"That moment, UM is picking up in the job market, which also saw the biggest boost in the services sector in nearly 2.5 years. Economists project that private payrolls rose by 800,000 employees in April. Washington's payroll protection program has run out of money weeks before it was set to expire. And Michigan's radical governor, Gretchen Whitmer wants to shut down an oil and gas pipeline under the Great Lakes to appease her green allies. But Canada is fighting that closure, saying it will choke off supplies of heating oil for huge numbers of people living in Ontario and Quebec. Widmer like President Biden seems to have no problem. Biden Administration: Police Reform and Gun Control

"Kristen. Where does the white house think they can make progress on police reform or on gun regulation so taking both of those issues. Chuck i on police. Reform the white house's pushing for the george floyd bill which passed the house to pass the senate. That is a bill that would make it easier to prosecute police misconduct. It would pour resources into training. Police there is a bipartisan effort. To try to move that forward no progress though same thing as it relates to gun. They're urging congress to act on two bills that would expand background checks that passed the house. They want the senate to act the reality though chuck while those two things are stalled. Q&A: What Are Some Good Ways to Repurpose Content?

"My question is are there any rules against using your blog posts in more than one location. It seems like a lot of trouble to write for a blog create social updates and enter the world of multimedia my ideal situation would be just to create the content in general and then repurpose it in different mediums. But what's the best way to do that. It seems there are different formats and best practices for each one. So i'm not sure. How much editing will be required and is this something i should do on my own or get some outsource help with looking forward to your response. Hey lisa thank you so much for the question. So i think i know the first part of your question. Are there any rules against it. Not at all no rules against it in fact you should do it. It's a good thing to find a way to work once and then use that work multiple times. At least as long as you can do it in a way that makes sense at least as long as you haven't promised exclusive content to some particular platform or network but generally speaking yes. You can absolutely do this now. As a disclosure. I don't think i do this very well. I was thinking about this. Like looking at gretchen. Rubin longtime friend and mentor to me. She is incredibly prolific and yet somehow also does a good job of multi purposing content in a natural way. I see a lot of her work in lots of different places and it's similar you can see some things excerpted and you can see okay. She posted this year. Maybe a longer version of it here or something but it all works worked really well. John aikoff another friend. He's also good at this Lots of other people too. I just mentioned those two. Because i am not an expert but i do understand a concept. I in fact i was talking with john recently. He said he's been trying a service called monday. Dot com which is not a sponsor notation. You just mentioned them because he said it's been helping him out with scheduling post to various networks which solves a lot of time solves a lot of coordination with his virtual assistant there other platforms like that as well. Buffer dot com later dot com. Do some similar things Now that doesn't saw the editing issue right for that you need to find the right format for all the platforms you planned to published

That state deals with a huge surge in cova crisis at least one michigan hospital the mclaren port huron hospitals at one hundred percent capacity as of this morning chief medical officer. The michigan health and hospital association said today they expect the number of hospitalizations in the state to beat last fall's peak to head up higher than they have ever been before during the crisis at all. This is the daily new reported coronavirus cases in michigan. Right now there are dozens of states that are having covid case numbers spike across the country but michigan is by far the worst. Still though even in light of that today. The white house confirmed again that they're not planning to send an extra allocation of vaccines to to michigan. That is what governor gretchen. Whitmer is asking for to try to get michigan's crisis under control. The white house says they will send other resources to michigan to try to help but not additional vaccine supplies when you have an acute situation Extraordinary number of cases like we have in michigan. COVID-19 Spreading 'Like Wildfire' in Michigan

"Spreading like wildfire. It's breaking their hearts were exhausted. Emotionally hospital admissions jumping nearly 30% in the upper Midwest. In just the past week, the CDC ranking Michigan the number one hot spot in the country and hospitals feeling the strain some patients facing 8 to 10 hour wait times those hospitalized, shifting away from now vaccinated older Americans to those unvaccinated younger adults. Now we're seeing that kind of 40 to 59 age group is the largest group that's getting infected. Certainly certainly seeing some Children. They're getting l. But it's really that young adult population that's driving a lot of the cases. So for us this surge is bigger than it was a year ago, doctors say, driving the surge, a mix of reduced restrictions, pandemic fatigue and the UK variant, which now accounts for 70% of the new cases in Michigan. The federal government now sending Michigan more personnel to administer vaccines. The governor Gretchen Whitmer, doubling down that our state needs more shots when there is a surge. We think that it's important that we we go toe we rush in to meet where that need is across the country. The supply of Johnson and Johnson

