"I am praying to the gods of basketball that he does. Okay. I lived through the jail blazers. It was terrible. I would like to see a great end to his career in Portland. Do you like Reggie Miller, who please say hi to him for me when he's and I love reginald. I stayed there the whole time got Kyle. I would love dame loader to stay in Portland. But if you're not going to build around him, then let him go. I agree, build around him. I look, that got billions of dollars. They can go pay everybody that they can possibly pay to come play with him. He's awesome. He's a character guy. He's just great. I know, but you're telling me things that we know, and I want him to stay there. But if you're not going, he said this, if you're going to have a young team, then maybe that's not the place for him. I love when players stay with the team, that they were drafted by. But you know, I'm sure that he wants to have something where these games mean something to him. He's another player that you don't watch during the regular season, then all of a sudden he shows up in the postseason, you go, God, that guy's unbelievable. Yeah. He's unbelievable during the regular season as well. Matthew and San Antonio, hey Matt, what's on your mind? Thank you, Dan, protecting the call. Called yesterday about I've been talking about it with when they felt like we won the national title or the NBA title last night. It was very, it's been a rough three years. So I just wanted to like, give the flowers to the San Antonio. Well, congratulations, Matthew. Yes, you called yesterday, and here you go. Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Victor won by Yama. Yes, Marc. Is it spurs at Lakers to open up the season? Yeah. All right. Sure. Christmas night. Christmas oh, they got competition from the NBA this year, though, games on Christmas. "He thought he was a unicorn and outside to in guy who's over 7 two who could shoot. And he's in a very nice career. The guy was just like 23 and 9. Those are really nice numbers and he shoots wealth on the outside, but porzingis is disappointed to a point and he was supposed to be that unicorn outside inside guy who's 7 three or taller. Yeah, went to the Knicks and then went to Dallas now with Washington and sort of forgotten about now. And you watch and it's not like he takes over a game or you go, oh my gosh, I haven't seen this. We're expecting one by Yama to be something we have not seen before. Yes, you. And I think if San Antonio fans might be hearing this conversation and be like, why are you guys crapping on this kid? When yesterday he was a hero, but it's not. It's the coverage of him. You know what I mean? It's the coverage. It's the there are people that are just going so overboard right now where yeah, he probably is a generational talent is a nice thing to use, but the greatest physical specimen ever to exist. I mean, we're getting a little crazy and you're putting expectations on a player that are going to be almost impossible to meet. If you say really good player, then that he'll beat the odds. Especially at that size because I mentioned this earlier that there have been 9 players 7 foot 5 or taller who played in the NBA. Yao Ming's the only one to average at least ten points per game. You know, you had Sean Bradley in there and manute poll, but, you know, he should be able to make the transition because he's grown up, understanding that the game is different. If this was 20 years ago, he'd be a back to the basket kind of player. Now you grow up, you play in Europe, you have to have a handle, you have to have a jump shot, you know, these are things that are required over there. Whereas here, it's more about, hey, can you dunk? How's your crossover? How's your highlight? I just hope we haven't set this kid up to have. Let's say the average is 15 and 7 next year. Would that be a disappointment? Probably. It will be to people, but it wouldn't be for me. Right. Like Yao Ming came in the league at 22. Three years more mature than one banana. And he was 13 and 8 and two blocks. He was nice, took three years later, he's averaged in 24 and 11 and four blocks. But it took a while. Yao didn't hit his stride till age 25. So I don't think there's going to be any patients with this kid. Well, what did Kevin Durant average his first year in Seattle? I think 28. I got checked, did he? Because there were a lot of questions about him, you know, just durability. How is he going to hold up? But theoretically, he's going to go to San Antonio and immediately be the number one option.

"The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick show, spurs win the NBA draft, poll question for the final hour is going to be what Seattle Connor. Well, Dan, we do have a leftover from yesterday's hit poll question, the cringey who will be him in the Celtics heat series. Oh, okay. Jason Tatum Jimmy Butler jaylen Brown or other. Who will be him? Yes. Okay. This is fun because when you post something like this on Twitter, people don't realize that it's meant to be a joke or like tongue in cheek. You're like, oh my God, what are you guys saying? It chill, it's just a tilt. Not everybody gets our sense of humor. True story. All right, so Reggie will join us coming up. Victor won by Yama is coming to San Antonio. They've done it again. If you look if I take Patrick Ewing out of this, the number one overall pick winning that lottery that you go, they were sure fires. So you got Shaq, you got Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Victor one by Yama. And LeBron. That's it. So the spurs have won three of those 5 lotteries. If you said that Victor won by Yama is going to be David Robinson, you'd say, absolutely. He'll live up to the hype. Can he be Tim Duncan, who's a top ten player of all time? Adrian wojnarowski, the NBA insider, talked about Mumbai's talents. This is the most highly anticipated player to ever enter the NBA. And this is maybe not only the greatest prospect in the NBA's history. Maybe the greatest prospect in the history of team sports. Wow. Okay. That's open to interpretation, but he's one of the more, he's one of the biggest curiosities that I can remember. Because we haven't seen him. We got to see LeBron is high school games run ESPN2. We got to see Lou alcindor play. You can go down the list of great players that we were waiting for them to play. Even arch Manning. You got to see his high school games if you wanted to. He's not even going to start at Texas this year. But that hype that build up one by Yama is he's not even Luca from the standpoint of we could see Lucas games and he had been playing against the against grown-ups in the European league since he was 15. One by Yama sort of emerged on the national scene the last year. Where you started to hear about he's growing, he's 7 5 wingspan 8 feet, and then he played over here a couple of games, showed that he had range, had handle and that ability to play defense inside and outside. He could almost be inside and play defense on the perimeter. That wingspan. So there's a curiosity with him. It's different than with LeBron or lewell cinder in my opinion, because I got to see that already. They were being called the greatest Kareem's the greatest college player of all time. And LeBron lived up to the hype after being called the chosen one at age 15 or 16. I watched a lot of NBA coverages past week and no one fired one person even have a measured take on women by like he could be great, but not all time great. It feels like all time or nothing. Is there any chance he could be Christoph's porzingis, who we thought a lot of.

