"Over the years we just love the show question about wished urea large wisteria bush with the hanging pods are those seed pods poisonous to dogs our dog just goes nuts for these so we try to pull them off before she can get to them yeah I would not recommend that all because I think they have arsenic Anna okay so called almost put a put is the purpose of those pods they draw support well they support seeds and the seas can be grown in to I'm more wisteria vines we don't need him hurt which carry a fine so it doesn't harm the plant by removing all those just cutting them off no actually it helps the Boston for the next year so I would eliminate him whatever you can to that wouldn't want them into the doggie diet no but she thinks they're like dessert okay second quick question is kini L. green zucchini squash growing in a race bad good so I'll proper watering I think but some of the leads the older leaves are getting yellow you're just gorgeous cut those off and is that promoted over water or can be from pole I think probably more likely drainage is a problem but I wouldn't be worried about it as long as the new gross keeps coming out clean and neat yes it does okay so you're fine okay great thank you very much for your help well Jerry thank you that's why I'm here you take care all right let's go to Gregory in Gilderoy lesson nice thing great Greek deal right yeah there we go hi there Gregory hi Gregory Miller with two Jeez I guess there you go so but others day it's good to be a father I think so show we we moved into it removed down here a couple years ago and a lovely house and we have lovely garden we heard some nice plants and we have a a little you persimmon in the in the corner and then they collected for years and and not much is happening but this year we had lost a little those old but gross but they also are hundreds of them and now there's maybe only twelve or fifteen maybe twenty left on the tree and I'm wondering I'm puzzled why Royals budge fall off well in Whistler persimmon they will probably drop twenty percent of maybe thirty percent of their budget anyway because they can only the tree can only support so many persimmons so it's a natural thing that they do now perhaps in Gilroy I think your temperatures have been hot to nothing having up and down up and down and that is something that the tree is trying to adjust to and it's a little difficult so if you have still have a few persimmons left on I think you're in good shape okay yeah that I kind of thought it was a natural thing that so many dropped off and then so few were left that was kind of wondering well I think you had a other sure do exactly another quick question so there is a weeping cherry out in the front that's been badly crooned and I'm currently working on it and it's at a point now where I kind of like to do a little trimming and get some kind of that layered look and I'm wondering if now's a good time to do that or should I wait a little bit longer in the season I would wait till no longer in the season because it's still pushing out all the growth with the cherry this is a weeping flowering cherry yes okay it's crafted at the at the top of the wild cherry so that's what you have to be aware of okay so in your pruning you don't want to cut off the the bugs that are producing the the blossom and the weeping part and the the way you tell that Gregory is that the you'll see some upright growth and that upright grosses are saying you want to be able to cut off and you can cut that off any time all K. yeah I've got a lot of great gross stuff going on you don't want to know yeah okay okay and then it just as a mention of this year for our beings that are squash we but we got the scoop contraptions letter about six feet tall and maybe five feet wide and they're leading and so everything's growing up the leading and it makes the guards look real neat and tidy and then they just go up one side back down the other side if they want to and it's a very clever little gizmo but I'm not too familiar with it let's see who is our name for for can't think if it wasn't gardener's supply one of those cattle okay we get yeah order supplies all right yeah that is true because I'm not a neat freak on gardening so you can I I understand that but that's okay I don't know I don't have to be all right great great well it's a lot simpler than the polls too because because set these things up and like I say the netting is is is a nylon mesh about five four inch squares three eight squares yeah and you know set it up and then everything goes up and and you you hardly have to tie anything in it and then you can walk inside it and and pick your beings when they well yeah yeah I could take them out yes take a picture cell okay I can do that yeah Bob Canada at eight yeah Bob cannon at AOL dot com okay okay but I love your show thank you Gregory I appreciate all my listeners you you better believe that all excuse me let's go to Cathy in San Francisco hi Paula hi love your show and I just started getting hot to down a bit to an hour okay very disappointed to hear that because I think your your show is fantastic well some of the great info I have no control over that well shame on them that means that they don't understand they don't they never mind.

