"But in the early morning hours of April thirtieth eighteen nineteen Gregor soldiers was sleeping off the alcohol from the night before when the Spanish troops crept through their encampment. As the Sun. Rose Gregor's soldiers finally awoke to realize they were under attack by then. It was too late. The Spanish had them cornered. The army looked in vain for their fearless leader. That Gregor was already long gone. As soon as he woke into the commotion he had hoped out of his window and made for the ships docked off shore. The Spanish victory over the British was quick and easy. And while the soldiers he'd recruited were being captured by the enemy. Grega commanded his remaining men to sail him to safety much. Like on Amelia Island. Grega gave no thought to the men. He'd abandoned and many of them were killed in Spanish custody including Greg's far more competent secondhand William Ratna. Portobello was a disaster from start to finish but soon enough. Grega pulled an almost identical stunt in a northern city of new Granada called Rio de la Hoya. Most of the soldiers he leads into the city ended up. Never coming home again and again Gregor made the same mistakes recruiting troops stalling the mature for far too long and then abandoning them to their deaths. Just as the enemy was swooping in but rather than learning from his blunders. Greg had a tendency to shrug them off past the blame to someone else and do it all again. This habits of shifting the blame may be exactly the reason why Gregor kept falling into the same pitfalls in a two thousand fourteen study observing felony convex researchers found that most criminals could be sold it into two categories those who felt guilty for their actions and those who felt shame while these may sound similar there is one key difference between the two those who feel guilty blame themselves for their actions while those who fell shame tried to blame others for their mistakes over a period of time researchers found the criminals who felt shame had a higher chance of committing the same crime than those who felt guilty. This was because the guilty convicts but more likely to correct own behavior while the shameful ones never bothered to reflect on how they needed to change. Greg is actions indicate the he was in the same category and this may explain why he kept repeating the same disastrous behavior but though he never held himself accountable others certainly did word got out. After these military disasters and soon breath found himself shunned by comrades and even close friends Simone Believer who had given him special commendations or more than one occasion charged. Grega with treason. He put out orders to hang the scotsman if he ever returned to the South American continent. Greg was devastated. He tried to blame the failures on anyone. But himself assuring the rebels that he was a victim of circumstance but it was too late past the provider and the false charm. Everyone could see Greco for the fraud. He truly was fearing for his life. Greg and his wife disappeared for several months in his mind. The military have become far more trouble than it was worth. He could now see that it wouldn't get him to where he wanted to go but his recent experiences did give him some new ideas. Greg learned that the British were especially susceptible to the idea of adventuring to exotic South America. This meant that there was money to be made in sending Europeans overseas. What happens to them off? Though wasn't his concern but perhaps the most valuable lesson of all was that he realized he didn't need to be a decorated army man to gain the recognition he desired. All he had to do was at the pump long enough to earn people's confidence with this in mind. Greg set about putting together something truly brazen. He invented an entirely new country..

"With Miranda imprisoned CMO Bolivar took over the rebel cause wary of their vulnerable position or Leva commanded the army. Wait on cure so until they found the right time to strike but Gregor grew impatient with believers tactics. The only way that he would get the fame and recognition he wanted was by being on the front lines of a battle. So Gregor took matters into his own hands. He slipped away from curious. Oh and joined more radical rebel group in new Granada in what now? Modern Day Colombia Venezuela and Ecuador their Greco once again played up his military prowess and European training to secure a new commission. The soldiers under his command were less than impressed. They described Greg. As a Don Quixote character. He may have talked to be game but performed so poorly on the battlefield that he may as well have been fighting. Windmills for there wasn't much time to complain about Greg's leadership skills and the face of a rebellion the Spanish for advancing and before long they had forced Gregor's regiment to Cartagena a port city on Colombia's western border by late eighteen fifteen. The new Granada forces were completely surrounded. And just a few hundred rebel soldiers were left in the city. Greg was one of three commanding officers. Charged with getting everyone out of Katerina's safely and somehow against all odds they succeeded. It's unclear whether Gregor had a large hand in planning the operation but when it turned out to be a resounding success he claimed credit for the victory or the same and over the next year. Twenty nine year old Greg. Military campaigns proved enormously successful mostly because he was single minded when it came to pursuing a victory when his soldiers were outnumbered and outgunned. Grega kept pushing food ignoring the odds stacked against them. This mindset was instrumental in keeping the Spanish army from advancing and earn Gregor accolades for his bravery but also demonstrated a lack of empathetic leadership. According to Research James Anger leaders can often be divided into two categories. Those who are results focused and those who show exceptional social skills such as strong communication or empathy individuals who are more results focused were found to frequently reach their goals at the expense of those that were underneath them. For Gregor the stakes couldn't have been higher running into battle. Despite being outmanned often meant that he was putting his soldiers lives in danger. He'd lose dozens of men if not hundreds all for the glory of a battlefield victory and this understandably bread contempt among his troops. Despite the fact that Greg had simone boulevards personal gratitude. He often clashed with his commander in charge and found himself. Losing control of his men just like in Europe Grega had failed to gain the respect of his regiment so he did what he did best and simply moved on in October eighteen. Sixteen twenty nine year old Greg. I left new Granada for Margarita Island. Just off the coast of Venezuela. There he found a new commission. Under General John. Podesta Arizmendi are as Mendis. Goal was to take Florida from the Spanish and he put Grega in charge of the mission. It was right up. Drako's Ali Florida could be a huge asset for South America and as the sole commander of the operation he would naturally receive all the accolades to prepare for the Operation Gregor his wife and a group of top ranking