"You. Let's go execute this match. I think we just that's exactly through it. Gregg Popovich coach of the year. I'm glad that we were able to unpack this on the pot house. You're right. Nobody. We have trauma for women but Yama sweepstakes right now. Rockets are 13 and 46 spurs, 1447 Detroit's 15 and 46. Then the 14 is Charlotte, who actually has looked pretty confident lately. I was texting you about this last night house. Yeah. That Hayward's been playing pretty well. They've won four straight. So it seems like they know Orlando's 25 and 36 their 5th. So Charlotte can actually try and they're kind of locked into the fourth spot. But Houston versus San Antonio versus Detroit, they've combined. It's an 8 game losing street 16 games in four games between those three. So that's where we're going. How so do you have for your next pick? It's the Utah jazz. I'm feeling, you know, at this point in the season, I want to be a glass half full. I like good stories. I like good storylines. When we were sitting in October, me you and trying to forecast which team is going to be openly planning for the web sweeps. They compiled a mismatched team full of cast offs and castaways. And God damn it, will hardy. And Lori, I really, I had to put Utah on here for Sarah. Because Rudy had to stand up to lower marketing and publicly put a live show to his face. In Utah. I think I have to stop calling him the finished Bard Yanni, which kind of hurts. I mean, I've been calling Lowry marketing in the finish bargnani since his arrival as a rookie. San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich Rambles About Columbus Day
"One happy Columbus day No it's not indigenous Americans They it's Columbus day Columbus what do we know about Columbus Gregg Popovich is a nut job and a basketball coach and not a very good one For the Antonio spurs San Antonio at a press conference on Friday on Christopher Columbus is a particularly in football and basketball There are no nothings seem to pretend that they know everything Here he is hat tip rumble cut to go I think the proclamation was obviously appropriate needed and all those sorts of things but I'm a little confused about our city And why it's indigenous people's day slash Columbus day Columbus I mean he initiated a new world genocide that's what he did And beginning with him and what he said in motion what followed that the annihilation of every indigenous person and Hispaniola which was Haiti and the Dominican Republic today That's what he did He took slaves he mutilated He murdered And we're going to say slash in honoring well I got to give the San Antonio independent school district a little bit of credit because at least they added indigenous peoples along with it And that's a step in the right direction But what the hell is Alamo heights thinking It's Columbus day That's why they're off On Monday

"Just feels like it would fit. I don't know what we would. But i would pay the here the Phone call between brett brown and gregg popovich though in terms of i would you know if there's no other reason just to hear brett brown voice that great accident again Also i mean the breslin element there to being that. I mean i'm gonna probably right about this at some point. I don't wanna spoil too much but he's a name that gets often reminiscent potential pop replacement to and and your own might knows better than me. But i think you know throughout the jimmy stuff. Whatever like i still been ben and brett have a pretty strong relationship. Neither australian thighs. And i think if there's any cocoon that can take him in and nurtured them back you know. I think it has san antonio with some influence of brett brown. Yeah it does always come back to you. Though i feel like every point we've hit today still comes back to but ben simmons has to evolve. And so that's what's interesting here again. We play this blame game on mba twitter and in the nba media sphere. Who's at fault for this mess. That's going on in philly you know going back to about the process. About darryl just not valuing people is it about doc rivers in the comments he made it or joy and beating the compliment ownership over empowering nbc simmons to the point where neither of those guys feels like. We're held accountable very often during their time in philly which i think is a fair point to but i think this is a basketball matter. There's always still comes back to. What's ben simmons going to do about. Ben simmons wherever he is and the fact is if he stayed if he if he had listened to their pleas. This week said you know what that's fine. I still want to be traded. But i'm gonna come back in the meantime and play and fulfill my commitment to the contract and to the team into my teammates. They'd be they'd be really good because they were already really good like i like. We've all talked about. Were these guys ultimately going to have to be split up as a basketball matter. That's been going on for years already. Even within the context of that conversation there's an acknowledgement that. Maybe there's a ceiling but that ceiling already pretty high. This is a team that made with a break or two could have been in the finals by now so it's not like it was unfixable or or dysfunctional like those guys could achieve at a high level together. They have so ultimate. Just comes down to the fact that ben simmons would just rather be somewhere else for reasons that we are not completely clear on because ben simmons himself has not articulated them and everything has come out via anonymous sourcing and so. It's interesting that way i want. Let's let's focus on simmons or on nbc for second. 'cause we've we've almost maybe let him off the hook David thorpe the coach who writes for true hoop and obviously former relief of espn. He was on the rights to ricky sanchez pod. Great sixer fan pot is as sixers pod guys know thorpe said this the other day quote if you think embiid is some kind of great teammate. Congratulations we don't agree. I don't think he's the worst made ever having had eighty some players in the nba. Meaning guys at the thorpe has worked with. I have a little insight into how different superstars can be. I would rank him very low so far meaning as a leader. I think and as a teammate. He's also young very full of himself..

