"For me, it's Diego Linus. Really? Yeah, he's the 12th guy. He's the first guy off the bench and let's think about Argentina for a second, okay? How that game was for 60, 65 minutes. You couldn't get the ball when you had the bike. You can really get anything going. You were banking on Alexis Vega and choking losano with speed. You needed a player to get on the ball. He didn't play to take a little bit of steam out of the game, sting out of the game. Maybe absorb a Fowler too. That's one. Versus Saudi Arabia towards the end. Everything was very vertical. Nobody got on the ball. And I feel versus Saudi Arabia, the way that it was going. It was bound to be a red card bound to be a penalty kick with the player who so shifted. He's proven it in games and World Cup qualifying comes in sadio stack over Panama, very shifty, draws a penalty kick, which are all Jimenez converts, but he is that player when you need somebody on the ball. He's a guy who I think in those moments wasn't available. Now all the other players were like for like Chucky lozano is very similar in skill set as a Julian tuna. They're very vertical players. So is alvarado. Gives him credit. Why bring alvarado when you've got an tuna? Why? I don't know, but especially when Linus is such a different profile. That's the thing. The profile player. Now we've criticized Gregor halter picking profiles. But this is one of the cases where I think profile player would have and should have come into consideration. So I agree with you. To me, Linus is the biggest miss because he's the most unique. I might have changed my mind had Henry Martina had the game that he had tonight, right? Had we got a full group phase without a real performance from a number 9. I might have then gone to a Santa Jimenez or a chicharito. Between those two, who would you have brought? If you could only have brought one, something Jimenez. Really? Over chicharito. Yeah. Based on form and baseball. Has had a good season with the galaxy, you know? Yeah, but they've been safe stop for a while. And if you're going to pick guys who have stopped for a while, we saw it. You're right there. Yeah. Santiago Jimenez is not only a player who's informed who I think could help you stretch the field. You could use them as a speed player and those double 9s or as a 9 just in general. But also what you gain with them for 2026, which I think is very valuable. Yeah.

"Is in a slump. And is in one of those swamps that 9th shouldn't be in heading into the best or the most important moment of their lives. We're talking about a player that has 7 goals for the U.S. men's national team, but if we analyze those 7 goals, two of them were in a 7 zero win against Trinidad and Tobago, one was in a 5 win, 5 one win excuse me, World Cup of qualified against Panama. And the other was four goals against Granada. Goals are goals. But when that competition is increased, whether it's Mexico, whether it's Canada, whether it's thought about whether it's Morocco, Uruguay, you start seeing some lapses in his play. You start seeing these blind spots that many see that maybe Greg Martin doesn't see. And that is worrisome for a suicide Ada because confidence is key for a striker. So I think it's everything but I disagree a little bit on this idea that the goals have truly dried up, right? I know we see the last 7 there. If you go over his last 5 games in Major League Soccer the last three of the regular season and the two games in the playoff, there's zero goals. But if you go to the 5 games immediately before that, I'm not picking random 5, just the next 5 before that, he had 6 goals in those 5 games. So I think we can say he streaky and right now in this very, very brief window, he is struggling. But if you look at his last 14 games and this is where the big concern comes in in Major League Soccer, he has one assist and the story, the narrative around Jesus vereda is he's a ten baked into a 9. He brings all those others into the game. That's his strength. Now, I'm not saying assists are the only metric to prove if you're bringing others into the attack. But one assists in 14 games, that's not nearly the production that we're likely or that we have expected to see from him in MLS. So for me, this is everything, especially her when it comes to his playing time chances at the World Cup. We're going to get to it later in the show, but it doesn't happen in a vacuum, right? Everybody else in this conversation is being productive while he's struggling and that has to be acknowledged here. That's the thing. You've got Josh Sarge being productive. Being productive. You got Jordan peacock being productive. You had Brandon Vasquez also being productive while we can't really say he's part of that conversation. But then you have his maybe not quite as productive or not quite impressive in the way that Gregor halter told us he should be productive. And I called that game Austin versus Dallas. When they were down two goals, a step as Nico Steves has moved, the guy who operates the same way as Greg berhalter, who is part of his coaching tree. His decision was to put in Franco had a 35 34 year old center forward and drop Jesus vereda his leading goal scorer if I go out, I won't score four goals all season, drop him into a creative attacking midfielder roll. So that's got to tell you something there. And now the worst part about it is he doesn't have the next game to try to get better in the eyes of any, or many. It's over. And no more Major League Soccer for who's this video that this season, he's got to wait and train in a camp with U 20 players and the rest of the Major League Soccer players who are out of the playoffs. So Austin advance at the expense of FC Dallas in one Western Conference semi final. And the other Western Conference semifinal, we