"On more substantive fronts both Democratic nomination competitors and Republicans have called out the former mayor's relative inexperience citing his management of a small town of one hundred thousand as not providing the foundation necessary to be president. The New York Times produced a lengthy profile today of Buddha Jr but digs into his body which spanned eight years and ended just weeks ago. The paper quotes Rahm Emanuel. A key figure in the Obama White House and the former mayor of Chicago widely disparaged for his in office. They're quote. Nobody walks into the office on day. One with what they need to know. As the reason for South Benz ongoing recovery over one hundred million dollars was invested in the city as this effort unfolded. Buddha has taken it on the Chin from the black community for how managed police failing to increase diversity among officers and demoting a black chief but the times also quotes Mohammed Shabazz? The second accounting employees quote. I have no idea where all this I don't like Pete. Attitude came from and quote. The Times writes quote. Mr Shabazz used to set up. A lemonade stands other community activists at scenes of gun violence to get residents and victims families to talk to one another every time. We did one of these things. Pete would somehow find his way there. He said and quote caucuses are just eight days away in Nevada where people will gather nearly two thousand sites across the state and caster preferences for the nomination. It's similar process. Iowa system and the Nevada Democratic Party have been slated to use an APP also made by shadow the company that provided software to the Iowa Democratic Party in the wake of Iowa Nevada Democrats quickly announced. They wouldn't use shadow and they'd already had backup plans in place but yesterday there was no sense of how Nevada would handle its caucus. Tallying at all. Nevada was ahead of Iowa longshot and testing and training on the APP and other procedures. But how to throw that all out the window now? They've got a new APP. But it's really a Google spreadsheet and they're calling it a hockey calculator and trying to not use the word APP. At all the Washington Post reports quote precinct. Chairs will receive pre configured ipads purchased by the Party and will access the calculator through a quote secure gle web form unquote. The State party said in a memo to presidential campaigns results will be transmitted through secure hotline and verified either through the online calculator or with paper reporting sheets and quote Marianne Steiner. The President of verified voting a nonprofit that promotes election integrity told the Washington Post quote. I think transmitting the results over. The Internet could probably elevate the risk. Someone could interfere with that. If they wanted to sow mistrust or doubt we would recommend they do not do that. And quote to pay for all this ipads. The Party is asking caucus-goers for twenty dollars donation. While voluntary some precinct chairs told the New York Times Jennifer Dinah even asking made them uncomfortable the New York Times noted that the addition of early caucuses designed to provide access to the process to more people complicates matters because people have those events mark preferences from first to third optionally fourth and Fifth. Originally Tabulate snap was going to reconcile all that as an Iowa. Nevada was required by the National Committee. This time around to provide raw totals and final state delegate equivalents to improve transparency. This is a common process in some countries. Elections called ranked voting. Rod Car nearly losing his seat. It took five counts for him to win with each successive count shifting votes from unviable competitors quite a scene. The Maine caucuses are simpler as an Iowa. With an initial alignment when people arrive a check for fifteen percent viability and then horse-trading sort out supporters of non viable candidates. All that information's recorded and ballots filled out and then calculations are performed to determine delegates for each precinct. Atlanta amounts the executive director of the Nevada. "Podcast hacking humans with Joe Kerrigan as well as the CO host of caveat with Ben Yellen where they discussed law and policy as well as surveillance and privacy. Hello Gentlemen always good to be back Lou any big news about potential security things that happened this week. Oh Nah the the big news is nothing to do with security midst just incompetent. Yeah that's true. That's true fresh talent and of course we're talking about the APP that The Iowa Caucus decided to make use of and things did not go well for them. Now you'd think they might. They've done a little testing. But as Jason and I were talking about a little bit earlier in the show you know the customers are now quality control and version one testers. So that and in an election doesn't seem like democracy should be your Beta Tester. I I don't know. Democracy technically is still kind of in Beta so why not they just took it to the next level. That's true. Yeah so I guess we can get a little bit. The specifics here I know. Jason has found a couple articles but there were a few headlines that leaped out at one of them was a voting issues tend to stem more from low grade incompetence than malfeasance seasons. which is kind of what happened here? And I did read an article that said that they They actually had a perfectly good and working APP that they used two years ago when they did a caucus but I decided to upgrade into a new APP which