"The fruit the tomato and the lemon. What's the fruit the tomato? And oh, really Mitch, that is a fucking thing. I know it is. I know it is. Look it up. I know it is you rub it in my face all the time. I know it is. What's your order? Just kidding, go back to your seat. Salt bagel plain cream cheese. That's my most common go to. I love a salt bagel. Pretzels for breakfast, baby. Thank you very much. Thank you. Oh, I was gonna give my bagel order read the room. Okay, we tofu cream cheese. We have three more three more guys waiting. And I think we can get to all of them and then we'll we'll call it a show. This guy's pissing on the microphone. I think he thinks he's in the bathroom. Okay. No, this is another preference question. Yes. You know, like, I don't know how anybody can think that there is anything better than Hines for catch up. But for mustard, there's so many different types. Yeah. And even different, even like Dijon, there's like 5 different ones that taste very different. I have a mustard in my fridge. But truly, I'm married to a white woman, so we have like a thousand mustards and the one I like for hot dogs though is just French's yellow. That's my jam on hot pepper. French is yellow all the way. I love a French is yellow. Just traded mics with me. I did because I take umbrage with your assumption inherent in the question is that there is nothing better than Heinz's. Wow. For a catch up and the answer is, Heinz is for crash. Wow. He's into the audience. Good God. Thank God, all of them were almost caught. I think one maybe did hit someone. Please, I hope no one got hurt and it didn't pop. They all opened in the air. Everyone's covered. Like throw it in. And I would have got that in my mouth.

"Do you know that? Yeah. I know. The end of Entertainment Tonight lets me know. It shows all the birthdays. And I was just like, she probably got fucking dreamed out today by fucking angry. He was probably in a bad mood. Hopefully. Probably. Hopefully he was. He at least let him feel that for a fucking day. The audience doesn't want us to talk about Alec anymore. I don't want to talk about it anymore, and I started it, I feel awful. Nathan's famous was founded in 1916 in Brooklyn. Into the morning. Cofounded by Polish immigrants, Nathan and Ida Han worker named for Nathan and over 200 physical locations worldwide and now has over 100 virtual locations due to the pandemic, and Griffin, you got yours from a virtual location. A ghost kitchen. You ate yours in Second Life, right? Did you dog? I uploaded an NFT of cheesy fries. I was not free last night when you guys were making your pilgrimage. That's right. Coney Island so I was planning to go to location today. And I woke up and I found out that there seemed to be no open locations in the island of Manhattan, anymore. They have multiple ghost kitchens. You guys ordered me Nathan's two here from black iron burger. So weird murkiness in terms of how much am I getting Nathan's versus whatever black iron is working on their own kitchen? And we'll talk about it, but your rings look decidedly different than the rings that Mitch and I had. I didn't eat them at a protest because I don't think they were true Nathan's. Right. Wow. Thank you. Thank you. For your sacrifice. You're welcome. You're welcome. Gabriel's, I believe you also, and I don't know if it was a location, or if it was a virtual location, but you got yours in Portland. Yeah. Because when I realized I was landing in New York at four 30, I would have to eat Nathan's before the power hour. And I was like, I just can't do it. And last night, I'm texting these guys. I'm like, I got to figure out something healthy to eat so that I can handle Nathan's before the show. And then I'm like, on Grubhub in Portland, Oregon, and Nathan's pops up. And I'm like, oh, fuck, am I gonna do Nathan's at 11 o'clock at night? And I got Nathan's delivery and the delivery guy looked at me like wellness check. He's like, you're in Portland, Oregon, like every restaurant is open till midnight. You can eat any hipster, any fucking couture food you want. You want two weird hot dogs that deliver worse than they're served, which is bad. And that's what my hotel room alone last night. These guys will post the picture. It is, it looks like a fucking prison. It looks like, looks like fire fest was delivered hot dogs. It was really one of these 24 7 on your grind guys. How do we make the schedule work so I can eat the rest? Because of my career on this tour, I had to eat Nathan's and I have to watch dune. And that's like, I painted myself into this career corner where it's like you got to talk about dune for a little bit of money. You got to talk about hot dogs for a little bit of money, keep hustling gay bris. How did we get so lucky? Look at us now. I told you, dad, I would sort of do comedy and art. I can't tell you how many times I've been like, mom, be quiet..

"Wipe the corners of her mouth and leave. And someone like spotted her. Like a recruiter was like fucking Clint Eastwood in trouble with the curve was like, I haven't seen someone eat like that. Let me guess. The guy looked exactly like quadratus. Absolutely. You got talent, babe. We got the goods. But she was a person where she was watching you from the gas pumps. I was pumping something else. She was someone who wouldn't eat much other than in competition. And other people were eating all the time to make sure their stomach was constantly expanding. I mean, it was like a balance of things, and you talk to these guys and they'd be like, I'm working on butter right now. Next week's butter. And you're like, butter? Wow. And you're like, yeah, butter is not a big one, ten people show up in the audience. But I want to win butter because that way all right, if I can crack the qualifying one. It's really fun. That was a great Kobayashi we know crazy legs and then there'll be someone else and it's like, this guy's name is Ron timson and he has second place in 40 events and it's like, wait, this guy needs more credit. He has eaten 1000 oyster. You know, it's like, yeah. But tubs of mayonnaise is a category. I think crazy legs had oysters also, by the way, no one else here knows crazy like other than you and I we're inclined to like him. But no one has a doughboy's live show knows anything about competitive eaters. But it would be this thing where only the 20 top competitors off season get to do Nathan. Sure. So you have to win some of these sort of sides specific exhibition matches. And some of them were like seasonal, based on holidays, some of them were based on they have a collaboration with this restaurant who wants them to eat their food. Oh, Thanksgiving. It's the turducken competition. But this one is like this place specializes in tamales, how many tamales can eat whatever it is. So if you're not an a lister, you have to be making a mark, the rest of the year in order to get to the Nathan stage. Which is for them, like the coliseum. I mean, you guys took it like the Grammys for doughboy. Fucking Pinnacle, bro. I went to the Nathan's competition this past 4th of July. Did you it was great. Yeah, it was very fun where the cyclones play whatever stage. What does it smell like there? Like a big culinary Johnson. I thought I would think of it. Those are one of my favorite t-shirts. Mom can be so big culinary Johnson t-shirts so many people had hot dog costumes on..

