Some money needed to be moved after rules were changed years ago to prevent teams from front loading contracts with the penalty kick in the

Pleasure to welcome you aboard. In this second hour. I started the show today by talking about the moves made by Joe Sakic and the latest one Darcy Temper the new goalie of the ABS. Connor Timmins draft picks going the other way to Arizona. I wanted to bring in someone that does a fantastic job covering the Colorado Avalanche for the athletic And get his take on everything is my pleasure to welcome onto the show. Peter Bomb the athletic Peter. Pleasure to have you aboard. Stand by Joseph was born Amman Okay, so we don't We don't have Peter by yet. Self Well, just let me know. And if you want to come by here to the Olympic Museum, love to have you Peter on the line. Yeah, I'm a listener earlier, so happy to do that as well. But As promised. I am joined by the Avalanche beat writer for the athletic. He is Peter. Bob Peter. It's a pleasure to talk to you and have you on Peter, the Hello. Oh, there you You hear me? Yeah, You're cutting out a bit, But, yeah. Okay, That's my fault outside, broadcasting live in in and that's the elements aren't completely conducive to that. But I was just walking you onto the show. Thanks for having me. Uh, so Um, let me backtrack a little bit before we really get into Darcy. Temper by the math that you did on the salary cap. Did you see a financial way for at least 2021? That Joe Sakic could have kept Philipp Grubauer and Gabriel and his dog with the Colorado Avalanche. Yeah, sure. He definitely could have done that. Um, but the fact of the matter was, but, um, he didn't want to pay as much as as Philipp Grubauer camp wanted, and they felt that they could get Um, a serviceable replacement and also have remaining cap space to make other depth signings, which you've seen them due to an extent and a sense and also retain enough cap space to maybe Make another signing or two coming up. So as you assess Philip Group power and what he was versus what they're getting in Darcy. Temper. Um, is this a step down? Is this a lateral move? How do you assess the move? Basically, the swamp from Grubauer to Darcy Kemper. Well, The hope is that Darcy Kemper behind a one of the best defensive units in the league, can can do what Philip Gruber did last year, and you'll also have problem Francis coming back from injury, just tactic that he expects him to be ready for next season. So I think the hope is that it would be a lateral move and and who knows? Maybe even slight upgrade. I think it's It's tough losing a guy like Philipp Grubauer, who knows the system has played while um, who's experienced who's been on a Stanley Cup winning team, But Darcy tempered the good goalie. He was top five investment trophy voting a few years ago. And, Yeah, he was solid this past season behind a bad Arizona team and also dealt with an injury. So I think if he's healthy of avalanche should be should be fine in that. I don't think it's significant. So then let me ask you, Peter Bob of the athletic, You said, maybe saved some money for some other signings. We've seen Brandon Saad, who I think a lot of as fans would have loved to see back in an app sweater, he goes to ST Louis. As you look out at what is left and what the ABS maybe looking for. What are the options? And where do you think Joe Sakic is looking with this? Some of this money that he has been able to open up? Yeah, well, there's not a ton of money left. There wasn't enough money clearly to keep thought that a term that the Avalanche felt comfortable with, but you saw today they picked up Darren Hounds who is a former Stanley Cup champion with the Detroit Red Wings. Great penalty killer. He can play in the fourth line. They picked him up for $1 million, and there's still some free agents out there like guys like Tyler Bozak of former Do you player? Maybe someone like Nick Ritchie on Boston. They're they're different players who are still available on the free agent market, but the ABS could pursue. Um With the remaining quite bit of cap space they have or they can hold on to that cap space and wait until they're in season and then maybe see how the league is shaping up and try and acquire someone be a trade. Peter Bob, the athletic my guess talking avalanche here on extra sports 1300 when The comments from Gabriel Land, It's God about his level of disappointment. Um Did you think That there was a chance that Gabriel Landeskog was not going to be a member of the Colorado Avalanche moving forward. There certainly was a chance. Yeah. I mean, I think Joseph excited yesterday. There were points where the camps weren't talking there. Are there periods of silence and I think there is there. Certainly frustration on Gabriel Landeskog side, which you saw the story I wrote where he said he was disappointed. He wished the deal got done, 10 or 11 months ago. Um, granted, I think both sides wanted to make this work and I think that Yep. Part of him wanted to leave the Colorado Avalanche, but he wanted to get a deal that he felt, uh Both showed a level of trust and appreciation and what he's done for the organization. And eventually the avalanche and him were able to get there. But you I mean, if you look at it, they Getting the deal cause they got the deal done about half an hour before they would have had they If they had waited half an hour longer..