didn't work The pivot let's pivot. So yeah I mean I. I've read a bunch of articles on this and the interesting thing is that You uh-huh so this is going out to people who are supposed to be counting votes but there it's it's Bring Your own device day here in the elections in the United States and you know as we know android has such a good track record of being you know. Install ones run anywhere because you know that is that you know is not fragmented in any way h shape reform in the device providers are all in line with each other. So if you know you write one APP you know. It's going to run anywhere task absolutely. Yeah Yeah so You step one Let people You know get devices from the state maybe that have it. All Pre installed with the same device vice chance so you're not trying to do device Specific os specific Beta testing with the new release. Two days before supposed to go live. I suppose I'm surprised. By the fact that fact as I was about what we learned about like Wi fi on military bases I am shocked. That this this stuff isn't controlled at some level that people are just using personal devices and things of that nature but I guess that's the way it is these days states rights in county counties are in charge of their own. You know election boards and things like that so it's not it's not one unified we don't have you know the United States Department of voting. That's one one of the big problems. I suppose. It's tempting to think that you know this is just the way that it is but I'm sure at least I hope that at some point there are some very very frustrated Security professionals that were consulted about this. That were screaming. Die Heaven saying for the love of God. Don't do this. We're just that is in in fact the case Brian. They were screaming to high heaven and To the point about the the mobile devices. It's my understanding that they did did not get it to the apple APP store in time for it to be available on election day. The latest version hadn't been hadn't gone through apple's approval process quickly enough so they were actually even forced to use android. Yeah Yeah Right. Yeah I I saw somewhere. They were delivering At via test flight on was or is that just. I don't know I mean that's possible I imagine you're the people in this situation At Shadow Imagine I. I'm sure also. By the way name that inspires confidence and free and absolute relations shadow. Yes yeah yeah But I think certainly the three of us have all been through that situation where you're developing something or something's being close to launch or some some creative or professional endeavors getting close to the time when actual people have to use it or consume it or whatever and maybe things aren't going as well as you'd hoped and and that feeling of panic starts to set in and you're going Oh crap oh crap I've just imagining the folks had shadow that feeling settling in over them as as it became clearer and clearer that this was not going to end well for them. I had that feeling every time we did a movie website and it was Friday of hunting down that was I know that feeling very very well. I had it for when the major concert. Tickets were about to be announced and we had to make sure pre-sales where all functioning in at the deal with third parties and God knows what they did. Yep Oh boy. I don't miss this. Those pits in my stomach. No I guess it really is that thing of no battle plan survives contact with the enemy that sort of thing. Yeah Yeah and I the first first contact website when I built at ninety seven. I believe I mean we we. We made the Hollywood reporter. Because we've got ten million hits in our first day in that thing was running On this monster. SGI This was like two hundred and fifty thousand dollars Gi. It literally melted. The hard drive really has this was before we had Ram caching bashing and things like that every page thirty micrographics on it and all this crazy stuff at VRML but the problem was this is before we knew how to optimize for assets there was a CSM CSSR. Everything was in Table Man and all of the all of the read rights melted ely. That's amazing. Yeah so I I I blame the Borg personally. I think you know I think our server was assimilated but Yeah I know those pits and when things go wrong somebody I was gonna say somebody got fired takeover this but as we all know he gets fired. No that's not that's not true. I'm sure somebody probably will get fired. But it's never the higher ups in the company is it no and it. It's it's always langer like little decks poindexter that sitting in the back. That was putting up the red flags or through some rightly worded. Email saying is is. We're not quite ready. It seems like these folks are connected insiders with the with the Democratic Party. Yes which seems to I was trying to. I was talking to Jason about a little bit earlier. And it seems that they got this Gig through basically gripped so yes we we do know that there was a working up from some other company that it was rolled out two years ago and went just fine but As we as we pointed out on the cyber wire and I'll read part of Gerard Garard Amira's statement here. He says as the Iowa Democratic Party has confirmed the underlying data collection process via shadows mobile caucus was sound and accurate but our process to transmit that caucus results data generated via the APP to the IDP was not importantly this issue did not affect the underlying caucus results data. This my friends is a distinction without a difference He also I love this he also goes on to say. The