The Bite administration has said no, reportedly claiming the state is not efficiently allocating the vaccine that it has received. Governor Whitman responded to that charge on CBS's face The Nation. Anti-Racist Science Education

"All right today in the show. We're unsmiling what's not working in science education around representation and racism and how to teach science in a more inclusive way and idea from listener and scientists esther kunle yes so thanks to esther. We went looking for k. Through twelve teachers teaching at the intersection of science and racial justice at all grade levels. And i want to start with. Let me see a fears. She's a post doctoral fellow in the collaborative for stem education. And outreach vanderbilt okay. She's a black scientist. Helping out in science classrooms in tennessee. Among fifth graders at this one particular school she is a total rockstar to walk into a classroom. And they'll be like dr. Yeah it's me. It's me everyone you know know autographs thing. We lit up each others world. Our saying that let me see a drops into fifth seventh and eighth. Grade science classrooms like a real life. Miss frizzle okay. I'm not kidding. You she wheels the cart between classes clattering with beakers and different very interesting looking chemicals and students. They're so intrigued. They run up to her on our like number my wife just all that stuff and then when she's in the classroom let me see a doesn't just help them run experiments. She'll also delve into the ethics of designing an experiment. Okay she'll talk about how wrong. The tuskegee study was which is win. Scientists studied syphilis in black men and withheld treatment. Sushi's like introducing bioethics to kids as important part of the curriculum. Yup scientists are presented as very human herself included and her students can totally handle these conversations. We see what's happening with this generation with them protests. And they're speaking out and they're not having it they're not gonna they're not going to allow us to continue to destroy her and her point is that if science teachers can tap into that compassion and that curiosity and show the way that scientists have messed up. Kids might take up an interest in science. I love it and if we can't do that then we are gonna lose on. And i think it's hard were minority kids. They already don't see themselves as the teacher or the prisoners doing the science so that already kind of puts up a block of well. That's just what the old white main with crazy hairdo and so another thing. Let me see a does is named drop scientists of color as often as possible. She'll talk about astrophysicist. Did eisler medical physicist hadean ecole green astronauts. Joseph akaba and jeanette epps. She designed paper rocket lesson around them and this helps kids develop a mental picture of a career in stem beyond a doctor or a dentist. This is so cool because it's not just about teaching science history right. It's also helping. Students see themselves as scientists and for gretchen craig. Turner the next teacher. I want to introduce you to this. Level of engagement becomes even more important as students get older and start to get into their teenage years and develop their own opinions their own opinions about science. Yeah to be critical of it. Oh yeah that was not in my k. through twelve science education hers either. I don't remember a lot of writing or Opinions being part of science in fact it was very much i believe taught. The opinions didn't belong in science right that it was supposed to be a

