San Antonio Spurs fail to reach playoffs for first time since 1997

"Head coach Gregg Popovich was in no mood to reminisce about the previous 22 n BA seasons yesterday after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1997 usually salty pop said, looking at the past doesn't do much good. He was focused on the present proud that his team gave itself a chance to keep that streak going. So let's do the reminiscing for him 22 consecutive trips to the playoffs ties for the longest such streak in you. NBA history. The run includes five titles, another trip to the finals and four other trip to the conference finals. They averaged over 55 regular season winds. Yes, they had a whole of fame head coach Plus Hall of Fame players, But nothing is easy. So money teams have down years but not the Spurs. At least for 23 years. I'm injured.

"The Spurs miss out on the playoffs for the first time since one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety, seven when they went twenty in sixty two and won the lottery to select Tim Duncan with the first overall pick. So it's been a while a run of twenty two consecutive years comes an end for Gregg Popovich the spurs play play Australia just having it and your thoughts on it. I don't have any thoughts. Doesn't doesn't. Doesn't it or my mind this. Evaluate the performance there in Orlando you guys obviously. Before it ended. This important when it ended. Just screwing with.

Orlando Magic's Jonathan Isaac explains why he didn't take knee or wear Black Lives Matter shirt Friday

"We had an incredible opening weekend of games name a star level player that player delivered at least once if not twice over the first three or four nights of the NBA's restart here in Orlando, we had crazy comeback wins. By the Houston Rockets, we had a dominant performance by. Jaanus over some little pesky pip squeak team from New England I forget who they might be. We got Marcus smart got fined for trying to work the officials. We've got storylines upon story lines. The clippers bounce back from their loss to the Lakers. Looking excellent and just throttling the New Orleans Pelicans. There's so many different directions that we can go Michael that I decided. Here's what we're GONNA do opening weekend heaters we're GONNA have just open ended questions are we're going to ping pong back and forth you give me your answers I'm going to give you my answers to these questions and try to cover as much ground as possible before we get there though I do want to double back quickly on the national anthem demonstrations that we touched on last episode, we got so many thoughtful emails from various members of the open floor globe on this subject, but I think there was a major development after we spoke on Friday. and. That involve Jonathan Isaac Meyers. Leonard Gregg Popovich Becky Hammon and one of the NBA referees all deciding to not kneel to not really participate in what had been in unified demonstration on Thursday. All of those people who chose to stand were obviously doing it on principle and they were doing it knowing there was going to be a lot of attention their direction. Now, if you look at Popovich amend the referee essentially, they were trying to just say, Hey, I support the the Social Justice Movement it's it's a private or personal decision for the referee said look I it's important to me to stand Meyers Leonard made a similar comment. Essentially. Saying that his brothers military service in the in the military service of close people in his life led him to WanNa stand to salute the flag. But within Isaac was a slightly different case and he actually used this entire demonstration opportunity to almost have a one man demonstration of his own. In his belief, the idea of the black lives matters movement quote unquote doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. He also said that you know we shouldn't be necessarily judging things solely based on skin color that we should be trying to live a life basically you know in God's mold and try to live up to his standard, and that Jesus Christ was his personal savior and and that he wanted everyone to focus on that. Aspect of of living rather than the particular issue that was being brought forward with the black lives matter movement by the players he didn't really get any major pushback. Within the NBA Community people respected his right to make a stand. He actually not only did he stand during the national anthem? He didn't wear a black lives matter t shirt which many people notice because he was essentially the only player not to do that his whole personal story Michael took a crazy twist over the weekend and sad twist when he wound up tearing his ACL injury that's going to end his time here in Orlando obviously but also could cost him all of next season. So now talk about a whirlwind seventy, two hours for player who generated millions of us with his comments about the protests. I'm curious. Let's start with Jonathan Isaac. What did you make of his decision? After we've seen things settle in the last couple of days You know maybe it doesn't seem quite as Eye Opening as it did at that moment, but I'll admit I was I was surprised to see given the buy in from everybody on opening night. Right, I mean I just WanNa Start and say that it it really really is a bummer to see anyone get injured but particularly is ICK who was already on restriction he was already playing with a humongous brace on his leg from a previous injury that cost him a majority of this regular season before it was suspended. So I just I feel for him greatly. I I think generally speaking. The coverage of who stands in who sits I mean we talked about this heading in anticipated it I. Think I think the coverage is generally besides the point and it doesn't really get the point I feel like people are using. This as an opportunity to shame those who are standing in a little bit I mean Meyers Leonard. said, he couldn't sleep before he made the decision to stand and that's just like not. The whole focus or the point here right like. You can obviously Support Black lives and also stand for the national anthem. It is a symbolic gesture that is what it is in the case of Isaac. I really had a difficult time understanding even what his message was until you interpreted it the way that you did I mean I watched the clip of Him Multiple Times survey there I'm GonNa just GonNa read what he said I and then we can use that as a jumping off point because I don't WanNa torture what he said earlier and I might have done that. So sorry for that. He says quote absolutely I believe that black lives matter kneeling while wearing a black lives matter t shirt doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. I. Don't think kneeling or putting on a T. shirt for me personally is the answer i. Feel like for me, black lives are supported through the Gospel. All lives are supported through the Gospel. We all have things that we do wrong. Sometimes, it gets into a place of pointing fingers. We all fall short of God's glory whoever will humble themselves and seek God and repent of their sins. We can see our mistakes and people's mistakes and evil in a different light. Racism isn't the only thing that flags our society, our nation and our world, and he basically said he wanted this conversation to get out of the realm of skin color because the answer to all of our problems in everything that goes on in our world is Jesus. So. when I watched the clip. I'll I'll be honest. I was a little confused where he was going to after typing it all out trying to marinate on what he was saying I think he essentially wanted to have a demonstration on behalf of his religious beliefs and that this was an opportunity for him to say look you know focusing only on one particular group I. Guess in his view, the black lives matter group and you know everybody wearing a t-shirt doesn't necessarily achieve the wider goal which would be presumably healthy living. You know honest living you know Living which to him as a higher priority I think that's where he was going with his statements.