officials sale to the United States in March of eighteen seventeen. They knew that without American support it would be nearly impossible to take Florida back from the Spanish. So Gregor turned on the charm. He promised his potential investors huge returns on their donations off a piece of property in Florida. It was never clear whether or not he had the authority to fulfill these promises but in three months he managed to raise what would amount to nearly three and a half million dollars today. Gregor also recruited several hundred American men to help fight for the cause and on June twenty-ninth eighteen seventeen Grega and eighty soldiers sailed to Amelia island off the coast of the Florida peninsula. The perfect location to launch their attack. But Gregor didn't wait to conquer Florida before staking his claim as soon as they dropped anchor. Greg declared Amelia Island. As the capital of the new of the Florida's he even created a new flag for the state and started paying his soldiers in an invented currency that he called Amelia bills but his men were less than pleased. They didn't want to use the phone. Currency they wanted to loot the island but Gregor had forbidden it and if his soldiers happened to get their hands on any treasure that the island's resident pirates left behind he. Tax THEM FOR THE VALUABLES. But perhaps what irritated and the most was the fact that Gregor refuse to mount his attack. The soldiers sat on Amelia Island itching to go to battle but Gregor insisted they lay low and wait for the rest of his recruits. He explained that without their full numbers. It would be impossible to take Florida so they waited as the weeks dragged into months. The supplies inevitably dwindled. The Amelia bills were spent too quickly and soon greg was forced to stop paying the soldiers all together but in September of eighteen. Seventeen when the Spanish forces started assembling to attack the island. Gregor's men had had enough. The Spanish army gathered slowly giving Greg as men plenty of time to prepare and yet Gregor did nothing. They were sitting ducks going against orders. His men rush to arm themselves against the coming attack. But Gregor simply gave up. He knew he lacked the skills to defeat the Spanish with such few men so he pushed the blame on the Americans. He announced that his so-called supporters had cheated him and sabotage they 'cause then with that Gregor boarded his ship taking his high ranking offices with him. They set sail towards the Bahamas and left them men to fight off the Spanish on their own. Amelia Island was Greg McGregor's first. Ob Unintentional financial con. His American investors never got their money back and the Spanish were easily able to overcome his remaining men on the island but the experience Greco some valuable lessons. Another man might have vowed to brush up on his military tactics but Gregor focused on a new skill. After Amelia Island he realized just how easy it was for him to convince people to follow his lead with the right combination of words and empty promises and as he contemplated leaving the army yet again. Grega started to wonder how else he might put those abilities to good use.

'Star Wars': Ewan McGregor in Talks for an Obi-Wan Kenobi Series for Disney+

"Let's move on to star wars. Let's talk about <hes> this rumor that you and mcgregor mcgregor might have signed on to reprise his role as obi wan kanobi h._d. Would win. Yes a new rumor has surfaced that union gregor has signed on to star in an obi-wan-kenobi series <hes> and this is something that <hes> may or may not be announced that the d twenty three expo. That's coming up but <hes> it's a rumor that came from a report from cineplex <hes> and they don't have many details for now except that gregor has signed on to star in some sort. It'll be one kanobi project but <hes> we don't have anything concrete at the moment yeah well. This is a new rumor. We've been talking about this for. I think over a year now there's been rumors that there might be over wan kenobi standalone spinoff film when they were doing a star wars stories which looks like they've abandoned at this point and <hes>. There's been rumors that they were going to do a series. Here is a wise idea like because. I feel like i feel like disney's taking taking the wrong lessons from solo star story and i think the lesson they're taking is that people want less star wars which i don't think is necessarily the case. If you look at marvel you know marvel was doing really well and they're doing three upcoming four films a year. I think the lesson is that like they want new characters actors in new stories. But what do you think all. I think obi wan <hes> obi wan didn't really get his due in the prequels of of these he was really popular. Character and people wanted to see more of him and <hes> <unk> fans have been kind of <hes> jostling four and obi wan kanobi movie movie or series for a while now and i think that if you mcgregor was sign on than it would be successful than the solo movie because solo did have <hes> <hes> what's his name alden iron rake starring and he was much less a much more of an unknown than even regular <hes>. I think that it could work and it could have. It's a it's fans. <hes> i do think that people do wanna see new star wars but at the same time i think gets too early to say what lessons disney's taking for now because we don't really know the plan for <hes> their star wars projects in the future at least not until possibly probably in a series of announcements at twenty three yeah. I guess my my my biggest problem with us. I like you and mcgregor as leon and i would love to see him reprised that role but is there really story to be told between you know revenge the seth and <hes> star wars a new hope like he's in the middle of the desert of tattooing like water yeah. He's he's watching luke from afar like chris. Is there any story to be told they're like is he. Just like uninjured taking out people that are coming after luke like i don't know i. It sounds kind of dull yeah. I mean if they were to do this. I would like it to be like a completely completely standalone thing like i don't wanna bunch of winking references to stuff we are like i didn't dislike solo but we didn't need like oh. Here's how the kessel run happened and like. I you know if you wanna make a movie. That's just like obi wan in the desert doing his own thing. It has nothing to do with luke that like that might be interesting. They may make like a western something or something like that with o._b. Wanted it but it just going to be about him. You know watching over luke and reflecting on his past and i don't. I don't think we need that. But what do i know yeah yeah i don't. I don't know <hes> i mean maybe there's a way you know solo star wars story. I know there's a lot of fans that fell out there. They've they've made this movement which is not as loud and obnoxious as the <hes> release. The snyder cut movement but they're trying to get solo to happen which i don't think it's ever going to happen me. Solo left things is open for the story to go. There was like a continuing storyline that <hes> you know was promptly stopped because they're probably not gonna make a sequel.

