Former Speaker of House Newt Gingrich on the Democrats' Midterm Plan

"That I'm a little paranoid about though, mister speaker, and I talk about this openly on the program, is that the Democrats have some sort of plan for the midterms that we might not yet be gaming out correctly because I have so much respect for our opposition and how Machiavelli and they are and how they're able to use tragedy for their own purposes. What do you think their midterm plan is? Because up until recently, you know, as per your example of the Saudi Arabian visit, it seems as if they are enthusiastically accelerating over a cliff. Political consequences be damned, I suppose, what's your thoughts? Well, I think first of all, I help publish papers in the 1980s called the Grenada papers. When we liberated the island of Grenada, which spoke English, this was an island occupied largely by Africans living in the Caribbean with agriculture and tourism as there are two biggest incomes. And the communists took it over. And as the communists tried to impose communism, everything fell apart. It was a disaster. So we now know because this is how we got to the Grenada papers. Because everything they wrote was in English. So we didn't need to translate the State Department couldn't screw it up. And it turns out that the leadership of the Communist Party of Grenada, when everything was failing, would meet every Tuesday afternoon for a study group. And what they were studying was not supply side economics. It wasn't Milton Friedman. It wasn't Adam Smith. What they were studying was Stalin's writing. Now, you have a Georgian bank robber who becomes dictator of a country that covers 13 time zones, living in Moscow and really bad cold winter, being studied by African descended, Caribbean native native folks were looking around going, what should we do next? Well, what does Stalin think we should do? The reason I tell you this story is, when AOC gets in a room, she doesn't have any point of reference. But I mean, Biden's different. Biden doesn't have a point of reference because he's not sure what rumi said. But I guarantee you that Newsom Kamala Harris, barriers, other people, senator Warren, Bernie Sanders, who remember honeymooned in the Soviet Union. I mean, just ask yourself, a guy who is born who lives born in Brooklyn, but a guy who was living in the forest of Vermont. Besides to go on a honeymoon, does he go to the Caribbean? Does he go to the beach now? He goes to the motherland to the great forest of Russia from the forest of Vermont. I mean, this isn't true believer.

"We continue our endorsed candidate series, turning point action TP action dot com, someone we enthusiastically support, known her for a while. We spoke all across the country together. I think we did Michigan state together. University of South Carolina, Anna paulina. Thank you. How you doing? So much for having me back on. For those who may not know, it was actually turning point and you that first, I think, discovered me, date literally day before I was supposed to go to medical school, you called me like way out of the country too. Grenada. Yeah, it was like some random place, right? Yeah, I was supposed to leave, but the reason I ultimately chose to stay in fight is because even in 2018, I saw what was happening with the progressive left. I saw what organizations like justice for Democrats were doing in running candidates. And I realized that identity politics is indeed alive and well on the left and I was kind of born with a certain amount of assets that I could use to fight that. And so here I am, obviously, her life pro God program and anti globalist. And you're running in pinellas county area. Is that right? Florida? Were redistricting, but the projected district is yes, northern area. So your primary is looking good. Yes. Yes, we're projected one by 64%. So in the general though, what's the tilt of the district? So we don't know yet because we don't know. That's right, desantis hasn't finished the maps. Is that right? Correct. And we're hoping he holds the line. Yes, and I think he's setting the standard, obviously there's a lot of people that I think claim to be conservative. And then our working against him. And so I think desantis is budget. He's been phenomenal. Yes. So the district could be anywhere between a lean deed to a lean R we don't know yet, right? Correct, but if it's the desantis maps, it's going to be an R plus

"Or whatever, and so the team that I had was for relatively young army rangers that had been in the service for four or 6 years or whatever. And one of them did a four year tour in the ranger regiment and didn't deploy to combat. In those four years. Wow. That's what I said. And it really surprised me. Yes. And it made me think, wow, we are really couple that moment with the pulling out of Afghanistan and all the things that are going on globally. And I thought, wow, man, we're like right on the cusp of going back to what it was like when I came in the army. You know, when you came in the other day. You know, when I came, it was like Vietnam beds. Yeah, right, right. So same thing. When I started out in ranger regiment or desert storm bets or you had guys with mustard stains on their jump wings, you know, because they did a combat jump. Yeah, Panama. And it was like, now looking back, we giggled. It was those dudes were awesome and they gave us great training. We idolized them, even though it was only a handful of missions in Panama or Grenada or desert storm. And that's what I thought this past week I was like, wow, we are headed back to that. And then going into this weekend and having some conversations more on the post traumatic stress and TBI in that realm. And talking to people, I got thinking, man, I really hope they're paying attention to taking care of our soldiers right now. Because you have an entire.