"Match. Six years $6 million a year for Philip grew valid. And the feeling around the league. Is that the Avalanche? Opened up a huge hole in their team. Reaction to this isn't Oh, Joe Sakic should have paid Philipp Grubauer. Good. Read it. It's what are the abs going to do now in goals. And it's been a mixed reaction around the league. About the Colorado Avalanche requiring Darcy Camper whether they are better off and I would say that they can't be better off. There's no scenario here in what I just listed In which the avalanche made out on the plus side that they're in the black. They are not a better team today than they were 72 hours ago. Are they good enough to win the Central Division? Yes. Are they good enough to be Vegas? I mean, that's what you have to ask yourself. Because ST Louis, Winnipeg, Chicago. They're nothing. Their tune up. It's about meeting up with Vegas again and ensuring that the outcome is going to be different and are the abs better equipped To take down Vegas this time around than they were in the postseason in that second round. And I contend that they absolutely or not. I don't think that this can be the end. Joe Sakic has to have more. Because he has lost Way more this offseason, then he is gang. And you say, Well, you can't sign everybody. Tell that to Tampa Bay. Could the avalanche have afforded Philipp Grubauer and Gabriel Landeskog? For this season. They have to say goodbye to group our Don't believe so crunching the numbers myself. Peter Bob. The athletic will join me and I will pose that question to him. For 2021. That is bordering on Stanley Cup or but Could be avalanche have afforded the contracts of Philipp Grubauer and Gabriel Landeskog. I'm not talking about three years down the line. I'm not talking about plot. I'm talking about right now. Because when Joe Sakic Dave Gabriel Landeskog eight seasons. Eight more seasons in Denver, he said. In this particular case, I Want the benefit of the now more than the potential downside of three years from now, five years from now, eight years from now. And I agreed with him. Why draw the line at Gabriel Landis? God or I mean, why draw the line at Phillip grew ballots? Why sign Gabriel and his dog like he did, and white. No to Philip Group, Alan. The Avalanche are still a really good hockey team. There's still a team that's a shoo in for the playoffs, maybe for chewing for division title. And we're going to get Vegas in Colorado again. But I don't think that the Avalanche, as we currently said. Are better equipped to get past Vegas. What alone Take down an Islanders team or a lightning team or Boston. From the Stanley Cup finals. 5229872 will take your thoughts on the play Maverick Sports app wine. He again? Peter Bob. The athletic covers the Avalanche. He's going to join me 45 minutes from now. Just win the Broncos quarterback competition, and it has nothing to do with what happened on the.

"Right. If we're looking at the world without Philipp Grubauer, what's the best option corporate solos at the top of my list? This is a guy that is younger, so he could be a part of the core of the Colorado Avalanche with Nathan MacKinnon and with Kale Macara and Mikko Rantanen. But what do you think Columbus is going to ask for? And that's where I get back to Philipp Grubauer and say, Why didn't you just do this deal? Because now you're going to have to leverage some of your young assets or draft picks, and probably a lot of them to get Corpus Allah. You could have had Philipp Grubauer for just money. And trust me, it is just money. So of the plan B's Plan A was better. Philipp Grubauer in an APP sweater Best case scenario. I don't know where things went wrong. But I don't think they should have. He should have been a higher priority than Gabriel Landeskog. And now he's gone. And now the ABS are scrambling a little bit. But if we're going to move this story forward to say, Okay, Phillip Group hours gone, you know. Audio seize up in the Pacific Northwest. Where do they go from here? Korpisalo Best case scenario. Marc Andre Fleury. I would take it. Darcy Kemper. Buyer Beware. That's what I would say. And then the rest of the names that are thrown out are literally just throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks none of those names that I have seen. Um, you know, blow my skirt up. So I think that's the list and we'll see if the Arabs can get any one of them. And if it's Darcy camper, I'm telling you that I'm not going To be saying Oh, have made out, okay? But that tells you where the goalie market is. Or how about Carey Price? Or to cure. Ask Those names haven't really been thrown around. Probably should add them to the list. Bucharest is a high level goalie, but he's hurt until January. Carey Price if I want Seattle to take him It had a little bit to do with the fact that they needed to face the franchise. But at this point, I probably take care of price that would put them I I would say they would almost have no chance of being able to afford him. With their current cap situation, so that's probably why carry prices off the table. But in a vacuum, I'll take care of price. So I guess I would drop Darcy Kemper off my list and say, what a realistic possibilities we could stretch realistic to a certain extent with Korpisalo and how much it would take To get him away from Columbus. But let's just take it And could you afford them? Theoretically. Flurry. Korpisalo Rask and still, you would be You know you would be conceding. Lot by allowing Pavel France owes to have the first couple months of the season before to carry ask gets there because he's out till January or February. But that would be my list. Korpisalo. Would be the number one, then flurry, then two core. Ask after that. I don't think there are a lot of good options. 522987 to take your thoughts on those two stories that are driving the show Coming up next drew lock spoke today. How is he a better quarterback now than he was. When we last left them, he will tell you himself. I do not pretend to speak on behalf of Drew lock. "Is the these are the kind of things that are running through the head of Joe Sakic. This is what General managers get paid big bucks to do. Is to take a balanced approach between winning now and winning in the future. That is Joe Sakic's job as much as we would love to see him sell out for one year. Resigned. Gabriel Landeskog resigned. Philipp Grubauer go and spend in the luxury tax to go grab Somebody else. You like the Pierre Luc wa days just wheeling and dealing as much as we would like Joe Sakic to do that. The system in place does not really allow him to do it the way that Pierre Laquan did obviously being a salary cap sport now But he has to take a measured approach. And the measured approach that he is taking. As we want wants Gabriel Landeskog back. But he does not want Gabriel Landeskog contract to turn into an albatross around the neck of his organization when he's got to pay McKinnon my car And Mikko Rantanen between nine and $10 million a year. Is it a little bit risky? What the avalanche are doing? Yes, it's a little bit risky. I think they are taking Landeskog for granted to an extent. Because for me with Gabriel Landeskog It's not about his production. Yes, he was in the top 25. This year. But I could stick a lot of different guys on the same line as Nathan MacKinnon, amigo Rantanen. And replicate close to the production that Gabriel Landeskog cast. It's not about his production. It's about his leadership. That's what you worry about. Have no problem with what the ABS are doing here. I'm a little bit surprised that they're not They haven't progressed in their talks. As far as I may think that they would have by this point. But I understand Joe Sakic holding out here and negotiating There's a lot of other things going on and ultimately part of Gabriel Landeskog value can be replaced. His leadership can even be replaced. It's just that's the tougher thing to do. And that's what you worry about losing more than anything else. It's not the production is the leadership. Are they as tempting fate? Are they taking Gabriel Landeskog for grand Little bit? Yeah, I think they are just a little bit. But these are the type of decisions That general managers are tasked with making We would love to keep everybody that we love and get rid of everyone that we hate. And