"I think David itch for kino was playing very well in Medvedev lithium is coach being like I don't really believe in my game and it's probably going to end up being a 6 four 6 four result he said. That's why he had that sort of the rolling sort of motion because he said just continue play and keep playing you play yourself into form. So that was probably one of the biggest results of the tournament because if you hadn't got that together, we wouldn't be seeing the resurgence of him here. Are there other results to say anything? I think he did well to pick up a two 50 last week, but against Medvedev I don't think it ever looked like he was going to get that done after that first set. I think he had a really clear game plan in the first set and then he was just trying to pull the trigger too early. Like he was out of ideas. And you have to be really patient against someone like Medford, especially on an indoor court. And for me, it was kind of the lack of point construction in that last set. It just felt like a bit of a foregone conclusion. So there was some good matches earlier in the week I'd say, obviously with holger, it's a shame that he was injured and he had to pull out. I think he'd been playing too much tennis. I was shocked that he went from Davis Cup straight to Montpellier and then to Rotterdam. And I think if you take an example of someone, someone like eager, who's taking some time off, she looked fresh as anything, and she's even fresher after barely stepping on court this week. So I think maybe it would be good for some of these sort of players who are really plugging your weight at the moment. Such as senator, he's playing this week as well. To take a bit of time and kind of get their heads straight and get themselves into peak condition because it did it like physically. He was struggling. It's quite difficult with scheduling, isn't it? I did enjoy the fact that we did get a Stan Wawrinka Richard Gasquet second round match in 2023. That's a three. It's funny you mentioned Gasquet because I think this cues are newest segment. Who is the current top freshman? In 19 ranking. French male player I believe in the top 50. He seems to be. Wow. He just seems to be perennial, still doing it. On the tour, which is fair blade. He's got an incredible longevity. But yeah, I was almost a little bit surprised because yeah, because favreau defeated public. I know public has been on a bit of a losing streak. I think he stopped that today. And Gasquet came through PCBs. So yeah, I was quite a vintage vintage throwback match up there. And it was nice to see I think Grigor Dimitrov get to a semifinal. I think it's always nice to see him play well, get to the far end of a big tournament. And you had some very good wins, particularly against de manor, third set tiebreak, was very, very fine. Had an incredible passing shot winner on match point. Quite light seeing Dimitrov do well in that bottom half of the draw. Yeah, I'm surprised bublik has any rackets left to play with and to borrow one I heard. That's the way to Kim. Shouldn't go smashing them around, should he? And just one last thing on Rotterdam, Joel, I know you are a purveyor of slightly odd tour level trophy. The Rotterdam trophy explain, it's like, I can't really make kettle turn. It's like, it's a very odd one. It's like a square that YouTubers get as a kind of a celebration if they get like a 100,000 subscribers. They go like a plaque. And I wonder if that was the inspiration behind what Medvedev is seemingly holding, which I feel looks more like a plaque than a trophy, a window of an is hotel? Yeah, it looks like something that would be in the waiting room of a spa or salon. It looks like something you nicked from the ice hotel in die another day, doesn't it? It does a bit. But at least he's got himself a pretty hefty paperweight, you know? Yeah, or doorstop. But we know anything goes, anything goes when it comes to making up the trophy design of an ATP and WTA Tour event. It's stackable Joel. That's quite good. Stackable, unlike some of them, which are quite pointy, you might not get the Paris masters. It goes very true, yeah. Yeah, at least you can transport the roster on one home. That would be quite cool. Actually, for like, imagine like rapha, you know, he's one like Barcelona like 11 times or whatever and actually each trophy was like a jigsaw or a part of a puzzle that completed a mosaic or something, I don't know. It'd be quite funny. Let's have a look at what happened out in Delray Beach, which is the ATP two 50 event. Cam norrie, I think, was the defending champion here, but had elected to play in Argentina instead. Which we think is to do with the fact that he was in Colombia for Davis Cup just prior. So yeah, defending champion not out in Delray Beach. But a whole plethora of as you would expect American players, as it's on their home turf. And it was an American player who won because it was Taylor Fritz, who came through to clinch this title up against the Serbian mirror mirror in the final 6 love 5 7 6 two. So a bit of our second set hiccup for Taylor Fritz, but he managed to come through pretty comfortably either side of that second set to get the title. This is 5th ATP tour title and his first of the season. Chris, what did you make of the final and Taylor Fritz this week? He was the top seed. So theoretically on paper, it was his to lose looking at kind of the other players that we had in the draw. Yeah, I think it's one of those two 50s that we talked about. I think last week that you expect the top seed to come away with a bit like organic center, took the two 50 in Montpelier and I think it was similar results in the WTA where not similar because we thought sakari would be the top seed that would seal it. So it doesn't always happen. It can be especially playing at home. It can be a tricky one to get over the line when there's all that home support for you, but obviously he likes playing in front of a home crowd. Picking up the title, obviously Indian Wells last year. In terms of the tournament as a whole, I think it's obviously a very dominated by mail players. It's a shame that Ben Shelton didn't go further. I mean, American players I should have said, but I was going to say I was one.