"I just have to think the list would likely start with with current spo- especially because Your guy brad stevens. Just move data. Coaching now as well as missing executive i think brad might have been in the mix as well. So that's that's That's where i would start it. Yeah and i think one of the advantages sponsor may have would be if he were willing to commit to multiple cycles as the head coach. I mean he's guy in his early fifties looks and operates. He's in his early forties. I mean he's he's got the youth on his side in this particular circumstance. And i think that's important for usa basketball not to say they can't win with a changing of a coach every four years. They proved that they can go on for much chefs in two thousand sixteen. Gregg popovich in twenty twenty. But i think any time you can establish continuity within this usa basketball program. You should jump at it. And if spo- says i'll do at least two cycles with usa be. I think that would be appealing to a grant hill. And look even if it's only one because i think mike chef ski was there from basically twenty from two thousand six through twenty sixteen so he did it for a whole decade multiple olympics multiple tournaments. And you know there have been the kind of whispers that that pop himself was shocked that it was such a long run for coach k. And that jerry. Klenge didn't wanna make a change So that's i think one of the questions going forward is going to go back to. Is it just one cycle at a time. And we're going to rotate this position more but look even if it's only one cycle. Whoever is the next coach. Coaching the twenty twenty three worlds. I in the philippines and then twenty two thousand four olympics parasol. Whoever does it next is going to at least do to major tournaments. I think look as much trouble as they had getting players on this roster and certainly the pandemic too crazy seasons in a row where factors but i mean you you know how this works twenty. Twenty three th. It's not going to be a star lady team. Everyone who wants to play is gonna wanna be there at the olympics in two thousand twenty four and not necessarily in two thousand twenty three. So that's another issue for grant hill now replacing jerry colangelo. Can he get guys to commit for two tournaments in a row. You know it's funny. I was having this discussion with an nba journal manager. Recently and one thing he said to me was like i wouldn't want to send my star player to go play for expulsion. Not because it won't be a great experience but because it would be a great experience because you know a guy would go over there. Play under spoelstra. It's how good he is and always sudden. Become a recruiting ship for miami to have spoelstra an addition to being in miami and addition to being a successful team to have a coach that player x wherever that may be have a positive experience with him. So that's kind of the game..

So I'm not bailing on him either, you know, but he's got a obviously guys as Sheriff said he's got a snap out of it. All right. And so that's that and then Booker. I just say one thing off one little. Yeah. But about Booker get smarter on defense. He never been a great defender. Bobby's got better. Now trouble to start with cuz he commits bad battles. Yep. Yep. Well, I mean to the other thing, you know, normally we talked about. Well, one team has a major advantage here. We're going on the final three games. They've been there before, right? They've been there but we can't say that nobody's been there before other than Jae Crowder, you know you're right. No, it's that's the fun of the fun. I'm going to give you a guy that it wouldn't surprise me if he, if he gets 20 points. He has turned out to be a wild card. He is the Joker in the deck, folks, I mean I think about what he did when they didn't have Chris call at that number. If you say yes, Bruce and his stuff he can do, he can do things, he can make it 3 and he can go to that basket. And he's got that job, you know, high off the glass, you know, they get the ball over, anybody thing going down, he's figured out now or I can go for 10. I mean he's not a great player but he said, interesting player and off and conceptually a very useful player. I expect in one of the remaining games him to play a prominent role. All right? So you mentioned, we talked about Chris Middleton, he's one of the three players that is going to join the Olympic team. Once this series is over or expected to join. Hopefully join quiz. Lord knows they, they need all the help, they can get right now. So Middleton Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker. All supposed to join the team before they go to Tokyo. This team has lost two exhibition games to Nigeria to Australia. They they rallied. They bounced back in. May be Tarzan Tina in a huge game cuz if they got over three, I think the, the sky would have been falling on this group. Gregg Popovich is going at reporters. That question. God forbid. Get some shots up. Get some continuity. But y'all, let's get it together. Team USA is nine and five and exhibitions under Gregg Popovich. We miss Mike Stachowski. So I was horrified by what I saw last night and hopefully the additions of Booker and Drew Holiday and Middleton When those guys get done with the NBA finals, and they can get on the plane and get out to Japan, hopefully that rights the ship because right now I don't think Team USA is going to win the gold medal. Can't believe I'm saying that. All right. No more of that. "I like it defensively. Maybe there's some some questions their birth I think it's a fairly realistic offseason there the challenge though. I think the biggest hurdle to clear well there's two of them, treze Woody actually sign up to go to Sacramento if not then you're looking at trading something else along with Cooper maybe it's k c p. How do you want to do? You want to go that far, right? So you'd have to put something else into the deal. If Treads wasn't willing to do that or if you just gets a bigger offer elsewhere, keep an eye on Charlotte in the in the trans situation, Charlotte was after him last season, there were some rumors around the middle of the year around the trade deadline. That trades, might go to Charlotte, that they might be interested in trading for him. I would keep an eye on them as a landing spot for him and for you should see. But other than that I think it's it's a pretty decent plan there. Renee vandervelden from YouTube and another Super Chat. Thank you said will Jamal Murray get traded to the Lakers I say this a bunch. I Say, Never Say, Never but no, Jamal Murray is not getting traded in the lake. I know there was something. He liked a comment on Instagram. I think he's not getting traded to the Lego Denver would. If Denver suddenly decided we have to trade, Jamal Murray for whatever reason, right? Just Insanity, grip them and they had to trade. Jamal Murray thought they were traded me, they would trade him somewhere else. They would not give him to the Lakers. I think that's like the Spurs Gregg. Popovich would never trade guys to the Lakers to make them better Lakers eliminated and not so recently, now that wouldn't send Jamal Murray to the Lakers but one can dream right Barbara. And that's and that's the other piece of the DeRozan situation, right? Like in Frozen, if you're going to try to get him in a sign, a trade with some people have suggested The Spurs have to be willing to deal with the Lakers. And that's that's a hurdle to clear, right there. I mean Gregg Popovich was one of the guys that was complaining about Powell Gasol, coming to the Lakers one of the guys that tried to stop. Anthony Davis from coming to the left of these things matter. So, yeah, absolutely Thai from YouTube said, these dudes are tripping DeRozan's never taking less money for Lowry that may very well..

