you got it So Matt this situation with Jon Gruden the Las Vegas Raiders coach You know is this the new standard You're one of the best commentators out there on the ongoing culture war against us which we didn't ask for by the way I mean is this the new standard you send an email ten years ago with some crappy language in it I mean really if all of us had our emails from the last ten years disclosed publicly I mean we'd all be fired and part two of the question if I may You know they have a M and M Matt performing at the halftime of the Super Bowl show What do you think his emails Yeah Eminem we don't have to look at his emails and we just look at the lyrics that a song these performed for the public and millions of dollars and same for Dr. Dre snoop dog they're all performing And they're going to perform some of those very songs where they use the language that John Gruden just got fired for using And that's why I agree with you I mean look any of the people who are pretending to be offended by John Green's email I would encourage any of them I challenge any of them to just publish their Gmail password and let us comb through it We'll keep it in your loan go back farther than that I promise But let us look through ten years of messages and give us your text messages to have you never in ten years said one message send one message with a content Of course that's not the case And that's why we have to understand what's happening here with Jon Gruden This is prosecuting by mob tribunal a thought crime This is the problem is the thought that he express it's almost no different Like if the canceled mom I've had the ability the technology to actually literally read your mind They would eagerly do it and they would cancel you for things you haven't even said out loud There's only one step removed from that and canceling someone for a private email sent from their private email account to a friend who was not offended by it I mean it's the definition of a victimless

'Woke' Media Fails to Ask NBA Coach About China

"Com. Josh cross how are you and NBA fan? Somewhat. I mean, I kind of lost interest in the NBA when wizards don't make the playoffs at all. But yeah, I follow the NBA. I like basketball. Say you know, Popovich is allegedly this brilliant guy. He's very good basketball coach, but yesterday, Gruden gets fired from misogynistic homophobic emails and Popovich compares Columbus to Hitler and doesn't get asked a question about the genocide in China and the Uyghurs in his complicity in that. What's wrong with the NBA sports media? Well, not just the sports media, it's the leadership of the NBA, which I think they've suffered the most of all the four sports leagues because they got the most political, all the leaks of some extent have gotten more political than they once were, but the NBA really just like, I remember during the bubble season they put Black Lives Matter on the court. They let players offer their political takes on things left and right. And that's not a great place to be. We want one of the top roles of building a good team and effective team is that you're not divided by politics. You're one team and you don't talk about these issues that have nothing to do with the MBA. Popovich has a long history of offering his political takes. This becomes a no surprise to me that he says something like that. Well, I don't mind is giving his hot political takes, but if he's gonna give it take on Hitler, genocide, slavery in Columbus, somebody ought to ask him about the Uighurs and the ongoing genocide in China from which he profits yes and so much of sorry, someone should ask the silver and someone should ask a lot of the players who play in China, you know, what they think about that. Not so much more relevant, timely issue for the NBA, at least, but you're right, that there's sort of a double standard and you don't get the type of scrutiny. You're going to open everything up to politics. You might as well should be talking about issues that directly affect the NBA and the bottom line. And if you're going to hijack if you're going to hijack a basketball press conference to rant about Hitler in Columbus, you're going to get asked to China question if you have a real