"Was pretty chest, not Joey chestnut was the guy where it's like, oh fuck, this is the most competitive American. Was he the Joey was like a baby at this point, like a very hungry baby? Yeah. Where is crazy legs Conti? Crazy likes Pontiac was his best friend. That's how he got into all of this. Wait, crazy legs is your dad's friend? He was like my dad's guy who he connected to and then he got pulled into this whole universe. I fucking love crazy. Crazy likes Katie who was the alcohol manager at the penthouse executive club. That was his day job. And then at night he ate food. Don't we all crazy legs? When these guys would come over like watching them eat was an interesting to watch them eat? All these guys have different strengths. It's like your dad being Scottie Pippen and having people come over to shoot around for work. Everyone had different because it was like this woman at the time. I don't know if she competes anymore, but there was this woman at the time named Sonia Thomas who I was always the most fascinated by. I think she was called the Black Widow. Yeah, the oyster eater. Right. And her whole thing was that she was like an 18 wheel truck driver. And she would just drive like for 20 hours a day and then once a day she would stop at like a rest stop diner and order everything. And eat the most insane meal anyone had ever seen and then just wipe the corners of her mouth and leave. And someone like spotted her. Like a recruiter was like fucking Clint Eastwood in trouble with the curve was like, I haven't seen someone eat like that. Let me guess. The guy looked exactly like quadratus. Absolutely. "Giving us the honorific of golden plate club acceptance. I don't think that's happening. I feel like the only time white cast, the white castle guy came to the live show at this theater, the last time we did it. And we gave them like one four white cast. You were here. That was a rough experience. I mean, if he's tried it, he agrees. Like, it's okay to be proud of your business and not your taste. Appreciate your honesty. Let's talk about Nathan's a little bit, 'cause that's why we're here. Just as a business in hand. Gabriel Steve shared your history, but Griffin, you talked about your father earlier, and my understanding is that he has some connection to the competitive eating world. We have talked about this in our group text. My father became a very passionate fan of the IF, OCE, which I don't know if they changed their names since, but in the early 2000s, was the international federation of competitive eating. So he was not only going to the 4th of July Coney Island, Nathan's competition, but he was going to like, qualifying matches. Wow. Off season. Someone catches the gym wrestling shows versions of competitive eating. She's in receipt of his favorite guy was Don Moses, who was the king of pickles. But never got to the Nathan state. She was the king of pickles and he used to wear a jacket that was the ten commandments on the two tablets being struck by a pickle in between. And my dad was like, Don, and by the way, he just, I'm also remembering his nickname was Moses. John mouses Lehman, but actually, that's my denomination, I believe. I actually believe that. My dad was just a guy who would go to all of these events until the guy's knew him because he was the only regular and irregular all at the same time. Yeah. He complimented Don Moses larin on the jacket. And then maybe a year later at the next pickle competition, Don gifted him a jacket. Wow. Wow. And she was like, how did you remember? He was like, you're the only person who ever complimented me on the show. I didn't even want to do this. I just felt like I had to do this for you. That does he still have it? Oh yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. But all this badlands, of course, badland Trump loves Don Moses. All these people, he was friends with all of them. I never went because I think my dad's investment, this is embarrassing, but my dad's investment competitive eating was the exact age where I was feeling the most like angsty teenager, and I just wanted to do anything with my family. But the rest of my family would go every year. And I knew these guys, like they would like come over for dinner. Wow. Damn it. Can I ask about that? Not Kobayashi. Can I ask a was your dad betting on competitive eating? I know two things about your dad right now. He was a degenerate sports gambler for many years. And the terms of my mother marrying him were you have to stop betting and you have to stop seeing these 15 people ever again. My sports Friends. When I was like ten, my parents showed me a video of a movie, like a VHS camcorder movie, my mother made for my dad's birthday with all of his best friends. And I was like, who are any of these? I'm the oldest child I've never met one of these people, and she was like, he was a gamble again. Wow. All of them were just ruled out. It's like Pete Rose, Lawrence Taylor. You're like, wow. Dad had a bunch of competitive eaters over the house for dinner..

"Because you're like the car stunt the space. The hand hand looks great. It's not choppy. They hold in wise bring in like ufc fighters and shit like people who really know how to fight. You know. that's the magic. They always have like like six is a great example. They bring in the dude from. Who's like legendary martial artists. They bring in gina carano ryan. They bring in a giant and six. Oh six am. I wrong about that. I miss remembering that tony. Joh- is on the train that they heist running through the jungle. The bus that they run through the jungle jot skins not in six. How the fuck is not happened yet. He better be nine. He will be ten ten. I'm so you bought so hand to hand. So he's great but they also choreographed vince. Hand-to-hand dom hand hand to hand so well that he's never fast or slick so this features and overhead shot of a group of fully geared up fucking swat guys vin sort of one like one man scrum. Just holding them all back. And that's the most vin fucking thing. You can imagine i. I i would argue. Thank you and you're like holy shit. Vin is literally holding back the wave of violence so his family can escape routing to chains granted to chaves under attached to the structure of this thing and this is then he out vins himself. And he's i goes to superhuman strength level and he likes pounding the glass screaming. And what's the thing he says to her when he liked turns that fucking wheel and seals himself in. What does he say he says like. I'm going to misquote here. But he says something like make sure you tell him every day yes he's gonna cares. Message is make sure. My son knows how much i love him. Because the five am was like family and he fucking pulls and then we get our full like graduate transition into life flashing before his is all the water. And then you're sort of. Yeah it's so guide by lady pulls him out we show letty swim down and grab him as he comes to with no way to live and and you're like he came back to life because he felt letise presents letise there. She's like i don't we don't leave anyone behind. And you're just i fucking pop. I'm just stoned enough. I'm just happy enough to be back at the movies. Yeah and i just pop. And i turn i turn to my wife and i'm like holy shit. It got me and she goes are you. I was like yeah. And then i like looked away and i went heavier. I went like movie. I went like like the second. I looked away from her. And just hit me. Like a whole 'nother wave but that fucking sequence is so vin where it's like the heroic moment he gets. His nearly is the sacrifice to save his family by in like a king kong. Hercules was that killed the beast. After right yeah but it is. I just i find that as as goofy and as broad as it is and you know. It's easy to mock just centering. A franchise this big setting constantly as your barometer like the thing that everything needs to be working around of just like the power of chosen family. Yeah it's it's once again a thing that is hitting twice as hard for me now. I know a lot of people like quarantine with their family. Went home saw them. Whatever like i did not see most of my family for the better part of a year. I truly think. I didn't see my father for fifteen months. My sister fifteen months. I still haven't seen my mom or brothers in person since december twenty thousand. Yeah yeah i mean just. I'm coming up on like to like one and a half full years not my family and living and not to jump on here but like living this last year on the west coast my entire family and my my wife's entire family lives on the east coast. Our friends were our family for like the last year. That's what i was gonna say. So it's like whether or not you saw your family during this. It's like that's your family. Those are the people you have right like when when push comes to shove in a crisis moment you go back to them. You work out whatever you have with them or try or whatever but it's like you don't you don't choose your family right and the fast and furious movies are so much about like people you choose and the promises you make to them and those are the people that i think both in a year like we just lived through you rely on more than ever you value more than ever and you miss more than ever you know. I've spent so much time in the last year thinking about people that i like want to be better friends to and even just in a very bare minimum sense of like i should check in on them more often. I just tell them how much i value them more often. I've become such a cornball of just like flat out just telling everyone. I love them. Because i've just gone to this zone where i'm just like i don't know just kind of felt like we were all gonna die like if you love somebody. Tell them you love. Like don't have any fucking shame about that in casual conversations that way now you know. I'm just going to here for him. Man fucking grateful for everyone in my life that i like you know and when you spend a year going like who do i know that's going to die and who can i no longer see now on the other side of the country. You know it really makes you value that she didn't care about it and it's like that's that's what these movies are about at the end of the day it's fucking it. It was just the timing of the my emotional everything about it. Just hit so well that it fucking and it was. The movie was long. The movie did showcase way too many but not too many so many fucking said pieces. It was a lot of things but this movie was so many things to me. And it just fucking. I'm so and honestly i've enjoyed talking to you and hearing you talk about how much you liked it. Like eighty five percent as much as i enjoyed sitting in the theater watching it like but i felt the same. We're talking about it with other people. It's so nice to have this kind of like communal thing again. Even if even the people. I didn't get to see the movie in theaters with right. Have been texting about it with since doing podcast with or whatever it does feel different than i feel like so much of the last year where if felt like so much of the shit that found itself at the center of the discourse was kind of because we were all gawking at it or dunking on it right right. There wasn't kind of communal thing that just sort of felt joyous like this. This is sort of like weirdly enough like a post war olympics right. It was sort of like you know the toronto fam- brought us all together. Like this is like a shirley temple movie like coming out of the great recession. You know exactly exactly. It's like look that's let's put it behind us. The future is bright features. A ton of cars. Buffering some cleavage. And we're ready to fuck in the sexuality of these movies always makes me laugh where it's just like it's like pg thirteen music video sexuality where it's like let's just show butts once or twice so we know that like that's a movie for four men but otherwise there's no other like else like that no it really has become now just the one token at some point. The car drives up to some sort of party where there are a lot of muscle cars parked outside and women in bikinis dancing on top of the cars. Just gotta happen once per movie. pump pump. Some fucking right now and some south american adjacent music just like the fuck and steel drum. Beat fuck i'm so hyped now griffin thank you so much for fucking coming on high and mighty it look..

