"And at Bloomberg quick take He's a Bloomberg business lash Stocks eased off losses after data indicated that consumer prices accelerated at the fastest pace since 19 90 You remember 1998 it was a long time ago What was the number one song What do you step up How about holding on with Wilson Phillips Hold on as numbers from the CPI are adding to evidence of building inflationary pressures How about those markets The S&P is now a little changed down to the Dow is down a tenth of a percent down 40 in the NASDAQ is down a tenth of a percent down 23 The ten year is currently down 1130 seconds with the yield of 1.48% West Texas intermediate crude went from green to Reddit's down three tenths of a percent of 83 90 a barrel comics golds up 1.7% in 1861 90 an ounce The dollar yen one 1367 the Euro dollar 1544 The British founded 35 O 5 And what are you spending more money on Higher prices for energy shelter food and vehicles fueled the supercharged meeting and indicated inflation is broadening out beyond categories associated with reopening That is a Bloomberg business flash Bloomberg markets continues now shanali bassick and Matt Miller Thank you so much dude Gregg Jarrett there with your Bloomberg business flash Now let's get over to Lisa Ericsson right now Senior VP and co had a public markets the public markets group at U.S. bank wealth management Lisa I wonder what you think as we look at inflation numbers that are either shockingly high like the PPI number yesterday or even higher than expected The CPI number today does that concern you Well absolutely Matt It's something that we're keeping an eye on and while our base case is that some of those inflationary pressures do come down over the remainder of this year and into 2022 Certainly the fact that we've got a pretty broad based basket of goods that are contributing to the inflation number and the fact that it's taking some time for both the labor market and the supply chains to adjust is something that we want to keep our eyes on Right Simpson inflation is so broad based I'm wondering what concerns you the most Energy is a really easy thing to point at and think about the ripple effects for But are there places that are maybe less obvious that we should also be concerned about Yeah Well I think to your point it's really two things So one is just the fact that it's really across a broader base So while you have some areas like energy that can be more volatile over time what you see is over the last few months is really looking at the basket of goods It's not just some of the areas that historically can fluctuate as much but also some of the stickier types of pricing that are increasing So that really is a concern And I think the other issue is how much that then begins to affect inflation expectations going forward And as we look at it what we see is that there are some elevation in inflation expectations over the next couple of years as a result But over the longer term what we see is that those are trending down So again that's the other thing I think we really want to watch is not just where the basket goes right now but how that's affecting the expectations going forward What do you expect in terms of the S&P 500 right now We're think up about 25 26% year to date Last year was a good 17% gain the year before that was almost 30% Can we really move much further higher Yes great question that Well we're still optimistic on the U.S. equity market and the S&P 500 and the reason why is overall if you look at it We've got a pretty nice context despite what some of the worries we are talking about with respect to inflation If you step back and look at the indicators underpinning growth for example their universally strong and we see the trend of movement of those indicators as continuing to be positive when we measure across a broad range And that's also being reflected in corporate earnings So as we all know third quarter earnings reports came in very nicely and that again was across the board as opposed to being limited to a couple of sectors So you've got the fundamental support there for the market I think to your point as we move into 2022 the question is really going to be how that continues to play out as some of the initial reopening spurt comes off And then again as we've been talking about with the trajectory of what's going to happen with inflation There's been so much talk about bubbles lately All year really And then we've kept on charging higher Matt and I were looking at the screens just the rivian IPO today is set for a very healthy pop as it starts to trade And so or unhealthy depending on how you look at it Depending on that that was our big debate Do you pop or not And so that's the thing Are you worried about valuations If everybody is so constructive here at what point do you start to get concerns that things are worth so much more than they're actually earning Yeah no that's a great point And valuations is something to keep an eye on But as we look at it I think just the current low level of interest rates really actually makes it valuations and what we would call the high side affair but not excessive So if you just look again at history and how much earnings yields are pricing over we're interest rates are now We actually see that they're above average meaning that stocks are actually giving you a nice premium in terms of the potential return relative to fixed income compared to that spread historically So again it's something we want to keep an eye on but in an environment like today where again you see both the macro indicators as well as what's going on with corporate operations and earnings coming in very nicely Those valuations can be more easily justified Lisa great to get some time with you Thanks so much for joining us Lisa Ericsson there senior VP And co head of the public markets group at U.S. bank wealth management So Chanel you and I were talking a little bit about the valuations or the pop that you sometimes see in an IPO And I have to wonder is that a good thing when you get a 50% pop like we're seeing with rivian right now or have they left too much money on the