"I've got no doubt that he will win the title after what he did today. Kim, I swear the practice match between Nick kyrgios and Novak Djokovic was more competitive, I feel than this match against Alex. I know that's really scathing. Joel, that is savage it ended with the bull. Yeah. That really, I'm not sure. Just completely fair, but apologies ADM. But I mean, I don't want to roll my eyes at this, but I think when you're going to I'm rolling my eyes right now because we all watched him play that last one. I genuinely thought that he might have retired if he'd lost that first set against Grigor Dimitrov the way that he was sort of walking about the way that he was gesturing to it. Almost limping at times and suddenly it's held overnight and maybe it's the gluten free diet. I'm not sure, but it seems to just suddenly have become injury free. And I think for me, the only frustration I have with it is that you kind of give the benefit the doubt obviously because why would you if it wasn't a problem who wouldn't be kind of having it strapped? It wouldn't be talking about it. But then this one is kind of talk about as though it's not an issue at all. I didn't think past this. He didn't know until after he found Alex deminer no challenge at all that he'd be in such a good condition for this match. So is there an argument though to say and again I'm being totally savaged to Alex de manor that he just wasn't able to be at a level that brought that injury out of Novak Djokovic like Grigor Dimitrov was able to do in the previous round. That is definitely potentially a reason for this. But having seen domino players saw in playing Stockholm, he's got he has got more on his shots than you think. But if you're putting them up against each other, this match was never going to go if Djokovic was fit more than more than three sets. Is our just becoming a bit of a journeyman? I know he's still quite young, but I don't think he's got the weapon. We are being all very savage, aren't we towards Alex to the north? Is he a better version of John millman? He's not going to reach the highest heights. I think we're just slagging him off our potentially. I don't know. I think he's I mean, he's reached number 15 in the world. He's coming in with his 24th birthday. Yeah, I've definitely been a bit harsh then. No, but I think it's a sort of people that will break through and get the results. They have to have these big weapons like we see people, like set to pass, who has the weapons, but hasn't been able to convert. I mean, someone who sets a pass doesn't think has big weapons. No tools at all. Rublev, we think he has a big forehand, but he isn't able to put it together. So if you don't have those weapons, you don't have those things you can rely on in those moments, and it sounds like it was a bit of a ball machine for Djokovic, but doesn't mean he won't be able to get up to number 15 in the world again, but I don't think it could be lifting silverware. Yeah, great practice match. Another player we spoke about, who we say is a player who people look at and doesn't think has weapons, but has had a very good career is someone like a Roberto Bautista ragout. And I think consistency can get you to around about kind of top ten. And maybe that's what Alex and nor could potentially get to, but yeah, at the moment, it just feels like without those weapons, it's not really troubling the top players and movement is one thing, but there needs to be more to it than that. And it doesn't really feel like he has that X Factor at the moment. I mean, talking of Roberto Bautista, he hasn't made it into the quarter's Joel like you potentially. He came close. Thank goodness. Tommy Paul got the best of him in four sets. You called that, didn't you, Chris? I don't know if I did. I think I might have gone the other way, but I will say that I did call that. I think I said something about consistency. I think I said that Tommy Paul is someone who isn't the most consistent on the tour of play and gets someone who is one of the most consistent people in the tour. So I do think that Tommy Paul's level of tennis is higher. And if he could put it together, I thought he would come through, but if it comes to 5 sets, I probably think I said Batista agree that. But I mean, the Americans, that haven't quite the tournament. Yeah. I mean, Tommy. Three, three. Yes, he'll be playing Ben Shelton in his quarterfinal. Maiden grandson called final for both of them. Shelton knocking out another American JJ wolf in America. Yeah, and Ben Shelton, he's only on his second Grand Slam appearance. So, you know, he's absolutely fantastic. Yeah, so many Americans, it seems. I think we've got three American called finalists at a Grand Slam. The first time since, I mean, on the men's side anyway, since the 2005 U.S. open and in Australia the first time in 23 years. I'm just looking at that list, agassiz Blake Robbie Jeanette pre that is a that is a blast from the past. What a name. Which begs the question, who is the American number one? We talk about the French number one, but I think I've lost track of who the American number. Is it still Taylor Fritz? Surely. I guess. Yes, it is. Fritz TFO, well, might not be dependent on how cool to perform. Well, yeah, we'll get on to Tommy Paul. I should say. But I'm not sure if he can go above for it to put those Indian Wells points. But now there's ten Americans in the top 50, which that seems like it's almost like the Russian women from a few years ago when they were really dominating the top of the sport. But it does feel like they're all kind of spurring each other on. They're all sort of in that age bracket from 20 to 25. And hopefully there'll be a lot more competition between them to try and be the American number one. That would be great to see. I don't think it's like France in 2009, you know, like a decade ago where it was like they had a lot of players in the top 100, but they didn't really have like a superstar. I'm looking at this list of ten American men for its TFO quarter Paul brooksby. I mean, Jonathan Shelton wolf, a pelican shima, how young they are, I think, is what's very promising there because you've got a lot of stars who I think are yet to reach their potential and it's going to be really fascinating to see how they go and I think obviously Ben Shelton is the one most people's lips at the moment in terms of the biggest prox. Maybe him alongside Jensen brooksby. But there's so much to like I feel about Ben Shelton when he walks out onto a tennis court because he just seems to take everything I feel in his stride. I have to issue an apology I was going to say we did say for a while that Casper Casper rude had been Ben Shelton and now after this performance, it looks like that's not such a bad result and Cincinnati losing the first round. And it happens a lot, doesn't it that you see an upset and then suddenly he fast forward and they're sort of a tall leader. When you see Robert Burkina take out Serena Roland Garros, then she wins a Grand Slam and you see these people who put together these results and then suddenly they're right at the top of the game. So that is an apology to both Ben Shelton and caspar and will stop using his name as you've been Ben Shelton. I think it's time to retire that one. He's no longer a verb and on that. Let's have a quick break. We'll be back in the second half where are we looking at all of the action from day 7 of the Australian open. So do not go anywhere. "Time champion Novak Djokovic. He was on court on the rod laver arena taking on Grigor Dimitrov at the same time that Andrew Murray was on the second court in doing Andy Murray things. Look, it was a straight set victory, I think dementia might have one or two regrets about the opening set. Yeah, they set point in the tie break. But basically it was very Grigor Dimitrov and it was very Novak Djokovic. I think the story continues to be the Djokovic. The hamstring, which he is absolutely not dampening down, talk about every