"This breaks the emotional like spine of the franchise all this shit. All just happened. Very calmly sung king like weighing on podcasts and had these people on his podcasts and like nothing incendiary was said. No one was like shit talking. Anyone and everyone was just kind of like well. Yeah that sucks and then they just quietly did this thing. No one fucking nuhan was back in the movie until the trailer premiered which was at that time only two months before the movie was originally supposed to come out i. We all went like holy shit. How did they keep this a secret and hans in the trailer. He's back alive in. The tagline is justices coming. And you're just like there's nothing snarky or asshole holy about that. There's no kind of like jj. Like negating what ryan johnson did. That's literally listening like yeah. Fan kind of bmi. We kind of agree guys. We'll we'll go fucking patch. This thing that happened happened. We're not negating anything. But there has to be an atonement for this. There has to be consequences for this right. We have to accept this as a heavy reality so like that shit is so good. I don't know what it was like with your audience but seeing this the second time the audience broke out into applause when they show hans face on a computer screen for the first time. Yup when terzhe is like. There's one more photo that came up. You guys better brace yourselves applause break when they reveal that. Han is the sniper on the rooftop applause break before the reveal of the sniper in my screening when the first sniper shot hit someone screamed han lau because it was just so. Perfect like yeah. Yeah it's going to be and and when he walks into like the secret layer another applause break. We're talking about well. We're talking about number twelve on the call sheet and yeah. This is the reaction he gets from the cry right. And this is chain you went. This was not forced upon us. You know this is not because he's the most beloved character from sixty years of the comics or whatever because they cast hot actor or whatever like and addie way texting me while she's watching these movies for the first time right and got to tokyo drift and was like this guy. Han is unbelievable. This is like the coolest actor i've ever seen. It's such a bummer. That they kill him in this movie. She's watching three genuinely not knowing that this franchise is about to bend its entire chronology into pretzels. Just to just just to have him be one ninth of the team right. She doesn't know that he's the fan favourite. She doesn't know the movie series is going to work overtime to keep him around but her immediate impression is this is the coolest guy i've seen in any of these movies. Ramona had one of my best and oldest friend's sits next to me at the draft house. Screening she has only seen hobson. Shaw she has not seen any mainline fast and furious. He comes on screen and she goes. This guy's got the most swag i've ever seen he kinda and immediately. There's a movie gives ever seen in a movie. That's all about everyone trying to be as cool as possible. She just kind of went. Holy shit the way. This guy walks. Yeah well it's the snacking too. And that's yes i it's arguably iconic to watch him pop chips in his mouth like it's not just fucking underplays. Everything it is all so unforced and natural for him and it's fun to see him too because he aged. I love that and the haircut was a really great decision on part of that. I read lynn saying that like you know because they had made the. The flashback wig for when you have. Those flashback scenes. No i want to age. Some tang as an actor into his steve mcqueen period like not the young hotshot kid with the slicked back hair devil-may-care attitude anymore. I want to each him into like being like a legendary fucking. Like paul newman. Cool guy he and he sits on him well. We like a little bit of weight and a little bit of like. I'm a forty five year. Old man look and he looks fucking. Great feels feels real. It feels like in a movie full of people who don't look that human like retirees and ludicrous. Are some of the smoothest handsomeness motherfuckers in a movie. Gerardo is got so much makeup on that. He got zero blemished from forehead to fuck contain lewis. It looks like they line him up every other minute like they interrupt shots to have his barber. come in. i like every wise. Baby hairs done inventory each realize between lines when it's on the other actor they run and quickly they gotta. It's like one of those. James cameron things where it's like. The technology was actually invented. We've found silent hair buzzers. Yes we can keep test lined up during other people's right but like i. It is nice that he's the most human of all these guys but also is just naturally the fucking coolest. There's something about the way. He carries himself that it just in a movie. Full of this are magnificent seven. It's like yeah everyone is trying to fuck out. Act each other out. Swag each other out be cool each other. Is this fucking generous team spirit and you even just look at the fact. I remember this being so fucking like startling watching fast five. And there's so much more conversation about like asian-american representation in media now than than there was ten years ago when fast five came out right and and you know this went viral on twitter recently. But like someone i forget who it was but it was like a screen writer or someone who works in the industry right with a blue check said like a studio executive said to me the other day and people were interpreting this every single way of like. Is this a damning thing. Is this like shitty cynical thing. What is this. But just saying. Like the fast and furious franchise did more for diversity in hollywood than every twitter campaign combined. But i think that is fundamentally true because Hollywood is a bad place..

"Weird to hire young actor who so much better than vin diesel like. This guy's really good dramatic actor. Yeah and what i say to that is re watch the first fast and furious movie. Remember vin diesels background. He was like a fucking new york. Like off off off broadway blackbox theatre act right. Who then became like a weird character. Actor was doing shit like saving private ryan and boiler room where he's like scoring really hard and then had this action star transformation. I think that's what he always wanted to do in his career. But you watch the first fast and furious movie and he's giving a sundance drama performance is arguably maybe a little rod but it fits in the fucking genre that first movie. The car bodas. He's being patrick. Swayze of cars where it's like but his philosophy is family rather than spirit or whatever and then is yes and that is vin. Diesels ultimate superpower as a movie star is. He always knows exactly what movie he's in and he knows the performance to give for that movie. I say by a certainly in his own projects. There's something about him not being afraid of the corny shit that makes him sort of like he never winks at anything. He's doing and it's he takes it so seriously and you're like that's insane but then when you watch fast nine you're like whoa. I'm glad you took it seriously. So i didn't have other. Yes otherwise you're watching your local gifts shit like the hudson trump problem. Where the whole movies winking at you and you're like if you don't care that i don't care and these like put a straight face on this fucking thing and he understands his iconography so well but at this point as you said he's become like this fucking greek god right and he's become like it's become a performance of like fuck and poses rights and like catchphrases and all this shit and i think he was very smarter being like. I need to find an actor. Who's like what. I was twenty five years ago and let that guy. Give the grounded emotionally rooted naturalistic performance. Because people have to remember. That's what dom was right. Like a our first association with dom are meeting with him was in a movie where he had that vibe. And be because this shit's and so absurd in the present tense. We need to w ground that stuff in the past. Now i love combining this with dock with vin. Diesels business acumen. Why wouldn't you put an absolute star. Young dying cares if it steps on you because if that's spins off with young dom which has got to be. Yes a conversation somewhere. Vin diesel gets paid on that in perpetuity. Absolutely you might as well have an absolute fucking banger. This vinnie bennett is the kid's name. I didn't know him before this. You fucking but he's good great like everyone. I know random strangers people are like once more of that guy. This can walk too hot. And he's a good actor. Put them in more movies and venus. Just gonna do fucking victory laps about this. Even if it doesn't become an adventures of young toronto franchise you know vein is gonna feel such pride over the fact. He launched that guy's career yup when that shouldn't be star for the next two decades because he he played an iconic the young version of an iconic character late. We're talking about like. He's getting a play wolverine movie. You're playing young toronto. I think he looks the correct amount like vin. And not like in. I think he makes all the correct choices. In terms of how much he is doing an impersonation how much he's doing his own thing. All of that just feels incredibly incredibly. Well judged. it's fucking. It's so simple but it means so much watching it. You're just like oh thank god. Yeah that's ship. Where i immediately go like right lens back in the driver sees this and that's part of because the comfort of the compass is correct. Yeah and the melodrama of all the young person shit of the young dom ship is like this feels like home and very smash that up against swinging a car like it's a fun morning. Starch happens fifteen minutes into the movie like it's kind of incredible. How quickly they get there. 'cause right it's like this opening then at the house you see dom family life right like he does seem happy content but there is that that weird loneliness there from the fact. That letty later explains like if she's not in the shit she doesn't really feel like she's living right but it's nice to watch their their family unit. It's nice to watch them as parents and all this sort of shit. This has a little bit of a lot from roman but a little bit from everyone sort of like light judging of justification as to be this is why we're still involved in this shit just going to get because the roman thing gets me choked up actually when they get there and i think it's beautiful but the our friends show up in a fucking car right and then just go. Hey we're here here's the gobbledygook or you guys ready to start the plot and its other lynn thing. Where i'm like the exact amount of explanation. I want where they're just like. Here's a mysterious video. Our friend is missing. There's a device it could be the worst weapon in the world. Do you want to go out and stop it or not. And i'm like great. None of this like fuck emission possible rabbit foot shit or the whole movie is playing this game of like what is it right. None of this like over explaining shit right. It's just and no mobile device. It's got two pieces in a code. If you put them together the world ends up that and the other cool thing they do is that. There's no connecting this to other like. Oh well remember what happened at the end of eight. Well because of that blah blah blah. It's like we'll get to it cypher. Ob movie don't worry about it almost identical to the threat in fucking hobbs. And shaw where it's like. Oh there's a virus but there are two parts and then the persons whatever but you're just like get but it's so much less caught up in the cheurfa of everything like understand just like this is truly just a macguffin. Give us the the visual okay. i'd get it. It's an orb. Yeah the to this movie like lives in that video game video game world where it's like get the two components and the code and you've you've won and it's like you found the first component to other component is still to be found. Good luck adventure right now. It's just literally us so we've all seen the trailer. We know that fucking dumps brothers behind this and we know that han still alive right. Those are the emotional stakes. This movie that we're going to be really invested and their life and death stakes but it's like the device is means to an end. We're interested in that. Because jacob toronto's on the other side of that what does that mean for dumb. Let's let's talk about han right now. Because since he just came up..