"But when you don't score the goal. And when you miss it in that manner and it gets likened to Chris one Delos, he's missing his Belgium. That is a certain headspace. You don't want to be in if you're a finisher. It's about confidence, it's about belief and those kind of things can hinder your confidence and believe to his credit. He stepped up in the penalty. And buried it. But as a forward with that asterisk, because many of those people out there will put an asterisk on him because he's Greg's boy because he's a Major League Soccer player. I think it constantly be proving yourself and that is something that is painful to see, and I'm sure for him, painful to endure. Yeah. It's everything if they lose because one of the things that we've been talking a lot about with these MLS guys is you don't want that inactivity, right? Had they lost because of that. I mean, forget the psychological toll. There's a physical toll from the inactivity that he would have had. But to your point, stepping up, converting the penalty and he was confident when he went up there and took a sense of all of the other way. I mean, to me, that's a huge, huge penalty, because it a helps you advance, of course, Velazquez finishes it off with the incredible panenka. But it gets him that confidence back. So to me, it can't really be everything. Of the forwards in the pool. Do we classify him as the worst finisher? Because I think, you know, we think about whose clinical. I don't think it's fair to call Ricardo peppy clinical yet, but in terms of finishers, I think you have to put peacock one, then right now, based on what sergeant's doing, he's number two. Peppy right now, if we're going off hot, he's ahead of that eta. Off of finishing absolutely, because for data isn't there for his finishing. And Greg brehal has said so, Greg brehal has gone out of his way and say he looks for different things from his 9. Not necessarily a finisher because if so, you'd have a player like Jordan P fuck or even a Josh sergeant. But you level that out, right? If fede is the best at everything else, but the worst finisher. It doesn't that way heavily, the fact that he's that he's the lowest in that pecking order. Finishing is, I'm sorry. You're a forward finishing his. How much of the job a decent number of finishes in Major League Soccer? That's the thing. Everybody uses Major League Soccer against them. Yeah, he's cool off a bit. He's going off a little bit. He's filled up a bit, but when you talk, it's fair that you're not talking about his finishing ability. By the way, none of those other forwards have four goals in a game and I know Granada and say what you will say what you will, but you play against the same competition. It's the amount of opportunities he's been given under Gregor halter that rub people the wrong way. Okay. One more thing on this FC Dallas, Minnesota game. And it falls under the category

"Public. You think I'm not part of this setup. You think I shouldn't be here. I think I should be here. He's shooting his shot and I respect it. Yeah, I think kind of what you're getting at is the squeaky wheel. Tends to get the oil, right? Maybe if you say, hey, remember me, remember me? They won't forget about you. I'm interested in your point about him like breaking the code, right? That this is something that happens all the time. Obviously national team engineers talk to their players, but you really shouldn't say what those conversations are in public. It is smart. It does keep them relevant. The bottom line though is, does he actually deserve the call up? Like, who would you pull out? Who would you take out? Does Muhammad actually have a case to be in the national team right now based on who's in the team and his level of play? You saw the last window, those two games were the midfield was not exist in the second game and got better because of Tyler Adams, but when he went to players who needed possession, looked at players who needed to drive the ball 'cause Eunice Musa wasn't there from point a to point B point C, there was no creativity. There was no player that felt comfortable with the ball at his foot. Here you have a player who feels very comfortable, playing centrally with the ball at his foot. And in the final third is productive. So yes, he should be in the mix. Yes. He can play over players. And the way things are going with players dropping like flies, this is a guy that getting his name out there at least in Gregor halter's little orbit so if it could happen. Actually, I'm with you now. Remember my big complaint after the game against Japan was how like technically inferior the U.S. players look, this guy has all the technical skill in the world. Let's update you on some health issues surrounding the U.S. men's national

"Japan, aside from a shot on goal, hurt, what do you want to see from the United States men's national team against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday? That would be nice, right? Listen, we've heard many of pundits say this many a time. Taylor 12 minute alludes to this all the time, his plan B, right? Right. Gregor halter wants a system. These players that you have maybe don't fit set system. But you're still trying to put in a square peg into a round hole. What do you do when that doesn't work? That's what I want to see because as Greg berhalter alluded to everybody in this very platform and interview right there, what we saw. He's got 5 starters that are missing. So that's half your starting lineup right there. I have your starting lineup. So if you don't have them, who will you be? If you can't have them because you also alluded to health issues, come the World Cup and how every manager is praying, who are you going to be? So I want to see a U.S. men's national team that, if you can't play out of the back, if you can't do wing progressions, if you can't have a 9 who's only good at interpretation of space and movement and creating things for others, how can you be effective? How can you generate goals going opportunities and not give up so much at the backs of your midfield is in plain back to goal and chase and chattels. Shadow, excuse me. That's what I want to see. All right, so I wrote down a few things here. I wrote down emotional response, right? Because in a tournament, I figure you might have something that goes against you and you have to respond to it. I don't think we can say that we saw an emotional response after the first half against Japan. Clearly, Greg berhalter wanted that. He made four changes. Did we really see an uptick in performance in that second half against Japan not really? So I think an emotional response where you see an improved performance here would be something fans could feel really good about. Another thing I wrote down here is finishing. It's obvious, but there may not be a whole lot of chances for this U.S. team. It would be great to see somebody finishing. Could you imagine the conversations and how they would shift if Ricardo peppy puts in a goal, a brace, a hat trick in this game, what that would mean, not just for peppy, but for the confidence that fans would feel around this team, the only other thing that I'll throw out there and I want to get your response on this quick is something you said in the postgame show after Japan. You said we may now have a blueprint for how to beat the United States and there's one thing that I saw in that game against Japan. It was not just the back line, but a lot of the back line, a lot of the center backs being unable to deal with the press. So I don't know that we're going to see press from Saudi Arabia, but that would be the worry to me is if we see a press, how does this team handle it? Because I didn't handle it well against Japan and to your point, other teams are watching. Yeah, 'cause when you're the guy who's pressing, that's your speed. But when you are being pressed on how you deal with that, that is your speed of thought. And that is a big issue there. So how the not only defensive line, not only the center backs because it's not always on them, but the midfield and how they respond to the movement of showing and being an option to said center back or even if it's the center forward. And now we can come into the midfield and be another option. That will be important, but that blueprint will be there, especially because this is a very young team. Listen, it's easy when things don't go right when you get punched in the mouth for the plan to go out the window. But if you've been there, if you have something to fall back on, that speaks volumes. A lot of these players may not have the World Cup to fall back on. That's a fallback on, but they have the experience of playing at a high international level. So they need to do something to find that plan B to get themselves out of what other teams are going to try to put them into, which is pressure. All right, there we have it. The last game before the World Cup the final dress rehearsal, U.S. against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. We got some