table Well that's the big thing These days Matt you have venture capitalists companies very much complaining very loud about these IPO pops because they do feel like they're leaving money on the table in the IPO With that said rivian is the 6 biggest IPO ever on a U.S. stock exchange It's the biggest IPO of the year You can make the argument that did you really need to raise much more money Investors Oh true Also it generates a lot of really positive momentum for retail investors We'll continue to talk about it throughout the program Blu-ray markets brought to you by Commonwealth "That's a Bloomberg business flash Bloomberg markets continues with Paul Sweeney and Matt Miller Gregg Jarrett thank you very much for that Greg Share it with your Bloomberg business flash Now let's get to the world of crypto but also commodities James Ross days here CIO and founding partner coast capital He can talk about the whole gamut Ask first though about the moves behind Bitcoin And the rest of the crypto space it's not all moving in the same direction I see still a lot of red on my screen when I look at crypto and someone tweeted to me you know why isn't riot mimicking Bitcoin Why aren't we see this rising tide lifting all those James Really interesting question I think that we could speak about it until we're in ruin the face and not really reach a conclusion That's the sale of crypto I think look here's a problem I think that Katherine thinks to Bitcoin expecting one thing or a load to become the next Bitcoin I think we'll be correct because any given crystal currency that we look at has technical flaws and shortcomings which means that following generations may be better will offset those shortcomings And in a weird way and without getting into too much technical detail the more we offset the security concerns or the more we address the security concerns around certain for a given cryptocurrency the less usable it might become So there's almost like a it's very very difficult to get any one cryptocurrency to become a monetary unit that's why the adoptable white usable never mind the fact the governments around the world are never going to let that happen to begin with So I very respectfully view the whole cryptocurrency phase as or quicker currency universe as being full of various iterations of Bitcoin some of them should be trading at a notable premium to Bitcoin technical based on their technical merits Some of which last but the whole thing is probably going to be worth this over time I just are much of it Before we get to everything else though James let me ask you about tether We had a great cover story on this week's edition of Bloomberg businessweek And what concerns me is without Without enough of an idea of what's backing each tethered coin you know it's supposed to be $1 We thought it was cash then we heard it was cash equivalent Now we could also be loans to companies related to tether And I have to wonder if it's also commercial paper in Chinese developers Like that seems to be the possibility that seems to have the makings of the House of Cards doesn't it It is a house of course It doesn't have your story was brilliant And I think some are courageous because these Bitcoin grows with lasers coming either I added the rice like that Dead walkers out of Game of Thrones You know really don't like facts And it's all like facts that contradict their enthusiasm But I understand the idea of wanting to get rich quick and not doing a whole lot of work and on top of it feeling like you're fighting a movement Whatever that means You know But I think that the BS has to stop and where it stops and how I don't know And to be candid it's not going to be terribly interesting because I've seen this before Just the arrogance associated with these cryptos I haven't really felt before Tether was supposed to have $1 of currency for every tether issue That was the premise And by the way it was invented because you could not as an American come in by Bitcoin you know directly you have to buy something else because of the because of security concerns And because of money laundering concerns around BigQuery so tether was invented with that very specific dysfunction and statement $1 for everyone tether And then lo and behold the number of years later there is not a dollar per every tether There could be a lot less And by the way it's not a dollar occurrence It could be as you say in launch to Chinese Bitcoin farms It could be in Chinese education companies listed on NASDAQ You have no idea And the fact that You know who knows there's probably worse But what it means is how far the authorities has allowed all of this your nonsense to go You know And how little oversight they've exerted so far I just I'm very concerned that globally speaking for securities we're entering a period where the rule of law is not making itself felt And people are feeling emboldened to carry out things that would not have been allowed even ten years ago All right James let's move from crypto to crude oil WTI crude oil north of $81 a barrel What's your call on what's happening here with crude Well look I mean I think that there is a lot of different forces at play and in any major market they're always will be but I do think that we basically have gone through a pretty important period of under investment And I think that this past year exacerbated that period and I think that now that we have increasing demand for oil coinciding with under investment coinciding with shortage in shipping containers which I think does add to all of it because if things get stuck you still burn energy to maintain these ships but you use a lot more It becomes a more energy intensive business that be short to medium term And so I just think that we had a period a year and a half ago as you might have to go all the way you know you know a barrel of oil had important negative valuation on some markets We might have squeezed up that would be frightening you know and it's very it's not the sensible market in the short term medium term Longer term we have more than enough supply around the world to be dark and certainly.