Hour 2: Mel Kiper Jr's NFL draft predictions

"Mel kiper junior into the show. What's up melt? Hey, guys, how you doing? Good. All right. So number one overall. Mel you have Nick Bosa going to the cardinals. You've heard the things cliff Kingsbury has said about collar Murray, he's a big fan. But he's also said Josh Rosen is our guy. So how confident are you about the cardinals going Bosa at one do guys with a mock draft you call around and you get different opinions. You try to build some type of a consensus. Steve drafted Josh Rosen. I thought he held his own for getting no help you seems like the players in that locker ROY believe in him you move forward. Josh Rosen would have a higher grade than any quarterback in this draft. If you go basically apple apple, and you try to reject a year with a year experience where they would be. But I think they're happier with Josh Rosen than they would have been a quarterback including Tyler Perry. Tyler Murray is still five nine five ten and size body type or still some things at the combine and pro day, and he's going to have to answer to give up on Josh Rosen and go that direction. I don't see it happening based on the people have spoken to. So I went with both. Over Josh Allen. That's going to be the debate the trait outta there. Do you tape boasts Allen right now, it seems like Bosa may be the lead who knows internally with their thinking. But trading out of there for team. Let's go out and get Askins. Maybe something maybe interested in listening to Mel. I'm very surprised by that draft. Order Nick Bosa is the is the foolproof, right? He's going to be a stud, but people felt that way about Nick last year. Sorry, Bradley Chubb last year, he's the best Pash rusher by so much you might as well, get them. There question marks about everyone including including. Cleveland Browns quarterback acre Mayfield, including Gregor Mayfield. Sam darnold everyone. So they're going to go, Bradley choke with not only didn't go Bradley Chubb. They went to the talented quarterback, you know, out of the big twelve who they had questions about right? Isn't that Keiler Murray this year, and isn't Nick Bosa basically, Bradley up? Well, Trump had a great year and shove ended up going to a team that utilize him and put him out there with Miller and he's a tremendous player. Tremendous young man, he's going to have a huge future and the ratio that I think when taken the war, Denzel word overcharged was what Cleveland was kind of debating there. Do you take the corner the pass rusher and put him opposite Garrett? They thought Ogbeh would come on. He didn't. But that was a decision obeyed word played well till he got hurt. I think we look at at Murray Murray is different in that he's five nine and a half. He's not six foot and a half to twenty like Baker Mayfield was and is I think that body type when you think about we've never seen before we've seen Baker Mayfield types. Okay. Before we haven't seen Cuyler Murray fight go this SARS, no conflict Kyle Murray. Guys. There's none. So I think we've talked. The number one pick four pick even a first round pick for that matter. I've at thirteen to Miami you've never seen this ever happened before. So I think some answers may become at the combine when you see him as he looked like he can hold up. It looks those guys in the eye. Does he looked like an NFL quarterback putting on a board? You know, it's football IQ should be really good the hand size people. Always look at that nine is that is that there you can do it or you can't will see hand size with collar Murray comes in at so still some things that'd be determined the answers. I got back from that question. This week is was leave Cuyler Murray at thirteen don't move him up that seems to be fair for right now in the process is that you say that Mel just this morning. We learned we got some news. Peter King was speak into Lincoln Riley, the coach at OU, and he said that ninety one percent of the past column Murray through from the pocket while at OU last season ninety one percent of this passes were from floor from Nepal. So when you look at him in comparison to Dwayne has its handicap that us was break that down. What makes? What one quarterback better than the other for the next level in light of that ninety one percent there column, right? That's a great point. Because I think you look at how do you compare? I don't remember one man's L came out. I said he's a wild card even out liar. I don't know what he's going to be Baker Mayfield. Last year was the wildcard big three. We knew it was Josh Allen Sam darnold. Josh Rosen maker Mayfield was the wild card this year the wild card again is Kyle Murray. So you compare him to Haskins asan's as a traditional guy. Everybody knows what you're getting there. Even though he was one year as a starter. We don't know we're hoping I think if you draft him say at thirteen or wherever in the first round, you hope that today's NFL okay with the shotgun so deep getting that shotgun snap not under center, basically in space Todd mcshane's but talking about the statute great set more passes batted down for six foot and over quarterback than six foot and under quarterbacks like Cuyler Murray. So today's NFL makes this happen. It's kind of the perfect storm for him coming out at the right time and the right situation. So there's going to be able to protect his body. He can slide. We know that we know how lightning quickie. Yes. That is in the back. Of his Eddie senses things that nobody else. Can't you mentioned the pocket of build? That's underrated part. He will sit in that pocket. He will wait he'll go through progressions. And he's tremendously accurate. His completion percentage. Was right. Where Mayfield was and he accounted for more touchdowns this season. The Baker Mayfield did during his great year two seasons ago. So I said three months ago collar Murray six foot tall five eleven. It's no discussion. He's the number one pick. But at five nine and a half, it makes it interesting. So let's go to the other quarterback that people are talking about many projected to the giants including you at sixth Wayne Haskins. You said something interesting to me earlier, you said that that Sam darnold. Did you say Sam darnold would've sorry? Josh Rosen would've graded out as the best quarterback in this draft to me Dwayne Haskins looks like a better prospect than Josh Rosen or even probably Sam darnold does not as mobile as Sam darnold. How what do you think of where does Haskins rate and all this? Why wouldn't you give him a great underwear? Josh Rosen was less. Year. Well, they were better quarterbacks coming out. I think that those guys were elite we had talked to years ago about those guys even before they were in the draft that they would have come out earlier. They would have been highly. They were they were considered special. And they said back in August prior to those kids coming out last year that in August that it wouldn't set up well for those and they were Josh Allen, Los everything around them. Sam darnold loss a lot around him. And Josh Rosen was that UCLA where they didn't have a ton of talent. So it wasn't set up for those guys to live up to all the hype in terms of the numbers and the way they were expected to take over and dominate gains and be spectacular. So people were kind of wondering over radium. No, you weren't there. Great