Hustle chris this is carol and i just recently found your show from the happier podcast. I've been seeing lots of stories about mom instagram irs. I guess they're the new mommy bloggers. Anyway it's a strange world. And i started going down the rabbit hole. The follow some of them. I found a lot of people with tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of followers. Do they mostly get paid for hawking products. And how much do they get paid. I'm not sure he wanted to do this myself. And the politics behind. It seem even stranger than all the posts about home furnishings. I'm mostly curious if this is even a viable idea looking forward to hearing from you all right. There's a lot we could say about this. So let me try to be on point here. And i thank you so much carol for the question So glad you found this show from happier. I'm a big fan of happier. Podcast with gretchen rubin gretchen has been a friend in many ways. A mentor to me. For many years. I've learned so much from her. Continue to admire oliver. Work all right. Let's talk about this interesting strange world here. I love how carol phrases this is it a viable idea. Well the whole point of school in many ways is to show that they're a tremendous number of viable ideas that most people would never have considered basically. We've looked at all sorts of random topics so in that sense. It is viable in the sense that some people have been able to do quite well with it. I'll come to that in a moment. So a big part of me thinks well more power to you. You know like if you're able to figure this out in great why not but. I also think it's fair to say as well is clearly a bubble of some kind you know in the ones the people who really want to be successful here. They're going to have to evolve across platforms and also evolve with the times. Most of the big name. So-called mom bloggers just went away and the ones that are still active online are either doing something else entirely or they just don't reach as many people now like they don't have the influence they did during during peak mom blog so to these questions of how much they paid these days for the instagram model. For what well they usually do. It is essentially to use carols phrase hawking products. They are paper post in other words. A brand is saying. We're going to pay you so much for this post. It's often based almost always based on the audience size. Most mom bloggers in the ten thousand to fifty thousand follower. Range will earn a few hundred dollars for product posts. It can be a pretty big range. Like i was reading about someone who has several hundred thousand followers and she was saying she. She's done deals for four hundred and fifty dollars. She's done deals for five thousand dollars. Okay so there is some real money at the high end. At least i think also. It is a cutthroat world and a lot of ways very saturated moms grammar market. Many brands only offer free product instead of payments which also it's kind of like more power to them like a lot of people say well. They shouldn't be doing that. They can try right just like anybody can try to be a mom instagram or any. Other kind of influence ser-. We've had stories in our archives of people who have offered free product instagram. That's helped them a lot so ultimately it's a free market you can choose you know affiliate commission where you get a cut of the sales price. They can be really really small and they're also issues with tracking so you can spend a lot of your influence over time pitching something and very few people swipe or whatever. They're they're supposed to do and if they do. It's not always tracked to your account last but not least certainly not least. You're always at the mercy of instagram and facebook of course which owns instagram and its algorithm so clearly not a sustainable business on the other hand you always need to evolve so if you originally wanted to be a mom blogger. It's hard to ignore instagram.

In a few words, he often says just the right thing to put my mind at rest, for instance. He knows the right things to say to me when I hit some of the happiness, stumbling blocks that are common to writers. For instance. I might say to him my editor is suggested so many changes. I mean, I agree with most of them. But sometimes stuff does slip through and I say to him. I don't know what this whole thing says. But I know there's at least this one part that's annoying or that's hurting my feelings or I said to him I've got to get it before. I am to catch a flight to give a talk and so on. Jamie listens. And then inevitably he says very kindly. Remember, this is what you wanted. And it's comforting because that's true. This is what I wanted. I wanted to become a writer. I wanted constructive criticism to make my work better. I wanted to put my thoughts out into the world. I wanted to engage with people about the ideas that interests me some aspects of this are difficult. But this is what I wanted so often the things that are disagreeable to us are inextricably intertwined with what we enjoy or desire most. I'm Gretchen Rubin. "And here's a great happiness hack about exercise something that we all want to hack aren't Gretchen was a bath. Greetings from Raleigh, North Carolina. This is Anna and one of my happiness hock, which will also a health hack for the is not being a morning person. And with my New Year's resolution steam kind of slowing down one of the things that's helped me is with my workout clothes once. I take them out of the dryer too. They go in dirty as an outfit. I folded them and put them away clean as an outfit for for example, instead of putting all the yoga pants together. And all the shirts together. What I do is as I told him out of the dryer. I put that out that together and wool them up and present in his voice standing up, which includes the sock. So all I have to do is grab a bundle is throw it in my gym bag and know that I have everything. Or from working out in the morning and I'm half asleep. Because I haven't had coffee I noticed by grabbing that bundle. I have everything. I don't have to think it cuts down on me talking myself out of working out that morning. So I hope this hope hope you guys are doing well, and I'll continue listening in usually they so much like lighting a great idea because I've realized in other areas of my life that sometimes I would put things away where I thought they went even though it was actually less convenient to access them in that. When you think about putting things away, according to how you use them not according to some sort of abstract categories. I think this is so smart. Yeah. Just and I love that. She puts the socks too because I feel like I'm constantly rooting around for socks. And so to have the socks with the outfit makes it just that much more convenient. Well, and this is the strategy of convenience in the book better than before. I talk about the twenty one strategies that you can use to make or break your habits, and the strategy of convenience is one of the most powerful and most universal strategies that works for just about everyone. And there's all kinds of hilarious research showing that if you make things even the teensy tiniest bit more convenient or inconvenient. You will affect people's behavior. Like, my favorite example is on a salad bar. If people have to use tongs instead of a spoon, they take less food because it's just like that much harder to use a toe use tongs and here like she says, it's it's like it's the morning. I'm not a morning person. I haven't had my coffee. I'm trying to get myself going just having this thing at the ready. You know from being a bully form. Fully assembled could be enough to just tip you into that direction. Just recently grudge, I was madly packing to go out of town for a few days, and I brought workout clothes. I got there and realized I didn't bring any sports bras. Yes. That had I had my outfits together rolled up like she's talking about. I would have just taken two outfits out and put them in. And I would have been fully prepared. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, what I think it's also a reminder it's kind of like to Dallas TX because as you have a bundle. Your like, it's reminding you I do exercise. Here's I just use these last week. I just use these two days ago. And so I think it's also reinforcing this idea of like, I'm using these things here's my bundle. I'm already because I use these the way that they've been pulled together because they've been used for exercise before it's interesting, though, just reflecting on this. I realized I did this without realizing it so I send out book plates and signature cards, which you can request. If you just Email me Gretchen at Gretchen, Rubin dot com book place for people. To put in their books, and I used to have like the envelopes in one place, the return address label somewhere else, the signature cards and book place somewhere else like my stack of Penn somewhere else. I mean, not very far apart, but they were all in their own separate thing. And then I got a box and made it like a full a thing where I could just pull the box off the shelf, and I would have everything that I needed and then I need to replenish the box. But it's sort of a fully assembled.