"IRA Jersey. We had some better than expected inflation data coming a little bit lower than expected. What does this mean for the Federal Reserve? I Rose will certainly has been formed thoughts there. Plus Jason Pride. He's a C I o of private wealth at Glenmede. Talk to him about his thoughts on these markets. Are we at peak growth, But first, it's good to Gregg Jarrett. Bloomberg News for a Bloomberg business flash great after opening higher stocks are now moving into the red after the Labor Department reported consumer prices rose 5.3% in August from a year earlier, in line with economists expectations. The rising prices from July to August of 3 10 7% was slower than forecast and could ease pressure on the Fed weighing the risks from elevated inflation. Christian Mueller Goldman Goldman Christian Mueller, Goldman Sachs tells Bloomberg There is reason for equity optimism offshore. The U. S equity market has also performed since the second quarter exactly because of the quality secular growth leadership so we would expect into the fourth quarter. And we do agree, of course, with this idea that there could be a bit more reflation optimism into the fourth quarter. In that type of setup, you would expect year old Japan. Maybe even emerging markets do much better than these down a quarter of a percent. Now downtown. The Dow's down 3/10 of a percent down 110 and the NASDAQ is down 1/10 of a percent down 15. "Gregg Jarrett, How you doing? Hey, Mark. Great to be with you. I'm fine tax. I always start every interview with you. We've done this for years with the same question. If Rip Van Winkle went to sleep and woke up in 50 years would then be able to see the Durham report. Uh, no. He'd still be waiting for it. Apparently, you know, Durham works on Durham Time, which is unique, apparently. Uh, you know, I used to be optimistic that he would reach a conclusion in a timely fashion and that the people I think violated the law identifying my book, Witch hunt. Would be, you know, brought to account, but it hasn't happened yet. And the longer it goes, the less optimistic I am. Well, this new attorney General Merrick Garland, looks like kind of like General Milley like quite the swamp snake, Quite the political guy. And do you think he's told him Hold on to the report? We don't need it now. You don't know I'd love to be in the room when they have engaged in conversations. Um, you know, but Durham is historically the kind of guy You know who bristles at the notion of somebody else telling him what to do. He's fairly independent, so we'll wait and see. Well, hey, check out the Gregg jarrett dot com. Great website. You always have the You know, Here's a big story that obviously is being buried by the media. Kamala Harris, her campaign contributing to that bail fund and one of the people they bailed out has killed somebody. Uh, why? Why does that I mean, it's an obvious question, But why does that get no attention? Well, because you know the media. The mainstream media is in the bag for Democrats continues to protect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Uh, you know, that case is so horrific, but for Camilla Harris Luis Ortiz would be alive today. I mean, she championed the fund that's set free. The man who pulled the trigger and killed according to police movies, Ortiz, I'd love to hear what she has to say. Now to Ortiz is grief stricken, heartbroken family. You know, but this is the vice president president's idea of being look. Let's help accused criminals this victimize innocent people and and keep in mind this accused murderer. His name is George Howard was originally behind bars. On charges of severe domestic abuse. "Of listeners and viewers It's the Peter principle. You know you you rise the highest level of your own in confidence. And and that's you know, Anthony Fauci and the media plays a role in this. I mean, you get a Fauci when you when the meeting puts blind face and then UN elected celebrity scientist That the media elevates toe reverential status. On. You know, you get out you the fraud as I call him, Um you know, other people seem to hang on his every word. Well, that's a difficult hang Because he keeps changing his words and his standards and his recommendation. I mean, you get whiplash trying to keep track of where he is on any given day, and you know, it's bud, too. A lot of misunderstanding and confusion and frustration on the part of the American people. And this is a guy I you know, I wouldn't trust recommend anything in a dime store, much less How the nation should behave in a pandemic. So there was I've used this quote frequently on my show, Greg, There was ah, political scientist, philosopher and hungry you after the fall of the Berlin Wall, who, when he saw none of the criminals of the past regime being punished, he said, Have we become the land of no consequences? Given what you focused on in your books, Given what you've just said about Fauci. Is America becoming a land of no consequences? Yeah, I think it is true. You know, far too many people have lied to Congress. James Clapper, most notably. On DSA. Many others who appear before Congress and you know and get away with deceptions and misstatements and misleading statements. False statements, all of which are Quite often intentional. Um, and you know it's up to the Department of Justice to pursue these things. But there's no will there. I mean, the only time in recent history they've actually gone after somebody. When they get a false in this leading statement before Congress is Michael Collins, and that was only because he was connected to Donald Trump. But you look at the long list of great many other people who have no qualms about misleading Congress in their testimony, and you know the Department of Justice is to blame for that. "Glad you're with us. Our to Sean Hannity show. All right. Democrats resumed they can't fill 16 hours, which is just like all over the place today, and it's his dull and boring and monotonous as it ever could. Whatever they had they used yesterday. What? They're going to use a ball all their time and just take. I don't think in the end, it helps anybody who helps them