"What are they doing here and in the movie starts and you go like osha. Justin lin is trying to mirror the look of the first fast and furious. Yup he is shooting like low film. Stock anamour fiqh right like grainy textured. And you're on the fucking raceway and you realize you're watching papa. Toronto doing the rounds right and then one of the first actors you see in this movie. Because he's wearing the helmet. We've talked a lot about puppets ratto casting. In the past. They ended up casting a guy an actor that moment where i was like. Is this going to be the helmet. Gonna come off. And it's going to be fucking like whoever it's going to be. I truly don't is going to be vin diesel and like some sort of like very possible face you recognize in this movie. Is michael rooker playing a fucking pit crew member which must have just made you so god damn happy i was so pumped to see rooker but also to go like. You're doing like days of thunder. Yes you're putting his nose up in his racing. Yeah right right fucking. It's so it's so fun because that just got goosebumps talking about right now because it yes it just feels like they know people love movies like if you like fast now you love movies. Maybe you'll get this little reference. I mean bill. Simmons is in that scene to allegedly and ignore that. But here's what i like about. It also is a pattern that they've had for a long time with these movies. Which is you know when you're adding a new cast member. There's a premium on someone who has their own history with cars in movies right. Yes right like stadium was exciting and was fan demand. Dry because because he's the transporter. It's like you work these people in your like. Oh fuck yes in a car move in a car movie right like even kurt russell he stunt man mike like these yell have some kind of not only carr experienced but like genre overlap. Kind of shit that there's just a canonise to and the movie never calls it out. They don't give any winking line wearing mellow yellow leather jacket or something like that right but it just kind of like well in that same kind of like analog parallel casting. If we're going to set this around like a fucking speedway then you should get a guy who's been a good fucking character actor and a speedway movie before that immediately. I'm just sort of like this is not how i was expecting. The movie to start is very different vibe. I don't know where they're going with this A couple years ago my friend. I think through like three degree connections of like he had a friend who was an internet universal heard from an exact developing the script. Whatever fed me like some details. I had told you as well where i was like. I hear there's a lot of young. Don flashback stuff. It's all about bringing in a brother that we didn't know about before and they're doing the space thing. Yeah and and those were the three things. I knew as of like two three years ago but i wasn't very clear on the specifics of how those things were going to be done or or to. What end didn't know it was going to be satellite last minute rescue right. Tashin roman and likewise. I just sort of imagined like oh. They're reckoning in this brother. There's going to be one sequence or the explain where the brother was. I the one thing. I knew i had a different friend. Who auditioned for kenny. Linder the scumbag racer from the guy from chew blood place right. So he sent me those sides and i read those and i was like oh fuck. They're doing kenny lender. All the names have been changed and the specifics have been changed to try to keep top secret. I read this. Is kenny lender. This is the race. This is the wrench seen immediately was able to identify exactly what it was within the mythology. So that's all. I knew and i was like i imagined there's one scene where they're just going to do. The flashback to the ranch incident you know. Yeah we're to the dad dying or set up the brother or whatever. It was the other thing i had heard. Was that like. Oh the brother thing is going to be sort of revealing him to be the architect of all of this which made me very dubious because you're like worst case scenario. That's the fucking like. Spectre move. That i think sucks where like christoph waltz shows up and he is just like actually. I've been your brother the entire time. Also the last three. John james bond movies didn't really matter they were all just kind of dummy test that i put you through. Yeah i that move. And then there's also the cliche mission impossible move where it's like the people you are working for are actually bad you retroactively ghost protocol or whatever. Those are such standard like six movie for six movie. In the franchise moves so we have a lot of trust in the franchise but also like eight was a knock hubs and shaw was a knock. He's three ideas. On paper. All sound a little bit dodgy like how does this pull off the fact that you get this opening sequence and it is just in isolation the cold open of the worst moment of toronto's entire light and then they cut away. I'm immediately left with like. Oh they're going to like godfather part to this like they're going to keep going back and forth between the timelines which already shows kind of dramatic ambition. That i feel like these movies don't usually have you know. I think it's the sort of like vin. Has this energy where. He's like the football player who joined the drama club. Yes and he's like the eleventh best actor in the cast but there's something special about him and just like movie we're making movie like we're making a show and everyone kind of get around. I'm like this is kind of weirdly inspiring having this and so he makes these like ardi choices. That only someone who's socialist boss. Yes yeah and someone who is so confident in their showing their soft quote unquote soft size. And he's just got that like what he thinks is artistic bone in his body. This movie features a sort of abstract life flashing before meadows is moment where where he walks through his past like he shoulder at the pass a room at different moments of his light. Yeah yeah and that's an it's in fast nine in the same movie instead features at dream a jeep dry vertical on a rope bridge. Two things are in the same fucking movie. And that's the magic and the power in my. That's that's sequences. Like five minutes. Long is nearly wordless. I mean he says nothing just quietly walking into rooms and reliving his trauma. It's incredible ship but like yes that first moment when you cut away from him screaming the car on fire back to just like him at the the getaway house. I sort of went. Okay i like where this is going. I like the way they're setting this up right. I like that. We're having a bifurcated narrative here and that clearly. There's unfinished business there that we're going to go to. You're not just dropping in one scene to read con detail and then then you're in the house right now the familiar p- right here. He is waiting for the first time and the last time it happens in every fast movie are just too great. You're like right everybody's back and then it's like you know and then at the end it's like we did it fam- like those are my favorite moments. It is kind of wild. How many of these movies end with the exact same final set piece which is sit around and picnic table and evacuated in the same backyard. So the one that always completely blown up i. It's another thing that like fate fucked up. Is that the end. Scene is on a fucking like rooftop of a penthouse apartment instead to clear reason and they're not drinking corona makes no sense. It's gotta be a barbecue. Santos arguing about cooking. I love so. I re watched podcast.