"There was never any doubt at the invasion would be successful in total. It took four days but there were significant casualties. Nineteen members of the. Us military died. One of these deaths and multiple injuries related found to be the result friendly fire. Several dozen grenadians were killed including the patients at a psychiatric hospital. There was accidentally bombed by the americans. Twenty four of the cuban soldiers who were working on the airport also died but after a few days. The american medical students were evacuated latest. Just as late as yesterday. Your own spokesman said that americans. I'm going to. We're in no danger. Did you have information that things have changed. They were in no danger in the sense of the right now. Anything was being done to them. This was a case of not waiting until something actually happened to them. In the final hours of the battlefield grenada. The americans were still pouring in more. Combat troops arrived at the new airport one way following another. These troops fanned out throughout the island looking for weapons and they found them. Russian and cuban musician was found as well as communications equipment and the american came in here and the house. Yes we do a guns this shed. In the roof it was all there in such quantities that the americans believe this to be the makings of a full-scale military base grenada. We were. It was a friendly island paradise for tourism. What it wasn't. It was a soviet cuban colony being readied as a major military bastion to export terror and undermine democracy. We got there just in time. Did you watch reagan speech. When he announced the invasion i saw oeste. Was there any part of you. That was like the president of the. Us is talking about my community. Where i'm from and if there was like a a strangeness of seeing the way that he was describing grenada which i imagine is very different from how you think about your own country. Yes yes of course. You feel insulted An angry really in the way that that your country is made invisible really the people within it made invisible For larger imperialist goal. I did not believe it had anything at all to do with the. Us students at the medical school. At the time i had a lot to do would reclaim in. Us am on cindy woods and make an appointment to the soviet union and cuba for the record. Wendy's reaction was not everyone's reaction. There were quotes in media reports of grenadians thinking america. For saving them canadians. Al free we are paying for the president of the united states for what he has done. Grenada in these reactions were real. There are still a lot of grenadians who say the invasion was good. Got the country back in order. It was very much a divide divided response some of the older people and so forth. Those who were not supportive of the revolution of course felt that this was a rescue mission. Praise god and towns to missouri and that we had really von once again so happy. More progress saves younger people and so forth took offense. They felt that grenada could've rescued itself. They could have decided their own political fate without the intervention of the americans. It seems to me that part of what made this an operation for ronald reagan. And what ultimately. I think made it successful in many people's were in. Many americans is is the fact that they were sort of like in and out very different from something like vietnam where the us got stuck there forever. And ever i guess. Is that your sense that this operation was politically expedient for for reagan and for the us government. Oh yes definitely. Because at the end of the day it wasn't a prolonged boots on the ground as we see no for example aghanistan so in that too we. I think it was an easy win. From an american perspective it was about conquest. The united states safer stronger and more secure in nineteen eighty-four then before. Us troops left grenada. A little over a year later there was an election won by a new party and prime minister who were very friendly to the us and the uk by that time. Reagan had started running for reelection and one of the big of his campaign was america is back. America is back standing tall looking to the eighties with courage confidence and hope and at least in the us. This became the story of the invasion of grenada. The story of either reagan. Saving the med school students or reagan. Being an opportunist in the middle of the cold war or even the story of how so many americans can completely ceased to remember that this even happened in the first place but for me and for people in my family and for many people from this part of the caribbean this is not the part that we remember or at least. It's not the only part that we remember. I felt that. I have never stopped grieving. The loss of what happened under nineteen thousand. Four hundred eighty three. Sometimes i you know it. More than others have never stopped feeling. What a terrible terrible loss of human life of spent opportunity and so on and this is the sadness from that. We're not really allowed ourselves those. We were invaded. We were not allowed to make an fix. Oh eras once you kill somebody that can't happen and once you you know invade and occupy and tell people that they were lives had no value or meaning. Well then you destroy something for a long time. It's not good but it is set back enormously. Shortly after the invasion decima came out of hiding. She became a public and outspoken critic of the reagan administration's decision to invade her country. But the invasion is still just one part of what she wishes could have gone differently. Had the revolution survived and had bishop been able to figure out which we forward that it would have remained as something that was of value to neighbors and to the united states thought that they didn't have to be so subservient within.