"Were here this week to talk about our thoughts on the las vegas raiders. Adam you were out at the facility. Today we're taping this on friday and you talk to jon gruden by the game coming up sunday against the bears and allegiance stadium but soon after that news broke from the wall street journal about an email coach gruden wrote in two thousand eleven Reference to demaria smith the nhl players union chief in it said Some racially insensitive language. I'm sure people by now listening this as heard of what happened. called him deborrah smith dumberer smith and had lips the size of michelin tires that coach gruden was quoted in an email to bruce allin then head coach the washing football team. There's a lot to unpack your. So i want to start with you on just your first reaction when you heard this because this did happen or the story did break after tacos coach gruden. I think that's an important part of their Jon gruden was on the podium today. And i think a lot of people are saying why was he asked about. The wall street journal released the story as jon. Gruden was leaving the media room at facility which i don't know if that is in agreement that they made with the raiders that hey let's hold off on there or if the washington journal was maybe doing something smart and saying you know. We don't want them to be able to ask about this. We wanna kinda get statement for of our own Based on this. I'm not sure but To be clear the story was not out When john hooters on the podium at the facility the other part of this that i think a lot of people have been reacting to is. Why now why did this come out. Now it was ten years ago that the email was sent. So why are we just hearing about it and the answer to that is actually fairly easy. the washington football. As you mentioned. There was the bruce allen who was working for the redskins at the time now known as the washington. Football team This email was sent during the lockout with the nfl. The washington football team recently conducted an internal investigation about Their workplace and you know how topic workplace was and that sort of thing in this email was discovered as part of that investigation so That's why after ten years is something out Really no other. You know factors involved. There just happens to be you know as all these emails research through one of the things that they found. And we'll see what comes out after this Immediate reaction is okay. What else is there. I think that's the first thing you always think of. Because when something like this happen it could completely be an isolated incident. Nothing never happened And this is just a massive massive mistake by jon gruden and that's certainly possible but i think the first thing you start to think of is okay now that this is out there will people you know. Come out from all different areas. They i heard this. And i you know i was dealing with jon gruden and i heard this. Are those things possible absolutely. I think that's something to look for in the next couple of days. You know what else comes out from this if anything And then how is it handled and you know whether it be by the league by the team again jon. Gruden wasn't with the raiders. This time he was actually. Espn at the time The league still discipline him. The leak to kind of talk. The raiders disciplining. Maybe the raiders make their own decisions in disciplining them. I don't think a lot of people right away where they go. He's fired. i don't think he's getting fired. I don't think he's losing his job. i do think there may be suspension. coming in a game or two or something along those lines Maybe a fine of some sort and with the How this is handled going forward for me of megan a team perspective but there's just so many layers in so many things that come out of this story You feel like you certainly get the feeling that it's only well. Let me ask you this. Because i think both in you and i believe at its core it is a fireball fence. Now saying that goes a long way from Saying that mark davis actually firing a guy who he brought back and kind of glorious fashion with a reported ten year deal for one hundred million dollars. He loves jon gruden and he is said in the past. Whether it's like a brother he loves him loved him when he was there before. So i don't think he's getting fired either but i also think this is really serious. Fans won't a majority of fans won't think that the wanna know how you beat the bears on sunday. I get that but another point on a talk about is. I'm going to try to write about this for tomorrow. For saturday's paper is what are the odds. And the chances there's thirty six black players on the fifty three man roster right now for the raiders that in some sense he has or will lose the locker room. Yeah i mean. I think it's a tremendous mushin and again. He said he spoke to the team today. And they've dealt with it internally that you know that's something that's on has told us Because again we we were able to talk on good. It's not on the podium publicly. It was more of a private conversation. You're not trying to come and take him but the conversation in individual conversation more than a group conversation on the podium. So jon gruden said he's supposed to even currently they're dealing with it He also and i think one of the big factors in how this goes usually is how it's handled. And i will say like with everybody can have an opinion then and you know in this case my opinion would be He's not handling it overly well I don't think the you know you. You mentioned the comments. And i won't say them again. I'll repeat them. But i don't think the hey i just call everyone. Rubber lips a liar. Well like how does that get to giant lips and know the trophy so To me and you know he did say you know. I'm sorry for the words and unacceptable but to come up with those kind of excuse that feels like an urban meyer you know. She was dragging on the dan for by saying and then when other things come out now all of a sudden that looks like a philly you We'll stay in again. Maybe that's true about brunei. I will say that. I've been looking for anywhere where rubber lips is a you know as a slang term for liar. You've on twitter. They've heard it. I haven't I don't know it's just it's a very convoluted and complicated situation but In terms of the the job security and you know we both had like. I don't think mark davis decided to fire them for this. There is one caveat to that and you mentioned it. It's the contract right. A lot of people have that. I've said on this show. I don't think jon gruden ever gets fired from the raider. And the reason is his contract. He you know he's owed all this money sixty million dollars this contract with the raider which goes for another six-year. The only thing. I could see happening in terms of maybe losing a job is if mark davis has been looking for a way to get out of that contract. He's got it this is it. This is the way You can't fire them for performance in that case you'd have to pay them but i think there's a chance you can get out of that contract you this and you know. Does he want to get rid of them. I don't think so. I think they believe they have the best thing they've had. I think he believes there are a playoff team. And i don't think they wanna mess with that. But if mark davis asthma looking for a way to get out of it we have no reason. Indicate that is true. But it's just one of those things that is always we always have in the back of your mind. You know if they wanna way out of that contract they have found it. Yeah i i agree with that. I don't think it's gonna happen. I gotta be honest. I've always questioned ten years for one hundred million dollars anyway. It's always just been reported that way. I don't know how many people if any actually you know saw that written that it was actually that contract. But you're right if if he wants out of it. This is the best way to get out of it. I and a friend of ours tweeted this earlier. And i totally agree with it. I i raise my is in a bit of skepticism. When i see the quote. I don't have a racist bone in my body. It's it's become cliche to me. And i don't know how you feel about this. I would prefer him just apologize. Say whatever he wants to say he didn't mean to do it. He didn't you know whatever whatever he wants to say. I hear these things. And i just i cringe at. I don't have a racist bone in my body. And i haven't had one. He said for fifty eight years. He's a fifty eight year old guy. What are your thoughts on that society. It's almost like i wanna yell at him. Don't say that don't say that because that no one's i mean most people i'm not going to say no because like i said fans at this point or just like hey how are you going to beat the bears but a lot of people looked at this differently are going to say you know you say that and the first thing you.