"Future of theaters like this is the movie that everyone was leaning forward in their chair and going like if this hits than the movies are back east ring and if not it's fucking done i consider that like the meta of the business of it. All like this is indicative of like okay cool. We can make blockbusters granted a franchise blockbuster but at least not comic book. You know what i mean. This is at least as as absurd as it is to offer this distinction at this point. This is at least an original franchise rather than a franchise based on like this his ip at this point but like a fuck anyone who calls in earnest and be it's not because it looked disfranchised fucking built itself from the dirt. It's like an unwired story right. We've invested in this. Because the shouldn't have been a franchise and all of that argument. It's arguably too many franchises and five locks into a newer style that matches the times more and very like like vin has been very good at and i keep giving vin credit because he puts his name on fi. Comes back hard. Yeah and he does a lot of fucking behind the scenes machinations. And i you give him credit because he's like we're just gonna make it bigger. That's the answer is make the movies bigger. Bang all small about family. The fucking thing. I mean look like like. Erlich like the movie a lot less than i did. Bright give it not his way right. But i thought he'd put it so perfectly and he was saying this. Almost as like this franchise is so weird. I was like yes. You just summed up. Exactly i love about this franchise. Is he said this movie so bizarre. Because it's like the ninth one and it is at the same time unquestionably the most overblown the most absurd. The most ridiculous they go to fuck and space which has been like the thing the whole time right here a bit like the tawdry is when the half to it's inevitable and go to space in a way that you go to space like the fucking movie. The explorers not you think that when they go to space although being spacesuits miss fighting inside like a space to out perfectly no but like great judgment. That's exactly what they should have done. If they went like full fucking like the martian on this i think it would have broken the franchise which is always bring a pontiac into the atmosphere. That still. yeah. I mean my friend who doesn't see. These movies was texting me questions because he was just like. I'm just trying to get like a mental image in my head fair. Does the car still have wheels as it like a spaceship. And i'm like no. It's very much a car doesn't have wheels. It does have a rocket so it has thrust at is steered via the steering wheel and nas all right using us but he was like. It's early simultaneously the most absurd in that sense but also the most granular like vin is like if we're going to go to space. We also have to spend thirty minutes of screen time going back to two days in young dominic toronto's life yeah right and that's and that is. That is the magic of dom because gulf of those of the magic vin. The both of those sound awful on paper. It sounds insane and then you're like i want to put them both in the same movie and by the way those are two of one set pieces in your wait why i want to dig into this game but i the stat that i only just realized this box office nerd because like other movies that have been doing well in the pandemic all had weird hybrid releases in some way right like tenant was the one that didn't and really underperformed and was in theaters for fucking five months made far less than christopher nolan movies. Should more people have definitely wash. Hbo max and then since then things have been successful have been like khan vs godzilla. And what have you where it's like on. Hbo max the same day. A quiet place had a good opening is is doing well was the first new movie to make one hundred million dollars cross that line but also like that's part of this deal where everything's going on paramount plus after forty five days. How well people know that. How it's been communicated i don't know f nine is like complete old school theatrical release. Here's the movie. it's only in theaters. When can you see it at home. I don't know when we feel like it as soon as it's done making money here you'll hear about a dvd release date right right. And then i'll just be available in the ways you can watch movies before we're not putting this thing on your fucking lap right yeah. Vod and whatever you want. It had the biggest opening weekend since. Rise of skywalker. So not only. Is it the biggest thing since the pandemic but like plus the three months before i was just say plus a little bit of time. Yeah plus sonic the hedgehog plus bad boys three like other movies that were widely wildly successful. You know it was a big opening. But when i saw and i texted you no spoilers but just a couple of things i want. You know one of the first things i said to you camera which i had the text there with you david because we were like we did our too fast episode the day after we were originally record that night and i said guys we have to reschedule. Because i got invited to see david and i more understanding than it sounds like you got it. I was like. I need this guys. But i can't remember which thing i said to just david which ones i said to both of you and the texture whatever the two things first of all david incredible universal logo modification. We're dorks for anytime you change the logo saying and action boys. We talk about that all the time. Some of them so bad still so fun. One the second thing. I said to you i said gabor's there's a casting in this. That is going to make you so fucking happy. In terms of the referential reality of why. They're using that actor in that position. And i bring these things up because the fucking open of this movie of just classic early nineties universal logo right going with the grain immediately. Go what why..

"He hits on something. There's always someone motion thing for him. You know that it's about. And I feel like he makes. This is the other thing. He's a real dork. He makes very dorky choices. He likes the idea of epic storytelling. He likes things having this like soap opera saga. He loves a sound. He loves giant EMOTIONAL ARCS and shifts, and you look at the fast and furious franchise and how? Wild the swings are in each movie. The things they set up the debt Har- fantasy right, but you go deaths are. Mason Tame knee-jerk. ooh, I, guess I'm GonNa tell you off my. Thrilling but but I think it's a guy who as much as he understands. You have to play the franchise game. He's not making strategic obvious choices in terms of story, and he definitely is meddling in that story. And I remember reading this in his toes, and that he's sticking his toes in pond. Rolling Stone does a piece on rampage. The Rock movie with a Gorilla Yeah Yeah. And they said Naomi. Justice rely on me. Harris Who's really good in that movie Jeffrey Dean Morgan? Though he's really good very good I. Think about him a lot in grey's anatomy, he is a good editor. is any the ghost? The fucks Katherine heigl original. He's I a man. He was once. A locker becomes a ghost and they don't fuck when he's a ghost. Oh, part of the whole thing is that she has sex with him as a ghost. No, but it's like A. Wait a minute. Okay, well, we'll. Off Michael's I go back to their own episode. Fuck when he's alive though. because. In the bed part of the reason, they fought out. Because it's like she had connection with. Those episode is very good. He's very good at it. I cried. My. Rolling Stone Ramp rampage and they talk about home. The scriptures written the gorilla dies at the end. And the Rocco's every gorilla movie ends. Yeah, you can't, counter mighty Joe. Young And the Rocco's absolutely not full, and the writers and the director make the case to him narrative Y. It's justified once the emotional ending. And he said you don't understand. I've spent twenty years building up a brand. The Rock is a promised to an audience that I'm not gonNA. Make you think about difficult things like a giant gorilla dying, but it, but it's so telling. He really showed himself in that moment. He said I'm telling people. When I put my name on a movie. I'm shaking their hand on promising them. They're only going to have a good time. You know he's about to run for Republican. Yes, yes. But also he doesn't understand that. It's good to be sad. Sometimes, you're never going to really feel unless you're leading the whole tapestry of human emotion. Come Yeah! The Rock did not have emotional Dano and Vin does and sometimes he swings and misses, but at least least one, and it's always coming for an emotional space, and this is where the whole thing starts to coalesce from you to is. He's one of the first guys to really be on social media. He's tip of the spear on facebook. He often says it should be called Vin book because he made facebook popular and he's posting stuff regularly about. His his fantasies and he post the video. That was my favorite single favorite thing on the Internet. The thing I sent the two of you in the twitter threat that says this is the cornerstone of my argument. That Vega video him karaoke in his own home singing stay by Rana multiple camera angles multiple camera angles. The music video projected behind on his bond him. That's kind of the beautiful to me. He's wearing a suit with no tie sunglasses on indoors lights off, and he's singing it there is no, it is not a joke. It is not joke. Carioca is really this is his say by Riana. And he says happy. vide me more. It's Valentine's Day video. He posted the next day. It blows up and he said my agents told me not to do this, but I know my true Paloma happy. Happy Vida, his wife, who has never seen she doesn't have to be doesn't hurt. We know her last name is humanist. That's enough. I have heard Vin. Diesel has his home setup so that in any room? There is a wireless microphone that he can pick up. And play through a stereo system. Karaoke tracks key wants us as he puts it he. LOVES TO SING. And to think I thought I'd been living in