"Some of these accusations from the us government of grenada becoming a soviet military bastion. They struck a lot of people as totally bogus. But there were also real concerns about how marie special puts governing to the on this we had in terms of human rights solutions that was part of the the weaknesses and flaws of the revolution. In terms of intolerance descent. People were thrown in jail for speaking out against the government for years after the revolution. Still no election had been held and decimal william says. There was a feeling you could not openly criticise maurice bishop. It was a single party state. Practice nor position was tolerated. You know i speak for myself. And i know many others. We were completely carried forward by the positive development changes that were happening in the country. I for one was fixed on that. I was studying economic development before and i could see it happening and at moved me at the same time. I didn't do an completely blind eye to the fact that For example Forma teacher of mine was arrested. Not charged. But through an jill and i was disturbed about that there was no evidence provided but i think that he was treated very harshly and many others. We had seeing that. The revolution shall not be overthrown that nobody regardless of who you are. We'll be allowed to be involved in any activity surrounding the overthrow of the government by the use of The violence that if there was a threat to the revolution then there is justification insecure it. I'm anyone moves in that direction will be ruthlessly crushed was that always Justified or exceeded the record stands. The thing is this is where the record also gets complicated. Maurice bishop did come down hard on opposition. He did talk about ruthlessly crushing people who wanted to overthrow the government and yet looking back some grenadians. Now say that he didn't come down hard enough because of what happened next in the fall of nineteen eighty-three decima started to notice that things were off. She would call cabinet members and colleagues from her office in dc and they would seem distracted and unfocused then. The foreign minister told her that there was some quote trouble on the island. At the same time. Strange things were happening in dc Decima notice somewhat falling her to a seven eleven. Somebody broke into her office at the embassy. The security guard was acting strangely. He was standing outside her room in the middle of the night. She realized later that that is one. She began to feel like a hostage. Then another phone call. The deputy prime minister had staged in government takeover he and others in the party were communist hardliners who wanted to go in a more radical direction and they pleased. Maurice bishop under house arrest. He stayed there for a week until a crowd gathered outside this crowd that included children and teenagers and wendy grenade. I still recall that the the crowd was saying you know we want to lead this. Massive people push down the gate. Were bishop was held and got him out. Then they marched together to this big fort overlooking the capital. That's where the army was. Headquartered in that worthy would take back control of the government. The crowd went to the fort. Morris bishop went to the fort was in the rule. Wendy without tied with hundreds of other people i was in the the market square at the time was the low this explosion i ever heard in my life. This is hurt the sound of machine guns and then they say they saw black smoke coming from the fort probably from grenade-launchers. I will three cuss game up on food. And he's just the shooting at people members of the army who supported this coup. Were shooting at the crowd. Inside the forms people ran. They tried to escape. Some of them climbed onto the walls of the fort which was several stories up and the jumped. Many of them died. Many others were severely injured at lived a few minutes before that happened understood market salon. Just look up fire as in and people just fallen down yet.