"Derek Carr passed for three hundred eighty two yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Las Vegas raiders beat the Pittsburgh Steelers twenty six to seventeen car second touchdown came on a third and ten with under ten minutes to play as he found Henry Ruggs for a sixty one yard bomb can be so fast speed kills and that's one of the advantages of his speech showing up to where he could get open like that so fast and so quick the the bliss you know they didn't even know really I mean it got there but I had time to throw rugs hauled in five passes for one hundred thirteen yards and the score Jon Gruden's raiders are now two went out for the Steelers Ben Roethlisberger pass for two hundred ninety five yards a touchdown and to pick Dante Johnson hauled in nine passes for one hundred five yards Pittsburgh's now one and one Josh Rowntree Pittsburgh

"All right. Big news involving the raiders. Jon gruden announced running back. Josh jacobs out for the game against dealers. Not that big of a shock okay. He's got a toe injury. It could linger. You need to make sure this is okay and take care of it kenyan. Drake was signed for this reason. And i mean drake is going to have to go up against this incredibly tough defense. I wonder is the number going to jump. maybe not. it's six and a half already. It's still six and a half and now now it's it's jus to the steelers now it's one fourteen at fan duel. "His power in speed are history. Yeah i mean they're they're you know when as you were saying that i was thinking of my favorite. Nba player is quite leonard. Kawhi leonard shoots at a very high percentage but it's a very flat shot but somehow it always goes in you know it's not the perfect yet. L. elevations on the stroke. It's a little bit flat but it just never seems to miss We're obviously talking about jay gruden so through two games clearly. The surprise so far about this team has been the two subpar defensive performances house. Surprised her you at that. And what do you think the issues are others. You know i. I don't know that's something you have to dissect with the coaches. I still think they're going to be a top notch defense when it's all said and done the edge russia's that they have We'll be problematic for defense. Moving forward With chase young and obviously sweating and pain down in the middle or still saw in that regard. I think there are some things in the secondary they pray gotta clean up But i still think playing The chargers week one. I think nobody has really given enough credit. The justin herbert is an outstanding quarterback and allen and that group off the player that they have that. They're going to be a problem for a lot of team. So i i. I shot back up and they still did pretty well against them. That after best performance Not terrible and then last week last night i think was a little bit disappointing. I think amount of yards. They gave up to the giant team struggled last week. I think that might be a concern. It is still early. There's fifteen games for these guys. I still think they're a top notch. Defense they gotta clean some things up and coverage and.

"Post office again joining us now on the podcast for the second time he joined us. I don't know six months ago or so The head coach of the washington football team jay gruden. And you know thinking about you and having you on the show today on a friday following thursday night national game. So i figured you would watch it because you're not watching every game at the same time on sundays which i have a feeling you might be doing but i will ask you here momentarily. What how. You're spending your sundays now. But i'm assuming you did watch the game last night so from a coach's perspective if somebody and let's call that somebody another coach that really knows football called you up this morning and said what happened in the game last night. Tell me what happened in the game. Gimme a few minutes on the game. How would you describe it. I'd say what. I think First of all washington's quarterback play his butt off for not having a lot of training camp. I can say minner take gentlemen defeated. I think back and forth and you'll jones at the with the greatness in that game. He looks like he's getting better and better as the weeks. Go by so what everybody thought was going to be. A defensive battle actually turned up pretty good offense of football and of course in a heated rivalry game comes down to a player to at the end of the game and it was this beautiful but it was an offsides and they feel game over so Very exciting to watch surprising to watch without much of the fireworks. There were but a great team at at is washington football.