I mean it in a sports hate way. Want. Keep everyone that we love. Get rid of everybody that we don't And then add more players. It would be hard to think about Gabriel Landeskog and any other sweater. And that will be a shock to the system if he does indeed, leave. But I think we are ways away from that. No. Gabriel Landeskog has shared his disappointment. I understand his disappointment. To me. Joe Sakic has shown enough. But I think he's playing this within the margins. I think he Is not pushing gay Berlin has got too far away. And I'm sure all along. They've said that they wanted him back. So they're not ignoring him. Little bit of risky business, but I understand the avalanche side of things. Because it's not just about this year. As much as we want this team to go all in for one year push all the chips in the middle. Go sign Alexander Ovechkin to a one year deal. Just load up and go for it as much as we like to do that Joe Sakic lives in a different world. Does. He still has to answer? He asked to answer for the decisions he makes in 2021 in 2023 2024. And that's what he's looking out for right now, and he's trying to balance the two Speaking of Alexander Ovechkin, you know he's exposed to Guy who has meant just as much, if not more. To his organization. I understand Ovechkin's a little bit older. But still So many people have been making the look at what this guy has done for US argument. What is that The past results don't guarantee future performance. Labour, Landeskog is still in his prime. Alexander Vegetables might be starting on the back nine of his career. But if people were going to make the argument, okay, all that Gabriel Landeskog has done for this organization, Alex Alex Ovechkin has done that and more. He's hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup. He has more personal hardware than Gabriel Landeskog does in Washington left him exposed. You don't think that Alexander Ovechkin Is a little bit disappointed. In the Washington Capitals. Of course he is. It can't be just about what have you done for me before? And I think too many people are making that argument and it just it doesn't apply. It's what can he do for me now? And what can he do for me in three years and four years in five years? This is a negotiation. I still believe that Gabriel Landeskog remains with the Colorado Avalanche. I definitely don't think he's going to Seattle. But again, I I get it from both sides. I really do. I understand the motivation from both parties. And we'll see in the coming days. What happens? Tomorrow is the last day where Seattle I believe can negotiate with Gabriel Landeskog. And then those negotiations are closed. They got to decide. Are we taking Gabriel Landeskog? As an unrestricted free agent in signing him from the Colorado Avalanche, or did we not make any inroads and we got to look at the onus Don score J. T Compher and the other players that Colorado expose That decision is a little bit more than 24 hours away. Actually, it's less than that. Because the crack and have to submit their list of players they chose their taking by tomorrow morning. So we're less than 24 hours away. A little bit more than 12 hours away. From knowing. Or from the crack in deciding But I would be shocked to see him with Seattle. I still think the biggest threat is ST Louis..

"In this especially the Vegas Golden Ninth Series. One player that on most nights could be relied on and that was Philipp Grubauer. We have heard how important fill of group our is to this team for two years now, his absence last year in the playoffs. Was noticeable. And it had an impact. His presence in these playoffs was notable. And had an impact. I understand that he does not come with quite the track record that some other elite goaltenders do, But I think If nothing else, we need to acknowledge that this guy is one of the better. Goaltenders in the NHL. And by that standard, he should be paid as such. And my preference would be that he gets paid by the Colorado Avalanche. If this season means as much To the future of Jared Bednar. And this and and just this franchise. In general, if it means that much to them. They gotta pay Philip Group our And I would go so far as to say if they if Joe Sakic has the Sophie's choice of deciding between his goaltender in his captain, I would go Philipp Grubauer. And that's not a knock on Gabriel Landeskog. But tough decisions have to be made. When you're the general manager of a hockey team and That's the way I would go on the difficult decision. I don't know. And here's one thing that I didn't bring up when I opened the show with this And I and it's It's the Fall back argument. It's the fallback question. I understand that, but it is that for a reason. If not Philipp Grubauer, then whom Because I looked at the potential free agents internally you will have unless you decide to resign. Devin Dupnik, who certainly when it costs as much as Philipp Grubauer, you would have Jonas Johansson. Impossible. Francis, those will be your two goaltenders. I like Francis. I do. As a backup. So If we agree that wedding Philipp Grubauer signed a massive contract somewhere else. Would be in the best fiscal interest of the Colorado Avalanche, allowing them to keep some other players. Maybe bringing back Landeskog and Brandon Saad. Or something to that effect. Then who would you get? To replace him. Because I looked at the names. And the only to unrestricted free agents. That have a good track record in the NHL that you're like, Yeah. These guys were franchise are were Franchise. Goaltenders, Peck Arena and two core. Ask. Macarena. Had a major injury this year to go or ask, is going to have labrum surgery. This off season. And it's not to say that either one of those guys might not fetch close to what Philip Group our fetches. But there are serious health concerns with both of those players, and they're the only ones That the Avalanche can straight up sign. Sorrows. The other goaltender from Nashville. Which would be intriguing is that restricted free agent giving Nashville the right to match any offer that come in. In an ideal world would you be? Would you pay your goaltender? $9 million a year. No Because we have seen with the likes of Carey Price and Marc Andre Fleury, and I know they're not great examples this year because of how well they played. But there has been multiple years within their contracts where it looked like it was an albatross around the neck. Of their respective teams. And I can't guarantee That one day in the future that we're not going to look at the Phillip Group our contract and say that's an albatross around the necks of the Colorado Avalanche. But for right now, he is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL and you are out of options. I think you are tempting fate by just simply promoting Paavo France owes to the starting goaltender job for a team that is now absolutely Expected. To go to a Stanley Cup final. I looked, I don't see the viable options. And if you look at the teams that are left In the Stanley Cup playoffs. Would you not say that one trait that they all have in common is that they have elite goaltending. Carey Price has played an an elite level. Marc Andre Fleury has played at an elite level. Semyon Varlamov, since being reinserted in goal for Barry Trotz has played at an elite level and then Oh, by the way you have Andrei Vasilevskiy, who's been Probably the best goaltender in the NHL for a few years now. As many issues as the Avalanche have had in trying to feel that position since Patrick Wall retired. I don't see how you can. Now. Try your darndest if you're Joe Sakic to get Philipp Grubauer to take a team friendlier deal. Convince him to not take full market value for his services. But I just I don't. I don't see the other option. For the Colorado Colorado Avalanche in this in this free agent pool. And who is available on the trade market. I just And then internally Pavel France owes I just don't And I've already found out that I'm in the minority here, but I just think that that it's going to bite you. There's no reason to think Phillip Group hours not going to be elite goaltender next year. 23 years down the road who knows? Age catches up with everybody. But Given what this season is going to mean they to me. They have to have group our In goal. Because there is not.