Report: NBA Considering $1M Per Player Purse for Proposed In-Season Tournament

"Yeah there's a story that broke today and as we talked about before with Jason that the NBA is trying to get some excitement in the dog days of the NBA season I'm from my perspective I think the NBA season is too long okay it is in the NBA's they're severely struggling right now they are not getting the ratings not many people are watching the games because like you said the season has gone very long the load management I'm using air quotes their load management prize affecting all the NBA because you'll go to a game on a Tuesday you want to go see the clippers play quite letters ninety playing a game because he's not hurt he he's he's not injured anything he's just tired he got on a plane that has become a serious issue started by Gregg Popovich yeah we had now will it be Adam silver the commissioners his plan is to shorten the NBA season by a few games and at a mid season tournament in between thanksgiving Christmas that importance and interest to those games so they'll have a parliament and mid season tournament between thanksgiving and Christmas and as of reported this this week by Adam Adrian we're now ski there the NBA's is discussing adding a one million dollar per player purse for the winners of the proposed thirty team and sees in turn amid wailing I it's a great incentive for these teams to want to go with this alternate plan of a season can you imagine if you're the night man on a good basketball team and you're gonna get a million dollars he also went yeah I am all for this plan because I I agree I I love the NBA but I'm not watching it right now because this part of the season I know you know every game does matter to an extent but it's the most boring part of the season right now besides upcoming Christmas games you know there's not much to watch for unless you're a Die Hard fan and if right now there is a tournament going on maybe in Las Vegas between all thirty teams you know that would that would that would be I would be so much fun because it is a second playoffs it is a not as important playoffs the NBA you'll get a lot more fans involved yeah I'm more games more important games to watch there was something on the line at the end of December they're few and far between last night yeah the rockets in the clippers and rockets one one twenty two to one seventeen that was much watching your hardcore basketball fan because of Hardin kawaii so right but right now it if the Cavaliers and the bulls are on ESPN on a Monday night unless I'm from Cleveland Chicago you're not allowed to watch them game you're not you know what is the re what is the point to watch the game because it is gonna be boring it is going to be slow and it's that really has no effect on the season but if they have it in season tournament while all the teams participating that will be fun to watch it will bring more interest in the NB absolutely I think them adding that one million dollar purse per player to the winners that's got to entice every NBA team to say Hey rich news should do this route why don't rich dude we all get Richard rich dudes