time he's asked about it, he says, yeah, it's really bad. I don't know what's going to happen, but I just hope that I can keep playing through it. Yeah, I was in the commentary box on rod laver arena, the way it works when we're doing a match on the second court with Andy Murray there. We're watching that on a monitor whilst out of the window is the center court match with Dimitrov and Djokovic. And look, it started with Dimitrov really struggling for his range and he got broken immediately. Djokovic was a breakup all the way through that first set and looks like he's just going to take it quite comfortably and then he did start to struggle physically. Something started to hurt him in that hamstring. Plus Dimitrov started to play a little bit better. He got the break back. He took it into a tie break and honestly, if he'd have won that tie break, I think we could have been still there right now to be honest because that would have obviously extended the match anyway. I think it had given Dimitrov some believe. I think one of the problems for Djokovic at the moment, and I think the reason he keeps mentioning it all the time is the same reason that Andy Murray doesn't hide that he's feeling terribly, he doesn't try to put a brave face on all this stuff. It's scaring the living daylights out of Djokovic, a twin. He's not used to feeling twins. So when he feels he panics and he thinks it's a disaster and he his way of dealing with it is to share. He tells you about it like somebody who feels rough and feels better when they talk about it. And I think Murray is the same. How bad is it? Well, it's just really difficult to know. And even he in his interview afterwards on court actually no, I think it was with yours, but I heard that he'd said that look, sometimes it feels great. And I run about and it's not hurting. And then I'll do one movement that's a particular movement that's set it off and I really, you know, it really makes me stop in my tracks and so look, Dimitrov extended in the third set, pushed him, it was very dim and shocked to be honest, Catherine, he had some lovely moments. The crowd loved him. But he doesn't do enough to win these matches against those guys. I mean, he's one one in 11 now against Djokovic, and really that tells you everything. Yeah, I think it's just a question of who can who can push Djokovic enough to really make the injury like a massive problem for him and honestly on his side of the draw I'm kind of looking at one name and that's you know because he beat a fit Novak Djokovic in Paris. He's got the game. I think the rest of the players

Kathy and her husband adopted them from a foster parent than when they were about ten weeks old. The senior citizens now and spend most of their days and nights sleeping. Now I don't know which one is Eli one is violet one is long haired one is short haired. The short head one has quite the energy about him slash her, it's a very Yelena roster penko bad call. Bad line call facial expression that that cat is giving off and I like it. So thank you to Eli and violet and to Kathy for bringing Eli and violet into our lives. Pictures of them will be in our newsletter this week as we'll match that and all the usual funds and make sure you subscribe to that. We've got our mascot, David's got Darwin, I've got Carter Matt's got the dearly departed general, did anybody get points last week, Matt? No, tough week for all of us last week. My prediction lost to Grigor Dimitrov. That is a pathway, isn't it? Who did you have? He did the mature beats. Rublev. Oh. I mean, great for Grigor. But he hasn't been winning winning many matches lately. And honestly, him being in Rublev's path, factored into my prediction. So I got that horribly wrong. Billie Jean, who made a very brief and dramatic cameo in this week's podcast, sorry for that, she's funded by Billie Jean King and Alana cloth. Our executive producers and top blokes are Chris Albert Lee and Kyle weing Gartner, and Matt, we have shoutouts. We do, yes, and we've been doing some admin this week and lots of new shout outs have come flooding in, which means that from now until the end of the year, we're up to 5 shout outs per show. So I'm going to rattle through. Oh. Okay. We've got Laurie Porter from Wimbledon. Oh, Wimbledon. Great. And down the road from me. And me. Yeah. Great. Thank you, Lori. I think there are any tennis lorries are there. No, I don't think so. No. I've got a cousin, Lori. I think he's rebranded as Lawrence. Anyway, it's a child he was Laurie. Wow, okay, I'm taking that in. I would have thought you would go the other way. You would rebrand as Laurie. Lawrence on the birth certificate, Lori is a child, and then, yeah, there you go. Nothing happened via deed poll or anything. Nothing dramatic. Just when you decided you wanted it, we called what was it? Kathy with an IE. Kathy with an IE. That was it. That was your rebrand. Sometimes did a little heart on the eye. Anyway, thanks, Lori. We've also got Eric skirmish horn from New York, another tennis location. Yes, are they all going to be tennis locations? Well, no. We'll say thank you to Eric, and we will move on to Anthony bonici in Malta. Oh, get this me. Hang on. Maybe we should, all I had, Eric booter act, for Eric. Yes, me too. Anthony Anthony wilding, who's that? That comes from spending time in the Wimbledon library. He won very early editions of Wimbledon was a great player from New Zealand, but died very young in World War I. I believe. Gosh. Gosh. Okay. Thank you, Anthony. Possibly our first Maltese shout out. I think so. We've also got Karen sivani in Greece. Oh, these are good names. Hello Karen, presumably supporting Maria thackeray this week in Fort Worth, probably got very excited about the start of the year at the start of the year match when you predicted big Greek things for 2023. Apologies Karen. Yeah, sorry. For Matt's mouth writing checks that neither Maria Zachary knows Stefano sits a basket cash. Yes, I think it's been a strong podcast, but the worst line of it was Matt's never wrong because definitely definitely. As Karen can attest to and sacrifice. I was trying to make you look good in front of either that. And last shout out is for bev Neal in boom. Hello, bev. My old hairdresser was called bev. Oh. What happened to bae? You just moved up. You know? It was when I was a kid she used to come to the house and do my mom and occasionally my brother, he could steep, steep to it. There wasn't an incident. No, there was no incident. Well, this bev says that her two very best closest friends these days were people she met in the Wimbledon queue in the mid 80s. Which is lovely. Oh. Oh, bev, I absolutely love that. Thank you. Well, lovely note to end on, thank you, bev, thank you to here's a test. All of our shout outs today. What are you going to go through? Oh, hang on, okay. Now you've tested me. We got bev. We got Karen, we've got Eric. We've got Anthony and we've got who was our first one. He was the rebrand. Lori. There it is. There we go. I did it. Hi everybody, 13 minutes before the top of the hour, we update markets every quarter hour here on Bloomberg radio. Down volume on the New York Stock Exchange was tripled out of up volume that tells you the story, the S&P 500 down 2% or so, the NASDAQ down 3%. We have a lot more concerns now with about a gloomy, economic outlook globally, and more talk of U.S. recession, U.S. consumer expectations down to the lowest in about a decade, South Korean consumers are also pessimistic. The sentiment index there dropped to 96.4 this month from one O 2.6. Also, the rise in oil prices and other commodities restock to concerns about inflation not that they really went away, but we had seen a period when commodities had weakened and some investors had hoped that, you know, that was a harbinger of more to come. The concerns in the market outweighed China's move to reduce quarantine times for inbound travelers, that step had lifted hopes of a shift away from COVID zero