"One of the heads of state that i met with and this visit told me the story about the two thousand soviet union. Were walking down the street. And the one i'm says have we really achieved full. Communism is this. Is this now foods communism the other one said. Oh hell no is. Things are gonna get a lot worse. The voice of radio free grenada is often a lonely one and the new reagan administration in washington could make it lonely still president. Reagan came in and of course the republican forces in states fell that president carter was too soft at america needed to reclaim his in the world. We will in the cold war in bipolar world. Where it was the ussr. And united states and countries in the developing world became satellites of either united states or the usa. Everybody was wandering to politics of you. Fitoussi because reagan and grenada war going to clash for months decima had been working behind the scenes to try to improve the relationship between her country and the us government things had not been great under. Jimmy carter but under ronald reagan's administration. They got way worse. They didn't like her government. They didn't even think that she was a real diplomat. It did not escape me. That i was not only young but i was black and female and if i were to forget i was reminded sometimes in pretty nasty ways. In fact the american government never officially recognised decima as diplomats. They refused to accept her credentials. And that made it even harder. For her when things escalated. How should we deal with the soviet union in the years ahead by nineteen eighty-two reagan started ramping up his rhetoric about the soviet union we have the strength to moderate soviet behavior. We've done so in the past and we can do to do so again in march. Nineteen eighty-three reagan gives his evil empire speech talking about the existential threat posed by the soviets they are the focus of evil in the modern world. And then just a couple of weeks. Later reagan delivers a speech from the oval office to talk about the defense of the nations in the soviet built up massive arsenal of new strategic nuclear weapons weapons that can strike directly at the united states. Reagan wants congress to invest a huge amount of money in new nuclear defense system and he brings up all these reasons why it's necessary because of things happening in the soviet union because of things happening in cuba but also because of things happening in this tiny country at the bottom of the caribbean on the small island of grenada. End of the caribbean shane. The cubans with soviet financing and backing are in the process of building airfield with a ten thousand foot runway. Grenada doesn't even have an air force. Who is it intended for at the time. Ten thousand feet was considered the standard land for a runway at an international airport. But it wasn't really about the airport. It was about who was building the airport. Several hundred cuban engineers and construction workers had been sent to help design and build the runway and that to reagan was a sign that this was all part of some begged soviet. Plan the soviet. Cuban militarization of grenada in short can only be seen as power projection into the region. This fear of power projection from other countries was not new since early eighteen. Hundreds under president monroe. Us policy was to oppose european colonialism in the western hemisphere as it developed teddy. Roosevelt argued that the quote monroe doctrine meant that the us was in charge of policing that part of the world and that continued through the twentieth century based on your doctrine the united states claimed that. The the caribbean as its sphere of influence. And to do that you had to crush what you define as communism wherever you soy trees in his head particularly in your so-called backyard and this might be obvious question but was it a communist regime. I never felt as if i was in a communist heat. I went to church free every sunday. And in fact if we look at it from a political economy perspective we had a mixed economy. Madu you had the private sector. You had the st it. You had cooperatives. Yes they were communist party but so the kinds of for people. But i mean people who are either you know communists incline kleiner. Socialist thinkers and i listen the revolution departments on but that.