for sure. Um And and now they using Mitch McConnell's comments Torto to convict Trump. Anyway, Our legal team is with us. We have Gregg Jarrett back podcast. The brief to number one best sellers. The Russia hoax and Witch Hunt. Don Brown, former U. S. Navy JAG officer, author of Travesty of Justice. Thank you both for being with us. You know, you wrote something in a column, Greg that I you know about Jamie Raskin. And if you don't have facts on your side, you get emotional, which was part of his appeal yesterday. And I'm watching all of this today. It's like, you know, scattershot here there and everywhere and they don't have 16 hours of material to fill. They barely have three hours to fill. You know what was so remarkable yesterday and today is the Democrat House managers are spewing inflammatory rhetoric to make their case for incitement. In other words, they're trying to incite emotion. To make a case for incitement of violence against President Trump. And really, the irony should be lost on no one. What I Objects so much, too, is that they keep playing over and over again, and they did this today clips of of Donald Trump. Um, talking to the crowd, and, you know, 10 times already. They've played the clip fight like hell. The use of the term is common political rhetoric. It doesn't mean literally fighting or, you know, taking up arms, So you know, it's an allegory. It's a metaphor. And it's commonly used by politicians as I pointed out to you yesterday, even by lawmakers on the floor of Congress all the time. And they left out and deliberately deleted the most important clip of all, and that's Donald Trump when he encouraged the crowd. To conduct themselves peacefully and patriotic Lee. He didn't encourage people to breach security, launch an attack on the Capitol, attack police and engage in acts of violence. And think about this. If it were other, wrong wise. Trump would have been criminally charged because he's a private citizen. His words don't come close to incitement. They cannot make a case of incitement. If this were a real court of law, the case would be over already. Well, you know, it was a real court of law. You would actually have a real judge in this particular case that would have been the chief justice of the Supreme Court. But no, we have the honorable Patrick Leahy presiding. The guy that before the trial ever began, had already declared Trump's guilt in all of this. That's not a trial by any definition, no fairness, no due process, Just like the house snap impeachment. Um and what are we learning? We're learning that a lot of plotting and planning and scheming and organizing Went went into all of what happened on the six, which renders the entire incitement to insurrection charge. Don brown completely. Nolan void. It's just it's not even relevant anymore. We have a kangaroo court Shawn the skies as an impeachment proceeding by the Senate, Uh, the president of United States eyes not being tried the former president's being tried an Article two. Section four does not give the Senate jurisdiction do that. I don't care how many times they voted to hear the case. Just because they vote to hear the case doesn't mean it's constitutional and fall upon what Greg said. A moment ago, I went back and looked at the president's speech on the sixth, and he only mentioned the phrase capital. Three times in the speech, and here's the crucial language. I'm reading from it. Here's what President Trump said. I know that everyone here will be marching over to the Capitol building to get this. Peacefully and patriotic Lee make your voices heard again. The president's words to peacefully and patriotic Lee make your voices heard. And they're trying to spend that into some sort of high crime or misdemeanor. He's calling for peaceful protest, by the way, which the First Amendment guarantees the right of the people to peaceably assemble and the right of the petition the government for a redress of grievances. Greg is right. They're going a field here. I mean, I was watching Mr Castro earlier today, playing clips of President Trump back in September and in August properly warning about Democrats using the virus as a zey cover for election party ever right to do that? Well, they're charging him for statements, ma'am, the sixth of January. Now they're going back and playing statement from the from August and September without one shred of evidence that one thug who broke the windows of the capital ever heard any of those speeches. Those emotionalism is trite is hyperbole and it is an embarrassment to the United States is this is happening. So we have 44 senators on two occasions 45 the first time 44 yesterday that say this is unconstitutional and shouldn't even proceed. Why are Republicans offering any any validity or legitimacy? To the horrific process in the house that didn't they offered no due process. They offered no defense. They brought it. No witnesses, and now the evidence suggests that their entire impeachment article is no and void. Based on the recent discoveries and developing story that in fact, it was all planned. Gregg Jarrett Yes, all 50 Republican senators should have voted for the motion to dismiss it. Zanon constitutional on dure right about due process. You know, there was never a single hearing. I mean, if Nancy Pelosi it actually taking the time to conduct an investigation to examine the true facts instead of making a hasty decision to impeach Without holding a hearing. Do any literally days after January. 6 then She would have realized. I think what we now know. Documents presented in federal court show the Attackers planned a result, days and weeks in advance. It's impossible for a person. To incite a pre planned event. But none of that mattered to Nancy Pelosi. She wanted to rush to impeach Donald Trump yet again, so she Cooked up a case without waiting to scrutinize the facts, and all of it is such a charade because we know the outcome. There's no way the Democrats convene, reach the threshold, 67 required votes to convict. So you know, we have to go through this fatuous exercise. It's an extravagant waste of time. Will there be witnesses? No, no, there.