"All right, our time to talk number 9 is we got a lot of candidates for the U.S. striker position. It is only one assist hurt, but should Greg berhalter, call up Ricardo Pepe for the upcoming September friendlies with all the other options available to them. Remind me a few things, where are these friendlies? You're up in Europe. A few other things. How many more games until the World Cup? Two, two, unless we get another friendly somewhere in the mix before the world. Right now, as we know, there are two games left for the World Cup. So, but it got a puppy coming off in a bismal time in the Bundesliga. He now has a new lease on life in the vizier, remind me again, if there's one player you had to say, save Greg berhalter's job in the opening window, World Cup of coffee. You say you say it, you say it. Yeah. Who was it? Ricardo peppy with the goals against Honduras very early on in the first week. Showing against the Salvador, it was an even worse showing time. For that. No, no, no, no, no, but listen to this, okay? It was a terrible 45 minutes where you're down when you're down a goal, okay? It's Ricardo Pepe, who has a hand or foot in all four goals that you score in the second half that give you life. Breathing room. It's also Ricardo Pepe that then goes on to score against Costa Rica and does well on the other games that give you some time to operate. Some time to make things go well. And it's a Ricardo pep who sought out advice from Greg berhalter about where he should go in Europe and it's Greg for halter, who heavily influenced him to go to osberg. So in Greg berhalter's mind, maybe some consciously he's going to feel indebted to him. At least two afford every opportunity to him to lose this position. I can think of no better way than saying, hey, here are two games in Europe. Show me what you have. Show me you can still do it because time's a ticking. I think he's in the September call up and I think this is beer halter's way of saying, here's your chance. Okay. Last chance probably, right? Because if you give peppy this shot, you're taking that chance away from somebody else, so I wonder who you think it's going to be. I mean, I'm imagining maybe there's three strikers called into this group, which we think is going to drop around the mid week this week, is it peppy and sergeant and Ferreira is it Haji right in the mix? Is it Jordan P fock like who is going to these call ups with peppy? If I think I can play Gregor halter's hand, how he would Nico estevez being a friend of his being somebody who was in his coaching tree. I see Dallas trying to get into that MLS playoffs at a higher seed in the Western Conference final. I would think they've got a good understanding that probably it's just fed it is on that flight. You would see more of a Euro based forward system or pool. I should say for Greg berhalter, I would think it's Josh Sargent. It is Jordan P fock, and he will go with Haji Wright. Haji right, all right, so Brandon Vasquez then getting left out as well. As you write, you expect. Okay, so we're both of them. Both of them are four a four forward call up. Look at that. What an interesting, interesting roster twist. That was the question. All right, U.S. national team against Japan. That's the first of two games. That's next Friday on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Cover starts early and by the way, football Americas will be live postgame. On ESPN+. Don't miss that special edition of the show. Turning our attention