quarterbacks. And I thought the people in the league is that these guys this year be thankful if you're those teams you got those quarterbacks they're better and every team in the first round from Lamar Jackson won the Baker and everybody in between those guys are thrilled to have. And they don't have to worry about this Dwayne Haskins a one year starter. That's it. And he had a little trouble struggles rowing the Penn State game. But I like the fact he got better. He learned a seems like he's going to be all in to be a quarterback. He loves the challenge and the pressure that comes from being a quarterback. But so criticism of him to say those guys better those guys were considered super elite and special entities for a two year period. So that's not a critique Dwayne Haskins or or taking a shot. Joe Dwayne Haskins on that's a fair thing to say those three. And then you throw Baker Mayfield John Dorsey number one. Look what happened. He emailed that pick. They can own that division for the next ten years because of this draft and because of getting Baker Mayfield Bubills love Josh ninety five and five they weren't a games. He started to finish. You can Nate Sam darnold. Look what he did in the last month of the season. Look around more Jackson games. He wants those teams guys are thrilled that they know they got the right quarterback for a long long time. And hopefully for Baltimore. Lamar Jackson the passing has improved. But from from winning, and the attitude they're all in on the March access by those teams are really happy where they are right now quarterback

"And I think he's one of those forty five hundred on the branded if that e best, you know, we had a tough loss Lance Almer NFL tournament, but I tried to him every day. So, you know, we got a really good group guys. We're training. Obviously, you know, the guys over at long out. I'm a the guys if I'm more kickboxing, we got a nice guys about with. But you know, bars like having my face and the it that oh. I just want to most important thing winning. The result is the only important thing in the long run. Tell me why. Tell me why fishing is better than hunting. I'm not saying that it is. I just I honestly I've never been on thing. I've shotguns a lot growing up. We grew up in a very, you know, secluded area and upstate New York. And we you know, you drive ten minutes out of town. You're not apple orchards Rican, shoot, whatever you want. So we grew up shooting guns. But I never I never I've actually been on a hunt. You know, obviously when we were me, and my best friend when I was younger collar snow. We used to shoot squirrels and frogs and stuff, but I never actually gone on or a hog or anything like that. I'm sure I'd love it. I think there's a little more involved with tracking and tracking in setting up trail cans and all that again. I'm not familiar with it. But I think it's probably a little more volved in getting into boat going outside and the spot and and run it some lures by a boat. So I think there's probably a little more instant gratification fishing, which is a little more up. My alley, but I've I don't know that fishing is better than hunting. I've never been hunting thing. So I can't I can't even say that you are the nicest madman. In the world Gregor Gillespie. You truly are. Yeah. Like it on top. Yeah. Exactly. And then you're demon. "Then this is the show. You should be listening to I've got Gregor and Bethany you tag here, and they are from the Dallas area and what they've done is. They've gone out believe it or not in three years and bought forty six apartment complexes invested in them at curly are instill thirty eight of those arrested sold they got three thousand seven hundred twenty nine units. And if you've got one red house, and they say, they got three thousand seven hundred come on guys. This is this is this is exciting stuff as we're going to break. They were talking about being sceptical about coming to a free workshop, even as they drove to the two day. They were skeptical about the two days, we're gonna. This backup Bethany you got cut off there and to say, okay, the skepticism was there. But let's talk about what the first day brought to you. And we'll get to the second day later. So talk to his Bethany about how you took that skepticism into the first day in what you came away with after one day. The first day, you know, mostly all about single family, and how everything works and David Fisher did a great job who's talking about it. But I'm thinking to myself to replace crackers income, I'm an actor by a lot of houses. And I don't wanna work that hard. I mean, the idea made I liked what he was saying. But it just I just didn't see how that was going to work for us. You know, we kind of knew by the end of the second day that either or the end of the first day, the either gonna be multifamily, or at least it wasn't going to solve all of our problems. It might make it better. But not southbound. So what was the moment? I don't know which one if you wanna pick this up maybe both of you should highlight it because it could be different. I always like to ask you sitting there. Let's say the second day, boom. The lightbulb goes off in your resume here. You talk about. You decided right then and there on that second day that you were going to go ahead and upgrade and go out there and get started. What was the light bulb that went off Bethany? That said boom now, I get it. Well, mine was the NY and how apartments are valued. And therefore, if you're an ally goes that the valuation goes up, and I literally was sitting there with me. We've had been kind of. Thank you. And figured out. Okay. So if we bought a two million dollar perfect complex, and you have five hundred thousand dollars invested in it and the value that five hundred thousand dollars. Doubled your money, and I was like on that. I think this can be done. Now, did you share that with Gregor Gregor? Did you have a different at Pitt second day? That. Saying that that really caught my eye, and I guess the other part is. How much passive income over net worth sort of, you know, different way of looking at things and never been exposed to that. And that's really changed how we approach things especially since after we've joined lifestyle. Yeah. That little calculation that I came up with twenty years ago has probably changed more people's minds about financials than anything else where you take all of your passive income from last year divided by your network, the average person makes less than one percent on their net worth per year. So it's a frightening realization for us that are highly invested, by the way, we would be considered incredibly good. If we cap it at ten percent return on our network, but we fighting somewhere between one and ten percent. Is that fight to keep everything? You have reinvested did not let your equities growing your house. Not let your equities growing your investments. It's et cetera et cetera and to keep that stuff moving. So that's a great epiphany. So you guys came out of their decided to upgrade, let's talk about. Then the next step how much education did you pick up onto you guys are highly educated people, we have massive education how much of the education did you use before you went out and bought some. All of it. We literally drove home from our I mentor appointment, we had JV Durham at the time. And