"Some restricted free agents? Or do they not want to mess with anything like that, and they just take guys who have multiple years left on their deals, But that's for Seattle. That's not for the Avalanche. To really worry about. You can protect seven forwards, three defenseman and a goalie or eight skaters, regardless of position or going This is the list that I came up with and see if you agree. Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon Kale MacArthur, who is a restricted free agent. Oh, Bayram. The VON Caves. Sam Gerard J. T. Compher, Andre Berger cops Ian Paavo Francis Eunice Johanson, I don't believe is the goaltender that the ABS would want to protect and fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you feel about the next conversation we're going to have They don't have to worry about protecting group our because he's a free agent. So that's the list. I came up with notable players that would be exposed. Larry Natural Skin, Joonas Donskoi, Nazem Kadri, Eric Johnson, Tyson, Joseph and Ryan Graves. Those are the ones that are under contract that would be exposed. To the Seattle crackin. If I am understanding the rules of the expansion Jeff correctly and I believe I am But those players will be the ones that are exposed. Don't know that there's anyone on that list and you may like one guy or another. Joonas Donskoi has been a great pick up. We talked about how important Nazem Kadri was in in more accurately how much they missed him. Due to his suspension. Valen Itu's skin has been a nice player, but certainly not one that you can't live without error. Johnson his entire contract is a complete albatross, so I think the Sakic will be begging. For Seattle to take Eric Johnson. I don't think that's going to happen. And in fact, Eric Johnson is waiving his no movement clause, which protected him when Vegas came into the league. He's reportedly waving that so if Seattle wants them, they can get them. Don't know that an off injured defenseman north of 30 years old. That's making $6 million a year would be at the top of their priority list. But again, I'm not inside the Seattle cracking war room. Tyson, Jost and Ryan Graves. Especially Ryan Grave. I think is is what you might lament ending up losing. And if I'm Seattle, I look at Ryan Graves. I say That would be a nice piece. To have but you can only protect so many guys. Unless they take Eric Johnson. You're not going to free up a lot of money. Which leads me into the real conversation. I wanted to have In the first segment. I was just Throwing out that list to see What you thought about that. But the real conversation I wanted to have to start here. You have to soon to be free agents. That would be in demand if they hit the open market and Gabriel Landeskog and Philipp Grubauer. This is a team in the avalanche that is not flush with cap space. It will be a tight squeeze to bring them both back. I do believe That they can if they make the right ancillary moves in order to free up cap space. But that that's getting too granular. That's getting too much into salary cap and all that kind of stuff. I don't want to get That in the weeds My question is this and it's based on something that Paul Kelly said on this show a week or so ago. Mentioned Philipp Grubauer. And compared him. To Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks. In that he is a nice goalie, that you can obviously win a championship with, but he is not necessarily elite. When you bring up Corey Crawford. That's what you're saying. So if you frame it that way. Then the money that fill of group Our might command out on the open market is not worth it to the Colorado Avalanche. But the question that I would pose can the avalanche of four not to pay Philipp Grubauer. And we'll have the Gabriel Landeskog discussion and another time. I want to talk about Philipp Grubauer. Philipp Grubauer, being a Vezina Trophy finalist can command upwards. $7 million and even at seven That might be a little bit short of what he could actually earn. On the free agent market. I think you're looking at more like nine. Because Vasilevskiy, who signed an extension in the last couple years with Tampa and then the last big name Free agent goalie on the market. Sergei Bobrovsky signed deals in that neighborhood 9 9.5 $10 million Always that you can believe that you believe you can win a Stanley Cup with do not normally hit the free agent market. And one of the goal is that's left in this series are in this round. Carey Price signed a massive extension a few years ago, which, until these playoffs look like an albatross around the next Of the Montreal Canadians. Now he's playing like vintage carry price, and he's worth it. Same with Marc Andre Fleury, who make $7 million a year. That contract was once an albatross. Now it seems like good value. For a guy that's up like Philipp Grubauer for the Vezina Trophy. I just don't See how the Colorado Avalanche Cannot make Philipp grubauer, their number one priority. This off season. The most consistent player. In their series with Vegas. Was Philipp Grubauer. I understand that this team is very good. And I will.