"If you can get on the field. Jordan, the 25 year old, who is on an absolute role with Swiss club young boys. 13 goals in his last 17 games across all competitions, one slight problem, Greg berhalter's treated him a bit like a pair of non Nike sneakers. He struggling back in his only start of the octagonal against Canada back in September, not received a call up in the subsequent four windows. Once you take on it, I love Jordan P fuck. I love what he's about. He's a goal scorer. And a few national teams have the luxury of keeping goal scorers off their roster. So it's been a long time coming. He should have been on a long time ago. I've been in situations like that where you're on a good goal scoring record and you're not getting a sniff from the national team. It eats away at you, but it also burns that fire. It lights that fire for you and it becomes like a big F you every time you score a go like, all right, you're going to hear me. All right, you're going to notice me. And he's there right now. He's got a big part to play in this World Cup qualifying window. I think he will score some big goals for the U.S. men's national team. He's just the most informed goal scorer you have. You don't have the luxury of keeping players like that out. And he's also has a skill set that most players don't have on the national team. I mean, his movement in the box is very good, but he's a big man with that movement. I mean, he gets on the end of things so well. And in a situation where Greg pro halter prides the wing progressions and that play, and you can have players who are very good at in transition, maybe late in the games where you need a goal, like a la Honduras in the concatenations league semifinal. He could be that man. So I think he's got a huge role to play this World Cup qualifying window. I just hope Greg gives him that platform because he's a guy that's proven it. He gets an opportunity to go he's going to bury it. I imagine him turning up at camp with a little with a little Swiss Starbucks mug to try and curry favor. I do wonder how much pressure is going to fall on Christian Pulisic. A player who already admitted back in February that he put too much pressure on himself to quote save the U.S. team. I also wonder what message he'll have written in sharpie on his undershirt going into this one at that Josh kale. Oh, the great GFP tweeted guys, with all due respect, can you ask me before you post a pic like this? We got a move to our backline. We're trying to guess who will be our center backs. It's so bloody hard with Greg. It's like trying to speculate on crypto. So I'm going to ask you about the emission of one John Brooks, even with all the injuries, not called up easily the most experienced U.S. defender on a squad almost utterly bereft of experience. He's 29 years of age, a World Cup footballer, ditch from the squad clearly pained by it. I found this words actually hanging spoke to Derek ray, incredibly moving. My American identity is at stake and identity some have questioned over many years. We Americans have all been down and out at different times, but we always fight back. I plan to do the same. You know, I've spoken to many in football who said that this is really a matter of player and coach butting heads. But what do you hear and how do you understand it? Let me start off with his comments about his americanism as a stake. I was confused by you're no less American by not playing a game. He's just as American as anybody else and we think his father for his service and we thank him for everything he's done with the U.S. men's national team. So that should never be in question and people who think otherwise are idiots. I will say we need to cut the BS with this situation and I will say this to John Brooks and to Greg berhalter, nobody's buying that is strictly football. Nobody is buying that it's form. That's not the case. The man is a key contributor in the Bundesliga. He was one of the most experienced players in the pool. He definitely has a place to serve in this national team. Now, whether you feel that starting or not, Greg barter, that's a different question for Greg berhalter. But he definitely should be part of this squat. Something happened. There was an incident a moment there was something that broke the camel's back. There was something that made Gregor halter in his eyes that made it unforgivable and he's excommunicated. It can't just be form. You don't get tossed out like that over form over a bad game. Now, people will point out, well, look at him last World Cup cycle against Mexico and against Costa Rica. Last World Cup cycle for taking that into account, you should be here this World Cup cycle. There'll be a lot of players who wouldn't be still here. Or a lot of things we would do very different. So that should go out the window. He's a very experienced player. I don't know if he'd be a starter. Right? Because that's up to Greg brahl to decide when he sees him in camp and how he wants to play. But the fact that he's not even in the roster tells me there's something greater. So I would ask that we cut the BS from both. And just say what it is. If it's the incident versus Canada, where his body language was less than favorable towards Greg berhalter, and that was caught on camera. If that's the situation, just say it. If it's something else, just say it. But nobody is buying that it's only football related. I love what you're saying about the American identity thing. It reminds me when I made the film behind the scenes in the run up to the 2014 World Cup when I live with the team for four or 5 months. One of the German Americans who was hoping to make the team laughed at during one film session with me, he said, you know, all the German Americans are getting tattoos of the American flag on their arms just so they can show improve that really, really American. It's ridiculous and then the next month camp when I turned up to film, that same gentleman turned up with an enormous star and stars and stripes and screaming eagle on his thigh going down to his ankle and it was really, really beautiful. Which brings us to the couch. Greg berhalter triple G three E's too, but they want to talk about them. To me, this window I mean, when I'm trying to be optimistic, this has to be his moment with a young, inexperienced squad to me. This is where he coach has to step up, show he can lead. This is really a big chance for Greg, who is yet to truly convince the step up sees this moment expunge the doubts and fears born of kuva. And prove that respects built more than just on, I mean, the Starbucks been there city mugs and tweeting your own sneaker game. Respect is built on delivering results. This is where we need.

"Slightly more lighthearted, or at least what I thought was more lighthearted. Are you cool with it or from last night? Are you frozen? With it Greg berhalter caught on camera taking a picture with fans during the game, her could happen during an injury stoppage with the U.S. up three nothing are you cool with it? No, no, it's bushy. I'm not cool with it. It's disrespectful to the opponent. Partially. Oh my gosh, come on. What overreaction? Is it why? What's so bushy? The answer answer yes or no, you cool with it. And then with it. It endears him to the fans and endears him to his players. Who's got a problem with this? The opponents have a problem with this. Oh, yeah. Do you think there's anything in the world that would have motivated on dudas last night? Please. I'll tell you what, if I see this if I'm gonna do this, the next time I play against these guys, I'm two footing somebody. Really disrespectful. Get that offensive to you. Offensive. It's very bush league. You can wait 7 minutes. You can tell a fan. Hey, 7 minutes, I got you. I know the explanation that they were waiting around at the fan. He felt bad for the fans staying in the cold. Guess who's fault that is? Yours? It's yours. Okay, U.S. soccer, you and U.S. soccer for putting the game there. Wait 7 minutes have some respect for everybody. And especially the opponents. And guess what? You know what was equally as bad was U.S. soccer doubling down and trying to celebrate it on their social accounts. That's even the worst for me. But this is just like Gregor halter may not like honestly, I think he's a good and classy guy, but this just a missed one. He missed it on this one. Yeah, I know you were a big mad online telling the U.S. soccer official account to delete their tweet. How about that? So three games left for the United States in World Cup qualifying march 24th a way to Mexico, home to Panama after that. And then the qualifying cycle.

"When what you need is to take a step back to take a breath to sit down to look at a game from a different perspective a different angle anger. Excuse me, angle. And maybe yes, get angry. Get angry, that Gregor halter benched you. Angry enough that you want to prove yourself to everybody. Every time I hear a Christian talk, and I know that's maybe his personality as well, you know, I don't really care about these things. You know, he's very soft spoken. I want to see him angry. Not frustrated. Angry to prove himself. I'm the best American player step. Three years ago, we were here in LA on a show called nacion and you said he was already the best American player ever. I want to see improvement every single time he's on the field. I want to see him get angry with this teammates. I want to see him demand the ball. I want to see him be effective. I want to see him not be predictable. Every time he gets the ball he's cutting in when he's on the left hand side. I want to see not just big moments against Mexico. I want to see consistency. I want to see him. I want to see him prove himself here on the national team because guys like Landon Donovan, guys that Clint Dempsey, when they wore that Jersey, they proved themselves. That's what the greats do. He can be a great, but you have to prove it. Didn't you just warn Greg berhalter against destroying the confidence of a player like Matt Turner, destroying the confidence of a player? Well, those are two people. Who's clearly not having a great time with his club. If the thing he looks forward to coming back to the national team and he gets benched, what's that gonna do to his confidence sir? If Ricardo peppy or Matt Turner get chance after chance at the chance and aren't proving themselves, you go out. Christian Pulisic should be the same. I actually think this would benefit him. He's one of the best players on the team. One of the best players in North America, but he's not having a good moment. And maybe this perspective, this refresher will do him good. Just so I'm clear, like, we do both understand what's at stake for the United States in this game against Honduras, right? I mean, you're saying what for me is a huge game potentially a must win and you want them to play without the face of the program. Once you've done the same player what's he done in the last two games? No, nothing. Is he not the best player anymore? Not the last two games. I want to win this game, don't you? If you're the U.S. men's national team, you want to win this game. He had a one V one. One V one, what I mean, Johnson. And when he should be sharp, when he should put him on his heels, when he has to take him, it takes to the left scuffs that you can save the trip for whatever you want. He wasn't sharp enough he wasn't his Christian self. I honestly think this will be good for him and the national in Timothy way has been playing well, Brennan aronson is an effective player. Even though his club form is also equally not as great, but I think a refresher will do him good. It's a huge three points, you got away Mexico, away Costa Rica and home against Panama in that last window. Wow, that could be a tough,.