he gave me a whole page of things and a whole page of videos that Gregor and I had to do before we touch him again. And literally on the way home we stopped at the bookstore and bought half of those. And immediately started reading and watching everybody we both watched all of them. That's interesting because I'm in the process of buying a classy apartment complex right now. My fiance's been in the business for twenty twenty five years as a manager. And as a supervisor, you know, what I made us both do right before we while. We're in the process by using went back and took the whole multifamily series. Again. There's just not enough education out there. You forget things it sharpens. Saw you ready to go get attack and so on so forth. Let's talk about road trips. Did you go on any of them case studies, did you go to them? Let's hear about your thoughts of knows. You've probably talk about case studies, I was usually duty. And he did case study. The beep. I went on several case studies this four totally mentioning it Tabatha Nate and getting her to go to the free workshop just staying family after family where single family is has changed their their lives and the retirement pattern as well as you know, multifamily. Deals. Case study them sharing, you know, the the numbers and such and now saying deal after deal that had been positive, and then once we we join lifestyles became preferred members we've been to every Dallas road trip. Unless we were like on vacation or such we've probably been to eighty plus or more. Also, I've been down to San Antonio central Texas road trip. Two three times now and shortly after we joined went down there, and we've even been in about sixty miles out of out of San Antonio. And you know, met some good pass those down there, and we we trade thoughts. So the the case study and road trips very, very useful. You gain knowledge as well as it's also a networking time with. You know, everybody involved with lifestyles. We'll get back to that networking aspect the second. Greg. I wanna ask you this Bethany as a financial account it. I guess you are I don't know if you're CPA or not, but accounted and Gregory's a business owner, can you imagine someone come up and say, Gregory like I'm thinking about becoming a that. Can you show me how to run one of these things and Bethany can you show me your financial statements? Let me look at them and see your payroll and your expenses and your insurance. Could you give me all it inside information? We're going to go to a break right now. I want you to think about that. When we come back. I'm going to pose that question and the questions basic simple question of we surprise it. How open people were with their own personal and business, financial information and business practices. We'll pick that up on the other side. If you want to call our number eight seven seven seven eleven fifty to eleven we'll be right back with Gregor Bethany and the Dell..

"He had a feeling that certain traits were dominant and certain traits were recessive. We know now that a dominant gene is a gene that is always expressed, but a recessive gene is only expressed if a dominant gene isn't present. The classic example used to explain dominant versus recessive inheritance is blue eyes and Brown eyes Brown eye color is a dominant gene and blue eye color is a recessive gene. If you inherit to Brown genes from your parents, you will have Brown eyes. And if you inherit to blue jeans, then you'll have blue eyes. But if you inherit a Brown eyed gene from one parent and a blue eyed gene from your other parent than you will still have Brown eyes. That's because the dominant Brown eyed Jeanne hid the blue eyed gene. But here's where things get interesting that recessive blue eyed gene. Can still be passed down to the next generation. So now let's say you have two parents with Brown eyes, but each parent actually has one Brown gene and one blue eye gene. In other words, you could inherit either a blue eyed gene or a Brown eyed gene from each parent. This means you have a seventy five percent chance of ending up with Brown eyes. But you have a twenty five percent chance of inheriting two recessive blue eyed jeans. A three to one ratio. Mendel was the one who discovered this ratio. He didn't necessarily know that the traits he was studying where genes per se, but he did have a strong suspicion that certain expressed traits were dominant or recessive in order to test his theory, Mendel bread, the p. plant hybrids to study seven specific traits. Some of these traits included plant height, seed, shape, and seed color by the fall of eighteen fifty. Six Mendel was figuring out which traits in the p. plants were dominant and which were recessive and as. Mendel grew generation after generation of hybrids. He started to notice the three to one mathematical ratio of dominant versus recessive traits as Mendel cultivated his p plants. He continued to enjoy teaching science and math to students in eighteen sixty two. He even went on a trip to England with several other members of the monastery for the London exhibitions, technology fair for someone who has spent most of his life in quiet monastery. He may have found the fair sights and sounds both thrilling and a bit overwhelming mental continued to grow peas for several years until eighteen sixty three. At this point, he was confident in his findings and ready to present them to the world. He spent the next two years writing out an explanation of his experiments for the local scientific community and on February eighth eighteen sixty five. He presented his findings about dominant and recessive traits to forty scientists at the Al Shula where he normally taught science to students. But when Mendel red is paper to the scientists, he did not get the applause. He was hoping for the scientists were confused unable to really process Mendel ideas on inheritance. None of them even asked any questions after reading the lecture Mendel had published in eighteen sixty six. He then sent copies of it out to many of the most preeminent scientists of his era. He was hoping to finally achieve that recognition and glory. He had been working for since he was a boy. He waited expectantly for the enthusiastic responses to his research to come flooding in. Instead the scientific community completely ignored him. The only received one response on February twenty. Seventh eighteen sixty seven from a well-known scientist named niggly, but negatively didn't agree with or understand Mendel findings. He couldn't even follow medals explanation of recessive traits. Mendel must have been crestfallen, but he soon had another job to keep. I'm busy on March. Thirtieth eighteen sixty eight. Mendel was elected as Saint Thomas Abbott after Abbott naps, death, the politics of this position soon occupied almost all of his time and in eighteen seventy four mental became embroiled in a tax dispute with the city. He spent the last several years of his life fighting attacks on the monastery and his stubborn tax war cost him almost all of his allies outside the church. Still he remained close to his younger sister to receive his sons in joy, playing chess with them. He never forgot to receive generous gift to him all those years ago. And he strove to repay her by watching over her children. But he was growing frail, his eyesight fading, his kidneys began to fail and he.