"I'm Gretchen Rubin. And this is a little happier. A while back. My mother had a milestone birthday. So we had a celebration for her among other things we had a special family dinner. And we each made a toast when we were done. My mother's stood up to respond of what everyone said that night. There's only one part. I remember clearly, and that was what she I said when she got to her feet. She said, I'm lucky I'm a lucky person. I don't know why I've been lucky, but I have been. One reason I remember this was this was something. I didn't know about my mother. I didn't know that she considered herself lucky in many ways, you'd say yes, my mother is indeed lucky, but of course, she's been unlucky to. And what is look the word starts to fall apart. My head is I try to think about it. Do we make our own luck to some degree? Yes. But not in every way is it unlucky even to talk about being lucky. If feels like it is. But I'm not even going to think about that. But aside from these deeper issues about the nature of luck. What struck me was how lucky I was to have a mother who considered herself lucky because although she'd never set it before she is communicated to me in a thousand ways. It made me so happy to hear her describe herself that way it makes me so happy to think back on it. I think it makes me even happier to have heard her say that then if she said of herself, I'm happy, and I've been trying to figure out why that is I guess because if she said she were happy, it would be great because she's happy. But it could also mean that she'd learned to make the best of things to accept what she couldn't change and to be grateful. These are all good things. But this is my mother, of course, I want her to be happy. I want her to have even more than that. I want her to be lucky also for a child even a very fully grown daughter. Like me, a parent's perspective on the world matters so much. Our parents helped make our weather. I feel lucky to have a mother who considers herself lucky. I feel like I'm part of why she feels lucky and that is a beautiful atmosphere for child to live at whatever age. You are are you lucky research shows that when we think we're in luck when we're using a lucky golf ball or have our lucky charms with us. We actually perform better as was so much in life our expectations shape, our attitudes and our actions. I'm lucky to have a mother who is lucky, I'm Gretchen Rubin. And I hope this makes your week a little happier..