goal of the APP was to ensure accuracy and a complex reporting process. We will apply the lessons learned in the future. Future in have already corrected. The underlying technology issue. We take these issues very seriously and are committed to improving any volving to support the DEMOC Dixon to support support. I'm laughing too hard to support. The Democratic Party's goal of modernizing its election process. They're saying this like they still have job. Which makes me think that they probably we do and Brian is probably do as well? I think the one thing that really came out of this was the outcry for Kennedy. Just go back to paper and pen. Well fortunately fortunately that's what saved it. Everybody drive their results to the local is my understanding. Also that one of the things that slow this down was some of the voting precincts because they thought they were going to have the APP working. They had dropped their paper ballots in the mail already. uh-huh hoops and yeah and you know the postal service takes the integrity of the male extremely seriously so it's not like you can go. Hey listen can I have that back. You try that at your local post office. Some rain exactly. No postal inspectors carry. Let me tell you Yeah they take it seriously. Well we'll see I think I had. There's one quote here was going to say quote here. I I can't do this all day. Balls all right I believe it's Nevada. Who who who was originally contracted with these folks and they pulled the plug instead? Yeah we're not gonNA do this now. We're not we're not gonNA use shadows APP. Okay that's good. Yeah Yeah Yeah in the vice article I love this quote from Gregory Miller Co founder of the Open Source Election Technology Institute in he says in a system in a world where we are questioning in every aspect of elections and whether they can be trusted. Why would you do? Anything to fuel a disinformation attack. And that's exactly what the Democrats have done. They've opened a can of whoop pass on themselves. Unforced error absolutely absolutely well. Let's transition a little bit. I read an article recently and I could have sworn I had stumbled onto a near future Sifi dystopia and website but unfortunately it's all too real all the invasive ways. China is using drones to address the corona virus so title recently pedestrians crossing a bustling intersection in shoot gang. City in northern China found themselves being scolded by police operated drone equipped with a camera and loudspeakers. Their mistake was neglecting to wear face masks. which by the way don't do anything against the virus but there you go which at least four hundred twenty seven people and infected more than twenty thousand worldwide worldwide? Most of them in China's mainland there have been increasing pictures and videos and etc being posted to twitter and other social media sometimes by the government showing bewildered wilder passer bys jerking their heads to the sky upon hearing disembodied voice harassing them about their hygiene. A policewoman yelling drones loudspeaker says hey handsome guy speaking taking on your mobile. Where is your mask and later instructs the group Pretty Young Ladies to wait until they get home to eat so they won't have to lower their masks? Yes so they're basically just flying drones around everywhere and trying to police people with it and create. This reminded me this is like a letterman sketch. Right like would take over the drive through at the local Taco Bell or something you know some guy on your or when he even send someone into a store and he'd be talking on the walkie talkie and the person will have to say whatever he said. That's what this reminds me of. I just like using a drought first of all. You're using a drone with loudspeakers and it's just weird. Yeah it feels very near future dystopian like I said I kind of felt like I was doing it now. We know China have been using drones quite a while some of which they've disguised as birds on a mass scale to track down. Fugitives catch people making traffic. African fractions monitor students taking college entrance exams with a drone. That seems amazing to me but the concern of course now is that that because they are attempting to contain the corona virus and. They're they're going all in on drone technology to do so as we kind of know about governments and particularly clearly dictatorships once something has been deployed. It doesn't tend to go away even case for which debut originally deployed. It has been solved. So yeah there's is a lot of fear that this is the new world order in China. this one in particular really freaked me out Reports from around the country further indicate that the drones are covering cities and villages with disinfectant spray so their aerial bombing their own people. Now they're saying this is helpful that the defective is if the disinfectant is effective in preventing the spread of the corona virus but man. Oh man doesn't that's freak you guys out. Because unless they're spreading the corona virus over to the weavers occurs which is definitely getting into x-files territory Yeah but I think you know they could really just kill two birds with one stone if they went full David Letterman and put the loudspeaker house speaker on. It had them talk to them and then dropped a watermelon perfect watermelon vendors Play US out. Paul Yeah Yeah I'm remind the disinfectant spray. The thing I mean I I think about Amtrak communities well. I was thinking about Community Museum Spray Miskitos racks to drive around and spray ski. He does so..