Dementia i make a poop see. Oh i see okay all right. We are going to invade you though unrelated beans when we last left off. America was basically ben affleck from dazed and confused with an f. fourteen for a paddle. What happened next define win. All right so i feel like i should mitt front that i've never invaded a caribbean nation. And i'm sure it's braves harder than not even sure i'm reading this. Because no eroded. I've invaded several caribbean nations when they say all inclusive god damn it they better meet it next time so like. I'm going to criticize the hell out of all the shit. The us military managed to do wrong in their strained effort to invade an area the size of fresno california but to be fair. I want concede in advance that i would probably be even worse and invading grenada. I don't concede oh don't sell yourself short. Bunny i've seen the damage. You can do it at all you can eat. Buffet see you. could've i could cry. Grenade all inclusive to kick the mind that this is all that i will crush her data per my real voice so keep in mind that this is all being planned at breakneck speed. Maurice bishop was killed on october. The nineteenth the invitation that extensively prompted this came on the twenty second. The invasion happened on the twenty fifth and while reagan had been talking about intervention in grenada. For at least seven months they hadn't gotten far enough along in the planning stages to do stuff like have good maps seriously planned this invasion. You're using tourist maps. There were one step up from place mats. We just follow them. As and communist guys at the big red x they had no topographical information. Major features were omitted. Some areas weren't drawn to scale and newer shit like the point salines airport or mostly hand-drawn onto them and i'm not just talking about the maps they had during the planning stages i'm talking about the maps that pilots would wind up using to drop bombs on shit guys. I i haven't seen a hand-drawn castle half the size of the island. this thing is real though. The american team was deploying from fort bragg in north carolina and they realized like the night before that they had no maps grenada. What the so. So they had some guy drive to downtown near fort bragg and by literally tourist maps they had that and they had a copy of the economist as their this retirement men. Let's be careful because apparently they've got a giant four hundred foot mouse who needs help finding his cheese next to the fish sticks now to their credit. The us did try to get some more up-to-date information before the invasion two days earlier. They sent out a team of navy seals on a reconnaissance mission at point salines but the helicopter drop went wrong seals drown right away and the rest of the team flooded their boat trying to evade grenadian patrols and had to abort the mission the following day another seal mission was sent out but had to cut things short due to harsh weather but intelligence be damned the show must go on so h our for the invasion was set for five. Am on october. The twenty fifth the seals got eaten by grenadian orcas but before we get into the invasion itself. We spent a second on the disparity of force. Here the us would ultimately send in some seven thousand american troops along with three hundred troops from various allied nations nearby. They had four tanks three destroyers. Two frigates aircraft carrier an ammunition ship twenty-seven f fourteen tomcat fighter jets and a metric. Fuck ton of helicopter. We had seven thousand troops. And we were like you guys better give us like three hundred more because this is serious. Who gave us like five. Grenada has so few troops that the wicky comparison ads in the three libyan's and fourteen bulgarians that fought on their side. So america looks like less of a bully. Suffice it to say the. Us forces outnumber the grenadians better than three to one and their side has zero tanks destroyers frigates aircraft carriers ammunition ships and fighter jets okay. Admittedly that does sound one-sided but you know what they did have map now on day one. There were three main objectives the seventy fifth ranger regiment needed to capture the point sailings airport so they could land reinforcements on the island. The eighth marine regiment had to capture pearl's airport so nobody else could land reinforcements on the island. And in addition all that there were about six hundred american medical students. Attending saint george's university and other forces were deployed to rescue them before anybody could think to make hostages out of there also three noteworthy but more minor objects seal team. Six was sent to capture grenadas radio station for science purposes. A task force set out to capture richmond hill. Prison where a lot of political prisoners are being held and another seal team was sent to rescue governor-general schoon who is still under house arrest. Okay a lot of that makes sense. I guess the radio station part is weird. That's a weird part of the plan like we wanted everybody to really understand the economic eerie behind the invasion. We we're doing yeah. I mean it helps that we had tanks and they didn't but the real game changer. He was playing born in the usa..