Those are wishing that those shooting lanes would be open, Peter, but they're just not blocked shots for Vegas. I mean 15 to 9, Colorado, but it just feels like it's more than that. Connor. Are we going to get a penalty here too? I think so. Get out with his hand. I think he did. That's what they're talking about here. Uh, that was my initial reaction. But there was no there was no, it was just a point to the to the face off circle wasn't a penalty and that's what J t Compher was arguing right away. And white clouds going to go to the box here. Peter Power play for the avalanches. Another Vegas finally number 22 minutes to lay again, So it's It's like the one we had in Game three. It was a strange one. The Theodore sending mesh. This is almost the same thing. Only with the hand. Yeah, reaches up and knocks out of the ring. Here. It is kinda right now. Yeah, no kidding. I mean, the Avalanche Marc Andre Fleury in that you already know you're going to have to get four to win right? And then the avalanche after they have to at four. If your group our let's start with the pressure there, you can't allow. Another girl is getting getting five against flurries going to be a real task. Yep. So you've got to keep it where it is. Yep, And that's gone in for Mikko Rantanen, hasn't it? Exactly. Those are the ones he hasn't met. We could just see the anger as he skated off the ice, right? Has got to put it behind him. And when the draw of the near side wall Burakovsky he's trying to spin away from Riley Smith. He does. It sits down the wall immediately denied by Vegas and now Devon tapes were played over for Sam Gerard. Active. Hands it off for Gerard across the Red line. No goals in the first period, Philipp Grubauer once against stellar, especially in that opening frame. As the AVS man. It's just three shots on goal in the first period out shot 14 to 3, but group is strong, so we're scoreless heading into the second, the first goal the second period. Vegas is slow to get to it. "Four lanes to fund I 72 exit to according to face off will be the right of Marc Andre Fleury. Peter McNab. I apologize. O'Connor. This was a gift. This is the letter of the law. It's the right call. Theodore just went to play. The pocket popped out of the zone coming off the ice. To many, you know, there's no way he was trying to do that. But it is the letter lives on my call. And now the avalanche get a power play, and we talked about this numerous times that this penalty is probably here to stay. The ABA lines are going to be offside here, but Right. He played it into the mesh behind Fleury. And usually we see the delay of game penalty when it goes over the glass into the stands like, say at the Blue line, but this was out of play behind the Vegas Golden Knights net. And it was in mid air. It's not like he had it on the stand. You can flip it out of the zone, the parts coming up 3.5 4 ft high and he just went to play it and it chipped out of the zone. The letter of the law, as you mentioned is an intentional play that goes out of play. Intentional play on the puck face up one by Vegas, Martinez will launch it down ice Grubauer has to make it saved. That's actually a dandy on a bouncing puck. Those are trickier than me. Look. As a car will leave it for Nathan MacKinnon. He flies through center ice moving at the speed of sound Landeskog holed up at the point. Landeskog still has it down The wall and Vegas is in tune with the Avalanche power play. They force it back to center into the avalanche line. 4 34 to go in the second period. 1 14 to go in the power play first of the game for the Avalanche. McKinnon Through center like Makin and his shot save made by Fleury had to be quick on that one. Landry Scott down low for McKinnon Alpi for Kim, a car walks the blue line near sign Makin keeps himself McKinnon, a shot and miss by much. High on Marc Andre Fleury. Eco. Rantanen gets the return feed from the car down the far wall to the corner below the goal line. Land has got now. Mikko Rantanen, the car one timer blocked in front. Just sitting there in Vegas will clear Corbyn stick belongs to Stevenson and Vegas catches a break a car trying to catch them in a change. He can't As he'll hand it off for Andre Burakovsky, who just off the bench. 35 seconds to go on the power play for Pawlowski gives you the near side corner, chops it around bouncing. Carlson is there Almost dispossessed by saw checked by ballerina shoes in Vegas will get it and sneak it past Devante caves and down ice 20 seconds to go on the power play. Grubauer leaves it for tapes Reilly Smith monitoring the situation. Games ahead for Gerard. He rested in off the glass. Burakovsky kicks it. Sean is there Burakovsky did appoint Tate's settles it down on the forehand over for Sam Gerard, Reaching four spins away with the corn on Gerard. He's plastic By Riley Smith. Vegas Clears off Escape as have it back, though Birkoff ski running circles around the center circle Power play is over the Avalanche road for one. Hard will wrist it in on his fellow native of Quebec. Marc Andre Fleury. Gerard Fluid time Greg Your pardon, Peter Sherwood lost his quarter patterns into an odd man rush near side off of the stick and skate of talk. He has gathered in and Sherwood will have the other direction Sure would appoint to check from Marcel Hank will pick it up down the Travis Oy behind Marc Andre Fleury. White Cloud backhand feed broken up. Hi Belmar. But now it's two on one as trying to get back. There's talk waiting too long Talk still with the puck leaves it for Marcia. So ads are way down deep, centering feed broken up by graves. He swats it aside, Nick Watt turns it over graves up the middle out down ice. Will it be icing it will. It will just cross the goal line to the right of Marc Andre Fleury as we get a whistle, and some tired legs have to remain on the ice. Peter For the avalanche with 2 19 to go in the second tied of one. Yeah, a little bit of an uneventful power play for the Avalon Beginning had one good opportunity. One good shot for the Avalanche again. Thanks. Even though things aren't going your way. You gotta keep making the smart by the strong place and at times the easy play and they got a little stubborn last game. I don't think that's the same situation right now. But if I get through and get through, get