Houston Rockets gear no longer sold on Chinese sites

"Well began on Friday with rockets general manager Darryl Lori putting out a tweet that was an image that expressed support for the Hong Kong Freedom Movement the controversy began when the rockets Maury fired off this tweet fight for freedom stand with Hong Kong that statement of support for hypocrisy protesters was seen as an affront to the teams Chinese fan base tweet was quickly deleted but the damage was already done Tillman for the her of the Houston Rockets this does the rockets very quickly teams owner tweeting more he does not speak for the Houston Rockets China reacted strongly they condemned Daryl's comments China's council the General in Huston urge the team to clarify and immediately correct mistakes any statement on Sunday is the NBA there was shock at just how big a story this has become and now we have a geopolitical incident that was affected really sparked with one tweet Chris Mannix you've been covering the story for sports illustrated do you have any idea why Daryl Morey tweeted support for Hong Kong all of a sudden no I've known Daryl Morey for a longtime he's an incredibly smart guy I don't know what was the impetus for the tweet and it's interesting that he would do that just because Daryl's been the GM of the rockets for a long time and Darryl knows full well the influence of the rockets in the NBA on China Darryl is the GM of a team that was the home of Ya Ming one of the biggest international stars ever so he knows exactly what kind of effect this is going to have and he went out there and did it all the same aside from China getting angry have there been any consequences for the NBA well ten cent which has a long standing deal with the NBA they stream the majority of the NBA Games they're responsible for the close to five hundred million viewers that are watching NBA Basketball in China they announced that they will stop showing Houston Rockets Games the Chinese Basketball Association which ironically is run by Ming at this point they said that they were cutting ties with the Houston Rockets its sponsors affiliated with China pulled away from the rockets so anything Chinese effectively severed their ties with the rockets in a very short period of time okay so China got mad the rockets owner tried to sweep it under the rug I saw rockets players trying to deal with this James Hardie it was like apologize we love we love no plane you know we appreciate the support that they give us individually in as an organization so we love you but how did the NBA itself react all the NBA's reaction wasn't great we reported the NBA statement saying we recognize that the views expressed the Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey have deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China which is regrettable it really this is supposed to be the woke league they did say in that kind of word salad of a statement that Darryl had the right to say anything he wanted but they said that he had to write saving educated on the matter and that rang a little hollow with some people so wasn't a very strong statement in the NBA face pretty swift backlash Senator Ted Cruz Texas Republican said the NBA is quote shamefully retreating in pursuit of big money Democratic presidential candidate who Castro says the US shouldn't allow American citizens to be bullied by authoritarian government they walk it back at the NBA walked that statement back very quickly so you'd you know Adam Silver who was over in Asia anyway as part of these international games that are taking place right now he made a much more forceful state in a statement that frankly better reflects I think what the NBA really stands for the long held values of the are to support freedom of expression and certainly freedom of expression by members of the NBA Community and in this case they're more as the general manager of the Houston Rockets enjoys dat right as one of our employees I understand that there are consequences from that exercise of an essence his freedom of speech and we will have to live with those consequences in the NBA coaches like Steve Curry Gregg Popovich takes wrong positions on domestic issues Gregg Popovich was quoted calling Donald Trump a soulless coward wonder what the people sick about who votes good for him where they're line is how much they can take where does the morality and decency kick in NBA didn't have anything to say on that publicly so the NBA really can't take a position on Daryl morey saying what he said publicly so the NBA initially kind of bungling their reaction they recovered pretty quickly and put out a statement that I think better reflects positions how're the NBA state Vince perceived in China it seems like you know anything short of Daryl Morey being fired and his comments being disavowed is not going to satisfy the Chinese government the Chinese Basketball Association or anybody that might be involved with this story they came out with some statements of their own saying eh agreed with the NBA's position on this but the NBA has stood pretty firm and that's really all they can do at this point there's a good chance that the NBA loses some money as a result of this but in the grand scheme of things the NBA doesn't need that money to survive so it's a bad situation the end I would like no part of but it doesn't really affect their bottom line so who needs who more here does does the NBA China does China need the NBA more I would argue that China needs the NBA more than the NBA needs China I mean China can't walk back decades of NBA basketball being in Deuce to its population and more than a billion people the NBA proudly touted the number of people that play basketball in China it's three hundred million they talk about the number the watch basketball in China it's just under five hundred million about twenty one million people watch game six of the NBA finals this past year that's an astronomical number even for a domestic viewership you can't just take that away from people in not expect people to want it back there really isn't a alternative in China they have the Chinese Basketball Association but it's nowhere near the level of basketball that the NBA plays on these stars from the NBA from Lebron James James Harden to Steph curry they are close to household names in China people by their sneakers they wear their jerseys he's but it's still unclear exactly how far China's willing to take this do you think right now the NBA is regretting how open it is on speech I mean the NBA has proudly empowered its players to speak up to be political Lebron's spoken up a lot on race steph curry and some of the other warriors have spoken out against trump coaches give political speeches can the NBA walk that back when comes to China when it's so encouraged here no the NBA can't walk any of this back in they have to live with situations like this they simply can't turn around and create new policy that says players can't speak on political issues or social issues and frankly I don't believe the NBA would do that the NBA's organization has established itself as a progressive one knows just back in two thousand sixteen when the NBA pulled an all star game out of Charlotte because the League disagreed with the North Carolina Bathroom Bill they've Asian themselves as a league willing to take stands on these types of things frankly I think the NBA relishes the attention that it's players get for taking stands on issues like this so behind the scenes maybe there's some conversation taking place some reminders about just how much money is being brought in in foreign markets but overall the NBA's not gonNa stop anyone from saying anything about any particular issue the