policies. Chinese officials either because of hubris, they didn't want to admit that they were making a big change or perhaps it's actually what they're saying is that the decision was not a sign of reopening. It was just based on a shorter incubation period of the omicron variant. So that may take a little bit of the sort of heat out of the rallies that we saw yesterday the CSI 300 was up more than 1% and the Hangzhou index valid. The futures today are decidedly lower. All the N one 36 O 7, the big short, the big Japan short, still very much in play there. And the yield on the ten year treasury now 3.17% WTI, one 1189 a barrel. "No, but we'll bring it up. And here we are, David. He had he won his opening two rounds. In double quick fashion, he was looking great. Is there ever going to be a time? In my life, when Grigor Dimitrov doesn't win one match and made me start thinking something's changed. Nope, no. No. And I look, I didn't see the match. I just saw the scoreboard to Canova and I didn't expect that at all. So yes, I thought on the tenth anniversary I might change my fortunes. I listened to episode one this morning when I was predicting Serena Williams to win the French Open and she lost in the first round. So it's all entirely in keeping. I don't think we've actually said what David's prediction was for Dimitrov. The prediction actually just assumed that he would beat Diego Schwartzman. It did. Today. Yeah. The prediction was Dimitrov could trouble Djokovic. I think he could have done it. No mention of Diego. Because no one could prove you wrong. Had he got through. Can Diego Schwartzman trouble Novak Djokovic? We all want to say yes, don't we? We all want to do Diego world. They've played 6 times. Djokovic has won them all I'm pretty sure they'll be like a close set in there Schwartzman will make it close. I just always think that when Schwartzman plays Djokovic, he is clinging onto his serve. You know, it's Merrick's first rule. You have to hold your serve. And Schwartzman struggles with that generally, but he makes up for it normally on return, because he's so good there. But Djokovic's return is the best I've ever seen. He's just constantly putting Schwartzman under pressure and it feels like even if Schwartzman gets ahead, we'll talk about just breaking back. It seems like such a tricky matchup, for Schwartzman. One of the things that I've enjoyed this week in being back in the commentary box because it hasn't been anyone for a long long time is listening to the Davis Cup captain Leon Smith and people who have played the sport and coached the sport and asking them what you do when you play a player that is clearly levels above you in rankings terms and in achievements and what do you do as a coach to send your player out there to have a chance? What do you do? And Leon Smith made a really interesting. Analysis for me of how there's no point in sending your player out to try to be something that they're not, to try to throw some game plan in that they've never done before. Morphy's U.S. open semifinal style. He said, you have to, you have to tell them what you've seen in the stats about what the opponent is likely to do on certain points and how often they go which way with a serve, et cetera to equip them. And then you've got to tell them they've got to play their game and they've got to play it the best that they possibly can and try to keep the score close and then maybe they'll be a couple of points here and there where the player misses the first serve and gives you a little opening and maybe you can put them under a bit of pressure and it's all so incremental. There's no point in doing much more than that really and that's your best chance, but it's really that just how tough it is even from a coach's perspective really came through to me. And yet, you know, madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. You know, so many times we have bemoaned players for going into a match and just playing their game because it hasn't worked 8 times in the past 9 times in the past why is it going to work now, but I get that if you do try and do something totally different as well, you're kind of setting yourself up also to get thrashed potentially. It's one of the best players of the best players. Rafael Nadal today had his outing on Suzanne long Len, you know, we thought, well, I'm using the collective we generously here because I've just taken you to task on your image of prediction, David, but some people thought, but might be might be a bit tricky. And the longer it might be a bit tricky for Rafael Nadal today, turns out absolutely nothing was tricky for our final Nadal. I was reminded after making that long then remark that he's never actually lost a match on longland, ever. He's never lost a match outside chatrier. No. And we got the best week. We finished our chat with Mary earlier. Off air and she said in the doll's omelet is open, right? And that's very much a reference that you need to have listened to the Mary pod to understand. So if you don't understand that, go and listen to that part now. But basically, he's got a chance, right? Nadal at this tournament, and of course we said yes, because it's Nadal at Roland Garros. But it does feel like his first three matches here he's won very convincingly today was the best of the lot, certainly for the first two and a half sets. I think the best I've seen in Nadal play probably since Acapulco, really, I didn't think he was amazing always in Indian Wells. Anyway, the idea of him winning suddenly seems not obvious because Djokovic and alcaraz, but it feels like we may be thinking more about weather forecasts and scheduling and level rather than the foot. Because look, the foot hasn't been a problem for three months. There wasn't any question about the foot in his post match. Which was the first time. First time. And look, we know that it's when he gets pushed, and it's when he gets tested that the foot does become an issue. But I think we go back a week and the doll was far less certain about how he was going to pull up. He's had a pretty perfect three rounds, I think. Timing of match as well is another factor. That's what I mean when scheduling. But if he gets that nightmare, she's made it so clear. This is fascinating. So we're probably jumping the gun on our preview here, but let's just allow ourselves to go there for a moment because both Nadal and Djokovic have been asked about this today and both of them have been drawn on it. They've laid their cards on the table. The cards were pretty easy to guess, but the fact that they fronted up about them is interesting. Nadal asked impress how he feels about night Sessions and he said he does not agree with night Sessions in principle on claim. He said, obviously, they don't suit me personally, but he just doesn't think they should be played full stop. I think the conditions are too heavy. The balls are too slow. And actually, I think he's worried about injuries. Sessions on clay because the players having to force the ball. And Djokovic on a TV interview, I think, with tennis channel, but I'm not quite sure I know Nadal has did the tennis channel studio. As you know, it must have been on French TV because it was Mikhail lodger that asked him, yeah, it was a French TV. He was asked about whether he would like the potential quarterfinal that he might end up playing against 13 time champion Rafael Nadal, whether he would like that to be a night session, and Djokovic said, let's just say that Nadal and I would be asking for different scheduling. On that day. Quite like that. And Matt and I were talking about this earlier and Nadal's going to ask for day Djokovic is going to ask for the night. Prime Video will ask for night, Franz television will ask for day. And I'm sure other TV stations will have various requests as well. I think it's going to be pretty much equal weight on either side. And ultimately it's going to be a judgment call from the tournament. And it's going to be fascinating..