the intermission, right? Passed from graves. His office skate, reeled in by feed or quickly had for Mark Stone stone across the blue Line, thereby Nathan MacKinnon. And now it's kicked aside by Mikko Rantanen, Branton and ahead, McKinnon. He squeaks down the near side boards. McKenna gets loose. He launched a handle on it Swept away, Frank Way, the other way. Prepared already pats ready end save me! Of our high AM group and for the second game in a row patch ready has a clear cut breakaway and Philipp Grubauer says Sorry. We're closed. Davonte once the odd man rush ahead from McKinnon has ran to new with him, leaves it for ranting and ranting and holding, shooting itself a body. It was Pietrangelo and why Stone has it again. Up the boards over the stick of a car hawks now for will carrier. He's not designed by Tyson. Joe's carrier continues behind the net, but he doesn't take the puck with bison just hasn't Head for JT Conference, Ill advised Pass Broken up by Brown. "Have you aboard 2.5 hours. Of celebration and reverence. For Philipp Grubauer coming your way. The Nuggets Play the Blazers tonight that game tips off at six. Our coverage from altitude begins at 5 30, so just a little bit of the show snipped off today. That's all right. 2.5 hours is plenty of time to accomplish what we want to accomplish. Or what I want to accomplish. I don't know what you want to accomplish. That's why We have a tax line in a phone line for you have 5229872 because I want to know what you want to accomplish today. What do you want to talk about today? I am my agenda. It is a full agenda. I have two guests. I am equally excited about both. Paul Clear. The Gazette is going to join me in the next segment. Our number three. Leading goalscorer for switchbacks FC Haji Barry is going to be my guest. They're back at home and back in action. More importantly, On Saturday. So Haji will stop buying our number three. But I'm flexible. Whatever you want to talk about. I'm here for it, 5229872, but we're starting today with Philipp Grubauer. That's where we're starting. No. The Vezina Trophy is a regular season award. Last night was a Vezina Trophy moment. Four Philipp Grubauer I thought Game two was going to go up. Not exactly why Game one. But you had to feel confident. When Vegas gets four penalties in one period. I know that the Arabs only converted on one of them, but still if that was setting a trend for the rest of the game. You had to like the Arabs chances. Their power play in the first five games of the playoffs is hitting at nearly 50%. That is not a winning formula. If your Vegas and clearly at the first intermission, Peter de Boer said. Hey, fellas, we can't do this. And to Vegas credit Um, the penalties went away. No penalties in the second one in the third and of course, won in overtime. Which led to Mikko Rantanen game winner. The night's just they flipped a switch. At the end of the first period, and I thought for the remaining 40 minutes of regulation, they took it to the ABS. They were the better team. The ABS were scrambling. To defend this team. They gave up a lot of quality chances. It's not just The quantity. Which we'll talk about in a minute. But it was the quality of chances. That Vegas had, and Philipp Grubauer turned nearly every single one of them away. The only two goals that Philipp Grubauer loud last night. One was on a terrific cross ice pass to Alec Martinez. Where group our couldn't slide across the crease in time to Defendant. And then the second one was a Reilly Smith breakaway. And that wasn't the only break away in the game. There are a few of them. And Philipp Grubauer was there all night long. As tense as that game. God and he got really intense. In the third period. Philipp Grubauer. Cool as a cucumber man. You just Who is making every save that was necessary. To keep the abs. In that game, and while Mikko Rantanen is going to get a lot of headlines You heard the call there from Connor McGahee to start the show, even though he's going to be hailed as a hero. After the game. He was very quick to point out who the real hero of last night's game once I was out today, I think he had, uh Really, really good game and he kept us in the game. You know, it's his. He was basically the reason why we When we got to ot and and then it's good our specialty and step up there. But Ruby, who was awesome, and for sure best player in the game. You have to figure out ways and Mikko Rantanen also talked about this. You got to find ways to win games where you don't play your best, and last night was certainly one of them for the Avalanche. Wasn't their best game, not by a long shot, not in these playoffs and It doesn't stack up well with a lot of performances throughout the season, but you got to figure out a way to win games like that. When you're not on your game or the other team. Let's not even take anything away from Vegas. Vegas was terrific after they got there. Heads kicked in in Game one. And when the first period last night was not great. Give them credit for being clearly the better team in the 2nd and 3rd periods. When that happens, you still got to figure out ways to win. But you can't do that. Unless you have a guy behind you in goal that you can trust and that you can lean on And Philipp Grubauer was all that and more. Last night. Something that rarely happens. As Philipp Grubauer pointed out, the ABS were out shot by 16. And Philipp Grubauer, even though he was terrific. Doesn't seem like he wants to have another game like that. I mean, doesn't happen too often. I can't even remember the last time we might have been in Vegas. We got outside a little bit, but for the most part, we do unbelievable job of keeping eyes three outside and not allowing too many shots. I mean, today was an exception, but you're going to make sure the next game doesn't happen again. And Philip Group hours. Memory does serve him. Well, the last time they were out shot by double digits. Was that Las Vegas meeting of the regular season. And I was looking last night and I didn't go all the way back to the beginning. The season I I went to the beginning of April the last two months. Of the season for the Colorado Avalanche. They have been out shot by double digits twice. Twice. That's it in two months of hockey. They've been out shot to that degree. Only.