"I thought this story was really interesting. Becky Hammond. Trailblazer obviously was interviewing for the Trail Blazers head coaching job and she actually got through the process all the way to the ownership level. At that point in time. The Blazers reached out to the Spurs, where she's a longtime assisted under Gregg Popovich. Jake Fisher of Bleach report reported this Hammond impressed Portland officials and was generally liked amongst Blazer staffers, sources said. But when Portland reached out for Intel from San Antonio The background on Hammond was not nearly as complementary pertaining to various aspects of day to day coaching responsibilities. That sentiment has been echoed by sources around the league Blazers personnel cast doubt that Hammond was the candidate to steer the ship through such delicate waters with Lillard. This is interesting from two standpoints in my estimation, number one. Isn't it weird? To think of San Antonio, not propping up. An assistant coach. San Antonio is such a tight organization that you are with us or against us. It's very patriots like thing, and you would imagine. I would have imagined. That if Becky Hammond was going to get any criticism from anywhere in the league, the last place was going to be where she works that the San Antonio staff would never say anything bad about anybody else. The San Antonio Organization would never, ever ever criticize somebody within their organizations. So that was the first. Wow that came out of left field. According to this report. The second one is Wherever Becky Hammon ends up getting the head coaching job or if it's another female head coach. Whoever is the first female head coach of the NBA. There is going to be such unbelievable pressure on that person. Because, of course if it fails Then automatically female candidates will be summarily dismissed. Well, you see, you got to have a guy coaching. So getting it right is of the absolute utmost importance. And who knows who that's gonna be. I bring up Jackie Robinson, a number of of Reasons why I bring him up quite often is because as a pioneer Jackie Robinson couldn't just be a black baseball player. Jackie Robinson had to be a great black baseball player who also was not going to ever lash out, fight back and be able to navigate those waters. The fact that Jackie Robinson is a baseball Hall of Famer and in Cooperstown. Is not just because the color of his skin he was a great baseball player. I mean, think about walking into the league in 1947. As the first ever black baseball player in Major League baseball and immediately winning a vote. By a white press corps for rookie of the year. He was that good right off the bat. So branch Rickey knew this. And the Dodgers knew this that they had to not only have a guy with the temperament to be able to navigate, but he had to be great. Not good, Great. If he was not great. That baseball executives could easily say Ah, you see, Same thing with Becky or whoever the first female head coach is. There will be such scrutiny. And an ease for people to say. See Got to be a guy. At this higher is soul important. Becky got to the ownership level in Portland, which is really, really impressive. He chose Chauncey Billups. We'll see how it unfolds. So right now, Moresby on this absolute hot streak, and he's kind of like Jordan against the Blazers in the NBA Finals. He's just shrugging his shoulders. Everything that he throws up. You can't miss Canadian Bacon was easily by far his greatest Canadian bacon ever this morning. "As we saw, Um there's no doubt I was going to say arguably, there's no arguably part of this conversation. The best trio of induct ease into the Hall of Fame in the face with the Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday as we saw Kobe Bryant going in Kevin Garnett and also Tim Duncan, and just a really, I didn't know I was gonna be emotional on this amber like I kind of wrap my head around Vanessa Bryant taking to the stage, but Seeing Kevin Garnett. They're seeing Tim Duncan get emotional Being a kid that grew up in San Antonio. During those runs like this is I felt not only a great trio But just a great time that we saw the MBA truly have the stars that I feel sometimes is a little bit lacking in the N B. A As of right here in 2021. Well in Tim Duncan's a guy who we don't normally see the emotion from I'm in your spurs van. You grew up in San Antonio like you mentioned so to you, Tim Duncan was your guy You cover the Spurs. For a lot of years, and you even said that you really hadn't seen the personality from Tim Duncan. He really kept that to himself over the years during his playing career, and you saw it yesterday during his speech. That was a lot of fun to see. That was the moment actually, when he got emotional about pop was the moment that I got emotional because I wasn't ready for it. I didn't expect that I didn't see it coming. But it was great to see Here's Tim Duncan talking about Gregg Popovich in the influence he had on his career. Finally.