"Just going to give it a may take some time needed pillow guy so in the wake of the contested election you end up with violent clashes between the nj 'em and gary's private army the mongoose. You're looking for a name. That sense fear. Enemies hearts changes to canadian goose gang. That'll scare somebody we got him. Jenny volcano the mongoose guy. Are we sure this country and not like a wii novel so the state of affairs are bad ass though they can kill cobras right. They're the ones that like eat. Poisonous snakes really easily do they do. Attack cobras yeah but this. It's still a terrible name for your gang. Sorry venomous snakes. Don't email me assholes venomous. You all know what. I meant poisonous. Venomous on communication words. Buck you in advance. So the state of affairs goes on for an early years until march thirteenth of nineteen seventy nine when gary made the mistake of leaving the country long enough for bishop to lead an armed revolution and oust his government in a bloodless coup bishop house gary and establishes the people's revolutionary government. Now you might think it wouldn't much matter to global politics who's running a country of ninety thousand people but this was during the time of the cold war bishop named his eldest son vladimir lenin bishop and grenade is merely fifteen hundred miles from the us coastline. Which is what. Americans think of as close by bishop runs grenada. But then he makes the mistake of the american people electing ronald reagan. Yeah countries full of brown people made that mistake. Man world of jimmy. Carter walter mondale so boring but amazing fucking better god. As one of those time machine moments like john connors fighting cyborgs in the future to eventually deal with the reagan thing and go back. This is probably hard for most people in this country or indeed the world to believe but there was actually a time. When america wasn't at war with anybody why in fact i know by the time ronald reagan took office in nineteen ninety-one. It had been a half a dozen years since the us had engaged in any major military operation and the united states not using its military to kill any brown people for six whole years. It's such an odd circumstance that it literally has a name. Historians call it vietnam syndrome. Is he after. We finally wrapped up the pointless death fest. That was the vietnam war. The american public express a strong public preference for peace over military action. And i swear. It is no exaggeration to say that one of ronald reagan's main goals as president was to fix that. He was desperate to find. Some little countries asi could kick so could put an end all that. Damnable piece yeah. Our foreign policy was basically walking down the hallway blocking and go. Okay what are we supposed to all our money. Heath create an educational industrial complex. You hear a stupid. that sounds. That sounds sounds amazing. Pouring an amazing. Like mondale more jimmy. Carter so reagan's first effort to pick a fight and grenada centered around the point. Salines international airport. There was an airport on the island called pearls airport. But it's runway was too small to land commercial aircraft and it was hemmed in by mountains on one side of the pacific ocean on the other so it couldn't be extended so as far back as nineteen fifty four when the island was still a british colony. There were plans to build a larger airport elsewhere. That could have a full-size runway. The plans are on hold for decades. Wants bishop took over. He made point sailings a priority. If you asked him he'd have told you is because the only chance grenada had a decent economy was tourism. And the only chance they had a tourism was having airport that accommodate commercial jets. But if you ask the reagan administration it was so those damn commies could land the largest soviet aircraft air to disperse missiles and weapons. And and. okay. We're focused on the airport from fucking wings. Meanwhile answer the fbi is selling the nuclear football to russia for three months on. We got sons sued so so so bad. In march of nineteen eighty-three reagan started sounding the alarm about the threat of grenadas. New airport reagan's doomed. Crying got so vitriolic in fact that a democratic congressman named ron. Dellums went to grenada on a fact-finding mission only to report the quote based on my personal observations discussion and analysis of the new international airport under construction and grenada. It is my conclusion at this. Product is specifically and has always been for the purpose of economic development and it is not for military use. It is absurd patronizing and totally unwarranted for the united states government to charge that. This airport poses a military threat to the united states. National security republicans. Keep going after tropical places. They're going to have no place to retreat in the winter when the lecture he takes his shit in texas but if he didn't title that report the deal with airline that he missed a huge opportunity despite the obviously commercial nature of the airport. Reagan kept beating the drums of war about it but a new much shinier casas bell. I showed up in october of eighty three. His name was mohammed ali. Tom little respect terrible. This one started when grenadas. Deputy prime minister bernard cord seized power. Epo bishop under house arrest when news gets out about that. Bishops supporters erupted in protests and bishop manages to escape soon after he was captured and executed by a firing squad of soldiers along with his partner. Who was the minister of education and for their cabinet ministers and union leaders. At that point the military realized they were the ones with the guns so they deposed cord plays governor general paul schoon under house arrest and declared that they were in charge and they would kill the fuck out of anybody who said otherwise okay. So i'm assuming. Ronald reagan's about to make one of those little finger circles below the waist and then punched grenada phrase from they look at it at this point. Some of the nearby caribbean nations. Get a little nervous barbados. Jamaica and the organization of eastern caribbean states appeal to the us for assistance and even though that didn't amount to a legal justification for invasion was all the excuse. Reagan needed within twenty four hours of the request. The us military was mobilizing for the mission to invade grenada named with typical american pomposity operation. Urgent fury that's what. He called shitting operations right now. Shooting don't you do that. Don't you take that for me to my. We're gonna make like ronald reagan and consult a psychic on.