Because this is the best part of my day is getting To chat sports with you. And we will do so over the next 2.5 hours. We do have the nugget and Timberwolves coming up at 5 30. Much to get into and discuss before Our time is up. I have two guests today. One coming up in 20 minutes. That is publicly of the gazette and then an hour number three. We'll talk a little prep sports. How about Manitou Springs football? Playing for a state championship this weekend. First time in 30 years they've had that opportunity. Their head coach, Cory Archuletta, will be my guests. The rest of the time is yours. 5 to 2. 9872. We have much more on the NFL schedule release. Going through it not only from the Broncos perspective, but From the NFL. As a whole perspective. I welcome your thoughts on that at 5 to 29872. We start, though, with the Colorado Avalanche and The month of May for the ABS has been Kind of a grind. I mean, every one of their six games in the month going into last night. Was decided by a single goal. All extremely important, all vital points that the avalanche were earning, but they had to earn it. They won four of five. To put themselves in a situation where if they were to beat Vegas. That they would Have the opportunity. To clinch Division title and home ice. And in another one goal game, they won So now that they Did that. They did 145. And then they Go into the Vegas game with that the situation the way it was, they beat Vegas by a goal. With all that being done? Clearly what the avalanche wanted to get across, wanted to convey. Last night was we're not laying the King's Take this away from us. We made it this far. Elway's not Not taking this away. And Even in a game where they did not have Nathan McKinnon. They still put up six schools. At one point they had out shot The king's 13 Nothing. To start the game. That's where it started right before Birkhoff Ski scored the first goal. ABS were out shooting the king's 13 Nothing. Philip grew power. In order to notches seventh shutout. Of the season had to stop all of 18 shots. It was a complete and other domination. Of an inferior opponent. Which is not totally unexpected. We've seen the Avalanche dispatch of lesser teams in similar ways. Have three or four games were they've won six? Nothing. Seven. Nothing ain't nothing They can do that. But it's just such a stark contrast to what the month of May has been in this build up. Where we are. Right now, today. On the precipice of the Colorado Avalanche, locking up a division crown and home ice advantage throughout the postseason. The home eyes through the entire postseason would come because they would also most likely Not most likely they would When the president's trophy So the road To the Stanley Cup. Goes through Colorado if they win tonight. Now. In a one off game like this. You may think That you go with your best players. You go all out tonight. You just got to get this one win. You've done all of this work now you're right there. You need one more win. Throw the a squad up there and buy the a squad. I mostly mean in goal with Philipp Grubauer. Now, in order to do that, Jared Ben are would have to Play Philipp Grubauer. I'm back to back nights, something he has not done this season. He was asked last night. Are you going? To play Philipp Grubauer. In fact, it was. It was not even that it was even more general than that. Have you given thought? The bucking that trend and potentially starting Philipp Grubauer in goal. Against the Kings in the second game. And the answer from Jared Bednar. Are was an emphatic No. With no extra words mixed in No. Now he was Pushed on it. Later in his post game press conference. I believe the question was, actually are. Are you sure that's a good idea? I think that was very similar to wagering because That's the reaction that you get. You have one game. I know it's back to back nights, but you got one game. Division Presidents trophy home eyes all can get clinched tonight. You're not going to roll. With your number one goaltender your Vezina Trophy. Finalists. So we expect Philipp Grubauer to be No. Jerry Ben are then proceeded to When he was pressed. Um, talk about how much he believes. And, uh Honest your Hanson. And how he trusts him and how At the same time, he does not want to risk injury to Philip Grubauer. So it's almost the antithesis of the conversation we had yesterday about the Nuggets, potentially resting Nicole Yokich. Right. It was You probably want to arrest him. Right? Probably want arrest him. With Philo Group are you probably don't want arrest him because it's one game. The Nuggets cannot. Gain that much, not nearly as much as the Colorado Avalanche can with a win tonight. Nuggets are playing tonight against the tea wolf. This win could draw them even with the Clippers. I have Check the schedule but at least moves them to within a half a game. They can gain ground on the Clippers tonight. For the third seat. That is not nearer as much on the line is what the ABS have. Nuggets already have home court. Have no chance of getting the top seed. Even if they moved up to the three seed all it would guarantee them is home court advantage in the first round. With the Colorado Avalanche..

I mean, if it's I would say overall in the game tonight and If and when these two teams meet in the postseason. It's going to be the goaltending position because while I think that Colorado is definitely better and has A superstar of front on the blue line altogether. I think they have more skilled forwards than Vegas. It's going to be goaltending because you have to business candidates and just gonna come down to who can be one save better. That's what it was. Vegas when They entered the playoffs. That versus L. A flurry was one save better than Jonathan. Quick was spectacular. That was the best goaltending performance. I've ever seen in the NHL, and then it was bright and hoping for the Washington Capitals, who was once a better make one stop. On a breakaway in the Stanley Cup final, and that's what Capitals beat the Vegas Golden Knights. So I think Philipp Grubauer, Can you be one save better than The night Is that letter or Fleury? I think it's gonna be flooring the playoffs, but that's going to be the key for me and Grubauer has it in him, and I think he could be the ticket to the promised land for the Colorado Avalanche. Certainly has been so far. You could hear Connor on the call. Puck drop is just after eight.

"Good. Don't think about don't think that way so the Avalanche being postponed. I immediately thought. Well, that's three fewer games out there without Philipp Grubauer. I am not saying it's a good thing. It is not a good thing when you have three positive case of cases of Cove it in addition to the fourth with Philipp Grubauer What it does kind of change the outlook. A little bit. Still think, Devon Dude, Nick is going to be the guy we saw Kate Schefty tweeted out that Joonas Donskoi. We know now know is one of the players who tested positive. Um When they resume. Kevin do Nick, I believe will be the starting goalie of the Colorado Avalanche. And there's still two games against ST Louis and two against Vegas, probably before Of group our comes back. But it does change things a little bit. Not good. I would rather than as be playing and not have Cove it, of course. Right as we're looking at an interesting two weeks now. Basically one of those weeks has been Taken away. I win. Is there any winner the NHL playoffs going to start? They still haven't announced that yet. Because now they just now got The Canucks cleared to go back out on the ice in play games. So they got to make up a bunch of games. Now the ABS got to make up these three At least they're going to try to. Maybe they might. Say you know what? This is the drop dead date if you don't have enough for going winning percentage Sorry I am..