LaMarcus Aldridge to move on from Spurs
"All right. So here's the deal lamarcus aldridge. Laker fans is available. And it's not just a report. This is not like speculation. This isn't sources this legitimately gregg popovich telling the world that he's available gregg popovich earlier. We've mutually agreed for him. Lamarcus to work on some opportunities elsewhere. He went on to talk about. How lamarcus has been a great teammate. Etcetera etcetera etcetera. But tim macmahon has a story up right now which i will re tweet that lamarcus in him and the spurs are have divorced looming and that they will be able to trade this time all star instead of buying him out there optimistic. The spurs are of that.

"I mean, they have really played good football over the past couple of months. We've talked about it a little bit this week in some last week with the chief's, especially after the A F C championship game, and how you know most of their games for the regular season. We're one score games. They want a lot of games by one score or less. And then the playoffs started and it just seems like It's a bad comparison. But the only one I can think of to the warriors when they were first, you know, getting going and how they could look asleep for the first half of the game, And then the second half would start and they were just able because they were so good offensively to just turn it on. And the NFL's a lot more difficult than the MBA. But do the chiefs have that ability to just flip the switch offensively and his anti Regis, such a good play caller that He's kind of played the whole regular season vanilla and now they're just Hey, where the Chiefs again and we could just turn it on when the playoffs start. You know, it's funny. You ask that because that is really my main fear here is that you know if you just look at it objectively and look at the two teams side by side based on what they did, you know their body of work for the season. Not unless you're saying their win loss record right? Anybody with common sense that follows this. Ford knows that you can't just look at a sample of you know, whatever. It is 16 18 games, including the playoffs and looking to win loss record and make your decision from there. You really look at, you know, go game by game. Look at the advanced metrics Look out Good. These teams played on both sides of the ball of special teams as well. And, you know, put them side by side and pick a winner. You know, you could make the case for Tampa Bay. You really can But your point is exactly right And there there is some backing out there. I know the guys over a pro football focus kind of looked at that do does the anti replay call and get margaritas? Later in the year is the playoffs get closer and in the playoffs, and the answer is yes s. Oh, that makes me that's what really scares me about this or they got to come out and just play it 100% be able to turn it on. And just blow the doors off the team like camp today. I think it's I think it's possible and that's what that's what concerns me here. So, um, you know, we'll we'll see what they do. But objectively speaking, I think it's it's a close game. On paper. We're previewing Super Bowl 55 with my client from ESPN. It's blanket of Donald here on ESPN, 1000 and the ESPN Chicago APP. When we start to look at some of the player props for Sunday, What do you see with Tom Brady? Is there anything appealing that we should keep our eyes on? Yeah, absolutely. I actually have a whole bunch of player prospect at our ESPN dot com. We have our call him up for the week with our whole team, all the pics and there's a ton of them. Which is a case for everybody. I mean, G. There's there's a laundry list to choose from for the Super Bowl. It's unbelievable. This has to be a new record as well for just your options for player crops, but For a brief specifically, I like the over 2.5 passing touchdowns. Like I said, you know, the last time the Buccaneers often didn't score at least three touchdowns this week nine and that blowout loss to the things it's been a long time. On. They did so against the Chiefs when they played earlier this season. Brady himself is thrown at least three touchdowns and eight of his 19 games this season..

"The voice of one Steve Nash, who sounds much calmer and in his element when he's actually talking about basketball, and he certainly understands meshing star players, their games their personalities. But that's how he's going to be judged in Brooklyn. It may not be his fault if this group doesn't pay it out, and if they don't end up Fulfilling expectations. Brooklyn's got a Big three and Steve Nash is the one who is expected to Manage the egos managed the playing time managed two shots. It's that kind of a catch 22 right if they don't listen to him, and they see him or as there, buddy. Instead of their coach. He certainly not. Ah, Gregg Popovich type of a personality or Gregg Popovich type of I don't think dictator cause that's not fair, but he's not that type of an authority figure. He's gonna be judged on how this group does. He's been handed a Hornets nest. It is interesting as as I'm even now looking at the replay of nets and Nix. On TV in my studio that Mike D'Antoni is sitting right next to Steve Nash s Oh, my D'Antoni. Of course. He was let go by Houston and ends up on the The bench in Brooklyn. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. I wish I knew the answer to that. Did that happen before after James Harden demanded a trade to Brooklyn took a little while for it to pay it out. Hear the call on the Net radio network as Kevin Durant's and the missing Kyrie Irving now have a new teammate 855 to 1 to 4 to 27855 to 1 to 4 CBS. Jeff Green is a veteran on that nest team. He's been around, He's seen pretty much everything there is to see in the MBA. He's gonna do what he does best, and I think it be be good for us, but I don't look at it as a restart. You know, it's just another juice and energy that we're going to get from. You know him being on the floor and being part of Steve Oh, boy, The Nets got James. Hard.