"I'm Gretchen Rubin. And this is a little happier. Sometimes we learn about ourselves from other people I've often written and talked about the fact that we can build a happy life only on the foundation of our own nature. But it can be hard to know ourselves. We get distracted by the way, we wish we were. Or by the way, we think we ought to be or by other people's expectations or by the pressures of everyday life. And we lose sight of ourselves I have twelve personal commandments. And my first commandment is to be Gretchen this so easy. And yet it's one of the great challenges of my life. I found that one helpful though, painful question is whom do I envy when we envy people that means they have something we wish we had and that can be an important clue about we want from our lives or sometimes someone says something about himself or herself. And you think you know, I'm the same way and a truth about yourself becomes clear. That's what happened to me when I was reading Samuel Johnson. And he said of himself abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult. When I read that I thought that's me. I'm like Samuel Johnson. And I realized I was an abstainer. The same thing happened to me in a conversation several years ago now my whole life ever since I learned how to read I have loved to read reading is my treehouse, and my cubicle. My treasure map. And my teddy bear, I love love love to read. It's a huge part of my identity. But there was a period several years back where somehow I wasn't managing to make time to read not nearly as much as I've usually done in my life with everything going on. It had just gotten crowded out. I was dimly aware of this. But I didn't think much of it. I kept thinking it would fix it self. But then I was at a meeting of what am I three children's literature? Reading groups. I was still doing some reading and one member of the group. Susan reads, a tremendous amount, and in particular, she reads, a huge amount of contemporary fiction. So everybody in the group knows if you want to get the scoop about a new novel ask Susan we were all talking about the latest. Buzzy book and somebody said Susan, how do you have so much time to read and Susan said, I must read she paused for a moment to think instead again. Yeah, I just have to read when I heard that my stomach dropped. I felt the very same way. I must read and yet I hadn't been reading not the way I need to read. And I realized at that moment my life had to change. I must read and my life had to reflect that I still fight to make time to read, and I feel like I don't have enough time to read but ever since that evening, I've never stopped working hard at it. And I do read sometimes it's other people who remind us of our deepest values and the truest things about ourselves if you'd like to read my twelve personal commandments. I'll post Lincoln the show notes if you'd like to read more about Samuel Johnson and about being. In abstaining versus a moderator. I write about it in my book better than before and a link to a discussion of that too. And if you wanna know what I do read each week. You can go to hashtag Gretchen Rubin. Reads where I post a photo of the books. I've read that week. I'm Gretchen Rubin. And I hope this makes your week a little happier..

I wanted to be a feeling of expansion and creativity coming from within. Yes. Great. Ooh. Yes. I'm gonna I'm gonna focus in on that. It's not just about getting bigger. It's about growing. Yeah. So do you. Have any plans for how you're going to make growth happen? I'm starting to keep a list of everybody. I'd like to have lunch or coffee with. I'm gonna I'm gonna reflect on how to like what all the different areas are. So I need to sit down and kind of make it concrete for myself. But I'm excited to do that. Now that I have my theme. Well, I love watching you grow your sister. And Gretchen here's another twist on the one word theme for the year from one of our listeners. This comes from j n who says at the beginning of each month. I change the wallpaper of my laptop and my phone. I choose a theme for the month. And I use a photo illustration or drawing to symbolize it December is of course, related to the holidays. So I picked Christmas lights November was a month that I tried to enjoy every day, regardless of the weather. So it was raindrops September was orange leaves to welcome the fall season and to remind me to spend as much time as possible outside. August was palm trees as a reminder to soak the last bits of sun and enjoy the nice weather. I love that idea. So this is a different way. She's kind of got one word theme for the month. But you could. But it's interesting to think about how would you play out your one word theme or your one phrase theme into kind of different areas to remind. You of whatever it is that you're trying to focus on. So I think that was like a really creative fund way to include a little bit of whimsy along with really thinking about aims. Yes. Thank you J N. So let us know beauty. Try this at home and had choosing a one word or one phrase theme for the year works for you. And of course, tell us your word tell us your phrase, it's so fascinating to see what people pick so creative. Yes. And why they pick it. That's what's really interesting to absolutely let us it.