NBA commissioner defends free speech as China threatens league

"NBA commissioner Adam silver is standing firm after receiving a lot of backlash over his view on the Hong Kong protests USA's Tim Berg reports silver has been trying to find middle ground of showing support for team executive who spoke out for Hong Kong's protesters and protecting the league's growth in a basketball craze China silver statements have Democrats and Republicans criticizing the NBA commission to which Beverly hall Burke president of the district media group says when was the last time you saw Ted Cruz injection right I agree on anything apparently there are still some issues that bring Republicans and Democrats together and I think this is one that definitely warrants it what's interesting about it is that Adam silver who is the NBA commissioner has long said that he stands up for the free speech rights of players in those affiliated with the NBA you mentioned some examples there when players have spoken out you had lebron James who's called president trump the bomb you have coaches Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich who have tweeted about their position on gun control but apparently it's a step too far when you call out the Chinese government indirectly in and something to know about China they kill their citizens currently there are three million people who are in concentration camps you can stand up for the Chinese people and still call out the Chinese government but I think what this comes down to and people are rightly seen that the messaging war on this it really shows of the NBA's bottom line is about the bottom line Hoiberg was speaking there on fox

"Tonight. Sixty. Are you serious? I was to hit somebody. Hit tonight. I. Guys. Continue with Mike. Listen, I I have a problem with that. I do and I'm not anti Gregg Popovich, we've talked about Gregg Popovich his legacy and the accomplishments that he's hat, and in fact earlier shows in which he's come up in the same vein is Phil Jackson. There's been the argument that it's better. And I think it's a sound argument. You can make that he's better, you know, talking about Red Auerbach, but that moment Wednesday night, you wanna get a check that you wanna make it about you sixty three seconds into the game. That's fine. You've earned that. I may disagree with that. But you've earned that where I think you've crossed this line is, you know, here's a coach right now who should be getting praise for what he's done in Mike Malone in Denver. Here's a guy with a team right now. I don't know if they get knocked out in the first round or not. Or if they make it all the way to the Western Conference finals and get beat by the warriors. But that should be what Gregg Popovich comes in. And does. Storm somebody's press conference and make it about you that you gotta check it sixty three seconds into the game. You gotta check it. Mike malone. Didn't get you ojected. He didn't come out there and demand that some ref pop up and say, hey, get them out. You see what he's doing? The problem is Gregg Popovich makes moments about him way too often, and it's a very difficult conversation because he's a comedian. He's very smart, and he's also super successful. So we have a really difficult time criticizing people who are combination of all three or at the very least super successful. And I know that is an arbitrary term in our society because you can look at a lot of people who you may question with a raised eyebrow. How does that person fit under the realm of or at least the category of super successful Gregg Popovich, that's not a discussion. He's there. But that doesn't mean every single thing Gregg Popovich does his goal, and I don't know how you can look at crashing somebody's press conference. If he's gonna crash Michael Malone's press conference that make it about Mike Malone step in and say, this is an amazing coach that he's done such a great opera. Give him. Some praise you're already on your way out. We know you're on your way out. Why would you come in and talk about your ojection when your team got your ass kicked? Well, it's to be fun. And it's to go back and forth with the media and keep that persona up. I look at the ladder. And I have an issue with it. If this is about sending a message to your team getting jetted sixty three seconds into the game. It didn't work. You got lit up. Is it something that you regret