"Canada or sorry in Nashville against Canada when he's arguing, I don't want to say arguing he's glancing over at the bench and displeasure in a what are we doing type of face because there's still zero zero versus Canada because things aren't going the U.S. mustache team. Wait, that's about the most negative thing I could say about John Brooks. This right here sounds like a club. To me, because I've seen this movie unfold plenty of times, player negotiations. They've offered him a new contract. The player says, wait a second. I'm free summer of 2022. There's a World Cup, November, okay? Why do I resign right now? Why don't I sign on a free? Why don't I leave on it free? Why don't I see what happens in the World Cup and then that transfer fee is money in my pocket and what can the club not do? We can not allow the player to leave on a free sudden things come out. That explains the Wolfsburg perspective. What about the comments or what's attributed to burr halter in this report from Bill? That's what would worry me if I was John Brooks. What's the connection there? I mean, Greg halter played in bonus Liga. Okay, can you know people with the build? Sure. Marcel Shay for the sporting director was his teammate at 1860 Munich. So you're saying you're saying that both the national team and his club team have turned on Brooks? No, what I'm telling you is it doesn't make sense. You said hit piece and I think that's a great way of putting it because Gregor halter has never said John Brooks is a problem. Has an attitude problem. John Brooks doesn't get called in. What's the first thing we see? It's John Brooks, put it out a press oppressor. And it's, hey, I didn't get called in. I need to do better, took the high road. And Greg berhalter never once said this man is a problem. His attitude with the group is a problem. So until somebody says that. Until we have an official report whether it's Wolfsburg or whether it's U.S. soccer federation or whether it's Greg Warhol to himself or John Brooks's mother, what is this? John Brooks, of course, one of the many champions are one of the many Americans involved in the group phase of Champions League. Did you see the draw for the knockout phase herc of championship? Which things? Yeah, exactly. Which one? Things.

"Already on top of you. Look, brilliant strike, no question about it. Obviously, any goalkeepers frustrated to get beat from 35 yards, but take nothing away from the quality of the strike. In the end, look, I agree with the guys are saying, you know, the physicality that Jamaica put forward, they struggled to react to it. So what do you have to do if you're a U.S. team that maybe is a little bit smaller, but maybe a little more technically gifted, it's that quick one two touch passing where they can really be successful. And I think the quality in midfield I don't know if they were worried about getting injured. If the pitch came into play, what it was, but there was a lot of giveaways, unforced errors, and they weren't able to really get any kind of rhythm passing the ball in midfield to create problems in the second half. And look, you don't have to be the most physically gifted team. Obviously, we know Jamaica's big, strong, fast, and they play to that, but the U.S. also didn't use their strengths for a majority of this match. Taylor, I just want to go back to Zack Stefan, of course, a player who let's face it probably play what 5 or 6 matches, maybe FA Cup, and that's it between now and the summer. Now and then maybe the World Cup. Where do you stand on him and his lack of first team appearances in these sort of moments where maybe he should have done better? First off, Dan, that was a long winded answer from Casey Keller to basically say Casey would have saved it. Casey would absolutely handle it. But that's not the point. The point is is that I'm on record and will always be on record, is that I want my goalkeeper playing consistently. I don't care about the high ceiling of a goalkeeper. I don't care about the prospects of a goalkeeper. A goalkeeper has to be playing consistently because in game moments and keep in mind in the second half Zack Stefan came off his line for no apparent reason in Antonio with a better touch, that's two one. Corner of the 18, he didn't need to come off his line at that point. Casey knows exactly what I'm talking about. So there's a lot of rust. There's a lot of indecisions from a goalkeeper that isn't playing consistently. Matt Turner was playing consistently is playing consistently. I understand the ability to play out of the back from Zack Stefan in that connection with Greg burr Holter, but I want my goalkeeper playing week in a week out, so these game types of scenarios, he is fresh and he is on top of it. I'm not saying Matt Turner would have saved that shot. I'm not. But what I am saying is you still see glimpses of Zack Stefan showing rust and indecision in some key moments and at some point we've seen that in previous games, that's going to bite them in the end. How much of an issue is that hurt? I mean, it could be an issue, it's valid point, you want your goalkeeper plane weekend week out, but if we're gonna have a conversation where he's gonna be put down under a microscope every single play and it's like, well, if he didn't do it a day, Matt Turner tomorrow, the same thing's gonna be set to every single player. I agree, came off and he hesitated, but I think that hesitations because he realized that I'm going to get hurt here, or I can get hurt you. I'm going to let off. Not maybe because of the rust that we'd have seen that in the past from Zack Stefan. I think you gotta take the good with the bad one Zack, Stefan. And I don't want a situation in case can elaborate on this where I'm doing this rotating chairs kind of thing with my goalkeepers and I'm making them doubt themselves and I'm putting them up against each other in a public eye. We don't do that with any other position for the U.S. men's national in this pool, but we're going to do it with the goalkeeper position. I just think Gregor halter may be unknowingly created a goalkeeper controversy where there shouldn't been one. But it's a fair point, isn't it? You want your goalkeeper playing? I mean, ask Casey, ask Casey if he wants. Your goalkeeper thinking I create an air, I'm out. At no player should think that. No player should or just feel like I'm under observation. If you make a mistake, you know, you go get drop. That's just the way that life is. Well, it should be the best way for every single player, but we only have this discussion when it comes to Matt Turner and Zack Stefan. It's crazy to me. Taylor what, in particular, you think Greg bearer will be reflecting on from these two matches that maybe he didn't realize was a problem. That's a good question, Dan. Because I think the one thing that Greg burlton hasn't gotten enough credit on is his ability to adjust. Obviously, he has made some interesting decisions, particularly in first haves and then change that in the second half and got a response from these players. And so naturally the team has adjusted to that. I think his 11s in both Mexico and in this game in Jamaica were spot on. Obviously, I think all of us assumed a little bit more time for Christian Pulisic, but obviously that's a delicate situation with him being out so long. I think it's gonna be very interesting to see who's available not in the December camp, but more so in that next World Cup qualifying cycle because if everyone is together and everyone is fit, what is that 11 look like with Giovanni rayna, Timothy waya Brendan, Christian Pulisic? Who are the 9s? I think he's gonna have some interesting decisions to make. And I think it's gonna be a fun discussion for all of us on the outside because I actually think there's some depth and some positions that everyone on the outside didn't think they had. And yet in saying all of that, if Tyler Adams gets injured, they're absolutely screwed because there's absolutely no one else within the pool that can play as a 6. So I think that's what he's gonna look at is where that depth turns into his best 11. Gentlemen, as always, thank you very much. Taylor mentioned it, of course,.