"So from the outside jon. Gruden can seem almost cartoonish at times. We've seen him putting on quite the show and hard knocks for example. Everybody right now has dreams. Don't take guys right everybody. Nfl dream of making any nfl. I got a dream of winning the bowl. I got a dream of being in a pro. I'm really not into dreams anymore okay. I'm into nightmares. You gotta end some that. Vicky cover the seam up close. What did the players say. Gruden is like behind closed doors. The things we're optimistic is always looking ahead kind of pump them up a little bit. He's very funny so uses that both the to kind of courage him and also to kind of knock him down to peggy. Who wants to get bigger point across. The energy is off the charts. He's like here early the morning. He's nonstop he wants to as you. I was players. They kind of feed off of that and and time during waller. I thought i had a good point. Because you're the giants a huge playbook bushes these guys and different ways and they responded waller definitely you can see. He's one of the best players in the league now and yet he has gotten better every year under john. He's definitely credits. John lott with his progress. What has car had to say about his relationship with his head coach or you long says they semi two texts all day and they like show pictures of their dogs and the kids and it's been cool by which i think is probably partly true should take both a little bit. I think you know. John can be tough at times and john's even said that dirksen good job of like dealing with his craziness like john. Netflix emits he's kind of maniacal times can kind of fly off the handle on a huge emotional ranges. I think it's a good job of learning how to deal with that. And not take things personally and just kind of realize you're working towards the same goal so either good well as we've discussed jon gruden hasn't actually one. That many games has the raiders head coach this time around and for a franchise with the motto. Just win baby. That would put his job under threat but vic as he wrote gruden is not on the hot seat yet because of that ten year contract he signed back in two thousand eighteen so with all that in mind do you think gruden's feeling real pressure to put up someone's this season or does he feel like he's still got time to build this team into a contender recuse. Time is not as you're getting fired anytime soon. I could see at some point him just like you know what it's not worth i'm miserable. I'm putting all his energy into it. I'm not having fun. Like i thought it would. And so i could see him walking away and a couple of years. They can't get over the hump. But i don't think he's danger again fired. I mentioned mark davis. When he gave him the highland. He said it was the happiest day of his life so he gave. He gave a guy. You know harmless dollars. And he's like happy. Which tells you how much you love. Jon gruden your win. A sony has the pay much every year last year. Was coordinator paul. The mike joe mic. Mac might be on the hot seat or even. Even derek falter the playoffs. They could extensions the fall guy like john. John will be here at least a year to match. Thank you so much vicar. Taking the time to speak with us. "I'm gonna get into this interview. I had with louis riddick. We've talked about all angles of the monday night. Football game against the baltimore ravens. So let's get that going right now you so much for joining me today. Really appreciate the time. We've got a huge game coming up. Here raiders ravens. Big monday night. Football game percival. How excited are you to call this one as a former raider all every raider game is big for me. You know i don't really hide. I don't really hide from it. I kind of run towards the fact that. I've got such a special place in my heart for the raiders that's where my first arbour's board etc. I won't bore you with that. We're not all say is this though To get back out here after last year being out there in column buttons that week two against the saints at no fans to go back out here opening weekend against against the ravens one of the most exciting teams in the nfl for vegas start off their year playing them on monday night with fans opening weekend we saw one opening weekend was like for college. Football at you think is going to be for the nfl. Everything's gonna be vegas. I mean it's one it's vegas to. It's the raiders will most emotional fan bases in the nfl and for us on monday night. Football yeah that doesn't get any bigger than that. I'm sure you'll hear. My voice will be pretty quick pretty loud pretty fast. It's going to be have to calm myself down. But yeah i can't wait. I can't wait to hit the ground running for sure as somebody that has been coached under. Jon gruden how much do you feel like. A lot of people have talked about this test that he needs to pass this year by as far as getting through the playoffs and all of that are to the playoffs. Excuse me when you put that into perspective. Like how much is the focus on. What comes out of gruden this year when you start with game. One here the ravens. I think i think it's a. It's a big big factor. I think it's justified that there's a lot of attention being paid to the improvement that this team needs to