is that something that you shouldn't have done? No, I'm not calling you out for being jetted sixty three seconds into the game. I'm calling you out for having fun with setting an NBA record by crashing the opponent's head coaches press conference following mind, you a pretty big win for him and his team won mind. You that set you back a half game? But still set you back. I wouldn't be celebrating. I wouldn't be having fun with that. And then you and this is what happens. This is why these conversations are difficult is because the Uber successful person that we're talking about in this case Gregg Popovich, Ken, and maybe we'll I don't know or others around them the stands around him. Well, look what he's done look at the resume. How dare you criticize one if not I can separate the two hopefully, you can't as well. Hopefully, you're not criticizing Gregg Popovich is rings. We're not criticizing decision that he made game seven against the heat. We're saying this isolated thing that happened Wednesday night following his team getting his ass, kicked was a bad look. And it's okay. It should be okay. To come out and say that pop we love you. You're all timer. Your resume. Stands navy the test of time in this league. But you crashing Michael Malone's press conference not. A good look, especially when you're talking about setting a record getting jetted sixty three seconds in and not the fascinating job that he and the nuggets have done. "A move on wednesday moving assistant coach becky hammon from behind the bench to now on the main bench is sitting alongside gregg popovich it's a promotion big promotion she's been a member of the spurs coaching staff since two thousand fourteen was one of six assistance under gregg popovich last season sitting behind the bench now she's in front she's being groomed right earlier on freddie and fitz simons and you talk to tony parker about her basketball mind as a former point guard i mean it is it's remarkable to hear how players at that level talk about her as a coach she is beyond respected so if there's going to be somebody that wasn't named nancy lieberman to be the i mean becky hammon is in line right now to be a head coach in the nba around a modern colorado state kind of kick the tires a bit and then went in another direction she was not going to wait she gets that question a lot she's talked about it a lot of people ask her what about coaching the men at colorado state and they kind of toyed with it for a bit and then she just pulled her name out saddam now i'm not going the bucks talked about hiring her this to your point i think you're spot on that she could be possibly their replacement to gregg popovich in san antonio she's beyond respected in that organization so weeks ago age won't around ski espn nba inside reported that gregg popovich is not expected to be an nba coach beyond twenty twenty that's the year in which will be the us men's basketball coach at the summer olympics in tokyo he'll be gone before then based on what agent awards and russky may have hinted may have heard chris madison yahoo sports he wondered if when that time comes replaced with gregg popovich becky hammon could get that job no matter what becky ham being moved to the front from the back is a big deal but here's something else about this gregg popovich whatever whenever the interview process happens it's going to be great to have somebody like that that can explain exactly how to go about things he's at plenty of former assistance get interviewed whether he got the job i did not get the first time but at least they were in there what to expect you can't know what to expect if you're not into having a chance the butts kicked the tires on her but it's one thing i don't know the bugs will really going to consider her but at least they thought enough about it granite interview is going to come to a point where she is going to be a leading candidate for a job in the nba having their kind of expertise to exactly how to go about it will be invaluable not just the becky hammon but even the team that's going to interview her and be eighteen number of coaches that sit directly behind the team on the bench the spurs organization for example has three assistance alongside gregg popovich on the main bench becky hammon is now one of those three assistants and comes with a pay increase as well sportscenter allnight espn radio back to the diamond.