San Antonio Spurs' Becky Hammon Becomes First Woman To Act As Head Coach Of An NBA Team
"Ham in the assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs since 2014 had to take over in the second quarter when head coach Gregg Popovich was ejected by officials for shouting and entering the court. Popovich event told him and you got him. Unfortunately, the Spurs lost to the Los Angeles Lakers stars at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University will have the ability to
San Antonio Spurs fail to reach playoffs for first time since 1997
"Head coach Gregg Popovich was in no mood to reminisce about the previous 22 n BA seasons yesterday after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1997 usually salty pop said, looking at the past doesn't do much good. He was focused on the present proud that his team gave itself a chance to keep that streak going. So let's do the reminiscing for him 22 consecutive trips to the playoffs ties for the longest such streak in you. NBA history. The run includes five titles, another trip to the finals and four other trip to the conference finals. They averaged over 55 regular season winds. Yes, they had a whole of fame head coach Plus Hall of Fame players, But nothing is easy. So money teams have down years but not the Spurs. At least for 23 years. I'm injured.
Orlando Magic's Jonathan Isaac explains why he didn't take knee or wear Black Lives Matter shirt Friday
"We had an incredible opening weekend of games name a star level player that player delivered at least once if not twice over the first three or four nights of the NBA's restart here in Orlando, we had crazy comeback wins. By the Houston Rockets, we had a dominant performance by. Jaanus over some little pesky pip squeak team from New England I forget who they might be. We got Marcus smart got fined for trying to work the officials. We've got storylines upon story lines. The clippers bounce back from their loss to the Lakers. Looking excellent and just throttling the New Orleans Pelicans. There's so many different directions that we can go Michael that I decided. Here's what we're GONNA do opening weekend heaters we're GONNA have just open ended questions are we're going to ping pong back and forth you give me your answers I'm going to give you my answers to these questions and try to cover as much ground as possible before we get there though I do want to double back quickly on the national anthem demonstrations that we touched on last episode, we got so many thoughtful emails from various members of the open floor globe on this subject, but I think there was a major development after we spoke on Friday. and. That involve Jonathan Isaac Meyers. Leonard Gregg Popovich Becky Hammon and one of the NBA referees all deciding to not kneel to not really participate in what had been in unified demonstration on Thursday. All of those people who chose to stand were obviously doing it on principle and they were doing it knowing there was going to be a lot of attention their direction. Now, if you look at Popovich amend the referee essentially, they were trying to just say, Hey, I support the the Social Justice Movement it's it's a private or personal decision for the referee said look I it's important to me to stand Meyers Leonard made a similar comment. Essentially. Saying that his brothers military service in the in the military service of close people in his life led him to WanNa stand to salute the flag. But within Isaac was a slightly different case and he actually used this entire demonstration opportunity to almost have a one man demonstration of his own. In his belief, the idea of the black lives matters movement quote unquote doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. He also said that you know we shouldn't be necessarily judging things solely based on skin color that we should be trying to live a life basically you know in God's mold and try to live up to his standard, and that Jesus Christ was his personal savior and and that he wanted everyone to focus on that. Aspect of of living rather than the particular issue that was being brought forward with the black lives matter movement by the players he didn't really get any major pushback. Within the NBA Community people respected his right to make a stand. He actually not only did he stand during the national anthem? He didn't wear a black lives matter t shirt which many people notice because he was essentially the only player not to do that his whole personal story Michael took a crazy twist over the weekend and sad twist when he wound up tearing his ACL injury that's going to end his time here in Orlando obviously but also could cost him all of next season. So now talk about a whirlwind seventy, two hours for player who generated millions of us with his comments about the protests. I'm curious. Let's start with Jonathan Isaac. What did you make of his decision? After we've seen things settle in the last couple of days You know maybe it doesn't seem quite as Eye Opening as it did at that moment, but I'll admit I was I was surprised to see given the buy in from everybody on opening night. Right, I mean I just WanNa Start and say that it it really really is a bummer to see anyone get injured but particularly is ICK who was already on restriction he was already playing with a humongous brace on his leg from a previous injury that cost him a majority of this regular season before it was suspended. So I just I feel for him greatly. I I think generally speaking. The coverage of who stands in who sits I mean we talked about this heading in anticipated it I. Think I think the coverage is generally besides the point and it doesn't really get the point I feel like people are using. This as an opportunity to shame those who are standing in a little bit I mean Meyers Leonard. said, he couldn't sleep before he made the decision to stand and that's just like not. The whole focus or the point here right like. You can obviously Support Black lives and also stand for the national anthem. It is a symbolic gesture that is what it is in the case of Isaac. I really had a difficult time understanding even what his message was until you interpreted it the way that you did I mean I watched the clip of Him Multiple Times survey there I'm GonNa just GonNa read what he said I and then we can use that as a jumping off point because I don't WanNa torture what he said earlier and I might have done that. So sorry for that. He says quote absolutely I believe that black lives matter kneeling while wearing a black lives matter t shirt doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. I. Don't think kneeling or putting on a T. shirt for me personally is the answer i. Feel like for me, black lives are supported through the Gospel. All lives are supported through the Gospel. We all have things that we do wrong. Sometimes, it gets into a place of pointing fingers. We all fall short of God's glory whoever will humble themselves and seek God and repent of their sins. We can see our mistakes and people's mistakes and evil in a different light. Racism isn't the only thing that flags our society, our nation and our world, and he basically said he wanted this conversation to get out of the realm of skin color because the answer to all of our problems in everything that goes on in our world is Jesus. So. when I watched the clip. I'll I'll be honest. I was a little confused where he was going to after typing it all out trying to marinate on what he was saying I think he essentially wanted to have a demonstration on behalf of his religious beliefs and that this was an opportunity for him to say look you know focusing only on one particular group I. Guess in his view, the black lives matter group and you know everybody wearing a t-shirt doesn't necessarily achieve the wider goal which would be presumably healthy living. You know honest living you know Living which to him as a higher priority I think that's where he was going with his statements.