"So eighteen for years next. Three hundred gruden five total one three and one five toll thing not not a car. So they're going to have to figure that out. There is gonna aaron rodgers. Talk is done for this year. He's going to be in green bay. Does it happen next year. We'll worry about that next year. One interesting thing though is that they're saying that now devante atoms may be more willing to sign a long term deal with the packers in the course of ladders a lot of hope and speculation. That he'll end up being raiders. Still a long way to go to that. But you know we'll see we'll keep you up 'cause that's what we do. We stay on top of things you know. I wrote something last week. Fred warn warner excuse. me number. Seventy pick in two thousand eighteen. Got a monster deal from the forty niners linebacker. He was picked five picks after brandon. Park of the raiders traded up to get brandon. Parker parker said that day i was in the media room that he thought that he go in the fifth round. Pj hallway cigarettes. Tuesday thing house will no longer raider. Parker may get cut so a lot of people. I write it and you know people. Love defending the raiders. And that's fine but let's look at track record to track. Rutgers are relevant and the raiders. Need linebacker stud linebacker. Yes a lot of people. Bypassed warner but jon gruden got used that as a as a miami. Wasn't there yet. it was two thousand. Eighteen came next year at some point. He's going to have to find his own. Fred warner and stopped making reaches so. I thought that was a fair story. So yeah so just something. He needs to find his advance. Think they're going to go the playoffs data poll seventy percent think. They're going to go to the playoffs. Hey we'll see we'll see. Come on mike mayock. You know we do here. We talk about the news and notes of the week and we want to make you the smartest raider fans in the nation. I gave you the tidbits that you can't always be around because you have a job. This is my job mayock worse. Gm in the nfl. I that's that's where a you know. A ranking off see. I'm so glad he's off. Season rankings are almost over I think nbc sports daily twenty six active returning. Gm's 'cause they're six. That are starting their damning graded work it you know. I don't know if he's the worst in the league. That might be a little harsh. But if he's gonna get clapped for being the worst. Gm we. Jon gruden has to share some of it because gruden's leading the shell right so they're either going to do it together. They're gonna fail together. That simple is at grund. Today's the entire coaching staff is vaccinated. only four or five players aren't jalen rashard. Put out a tweet last week. That suggested that he's not high on vaccine. I don't know if he is vaccinated but that he put you know the rules really time for players who are not vaccinated in derek carr told victory over the athletic. Hey look at you know. I can give you my opinion. But i'm not gonna push anybody to it so it sounds like derek carr is. There seems to be advantages for people were vaccinated so it seems like the car is one of the vaccinated players. I feel the same way in personal life. I'll tell you i'm vaccinated. That doesn't mean that. I'm gonna push anybody else it's all everybody's personal he hit for being vaccines say screw. You mind your own business in that person's rights divisive. They us needed vaccine. It's everybody's business but in the nfl world it's a lot easier to vaccinated. So that's his players are going to have to consider all draft catcher sign. Everybody signed everybody's. Good with the raiders. Which is nice. United sound from doing something tomorrow. On fifth year option guys. This is a big year for fairly neighbor jacobs. If he stays healthy he's gonna get the he's going to get the optional he might just get extended like miller did before the ox. The option of i think i think it's fifty fifty on farrow a neighbor..

Las Vegas Raiders Draft Alex Leatherwood

"It's heidi here with sam gordon and we're gonna get into what happened. Here with the raiders at number seventeen in the nfl draft. Sam alex leatherwood offensive linemen from alabama selected. Seventeen for the. Las vegas raiders. What was your initial reaction. Because i know heidi first and foremost great to be here. I had a great time in cleveland. So far it's been a heck of an experience. Glad you're here With said In terms of your question definitely surprised right definitely surprised Not surprising right tackle. i Continued to voice leading up to the draft. I thought right tackle away to go was an obvious. Need in the offense of line of ministry of this team despite its it's consistent struggles. Last year's the offensive line was a pretty reliable unit and lot of turnover tram. Browns gone just going to be some reshuffling move out gave jackson you move out and you knew there was going to have to be some adjustments made and there was a glaring hole the right tackle and they went with right tackle so i they feel the need but just now player. I thought they'd fill that need with and you look at how the board was shaking out. Thought christian dare saw. I was going to be big especially considering what his grade was. And and and where. The raiders were picking. He wasn't now that said just because alex leatherwood is a surprise and we didn't expect him to be there doesn't mean he won't be a good player but it feels like more often than not the raiders. Under jon gruden. Mike mayock have reached for players that they could have gotten later and are maximizing the value of their first round picks damon are net in twenty twenty was a good example. That and even cleveland farrell. Who's a very good player by the way in the top five and twenty nineteen so a couple so with that in mind. I think alex leatherwood at trend. But the jury's still out on how good he's going to be i think he has a lot of potential beauge player was an all american big-time film comes from a big time program and he's gonna get his opportunity to prove mike. Megan jon gruden ryan look. I want to be optimistic about this. But i think there were other guys that were on the board. That had a lot of potential. And the raiders did go out here and they went out on a limb