Which one is which one is your grenades grenada and granada or nato. I will accept so tom. You're gonna read. Something noah wrote for you. Are you ready to have to cite yourself quack. so tom what was the invasion of granada. So grenada It's a no all right so first. A little background. That's more like it. Grenade is an island nation foul. Okay all right all right. I promised him. Grenada is an island nation about one hundred miles north of venezuela actually the eleven smallest sovereign nation and. That's on a list that counts shit like vatican city and monaco. The whole country is about one hundred and thirty five square miles. So if it was an american city it would be the sixty ninth biggest right between philadelphia and vegas if we measured by population. It wouldn't even make the top two fifty to be clear. It is a tiny tiny place. The history of the island begins in piloting epoch where a bunch of submarine volcano spewed out huge piles of earth sperm for a few hundred thousand years. All the volcanoes in the area are extinct today with one exception. And it's name is the only reason i bring up. Islands origins at all that and noah is quite literally making me read this start with the geological origins. Anyway grenadian coast. There's an active submarine volcano called. Kick them jenny. Which is rated four five on google maps despite being six hundred miles below the ocean's surface. Okay i actually looked into this. That score would be a lot higher. If you don't count multiple who said quote to that shapiro. Hey naming people tip. Don't give your volcanoes cutesy names because they all erupt eventually and murder people and the only thing that you can control in there is how often the news as to talk about the devastation and loss caused by the buzi. Do psy volcano something normal. Anyway the island is first inhabited about thirty six hundred years ago when native south americans made away across the hundred miles or so of open ocean between there and venezuela but doesn't show up in written history until fourteen ninety eight. i'm christopher columbus spots at during his third voyage to the new world. He never actually landed there. But that didn't stop him from naming it he called it la concepcion and although that was a reference to the virgin mary. It's still kind of like naming it the island of fucked so the name didn't stick a later. Map by america's namesake amerigo. Vespucci had the island marked the name mile. But in the fifteen twenty. Some spanish maps started using the name grenada which became lager nod. When the french colonized it in sixteen forty nine and then grenada when the british took it from them. At the end of the seven years war christopher columbus going island to island to drive bys with flag javelin. Just dibs in everything. So tom what you're saying. Is that the spanish. Couldn't hold the mayo. Oh what why are we letting eli. Didn't we have a moratorium on this ceases got it. It's unaccept- lead them so for the next one. Hundred and fifty years grenada remains a british colony until a radical grenadian politician with a spectacular name of theo phileas albert. Mary's show started to agitate for more local power in the islands. Governance this led to a series of concessions by the british government aimed at finding out. Just how little they could offer the natives to get them to calm the fuck down so like in the nineteen twenties. The crown colony was governed by fifteen man legislative council and the crowns big concession was to allow the locals to elect five of those fifteen members. And if that sounds overly generous to you. Don't worry they restricted the vote to only the island's wealthiest individuals of course in all they gave this damn near symbolic vote to less than four percent of the populace. No glad that doesn't happen anymore. And none of them were allowed to vote on sunday. Still the juggernaut of independence was rolling in nineteen fifty one. They held their first general election on the basis of universal adult suffrage by nineteen seventy four. They were granted independence ultimately the opted to remain a member of the british commonwealth. So technically queen elizabeth remained their monarch and she was represented by a local governor general appointed by the crown but for all intents and purposes grenada would be self-governing from that point forward. Well except for the swans. They did not own their swan. That's good as first. Prime minister was a labor agitator named eric. Gary gary was the founder of the grenada united labour party and yes they use the acronym gulp which started as labor union and eventually became the islands. Dominant political party. The gary was. Gary was already serving jerry mirror at the time so after a quick change of title and a bit of updated stationary. He became the newly independent nations. I prime minister okay. Sorry prime minister. What do you mean the entire country is on its fifteen. How can a whole country. Of course the british empire generally didn't leave newly independent colonies in great shape to thrive under self rule especially not when those countries were full of people of color. The early years of independence weren't great for the average citizen so opposition party started to thrive over the next couple of years. His main opposition was a marxist. Leninist party called the new jewel movement or nj 'em led by a revolutionary named maurice bishop in nineteen seventy six the to win toe to toe in the general election and at the end gary claimed victory but the end nj m. refused to accept the results. Can you imagine it. Loser of electric refusing to concede This let it sink in.