homes have really been living in vessels. That's a that's a home. That's a house, not home. Okay until it's got multiple Mireles. Yes Mike's White, but to all these things have just him being so like as as much as he is a movie star Bill to brand, and he is built I mean truly a sense of iconography in terms of the visual looks of India's on the sound in diesel. The types of things that vin diesel does I think he takes. That, you thought you. Could Send A. I will show you, but when I when I argue him, the people that is the word I feel like I have to use because it's like that guy knows how he plays on camera. There's no one live better at being in movies. Their people as good as him. But I don't think anyone's better. And no one had a work. Their instrument that make it pop on a silver screen. That my boy Vinnie Dis all right, but someone like Tom Cruise is never going to post a video of himself to carry Okey. A flip phone, if you if you even posted a video of Tom Cruise Doing Karaoke, the you'd get take out. Yeah, like someone would come in. "The point I was trying to make was just that I feel like even if. The pacifier is is viewed as a classic at this table. I think at the time. It seems to Cinderella Story in terms of Oh my God. Listen when we do a hillary out. Come on, we know is happening. Bitch. Let the rainfall down because my ass is coming clean. Okay you. Sanity, I wanNA feel the thunder bitch I wanNA scream. I have. I did at the time. Oh, yes. I saw. Jimmy E. About? Record Cooler. He brought. Where's your governors? For that for that matter. When she gets time. I'll put it exclusively clips. Cinderella Story and yes I will have dividends of being an editor. At that point. Shaken. Variety TV editor. I think it's an iron that have dreamed. No I'm single. Positive I was saying with odd I was staring off in the distance going. On an Editor we've gone down a whole accurate, but I feel like at the time it came out to go in less than five years from fast and furious to pacify. Was Seen As. Oh, this guy's going into self parody too fast. The Rock than flips it where the rock is like I'm going to be the kid comedy star before becoming a legitimate action star, so the whole rule book goes out the window but I think he does that movie, even a big hit kind of fucks up his career. Because then he's really gone. He does finally guilty with city. Lamont which I think he's great in, and no one watches because they think it's ridiculous that he has hair in it. Out But. It is a really good movie directed by the man who brought us network as twelve angry men, in which it's about the longest criminal trial in new. York history. and it's this mobster who decides to represent himself good movie. Good performance, but then he's just like fucking out. This guy's done. The movies are flopping. Fast and furious franchise at this point. They've done to him big hit, so they're like we don't fuck in need you, but then they get cocky and then they go. What if we don't need anybody? What if the name is the thing? It's just the cars on the post and. Drift right so you got actors in that, but none of them are on the poster. None of them above the title. They're just selling the cars and that's a big dip. Yeah, so these things are even know the album. For Tokyo Drift is pop and the movie rules. Yeah, don't run the movie rules. Hot Hot will justice Vermont, but there's a big box office step, so then Babylon. D comes out. And at this point, I haven't been thinking about for a couple of years. And the AV club rights review with be most cutting line. I have ever seen a film review. Which is They're describing the movie. And then they go like you know whatever the characters name is, and then parentheses played by VIN diesel, who for younger readers was briefly movie star? In the early two thousands? Oh and the year of this review is two thousand. That is fucking brutal, so I see that line. I just go time death. He's cooked on what a shame! He could have been member thinking that guy had potential. Right Oh, my God. That her, so mean the very next year universal decides to go out on one last one. That's right. They think. Maybe we can just milk one last night for a little while they're like is a direct to video thing. They're like no, let's do theatrical. Let's do one last one and I go see a movie I. Forget what, but the trailer comes up fast an percent furious the four reboot. Off reboot. Yes, what is also kind of a reset? Yeah, and the trailer is like misdirect where you're seeing a heist on a freeway, and you don't know who it is so I go pretty good action, and then the ski mask. Come off, and you see Michelle, Rodriguez and vin diesel, and suddenly I felt chills down my spine. I went wait. This was not a franchise I thought I cared about what's going I day really made you care again and from four to now four names come up in the trailer. They go VIN diesel Paul Walker Michelle Rodriguez. I'm I forgetting Jordana Brewster. That's why you're forget. Brief lapse in memory, but Also dirty. I'm sure. But then the tagline. On you sure. This is my favorite franchise. And I guess I forgot the Vin diesel is my favorite movie star and every year, since then it's just double, but that's the activation known for me where all the pieces came together and yeah. NOBODY USA I was GONNA say. When does the ROCK ENTER THE FAST? It's fast five fast. For the next one, the rock shows up wrecked and a two thousand two sides of a coin right kind of and I am someone who I I really value the sanctity of a movie theater. Yes, you know I like audience involvement, but still everyone has to be on their best behavior I'm not somebody WHO's trying to get funny jokes out yelling at the spring that but I see fast five opening night time square and the moment, when after they both lost friends and family on their respective sides shootout from a third party. "So some. Universal Universal backlot. Does go and the guy over the intercom. SAY LIKE SURP- sir. You're not gonNA want yeah and. They just thought it was a show. Yeah, that's too bad too bad. Okay so I, see the first fast and furious movie. Yes, I go. You know not necessarily my cup tea, then pretty undeniable. That Guy's movie star the next year. Drag my father. See Triple X.. He's like I hate this. That's the worst movie I've ever seen and you say I'm like I. You know not I don't love it, but I like vin diesel i. like something about Vin Diesel, but this is a big moment were vin diesel starts to franchises and abandoned both of. Very like fast and furious off to the races, and he's like I'm good. I'm done greener pastures. Got What I want it and then jumps on triple X.. Everyone's a great new franchise. This is your one. He's like absolutely not I'm Outta here. Smell you later, so this is sort of the wilderness period where he's doing like he was all in on chronicles of Riddick. Yeah, which I didn't see at the time because it just felt like. I felt like a very odd choice to have two franchises. The public told you they wanted to see continue, but there's also something to the excess of the early two thousand s that like very that I. Get yes, and it also foes lot of French, also like you know feels like the formula. The work you know I want a franchise. I got to come bright, and that's also. It's kind of the CELONA log where it's like. Oh, he's like Rambo and he's is rocky and he's going back and forth between the two. WHOLE TIME! He's like triple X. Fast and furious. My Skin isn't in the game. These aren't personal for me. Riddick I feel some ownership of and now that I'm a star. I'm going to bring riddick back and do it on a bigger scale and his whole thing because he's like this big fantasy nerd Vin diesels and playing the Sony fucked. Dragon. Since, he was thirteen, he was like pitch black. That's the hobbit now get ready for my Lord of the Rings. These are the chronicles of Riddick motherfuckers, so he goes all in. They give them all the money. Saying director huge like Faulk, an some are opening date and it just it just goes nowhere goes nowhere bombs in. And then it's like what does he do after this does the pacifier? Okay so see so. Here's where we have. Thank you sure. Where we come in. As people, who? When does the pacifier come out? Two thousand, five or six. We were I think it's five ten. On. Over. Into, the theater I've seen that movie perhaps five times in my life. Sleepovers. Over me, do the Peter Pan To dance that in my brain. That movie is really like lodged in there for people I think like our A. Where indies? It's unlike wait a minute. This guy's got something yeah. I think he is fun in that movie and I will say than the Rott- copied because. So here's who various fair game. But let's. How John Lee doing a similar? Where it's like Oh, a big strong man will next to a little girl. That'll be funny right and it's like I. Don't know now. We have to acknowledge the model they're working off of. Is Kindergarten cop? Yes, the first like Oh you take tough action guy. You put him with kids in a comedy. You everything seen and half. That's like you know the following right. You know what is competent. It's Burt Reynolds movie. Kid I have a little black. It is he's. He's got an Alex and I got an Alex Jay and I will say. He's not very good at it. Bert Bert the kids to start. Kids an absolute star Colin half not great the Kid I'm like we need. Where's the kids like this? Tremblay is dead. COMEDIC, timing that? Trump like. Didn't you like glad good boys I just know my I mean molly. Molly. And everyone I know who seemed good boys like I left. It's it's gives you a laugh or two because you laugh, but that kid who's in golfing half. Probably. Don't know higher. Yeah, and unfortunately he stopped acting now. He's a rapper. Is this true? Look them up. Yeah, I like him. Hoped did well, but I knew that he didn't. I once thought I had come up with a perfect pitch for a broad studio comedy was so excited and started writing, and then realized it was cop and a half. It's I thought I had independently come up with well. They did a reboot of cop and a half. With Lou.