"Were a lot of conversation last week, Senator Kane and others seeing the writing on the ward the votes that maybe if he's not convicted, do a center for the president. Are you open to that? There's no hurry. He's not. I think the president should be tried. I hope he will vote to be convicted. Anything past That is something we could discuss, but he deserves conviction. As far as the impeachment trial is concerned, a senator Graham said that if the Democrats call Any witness that they'll be prepared. The Republicans will be prepared to call in the FBI and quote tell us about people who prevented with security footprint at the Capitol. What's yours remember threatened Safety of other members will be the first ones to take them off of the committee. That's it. Thank you. I can't answer that question whatsoever because I have no idea what the right answer is anyone here to weigh in on the legal aspect of this we had Gregg Jarrett. He's the host of his new podcast. The brief to New York Times number one best sellers. The Russia hopes to the and witch hunt. Don brown, former U. S. Navy JAG officer and author of the book. Travesty of Justice. A bestseller in its own, right. Thank you both for being with us, Greg. I know you've been followed. Doing this? It seems, you know, Once you determine its unconstitutional it's over has to be over in the eyes of 45 Republican senators, correct Oh, you're absolutely right. And you were correction to point out that the outcome off the Senate trial was ordained the moment 45 Republicans last week voted to dismiss the case against Trump because you can impeach under the Constitution. President is no longer president. Um, so, but what I find so contemptible about Nancy Pelosi and our fellow Democrats in voting to impeach without holding a singer single hearing is that they knew That if they held a hearing, it would be destructive to them. They didn't want to present evidence because they have no credible and incriminating evidence. So they rushed through the impeachment. And now Pelosi demanding Oh, the Senate should do what I didn't do and call witnesses. Fine. I say. Let's call Alexandria Cassio Cortez, who revealed on Tuesday of this week that she was warned of the violence a week in advance of the riots. And how did she tell Yeah. I mean, how is it possible for Trump to have incited violence as his claimed in the article of impeachment? Peach Mint if that violence was actually planned before he delivered his speech, and so you know, they're just underscores. That this is all about vilifying and destroying Donald Trump. It's an abuse of power by Pelosi and Schumer and your take, don, bro. Well, I agree with Greg. They don't want to touch the evidence with a 10 FT Pole, not only because you're going to expose what Democrats knew. Such as What is the new and not only that, but you know Doug Jones lots more than glory than I am. But if I'm defending the case, I probably play a montage of all those incendiary comments that Maxine Waters and And Kamila Harris and took humor have made of the years about getting their faces go out in the street. I play that and say, What does it mean to incite because whatever the president said when he said to go peacefully falls far beyond that standard, But this is the second time in 13 months they've taken base of the U. S Senate. The Democrats have Internet in sort of a Barnum and Bailey's clown show by ignoring the Constitution. Gregg Jerry had a great outfit. I'm gonna plug a little bit yesterday on Fox, in which he calls the Democrats new patron saint of lost causes. But if you've got an article two section for that lays it out as to who can be impeached the president, the vice president and all civil officers of the United States, not the former president, the former vice president. The president and vice president and Ausubel officers. If the founders wanted to open up the Constitution for a Senate impeachment of private individuals they could have done so. But the Democrats are throwing the Constitution the trash can they give lip service to the Constitution? With the end of the day? It is their restraint device against excessive government power. It gets in their way. They're the ones that ought to be a peach for making a mockery of the constitutional process If you ask me I think there are three arguments that are going to be made here. Now from once you win the constitutional argument, you really could just pack up and leave. But I think both of you touched on the two other arguments that I think are pertinent to the case. Considering I've read the You know the entire case that the Democrats of putting forward and they're gonna try and make it is in Cindy areas possible, No, probably slice and dice and edit their words fighting, the Republicans said Go, Donald Trump said, Go fight like hell. And I put a montage together on TV the other night, Gregg Jarrett, and all it was was Democrats say we've got to fight. This is the fight of our lives. Don't stop fighting, and then the third one is. Well, if we're gonna now define One being an insurrectionist by saying, Go fight. That means all the Democrats could be included in that category. And more importantly, you can ignore as don was putting out. Many of you will now peacefully and patriotic Lee march to the capital so your voices will be heard. Um, when you when you put all of these elements together and now the discovery of the pre planning that went in into all of this and identify groups and court documents and FBI investigations And even liberal media. Now having to report it was preplanned..