Bill Barnwell Breaks Down NFL Quarterback Moves

"So bill. We gave you do the math a whole month away from this podcast before our dependency bio chemically kicked back in so i just hope the last four weeks have been everything that you personally needed. Pablo got on many vacations. I turned around my life after six months of just staying watching football now. Bill barn wells weekly column on. Espn plus and he hosts the bill. Barnwell show podcast realistically. I have done something that few human beings have accomplished. I managed to get one pack of moments from nba. top shot. yeah. We share that same addiction. You are far deeper into the game than me. I realized over the weekend. I just want there to be an nfl top shot. Because i feel like that's going to happen right. It has to. i mean. Imagine the things you could do. You could send somebody that colts fake punt from years ago or or if you wanted to try some of your friends. Perhaps you could send the russell wilson interception from the nfl top shot to a certain person with the initials m used to host the show. Yeah just randomly picking in that example in those initials absolutely but bill. We dragged you back here. Speaking of a certain quarterback who threw a certain interception emotionally terrorized ours. Because this is an especially dramatic. Nfl offseason. they're all these big name. Quarterbacks who want out of these relationships that seemed from a distance at least pretty broken and russell wilson and the seahawks. I need to ask you about that. I because i know russ isn't feeling respected by head coach. Pete carroll reporting. I know that carol wants to revoke all of his cooking privileges. We've heard now. Russell wilson like storming out of meetings which is kind of funny to imagine like door very lightly slamming so this particular soap opera. What is all of it. Feel like to you much ado about nothing really. I mean i just i. Just don't buy russell wilson drama. I go back to his contract. Negotiations this is the same player in the same agent. Who wants imply that he would leave football in the middle of these negotiations entering the final year of his deal to try professional baseball. Where russell wilson once for the iraqis and the organization he hit to twenty eight in the low minors before returning to college football. It was not a realistic threat. But if that way does he want the seahawks to give him more helpful on the offensive line which has been sort of the crux of his public complaints. Yeah i do believe that. And i think that the seahawks could benefit from giving him more help. They relied on russell wilson to run his way out of sacks and free pressures from unblock players which has worked for that stretch buddies also taken a ton of hits cuss russell. Wilson plays the way he plays. He is going to take a ton of sacks regardless of how good his protection is the best way honestly pablo to get him. Hitless frequently would be to run the ball more. Which is the exact thing. Russell wilson was trying to get the seahawks do lasso last offseason. So there is something here but i very much doubt that leads to a trade. My favorite thing about this new cycle i think is that russell wilson has relayed via his wrapped. Adam schefter that he is not demanding a trade but if he were there are these four specific teams that he'd like to go to the bears. The cowboys the saints. The raiders does any of that make sense to you know not at all i mean the classic russell wilson tropez that ciara was going to pick teams him in new york in los angeles which this is the opposite that list even the teams he chose are so strange. Maybe you'd argue that. He chose teams with great offensive. Lions triumph of the seahawks. But the trade doesn't really add up the same. Stu have agreed offensive line. But they're like sixty five million dollars over the salary cap. The cowboys have a great line. Whenever everyone's healthy but they also have back prescott. that's not gonna work either the bears. I don't understand. They don't have a great line or any cap space. That one makes no sense to me on either. Level the raiders. Maybe are the most interesting and plausible candidate of the bunch with a great line and some cap space to work with. But when i think about jon. Gruden as raiders coach. He wants quarterbacks to do exactly what jon gruden wants on every single play. I don't think any if it really adds up to meaningful trae dialogue. I don't think there's going to be a conversation between the seahawks and another team about trying to make a trade for russell wilson work but this is twenty twenty one anything is possible

Right now where they have a really good thing going and they want to replace jimi g. since he's been injury prone i think you can get jimmy g. for cheaper than he's been whether he's caught you could sign up for cheaper free agent deal. He may want to go back to new england. Maybe bella jack doesn't want him but ryan pace eastern illinois guy also Fellow good-looking guy. Just like with trubisky could veer that way as well. So i'm going jimmy g. And as a close second maybe gruden gets rid of derek carr and the bears would trade for garrett car but those are my two if you force me to pick one. I'm going with jimmy garoppolo.