"To court. ASAP, you're on in just a little bit with Grigor Dimitrov because of the fact that Maxine Crecy had a stomach bug. So all of a sudden he's in the tournament. Obviously as you know all too well, you battle with roughly on the doll that is excessive on the body. So you don't hydrate in the way you probably need to for a proper tennis match at 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, whatever it was. So he comes in, plays the first set, somehow wins the tiebreak despite the fact that Dimitrov had plenty of opportunities. This whole match is so good. It was like a peak cause off match. And it was a great crash course of seeing kozlov do kozlov things at this level where he's really just junk balling. 90% of the time. And Dimitrov looked silly out there at points because and this is something that, you know, like these great junk ballers, whether it's cod stuff, whether it's probably people honestly probably seeing more of like Madison Bengal. On the women's side who just gives like no pace, really disrupts big hitters, throws them off. And so like, yes, Grigor is missing these shots that just looked terrible, but if you're watching kozlov, he's doing things to take Grigor constantly out of his comfort zone. And yeah, and it was a fascinating. Yeah, he has to have Stefan has that hand skill to just redirect absorb your pace and just move you around and it doesn't look like he's doing much, but he is doing something. And they're all just like higher than you want or lower than you want or just like it's always just like not in your strike zone. Correct. Yeah. That being said, the missed volley from Dimitrov. And I can't remember the exact score, but it was a set point for him where he had a high backhand volley and just instead of just like literally all he had to do was just block block the volley into the court points over. He wins the set and he just goes for that flashy style volley right through and just smacks it right into the top of the tape. After that. Right. Oh my God. And if he puts that ball in, probably a straight set win and we're done and that we don't really tell this fun story. But instead he misses that and then causal off steals the first set and then the cramping in the second set where kozlov and it was a full on full on cramp. There is no doubt if you saw the pictures if you saw the close up video with his leg like taught. It was quite serious and probably Ben, I think he was probably given a little bit too much time in lenience to deal with it with the rules. I think that's probably fair. And to Grigor's credit, he didn't make a big deal of it. He probably could have, and I don't mean a little deal. A lot of players wouldn't a lot more correct. But kozlov, I know there were some pedialyte that was brought out to him on court and just somehow found his way through it because of the excessive time that the finish of that second set. And then, you know, he started going for a little bit more. It kind of freed him up. He was thinking about that instead of maybe overthinking what he was trying to do and just playing. One that second set setting up a match with Nadal in the second. And I mean, it's just just a phenomenal story because as I've said and we did a podcast with him, Noah, Rubin and I, he's been through a lot, cause has been through an awful lot just two years ago, he's about 500 in the world. Really struggling to have any motivation to play at all without promoting my podcast too much on yours, Ben, but go for it, go for it. We was a really introspective interview with him and he just talked about the difficulties he's had, just trying to find his way back after such an incredible junior career. And this level of dedication he's had over the last year to start in 15 K's literally about a year ago now and then find his way back into challenger main draws and then just start really having that big run in the fall and playing in his first Grand Slam ever. First Grand Slam main draw average. After, again, Grand Slam finals as a junior. That's remarkable that it's taken him that long. He was in a challenger final at 16 back in Sacramento against same query. I mean, it's like, holy hell, this kid has so much. And it's such a great redemption story, the work that he's put in, and he's a fun spirited player and one that's really fun to watch as well. So I'm happy he had the moment and I hope that he continues just to build on it. Yeah. No, it's been great scene of no one his story knowing having known him as a junior and I could say absolutely elite Jeremy two junior slam finals and then it wasn't coming from him and he also didn't get as much help as he might have. I mean, he was certainly in range for a couple U.S. open wild cards, especially that he didn't for sure. And then you could maybe feel a little bit hard done by at times from that. But then yeah, but then his capability to sort of like you said start back to the bottom earnest way up and be playing, you know, just seeming like a lot more professional kind of presence on tour at this point. It's really cool. Yeah. And that whatever Dimitrov obviously you moved on to the match you got next thing that's at all. But the winner gets to make sure it's our biggest benefits career. I think so. That's a big statement when over someone like Dimitrov. And obviously it came with ridiculous highs and lows and stuff and stories. Marooned at sea along the way. Another sort of goofy things about it. I was happening really late at night and all these sorts of stuff. But that was impressive. That was a good introduction to a wider ATP kind of fan base to see to win that kind of match. And seeing Nadal in these listen, he's knocked out three Americans so far to get to the semifinals in kudla and then kozlov and Tommy Paul last night. And it's been really interesting to see some of these young Americans, especially in cause and Tommy Paul. Bagels in both for sets, but then once they kind of settle down and get over that intimidation, just like I can actually play with these guys and the second set Nadal and Kosovo was entertaining and last night's Nadal and Tommy Paul second set was actually really pretty high level while Nadal was struggling with his very, very, very sweaty shorts and shoes. I don't know if you saw Ben, but he literally couldn't put a ball in his pocket because it was too wet. And his shoes were sopping wet and he told me afterwards that he had forgotten to bring an extra pair of shoes. So there's a lot going on here, but yeah, that redemption story is going to be one that sticks with me for a while and I hope he continues. Yeah, good to see him, hopefully, both momentum and indie world's Miami. We hope and yes, see how he keeps rolling. Because he was somebody who second pieces as a Segway. Was in the junior mix to players like I'm looking at this 2014 Australian open boy. He beat Rublev in the quarters of that tournament two and one. So isn't that league? And then he lost in the final to Alexander's thereof, who became who played the match after kozlov and his late night in Acapulco. Went really late. I couldn't stand for this whole.