And I'm just Melik the guy who's been reading articles book excerpts even student essays to you every day including holidays for over three years. It's always with permission from the authors or websites, and like I do occasionally on the show. I have another student essay to share with you today. I've partnered with Dr Chris Patty in his classes at Appalachian state university. He created an assignment for his students that fits really well with the show and we picked to to feature all do one today. The day I had to Orlando. Also, my business partner Lee his birthday is today's so happy birthday to him fund that I get to see him today in Orlando since I see him probably just a couple of weeks a year, and then a marine another essay in a few days the day. I get back from Orlando. So today's essay comes from Jinnah Martineau, she studying psychology and recreation management at Appalachian state university. Her current endeavors include training, her pet pig Linus to be. A certified therapy animal, which is pretty amazing her passion for mental health in the outdoors fuels goal of one day being a farm or wilderness therapist, so cool and have her essay in the blog at old podcast dot com. And with that. Let's get right to hearing her essay and start. Optimizing your life. Doors worth closing by genome are no. From the time. I took my first steps prancing around on my tippy toes and spinning in circles was protocol anywhere. I went the world was my sage, and I made sure everyone knew it, but blossoming into the prima ballerina I dreamt of becoming brought many challenges. I was obligated to dance with pulled muscles and broken toes. Costumes cost an average of three hundred dollars a piece and single parents may transportation difficult, this magical world a ballet proved to be a domain of unhealthy self expectations. I was grazed with advice from dance teachers and coaches telling me to never give up their words were encouraging, especially as I gazed across the studio noticed I tower over the other girls, my age, I knew never giving up was valuable advice. But for a long time, I believe it was the only way to succeed. I've come to realize that western culture tends to romanticize perseverance we paint beautiful pictures of struggle and determination by praising the success stories that involve. Overcoming countless setbacks surely the stories of never giving up our inspiring. But such a region mindset around quitting can also be detrimental to our health and happiness, I had a unique experience. In my interpersonal communication classes pass a master at Pletcher state university. It reminded me of the old adage attributed to Alexander Graham Bell when one door closes another opens. My professor, Dr Chris Patty showed me that deeply listening to yourself and identifying your needs can make you a better happier instrument for communicating genuinely with others to me. He also emphasized the often forgotten ending to saying, quote, we often look so long and so- regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us, and quote our lives present us with the tools we need to build our dreams around the inevitable. Obstacles we face that those dreams cannot change his toxic idea that keeps us running in circles. My professor reminded me that we don't have to. Wait for the door to be slammed in our faces. We can learn to be courageous and closed some doors ourselves those advice. I which I embrace sooner communicating with myself more show me that just as people and relationships. Evolve soda their passions and aspirations learning to trust my intuition and lean into the discomfort of change highlights the moments in life, when it's okay to give up on healthy, relationships jobs. Leave you exhausted unsatisfied college majors or hobbies. He no longer have enthusiasm for opportunities for change are all around us yet in cheese, Buddhist phrase that describes as normal human experience of hopelessness, essentially, it means totally and completely tired out reminds me that abandoning hope and giving up is a difficult in beautiful truth of existence yet ain't she is a form of radical honesty that gives us space to relax and reexamine our reality. In the present moment, the ability to cut our losses in walkaway is a noble pursuit of self preservation. Psychologists Carson Roseanne, Gregory Miller have even coined term for it called gold disengagement. If you're interested in this topic, you can learn more about it by checking on article written by Dr David Feldman psychology today, titled why giving up can sometimes be good article explains how giving up is an essential adaptive ingredient emotional wellbeing as well as a sign of strength. Not weakness stepping away from things that cause you to lose sight of who you are is a powerful discount part of being a full person. And it should not come with any shame. How do we do this? How do we know when it's really okay to give up the scariest part of the process for me is noticing when I'm doing something for the wrong reasons. Befriending oneself is the only mechanism for learning when his time to like oh previously. I operated in a very harmful way that let my accomplishments define how much love I deserved if I cheesed this bodyweight published this research could do the most pure wets in the class. Then I would be happy over time. I realize. I self worth isn't about external accomplishments each of us is already worthy of happiness peace and love when we begin to see our a worth we can make the choices that help us flourish. Undoubtedly perseverance is critical to reaching many goals. However, if your reasons for persisting, do not involve feeding your own soul, it might be time to step away. It's okay to face the fear of letting others down and embrace a vulnerability of the unknown as Buddhist non-payment children explains in her book when things fall apart, quote, only to the extent of expose ourselves over and over to annihilation can that which is indestructible befouled in us, and quote, our most profound opportunities for growth arise as we become intimate with our constraining fears. It is time to promote an atmosphere of support where it's okay to change our minds and throw in the towel on an old goal. Dance was something I truly loved, but as I entered high school, I realized doing it twenty six hours a week. Took the fun out of it made me insecure, and rob me of other social experiences. I learned to give myself permission to let go quitting the dance academy. Didn't mean ahead a stop expressing myself. It just meant I got to open my eyes to new truce and opportunities now like to leave you with permission to close any doors in life. That are holding you back and encouragement to notice all the open doors around you.