Are Raiders plotting to trade Derek Carr, pursue Deshaun Watson?

"According to a report out of las vegas. The raiders are taking calls on quarterback derek. Carr it's suggested in the report that it could potentially be the beginning of a three team trade to get to shawn watson in a raiders. Uniform shannon vegas. Try and trade for sean top. Five top seven quarterback. I think you should be in the running for watson. Skip there something that's been on my mind and the bother me last week. I called you the night before and told you that has some information about about jon. L. came on the show and they're about six thirty top of the show. I said to shawn watson my sources tell me shawn watson has ashby the texans for trade and this is not. This is just being broke but this could ask a couple of weeks ago now. Adam schefter reported twenty minutes out to me that show watson to ask for trade basically saying that he's breaking the news which at and i said what transpired that he wants to go to the jets. He have a fondness for robert solid. Everybody keeps saying jason this and that so what they're trying to do. They're trying to add egg pool pork to a hamburger. That i've already made is still a hamburger. Youth and economists tried to add to the story back to this absolutely skilled. I don't this report came from chris. Simms yes okay. What transpired skill. And you said this yesterday. When he was when he was talking to the press conference the player he said the player of the the new england syria away to new caserio said the player yes he must have realized how it sounded his head because he started saying shaw desha. It's too late. You everything off his thing and our to our for everything to my agent day google level but anyway skill yes they should skip. I just got always got the impression. That jon gruden wasn't as far the derek carr. I don't know what it is. I could be totally wrong but it. Just something about yeah. He's good but i don't really know if he can take me to where i need to go. I am making ten million dollars. The i do have one hundred dollar contract. And we haven't been to the play. So i'm as you can be viewed as a failure skill for thirty million dollars ain't got nothing to show for it. And there's a lot of have to do with his defense. They print his lands. Twenty fourth and thirtieth last three years are good bradley the off season he so you look at it. They're waller. it's a top three tight end. They got josh jacobs. Who made the pro bowl again. If i'm not mistaken hillary rodham. He nice receiving corps offensive. Line is solid. Yeah john was. It will be a major player for them. And in this offense again. It's the west coast system skip. It'd be foolish not to try