"Be a goal threat. All right, herk. So I think has suspected was your surprise of the roster when the roster was dropped? Do you think we might we might see him against Jamaica? Yeah, I'm sure we might see him against Jamaica. Huge credit to Taylor 12. What a gem he let out there. That's a big guy. Yes, this is interesting. I like that you said, this is some Pep Guardiola Manchester City. 'cause this goes back to me thinking. Are we trying to reinvent the wheel here? Are we trying to put Tyler Adams as a right back again? Are we trying to get too cute? You've got guys like Josh Sargent. You've got guys like Riccardo Pepe wait a second. Herk isn't that the point? Why does Manchester play Manchester City play with a false 9? 'cause they don't have a 9. Is maybe great for halter admitting he doesn't have a lot of finish. He's gonna go you have Riccardo peppy, you have Jordan P fuck, you've got Josh Sargent and Daryl deacon and if I'm these players, I am rolling at my eyes. I'm rolling my eyes hearing this side. I'm rolling my eyes hearing this come out of Taylor Taylor's mouth. Really? Gregor halter said this? Let's not get too cute here, okay? You've got very good wing players with the ability to combine and do damage outside with pace and ability. Very good central players who join into the attack and you're gonna get cute with an interpretation of space type of player. I know that's just for it isn't a good player. But I want a 9 whose gold dangers. I want to in nominal 9 who could be a focal point, a central point for those players. I don't want to get cute. I don't want to go back to reverting, hey, Tyler Adams as a right back because I think he could interpret the space here, or he could join in as a defensive midfielder when the balls on the opposite side. These players under the right circumstances could all be very dangerous players for you. Saying his suicide, I mean, ultimately be your 9. Wow, that to me right now is crazy. Back to Pepe real quick for a second. How long do you stick with a guy who goes cold? Because you mentioned, you know, he hasn't scored in three straight for the national team. He hasn't scored in 5 straight for club. He has this court since September for FC Dallas. And what's coming up here? The MLS off season. So when I look ahead to January and the three games in January, the one thing I can tell you for sure is that unless you're cardo Pepe gets transferred, steps into a team starts starting and then starts scoring. He's not gonna come into that call up. Hot. So do you think there's an open competition come January because it does unless peppy does something in this game. I don't see how there's not. Well, I've been thinking it's an open competition since Ricardo peppy even started, you know? I don't think we've ever said this is Ricardo's Pepe's and that's it. It's his Toulouse. So when he goes cold and he doesn't do things off the ball or with the ball. If you're not scoring goals, what are you doing? And thank moti Carlo Pepe. He's expanding on that side of his game. I don't think he's been playing bad. I think he's been a decent player. In fact, if you're the games he didn't score, Costa Rica, Jamaica. I thought he was very good with the ball. I thought it was very good back. The goal of that is Lincoln play was excellent about him getting others involved in associated to the final third was very good at him. This last game probably not so much and he was a bit wasteful, but that's gonna come and go with age. I mean, he's 18 years of age. You still learning the position. I'm not too worried, but you're absolutely right. Come that off season, MLS off season. If he's not running all cylinders, you got to go with the next. All right, so USA Jamaica then Tuesday in Kingston. It is not the same Jamaica that the U.S. saw in Austin should be a very, very difficult game. Let's go back to Friday.