Grubauer notches 4th shutout, Avalanche beat Kings 4-0
"Philipp Grubauer rejected all eighteen shots he saw as Colorado shut out Los Angeles to nothing the avalanche of won six of their last nine for Grubauer this was the third straight game in which he faced twenty or fewer shots because I don't get a shot for like maybe five or six minutes doesn't mean like I can just put member lab up there and hang back in the crease and enjoyed a few that's not the case Mikko Rantanen scored in the second period then assisted on Nathan mackinnon's late empty netter meanwhile Calvin Peterson did his best to keep L. A. in the game piling up a career high forty four saves but it wasn't enough as the kings have dropped six of their last eight Bruce Morton Denver

"Not have Philipp grubauer. Holy of the ABS. But he said it was a Big bounce back from the Colorado Avalanche. Hell of a bounce back, I think is is what he said. Okay. Matt Matt found him. Here's Philipp Grubauer. However, response compared to last game. I think everybody Body and everybody Obrecht hard 60 minutes. We didn't have, like, five minutes. Uh, pressure on them and then 15 minutes an hour zone. So it was really good. Um And I think that, Mika said. It's not about always like the points where the goes but he assist you Were you score and have it's it's about the team and helping the team then and I think that was really good game from us. And that kind of goes back to what Jared Bednarz said the other night about the, uh, ABS getting Fancy a little too fancy and games. That kind of speaks to that. Right. You have so many talented guys. Everybody's out. I'm not saying that anybody Is act like they're above the team, and everybody on that team wants to win the Stanley Cup more than anything else, But there are guys Even you look at a Brandon Saad. Or Nazem Qadri guys that aren't on the ABS top line, then aren't Landeskog granted in McKinnon, Even those guys have had productive careers. They've scored. Goals and you got these younger guys like Bayram and Kalma car. They're trying to make name names for themselves, so there's a lot of guys with a lot of offensive talent that want to put up numbers. They want to do it in a day. Off the team and to try and help the team win. There's nothing nefarious here, they're all pulling in the same direction. It's just sometimes. You get guys that are trying to be the hero trying to be fancy, instead playing within the team. And a system that is going to get you plenty of goals The ABS have not wanted for scoring. Over the last couple of years. So you're gonna get your goals if you play within the system, but sometimes Guys kind of fight against that. And they wanna, you know, especially when you look at the games that they Even these last couple of games. Vegas you know your eyes get wide. Right. You get You see what your team in Arizona and another one you have. You have great success against the team. And you're having great success against them in a game. And you want to get yours like when you have a game like last night, or even a game like two nights ago. Where the ABS get up to nothing. You can kind of feel That you're on the verge of just blowing this thing wide open. And you tend to get away from some of the things that you're supposed to do, because you want to make sure that you get in on this. And that's what caused the ABS the other night. Last night. Not so much. They buckled down. They protected the lead first and foremost, they did the things necessary to protect Philipp Grubauer. And into that end We talked the other day about Philipp Grubauer in look, eat. No one's gonna You know, miss taken for Patrick Walk? Okay, the he's not a Hall of Fame goaltender. All right. You got to give him some help. You can't expect him to make You know, 40 saves the night. And last night, they only asked him to make 26. I'm looking back at Philip grew Powers game long. And Some of the the Sometimes when you and it's not just this year, but it's just in the time that Phillip Bauer has been with the ABS. More shots. That he faces. And this is true of a lot of goaltenders. But there's ah, some goaltenders. The elite ones have higher thresholds, right? You could put 30 35 shots on them, and they'll still be able to stand up and make most of those saves. Philip grew power on occasion has done that. But it's not a trend that you want to continue. You want to keep the shots. As low as possible for every goaltender, but especially one that you understand is is not among the elite goaltenders in the league and the ABS did a great job last night. Protecting Philipp Grubauer, making sure the shots he did face the shots that were let through. He saw cleanly. So I thought it was a complete team effort last night from the ABS to bounce back and to that end Gereb NR had some insightful things to say. About The team and where they're at and what they're still trying to learn. Let's go ahead and play that second. Jared Ben our clip If you don't mind that I'm not getting that one to play. Okay. We don't have it. So are our audio is, uh, Wedding US down today. All right. But Basically what Jared Bednarz said. And if we could grab it later will bring it back so you could get in the full contact, but Basically what Jared Ben are said. Woz. That this team has taken some criticism. And While he wouldn't He's not trying to shield As from that criticism or give them excuses. He made a comparison of where they were at this point last year and where they are this year in the records are very similar. And he says on top of that, so we've been able to get about the same record. Despite Not playing for 11 days, missing guys due to injury due to covet. All the issues that coveted brings to the table and I think he did.
Rantanen, Grubauer lead Avalanche to 3-0 win over Senators
"Phil approve our turned aside thirty four shots as Colorado won its fifth in a row blanking on away three nothing I think the last couple games him before the break I think we did a really good job keeping you know to get a lot of shots the quality of chances we keep down so that's what we need moving forward and it's a game to build on again and get better and get better and bill consistency here the game winner came from Mikko Rantanen with forty one seconds left in the first period Renton and gain the pocket the senators blueline walked in and said the back and top shelf past Marcus hog bird the ads gain separation with a pair of third period goals as for punch list Ottawa in its last six games it is scored nine goals Bruce Morton Denver