We have our weekly conversation with Erik and Erik. We want to ask you about the client exodus from Janice funds today. I mean, obviously the ready trade in a moment, but why is Janice Henderson said? Only losing major clients. Yeah. I mean, it's a big 1 17% of the ownership. Looks like the stock. At least last. I checked with down 6%. Overall, The stock has its okay. It's up 20% over the past five years. Although that is under performing its benchmark of mid caps, But you've got worse. You know Franklin Templeton or Ben Franklin Bennett's Checker is down 22% that time period. But black rocks up 96%, which speaks to the big theme here, which is If you are selling sort of high cost active mutual funds, and that's your main, you know, source of revenue. Your organic growth outlook is horrible Flows air coming out of there. Janet seen up close. All told, Activate your funds have seen about over $500 billion in our clothes last year that said the assets are at all time highs because the market continues to give good asset growth and it's enough to offset the afloat. So I just look Janice assets are 400 billion. That is a record for them. So the problem is, it's not organic. It's you know, Maraj dish if you will, and that's probably what this is quite the writing's on the wall, and I think that's probably what The owner, the person the company selling is looking at and thinking well, it's fine now, but I want to look elsewhere for the future. Eric When I was on the sell side, you know, two of the biggest smartest accounts that you had to have a good relationship with on the buy side, where Janice Funds out of Denver some of the smartest growth investors March cap growth investors. And then the Henderson funds in in London, one of the leading accounts in London. These two get together yet they still can't stem the tide is just this just because all a lot of assets are going into your world the world of ET efs. It's that it's really the vanguard effect, you know, in 2008 in particular, I think a lot of people were dismayed that they're active mutual fund didn't do any better than the market. The pain he sees. Then you have report after report from S and P versus index for sacked of this show Active cannot perform, And then the Internet really hit and you do charge the Internet growth with the rise of passive It's almost perfectly correlated so that information got out. Logs are posted, and people were like, you know what? This isn't really working for me. So they started going to cheat passes. And so you've seen trillions flow over there and trillions come out of active. It's really a game changer. The everything we are saying No, is Janice, as you said, was a big deal. In fact, in the nineties, they were taking in, like 70% of all the clothes. They were kind of the vanguard of their day. As you pointed out. But now what you have is Ark is sort of doing that. That's a fun company that's active, high active here, so it's not over for active. It's just new ones are being born. And I think the Corp I used the word bar Bell. Most of the money is going to cheat beta or shiny objects. And a lot of what Janice has is sort of in the middle. That's kind of high cost, but not too different in the benchmark that's the No man's land right now. And of course, we should mention you know Nelson Peltz's involvement in all of this as well. There was an active shareholder in try and fund management with 9.9% stake and Janice Henderson so he would have had something to do with this, too. Absolutely. Yes. Absolutely. I think You know, Dan, this is one of those companies that they have tried to come out to meet. EF actually acquired a velocity shares, which was the maker of tea vics. That was a weird acquisition. But they do have some talented people over there. They have a couple of tests they're doing, okay, but it's going to be rough. I think in the next 10 years What they need to really worry about. There was a bear market. As long as the market keeps giving. All of this can just kick the can down the road. The organic problem. We'll just get put off and put off. In a bear market. It could get ugly in March alone. That's one month we had a little sample of this active mutual fund saw 350 billion and our clothes in a month. You can imagine if you if you got a year of that it could get really bad. So we tell active and those kind of managers that they should fear a bear market. Almost worse than the vanguard effect. Although the vanguard effect is somewhat like termites, eating away inside of their growth, and when the bear market comes, the house will fall down. I think pretty easily Oh, that, Zack Little later. What age That is Time to go by sight these days? Yeah, Yeah, yeah, It is just a tough time for this business. But again, there are there are forms of active that air rising. Sorry, we