Gregg Popovich knocks NFL, Roger Goodell in discussion of race
"Gregg Popovich coaches in the NBA but that's not stopping him from sharing some choice words for the NFL pop told The New York Times NFL commissioner Roger Goodell got intimidated and folded when president trump went after NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem and called it hypocritical that seven league owners gave million dollar donations to the trump campaign four years ago and now talk with staff and players quote about injustices in democracy and how to protest Popovich is always been outspoken on social issues especially in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing Robert fort

Spurs get Tim Duncan first win as acting head coach
"Duncan join the Spurs and assistant coach this season and last night. He got his first win as acting head coach and he filled in for Gregg Popovich. Pop Pop took a personal day so he didn't take much credit for the win. He said it was coached by committee. He was coached by committee. Effort also asked being a head. Coach is something he would pursue down the road and he gave a strong nope.

Report: NBA Considering $1M Per Player Purse for Proposed In-Season Tournament
"Yeah there's a story that broke today and as we talked about before with Jason that the NBA is trying to get some excitement in the dog days of the NBA season I'm from my perspective I think the NBA season is too long okay it is in the NBA's they're severely struggling right now they are not getting the ratings not many people are watching the games because like you said the season has gone very long the load management I'm using air quotes their load management prize affecting all the NBA because you'll go to a game on a Tuesday you want to go see the clippers play quite letters ninety playing a game because he's not hurt he he's he's not injured anything he's just tired he got on a plane that has become a serious issue started by Gregg Popovich yeah we had now will it be Adam silver the commissioners his plan is to shorten the NBA season by a few games and at a mid season tournament in between thanksgiving Christmas that importance and interest to those games so they'll have a parliament and mid season tournament between thanksgiving and Christmas and as of reported this this week by Adam Adrian we're now ski there the NBA's is discussing adding a one million dollar per player purse for the winners of the proposed thirty team and sees in turn amid wailing I it's a great incentive for these teams to want to go with this alternate plan of a season can you imagine if you're the night man on a good basketball team and you're gonna get a million dollars he also went yeah I am all for this plan because I I agree I I love the NBA but I'm not watching it right now because this part of the season I know you know every game does matter to an extent but it's the most boring part of the season right now besides upcoming Christmas games you know there's not much to watch for unless you're a Die Hard fan and if right now there is a tournament going on maybe in Las Vegas between all thirty teams you know that would that would that would be I would be so much fun because it is a second playoffs it is a not as important playoffs the NBA you'll get a lot more fans involved yeah I'm more games more important games to watch there was something on the line at the end of December they're few and far between last night yeah the rockets in the clippers and rockets one one twenty two to one seventeen that was much watching your hardcore basketball fan because of Hardin kawaii so right but right now it if the Cavaliers and the bulls are on ESPN on a Monday night unless I'm from Cleveland Chicago you're not allowed to watch them game you're not you know what is the re what is the point to watch the game because it is gonna be boring it is going to be slow and it's that really has no effect on the season but if they have it in season tournament while all the teams participating that will be fun to watch it will bring more interest in the NB absolutely I think them adding that one million dollar purse per player to the winners that's got to entice every NBA team to say Hey rich news should do this route why don't rich dude we all get Richard rich dudes
Houston Rockets gear no longer sold on Chinese sites
"Well began on Friday with rockets general manager Darryl Lori putting out a tweet that was an image that expressed support for the Hong Kong Freedom Movement the controversy began when the rockets Maury fired off this tweet fight for freedom stand with Hong Kong that statement of support for hypocrisy protesters was seen as an affront to the teams Chinese fan base tweet was quickly deleted but the damage was already done Tillman for the her of the Houston Rockets this does the rockets very quickly teams owner tweeting more he does not speak for the Houston Rockets China reacted strongly they condemned Daryl's comments China's council the General in Huston urge the team to clarify and immediately correct mistakes any statement on Sunday is the NBA there was shock at just how big a story this has become and now we have a geopolitical incident that was affected really sparked with one tweet Chris Mannix you've been covering the story for sports illustrated do you have any idea why Daryl Morey tweeted support for Hong Kong all of a sudden no I've known Daryl Morey for a longtime he's an incredibly smart guy I don't know what was the impetus for the tweet and it's interesting that he would do that just because Daryl's been the GM of the rockets for a long time and Darryl knows full well the influence of the rockets in the NBA on China Darryl is the GM of a team that was the home of Ya Ming one of the biggest international stars ever so he knows exactly what kind of effect this is going to have and he went out there and did it all the same aside from China getting angry have there been any consequences for the NBA well ten cent which has a long standing deal with the NBA they stream the majority of the NBA Games they're responsible for the close to five hundred million viewers that are watching NBA Basketball in China they announced that they will stop showing Houston Rockets Games the Chinese Basketball Association which ironically is run by Ming at this point they said that they were cutting ties with the Houston Rockets its sponsors affiliated with China pulled away from the rockets so anything Chinese effectively severed their ties with the rockets in a very short period of time okay so China got mad the rockets owner tried to sweep it under the rug I saw rockets players trying to deal with this James Hardie it was like apologize we love we love no plane you know we appreciate the support that they give us individually in as an organization so we love you but how did the NBA itself