"Conditions may play a factor in who he plays. He says it's a bad deal. It's not the greatest field greatest conditions. So that's true, right? If I've ever heard, if I've ever had any complaints about Concacaf fields, it's there's too much grass on the field at San Pedro sula, and there's not enough grass on the field in Kingston. Could be. So if you think the field is a factor, maybe that's sore ankle on that field versus that opponent isn't quite the best scenario for Christian political. And you already have the luxury of beating Mexico at home. You got the three points that I thought were needed this window in that game. So maybe you can try managing it in the same way you managed the Mexico game and have him coming off the bench. Don't push him. If that's the case. You don't think he can go 90 for you and that's why he didn't play against Mexico. Two more, three more days isn't going to change anything with Christian political ICM coming off the bench. What about this idea that you put out last week that says you need to start for a guy that's not getting consistent run. Like you need that warmup. You need all that all those things before the game. Yeah, I don't even know if he plays this game. Honestly. Really? Yeah. There's a significant. They don't need them. If it's one nothing in the second half and you don't need an attacking sub, you think you think it's just, hey, saving for Chelsea? I think that's I think that's what Gregor halter and his mindset is at right now. And I don't blame him. If he thinks he needs to protect this player because there's a chance he can re injure himself or set himself back any further. I think Gregor halter doesn't do it. It keeps Thomas Tuchel happy, and it's another, you know, luxury earned. Correct from the three points picked up against Mexico. One other name that you did have in the starting lineup is Ricardo pepi, but I got to ask you about peppy. Because we're now going on three straight national team games where he hasn't scored. I.

"Deal with Vanessa. And the brief stint he played against Costa Rica that he was a tremendous in the limited time we got him to see him, but he's really expanded his game. I thought he struggled in the goal cup. I thought he was one of the big players. We had hopes for big hopes for and he struggled. While he's putting some of those doubts to RAS, he's getting to be a better player on and off the ball. Both sides of the ball and venetia. And I think it's a player that gives you a little versatility. Yeah? He's not that ball winner 'cause part of me thinks he's gonna go with Kellen o'clock instrument. He likes that physicality. He likes the athleticism and the defensive effort that Kalani Costa gives you. But if you really want to add another element of buildup of play, creativity, even set pieces. I think John Lucas is your man and I would go with luzio. Okay, so you mentioned boozy oh, you mentioned Kellen Acosta. You haven't mentioned two names in which we know are options for Greg berhalter, but also we know will upset some U.S. men's national team. Sebastian legit, Christian rolled on. What are the odds that you think we see either of those two guys either as a starter or as a sub in Jamaica? Pretty high. Yeah, I think rolled down as a sub absolutely. You're going to see him Greg berhalter enjoys what he gets out of a busy roll down and roll down to his credit. He creates things. He may not get on the score sheet with the goal or an assist, but he's always one of those guys that presses the right moment creates things for his teammates. He's a very good teammate, which is very hard to find at any level. He's one of those guys that Gregor halter knows what he gets from him and Sebastian legit. He just seems to be one of the confidants of Greg ber haltern. I know he's at his up and downs, but Sebastian legit at his peak at his best U.S. misogyny is a very capable player. I just don't think he's in a very good moment right now. Short answer here. We know we're going to see at least two changes because they're forced. We know he's not going to start scallion so you're not going to get that change which is one that you want to see. You did just beat Mexico to nothing like, don't you have to reward the other 9 guys by keeping them in the lineup, especially without the need for rotations. I would almost assume that you can't really make changes here. I wouldn't make try to you hit it out of the park when you said. This is a two game window. You don't treat it like a three game win, and you think you have to make these changes. So why did you want to put scallion for yedlin? Because I want to get him that experience. I think this is when you get his feet wet. We talked about it in the pre game show in the post show about how Joe scally should have been brought in last window. Well, if you're already late to that, and you think sergino dest might not be durable, you think there will be a chance for Joe scally at the right back or left back position because he's played both with glide back. You bring him in, you get him acclimated and you get him going. This can no longer be an excuse about this experience in Concacaf. When it comes to Christian Pulisic, the term judgment call was used her. Your judgment, if you're the manager, do you start Christian politic in Jamaica? Well, this changes with the Mexico win. You have the luxury of having that. When you don't need to stress out and think Christian political has to be your go to guy and also Greg for halter has already tipped his hand. He said that the field.