"Okay. A different. Designed to be Walker offense to pretty too much pretty pretty much. And also right. Yeah, you need both. We need to question. You need a question. You need also somebody who people are like I like. This guy is see what well wait a minute. I guess La. Well a little like him. But van comes in pretty late because Timothy have to back out. Passed, he passed. He was already. This is point break like I think so, and then like sought. Yes, like a bunch of executives were like look. We just saw like the strings of this movie pitch black. We think this guy is gonNA pop. And they like sold sold sold. The director agrees to meet with him. Thin meets with him. He's like okay, so tell me why you want me in your movie. it's just he's doubling down on this thing of just like. Wow, I know it's going to happen. It's inevitable I don't need to play your fucking game why? I'm like I. CAn't find the words like so in awe, and he just takes that movie and he fucking runs with it. Runs with it and he is. He hits the nature of He. And, he is so fucking good in that first movie I love him and all the movies but sick. Because, he becomes so much of like a movie star. Cartoon Representation of this guy in tandem with the franchise becoming silver crank pin for getting the first one. He's giving like a real like actors studio. Performance. Given like good Brando and he's got his fucking quarter-mile at a time speech. That is like I. Mean that is what you build a franchise upon damn. You know you've got this moment. That crystallizes this fucking thing and it more. It's like Oh. This is going on for year. That's the thing you could always come back to. A solid thesis statement. Yeah, it's like and I think it's the the family thing. He starts to really hit on later. Although obviously, the first one is so much about his relationship with his sister, but I think the family thing becomes a little more dominant leader films, the thing I think they lock into in that scene is how deftly he underplays it, and how intimate that scene becomes, and how much the fast and furious movies are about emotional intimacy, especially between men. Between Mouse specially between it's only like the masculine. Masculinity of cars that allow. You like actually were very close. When you betray, one of US hurts real in really France, and that's where the love familiar thing ties in where it's like you and understand I'm like I'm negating any homophobic reading this by telling you. We're familiar. This is not that and I feel like. In the early days, people used to make a lot of homophobic jokes about the fast and furious franchise needs to be look. Just feels like these guys are looked about to fuck at any moment and I think. Thankfully with time, culture's come around to being like no, this is a very progressive thing. Fees are not movies that are sort of like sub textually gay. These are movies that are about people being very emotionally intimate well. Yeah, yeah, whether it's family whether it's your lover's whether it's your friends. You know it's about if you know, it feels like to get behind the wheel of a car. And I should mention at this point. I do not have a driver's license. I'm terrified. Perfect sorry sorry to scoot. Can She tell you something else? You're working on it yeah, I'M GONNA. Shake your hands lie, because we both I guess if you're working on it then I feel. Like maybe you're gonNA. Know what? I! Really don't know at this point. Okay, because it. It's actually the process of getting a license in California your by cone. Stone is actually very difficult and the dmv really jumped shading long and I've been backwards much that it's actually really hard. Finding time to practice I went one time to a DMV in Santa. Clarita California and I got so stressed out about putting together all the documentation. I needed that I walked out, and I just said I'm never going to do this. Ever tried to streamline the process by making, and this is sort of what people come to this podcast. Let's. Try to streamline the process waking a good portion of it online and digital, but even then you still have to bring in all these documents and I know that I have them. Here's. My thing is that we all have to these fucking driver's license for the PSA. As well I have to get a New York driver's license I think which is going to be like a whole saying well, here's what I did I got. My passport recently I got the passport card. which already has. And I know that. Why should get the really dramas? anyways, but it will me time with the MVP. Anyway driver's licenses man you guys. Don't get it I. don't Care Well I. Kind of get it, 'cause. I learned how to drive by. Working on a show on NBC lot okay my co were take me out during lunch and they would me drive through the lot. Car Golf Cart Oh well. I started with the golf cart, okay. I went to SUV, and then that worker was pregnant, and every said Stop Teaching I. Oh, how to drive and she? Looking for sure, then, my worker shout Dan Dan Climb. Who taught me how to drive basically? took Nice, little car that was like small and good size van thing to learn, and then I basically would drive through, and he'll be like no go this way, and he would switch it up, and then I would drive past the jaws parking through the desperate housewives lane and on wisteria lane. And I'll go pass the good plays and you ever like intercept a backlot. I Wouldn't intercept it because he was a stop. Let it go by because he knew why. We'd have to navigate that fully, and I think that was corrective him. I was once on I. I love Universal Studios theme park, and every time I go, which is pretty much every time I go to La i. do the backlot tour. Happily. But one of the recent times I went on it. Because it is. It's an active backlot for people who don't know and it's also a theme park I have this little tramp- tour. If you've ever done it and you see like tired, people walk around. That's me. That's me. They're writing on sunnyside. The writer's room on these air like what's going to happen with this show? Real. Probably probably but. The tram was going through. There's a part of the tour where they like. Do A riff on the splitting of the Red Sea from the Ten Commandments. It's not a proper. It's even it's like a little. It's very little. It's very little, but it switched open the weather and stuff how? Okay, so there's like a little I. Don't know what you see. It's like a little swamp almost and they're like. Oh, no an interim Arlington! You're coming in from Rochester having a great time. Backed into a corner. How are we going to get Outta this? In the words of Charlton, Heston let the mainland the my people through whatever I've forgotten the line, but then the the C. splits, and the tram goes through right, and the last time I went on it or one of the last times I went on. There was a do just driving through the backlot. Probably, Dan Klein letting someone else drive his car, so they could learn to say and they were like. Oh, I'm going to take this same pathway. They didn't understand. It's a rigged show thing so the water close back on.

"He's goodness. He's getting. It but I'm saying the time the. Place to place. I mostly only recommended as a vin diesel. Because it's that early character actor Vin state. That's what's interesting. Yes, he did kind of start out as a character. Do you know how he got his break? Multiracial? Yes, multi facial a short that he created himself about being. Confused about his ethnicity, a lot of. People not knowing how to cast. You think he has a white man of color. White Man of a man of color. He's just a man of. He just doesn't know who his dad is, but he knows that like these black black bright, and not any, and he had a black stepfather growing up like that's how I thought yeah, yes, he grew up in a very mixed family with the stepfather and a half sister. He has a biological twin brother. He didn't know his father His stepfather was a future professor. And so he was sort of like a Jason to the theater scene, but he has like that's not what I'm about. I'm about break, dancing and graffiti. And the story that he presents is that he and some friends broke into. A space to try to vandalize. It threw up some tags and it turned out. It was a theater. Thank God and rather thank God getting angry reporting on these street toughs. The owner of the. Why don't you come acting? Wow, extended the hand and then got the bug. This is the magic of the. Leader is that's magic to do you know against Pippen, so? He's like a theater guy. He's auditioning all the time, but no one knows where to place him what he is. What type he is doesn't really exist, so he makes multi facial, which is his short film about not knowing how to get cast I voice TV. Spielberg says a minute sees the film Akon Vin goes to con-. Imagining Young Vignette Con. It is maybe the greatest thing like does he speak French like it? Does he try? Yeah I'll be at the best trip of his life absolute. I'm sure he did because the result was still booby. Do BOOB BE? Wait. Sorry. Hold on, hold on. Hold on your. Hollywood, we gotta put pause on saving pr because that he's got to rewrite the script. Put Vin de open up a space we got. We got to make space for vent yeah. But the other thing that's happening around this time he he makes a feature film called strays. That is okay. It is very much post multi facial, which is such of just like her Shnell like the primal scream strays is very much. A strategic makes the rights Iraq. And it's very much a strategic I want to show people the way I'm a movie star. Yay As opposed to the very personal expression. Thing it's it's fine. It's fine. He makes that. He has a serious I mean at this time like the years the wilderness he's working as a bouncer. One of my favorite videos on Youtube because I'm a real connoisseur videos is he worked at the New York toy fair where they would have struggling actors do the showcases of the toy products to buyers from big box stores, and there's a video of VIN diesel in a leather vest, a demonstrating that years line of street sharks action figures well which for listeners who might remember street sharks. It was the Post Ninja Turtles. What if sharks were tough and roam