"A bow on this who's to blame coach gregg popovich conversation and again this isn't about what's right or wrong about morality it's about the things we were just talking about whether you're gambling against a buddy or you're playing poker in the world of competition right and wrong the lines are a little less important maybe they met her a little bit less than you have to protect yourself gregg popovich didn't protect himself and his organization doesn't mean that he's the bag for all we know quite leonard behind the scenes advised by his uncle was in full diva mode was outrageously self interested and self absorbed maybe he was being so ridiculous that the comments tony parker popovich made were minor in the context of what was actually going on maybe the opposite you never know doesn't matter and this is what i'm worried that gregg popovich lost sight of gregg popovich isn't the talent gregg popovich is the guy that coaches the talent gregg popovich isn't the star player gregg popovich is the guy that coaches the star player and he's at a period in that organization's journey where tim duncan's gone tony parker's one hundred and four years old manos not the guy that used to be if he's back at all kawhi leonard had to be the focal point of this team it doesn't matter of was being a jerk or typical do you now difficult lebron james's do you know how many times people because when i covered lebron and i was hard on him in miami in a little bit in cleveland you went back people there in that organizations throughout the heat organization particular would would pull me as i in hallways and raise their voice yell and try to be charming but they their message was your awful oh you're terrible you don't know the brown the moment lebron left miami some of the same people reached out or would see me events seamy games and just fill my ear with stories about lebron being difficult the point is these guys these superstars not just in sports it's true in medias journal i mean how they're guys who aren't even superstars they just think they are who act like crazy people you have to manage the talent if you're the head coach and the gm of a basketball team you have to keep him happy you have to keep them there dan gilbert lost track of that reality and the bronze gonna leave and gregg popovich apparently did to no matter how hard it was behind the scenes because if kawhi wants to go at the end of the day no matter how brutally disrespectful or difficult or whatever the situation was quite leonard was doesn't matter whoever gets is going to be better basketball team because they have him and whoever loses quite the spurs are going to be a worse team because of it are eight five five two one two four cbs the phone number one quick phone call here michael and portland thanks for listening on the west coast you're on cbs sports radio hey man just wanted to say uh obviously the spurs are gifted at drafting players and so they see a player they like in the top five rains well how come i haven't heard anyone talk about them trading for one of those lottery picks plus maybe a player if a lottery team could get quiet for pick i'm sure they do it i don't know man i'm not sure that's enough i mean you're right that has all the leverage in one of the report says he's going to let people know teams know soon he will only sign the lakers year which drives the price down for the spurs the guy is still the second or this is the equivalent even though it's not as sexiest storyline it's the equivalent of if not lebron kevin durant or james harden being available think it's actually more i think kevin durant the better comparison he's on that level of excellence eight five five two one two four cbs we'll take some phone calls and a visit with tom haberstroh who does a great podcast formerly espn and analytics sabermetrics numbers guru a really good guy he covered he broke onto the scene that first year lebron was in miami so we'll hit a bunch of stuff with tom in just a moment on the show reiter than you with.