"This is the U.S. men's national team. Is a player like we spoke about Linus last week who seems to do well against this type of opponent. I would have stuck with them there. And then also in the midfield Andres guardado, you're taking out the captain of your team. I don't care how old he is. Hold on hold on. You've been retiring this guy for four months. I have. I'm not thought the martino. I have. Here's the thing. Doctor martino, it's not the second or third game of a window. There are only two this window, by the way. Okay, so you don't have to worry about his fitness. You get him in the very first game. In a big game against an opponent that he knows very well to take out your captive seems like a very risky move for a lot of reasons. The biggest one is if a backfire is on you, that's a lot of pressure on Tata martino. And then you mentioned the center back situation. You went with actor Moreno, who's often injured. This season, especially for the Mexican national team. And I saw when I saw the roster the U.S. put out the U.S. men's national team. It screamed of course, he also said it, he wants a more dynamic team. His screamed like, I want to use John hernan's handbook. John herdman's blueprint against Mexico and the azteca where Canada just random ragged, where it was physically there were too much. And if that's the case, actor Moreno for pace is not the man you want there and Johan Vasquez is played how many games with the Mexican national team the full team? Tata martino has had him in the stands. It seems like there are a lot of changes too many if I'm Tata Martina right there. Can I make one more point about the lineup that I put forth there? Because we on this show often question whether Major League Soccer adequately prepares its U.S. players for World Cup qualifiers. Okay. That question about Liga mekis is going to get answered in this game because the two outside backs Rodriguez Jesus guyardo are legal meckes, lifers, and if they go up against the 11 that you chose, not what you think Greg berhalter would do. They'll be going up against Christian Pulisic and Brandon aaronson. That's gonna be a real tough test for those guys, isn't it? And I think that's what Gregor halter's hoping. I think he understands that the outside backs fly. And they're more involved in the attack than they really are in defending. And he understands that those two center backs, especially doesn't matter which one of the Senate midfielders is protecting them is going to be a very slow tandem if you will right there. So he'll take his chances physically, but you're right. You, you of all people go at Major League Soccer and his players and these FIFA fixture windows and maybe thought that might get into extent has gone after Major League Soccer as well because how many Major League Soccer players are playing with this Mexican national team in this FIFA fixture date this many, okay? Well, now Lee got Mickey's will be on display. So let's change gears a little bit, herk. We'll keep it here with U.S. and Mexico, but we'll go a little bit more historical perspective. Now, if I were to ask you if there was a quintessential moment, not a goal or a game, but a moment in this rivalry, there's something first come to mind. Yeah, I mean, the very first dose of those who said it comes to mind. An image an image beyond a game beyond a result like an image. Yes, maybe because I know him, but it's Gucci weigh you Andre borghetti. It's those two is the face off. That's when I think of, that's what I think of when I think U.S. men's nationale versus Mexico. This is exactly the image I think of. So that was back in 2005 in a World Cup qualifier in Columbus in the latest edition of tales from the pitch. We're gonna hear the Mexican side of that story from our good friend and ESPN deportes colleague. Voila. I still use..

"A game changer. Here's the thing, though, step, you need him to be on the field to be a game changer. We're not going to argue his quality because I think he's proven it with Chelsea's problem with the U.S. men's national team that when he plays, he's very productive. But here are the overall numbers, the stark numbers with Christian Pulisic. In the last two years, November 2019 to now 25 games. Of those 25 games, he's only been available for 7 with the U.S. men's national team. Now that's injury. That's COVID. That's him being rested because Gregor halter doesn't want him with the U.S. men's national rather having been preseason when it's about whatever the case may be. He's not available. He hasn't proven himself to be a durable player. And this is worrisome. So, if you can get 55 65 70 minutes out of him against Mexico and his quality minutes, I cap him there. I limit that there. Because I don't think you need to stretch him or overwork him or even play him against Jamaica, or else we're talking about another situation where he goes back to Chelsea injured and it's just a snowball of trouble. That's just it, isn't it? I mean, there's no G arena. Now we know no Sardinia deaths. We're gonna talk about that in a second. So some of your options potentially in that part of the field are thinning out. You need them, but you really can't risk them specifically hurt because of what you mentioned. This is already happened before. He carried a knock into the first three World Cup qualifiers. He gets hurt and Honduras and then as we all know, misses the next couple months. If I'm Chelsea, you know that they're watching what's happening over these two games in the minutes that he's being asked to play. They want him to come back healthy. He needs to come back healthy and the U.S. needs to send him back healthy, 'cause this is not a player that can be missing any more time. Not at all. Not at all. And he comes to that first qualifying round in World Cup qualifying against that assault on that COVID list. So remember it's just always something he's a player that you need to play in big moments, but you need him available. So Christian ballistic in, as we mentioned before, sergino.

"Mind. Now you don't think that was down to Ross? Seki game in 66 days. First and 21. I think that's down a misfortune because it's one of those plays where Sergei odes is keeping the guy on side, the ball comes right back to you. There's a player moya who's in front of you. I think he's distracted by moya. I'll let that one slide. It's very circumstantial, but Gregor halter is creating a controversy when there didn't need to be one. And if there's one player. One situation where you don't want a controversy, well, you don't want somebody doubting themselves, it's the goalkeeper position. Is it really that important? Does the rest of the team care? Will there be a Turner group and a Stefan group or is this something that could really be a quarterback controversy? I don't think it affects the locker room. I think it affects those two guys. And that's the most important thing because no matter who you put in, now he's under pressure. Now I can make a mistake. Now I gotta act this way. Now I gotta play this way. Now they're always watching me. Everything you do will be scrutinized will be analyzed. It's a difficult situation for a goalkeeper to be in. If we're just looking for like the reason why, though, it can't be formed, because I don't think you can point to Matt Turner's form, and you definitely can not point to Zack Stefan's form. There is no form. It doesn't exist. You know, he doesn't have tape in the last four months. So you can't say that he gets to start because of that. Any chance he earned the number one job back? In this game? 'cause I'm thinking about Mexico. It's gonna be Turner, right? I don't know who's gonna be. I don't think it's not gonna play a lot between now and then. Yeah. I don't know. This is the controversy now that Gregor halter is created for himself. And this is a problem. If you ask mat Turner, if he's going to be the number one, do you think he's going to say, yeah, I'm the number one? You think he feels certain about that? I don't think so. This is a little bit more than people are leading on. Zack Stefan, the oldest player in the starting lineup on Wednesday night at the at the old old advanced age of 26. The average age herc on this team, 22 years and 229 days. As I mentioned, the youngest starting 11 ever for the United States in a World Cup qualifier. Is that little fact nugget? Is it something is it nothing or is it indeed everything? It's something. I'd love to say it's everything, but that's not gonna be a guarantee of success. It's not nothing because you just don't tout a young lineup if they're not talented players. If the ceiling isn't high. But how many times have we seen talent at such a young age, not flourish, not.