"Further away from its target sound designer. Ben Burtt created the sabers battle noises by playing the bass noise from speaker and then moving a microphone back and forth. The change in distance created a natural. Change in frequency through the Doppler effect. Professor Doppler like Mendel so much that he made the young man the equivalent of a TA or teaching assistant in the winter of eighteen fifty one. Sadly, Mendel didn't get to learn from Doppler for long. The professor died the very next year in eighteen fifty two. But he found another brilliant professor Andrea Svan Ettingshausen who instructed Mendel in the importance of mathematical organization. He also studied botany from professor FRANZ daughter who told him about previous experiments with the garden p plant owner was trying to unlock the secrets of how plants passed down traits to future generations owned or likely inspired Mendel to later experiment with pea plants himself. Mendel finished his studies in July of eighteen fifty three and took the train back to Saint Thomas. He resumed his role as a teacher, but he was also eager to begin his experiments. He didn't. Start with pea plants though. His first experiments were actually with mice. He bred Al Bino mice with other types of mice in an experimental, learn about the color of the offspring's for, but Bishop Shaath coach was horrified to learn that Mendel was doing experiments that revolved around breeding animals. The very idea that a priest was getting involved with sex of any kind even if it was just mice unnerved, the antiquated Bishop ban Mendel mice, breeding experiment. So Mendel decided to get around the bishops squeamishness by breeding plants instead as Mendel himself later, put it quote, the Bishop did not understand that plants also have sex and quote. Mental began cultivating pea plants in July, eighteen fifty four that same year Abbott nap, approved the construction of an even bigger greenhouse specifically for mental experiments Mendel needed a large greenhouse to grow as many pe- plants as possible. He knew that the larger the sample size, the more accurate has experiments results would be Benda wanted to experiment with the offspring of p plants. But before he could create hybrids, he needed to make sure he had pea plants that produced identical offspring generation after generation. For example, he needed the green pea plants to always produce green pea plants, and he needed the yellow pea plants to always produce yellow pea plants. He bred the plants until these traits were consistent. As Mendel grew is p. plants. His confidence began to shoot up like the budding stocks. He was thirty four now and a university educated scientist. Maybe he should take another shot at qualifying for that teaching certification in may eighteen fifty six Mendel went back to Vienna to once again, take the oral exam, but Mendel anxieties got the better of him. Once again, one question into the oral exam Mendel fled, the room he failed by default. Mendel was. So humiliated. He crawled into his bed at the monastery and refused to leave his room as father and uncle visited Mendel at the monastery and managed to coax him out of bed. Mendel recovered a month later in June, eighteen fifty six. Around this time. He took on an additional job keeping records of the local weather and sending reports on his findings to Vienna. But Mendel real focus at this point, became his peas by the late spring of eighteen fifty six. He was ready to start creating his hybrid pea plant Mendel started out by removing the male sexual reproductive statements from the rose of peas that he wanted to pollinate. This allowed him to exert a higher level of control over his experiment and keep his pea plants from pollinating themselves, which would throw off his data carefully placed pollen from different types of p. plants on this first row of plants, then covered them with tiny caps to keep the fertilizer plant safe. Then he sat back and waited for his hybrids to grow the. Dominant scientific theory and Mendel time was that children were perfect fifty fifty blend of their parents mental suspected. "Home. He was thrilled with his new career as a substitute teacher and was always enthusiastic in the classroom teaching math and science to his students. His self confidence began to increase. He started to dream of getting full accreditation as a teacher. Perhaps this would be the legacy. He left the world in the spring of eighteen fifty. He decided to apply for certification in Vienna. The tests had three stages. The first stage involved submitting written essays on different scientific topics to the board of examiners. If a prospects essays, where proved he would then travel to Vienna to meet the examiners in person. When he arrived, there would be two more stages to the exam. He would write an additional essay on a new scientific topic first. Then he would participate in an oral examination in may of eighteen fifty Mendel sent the examiners his first two essays on geology and meteorology, and what it examiners think of these two essays written by the future founder of modern genetics, not much they were less than impressed with Mendel essays. In particular, the examiner of his geology essay thought it was terrible. Written Mendel is smart. But as we've already seen an incredibly anxious young man, he tended to freeze up when taking tests. Nevertheless, the examiners agreed to let Mendel advanced to the in-person test in Vienna on August. First, the examiners instructed mental by letter to come in for his certification exams later that August Mendel eagerly packed up his bags and boarded a train Vienna in mid August half a day later, he arrived ready to prove his worth. Unfortunately, Mendel didn't receive the second letter. The examiner sent immediately. After that first one, they decided that they wanted to delay medals exam so they could all go on vacation in August when Mendel arrived in Vienna, the examiners Curtly told him to go home, but Mendel wasn't about to let them send him home like misbehaving child for once the meek, young man stood up for himself. He explained that he hadn't received the examiners second letter. He. Wanted the chance to earn his certificate. It was a bold move and a risky one Mendel had already earned the ire of the examiners by refusing to let them go on vacation. They could very well take their anger out on him by refusing to approve certification. The odds were stacked against Mendel as he began the next stage of the exam on August fifteenth, eighteen fifty. He needed to write a new essay on zoology, this was his chance to wow, the examiners and compensate for his terrible geology and meteorology essays. But as usual Mendel did not cope well under pressure, he choked on the zoology essay, scribbling out answers that made little sense. Vizo algae essay prompt, asked Mendel to list of Orion of animals and explain why they were useful. Mendel was expected to organize the animals by their Latin species names, but it was as though Mendel had forgotten every bit of science he had learned over the years. He didn't use any of the proper Latin names. And his descriptions of each animal were shockingly elementary. For example, he wrote that a cat was useful because it got rid of mice in that an elephant was quote, a splendid beast of burden need this to say, the examiners were appalled by his essay. Luckily Mendel had one last chance to prove himself. There was still the oral exam on August sixteenth, eighteen fifty Mendel walked into a Vienna classroom to complete his oral exam. It was an unmitigated disaster. The examiners peppered Mendel with physics questions, paralyzed buying Zayed's. He found himself unable to answer them. The decision was unanimous Mendel failed the exam for someone like Mendel who already struggled with self doubt. This was a major blow to his self confidence. Dispirited the young man traveled back home to the Saint Thomas monastery..