wouldn't We look to those Eric. Thanks so much for joining us. He always help us put it into perspective. We're pleased to welcome NatWest Markets. Chief U. S economist Kevin comments Kevin It's great to speak with you. Of course, we're all hoping for much better returns in 2021 as the pandemic we're all hoping will be in our rear view mirror eventually. What do your projections based right now on how the vaccine rollout is going and how the disease is spreading? Yes. Well, thank you for having me. Yeah, I'm pretty optimistic the years a hole for 2000 and 21. We do expect activity as you mentioned with the vaccine, um, being spread wider throughout the population throughout this year. Things should bounce back and we're feeling a bit more confident as we started the year. Um it seems that you know activity has certainly slowed relative to the initial rebound, which I think for all intensive purposes was much stronger than people expected, including ourselves. But I do think in the near term things are probably going to get worse before they get better. Yeah, I mean, I think a lot of people's attention was really taken by the December jobs report the first drop in payrolls in eight months. Are you thinking that that could be a sign of things getting worse before they get better? Is there a possibility that that could be just a one off? It's certainly a possibility. I mean, one of the things we did expect an outright decline in nonfarm payrolls is there were some other forecasters as well. And I point out there was A couple of particular sectors that we saw weakness on guy think it's directly related to Cho of it. The hospitality and leisure sector. Shed 498,000 jobs in December, Uhm so obviously as restrictions ramped up in the wake of the latest spike and covert cases. Um, restaurants and bars and another hotels. And that sort of thing did lay off workers that there was a big contraction there. Um, and assuming that we get the vaccine, toe lead, Tonto Ah, better result, probably around midyear, and people feel more confident and re engage. I think that weakness that we're experiencing now, particularly in that particular sector begins to fade. We should start to see a rebound, not just in that sector, but the broader economy. Yeah, there's been so much talk, particularly among Federal Reserve policymakers about How the recovery has really led to this by for cation between the haves and have nots in this economy when you when you talk about restaurant workers as well, I wonder if a lot of that conversation is going to play out in the policy meeting that's coming up the first policy meeting of 2021 at the end of this month. You know as far as expectations heading into that meeting Um in December, And as you know, at the end of every quarter, we have kind of ah, broader set of information from the Fed. A T end of January. We're only going to get a statement along with the press conference from the chair, Um, on the latest views now, in December, you know, they said not only Provided a statement. But it also updated its forecast into the future, which wasn't dramatically different. But I do think it was a little bit more positive with respect to, you know, just the passage of time, and now that they were here in the vaccines are starting to be disseminated amongst the population. I think the confidence level has gone up and some of the some various Fed officials have pointed this out for recently. Um I don't necessarily think that in January we're going to get much of a new message from the Fed. I think the Fed right now is well aware of the fact that Payrolls are now as you mentioned. Declining. Um, consumption has certainly lost a lot of moment. Um, as we went through the fourth quarter. In the third quarter. You averaged over 1% real consumer spending growth per month. It slowed to this 10.3 in October that we saw an outright contraction in November and this retail sales for December. Um, are expected to show weakness. They're a swell, so I think As the labor market is, you know, uh, showing renewed signs of weakening here, and jobless claims have shown a net increase in the last few weeks. Um, I do think that we're going to get some negative. Ah, negative print for first quarter GDP, which will get at the end of April. Um so I think the Fed right now is kind of in a A wait and see mode until they get a better handle on the rollout of the vaccinations because you know, as chairman Powell has emphasized, you know the economy is going to respond to, however, the vaccine response and the vaccinations ultimately give the people confidence to go out and re engage and enjoy some of the things that they did prior to covet. No, we all are waiting and seeing as the Fed prepares for that first policy meeting of 2021, Kevin Commons chief U S economist in that West markets.