CDC reverses statement on airborne transmission of coronavirus, says draft accidentally published

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention removed language on Monday from its website that said, the coronavirus spreads via airborne transmission. It's the latest example, the agency backtracking from its own guidance. The agency says the guidance that went up on Friday and largely went without notice until Sunday should not have been posted because it was an early draft they hadn't been approved evidence that the virus floats in the air has. been mounting for months with an increasingly loud chorus of Aerosol Biologists pointing to super spreading events in choirs at churches on buses in bars, and another poorly ventilated spaces. They cheered when the CDC seem to join them in green the coronavirus airborne although CDC officials maintain Fridays post was a mistake Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill are incredulous and promised subpoenas an investigation to figure out what's really going on behind the scenes. This change on the website on Monday is the third time that trump's CDC has posted significant coronavirus guidance only to quickly reverse stance. It's also the latest disorienting turn in a significant scientific debate with enormous public consequences for how we returned to schools and offices the debate over whether the extreme infectiousness tenacity of the virus is due to its ability to spread well over six feet especially indoors and small particles that result from talking shouting singing you're just breathing many experts outside the agency say the pathogen can waft over considerably longer distances than six feet to be inhaled into our respiratory systems especially, if we're indoors and air flow conditions or stagnant. What's clear from such cases is that while the virus Shirley spreads slowly in households among family members, it also spreads rapidly at indoor events. The bring lots of folks together. Meanwhile against that backdrop, an NIH press staffer is being pushed out after being exposed as a secret anti. Mask Blogger, William crews, a public affairs specialist at the National Institute. And the White House has also again move to shake up the personnel office at the Department of Health and Human Services. After a series of IMBROGLIOS, the trump administration yesterday removed its top two liaisons between the White House and the Health Department Emily Newman and her deputy. Catherine GRANATO will be shifted work fulltime at the Voice of America. Newman already has spent more than three months detailed to the global media agency as its chief of staff which politico reports has meant that Grenada who was literally an undergraduate at the University of Michigan this Spring and is in her early twenties has been in charge of the entire health departments personnel policy amid pandemic that has killed more than two hundred thousand. It's ninety five facemask shortage, and we have a story today that sites several experts agreeing that the trump administration's mismanagement and incompetence are the major reasons why? The most recent ten thousand American deaths were added in just the last nine days three fewer days than the ten thousand deaths that preceded those. On a positive note, fewer of those infected with the virus or dying than earlier in the pandemic, and that's great news. "Around grand Randy. We're flex on tough months in a motion, Twitter, plate, emotional, and a little concerning. Yeah. Ariana GRANDE is asking the universe to give her a break on Thursday. The songstress went on Twitter event, some of the emotions. She has been feeling in the wake of MAC, Miller Steph in one tweet she asks, can I please have one? Okay day just one please? She continued. I'm so tired, please Arianna then re tweeted one of her old tweets where she wrote, everything will be okay. I'm replied, just fucking kit j. fucking k. o like just kidding kidding. In the midst of her cryptic messages fan sledded her Twitter with messages of support and other Asian, the seemingly prompted of Grenada thing. Her fans for loving her so much. Even though she says, quote, I don't deserve it. We'll know the most concerning ones were like, I'm so tired. I just wanna go to sleep. I just, I feel so like badly for her. She's been through so much in her life and like I know. I mean, I don't know how you even come back from her whole situation in Manchester, like I can't even begin to think of what kind of feelings that makes you. Have and she did in a way that was like super authentic and unique and like really special and like didn't like she. She continues to honor the victims of the Manchester bombing, like in different unique special ways. And like to that to me that just proves like a strong person in general. And like just being in the spotlight as much as much as she is like, can't always be the easiest thing. And like now, people saying the most horrible discussing things that like it's her fault that MAC Miller killed himself. Like, are you kidding?