"Theological college every day and enjoyed life at the quiet monastery. Saint Thomas was considered to have one of the best kitchens in all of Austria. Mendel indulged in multiple course meals meet slathered in rose, hips sauce, rich pastry. And cream tarts and coffee or wine, the meals were sumptuous and likely responsible for his subsequent weight gain over the years, regardless Mendel wasn't above making fun of others for being overweight at one point in his early years at the monastery Mendel earned the ire of Bishop Shaath coach by making fun of the bishops. Wait to another novice when Shaath go coach, visited the monastery. The Bishop overheard Mendel hypocritical remarks, and he held a grudge against Mendel that lasted for years. Five years after he first entered the monastery. Mendel was ordained as a priest on August. Sixth eighteen forty seven. He took the religious name Gregor and began using that instead of his first name. That's why Mendel is now remembered as Gregor Mendel instead of Johann Mendel. Unfortunately, Gregor Mendel quickly realized he didn't wanna be a priest any more than he had wanted to be a farmer is old anxieties rose up to choke him as he went about his priestly duties in. The fall and winter eighteen forty eight. He was no good at easing the suffering of the gravely ill. He didn't have the words to comfort or sued the grief of family members who had lost their loved ones. He dreaded the visits where he had to asto last rites, but what was he do? He had already chosen the life of a priest. He couldn't back out now, but he also couldn't stand to perform his required duties. It was an impossible situation by early eighteen forty nine, twenty six year old Mendel had another nervous breakdown. He threw himself into his bed and couldn't find the energy to get up for more than a month. There were no psychiatrists or therapists at this time who could have diagnosed or eased mental mental distress. But added nap was shrewd enough to recognize that Mendel unhappiness was connected to his job as a priest..

"And returned home to his family's farm. He crawled into his childhood bed and refused to leave his room. He lay in bed for months as his family grew increasingly concerned. His mother and ten year old sister Teresa brought him meals and tried their best to encourage him to leave his bedroom after all. He wasn't suffering from a fever or any other obvious physical malady. He should have been able to at least help out around the farm Mendel wouldn't or couldn't explain his inner torments to his family, but it was very poor timing for a nervous breakdown. A tree had fallen on his father a few months earlier badly injuring him. Now, Anton was having trouble maintaining the farm and he really needed mental help, but Mendel couldn't bring himself to leave his bed. He lay there the entire summer in the fall. Of eighteen thirty nine. He managed to pull himself together and go back to the gymnasium. He graduated in eighteen forty and began studying at the philosophical institute. This school was meant to be a stone for students on their way to university, but Mendel was miserable. At the philosophical institute. The school was in the Czech city of ole amounts as a German speaker mental struggle to speak check the city's primary language. He still needed to support himself with tutoring, but his limited ability to speak Czech, made him an unattractive teacher to all amounts check families. He wasn't able to find many tutoring eggs in the fall and winter of eighteen forty. He could barely even afford to feed himself half the time, his anxiety and oppressive tendencies started to get the better of him. Once again by eighteen forty one, he had given up and dropped out of school. He went back home and return to his childhood bed. The nineteen year old had been the fam-. Academic prodigy, and it was likely humiliating for him to be reduced to such a state month after month. He worried about his future and his family's what would happen if he never went back to school, how is he going to bear taking over the farm from his father. Luckily for mental, his two sisters were willing to help relieve him of his anxiety is his older sister, Veronica, and her husband Alois agreed to look after the family's farm Mendel. No longer had to worry about failing in his duties as eldest son, Mendel twelve year old sister Theresa took it upon herself to ease her brother's financial burden. She loaned him her dowry. So he could afford to go back to the philosophical institute. The significance of her generosity here can't be understated, Theresa had no way of earning income for herself and would need that money in a few years to win over future husband. This was an incredible sacrifice for her to make with Theresa's help. Mendel went back to school. Cool in all amounts. But two years later in eighteen forty three. He was at the end of his rope. He was anxious once again about the future convinced he'd never be able to afford university. He wasn't sure what to do, but then his physics professor came up with an idea that would change the course of twenty one year old Mendel life forever. He suggested that Mendel could affordably pursue his love for learning by becoming an Augustinian monk. The Augustinian monks were more intellectual than many of the other orders. They prioritized education and engaged in studying and teaching. And so in eighteen forty three Mendel traveled to Brun Austria and joined the Saint Thomas monastery. It was in the greenhouse of Saint Thomas monastery that Mendel would soon revolutionize humanity's understanding of reproduction and the nature of life itself. Time for quick break. Under NAFTA one. Of the major sticking points and, talks to. Revise the trade agreement speaking at a US S. chamber of commerce event this week commerce secretary Wilbur Ross discuss the progress or media close. To completion negotiations are with NAFTA particularly with Mexico we're very. Pleased that, the new. President in Mexico, wasted no, time at, all in pulling is new trade team sir McGregor is Bloomberg news economic policy team leader. She joins us now for more on this story from our Bloomberg ninety nine one studios, in, Washington DC so Sarah how would. The US and Mexico settle the their. Differences over, cars so that's the big question right now what what is in this deal you know. We're hearing that. That the US Mexico are getting. Closer to, some, sort of agreement on autos and there are so many contentious issues in these NAFTA talks but without. A doubt autos is. Probably going to be the hardest one for them to agree on so it is. Significant that if they are getting closer to some to some sort of idea of what they'd Want that basically the lion's share of the US trade deficit with Mexico is cars and we. All know by now that the, trade deficit is really big car parts right and car parts and we know that the trade, deficit, is. Trump's the, thorn in Trump's side when when he talks. About trade so it's really at the. Cracks of redoing this deal so it really can't be overstated how important it would be if Mexico and the, US can can find an, agreement on that but. The big question is where is candidate seems like the US and Mexico are sort of in the boardroom. Right now, at the negotiating table and Canada's in the waiting room and can? They even make deal over cars without. Involving Canada Mexico is the biggest? Source of, car imports to the US Canada's right behind it at number two so how how this practically, would happen it's