"And it's entirely possible that the game and its players maybe not the game but his players have moved by gregg popovich also possibles that i haven't heard this put out there before maybe it's not that at all maybe popovich created a culture and its unique and it's why his organization is unique it is about selflessness about guys taking less money it's about buying in the lack of glamour in that organization whether it's getting your endorsements whether it's being in san antonio whether it's being celebrated me tim duncan low key star tony parker pretty low key star david robinson who actually i'm going to have on the cbs sports hq show writer's block tomorrow will ask him about this pretty low key star military guy maybe in fact nothing's changed for the spurs maybe leonard move past them maybe he wasn't able as he stretched his wings and he started to get a bit of an ego and he started to get success and surrounded by sycophants whoever's around him usually it's his maybe he just couldn't fit in the confines of the culture that the spurs created maybe it's on koa maybe he's the guy who's being normal by the other twenty three standards of the other twenty nine teams in the association is being a relentless and intolerable diva by the standards of the spurs it's a different it's almost different universe there you go to san antonio and you go to that basketball organization and you step into almost an alternate universe and it's part of the reason that the spurs may play hardball in a way that people don't anticipate because everyone's judging by the standard of the rest of the league got a cave not gonna get anything everybody else would train them spurs her and everybody else few days ago on the show on monday jay don day now the head of the journalism program at northwestern the middle school of journalism secondbest j school in the world by the way am i z z missouri project take shots at guests omanis but i have to syracuse sister known of you care whatever we're all from where for we're from and i'm gonna i'm gonna be prideful jay don day ahead of that journalism school and longtime espn broadcaster writer great mba mind hit on this when he talked about his perspective and and guys like jr talking based on conversations with guys around the league his perspective that the spurs should absolutely not rush into a trade i would hold off on all the guoxin lakers he's not a free agent the spurs are going to do what's in their best interests and i don't see the need for them to do anything quickly either you know the operating philosophy i was remember that a general manager was told me he was in a similar situation with the star of the want it out and he said none of these traits are all these traits that are on the table they'll still be in february at the trade deadline so there's no need to move quickly you know whatever teams are offering now those offers aren't going to go away and if you wait there's a chance something better could come along circumstances change who's to blame this is going to be if coli goes elsewhere it's the end of.

"Sense of what he came into the league with and the reason i believed he had a chance you know when when i saw him play even in high school my initial reaction was i'm going to be cynical and tell all these analysts why they're wrong to anoint this guy and then i watched him play one game and i was like nope this is the one this is the first guy who has a chance to be better than michael jordan and i thought that back when i first saw him in high school just because there were certain things that popped off mean obviously a free athlete and obviously a basketball genius like you could see those things instantly and you don't get those two together very often all the physical tools mental tools so we came into the league like that and that's how he was able to get where he got early in his career but his skills weren't refined his skills weren't refined and gregg popovich took advantage of that eventually dallas took advantage of that whatever else was going on in that series to whether he was deferring to wade because he just got there but it made him look beatable and stoppable and it even created a mean that he wasn't clutch that he was a choker which hadn't existed before because he'd never choked before but he choked in that finals in the sense of people were expecting a big performance from him and he stunk it up since then he did refine the skills his game his jumper got better from everywhere now you can't play 'em like that that's still the way teams play him it's filled with the way teams would prefer that he beat them rather than getting to the rim every time or pass into his teammates for threes every time but he will beat you that way there are nights where he doesn't have his shot just like anybody else and i'm not saying he's the best shooter of all time but lebron james is now a good shooter with a wide array of shots he added that pet fadeaway really just this year kind of.