We're gonna talk about how to read more because that's something we hear from people all the time that they want to read more. And I want to read more you read a lot. But I want to read more. So I'm excited to strategize about how to do that. Yeah. And like so many things just thinking about. In advance that sort of setting yourself up really can make a difference. I read a lot, but I want to read more too. I mean, there's just never enough time to now one thing that a lot of people find to be very useful is to set a numerical challenge. Like actually put a number on it. You know, you manage what you monitor and a lot of people do this through the good read site, and because they have a challenge that's very easy to do. And I think you did the good reads challenge last year, didn't you? Well, I signed up, and I think I said like fifty bucks which I didn't even read anywhere in the round. "I've noticed a trend almost every group with the exception of the sports there's initial interest with about seven to ten people participating and requesting to be part of the group. There's a huge fall off after the first week to about half the initial number subsequent weeks. It's maybe one to two people. The weird thing is that even though people stop participating in the group when I run into them face to face. They'll bring up the group thanked me profusely for keeping them in the group and tell me how they will for sure try to make it to the next. Eating which of course, they do not show up to the only exception has been the soccer pickup game. I organize. What do you make of this? What strategies do I do to keep people coming so far? I have tried getting people to commit early in the week because I figured all the oblige IRS would feel compelled to come after committing. Nope. Yeah. So Gretchen, I think this is such a common occurrence, what would you say to rose? Okay. I so many thoughts so rose here the the clue for you is who comes the people who are the people who come to the sports games. So what is the difference between the sleep the food tracking in the walking group and the sports games? The sports games can only happen. If people show up that dates true accountability providers obliges because they're like if I salmon come to the soccer game, and I don't show then maybe no one will be able to play. So I have to come because nobody can play without me. The thing about the sleep the food tracking in the walking, this is the benefit the obliges themselves. So you feel like you're creating accountability. But to these obliges they're thinking, well, I'm really doing this for me. It doesn't feel like there's some of them a few of them feel obliged to you because they said they would show, but for many of them, it's really an inner expectation. So what you need to do is to communicate to these oblige IRS, not, hey, I'm here for you. You want to communicate? I'm counting on you. I'm eating you. I'm waiting for you. We can't move forward. If you don't participate if you don't participate others won't participate. You're letting them down because they won't go walking. If they think that they don't have too. So others will lose out. And that's why the people are coming to the sports. And so you have to move the.

In August my family and I went on a trip to France, and we visited the World War Two d day sites in Normandy, d day, of course, is the term often used to refer to the landing operations in June nineteen. Forty, four in Normandy, the allied invasion. We visited some of the major d day sites, including Omaha, beach, Utah beach, the Normandy, American cemetery and memorial as well as some sites in little Frenchtown whose names I will not even try to pronounce, lest any French speakers among our listeners have to rip their airfone's from their ears, but we went to them. It was a fascinating day. Aw, inspiring. It is hard to grasp the magnitude of what happened there in June nineteen forty four so much planning, so much courage, so much sacrifice. I've spoken often about my America feeling and no surprise. I experienced the America feeling over and over as we visited those sites, but something that's true for me. Is that I feel ideas most deeply when they come to me through words, I can visit places I can see things, but in the end it's writing that strikes me to the core, and that is what happened in Normandy. I felt my America feeling most strongly to the point that I couldn't stop the tears coming into my eyes. When I came across a reproduction pamphlet called a pocket guide to France. This was a small light pocket-sized pamphlet, which as it said on the cover was a restricted guide issued by the war and navy departments in Washington DC for soldiers going to France. Apparently similar pamphlets were given to soldiers headed to other countries as well. I'm always intrigued by documents like this, how they're written, how they're designed. So I started reading right through it. I expected it to be full of bureaucratic stuffy approved by military committee language. So I was at first surprised by its casual. Slangy language. It was obviously written so that lots of young soldiers would find it easy to read. It also had several Typos, so I suspect it was written in haste to be ready in time. The brief guide included sections on the history of France, the organization of French society, the food helpful phrases and how to pronounce them and material like that. The guide also admonished the soldiers at some length to stay out of various kinds of mischief. And here's what really caught my eye and gave me the America feeling. It wasn't a section headed. You are a guest of France. We're the guide addresses a question that would obviously be of enormous concern to the US soldiers. How would the French people view Americans? Here's what the guide said. Mostly the French think Americans always act square always give the little fellow, a helping hand. And are good natured, big-hearted and kind. They look up to the United States as the friend of the oppressed and the liberator of the enslaved, the French trust, both you and your country more than they do most other men and nations. Keep that trust what a beautiful conception of the United States, my big-hearted country. I hope we will always keep that trust if you'd like to see some photographs of the guide. I'll post them in the show notes. I'm Gretchen Rubin and I helped this makes your week a little happier. Panoply.