"Managing that big hammer first serve from bertini and that one two that one two serve big forehand that I think he likes to play and mitigate from playing too many double handed backhands. So might just come down to a question of whether Nadal can kind of stay in the rally on his Serb beyond those sort of one two punches. And get it onto his backhand as much as possible. Yeah, I think it's I feel like some people have been saying, you know, rappers never had such a good chance to get another Australian open title. You were writing him off. You were writing him off. I swear before any tennis had been played in Belgium. I think, you know, Rafa, no, but to be fair, rapha said himself for even like two months ago or whatever he wasn't sure if he'd be back. So I think he wasn't crashes four months ago. Unbelievable. Yeah, so he's surprised himself. He wasn't really sure. So I think we just need to literally appreciate the fact that he's at this stage. And that's what I'll be focusing on anyway, facing about that rather than stressing too much about the end result. One player that had a very relaxed quarterfinal was stefanos sits pass because he swept past Yannick sinner in straight sets 6 three 6 four 6 two. This was a very comfortable victory. I have to say, I thought this would be a lot closer. Since bass didn't even face a break point, very comfortable and serve and I mean, is he blooming, peaking at the right time? He's been quite under the radar, I think a lot of people had written him off, you know, ourselves included because of this recent elbow surgery. But it seems to have helped in the fact that he doesn't have pressure on him. He's just kind of got through those a few tougher first rounds and maybe he's literally turning it really on just the right time. Yeah, yeah, definitely I think the funny we spoke about Nadal and his injury troubles as I said, he had a photo of him from three, four months ago with him on crutches and perhaps he's surprised him himself by the fact that not only is he playing in the Australian open, but is able to get to the semifinals. Well, yeah, it sounds like we've sister passed with his elbow, we've had reports of his doctor saying that he wouldn't be even ready to play the Australian open after his surgery. So I think he's perhaps surpassed and surprised with how well he has done. I wouldn't say it's necessarily as pretty and maybe as serene as some of the other players who have kind of got to this stage. But at the same time, he's still in the drawer and he is now, I think firing on all cylinders. I think he needed. I think that Taylor Fritz mats almost kind of jolted him, I think into realizing or I think certainly making him play close to his best tennis. And I think he's just carried that through into this match against Yannick sinner, who I think will be disappointed with how it went, because I certainly think he is better than that. I certainly think he's better than just losing in straight sets in very kind of comprehensive fashion. But at the same time, I don't really think his pass gave him a look in. 79% of first serve points. He had early breaks in each set. It was just all very comfortable. And I think cinder will be disappointed with just how comfortable it was. He could have perhaps been a bit too passive and placid and I still think sinner was still talking about him as a player who's maybe a little one or two steps behind like a valo for a Felix ogier aliasing in the sense that it doesn't have the nausea I feel to really kind of test the top top players in the grand slams when it comes to the when it comes to fourth round quarterfinal stage. It all just seems to it all just seems to kind of fall apart quite quickly for him. Do you think he's going to be another Grigor Dimitrov? A lot of promise and expectation, but perhaps not able to deliver at the real slam stage. I mean, he's still extremely young. I'm probably being very harsh. I just really need a bit more oomph and I'm a fan of sitting. I would love him to get that extra edge, but do you think he needs Carlos alcaraz is his body coach over the summer? Well, yeah, maybe he does need to beef off a bit, but everyone has a different physique, so not saying that that is necessary, but I just, yeah, I feel like he just needs that extra something to finally. I just feel like, yes, we were all looking forward to this match being a lot more competitive. And perhaps in time, it will be, because these two are going to be playing each other a lot over the next few years or so. So, you know, it's a learning curve. I'm sure he'll look back at what he couldn't should have done. But 6 pass was very, very good today. And I mean, going into the semifinal with Medvedev, this is a repeat of last year's semi when Medvedev one in straight sets. It's slightly different. You know, it's went into that match, having had that long 5 setter with Rafa. He was quite tired. It was quite obvious that he didn't really have full vitality in that match, I think, so never came through quite comfortably. I have to say, I think it's going to be a lot closer this time around. I know Medvedev has a winning head to head, I believe, over sits past. Yes. Yeah, he's 6 two. 6 cis two in the head to head. Cis did win their last encounter, but that was on clay at Roland Garros. I think Medvedev will have good memories, obviously, of beating him in straight sets last year. I would not surprise if it is a completely different affair. I don't think I don't think you can actually read too much into that match. They played in the semifinals last year. I think they're going to have to just treat it. Treat it differently. I do wonder if Medvedev is going to have to play more like Novak in order to come through to his pass. He seems to be firing on all cylinders and peaking at the right time. I still do think Medvedev should have too much for him. It also didn't look like his hip was really troubling him. So I don't think there's going to be any potentially injury nigga. So I do still favor Medvedev, but I do think that at the same time force this to pass this is a very big and decent opportunity I think for him to reach the Australian open men's final probably at a time he was maybe least expecting it. Well, exactly. And I think for quite a few of the certainly him and Raphael, I think, you know, health wise, they're both bouncing back from situations that they just thought would have them out for a lot longer or forever. So we'll have to see how it goes. That will be the nightmare on Friday, hoping for an entertaining one because we've had some very inciting course finals. Ladies draw on the other hand, slightly less entertaining in the quarterfinals, but we'll get on to that after very quick break. So do join us in just a second where we'll be looking at those quarters. Okay, do not go anywhere. Welcome back to the passing shot with Joel and Kim, sponsored by download tennis dot com..