react all the NBA's reaction wasn't great we reported the NBA statement saying we recognize that the views expressed the Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey have deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China which is regrettable it really this is supposed to be the woke league they did say in that kind of word salad of a statement that Darryl had the right to say anything he wanted but they said that he had to write saving educated on the matter and that rang a little hollow with some people so wasn't a very strong statement in the NBA face pretty swift backlash Senator Ted Cruz Texas Republican said the NBA is quote shamefully retreating in pursuit of big money Democratic presidential candidate who Castro says the US shouldn't allow American citizens to be bullied by authoritarian government they walk it back at the NBA walked that statement back very quickly so you'd you know Adam Silver who was over in Asia anyway as part of these international games that are taking place right now he made a much more forceful state in a statement that frankly better reflects I think what the NBA really stands for the long held values of the are to support freedom of expression and certainly freedom of expression by members of the NBA Community and in this case they're more as the general manager of the Houston Rockets enjoys dat right as one of our employees I understand that there are consequences from that exercise of an essence his freedom of speech and we will have to live with those consequences in the NBA coaches like Steve Curry Gregg Popovich takes wrong positions on domestic issues Gregg Popovich was quoted calling Donald Trump a soulless coward wonder what the people sick about who votes good for him where they're line is how much they can take where does the morality and decency kick in NBA didn't have anything to say on that publicly so the NBA really can't take a position on Daryl morey saying what he said publicly so the NBA initially kind of bungling their reaction they recovered pretty quickly and put out a statement that I think better reflects positions how're the NBA state Vince perceived in China it seems like you know anything short of Daryl Morey being fired and his comments being disavowed is not going to satisfy the Chinese government the Chinese Basketball Association or anybody that might be involved with this story they came out with some statements of their own saying eh agreed with the NBA's position on this but the NBA has stood pretty firm and that's really all they can do at this point there's a good chance that the NBA loses some money as a result of this but in the grand scheme of things the NBA doesn't need that money to survive so it's a bad situation the end I would like no part of but it doesn't really affect their bottom line so who needs who more here does does the NBA China does China need the NBA more I would argue that China needs the NBA more than the NBA needs China I mean China can't walk back decades of NBA basketball being in Deuce to its population and more than a billion people the NBA proudly touted the number of people that play basketball in China it's three hundred million they talk about the number the watch basketball in China it's just under five hundred million about twenty one million people watch game six of the NBA finals this past year that's an astronomical number even for a domestic viewership you can't just take that away from people in not expect people to want it back there really isn't a alternative in China they have the Chinese Basketball Association but it's nowhere near the level of basketball that the NBA plays on these stars from the NBA from Lebron James James Harden to Steph curry they are close to household names in China people by their sneakers they wear their jerseys he's but it's still unclear exactly how far China's willing to take this do you think right now the NBA is regretting how open it is on speech I mean the NBA has proudly empowered its players to speak up to be political Lebron's spoken up a lot on race steph curry and some of the other warriors have spoken out against trump coaches give political speeches can the NBA walk that back when comes to China when it's so encouraged here no the NBA can't walk any of this back in they have to live with situations like this they simply can't turn around and create new policy that says players can't speak on political issues or social issues and frankly I don't believe the NBA would do that the NBA's organization has established itself as a progressive one knows just back in two thousand sixteen when the NBA pulled an all star game out of Charlotte because the League disagreed with the North Carolina Bathroom Bill they've Asian themselves as a league willing to take stands on these types of things frankly I think the NBA relishes the attention that it's players get for taking stands on issues like this so behind the scenes maybe there's some conversation taking place some reminders about just how much money is being brought in in foreign markets but overall the NBA's not gonNa stop anyone from saying anything about any particular issue the
NBA commissioner defends free speech as China threatens league
"NBA commissioner Adam silver is standing firm after receiving a lot of backlash over his view on the Hong Kong protests USA's Tim Berg reports silver has been trying to find middle ground of showing support for team executive who spoke out for Hong Kong's protesters and protecting the league's growth in a basketball craze China silver statements have Democrats and Republicans criticizing the NBA commission to which Beverly hall Burke president of the district media group says when was the last time you saw Ted Cruz injection right I agree on anything apparently there are still some issues that bring Republicans and Democrats together and I think this is one that definitely warrants it what's interesting about it is that Adam silver who is the NBA commissioner has long said that he stands up for the free speech rights of players in those affiliated with the NBA you mentioned some examples there when players have spoken out you had lebron James who's called president trump the bomb you have coaches Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich who have tweeted about their position on gun control but apparently it's a step too far when you call out the Chinese government indirectly in and something to know about China they kill their citizens currently there are three million people who are in concentration camps you can stand up for the Chinese people and still call out the Chinese government but I think what this comes down to and people are rightly seen that the messaging war on this it really shows of the NBA's bottom line is about the bottom line Hoiberg was speaking there on fox