"Hopefully they're not. They don't play it safe. They go, you know what? It can be successful or seeing it happen right now. Let's just all those crazy ideas we had. Let's just, let's just go at it. Exactly. Paul writes in now Paul writes in dot com cave GD just like you can't Scott. I know this is going to sound crazy. There's a PlayStation related question. However, I think you as an XBox achievement hor can find the common ground with us about the PlayStation trophy Hornets here. One hundred fifty one thousand two hundred ninety eight. You're not assessable. Paul writes in it says, Gregory Miller trophy related question for you, with many people reporting that Spiderman has a very obtainable. Platinum trophy that now makes I'm sorry. The has an attainable platinum, trophy that now makes three exclusive games in the last two years along with God of war and horizon. That platinum trophies, that even more casual fans can get with just a little work. Do you see this trend going forward and what do you expect from the trophy list for games like days gone in the last part to do you think all of your yelling about trophies is finally paid off, smiley, emoji. Thanks for you. Do Paul, you'll about trophies lot on this show and every show in on the Twitter and on the Instagram as you should. And in person and three. Yes, of course. This stuff matters to us. Right? Yeah. Do you care when a trophy list is obtainable like you're not killing yourself to get it or achievements in you're not at all? Yeah, here's my take on this pudding, extra difficult achievements into a game in the hopes of prolonging someone's time with your game is false depth to me. Don't use the trophies or the achievements as a crutch to try and get some extra replay ability out of your game. Now, do difficult things that are skill based that for like or hailing orient the blind for like, you know, there's some. There's a very challenging couple of achievements in there or for Titanfall to know mentioning XBox games here, but go for it, but so run the very first exercise and top in the place three of the that's that's skill based and it's very cool, but it's not tedious. It's not overly hard. It's not impossible, attainable, trophy lists. Are perfectly fine in my world because those games, Spiderman God of war horizon have incredible death on their own even without a trophies list. And that's what all game should be trying to do have incredible depth and then have this cool little thing that kind of rewards the gamers for playing this incredibly deep game zone. I mean, the three games we're talking about here right now writes about a man got or horizon or all games. I platinum in all three of them are games that once I platinum, I was like, man, I want more and I can't tell you the amount of games that I have gone for the platinum or I have a lot of XBox not. I don't have a lot, but I've gone after XBox achievements too. In the same vein where it's like, it goes the opposite where I finally finish it or I quit on it. And I'm like, I, you've left me hating, you're game and not wanting to play in overstayed. Its welcome. Whereas Spiderman, I did tap out a little early. I could have gone for more collectibles more whatever, but it was a great plan on now. I am like, man, take my money. Where's the. Take it wears new game plus take it in in God of war. Same way of like I finished that and I was like, man, this is blew my mind. Horizon bliss goes on like that. But when you put in a trophy, that is pretty much unobtainable is like, well, no, like I don't want, you know, I don't want to grind out on this. I don't want to do it in where I have to be something so specific and there is a bit of chance in there. Right. I think back to freedom Moore's, which was a PlayStation vita game that was like there's Raynham drops in all stuff to get the best year to do. I don't have time for this desire to do this. I always thought, you know, dead rising the original when that was one of my XBox seems right. Did go out and grind out the chievements in it. Right, and it it..