not clear right now but it would be. Significant if there's some, progress so tell us what the sticking points have been in this area of. Automobiles and auto parts so the US at one point you know had said they want a significantly larger portion Parts of a car percentage of a car to be built from North American made. Parts so they wanted something, like seventy five percent from the current agreement was sixty two point five percent Mexico wanted a little bit lower lower than that and I think also. The US really wanted to make sure that these these parts? That basically the value of the car was coming from higher wage work Trump's biggest one of his. Biggest concerns has been US jobs going. To lower costs Mexico in, the automotive sector in the manufacturing sector and I. Think the US wanted to try and guarantee that higher wage labor was going to be an. Aspect of this agreement put into, writing now so that those jobs could be in America Do you have any idea why the Trump administration has shut Canada out of this out of these talks and are the Mexicans on board with keeping the Canadians out at this point Well I think big turning point was the election of the new president in Mexico to lie I Trump himself has said he's spoken with Anglo since he was elected. And it really seems like there's a priority right now in Mexico as well to get a deal before. This new president in this new administration in Mexico takes over on December first so I think that was a little bit of a more of a willing partner with Mexico right now and, also the US has been pretty vocal. About the fact that Canada has, sort of tried to tried to go a little bit around them to influence lawmakers in the US industry groups and and the US doesn't like that it, wants to negotiate with Canada and it thinks it's, sort of, a little bit of a, sneaky way that candidates taken. To try. And get its voice across by, talking to these congress people who are then trying to go to Trump you know complaining about. NAFTA and saying make a deal with Canada that's great and so I think you know there's there's kind of been a little bit of tension there between the Trump administration will pay Back there So what's next So you know still candidates says, and even, Mexico you know this is. A trilateral deal we want to try and keep this NAFTA as. A trilateral agreement so one element of this is that some people are thinking about is that the Trump administration would wanna get Mexico onboard with a. Deal over autos like I said earlier is a really tough a tough. Nut to crack and once he has Mexico on, board with it hoping to, draw in Canada, then, in say look we've we've agreed between the US and Mexico over one of the hardest, issues are, you you know put. It on them are you going to get on board with? This as, well you know there's some more talks that Mexican economy minister is going to be here later. In the weeks definitely going to find out whether they can. Actually achieve, that you know it's still very much a. Work in progress and I think from there we're gonna have to see what the strategy is from the US Mexican candidate to try and keep this deal together as a. Three, part deal Sarah thanks for bringing us up to speed on all. Of this ceremony, Gregor Bloomberg news economic. Policy team. Later thank you Coming up on Bloomberg politics policy power and law acting EPA chief Andrew Wheeler faces. His first congressional hearing and his first big test up on the hill. Canada's Liberal party considers decriminalization of all illicit drugs

"Basically just heroin yeah probably does make it easier to do something like taper off if you know how much you're taking which is something that walgreens were provided to you and most drug dealers will now that's correct it's not uncommon for people in the black market to buy even if they're getting it from the same dealer that dealer may be getting it from different sources so even if they think they're getting the same amount it may be one you know one of the batches is stronger than the next one and they don't know that until they actually inject it and then it may be too late which is what leads to a lot of overdosing as well where people take more than they thought that they were going to be taking the although heroin is the only drug i know of where if you tell somebody somebody somebody that someone else overdose they may well respond really where to get the stuff that must be fired never heard that junkies if you talked to worked at a law office for a long time retract the question so back to the story here from canada they say here again they're considering possible decriminalization of all drugs it could mean adopting an idea that's gaining steam across canada as the number of opioid deaths continue to swell earlier this year canada's new democratic party became the first major political party in canada to fishery champion the idea weeks later the city of vancouver recommended the federal government immediately decriminalized personal possession of illicit drugs quote we are witnessing a horrific and preventable loss of life as a poison drug supply continues to kill our neighbors friends and family unquote that according to the mayor of vancouver gregor robertson of course we would you may recall the mayor of toronto for a while had himself his own drug addiction problems rob ford was his name and he got caught smoking crack on video years ago ended up dying what does the mayor's being crackheads that seems to be the crackhead occupation wipe your window with a squeegee or the mayor so weeks later getting they recommended this their stance is backed by prominent organizations from the global commission on drug policy to the world health organization many of them point to the experience of portugal which in two thousand and one so seventeen years ago did away with criminal penalties for simple possession and consumption of illicit drugs the move was coupled with an expansion of treatment and harm reduction services such.

"We're not going to be happening and i think you're not gregor looks on skeptical a i try to explain to moby gregor is midlife malaise how everyone was passing him by can you relate to the feeling of like have you ever had different points in your life helped like like surpassed by your friends who were you know yeah like there's always going to be someone doing so much better than knew that if you spend the time to look at it you're gonna feel bad about yourself i got my nemesis full court into him for a while was and then so he was my nemesis i was just being beaten publicly and battle because he was always more successful always selling more records always more popular always cooler and so depends on who i was comparing myself to over time like other people start selling more records getting better reviews you start showing fewer tickets and then as the two thousand rooms progressed a career waned and other people's escalated you know i don't go to visit my record company and they have my picture behind the reception as desk and in one day i show up at his jack wage spent your behind receptions doesn't like what yeah i mean i think the only way to hear that honestly is in this but scream between totally a head nodding hundred percent agree and totally like you to for you to say because you're looking down from the mountain looking up your like i'm a fucking not that kept him out because all i need his mind but but really indicated that chief of fame is that if you don't have it can be yourself up if you don't have.