"Actually, in some ways. Yeah, he's actually. Maybe it's because he's playing on the same day as Medvedev, perhaps, and I don't know. My attention kind of goes to Medvedev. I think lots of people would probably feel the same. He described his win as a lot of fighting and a little bit of swearing, which I thought was quite a good summary. He was frustrated. He said it took him a time quite a bit of time to work out buyers, someone had never played before. Quite a tricky game. I think I asked him straight up. How was your elbow? And he said, fine. He said, honestly, I've not troubled me to Sydney. It is fine, and he didn't need any treatment, or anything like that. So it's a good sign. Because that's my biggest worry about sits a pass. You know, I do think other than that, the game, the game can be there. So then it sort of feels like. I've dropped a clanger then is what you're saying by not having him in my quarterfinals. I haven't got him in there. We've only worked with the information in front of you. I sort of, I had him losing to Taylor Fritz in round four, which is a much still on course to happen for it to beat TFA today in three sets, which is a big win little wobble from any double faulted serving match point serving for the match, but then he wrapped it up in the third set tiebreak. So they're on a little collision course. That TFA for it to match. I think it was, we didn't get to see that much of it three very competitive sets. I think, for those three, I mean, so striking the difference in physique between those two. One of them has been playing a lot of golf. And the other one's been playing less golf. I would say, but yeah, Taylor Fritz looking good. And I don't know. I don't know what I was thinking. Anyway, we're all thinking vaguely the same thing. So Fritz now faces Roberto Bautista, a goo and sits a pass faces Benoit pair. Who's unexpectedly doing a thing, he's having a run, he's beaten Grigor Dimitrov, he's got this extraordinary head to head, I think, with Gregor Dimitrov has and he's beaten in four times. So who knows? Maybe it's just one of these quirky head to heads, or maybe Benoit paire is ready to finally fulfill his talent anyone want to speculate about whether that's the case is he going to pass? Happy to take it in its own isolation, that particular match. Not to try to read anything into it whatsoever. Understood David understood. Pablo andujar, the movement killer. He has reached round three at the Australian open for the first time aged 35. And I think that deserves a little bit of a round of applause. And he faces Alex domino next. So he's got the chance to do some more movement killing. The first time Alex de menor had won a match on the rod laver arena today, which was a big moment for you. That was the only person that showed up for his press conference. Really? Great, Aussie hope, I know. Wow, that does surprise me. Yeah. How did that conversation go, Matt? This is where I say, find out in the newsletter. But it was very nice. It was very nice. Yes. Sign up then. We didn't plan that folks. Last match, I think that we want to mention is Felix auger LS theme against Alejandro davidovich for kina on the care arena my goodness me this was grueling. I mean, Matt and I went out to watch a short portion of it and that was grueling enough. Went out for a second stint. And that sounded grueling, and then the match seemed to go on for another 7 hours after that. And it was only four sets. Goodness knows what would have happened if Alejandro davidovich for managed to take it into a 5th, which could have happened four tiebreak sets. It was, wasn't it? Marathon marathon stuff. And I know Felix is an extraordinary physical specimen, but he has had serious court time to get to this point. Yeah, and played right in the heat of the day. It was hot today at Melbourne park and this was in the baking sun for four plus hours. Yeah, I found it interesting. I remember we commented on Aussie against battista goo at ATP cup and how good was your earliest scene looked, and how secure he looks. He wasn't making the same errors that he often makes. And I really thought maybe that playing someone with that rhythm helped him. But he's played two players here who give him rhythm. Rusev Rory, and davidovich for kina, their baseline that he's had rhythm. And yet, I've watched quite a lot of him. And he is spraying the ball. You do not know what is coming off of his racket. It's either a sweet connection with a perfect pop, and it looks brilliant. It's sort of mesmerizing. Or it's a shank and it's going ten feet long. And it's a real mix at the moment. And I do think perhaps though the video makes for keener and Rousey, both have firepower. And I think he's been wary of that. And I think he's been trying to pull the trigger a little bit, perhaps when he shouldn't be. Very different style of his next match against Dan Evans, who didn't have to play today. After render kanesh withdrew with a wrist injury. So couldn't be more contrasting circumstances for those two Felix about 8 hours court time into matches Dan Evans very fresh, having had a day off. Sometimes that doesn't help. You know, sometimes that can actually hurt a player. So that's an interesting third round, but gosh, Felix has had to have to battle through and his celebration afterwards was as big as you see from Phoenix also alias seem. He was buzzing to have won that today. He really was. Felix augere seeming in Stan Evans is a match that I can definitely get excited about. That'll be in a couple of days time. The schedule for tomorrow is tasty. It's very tasty indeed, David. There is a lot of this that you're not going to be allowed to watch because it's happening in the middle of the night. And if I see you tweeting at 3 o'clock in the morning again, there is not going to be a podcast tomorrow. Those are the rules. I don't need to start a burner account or something. Yeah. I mean, close your ears for this scheduled David because you're not allowed to watch any of it until the night session, okay? As a ranker against fitter first up on rod laver arena. We'll let you know the result in the podcast, David. Critique of our Panko. Thanks. And then in likely sensational match that you're not allowed to watch news, David, and watch some of this. Alcaraz against bertini. Look. Oh, I'm watching that. If it goes long, you can watch the end, okay? Can you make the others go longer?.

"And yeah, so I think whoever whoever's in that line of the draw I actually really like to get through this. I would love it feel like I'll feed smash that'd be cool too. Yeah, that'd be very, very fun. Dan Evans is also in the section of the draw. What was he chirping off about? Last night. Oh, he was mad that carotid took a toilet break. He was there. He goes to toilet. Yes. I make a toilet. No, he said he said, I go to toilet. Yeah. I just go through toilet. It's the best. I was one forever. Love that guy. It's a pass is the next one as we scroll up through this draw is his quarter of the draw the fourth he's the number four seed. He plays Michael eamer very speedy fella in this section of the draw. He could get a very one hand back full backhand full match against Dimitrov in the third round. Dimitrov looked actually really good in Melbourne, lost to, but still looked good. He opened the pairs in here too. Taylor Fritz Keller Chris was the first player as I tweeted, who I saw being followed around by the Netflix camera crew. So listen to see what they're casting choices and rubrics are. It becomes more clear who they're picking who they're not picking. But they're picking Fritz. So it's a parent to say that he's already been he's already recorded his stuff, or is that what he said? Since I said he was like, he had known about it for a while. He's really excited part of it. Basically, this is Paul said. Okay. And then I've said, I don't know anything about this. So that was the contrast of answers there today. Plus. Pass has been shaky. He's had an elbow injury. He's not playing his best. I actually really like this draw. If he can get through this, I really like the show for Dimitrov. I have this like weird. For some reason, Courtney. I don't know why. Tell me I'm crazy. But I got on the plane, thinking, you know, it'd be