Thirty-two NFL Awards

"Every week on this podcast given out. Nfl awards app. The week is over. This could be a bit ambitious but thirty two teams thirty two awards. Let's go we're gonna call this one the best six and ten team of all time award but the washington football team stepped up so now he renamed it already way to change the word on the fly in the moment with breaking news the best seven and nine team of all time award the washington football team now can we say that definitively it may be too early to say last year tampa atlanta both went seventy nine. Those teams didn't even make the playoffs so the early lean is that washington could be the great one of all time. But we don't know yet. Speaking of that game. The clockwork orange award goes to the new york giants because they had to watch i at one point. This season banned myself from nfc east games. I said i wouldn't watch any until the teams are over five hundred. I watch step drop sixty two instead of being super locked into washington philadelphia. And i don't feel like i miss much. I know there's a lot of controversy would get that. Maybe a little bit later but imagine having your eyeballs taped open like clockwork orange and being a member of the giants having to watch that game. Nate sub-field now. Look we can sit here and be upset about it but you could have gone seven nine and got into the playoffs. So how sorry. Can you really feel for the giants the skeletons on the zahara award. Yes some of these awards. We referenced. his some won't get boy when you do get a weird one. You're gonna go man. I get that all right. That award goes to the. Las vegas raiders. Because at the beginning it looked promising. Nice little boat trip trade. Some spices await were crashing into rocks. Not a big deal here. Some locals gathering on the beach here to help nope now. We're marching to our own death in africa so it was very pro gruden. Hey maybe this gruden guy knows what he's doing and then you're like wait. Does this actually suck again. The drought continues. The raiders have not won a playoff game. Since two thousand to the notre dame award that goes to the green bay packers great record high green. Bay's really good. They're thirteen three though the one seat but nobody outside of their own fan base is rooting for this team. Not only because of the history of hatred. Although i imagine there's way more anti notre dame stuff out there than it is anti green bay but no one trusts you. Yes you're thirteen and three but that's three. Nfc conference championship game losses in the six seasons. A couple down years. They've turned this thing around. They are the one seed. But everybody's kind of overt already before. It's even started the parent's weekend award that goes to the new orleans saints. You guys know the deal parents weekend. There's a dad he wants to stay out with you guys. And he's older he's a little beat up and you're like i don't know like we're going to go out. We can't say no. We respect him too much. It doesn't look great. Doesn't make a ton of sense on paper there's some bad stats in there. But you have to let them do it. You have to let them try and the thing is is you and your buddies like there's no way does this is going to end well. The iceman award that goes to the dallas cowboys man and dangerous. What is with this jolt. A don't let us get hot. This is insanity when this was part of the story lines throughout the cowboys broadcast. Yes you on three in a row. Cincinnati san francisco and philadelphia yay. Then you lost the giants at home. You came in eleventh in the nfc but if you were to get in look out. This is now. It's our time you were eleventh in your own conference dangerous. You had sixteen games to prove that you're only dangerous to your fan. Base is or perhaps the understanding of what the word danger beans the g. league award san francisco forty niners. They had twenty eight players. At one point on i r or another injury cova list which was most in the league. They use the most. I are slots. They lost the most games to injury in the nfl. And even with losing record my coach. kyle shanahan. i can't believe how competitive they were. All season law the dabble award. That goes to kirk cousins in the vikings bike. He's gonna win. Nah no one really cares are one in five star people already over this team so their disappointing season was so disappointing so early that it was just all of a sudden just completely off the radar even though they turn some things around there a bit in the middle of the season with dalvin cook but watching cousins dance reminded me of daboh announcing his tiktok account hickory vickery dot mouse ran up the clock coast. Sweeney's got that drill and now he's on tiktok.

Blame Jon Gruden for the Raiders’ loss to the Dolphins... but do it for the right reason

"Raiders lost to miami. Las vegas raiders are now seven and eight. They missed the playoffs again. This year and the blame has got to go on. Jon gruden their head. Coach I i like jon gruden. I think there have been moments where he's done a good job preparing his team to play. I thought the highlight of the year for las vegas. Raiders was beating the kansas city chiefs. They looked very well prepared. That a great game plan But again this loss to miami coach. The recent failures by the raiders has to go on. Jon gruden you're gonna blame jon gruden for the loss. Make sure you do it for the right reason. So all the attention after this game has gone onto john. Gruden's late dame decision making against miami. Where the raiders had the ball first and goal on the eight yard line with a minute and fifty five seconds left. And the raiders chose to not score a touchdown they had. I mean they first of all they had the running back. Josh jacobs literally taking the other one yard line that he slid down to avoid scoring and did not want a touchdown would have given them a six point lead because they had they were down gas. Were down twenty four twenty five so they didn't want to have a six point lead. They wanted to take as much time off the clock as possible then on third and goal derek carr literally kneeled to continue to run the clock down and they kicked field goal. Giving them a twenty five to twenty three lead with nineteen seconds. Left in the game and people are critical. The strategy like you should have done other stuff. You should've taken the touchdown you should've done. Whatever coulda woulda should say whatever you want to say. I don't think this is the reason to criticize john. Gruden every once in a while you have a strategy. That is a good strategy. That simply doesn't work. I play video. What is it not a tabletop. Game like a board game called settlers of catan a giant nerd and my family. We all play during christmas. And i had a great strategy of putting my game pieces on the the number eight. Meaning that if you have to you have a high percentage chance of rolling in eight like you would think yeah. It's literally six and eight or two of the highest six eight and seven like the highest possible. Things could roll when you're rolling. Two dice and eighths just never got role but i waited and waited my whole strategy revolves around rolling eight with these two dice. And it didn't happen. And i don't know this the probability or whatever. I just know that on paper. That's a good strategy. Like eight gets rolled all the time and this game. It was an anomaly. It didn't happen and that happens sometimes every once in a while you good strategy that for one reason or another. There's an anomaly. And it doesn't work out