the streets? Walk they walk legs and the really big bright. Skinny legs big upper bodies. Scars Ideal Man. They're kind of Proto VIN diesel. Took a look at that body. I've got some thoughts riff on this body like twenty-five VIN diesel with one earring in a leather vest, really hot to me smashing these action figures together, and at one point he refers to a character as a round mountain to pound. Thank you, which is on Mount Her Hound. Take that theater cloud. That's play I'm just establishing some footnotes for example extended, you know. After the episode second screen experience, pull up some of these. This is good. Okay, so he makes strays. He gets them private. Ryan he does giants right I enjoy. It happens and all this stuff sitting around the same time boiler room. He gets cast a play one of the henchman I, think for. Gary sinise. Reindeer. Games clough. Torres Lee bad. Like everyone involved with disowned. And John Frankenheimer director says so in this scene I. Want you to have your shirt off. You come in. You're like intimidated Ben. Affleck and Vin diesel says no I'm not GONNA do that. and He John Frankenheimer said what do you mean and Vin diesel said? and. I found this out years later and I think I was converted onto at this point, but if there was a moment where it was just clear, I was GonNa ride or die for this guy? This is the story. Vince says John Frankenheimer I only take my shirt off for Vin. Diesel Movies Holy Shit Right. God and that's incredible so good and he says what the fuck are you talking about? Like call your shot. It was just like the point eight. That's crazy right and he's notorious. The Guy has kick started his career after years of being unhittable being supporting actor after making a short film about how no one knew how to cast him, and now he's saying none enough I. Know I'm a movie star I. Normally, man, I'm saving something Special I. God I only take my shirt offer vin diesel movies and he's like you either. Take your shirt off, or you're fired. VIN diesel gets fired from reindeer game. Wow, and then you know hitch black. Of these? Movie. That's what he meant. Hagans takes his shirt off. Like happens within two months. He said buy. Bitch Riddick Yeah see you later Toronto me. So, then fasten I two thousand one right and it really. Off to the races. This is when he starts to get on my radar because my brother and I are both going off to sleep away camp. My mom drops off. The movie theater says you can see one movie together. You have to decide what it is and I'm going hard for Dr Doolittle two. And my brother James He really wants to see fast and furious. Dome Boy Shit cars. I don't want to see this. Just want to chuckle. I want to check in with the Doctor A. You to make an appointment my yearly checkup. Okay. But I sit there and I watched this movie. He wins the argument. My brothers very persuasive. And at the end the movie I go. This. Movie starts. Can I say something that shows me that nothing's more important than familiar. I'm just what I I mean I wouldn't even. Her brother had a nice Rona. Yes. No eleven and thirteen. Legal most. At fast and furious children's. Corona sure. But. Fast and I I am furious. Is Universal was all in on Paul Walker and they were like we want to develop a vehicle around. You can be anything you want. And he finds this article about l., A. Street racing, and then like, but I don't feel confident being the guy in a movie I'd only want to make this happen if it's a two hander, so they go. Oh Great! We know exactly what to do. It's you and it's so clear who the other movie star is! It's Timothy Elephant..

"It's one or the other. The other one knows, and neither does he. He's trying to figure. That's the power baby. Gory on so high. I loved. Molly is like has been stone for thirty years. One also him being on this awards run winning all these awards going all these press rooms. You realize how infrequently he does on camera interviews. So. We're not usually see him. Talk for a couple of minutes. And then you let them loose on an award stage in oppressed by. unstructured the most charming man why he is what he's. Yeah? But, but we also acknowledge that he has an incredibly talented from afraid you must. People don't like to talk about performance says so again. You have to give him the words. Industry the performer. No one thinks about the people who are readiness, do you do you know? Do you know what are you? Do you know what the Coen brothers looked like? Yes, well, some people don't. That's I mean of course I. You know I know. Some people don't know that they look you know like like that. which also visit totally the same? No people might think. Oh, brothers, they look the same. No one is bold. And that's the shocking. All balden short one is tall there and they sort of have. The. Coloration yes, interesting, one of them has dark, longer hair, and the other one is balding with a beard and has reddish hair. Yeah. Can I say it makes you wonder if they're brothers well. Do We know I? Don't think it's off top of head. I know which one tall is in which one short is talent worth even short as tall as Joel Right. Is Francis. Joel and Ethan is. His Beard Hey. Hey, what I think. He has a lovely wife. I sat behind them at the film forum once. What were you seeing you said? Forms of the film. On them, I sat behind. Colin at Film Forum. Hundred it was it was. It was now trying to remember I. WanNa say was a Preston sturges movie. It was a screwball comedy. Says Lord he's been married to him TRICIA Cooke since one thousand nine Tricia. Just like no I love. Why won't? Senator, she's an editor. FESCUE okay. Have you seen hells pop in. No, you should see that okay it was. Did you just see it phone forms that were thinking of it? Okay, it's actually on Youtube really yeah. You should see hells poppin. Okay, should. Get into. Well we've been Gavin Yeah we've been gavin straight. We've been popping. Even we've been popping off was each other, but we need to pop off on one man. I. Okay, let's not this up because we reach out to griffin awhile ago Griffin. Who would you want to do well? I believe I I WANNA say yeah. Isolating the just go, we reach out. I've been listening to this show. I love it. I just want to extend I said wow. And then you're like I would do this person if I was on. Yeah, just throw out into the atmosphere I'm always ready to talk about them. And then you send us a very important video. A we should say Vin. Diesel indies the talk about today. Is Mark Vincent's Sinclair Birth. Name Yes The. Lord knows him as When he gets up to those pearly gates when he gets to Saint Peter's and the squirrel US Open. He'll say Vin then. Many Guy, you'll save an easel himself, my guy. I guess he he is my favorite. Movie Star. Okay, interesting that you say movie star not. Yes think there is a delineation. Yes, and I do think Vin diesels. A good actor and there are actors who I would rank higher as my favourite living actors who I also think are good movie stars I. Don't think the things are mutually exclusive. Sometimes they are, but I think you're Brad Pitt. Your term cruises complicated math. Complicated, but those guys you're talking about who kind of secretly are sort of character actors. Yes, maybe a little Tommy Thomas Bradley. No, he's a he's A. He's a character and certainly William. Willie likes to play a character likes to. A little hitch is full method. Math I didn't realize that was the fifth time I watched. That movie I didn't recognize the Pierre's disappears. You know what's crazy I. assumed it was prosthetics I said this must be like a a Rick Baker. Thing and then I found out. It's like Bradley. Cooper and the elephant man. He just did visit Godley. Yeah, but you don't recognize him in that movie but then I think is a perfect example of what a movie star is with the power of being a movie star is both in terms of what he does and movies, and what he does surrounding his movie. You're telling the Rock to take notes. I mean I'm going to go off on the Rock in this episode because I think the only way you can explain what is important and special and valuable and dare I say brilliant about Vin diesel is to throw some shade on the Rock. I think you have to, and it's not just because of the feud. Also we're GONNA. Have to talk about because obviously, I was obsessed with. Has Gone Back. It like you came out, and it was like okay, we'll singer t this, not just that they have this history, not just that they have this feud, but also i. do think they are opposite sides of the same point. And a thesis I'm going to present here. Will loop back around to it later is that I think for our generation? The analog is that VIN diesel is stallone and the Rock is Schwarzenegger. Whereas I think okay been diesel has improved upon the stallone formula and The rock has missed a very key come out of the Schwarzenegger formula, so they're not even at the same level. Yes, I am out of work and I'm GonNa Talk Shit about the most bankable fucking movie star in Hollywood is the positive do. This is the positive. Okay okay, so we have so much to talk about Let's start with. When did you realize was guy? It took a while. I mean truly because I remember my first exposure vin diesel was the iron giant. A classic a Big Tuna. billion. Perfect film creep performance. People don't talk about that as a performance that off He was pretty much on known actor. I I'll say veal is hard. Yeah, veal is really is. Is Iron giant before or after Private Ryan? It's after Private Ryan Right. It is the following year. It's ninety nine private Ryan's ninety eight. Yes, and pitch black is earlier in ninety nine. That's that initial run where he's starting to pop. Pop Off, but I was such animation kid in such a like behind the scenes, kid that I was watching all the like behind the scenes making of stuff, so I was seeing this guy in this booth and video booth, wearing sunglasses, whose name is vin diesel and sounds like that? Yes, and I just went like palm. Okay, remember that for later. This dixon my mind flash forward two years. Two thousand one. Don't see prime when I come theaters. Okay, so that doesn't make the impression on me. Don't see boiler room when it first comes out in.