cool if Grigor Dimitrov only Australian open. Like, let's just do it. Let's sign up. People would sign up for that in a heartbeat. Be so fast. It'd be such a sign of a event. And I'm looking at it and I'm thinking, you know what? I just watched the Wimbledon movie so improbable things happen. Dimitrov is not but if you can get past it to pass, and aerospace is not a full strength. After it's about to get Fritz or Bali Batista, and I think anyone either of those. And yeah, and then the next section is rude or center. Yeah, I mean, come on. Murray's in there too, Demeter's in there, but this could be. I mean, Grigor for the title, baby. I mean, why not? Let's just do it. Let's just put things in the universe. Griggs for Raleigh G let's go. Yeah, exactly. No, Aussie G. There you go. Very into that. Very into that idea. I mean, they would be, again, like let's step back. Clean, would it be? This is the thing, like tonight, right? When coconut one. Yeah. That was one of those things that was just like united tennis. Like nobody is mad about that. You know what I mean? And it was just like, this is great. It brings the community together, we're getting those sorts of results, Maddie, making the final people were really, really into it. You know, like there are just certain figures in this sport that are just like the opposite of polarizing, or they polarize into unity. Like not a thing, but okay. Not a thing, but like, hey, I learned. I was gonna make a make a joke about one of our favorite Twitter accounts, but I won't. And their use of the English language. But yeah, so it would be amazing if after all of the sturm and the drang and all everything that you just got like feel good stories. I just want it and I just want for men to tennis a champion of this is my wish for men tennis this year. A champion who is surprising. Someone who is not either a big four or big three, because Andy would be very sprouting at this point and roger to actually this point. And rapha kinda tastes like we got to not know that although I made it interesting for myself too at this point. So maybe there's no one. But then someone who's also not like, it's been their turn for a while. You know, not one of the next three, not like even Rublev. I want to throw in there too. Not agreed. Someone who's not obvious. Someone who, again, like a Grigor, like let's say like Chapo, like someone in that said, yes, cross up a fitness description. Someone like demeanor, someone like who people have heard of, but it's not quite been there. Hatching off. Whoever I'm looking at the other side, the people who fit this category, who I just think it'd be nice to spread the love around Mormons tennis, to hear more people in draws with calling cards. That's what we were saying when your boy hubie won Miami. It's like nice to have hubie like B and Miami champ and have that be something to identify them and you just need I think because the women's Charlotte people have calling cards and the men no one calls them. I think that the thing about it and obviously, you know, this is effectively what has happened on the women's side is that you need these, I don't want to outlier result is not fair, that's not how I want to characterize some of the slam champions. But you do need some of these surprising results. In order to motivate everyone, people can not just be ladies in waiting. They can't, it's not interesting to me as a tennis fan or sports fan to follow a sport where there seems to be.

"I think that's why I just think in tournaments like this, the mix that we spoke about last week for me is always going to be bigger when the big three are not there, because yes, Medvedev's great. Sits a pass is great. This generation strong, but everyone else has just got more of a chance against them, I think. How many of these men's last date are in the mix? I think most of them at this stage. Yeah. How many numbers is cam nori in the mix? Is Grigor Dimitrov in the mix? Given there on that side of the draw, I think probably yes. I would personally, and I said there are three at the start of the tournament, and I would still say there are three. I would move her catch into Medvedev's position. Oh, you see what he's done there Matt. Well, that is the other big implication of Medvedev losing. Catherine's prediction. Let's talk about how many points I would get Matt. It's so many I can't remember how many it is. 500 and I've still got sit surpass. Yeah, yeah. You don't get nearly as many points. No. And he's got a bad cold, apparently. I've switched actually, I switched my background music to diminish, sits a pass from last night. That was great. Which was a cracker. I've just had one eye on them and all winning the opening set tiebreak. Presumably he's going to go on now to lose the subsequent two sets. But it's good to see them all playing some good tennis, isn't it? It's been a tough run for him. It was a reminder of how exciting years how fast he is, how hard he goes after the ball. You know, he's trying to hurt the opponent even though he's physically inferior to sit the pass in terms of strength and raw power. But looking at his record, I mean, you mentioned the year he's had, and he referenced it in his press conference, that the COVID he's had and the struggle with form. And he came into this tournament, barely 50 50 for the year in wins and losses, 21 wins 20 losses. He lost 7 of his last date. Yeah, for a player his level, or the player that we think of him as, that's really poor. And, you know, it's quite interesting hearing them talk about their scheduling in that Medvedev said I'm going to go to Moscow now, but I really don't know whether I'll play. You know, I suspect he won't. And dim and ore was saying that he's down for about the next 6 tournaments. You know, he's down for several of the indoor European tournaments, and he was really hoping he could have a day off before Antwerp. But he didn't think he would be able to because of the tournament so stacked with players and it's tough being an Aussie and ex he can't go home. Although, although he bases himself in Spain, I think. Yeah, the county base, which is helpful for him, I think, but even so, you could tell, he said the problem is because I'm not winning matches. I then kind of have to play every week in order to try to get something going. If I could just have a week where I got a run going and want some matches, I could maybe take the next one off, you know, but as things stand he's desperate to play Davis Cup finals. He was saying, and you know, even though that stretches into December, but my word, does it make for a long hard year of species Usain at 7 losses in 8 matches that that's 7 weeks of your life where you just miserable, you know, that's tough. Yeah. And I think another man who's had a bit of this is Diego Schwartzman. You know, he's not had a terrible year, but by his recent standards, there's been a bit of a drop off. And it's been very difficult for him. He's barely been back home since the tour resume last year. I think he's had a matter of weeks back home in Argentina. And he's been on the road. The rest of the time. And, you know, it's been a good week for him. He got his first top ten win of the season over Casper Ruud. He also saved match points in the second round, I think, against Crecy, and he came from a set and a break down against Dan Evans. He's really battled through this week. Schwartzman and just looks more like himself again. So that's been good to see. He's playing cam nori next, Noreen to his first ever ATP masters 1000 quarterfinal. Neither of those players in your mix, David. What do they have to do? Well, the winner of that match get into the mix. With the winner of that, play the winner of Dimitrov and her catch. Is that where we are? Yes. I would say yes, then, yes, the winner of that is in the mix. But I'm really impressed with them both. I mean, as you saw in Schwartzman beat in rude, is not a result I expected. And I do love watching Schwartzman. And frankly, I love listening to Schwartzman. He's just he's so up for it all the time. He loves talking and playing his heart out in front of crowds and crowds end up loving him, don't they? And as for nori, I mean, to beat Roberto bad histor good. Over a three set epic..
